Reviews of VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital
Wilson Fujinaga
We’ve come here for the past 4 months and they have treated both my babies Kingston Alexander Honeysuckle-rose and Olivia Snowbelle-haven with the upmost care and attention. Given that since COVID many pet owners have experienced a surge of attention needed for their fur babies, I’m glad to see that VCA has also come through as well. Our vets Dr. Terrio, Dr. Suarez, and Dr. Baxter and all the supporting staff from front desk to vet attendees, have all been compassionate and understanding and informative every time we visit. Happy to have our pups taken care of by kind and attentive people.

Got our appointment for Ridley’s yearly exam! Service is always great, ladies at the reception area are helpful and nice! Techs are very sweet and gentle with Ridley. Our vet is amazing answered my questions and explained stuff very well!

I cannot say enough great things about the team at VCA Alexandria. You can trust your pet in their care.
They have helped my wife and I care for our 4 pets, even when faced with horrible medical realities.
Dr. Terrio and Dr. Torrence have been great helps for us, and been providing fantastic care for our dogs and cats. Whether it’s regular care, specialized long-term care, or emergency care - they have been top notch for our animals.
My dog was diagnosed with an aggressive form of blood cancer and passed away at a different VCA specialty hospital. That didn’t stop the vets at VCA Alexandria from reaching out with a very nice and thoughtful note to express their sympathy. They had done all they could to make sure my beloved boy got the best care he could get.
Thank you to the whole team for providing great service to our pets and for being even better people.

We have had four dogs and now a fifth. We always used VCA. Not all vets are the same personality but you can change. I love Dr's. Terri and Suarez. There were one or two I didn't care for over the years. But overall we get great care. All vets are pricey. Its 2022. Dr. Suarez's tech is awesome as is Dr. Suarez.

I’ve been bringing my pets to VCA on Duke for nearly 20 years. They are kind, compassionate and professional. Every single employee and doctor has been wonderful. I especially love, and try to make appointments with Dr. Terrio and Dr Farrell. Yesterday they were so amazing that I had to write. My neighbors cat, whose owner was out of town, was in distress and needed immediate help. We raced him to vca and two nurses came right out to the car to grab him and get him inside. The staff who helped us knew we weren’t his owners but saw we were panicked. They cared for him so well, updating us every few minutes and spoke to the owner over the phone explaining the situation. Never were we asked for payment, for a credit card, for anything. They made his final moments very calm and as stress-free as possible. I’ve always trusted them but their compassion yesterday was above and beyond.

All of The staff here is excellent. My dog was treated here several months ago by Dr Natalia sardanovski who was amazing!!!!! She was excellent, thorough and gentle with my chihuahua Lola who can really be difficult at times. She was having severe diarrhea and they took my dog right in for an emergency examination. dr. Natalia did a thorough examination and treated her and she had a speedy recovery. Overall, we have had a great experience every time that we come and I still travel from Maryland to Alexandria because of how good the experience is.

I have nothing but fantastic things to say about VCA. My dog Reign, had an emergency and we ended up at VCA. From the person answering phones, to the vet techs, and Dr. Galvan, every staff member I spoke to were the nicest, most compassionate, and professional people. They treated my pup with the best care and found the issue fairly quickly after a thorough examination without charging me an arm and a leg for unnecessary tests.
Thank you all again so much!
I would definitely recommend VCA with all your pets needs.

One of the most expensive vets in the DMV for average care. A standard wellness exam with blood work and meds can be upwards of $400-500. They even charge extra for trimming cat nails ($25!) Try Mcclean Animal Hospital if you’re looking for better care with better prices.

EDIT: One year later, we're healthier and happier than ever – and still happy patients of VCA.

I adopted my cat, Vision, three weeks ago. He has had a host of health issues that the shelter did not detect or alert me to, so we've been running from vet to vet trying to get his various ailments attended to.
I came in with a laundry list of issues today and Dr. Chiang and her technicians handled all of them with courtesy, kindness and genuine care for my little guy. I was particularly impressed with Dr. Chiang's bedside manner – she asked follow-up questions, showed care and concern for Vis, and patiently walked me through options without rushing.
The price point is fair considering the level of care and professionalism we received. Vis and I will be back for future appointments!
Photo of a happy, soon-to-be healthy little patient. :)
EDIT: Also shout out to Tim for checking us in with such a positive energy, and to the whole team for how you are handling the COVID-19 protocol. We waited for 5 minutes before we were seen, and were out within an hour.

We’ve been living in the area for a little over a year and wish we would have found this place sooner! We showed up a few minutes before closing time when our dog unexpectedly hurt her foot on our evening walk, and the reception team graciously accepted us for a walk-in visit. The team was so kind to us and our dog, and our vet was very thorough. We will definitely be back!

My family has been going here for decades and have had nothing but wonderful encounters here. I think it is not just luck, but such great attentiveness from AAH that our dogs tend to live really long lives too. My current dog sees Dr. Krochak (as did my previous dogs) and she is awesome. She is very western science based but also is always learning about holistic complementary medical methods. I cannot say enough good things about all of the staff here from the front desk folks to the techs to all of the vets. I have also seen Dr. Baxter, Dr. Terrio, etc. All top notch!
I have also used the Emergency Services and totally trust them.
Michael Yancey
My dog is generally a very nervous, anxious beast. VCA is the only vet to have actually help her calm down. A+++
Linda Wilkoff
We have gone here for medical emergencies and puppy updates.
Every experience has been positive.
Very sad situation that was bearable because of their professional, dedicated, and loving staff.
Thank you. 🐾❤️ …

Incredible staff who care so much about you and your pet. Will continue to give them our business. Than you so much!!

Albert was so helpful and squeezed my fur baby in for an urgent appt. Dr Ferrari was awesome and thorough with his treatment plan. Ms Sybeel was so gentle and loving. The entire staff was so sweet and down to earth! Couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Teri Lewis
We have been coming to Alex Animal Hospital for approximately 35 years now. They have always taken loving care of each of our fur babies over the years. Dr. Cohen is our current vet. He is kind and gentle and we trust him without question. Thanks! The Lewis' and Annie

Have taken Fizzy here three times since I adopted her. Always able to get her in for an appointment quickly, always taken back in a timely manner, and the staff are always very good with her.

The doctors at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital are the only vets we trust to care for our dogs. They have helped us provide preventative, acute, and emergency care for many years. Everyone is friendly and the physicians are all experts..
Emily Larson
I have only been here with my dog and we love it. She is high energy and hard to handle but they always help me contain her excitement and take her in a timely manner. All of the assistants are so friendly and helpful. My dog went through a few months where we had to go in every 2 weeks to get her foot looked at and every single time they were so helpful, respectful, understanding, and took the time to explain everything. I have also called just to ask questions to get some advice without going in and they happily answer. Highly recommend!

Waited for 2 hours to be seen. No diagnosis given for what I thought was an urgent problem. Staff failed to call in the prescription correctly which means I didn't get meds for two more days (VCA is closed Sunday). TIP: this isn't a hospital. If you need urgent care don't go there. This isn't meant to be a negative review as the staff were friendly and the vet was good when I finally got to see him. I just hope to set folks' expectations about urgent care. I was in a panic with a pet I thought was dying, and waited for hours for attention.

Friday night 10/29/21 started looking for pet emergency vets. My search brought up VCA Alexandria on Duke Street. Called them and as fate would have it, they just had a cancellation for a 6:30 appointment.
Whoever answered the phone was very kind and inviting. She was wonderful helping make the appointment. Great customer service starts at the front desk. Dr. Torrance was the vet we saw. This was our first time here. He and his assistant were very good. He listened to my concerns regarding a UTI with my new rescue. I had explained I just lost my two dogs in September two weeks apart from each other. One had CKD and the other diabetes but she passed due to internal bleeding, her diabetes was controlled.
Dr. Torrance understood my financial concerns from September's two day emergency visit, two euthanasia's and cremations. It was a pretty bad month.
He prescribed meds for the UTI but gave me a plan forward if they don't work. Dottie had just come off meds Oct 20th and judging by her actions it didn't completely take care of it. Having had a diabetic dog, I know the signs.
He waived the first time visit charge and gave Dottie a free dose of flea and tick meds.
Dr. Torrance has a great personality and his assistant was very good with Dottie.
Timothy P. checked us out and was incredibly nice. The wonderful folks in the front gave me a first time visit gift bag with a few goodies, Dottie's meds and information to read. They also sent a text with information about appointments and I think they have a pet portal. Also received an email of everything from the visit. The office is exceptionally clean and they thoroughly explained the directions for the prescription.
The overall experience left me feeling like they genuinely cared.
I have a regular vet I've been seeing for a year however VCA will definitely be my go to vet if I cannot reach my primary.
Overall really impressed with the level of customer service and care. Definitely a top shelf animal hospital ❤️🐕 Thank you again. - Daleena and Dottie

Over the years, and more than one pet, the people at VCA have always been so kind and considerate. Two years ago my beloved Errol was ill while I was across the country checking up on my 92 year old father. They called me and did their very best to try to save my boy: they sent me photos of Errol; gave him a transfusion, and finally released him from his suffering. Incredibly VCA did not charge me for his care. I will always use them after this great kindness.

April 21 2017 a day i will never forget. I had to put my dog of 15 years to rest. I was crying when I called them, crying when I walked through the door, and crying when they explained the procedure, but when they did the procedure it was actually very comforting. Kobe didn't suffer at all. They gently sedated him then the other meds followed. They gave me a quiet room for privacy n allowed me time with him before and after. They sent me a card a week later and a mold of my dogs paw which made me so happy. If the time ever comes that
Im ready for another pet i will definitely choose VCA alexandria again.

This is our go-to place for our cat's health needs and we've had great appointments so far with great doctors. Last week, our cat had a 3-year rabies shot with some adverse after effects from the high dosage and when we called VCA to let them know, they offered for us to bring her back for an urgent care appointment to check her free of charge (we'd have to pay for treatment still). Thankfully our cat felt better soon and we didn't need to bring her in. I'm a fan of this place and would recommend for others to bring their pets in.
Lily Barnett
The staff was exceptional in every way. Brenda at the front desk was pleasant and had a wonderful attitude. I truly appreciate her genuine concern for my sick puppy. Another plus was that I didn’t have to wait long; which was amazing due to the fact that it was an emergency and I didn’t have an appointment. If you love your animal(s) and want a positive vet experience, VCA Old Town is the best option. My puppy is doing amazing and on a speedy road to recovery all thanks to an amazing Veterinary team!
robert Fleming
Dr Baxter is excellent with Felix and the staff are friendly and helpful. It may cost a little than other vets but it's worth it.
Pamela Swieczkowski
VCA is always great! Dr. Galvan specifically has been a godsend for our animals. Compassionate, kind and honest about what is best for our pets. The staff has worked tirelessly for our animals in their time of need and we will forever be grateful for everyone there. Pet expenses are never cheap, but we feel the level of care VCA offers and the peace of mind we feel with our pets under their care is always worth it. They are always upfront and detailed about what services and expenses could be expected.

We've adopted two dogs within the past year who both had to make emergency trips to the vet. Every time we've needed to, the VCA team has gone above and beyond to provide care, including taking time over the phone to help us out with issues without having to go in. The staff is kind, knowledgeable, and their quarantine practices are very safe. Would definitely recommend!

The facility is clean and staff are friendly. Dr. Chiang is excellent! She explained what is needed why and when, answered all my questions, my puppy didn't feel pain from his shot, received lots of attention and treats, and was very comfortable being there.

The staff was friendly, well informative, and accommodated our dog who isn’t well with other dogs but loves people! I love using VCA as I have used Herndon location, and Centreville due to relocating but I never had a bad experience. VCA Is always such a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them!!!

We have been extremely grateful for finding VCA to be our doggie doctors for 3+ years. All of the staff, from the vets to the front desk personnel, have always been very thorough, friendly, and reliable. Despite their parking lot always being packed, we've never once felt like our pets aren't getting the most complete, detailed, and loving care. It is no exaggeration to say that VCA has saved one of our dogs lives...TWICE (she's accident prone). They've always called to check up on her afterwards, and shown heartfelt concern for her outcome. If you live in the DMV area and have pets, VCA should be your pets' veterinarian! Thank you VCA as a whole, and I'd thank you all individually, but the list is too long for a review :) We appreciate all of you and all you have done for our family

My kitty and I have visited twice in critical situations--a UTI and what we eventually were able to ascertain was his first asthma attack. The staff is great. Before moving to DC, I lost my last cat suddenly and the memories of losing her in the middle of an overnight hospital visit are tough for me; VCA has been so supportive, even if I'm breaking down. I appreciate most that they are conscious of the fact that emergency care isn't cheap and discuss with you what should be done immediately and what could wait for your regular vet to do on a cheaper rate. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Elizabeth Persaud
The staff was super patient + helpful. They did a full check on my pet, even though we were there for a very specific issue and offered various treatment options. They also clearly have a very efficient system set up to accommodate COVID regulations. While they aren't my regular vet clinic, I am more than likely to return!

We’ve been taking our animals (two cats and a dog) to VCA for almost three years. I can’t say enough positive things about VCA. I’m a bit of a helicopter pet mom and the technicians, the front desk staff, and the doctors are always helpful and compassionate. They are always thinking about what is in the best interest of our animals and providing helpful advice and calming us down. I trust them completely with the care of my pet family.

We have taken our pets to VCA Alexandria for 10 years. We now have a new puppy to add to the pack and VCA has been great as always. It is easy to get appointments. We have used emergency 24-hour services twice with one of our older dogs and they took such good care of her. We have had surgery on the same dog and again, the surgery and post-op care were exemplary. We will be loyal clients as long as we have pets! Thank you to everyone from the doctors, to the technicians to the receptionists to the pharmacy and all-you are always caring, empathetic, professional, and more than capable and we appreciate each and every one of you more than you can imagine!

No longer can recommend this place for those who own pitbulls.
Our pup (pitbull mix rescue) has been coming here since we adopted her a 10mos. At first we didn't have any issues and Dr. Drake saw her within 24hrs of her adoption since she was throwing up (turned out it was stress since she was picked up 2 weeks prior, spayed 3 days prior and then in a new environment). Let's just say since then our dog LOVES going to the vet. Like-- she is super excited when we park at the building (she recognizes) and loves saying hi to all the front desk ladies and all animals in the waiting room. She's even used as the 'test case' for new dogs joining her doggy daycare due to her temperament.
Unfortunately the issue started about 2 years ago when either a VCA doctor and/or technician may have given her a bad experience(s). We were assigned other doctors after Dr. Drake left VCA (we searched her on google, and it seems she moved to a practice out in Reston/Chantilly area BTW for those who live out there), and the most recent one for the past 2 annual check ups was with Dr. Suarez when these issues started. She had admitted to my partner during check up that she was nervous around pitbulls and that they are a dangerous breed that shouldn't be around small children unattended. It's really saddening she has that mentality as a vet, and her anxiety against the breed may have also been reflected in the animal's nervousness around her. She even wrote a prescription for our dog to take a tranq pill an 1-2hrs before the visit and recommended she should get her a basket muzzle.
As our annual visit was around the corner, I tried calling VCA for another vet that might be comfortable around large breeds, ie. pits, but they gave the standard answer of "all vets are comfortable working with large dogs!" -- which wasn't reassuring that the front desk could not be a bit more mindful.
We ended up checking out two alternative options with a fear-free mindset. She recently visited Caring Hands Clarendon twice (despite it is much more of a drive for us) for her annual check up and vaccinations (two separate rounds of shots!), and both times the vet and technician said there were no issues and she was an absolute sweetheart. This again, was without any pills or muzzles needed or even discussed. Our pup goes in there excited and returns with a super happy wagging tail, which is a relief.
We also checked Harmony Animal Hospital just to do a drop by visit and get her acquainted with the space, and it was reassuring that the staff said they had pits at home and also our pup had a great visit (unfortunately at this time they were not yet ready to take new patients).
So after experimenting around for a better fit for our dog, we can conclude that indeed it was not our dog but perhaps the VCA/Dr. Suarez and/or the technicians that handled her. Again, it is a shame since VCA does offer a convenience being nearby, but unfortunately we cannot trust them to provide the right doctor for our dog.

We have a dog that we have taken to VCA for the past 4 or 5 years. Every time I call or walk in, the staff is friendly and helpful. We have seen several different vets there and we’ve never had a bad experience with one of them. They’ve done great dental work, and when my dog had to be hospitalized for eating and ibuprofen tablet, they were extremely helpful and supportive. Every time I go there, I leave wishing that my PCP were half as awesome as the vet! We just rescued our second dog, and she will be going to VCA as well. Some of the procedures can be a little bit pricey, but for me, it’s worth it to know I have 24 -7 access to quality veterinary care.
Jacqueline Roeder
This is an incredible institution! I always trust them to take care of everything and to not overcharge. Highly recommend bringing your pet here.
Christina DelloRusso
VCA Alexandria is hands down the best care we have ever received. From nail trims to our dog spending days in the ICU they are amazing. The doctors are professional and give you all of the information and options. Cost information is always reviewed up front so you are aware and informed. Dr. Terrio was incredibly compassionate and responsive to all of our questions while we made very difficult decisions; she saved our dogs life. The front desk staff is professional, helpful, and responsive. Our dogs are our babies and we expect nothing but the best care for them, VCA Alexandria has never let us down, we will go to them every single time.
Fabienne Collson
I have used this animal hospital for 30 years. They have provided superior care for a number of my pets and fosters I’ve had over the years. While the prices can be higher than some veterinarians, having my pet treated at a state-of-the-art facility is worth the cost. Each doctors who treated my pets over the years became like a family member giving my pets highly personal care and not just another animal on her/his table. They have always worked closely with me discussing treatment plans for sick pets and never encouraging unnecessary treatments or surgery. When surgery has been necessary, I have been grateful for the highly qualified veterinarians and high tech surgical rooms at VCA Alexandria.
Lannie Spoor
We have taken all our dogs to Alexandria Animal Hospital since 1976 and have obviously been very happy with them. The staff is consistently excellent, caring and responsive. Having a 24-hour emergency service available only adds to the sense of support. They have often gone out of their way to help us and our dogs, giving much more than expected or required. If we could go to them for our own health needs, we probably would (kidding. We love our physician, but that's how much we think of our veterinary hospital).
Nina Pharis
They are the best pet hospital around. They always treated me and my dogs like family. I’ve been taking my dogs there for years and I’ve never had a bad experience. We recently had to put out 15 year old dog, Maggie to sleep, and they were so patient with my family. They explained everything, made sure my dog was comfortable, made sure my family was comfortable with everything, and gave us as much time as we needed. Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Baxter, and quite a few other vets took amazing care of Maggie over the past 14 years, and I’m blessed to have found such a caring Vet. Thank you, VCA for everything you do.
Elise
The vet techs are truly amazing! I came in as an emergency because my pup ate some feminine products. He's very cautious of vet clinics, but they worked with him and three of us were able to give him a shot. They did not give up and they didn't make me feel bad for him being difficult. This place was truly amazing and their customer service was beyond expectations!!

I was certain that my puppy had swallowed a battery the other morning, and I took him to VCA Alexandria for an emergency visit. When I arrived, I was greeted nicely by a receptionist, and my pup was taken back within a few minutes of arriving. The vet was very nice, as were the techs who handled my dog. Very clean facility. The day after my visit, I received a follow-up from the office. I will not hesitate to take my dog here again.
Frances Bothfeld
Took our dog here at 11pm after she ate our blinds and wouldn’t stop vomiting. Yes it is pricey but they were very straightforward with the cost of treatment, what was necessary and what treatment was just for peace of mind. The vet and vet techs were incredibly nice and took the time to talk with us and answer any questions we had about the treatment plan. We were in an out in a hour it’s all the information we needed. Hopefully we never need to go back, but we would absolutely take our pup here if we needed to.
Bobbie Alexander
I have had all of my pets taken care of by the team at Alexandria Animal Hospital for over 14 years and they are consistently professional, caring, and have tremendously helped my canine and feline family members (and me at times as well). I love Dr. Terrio and Dr. Farrell and the associate and technician staff are super. I have come to trust them tremendously -- they have seen me through simple wellness visits to surgeries and other things related to my family. I refer all of my neighbors and friends here and they all feel the same way. For many reasons, I will always be deeply grateful to them.
Brian Noyes
We've been taking our pets to Alexandria Animal Hospital for over a decade. And all I can say is I wish we could find as outstanding of health care for ourselves as we have for our pets. The range and quality of care they provide is hard to beat at any other veterinarian. The fact that they are an animal hospital and also there for us if needed for emergencies (which luckily we have never had to take advantage of), is a nice additional layer of comfort knowing they always have us covered when it comes to the health and welfare of our furry family members. They also have a wide range of expertise in house, so we never feel like the care is limited to just the experience and knowledge of one or two doctors in smaller clinics. As a former service member who experienced a lot of veterinarians across our various duty stations, I can easily say Alexandria Animal Hospital is the best care we've ever experienced for our pets.
Tracy Gregg
Our various cats have been clients of Alexandria Animal Hospital since 1986. During the many years, we have consistently received outstanding care for our pets. We have also been happy that we have been able to see the same vet for many years (Dr. Suarez) so our cats are cared for by a medical professional who knows them and is fully aware of their medical history.
Over the years we have also had to use the emergency service a few times. We have been entirely satisfied with the loving care our pets have received at the times when they were most ill.
Jenna Meyers
We have been here a few times, only back when they still had the emergency room. They were pretty good then but we hadnt had regular veterinary care with them.
Our dog needed emergency surgery a week ago at the referral center in springfield, but our dog was having some symptoms we were worried about afterwards. We were looking around for vets in our area to serve as his primary care and were on the fence about who to choose. His symptoms got worse this morning and we didnt know where to go. VCA had an appointment available for us and they were very helpful on the phone. We arrived and I expected to be stuck waiting for hours because most vets are taking a lot longer than usual lately. They took him back within 10 minutes of us arriving and examined him right away and continually called us to update us on what was going on inside (with covid, people are not allowed in). The service was spectacular and I have not experienced such good service at a vet before. That is saying a lot because our dogs are not the easiest to handle. I think we found our new primary care doc for our pups!! Thanks VCA!!!!!

Great clinic for your beloved animal. Doctors are very friendly and take the time to make you and your pet feel comfortable. Highly recommended.

Can't say enough good things about VCA Alexandria. We brought our Scottie in last evening after he had been vomiting nonstop for 24 hours. Winston usually freaks out as soon as he gets to the vet, but the atmosphere was so friendly and calm that he was totally at ease. We didn't have an appointment, but he was seen immediately.
Dr. Hilson was friendly, knowledgable, and calm. He took the time to explain our options and hear our concerns. He even gave us his email address so that we could contact him personally with any concerns until his shift ended at 12am!
The entire front desk staff was so friendly with every dog and human that walked in the door. I am so at ease knowing this animal hospital is five minutes away from where we live!
Thank you so much for your outstanding service!
Alex Trujillo
Theyre ok. I’ve use VCA for the last 4 years. It’s helpful that they are able to transfer records from different locations. Took all of my three dogs to this location within the last year, but will look for a better place. 2/3 vets we saw were more attentive than the last one. Customer service at the desk lacks when they are busier as well.
anne kelly
Our dog has been a patient of VCA Alexandria his entire life. We are very confident when we bring him there. The doctors and technicians are very caring and confident. He had one emergency when he got the barb of a fish hook caught on his tongue. He was treated caringly and recuperated from the operation within hours. We wouldn't take our pet anywhere else.

A couple of months ago our wonderful but old dog began having major issues late at night. As one of the only 24hrs vets in the area we rushed her to VCA. Unfortunately by the time we arrived she passed away. VCA staff and vets were amazing during this emotional time. They gave us time to say goodbye, made sure we got a paw print, and handled the cremation details. The vet even sent us a heartfelt condolence card. This was a first-time visit and we were impressed by how helpful they were for clients who were not regulars.

My cats are older and Ron is very "unpredictable". Dr. Suarez is so sweet with him despite his "bad attitude". I just got his teeth cleaned and HUGE SHOUT OUT to Dr. Suarez for so many reasons - (1) I was given an accurate estimate of the cost (and the range it could be due to needed extractions); (2) she provided detailed reports + before and after pictures(!) so I could see where the work was done and how much his dental health improved; (3) she called me with an update after the procedure; and (4) she sent my cat home with some pain killers for the extractions and he is his best self on those. Thank you Dr. Suarez and VCA Alexandria! Really cannot overstate the value of knowing your pet is in good hands.

I like the way they care for my pet, but honestly, they charge way too much. I went in for an emergency exam, which they charge & $140 for (okay, whatever) they wanted to charge me $1,600+ to just do exams. After being told by my aunt about a different facility, I opted to not use their services and they still charged me a total of $306 just to hydrate my pup. It's a little unfair and once I took my pup to Waldorf Emergency Care, I found out the same exams, xrays, and ultrasound cost $400, I can't believe I almost gave VCA more than $1,600+. My pup indeed needed surgery and I used that $1600 to pay for her surgery. Essentially I wasted $300 with VCA and wish I would have known about Waldorf Emergency Care initially. I dont have any complaints on their service, but I don't appreciate feeling scammed by their pricing, especially during an emergency situation. Not having an extra 1k for EXAMS can be the difference between life or death of your pet.

I have always had a great experience at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital. The people at the front desk are always helpful and nice, while the vets are so gentle and nice to my cat. I never feel rushed when talking to the vets and they give great advice and perspective to help keep my cat healthy! I also like the fact it is an emergency location.

I’ve had nothing but great experiences here. My dog recently had a mass removed and Dr. Bidwell was extremely attentive in monitoring his incision as it healed and ultimately managing a cancer diagnosis. Every staff person I’ve spoken to has been compassionate, helpful and professional and I’m so grateful my dog has such great care.

We have 3 dogs that all have gone to see Dr. Farrell. She is terrific with them. Very patient and very understanding. We have had to put two out of the three dogs down (old age) and she was very caring and considerate as we did so. She even followed up with a handwritten sympathy card. I can not say enough good things about our experiences with Dr. Farrell and everyone at the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital. My dog is truly my best friend. I want the very best for him. I can highly recommend Dr. Farrell and the entire staff.

I took my cat to this emergency room recently one night and before we were even checked in, the receptionist called for triage stat and within seconds a tech appeared and was assisting us. So impressed by both employee's fast and empathetic responses. They did triage and within a minute the doctor was out talking to us. Within a few minutes we were in a room and the decision was made to unfortunately put the cat down, because of her state, but we had this schedule for the next morning. She was old and very sick. This night she was having back to back seizures. Before I knew it, my cat was back in my arms and the procedure was done. Although such a traumatic experience for me, every employee we came in contact with just blew me away with their concern and care. They did a free paw print which was mailed within two days and it was even more than I expected. They put her name below the print and added some hearts around it, in a leather booklet with a card that had a poem and their condolences. When we picked up my cat the next morning, I was expecting a trash bag, but instead she was placed in a sturdy white cardboard coffin/box and also then we were treated very kindly and gently. When we took her out for cremation, I was happy to see her positioned by VCA in a very natural and beautiful way. I couldn't have asked for anything more from this facility or its employees and I would recommend others here in a heartbeat.

I have been taking my cats to VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital for at least 10 years. The entire staff--doctors, technicians, veterinary nurses, coordinators--are simply the best. I can never express adequately the gratitude I feel toward them for all that they have done for me and my pets. It is comforting to know that they are always there with just the right treatments and answers. I also like that so many of the doctors have sub-specialties which allow them to identify those times when my cats may need more advanced care or more specialized treatments. It is also a blessing that whenever I have had to say goodbye to one of my fur babies, they have been there to support and comfort me. Thanks, VCA-AAH!

This Animal Hospital is the best! I love the staff and Vets. You can tell they all love animals. The treatment on my two dogs has been great. My one dog has stomach issues but he has been treated well here. I like that it is an emergency vet as well. I have recommended friends to go and they have been very satisfied.
Brett Brumage
We called beforehand to ensure they were open. The staff answered the phone within two rings, very polite and professional. Recommended we bring our dog in because of her behavior and limp. Upon arrival someone came from the back and took our dog back for triage. Front desk and triage staff were superb and reassuring. Our dog was quickly vetted and we were consulted. With the given recommendations like lab work and pain medicine, we we’re professionally educated and respected while doing so. The visit from the time it started until we left was 1.30 hours and the prices were beyond reasonable. I can’t recommend Dr. Sheldon and staff enough for their kind, caring abilities.
Cynthia Evans
I highly recommend VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital. They have taken care of our two pups since we adopted them eight years ago. Regular check-ups, unexpected emergency room visits after run-ins with raccoons two years in a row, and surgery to repair a torn ACL have all been performed in an exemplary manner. From the receptionists to the technicians to the veterinarians, everyone has been kind, caring, and professional. They are expensive, but for the care we receive, we are willing to make that sacrifice. They love our pets and we love them!

What can I say about this animal hospital, Very professional all around, every doctor that has seen my dog has been wonderful as well as all the employees💯🤙🏻 …

Dr. Natasha Sardonowski was AMAZING! Great pet side manner. Absolutely cares deeply about animals. Very thorough, wonderful explanations. Doesn't just test, x-ray, prescribe just to ring up the bill. Fantastic vet who takes time to ensure you and your pet are appropriately taken care of. Loved her!
Vicki Sifrit
My cats have been patients here for many years. The staff is great, caring, sympathetic, and kind. The care they give is 5 star, but the dollar cost is high. As a working senior citizen, it is hard to find the funds to pay for all the care needed. Still, I bring my cats, also seniors, to VCA Alexandria because they deserve the best care and I know they will get that care here.
Trevor Pyle
We went in on a weekend with our sick dog. We definitely did not think it would be the last night we were with our dog. It was obviously an incredibly challenging night, but VCA Alexandria provided the best possible experience given the situation. Our veterinarian, Dr. Dobbin is one of the kindest humans I have ever meet. She completely explained the situation, gave us time and helped us though a very tough time. She even sent us a card a week later. One of the best experiences I have ever had with a place of business. I could not suggest the clinic or Dr. Dobbin highly enough.

My dog had a spot on his eye. I wasn't pleased with a different vet's handling of it (right medicine, bad handling of my dog) so I called VCA Alexandria. They were able to get me in next day. I saw Dr. Suarez and she was amazing. She was gentle (my dog is still feisty at 17) and thorough and made me feel much better. When I needed a refill my original vet didn't return my call (it's been four days and I'm still waiting) so I called VCA. I received my Rx refill the same day. Guess who I'm switching to as soon as my other contract runs out? Dr. Suarez and VCA are worth it.
Victoria Emerson
Another great experience at VCA, brought the cats in for shots and came away armed with new knowledge to keep my mature older kitties happy and healthy. Great staff!

My family & I have only taken our dogs to Alexandria Animal Hospital.
Their support staff & doctors have always been so knowledgeable, caring & helpful to us. Their primary concerns are what's best for our pets, not what makes them most $.
Their staff has always treated my dogs with loving care & dignity all the way thru their last moments. I had to put 2 dogs to sleep in the past 4 years. They helped make the extremely emotional occurrences bearable for me. They even made me paw impression of my dog both times & sent us a condolence card to our family home afterwards. What else can be said about them, we will continue using their services.
It's obvious their staff really love animals, thank you so much for your great staff.

A few days before returning home, from an extended family visit to Alexandria, my 14-year-old papillon began a bout with diarrhea. The day before we were scheduled to start our two-day car trip home he also began vomiting. Knowing there was no way he could make the trip; I called the nearest veterinary clinic. Fortunately, Alexandria Animal Hospital offers Urgent Care and they agreed to see me immediately. Dr. Natalia Sardanovski, after examining Rocky, reviewing his complicated medical history provided by our own veterinarian and talking at length over the phone with me (COVID) she advised her plan of action. He was given an injection to stop the diarrhea. Dr. Sardanovski also provided additional oral medications so Rocky could make the trip home without incident. The tech who brought Rocky out to my car, during a light rain, also spent time discussing what was done and assured me he would be fine during the trip home. The treatments worked! Yes, selecting Urgent Care resulted in a higher ‘office visit’ charge but there was no pressure for additional expensive tests before deciding on how best to help me. The team took into account the entire situation and worked quickly and positively to help. To me, the cost was reasonable considering the alternative of traveling with a very sick dog. Dr. Sardanovski also called me a few days later just to make sure Rocky was safely home and had no more symptoms. I could not have asked for a better experience or outcome.

Went to this vet for a second opinion after my local vet was unable to properly diagnose or devote attention to my suddenly ill cat. VCA was kind, considerate to my financial limitations, and was very patient with explaining every medical treatment option available to me. They also had a flexible schedule that allowed me to work around my hectic work hours. My cat, Meatball, was promptly diagnosed and I was impressed with VCA's dedication to helping my cat in a knowledgeable and efficient manner. Dr. Drake is a fantastic doctor and I feel blessed that I was able to have access to such wonderful medical care. I highly recommend this place!

We've been taking our pets to Alexandria Animal Hospital since 2003. During this time, the staff has seen us through the lives of seven pets and the deaths of three. Whether dealing with regular checkups, illnesses, accidents or euthanizing elderly pets, the staff has been very friendly, compassionate and understanding. Being a 24/7 facility, they've always been available when our pets needed them. About my only complaint would be that you pay a premium for this level of service.
Denise White
I recently returned to VCA after trying a place close to me. I am very happy I did. The level of care cannot be measured. Dr Drake is excellent! She was very gentle and thorough with my two little ones. She also spend time answering all of my questions. She did not make me feel rushed even though I knew they were behind due to an emergency. The support staff were awesome. Each exhibited excellent customer service with smiles and sharing stories. They have a genuine concern and sincerely care for the pets they see. I would highly recommend VCA and Dr. Drake.
Monika Dunbar
I absolutely love this group. I think I've seen every vet there and each one has been fantastic. Unlike my own doctors, they spend time with you talking about issues/concerns or even just general "how are things with your cat?". Whether it's an annual check-up or an emergency visit, I've never felt rushed. I've also used them for boarding and everything has been fine. If you live in the area and have a pet, I highly recommend them.
Emily Reigart
I've taken my cat here since day 2 of adoption. As a rescue with an unknown history, Lucy's medical history was both a mystery, but the docs were patient and persistent in helping getting my girl healthy and happy. Four years later, and I'd recommend VCA to anyone.
Heather Torrance
We had a very positive experience with the clinic. We were moving overseas and they were very familiar with the USDA process and the type of exams, shots, and other requirements we'd need for our two cats. The veterinarians also gave us good advice on feeding the cats appropriately so they'd lose a bit of weight, and how to keep them from scratching up our furniture.
Thomas Dunbar
I have been taking my cats to Alexandria Animal Hospital since I moved to this area almost 10 years ago. They have a state of the art facility and the doctors and staff are very professional. They have provided both normal care for my cats and have dealt with other more advanced health issues, including treating my oldest cat for over 16 months for acute arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. I had to make the agonizing decision to end the suffering of that cat this summer and the doctors and staff could not have been more sympathetic and supportive.
I would not hesitate to recommend Alexandria Animal Hospital to any pet owner.
Amy “Awii”
I have had to bring my puppy their twice. Both times to the emergency room at odd hours of the day.
The staff have been very helpful and nice making sure I felt OK.
They were also very good to my puppy. Making sure he was comfortable and getting what they thought he would need, always asking if it was OK first.
Their price are reasonable for the fact that they are an emergency room and the things that they do for the animals.
Elizabeth Singleton-Realtor
I really like the way the VCA Alexandria Emergency Hospital is run, and this is why:
When I have what I consider to be a pet emergency, I call the VCA Alexandria Emergency Animal Hospital using their number which is saved in my phone and let them know I'm on the way. This gives them a heads up as to what the situation with my pet involves so they can be prepared.
When I get there, someone takes care of me and my pet almost right away. A tech comes out and speaks with me directly and takes my pet to the main treatment room to check on my pet's vital signs and assess the situation. When the situation is not dire, the pet is returned to me so we can wait together until the veterinarian on duty is ready to discuss my pet with me.
The veterinarian meets with me to discuss my pet's medical situation and the best treatment options available. I have never met a judgmental veterinarian there, and so far no one has tried to milk me for extra treatments that may or may not be necessary. I have never experienced a veterinarian who was not willing to take his or her time to fully explain what was going on with my pet and what all the options were for addressing the situation.
The veterinarian on duty is not a resident or intern but an experienced doctor who has chosen to practice emergency medicine with its crazy hours and unpredictable cases. The technicians are certified and knowledgeable.
Most of the time I've had to bring an animal to the emergency part of the animal hospital, I have been in and out within an hour or two. So far there has only been one time that I brought an animal there and had to wait longer due to several emergencies that were determined to be more serious than my situation. However, my pet still was taken back almost immediately upon our arrival to be checked out.
In summary, I feel my pets are getting great medical attention and care from professionals who are experienced, knowledgeable, pleasant, and compassionate. The system under which they operate is organized and seems to be triaged appropriately. I have not experienced any price gouging or unnecessary recommendations. I have recommended both the emergency and regular hospital to friends and family many times and will continue to do so. Thanks to the staff for all they do!
Sara Lewis
We see Dr. Suarez and she is amazing! She always spends a lot of time with us and gives us plenty of opportunities to ask questions. The front desk staff are both helpful and professional. We also had a great experience with the after-hours emergency services when our puppy was sick. Even though we do not live in Alexandria anymore, we continue to make the trek because of the great care she receives.
Trevor Runge
We arrived with our sick guy at 1013 and left after 1700 on 6.8.20 (so about 7 hours). Upon dropping our dog off the vet tech berated us about heatstroke (his final diagnosis is immune-mediated thrombocytopenia). In other words completely unrelated. It also cost us more than $1400. We had no final diagnosis and the recommendation was to take our dog to a 24-hour hospital for additional diagnostics, monitoring, and care. We followed their recommendations and went to VCA SouthPaws where our dog was kept for 24 hours (total price $1900). We were offered a military discount at SouthPaws, VCA Alexandria when contacted refused to honor a discount. If you are military and have a dog that potentially will need overnight care I would not recommend VCA Alexandria. We were severely distressed about our dog and instead of being treated with humility and kindness, we were treated with disrespect and accused of inflicting heat stroke which is completely unrelated to his final diagnosis (given by VCA SouthPaws). My dog will never be back to VCA Alexandria. We advised the director of the facility of our concerns and her answer was simply sorry that shouldn't have happened.
Updated (2 to 4 stars):
Tara, facility manager, did make amends and honored a 10% discount. I do hope that the facility uses this incident as a training opportunity for their vet technicians to improve the care experience. Techs should show compassion, empathy, and not give owners preemptive opinions on a clinical diagnosis.

On Sunday when out for a walk our puppy found a dead rat - although we got the rat out of her mouth before she ate it - we were concerned about any adverse impact on her. Our regular vet is closed on the weekend, so we called VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital. I spoke with Amy who was amazingly helpful, professional, knowledgeable and reassuring. We are so appreciative. Thank you for being there.

I have a Chinese Shar Pei who gets pretty grouchy at the vet. I was beyond impressed with not only the level of care the staff gave her especially given how difficult she can be. We love Dr. Bidwell but unfortunately Maddie was in the ICU for over 24hrs and I think it's important to mention that the level of care didn't change and each doctor was well informed during the change overs. All veterinarians AND support staff gave her excellent care and I really trust this place to take care of my dog.
Sheryll Evangelista
I brought my miniature schnauzer in for an infection and he had to stay there for 3 days. The medical team was awesome and took great care of him. They allowed me to visit him anytime and gave me as much time as I needed to stay with him. I was getting continuous updates from the doctors and they were so patient with me as I was asking so many questions. Thank you for your service in taking care of our furbabies and ensuring they get the best care!
Kendra Frassetto
When I had to make the final call on euthanizing my beloved cat, Baby, the office staff was exceptionally accommodating and compassionate. For the last month of his life he received the best care possible. We were at that time new to the Alexandria area and really didn't know other veterinary options. They were great.

I’m snuggling with my pup right now knowing he probably wouldn’t be alive if I hadn’t gotten him to VCA Alexandria when he needed it. He’d had some fun in my purse, and I feared he might have swallowed some spilled ibuprofen - little did I know he’d chowed down on probably 15-20 tablets and was going into kidney failure. Several doctors attended to him and were all incredible - being very straightforward about the seriousness of the issue and the cost of his hospitalization (3 full days) and showing such care toward my sweet boy. They tended to him with the urgency required, kept me updated frequently and allowed me to visit him at my leisure, and gave me discounted care for his side effect GI issues at our follow up appointment. All of the staff from the front to the back of the house were incredible, and I couldn’t be more grateful for what they do. I hope I don’t need to go back, but if we ever do I’ll go there with the utmost confidence!
Jo Elliott
The best front office staff and loving; caring doctors and assistants! The absolute best for routine and emergency care!
Gari Jo Pazdzinski
I could not ask for a better group of veterinarians for normal day to day issues or emergency issues. The care they offer both to a pet and the owner is terrific. I had two older cats that required emergency visits prior to their passing and VCA Alexandria Staff were there with me helping me make the hard decisions. And now with my new kittens, they are there helping me through kitten issues.
Christa Lyons
For the past 20 years I have gotten such peace of mind knowing that my cats (my babies) are getting such great care at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital. I have such great confidence in Dr. Baxter's advice that my husband and I relied on her advice several times as to when we should have a beloved cat put to sleep. That is always a VERY difficult and painful decision.
Christine West
VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital has amazing staff and doctors! They were able to quickly diagnose my kitty with a really serious disease (pancreatitis) and get her treatment, which included a "Snorkel" (a tube inserted directly into her neck and down her throat for us to use to feed her and give her medication). The staff were all really kind to us, and took great care of my baby while she was there, and everyone we dealt with was knowledgeable about medications, treatments, behaviors to look out for, etc.
Dr. Terrio and Dr. Ayer were the main veterinarians for my kitty and Dr. Terrio was especially open to me sending her daily updates and concerns via email so she could get a good read on the progress.
They were all AMAZING and ended up saving my baby's life! It's been just over a year now and she's back to her normal self <3 I'm so lucky to have found them - their emergency care and ongoing specialty care were what saved my kitty's life! I'm forever grateful and will never take my cats to another veterinarian ever.

I had a total emergency w/ my dog yesterday and my regular vet wasn't available but urged me to go to a vet ER, so I called VCA Alex and they were able to see her immediately. The staff was beyond awesome; they were friendly, efficient, and very caring. They helped me safely get Annie out of my car and into the hospital and talked to me the whole time with reassurance and compassion. I never felt alone, even though I'd never been there before.
After observing her and doing some tests, Dr. Smail was able to correctly and quickly diagnose what was wrong w/ her. I went from shaking - thinking that I was going to have to put her down - to crying with relief and happiness b/c she was eventually going to be okay. They kept her overnight and although it was lonely back home, I knew she was where she should be. Now she's sleeping at my feet again, and I can't thank VCA enough. I have a thorough treatment plan to follow, and I know they're available 24/7 if I need them. It made me realize that not only did VCA save my dog...they saved me. Just like Annie did when I rescued her. Thank you to VCA and the big guy upstairs for giving me more time w/ my baby. God bless all of you!
Becca Rami
I love this practice. The staff and drs communicate with me in a way I have not experienced at any other veterinary practice. They genuinely care about their patients and work to be very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend.
Martin “Shep” Shepherd
Dr. Suarez is our veterinarian and always provides the best care to all of our pets. We and our dogs recommend her without hesitation!
Jason Hunter
We have been bringing out cat here for 10 years and we love it. When possible we try to see Dr. Augustine, however all the vets we've had appointments with have been fantastic.
Yes, you'll have to wait in the waiting room past your appointment time. However, I also have to wait past my appointment time at the pediatrician's office too. I consider it a minor inconvenience for the excellent care of our feline family member.
I would recommend, without reservation, this animal hospital to anyone considering it for their pet.
Sheena Rooke
I moved to the area and was looking for a vet that had specialized doctors and found VCA Alexandria. Every doctor my dogs have seen have been wonderful and empathetic. My favorite doctor is Dr. Terrio as she seems to care so much about my dogs.
Even though they are a busy hospital they always fit my dogs in for an appointment on short notice when there is an emergency. One of my dogs got very sick and was very well cared for at the emergency hospital.
Cheri Manning
I rescued a 6 week old kitten from the streets of DC back in June. He obviously hadn't eaten in a long time and had a very scary looking wound on his belly. I took him to Alexandria Animal Hospital on the advice of my regular vet since they weren't equipped to deal with emergencies. After an immediate triage, the wonderful technician determined that the kitten wasn't in immediate danger and recommended that I wait 30 minutes because I could then book a "regular" appointment instead of emergency and save money. I'm not sure a lot of emergency facilities would do that! Dr. Galvan saw my little kitten and took the most amazing care of him. I've been taking him back to her for all of his follow-ups and I couldn't be happier. Everyone at this clinic seems to go above and beyond and to truly care about the well-being of their patients. Potus and I will be eternally grateful for the care and compassion of everyone at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital!
Melanie Weaver
Dr. Hilson and staff were wonder as we said goodbye to our beloved kitty! They were kind and compassionate.

We had to go to VCA Alexandria for the first time last week when the elderly family cat declined quickly and it was after hours. We called ahead with some questions and they took the cat's name. When we walked in, all we had to say was "This is Agnes" and they took us back to a room right away. The doctor and vet tech confirmed it was an end-of-life situation and they were so supportive during the euthanasia process, explaining everything and giving us the time we needed. Dr. Sheldon was so caring throughout and even wrote my in-laws a handwritten note afterwards with her condolences which meant so much to them. Even in an upsetting situation, we came away from it knowing we had done the right thing and gone to the right place. Practically speaking, the cost was less than half of what we expected, even though as pet owners we'd pay whatever it takes for their comfort in the end. I'm not one to write reviews, but felt that VCA's outstanding service and support should be acknowledged!
Ray Nash
I went there for my dog smiley because she had hot spot, staff are nice, waiting time is like a hour for you to check in till you meet a doctor . The doctor was very nice and professional and explained everything we needed to know about our dog overall health and he was very generous with information and advice.
Price was high about 600 dollars for blood test and check up and 2 medications I checked online was a lot cheaper for the meds. But I recommend the doctor who checked our dog out.

During a recent visit with my regular Vet I learned that my cat needed emergency care. Having used VCA AAH for prior emergencies, I drove there immediately. My Vet had called ahead and VCA AAH personnel were waiting for me. They took Mr. Stripes right away and keep me apprised during the afternoon as I waited. My cat went on to stay in the ICU for 3.5 days. VCA AAH personnel thoroughly reviewed the treatment plan and the expected costs. During the time my cat was in ICU I received phone updates 2X per day from the Vet on duty. The updates were quite detailed and they were also personalized, i.e., it was clear to me that they were spending time with my cat and they came to know his personality. That meant a lot because I was not able to visit each day.
I have been very pleased with my prior VCA AAH experiences, and was pleased as well with my most recent experience. I highly recommend VCA AH.
Gina Ghemadi
Excellent doctors who take the time to listen to concerns you may have about your pet's health. They have evening appointments and a 24-hour emergency section. They even send out a reminder email when my dog's vaccinations are due. They are a little pricey, but on par for the area. I recommend VA Alexandria to any pet owners in the area.
Carrington Estates
Dr. Chiang and Alexandria Animal Hospital are awesome! Took our one year-old male Lab for a neutering. Everything went great. Dr. Chiang reached out to us twice following the procedure to see how things were going. How cool is that? We've used AAH for both our Labs and have always been extremely happy with their service. Great place with great vets!
Peter Paris
Good, caring doctors. Very professional staff. They diagnosed a gall bladder infection in my cat and treated it successfully.
Stacia Rogan
VCA Alexandria has been our vet since January 2016. At the time, we had two senior kitties with a number of health issues. Dr. Terrio has been amazing in treating them. We've also (unfortunately) had several opportunities to use the emergency clinic services. They've always been great with our cats, including during the sudden decline and passing of our 17 year old diabetic. They're knowledgeable but also reasonable in explaining options and letting you make decisions rather than automatically taking the most expensive route. We'll continue to go there as long as we have pets.
Terry Michael
My two dogs are so well-cared for by the staff and the vets no matter what the problem might be. If I feel it's an emergency, they will get me in ASAP and will always alert my vet of choice if they are on site. Both dogs have had surgery there, and the recovery period was almost immediate. It's a great place!
Heather Cox
Our two dogs required emergency visits - they were prompt with the service, clear with explanations and empathetic to the situation (and kind to my dogs). I also used the emergency services 7 years ago and they did amazing work for my Golden who had been hit by a bus. I trust these folks for great care in tough situations.
Hanna Hickman
My two beagles have been cared for at Alexandria Animal Hospital over the last ten years. Overall, I think they're great. Prices are quite high (especially, it seems, since VCA bought the practice). However, they have a really comprehensive facility and set of services there. They perform surgeries, they have a pretty large ICU for animals that need to stay with them to recover, they have imaging capabilities (x-rays and ultrasounds, for example), and they can do or send out any blood work or pathology that you need. They also have an after hours emergency clinic: it's pricey, and the doctors are more like ER doctors (stabilizing patients, rather than comprehensively treating them), but it can be, quite literally a lifesaver. This is a good animal hospital to use if you have older animals or ones with complex medical needs - they really take those issues seriously and work hard to find answers and successful treatments. Drs. Krochak and Cohen are especially great, and Dr. Chiang's acupuncture treatments really helped one of my dogs with her back pain.
Michelle Burrell Sherman
This animal hospital is one of the best in the area especially for emergencies. When my yorkie was sick shortly after he came home, it was so easy to come over and see one of the vets right away. They have all the necessary equipment at hand and the staff are really nice. I also used them for several emergencies I had with my boxer in the past. They are always open.
My only negative is the cost especially for emergency visits. I am not sure you can call this a negative since all animal hospitals are pretty expensive.
In the end it comes down to good care and I am sure they have seen all sorts of animal issues.
Jessica Duckett
From the first moment I called, these people were amazing! I was nervous and scared for my cat, thought his leg was broken! They were waiting for us by name when we got there! Took him back and sedated him and gave him meds almost immediately! The doctor Dr. Mu communicated very clearly and was very helpful. He did what he need to treat binx and nothing more! As a catmom, this is my first time with a vet emergency. VCA took care of us, and we will definitely be using them in the future ! Prices seemed very fair provided it was 11pm on a Saturday! Thank you Dr. Mu!!!! Binx is feeling much better
Fahad Bakir
Such a loving and caring staff! Nobody I would trust more to take care of our family members.
Evan Wilson
The vets and staff at VCA are among the most professional and courteous that my wife and I have every met. They also saved our dog from certain death after he suffered an episode of torsion. VCA is probably not the cheapest vet in town, but I've never seen better care or service anywhere.
Casidy Jahnke Robison
I've taken my dog to Alexandria Animal Hospital since she was a puppy. I have always been impressed by their professionalism, expertise, and compassion. We have visited for regular checkups, illnesses, and a minor 3:00 am emergency. They are great!
melanie engelen
Dr. Terrio is awesome! She is so good with our cat and dog! We love her! The office staff is exceptional as well! We have taken our kids to this veterinary for 24 years and I would never change!
Laura Severance
They were great! I brought my dog in because he broke a tooth. They saw us right away and were very gentle with him. The vet talked to me and gave me detailed information about his condition and appropriate next steps and answered all my questions. I really appreciate their compassion, kindness, and patience! Will definitely go back for any other emergencies!

My family has relied on this hospital beginning back in the 1970s to take care of our pets. First, our dog Willie, then a break of abut 15 years. Then came Sandy, then Shelby.....all three wonderful dogs that we adored. Now, my latest fur babies, my beautiful cats Khloe and Cleo are under the care of Dr. Shannon Etter Talbott, as were Sandy and Shelby. She is the best! The faith and trust I have in her knows no bounds.

Best active clinical skills for surgery. When my older pet has to have surgery, I trust this facility because they have a large volume of surgery in their practice. Further, their facilitate (with the recent updates) can handle surgeries. Finally, you have the option for the doctor/veterinarian that performed the diagnosis to perform the actual surgery, which ensures consistent care.
Joanna Tidwell
We've always received excellent treatment at VCA. At our last visit, our dog was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor. Dr. Talbott was very compassionate and helpful. I was struggling with both our dog and a baby and Dr. Talbott and the whole staff made sure we were comfortable while Rupert underwent testing, and helped us get back to our car after the visit.

My little one got very sick back in May and stayed at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital for 5 days. I spoke to multiple doctors throughout the stay and they were all great. I take her back to Dr Cohen on a regular basis and he's the best! I woud recommend this clinic to anyone. It's clean, everyone is friendly and most important, the doctors are knowledgable and really care.
Michael Balady
I should have written this review sooner but they are fantastic and caring and unique among the veterinary facilities in the area.
The provided end of life care to my pup Jessie.
They were compassionate and caring to both my spouse and me and Jessie
If you have a doubt don't.
Dr. Michael Balady.

I had to go here for an emergency vet call with my dog. The staff was so wonderful and they made his last moments as comfortable as possible. They were fantastic with me and made sure I had enough information to make the best choice for my dog. I will be bringing my animals here from now on.
Jessica Claypool
We brought our dog into VCA in the middle of the night. She was I great pain and we were very upset. The front desk staff and assistant were warm and comforting. The took our dog immediately and walked us through everything they were doing with her. The vet was just as kind and thorough. They also followed up with a call to check on her and make sure she was doing ok. Also, we felt the cost was reasonable.
Janet Bickett
The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Everyone takes great care of my cat from regular visits, dental care, even emergency visits. They are always professional and thorough. I never worry when they are taking care of Kitty!!
Anne Kelly
The Alexandria Animal Hospital provides first rate care. We have brought Chance there since he was a puppy. We have been served by several vets, all of whom treated him with care, love, and the best knowledge. We wouldn't go anywhere else. Thank you.

I am a reading specialist and bring my dog to my tutoring sessions in Old Town. My dog must have whacked his face against something, because his muzzle suddenly swelled, his gums were red, and he was drooling heavily. He cracked a fang in the past, so I worried. I phoned VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital for an emergency appointment. They squeezed me in and saw my dog with less than 20 minutes of waiting. After a thorough exam, the vet found no permanent damage, but said he would likely be sore for a few days. This was far better news than having to pull a tooth. VCA Alexandria's service was excellent, the wait was not particularly long (for an emergency appointment), and the vet was excellent. I recommend them.

Sunday my husband and I called VCA because our sweet dog Sophie was not doing well. Initially when we came to VCA the tech carried Sophie to the back to get her vitals and evaluate her. After some time Dr. Hilson came out and brought us to a private room to talk to us. He informed us on what his thoughts were and that he would like to analyze her blood to rule out kidney or liver issues. He let us know that she had something neurological going on and he could make her comfortable until we were able to see a specialist the next morning. When we brought Sophie back home she got a lot worse and was in so much pain, she could no longer stand or hold her head up. We can not thank Dr. Hilson for how kind and compassionate he was throughout the entire evening. He was so thoughtful that he even wrote a personalized card to us for the loss of our sweet girl!

This is the best veterinarian establishment I have yet been to. It is also the only local shop that is open for emergencies 24/7. Dr. Talbot is an absolute DOLL: going FAR out of her way to give me and my kitty cat customized service!! Ms. Grace, of the Front Desk, has also offered exceptional service and follow-up. I would go there all the time, using VCA Alexandria as my main veterinarian, if only distance did not preclude this. ~Michael

One morning two years ago I awoke to my cat howling in pain. It was 2:45 a.m., and ACA Alexandria was the closest emergency veterinary clinic. I went there as fast as possible, only to find out that my cat was suffering from an incurable blood clot. He had to be put down that morning. During the entire ordeal the vet who I was dealing with was extremely compassionate and sensitive to the emotions I was experiencing. Considering the horrible night this turned out to be, I was grateful for the professionalism and sympathy shown by the VCA Alexandria staff.
I've since gotten a new cat, and VCA Alexandria became my go-to vets. Thankfully I've only been there for annual check-ups with this one, but the staff has always been friendly and great to deal with.
Onix Fuentes
Wonderful service and personal. Its my first time with a pet and my first pet accident. They helped my cat that got his leg broke. They are very nice, respectful and very loving.
It my be kind of high in the prices like any vet but you can be sure that your pet and you will receive real quality.
Andy Guyer
We always have a top notch experience at Alexandria Animal Hospital. We use them for regular veterinary services and have had to use the emergency services once. All of our experiences with them have been positive. They do seem to be pretty expensive, but we've found the quality of care worth it.
Emily Lane
Everything was great with my cats first exam. The first exam was free, so I can’t comment on the overall price/value, but all staff was very nice and professional. Price for nail trims are comparably steep for the area, so watch out for that, but otherwise a good experience!!
Theresa Dixon
Dr. Farrell provided care to our Rottie through out her life. She was professional, caring and not afraid of a dog that was not an easy patient. Several other professionals helped with our other dog's visits/needs. We were always satisfied. They always gave us options and let us choose the direction to take with the problem.
Jen
Love these guys. I first brought my cat here 9 years ago for an emergency and liked the care they gave so much, I kept them as the primary vet for my cat. I have a cat that is somewhat resistant to vet visits. They do a great job of dealing with him. They are very friendly and always take the time to address any questions or concerns I may have.
Jonathan Mazur
The folks at VCA Alexandria are terrific (the reason I still drive up here from Lorton). The only reason I can't give 5 stars are the prices... yikes. But they work with your budget when possible and they really are great from the veterinarians to the vet techs to the office/counter staff. Truly wonderful!
Steve Diatz
Our wonderful tabby 'Alexis' has received stellar and compassionate care at VCA- Alexandria for about 7 years now. We always seek to have Dr Julie Augustine render care, as she is so dedicated and personable when examining and diagnosing our cat. My wife and I feel that we are very fortunate to have such wonderful veterinary services in the staff at VCA-Alexandria Animal Hospital, and we heartily recommend this establishment. Steve and Heather Diatz, Alexandria, VA
Krista Contino Saumby
I am a mush about my cat. He's awesome. He plays fetch, no joke. I was really nervous because his old vet moved, and I didn't want to take him to a new place, especially since the one thing he's not great at is being at the vet. He shakes the whole time. VCA was amazingly kind to him and fussed over him as much as I'd hope they would, and they made his teeth all better. No extra work done even though it was clear they could have removed his one tooth and made money off of it rather than taking the time they did for what I was already going to pay. The ONE thing that made me feel weird was when I dropped him off, they gave me the empty carrier back, and I wasn't used to that, but they even got him done first because they didn't want to stress him out more given his fear, so I'll trade his comfort for mine any day in that situation.
Thank you to Dr. Talbott and the whole staff!
Catha Pavloff
I have been coming here with my cats for about 12 years.
I have had first rate service and medical treatment from all vets, but especially from Dr. Chiang and Dr.Suarez.
Dr. Chiang is our primary vet. She is compassionate, knowledgeable, patient, friendly and always responsive when I leave a voice mail message.
My cats has had some serious medical conditions, but have done very well, in large part due to Dr.'s, Chiang, Suarez, and others.
The technicians are friendly and compassionate.
The front desk staff is currently terrific, too.
That wasn't the case in the past. Improvements have been made, and it shows.
Elizabeth Hoefer
All doctors are thorough and they provide clear information and guidance. Animal and customer friendly. Love the staff at the desk and the techs. Most importantly, they are all kind, especially when kindness is most needed. Excellent veterinary practice.
Galina Hasson
I took my kitty to the ER for trouble breathing. I called and asked for help bringing him inside from my car and the receptionist quickly came to help me. He was quickly triaged and evaluated by a vet. Unfortunately, he was very sick and I had to put him to sleep. Dr. Gilbert was incredibly nice, explained what was going on, and gave me as much time as I needed with my little boy before he was put to sleep. I am grateful that everyone at VCA made this process as easy as possible since I was a wreck. The cost for the ER was very reasonable as well (surprisingly). Although this has nothing to do with my cat, they put me in a room so I could breastfeed my screaming newborn son (while my cat was triaged elsewhere). It was nice of them.
Christy Hollywood
We've been going here for 3 years since adopting our lab mix. They have been great - when our dog had massive spontaneous bleeding at 2am, they took us right in and treated him before shock set in (which is often fatal). They are definitely there when you need them.
Elizabeth Koren
I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews for this clinic. I found them to be amazing every time, including when my cat fell off our 4th story balcony after trying some ill-advised acrobatics on the railing. The costs for both regular vet care/vaccines and emergency care are on par with other vets and clinics in the area and the service has been great. Look for my longer review on Yelp!
James Alpert
Overall I have received very good care with AAH. Dr. Augustine is a very caring, knowledgeable veterinarian. Services at AAH are indeed expensive so you do have to ask a lot of questions. Dr. Augustine will definitely shoot straight with you about whether a service is actually necessary, so I do highly recommend her. She also likes big dogs!
Alexis MacDonald
All we have to say is that Dr. Julie Augustine saved our little kitty's life. With a mysterious allergy causing all sorts of awful symptoms, she worked diligently with us to find a diet that would help. She even went the extra mile to diagnose a parasite that was lurking beneath it all. If you need a trustworthy and thoroughly knowledgeable vet, then you need to take your animal to VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital.
sandra evans
Competent, attentive veterinarians; responsive administrative staff; clean, comfortable facility, an excellent practice overall. With this practice, there's never a worry about having your pet seen in an emergency, they are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Tracy Davis
I went to VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital on an emergency basis for my dog Demi - who became non-repsonsive and was dehydrated. The professionalism and attention that was given to me and my dog was exceptional. That was the first time that my Demi had ever been sick, and they explained everything to me in full detail. I appreciate their level of care and ability to make me feel comfortable, during such a traumatic time.
Justin Tyler
Recently had to put my best friend of 13 years to sleep. They made the process as gentle and caring as such a somber and depressing event could possibly have gone. They made sure she was well taken care of and all options were fully explored, then they gave us as much time as we needed to prepare to say goodbye. It was almost surreal how peaceful the entire thing was. I would absolutely recommend this hospital to everyone I know.
Alejandro Rodriguez
Great service. We had our pet spayed. It was our first experience and when we arrived they made us feel at ease. They took good care and followed up after the procedure to see how she was doing.
Staff are pleasant and responsive to our needs and concerns. Highly recommend them.
Ellen Epstein
I love this VCA! The care I have gotten there has always been expert and on target. Also, the other vets I have used in the past do not have overnight care and they always sent me to Alexandria Animal Hospital anyway, so I am using them exclusively. Dr. Krochak is my favorite vet there, but they are all friendly and competent.
Kevin Phillips
We brought our dog in at midnight because his penis wouldn't retract back into his skin (yeah, gross). They fixed him right up FREE OF CHARGE! So nice of them! We will definitely be switching vets to this place. Thanks so much!
Kristin Hart
We had our first visit today with Dr. Sophia Chiang. The front desk staff was wonderful. We only had to wait a few minutes to be called back. Dr. Chiang was so gentle and good with our dog and seems very knowledgeable. The office is under renovation but it was still easy to get in and out. We will definitely be going back.
WJ Jacobs
Drs. Augustine and Terio have cared for my dogs over the past 12 years and done an excellent job. They accept that I am a Holistic caregiver and do the same for my dogs. I recommend them to anyone who asks about good Vets.
Daniel Bortz
Can't say enough about VCA. We came in close to midnight because our dog Paris ate chocolate. Doctor Terrio went above and beyond treating her for the chocolate poisoning. She took it upon herself to examine our dog's stomach with an ultrasound because she didn't like how it was shaped. She ended up finding a mass, that turned out to be an enlarged spleen (unrelated to the chocolate). She probably saved our dog's life because we were not aware of this issue and thought she was just chubby. A ruptured spleen would have surely killed her. Thank you so much for the care you showed Paris and us because we were freaking out and Doctor Terrio calmed us down.
Pam Escobar
We have been clients of the Alexandria Animal Hospital for years and
have found everyone from front line staff to their vets to be very
sensitive, tuned in to our needs, and quite skilled in the diagnosis
and management of various medical issues. Have recommended
them to many people.
matthew Gleason
VCA has aways been there for our animals. Our pets have been patients over our 35 years of living in Alexandria. They have cared for our total of 6 cats, 1 dog, 1 geneua pig, and an emergency visit for a school pet rabbit on the 4th of July. All the doctors treat the animals with dignity and are understanding of the part our animals play in our family.
Jim Shepard
Have been going here for years. Extremely helpful that it is a 24 hour hospital. Just like kids, our pets don't just get sick during normal business hours. Everyone here seems to be both passionate about pets and very compassionate when it comes to difficult decisions in dealing with a sick animal.
Robert McCormick
Highly recommended. Very responsive and attentive practice (and they are an emergency animal hospital as well, something that could be invaluable at off-hours). Our vet, Dr. Terrio, also communicates by email, so we can ask non-emergency questions between visits, giving our dog even better care.
Bradley Austin
Wonderful people, taking care of loved pets in normal and the worst of times.
Cynthia Smith
My dog recently had a broken toe and needed a splint with bandage. Murphy was getting his bandage changed. I explained I was a Washington Capitals fan and to please not put black and gold on my dog due to the upcoming Penguins game. Not only did they use red and blue, they wrote lets go Caps. Good Customer Service.
Paul Murray
Love this vet. They seem to always know what to do to fix our fur babies.
janet coates
I came late at night for what I thought was my cat's discomfort from his UTI. Unfortunately, his xray showed massive amounts of fluid in his lungs and heart--he basically was panting from drowning, not from UTI pain. I had to put him down; the doctor was so sensitive and caring, this is where I will definitely return for care of my other cat. I recommend them without reservation!
David Smith
I've brought both of my borzois in to VCA Alexandria during the past year with life threatening emergencies. The quick responses and excellent service we received ensured longer lives for both. We are very happy with the care and attention. We highly recommend this particular hospital!
Alexandra Flood
After a batch of windy thunderstorms, a baby bird was knocked from his nest only to land upside with a hurt wing. Myself and neighbors tried finding a nest to put the baby bird back into with no luck. This plus the fact the bird was slightly injured, hungry, and cold made us call VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital to ask what the best corse of action would be (leave the bird alone or bring it to a wildlife sanctuary). The staff on call were very informative and we decided bringing the bird to them to be examined and then passed onto their wildlife partner would be the safest outcome/situation for the bird. When we pulled up with the bird, a vet and his vet tech/assistant were ready and waiting for us. They immediately took him into their care and made him warm, full, and happy!
V. Mendiaz
Very courteous staff, nice holding area for a variety of pet personalities, and nice amenities.
Christa Lyons
I can not say enough about the terrific care our cats have received over the past 20 years from Dr. Baxter, and your other veteranians. We have total confidence in Dr. Baxter. In fact, back in 2010, our beloved cat, Alessandro, was very sick. We took him up to see Dr. Baxter, and she gave us advice as to possible next steps. My husband, and I, said to Dr. Baxter, "Dr. Baxter, if Alessandro were your cat, what would you do?" We followed her advice and boarded him there at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital so that she could keep an eye on him. On New Years morning Dr. Baxter called us, advising us that she recommended that Alessandro be put to sleep. My husband and I promptly jumped into our car and drove up to VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital to be with Alessandro when Dr. Baxter put him to sleep. It gave us such peace of mind, at such a painful time in our life, knowing that Dr. Baxter was looking out for us, and our "baby" Alessandro.
Becky Humphrey
I have had all of three of my cats at the hospital. Dr. Chiang and Dr. Galvan were the best! My cats received quality treatment and care at every visit. I am planning to take my one and only remaining kitty left for a Sr. checkup soon.
Alex
They loved my dog and my dog seems to love them as well. The staff was friendly and courteous and the place was neat and did not smell or anything. This is my first vet so I did not really know what to expect at first but it was a great experience.
Kenneth Horner
I can't say enough good things about the staff and care here. Ive had multiple emergency event visits and each time have been helped quickly and have had confidence in the staff from front desk through surgeon. Worth every penny. So long as I live in northern Virginia. I won't be going anywhere else.
Luke Avedon
They were incredibly compassionate and kind to us when our beloved cat had a horrific accident. Ultimately we had to put our pet down. But they were extremely helpful every step of the way. Definitely recommended.
Cindy Patton
We arrived the evening of Dec 26 quite hysterically with my tiny teacup chi, Migas, who had already succumbed to her injuries. The staff met us at the door. They were incredibly compassionate and empathetic. They offered to do a little paw print and wrapped her up very gently to go home. They helped me through one of the worst nights of my life. I am very grateful and highly recommend.
Elizabeth Troncoso
Always THE BEST CARE for our furry family! Dr's. and staff are incredible. BRAVO! 👏 …
Bridget Jaspart
Just had my first vet visit during COVID and they were super organized and efficient with curbside pickup. Dr. Torrence was great to speak with on the phone from my car and I didn't feel like I was missing anything I wouldn't get in person.
William Taylor
Have taken three cats and two dogs to these wonderful folks for their entire lives' care. Service is always excellent, staff is always helpful and professional, and the doctors simply love their work and our pets.
Melanie Rowley
Always quality care and excellent service. There is nowhere else we'd take our beloved pets - and we moved so now we make the drive from Baltimore - it's worth it! Dr. O'brien is excellent and is in on Sundays so it all works well!
Lynnette Fishburn
I really like all the staff at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital. All are knowledgeable and professional. My beagle boy has been seen by several of the vets practicing there and I have had a great experience with all of them.
Chad
The first time I visited was to take my 3 month old to an emergency appointment (turned out to be nothing). The staff and physicians were so pleasant, reassuring, and competent that we quickly became part of the VCA Alex AH family and have been visiting (not too frequently, thankfully) since and will continue for the foreseeable future.
Thanks VCA!
F53P49N47
I am very happy with the service I receive. The reception desk is great, I like several vets, I ask many questions because veterinary care is so amazing and I love learning more, and they are very happy to explain. I don't mind paying more for the security I have in their care.
Cindy Stewart
Before moving to Alexandria from California 10 years ago, this practice was recommended by our CA vet. We love this place- kind, committed staff and great vets. Highly recommend!
Jennifer Hagar
My 14 year old baby a German Shepard (he was abandoned by his mom so I took care of him from the day he was born now!) has heart issues - he is seen by CVCA for cardiac ultrasounds and such but 2 weeks ago at 4am (isn't it always in the middle of the night!) he collapsed - I thought he had died of a heart attach but he was alive I was FRANTIC absolutely freaking out and the nurses and doctor and receptionist at Alexandria totally took care of him and me - they took him right back to the critical care unit and were helping him even before I signed in!! I was so grateful for the immediate response!! I had been to a closer ER to my house and I was there 10 min with my dog lying on the floor and no one helped us - I did not even see a doctor - there was no one in the lobby and that other place was making my sick dog wait. Alexandria took him right in and SAVED HIS LIFE!!
Craig Boke
Hard to get appointment quickly so they charge $140 for walk in vs $80 for appointment. General care ok but they don't do allot of emergency procedures. When you have to euthenize your pet because they can't save it, you always wonder if you should have gone to south paws or rsrc...
John Crain
Outstanding care, friendly docs and techs, prompt service, flexible appointment hours to accommodate the most challenging of schedules. AAH has cared for our dog for 8 years, and we wouldn't go anywhere else.
Alison Trimble

David Baragas
We had an emergency with our jack Russell tonight it is midnight! My girl and I had no idea what to do! We called and Lindsey calmed me down gave me some advice and I felt so much better after talking to her! Max is getting back to normal but we are so grateful to Lindsay, we can now relax and we didn't have to spazz out! Thank you!
Seth Watts

I brought my puppy here after trying a different urgent care facility that I did not like. Everyone was very friendly from the beginning. Dr. Sardanovski was very professional and answered all of my questions. She gave me options and ultimately I decided to have an x-ray just to be on the safe side. She then brought me in to view the scans and followed up with me the same day after a radiologist reviewed them. This is by far the best experienced i’ve had at a vet clinic and I would definitely recommend coming here!
