Pumpernickel saw Dr. Lovelace for her annual checkup. He was gentle and kind with her and kept me informed of her status and recommendations for keeping her healthy in the coming year. She is 17 and blind, but with the quality care from Animal Hospital of North Asheville since we adopted her 6 years ago, she has a rich quality of life. All of the staff obviously loves animals.

My current dog likes to go there, but doesn't really want to be examined. They do everything they can to make him comfortable and work with him to keep him calm and have as good an experience as possible. I highly recommend AHNA. This was the best experience I have ever had at a vets office. From the moment I walked in the door to the follow up phone call from the vet the day after. I loved the No Fear techniques they use and it definitely reduced my dogs stress. In stead of whining, pacing and having accidents on the floor from anxiety, he was playing and calm during our visit. We had a 19-1/2 year old cat who had been in excellent health up until the previous few months, and had minimal interactions with a vet over the last few years, and we had recently moved to the area. We were referred to Dr. Frye by out daughter and I couldn't have been happier. Although we had to say final goodbyes to our companion of 19-1/2 years, Dr. Frye and his staff were so incredibly compassionate. He discussed his assessment findings, offered us options, without giving false hope with therapies. We knew there was no "cure" for his diagnosis - he was simply at the end of a long and loved life. Dr. Frye never once rushed us into a decision, and he offered support as my husband and I talked through the options and decision. For the first time in 45 years, we have no pets -- if we choose to open our home to another - I know what vet I will choose.

I am so impressed with the loving attention Dr. Wootten gives to her patients. My pup has experienced a few twists and turns in her elder years that felt scary for me, but Dr. Wooten provides a calming thoughtful approach at each visit, with excellent and thorough care, helpful information, and supportive insight. She addresses the reason for our visit with gentleness and also follows up to see how things are going. I've considered moving from the area a few times but have stayed primarily because of the care my pup receives from Dr. Wootten and the Animal Hospital of North Asheville. UPDATE: we cannot say enough about our ongoing experiences with this practice. Dr Frye is an exceptionally caring, compassionate and knowledgeable vet. We have had several emergencies with our senior dogs, and the kindness we have been shown by everyone is heartwarming. I am a very protective and proactive pet Mom. We moved here recently, and I was very worried about transitioning to a new veterinary practice. My mind was set at ease by this very professional, caring and competent practice. Everyone, from phone appointments to vet techs and the veterinarians we saw made me feel extremely comfortable with our decision to go to North Asheville Animal Hospital. On a side note, I brought a dog that was limping badly, and they sent two vet techs and a stretcher, if needed, to help us get inside. One of the very strong ladies was able to lift my dog and carry her inside. I was helped promptly when we arrived, and seen quickly once we were put into a room. Highly recommend NAAH.

I went to Animal Hospital of North Asheville for a laparoscopic spay for my dog. They are the only facility in western nc that I could find that has this specialized equipment. I was very happy with the whole experience. Everyone I interacted with was professional and welcoming, and even my scared dog relaxed a bit once she met the surgeon. The surgery was very routine, and they released her the same day. They sat down with me for 15 minutes and went over the post surgical instructions and answered all my questions. My dogs have had 3 other surgeries this past year and none of the other places I have gone have taken this much care to make sure I knew what to do and to expect afterwards. I 100% would bring my animals here for all of their care if I lived closer.

I dread going to the vet due to financials; I always feel ripped off. Here, I do not feel that way! Everyone who interacted with my cat made her and me feel as comfortable as possible and I know they did a thorough job with what I asked them to do for my cat. I especially appreciated them doing blood draws and cleaning her wound in front of me so I could see what was going on rather than waiting around worrying. They are excellent. They have all the up to date equipment like ultrasound so you don’t have to go elsewhere. They have taken excellent care of all of our dogs. Both of the vets we've seen at this clinic have been excellent, and so have all the techs! They never make you feel rushed, and they're really good at answering questions. The front desk folks are really great too. This clinic does all kinds of things both big and small to take care of its clients' animals. For example, I've been going to vets for 40 years and this is the first clinic that's provided little fleeces in the waiting room for covering pet carriers to reduce the stress of the pets inside them. This clinic really cares! I'd recommend them to anyone.

I don’t know where to start to thank the team at Animal Hospital of North Asheville for taking such good care of our family. Our little beagle, Amber, was always having some rare health condition. I truly believe she wouldn’t have lived to be 16 without the care we received from AHNA. I really don’t know if any other veterinary team in the area could have diagnosed her with some of the ailments she had. Then, when Snoopy was super sick, they were able to quickly diagnose him with Addison’s Disease and start him on his treatments. I am so very thankful to Dr Fry, Dr Loveless, and Dr Duncan for saving our dog’s lives over and over again. The staff is out of this world friendly and you can definitely tell they want what is best for each animal that comes through their door. They have all of the medical equipment to diagnose and treat which helps get answers and treatments right away. I think what makes this veterinarian office different is that all of the veterinarians work together to diagnose. If one doesn’t know something, they aren’t afraid to reach out to someone who does know instead of just guessing. I am so very, very thankful.

We've been taking our senior Labrador to AHNA since we moved to Asheville in 2016. They take good care of her. The staff is friendly, efficient and always take the time to explain everything plainly. They clearly care about the animals they treat and their owners. When our Lab came to the end of her life, the staff enabled her to end her life in comfort and dignity. Great place to take your pet - They actually separate the dogs and cats in the waiting room to make it easier on pet and pet parent. The staff is wonderful and caring - Dr Plankenhorn gave our cat a thorough exam and called after test results were returned to talk to us about the results. Highly recommended!

Recently this hospital was the only one on a Saturday that would take my dog who was very sick with no appointment. Drs Wooten, Garner and Frye are excellent with an amazing bedside manner. I have been impressed with how easy it is to get an appointment and lately the wait time has been very short once in the building. I was there on 5/9/22 with my dog who had a hot spot. Arrived at 10:40 am. Left at 11:10 am with two prescriptions. Dr Wooten is very knowledgeable, personable and efficient.

The Animal Hospital of North Asheville has been the only veterinary practice that's been equipped and willing to accommodate and support my highly anxious and reactive dog. It has been years since my dog has been able to have a physical exam, despite some serious health issues, and Dr. Frye and Emily went out of their way to make this appointment possible. And...it was a huge success!! Not only did they make a private room available (out of sight of other dogs), but they even moved another dog who was making some noises during an exam to a room further away from us. Pamela and the rest of the staff have been answering my endless questions and concerns and reassuring me for weeks, and the depth of care and empathy I saw (and felt!) from the team, both for me and my dog, was unparalleled. On time with our visit. Masking is required at this time and I felt comfortable handing the two cats off to go into their visit without me. They offered a second vaccine that is due next month and I appreciated that I didn't have to bring them back within a few weeks for another vaccine visit. They are not the cheapest place; I do believe the care my cats receive when at the Animal Hospital are worth the small difference in cost for the vaccines. They are also pretty close to our house and this is very helpful to me.

We feel the love for animals is very high at AHNA. The care our dogs get here is unmatched and the dogs love it as well. That last line may sound strange/ridiculous to you but this is the first vet office our dogs enter willingly. We've seen 3 different doctors here, and many vet techs. My older tabby cat, Stumpy, had what I had thought was a tooth abscess. Unfortunately it was discovered that he had a mass. I took him to Animal Hospital North Asheville and they are the most caring group of people I've ever met. It devastated me but I ended up deciding to have him put to sleep due to the pain he was suffering. This staff was so understanding and kind. They truly love animals and understand how hard it is to let them go. They made it as easy as they could for me and my baby Stump. I will always be thankful for their kindness. I will bring my other animals here for checkups and shots in the future. I recommend this vet group 100%!

When my little Saki fell seriously ill late Saturday afternoon I was in a panic. AHNA was closing in less than an hour, and I live 30 minutes away. I know there are emergency vets in the area, but they don't hold a candle to our vet practice. They told me to hurry on in, and reassured me that they would be waiting for us. There was never a better sight for sore eyes than the cheerful AHNA crew who were to a person professional, efficient, and supportive. Dr. Early figured out what the problem was, explained it in layman's terms, and patiently answered all of my questions. I spent a long night keeping close watch over my sweet dog, and in the morning, a Sunday morning no less, got a call from Dr. Early checking to see how Saki was doing, and helping me with signs/symptoms to watch for, and how to respond. Here we are on Sunday evening, and my little dog is beginning to show signs of recovery. AHNA's compassionate and quick response in the nick of time averted what could well have been a tragedy. Excellent equipment in a sparkling clean facility are always good, but it is the staff at AHNA that make it the wonderful top notch place it is. When I moved to the south end of town, for convenience I tried another vet but came back to AHNA because they cannot be matched in any way. From the staff to the doctors, they are all compassionate and stay on top of your pets health. I had been with them for about 30 years and after experiencing other vets in Asheville I have come back even if the drive is much longer and the cats are not happy with being in the car for extended periods of time, it is worth it. Highly recommended.

Was in search of a new vet for my dog and Animal Hospital of North Asheville came highly recommended from a few people. Let me start by saying, they did not disappoint. The purpose of the visit was just a regular annual comprehensive exam + some vaccines, but Dr. Plankenhorn spent almost an hour with us just getting to know my dog and his history. She, as well as the entire staff, were so attentive, gentle, and loving with my somewhat anxious pup. I could not recommend her and the office more highly. My only regret is not finding them sooner!

I have been going to this vet since 1980 and don’t plan to go elsewhere. My only complaint is that they can be a bit pricey, but they are well worth it. All staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the vets really know their stuff. One of my dogs in particular has all kinds of weird issues, and her doctor works tirelessly to get to the bottom of them. If you can afford to go here, I highly recommend them!

My husband and I recently had to put our sweet baby girl down due to cancer, Dr plankenhorn literally shared the pain with us as we cried. She showed immense compassion and understanding and patience in that very difficult time. And when we were ready to get another fur baby. We knew exactly who we wanted to see her. Our new girl is a bit special and has high anxiety. Dr plankemhorn took her time and was very thorough with our new girl. All the staff there is absolutely amazing.

This state of the art veterinary center has instituted a great safety system for COVID-19 protection. It's easy & efficient to bring your pets in, or pick up supplies. The facilities have up to date treatment & equipment, & the staff are professional, kind & knowledgeable. I have a very high maintenance 5# Chihuahua & just for an annual checkup & nail clipping, he needs sedation. Dr. Garner & staff did an amazing job with him!!! Everything went quick & smooth. I will definitely return & recommend this facility!!!

I called at 5:15 last evening and they were able to get me an appt. w/Dr. Lovelace for 8 this morning for my dog even though I'd never been to this Animal Hospital. Dr. L is wonderful. Very thorough, thoughtful, took time to explain the whats/whys/costs/etc. I live in East Asheville and had tried vets closer to home but never satisfied. Definitely worth the drive to north Asheville. I highly recommend Animal Hospital of N. Avl to anyone with a pet.

So so so spectacular! Dr. Plankenhorn, Dr. Frye, and Dr. Loveless literally saved my dog’s life. I’m so happy with her treatment and honestly just impressed that she survived a disease with a pretty high mortality rate. I grew up near a very successful vet school and my family kept suggesting I bring my pup there. But there is no doubt in my mind that we are receiving the absolute best care in the nation at AHNA. Because they have a large staff, there are so many smart people looking at your dogs case, you can’t get better care. The technicians are excellent as well and even know us when we call and just give my dog’s name. I seriously hope no one needs to use their vet for anything outside of routine care, but should you ever have an acute need, this is the absolute best place to be a patient!

We are long time customers. Our 8 yr. old Golden Retriever suddenly came down with gastric distress and needed to be seen by the vet. The staff was able to get us an appt. with Dr. Amy Plankenhorn the same day. After a thorough examination the Dr. Correctly diagnosed the problem and told us how to treat it. We had an Advil pill consumed by one of our two puppies. It is toxic to dogs and can cause long term organ issues in dogs. We quickly rushed our puppies to get emergency help and they took us back to the ER room without delay and induced vomiting. It took only 15 minutes or so and our puppies were saved, thank God!! The whole experience was A+. Everyone I came into contact with was professional. Due to COVID, I was not able to go in with my dog but the technician was so kind and comforting that I knew he was in good hands. The veterinarian, Dr. Streifel, was amazing! She called and informed me of the diagnosis and treatment plan. This place provides quality care at an affordable price. If I had one regret, it is that they are not in my hometown. Our pup had a complete tear of the collateral ligament. After meeting with Dr Duncan we decided to have it repaired. She did well the first week, but then an infection started. They staff was wonderful , accommodating and caring. Our Molly ended up with a bacterial infection that was resistant to many antibiotics. After discussing the options we decided the plan o care would be to leave her at the hospital for IV antibiotics over two days. We appreciate the time spent with us and our pup. We’ve been taking our pets to AHNA for almost ten years. They are fantastic! The practice is a longer drive as we are west of Asheville and they are in North Asheville, but they are so great it is worth the drive. First off, the veterinarians at AHNA are amazingly kind and clearly love animals. They always take the best care of our dog and cat and I completely trust them to do the safest and best practice. My old cat, now deceased, had kidney disease and many other health issues at the end. Dr. Susan Wooten (Duncan) is our primary veterinarian, and she was just the best— she was always caring and knowledgeable—and gave my old cat the best care. She was also so patient in explaining everything to me. I think they may be a little more expensive than other animal hospitals in the area. But honestly, if you figure in the fact that the top-notch care will make your pets healthier, it probably balances out in the long run. Not to mention, the peace of mind in knowing your pets are getting the best medical care you can give them. Our dog is a rescue and can be challenging sometimes. But the staff and Dr. Wooten and other veterinarians at AHNA are just excellent with her. And the reason I am finally getting to this review after intending to for years is that we had an emergency incident with our two-year old cat last week. She knocked over a bottle of vitamin D and I found her in the middle of a pile of capsules on the floor. When I Googled vitamin D and realized it is toxic to cats (and dogs), we rushed her to REACH (it was after hours for AHNA). REACH took good care of her and I am grateful to them. But, I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief the next morning when I transferred my cat over to AHNA. I knew then that she would be receiving the best care and that everything possible would be done to help her recover and be healthy for years and years to come. She ended up spending two days at AHNA after transferring from an overnight at REACH and Dr. Wooten, Dr. Plankenhorn, and the staff were so kind and considerate—taking the time to explain everything to me and even sending photos of my cat since (because of the pandemic) pet parents cannot go in to visit right now. Over the years, I have recommended AHNA to many friends. They are all extremely happy with AHNA also. Thank you to Dr. Wooten, Dr. Plankenhorn, and AHNA for taking such great care of my cat during last week’s ordeal.

We took one of our two dogs to AHNA for the first time yesterday. It was without a doubt the best vet experience we ever had. Even our dog, who can be a "nervous Nelly" felt right at home there. Of course the treats helped, but it was also because the staff was so personable and welcoming. The facility was clean and they only promoted medical options they thought were truly necessary for our dog. The prices for their services and vaccinations are reasonable, too. I own a Dog Boarding business in Pisgah Forest, and I have a trusted Vet in my local town of Brevard. However, they do not offer Laparoscopic Spays, as AHNA does. So, I decided to bring my pup to AHNA (long drive!) to get it done. This was my first experience with AHNA. I had heard and read good things about them, and in doing my research regarding my puppy's spay, I found out more. I am SO glad that I did! This spay procedure is safer and results in you getting to pick up your dog much quicker, if you desire, and the recovery time is easier and shorter. I knew all of that was promised, and that is what happened. What I was surprised by was the incredibly kind Staff and the way they do things there. Every person I encountered was kind, patient, and supportive. They were very loving towards my little dog, and towards me. They were professional and organized. They let me help hold her during her initial exam and blood draw, which was great because she is tiny but very wiggly at first. I always worry that someone will hurt a tiny dog restraining her. Big dogs are so much easier to restrain when you need to, without fear of hurting them. The tiny ones are tricky. Well, I needn't have worried anyway I am sure, but I did not have to worry, because they let me be there. They were in good contact with me via email and messages prior to her scheduled surgery date. On the day that her spay happened, they called me right afterwards to let me know how she was doing, and they let me come and hold her in the Recovery Room until it was time for her to go Home. This was awesome!!! It was great for me and for my dog. After surgery, they are not happy campers, and it meant a lot to be able to be there to soothe her. However, had I been at work, she would have been ok until I picked her up after work. While I was in the recovery room, for over an hour, there was almost always someone IN the room, when they had to leave they were always back quickly, and other people came in periodically to check on the dogs, too. So, she would have been fine. On the way to and from the recovery room, I got to peek into other areas of the Hospital. I could see the staff giving good, loving care to the animals there. I also know a lot about dog crating and facility cleanliness and safety, given my occupation, and everything was super clean, organized, and safe. I was tremendously impressed, and I am hard to impress. The hospital also recently invested around $80,000 in better equipment for doing Ultrasounds. I think that if anything serious ever happened with any of my dogs and AHNA was open (meaning I did not have to go to an after-hours Emergency Vet), I would head straight to AHNA. They seem equipped to deal with anything that may happen. Also I would like to point out that I never had to wait more than a couple of minutes (maybe 5 at most) to be seen for my appointments. It is conveniently located and has plenty of parking. They send email reminders when shots are coming due, well ahead of time, which is a great service that I wish all Vets offered. I constantly encounter dogs trying to board with me who are past due on their vaccines/fecal exams, and the Owners have no idea because they don't keep up with the dates, but also because their Vets do not even send reminders to them that things are coming due! AHNA also sends out very informative newsletters, I suggest you sign up for their email list!

The very nice receptionist told me to bring her right on in and it was 7 o'clock at night. Luckily the Hospital is open until 8:30 which is wonderful. Then you can come see one of their doctors and not have to go to Reach. They are such a caring hospital. I drive a long way to take Maggie to the Hospital but it is so WELL worth it. I've been very pleased with my (many) experiences with the Animal Hospital of North Asheville. I have moved around a lot with my 4 dogs and 1 cat and we have seen dozens of vets. I'm pretty picky about my pet's vet care and not easy to please but the AHNA staff has done a great job meeting my expectations. The doctors we have seen have been great with the human and animal clients and really care about their work. The front desk staff is extremely accommodating and friendly toward my fearful dogs and I love that they have a different entrance for cats. I've even seen them clear the entire lobby for one very scared dog to make his vet trip a little more bearable. I appreciate the hormone diffusers and blankets they have in every exam room. The hospital is always very clean and never smells like there have been dozens of animals in it throughout the day. I have been on multiple occasions to Allen Animal Hospital, All Pets and Haw Creek and AHNA is far superior to them all. While they do not deal with online pharmacies, they make up for it with competitively priced prescriptions and fill them in a timely manner- even when I wait until the last minute. Highly recommend!

I have never had such a wonderful experience with a Veterinarian. I was referred here for a rather extensive dental surgery for my cat. From the very first phone call, I was impressed by the level of dedication and customer service. Dr. Thompson took the time to thoroughly explain my cat's condition and the possible treatments and outcomes. By the end of that first conversation, I had complete trust that Dr. Thompson cared about the well being of Miles almost as much as I did. Have been going here about 2 years with great results. Thursday it had been raining and my dogs had been shut in all day. When I got home in the afternoon they ran happily out to the car—we usually go to the dog park. When we got out at the Animal Hospital of North Asheville I thought tails would droop. But I was wrong! They both headed for the door and wagged at everyone! Liver treats and pheromones and kindness have done their work! By far the best animal hospital in the Asheville area. And no more expensive - despite the fact that they are totally equipped with the latest technology to care for your pets. For example, I dreaded having my cats' teeth cleaned. I feared the expense and doubted the reason why I should do it. After all, other cats I've had over the years haven't had dental care and they seemed to do just fine. Well years ago, in fact, up until recently, vets were cleaning pets teeth with no X-ray equipment, no dedicated vet who specialized in dental work and really were just guessing at whether or not the cats gums and teeth were sound - and that the pet was not experiencing pain from decay and gum disease. And that is STILL the case at every other veterinary practice in this area. Only AHNA has advanced digital x-ray technology, a vet dedicated to dental practice and a facility that is so much better equipped, better staffed and better managed. When one of my cats, who had seemed kind of "grim" for a few years, had her teeth cleaned, the X-rays showed a lot of decayed teeth, plus advanced gum disease. After the cleaning, I received a comprehensive report, including X-ray pictures showing the "before" and "after". My cat is a different cat after the cleaning. I feel guilty that I didn't have this done for her years earlier. That is just ONE example. I've brought all my pets there and in every case, the AHNA owner and staff have gone above and beyond my expectations: they have treated my animals with compassion and the kind of expertise one cannot find in any other practice in this area. I am a huge fan.

I drive from Tennessee (1hour and 25 minutes) to go to AHNA. My animal family have been patients there for over 18 years and I cannot say enough about the practice. The hospital facilities are wonderful - equipped and operated more like a "people" hospital than any veterinary practice I've ever seen.* I have never seen a more "pet centered" practice - they go out of their way to make animals feel comfortable and at ease. They understand animals and their people! There are multiple veterinarians and your vet has the others to discuss difficult issues with. Personally, we see Dr. Amy Plankenhorn and I cannot imagine my pets seeing any other vet. *I help local people with transportation with their pets to their vets so I get to see other animal hospitals that would be much closer for me to go to with my pets. I have also gone to UT Knoxville with pets before I heard about AHNA and Dr. Amy Plankenhorn.

I do not understand folks who expect miracles. No one should give AHNA one star. I have been taking my 2 dogs to An Hosp of N.Ash for a couple of years. We have seen two vets. Both are caring and intelligent. Dr. Plankenhorn is our primary vet. Dr. P has done surgery on Risi's eyelid; THEN worked her into an already FULL schedule when Risi tore out her stitches AND Dr P was going on her first vacation in a couple of years the next day. Bandit has had biopsies on 2 lumps. Every tech who has taken blood work has been skilled. Bandit is calm; Risi trembles & hyperventilates the minute she sees the facility. Staff are positive and supportive of Risi's anxiety. (I was an RN Supr - this anxiety makes blood draws hard). We give Ris a touch of trazadone now pre-appointment. I treated my dogs to dental care last year (it's very expensive anywhere because the dogs need anesthesia) The dental care was timely, well done, caring. Seriously, give a place a chance, One crummy experience could, in part, have something to do with your own vibes that day, huh?

Super kind and caring staff took care of my elderly pomeranian while I was in Asheville for 3 years. She had a lot going on due to having been a puppy mill breeding dog before being rescued, including having to have all of her teeth pulled due to their rotting out. The vets here are very talented and are up front about costs and risks of procedures and surgeries. They are super understanding of personal circumstances (being a broke college student this came up sometimes) and have always worked with me to make sure my dog was taken care of. Set out on a search before moving to these beautiful mountains for my Bulldog, George Burns. Had to find the absolute best vet in the area, and would drive a far distance if I had to for him. But, sent out some e-mails before I moved with my then-year-old George, and found that out of the five answers I received, three of them suggested AHNA. I've been with them ever since. They truly care about me and my Bully, and can't ask for much more than that. My vet, Dr. Amy Plankenhorn, even recommended hydrotherapy for George for a pulled psoas muscle at another facility - that's truly caring for her patient.

We continually are amazed by the quality of care our cat Sophie receives at AHNA. She is always greeted so warmly and quickly moved into a treatment room to minimize any stress from being near other pets in the waiting room. We rarely have to wait to see the doctor and the doctor is always very thorough. When Sophie has had dental care under anesthesia, the doctor has called us after she/he's examined Sophie under anesthesia to tell us what she/he is seeing and needs doing. Then later, she/he calls again to report how everything went. And then she/he calls the next day to see how Sophie is doing. We always get the feeling that all of the AHNA staff love our cat and they go to great lengths to insure her physical and emotional comfort. We appreciate AHNA's cat-dog segregated entrances and waiting areas, adequate staffing to attend to and comfort an animal waiting for or after treatment, and totally cat-dog segregated recovery and boarding areas. These actions significantly minimize the stress Sophie experiences and we are so grateful for that.

Thank you Dr. Duncan, nurses, other staff and receptionists for your kindness, excellence in medical care and love on every visit. Each of you are so appreciated for your care and keeping my very special girl a healthy, happy girl! Dr. Duncan's annual exams are so thorough, yet Abby remains so relaxed and laid back for the exam. As soon as Dr. Duncan receives the results of blood, urine and fecal tests, you are contacted via text, email or phone. AHNA has to be one of top Veterinary Hospitals in the US. I have lived in three states over the years with my pets and AHNA will always be my #1 choice for DVM's, Staff, their thorough exams and follow ups and their gentle, kind, loving manner with pets. At one point, I lived five hours away from Asheville, yet I continued to bring my dog to him for exams, treatment, surgery, etc. I cannot imagine having a pet and not having AHNA, Dr. Duncan, the Staff to treat, diagnose, care for my pet.
