I really appreciate the person that answered my questions and went above and beyond to get me the info I was looking for over the phone. In person, they do the same thing. They have a lot to choose from, and if they don't have it, they can order it. They'll just call you when it's there. Nice!! Thanks AVLCheap Joe's. I just wish overall they would consider some of the prices. I get it inflation, supply & demand, everyone has to eat.

This is not your typical art supply. The staff were there to actually HELP. I told them abouty ideas and the project I was working on. Options, compatibility, and a wide range of prices and quality levels were offered. They even led me to each section and helped me narrow down my choices. Thank you! Highly recommend!

The selection is a bit better than I expected. It's a bit better than most art supply stores that I've been to... and orders of magnitude better than Michael's/Hobby Lobby/etc. The last time I was there, the employees were very nice and sweet. I really hate shopping in general, but this place makes it reasonably pleasant. My family got me a CJAS gift card for Xmas... imma soon load up on some paints and brushes!

Cheap Joe's is a really great stop for art supplies for both the novice and the pro. Everyone was very helpful. Not everything we wanted was in stock, but we had a lot of fun checking out the fun paper, brushes and other goodies. My teenagers walked out with plenty of ink, colored pencils and boards to make creations all summer. It's definitely worth stopping for an hour if you're in the area.

UPDATE: I stopped in today 8/25/22 and had a great experience. I went in thinking I needed to purchase a particular item. After asking for help locating it, Chris was eager to assist me. What happened next made my day. After discussing what I was trying to accomplish, Chris provided me with so much helpful information that led me to the conclusion that my intended purchase would not work as intended but may comprise my work. He was engaged and so helpful. And, most importantly, I could see the happiness on his face. Chris went above and beyond my expectation and completely changed my attitude about this place. ORIGINAL: I want to love this place and used to enjoy going in to shop but there are 2 things that make it meh for me now. #1 they are mask obsessed even though the mandate has been lifted and the store never busy. (at least the handful of times I've been in since covid) #2 they never have everything I need in stock. If I have to go home and do an Amazon order then I might as well stay home and save my gas money. It's a shame too because I very much believe in supporting local and spending my dollars at brick & mortar locations. I will probably still stop in to see if they relax, find their happiness and put their smiles back on. I really hope they do.

It’s a good art store. They have the standard art stuff. Their customer service could be a little more welcoming and warm. Sometimes I feel like I’m bothering them....and I’m not one to try to ask a bunch of questions or chitchat if that’s not the vibe.

Marvelous! So accessible, uncluttered, organized, well stocked, financially accessible at just about every price point. I would love to meet Joe just to thank him in person for being first on the list when I needed an affordable, full brush set in a pinch during travels. I didn't want to buy a whole new fancy set because I have those at home (fancy enough for me, that is). I would travel all the way here from the Canadian border again and make it a point to spend my money here. If I'm lucky enough to remember, I'll find more online! The staff know their stuff, they're so synchronized, un-stressed, and available to help! Accessible entrance is on the side. Accessible bathroom. Every aisle is accessible. They're sensitive to immunocompromised staff and guests with masking up. 15/10 would impulse-visit on vacation again.

i recently transferred to UNCA, im an art major and it’s the first week so i’ve visited them a couple of times this week for supplies. for the most part the experience has been lovely, their selection of art supplies is great and the associates on the sales floor have been kind and helpful. this latest time i visited, i went in to exchange a prismacolor colored pencil because it was cracked down the middle and kept breaking, when i was at the register the woman who checked me out, who i think is the supervisor/manager named aly was very unpleasant. she pretty much implied that i shouldn’t make it a habit to come in and try to return colored pencils by telling me in condescending tone that “you need to understand these things happen with colored pencils especially when they’re dropped”, which i found very unnecessary and unhelpful considering i did not drop the pencil and it came cracked. i haven’t had this issue with colored pencils in the past and take very good care of my supplies. i think she thought i might try to make a habit of exchanging colored pencils or abuse that option. i found that very rude, she could’ve kindly agreed to exchange it without those additional comments, her overall energy was very unpleasant throughout the whole interaction. she basically didn’t talk to me after lowkey accusing me of having dropped or broken it myself, and didn’t tell me thank you or anything or speak to me afterwards. it seemed like it bothered her that i wanted to exchange the pencil and i left the store with a bad taste in my mouth. hoping the next time i visit cheap joes i won’t feel like i’m a bother for wanting to exchange something, and that i don’t have to interact with her.

Cheap Joe's has a full range of supplies and the staff were super helpful. My wife was interested in getting started with watercolor and they were able to recommend materials that would help get started with minimal frustration. The shop is kind of tucked into a corner of a plaza off of the highway but don't be fooled, it's 100% worth the visit!

This store is cheaper than Jerry’s in Raleigh( it’s smaller but the markup is too). I found everything that I needed. Windsor & Newton designer gouache was $37( they had an introductory set)vs $58 large Amazon( that’s great for someone new to gouache). I bought several kinds of watercolor paper and returned a few days later for micro paintbrushes. I appreciate the fact that staff are helpful without hovering, no one acted like I might steal due to my skin color, which is good because I then felt free to spend a lot of money. I will return the next time that I visited Asheville. Oddly enough it was near our vacation house. It’s an art supply store and not a craft store, of course it will cost more than Michaels. Michaels puts small art stores out of business, so does Amazon, I wish that we had this store in the triangle. But it also has a better selection of high quality artist grade materials. I find it amusing that some people don’t think that its cheap enough. I don’t expect Holbein to be cheap and it’s not, but their prices are reasonable, similar to Blick’s.

Cheap Joes has a lot of good stuff—a little bit of everything including spray paint! There were several kinds of paints and paint supplies. They had some sketchbooks/pads of paper but not a lot. Their supply of canvases and canvas-making materials was good. They had screen printing supplies, markers & pens, pastels, card-making supplies and all kinds of goodies. I’m glad I went to look around. I had to make a special trip to another store for a fabric craft item I needed—so keep in mind that Cheap Joes is not a craft store—just drawing, painting, printing supplies.

I’ve been a covid-nomad for a few months. Most towns and cities I’ve lived in do not have dedicated art stores (which is really sad). I was stoked to finally get to Asheville and Cheap Joe’s! Heavens to Betsy, it was refreshing to be among my people again! This store is great and the staff was so nice. The lady who checked me out took the time to tell me about the markers I was purchasing and show me some artists who used them in really beautiful ways. I’d never used markers before and was taking a chance but this staff member really inspired me and I cannot express how much I appreciate her taking the time. If you love art, shopping and art supplies stop by Cheap Joe’s and support a small business! I used to work at a similar, family owned art supply store and the care and knowledge from the staff was exceptional. Just like what I experienced at Cheap Joe's. When I move on from Asheville I’ll be ordering from them online. I just love the spirit of a real art store!

It is great to have a local store that has a nice variety of paints and supplies. I recently bought a set of oil paints as a gift and decided to buy local so I went in and found a nice set and bought it without thought. I understand that local stores will be more expensive than amazon but the $90 set of paints at the store sells for $29 on Amazon.... that is a ridiculous markup. Still 3 stars for the nice selection and friendly staff.

They had a nice selection of watercolor products but their prices are no lower than Blick, Sam Flax, Jerry's or even Hobby Lobby. In fact they are a few cents more expensive then Hobby Lobby on Winsor Pro Watercolors. Their staff is incredible nice and this location was right off the interstate. I visit various art stores while traveling. I would def buy/order from them again.

It's a pretty good place. Honestly, I don't really see why people go on and on about it. It seems like it's pretty great for painters and pencil artists but I was a bit disappointed by the pen selection. They only have one brand of gel pen and they were out of many of the colors. I was hoping to be able to support them but it seems I'll have to continue online searching and shopping for now. Otherwise, the staff are very helpful so that's always a plus.

I love their selection, but I've a not great experience that left a bad taste in my mouth. With COVID regulations, they've designated one in door, and one out door. However, the in-door is up and down stairs. My partner is disabled and cannot do stairs, nor can she walk alone. I helped her to the out-door because it was the only accessible door. We came in and were immediately berated by the staff, saying that we still needed to ring the doorbell that we could not reach. I understand their precautions, but they are not thinking about their entire customer base. If I hadn't come with her, what would she have done? I don't appreciate them telling my disabled partner that she has to do something that she physically can't. I would recommend some more training.

Great place. They were super busy when I got there. They only let a certain amount in at a time and do well following covid guidelines. They have great prices and really anything you can think of when it comes to supplies. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and will help you find anything you need.

Friendly staff, and decent prices. During Covid-19, they do lock the entrance. During business hours, just knock on the door and someone will let you in if the store if below capacity. When exiting, just push on crash bar to open the door. The staff seemed knowledgeable as well. I believe that they are closed on Sundays, and don't stay open late, so plan your trip there accordingly.

Wow - what a toy store for artists. Lots of selection, many different media, friendly staff. I had to take the credit card away from my partner lest we spend the rent money! The only negative is the parking lot is hard to get in and out of. Google Maps directs you to the street in front, but the entrance to the place is at the side.

Great selection of quality art supplies at great prices. Compared to most of Asheville's other offerings, Cheap Joe's is in another arena. The store is laid out in a manner that allows you to find what you're looking for easily without having to wander from aisle to aisle. The items they offer are all solid quality from well-known brands. You also don't have to play coupon games to get reasonable pricing.

Compared to other art supply stores I've been to this store does have very reasonable prices on paints and canvases I can't comment on other stuff. It's a little hard to find if you're coming from depot st, it will be on the left but at the end of the little shopping center thing. Near a storage facility.

The stars are honestly for the great, friendly staff. Decent prices and sort-of limited selection. There have been more than a few times that the supplies that I need are out of stock without a restock date to tell of; even for something as seemingly ubiquitous as stretcher bars. Also next to impossible to get to without a car, though I don't deduct stars for that given most places in Asheville are inaccessible without a car.

This is a great store and the customer service has always been what I required of it. It's always dangerous for an artist to walk into a place like this... " I only need cadmium red and I'm out..." Ten items later... *sigh*. The reason I knocked off a star is that this store insists on removing all plastic protectors from their brushes. I use them religiously to protect my supplies over time. It's a nit pick but I stand by the use of these things.

Best Art Store for the Best Art City on the East Coast. You would have to go to Southern France to find a better art store or Northern Italy where just like Milan Italy or Toulouse France this place Asheville NC is a center for Musicians and Artists because it's so beautiful, complete with a beautiful art store, with beautiful people. Make time for Art! By upgrading your art supplies to paint like a Maestro go to this place! They have a catalog better than anyone, on the east coast, where you dont have to worry about Earthquakes, Tornadoes or shortages of water. A very beautiful art store in a beautiful place, filled with Art Deco from the 1920s. This place is like New Rochelle New York, 100 years later.

If you are a student and can prove it there is a discount available. They occupy a small corner of a large building.

The times after True Blue shut down were really rocky here in Avl for artists, but Cheap Joe's has stepped up to help us out Big Time! This place has almost everything you could want and the staff is very helpful. Ordering supplies is easy and they call you the day it arrives. Cheap Joe's is the best art supply retailer in Avl period.
