I’ve never had a pup pull so hard to go inside the vet office, my pup Otis loves it here. This is my first ever puppy and Dr Kier was so helpful giving information and tips for caring for a puppy. He also explained what he was looking at while doing a physical exam on Otis in regards to weight and proportions. Otis got gum stuck in between his toes that I couldn’t get and they got it out for me. They also have great follow up and front desk service. Really glad I found a vet Otis and I like so much.

My pup is currently having some serious health concerns. After an ER visit to another facility, Dr. Keir's was excellent in putting my mind at ease as to the process to diagnosing my pup's condition. The meds are helping so far and we are still awaiting one more lab result. I feel confident Dr. Keir will get to the bottom of all this. Thank you Dr. Keir!

We recently took in a 2 year old rescue and planned to foster him until he was found a safe home but we instantly fell in love with him. Only thing was that he had seizures in the past. We didn’t know if they were because of mistreatment, malnutrition or epilepsy. We’ve had him about a week and he had a few seizures with us this morning. We called several vets without luck. We called Independence and they were so kind and had us in to see them by 2:30 today!! I was so hysterical on the phone yet staff was so kind and understanding. My husband took him in while I stayed home with our kids. We can’t say enough how much we appreciate their care and kindness. It means so much to us and the doctor took the time to answer all my husbands questions and explain everything to him. I am beyond grateful for this team that are helping us care for our baby boy. I wanted to add that it’s the next day and the doctor called us promptly with the test results and walked my husband through what each result meant. My husband said that Dr. Johnston treated our boy like he was his own and he felt the doctor cared as much about Harvey as we do! Hands down the best vet and we feel incredibly lucky to have them treating Harvey. Thank you so much to the staff and doctors.

Dr Kier and his staff are wonderful. They take time with each pet to keep them comfortable and calm during their visit. My dogs can feel the love. Dr Kier is excellent at taking time to speak to the owners and he always provides options as opposed to jumping to the most expensive option. I will continue to recommend this practice to friends.

We just moved to VB and my 20 year old cat with known kidney disease took a turn for the worst so we made the very difficult decision to have him put to sleep. I looked up online vet clinics near me and went with the highest rated, which was this place. I was not disappointed. Glad you're finally open for in-person visits! Dr. Kier is a compassionate veterinarian who really gets to know your pet and takes time to explain his findings, your pet's overall well-being and suggestions for treatment without being pushy. Also mindful of your expenses and offering alternatives and/or letting you know what can wait if cost is an issue. Glad I switched to this vet!

My husband took my dog here after he was having bad tummy issues and our regular vet was closed due to it being Saturday. He was very impressed with the staff in how nice and helpful they were. They didn't look at him as dollar signs, they just cared about making our baby boy feel better. I want to switch vets and come here regularly. Independence Vet Hosp is Wonderful . You wont find a more caring group to take care of your precious fur babies . I love the staff and Dr Johnston and Dr Kier are the best . If you need to speak to a Dr, be assured , your call will be returned . That is so important when you have a concern about your baby. Dr Kier called me at 8:30 pm one night to ensure he got back with me the same day. That means a lot when you are worried . I highly recommend this group , and I won't go any place else unless its an emergency after hours and I have no choice . These are picture of my boys !!

Hands down the best vet experience we have had. Excellent care and service, and everyone is so kind and knowledgeable. Our experience was so overwhelmingly positive, we are finally making the long overdue decision of changing our current vet. Independence was willing and able to squeeze in same day our 1 year old pup for a foot injury when no one else was able to and when our current vet provided no guidance or help and left us feeling lost. Every single staff member including Dr. Kier was so helpful, so knowledgeable, and provided us with a comprehensive but easy to understand summary of our pup’s care, next steps, and our choices. Dr Kier, Your staff’s and your personal kindness mattered more than we can convey in words. Our cat lady chose us almost 14 years ago, when she showed up in a tree in our yard. And she ruled our world. Including all of our dogs and our other cat. She was almost 14 and had never been ill, when she started sneezing about 6 weeks ago. Over a few short weeks you found a tumor and we walked through a hard but right decision for her quality of life, to say goodbye. I’ve been taking my pup here since he was 6 weeks old. They are always more than willing to help in anyway. Incredibly professional and incredibly kind. My pup who is now 9 months old was recently attacked by another dog at a training facility and I brought him here right away. I’ve been a wreck since it happened and they put me at ease. The receptionists(who are always remarkable) gave me an appointment as soon as they could. I dropped him off early in the morning and shortly after Dr.Kier called and told me he needed to have some drains put in his leg to keep down the swelling. He also called me after the procedure and told me what to do, how to manage it, what to expect and when to come back. You can tell each and every person that works here truly cares about your family member. From the receptionists, vet techs and docs are absolutely amazing. I am so grateful for each one of them. I will never take my dog anywhere else. I can’t say enough great things about this place. You guys are phenomenal. Thank you so much for taking such good care of my baby. Kyro also says thank you!!

I took my Maggie an 11 year old boxer for a visit. As a geriatric dog, she has different needs, and a few issues that she will have till she passes. My sister's coworker had taken her older pets here and was suggested to her. I found the doctor to be upfront, compassionate, and well versed, in the issues Maggie has. He thoroughly explained and answered my questions. If you need an evaluation of your older dogs health, this is the place to visit. Also, the team there are kind and very helpful.

I followed Dr. Kier from P.A. Vets because he really cares about your fur family members. I am even willing to drive from the courthouse area of Virginia Beach to north of Town Center to have him care for my pups. He has the best bed side manner, sitting on the floor at their level to perform his assessment (for the big dogs). He really listens and takes into consideration your opinion and observations. He works with you and that is truly an amazing quality!

My cat is not the easiest patient but they are always respectful with her and able to complete any tests or procedures. We are new customers to Independence Veterinary Hospital and have been very pleased. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Appointments are easy to make and they work with our schedule. We were very impressed with Dr. Johnson who has provided care for our puppy on each visit. On his last visit, only booster shots we needed so we weren’t charged for an office visit, only the vaccines. We used to go to Hilltop Vet and we always left feeling like we had been overcharged. On a Sunday, we had to bring our puppy to the emergency vet and on Monday morning Independence Veterinary Hospital called to see how our puppy was doing. We have been very happy and satisfied customers so far. I’ve recommended them to several people already.

We came for a wellness exam for our newly adopted dog and the experience and services we received here was beyond wonderful. With only having him for less than a month, we were anxious how his first visit to the vet with us would go. Nevertheless, our dog’s as well as our experience with this facility was outstanding. I hate the life changes forced on us by the pandemic, but I appreciate why they exist. I took my newly adopted pup for his first exam and some needed vaccinations to Independence Vet last week. While I wish it could have been like the "old days," where I could bring him inside, meet the doctor, and put a face to the voice, the warm, caring, friendly staff did everything they could to make our first visit as comfortable as possible. The women who escorted him inside and returned him to me with patience and gentleness. They answered all my "new mom" questions about my large, high-energy pup. With calm reassurance and professional courtesy. They communicated clearly and thoroughly, as did Dr Johnson in our post exam phone conversation. I can't begin to do justice to my appreciation and gratitude for these wonderful folks. From making the appointment to their loving treatment of my new fur baby, Independence Vet is beyond amazing! 🐾👣🥰

We’ve been bringing our 7 month old puppy here since we got him. Thanks to COVID, we’ve always had to wait in our car - I was nervous about handing our puppy to staff we’d never met, but I’ve noticed that he’s always happy to go with them, so his experience must have been good! Staff and vets seem genuinely caring, the vet always takes plenty of time to answer any questions, and the pricing seems about average in our experience. We feel our dog is in good hands here.

I got my long haired dachshunds groomed here, and Kelly really listened to what I asked her to do. She was so sweet to my boys too, so I felt comfortable leaving them. My dog Lily was scheduled for dental surgery however she could not go under anesthesia at that time due to her anxiety & very heavy panting as she has Cushings Disease. The Dr was still able to pull the damaged teeth (the old fashion way) and Lily is doing much better. The only constructive comment i can give is that her anti-biotic medicine/dosage was not explained to me but other than that i am truly grateful for the service they provided. Thank-you!

Dr.Kier has seen my dogs now for two years and has always responded very logically to problems, but gives the same passion as if they were his own dogs. I have never felt like I’m being talked into doing something not necessarily needed for my dogs that is going to cost me an arm and a leg. I've been here three times since the Pandemic and it's really sad to not be able to go in with your pet at the vet. This office doesn't allow you to come inside. I don't even know what the vet looks like, but they have taken great care of my two pets.

Independence Veterinary Hospital recently neutered my dog. They explained every step, scheduled appointments that fit my work schedule, and took very good care of Bentley. They even sent me a picture once he was out of surgery. He did very well and they contacted me 3 days after to make sure he was healing well. They care so much about my dog. They have been with me through other dogs I have had in my lifetime and always treated them as if they were their own pets. I recommend them to everyone. They are like family to me.

Dr. Kier is the absolute best vet there is. He’s taken care of all my animals since I was 5 and I’m so happy he found a great practice. Everyone at Independence Vet is wonderful, very informative and helpful. The prices are reasonable and I don’t feel “pushed” into treatment (but honestly, I would do whatever Dr. Kier would recommend). I haven’t met the other vets yet due to COVID, but Dr Johnston spayed our puppy in June and we had no issues. Overall a great office!

We have two Catahoula Leopard Dogs, which have serious anxiety when it comes to vet visits. Over the span of two years we have been through 4 veterinary offices. It has always been a stressful and combative experience. I have to say this have been the absolute best experience we have ever had with our babies! The staff are pleasant and know how to handle anxious dogs very well. Dr. Hastings was also very personable and informative. It is plain to see the whole group loves what they do and we feel fortunate to have found this office!

This place is eager to find out what is going on with my dog it's hard to fix something that ain't broke so they're starting from ABC and you got to start somewhere but I think this place is the one that could figure it out it's a great place easy access you pull in easy parking the doctor seem like they care and call you and talk to you on the phone to find out every little bits and pieces about what's going on with your animal I would give it a five-star Plus.

We were SO excited to find Dr. Kier again and have our boys treated by the team at Independence Veterinary Hospital. We were fortunate to meet Dr. Kier several years ago through a different practice and have appreciated his knowledge, patience, and kindness over the years. One of my dogs is very anxious in new spaces/around new people and Dr. Kier sat down on the floor to sit with him until he warmed up a bit. Also, I would spend any amount for my boys to have the best care, but Independence Veterinary Hospital is very reasonable and doesn't suggest unnecessary treatments or procedures just to make $$. We look forward to continuing to take our dogs to a vet who doesn't treat us like we're stupid, and doesn't treat our dogs like experiments.

Doctors and techs are super friendly. Very thorough in answering questions or concerns. Always accommodating with appointment times. Can purchase prescriptions there, prices are very competitive and love the fact that you can purchase heartworm medicine monthly instead of forking over a large amount at once. Times are tough and they make it easy to provide affordable health care for your pets. Would give 6 stars just for the fact that they don't treat my American pitbull terrier any differently than any other breed that comes through the door.

I called this place first because it's around the corner from where I live, and also I grew up in the area and this veterinary hospital has been here ever since I can remember. The receptionist was friendly and knowledgeable (I wish I could remember her name), so I went ahead and made an appointment. Being a first time dog owner, I was nervous. We have been using Dr. Derrick Keir to vet our dogs for over 20 years at Princess Anne Vet. Hospital and was sad to see him go. Then, we found him again when he and his wife bought INDEPENDENCE VET HOSPITAL. We immediately took our GP/St.B to him only to find out she had bone cancer. We were devastated. Dr. Kier and his staff were so kind, informative, open to our questions and worries. Needless to say, we lost Lucy in Oct. after 3 months of wonderful care. Dr. Kier was with us as we helped Lucy cross the Rainbow Bridge. This makes 3 that have crossed over with Dr. Kiers help. He and his staff are the absolute best and we would not go anywhere else!!! The veterinarians diagnosed and treated each one and they are both getting back to normal health. Despite not being able to go in with my pets the staff was caring and treated my pets like their own. They communicate very well with you from the time you check in until you check out keeping you informed on what to expect next. Each one that helped me made sure my questions were answered. As i was waiting in my vehicle i didn't turn my ignition all the way off and my battery died. The staff quickly came to my rescue and jumped me off and i was on my way. What great service I received here! I highly recommend IVH.

Finally, a veterinary office I am pleased with. Even though I didn't officially meet the vet (because of COVID-19) they were the most helpful than the other vet offices I have been with. First, they got me in next day appointment ( others I called were about 1-2 weeks out) Every person I spoke with on the phone and dealt with was very friendly and helpful. Also the first vet who was actually ok with me doing raw food diet and didn't try to convince me to get my dog fixed. Bonus is that they are only a could y miles from my house. Upon catching a well known local Vet price gouge me after using them for decades (and they messed up my dog’s records) I had to find a new practice. My 15yr old dog developed a tumor on her thigh. Dr. Johnston removed the lump in January 2020: it was cancer. A year later, she’s still doing well. Dr. Johnston was wonderful. In May 2020, my 7yr old cat also developed a lump on her metatarsal region of her foot. Dr. Johnston removed the lump, to find it too was a cancer! She did great, until October, when the mass returned. Tests were run, Blue Pearl’s oncologist was consulted, and the decision was made to let Dr. Kier try a second surgery, taking larger margins, in hopes of saving the foot. If the cancer returns, we will need to amputate. So on 22 Dec 2020, Dr. Kier operated on the foot. It’s been a slow recovery, with many trips back to IVH. The staff has been friendly, courteous, and professional. And Dr. Kier is very informative and takes his time to explain everything and address all questions. Keeping in mind my cat was originally a feral I trapped and tamed as a kitten, she’s afraid of strangers, but never seems fearful of the IVH staff. They always tell me how sweet she is. That says a lot. If the cancer returns, I will trust Dr. Kier to take the leg. It’s obvious he cares deeply for his patients and their owners.

I came here for Dr. Kier and he is the BEST!!! My only issue is with staff member the receptionist Christine. There was a mix up in the communication between Amanda and I and was late picking up my baby. I'm always on time and have spent quite a bite of money here, but I was treated disrespectfully and basically call a liar ! I can totally understand her being upset bc I was late but being called a liar is a big no no in my book. I didn't receive an apology from her, but did receive one from the office manager. Very disappointed 😞. All of Dr. Kiers crew are awesome in my book. This needs to corrected.

Their facility is in a convenient location and is always very clean. Their appointment hours differ from most vets in that they are open after typical business day hours and on Saturdays. They always follow up with a friendly phone call to check on your pet and are great about appointment reminder calls. As someone who is new to the area, I would highly recommend them and their rates are very reasonable. Plus the first exam visit is free if you are new client!

During a check-up at Independence Veterinary Hospital, my husband and I were informed that our cat needed some dental work done. The vet explained what the situation was and made sure that we understood everything. We made an appointment for him to have the dental work done, and the vet gave us clear instructions on how to prep our cat for the procedure and what to do afterwords. After bringing him in on the day of the appointment, the vet called me a few times during the procedure to let me know how everything was going. After the procedure was over, I picked him up and the vet said that he did great. I was given some medicine for him to take at home for the post-procedure pain and the vet said to call if we had any questions. My cat is doing well and we will absolutely continue to take him to Independence Veterinary Hospital.
