I have recently had to take my furry babies here quite often unfortunately. Although it has not been under great circumstances, Dr Carlson has done everything possibly to help me deal with issues as they arise. This woman is the best vet I've ever had. I think reviews are important so I will elaborate. She is considerate to my anxiety. She takes the time to read my facial responses to things and gives me as much information as she can. She calms me without giving me false hope. She loves cats and this is important if you have a cat - lets be honest - not everyone is a cat person. I missed a call with her in regards to lab work and she was kind enough to leave a note with the tech to give to me- knowing I would call and be super worrried the following day. She takes time - that honestly she probably doesn't have- and explains so much to help me and my husband deal with what's to come. I'm sad, and honestly going broke- having to see her so much. But I wouldn't want anyone else. Thank you for caring for my furry babies and ultimately caring for me.

Cannot say enough good about this Veterinary Clinic. We moved from Ohio to the Alexandria area, and recently rescued our little guy Starsky before moving. We asked multiple friends and neighbors in the area for a Vet recommendation, and Hometown Veterinary Clinic was the #1 recommendation. Very friendly Staff, our Veterinarian is wonderful, knowledgeable, and takes the time to explain everything. They review options and anticipated costs so you can make an informed decision. I've raised and even bred dogs for over 35 years, and worked with many Veterinary services. Highly can give Hometown and everyone there 5 Stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We’ve been going to Hometown Vet for 18 years. Dr. Smith and the other veterinarians are very professional while also being kind and considerate. They have worked with me several times in regards to finances when my two dogs got into a fight. Dr. Smith sought alternate treatments and genertic prescriptions that would address their needs, all the ehile being very compassionate in their care . I would and always do recommend HomeTown Vet.

Being new to the area I really searched for a caring vet practice for my pup! Hometown Vet is tremendous. I love the way everyone interacts with the dog -holding them, helping them, giving treats and outstanding medical care. The rooms are clean and accommodating. I provided some key items I wanted addressed during the visit and everything was covered plus the extra information to plan for future Medical needs. The technicians were outstanding and loving and efficient. My dog responded as if she already knew everyone there. Tiger was quite at home and got lots of TLC! The only rough part was the scheduling of my first initial visit as I was put on hold numerous numerous times over days of calling and no one called me back and I told me they were very busy office without any way to confirm the visit. I can see now why they are so busy! I'm so happy my neighbor told me about such a wonder team of professionals to care for Tiger. thank you for the excellent care at Hometown Vet!!! Best visit ever !

The doctors and staff here are incredible! My dog absolutely hates having his nails clipped and is a challenging patient to say the least. Everyone at Hometown was so patient and forgiving of my pets behavior today during his nail appointment and created such a safe atmosphere. Hometown Vet is excellent. Every doctor there is comprehensive and easily explains what any issue is with my pet and what the potential treatments are. In particular, Dr. Carlson had a myriad of *actual research papers* memorized about golden retrievers. She had a wealth of knowledge and was extremely helpful when I took my golden retriever puppy there. They've been excellent to her since, with easy drop-offs for samples and quick scheduling for in-person visits. I also take my 2 indoor cats there, who have seen great care (much better and more direct than any of the *four* previous vets they've been to!). It's also very reassuring that they have an operating room on-premise in case of both routine problems or emergencies. I was pleasantly surprised given the building doesn't look particularly large. They did a fantastic job with my dog's spay and often recommend reasonable "bundled" items - in this case, they asked if I wanted her microchipped at the same time. Saved me a bunch of money instead of having to go back again for something that I wanted anyway. I wish every vet office was this caring and professional.

The whole staff was very nice and made me and my dog hazel feel comfortable immediately. I can tell that they genuinely care about animals and I'm excited to have them as the clinic that will look after my dog for as long as I live in the area. My dog is usually anxious when going to the Vet but she did better than ever being in their care.

I have taken my cat Madison to Hometown Veterinary Clinic for several years since moving to the area, and they have always provided great service. Recently, and unfortunately, I had to make the very tough decision with her Vet to have Madison put to sleep after discovering extensive tumors and cancer. This is always an incredibly tough thing to do, but the veterinarian and all of the staff at the clinic made things a bit easier--they all truly care and were very comforting through this time. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of vet services for your beloved pet.

Banfield contract came to an end (hallelujah!), so it was time to find a better vet for my pup who has idiopathic epilepsy. Dr Smith came in highly recommended from a friend very dear to me. I trust him fully, so I know she had to be pretty great. After reading about Dr Smith I realized we absolutely must meet her. Had our meet and greet appointment this week and it was absolutely fantastic! The amount of noted she took on one piece of paper, all the details related to my pup and his treatments. She answered every single question so clearly, she made him feel so comfortable by playing with him and giving him treats. Thank you, Dr Smith! We can’t wait to see you again soon for our follow up appointment!

My Dog had never had it needed proper vet care till I moved to the area just Vaccines and an annual check up and he was good and happy but once we moved to the area he started having skin issues after 1 appointment Hometown's vets had a plan and a way forward, they do all testing in house which saves money and they get you in on time when you set appointments. I am happy to report too that the My Dog is back to his happy self again and his skin issues are gone. The vets I have interacted with and assistants and front desk personal are all cheerful, positive and pleasant people with many years of knowledge and experience in the industry and will answer all of my questions. My Dog is not afraid to see them either and one visit he didn't even want to leave. I highly recommend giving them a call and at least setting up an initial appointment with your pet to see what they are about with your own eyes and experience.

Hometown Vet goes the extra mile to make sure our pets are healthy and thriving! My dog had a rare illness that required a lot of testing to diagnose it and food adjustments to get him healthy. Dr. Carlson even reach out to me a few weeks after we got our dog on the prescribed medication to check-in and see how he's doing. I don't know many vets who would take the time to do that! We love taking our pets here.

She was on the floor with him, talking to him and checking out the issue we came in for. She’s just so loving and thorough making sure she covered everything, we are very lucky to have found her.

The morning before finding Hometown Veterinary Clinic I had to bring my dog to the ER due to a few issues. The next day my dog got worse and I began to panic. ER Vet clinics are extremely expensive so I dialed around 12 different clinics before I came across this one. They had an opening for me and accepted me as a new client. They guided me on what needed to be done before arrival as well as what documents I need to provide. Once I arrived the entire staff was so welcoming and kind which helped ease a lot of my anxiety from what just happened with my dog. The vet that examined my dog was also so kind and sweet. I couldn't have asked for more when accidently stumbling upon this clinic. I highly suggest you don't second guess and just bring your dog here. The best experience I ever had in any kind of vet clinic. Still blows my mind! Thank you for helping my dog! :)

I finally left VCA vets as it felt more and more that they were looking at the $ signs and not helping my pet get better. One of my dogs has seizures and things weren’t getting better. After going to Hometown Vet, we tried altering the medication and within a couple of visits, my dog has not had a seizure since. It went from once every 10 days to now 9 months and counting.

We recently switched to hometown vet a few months ago and have been so impressed. They are responsive, caring, and really help do what’s best for your pet. I had a wonderful experience for all 3 of my unruly “kids” at their annual appointments and again today when they squeezed in a quick surgery for my pup. They are amazing, their prices are fair, and they really care. Will never take them anywhere else. UPDATE: It's been almost 2 years in their care now and I came back to say that this is hands down the best vet I have ever been to and the best in the area. All of the Veterinarians, Vet Techs, and front desk staff are caring, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. We look forward to bringing all our pets here and know they will always received the best and most compassionate care.

We have been using Hometown Veterinary Clinic and Doctor Melanie Smith for probably over 20 years, Dr. Smith has taken care of Our two Labs ,always giving Them the best in care and attention, Both Dogs Have enjoyed Her warm "Bedside" manner and looked at Her as a Friend. The care has always been first Class and the few small "emergencies" We have had were handled Very professionally by the other Doctors when Doctor Smith was not there. I love this Doggy Day Care but more importantly my girls do! I have a rescue who was extremely afraid of men and when I started at Bed & Biscuits there were only MEN running the daycare. I was nervous and anxious but the team was patient, loving and supportive (for all of us). IT did not happen over night but she gradually learned to trust that she was safe and today my sweet princess walks in with her head up and her tail wagging. I am a proud and happy mamma and I am so grateful for the Bed and Biscuits team who continue to love my girls.

I highly recommend this veterinary clinic. They are #1 in expertise and customer service, and most importantly (for me), they don't try to up sell me on products and services every time I go in. I actually stopped going to my previous vet because it seemed like they were always trying to get me spend an extra $400 or more on extra lab work, x-rays, cleanings, meds, supplements, etc., even if I was going there for routine check-ups. And if I didn't buy all the extras, I was guilt tripped for it. But I've never experienced anything like that at Hometown. They always tell me what the recommended care should be at each visit, and if I can't afford it all, they work with me to get the best possible care that is in my price range. As someone with multiple pets to care (and pay) for, that makes a HUGE difference to me. I feel like I can truly trust and respect their advice and recommendations.

VET: Great consistent experience for a number of years with Dr. Carlson. RECEPTIONIST: I'd like to see the Clinic prioritize Clients over marketers / sales reps. I waited some time to check out as a sales rep was drilling the receptionist on a variety of items to include details regarding their experience with the prior sales rep, confirming how long the Clinic has been without a rep, tips on selling her company's products to the Clinic's Clients, scheduling breakfast, lunch and/or dinner, etc. When the receptionist got up to secure a list of everyone working that day such that the sales rep could use that to support expense reimbursement for the "free" pack of a dozen donuts she was leaving, I finally spoke up. The other receptionist was on the phone the whole time. The receptionist saw that I was waiting the whole time and I even tried to re-hint that I was waiting via clearing my throat and shuffling my feet, but the sales rep was most definitely the Clinic's priority.

Our dog suffered an injury at 3 months old and was in to see the vet nearly weekly for the next 2 months. Despite the repeated trips as a pup and her recent spaying, she still LOVES her trips to the vet. Would highly recommend Hometown to anyone looking for veterinary services.

The staff is great with all the dogs and especially with my senior rescue pup with low vision. They are very thorough and explain whatever they are doing during their examination and communicate their findings and options in a kind and helpful manner. I have been taking my 4 legged family members to them for over 3 years. They have seen my pets through cancer, overweight, thyroid problems (requiring a referral for radiation treatment), teeth cleaning and regular shots. Through it all they have been a great support to me and overwhelmingly compassionate during my pets serious illness. Their office staff and technicians are extremely helpful and polite also. I’ve had excellent interaction with Dr Smith. She is a wonderful veterinarian. I am underwhelmed with Bed & Biscuits. I was taking my dog there for regular grooming. However, my last visit was $35 more because of pricing of new groomer (same cut as before). I wasn’t notified of drastic price difference until I picked up my dog. I can hire a mobile groomer for the amount I was charged plus it will eliminate my dog’s anxiety.

The staff at Hometown were all friendly and I was able to get an appointment in a reasonable time frame. My only complaint is that the tech pulled my adult cat out of his carrier by the scruff of his neck. This was unnecessary and really stressed him. The rest of the appointment went well though and the vet was gentle and did a great job explaining some of the health concerns for my cat and the potential diagnosis and treatment options.

They are as compassionate and caring as they are professional and knowledgeable. Melanie Smith has cared for numerous presidential pets and in my experience, has extended the very same quality of care to my pets, whether they were puppies or older dogs. Secondly, their doggy day care service is truly wonderful. If you’re looking for a place for your pets to blow off steam for a couple days of week that feels like home, this is your place. Definitely the best Vet I've every been to and I'm happy they're nearby. Unless you're having an appointment with the actual vet you're gonna be out in the lot and they'll take your dog in. My dog came down with some pretty bad allergies and while other vets just kept giving steroids and shrugging their shoulders, we came up with a plan to solve the problem permanently. It's expensive as expected but I've been advised in a couple situations towards a money saving option rather than pushed towards spending more.

I just switched vet practices so this is my first experience with Hometown Vet Clinic. I am very pleased with the level of care my dog received. Although I stayed in the car, the office kept me updated and informed; we also discussed some questions and concerns I had. I got the test results back in two days, which I thought was pretty quick. All in all, it was a good experience and I highly recommend them.

New to the area and needed a vet for my pup pretty quickly. I was able to get a next (business) day appointment, which was fantastic. My pup is a pretty anxious guy, especially in new settings. Dr. Sholes and the rest of the staff were extremely patient and careful with him, and made it an extremely pleasant experience. By the time I left, vet records had been transferred (Hometown did the coordination for me) from our old vet and I had a clear plan (with cost estimate) for follow up care. I highly recommend Hometown!

This is a good service. However, the prices seem a bit high in my opinion. It is convenient for me, since they are close, and they are also very professional and do offer great service. I have started to look at other more affordable services that I can use even though I have to travel a little bit further. For example, a spay for a dog would cost about $500 here for a dog 20lbs or under. I just can’t afford that. So I found a place that does it for half the price.

We are very pleased with Hometown Veterinary Clinic. It really starts from the time the receptionists pick up the phone. They are always polite, courteous, and eager to help you. When you enter the front door, they are always smiling among all the chaos that can be the waiting room of a Vet clinic. Dr. Carlson is GREAT! Called about my babygirl Juliet, who was a 5 week old stray kitten at the time, the wonderful lady who answered my call was SO SWEET and so personable and nice, she got me the soonest appointment available to take Juliet in and get her checked because she had an infection, she also called me 2 or 3 times over the next couple days just to check in on her and make sure she was eating and going to the bathroom and genuinely cared about my girl. I went to the appointment and she got checked out, they loved her, handled her in a way that made me comfortable and feel secure, gave us TONS of information and I am overall so happy I chose Hometown to be Juliet's vet <3 Thank you guys so much. Update! My Juju is a little over a year old now, we have gotten her spayed, and came to visit about a bacterial infection in her ear and everything was taken care of so well, the vet that cleaned out her yucky ear even came outside to show me how much gunk she pulled out and i thought that was so interesting and cool to see, and I'm really happy she even thought to show us. I love this Vet clinic, and even when we move, i will probably still make the drive to Hometown. I love all of the staff. One time there was a rescue kitten there who had just been brought in and they literally brought this baby out and let me meet him and snuggle him really quick and i thought that was so sweet that they allowed me to do so because i love kitties so much. I read some of the negative reviews and they really dont make sense to me, seems like there could be outside factors because Hometown is literally the best, most caring, most helpful vet I've ever been to.

Hometown is a perfect name for this practice. It is not one of those Vets where you feel like they don't know you and are enormous and just crank out appointments and dont know you or o your pets. They get to know you and you feel extremely cared for. I have been using Hometown for 15 years. Dr Smith and her staff are WONDERFUL. They have given such loving care of several of my animals. Dr Smith stitched up my dog Buford after a dog bite, fixed my 12 week old kitten with a broken arm, has given regular pet care and taken care of their overall health over the years. Yesterday was my first time visiting (just switched vets), and one thing I can say, everyone was SUPER friendly! It was a pleasant surprise, especially given how people seem to be in such a bad mood these days. The hoops you have to jump through at businesses due to COVID can get pretty irritating, but Hometown handled theirs well. I parked in the lot, called the number on the door, and they were out in maybe a minute to pick up the dog. I can't speak for bedside manner since I was waiting in the car the whole time, but as friendly as my vet was when she brought the dog back out, I'm sure it was just fine. I will be excited to have a more normal vet experience once the world is a little more normal, but given the circumstances, I'm very pleased with Hometown so far.

Hometown Veterinary Clinic has been the second home for my pets since I was referred to Dr. Smith in 2001. All three of my doggies have been cared for by her or one of her veterinarians. I have always been pleased and thankful for the services she provided for each of them. In fact, I have never even considered making a change. Dr. Smith is a well educated veterinarian and extremely conscientious in the diagnosis and treatment decisions she makes for our pets. Also, she makes each pet a friend. But she doesn't stop there, she has been so kind and thoughtful whenever I had to lose a pet. She truly cares about everyone. Her staff is efficient and friendly. Sophie, my curent pet, visits Dr. Smith's boarding facility, is always anxious to get there and leaves happy and looking good (Jesse is an excellent groomer). All staff were very patient and helpful except for one new. young assistant that wanted to ague with on the phone, hang up and then continue the argument in the parking lot. Had to request an employee to complete my transaction and ask questions regarding my dog's visit. Did not get the impression he was happy in his job and I was his verbal punching bag. The Doctor was honest and fair as I did not want to have to deal with multiple charges for unnecessary test/procedures. She got right to the point and respectively asked what they could do for y dog. Expensive but great service.

Claimed Hometown as my new vet after they took care of me when my 4-legged best friend of 8 years was passing away suddenly. They remained in contact post-passing (during COVID shutdown) and sent me a card with his paw print on it. It was touching to see that level of attentiveness and care when I was not even their client except for that one hour back in March. Not that my other vet was not accommodating, they are just to far away. I decided to take my other 4-legged companion to them and they treated him with respect and care, even though he did like all the treats, however, didn't care for all the probing, but he still enjoyed all the attention.

This review is strictly for Dr. Sholes and the vet techs, not the practice or any other vet. Dr. Sholes is an exquisite DVM. Her knowledge is tremendous and her demeanor is professional yet incredibly warm. She supports rescue and is a huge supporter of pitbulls. She does her best to give you the best care, while understanding clients may have limited resources. Further, she treats everyone with respect and goes above and beyond to ensure both the animal and the owner have everything they need to keep their fur friend happy and healthy. Finally, it is very obvious that she has an excellent relationship with the awesome vet techs there. I recommend Dr. Sholes for anyone looking for a vet in the NCR. You will not be disappointed!!!

Dr. Carlson is AMAZING! I had been looking for a new vet, and had wanted to do a meet and greet prior to Darby going in for an appointment. She hurt her paw, and I wasn't able to get into her old vet, so I called to see if Hometown could get us in. They could that afternoon, being a new patient, I was worried they would rush through the appointment. Dr. Carlson not only took the time to look at her paw and come up with a game plan, she discussed other issues I had been concerned about and some she was. We set a plan in motion and she's been great every time we've seen her. I am so happy with the practice that when my in-laws moved I immediately said I have the vet for you! The front staff is kind and efficient, I don't have to wait a long time to check out, which I did at my old vet. Highly recommend them!

Bottom line: I do not recommend this vet due to their prices, impersonal service, and pressure towards high-price treatments. We moved to Alexandria in May and chose Hometown Vet due to its nearly five star rating on Google, but the service has not been commensurate of that rating. Our first visit was to cure my dog’s ear and foot infection. The techs were nice and their service was efficient. The vet, however, was impersonal and abrasive. She briskly walked into the room, did not bother to introduce herself or even make eye contact, and dove straight into a technical explanation of my dog’s condition. She went far beyond my dog’s immediate condition and pressured me into hundreds of dollars of treatments to include expensive, optional vaccinations. I succumbed to some of her recommendations, but left the office feeling unwelcome and had the slight feeling of having been swindled – whether that is true or not, perception is reality. My girlfriend took the dog for a checkup two weeks later for a follow-up, the vet was satisfied with his progress, and wrote a prescription which we could fill at our leisure without seeing the vet again and paying her fee. His ear infection came back recently with the same symptoms and I returned to Hometown Vet to refill the prescription. They required me to see the vet despite her instructions to refill the prescription, and told me that the dog needed approx. $150 in vaccinations. No dog should cost $100/month in vaccinations – that is ridiculous. Since Hometown Vet pressures me into hundreds of dollars in treatments per visit and has not attempted to make me feel welcome, I will no longer use their services. For those servicemembers in the Alexandria area, I visited the Ft. Belvoir veterinary clinic and their medication costs are literally half of what Hometown Vet charges. Belvoir does not accept walk-ins and usually requires a two-week appointment window, but I will use them from now on for routine veterinary services.

Dr. Carlson truly is a fantastic vet. We just moved here with our 3 and a half year old cat, who is slightly overweight. Dr Carlson gave us a detailed diet plan for him and went as far as to call us personally with an individualized plan just for him. We brought our Akita, Delilah, to Bed and Biscuits for grooming/bath on November 6th. The young woman who took care of Delilah did an excellent job. Since Akitas have double coats, it's often difficult and time consuming to bathe this breed. When we picked Delilah up she looked gorgeous. Her coat was so fluffy and seemed a different color. My 7 year old cat needed a tooth extracted. The doctor suggested a complete dental at the same time, since the cat would be under anesthesia. I agreed, and my pet was treated. The whole process was easy, with a quick drop off in the morning, followed by a pick up in early afternoon. The post-op instructions were clear, the medication provided relieved pain, and I was encouraged to call with any concerns. The facility is clean and bright, and the staff is friendly and obviously animal lovers. The doctor was calm in her demeanor and clear with her instructions and explanation of the procedure. I will only use this vet from now on.

Although the actual vets are wonderful and the rates are not nearly as high as other vets around the District (and it is obvious they aren't aiming to rip you off), the customer service isn't so great. It often takes a ridiculous amount of time to be acknowledged by whoever is at the front desk, and then it takes another ridiculous amount of time to do something like...pay! Once the appointment is over, we might stand there and wait for another 15 minutes before we can pay and leave. In addition, we moved out of state for about a year and a half, moved back, and returned to Hometown with all vet and vaccination records. I'm not sure what they actually do with these records because we've brought them copies and had them faxed several times and they still can't get it right! If I called today asking when and if my dogs needed any vaccinations, they would tell me they need several, and they needed them 3 years ago! Get it together! We give you the papers. Utilize them. Again, we love the vets, but we also rely on them to be able to tell us when and if our dogs needs checkups, shots, etc, so that we can keep them healthy. If they cannot do that, we will have to find another vet that can!

Reasonable pricing ($70 exam fee, we are new to the area so not 100% sure) and care, SUBPAR hospitality and customer service. Staff treated our kitten well but did not allow us much time to ask questions. We felt rushed out and were not shown enough care and concern although the vet (Dr. Sholes) seemed knowledgeable and pleasant enough. They didnt share the kittens temp or weight with us, or put any observations or recommendations on the receipt, so it seems they're used to assuming pet parents aren't interested. We did not agree on waiting for 12 weeks of age ( 8 weeks at the time) to test for fiv/felv given that we have another cat in the house and it would be unreasonable to keep them separated that long even if we had to retest later, but that wasnt given as an option. The young receptionist at the front was rather rude and not very helpful (not amanda). That is the first and last person that is seen so they should try harder. All in all not very hospitable although the care seemed adequate from what was seen. Also make sure you mention any discounts mentioned on their website before they charge you, otherwise they'll charge you the full amount without batting an eye. Personally, we wont be returning here with any of our animals due to our first impression.

That said, the receptionist advised me about 10 minutes after my time slot that the doctor was running late and asked if I had other appointments that would be affected.
