Reviews of Wilmington & Western Railroad
Took the autumn foliage train ride a couple weekends ago. My sister, her daughter and granddaughter were in town to visit my 78 year old mom. The volunteer staff were great. Very accommodating. The views were incredible and the entire experience was enjoyable and memorable. Took lots of photos. Only thing I would change is not to have so much "information and history" through the speakers for the entire ride. Would be nice to just have some peace and quiet to really take in the country side and scenery.
A fun experience for the whole family. It was even wheelchair accessible. We did the autumn leaf special. Where we did the 1.5 hour train ride with a picnic lunch (that we brought). Very picturesque scenes along the route
Nice ride on the Autumn Leaf Special even if the steam engine wasnt running. Train is slower then expected, but nice views. Not much to do for shops at the halfway point. Still worth the trip. Neat to hear about the history on the ride.
Wow! What a nice experience. We took the diesel train in the morning in the summer. It was raining at first but quit shortly before the trip. Everyone was so accommodating with our wheelchair access. Yes, you can take a wheelchair. They move a platform to the doorway and raise you up. The windows are half open and the breeze was welcoming. You take a nice paced trip down the tracks while getting a historical experience of the area and times. The trip was an hour and a half in all. You have the choice of getting off and having a 30 minute picnic at picnic tables by the water or you can stay on and ride a bit further. We chose to stay on. Once the trip has gone the distance they stop and go in reverse back to Greenback Station. The seatbacks also change so you don't have to face the wrong direction. There are other train experiences just check out the website for details. It is so relaxing and peaceful, at least that was our experience. My 3 year old grandson fell asleep towards the end. They have a gift shop that doesn't disappoint if you want a souvenir. Don't forget to pickup the train schedule because on the other side is the history. We were stopped and not moving when I took the photo out the window, never put anything out the window while in motion. Enjoy your trip!
Love taking the night train ride to see the Christmas lights out along the way. 1 hour ride. Dress warm, it's cold out there. The train is all decorated up
The ride with Santa was a lot of fun for the kids. The classic train cars were really neat, and the views were amazing. Staff was great.
Awesome train ride, Great scenery.
Great Special events. Call ahead or make reservations. Christmas lights train rides sell out quick.
It was a leisurely ride on the old steam engine. The seat backs can be changed for the ride back so you can sit across from your party or change over to face the other direction. The cabins were a touch stuffy - fans would have been nice.
This was a great experience. We went for the holiday light express. The train was gorgeous outside and seating was comfortable inside. I do wish there were more lighted houses during the ride, but that's not the fault of the train. I can imagine the fall ride would be beautiful with all the woods this track goes through.
Really enjoyable train ride experience for the whole family. Be sure to check their schedule online and consider booking one if the seasonal rides in advance as they sell out quickly. It was nice to enjoy the fresh air while riding on a restored passenger car through the historic Brandywine area.
We went on the Santa train ride, and it was lovely! The conductor for our car took a minute to talk with each child as he punched the tickets, one of the conductors came through to lead Christmas songs twice to keep the children entertained, and they had one of the best Santas that I've ever seen. He thoughtfully engaged with each child without making anyone feel rushed, and he gave each kid a chocolate lollipop.
I absolutely recommend this to families with young children.
We rode the Holiday Lights train, and it was very enjoyable. Reasonably priced. To add that they were very accommodating to us. We had purchased tickets for a Friday evening. However, the weather was downright frigid that night, and they cheerfully rescheduled us for another time a few days later. Only gripe was the signs inside the coach for seat numbers were very small and difficult to read. I'm sure they are trying to keep the original equipment.
Would go again.
Fun experience on an old railroad car built in 1915 to see the fall foliage.
Near experience for sure. Very cool train and the quality is cool to see.
The tickets said you would get off at a picnic area but you get the option to stay on the train. We prepared a snack so got off but would have stayed on otherwise.
The employees and volunteers are all absolutely amazing (friendly) and passionate about you having a great time! Great hospitality, an honest business, and memorable experiences! This is surely a hidden gem in the area but they’ve earned my business tenfold!
A nice set of restored train cars taking a slow tourist train ride from the Wilmington area to Hokessin. Informative and friendly volunteers share information along the scenic route. Seats are comfortable and clean.
Good way to spend a couple hours with kids for sure.
Im sure you will see many reviews and overall i think if you are looking for something to do with the children you should be ok. it was not a amazing light show but there was definitely some things to see. The train itself was decorated very nicely and the ability to BYOB was also really appreciated. The expense and the old smell of the train are the only 2 critiques but the smell you get used to and maybe you could find tickets at a discount somewhere. Again it was a experience and something different to share with friend and family.
Took my grandson for Christmas time. People were actually singing on the train. I loved it.
A very enjoyable ride. They have lots of fall foliage and holiday rides. It took 1 hour to ride to Hockessin and then we had 1/2 hour to walk around before our trip back.
2 1/2 hour roundtrip to Hockesin was a veritable history lesson about the region and the railroad. Not being from this area it was very informative without boring you to tears. Tree colors were just beginning to change so around Halloween, it should be spectacular! Nice birthday gift for my wife from my daughter.
Great piece of history. The train ride was great and the volunteers did a great job interacting and sharing with us.
Was a wonderful Father's Day trip. It was a joy all the way from my 81yo grand father, all the way to our 2 kids. Highly Recommend!
Been coming here for years and love the tradition. Best service and very festive experience. I hope the railroad continues this tradition for years to come.
Enjoyed autumn train journey today ! .It’s worth taking autumn special ride.Though most of the colors got changed and fallen off due to heavy winds. love the rock creek 25 min picnic spot nice with fall colors and waterfall. We took open air one it’s pretty cool outside it’s better to sit inside or get some throws & gloves to cover up yourself.Overall Experience was wonderful. Guided tour on the train was very informative .
Went on the Easter bunny train 🚂 🐇🐰 ride with the kids which only happens two weekends in April; the kids had fun for the first 30 mins and then became a bit restless 😬 the easter bunny passed out some local chocolate 🍫 but beyond that they didn't have other activities for them to partake in. The trip was 1.5 hrs and the bathroom was told to be for emergencies only... Keep that in mind! Kids had fun in general but doubt I would do this again...
Great scenic fall view where you get to see some small waterfalls, rocks, and small towns. It's an audio tour so you get to know about the spots you pass through during the ride.
Very cute lil Railroad with themed events and Parlor Car rentals. Really good time for your group. Kids absolutely LOVE it!
What a wonderful ride. Conductors and staff are so friendly. Beautiful lunch spot. What a wonderful day
I was invited to a wedding at this facility. What a great experience on the train. We had a meal prepared for us and it was fantastic. The staff on the train is very courteous and friendly. The train took us on a tour though wooded areas that at times passed a beautiful creek. A great total experience.
Train looked beautiful! Christmas music plays as you take your 45 minute ride. Some houses did decorate but I was surprised how many didn't. One lady was seen from a window waving! How sweet. Unfortunately it was so hot in the cars that the windows steamed up and it was hard to see out them. We did enjoy our ride and it is all done by volunteers. The station had clean, modern bathrooms and a snack bar that was reasonably priced. Definitely put me in the holiday spirt!
We had a great time viewing the fall foliage from the train ride. The conductors were nice and helpful, the view was beautiful. It was a nice ride through the brandywine valley
Aaaaall abooooard!!!! That's the call for the train to start moving!!! Made it just on time for the 11 am ride (the last one during the week days) $10 for adult. It's about a 50min ride through the creeks and forests, too bad you cant get down from the train and explore nature. The Station where you buy the tickets do not have food for sale nor drinks or snacks (at least on week days) so make sure you take your own!! Other than that, I think it's a great way to escape the busy life and realize there are hidden treasures in the middle of this concrete jungle we call city!!
Such a great experience for the kids! We visited during the Autumn leaf special, it was a beautiful ride. The narration during the trip was informative and a great background to the history of the Wilmington and Western. I'm thankful for the volunteers that keep this train running, this was a great memory for my family!
Such a fun time on the railroad! We found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating, the train very clean and everything in good repair. This is a place to take kids, or the whole family. You can stop and have a picnic halfway through in a beautiful grove.
Nice ride through wooded scenery behind a tough 0-6-0. Will do it again!
A fun way to spend an afternoon. Affordable especially when they have special pricing.
Only had two things they could improve on.
- it was very hard to buy tickets. The web site was acting up. On the morning we wanted to go, the site showed 32 tickets left but the "buy" button was greyed out. I called and apparently nobody answers the phone on weekends (when the trains run). I took a huge risk driving there because it may gave been sold out. The woman at the ticket desk was very nice. They had tickets but only for the open air car (which we wanted anyway). She wasnt able to explain why the site was acting up.
- do not take the open air car if you have a big allergy or fear of bees. A family member suddenly found a bee stinging her arm, and we didn't see any buzzing around. Apparently it's common enough they keep beesting first aid in the car. The man working in the car explained the train stirs them up. I guess when it slows down enough at certain times and the vibration irritates bees in nests under the track, some come out looking to attack.
Kudos to them for keeping first aid supplies in the car.
Ride was interesting with the loudspeaker offering a little history lesson
It was fun. I'd go back. We'd go more often if our budget allowed.
What a fun train ride! The train conductors & engineers allows the kids to visit the engine. Great historic tour through the woods. Picnic spot at Mt. Cuba Meteor (30 minutes if you want to get off and have a picnic).
Good ride not a whole lot to see but woods. If your lucky will see a deer or squirrel. Other than that enjoy the ride.
Its amazing steam engine train ride, It is a round trip from Wilmington to Hockesin and Hockesin back to Wilmington. Fall is the best time to enjoy this ride.Train will pass through beautiful views . Train will stop for 30 mins at one beautiful location where you can eat food you are carrying with you and roam around.Kids will love it. You can also book a coach to celebrate special occasions.
This railroad station is beautiful and they really do a great job at giving you a great train experience. We went on the holiday light train ride and it was such a nice time. The train is heated and they had music. The station is clean and there are restrooms. I definitely will be checking out the other train ride experiences they have.
This was an awesome experience for our family, my children loved it. The staff that we had were super friendly and helpful. I would recommend this for any family or couple to do for Christmas, we plan to go back for their valentine's day dinner as well.
Helpful and friendly volunteers staff that were very knowledgable. The conductor shared interesting facts about what we were seeing. If you ride all the way to the end you see abandoned factories. The picnic are was pretty and next to the water.
This was my first visit but certainly not the last to this railroad. The train and cars were beautifully decorated for the Holidays I certainly enjoyed my train ride.
Really nice train ride. Santa was great. We enjoyed the whole ordeal. Thank you
Nice ride to relax and enjoy the scenery. Would definitely go again!
Wonderful ride through Brandywine area to see the Christmas Lights.
Great experience for the family. We did the Santa Claus Express and the kids loved it. They were at 30% capacity with local restrictions so there was a ton of space.
Beautiful unique experience! All volunteers here. Not an expensive family adventure!
Nice ride very scenic.. inexpensive we did the easter trip with 3 toddlers.
Great ride on a historic 1907 steam engine! Friendly crew and run with true pride!
We had a great time on the train. The crew was very friendly and helpful.
Only giving this 3 starts because the staff was friendly and were proactive with ensuring everyone was having a good experience. In all honesty, I don’t really think there was anything scenic or adventurous about the train ride; All I saw were nothing but trees and small creeks. Maybe this might be a better journey for the locals but as someone who traveled over 2 hours just for this, I felt like that it was a complete waste of time.
The WWRR is a little gem from days gone by. It offers a variety trips that cater to every age, from themed trips with Santa, Princesses and Super Heros! And adult trips, such as dinner trains, and our All Time Favorite, the Beers on Board, with local breweries introducing their special Brews, all while enjoying friends, laughter and the outstanding views of the Brandywine Valley. We need more adult excursions so we can spread the word about the History of this Railroad and the attractions that have brought generations to the area! Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who bring this little piece of Delaware history alive for the education and entertainment for all to enjoy!
The locomotives and Pullman cars are meticulously maintained and manned by very friendly volunteers. There is a little gift shop and a lot of room in the train station to wait to board the trains, especially important in inclement or hot summer weather. Boarding the cars would be difficult for someone with impaired mobility because the steps up are steep and the first step is quite a reach, even with a step stool for assistance. I booked a steam engine trip, but the train was pulled by their diesel locomotive. Different esthetic, for sure, but once we boarded the train, the engine did not matter. The Pullman cars are not air conditioned, but all the windows were open for ventilation, and it was generally comfortable on a warm summer’s day. Children sensitive to loud noises will not appreciate the loud train whistle which blows at every street crossing. Our train passed through Yorklyn and went as far as Hockessin (which I think is the farthest point traversed by the Delaware and Western RR.) I’d estimate that it was a ten-mile trip which we made in about one hour. The scenery was unimpressive: although there were some pleasant wooded areas, rural streams and ponds, and two passages cut through steep rock walls, most of the excursion was through woods, some residential areas, and past some decrepit and abandoned industrial buildings. We disembarked in Hockessin for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the engineers moved the locomotive to the other end of the train for the return trip to Wilmington. I did not realize that the outward bound trip was up a very slight grade but it was evident on the return trip because the brakes were squealing on the train cars through most of the trip back, which took about 45 minutes instead of the hour it took to get to Hockessin.
We went to the Civil War skirmish and really enjoyed it. The volunteers do a great job and I recommend the railroad trip for all. The ride goes through some very beautiful scenery too.
A wonderful, perfect fall afternoon. Very special volunteers and narrator made it perfect.
Perfect Father's day picnic trip. Nice leisurely train ride along the Brandywine Park and Red Clay Creek, and then a 30mins stop for picnic. The experience was incredible. My 3yr old absolutely loved it. The train is ran by a volunteer crew and they were extremely pleasant and helpful. I enjoyed every second of the trip.
Always a great ride the staff is awsome
1st time visiting, best experience for the kids!
Scenery was great and the narration was excellent. Was disappointed that it was pulled by a diesel instead of the steam engine.
Really nice trip for the kids. Slow train ride on an old steam engine, Santa took his time on the visit. Family enjoyed being together. Reasonable priced.
If you're from DE and haven't been here, you've been missing out! If you're not from here you'll love it. Buy your tickets online and arrive early. Don't forget to check out the little museum!
Really fun time for the kids to ride an old railroad. Don't miss the Santa or the lights train around the holidays. Staff is great. Surprisingly comfortable ride.
Great experience for families.
Super friendly staff and service
We were very excited for the Light Train ride. It was our first. The gift shop was cute and we bought an ornament. The people working/volunteering at the railroad were very friendly and nice. The issue I had was that the mask policy enforced by the TSA was not held by the conductors. There were people unmasked on the ride, eating and coughing and no one said a thing. I was uncomfortable the whole ride.
Wonderful family treat. The train ride was very enjoyable. The train was decked out with pots of lights and garlands for the holidays. What fun!!
What a fun way to spend an afternoon, and you can't beat the price of tickets! We took their father's day ride to Mt Cuba and back and had a great time.
Train cars are cold, they also smell a bit like cannabis. The music cut off around half way through the Christmas ride and even though there was a mask mandate there were a few people on my ride that were not asked to wear any face coverings.
However, it is a charming little ride, and it is worth 16 per person. Staff seemed kind.
It is really nice experience for the family and young kids, that doesn't take most of your day. Goes around northwest part of Delaware, near Hockessin neighborhood. The train is 1:30 hour/minute ride including 30 minute stop for a sit-down snack. Throughout the ride they tell you a brief history about the area and the staff are very nice. They have several events posted on their website for pricing and specials. Definitely recommend it.
Check for clear weather before booking.
We had a wonderful time this afternoon, part of our grandson's 3rd birthday party, riding through lovely countryside in the caboose. There's an opportunity to get off at a picnic site that we took advantage of and the train picks you up on the way back. A special thanks to the volunteers who run this. My husband has some difficulty walking and the staff were so patient, kind and helpful. They have so much knowledge and are quite happy to answer any questions. You can tell they love what they do. Highly recommended.
Very nice train ride. The volunteer conductors were so friendly and helpful. Will definitely go back again.
Had a great time doing this with my wife and 10 yr old son. Definitely recommend. Awesome way to spend 2 hours on a beautiful day! It's worth taking the ride during different times of the year. The Christmas ride is especially cool. Haven't done one in the fall yet but will this year! Welll worth supporting this bit of living history.
Love this train! Been riding the rails for over 30 years and delighted to share the ride with my children now.
Always fun at any of the seasonal activities and an affordable outing for the family too. Thank you!
Great time, even the rain couldn't stop that. There was commentary part of the way that detailed lots of history and sites. Awesome job to the staff. We will be back!
The train ride was very nice and surreal. The autumn colors and the views were stunning.
We loved it. Loved the scenic ride thru Wilmington. Very relaxing. The steam train was in excellent condition. The staff was very friendly and provided interesting history of the steam train.
Excellent volunteer run railroad. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. 10/10.
One of the BEST train rides I've ever been on! (And I worked for 2 different tourist railroads over 10 years.) We too the Mt.. Cuba Meteor. It was very relaxing, had BEAUTIFUL scenery with fascinating history and ran by great volunteers and staff. I highly recommend WWRR! We will be back for sure!
Fun ride. Great for all ages.
Very nice ride.. My 81 year old mother and 8 year old granddaughter really enjoyed the experience. As did I.
Took the Christmas train ride with our young grandchildren and they loved it. It's just the right amount of time for young minds and plenty to see.
We rented the caboose and brought our own food. This made the trip much easier since the kids could move around.
I see they did a great job with helping disables. I heard majority are volunteers. Thanks for these kind hearted people☺️
There was storm on the way back so we did not take a break. Missed the opportunity to visit the small town.
Fantastic! We had a blast. The staff is friendly and courteous. Engineers were very kind and let us pose for pictures with them as well as letting my son see the inside of the locomotive. Train ride is a great length for a tourist railroad. The station has a small gift store, bathrooms and a snack bar. No frills, just trains. The way we like it.
Took my Grandkids on the Pirates and Pixies train
ride this past Sunday-April 25. The actors that
portrayed the Pirates and Pixies were wonderful
with the children. Very attentive and included the
children in all activities. They were very good
actors and actresses! I give their performances a
thumbs up! Recommend this train ride to all!
Thank you again Pirates and Pixies for giving my
Grandchildren a memorable day! 👍
We had a great time on the Santa train.
We loved our visit here. My son was a huge fan of the train. The views along the ride are spectacular. I would love to come back again. Maybe in the fall or at Christmas for one of the themed rides. Keep up the good work.
A relaxing saturday afternoon. Clean facilities, seems well managed.
Love the old train, great experience for the kids and Lotsa different Disney characters! My granddaughter was living a dream.
This place is run by volunteers and they do a great job at it. It was a lovely day to do a scenic ride and it's very family friendly. Well worth the price!
Great train ride !
Always a great time on the train!
Very fun and festive train ride for the entire family to do! The houses you pass on the train ride used to decorate to the nines for the Christmas train ride and now people are not decorating as much. It's still very fun and entertaining for the kids! They have a cute little gift shop to go into. Something enjoyable for everyone!
Clean, super friendly staff, wish the route was longer.
Gorgeous scenery along the tracks.
Always have an amazing time. My kids absolutely love going here. Easter bunny and Santa trains are our favorite.
I have to say. This place is a gem. We took our two young daughters on the Santa express ride and it was fun for the kids, but still magical for the parents too. I love anything old fashioned and even in the traditional cabin not first class car, it was very pleasent and fun. I truly recommend this for everyone. I hope to try out some of the other optioned rides in the future.❤️
The Wilmington & Western Railroad is a major hallmark attraction of Wilmington, Delaware and a wonderful site for families and friends to visit.
In May Of 2021, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a wonderful tour on the steam powered locomotive that is operated by the Wilmington & Western Railroad.
The staff and the train crew were wonderfully accommodating, and treated us with great kindness throughout our trip.
During our journey on the locomotive, both my wife and I viewed and took great pictures of the beautiful countryside of Wilmington. Our tour narrator on the train discussed the immense history of Delaware, its notable pioneers and settlers and the major industries that developed in the 19th Century Delaware, such as the gun powder and paper mills.
My wife and I highly recommend for all travelers, both domestic and international, visit and take a tour on this impressive and comfortable locomotive. We strongly believe that you’ll find your ride very entertaining and educational, just like we did!!!
Awesome!!
Nice experience for a little kid. The super heroes were dressed well. Though it’s just a train ride of 30 minutes one way and same duration back... it’s worth taking once if not more. Loved the train experience and my 4 year old was excited to see all her superheroes taking picture with her. Loved it.
Last weekend we took our nieces and nephews on the caboose. Nine birthdays celebrated!!! We would like to thank Dave, Trainman, Bruce Brakeman and Jack Assistant Brakeman for a great trip. Everyone had a great time, especially the return trip when we were the lead car!! Thank you for some amazing family memories!!!
Great place to take the kids. Scenery
We had a fabulous time with our two little girls, parents and siblings. Everyone thought it was such a great view and nice to sit, chat, and enjoy the ride. Kids thought it was so fun and they even got to meet Santa.
A very cool thing to do around the holidays! I Also loved learning about the history of the railroad! I wish more people living along the train tracks had decorated their homes/yards. The ones we saw were creative and very beautiful. I just expected to see a few more. But, aside from that... I'd definitely recommend to anyone. All age appropriate. BYOF. Moderate pricing. Ample parking!
It was a fun experience, thank goodness it was snowing during our ride. That really make the ride much more enjoyable/memorable. The scenery was okay but it seemed like barely any of the houses participated in setting up lights. Seating was okay.
Did the Christmas ride for the kids. It was cool for them. Decent scenery on the ride. We had a group so we put the seats facing each other. Very tight and uncomfortable that way. On the trip back we had all seats facing one way and much more leg room.
Always a great experience with it never let you down. With everything going on we all must appreciate what they do. Keep up the great work . Will be down soon for the ride.
It is amazing! Must see the Christmas train n share the holiday spirit..
A great relaxing day with family friendly fun. Wonderful staff and volunteers who like to share their knowledge.
Amazing to see old technology still in use and learn more about American history. Beautiful scenery and fun performances from the actors.
Good first time experience. My sone loved this Christmas rail.
A fun evening at the train station to take a ride
Had a great time here. How often do you get to ride in a train pulled by a old steam engine locomotive? The trip through the countryside was lovely. Not much to see but woods, but sightseeing was less a reason for the ride then being on a old fashioned train. The station (gift shop) was amazing. Anything a train lover wants they had. Books, pictures, T shirts, etc were all there. The price for the trip was reasonable, the coach ride was comfortable (as much as a 75 year old coach could be I guess) and all the riders were enjoying the feeling of going back to a simpler time. Only thing I would change is make a longer stopover at the midpoint and then give the riders a better choice of places to eat andgo to the restroom. There was only a few places three and they were All packed with riders. All in all though, a very enjoyable few hours.
Great experience autum train ride was exceptional
The ride was very nice with some very neat houses decorated for Christmas. My grandsons enjoyed the trip.
I love it! It isn't ALWAYS a steam engine that pushes things around, check the event page, and it isn't year-round, but it is incredibly scenic, a lot of fun. Pack your own food, bring cash for food, pack a camera, because it's incredibly scenic.
It's run by volunteers, most of whom are there because they love the history of the area and are locals, and the museum is first-rate for such a small organization. I took a diesel train, and it was a lot of fun! There are a lot of kids underfoot, and the whistle can grate on the ears, but it's all part of the experience.
Great unique place to plan a weekend around
What a fantastic train experience! There's a lot of history and nostalgia to be enjoyed by taking a ride on one of their tours. Amazingly maintained equipment and just plain fun, you can't go wrong no matter your age or gender. Tranquil, serene and a great way to escape from the fast-paced world...if even only for a few hours.
While enjoying the Princess Express excursion of the Wilmington & Western Railroad, we were amazed by the grace and friendliness of the Princesses. I don't know that their official characters can be used so we will call them by their description. Beauty greeted us at the station with smile. She was very regal and read a story to the children. The young Ice Princess was perfectly played. Super friendly. She got down and spent time with each child. Once back at the station, there was more time for the children to interact.
A wonderful time. If you are thinking about booking, go for it.
Great train ride for my 4yr old grandson. He loved when the train blew the whistle and when the train crossed the roads and people were waving at everyone on the train from their cars ( wish it was a longer ride) Definitely will be going back 💯 …
Super fun, I went when they had the train decorated with lights for Christmas and it was a great experience. I want to go back during a ride during the day as well. All the folks who work here were super friendly.
A very nice rolling history lesson. Enjoyed it very much.
A magical and charming Holiday Light Express train ride! It was one of those experiences that just makes you feel good! We will be coming back every year and can't wait to try some of the other special events aboard the Wilmington & Western Railroad.
Great place. Great people. Great train and expeditions. Not always a steam engine though, just make sure that the steam engines running if that's what you want. The diesel was nice also but certainly not a steamer.
I didn't realize there was a train basically in my backyard. I took my husband on a surprise 1.5 hour train ride. He really enjoyed it. It was something he had always wanted to do. We rode in the open air car. We are definitely going back during the changing of the leaves.
Great atmosphere and ride, but overpriced and with not-too-impressive food. Having said that, it's one of those things that you have to do as t least once, and I find it hard to knock anything that is staffed by dedicated volunteers. I went with my wife on the Valentine's Day ride, and my one regret is that it was too dark to really as appreciate the scenery.
Simply awesome and beautiful. Held birthday party in caboose ride for grandson. The crew and staff were outstanding and the ride was spectacular. What a wonderful experience.
Remarkable excursion on the train. Wonderful folks that volunteer there. Great time had by all.
Very nice adventure through history!!
Fun and colourful day on RR. Very informative too
Nice ride. Seats fold forwards and backwards for ride back. Train decorations at night are beautiful. However the Houses that participate in the lighting on the Train Trail have declined. More rocks and dead Marsh land than actual illuminated decorations.
We went for the Holiday Lights Express and we loved the train cars themselves, covered in over 1000 lights. The trail we followed however, did not provide as many light displays as we'd believed there would be. Cute and reasonably priced gift shop!
Fun place to enjoy your inner child. Trains depart promptly and are not wildly entertaining but the kids seem to enjoy the magic. Save time to view the museum to learn and reconnect with the history of the RR and surrounding community. Make this place a family tradition.
Very nice holiday experience for the family, was happy that a number of people put out lights but thought there would be a little more. They should do holiday brews on board but I didnt see any adult nights for the christmas season on the schedule. Cant wait to go back!
Great for 9 year old or younger. Kids love trains.... Just seeing there excitement is worth the trip
Upgraded to the open air car, but weren't expecting to be in a flatbed with no roof. Made the ride standout from other rides and the views were unobstructed.
For much of the 19th century, the Wilmington & Western Railway was a significant driver for Delaware’s economy. But since the mid-‘60s, it’s been dedicated to providing visitors and locals a fun and educational way to see the state from a unique perspective.
Train tours are inexpensive, last just a few hours, and include narration from a knowledgeable local, whose unique insights into the area’s history, economy, and culture might be missed otherwise.
The railway’s staff members offer a variety of regularly scheduled programs and special events throughout the year, especially during the summer months and holiday season.
This was a fun train ride we took with our grandkids December 1st. The train cars are decorated for the holidays. They have a St. Nick walking about for "take your own photos."
Took my 12 year old for the Civil War Skirmish, and overall, it was pretty cool. The staff on the train were courteous & were really into civil war history. The guys doing the battle reenactment were excellent, no doubt the best part. What wasn't cool was that it was billed as a 2 1/4 hour round trip excursion, when it ended up being 1 1/2 hours, with 20 mins of it spent at a picnic area. So that sucked. Def glad we did the open air car, and def not something to take small children to. Too scary for them.
Short ride but worth it. It was cool to see the decorated houses around Christmas time.
Such a beautiful, relaxing ride. Everyone is so nice and helpful. Engine look's great and the car's are always very clean. We always enjoy the ride 🚂🛤 …
I really loved this experience. It was the first year me and my husband decided to do the christmas train with santa. They loved it. I loved the santa you all had he was very personable and great with the children. My whole family enjoyed the experience. We will definitely be planning on doing this again as a tradition. 😊 …
Nice ride, all volunteer staff, ride was about 1/2 hour.
Super cute train ride with xmas lights.
So nice to ride in the historic cars!
Nice historic rail trip. OK scenery you spend a lot of times in rock cuts and in valleys. Nice trip for kids, not too long. Very friendly volunteer staff that are very knowledgeable about the rail line.
Every year we go to the see the Christmas lights with the kids. Everyone is super friendly and it's all ran by volunteers. These people maintain this place all on their own spare time, no one is paid for this. That's dedication!
What a great time ,lovely staff, stunning scenery.
This is the second time my kids and I have rode the train with the Easter Bunny. It was magical, probably the best day of my son's life. To think, this operation is run entirely by volunteers because they love trains and making kids (big and small) happy. AND, it's a piece of history. Even the seats are the original seats. If you haven't experienced this, you should. The scenery is beautiful, it's a lovely ride.
Nice staff and wonderful ride through the countryside.
There was a question about the "cola gandola". Saw a photo someone uploaded but didn't see it on my visit. So don't know if it's available. Please call them directly for more info.
Rode the christmas train. Was so much fun. Will do again with family next year. Make reservations early. They sell out quick.
Wonderful Holiday Family experience.
Great experience for kids and adults
Extremely relaxing activity, and very affordable
Beautiful, well preserved train interior. Friendly, enthusiastic and informative guards. Lovely scenic route. The gift shop is really good!
Cool train ride on a rainy Summer day. Drove 90 minutes to get here and did not regret it. If you love trains you will love the 45 minutes scenic train ride through the woods.
Great day for the family on the Santa Express. Our five year old had a great time and not that expensive. We would recommend this trip for the train lover in your family.
A wonderful holiday light train ride to celebrate the season. Christmas music plays onboard while you Chug-Chug thru the trees and see beautiful lights and decorations that hones habe displayed. A 45-minute is perfect for little ones who get restless. An excellent memory made for young and old!
Cool old trains and a great family activity. We did the holiday lights and the kids loved it. A nice quick activity and a wonderful asset to the community.
Had an excellent fourth of July on the excursion. We had a nighttime ride to see the firework's and an hour back. Very relaxing and such a nice trip
This tourist railroad is a phenomenal day trip. Scenery always changes, never know what nature you will see on your trip. Try to catch a Hockessin run for a little longer adventure. The steam engines don't always run, but when they do...it's a one of a kind treat.
Fun excursion for the entire family. Always facinating and educational to take a train ride. Plus, you get to see the local area from a completely different perspective. Gift and Snack shops complete the experience.
Today was A Blessed Mother's Day experience for my Mother. It was a soothing ride appreciating Delawares History, and Gods landscapes, all the staff was very caring and personable, the culinary staff were exceptional,(food was delectable) the Trainmen were caring about there cargo I'm already planning the next event...God Bless

Beautiful fall ride!! The foilage is breathtaking and I personally enjoyed the historical aspect of the ride. I learned alot about the history of the area and truly enjoyed the ride!!! I just wish it was longer!!
My daughter loved the train ride. It was nice. Wish more of the homes were decorated but still lovely ride with my kid.
Fun railroad, especially is your child likes trains. However, we were kind of disappointed in the amount of lights on the holiday lights express. I'm sure we'll try a different experience though soon.
I took my great grandson and he just loved it! The conductors are friendly and informative. It is a nice ride
Fun trip savoring some Delaware history with family.
My 4 yr old brother and his friend loved it. Great for all ages. Relaxing train ride with great scenery.

Can't write enough about how much I love them. We've talked so many rides over the years. My son loves the Easter Bunny train every year.
Old timey fun and atmosphere
this is a really nice outing for both young and old. the train travels along the red clay creek up to Mt Cuba and back through Yorklyn. a little bit of history is told and beautiful scenery.
My wife and I ride the train every year on our anniversary and it never disappoints. This was our 5th trip and it was just as fun as the first
Haven't rode the train but chased it several times. Beautifully maintained Engine #98 provides weekend service up the Red Clay Creek Valley. Destinations include Mount Cuba, Ashland & occasionally Hockessin. Very scenic...you wouldn't think you were just a few miles from Wimington.
If you havent been here, your missing a lot. Worth the trip, enjoy the ride back in time. Great place to have all kinds of events. Something for everyone.
Fantastic night and ride.
First visit here with our 18 month old. We had a wonderful time! Would highly recommend for any family with a train crazy kid.
It was cute it would have been a bit nicer if more lights lit up on trail.

It was a nice relaxing ride, but some of the volunteers didn't look overly enthused about being there. Outside that, it was awesome.
Very nice outing with the grand-kids. Not too long and stopped for lunch (which you bring). There are a couple train ride options. We chose the shorter.
This was a great birthday celebration
Riding in the caboose was private & fun for 2yr old to 82 yr old. Loved it.
Nice train ride in PA.

Train ride to see Christmas lights would have been more enjoyable if very small children had not let them run around.
Wonderful railroad ride. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Great fun for the family of all ages.
Very enjoyable train ride. Packed a lunch and made a day of it.
Such a magical experience for all ages!
