Reviews of Wharton State Forest
Julio E. Rodas
Great place to enjoy
A good grill steak and take a quick swim,
A lot trees 🌳 to enjoy the shade and fresh breeze on those hot days.
The entrance cost $20,
They give u trash bags to put all your trash and also has a dumpster.
Bring your humbrella and enjoy the lake with the sand!!
Water color is like ice tea!!
Tina B
Great state campground! Very inexpensive, with plenty of things to keep you busy. Tubing, bike trails, water sources (no swimming tho) campsites are huge, there are "bathrooms" not the best but bathrooms none the less
Michael M.
What feels like endless forest with so much to do and enjoy, from fishing, to hiking, to camping, to biking and more. Must visit for anyone in NJ. A gem of the state!
Richard Booth
I've spent more time in Wharton then I can convey we hunt, fish, camp ,swim ,canoe and bond. I hope my kids have the same appreciation for the wonders we have right in our backyard..
Nadia Efimova
It was a kayaking trip on the Mullica river with our friends. We booked kayaks/canoes through Pinelands Adventures and also campsite in advance. Service was great and we enjoyed our trip a lot. Campsite was very good: big lots, clean, bathrooms, water pump. Don't forget to take tick repellent with you especially in the late spring- summer season.
Kris Kashtanova
Be careful of the ticks. I found one attached to me today. So glad I checked. It looked like a wood tick. Had to contact my doctor.
Beautiful long trails otherwise. I enjoyed the area a lot. It’s quiet and peaceful. Saw deer, rabbits, different birds, frogs. Loved the abandoned railroad tracks. Will definitely come again when it’s colder and no ticks.
Alex F
Great place to hike and get away from the crowds. Trails are clearly marked (markers were freshly painted) and easily walkable. There is a lot of beach sands in parts that may it harder to hike, but overall not bad. Dogs are allowed, on a leash of course and trails are of various lengths to make it interesting and challenging to experienced and novice hikers alike. Lots of areas to stop and have a break/lunch and crowds are low, most of the time, especially on the less traveled trails.
Jason Davis
Love being able to get out in the woods without a long drive. The plethora of trails makes it nice to drive, bike or hike around with ease. Having campsites available as well makes a military adventure a really nice perk too.
MARTINO MARIELLA
MY GO TO FOR RELAXATION EVERYONE IS RESPECTFUL OF THE CAMP GROUNDS
Nick Eck
Good campsites near very clean bathroom and shower building. Some pet friendly spots too. Great for novice campers. Honor system farmstand and firewood across the street from the entrance. Some east side campgrounds have kayak/canoe launch access.
Jamie Brown
Always something new to see and explore. It's such an amazing area in Jersey.
Rick Arrowood
Huge State Forest. Hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, Batsto Village, Apple Pie Hill, Atsion Lake(swimming), rare plants(pitcher plants-carnivorous ya know), fishing(mainly pickerel-the fresh water barracuda). So much to do in this pristine wilderness.
Min
I hiked the white trail three times the past week. It's less than 4 miles and quite easy.nYou could see winter and fall because of the varies of trees. And the lake view is just beautiful.
Janice Logan
Really nice to have take family here and friends. Camping is awesome. If you are a nature lover, then you will for sure take out the benefit from this forest - because of beautiful views, the smell of the nature and trees will make you feel like a real human!
Angela Z-Frace
We went for hiking at the Botana Trail (South) in this pine forest. We were the only ones hiking there, except that we saw an outdoor group training at the beginning and a lady riding a beautiful black horse when we went leaving. It was very quiet and serene park that we fully enjoyed the nature.
But watch out when you drive thru the sand road in the park. Some deep loose sand spots can trap your car, even with a SUV! So make sure you avoid driving thru such spots.
The park is virtually flat, but not much to see besides hiking and camping, I guess.
Dale Andrews
Beautiful, expansive forest. You can hike trails. Kayak and tube down the rivers. Visit Batsto Village. A beautifully preserved area that some don’t know exist right in south jersey. Recommend a few trips to experience different parts of the forest!
Miriam Diamant
We drove out there for the day to explore and take our truck through some dirt and puddles.
It was beautiful and we had a really fun time; however our friend ended up getting his truck stuck in a mud pit. (We were told that the park rangers dig up holes on purpose as they don’t like when people go off roading there, so be careful when going there. )
Jacque Corcoran
Pineland Adventures kayaking and tours.
What a fun ,scenic, self guided 6 miles down Batsto River that ends in Batsto Lake. They drop you off and help get on the boat and meet you 6 miles down river.
This course is for a moderately trained paddler. I don't reccomend this trip for a beginner, you can, but you will spend alot of time tangled in the trees and bogs.
Due to nature's obstacles, downed trees, overgrowth, and hairpin turns you need to be able to stop or turn quickly. I saw many inexperienced kayakers struggling throughout the trip.
There are multiple small beaches along the way to stop, have lunch, and stretch your legs.
You will see large turtles and beaver huts, frogs, flowers and blueberries.
Bring sunscreen, bugspray, a water tight phone bag, water and snacks.
If you forget the office sells all of the above.
Have a great trip!!
D Zara
Pine Barrens has so much natural beauty. Simple sand trails with so much history. I visited The Batsto Villiage on a Friday afternoon. There was a lot more people there than expected, but still Peaceful. Feels like time travel. Nice trip through history. Understanding life in simpler time. Lots of open road. First time Ive seen Pine cones +sand together.
Sam Poat
This listing seems to cover Batsto Village and the surrounding area which is great. I've camped at Goshen Pond several times. It's great for kayaking and hiking. Camp sites are cramped and you better bring in your own wood and toilet paper.
Joshua Cohen
This review is referring to Batso village - This is a wonderful place with extensive trails that are well maintained. There's a small museum, old Post office and visitor center and the historic town is partially open to the public, the various homes and workshops are also open (the Manor is only open during paid tours). Sometimes there are people/volunteers in a small blacksmith shop that's open to public observation.
Laura Birks-Reinert
I am biased because I grew up on the out-skirts of Wharton. There is so many trails for biking, hiking and exploring. It's absolutely gorgeous during the spring and fall months. Be sure to take a bag to carry your trash out! Visit Batsto for a great history lesson or simply enjoy the quiet.
Wendy Birkbeck (Wendy)
Lovely drive, well taken care of roads. One of my favorite things to do ❤
Ashish Choudhari
Awesome place for camping and get out of your routine life. Calm, and clean place. The entire Bodine field campground has single water hand pump, however is enough to suffice the need of campers.
Matteo Saxena Rossi
Wharton is full of trails and historic sites. If you kayak or canoe, its an ideal park. If you single track cycle its great as well. There are several trails near Batsto Village.
Nooshin Nassr
A great place for camping with a small lake and hiking routes close to enjoy your weekend. We paid $25 for each night (through reserve America website) for a campsite (maximum of 6 people and 2 cars for each camp site) if you pay it in the office it will be $20. You will have a wooden bench and a fire pit in the campsite. Drinking water was available close to bathrooms. Bathroom and showers were pretty clean. The only downside was those toilet papers, it was hard to use them;)
Steven Morford
I love everything about this place. The history, the peacefulness, and mother nature in the purest form. I feel like I can go there everyday for a year and on every single day I learn something new or find a new place. Wharton State Forest it actually was inspired me to start hiking in the woods instead of just going places where my truck could go.
Sandra Berezowsky
It was a beautiful day, hiked a loop consisting of a portion of the yellow Mullica Trail, light green camp connecting trail and the purple trail.
Cynthia Sexton
Beautiful hiking trails. Watch for the horse manure that is on the trails. Other than that very quiet and calming experience.
Stacy Keresty
Amazing Historical Adventure! Through the preservation of the village. Where George Washington and his men once resided. It's Beautiful. Their is canoe trips available. There is Trails marked all the way down The Mullica river. This is a must see for Adventure if you like History, trails, canoeing, fishing, camping, and so much more. Great for families of all ages.
Jocelyn Hawkins
Stayed at Atsion family campground on a short overnight in my car. No electric at any sites (this is clearly stated on website). Flush toilets, showers and sinks in bathroom. Most of the sites looked fully shaded and some had water access to the lake. Overall clean and seemed safe.
Ared Dera
I went in the fall. It’s a beautiful place and if you’re into fall colors then you’d absolutely love it. A lot of selfie spots so make sure to take photos.
Bertha Lukov
Row row row your boat, gently down the Batsto~~
The water is nice, good cover from the sun, and scenery is interesting. Also not very crowded.
NJ Riff-Guitarist
Excellent place to go hiking, and there are many things to do here.
michael fahr
We stayed at Goshen pond campground its a primitive campground it only has water and a outhouse $3 a person per night a nice quiet stay only a couple sites you can drive your car in most are walk in only and dog friendly
David McGuigan
We put in on Batsto lake and kayaked 3 hours up stream and then returned. Total trip was five hours. I recommend that you drive along batsto lake drive until the third put in. Easy to see as the road becomes difficult. Turtles, orchids, pitcher plants, variety of flowering plants, etc. Water cold and cedar, springs and little rivelets. The river is a true treasure, more today as there were few on the river. It is rare to hear absolute silence punctuated by the sounds of birds, bugs and gurgling springs. Put it on your agenda. If you do not have your own boat, pineland adventures has very reasonably priced trips, which I used in the past. They will transport your boat and pick you up for a very reasonable price.
Barbara Turner
Nothing like the Pine Barrens have been going through these Woods since I've been a child So for 50 years always something to do and people to meet and Beauty to see
Heather F (Nurturedbynature1111)
I had a great time with my family there. Nice size and trails.

Nature in the pines and on the brackish rivers is unique in appearance, smell, climate, wildlife....so slow down and take in some of what 🌏🌍🌎 has for us 💫 …
annemarie pepitone
Great place to visit & the mountain bike riding trails are amazing.
Novaid Khan
Surprisingly wild place in NJ of all places! I will be visiting more often to explore this area.
Courtney. Arkin and Fallon Fritz
This park is great for family camping and the lake is so clean to swim in. I loved the red color of the water from the rocks and thouroughly enjoyed my stay. I even toured the Atsion mansion and the tourguides were very knowledgeable and friendly.
Sophia Aponte
Great place for off-roading. Took my JK out and had a great time. Trails are amazing, you could go on for days.
john curatola
Went to pineland adventures and to a canoe through the rivers and lakes. Absolutely fantastic time! Highly recommend and will definitely do it again as soon as I can!
Monica Costa
Absolutely beautiful! I just love South Jersey, and the little seaside communities are great..then just a little inland there's this beautiful forest with lakes and gorgeous scenery. Highly recommend going here!
Steven.j Nase (SjSwiftly)
My little angel, I've had the best day ever. got to eat, chat, drive and chill

Beautiful loved kayaking around here. Met friendly people around here that were enjoying the water also.
Katelyn Inman
Went on a kayaking tour with Pinelands Adventures. We had a great time on the river.
D Michael McCusker
I grew up in these woods and they are my home. The sandy forest is unique like no other.
Milton Kaplanidis
So many things to do, super fun. From bikes, jeeps, cars, to boating in the lake and river. It's really fun.
Chris Folk
Great camping for the whole family. We got a tent site with a fire place.
Tony Montanez
Wharton has many back roads to travel along through the pine lands. It a fun activity to do on a weekend. Make sure you have 4 wheel drive and vehicle isn't to low to the ground. Great for all ages, kids seem to love it more.
lorenzo garita
Absolutely beautiful scenery and miles of trails to hike.
Alison E
Clean trails. Hiker Folks are respectful of nature. Beautiful water, beautiful trees. So peaceful
Tim Gilbert
Do not do this yourself but some friends and I had gone through some trails in a brand new Chrysler 200S. Dumbest idea ever but it was so worth it.
Brett Florance
Great place for camping, trail running, off roading, hiking, or swimming.
Jairo Reyes
Best place to go off road and enjoy nature
David Henning
Absolutely love this place, if you love hiking they're going to be in heaven! With many trails to choose from you'll always have great views of the nature.
Kelly Caporelli
Peaceful beautiful I love the smell's that are deep inside u can even smell the dirt nature it's a beautiful thing.
Colin Matthews
I grew up in those pines. Haven't seen them in a while but spent my childhood in them. Went for a hike in there where I used to go as a kid. It was honestly magical. It was a calm I can not describe. Mended the mind
Wayne Obetz
Nice facilities, trails, and a beautiful lake. Dogs enjoyed the trail, but we did have to pull nearly fifty ticks off both of them. Probably won't return with the dogs until we have colder weather, but we may return with a canoe or kayaks before then.
Gandalf The White
Beautiful and peaceful. Fun biking trails that start and end at Batsto. Nothing technical or difficult but nice and long.
Gareth Suddes
Always a great place for a nice hike
Born to ride
Great part of New Jersey if you like camping, hiking, or nature in general. It's in an area called the "Pine Barren's" lot's of people don't know that these beautiful areas exist. Close to the shoreline for some very nice scenery.
Jeremy Rounds
Solitude, sound of the wind in the pines, beautiful wetlands and the Apple Pie Hill fire tower has spectacular views out to Philly and AC on days when it is open. Call ahead of time to see if it is open.
Ryan Ireland
A beautiful place all around. I would only caution against staying in the state park as the private campground nearby plays music very loudly at night and completely ruins the ambience of what would otherwise be a peaceful stay in the pine forests New Jersey.
Cassandra Smith
Beautiful forest with great hiking trails and great creeks for kayaking
Logan
I had a great time, but the river I went on was very poorly maintained. I had to constantly weave and dodge large trees. But it was still enjoyable.
Sergio Morel
Great place to off-road.
Ted Ruberti
Great place for off roading. Had a blast. Some water hazards are pretty deep! Saw a Hummer H2 stuck this afternoon, took 2 jeeps to pull it out.
Aut Marie
Wharton has so much to offer. Great creeks for kayak and tubing. Awesome trails. Marvelous history and tons of peace and relaxation (especially since it is the only spot in the state I get no cell service!! -Tmobile)
Tammy Pellegrino
Great Day at Atsion Lake. Great memories since I was 12. Good food & clean beach!
Ryan Rastell
Amazing place to hike...fish....trail walk..bike rides...nature walk. Fun for every age group as long as you are a lover of the outdoors kayaks and canoeing also (bring your own)
Jordan Delever
Little to no signs directing newcomers to whats where, Google maps gives little help, i arrived after 4 so couldn't get ahold of anyone. Stumbled upon the off roading trail which is awsome. Took yellow hiking trail along the marsh which a easy n calm. Very novice with animal tracks but pretty sure I saw bear tracks so take that with a grain of salt. No bugs and great views of nature.
Matthew Perri
Easily can spend hours upon hours here. So many different trails to go down and the views are spectacular. Right next to Batsto village and plenty of places to launch a kayak or take amazing photographs. Just be mindful of where you go and respect the land!
George Bowman (Sam)
Great state park to go to canoeing kayaking trails for hiking even horseback riding if you have a horse camping areas even has some roads you can go off-roading on
Michael Sutton
Wharton state forest is awesome, I'd highly recommend coming here. The campsites on the water are great.
heather john
Gorgeous place, friendly people, very clean. Just beware of the biting flies in the dog days of summer!
Ashlyn Taylor
I've been hiking here since I was about 12. The place has beautiful historic sites and gorgeous views. The trails are long, and sometimes a workout, but totally worth it. 100% a place I recommend to any seasoned hikers.
Joseph Jimenez
Great trails to walk, or drive. Most is accessable by car others need a 4x4 or ATV. Use the Goshen pond campground entrance to avoid the trails for jeeps and 4x4's only
James Yarrow
Beautiful system of trails! Well shaded and endless miles of fun
Ruth Nyce
Being a photographer I always look for different places to do photo shoots that are pretty. This location was exceptional. Wharton State Forest is a perfect place to visit with your family also beautiful place to do professional portraits
Joe Vee
Hiking is a fun activity and this activity has massive health benefits to you. Wharton State Forest trails are fantastic and varies in length. Great experience in somewhat communing with nature while keeping yourself healthy
Vladimir Kovalenko
Great place for kayaking!
Joe Bordonaro
Great place to go for a hike!
ImagineLifestylesLux
Beautiful location to visit and take pictures with a few of our rental SUVs
Michael Mcmullen
It's nice to live in a state-protected area of woods. For the most part, the state and the Department of Environmental Protection do a great job on the up keeping of the forest. There are so many trails and fun adventures to be had here.
Mohammad Abubakar Khan
I went here to hike the Apple Pie Hill trail out to the fire tower. It's a pretty easy hike. One or two slight hills. But nothing major. The trails get a little narrow at times so be on the lookout for ticks on your clothes. There were volunteers the day I visited cutting back some of the brush. I was there on a Saturday and needless to say there was a crowd at the fire tower waiting their turn to climb up. There are some nice views up there. Squint on a clear day to see Atlantic City. The trail itself was well marked. A really good hike. If you're only interested in the fire tower you can drive out to it without doing the hike. But I'd recommend you take the hike. It's well worth it.
Beau Levin
Great for family or individual activities
Meghan Hoch
Beautiful landscape, well marked trails. I don't recommend biking as the bike road is too sandy for my taste but if that's your thing have fun. I'd prefer the hikes.
Jimi Ray
Great trails, some run along the streams very quiet and peaceful ( depending on which part you go to )
Aaron Laming
Awesome place to get out in the pine barrons. Great place to ride a dual sport and even campsites. This is a place for the Carranza memorial, a site dedicated to the man known as the Mexican Lindbergh. A very accomplished pilot that unfortunately had to ditch his plane in a very bad storm. A beautiful memorial and walking path surrounds the site. Lots of dirt road to have fun but not get stuck up to your ears in mud. Lots of ponds and gorgeous trails. Some awesome places for your mountain bike.
Lyubomyr Seredyak
Looking for adventure. Here's a place!
Joe Heggan
Quiet, relaxing spot to just sit and relax with nature!
David White
The Pic makes the very best wings I have ever had. The kitchen is excellent wings to salads and everything in between. I do not drink, but my friends tell me they have an excellent selection of draft beers. The Pic is one of my favorite places to dine!
Kathleen Bittner
Awesome state park. We loved visiting Lake Atsion last summer!
Abandoned, Roadside and Historic Urbex
One of the most relaxing and historic areas, great for hiking
Wyldchild 69
Lots to do kayaking ,hiking
Harry
Love the history part of Batsto in Wharton State Forest.
Michele Kane
Wharton State Forest is one of my favorite places in the Jersey Pine Barrens. There are many river spots where you can relax and spend the day. There are also many different canoe/kayak rental places or even just drop offs for you to float down the river for the day. Beautiful cedar water.
Олександр Васильєв
Beautiful place, great for mushroom hunting
Veronica Valentine
I LOVE the Wharton state Forrest. There’s so many adventures and beautiful sights. I even have trails I love to walk down and there’s a very special spot in a trail called “the worm tree” me and my best friend found it.
Joe
It's the pine barrens, sandy full of bugs and other critters. If you have a complaint you obviously had misaligned expectations. Hiking, camping, canoeing and more. What's not to love.
Rory Goldman
I grew up wandering the Wharton State Forest it's a beautiful place to hike bike and explore.
Ignacio Oreamuno
I went with my two year old and my partner. It was absolutely amazing. Beautiful scenery, awesome hiking trails (challenging), cool beach with grass, nice staff, and not too big. Fills up on the weekend, but great shower and bathroom facilities. Will come back. Great job state parks of NJ!!
karfn daltin
Lots of forest there. Can you see the trees.
Chester Ivory III
Single track bike trails everywhere! There are some double tracks but not many. I would say these trails are for the beginner and maybe intermediate rider. You're trails will take you to the middle of nowhere but they are very well marked so you can't get lost. Single track is really tight so you have to stay focused. If you're into the forest and riding, but you're not out there for jumps and rigorous terrain, this is the place.
jeffrey colberg
Beautiful scenery peaceful and serene
JoAnne Gordon
If you enjoy canoeing, hiking and wildlife then this is the place for you. We've rented canoes from Pinelands Adventures for the past 4 years and they are great. If you've been here you know, if you haven't you need to go.
monica Talley
You can't walk the paths outside the woods because the grass hasn't been cut all summer in atco. Deer
hunting season is coming up and I'll be afraid to walk inside the woods and I'll won't have anywhere to walk. I don't know why they don't cut the grass.
bobsaggot89
I love to drive thru this place
Davion Roberts
I hunt, hike, and kayak this beautiful park. There isn't a summer that I am not taking advantage of this resource!
Patrick Arey
Its huge so don't get lost! I hunt here, and it's very easy to get lost but with the correct heading can be a lot of fun here all day. The rangers I've run in to are very friendly, and helpful explaining anything you need to know.
J M
Technically "closed" due to the virus, but we went anyway. Trails are in great shape. Did the large loop on our mountain bikes, saw a few deer running around. Quiet weekend.
Vincent Urello
Great kayaking you have the options of 2/4 and I believe a 8-hour paddles with different pick-up points the water was running high and fast but nothing difficult because of the recent heavy rains it's called Pineland Adventures
mailgal 2000
If you love being outdoors this is the place for you!! Hiking , biking ,kayaking and just trial riding in your truck !
Clark Perks
The Wharton State Forest is an amazing natural resource in the middle of America's most densely populated state. More than 120,000 acres of forest, streams, rivers, and more. Perfect for hiking, camping, canoeing, and kayaking. Atsion Lake is a great place to start.
Justin Wann
When your girlfriend thinks her honda civic can handle the roads, IT CANT!!! And will get stuck in a puddle, miles from any paved road, unable for a tow truck to help. Only take 4 wheel drive vehicles here
Chris Sanfino
Wharton is in our backyard and a great place to kayak. Probably the best kayaking in the whole state of New Jersey. Batsto River is my personal favorite, especially early in the morning. Hiking and Bicycling are also options, but be careful of ticks when hiking and soft sand when cycling. The roads are poorly maintained, in my opinion, and the excuse is pretty lame. There are issues with illegal four wheeler activity prompting the state to close down many access roads. The state forest insists that more resources would be used to repair the key access roads, if they were not preoccupied with the illegal activity. I don't buy the excuse. They need better enforcement of the illegal activity and less prohibition of the utilization of access roads. Some major kayaking access roads look like they have not been maintained in years. So a truck or 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
Philip Medeiros
Bodine Field -- group site as nice price even for out of state. Very spacious, lots of shade, and a river. Friendly neighbors, room for kids to play. Very remote and quiet -- never saw staff, never bothered to check in. We were loud late b/c only other 2 groups some distance away had agreed we were all partying. No complaints. If you want to be out in the middle of nowhere, quiet, private, left alone, minimal amenities, this is your spot. Our pooper was a newer structure, "composting toilet" not nearly as gross as I expected... although, it IS an outhouse, after all -- but it was large enough, concrete floor, toilet seat -- not gross. Other outhouses looked small and wooden, probably grosser... heavy rain does lead to puddling but site drainage was good. Not too buggy. Would recommend / return.
William
Great place to visit. Clean atmosphere and kind staff.
Ian Wilson
Lots of beautiful trails throughout this state park. Several (very) primitive and developed campgrounds, accessed by sandy roads varying in passability. Stay on trails and avoid bogs. Bring bug spray!
Shirley
It's no lake George but the kayaking was fun ,launch is convenient
Eeraj Qaisar
Nice stretch of woods with lake, cabins and picnic areas. While not as spectacular as state forests in PA or NY, it is good by New Jersey standards and within an hour from most NJ locations. Cabins are nice with lake views, but too close to the main road.
Joseph “crazy Irish Joe” gillespie
Been to the the state forest many times . From atsion lake to Godfrey's brigdge, never had a bad time. Bring your own drinking water. Staff is all but non-existent. But they are there. Follow the rules and you will have a great time.......
Amber Yajcaji
Just went driving on the dirt roads, only stopped to get out and look at a couple of really cool things (old railroad tracks and such.) We drove back and forth a few times as far as the sugar sand would allow (it had rained not long prior and wasn't holding up the car well once we hit a certain point on the road, right around the sign and road split to go towards Batso, etc.) and it was beautiful to see all of the sites and history in even such a small chunk out of a huge state park. Knocked a star off because there were no rangers or stands at the entrance we used, so we actually had to check with local trail walkers about the questions we had. Luckily, they knew a lot of information as they frequented there quite often.
J W
This is one of the best places on the planet. Amazing stars. Peaceful hikes. Idyllic rivers on which to canoe. Nature at its best. The Batona Trail is a great hike no matter which section you chose to hike. Recommended.
Ben Monye
Great soccer fields, timely games and well organized tournaments. traffic in and out sucks, expensive foods on site, no tents to hide from the sun from the organisers, leaving most kids exposed to heat and direct sun burns there's no running water, hence no bathrooms but potter potties
Aethere Breather (AethereBreather)
I've grown up in this forest. It deserves a lot of love and respect, and is a mark of Jersey Pride up there with Great Swamp and High Point Monument.
Sure the flat landscape and the sugar sands and the pines might not be much, but our pine barrens are unlike anywhere else.
Please go to Atsion Recreation Area. Please hike these trails. They're here for you as an American.
Remember the Carry in, Carry Out state park policy. Take that responsibility. And always check yourself for ticks after your hike.
AJ Heller
Huge amount of area. Lots of dirt trails to explore with a Jeep or by foot. Would love to try biking through it. Good fishing spots. Bring a map, or a good GPS, because you can get lost really easy if you're not paying attention, and cell phone reception is problematic.
Tenacee Jed
Great place for the explorer. Whether your hiking or driving, this place has plenty to see. Recommend all wheel drive or 4x4 after the rain, puddles become ponds quickly.
William Hichborn
Great for Off-Road Motorcycling Riding
Dustin Tarditi
This is an excellent state park area. There is not an abundance of built-up recreation areas like some national parks. There are lots of recreational areas designated for a variety of interests. The Pine Barrens are a cherished resource and the regional biology has a lot of history and intrigue tied into it. Watch out for the Jersey Devil!
Amy Richardson-McBride
History, horticulture, healthy living....you can find it at Batsto Village and the adjacent biking and hiking trails. Whatever your experience level there is a trail for you, from 1.4m to +20m hikes, you're sure to find peace and beauty. A free local masterpiece of function. Find the true New Jersey here. Oh! And there's camping!!!!
Michael Lazin
If you are going on the back roads take friends and two 4 wheel drive vehicles for maximum safety because you can get stuck. We didn't but don't take the risk
Steven Schaeber
Always a great time when we visit this New Jersey treasure. There is so much to see and do here, and so many places to explore.
Please respect this park, and do your part to help keep it clean. Bring a bag and pick up what you can. Thanks!
Jairo Castrillon
Beautiful place to just go and relax unwind be at peace with nature and the mosquitoes LOL
Ted Zarcone
Great trails to ride street legal off road bikes. I used a BMW X-Challenge, and a KTM. The KTM was a bit lighter and I thought this was a better ride with the handling off road. Took some great pictures along the way. Doing some great old sites deep in the barrens.
Milan G
Better cancel your camping reservations, the park caught on fire more than 12k acres burned to the ground, just watch the news, happened yesterday
Delma Vazquez
Awesome offroading park in NJ. Trails are clearly marked and safe.
Rick Phelps
An expansive park in south jersey. There are many hiking options. You can also drive in it forever. You will need a 4 wheel vehicle. Everything has to be street legal. Some roads are off limits. There are camping options. Some are hike to only. If you know where to go, you can find nice views of the small rivers. All the water is cedar water. Main office is at batsto and open year round.
Joseph Brown
Excellent River Trip. We put in at Quaker Bridge and put out at Basto Lake. We used our own canoe, but I would like to give a shout-out to Pineland adventures. We encountered their staff throughout our trip, and they were very friendly and helpful with their guidance.
Nicole Volpa
An almost difficult park to find if you don't have the visitor center as the address in your gps, but once you're there, it's a very lovely place. There's a lake, paths, and fun festivals every once in awhile!
Brian Sondeen
Great drive today!
Snapping Turtle
Great trails as long as you have the right vehicle. If you don't like the outdoors, you can visit Batsto Village. If you want to be with the crowd, Atsion would be best. Then if you want to get away from the crowd, take the trails.
Yane Garcia
Amazing place to be with family and friends.
WiDUM BOiSE
good offroading trails for trucks. recommend no less than 32in tires like Super Swampers and a good 10 inches of ground clearance.
Abdullah M
A very nice park to hike around in with an interesting old time village to explore!! Great place to go just to relax, calming environment!! One of my favorite place in the East Coast!! A perfect place for a small weekend getaway!!
Subhanir Chitnis
Great hiking areas. No designated parking spaces but you can park just off the road on the edge of side roads. Most of the hiking is flat, sand and dirt trails, minimal climb.
Petey Pete
Lots to see and do. We enjoyed our visit to Batsto Village and driving thru the park
Nicole
The swampiest, sandiest, hauntedest, nice hiking trails around! Walked for an hour on the yellow trail from Atsion towards Batsto. Made it three quarters of a mile, tho the trail wasn't hilly. Walked upon the softest bed of pine needles and sand all the way. There's a beautiful stop off at the river just past the 8.5 mile marker. I'd recommend this for a hike!
Also also... If you have a jeep or a truck, there are some gnarly puddles, craters, and veritable lakes for you to wade through, get dirty, etc.
Jason Bladzinski
I visit this vast forest many times a year. Nothing quite so full of a sense of place have I ever felt with such intensity then when in Wharton. Camp out deep into the forest on one or both of the wilderness campsites, to get the best woodland experience one can find in New Jersey. A very rare ecosystem at your fingertips.
J B
Go explore the Pine Barrens!
Wharton is one of the best known and largest state forests.
The dirt roads are mostly legal, named roads. As long as you have a street legal vehicle it's all accessible to you (unless you come across someone's property but you'll see posted signs.)
Dirt biking is great hear but again the bike needs to be street legal (lights, signals, plate...)
Technically there's a 25mph limit on dirt roads.
Matthew McElroy
This is an excellent place for a hike. There are a number of trails which are all well-marked. The maps are accurate and depending on the trail you can see a variety of habitats.
Mark Boyd
My wife and I camped there this past weekend while in the area for the Weezer/Pixies concert in Camden, NJ. It rained almost the whole time, but hey...stuff happens. We've been to a lot of campgrounds and had major rain happen before, but Atsion Family Campground was aces. Campsites are VERY roomy and accommodating...we also noticed that after the torrential downpours, none of the actual sites were flooded. The road was also in great shape...yeah, there were large puddles, but none more than a couple of inches deep. We will definitely be back. Affordable pricing, spacious campsites and bath/restroom facilities that were super clean. Remote and peaceful...and, of course lots of places to hike in the State Forest. Great, well-run campground.
Robert Daggett
This is a very unique natural area. I've head the pine barrens could produce enough water to supply both Philadelphia and NYC with fresh water. The sandy trails and pine forest make hiking interesting if your not accustomed to the areas terrain.
Kathryn Graham
Went to Batsto Visitors Center. 3 trails start there. Red 1 mile. Blue 3 miles. White 4 miles. Very well marked. Slightly hilly. 1 side along the lake. Dogs allowed. Loved it.
TheMisstorri
Great for a hike or picnic. Looking through the old houses is an eye opening experience. If traveling with kids, be sure to take them into the little wildlife center.
Bob Moorhouse
I love the woods, but your not allowed to go where you want. I still frequent these woods, but I wish the environmentalists would just back off. And stop replacing the natural suger sand trails with dirt, it doesn't level itself out after hard rain. It makes it worse for everyone.
Alex M.
The Woods and Batsto Village are great for walking, hiking, biking, or dirt road "exploration" by SUV. Camping is good in some campgrounds depending on your neighbors and crowding. We've canoed the rivers (Upper Mullica, Wading, and Bass) several times and on weekends in the summers can be crowded but on weekdays the river or creek is "yours" to enjoy. I've also launched my 22.5 foot Grady-White at the state ramp at Crowley's Landing off Rt.542 but that was a very tight fit (depth, width of river at that point and cross current). Beautiful cruise down and into Great Bay and the ocean. If you're expecting major vistas and a tourist thrill park experience move on... if you love nature, woods and water this is a great place. Just be aware that deer ticks and Lyme's are endemic and you need to be prepared (repellent/check self and clothes for ticks if you traveled through in the grasses or underbrush in the woods).
Alex D
Awesome place for wheeling/off-roading. Lots of trails but nothing too serious/technical. Be ware of deep pits filled with water. Someone digs them 3-4 feet deep on purpose.
Terry Tomasco
This place is my backyard, my playground, my church, my sanctuary, my home away from home. A place where I hike, kayak, camp, meditate, explore, hunt, fish, imagine, dream, share, learn, laugh and love. My spirit shines in these pines. These woods are full of rich history that, begins long before it was "discovered" by murderous, greedy and barbaric white settlers, and continues through wars, long extinct industries and into the protected lands we enjoy today. If only the trees could talk they would tell many tales of good and evil and mystery. I hope that anyone who visits The Pine Barrens takes the time to learn about its unique history, hidden beauty and colorful folklore. I further hope that visitors also respect the pristine beauty of our reserved natural wilderness and respect my home as you would your own.
encartaphile
This place blew me away. I'd never been to the pine Barrens before and didn't realize how truly "barren" it really is, since I don't usually think of a forest as barren. It was wall to wall pine trees and nothing else, deadly silent. I didn't even hear birds or squirrels most of the time we were there. Definitely a different experience. Additional points go to all the tea stained, black water for a little extra otherwordliness and creepiness. I also liked that there were so many driving trails so that you could get out in the middle of it so easily.
Bob Dailyda
I'd give it a 5 for the trails which are great for hiking and biking. I give it a 1 for management who has posted so many signs that it makes you feel like a criminal to drive on the dirt roads.
Elizabeth Henry
A must if you Love nature. Everything you'd expect from camping, hiking, canoe & kayaking, fishing, boating & historic Batsto Village. Fun for the day or longer, with family, friends or just yourself. Some facilities are closed after seasons end, but camping's all year.
Robert Davis
Stayed in 6 person cabin on lake. Has full kitchen and bathroom, screened in porch.Miles of hiking and bike paths. Rangers very helpful. If it's cold at night, bring or buy plenty of firewood!
Holli Curry
Always a joy to smell the pines! Smells like home to me! I've spent a lot of time out there in my life but I'm sure I havent explored it all. I love the water ways and sand! The down side is there seems like too many disrespectful kind have trashed it up over time. The forrestry service does do a good cleaning it up! If you see anyone disrespecting this or any wilderness place, please go to the ranger station to report it.
Clyde P Riddlesbrood
Very cool place. We were there for the last two years at their auto and bottle show. Fantastic grounds, plenty to do. (if there is an event that day) Lots of old architecture.
J Wilson
Took my wife and kids off roading in my new f150 and had a decent time went thru in 2wd but it was a nice time. It's hard to find places where the cops won't mess with you anymore.
Eileen Balesteri
If you want to get up close and personal with nature and history in Southern NJ (the real, southern end where people don’t pretend to be from NY) you want to come here. A walk through historic Batsto Village gives you a real taste of what it was like in the Pinelands when iron ore was king (for cannon balls and artillery) during early America.
Benjamin Reses
Fantastic state Forest. Large area to explore. Very peaceful.
Richard Arrowood
Here's a great 2 day canoe trip. Get to the beginning of the Batso River at Hampton Furnace(?) behind the Atsion Ranger station. Pinelands Adventure can get you there. I think they will take you and your Canoe to the drop off point...and pick you up the next day. It's a bit slow going at first. You snake along and can touch the upstream creek you just paddled down. Hairpin turns. It'll open up and I guess its a couple hours to Lower Forge, maybe 3. Take my time. Look for wildlife. Have a picnic. I'll even bring just a grate and bbq. Camp out at Lower Forge. Look west of camping area for a field of Pitcher Plants. They're carnivorous. In the morning, I'm making waffles. Then canoeing down to Batsto Lake. It's very cool.
Theophilus I
One of my favorite places to take my canoe especially when I can come during the week or in the fall when you get a nice chill in the air. I also have a lot of really good memories of my wife and my time spent here exploring some of the long lost towns such as Speedwell and others I forget the names of. Of course there is also the nicely preserved town of Batsto with its history and buildings that show how a lot of people lived long before there was any any of the conveniences of electricity. In a state that is so heavily populated and the problems with high taxes that causes it is good to know the state has not yet turned the Wharton Tract over to developers of any kind that would totally destroy its beauty but has instead invested in its preservation.
Kirk Brindley3
Beautiful but the 19 mile trail if your not experienced you will go threw it on the trail definitely need a good bike no walmart bike will work well out their
Michael Scotto
We were down at Batsto, a former clay and glass works village, all restored. We rode the Fire Tower bike trail and got these pics of where a full blown forest fire occurred.
Theresa Krider
For 5.oo a car during the week and 10.00 on weekends. You can take your family/friends swimming, have a bbq, hike, fish or just relax in the warm sun. Where can you go and take the whole family do so much for so little money!
Sheri Wolf
Such a great place to walk around with family. So much to see. The kids love putting their feet in the cedar water. Great place to picnic and spend time with friends and family.
JoAnn
when does hunting take place at Wharton State Park
Joseph McPhee
Lotta history great place to spend the day hiking wheeling never been there multiple times and still have it all very huge
Zeke
One of my favorite places in the world. Used to go down in my friend's dad's TJ to go fishing and offroading almost every saturday. Now i try to take my XJ down there as much as possible for offroading, fishing and kayaking. I still find new places to explore.
Ken
Did a canoe trip threw some of the forest and it was very pretty. I didnt see much if any garbage in the river we were on. not to crowded either for a beautiful saturday in June.
Robin Pierce
Stayed at Atsion Family campground. Clean bathrooms with TP and paper towels. Flush toilets and showers. Visited Batsto Village. The small Museum is very informative. Nice walk with old buildings from 1800s. Took an epic hike from Atsion 5 miles towards Batsto. Whew. Love the sandy soil of the Pine Barrens. Really cold at nite rn, but good basic camping.
Anne P
Yes, 100,000 hypnotic acres for gaming, hiking, kayaking, tubing, hunting, fishing, birding, bicycling, swimming, and getting clear and calm, all for you. Breathe in the smell of cedar and know you're alive.
Mark Kelley
If you love the wilderness, and you love south jersey, or NJ period, you would be a fool not to visit at some point in your life. Largest state park east of the Mississippi... in the most densely populated state, might I add! Hiking, biking, fishing, camping, canoeing, just taking a walk through historic Batsto village.... The list goes on and on... Wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle! Can feel like your miles away from anything but you're only a short drive from some of the largest cities in the world! Glad to call it home! FLY EAGLES FLY!
Tower Tito
The most amazing place on earth. Ive been lots of places all over the globe. But wharton is special. No matter summer, winter or in between. Its beauty is unmatched
Kube 609
Nice day
Michael E
A great place to do myriad activities. From hiking to hunting to rafting/canoeing, to off roading, bird watching, and even swimming. Yeah its a whole lot of sand and pines but you cannot find so many trails that allow you to drive on anywhere near by.
Full disclosure you will need an off road capable vehicle to drive through it and they are now militant about which trails you can drive on. Don't even think about going here with your mom's SUV just because it has AWD. I have seen more than one abandoned SUV stuck in a mud bog with water almost up to the windows. If you don't know what you are doing stay home, it is super easy to get your vehicle swamped. If you don't have a second vehicle with you then you better have a winch. Otherwise you're looking at a seriously long hike and wait to get your vehicle recovered.
Robin Taylor
Our favorite place to go hiking! Well marked trails for easy navigation. Be sure to use strong repellant: LOTS of ticks.
Marie Martucci
I love it at the lake. Its clean and the snack bar is really great. The lifeguards do a nice job and we go all summer long.
Jessica Atkins
Great place to go an enjoy new adventures with your family. Been going out here for over 20years.
Carmella Gray
Pretty scenery to drive through, especially now in fall. Although the traffic on rt 206 with bridge construction reducing rd through to one lane is an inconvenience so avoid until January when done
Jennifer Post
Definitely a dirt bike trail and not a hiking trail. Super buggy, lots of hills and uneven sand from the race tracks. Ended up turning around a couple miles into the 8 mile trail.
Cory James
I stayed at the Atsion Family campgrounds. Be aware that campground soil is mostly sand and floods easily. The bathrooms for this campground are not the best-maintained. They are useable, but expect broken shower fixtures (one at the time of writing doesn't work at all, and the others require you to keep a hand on the button to get any water, which makes any kind of rinsing a pain) , clogged drains, and no screen door to keep out mosquitos.
Keep in mind, this was written in July 2016.
Gonzalo Palacio
This place is great for kicking with kids (more than 4 years old). While everywhere else is muddy, here the soil is made of sand and drains very well
Candida
Great family place! Beautiful surroundings.
C. H. Cohen
I have been camping and coming here since my childhood. The best and most diverse place in SNJ for a wild getaway. I just hope that the kids don't destroy it any further.
Drew Rowley 973
The Pine Barrens are home to so many mysteries and it is so isolated and scary but so pretty many abandoned villages and there is not much agriculture except for Cranberry’s
Rita Kallie
Nice hiking day.
Brian Harris
the unpaved roads were rugged yet well maintained. a great drive for 4-wheel drive vehicles and regular cars alike.
Vettie Grier
Lovely park, clearly defined trails, and secluded campsites. Lifeguards at the Rec Area are a little overzealous, but the beach is a nice addition.
lordmbuk
Nice place to off-road. Be sure to visit Ranger Ronnie at the station. He is very knowledgeable about the area and likes to inform the public.....cool guy and easy to talk to.
Christina Sampson
Beautiful Forrest and drive through. You can see a bunch of trees/animals/plants. Thered places you can take a hike through. It is just really beautiful!
Phil Regular
Camped here 2 nights buttonwood hill. Nice sites however the loud rock music from a bar across the river was a mildly annoying friday night. Will be back.
Daniel Lee
Great park for car camping and day activities.
Richard Lore
I always enjoy myself when I'm out in the Pinelands of New Jersey....if you go there, it's important to know that a 4wheel drive vehicle would give you access to some really remote places. It's GOD'S country
Dana Tarquini
A great place to get away from it all. It is a beautiful wild place right in the middle of the congested Northeast Corridor. Trails, trees, secret places. You can't go wrong visiting anytime of the year.
Mike Snyder

I love this land! Excellent hiking, biking, fishing, camping, canoeing, kayaking! I've never even seen the Jersey Devil.
David Donsky
Love this place. Lost a star due to the locking up of Apple Pie Hill. I am aware it was the fault of miscreants not the park service, however it was the best view in south Jersey.
Baruc Villalobos
Great place to take your day off!@
Rovinoak
We love Atsion campground , it's only 28 miles from Philadelphia so it's our go to camping spot.

Donald Harris
It was such a big pleasure to leave their Inner City and just let nature take its course very enjoyable serene everyone needs a nature hike
G LaMartina
Beautiful place to explore. However, hours should say open 24 hours since it's a free country and people should be free to explore whenever they want
Thom van Tijn
One of the most beautiful spots in New Jersey. I think it's best seen from one of the rivers running through it, especially the Wading River.
Marilyn Ganley
Wharton State Park has a lot of the United States history of where iron ore came from how was shipped out how people lived in that time and Air a lot of things to look at and enjoy
Jacob Heise sr
We spend a lot of time in those woods. Can do a lot out there like hiking and camping and canoeing. I don't fish but my friends say it's good.

Mat Sohl
Make sure to check out the Caranza Memorial. Here are the Directions:
From the East: Route 70 West to the Red Lion Circle (206/70). Proceed 3/4 of the way around the circle onto 206 south for about 1 mile. Bear left on Carranza Road (Rt. 648). Continue through the Route 532 stop sign (Nixon's General Store on the left and Russo's farm store on the right), on Carranza Rd. in Tabernacle. After a couple of miles of sparsely settled farm land and small affluent developments you will enter the Wharton State Forest. Go Past the turnoff for the old NJ Correctional System Boot Camp and continue another 1.8 Miles. The Carranza Memorial site will be in a clearing on your right
Rick Cantin
