Really really great place. The atmosphere when you just walk it makes it already but they have basically everything you need; freshwater, saltwater, ponds, and even terrarium and indoor plants. They have a wide and beautiful selection of fish as well as rocks and driftwood. The prices are also very similar to online and have a lot of different name brands. I live an hour away from this place but I still make the trip and skip over petsmart.

I think this is Indy's largest independent aquatic pet & supply store. The selection and quality of the marine & freshwater livestock is great (and marine in particular has improved dramatically in the past 12-18 months), and in-house expertise is generally quite good & helpful to new and experienced hobbyists alike. This is the type of place that's fun to visit even if you're not buying anything... Or you think you're not ;)

Recently went in to buy plecos that almost no shops ever had, I was very excited! Was looking for a green dragon pleco and a rubber pleco. Unfortunately the staff couldn't locate the rubber pleco despite that he hadn't been bought, but I got my hands on a young green dragon pleco. The plecos were smaller than I expected(I didn't know if they'd be babies or not) so I was worried about acclimation with baby plecos as they can be fragile. But the one I got was very healthy and he's been an absolute gift to own! Absolutely love him! Didn't have a sunken belly or anything when I got him or anything either and had no diseases. He's eaten absolutely everything he's had access to and thankfully was predisposed to Driftwood in the store's tank so he already knew to eat my Driftwood. The staff were friendly, especially when I called them beforehand to verify if the plecos were in stock! I'm forever grateful for getting my dream pleco with no complications! And I've come here many times before and never had any problems!

I visited this place several years ago, before I knew much about the intricacies of fish keeping. Knowing what I do now, today I was completely blown away. The aquariums where beautiful and exemplified passion for the hobby. The store was very clean and well organized. There was also an exciting variety in species available, both for freshwater and marine life. There was also a large selection of naturalistic decor that's difficult to find elsewhere, as in real stones and wood. The staff readily acknowledged me and was able to answer all my questions. I am still in the research phase of setting up my own aquarium, but I know I will be coming back when I'm ready to stock. It's so refreshing to know there's a "pet store" that takes pride in taking care of its animals and fosters enthusiasm for the hobby.

I love the reef. I try to frequent it whenever I can. They have a huge variety of plants, and fish. However I normally come for the shrimp. They have some of the most diverse collection I can find locally. You can also see them breeding in-house in the top tanks. Prices are very reasonable and sometimes cheaper than what I can find online for certain equipment. Staff is very helpful. It also smells really clean. Which is not always the case in some aquarium shops. The only downside I would say is that since it is so nice it can get quite busy, and at times it becomes hard to move around. However, that’s really more of a minor inconvenience at best and it just shows how popular it is.

Great place to go for all your high end fish tank needs. They offer some of the best stuff in the hobby at prices reasonable for the brands they carry. I wouldn't suggest going here if you are unsure if you want to commit to this hobby long term but once you are ready for a forever tank then head on down.

I have shopped here from the age of 11 years old. For 22 years this shop has always been one of the best places in central Indy that I've found. It is clean, the tanks and their critters are always well maintained. Great place for most saltwater and freshwater tank needs. The associates have always been knowledgeable regarding marine life, and have helped me build multiple saltwater reef set ups. I recommend this place for your purchases, or even to take the kiddos in to awe them and even perhaps some education. Great place.

Both times I've been to The Reef have been great experiences. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I've been slowly adding plants & fish to my 75gal with my rescued turtle, and the employees were very helpful answering all of my questions.

My daughter has been obsessed with axolotls and the reef aquarium had some in stock so we swung by. The employees were super knowledgeable and helpful. While trying to help us decide if this was going to be a good pet for our life style they showed a lot of patience explaining both the pros and cons.

This is the only place I buy fish or plants for our multiple aquariums, always ask for Jasmine! She's the absolute best employee. Other employees are generally less than helpful, but jasmine is always helpful, very knowledgeable, and genuinely seems to love animals of all sorts.

This is by far the best shop around I live in fishers and happily make the 30 minute drive to the shop every other day lol. Best plant selection and quality fish and products from plant fertilizers, to driftwood and rocks this place is the bees knees. I have furnished both my ranks with everything from the Reef !!!!

Super helpful staff and have a great selection of plecos and healthy fish! I went in to get supplies that my local fish store doesn’t have. I ended up leaving with a black Molly and a L201 snowball pleco. Sure has a better selection of exotic plecos that a lot of other stores can’t get! Definitely worth the hour drive and will be my go to for a lot of supplies I keep stock of! Great prices aswell!

Indy may not have an actual aquarium, but having a great shop filled with great people so I can have one at home is the next best thing. The reef is always clean, people are knowledgeable and seem to want to actually be there. They're very helpful at fulfilling all of my strange requests and they will remain the number 1 destination for anything I need for my aquarium. They have offered special order fish before, and I imagine they can source plants as well, the only caveat was the amount of fish for the order having a minimum. Fantastic place, really cool just to walk around as well, but try to go before 3 or so, as they do get very busy later in the day.

They really do have everything you need to get and it was very decently priced too, like as much as or even cheaper than shopping at Amazon. We will be coming here everytime for our fish tank!

I love this place. Every time I go I end up spending more money than I intend to. There's so much there, and the workers are always super knowledgeable, or know someone who will be able to find out exactly how to help with any issues. I've been coming here for months and have never been dissapointed. If you have any interest in aquatic life they're the place to go. They also have a great selection of plants if you're into that too.

Stopped at this store for the first time last weekend. The placed was packed, don’t think I’ve ever seen that many people inside a local aquarium store ever. I was amazed by the selection of fish and how healthy everything looked. Easily the best selection in Indiana. I’m from cincy and this place is better than anywhere here. This store had literally everything you need. Everyone working was super friendly and left happy. Will definitely come back anytime I’m in Indy.

They have one of the best(quite possibly the best) fish and aquatic plant selections of central Indiana. They have an impressive array of salt and freshwater tanks, with a lot of fish/shrimp I haven’t found anywhere else. Good place to go for the beginner and enthusiast alike. I come here for pretty much all my aquarium needs. I have 3 different size tanks running currently thanks to this place. Good selection of livestock and aquarium accessories. They get new things in fairly regularly as well. Prices are fair.

This is by far the best aquarium shop I have been too. The tNks were all spotless. The store did not have the dreaded fishtank smell. The staff were amazing. Jasmine helped us out and was quick, courteous and supper friendly. The prices were fair. The worst part was because it is such a great shop, there were a lot of customers which made it a bit cramped in areas. A must visit!

Despite being really busy the worker who helped me (a totally oblivious new koi pond owner) never made me feel rushed or stupid for asking tons of probably very basic questions. They made a repeat customer out of me. The store has what would be an overwhelming array of salt and freshwater fish, plants, and equipment without their enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable staff. This shop is great! The staff never try to sell me stuff I don't need and even will tell me if I shouldn't buy something! They are never misleading and great to talk to! I would not recommend going on the weekends because it is so crowded. If you get in Thursday or Friday those are the days they get their shipments in meaning that they have a wider selection. Definitely check it out!

The Reef has been a mainstay in Indianapolis for as long as I can remember. I dont know of another business in the city that has the selection and expertise with saltwater aquatics. The opposite side of the store is as well stocked with freshwater tropical fish. Between the two aquatic areas is a full compliment of everything needed to furnish your aquatic home for your fish. If reptiles are your interest it would be well worth your time to visit the Reef. Overall I believe the greatest strength at The Reef is the knowledge and expertise I've experienced interacting with the staff. 👍👍👍👍👍

Amazing service! Busy, as usual. But the employees worked efficiently to take care of each customer with the utmost respect and patience. 10/10 recommend! Their tanks are clean and the fish are clearly respected and cared for well. Each fish goes through a quarantine period following arrival to ensure the safety and health of each fish and the tanks. They have a HUGE variety of fish and foliage plants that are all safe for your tanks. The staff are educated on the personalities and care specifics for each fish. I recommend asking for 'Ying', he helped me and my family get a wide variety of fish and made a big impression.

I’ve been to The Reef probably 30 times in the past 5 years and NEVER had a bad experience. The staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable every time I go. I love going and seeing all the various fresh and saltwater fish. Their cycled tanks on display are always cool. The tanks are always super clean. Every fish I’ve bought there was healthy and I’ve probably bought around 50 fish from them. Very satisfied customer here. No complaints.

Yesterday was my very first time ever going to The Reef, which I had only heard about by word of mouth from another shop owner out of Illinois and I have to say I fell in LOVE with this place. For weeks I had been traveling countless hours to find the things I needed (I live rather rural in Illinois)and had I only knew of this place sooner, it could have been a one stop shop for me. The variety of plants and freshwater fish ( I didn't look at the saltwater area as I'm not into salt water tanks quite yet lol) were amazing! And the prices! I couldn't have been more happier with the prices of everything there. It was well worth every penny for the 3 hour drive I made. Next time I plan to bring my aerator so I can safely purchase some of the awesome fish they have. Next time I will be sure to check out the saltwater and the outdoor plant area as well.

Just getting back into the hobby after more than 15 years without an aquarium. I stopped in on a Thursday afternoon with the intention of looking at what’s available and calculating costs, but had such a great experience that I ended up buying the works (except for the fish, obviously). Sam helped me a lot and provided thoughtful recommendations. He really listened to me and provided suggestions based on what I’m hoping to achieve. I’m trying to get into the art and science of aquascaping. While Sam provided most of the assistance, other staffers jumped in to help as well. Great experience! I came back the next day, and Sam was there to help me decide on some biological media for my filter. This store is BUSY! If possible, try to go before 5pm on weekdays for the best experience. Also, it helps if you do some research on your own before venturing inside, that way you can best describe your needs. The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable, so they can handle the hard questions!

First and foremost: I have only been in the salt water section once and never bought anything. On the fresh water side of things: I'd definitely suggest going to this place over chain stores to buy any live aquatic friends; they take great care of their large variety of fish, will look up any critters required specs if they don't already know it, and have lots of options and suggestions for how to keep your critters healthy. They also have plenty of aquatic plant options for those who are looking to expand into planted tanks, or rocks/ wood for aquascape. Their invertebrates are healthy, hardy and vibrant. Their fish are active and properly quarantined, none of them I've gotten from them turned out sick or had parasites or anything. I've never had any problems with pest snails when I bought plants from them. Their plant section is fairly sizable for the size of the shop, and well maintained. I even brought my dad there and he loved their displays and example aquascapes so much he decided to get back into the hobby. All in all I'm going to go there from now on for any plants, fish, and invertebrates.

Also, since the remodel, the store looks amazing and is much easier to shop and browse. P.S. There is a beautiful and friendly Macaw that loves to say "Hello!"

Extremely professional and well versed staff offer a variety of fresh and salt water animals as well as bright green less plants aquatic chemicals filters in Frozen foods as well in the freezer as well as a freezer dedicated to green water which I think is the best in any concept working in organic well balanced aquarium don't miss in the car and the big cage by the cash register but do not stick your fingers in the cage! Be sure to check out the white variety of different colors mystery snails and all the various babies in the tanks

Great place, the parrot was cool. Large diversity of fish. Sadly got a clam and it passed away the next day due to parasites (Found them in the sump). Should've known since the other clams close to it were not showing the full mantle. Called them to let them know so hopefully they check the rest of the clams.

We go out of our way to fulfill our aquarium needs here. Our local shops are good, but lack quality educational information on aquarium pet/plant care. I'd consider ourselves very knowledgeable, but they can answer any questions with accuracy. Always impressed with their selections. They have amazing fish in stock. Highly recommend!

Update 10/15/20: I've been in here several times over the years, but never bought anything myself. Recently I decided to set up a serious aquarium, so this was my first stop before I consulted the forums about it. Ying took a lot of time to indulge all my newbie questions and helped my family figure out where how we really wanted to set up our tank. He even compared products to help me save a couple bucks on the initial setup. This is an excellent store full of people who are passionate about fish keeping.

Very nice store. A little pricey but you get what you pay for. No junk here. My only complaint Is the customer service could be better. Weekends are very busy be prepared to wait. Advice is good if you can get it. With that said I will be back........update 1/5/19...After several more visits stocking my 75 gallon I would say this store is great. Got all my questions answered got some great healthy fish including a rare cichlid this is my store. I'm not sure of his name but the gent with the ponytail is very knowledgeable and helpful. Will be back for my next tank adventure

I have been coming to this location since 2007. I have always been very friendly to every employee and customer in this store. All the employees have been very courteous. I have never been disrespected by anyone more than Deb the short brunette than today! She’s been very rude to me for quite a while now when I shop in the store. I ask questions about reef systems and she usually just walks away. She took it too far today. I could hear her saying very bad and hurtful things to me today. I asked her what she said to me??? Under her breath she mumbled something. Making my purchase she started telling me she will take me outside and deal with any issues. I’ve seen her carrying a concealed weapon in the store before. I was afraid she was going to cause me bodily harm with it today. I was very upset with her actions. She eventually threw me out of the store! Kevin, (Owner) I’ve known you a long time. This was unacceptable. Please do something about her actions.

My husband and I decided to stop in this past Friday to see about setting up a beginner (freshwater) tank. After selecting a pager from the front desk - make sure you do this - Connor was assigned to help us. Wow, were we lucky! He was incredibly knowledgeable about how to speak to novices, knowing when to be super definitive, and when to allow us some choices in what we selected. Patient, friendly and helpful - what more could anyone want? He even volunteered to help us carry things to the car, which was above and beyond! He is a real asset to the company!

This shop is AMAZING. be aware that they do have a scarlet macaw...she's housed but can be *talkative* (code for squawky). Just good to be able to anticipate, especially if you're in there with anyone who is sound-sensitive. That said, have them don some ear protection and GET IN THERE. It's really magical!

My husband and I just started a new fish tank for my granddaughter for Christmas. We came in to The Reef to have our tank water tested and to buy starter fish. Associate Keegan assisted us and was very knowledgeable about the ENTIRE process of starting fish. What impressed me the most was how he told us the importance of NOT buying too many fish and the importance of being patient with starter fish and the process. We asked about plants which he said the same thing!! I will definitely come back and do all my purchases and question asking there! I would also like to add that all the staff was courteous and very helpful and easy to talk to.

If anyone complains about the prices, they work for a competitor! Everything they us in stock was cheaper than all the places I’ve been too. I was utterly blown away by how friendly and knowledgeable everyone was. I bought three plants and a crayfish and I’ll never shop at another place again. The associates had actual knowledge about the marine life they had and the plant life. I’ll be back on Tuesday for some crabs and shrimp. Next tank I buy will also be purchased here. I promise you cannot go wrong here! I’d give 10 stars if I could.

Nice little gem on the east side of Indy. Has a little bit of everything for supplies, the fish look fairly healthy and most of the staff were helpful. We weren't a fan of the short brunette young lady working the checkout though. She has an attitude and was the reason I put back a heater that we were looking at purchasing. But other than that, the bearded man and the young tall girl were so kind and helpful. Will definitely be coming back, just hope not to deal with miss attitude next time.

I’m a newbie at saltwater tanks, I just bought my first one and could not believe what wonderful service I received! I was in the store on a Sunday and they were very busy, but a store employee (koi) I think that was his name was very patient with all my questions! Highly recommend The Reef UPDATE: 3/9/21 I called today and ask if they had a certain saltwater fish, the girl on the phone said yes they had plenty!!! I drove all the way there and guess what they did not have them🤬 Mind you I live 1 hour away! Not a very happy customer! Update 3-13-21 After my last trip and review, I was contacted by The Reef! They apologized for my bad experience with the store, they did everything they could to make me happy. I will definitely give them another try, and hope you will too😊

Best LFS around! We drive an hour away just to come here for fish and live plants. The staff have always been nice, helpful and knowledgeable. The plants are great quality, nice size and cheaper than you'd find them somewhere else. If they don't have what you're looking they will happily try and special order it for you (at least fish, not sure on plants).

They have everything you need including but not limited to live plants, driftwood, substrates, rocks and some of the more rare freshwater and saltwater species that you won't find at the chain stores. I'm pretty new to the aquarium hobby. After cycling my second 10 gallon and decided I wanted to get fish from here to stock it. Bought 8 endlers a couple weeks ago. Tested the water before I got the fish and the days following all 0 ammonia, nitrites, nitrates except for 1 day with slightly elevated nitrates. Had to test the ph of the store water myself so I could acclimate properly, because the store attendant didn't know what it was, whatever, not a huge deal. The endlers I got came from 2 different tanks, 2 males from 1 and the 6 females from another. The females started dying 8 days after I got them. Found the first one dead and found another one with what seemed to be fin rot. Tested the water everything still 0, did a huge water change, moved the dying fish to a quarantine tank, and added an air stone and started treating the 10 gallon. All but 1 of the females were dead by the 4th day. I'm hesitant to buy fish from here again, as the whole ordeal was extremely disappointing and expensive. Though it was probably just bad luck and that it was the tank I got the females from that was the issue. On the upside of the fish experience, the males and female are doing great and I have 2 new fry. Other than fish, I got a kick@ss piece of mopani here and I'm never buying hardscape anywhere else, because the selection is unmatched. Seriously, if you're looking to buy hardscape, you need to come here.

I really like this shop because of the variety and rare species that they often offer. Be advised that you should quarantine anything and everything that you buy here. Every fish that I've bought has brought disease in one form or another into my aquariums. No fault of the reef as they buy from breeders, but do your due diligence.

When I walked in I was given the chance to look around on my own for a bit before one of the staff came over to offer help. I'm a first-time snake owner, so I asked for advice on the correct kind of heat light, thermostat, and bedding for my terrarium. We struck up a conversation and he gave me good advice and helped me pick out the best products for my needs. The Reef has a nice variety of hides and aquarium accessories that I could choose from. Overall I was very satisfied with my visit! I plan on coming back for more.

My roommate brought me to the Reef today for my first time... We traveled from Lafayette, IN to come, an hour away. Amazing coral! They have so many different kinds, as well as many choices of anemones & a small assortment of fish. Good prices on all of them as well as great prices for tanks! We were helped immediately by a very knowledgeable worker & given some information we didn't know about anemones! I would definitely recommend visiting this place, even if you're not buying!!! i drive over to this place from danville IL because i think they’re the best pet shop in the area. always clean, tanks are beautiful, great advice and not condescending about fish keeping! i only had one bad interaction and it was with a bald guy (i think?) that was working there, he was pretty rude but maybe he was just having a bad day. everyone else has been really nice, friendly, and a wealth of information. i’m willing to make the hour and a half drive to this place because i’m so impressed with them. my plants from here are beautiful and my fish are healthy. my boyfriend had a massive fish death in his cichlid tank due to an ammonia spike a while back and the fish from here were the only ones that survived if that tells you anything about the quality of their fish. (they’re healthier than ever now, don’t worry) keep it up guys!

The only thing that urks me sometimes is that when you go in to ask for help some of the staff act like talking to a customer is the most grueling task they will ever have. I buy most my saltwater supplies and livestock here and visit often, but be careful. Half the time their tanks are littered with aiptasia, and there’s always a dead clown in the oc clown tank. When I last went the clowns clearly have ich and looked terrible. Corals are pricey and not in great condition, mine colored/opened up nicely with good care though. Quarantine and dip anything you buy here! Employees are nice, but on the saltwater side of the store corals/fish aren’t in great condition, don’t buy if ANYthing looks sick. Only decent reef store in the area though, still better than big chain stores.

I have been shopping at reef for a while now and i like this place. Good selection and well informed staff. I however do not like staff being changed constantly, it makes it difficult to build rapport. Ex: I notice that i am given low in-store credit by new staff and decent credit by old staff. I usually go in when someone i know is working. Whenever i think of donating my fishes or corals, i think of reef since i know they will be taken care of much better than any other aquarium store in town and will eventually end up at a better homes.

Visited The Reef for the first time yesterday and simply found it amazing! The workers were quite knowledgeable and helpful, especially the Gentleman with the long ponytail. I came looking to see what the store carried and feel when i start up my axolotl tank in a few months i can find everything i need at The Reef :) and the store evem had some axolotls!! The gentleman with the ponytail was quite helpful when we asked him questions about the axolotls and even fed them while we we there which was extremely cool to see!! Took my dad here because he loves fish but never had a saltwater tank before. He doesn't speak English well but surprisingly there is this one guy who can speak Vietnamese and it makes everything alot easier. I moved here from Chicago where there are several salt water aquarium stores. As an affect, the prices are much lower there. It’s almost worth the drive if you’re looking for a higher end fish. Folks at reef are pretty knowledable and helpful. I shop here regularly and would recommend it.

We do like it ...but there has been more than time we’ve asked the employees questions about new fish- seeing if they would work with what we currently have and they’ve said yes. Then we get them home and it doesn’t work out and we research and look into it more and they shouldn’t have been put together. Also the store stinks ! We do like the selection they have though.

Thank you for the response Kevin, I do appreciate that you take the time to communicate with disgruntled customers and try to correct things - I'm really conflicted on how to review the store. I have been to the store twice, as of today. The first time I went up to the store (I'm from out of town) the staff was friendly and helpful and the prices were reasonable. I left with a couple of frags and some food that I can't get back home and was completely satisfied with my experience. If I was reviewing the store based on that experience alone I would give the store 5 out of 5 stars hands down. Today, however, I had a much different experience. I drove an hour and a half to indy for the sole purpose of visiting the store. Today they were having their warehouse sale, selling old goods at extremely cheap prices out of their warehouse. I found a few things I needed and was quite happy with my purchases. The gentlemen in the warehouse were friendly and helpful. I then drove the half block from their warehouse over to their actual store and encountered the exact opposite. I had been planning on purchasing a frag or two while I was up from out of town, but to my dismay the frags were much more expensive than the last time I had visited, and on top of that many of them looked unhealthy and many were completely unremarkable. At this point I was a little disappointed but not that upset considering I had gotten great deals at their warehouse sale. I then went up to two of the staff members who were talking to each other and politely asked if the increase in price was due to winter weather making shipping more expensive. The staff member responded as if I had just insulted her mother, seeming to be incredibly offended by the question. She, in an incredibly rude and unprofessional tone commented that the frags they had were only the finest premium frags, and their prices were solely dictated by quality. She then continued on about this in an incredibly condescending manner. During this exchange, the other staff member stood there listening and saying nothing. I had had enough and left the store without making a purchase, entirely because of her response. The frags that were available, as previously stated, did not seem to be anything rare, and in many cases were entirely unattractive. The last time I had visited the store I had purchased two beautiful frags at the prices of 15$ and 20$. This time, however, with the exception of five to ten microscopic frags of various ugly leathers that appeared to be on their way out, as well as 2 beautiful ricordea (that I would have loved to buy had i not had this experience), no frags were priced below $30. I can excuse high prices, that doesn't bother me nearly as much. I'd much rather spend more to buy local than from petco. What I cannot excuse was the way I was treated by the staff. I don't know if I will be back any time soon. It's incredibly disappointing because I had fallen in love with the store the first time I was In, but this experience completely ruined it for me.

I've been going to the reef on and off ever since I was a toddler with my father. I've seen it under a lot of new management and I've seen it evolve from when I was a kid. Though the store may be a little bit overpriced at times and the constant new faces can be a little much their workers are very educated and they actually care about getting you a good aquarium that will last. This is one of the only good places you can get quality fish and accurate information. They have everything from salt water, cichlids, tropical fish, axolotls and more. They even added a pond section recently. I try to come here at least once every 2 weeks as they're always getting something new, exciting and exotic in! :)

Lots of freshwater and saltwater options and the only place in this state that I've found that sells healthy looking Ranchu and PearlScale goldfish! I recently found out that they will take in the shrimp and fish I breed for in store credit, I wish they also would take some of my purple/magenta/pink mystery snails, but I'll take what I can get. Knowledgeable staff, variety, great tank conditions and trade in for in store credit is more than I could have imagined in one store. It's an hour away from me, but yes I drove up there for over 100 dollars worth of reasonably priced Dragon Stone and Goldfish because I couldn't find anyone else who stocked such things. I don't like buying specific fish or stones online that I can't handle and see the health and over all look of myself, so my experience has been great and I'll keep being a customer as long as it's doors are open and I live in this state.

Sad to say I have to change this review from the 5 star. When I set up my RO/DI system that I purchased during my visit I found out that the DI resin was already exhausted (tan/orange). The system was putting out straight tap TDS levels (267) even after flushing and troubleshooting. This also tells me that the RO membrane was shot too (seated properly and even tried back flushing). Kinda wonder if some one had returned a used system and they didn't check the box. (Not sure on their return policy) Wasn't going to drive the 2 hr drive to return the item since I'm from Ohio so decided to buy a new system locally in case there were other issues as well (should have done this in the 1st place) now I'm putting out 0 TDS. And yes I know how to use these systems since I've had them for many years. I won't make this a 1 star review since I can't imagine this was on purpose and could have been from factory but I did need to edit. This was one of the systems in the coral room at the back of the room top shelf. Luckily the float system I also bought does work with the new system.

I don't normally write reviews - I'm new to The Reef and can't say anything but positive interactions in the 3 or 4 times I've been in. I can't recall names but there was a guy making some green tea or something whacky behind the sales counter.. was a little unsure at first - I was in there to start my venture in the hobby. About an hour later I was set up with the 10gal Dennerle Aquascaping kit, had learned loads of stuff about plants - including a c02 kit I had no idea I needed. I went home armed with some very cool plants and a wonderful display setup. I've since been back to stock some fish and more plants.. Thanks guys my tank is looking great! And keeping up on the recommended maintenance intervals has made all the difference in being able to succeed. Touching on some of the "bad customer service"- - - "no one would talk to me" --etc etc.. I cant really say for sure as Ive only been in a few times.. but I enjoy being left to my devices and browse without feeling like I'm being hounded by the employees.. and when I'm ready for help I simply asked someone.. The store isn't that big I don't get how people are saying no one would help. Speak up! They cant read your mind! See you guys soon!

I recently discovered The Reef in 2012. I moved to Indianapolis from the west coast and decided to set up a 30 gallon tank. I did lots of research on good shops and good prices and I found The Reef to have awesome supplies at good prices and employees who seem to know the answer to anything you can possibly want to know about keeping fish. I was so excited to set up my first tank. I very carefully shopped for a nice aquarium and I ended up buying one from a fish keeper on Craigslist. It was well loved and needed a lot of cleaning to get it to good condition but i bought it for a very good price. I bought the gravel, the decorations, the water treatments and did everything right.. I set up the tank and came in to the store on a Thursday, when fresh fish are stocked. I brought a water sample with me to make sure all was well with my water and everything was great. I picked out 4 beautiful pearl gouramis and took them home and floated them in the tank. Everything was great for the first 3 days.. then one of them died.... the others seemed to slow down, spent lots of time near the top of the aquarium... Gasping for air in this perfectly well ventilated aquarium. By the 6th day the fish were all dead and I was heartbroken. WHY? I did everything right... didn't I? I took another sample of water to the store and they retested stating that all levels are perfect.... Then we got to talking about all the steps I took to set the aquarium up. It was at this moment that I learned what a valuable resource this shop truly was. The total rookie mistake I made in my aquarium prep is that I scrubbed the glass with Palmolive dish washing detergent. HUGE mistake. I was mortified when I found out that Palmolive, over any other dish washing detergent, left behind a residue that was toxic to my fishes. I had, in essence, poisoned all my beautiful gouramis. It was a huge shock to me and I felt like the biggest loser. But the staff helped me very quickly, explained what to do, remove everything, rinse everything and let it all stand with a bleach mixture over night, etc etc. a couple of weeks later I had again built up the courage to try fish again. I went in, the same employee helped me to pick out some "aquarium establishers" 3 Serpae Tetra and 3 X ray tetras which really weren't much to look at when I bought them. They were tiny and they schooled and they would establish the aquarium. I even planned to get rid of them after a couple of months and replace my pearl gouramis. It has been over a year now and I still have 2 Serpae tetras, bright red and beautiful fish about an inch and a half long and I still have all three of the X Ray tetras which ended up absolutely beautiful with black and yellow and white fins and a touch of red on the tails. How amazingly awesome? I love the Reef. I love the employees and I love the location. Thanks for being there and for allowing me such peace of mind with my aquarium.

The only resource for serious aquarists in the Indianapolis area. Extremely knowledgable (especially Aaron!), they carry quality equipment and fish. In fact, you will see fish here that you would NEVER find in a chain store, at fair prices and in excellent condition. If you want to go cheap, maybe go elsewhere, but if you want to do it right, this is the ONLY place.
