Reviews of One Tail at a Time - Adoption Center
Isabella Brock
One Tail At A Time is one of the greatest animal organizations in the Chicago area, hands down. I recently started fostering with them and have felt very supported through the entire process! They provide assistance with supplies, transportation, and most importantly have an incredible group of pets. My foster dog Quincy came from a high risk shelter in Indiana and is the sweetest boy in the world, I am so grateful to this organization for allowing him to have a second chance at life! The work this organization does is truly amazing I would recommend adoption/fostering/volunteering here to anyone!

I’ve been volunteering with One Tail for over three years and I’ve loved that experience. Last year, I started fostering rabbits with them and I’ve learned so much. When I first asked about fostering rabbits, they sent me a ton of good info on house rabbits that really helped me feel more confident about having a new species in my house. I’m now in foster rabbit number 7 and I’ve fallen in love with bunnies and getting to see them blossom while in a foster home and get adopted.

Fostering through One Tail at a Time was one of the best experiences! They are wonderful, highly responsive and so great with everything! This was my first time fostering and I could not be more happy with my experience thanks to them. They are so supportive and provide everything. Highly recommend and keep up the great work!

We could not be happier with our experience at One Tail at a Time! The staff was extremely helpful and thorough in finding us the perfect fit for our home. Took us a few visits but Charlene has been such an amazing addition to our family. Would highly recommend One Tail at a Time if looking to adopt a dog, cat or bunny!

My husband and I adopted our first dog from here at the beginning of the year! We could tell they really take care of the animals and are passionate about their future! They supported us through every step and gave us plenty of resources to make the transition as smooth as possible for our girl! The foster parents we worked with were incredible also!
Update: We loved this place so much we adopted a second and are even more in love with them! Wonderful process, very open with us about the dogs behavior(for both), and helped us transition smoothly integrating 2 dogs together! They are now best friends ❤️ so thankful for One Tail At A Time bringing our little family together 😁🥰

I’ve been a volunteer at One Tail at a Time for a year and have had the privilege of caring for many dogs while they find their forever home. Everyone who works or volunteers for One Tail at a Time is committed, passionate and devoted to the dogs! I’m in awe of the work they do! Here are just a few pictures of the hundred dogs I’ve met and loved.

Having fostered through one tail at a time was a wonderful experience. Like any rescue organization things can get hectic for everyone but what sets otat apart is that they have a fabulous support system in place to help remedy any issues that come up. Patience is key to remember it takes time but so worth it. I also adopted my foster and it was a seamless experience. Highly recommend

We have fostered many times with One Tail at a Time and they are so helpful with the process even when fostering animals we had zero experience with (bunnies)! And when a foster didn’t work out for our family, they were extremely quick to help find new placement. We foster failed our most recent foster, Dot, and adopted her. My family is so grateful to OTAT for helping our family grow and for saving COUNTLESS lives.

A new foster parent here and OTAT has been so supportive and amazing! They provide everything you need to foster, respond quickly to questions, and even offer the opportunity to meet pups before you sign on to foster them. I would recommend to anyone who is on the fence- do it!
Nidia Acosta
I have fostered with OTAT and they are always very helpful with everything. They provide resources and give you all the supplies you need. You can tell they truly care about all the animals and the humans that volunteer for them.

I had the most supportive, fulfilling time fostering a sweet pup with one tail at a time. I truly can’t recommend working with them enough and now tell all of my friends and family in the area to check them out if they’re interested in adoption. This is mostly because of the support for positive reinforcement training given by their staff. A One Tail at a Time animal is a happy animal.

We had a really great experience adopting from One Tail! They were very prompt in all communication, and gave us really good information on what to expect from the dog that we were adopting/ next steps we should take with him. Thanks for bringing Splinter into our home!

My partner and I have fostered a couple times with OTAT. The community is wonderful and the coordinators are so knowledgeable, responsive, and helpful. It was a great experience getting to work with these pups and find them loving forever homes.

I've been fostering with One Tail for over two years and have had 7ish foster pups in that time. Each dog brings with them different personalities and challenges. The support provided by OTAT and the larger foster community is top notch. Fostering isn't easy as you never quite know what you are walking into but it has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. Here are a few pics of dogs I've fostered. :)

There are not enough stars for all the amazing things One Tail at a Time does for the dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs of Chicago! They do amazing things for the community as well. Not only have I adopted one One Tail dog, but two! I have also opened my home to foster with One Tail at a Time. Their foster program is so supportive and well managed. 10 Stars!

By far the most amazing organization I’ve encountered. They helped me find my best friend (pictured here) and were so understanding and patient with helping me find the right match and answering my questions throughout the adoption process. After adoption, OTAT opened me up to an incredibly supportive rescue community that is always there to give advice and give back to the populations they serve. Truly cannot say enough great things about the work these people do and the lives they change forever.

OTAT is the best organization. They give SO much support to foster homes and help save so many lives - all animal lives a worthy to be saved in their eyes. I was a first time foster and was amazed with all of the support. They provide food, crate, leash, collar and harness! You shouldn’t have to make any purchases yourself to be a loving foster home. Plus so many training tips and guides. PLUS, a dedicated foster coordinator and other support contacts to reach out to with questions. My experience with OTAT has been extremely positive I’m so many ways. I ended up adopting my first foster because I fell in love immediately!
Elizabeth H. Smith
One Tail at a Time is an amazing organization - they’re always looking for different ways to help more animals, and also are always doing what they can to help the community & the humans who love those animals. OTAT is constantly growing & reinventing itself. They’ve evolved so much in a short time - I can’t wait to see what another 14 years may bring!
Lauren P
I love fostering because of One Tail at a Time. The animals come first but they care about the humans too (fosters, adopters and staff). Fosters are supported and can feel confident they have a team to set up their critters for success. It is also a fantastic community to be part of. Plus- if you love kittens, fostering is the best library card you could possibly have
Jenny Kotz
My family has worked with one tail at a time for about two years now. Three fosters and two dogs. Great organization, good communication, easy to reach. They are the folks we recommend to everyone who is looking to adopt or just help a furry fellow out.
Kiersten Smith
Perhaps the best animal rescue group and community in Chicago. The amount of support and guidance their crew provides not only throughout the adoption process but even after, is seriously wonderful. They helped me find the literal love of my life during the pandemic and I’m forever grateful.
Pat Saiger
Fostering with OTAT has been one of my greatest joys. The community support, the overwhelming desire to give each and every animal their best chance at the life they deserve is present in each and every person involved. I am so very grateful to be a small part of this incredible organization.

We can't thank OTAT enough for bringing our Bambi (fka Delta) girl to us. I'd also like to commend their transparency. I had signed up to foster and reached out to pick up a pup for a Sunday sleepover. Upon meeting volunteers at the adoption center, I mentioned having a toddler at home. Erica realized that the pup I had originally intended on fostering may not be a good fit. The foster coordinator contacted Erica right away and we decided that it wouldn't work out. I was sad and really wanted to bring home a pup. Another volunteer mentioned that maybe Delta would be a good fit for us. In under 24 hours, we realized this was our forever girl. I am so grateful for their honesty and transparency. Once our girl is declared officially HW free and has some more training under her belt, I can't wait to welcome other OTAT fosters into our home.
Their resources, even after adoption, are extensive and there is an amazing community of people willing to help out any time.
J. P.
Love this organization!! They do amazing work and are an absolute asset to this community. We adopted a dog from them and the process was so easy and seamless. Highly recommend!!
Brielle Keane
One Tail at a Time is an amazing rescue that dedicated time, resources and even offers training support for your adopted dog. We fostered and adopted our dog Bluebell from here and the community has been an amazing resource throughout our journey. I can’t recommend OTAT enough!!!
Kari Nelson
I volunteer and foster with OTAT and it’s my favorite rescue that I’ve worked with. The staff treats both the animals and people involved with kindness and empathy, and One Tail animals are given the best care.
Jessi Taylor
This organization is amazing! They do amazing work and they really do their best to accommodate and find the best match. My family and I foster failed to the most perfect senior dog, Bailey, in 2020- she still makes our lives better daily. We just recently adopted a cat, Mordecai, and he was the perfect cat for our family. He wasn’t our first pick, but the foster coordinator listened to the personality we wanted and matched us perfectly. Rescue work is expensive and difficult, not everyone can do-It’s wonderful when you discover an organization that goes above and beyond with the animals and adopters/fosters in mind.
Maria Ranahan
I’ve fostered many dogs with OTAT. It’s a wonderful org to volunteer with, they do so much for Chicago’s pets. They care about the humans as much as the animals. They’re responsive, kind, and on top of things! A well oiled machine.
Jenny Puzio
I have volunteered and fostered with OTAT and I truly believe they're among the best rescues. They have so many resources with information that helps you learn about the animals you're taking care of. With their help and frequent communication, I've now fostered two cats when I previously had never taken care of cats before. They provide all the supplies fosters need, so someone like me who doesn't have money to spare can still help out. And you can still foster if you don't have a car! So vital in the city.
Rebecca Kaplan
I have fostered, volunteered, and adopted with One Tail and have truly enjoyed my experience. I have found a great community through fostering One Tail dogs, made numerous connections and friends, and now have the cutest puppy. The staff have always been helpful and supportive, and I appreciate their flexibility and genuine care. I look forward to continuing to be involved!
Kim Pulmano
Foster turned adopter over here. I have enjoyed welcoming all the foster dogs into my home and working with this organization. Very clear guidance and instructions for fosters and even through the adoption process when I chose to keep one of the dogs. I’ve recommended on numerous occasions to friends and family to consider OTAT when looking to adopt dogs and plan to continue to do so in the future.

I first found out about One Tail at a Time when I adopted a dog from them, Link, about 10 years ago. They were so amazing that I started volunteering from them and then adopted a second dog, Husker. I have now been a monthly donor for many, many years, and while I no longer live in Chicago, I still follow them so closely and am so proud to be a supporter. They are an incredible, intersectional dog rescue who is transparent about their work, has many programs to help dogs AND their families, and they do daring, progressive work to help vulnerable populations, now including cats and rabbits, and even the occasional guinea pig. In my book, they are the gold standard of dog rescues. Please, please adopt or foster or volunteer or donate to them. They're amazing and a super cool bunch of folks, too.

Excellent organization. Completely transparent with the adoption process and the dogs I was interested in from the beginning. I found a dog online that was in the shelter, showed up, they asked who I might be interested in, took us in the backyard to meet and hang out with the pup, and allowed us to take him for a walk. We ended up coming home with my new best friend(:. The whole process took maybe an hour from start to finish. Forever grateful for this organization, and will be doing what I can to support!!!!!

I went with a friend who is looking for a dog to adopt, and even though I'm not the one looking, I feel compelled to write a review because it was SUCH a good experience! I have adopted three dogs in my life and never had such thorough and thoughtful information sharing and such ample opportunity to interact with, walk, and play with a potential new dog.
The shelter is in a home, which makes the visit waaaay less stressful than your typical shelter visit. You choose which dog you'd like to visit with from their website and they bring the dog to the living room area for you to meet. All of their dogs are fostered before being listed for adoption, so there are incredibly detailed notes about all of them. They gave us treats to give to the puppy, let us take him for a walk, and spend lots of time playing in their yard with him.
The two ladies working went above and beyond with their knowledge of the dog, and also just sharing training and lifestyle advice for my friend who hasn't owned a dog as an adult. They were extremely honest, it was entirely low pressure, and you can tell they have a vested interested in making good matches between dogs and owners.
I will absolutely come back here when it's my turn to adopt a dog again!

OTAT makes it incredibly easy to volunteer, foster or adopt dogs, cats, and small animals. There is an amazing community of staff and volunteers. Not sure if you’re ready for a pet or which kind? Foster! All fosters get first dibs of the SUPER eclectic group of animals, especially dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes and it’s totally free. They are supported until adoption and there are a lot of options for short term (Sunday sleep overs, temporary fosters, or even just a soft landing for quick turn dogs just about ready for adoption (2-3 wks).

I got my babies from this shelter. The staff is great. Very helpful and nice. My only complaint is that they don’t have a phone number. You guys are a shelter and also have a veterinary center without a number? Make it make sense. Any information you need about your animals or if you have an urgent question, will be addressed via email. I think it’s really cool that they have a veterinary center. That’s extremely helpful for the clients who have adopted from OTAT but it’s not easily accessible without a phone number. They are also closed Monday/Tuesday so if you send a email over the weekend don’t hold your breath for a response.

Talk about a WONDERFUL organization. I have been fostering with OTAT for 6 months now and they make it so easy. How you might ask?
1. I don't have a car and it's not a problem. There is a network of folks with cars who help get you a pup, supplies and to vet appointments.
2. BTW, vet appointments are really easy to book - they have a google scheduler and everything
3. They have ALL the supplies you could need - I have not had to purchase a single thing
4. The dogs are amazing: yes they have their quirks, but who doesn't.
5. There's lots of ways to partake: you can do a weekend / short foster, a longer foster (2+ weeks), a real long foster (4+ weeks), adopt, volunteer, drive - THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS
6. The team is there for you - I will admit it took a minute to get used to having many staff rotate though "weekends" of Sun / Mon / Tues - but once you know that communication is a breeze. Foster coordinators get back to you in 24 hours, the facebook group is so supportive and the driving network tends to respond in half a day!

I filled out an application for a dog that was going to be in an adoption event the next day. OTAT was extremely quick to approve my application to assure I could attend the event in an effort to adopt this specific dog. The adoption event was based on a first come first serve basis (so if you are attending one, I suggest coming early to ensure you have early opportunity), and the event ran very smoothly. I took my pup home that day. Highly recommend!

The most amazing animal rescue I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. The incredibly hard working staff; the unending dedication to saving the lives of animals in need; the community they foster; the pet mutual aid program - everything OTAT does makes the world a better place. I am so lucky to have my dogs from OTAT and all of the fosters we've had as well. These folks just care.
Kyra Dahl
Absolutely love OTAT! We adopted our pup 3 years ago today and can’t imagine what life was like before her. OTAT made the adoption process incredibly easy and made sure we were the right fit for each other. I also love how welcoming the OTAT community is post-adoption, always offering support and advice for adopters and their pets. I can’t wait until we can adopt another pup - definitely will be going through OTAT again.
Margaux Joelson
Foster, adopter, volunteer. I became more involved with OTAT because of how wonderful they are. Their work is not easy, but they still put their best foot forward in helping community members and incoming rescue animals feel at home. I am constantly floored by the initiative, resourcefulness, and organization the OTAT team has built as they have continued to expand. I am an OTAT household, and it's a symbol of pride.

I am constantly impressed by One Tail at a Times commitment to their mission and community - pulling dogs from both local and southern rescue partners, a commitment to positive reinforcement, transparency in their practices, pet mutual aid efforts and food drives they are an unstoppable organization. After adopting 2 years ago, I've spent a tiny amount of time volunteering and have seen their efforts at work.
nora Fitzpatrick
OTAT continues to amaze me on what they are able to do with animals and those needing good homes. They work tirelessly with all aspects of the Chicago/Chicagoland area to ensure that people can keep their pets and those who want pets, have their new family members.
Ashley Duda
Fostered many dogs with OTAT. the BEST org ever - so helpful, such a great community. Ended up adopting my 4th foster from them ❤️
Caitlin Glassey
One Tail at a Time truly changes lives! Like many others during the pandemic, we decided to foster a dog. The application process was easy and I received a phone call interview and was approved within a week. The staff walk you through every detail of what to expect and prepare you ahead of time for particular behaviors in dogs. We were very eager to foster, but OTAT does their absolute best to make sure that each dog is a match for your household, rather than just placing dogs to the first person to volunteer.
Our first foster dog, Zoom, has been the best thing to happen to us! OTAT took a real chance on her and saved her life. We could not be more thankful and highly recommend this amazing organization and it’s staff to anyone looking to foster or adopt!
Katie Vasquez
I had an excellent time fostering a dog with this organization! They provided all the supplies and answered all our questions about taking care of a dog for the first time. They also introduced us to a community of people who foster animals who could answer less serious questions. I look forward to fostering with OTAT again!
Update: I adopted a dog with OTAT and she is amazing! OTAT provided us with tons of resources, including veterinary recommendations, a month of preventatives, and a huge community full of other experienced adopters.
Katherine Cronrath
I’ve been volunteering and fostering with OTAT for a year now and it has been the most rewarding experience. It’a been amazing to see how much the team cares about animals and the community they’ve created. They want to save all the dogs, regardless of breed, size, age, or medical condition.
Williesheia J
Love this place, I rescued two pups from here and both times were pleasant experiences. I’m hoping to get a third once we meet the best fit. 10/10 recommend.
Hilary Orler
Thank you to One Tail at a Time for giving me my best furry friend, introducing me to a plethora of amazing humans and having such a welcoming community. I have volunteered, adopted and fostered through OTAT. They provide all supplies needed and try to do as much due diligence as possible on both the dogs and potential fosters/adopters because matching people with the right dog (not any dog) is so important for success.
Lorenis Rosario
I had an awesome experience fostering with One Tail At a Time. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a pup so decided to foster and I got lucky with my girl Razzle. It’s amazing to see the transformation on a nervous dog when you give them love. It’s an experience I recommend for everyone! After she went off to her forever home I decided I was ready to get a dog and am so thankful to the staff and foster community for helping me out finding my precious boy Renzo. I’m forever thankful and in awe of the work and enthusiasm that OTAT gives to their pups and people. They truly care about matching dogs with the right owners/fosters to meet the dog’s needs.
Thanks so much for giving me my best friend. We’re family now💕🐾

I've been fostering with One Tail for nearly a year -- my experience has been so positive, that I've started volunteering too. They have an unbelievably strong commitment to saving animals and finding them the best home possible. The staff is very supportive when you have questions/concerns and really take the time to listen and answer questions that come up. One Tail has also built a fantastic network of other fosters & volunteers for help when something isn't medical/life threatening.
Margaret Wolfson
I fostered with OTAT twice, and each time was a wonderful experience. They were so supportive and encouraging. I always got a response to my emails within less than 24 hours. Also, since I didn't have a car, they were always more than happy to coordinate car rides to both deliver the dog and pick up the dog for vet appointments and adoptions. They also dropped off food and supplies on a weekly basis. They are a wonderful organization to introduce you to fostering, and I cannot recommend them enough!
Brooke
I can't imagine a more supportive fostering experience! OTAT provides online training, handy guides for a range of issues, and extremely knowledgable, understanding, and responsive coordinators. I ended up with a dog who wasn't quite the right fit for our resident dog, but the coordinator provided amazing advice and helped me get him into another environment that was better suited to him. I look forward to being able to foster again and am so impressed by the community they've built and the compassionate, helpful staff members there.
Michelle Zahuranec
Such a great organization! I’ve been a foster with One Tail for years and can’t say enough about how much I love this group. Supportive, responsive, helpful, and so much compassion for both the animals and the people involved.
I never feel alone in this process, they truly back you up with an army of support. You are assigned a “coordinator” from One Tail to handle any day to day issues or questions that may come up. They also have a 24hour emergency number for emergency situations as well as a large group of volunteer mentors that can answer general questions for you while fostering. When I was unable to drive to get my foster dogs food, the volunteers in the One Tail transport group arranged for someone to pick up my foster’s food for me. So supportive!
They really go above and beyond to be supportive and make fostering a positive experience.
Highly recommend if you are looking to foster a dog, cat, or bunny, are looking to volunteer but can’t bring an animal home, or if you want to adopt.
Maria Fernanda Garcia
OTAT is the most amazing shelter I have ever adopted from! When my husband and i first considered adopting a pet, we went to some local shelters around our area and none were as quick to respond and help us out as OTAT was! We went to one of their adoption events and found our sweet baby Stella. The adoption process was quick and seamless! I can also say that the fosters they have caring for these animals really do put all their time and effort into making them comfortable, loved and ready to go to their forever home! Same goes for all the coordinators and volunteers!
Elizabeth Keuler
I cannot speak more highly of OTAT! I didn’t grow up with animals but have always wanted to adopt a dog. The support right off the bat was amazing. I was asked what I hoped for in a dog and got help finding a foster that might be a good fit. When I was interested in adopting another Foster’s pup, they helped me transition my own foster so I could give it a shot!
I eventually foster failed the sweetest pup. But after two months of trying to make it work, he just scared my partner’s pup too much (at 5 months he was already double the size). There was no judgment. Just love, support, and understanding throughout the difficult transition.
You will not find a better organization or community to work with.
Mary-Helen Pitman
I have had the best introductory experience fostering with OTAT! They truly are there to hold your hand through any problem that may arise with the animal and give you all the supplies you could possibly need. I even just recently adopted one of my fosters and have felt so supported through every step of the process! So grateful for such an amazing rescue.
Courtney Blackwell
I’ve fostered for several organizations on and off for the past 8 years and these past two years as an OTAT foster have been the best fostering experience I’ve ever had. The staff and community of volunteers is incredible and always willing to help, whether it’s answering my overprotective foster mom questions or transporting supplies or just being there for emotional support. I’ll never forget my very first OTAT foster experience where, a couple hours after we got our foster we realized she needed some meds, and within 30 minutes a volunteer shows up outside our door to deliver them. This group of humans and animals is truly unreal and I am so thankful I found them!
Jessica Jones
Truly the BEST rescue organization you can find. When I adopted from OTAT in 2019 I found more than just my beloved pet, I found a community with an amazing mission. Fast forward to 2021 when I started fostering with OTAT and I’m blown away! If your considering fostering this is the place to do it! So much support, training honestly everything you need to be successful! And hands down the cutest animals too!
Katelyn
My partner and I recently adopted bunnies at OTAT! Hana was so friendly and sent us a lot of information about bunnies! She was very helpful throughout the process of adoption. I would definitely recommend adopting any pet from OTAT.
Michelle Blam
OTAT is one of a kind - such a great place to adopt a pet from or foster. The coordinators are super communicative and helpful! I “foster-failed” with my sweet girl Kitty the minute I got her home as my first foster. Couldn’t imagine my life without her! Thanks One Tail!
Carly Bartman
We adopted our Avery here after a solid month of trying to find a dog that would thrive in our household. OTAT helped us meet the perfect pup and continue to support her heartworm treatment even though she's not in their care anymore. It is a wonderful organization full of people who care about the dogs they're helping, and it shows.
Melissa Lorenz
If there were 10 stars for OTAT, I would score them as a perfect 10! I am a volunteer, I've fostered, and I adopted through OTAT. My little guy "Cruz" is a fantastic dog and we love him so much! So grateful for OTAT for bringing us together. In all my years I have never seen a rescue (and they ALL have hearts of gold) that is so caring, socially responsible, and number one, puts the needs of the animals they serve first. I am extremely proud to be associated with OTAT and continue to volunteer and support. Cannot say enough good things about them!
Kevin Rey
There isn't an unkind word to say for One Tail. We adopted our amazing, loving pit here. They have kept in touch, helped out with any issues we had with her health and socialization, and held some amazing events. Everything they do is with love, and I couldn't recommend d them more.
Kathy
My partner and I have been working with the shelter to find a dog that would be a good match for our current dog (he's very selective), and I deeply appreciate their patience and willingness to work with us. They spent a lot of time answering our questions and they are genuinely invested in helping animals AND people. I highly recommend them and plan to adopt/foster with them in the future. I've spoken with other shelters in the area and even adopted our current little guy from a different one, and by far, OTAT made us feel the most welcome and confident that the animals are very well cared for.
Carolyn Conner
As an adopter, volunteer, and pet foster for 3 years I give 5 stars. Staff is knowledgeable and welcoming and seeks to make animal rescue more inclusive and keep pets in loving homes.
Nina Marshall
We adopted our beloved pup from OTAT! Easy, seamless adoption process with tons of support from a great community.
Kate Thomas
We have adopted three dogs with One Tail at a Time over many years. They are a top-notch organization to work with. A truly dedicated group of professional staff and really well-trained, thoughtful volunteers. They work really hard to make sure that their adopters have all the help, information, and support they need to make the transition as seamless as possible. Staff is always there to answer questions, no matter how long ago you adopted. I cannot say enough about them. If you're looking to adopt a pet, they're just wonderful to work with.
Jessie Reeves
One Tail at a Time consistently goes above and beyond expectations. Of all the organizations I've volunteered with or looked into adopting a dog from, their process is the most transparent with the kindest, most attentive staff, even during their busiest times. Finding the right dog (whether you're fostering or adopting) can be difficult and they are always so patient and do their absolute best to match the right families together and give you all the support you need. We started looking for a dog a couple of years ago and decided we weren't quite ready to commit, so I began spending some time there as a volunteer and a foster to get my dog fix. It has brought me so much joy and I'm so thankful for the work they do for animals in need. I can't say enough good things about my experiences with OTAT and they are always the first place I'd recommend to anyone looking to volunteer, foster, or adopt!
Scott Vargo
One Tail at a Time is the one pet rescue to rule them all! My wife and I have volunteered with them on various projects for the last few years and finally decided to foster last year after we lost two pups within a few months of each other. Fostering was the best decision we ever made, even though our first experience was a 'failure' in which we adopted the best dog ever. They were incredibly helpful through every step of the foster and adoption process and we gained a new family member! We can't recommend them enough!
Brendan Gilloffo
I've fostered 6 dogs for OTAT now and have had multiple family member/ friends adopt from them and have had nothing but great experiences. They are super helpful and readily available for any support or needs I've had while fostering. They make it super easy to take in a dog that is the right fit for you house/apt and schedule. Can't wait to take in another pup!
Ella Pestine
One Tail is the best! I fostered through them and of course became a foster fail. The staff were so helpful throughout the entire fostering and adoption process, and they created a strong community of adopters to share their experiences, struggles, and happiness. They work diligently to ensure all potential adopters are a good match when choosing a pup.

OTAT is AMAZING! From the beginning of our search for our pup to the day we adopted her they were patient and understanding of what we were looking for in a dog. They took the time to explain why some dogs weren’t a fit and why other might be better. I’m so glad they were so thorough because I know they have the animal’s best interest in mind. We will absolutely adopt from One Tail again, and continue to support them any way we can.

OTAT is simply the best organization for fostering and adopting a dog in Chicago. We would never have met our lovely Herman if it weren't for OTAT. They are very supportive and will help you along in many ways with the fostering and adoption process! 5/5 would adopt many more Hermans!

I’ve been volunteering with OTAT for two years and fostered and then adopted my best friend through them last summer. The staff are passionate, caring and love these dogs fiercely. When I fostered my dog I had SO MANY questions. My foster coordinator, Amber, always got back to me promptly and held my hand through all my nervous “first foster mom” energy. I felt supported through the entire foster process and finalizing the adoption was seemless!
I love this place, I love the community they’ve built and the communities they help support.

Excellent animal rescue in Chicago! I started volunteering years ago and realized what a great community I was getting involved with. Then I started fostering and eventually adopted and the support for both was unreal. I’m so thankful OTAT gave me my best friend. And not only do they help save dogs but they also help make the Chicago community a better place.

One Tail at a Time is truly a special place, with special people that care immensely about the dogs and volunteers they encounter on a day to day basis. The staff is kind, understanding, and really moving mountains right now to keep their operation up and running during quarantine (in a way that limits exposure and keeps everyone involved as safe as possible). The numbers from the past few months are astounding, and the tireless and selfless hard work of every single member of the OTAT team is boundlessly impressive. They are able to give dogs from both our surrounding Chicago shelters, and dogs from southern shelters with high euthanasia rates, the lives they really deserve. I feel so blessed to be a part of their volunteer and foster community, and am forever grateful for my foster turned forever dog, my Alabama gentleman, Max.

We adopted our dog from One Tail in May 2018! We did adopt a dog that had previous reaction issues due to him being found in a hoarding situation. The adoption process was very easy and One Tail has been a continued partner with us, whether that be simple questions or going through previous history about our pet! Overall LOVE them!! I always recommend when my friends and family are looking for a new pet!

The best place to foster in the city, hands down. I fostered with a different org before OTAT, and didn't have many resources available to me. Coming to OTAT was like the cleanest breath of fresh air. They are organized, community-minded, available for support literally whenever, and incredibly kind and understanding no matter the situation. Even if staff members have days off — which they deserve! — you have one-sheets, facebook groups full of experts, and a foster mentor email/emergency line available to you in case it's needed. And, you get to meet some of the sweetest animals in the world. It's been more than rewarding being a part of this organization.
Courtney Rolland
We had the opportunity to foster through OTAT and honestly we were pretty nervous about it going into the experience. We had never fostered a dog before, but had a good amount of experience growing up with lots of dogs. It's so apparent how much the staff and volunteers of OTAT truly care about their animals and the community of Chicago, and finding the best fit for each of the animals in their care. Our foster coordinator and volunteer contacts provided for our foster dog were available to answer our questions at any hour, dropped off supplies to us so that we didn't have to venture to the store during the COVID season, and were so genuine though it all.
I would recommend volunteering, fostering, adopting through them any day! Plus their pups are really cute, check them out :)
Marjorie Kersten
I've been involved with OTAT as a foster and recent adopter for about 6 months now and have loved the experience so far. The best part for me is OTAT's commitment to supporting fosters and adopters with dogs that might have behavior challenges which otherwise might result in them being euthanized or living their whole life in a shelter. My first foster had a slow healing injury and was a rowdy boy, but I always felt like OTAT staff went out of their way to support me. Most recently they give me the opportunity to foster a dog that is now mine forever. I would highly recommend volunteering or adopting from OTAT!
Quena Menefee
I love One Tail at a Time. They are incredibly dedicated and caring, and they have built an amazing and supportive community. Adopting Charlie was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Highly recommend!
Jacqueline Burke
OTAT is legit the best! After fostering for them twice, we fell in love with our pup and adopted. They are super supportive during the foster process. They are there to help if you have any questions about the pup you are caring for. We have fostered with another rescue and not had the most supportive experience. At OTAT, everyone is SO nice and friendly! Since we do not have a car, other volunteers help to transport our foster pups to the vet, brought us supplies, etc. It is a real community! They truly care about the animals and they want to provide the best situation for both the animal and the people! LOVE THEM!

I've been fostering for and volunteering with One Tail At A Time for years, in addition to adopting a dog from them, and they have been a consistently positive and supportive in all ways, every step of the way. OTAT is a great organization that cares about people as much as pets and is unwaveringly compassionate. They have built-in support systems for their fosters and volunteers as well as the animals in their care, and the overall vibe is one of warmth and inclusion. Being a part of OTAT's community has been extremely rewarding!
Lauren Chipchak
My husband and I were very lucky to adopt our dog from One Tail during the pandemic when dog adoption was at a premium. OTAT really made an effort to find us a good match and have offered us incredible continued support. I love being a part of the adopter community. After adopting, I also started volunteering, which has given me a first-hand look at the incredible work OTAT is doing for animals. I would HIGHLY recommend adopting, volunteering, or fostering with OTAT.

One Tail at a Time is the most inclusive and supportive rescue community I have ever been a part of. The communication is clear and timely, you are equipped with supplies and education that you need, and the staff is genuine and extremely dedicated to the cause. Heather and her team lead the organization with strength and poise and I honestly feel very privileged to work alongside them. My favorite part of being a OTAT foster and supporter is that we focus on dogs that might otherwise be overlooked- the "difficult" dogs, sick dogs, barky dogs, etc. It's funny- after enough love and care they ALL end up as very good boys/girls. The organization does so many amazing things and it shows through the amount of money raised and the amount of organizational support generated far and wide throughout the city and even country. I love you One Tail!
Hannah De Priest
We are proud to support OTAT! We had a fantastic adoption experience with them in July 2020 (we adopted our dog Teddy with their kind help!) Even with the pandemic happening, OTAT stepped up and saved so many dogs and cats all the while keeping their staff and potential adopters safe. Highly recommend if you are looking to adopt!
Julie Cahillane
As a long-time volunteer, it is amazing to me how adeptly the One Tail community has adapted to our current situation. Operating during a pandemic is not something any of us planned for and animal rescue is no different. The number of dogs rescued these last few months is mind blowing. The number of new fosters is inconceivable. Keeping track of everything at such an increased level is a LOT. OTAT and their volunteers amaze me every day. Seeing the excitement, and still measured patience and understanding, of new fosters gives me hope. No one anticipated rescues would have more fosters than dogs (seriously to go from begging for fosters for a challenging dog to people lining up to take on a project). No one anticipated our local shelter would have record low population and rescues would be able to support shelters from further away. But here we are. Much appreciation to OTAT and volunteers/fosters for rolling up their sleeves and getting it done. It may not always be perfect, but there are a huge number of dogs being saved, forever homes being found, and new people joining the amazing Chicago rescue community! Thank you.

5 years ago, my sister & BIL adopted a wonderful dog (Willow) through OTAT. This past November, I adopted my wonderful dog (Flicka, FKA Sunshine) through OTAT. OTAT is more than just a source for adopting a pet - they create a whole community and provide lots of support. As a first time, single puppy owner, this has been invaluable. OTAT staff are committed to finding the right homes for each dog and doing what they can to make sure it's their forever home. During our walks, I meet other people who have adopted through OTAT and they also report nothing but positive experiences. Even people who have never adopted or haven't adopted through OTAT comment about their great reputation. Flicka has brought so much joy and companionship to me during these turbulent times and I will forever be grateful to OTAT for schlepping her all the way from Texas and helping me adopt her!
Susan Elwell
I’ve adopted two dogs from One Tail. What a fabulous experience! This rescue has created a community with their adopters, fosters and volunteers. I am so grateful that we found them. They make a difference not only in the lives of the dogs they save but the community they serve.
Yarita Alfaro
Great. Went to meet dogs for adoption. Found one named Canoe, not our first choice but he was the ONE. He's Playful and friendly. Thanking the staff at One Tail At A Time for their time, help and advice into helping us bring him home. They explained his history and documentation. And gave us helpful tips for basic training & continous training & vaccines. Thank you so much.
jessie williams
We have adopted 2 dogs with OTAT over the last 4 years. They are amazing to work with. They spent time helping us find the right dog for us. They have the cutest descriptions online of the adoptable dogs. The OTAT community is just amazing. Highly recommend!
Amanda Scott
Fostered & adopted through One Tail. The amount of support they give you is unparalleled, and the community is so supportive as well. They do so much to save dogs, to educate everyone about dog behavior and care, and to support the communities of Chicago. They're amazing and I can't wait to get a house so we can adopt a second.
Tricia Sybesma
I have so much admiration and respect for what this organization is doing! Like many others, with the stay at home order I became interested in fostering. I had several “almost” fosters that fell through but was always glad that the dogs found a safe home. I knew that the right dog for me would come at the right time. Enter Midnight. He’s got some of the same issues as my previous dog, but less severe, and I fell in love with him immediately. The OTAT staff were always very transparent and upfront about what issues the dogs had, which is the responsible thing to do for these animals. They have been so supportive and helpful with him, and an added bonus is being part of the OTAT community, which is so supportive. This organization is doing amazing things for animals in a very challenging time!
Whitney McKedy
I'd like to start by saying I love this org, this community, and everything they stand for. To address some discontent expressed here about he foster program - OTAT had a huge influx in fosters when lockdown went into place, which allowed them to serve their #1 priority even better: saving and finding safe homes for dogs. Yes, it also means many fosters don't get to foster as often as they'd like, and yes it means processes got a little scrappier in order to get work done - but priority #1 never wavered, and that's how you judge a solid dog rescue. We've only ever had a supportive experience as fosters in the past, and a strong sense of community with all those volunteers ready to help. OTAT puts dogs first, and by doing so, they make an amazing impact.
Deanna Radjenovich
OTAT is an amazing organization full of wonderful staff and volunteers who really care about the animals above all else. I was a foster home then ended up adopting, and had great access to resources and support throughout my experience. They do their best to provide everything you need to be a successful foster (crates, food, toys, training help, etc) when available. As an adopter, they have support to answer questions, help with his training for behavioral issues, and a vast bank of referrals for everything you could possibly need (vets, trainers, groomers, etc.). I highly recommend volunteering or adopting through them!
Lindsay Ardiff
I have had a great experience fostering with OTAT. They have responded to the COVID crisis in a very diligent and professional manner, making a huge effort to save as many animals and make as many humans happy as possible. I appreciate their compassion, especially towards people whose circumstances have left them unwilling to care for pets. They are also very picky about fosters and adopters, in doing so, setting their animals up for success. I have learned so much from this fantastic community about pet homelessness, dog training, and more. Looking forward to continuing to work with them!
Laura Abbruzzese
I wanted to see what life would be like with a dog and decided to foster with OTAT. I made an appointment to meet with Amber to hook me up for my first foster. I walked out of there with a cute little chihuahua and a bag of supplies. He had some health issues and OTAT made sure to cover all of his procedures, which were extensive. After nursing him back to health I fell in love and with my first foster I failed! The adoption process was easy. The staff all have big hearts for animals and they are heroically out there saving dog after dog. I do not regret any of it! My boy has brought me so much joy.

I’d stalked One Tail at a Time for years before I was able to foster (and foster fail) in 2018. The foster application was through but still shorter to complete than those job applications that have you upload your resume and then make you type the whole thing anyways.
Heather (the Founder) has built an incredible community of like-minded people that save dogs but she also supports that community. Since the pandemic began, OTAT has done its best to help its community, finding money and resources to give back to the people who have helped make OTAT as awesome as it is. This community fees like a family reunion in the best way - we are all lucky to be a part of it.
Sydney Smith
We had (and are having) a great experience fostering and adopting thru OTAT! We started the process during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Heather and the OTAT Team were super communicative, and made the process really clear and quick and easy. There are so many folks looking for dogs now, thankfully, and OTAT posts about potential dogs in a few different places (closed FB group & a private foster page) to spread the word, and go really above and beyond to detail each dog’s needs and find the best fit possible. They provide all the food/vet care/toys/accessories you might need, and can arrange drop offs if you’re carless! We adopted our first foster, and we hope to foster thru OTAT in the future once this dog is truly settled. The OTAT team are rockstars, and I’m so glad they helped us find our dog!

One tail at a time has changed everything for me. I have fostered with other rescues and I can confidently say OTAT has the BEST support and community. I haven’t once felt over my head and have even had volunteers drop off food and supplies because I don’t have a car. During covid, the staff is working so hard and doing such a WONDERFUL job saving countless animals. Fostering is not about you, it’s about the animals and OTAT puts their animals first. I adopted one of my fosters recently and the process was easy over text since the adoption center was closed. Please consider adopting fostering or volunteering here!!!!
Sarah Matz
One Tail is a truly amazing organization. I've been involved with them on and off for 5 years - starting as a foster when I was in graduate school in 2015. I've watched the organization grow over the years, and am always impressed with the incredible staff and volunteers when I interact with them. I was part of the marathon team in 2017 and have volunteered at the adoption center. Now that my fiance and I are ready to adopt a dog of our own, we turned to One Tail to find him/her! I have been impressed with their COVID response so far - always putting the safety of the dogs, staff, and volunteers first. If you're looking to adopt a dog or cat in Chicago - stick with One Tail and you can't go wrong!
Michaela Shea-Gander
I highly recommend OTAT for anyone looking to foster or adopt in Chicago! the people who work there care so much about what they do
Kelly Sorfleet
Excellent local rescue working hard to help change Chicago! I've fostered for a year now, and have had nothing but great experiences working with the staff and volunteers. Each person on this team is dedicated to the cause and goes through great lengths to help the animals in need. Recently, they've seen a HUGE uptick in eager fosters and the demand for dogs is higher than it's ever been. With grace and perseverance the staff has stepped up tremendously to do as much as they physically can to meet that demand. The One Tail community is difficult to duplicate because the people involved, really truly do care about both the animals and the people.
Jillian Mallen
I have been a volunteer at One Tail at a Time for the past 4 years. I have had nothing but positive experiences with the staff members and all of their support on how to best help the dogs in their care. I have been in awe of their hard work and dedication to saving dogs during this unprecedented time. The behavior team, foster program and volunteer team provides amazing support to fosters and adopters. One tail is the best.
Katie Sweetser
OTAT is a truly magical place. I adopted my best friend from there back in 2016 and couldn’t be more grateful for what they did for him. OTAT helps dogs in need that get overlooked by other shelters, have expensive vet bills, are broken or sick, are deemed too big by city dwellers and the list goes on. I’ve fostered for over a year now after fostering with many other rescues. No where do you get the support as a foster, adopter, or volunteer that you get at OTAT. These people commit countless hours and blood sweat and tears to helping dogs. Truly magical.
Kat C
Love OTAT! We adopted our Matcha from them and couldn’t be happier. They truly love and care for their rescues. Thank you OTAT for giving a chance to so many animals in need❤️
Amanda Retzer
I absolutely love fostering through OTAT! They are great when it comes to making sure you are comfortable and give amazing resources to help the dogs thrive! I have had such a great experience and I am so happy knowing the volunteers and members are there for support.
Amy Ricchiuto
I absolutely love the team and mission at One Tail! They get to know each dog's unique needs and personality by utilizing a network of dedicated foster families. So when you consider a dog through One Tail, you know so much more about what your future family member will be like in your home, with your family, and in your lifestyle. They don't treat dogs like commodities; they think about the long term effect on your family AND the dog. For that reason, I recommend getting an application on file and consulting with them during your search! Don't give up on the process. Thanks, One Tail, for building such a real, personal community of dog lovers in Chicago, so that everyone can play a role in helping dogs that need homes. My dog and I have been fostering with One Tail since October 2019.
Justin Farber
Excellent organization doing very important work! They've grown a ton and helped so many animals. We recently adopted Pearl, a former puppy mill mama husky who was rescued from a shelter in Missouri. We've signed up to volunteer and look forward to helping out. The staff is amazing and friendly, though understandably can get very busy on the weekend. Their adoption process is thorough yet quick. Stop by to meet the dogs and to learn more!

One Tail at a Time is an absolutely wonderful organization. I found my best friend (dog) through them and have recommended them to many friends and family who have also adopted through them! I have fostered with them many times and can’t say enough about how wonderfully supportive they are. If you are looking to adopt and to be matched with your perfect pal, PLEASE make sure to make One Tail the first place you check out. Thanks for being so amazing!
Connor Moul
We currently foster through OneTail, and could not be more thrilled with the experience. They truly care about their dogs and cats well being, and ensuring they get matched to the best possible homes. The whole staff is friendly, engaging, and will promptly respond with any concerns around foster, adoption, or miscellaneous animal behavior help! Couldn’t imagine going anywhere else in Chicago to adopt a new pet
Emily Weiss
I’ve been fostering with One Tail at a Time for almost 6 months now and am so impressed with the organization. The foster coordinators (especially Amber she’s amazing) are extremely responsive and walked me through the process of taking care of a dog especially as a new foster. They have a volunteer run foster help desk that is always available to answer questions that arise while fostering. In the face of COVID they’ve taken on even more dogs with the existing staff and have taken every precaution to keep all involved safe.
Gabriela Gonzalez
I've been fostering from one tail since summer of 2018 and it has been an incredible experience. They are the most positive supportive team to be involved with, any questions/concerns are always acknowledge and they give you all the tools/resources to be able to assist your foster dog. Some people might now like the fact that they screen you but the goal is to rescue dogs and this can only be done if you are a match for the dogs. Great cause and great community to be a part of.
Maritza Chavez
I love one tail! They make the adoption process so accessible. They were welcoming and took time to explain and answer my questions about adoption. I decided to foster instead of adopt since I’ve never owned a dog before. It was great to foster and help a couple of dogs in the process. Just great, helpful people here with an amazing mission! Love them and the puppers!
Alyssa Hollander
My puppy Maeve is the best thing in my life she brings me joy everyday. Her foster mom was so incredible for taking on a pregnant dog and her 8 puppies what an amazing human. The whole process of adoption and matching up was great the staff is so nice. They really know their dogs and their different needs would adopt again in a heart beat. :)
Jillian Braun
One Tail at a Time has been an incredible resource in the rescue community and Chicago at large! I am so fortunate to have adopted my dog through them. Adoption was such a positive experience, it opened the door to learning more and I am now an active volunteer, foster, and Associate Board member.
One Tail at a Time is a small but mighty rescue taking in some of the most overlooked dogs and giving them second chances. The organization is also incredibly flexible and works with individuals (both human and animal variety!) on their needs. In addition, the work One Tail does in the community to help curb the shelter crisis at large with owner support, shelter diversion, free and low-cost clinics, etc. is incredible. Chicago is lucky to have such a dedicated group of individuals helping our homeless pets.
Elizabeth Lee
I love OTAT and their amazing staff, techs, and director. They have saved SO many animals during the Covid crisis and they did great work before then, too. They work tirelessly to get potential fosters connected with dogs, to provide tons of supplies for their fosters, and to even provide training for dogs who've already been adopted! (I know some people are upset that they can't get a foster dog, but that's only because so many amazing people are stepping up to foster! Their hearts are in the right places. As a teacher, I know what it's like to be bombarded with emails and constant expectations of me, but Heather is handling it like a champ). Thank you for all you do, OTAT!
Meghann Rosenberg
In the last six years we have adopted two wonderful dogs from OTAT. Daisy (Theia)our second came from a horrible situation, emaciated, and covered in mange. We initially weren’t there to see her, but the dog we were seeing didn’t care for Poppy. Once Daisy met Poppy our lives were changed. They are sisters through and through and despise being apart. OTAT did a wonderful job at figuring out what was best for both dogs and our family.
Molly Dominick
Almost 3 years ago I reached out to One Tail interested in a dog listed on their website that I was interested in. I was looking for a companion for my senior pit bull that needed some extra company, and they told me to go to the adoption center to meet the dog. Upon meeting me, and my senior pitty, it was decided that the dog I had been interested in wasn't a good fit. Within a week, they had me meet another dog that both my pitty and I fell in love with right away. We had a trial period of a few days to decide if Simon was a good fit, and he's been with me ever since. We were both devastated when we lost my pitty less than a year later, but have had wonderful experiences fostering, and foster failing last year with OTAT? Hearing that the original dog I had inquired about wasn't a good fit was hard, but meeting their idea for a great fit has been amazing. Simon is the love of my life, and I can't image life, especially that last year of quarantine, without him. OTAT cares about their dogs, and wants to set people and the animals up for success.
Lauren Scalzo
One Tail is not only a great place to find a dog to join your family, but also a place to find a community of caring individuals. OTAT focuses heavily on responsibly rescuing dogs from our city shelters, and also assists the Chicago community at large with vaccine and spay/neuter clinics as well as the CRISP program. I'm so lucky to have adopted from One Tail and joined a fantastic group of compassionate people in the process.
Julie Schultz
Amazing experience! I had fostered for OTAT for a little over a year before I failed and kept a dog from Alabama. Fostering for One Tail has never been easier (highly suggest to anyone looking to get involved but not ready for a full commitment ie. adopting). One Tail is composed of the most supportive dog-loving army that Chicago could ever hope to find!
Meir Hauser
We fostered and adopted through OTAT and they are an amazing organization. They are kind, care about their dogs, and work hard to ensure that every person is matched with a dog that is well suited for them. I highly recommend them.
Emily Angel
We have fostered for One Tail at a Time for almost two years now, and they are the best!! You’d be hard pressed to find a shelter in Chicago doing more for their dogs or supporting their volunteers (I mean, hellooooo they have a virtual foster help desk! Who does that?!). Would highly recommend as a place to volunteer, foster, or adopt—we have done all three!
Clare Austen-Smith
I waited a while to be able to foster with OTAT, and it was worth it! The wait is because there has been such a high demand for dogs to foster with folks working from home due to COVID and because OTAT does the legwork to make sure not only you know what to expect for your foster but what the foster dog needs - they have on boarding for new fosters, a foster coordinator for you and your dog, tons of resources, and are clear and communicative about the whole process. I felt really assured fostering through them for the first time because of how prepared and knowledgeable they are. Their priority is placing dogs in the best foster for them, and it shows! I had a great experience with my first foster from pick up to vet appointments - everything was clear, communicated well, and Amber, my foster coordinator, helped me with any questions I had right away.
Anna
OTAT staff were prompt in email response/phone calls, answering the MANY questions I had, meeting up on my preferred time to do a dog meet (I have another dog), and they made the adoption process easy. They gave us plenty of resources both during the adoption time and through email.
Sarah Wyman
I adopted my wonderful cat from OTAT and she is perfect. The adoption agent worked with me and found the cat that best fit my life and personality. They took time to make sure myself, my environment were right for my cat and I am very appreciative of this.
Peg Burr
Love, Love, LOVE OTAT! I've been fostering and volunteering. So professionally run and caring.
Auste Rimkus
I love OTAT! I was first a foster, then turned adopter. I have always felt that One Tail provides so many resources and support, even long after the dog has been adopted. The thing I respect most about One Tail is that their first priority is, and has always been, their dogs. They have taken many steps to reduce the amount of dogs being returned to shelters, and have always put their dogs’ needs before anything else. Some people might be offended if they don’t get the dog they want, but One Tail knows that dogs are not accessories and looks aren’t everything. Sometimes, special dogs need special homes, and One Tail will take the right steps to find that.
Chris Hawxhurst
Fantastic organization. We adopted our dog at one time two years ago and continue to foster and volunteer. Great people passionate about their mission and all the focus is on providing the dogs the best lives. Can't recommend enough!
Ryan Terrana
Found my son Howie here. I originally wanted to just foster a dog to see if I had the stones to take care of one. Howie (Marty) had ringworm and needed to be taken to the vet for sulfur baths every week. I did not have a car. The OTAT team would pick Ringworm Marty up every week and take him to his appointments and drop him off later. We grew a bond and I eventually adopted him after he got better. Thanks OTAT!
Tiffany Tran
OTAT was possibly the best experience I could have had as a first time foster and then foster fail. They really did supply everything I could need to foster a dog, which made it easy for me to really determine if I wanted to have dog permanently. When the dog got sick, I emailed the coordinators who got me an appointment with the vets ASAP. When I needed more supplies, they made it easy for me to pick up more. This was such a good experience, I obviously fell in love with the dog and decided to keep it. Even though I had a lot of things happening at the same time (trying to get the dog spayed before adoption, going on vacation a week later, and the coordinating paperwork) it was probably as seamless as it could have been.
The people at OTAT genuinely want to re-home as many dogs as possible to good and qualified owners. Whether you're considering fostering for them, adopting from them or just trying to find a wonderful organization to donate money to, I wholeheartedly suggest you consider One Tail at a Time!
meredith keefe
because of covid-19, there are far more interested adopters and foster homes than there are dogs available which is a great problem to have for the dogs albeit frustrating if you are looking to take in a temporary distraction from the unpleasant world we are currently living in. however, i stuck it out and finally got my first foster dog through OTAT and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. they took the time to review my household through the application and place a dog in my home that was a mutual fit. my two resident dogs got some good playtime with a temporary sister, and we were able to have a safe and loving handoff to that dog’s new permanent home. thank you for being organized and helping all the dogs and humans in this tough time, one tail! i will continue to attempt to foster again and encourage all of you waiting to foster as well! it will happen for ya, it just takes the right dog to fit.

One Tail at a Time is where we found our beautiful girl, we are what you call foster fails ( we fostered and decided we couldn't let our girl go). The main thing to consider when going into fostering is that it is about what you can do for the dogs and not what vice versa. Fosters help OTAT in the discovery phase of determining dogs likes, needs, home habits, etc so if you are looking for a dog that is trained, dog friendly, etc, they can't guarantee those things about foster dogs, and really what they ask for on that front is homes that are open to helping them determine that. They provide the supplies, training support, behavior teams, etc to help with the entire process and pay for the vet bills, etc. If you are looking for a dog whom they can give you more info about such as leash behavior, cat compatibility, etc, that's more suited for the adoption page where the dogs posted have been vetted by fosters already and have that sort of information for their forever homes. We adopted our girl, who turned out to be an incredible fit for us, but we didn't know that when we fostered her and that wasn't a concern, because we were just looking to help OTAT rescue a dog and give them a nice warm home while she got ready for adoption. She came heartworm positive, and OTAT pays for this and does it through their vet parner. We are going through the process now and they have been AMAZING at helping to make it seamless. We are blown away by how much support they give while you foster, and continue to give when you adopt, how much they care about people, raising money to help those affected by these times and always being an outlet for anything and everything on their facebook pages, as well as how incredible the OTAT community is at large, always offering to help when people ask, etc. Hands down, if that was not made obvious by my lengthy post, I recommend checking them out.
Rochelle Miller
OTAT and their foster program is fantastic! The amount of support from both the staff and volunteers makes the process easy and helps fosters feel confident in the care they are giving their foster dogs. I can’t say enough good things about this organization.
Aaron Brown
Adopting from One Tail at a Time was an incredibly easy and supportive process. My fiancé and I had been fostering dogs for PAWS Chicago for a year and a half and had just signed up to foster for OTAT as well when we met and fell in love with a wonderful pit that the shelter had up for adoption. After meeting him at his foster parents a few times, we couldn't resist bringing him home forever.
OTAT made the adoption process incredibly smooth and provided recommendations for vets, trainers, and equipment for our new family member. Adopters get a consultation with their in-house trainer and there is a vibrant community of folks who have adopted from the shelter to provide any sort of advice and guidance you may need. I couldn't have imagined a better process to adopting our first dog and can't recommend OTAT enough.

We fostered a dog back in February and everything went well. We had hoped to adopt our pup but quickly realized we weren’t the right family for him. From what I can tell he landed in a great place for him. Not sure about the last review being so critical. I’ve seen this happen to another local rescue and I think it is truly unfair to judge these folks for processes during the pandemic. From what I can tell there are somewhere between 100 to 250 applications for every available dog. They have been deluged with applications and have limited resources. I honestly don’t know how the rescues do it, because I see them post (with specificity) directions and needs for each of the dogs only to see people immediately reply and then say which of the needs they don’t or can’t meet. I think OTAT is great, they have an amazing community of support and I hope the enthusiasm lasts longer than the pandemic.

I can't say enough great things about One Tail at a Time! I've been so impressed with them-especially during a difficult time in the world! They are so committed to finding the right fit for the animals. They make it a positive experience for all involved! I fostered with them (and definitely hope/plan to do so again!) and eventually when the time is right this is where I'll get my own pup! Thank you One Tail at a Time!
Rachel Shrock
We love One Tail. Had an excellent experience with thoughtful staff when we adopted our now 5-year-old dog as a puppy. Even worked with us when her health issues went beyond what was originally diagnosed. Three other close friends have adopted through One Tail with good experiences. Proud owner of the t-shirt (sorry for you you don't have a sense of humor, Susan Blatz), we also donate $ monthly and supplies when we can. Highly recommended.

LOVE. Humble, motivated people working to save the elderly, the ill, and the bully breed babes (in addition to the fluffy guys) from animal control. They are doing their dang best and the support they provide even after adoption is phenomenal. I would 100% foster or adopt from OTAT again. My favorite Chicago rescue.

As a volunteer, foster, and adopter, I cannot say enough good things about OTAT. Their dedication and commitment to saving animals and to the community is unmatched. And while I didn't think the team could work much harder than they did in 2019-- 2020 brought significant expansion--all in the name of saving more animals. And 2020 brought Covid-19 and the need to care for these animals and move them through the adoptions process in a safe and compliant way. The foster program ensures that OTAT learn all they can about an animal in order to place them in the best possible adoptive home. Many animals are adopted out quickly once posted, and it's important that adopters be patient and become knowledgeable of the process so as to limit frustration and disappointment. It is the desire of everyone at OTAT to find a match for all of the animals and all of the adopters! I am living proof of that as my OTAT adopted grand-dog is splayed across my computer as I write this post, licking my face and wagging his tale! Thank you OTAT!

I have been so lucky to foster through One Tail at a Time. Every member of their foster community I’ve interacted with has demonstrated tremendous support and care for the both the people and animals with which they interact. They have stepped up immeasurably during this challenging time and worked incredibly hard to place as many dogs in homes as they are able to responsibly support.

OTAT is one of the most dedicated rescues I’ve ever seen. I’ve volunteered with them for just over 6 months now and this community is incredible. The staff work tirelessly at the center and on tons of events and programs; they are genuinely great people and would do anything for these dogs. They’re truly committed to making Chicago a no-kill city. Any human would be lucky to end up with an OTAT dog!

I fostered, and then adopted, my new roommate, JuJu (fka Parsnip), from OTAT. What a caring group!!
Marlene Davenport
I’ve been volunteering with OTAT since 2012. I’ve helped at community pet day, adoption & meet & greet events. I’ve volunteered at the adoption center and was on the Association Board for a few years. We’ve even had the pleasure of fostering several dogs. Through it all, I never seen a more dedicated, thoughtful, determined & passionate group of amazing humans do so much to save animals in need. And OTAT just isn’t about saving dogs, it’s about helping families in the community through financial assistance and education. OTAT makes a significant difference in the lives of countless animals & families each & every day. I’m so thankful for this wonderful rescue. Heather Owen is an extraordinary human with an incredible heart and a brilliant mind dedicated to making the world a better place. It’s an honor to call her my friend & personal hero. If you want to make a difference too, sign up to volunteer! It will change your life.

Adopted my dog from them last year- I love my dog but they didn't tell me about a lot of the behavioral issues she had and played it off as being friendly or other cute ways of saying she had a lot of issues without telling me she had those issues. I still would have adopted her but it would have been nice to know what i was really dealing with. They also said she was much younger than she really was so I had to pay their puppy fee even though she was almost an adult when i got her.
Joanne Moliski
Heather's leadership in this difficult time has been incredible and all the staff have been busting their tails to innovate and adapt while at the same time remaining remarkably responsive to their fosters and adopters. They have remained committed to following the science around covid and protecting staff, fosters, and adopters with strict safety guidelines. They are the rescue I send all my friends to, especially my queer, disabled and POC friends as OTAT's commitment to understanding the intersections between human life and animal welfare have in my experience translated directly to positive adoption experiences for people who may not have had as great a time elsewhere because of their identities.
Samantha Puente
We adopted our lovely, Olive in July of 2020 and couldn’t of asked for a better experience. It took us almost a year to find our exact match. We worked with many organizations, but no one was as supportive and as helpful as OTAT.
Joanne Guarderas
You will not find a more determined, fun loving, dedicated group than One Tail At A Time. From the director, Heather, all staff, the many volunteers & foster homes...this community is THE best dog rescue. Every dog saved is loved like their own until a wonderful forever home is found. If you want to help save a life, in any capacity able, join this community. You won’t regret it.

I've adopted 2 dogs from One Tail at a Time. Because I had such a good experience adopting the first, Link, I started volunteering for them and only loved them more from then on. They've grown so much in such a short amount of time and have community outreach programs, a shelter diversion program, and even now a bottle-fed kitten program since they learned that bottle-fed kittens are some of the most vulnerable in shelters. Also, once your dog is an OTAT dog, they're one for life, and this gives me peace of mind should something happen to me. I love OTAT and am so grateful Chicago has them advocating for dogs and cats in the city!
Dan Wilcox
By far one of the best rescue agencies in the Chicagoland area. I work at a vet clinic in Oak Park and have run into many an OTAT alum in the area even a few at the vet. Nothing but amazing experiences when adopting thru OTAT. Heather and the board are doing amazing work in the Chicagoland area. Last year the organization saved over 500 dogs! Selfless individuals! When we are finally ready it will be an OTAT dog no question!!
Anne Jung
We adopted our dog from here. They have every animal's best interest at heart and it shows in their work. They're awesome and I highly recommend donating to them or adopting from them if you are looking for a furbaby.
Erica Fischer
After going to a few adoption events and dealing with other "rescues" that felt more like puppy mills, I was so happy that One Tail took the time to read my application, understand what I was looking for in a dog, and help match me with my best gal pal Zoey. 100% she is the perfect dog for me.
Karen Hinchcliffe
Brought home our new family member today! All the staff members I worked with were very friendly & informative. Our lil 'Daffy' was worth the wait!
Stephen Stare
Can't say enough good things about this organization. Felt super supported during the whole process and was able to foster a dog to better prepare them for their forever home. Everything from the orientation to the communication while we had our foster to the turn over process was very professional and effective. Amazing experience!
Lolly H
I had been looking to rescue/adopt a pup for about 4 months before I was suggested a pup from One Tail at a Time. The adoption process was easy. I had been very overwhelmed and frustrated with other rescues adoption processes. Once I adopted my new friend, Frankie(formerly RuPawl) the rescue added me to their rescue facebook group and they also provided me with several resources for training, grooming, vet care, daycare/dog walkers. Overall I am very happy with this rescue and will recommend them to other loved ones looking to adopt.
meha kapur
The process seems pretty quick, I appeared for online meeting and had to fill a form and within a couple hours I was an approved Foster, after this u have to just express interest in the dog posts online and they get back with u. I haven't had a chance to Foster a pet yet as I guess due to quarantine a lot of ppl already are doing that, also that since mine is a small house, I can't express interest in a lot of dogs as I will have to wait for a small one, but fingers crossed 😋
Katie Young
We adopted our 6 month old lab mix from one tail at a time. Our "puppy" is now 1.5 years and perfect! They made the process so easy and we helped give a great dog a home. I can't imagine life without him!
Audrey Deziel
Such an amazing place! The workers are so dedicated to their work it’s impressive. They work 24-7 and have a thorough process ensuring it’s right for both dog and people! I’ve seen lots of people not understanding their process and that makes me sad because they constantly work to provide the best quality care for their animals! I cannot thank One Tail At A Time enough for all their hard work!
Megan E. Pagel
One Tail at a Time is amazing!!! Their staff is caring and dedicated and I'm so impressed by the community they've built and how they truly care for the animals that are in their care, even after you adopt! Truly a wonderful, supportive organization that I'm continually impressed by.
ZaySZN
Found my best friend here also very good and reasonable prices
Johnny Rodogiannis
This is a great group of supportive people who care and want to help. To be completely selfish, it's a perfect program where I get to feel like I'm helping dogs in need and have all the support I want. I am an active foster and when I am ready I will adopt from this great organization!
Natalie Blumer
Wonderful people who helped us find our perfect dog. We also did Manners 101 and learned a lot. Sarah was a fantastic trainer and juggled 6 dogs plus owners really well. We will definitely go to the next course when they offer it next.
A tip: you can fill out an application before meeting a dog. Then, if you meet and fall in love, you can take them home the same day!
Kae Desai
Definitely felt unfairly discriminated against. Customer service was also very childlike/adolescent.
Edit: After having another opportunity to interact with this organization I can bump my review up a few stars. Initial impression and feeling of discrimination still stays with me but I would not discourage others from doing business with them based on my experience as I believe they are somewhat new and learning how to operate. They can definitely benefit from being more transparent and detailed with clients and learning more about clients before making final decisions. I think connecting is made harder by the restrictions due to the pandemic so would encourage video conferencing, especially at the start. Otherwise, things got better after the rough start and I felt supported for the most part especially after they switched the team member I corresponded with.
Debra Hughes
I adopted Cindy Lou Who today and everyone at one tail at a time were wonderful the adoption process was fast and easy and I would recommend this place to everyone thank you all so very much for your help and consideration 😊🐕❤ …

I found my Dog, Rufus, F.K.A. Rukus at one tail. The staff was awesome. It was easy, and he's a good boy. I definitely recommend them if you're looking. They will be my first choice from here on out for doggos.
PrincessBubbleGum SnickerDoodle
They are amazing! They helped me get my two (non OTAT) dogs vaccinated and spayed when going through some tough times. I volunteer with them now and I see how dedicated the staff and volunteers are to every dog.
Darryl Holliday
We foster dogs from OTAT regularly and each time has been great. The OTAT staff is super helpful with materials, tips and support.
keith rollins
Dogs are clearly better than people. One tail at a time understands that. A fantastic organization of people who truly love dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals. They do God's work
Michael Rogers
Have nothing but great things to say about this organization. They assisted us with fostering and gave encouragement and aid in behavioral issues when we needed it. Felt nothing but love for the animals and support for their foster homes. 11/10 would recommend.

A leader in the Chicago rescue community, a wonderful place to volunteer, an even better place to foster or adopt from and a way better place to support with a cash donation. I am in awe by the tremendous rescue efforts and dynamic leadership and constant growth and innovation.
