Reviews of Seward Community Co-op - Franklin Store
Kado
EDIT: I'm returning a year later to remove 1 star. I was mischarged for bulk items 3 times in the past few weeks, and I'm sure there have been many more times that I haven't caught it. Always ask for a receipt and check it when you get home.
I only buy bulk spices/seeds here, but it's worth the trip just for those. Good selection, short lines, way cheaper than co-ops in far south Minneapolis/the suburbs. In my opinion, the produce is too expensive to buy, but luckily United Noodle is nearby with all the fresh fruits and veggies I need.

Beautiful the presentation of the food the produce everything I like It fabulous customer service was very nice overall I give it all up start
Adam Pellegrini
Loved the shopping experience at Seward! Great produce and fresh coffee beans. Staff are super nice too—lily was incredibly helpful talking me through the different produce!
Greg Eastlund
High quality, organic foods. Busy place with limited parking but well worth it.
David Wrobleski
I’ve been an owner for over five years and it has been well worth it. They are exceptional in their meat and produce. Many selections are very affordable, especially their awesome bulk sections. I feel better spending my money here with local farms than anywhere else. We are lucky to have Seward Coop.
Janis Froehlig
The sales make a substantial dent in my grocery budget. Given the walkable locations for local neighborhoods who need more readily accessible produce, which is excellent here, I'm more than happy to be a member who shops here. I'm grateful for the die-hard work of the employees and board members. It's not about a perfect retail experience, it's about co-op. I love that.
Leilah Luna
This is my go-to place for lunch! Lots of great hot and cold options and reasonably priced! You can also get groceries here, though those are more pricey compared to other stores. But the vibes are great, the produce is excellent, and the friendly workers do a great job sanitizing in-between customers, and only allowing a certain amount of people in at a time.
Dominick Briggs
A nice little grocery store with a very wide selection of goods and plenty of parking. Specifically their cheese selection is IMMENSE. 🧀
The only reason this review isn't five stars is because I learned from a employee that some of their donations were going to some shady and bad businesses. The employee said they talked about it internally, but since I still haven't heard anything more, I'm assuming that's still the case.
Jeffrey Harrison
Seward Coop always has high quality products and friendly service. Turtle cheesecake and fresh oatmeal cookies are my favorite deserts and, their hot foods can't be beat for nutrition, flavor and convenience. Discovered they carry the elusive purple potato last week. Hard to go wrong shopping here.
Andrew Ervin
As good as it gets for produce - the most beautiful array of vegetables and fruit that I have found. Prices are higher than traditional grocery stores, but the high quality is well worth it. Good selection of other items. Some of the best specialty ice creams to be found. Outstanding salad bar. Very good sandwiches made to order (but be aware that there can be a wait). Same is true for their fruit and juice smoothies. This can be a very busy place on a Saturday - allow time to wait at the cash register. The seating area can be quite over run on a weekend - no guarantee of a place to sit. Parking lot is too small for this busy operation, requiring staff to direct traffic at the busiest of times.
Christopher Evans
Could only be better if it was where i live, which is far away.
A great place to shop if you are visiting town.
Taylor Matysik
Probably my favorite place in my neighborhood. There isn't much to not like. The produce here is locally sourced (where possible), cost is fair if not amazingly affordable, staff is friendly and helpful, the space is clean and orderly, they get daily fresh bread from local bakers, and they have a great butcher and deli. Such a happy and welcoming place that is member owned and community focused. A business model others can follow. Love Seward, my girlfriend and I are members!
Tom Guelcher
One of my favorite deli's in the Twin Cities. Every chicken dish is amazing, and their mustard pork is out of this world. They have a really nice dining facility, the whole store is neat and clean and the cashiers are always very friendly. They have a pretty good selection of food but I do have to say they are quite expensive as most coops are, and the no left turn out of the parking lot ( in order to respect their neighbors) is a little bothersome for me since going right adds 5-7 minutes on my commute back to work.
David Dawis
Great atmosphere! Great selection of co-op goods, free-trade, and local produce. Friendly and helpful staff. My only caveat is a slightly stressful parking lot at peak hours. People sometimes don't pay attention to the traffic flow arrows and forget their usual Minnesotan courtesy when racing for the one open spot. I recommend going on off-hours, if possible.
Emily Beck
I was in the area recently and decided to drop in and see what this place was all about and I was blown away! Some of the items were a little more expensive than other places, but the bulk section was very reasonable! I was bummed that I didn't have any of my own containers with me, but I was excited to see that they offered compostable bags! I was also able to find some organic vegetables that I haven't been able to find anywhere else. Overall, I'd highly recommend! I only wish I lived closer!
Carlos Rivera
Kind of pricey, but great place to do groceries, and good people. Their awesome meat selection (love their Mediterranean lamb patties, chicken sausages, etc!), and varied selection of organic grocery items make it worth my occasional visit.
Garrett Peterson
Great produce selection, deli counter, cheeses, hot food bar, and all your essential grocery items (and pretty good selection of beauty products, health, and supplements). It's definitely not as cheap as Cub, but the coop generally stocks organic and ethically sourced goods, as much as possible. It's a community-owned coop. Anyone can purchase a share which entitles you to quarterly discounts, an end of year dividend (if the store is profitable) and a vote in board elections. Also the workers are finally unionizing; another plus.

I love the store. Always well staffed with friendly helpful faces.
But the days of old school cool co-ops are long gone.
I remember when co-ops were about buying mass quantities in bulk as a group (read cooperative) to save money.
The current "Co-op" motto may as well be a Whole Foods- price things as high as the market will bear.
The modern day food co-op has become nothing more than another corporate machine, hungry for the almighty dollar....
Bulk items marked up over 300%- That doesn't seem neighborly at all...
How much profit did the Franklin store post last quarter??
Yet we have people all across our community that cant afford a bite to eat. There's a whole encampment of homeless blocks away and the elitist are buying their 500% markup Chai latte and rounding up their change to feel better about it.
I think CO-OPs can still make a difference in our communities but I feel they have lost their way.....
Sara Fetyko
I was just reading a couple reviews and noticed the comments regarding rude employees and just wanted to say that definitely has not been my experience. Perhaps on an early Sunday morning, I have less than super pleasant customer service, but it has not been the norm for me. Most of the time everyone is helpful, looks you in the eye when they talk, friendly and outgoing. The employees are one of the main reasons I like shopping here. High prices are the only reason I don't do the majority of my shopping here. Everything else is great and their coffee/juice bar is a must try.
Unusuala Customeria
Of all the stores I've been in the last four months, this is (still) the one in which I feel safest. Cashiers wipe the conveyor belts between every customer, *everyone* is wearing a mask, and I know I'm doing what I can, as convenient as it is, to contribute to fair, inclusive, and sound ecological/economic practices. Yes, sometimes I feel that it's not a customer-centric experience... that's the point. Sometimes it shouldn't be. I trust these folx to strike a balance. They do.
James Rudi
This is a great Co-op they have good lunch specials and indoor seating where you can sit and enjoy your lunch. They also have a wonderful selection of fruits and vegetables and you can buy bulk herbs and spices. They also have a great cheese counter and meat department where you can get grass-fed Meats smoked fish and homemade sausage and brats.
Greg Gilquist
Checking hours on a Sunday morning...reading reviews, rude employees? This place is food nirvana, and the people that work there love being there for the most part. Seward Coop along with the central and south Minneapolis areas it serves is the heart of low impact, simple, locally energetic and globally minded living in Minneapolis. Complaints and concerns are met with feedback on their message board. They offer affordable name-brand organic products that will be competitive with buying them at Super T*****. And again, the employees are beyond awesome and people watching here is a rewarding experience, as if buying great food wasn't enough.
Dianne Schuchard
We stop at the Seward Co-ops occasionally for coffee, tea, and a few other items. We are not a member of Seward Co-ops, we are a member of the Wedge. Prices and products have seemed better at the Wedge. However, we do like some of the coffee and tea Seward carries. Several months ago at Franklin Seward and then a month ago at 38th St. Seward, upon using their restrooms I was confronted with a poster about how to be gender neutral. Part of the advice included calling whoever "friend". Which was funny because I had recently experienced that at another store in Minneapolis. After being called friend several times by the clerk (who I did not know) I felt uncomfortable. Now, back to the last Seward restroom visited. After waiting for the man to come out of the restroom and then entering the restroom I was confronted not only with the gender neutral sign but a toilet seat covered in yellow pee. This is not the first time that has happened to me in a gender neutral restroom. After cleaning up the pee and spreading more clean toilet paper on the seat, yeah, I got to use the toilet. My thought was sir, you are no gentleman when thinking of the man who had just walked out of the restroom. How about a sign seen many years ago in restrooms (as told to me by my father) WE AIM TO PLEASE AND YOUR GOOD AIM WILL PLEASE US. Or another sign seen recently by me at another establishment, WE'RE NOT YOUR MOTHER CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. Just a thought.
Melissa Kaneakua
Delicious salad and hot bar! There's always tons of nutritious options for on the go meals and the workers there are polite courteous, and extremely helpful. The only suggestion I would make is that they have more kid-friendly food options in the hot bar selection because I've noticed on more than one occasion, parents looking defeated that they can't find something for there kiddo to eat but other than that, everything is AWESOME.
Don MacLeod
Staff is great and the store is laid out nicely. I am a member of this coop, but something is lacking. Prices are higher and a few things are missing that I need. The food bar foods are usually disappointing, not bad, but they miss the mark on taste frequently. Spicing is just off slightly, but it's ok. Tastes are available and I do recommend before buying.
I still recommend going there, but be prepared.
Debelah Taylor
When this place was first being built, I thought in my mind "oh no, not another grocery store and not another co-op." That means I obviously had a lot of doubts as it was built. I stepped in there for the first time recently. My doubts I originally had were proven wrong. It really wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking.
There are tons of delightful ethnic foods that I can't find at The Dollar Store, where I normally do my grocery shopping. I'm amazed at the variety of things. The prices are a little high, but I became a member and got a membership card, and the prices drop when I show the clerk my card. The one downside is that the hot produce isn't always fresh. That means I have to look at the expiration date before I grab it. The clerks are delightful to be around.
This is where I'll go if I can't find something I want at The Dollar Store.
Mark Lynch
A nice little spot that was very friendly and high quality food that was obviously made with love. I would have gave it 5 stars but i would really have liked to see a few desserts and a main dish like steak frittes to go with their delicious French fries.
Lastly i didn't like that I wasn't able to tip, such nice polite people deserve a little something extra if they are giving me exceptionally good friendly service.
Kaija Wahlquist
Great place to shop for a wide variety of fresh produce and fair trade goods, however the costumer service is another story. As someone who is constantly on the go and doesn't have much time for slow service I found it painstakingly hard to just order a burrito from the deli, with the short line only having me and one other person ahead, I found myself waiting for 15 minutes just to place my order, while the deli associate was chatting for a solid 20 minutes to the lady in front. I had zero acknowledgement as I was waiting for them to be done chatting, I had to get back to work so I ended up leaving without buying anything. Please start training you workers to be courteous and professional as I am not so keen on this nonchalant, unprofessional, young, hipster attidude that seems to be plaguing co-ops in the Twin Cities everywhere. Professional and quick efficiency is all I ask for in the future.
Charlotte Minogue
I have been shopping off and on at seward co-op. I am not a member but it is there when I need milk, and great rye bread. I love the choice of cheeses. I also like the hot food you can eat there or take out, the coffee shop and bakery. Everyone is always friendly. The guest servicer offers me the ability to add to my to go card for the metro bus and that is nice. If they can't help you they will find someone who can. Is it perfect...no but I have been going top co-ops for a long time and they really come a long way from the co-ops in the early 70's. :))
Tom Wilson
The produce section is wonderful: it puts Whole Foods to shame. I find everything I need here without having to navigate aisles of processed foods. It's also a great place for a quick, tasty lunch.
Janani Eswar
Nice to see community supporting good initiatives like Seward. Apart from having very good supplies for sensible consumers, Seward also has a great deli. Do your shopping and then stop for a good bite to eat (pay by weight). They have options for various types of diets as well.
Leiah Jansen
Seward Coop is the best. Don't go here if you are looking for organic Doritos or any other brand names you recognize, and keep an open mind about new things! Great selection of bulk items including protein-enriched flour, nutritional yeast flakes, tea, etc. The prices are a little high compared to what you're probably used to at Cub or Rainbow, but for some things - like tofu - Seward can actually be cheaper since it's not so specialty. Definitely a must-see coop if you're into that scene :)
Jacqueline Johnston
The quality is top notch. Best grocery store in Minnesota! Worth the higher prices. The smoothie/coffee/sandwich bar is amazing. I like the Arctic Kiss smoothie and Mock Duck Ciabatta. The hot foods bar is just okay. The cold ready made food is also delicious! I like the vegan kheer, vegan cakes, vegan chocolate pudding, and all of the cold dishes I've tried-- sesame noodles, Somali and Ethiopian spiced vegetable dishes, couscous and cashew salads, etc.
Jessica Franken
I feel so lucky to have the Seward Co-op in my neighborhood. Their produce, dairy, and bulk sections are top-notch and the deli and grab-and-go foods are consistently excellent. They give back to the community in many ways, and everyone who works there is incredibly nice.
Ted Seykora
One of my absolute favorite places in the cities. I've been a member for a little over a year, after shopping for 6 months without a membership.
Everyone I've encountered that works here has been incredibly friendly and genuinely interested in helping with any question. I'm pretty low-key, and like to keep to myself, but really appreciate the enthusiasm for the community in this building.
Gabriel Hanson
I only buy lunch and produce at this coop, but I love the interior look of it and the smiling faces of everyone! I also like that they have environmentally friendly options for most items.
Mary Phelps
Staff is super friendly. They do a great job putting emphasis on small and local producers. I trust the products they carry. Also, the house made sausages are amazing!
Sue Ann Martinson (Rise Up Times)
I was looking for an article that appeared in Sprout some time ago. I never found it although I went through all the archives.
So, I found there was no way to search previous Sprouts unless I opened each one. I found some interesting recipes and information, so I guess it was worth it. But I still did not find the article, which was about toxic plastics and was probably the most informative article Sprout ever published.
Unfortunately I also saw a trend away from helpful information toward just selling, selling, selling. Although it is done tastefully for the most part, I did not like it. I don't read Sprout as closely as I used to. And most of the recipes I found and copied were in the older issues.
Also tried to copy the recipe in the current sales brochure, brussel sprouts and pomegranate seeds, but it is in a .pdf so I will have to waste a lot of time either copying it or converting the .pdf so I can get the recipe. I no longer use paper copies for my recipe archive. It's all online.
Then I tried to register as an owner, thinking maybe you had a contact section there, you know the standard "contact us" but I tried two different emails but it would not accept my registration.
Then I got interested in the Friendship store and googled it. Your social media around the Friendship store is sorely, sorely lacking, all the way down the line. I was going to write a review, but couldn't get the function to work.
I will not stop shopping at Seward. It's a wonderful coop. Recently I took a 96 year old friend in and she just could not get over it. Her first comment was, "This is wonderful." I also like the Friendship Store. The staff has been friendly and very very helpful. They are missing a few items that the Franklin store has, but overall the selection and layout is good. And I am glad to see they are being used. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
I think Mississippi Market could take a few lessons from you in promotion of a new store, as their new store in St. Paul is not doing so well, I understand. (I have a friend who lives near there and have been once, and she it happy about the store, but even more than me is a multiple coop shopper. She often shops at Seward.) The store is nice.Just fine. But I was on Maryland Ave. and drove by the Harvest Market and the parking lot was full.
Someplace I have a copy of that plastics article. I did save it. Just to find it!
Andy W.
I was shopping at the meat counter looking for a particular cut. The butcher was very kind and helpful. Not only did he offer assistance but he went beyond to walk me out to the meat case where there was a very exceptional piece of meat in the cut I wanted - and it was discounted! Nice meat & great service!
Move Colonics
The Seward Coop is one of my favorites and the only coop that I decided to become a member of. They have truly created a welcoming environment in all they do. Keep up the great work. Can't wait until my next visit!
Joaquin Muñoz
Grat place for all your shopping. TONS of great produce, meat, and breads. And everything else. Awesome hot food bar as well for a nice quick lunch, with lots of sitting options too!
Katja Amyx
I love Seward co-op. Excellent produce, meat counter, deli. The staff are both helpful and very knowledgeable. Plus great coffee to round out the set.
Edward Sims
Clean store and great selection of produce. The produce is always really cheap and good quality. They always have good deals. Good selection of meat and fish and great prices.
Tom Albrecht
They carry Four Winds Herbal Look No X Ma soap, which is great for sensitive skin!
Roberto Rueda
My wife and I love this store, friendly people, tons of organic food and the bulk area is awesome, but I will recommend to re-paint the parking spaces in diagonal because parking sucks. That small detail makes me think twice to go there or other grocerie store.
Scott Watkins
What a great place! Food is not cheap, but the co-op makes sure that your food comes from great places and great people. They can work with you to find all kind of special produce and meat too!
Dale Brose
City Co-Op. Good selection of the standards you would expect. Food bar an bakery (vegan and GF) is probably the best I've found in the metro.
Coop is very community involved.
mark b
I am just responding to Claire Vanetta.
You clearly have never spoken to Scott, he is one of the friendliest guys in the whole store. Try saying, "Hi Scott, how is it going?".
You will find that when people are in the service industry, and they are busy, they sometimes just put their game faces on and try to work as fast as they can. They are just trying to get people through the line as fast as they can. "Member number", is just his way of getting the particulars out of the way, then moving on to your order. He doesn't forget to ask that way, and members will get the full dividend they have coming to them. I see that the other review you left was also negative about the people working. I would like to come to your work, at the height of your day, and see how friendly and helpful you are. If you have never worked in a service industry job, try it out.
Otherwise, just say hi and consider what is going on around you. Look and see if the line is really busy, or maybe it is just winding down from being real busy.
Either way "Hi" and a smile can go a long way.
BTW, I laughed out loud when you called out Scott by name, I have been going to Seward for almost three years, he is one of my favorites.
Gabriel Douglas
great selection, happy employees. bike racks that are lockable. and there's a fun cafe in the front if you just want a quick meal.
Beth “RamboBeth” Y
Wonderful selection of hard to find items. Very clean and friendly employees.❤️
Mauricio Leon
Besides it being so pricey, I love it. You find quality products that you wouldn't find at your regular grocery store
Gary Morgan
The Seward Co-op has one major problem that I don't think it will ever resolve: it's too far away from my home in Loring Park. The Seward is, buy far, my favorite co-op in the Twin Cities.
I live just a few blocks from The Wedge, which I acknowledge is the Granddaddy of all co-ops in town. Unfortunately, the parking (PARKING IS NUTS AT THE WEDGE,) crowds and tight aisles tend to stress me out. For the most part, The Wedge and The Seward carry the same things. But it's SOOO much more pleasant to go to The Seward. When it's on the way, I always prefer stopping by The Seward. For the record, my wife and I are members of both co-ops. The one area for me where The Wedge excels over The Seward is in it's bulk nut butters.
I know that The Seward gets their seafood from Coastal Seafoods. That's a bonus for me because that's one less stop I need to make.
I think The Seward is a model for other co-ops because of quality/selection of items, environment, and convenience.
Paul Janssen
Customer service much improved over the last time I was here. The hot bar is fabulous today. Eat the Black Beans Abuela, best I've ever had.
Colton Nibbe
literally have never in my life had better customer service anywhere, grocery store or not. every time i grab groceries everyone is so helpful, so nice, so cool, so fun.
