Reviews of Thacher State Park
Corey Hailey
There are a ton of different trails here to hike and this is just overall a nice park to be at. There's also a heck of a view.
The park is easily accessible for anyone. Playground for the kids, tons of hiking trails that are great for beginner hikers with great views. And with ,what used to be, waterfalls along some of the trails. And a viewing area towards the beginning of the park which I HIGHLY recommend stopping at if it's your first time there.

Always a fun time visiting the John Boyd Thatcher State Park. Been coming here since my childhood, but haven't been back in years.
We hiked the Indian Ladder Trail and it did not disappoint. The weather was perfect. Not too many people on the trail. There are a several areas were you'll need to be careful as it is very steep, without a safety railing. There are stairs and many steep inclines, so it's not for strollers or wheelchairs.
The park has many great features...we didn't see everything, but from what we did see.... there's a playground, so many picnic areas, and plenty of public restrooms. However, we weren't able to use the restroom at the Visitor's Center, as there was a private event and they had locked the doors to the public.
Overall, I'm super happy we went. It had been quite a while. And, those breathtaking views 🤩!!
Tammy
Really enjoy this park. Its been years and our visit in September 2021 was great to see the upgrades that have been made. The visitor center has some family fun adds, slides and rock climbing wall for kiddos. The views are awesome and the trail below past the falls is lovely.
Anubhav Halder
It's a beautiful place to spend an evening. All the trails are very calm and clean. The view is also good. Trails are not that hard or risky to follow but in rain it might be a bit sketchy. The rocks are the best part of it. The trees and rocks make this place a must visit.
Nandini
It's a beautiful place for any level of hiker. Whether you're looking for a leisure walk or a good hike, Thatcher Park has it. Also, if you just want to go for a view drive up to the overlook. It's a beautiful view. Thru also have an adventure park. Make sure to pay the parking fee and leave the receipt on the dashboard, if you go hiking. They do check and will fine you. It's definitely a worthwhile experience.
David Packer
Cool spot for hiking and scenery. Hikes are relatively easy but some stairs in some parts. Magnificent scenery. Not too crowded. Can be some waterfalls depending on the time of year. Amazing views. Interesting visitor center though may not be open depending when you go. Need to pay for parking. Dogs are allowed on leash. Worth checking out!
Eric Micallef
I absolutely love it here! Such a beautiful place. The Hiking here is amazing. The Trails are great. Me and my friends when on a few trails, and one of them was Indian head trails. And it was absolutely awesome. The trail has a lot too offer. From great view over looking and amazing landscape to beautiful rock and rock formations. Each trail has its on difficultly levels. Some are easier then others and some are harder then other. So do a little research to find the right trail for you and if you have a party. Definitely stop here and hit the trails. If you’re a hike or just starting out. You’ll love this park. Just like I do.
Sharon Doyle
Visitor Center Closed after 5pm Saturdays, so we could not find any open public restrooms. Park was nice but they need better signage. The view was pretty from the lookout point. We liked the Indian Ladder Trail.
Anar Gojayev
This is a nice and simple place to either just watch the nature, or take a quick hike. People visit with their children as well. Fall colors are amazing here. Expect good amount of people as this park is not too far away from Albany and neighborhood towns.
Raqib Hasan
Absolutely love this place. This whole place was underneath 1 mile of ice during the ace ages, there are also fossils from Devonian era, for someone who's into prehistoric geology and animal/plant life and fossils like me, this is a great place to visit. Nice trail if you want to get some cardio in as well.
Mary Flores-Camacho
Thatcher Park has been on my list for a long time. Not sure why it took me so long. My friend and I hiked the most popular and impressive hike, the Indian Trail. It's less than a mile and spectacular! Although it was a fairly easy hike, there are several sets of stairs going down and then up. The grounds were wet where the waterfall is, so I recommend hiking boots. There was not a lot of water coming down the rocks. The ranger informed us that it's best to go on this hike after a rainfall. There's a small playground for kids near the visitor center. The park and trails (except for Indian Trail) are open year round. I can't wait to return and explore the other trails! I highly recommend this park.

I love this place, especially the overlook and the visitor center. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited yesterday. Hence no washroom was available. Parking is free as far as I know (at least the parking lot near the overlook). Beside that Indian ladder trailhead was under maintenance and restricted to visitors.
I have added a few photos of my last visit (Jan 15, 2023).
Shane Lawrence
Fabulous State park. Great easy walks, hikes fantastic unbeatable views. Staff at the visitors centre are amazingly helpful. Very clean and tidy bathrooms. Heaps of parking. Not busy at all. Highly recommend checking it out! We will definitely be back!
Extra bonus it’s dog friendly!
Atishin Sadaf
Great views and has many hiking trails. Went on 11/10/2022 and there was NO parking/entry fee of $6 and plenty of parking spots available. Has a rock climbing area for experienced people.
kuldeep kumar
Really good state park in capital region. Went here for the hike and really enjoyed it. We did the Indian ladder trail and the escarpment trail. It was 3.7 miles round trip. The trail itself passes through 2 water falls. There are stairs in some steep sections. Overall an easy trail. You are hiking mostly in the woods and there is lots of shade. Along the way you pass buy a lot of bbq spots where people are barbequing. The visitor center is in the middle. On the right is the Indian ladder trail and on the left is the escarpment trail. The escarpment ends with the halies caves. Lovely place for outdoor activities with friends and family. Highly recommend this place.
Amy Kutell
If you're seeking a beautiful experience in the outdoors, you'll find it at Thacher Park. The Indian Ladder Trail winds along the steep drop offs, taking you under rocky overhangs and through refreshing small waterfalls. Breathtaking views of the Albany valley are visible at every turn and the only sound you'll hear is the whistling of the wind through the trees and your own footsteps.
Marian Bloom DarkStarDreams
My family and I walked the Indian Ladder Trail and the Helderberg Escarpment. Beautiful overlooks, waterfalls and small caverns. The walkways were very well maintained with proper signs for safety. Limestone cliffs gave way to amazing scenery and juniper trees filled the air with a warm light scent while hundreds of different plants made for a lush carpet along the edges of the paths. Red tailed hawks, falcons and turkey vultures were able to be spotted almost everywhere you go swooping low for a great photo opportunity. Highly recommend this park to children for learning and adults for relaxation or light thrill seeking.
Julie Webb
Very beautiful, wonderful views, lovely lake and campsite though swimming area was very small, good for canoeing. No cafe at visitor centre, they are not making the most of the place they have. Since so many walkers are passing through more amenities for them would be good. Nature centre closes at 4pm which seems very early given the number of visitors around.
Irish Conklin
This place is beyond breathtaking. We learned about it from hikethehudsonvalley.com - great website. We did the Indian Ladder Trail. The walk itself is easy, with a couple steep parts (but those are short). Make sure to stop at the visitor center. It's beautiful. There are bathrooms, interactive kid learning stations, and there's an exhibit on the main floor that explains the history of thr landscape. (It shows you fossils to keep an eye out for while hiking- lots of fun!) Throughout the park there are paved walk ways, few pavilions, places to BBQ, a horse shoe pit, people walking their dogs, and a small jungle gym. I'm sure there was more but we didn't explore the whole park that day. (It was a pretty clean park too!)
David Vahue
Thacher Park is one of the best kept secrets in the Capitol District. A ton of brand new facilities in several locations around the park are a great commitment to the park for years to come. It truly is a 4 season wonder for any nature lover!
Tony Colasurdo
Love it here. Great place for a day trip to check out the countless waterfalls. Pavilions are clean and there are restrooms all over.
t nguyen
Wonderful state Park with lots of trails and a visitor center with clean bathrooms. Bring a picnic and enjoy it on the many picnic tables. Indian Ladder Trail is a must do. Steep ladder so be warned. Love it during the peak foliage. The view is amazing.
David Sinagub
What amazing park! Playground was super fun, trails were nice and the grounds were well maintained. The view was superb!
C Fraser
Cool walk down to the cliffs and old caves used by the Indians. Plus it has a nice new visitor center. Parking costs $6.
Prateek Gupta
Amazing and Fantastic, just 20 mins drive from Albany. A lot to do for the kids and spend day grilling. Absolutely gorgeous in fall!
Nam Cao
Beautiful park with a couple waterfalls. Playgrounds and picnic areas. Easily accessed viewpoints of escarpment. Frisbee golf course and mountain bike trails and Visitors Center are really nice, but there is a parking fee for most lots.
Ahmet S
My favorite things at Thatcher the #overview look and #indian ladder trails. Spacious parks with lots of available tables and picnic spots, also perfect peaceful place for hiking and walking.
Ekatalynda Rubinova
Spectacular view! If you are on the area, it is definitely worth the trip just to see it. Otherwise, unless you're picnicking, nothing special. I ran into a bunch of really loud obnoxious people, so maybe my opinion would have been better otherwise. I prefer spaced with water.
Dennis Hennessey
Beautiful state park. Views into the Adirondack and Massachusetts. Many miles of trails. Play places for kids. Six bucks to park.
Arthur Carron
It was a great day, we had a shelter to sit it to get out of the sun all in all a very nice place to spend the day. Hiking trails and playground for the younger kids as well.
Michael Kelsey
Nothing beats the Indian Ladder hike. It's rugged-looking and filled with grandeur but easy enough and short enough for people of all abilities, except for those bound to wheelchairs or strollers due to staircases on either side.
Hussein Fayad
Great trails with wonderful views, great for families and pets, and some difficult trails for experienced hikers too.
Anant Patel
Good spot for a day picnic or a small hike with a group. Deducting a star cause you can't find food anywhere nearby, so we need to carry our food and water with us.
The hike was easy, and the view from the fountain was awesome.
Don't forget your sunglasses 😎.
jan langevoort
Love this place. Always had a blast walking the trails here anytime of the year.
Yanira Quinones
Beautiful park! I thought the hike was going to be harder but it wasn’t too bad. The most difficult park is probably the stairs. And be careful when you walk through some parts because if it’s wet it will be very slippery to walk on the rocks. I went around noon which wasn’t too busy. But if you want more of a peaceful experience get here early. This place definitely made me feel like I was part of a fairy SYFY movie set.
Israel Arrysta
Very mice experience, feels pretty civilized but like youre still in nature. Beautiful park. Indian Ladder Trail has remained closed w no information update on the park's website but theres still plenty of trails and things to do. Beautiful sunsets, breathtaking sunrises.
Danielle Bottari
The trails are great for 8 year olds. The park has activities for kids. The waterfalls are beautiful!! We loved it.
Kevin Rohl
Very nice place to go for a hike. Spectacular views. Plenty of parking.
Jenna Robinson
Great any time of the year! The lookout is spectacular for views of Albany. The Indian Ladder Trail is a perfect ~half mile trail with scenic views and a waterfall you can walk behind if there has been enough rain. There’s also an 18 hole disc golf course and rock climbing (check in with staff at the main building for climbing info). In the winter the trails across Thacher Park Rd are great for xc skiing. In the summer they are great for walking, running, and mountain biking. Well worth the visit!
Elle Louise
Beautiful autumn day at Thatcher Park. The air is crisp, the colors are coming into their own, the birds will be happy to have an abundance of nuts and berries. I enjoyed my day walking my dog and taking in nature's glorious changes.
Jonathan McCann
Always a great time coming here!! Great trails grounds are well maintained and very family friendly!!
J. Schindler
We don’t usually go on hikes, but we did here! A great place to see some of New York’s beauty!
Tawnya Baur
What an amazing Park, I'm so glad that I took the time to stop in and check this scenery out. The mountain views were absolutely beautiful from One area to the next it is definitely a different view from each parking area. Next time that I come up I will definitely take a little bit more time to explore this beautiful State Park. Truly was a sight to see. The cost of admission is typically $8. Totally worth it, you don't get to see that kind of stuff everywhere
Charles I
Always enjoy the overlook. This weekend it was enhanced by a Hawk Migration event. Many other less obvious trails throughout the park provide for excellent experiences in nature.
Buddhika Withanage
Amazing experience!! The trails are so engaging and nicely maintained. Had an awesome time. They allow your pets. So a perfect place for a long hike with your pet.
Donald Boller
Terrific place! Well maintained, Adequate parking and picnicking space. And terrain like the Rockies!
Maarij
Beautiful park. Best time to visit is in the fall. Wonderful experience at the waterfall.
Adirondack Jim
I havent been here in 20 years. Beautiful welcome center and great ( well managed trails)! Its magnificent for all ages, but you want to keep your pets on leashes and little ones close due to the steep cliffs.
Vian
Loved the little hike to the Indian Ladder, great views!
Great facilities too, very clean restrooms!
Sarah Lajeunesse
Easy to follow nature trails take you all over the park to see some beautiful views. There are also plenty of grills and picnic tables as well as pavilions for events. For kids, there are playground areas, basketball courts, and other amenities. Bathrooms can be found in different areas. A great park to enjoy a day in.
Note: There is a $6 parking fee unless you have an empire pass.
Emily Karsten
This place has wonderful views any time of year. Obviously some of the trails are only open during summer hours due to slippery/unsafe conditions, but most of the time you'll be able to find something fun regardless.
Rekha Gauchan
Beautiful view from the view point and peaceful. Went for a hike too
Caroline Buckley
I love walking around this park. Every time someone comes to visit me I take them here to go for a nice short hike and see the pretty waterfalls and lovely views.
Suparna Banerjee
Nice place to check out some fall colors. Nicely maintained and lots of places to take some photos.
Jeff Lowenstein
Gorgeous preserve - great limestone climbing (sport), and lovely hiking trails as well. Views of the valley are breathtaking! The visitor center is a highlight as well - beautiful building with nice facilities and great educational materials to learn about the history of the preserve.
Karen Chadwick-Mello
Very nice state park with maps, volunteers to assist in planning your hike, restrooms and planned hikes with a tour guide on Saturdays! Very clean state park with a moderate amount of visitors on weekends!
Jacob
Thacher park is a fabulous and wonderful state park with lots of trails for hiking.
great easy walks, hikes fantastic unbeatable views.
Employees at the visitors centre are pretty helpful we visitors needs.
Very clean restrooms, enough parking spots for weekend bbq, hike, bike plan. I highly recommend thatcher park in fall season!
Plus, extra bonus 😁 it’s dog friendly environment!
Wish they add few charging spots for electric cars!
miftino (Miftino)
Cool place, and there are a lot of good views. 🙌⛰️ …

One of the best places to see fall...
Carry your own garbage bags
Nahla Elawad
Beautiful place with amazing scenery and walking trails
A Gevegy
Beautiful views, clean bathrooms, nice trails. I bet its amazing in fall! We had fun walking along the cliff trail and taking pictures at the overlook. I'd definitely come again!
Karen
Hadn't been in years, but remembered bringing my children and how spectacular it was (and it still is). Brought a friend who was visiting from out of town and they absolutely loved it! Want to go back in October to enjoy the fall foliage. I highly recommend it.
Rick Killam
An awesome place to just relax and take in the views.
Tom Parsons
Great views. Lots of picnic areas and hiking trails. Lots of parking too.
Rich Weinert
Beautiful park with amazing hiking trails and stunning views of the valley below. Caution would be needed with small children due to steep cliffs in some areas. Well marked with caution signs, but you know kids!!
Suraj Gupta
We love this place. The place is perfect for panic, trail and some beautiful scenic view as well as one water falls. Lot of spot with grill for barbecue. Plenty of open space, this state park also have slot for Disc golf.
Red Demers
We loved it here! The overlook is great. There are many trails, many play grounds, many rest rooms, many picnic tables and cookers. Ofcorse the horseshoe trail is most beautiful. Just remember the historic and most amazing Indian Ladder Trail is closed. We also drove 3 minutes up the road to Thompson Lake and sat down at the Lake. There are trails too and a Nature Center.
Olga Dzyurak
Beautiful views! Will come back to explore more
Brit F
Its an easy hike with beautiful views. It was very crowded when we went although most of it was at the picnic areas and upper trail. Due to covid they have a set path to which you are expected to travel to combat you running into people and being in close contact. The waterfall was dry due to the recent weather we've been having. Still worth the hike though!
George
Remarkable scenery with plenty of spots for a family picnic. Breathtaking when the foliage is peak, but spectacular even on a casual summer day. Be sure not to miss the Indian Ladder Trail if you visit!
A M
The park is an amazing place to visit and offers something for everyone. If you enjoy walking or hiking, there are trails throughout, gravel roads and scenic overlooks.
If you enjoy picnicking, there are covered and uncovered tables (If walking or sitting in grass, be extremely careful and watch out for ticks as it's a high-risk region for Lyme infections.) One of the most picturesque spots is the long overlook at the top, offering excellent views of the area on a clear day.
Enjoy freshly made snacks and refreshments at the food stand near the overlook (the homemade ice cream was great). Visit in late October to admire the second-to-none beauty of the fall colors on the hills. Hike the Indian Ladder trail along the Helderberg Escarpment when open.
Also stop by the recently built environmental education center further down the road. Summer, winter, spring, or fall -- every season in the park offers new sights and experiences.
The park is an environmentally, geologically, and historically unique and amazing place.

One of the best places to see sunrise!!
William Curry
Great place for a relaxing hike, picnic, or just to take some great pictures at the overlook. I love the fact that they have charcoal grills and picnic areas at all the parking lots. They keep all the picnic areas very clean. My family and I visit this park at least once a month.
Matthew Conway
Their railing-secured scenic outlook is a pretty good draw and you don't need to pay to enter the park in order to take advantage of the wonderful view - it's amazing how small and large it makes downtown Albany look at the same time. Plenty of free-access picnic tables and a few with access to a grill for cooking (carry in/carry out - please dispose of your charcoal). There are plenty of free trails that are family-friendly. If you're looking for something more intimate there are a wealth of trails, including a few leading to more railing-less encounters with the edge of the escarpment.
Mckensie Macdonld
beautiful! hike as long or as short as you would like. or not at all an just park at the viewing spot. love love love love
Ayon Ibrahim
Absolutely gorgeous - highly recommend coming here during Autumn. Breathtaking vistas that really exemplify the beauty of upstate NY.
William Borrelli
Park and facilities are fantastic. I'm not sure why more people don't come up. Family friendly. Lots of activities and climbing
Gary Kolarcik
We did the Indian ladder Trail in early August. Park by the visitors center for close access to Trail. Excellent Trail! A little scary for those afraid of heights. A little tough for the young ones. Some dangerous areas where you need to be careful, but if you follow the rules and the signs you will have the best hike! A few waterfalls to see on the upper and lower Trail. Don't miss this hike!
JoAnn Pangburn
I went on 11/7 and lucked out that the parking fees were waived after 10/31. Being November, it was not crowded and there was plenty of parking but I can imagine it is probably packed/crowded during the summer or holiday weekends, so I am glad I came off-peak. A beautiful park - HUGE - you'd have to go back several times to try all the different sections/trails. I was at the Indian Ladder section, the Indian trailhead was closed (why it didn't say) but the open trails available were great - not the most challenging terrain, but great views & an easy, relaxing 4-hour hike!
Patty Wimpfheimer
Such a naturally beautiful location for a wedding!
Aurora Signorazzi
The trails are beautiful, I recommend going to the yellow one for the swamp area and go down the rocks on your way back, the view there is amazing!
Michael Matatia
Thacher park always has been a great park, from picinic areas to the dramitic hike down the cliff od sedimentary rock. Cone in the spring when new rock falls happen and you may even see a fossil. Beutifule views of the Albany area. Often overloooked are some of the other trails around the park, one is the trail to Hand Gliders Cliff, which is a nice wide trail that leads to a beautiful view (pictures include of Indian ladder trail and Hand Glide Cliff).
Chanchal
Stunning views and wonderful Indian Ladder Trail spot. Must go there if you visit this state park. Fall season look will definitely be awesome.
Dave Bibbins
A sprawling park on what used to be the shore of an ancient lake. If you like the outdoors even a little bit, you'll find that this is a very special place. Hiking, biking, picnics, natural wonders... I can't wait to go back.
Sophie Ben
It was the first park I went to in Albany area and absolutely the best one
Nicole B
Beautiful beautiful area. Hiking, picnic, biking and much more. Definitely have to experience the views for yourself!just went on a 4 mile bike ride today and it was amazing.
Shadow
Beautiful amazing views hiking trails just beware of the edges fantastic places for pics
Valerie Cunha
Suuuper beautiful in the fall! It comes alive when the leaves change color. I love this place my kids and I come at least once a year to walk the trails and take pictures along the way! 😊 …
Zach Culver
Beautiful place to do all sorts of outdoor activities. The 18 hole disc golf course is a good mix of open and wooded area. And the ladder trail is a lot of fun and very easy to do.
Colleen Dobbin
Beautiful.. well maintained
Karen Hale
I love this place. Lots of hiking trails and picnic areas. One specific Trail is called the Indian Trail and it is goes along Helderberg Escarpment. Trail itself is a hundred feet down you have to climb stairs on either end of the trail. There are waterfalls and caves along the way. It's a narrow path so I don't know if it's really good for real small children.
Dan Aquidneck Dying Light
This is a beautiful park full of history and fun! This was my 3rd time too the park so far so I'm getting a good bearing on it. A lot of sites for activities and trails allover. The views are amazing as you can see my pictures uploaded.
Amanda Parry
What a great park! None of the hiking trails were too hard, it wasn't crowded at all. We came on a whim and it was worth the drive!
Ryan Smead
Awesome views, unfortunately the Indian ladder trail was closed when we visited but still rating a 5 star as the other hike was pretty cool and looked like the ladder trail would have been epic.
SkipFees
What a park! Beautiful trails. My favorite was down below. I was afraid and excited at the same time. Great place if you love the trail adventures.
Pamela Shufelt
Indian Ladder Trail was open this visit. Beautiful views from anywhere along the escarpment. Note there are many stairs, loose gravel and wet footpaths along the ladder trail. Be careful.
Anand Chandrasekaran
Amazing location for fall colors

Beautiful park. Plenty of picnic tables. Hiking/walking trails. Play ground for the kids. Really nice visitor center. Incredible views.
Jim Rogers
This is a great place to take your family or on a picnic or a girlfriend on a date it has beautiful cynic outlooks and fields in historic Indian ladder trail which clings to the side of the mountain. Also has their new visitor center. Great place to take a ride to on motorcycle or car.
Karen Molinares
Nice views and a great place to bring the kids to play. There are many outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, skiing and much more that you can do. The visitor center has activities for the children like wall climbing, slides, simulated bat cave, and fossils for viewing.
Sue Pacillo
We loved it. My husband is not a hiking person, but he enjoyed the upper trail and the trail to the waterfall.
He wants to come again.
We will be back.
Jenna G
Love this park. Lots to do and see and my son loves it. We've gone multiple times this summer and never been to the same place twice.
Michael Bogin
Amazing views. Indian Ladder Trail is totally unique. The visitor center is beautiful. Zero complaints. Great hike.
Brendan Swider
Clean. Friendly staff. Wide variety of activities including walking/hiking trails, playgrounds, disc golf and pavilions. We walked with our three year old the pretty easy Indian Ladder Trail which provided lovely views of the mountains, waterfalls and rock critters.
Walter Bergold
So beautiful and picturesque. Great for the children, big slide and 2 zip lines. Love it.
Hanh Nguyen
Fabulous park even in winter. But the Indian Ladder trail closes during winter.
Sharon Askew
It's beautiful at any time of the year at Thacher Park!
Efrain Salazar
Beautiful views to Vermont, Massachusetts and Upstate New York.A place to relax. Walking and breathing fresh air makes me feel free and in contact with the Great Spirit.
Amrish Kelkar
Visited this park on a weekday recently (mid october, 2018). It's a beautiful place with nice vistas of fall foliage. There's also a short hike to see a few waterfalls.
Niko Stroud
Took the Indian Ladder Trail. Very pretty, about a 20 minute hike through tiny waterfalls and beautiful rock cliff overhangs. Would reccomend for a low difficulty scenic trail.
CJ
The Ladder Trail hasn't changed much in the past several years and that isn't a bad thing. But the new visitors center is great. The individual exhibits are small but well done. The building is pretty with a lot of nice touches and "embedded" features like fossil exhibits in the end tables. Outside there are several well built playground features for the kids, the "big slide" being the highlight. Also quite a bit of seating outside and inside with great views. The finished grounds surrounding were very nice even after a long run of rainy days. The staff were friendly and attentive, particularly with the kids. Well worth the family trip. Highly recommended for fall viewing. We'll be going back to experience the park in the late spring or early summer.
Don Lansing
Beautiful views. Hiking trails, picnic areas, and waterfalls.

Thacher Park was great for a mini hike. The trail was quiet exhausting and the views were spectacular given the time we went. ( Fall )
Hedgehog Coasters
The park provides visitors with amazing views of the capital region and has a good amount of outdoor-related activities for everyone. The hiking trails here are also decent but remember that you are hiking at your own risk, and the trails can get rocky, steep, and slippery at times.
Sandra Wilson
Love exploring Thacher State Park in all seasons. It can be a bit slippery in the winter but if you are cautious it is beautiful.
Travis Johnson
This is definitely one of the best state parks in NY. As of yesterday, the main hiking trail that goes under the largest waterfalls and cliffs was now open.
Kayly Reinicke
Love this park! The overlook is stunning. The Indian Ladder Hike is gorgeous. I always recommend this place whenever anyone visits. The hike is about 1 mile, but there are many other trails around if you are looking for more. If you come after heavy rains or in the spring (after snow melt) the waterfalls are amazing! You walk right under them. Such a great day, when you can spend time here!
Raymond Rose
A great place to explore with your kids. Always finding new spots. Also great for fossil hunting.
Batul Dalroti
Perfect place for hiking. You will get best views 🤩 …
Michael Castellano
Although it was raining and didn't get to do everything we wanted, the park is beautiful. The welcome center was gorgeous. Everything was impeccably maintained. Can't wait to go back.
Terri Earl
Lovely place to clear your thoughts especially if you own a car and wanna enjoy the day in the mountains
Rhett Butler
Great views. Lots of areas for picnics and hiking!
2 to 3 hours is a good time frame to visit.
There is a cool story about the lands you can read while there.
Walter Clark
I like the overlook that Thacher Park has. From there you could see downtown Albany including the Empire State Plaza about 25 to 30 miles away like what this photo in the upper right hand corner. I came here with the group from Schenectady ARC on Wednesday, September 28.
Tim Zugger
Beautiful park that is mostly unknown outside of the Albany area. Great hikes and picnic areas. Great scenic beauty abounds through all aspects of the park
Sarina Jamerson
This place was so beautiful. I loved the overlook and the many waterfalls and trails. Absolutely worth the drive.
Benjamin Taylor
Great park with many amenities. The new visitor center is beautiful, feels more like a national park visitor center, very well done. Amazing views since you're right on the edge of the escarpment. Play grounds, horse shoes, disc golf, hiking...there's a lot to do here.
Andrew Pettinelli
Nice state park! Problem was there was a drought, so we saw no waterfalls. But the rocks were cool. And nice hiking too.
Manzur Rahi
This park is beautiful, great for scenic view. Peaceful and you can see the whole city from the top of it. Loved it.
joe mazzella
Great short hike with cool views. Not crowded for a Tuesday afternoon
Patrick Kelliher
People at the nature center are knowledgeable and friendly. The Rangers are unfriendly. Watched one yell at someone and take their picture for flying a kite. Seemed unnecessary way to treat a Mom & Daughter unfamiliar with the rules.
Martin Kipp
Lots of trails of course. Indian ladder trail always busy, as is the trail along the edge, the others not at all. Bring a picnic lunch, lots of tables to use. Map they give you isn't perfect though.
Wayne Clark
If you want to get a birds-eye view of downtown Albany go here. The elevation is 1,100 feet. You will find plenty of picnic tables, grills and playgrounds for the kids. It also features the scenic Indian Ladder Trail and a wonderful and highly educational visitor center.
Andrew B
Great views and hiking. Suggest sunrise at the overlook!
Aries Rose
Absolutely beautiful setting despite I only went for the trail and waterfalls but there is so much more to do!! Check out the website for more details.
Mustapha Rahim
Wonderful views, on a clear day you can see forever
Sweeping view across the horizon make the drive worth the trip.
Heidi Meister
Been going there since I was a kid, my father taking us all, and, when I had a child, I kinda passed it down to him...and, hes all grown now, but there's some certain times of the year that we never miss going..and, now, hes bringing his g-friend, her never having the opportunity to go all her younger years and all...beautiful and calming and serene...
Tek Turbiasz
Always a great place to visit
Randy rath
Only there for a short period, but excellent access for scenic views at multiple locations, cool short trail to see waterfalls and a great new visitor center.
Aadhithya Raman
Beautiful fall colors. Indian hike trail was easy with exceptional views!
Eileen Taylor
Beautiful time of year to visit! There were lots of ladybugs out. 🐞 a perfect day to go! …
Linda McLoon
Great park, with a variety of hikes, lots of open space, and a selection of play areas for children.
Kendra Gibbons
Great views, decent single pitch sport climbing, not crowded, with the coolest start to an approach (albeit a bit size discriminating).
Ila Singh
Lot of trails to hike. So many great spots to take pictures and check the fall colors.
Shiva E
Best place to visit any any weather and we have visited in the fall time it’s very beautiful and it is it waterfall and you can see the waterfall from the below. It’s a good picnic place also, it’s drivable.
Michael Brown
Absolutely gorgeous park that has magnificent views of Albany and the surrounding area. There are several overlooks at the park that are great for sunrise. Nice frisbee golf course, lots of picnic tables and lots of trails to explore. Wanted to do the Indian Ladder trail but it was closed for maintenance (this was May 1st) so I will def be back
SSNorway97
One of the easiest and scenic hikes/walks that affords wonderful views of the Capital District. Worth taking a lunch for picnic. Ice cream stand open for the summer months.
Matt
Great place to see some local views. Fall colors are already starting to show
Rachel
This had been on my list for awhile to check out, and what better time than a 70-degree May Day during quarantine! The 3+ hour drive was so worth it (got there early in the morning so parking was a breeze). The trails could be labeled a bit better (got turned around a couple times), and some parts were quite muddy. But it was an easy to moderate hike with tons of trails and breathtaking views
Chrissy F
Beautiful views and nice hike along the cliff! I went here as a kid, and now I'm bringing my children...the visitor center is an amazing addition!!
Sam Pryor
Lovely state park! Decent visitor center and gorgeous views. I'd highly recommend to friends!
Cait Hil
Always beautiful. From all days and all skies. All year for you and I. A NY treasure. Bring some prayers.
Lindsay Snure
Thatcher Park has something for everyone! Easy walks, hikes, waterfalls and breathtaking views of the Capital Region!
Kim Gismervik
A beautiful place for a hike or just to hang out and enjoy great views. Not too far from Albany, lots of parking areas, picnic tables and a beautiful new visitors center.
Dirk Gieser
While you are there -: if you are looking for a fun adventure check out WildPlay high ropes adventure.
Daniel Naylor
Amazing Nature and views. Very clean and accessable.
Steven Rohl
Excellent place, just so much to see and explore. Views are amazing. Trails are nice, just be careful and followed all rules so no one gets hurts. Highly recommend it
Donna Rickey
Finally, a waterfall to see, with all the rain we had. Beautiful and we'll maintained. Beautiful Fall day
Gregory N.
Been going here for years, always a good place for the kids too. Short scenic hike on the Indian Ladder trail should always be done. Park at one end and then make a loop out of it by walking the trail them around the top back to your ride.
Many places to picnic too, available grills and tables. Hiking and biking can be done above the park. Even had concessions (check hours) if you didn't pack a lunch.
Great place to check out a sunrise on a clear morning. Get outside and stay there.
Tom Pep
Pack a picnic lunch. Bring a good book. Some binoculars. Take some folding chairs and enjoy the view from the overlook. Always a little cooler on hot days.
Ellie Hunt
Always a new hike or location that inspires. Once you get past the paid parking, you're set.
Marta Jaremko
We took the Indian Ladder trail. It was stunningly beautiful. If you are in good shape, it's pretty easy, but if you're not in good shape (like me), it's a little challenging. But it was TOTALLY worth it. There were two waterfalls that were furiously pounding down water because of the recent heavy rains. We got to walk underneath them. They were so loud but so beautiful and dramatic. There are amazing rock formations along the way. If you are drawn to geology in any form, you will love this trail. We went mid November so we basically had the trail to ourself. Trekking poles helped in some of the steeper parts. It was also quite muddy in spots. And there are a lot of stairs. Totally worth it. Some sweet views.
Sarah Greene
I grew up going here, hiking, picnicking and making memories with friends and family. I live in NC now and I've brought many friends to this spot and they've all fallen in love with the view and fresh mountain air. I make it a point to go to Thacher Park every time I go to NY. Much love for this whole park. 💖 …
Richard Trierweiler
Great park for hiking, trail running, climbing and XC skiing when there is snow.
Kaylee La Spisa
Super cool and out of the way park! Always worth the drive for the sense of 'outside civilization'. Picnic tables everywhere, a disk golf course, ample parking and some really sweet trails like Indian Ladder. Waterfalls included. Hold onto young children and adventures though and DO NOT throw rocks off the edge of the escarpment, it is really common for climbers and hikers to be down there. Really very cool, nice bathrooms at the visitors center. What a view! You can see the Vermont Green Mountains, Albany, the Hudson river valley all that stuff, sick!
Daniel Marshall
Great place for a hike? The view is fantastic.
James Comegys
Heavily visited but spectacular over look of the capital region. Watched the sunrise partial eclipse.
Kim Gurney
Beautiful views from Hailey cave. Pavilion great size for family get together. Rest rooms nicely maintained.
Mahtab Chowdhury
If you cant made to visit Niagara waterfall on ure visit then visit here. The trails are breathtaking through the falls. Enjoy a whole day here with ure family over here, bring water and foods, you can do bbq over here.
bill ryan
One of the areas great escape. Excellent views of the region from atop thatcher Park. Excellent trails and plenty of areas for family and friends picnics.
C. Calvert
Pretty popular in the late summer up to Indian Ladder, even on weekdays. If you're there for a picnic, there's lots of places with tables and nice views. If you're there for a hike, there's miles of well maintained trail that aren't heavily populated.
Rimi Dey
Thacher park is a wonderful spot to go for an easy hike or a picnic. It's very family friendly and dog friendly. Some people do walk their dog off-leash and do not pick up after their dog(s), so be aware of that as you leisurely stroll along the trail admiring the panoramic views and wildlife. The newly built visitor center is really nice. There's a lot of information regarding the formation of the Helderberg escarpment and fun activities for kids. They have comfortable Adirondack chairs on the deck area to lounge in and a well manicured lawn to roll around, if fancy strikes. I think you can even rent out the 1st floor for weddings or parties. The park and facilities are clean and well maintained. During the fall you get a beautiful panoramic view of the bright foliage. This spot is also very popular for viewing the 4th of July fireworks, however it gets very crowded so make sure you get there early to snag a prime spot on the overlook. Overall a very nice spot to spend the day at.
Unlikely Hiker
I hike here all the time! Pick a map up from the new amazing visitor center and you can hike all day long!!
Nigel McKee
Really short, easy little walk on the Indian ladder trail, cool cliffs and a (pretty weak when I went) waterfall you can walk behind. Also great views from the top. Definitely recommend this place.
Stefan Copil
Excellent views from this tabletop mountain spot. The visitor center has excellent information of the geology of the area
Joseph Stacey
Great park for hiking, picnicking, letting the kids play and so much more. Super nice visitor center and hiking the Indian Ladder trail.
Matt Martoccio
Went with the cub scout den and walked Indian Ladder Trail. The boys thoroughly enjoyed it and my son wanted to go back the next day. After the trail they played on the playground which has very nice "flooring" of chopped up tires. I also had a blast, not liking hiking I did very much enjoy this walk.
Christopher Lentakis
Very beautiful park with a restaurant on the scenic overlook, Garden Bistro 24, based out of slingerlands. Ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, and more! Worth the trip from schenectady or wherever you live!
Cass Young
Beautiful and spectacular place to hike and explore!!
Glen Feulner
Beautiful place, great walk/hike
Debra Bailey
Great place to get out into nature. The overlook should be the first stop to view miles of nature and the distant buildings of downtown Albany.
Love the Indian trail with waterfall.
Marie Cupo
The rock climbing is new and kind of risky right now, bring a helmet. People who aren't careful have been pulling out huge rocks from routes, and sometimes people think it's funny to throw garbage off the top of the cliff (non-climbers).
The area is beautiful, it's exciting to see new sport climbing. I hear the caving is pretty cool too!
Syed Hussain
Amazing views and well maintained. Will definitely return during the spring and fall.
Brendan Harnett
Amazing natural feature with good family and child friendly facilities and programs.
Alicia Ross
Photographed a wedding here a few weeks back. Beautiful views and event building was gorgeous but AC wasn't working at the time. Tough for a summer wedding but maybe just had a bad day?
Jay Stokes
Great park! Excellent signage although some is very old. Beautiful views. Very nice visitor center and staff. Played disc golf and the course is fun! $6 to park for the day.
Dawn McDaniel
Absolutely gorgeous park. Great easy hiking trails.
s bhattacharjee
Gorgeous hiking trails suitable for all fitness level, plenty of camping spots. The Indian ladder trail is beautiful. It's hard to imagine wilderness so close to Albany. The $6 daily entry fee is a bit on the higher side, so plan on coming early and enjoy the area as long as you can.
Jeffrey Baez
A treasure just outside of Albany, perfect for an escape into nature! The park is open year-round and offers hikes that are both dog and family friendly. The overlook is amazing, especially in summer during 4th of July fireworks. This place has history. Come back again and again to discover new areas, trails, hike to the waterfall, and more!
Moishy Schwartz
Very nice parks and trails and picnic areas where you could also make a bbq grill !!!!!!
And also park for kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Davis D. Janowski

Evan Workstus
Very nice place to walk around and enjoy the views.
Ashlinn Withers
This is always my first choice to go when looking for a quick, local hike or just a quiet place to sit. The view is always beautiful, no matter the weather. They do a great job of keeping this park and the visitor's center maintained. I love that the visitor's center is so interactive with knowledge for people of any age.
Rick Hunt
Beautiful!!! It was dried up but I bet the waterfall is beautiful when it rains or after snow melt

Jack Shea
Incredible views and great fossil finding spots in the streams
Saterra NaJai
Such a peaceful place. Almost makes you feel like you are taken back in time. Looking at the trees and all of the untouched land on the trails it’s great. Good place to get away from all the shenanigans of the city.
Judith Jenkins
So cool! Lots of history and an amazing view.
Sue Kirlew
Beautiful park. Definitely will be going back.
John Haywood
Great park with awesome views and a lot of nice waterfalls. Plenty of hiking trails and places for cookouts and picnics. Newly renovated bathrooms, and newly renovated pavilions available for rent. Disc golf course, visitor center, and rock climbing. There is also an adventure course for children and adults.
Mark Roemke
So much water from yesterday's rains going over the waterfall.

Raymond Deliz
Great place for picnics, BBQ's or any outdoor gatherings. Lots of hiking trails and there's a waterfall. Good place to enjoy nature.
Liza Taylor
Beautiful overlook. I hadn't been there in 40 years since my mom took me. This trip i took my daughter who had never been. We took a few pictures but didn't stay long as my grandson was asleep in the car. Definitely going back in fall with cooler weather and the turning of the leaves.
Tom Smith
Best park in Albany. Great short hikes.
Bryan French
Beautiful park. We rented a pavilion for a bridal shower. We weren’t told there was a park entrance fee when booking ($6) but it wasn’t the end of the world. I wish the pavilion was a little closer to the restroom and had electric but it all turned out to be okay. The views at the overlook were breathtaking!
Magda Teter
Overall a great park. We did a nearly 10 mile hike from Hops rest/parking are to the Glider Cliff. Some sections at the beginning were really muddy. The long path section leading to the Glider Cliff was also horrible, we recommend to go on the so called " unofficial" escarpment trail, accessible from the Thatcher State Water Treatment plant for the final stretch to the Glider Cliff. There's absolutely no reason to be on the LP at the end there. Otherwise nice hike, with beautiful views. Peaceful in the morning, got more crowded around 11.
Michael Ceraso
Beautiful State park, lots of fun, especially @ Wildplay!
Jesse
Awesome park to check out w great overlook of Albany County.

Jaclinn Showalter
Went with my dog, this is the Indian Ladder trail. Great views, it was raining, but still worth it.
Rena Correia
Really nice views of the valley with a walking trail along route the rim. We were there during a hawk migration count... what a treat!! There was a lady there who rehabilitates hawks and other birds... she had a juvenile red tailed hawk, a turkey vulture, a broad winged hawk and a few others. The park runs many different programs such as these for all interests!! There was a wedding reception while we were there and I heard they had a car show last weekend showing a new state trooper car! Check out the park .... you'll find it very interesting!
Moh “City’s Tourist” Ka
Great place to visit. Give you a nice view of Albany and a breath of fresh hair. The park has available trail great for your daily running or walking exercise. The park also has picnic areas , bathrooms and a welcoming center. Check the website / welcoming center for activities that take place in the park throughout the summer such as zip lining.
Linda Wolfe

Mayur R Menon
Fun place. For an outing or bbq party. Or maybe try out the Indian Wells trail.
Gloria E
It's been years since I've been to Thatcher Park. My son and I went for a beautiful hike Saturday morning. I will definitely be back sooner then later. The views never get old and the trails are perfect for beginners and for those who enjoy being challenged. Nice to see so many people out and appreciating nature.

Loved it here. Great trail and little parks for the kiddos. Alot of people were out grilling and having picnics
John-Paul Lafata
My favorite place for a quick hike. Thacher park offers many trials for hikers of all skill levels. The Indian ladder trail is pretty tame and safe enough to enjoy with children and features water falls, a short cave and beautiful scenic views! Definitely a must see if you're visiting the Capital Region!
Mehwish Qazi
Just love the view! Better to visit in summer as it’s pretty chilly up there.

Shanna Rhodes
I would and will highly recommend this place to everyone. So beautiful. My boyfriend and I brought our boys to go on the trails and then afterwards have a barbecue. The overview is beautiful. A really nice place to go and get away with your family or friends.
Stephany McKinley
This is my happy place. I try to go every weekend
Greg Eichensehr
Absolutely love this place. It has almost everything you need to have a great day. Hiking, recreation area, picnic tables. All it needs is a swimming area. If you want a day to just relax and enjoy the views, come here. If you want to get a workout and go rock climbing or hiking, come here. So worth the drive and the 6 dollars to park. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a nature getaway.
James Robertson
They need to mark off the parking available in each camp site so that other campers won’t intrude on others camping sites🤬🤬🤬
Sure the camp guy site next to mine was parked in my spot …
Rob Sklenarik
This is one of the most unique and breath taking parks in the north east.
Raymond Christie
It seems smaller than when I was a kid. But I have to say the views are amazing. The return to nature, with an ability to get peace and tranquility. The only downside was a charge for parking. But in this day and age $6 is pretty cheap.
Jess Joch
Thacher Park is always one of my favorite places in the capital region! So beautiful and quiet. There are plenty of trails to explore and things to enjoy like grille pits, pavilions to enjoy events and the new visitors center!
Jason Goldberg
Great place to hike
Palash Goyal
One of the gems in albany for hikers of all level. A must visit place
Kristin Horton
The park was beautiful and the trail was amazing once we found it. You see we only seen a sign by the entrance pointing to a area where the trail was but that was the only sign. Also, it was difficult to find the waterfall's, we didn't manage to find it in our visit but we hope to visit again and find them. Otherwise, the hike was beautiful and peaceful. I loved how safe I felt with the fences surrounding the whole thing, I very much recommend Thacher State Park!
Kallyne Ryan
Wish the trails were open
Joe Suen
Nice walking and hiking trails, dog friendly
Charles Keeler
Beautiful visitors center and hiking trails!
Sean Trackey
Love this place so much.. the views and trails are great and there are hidden places for kids to play all over. My son loves them and always enjoys going. Unfortunately I haven't been down Indian ladder in two years because it's always closed. I proposed to my wife in this park. It's amazing.
Jeff A
Beautiful area , easy hike . Generally safe for kids. Picnic areas and grills as wel make for a close place to enjoy
American Life
Phenomenal views and nice trails.. what a great time
Anne Sinopoli
Great park, with BEAUTIFUL views, play grounds, disc golf, easy trails, nice bathrooms, and parking. The most popular trail, Indian Ladder trail, is frequently closed for safety concerns, be sure to check the park website if you're specifically going for that.
Anthony Quinones
Nature is always wonderful. Great place to take the kids; there are basketball courts, awesome open fields to throw a football around, you can enjoy a nice picnics or have a cookout, but just remember to bring the bug repellent spray and some sunblock. Have fun!
Shannon Kauderer
What a lovely time! Well taken care of trails which were fun to walk, including waterfalls, caves, and such. The parking was excellent. Generally dog and stroller friendly, although some trails do not support them.
Sunanda G
We really loved the parts of the park we went to. It's a huge park and therefore didn't looked crowded. We went to only small picnic areas and they were nice. Beautiful view.
A. C.
Beautiful views, well kept trails and clearly marked. Looking forward to visiting again.
James Smith Sr

Indian trail with waterfall access can be done with 3+ child .
Cora Rose
The view is breathtaking, so peaceful. I love it.
Irina Kustov
Beautiful views, nice trail to go for a walk. Watch kids closely so they would not climb over the rails. Picturesque views at summer or even better at leaves changing season. The last time we went there they had a Garden Bistro open, where they make delicious crepes.
Michael Walker
Beautiful views especially during the fall
Jennifer Magi
I have always loved visiting Thatcher Park. It's views are breathtaking and there are many trails to walk. There's a playground for young children to have fun in and there are several picnic areas. It's a great place to go to and be one with nature.
Adam Herman
Park was beautiful. Will be coming back here
Zhuoyao Song
great place for BBQ and trail walk
Paul Cuddihy
Cool hike. Great views. Nice and informative visitor center.
Mansoor Khan
We try to get away to Thatcher Park for short easy hikes. Great for kids and adults of all ages. The Indian Ladder trail may be challenging for the elderly and toddlers.
I took some photos in the Fall a few years back. It remains just as captivating in the summer. I always find it relaxing when I visit and always feel like I'm leaving too soon.
Bratin Sengupta
This place is amazing. Present at a much higher elevation than Albany yet so close to Albany
Jeremy
This is a great place for all types of events; I have been here for graduations and weddings. The view of the capital district is amazing you can see as far as the eye can see. The nature trails contains rocks that have fossils and the rock formations are specialized. There is a really cool waterfall that you use to be able to hike under but a lady got injured from a falling rock and the trail is now closed but there is still a lot to do and see.
Mountain Claw
This is a very well maintained park. Seems busy, but there's a reason. The views are spectacular, the woods are cool and the water falls are inspiring. Only a half hour from Albany.
Trevor
Beautiful park! Great long trails and short trails. You do have to pay for parking, but it’s only $6 for a car a day. Great place to go with the family, and they have plenty of tables to bring food.
John Lacy
If you're into hinking big mountains and taking that picture looking down from a peak this is not for you. If you're looking to be able to see huge magnificent waterfalls then this place also isn't for you. But if you're just into a nice nature walk with lots of photo opportunities this is definitely the place for you. There's multiple waterfalls (not very big ones) that are perfect for taking pictures. There's also multiple different trails to take and is a great place to just go walk for the day. It's also usually pretty quiet there too.
Hippie Love
The serene environment just captivates one's soul.
Lukee Forbes
Amazing view s for video and pictures
Aric Snyder
Great views. Easy trails.
Mark
Despite its popularity it's a very well maintained park. The visitors center is very nice. There are trails that are more family-oriented and trails that are more rugged.
Michelle Bowen
I didn't realize the nature center was closed Tuesday's, so shame on me for picking the wrong day to visit. Beautiful place to have a picnic, but not much else to do with a 6 and 7 year old. Staff was very friendly, though!
Daniel Lee
Indian ladder trail is very nice. A little bit of going down the steps and then up. But the walk will take you to teo or three waterfalls.
Brad Lancaster
Amazing views, waterfalls, trails. A must and NYS park!
Teri Lange
Great place to have group celebrations outdoors. Pavilion rental is the best thing to do for larger groups.
Mike Blake
Beautiful view and trails
Christina Martell
Beautiful place to enjoy with the whole family
Bob Cappetti
Loved it! I grew up around there, end it they have upgraded it tremendously! It is now very modern inside the information center. The trails are safe well marked. The paths are paved and there are numerous new facilities along the trails and the views or unobstructed and picturesque.
Graham Wolfe
One of my favorite parks in the capital region.
I wish they kept the website more up to date though, the Indian ladder trail is closed due to Covid, but when we checked before going, it said it was open.
Mildly disappointing but there are still cool places to walk around up there without the trail.
Raymond C
I go here almost weekly to go for walks. It's a well maintained state park with the great Indian Ladder Trail. Check it out in the Fall for some beautiful colors. It can get a little busy on weekends, but it is a large area that can accommodate many people.
Sharon Gotay
Beautiful as always
Ram B
One of the most well-maintained visitor centers I've been to. We did the ladder trail, which was short but breathtaking. Absolutely worth a visit. We also stayed at Thompson lake campground for a few nights with family and it was a great experience.
Josh Peacetree
Easy hiking, fantastic views. A fun and educational Nature Center. Lots of parking and grassy areas for picnicking (or just relaxing. Fire/ BBQ pits. Playground, pavilions, frisbee golf and kiddy zip line. A more intense zip line/ ropes course just down the road at How High (currently closed due to the pandemic).
Noah J.-Todaro Mann
Beautiful scenery. A pain in the butt to get to from the thruway, but it’s worth the turns and twisty and winding roads
Nevin Smith
Lots of hiking trails. Great disc golf course. Plenty of play space and picnic area. Visitor center is a must. A few exhibits, few educational.
Matt T
Beautiful views, plenty of parking and things like picnic tables, grills and restrooms. There's also a couple of playgrounds for little ones. It's kept neat with a office that's easy to locate for those looking for information or help.
A couple of cons would be the pay to park and I often found the main trail closed for maintenance. Falling rocks have injured and killed a few people in the past years.
Dawn Carolus
It's such a beautiful place to spend the day!
Randall Ruiz
Beautiful day at Thacher park, my sister and I had our first cookout of the year. There were lots of people there but only a few using grills. Food always tastes better from the grill.
Donald StJohn
Beautiful fall foliage viewing spot
Logan Lucile
Lovely site. Great view, I think the trails are opened back up: don't quote me.
Lillian Cardell
Beautiful fall day! Impressive views from the ledge.
Lee Baker
Great park, great views. Nice open spaces and picnic tables. Some construction right now for some new building, but trails are open. If your going to go on the under the falls train with little ones, be advised there are no guard rails for most of the path and it is impassable with a stroller.
Dragon V
Great views. beautiful especially in the fall seasons.
Thomas Cronin
Beautiful park not far from Albany. Great areas for group picnics and hiking.
Rebecca Anderson
I went when some of the trails were closed, but the park was still enjoyable. I stopped at the overlook view and it was breathe taking! Plenty of parking spots and restrooms all throughout the park. Maps of the grounds are available at the visitors center.
Josh VH
Hands down one of the best state parks in the area! The views are stunning and the trails are abundant for hiking. A lot of money has been invested to make this park even better with rock climbing, mountain biking, and a new high ropes obstacle course!
Ari B
Beautiful park, love this place. So peaceful and serene!
Kush S
Well marked and maintained state park. There are plenty of parking spaces for specific trail points. Parking costs $6 for the day. There is zipline and other adventure activities too.
Lars Wendt
Beautiful views with nice hikes and waterfalls when it rains.
Kelly Lee
Great hiking place
Mark Henderson
I've been going to the state park since I was a child. There is a fantastic trail called Indian ladder that goes down the rocky ledge then alongside the cliff base and then back up again. In the spring and summer you can normally see seasonal waterfalls. Sometimes, in the early spring the waterfall carves out in a dome of ice forming a natural arch, which is truly unique. Along the trail are two small caves, the one that's deepest goes back about 25 ft. It's great for little exploring children with flashlights. You probably should bring insect repellent in the spring and summer. And the trail isn't completely foolproof, meaning there aren't rails along some of the steep edges. So you still have to be careful.
The park also has added some new features such as a playgrounds with zip lines, and a new Visitors Center.
Christopher Parker
We visited the southern trails which many people do not go to and some need a bit more marking. There are still some really nice views and fun geology.
dave norton
Special place worth the ride.
If all you can do is drive, there are great views to see. By all means hike or walk for spectacular views. A year round treasure
D Johnson
Great place to spend an afternoon exploring the wilderness a short drive from Albany
Dana Capili
So many places to picnic and grill. There are covered pavilions. They are picnic tables and benches everywhere. Bring your own grill or use the ones in the park. Go to the Visitor's center for activities and sight seeing.
Paid parking. $6 I believe.
Many trails.
No trash cans available. Take home whatever you bring. A family left a whole bag of trash at the park, and it was disgusting. Not much staff to pick up after people.
kristen byrns
There's just no place else quite like it! This place has such amazing breathtaking views!
K Shakya
Good View, peaceful, easy and free parking
Shibananda Das
Great location for hiking. Also the views are blissful to the eyes. Have been there few times. The fall adds a new charm with its color.

Rijwanul Hasib
Beautiful place for picnic and hike.
Eric Luper
One of our favorite local parks to visit. And now they have a great visitor's center. Be sure to seek out the Indian Ladder Trail that leads under the waterfalls, and the ziplines for the kids. There is also a hike that brings you through some tight crevices. Bring a lunch and take some time to explore and enjoy the amazing views!
tjguze
Fabolous.. Great piece to enjoy the great outdoors
Michael LaBonte
Took a trip out here for a professional family photo shoot. Very clean park. Some of the most breathtaking views I've ever seen!
Jane Zalsky
It's a big state park with lots of fields and some hiking trails. Great place to fly a kite. There is a frisbee golf course which was a lot of fun. One trail follows the edge of the escaroment/cliff which is very scenic. Indian ladder was a short hike down to the bottom of the escarpment. The trail is one way ending at the visitor center. Indian Ladder was a bit crowded but everyone was respectful of the masks or 6' rule.
Wonderful day. You could make a whole day of this place and bar b que or picnic. Plenty of picnic tables and space for a family.
One traditional play ground and 2 smaller adventure climbing type playgrounds.
James Fox
Always an awesome time at Thacher Park! A great place to take visitors to see classic Upstate NY beauty especially during the fall! The Indian Ladder Trail is a quick and easy hike that all fitness levels can enjoy! Lots of nature to explore, very easy to find fossils of seashells, frogs, newts, etc! Beautiful views of Albany at the overlook! Lots of room for picnics and playing sports or running. Playgrounds are available at one end of the park.
Tanner
Very nice workers and very interesting history, enjoyed the Indian ladder trail
Leonard Goodkin
Thacher Park is a great place to hike, enjoy views of 2-3 states at once on clear days, take photos, and enjoy history both natural and human. My kids love the tall slide and climbing wall at the visitor center, and they can't get enough of the waterfalls. The stairs under the cliffs make for a quick and picturesque workout. Double back when you get back to the top instead of walking the flats back to your car if you want more cardio.
Areyan Taiyeb
Awesome park! Unbelievable views and even has information about the history of The Helderberg Escarpment. I recommend you to go to this park and you will see unbelievable views at 1,300 feet above sea level!
Breanna Bradley
So beautiful! Love this park, well maintained and the pavilion was great for a large party
Ivo Georgiev
Great park for all sprts of hikes!
Chris
Thatcher State Park is a fantastic capital region getaway. Most locals probably don't even realize the beautiful geological wonder that exists so close by. There are miles of trails for running and biking, simple overlooks and picnic areas, and the new visitor's center is gorgeous. Great place for the kids and family.
christine M
I visited Thatcher State Park on Halloween. It was absolutely gorgeous with the remaining foliage and recent snowfall. There was ample parking and social distancing. Certainly a local favorite for it's amazing views.
Ryan Downey
The new visitors center is very well put together and has great views from both the upper deck and lower patio. The Indian Ladder Trail is a great hike that kids and adults can enjoy together. With two waterfalls along the route you can't go wrong.
Bill Thibodeau
Excellent family experience. Going back next year again.
Richard Marr
Beautiful mountains with lots of picnic tables and charcoal grills.
Beautiful vistas and tons of trails for walking.

This park had a beautiful view, great place to take pictures & I place to sit down & grab a delicious burger. It has waterfalls & the trails go up & down so be ready for a nice cardio workout! Highly recommend..
Bryan Brown
Great disc golf course with beautiful views; very well taken care of. A couple holes are rather close to the edge of a cliff, so as long as you don't throw your disc off the cliff you're golden!
Sarah Juzapavicus
Moderately easy trails and lots of pull offs to have a BBQ or hang with friends for the day. Plus there's a beautiful view
Brian Casler360
All road ways need to be repaved, however over the last decade this park has come along way. A new visitor center, more picnic areas and still a beautiful view that can't be matched. I can't wait until the trail has been repaired and made safer to have it opened back up. This should be a must do for anyone summer vacation list. Stop by to take in the sights and have a bbq at the same time.
Thomas Fris
Love this park!
So lucky to live near by
Lisa Dwyer
Thacher is always a great place to take the kids. It's beautiful and the overlook is awesome. You can cook out here and there's even amenities for disk golf, soccer, baseball, basketball. Trails and playgrounds (when the playgrounds open again).
John Shuk
A truly unique park in New York. The scenery is both breathtaking and surprising. The Indian Ladder trail is an easy and enjoyable hike that is perfect for families and seniors. If you are in the Capitol Region and haven't yet been here, you are missing out on an experience that will change the way you look at the area.
Rosa Kirk-Davidoff
Thacher Park has some really beautiful hiking trails. I walked on the Indian Ladder Trail, which passes under waterfalls and was really cool. There's a fascinating geological history in the area, which is explained in a very nice visitors center. There's also scenic overlooks where you can see Albany.
Christopher L. Bovee de Soto
I loved the hiking trails that aren't cliffs. Which is funny, because this park is famous for them, but I liked the regular trails better.
Teresa Wilk
Beautiful park. Stunning view! Nice trail. There is something to do for every body in different age group and shape.
jeemon joy
Marvelous place..nice view..calm and relaxing
Alli Brunner
The views that you'll find here, especially on a very nice day, are astounding. The trails are not very difficult at all. The Indian Ladder trail is my favorite so far. The trails are very well marked and there are plenty of nice places to take a rest if need be. I wish there were more maps around, though.
Brittni Abriel
Beautiful visitors center with helpful staff. Due to recent trail conditions, call first if you are looking to hike the Indian Ladder Trail. If it is closed the additional trails are still well maintained and make for a nice time in nature.
Brian Christian
Nice park.
Craig Foote
Scenic views a new visitor and a great staff. This is a must stop if you are in the area must visit the Indian ladder Trail and take advantage of the great picnic sites as well as the scenic outlooks. If visiting the visitors center make sure you stop and say hello to Autumn.

One of the best state parks I have ever been to. Hiking, playgrounds, nature center, bbq areas, horseshoes, basketball court and volleyball nets means there is something there for everyone. Great place to spend a day with the family, and the views from the escarpment are breathtaking.
Sher Woei Foon
Thus beautiful park had many to offer. From finding fossils, bird watch, hiking, to fall foliage.

Huge NYS park that has a lot to explore. Uh unfortunately it was really dry when we went but the beauty was unmistakable.
John Rogers
Great place to go to relaxe, maybe have a picnic or go for a hike. Never get tired of coming here.
Fran Post
Used as a wedding venue. Beautiful setting, stunning background. The only complaint was there was NO air conditioning in the reception all and we were there on the hottest day so far this day. There is no excuse for charging such an exorbanet rental fee and provide NO AIR CONDITIONING . We had to bring our own fans. This was really unacceptable
Ashley Rubacha
What an insanely beautiful park! Went here for an invasive species training and was delighted to find such impressive views and an incredible facility. This park is clearly well-loved and well-used by the public. It was awesome to visit.
Allen Deleon
Must see for sure. Plenty of trails. Lots of picnic benches and grills. The Indian Ladder and waterfalls are very cool. The panoramic view of Albany and the Capital Region is something from a post card. Clean bathrooms available.
Meagan Bates
Always love coming up here to watch the Hawks

Just had an amazing time there. Visited 1 day back, and the fall colors were totally mesmerizing. Went through the Indian Ladder trail, which is one way now. The hike was small but absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend visiting this place in fall.
Emalani Speaks
I visit there often and have enjoyed walks and waterfalls and watching the Audubon Society counting hawks. We play horseshoes and bbq in many of the beautiful spots.
Albert Pagano
Local gem with beautiful vistas of the Albany area and Heldeberg escarpment. Picnic areas are spaced for privacy and new action park, visitors center, and high-tech playground have been added in recent years.
chase salisbury
Best place in Voorheesville to have a peaceful day with a great view! Anybody can engage in multiple activities including jogging, hiking, rock climbing, biking, bmx activities, sight seeing, camping, cooking and much more! The only downside to this this place is that they are only open until 7pm, sheriffs patrol the area and will tell you to leave.
SHUJIE XIAO
Pictures says it all 🍎 …
Amol Joge
Beautiful park for all seasons. Great place to hike in spring and summer and it’s amazing in fall. Great place picnic and taking pictures.
