Reviews of Myre-Big Island State Park
Christopher Cameron
Spent one night at Myre-Big Island State Park. The staff was very helpful and even on a Friday night we had no trouble finding a camp site. Like most other state parks, they don't want you to bring any outside firewood in, but you can purchase a bundle for $6.00. would definitely stay here again if I am ever around that area.
Melanie Senaratne
I’m new to the area and my dog and I enjoyed walking around the park. Got to see a beautiful lake. Good campgrounds to eat. And plenty of trails to explore.
Gyeoung-Jin Kang
Big Island Campground.
Campsite was not large or private, but it was a good size. There is an area set up for tent setup on the site. The bath/shower building was clean and well maintained.
Madison Williams
My parents and I drove down from the cities to do the homing club trail. The drive was easy and the park was beautiful! The homing club trail is pretty long but most of it is flat so not too bad. Lots of different scenes and things to see while exploring.
Jonathan Schulz
Beautiful place. I'm from out of town and took my sister and brother in law's dog out here for exercise. We spent about two hours walking the trails. Day permit $7.00 or $35.00 for year.
Teresa Manzella
Gorgeous scenery, loads of variety of animals and plants, nice trails, and lovely, secluded campsites made for a great weekend of camping!
Jeremy Williams
Beautiful views over the lake through the winter trees. Staff was very helpful at the entrance as well. Parking could be cheaper., but its a government thing I get it.
Marcus Corbin
One of our new favorite state parks in MN! We went camping and arrived with so much wildlife throughout the park. Deer, woodchucks, and a bunch of pelicans! Bathrooms for camping were very nicely cleaned and renovated with 6 separate showers as well. We also paddleboarded on the lake and it was very smooth and peaceful.
Joy Kell
Went here for camping and had a great time. There are trails and activities such as canoeing and kayaking. I would say that the bathrooms and other buildings have not been cleaned up and we had to clean them ourselves to make it decent. But overall it's a good place to go camping with a big group of people.
TLP Jess
Good campground. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. There was even a dish cleaning station with two sinks. Check-in was a bit chaotic with only one staff member and they were not very helpful. Planks of wood that were available for purchase were a joke, but you’re not allowed to bring in outside wood. Trails were easy to follow. Overall we had a nice time.
Casi B
Beautiful, peaceful park with well maintained trails and amenities. Signage for roads and trails could be improved, but it's a great place for hiking and while we didn't camp, the camp sites looked clean, well maintained, and private. The bathroom was one of the nicest camp site bathrooms I've ever been in, too!
Gloriann McDonald
Heading home after a long road trip and was going to stay in a cheap hotel instead of camp again, but found this state park instead. Reservation system was easy to use. Staffer helping us get checked in was very helpful and friendly. Sites are well-spaced and some have electric, so that was a plus. Would have liked the time to explore the walking trails and biking routes. Will visit again if the opportunity presents itself. I love Minnesota State Parks!
Lady with Crazy Cats
Myre-Big Island State park is awesome!all the deer that come up to the camp sites is amazing! I love seeing all the nature! I would not recommend this place to anyone who needs electric hookups or wants to run a generator! We were kicked out of the State park with no given reason, The park warden later said "I'm glad you found someplace that suits your needs better!"
The only thing we needed was some electric when it was cold and some ac when it was above 75. But that was to much for the state park! Anybody else could run a generator but we could not!
The showers at the state park are so hot they scold you I have taken showers there and had to be treated for first degree burns from the water being to hot!
My mom got told she cold not park in front of our camper crosswise because it would kill the grass! Other people did it and they said nothing to them!
Not suppose to take wood from the woods and burn it but we saw a whole bunch of people doing it!
The state park in Albert Lea MN has its favorite people and they allow them to do whatever they want to do and it spoils it for everyone else that visits there!
We got kicked out because we lived there from November 1st 2021through December 2021, came back in February for a week then back in March and kicked out memorial day weekend.

Absolutely fabulous park! Lots & lots of hiking & walking trails. Wildflowers & butterflies everywhere. Bring your camera!! Campsites are very nice. And the lake -- beautiful blue & so many different birds make their homes here. Birdwatching extravaganza! Plenty of day use areas for picnicking & family time. Much much more!
Jason Johnson
I'm glad to see the Whoa-some twins, the picture of the tree, are still up there hunting the forest lol.
David Grunst
This park is beautiful and the campground is wonderful. Each camp site has a an elevated platform with a base of woodchips for your tent. The bathrooms and showers at Big Island campground are in a brand new building and easily the best park bathrooms I've ever seen. My biggest and only complaint for the park is the available firewood. The wood we purchased appeared to be repurposed dimensional rather than logs. It was impossible to split into smaller pieces and burned really quickly.
Sarah Carsello
By far, the best state park I've been at all year that did social distancing right! Very impressed and felt very safe. Campsites were closed that were too close to other sites and group bathrooms were closed. Only individual use bathrooms and primitive toilets were open.
The park is beautiful! I loved the diversity in landscape - from wooded paths along the lake to open field prairie. The leaves were starting to turn and all of the hiking paths were beautiful!
Kerry Shaw
What a treat of a State Park. So clean, the showers were hot and brand new. We stayed on the island and enjoyed watching the sun go down over the water. We had two young deer walk across our campsite #26, a raccoon visit and an owl in the tree over our van. So many beautiful maple trees. Great stop
Joseph McGie
I loved this park and so did the kids, the site that we were at didn't have a ton of trees but many do. There were LOTS of trails to walk and the boys loved the lake and throwing rocks in it. The facilities were well kept for the most part but ran out of toilet paper and there were signs lecturing people threatening to take away toilet paper if they were kept clean. Most sites appeared to be flat and large enough for two large tents. We saw lots of wildlife and the diversity of landscape from forest to lakes to plains was nice. Unfortunately at this time of year there were lots of "stickers" or plants that like to leave thorny friends as you walk by... Stay on the trails to avoid these but... We had kids so that was an adventure.
Josh Kooistra
Very nice state park, quiet big camp sites, fun hiking/running trails with a bike path that cuts through the park. Island campground has a brand new super nice bathhouse.
Jacquelyn Smith
We really enjoyed our stay in the one camper cabin at this site, there were flush toilets very close by with running water sinks and showers too. The camp sites were closer to each other than other parks in MN so that was the only draw back for us since we like to feel more secluded. The were beautiful trails to walk and the land is all around since it is an island. Beautiful wildflowers and wildlife to watch.
D Deane
Like a lot of state parks, there was generous space between the sites. Most of them on Big Island, where we were in our trailer, were quite shaded.
The shower rooms were very nice though of the push-button variety where the temperature is not adjustable.
There are a lot of biking and hiking trails there. The white pelicans on the lake were a pleasant sight. Plenty of mosquitoes, too! We found them to be a significant downside but others seemed not to be bothered at all, sitting out without a shirt, etc. To be fair, armed with a bit of insect repellent, I don't think I got bitten even once.
Ben Cedarberg
Very nice State Park. Excellent grass hiking and paved biking trails. Lots of birds and wildlife. Good forest and savannah for wildflowers. We have stayed in both campgrounds and enjoyed both. Most sites are fairly flat and back up to trees and have some privacy. Campgrounds have a dump station.
Kevin Dirksen
A hidden from me gem. Good hiking or biking trails. Campground appeared clean and quiet. We used the more remote backpack campsites electing to kayak in rather than hike.
The only negative was road noise from I35 across the lake that was bothersome at night. I am unsure if this is site specific to our site (BP1) or not.
Saw plenty of deer, bald eagles, hawks, geese, a large flock of american pelicans, a couple pheasants, and heard great horned owls as well as barred owls.
Minus the road noise it was a great unplugged experience that exceeded expectations.
Daniel Randolph
One of my favorite parks. The camping is nice and there is something for everyone there. Also, the deer and bird watching might be the best of any MN state park.
Suzy Preston
Loved this State Campground. Tons of full grown trees with shady areas. Beautiful nature with birds singing. Good fishing, clean showers and bathrooms. Friendly people and was able to get my data service to check on bad weather conditions. Rained a lot when we visited but was still able to enjoy hiking and a bit of fishing.
M's Adventures
Some parts of the trail were more scenic than others, and in parts you don't have any trees/shade. You get a lot of interstate noise while hiking as well.
Nicholas Reichl
Absolutely awesome!! I visit MBI-State Park as much as I possibly have time for! Fun outdoor adventure. Enjoy the great outdoors an explorer minnesota camping an wildlife.
Brian Moreland
This park is a wonderful experience. The campground has nice level sites and the bathrooms are exceptionally clean. Hiking trails are easy to follow. There are multiple species of birds to see, as well as other wildlife like deer, squirrel, and rabbits. The ranger at the visitor center was very helpful and pleasant to talk to. A top notch experience.
Tim Hamel
Not a spectacular park like some, but still a nice trail around the island right by the shore. Lots of trees on the island as well.
AMy Boutelle
Very pretty. No play ground for the kids and small tent pads. Clean bathrooms
Rob Guenther
Great state park! Lots of wild life! We saw deer, beavers, pelicans, and lots of song birds! The campsite was great, rangers were helpful, and camp hosts super friendly. I'm sure we'll be back!
Daniel Loudenback
Myre-Big Island is a phenomenal state park. Well managed and maintained with activities for everyone. Hiking, biking, fishing, boating, wildlife observing - it can all be done here. For a more rustic experience you can hike in or boat in to the backpacking sites. The best part - it's only 1.5 hours from the Twin Cities!
Beth H-J
Awesome bathhouse!!! Extremely brazen raccoons! They were sneaking into the picnic basket while we cooked dinner and tried to go into our van between our legs! Car alarms kept going off throughout the night (raccoons or nuts falling from trees), I don't know why people kept arming their car alarm!?! As soon as we climbed into the tent for the night, we could hear chaos at the picnic table (those buggers tested anything left out). Eventually it quieted down and we slept peacefully... We paid $36 for NO electricity/non-resident.
Robin Mickley
This is one beautiful and clean State Park! The staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. A beautiful lake too.
Emily Wolff
Beautiful! What a beautiful place with very easy hikes which makes it perfect for everyone. Great place to spend a day and get away from it all.
Lisa Brown
Camp site had nice large pad and was roomy. If you stay on the island, it is shaded for the most part, which make early May and June favorible to less bugs, then mid-summer. Lake is good for paddleboarding/canoeing/kayaking not so hot for fidhing as it is s shallow lake nearby bike trails nice! Beautiful trip
Roush RTR
Mosquitoes are no joke but trails are decent, worth the trip.
EMARS77
Great spacious sites. Stayed on the island, plenty of trees for hammock camping. Clean bathrooms and we'll kept. One of the friendliest staff I've expert at s state park. Quiet hours enforced, was very peaceful despite being full. Would absolutely come back to!
Todd Cordes
Beautiful park and nice campground. The island restrooms are dated and need to be improved. Still a recommend place.
Hannah Lang
Beautiful park. There were so many animals here in the middle of the day. We walked by 2 deer with a fawn, a beaver, and a chipmunk.
Casey McKenzie
Soo beautiful. Booked one of the backpack campsites and hiked in. Site was wonderful, views were amazing. Will return in the future.
Emily R
Beautiful park and very friendly staff! I came and backpack camped and the site was fantastic. Before going I was really worried about the bugs with how much of this park is by water but I wasn't bothered at all. To fellow backpackers, I would note that the number one and two sites are right across the lake from the group camp on little island so you aren't as isolated as you think. Based on the park website, i think they are understaffed so the party over at the group camp when I was there lasted until 4 am since there was so park ranger to tell them to be quiet. Just a heads up!
Roxanne Molskness
Fun snowmobile trails. Saw lots of deer and even an opossum. Lovely wooded area for exploring. Saw people enjoying cross country skiing and hiking. I’m sure it’s beautiful year round.
John Mathew
I really appreciated this camp ground. I camped on the bog island. I liked the paths and dock. One big problem is the island campground has a bold raccoon that boths you even in the day and will walk up to you. Carry a big stick and defend your ground. I hope that they capture and remove the raccoon. Facilities were well maintained and Nice hot showers.
Luke Gorski
Great Park! Mosquitoes are the worst along the southwestern shore, but are no problem inland and on the east side of the park. The park's trail system has three loops. I call them the Prairie Loop, the Esker Loop, and the Island Loop. The Prairie Loop connects to both other loops, and is 4 miles. It covers the west side of the park. The Esker Loop is 3 miles and is on the northeast side of the park, and it covers marshland and wooded forests. The mosquitoes are no problem in this area, even along the lakeshore. The island loop is 1.5 miles and is the most forested of the three. You will likely find mosquitoes on the north and west sides of the loop, but the rest of the loop is quite pleasant. Overall the park has a great trail system, and it will be better when mosquitoes calm down.
Benjamin Hubert
A phenomenal state park with LOTS of trails and camp sites.
The trails are very well marked and maintained.
The campground was a great experience with lots of shade on the sites.
Clean and well maintained bathrooms.
D.J. Remer
Absolutely beautiful state park. Last place we stayed in MN and it will be remembered fondly
Mike Illig
Great hidden gem of a park, wonderful wildlife everywhere. Hiking trails were top notch
Roxanne Estrada
This is a fabulous State Park, it starts with the well knowledgeable and quick witted rangers and camp ground host's and just continues with the beautiful breath taking sites!!
Sherri Wallis
Excellent state park!! Love their camping facilities and look forward to returning again next year! Great wildlife..just running free!
Deanna Haggerty
Its a beautiful park with so many trails for hiking, cross country skiing or biking. The lake is very shallow but great for kayaking.
Tommie Anaya
Very awesome. Nice and clean.will visit again.
Ira Mitchell
Nice campsites. Some are much more private than typical state park sites.
Jacob Vestering
Had an amazing time. Kayaking. Fishing. Camping.
Jackie Hilgers
Lots of wildlife here! Raccoons, deer, fox, beaver and that's only from one weekend! We stayed on the island campground. Nice sized sites and very much shaded. Only a few mosquitoes out at dusk. We stayed there in July on a weekend where the temps were in the upper 70's for a high.
John Dean
Surprised to see it not very full on a Saturday. The campgrounds are a fair distance from the office which is a little different. Two separate campgrounds and one has a little more sun than the other.
Cameron Quick
We kayaked around a couple bays and snapped some wildlife shots. The water was a little choppy but nothing we can't handle. I'd like to check out the water trail when I have a bit more time.
Christa Moen
Beautiful beautiful State Park canoe and kayak rentals cabin rentals and a great place to camp fun for the family all around they do have facilities to shower and use restrooms and they do have an activity board they have activities going on for children all the time and they also teach basic survival skills
Brad Skogheim
Beautiful state park! Lots of nice trails!
Emily Paulson
Very friendly park! Some of the trails are paved and accessible for mobility devices, and all trails are wide. Additionally, the staff were all friendly and helpful. A special shout-out to Penny! I ran into an issue halfway through my weeklong trip, but she got it sorted out and ensured I was able to enjoy the rest of my vacation.
This is a great park for barefoot hiking or running. Most of the trails are paved grass or wide woodland dirt trails. I was worried there wouldn't be enough hiking, but between the park hiking trails, the lake, and the bike path, I had plenty of entertainment or the week.
As advertised, there are LOTS of birds. Pelicans, owls, herons, hawks, crows, turkeys, songbirds.
I stayed in the backpack wall tent. It was right on the lake and quite quiet, although only a two-mile walk to the Fox campground for water. I brought a 6" air mattress for sleeping on. I did not use a bug net for sleeping.
Audrey Sparks
Beautiful location. Well maintained with wonderful facilities. Excellent hiking biking kayaking Etc. if you're a bird watcher it's an absolute Paradise.
Kristen McNally
Beautiful place to explore! The lake is gorgeous, no motor boats only kayaks. The trails are very well manicured and I'd you love bird watching it's for you.
Be sure to pack plenty of bug spray or try to visit in the early spring or late fall.
Scott Kelly
This is a nice well-kept campground. That is a mix of primitive and electric only sites.. sites are spacious with most having trees between each of the campsites for privacy. And her in number of water stations in each camping loop where you can fill up your RV as well as an RV dump station that has a separate spigot for water fill also. There are a couple of primitive vault toilets as well as a restroom and shower facility in between both loops. The reservation was $24 a night but when you get to the office to check in you also have to purchase a $7 per day vehicle permit so that you can drive your personal vehicle and the park. So with I told vehicle and the additional vehicle it was an extra $14 per night. Oh no it's a really nice campground I'll be a little pricey for primitive camping. We're averaging 10 to 12 Mbps on T-Mobile and probably about the same for Verizon. #rvdump

You got to visit this park in the fall! Leaves are beautiful. We were there October 18, 2017. A wonderful day, a beautiful experience...
Jerry Hardway
Awesome remote place to see wildlife and hike. Great well kept trails. We went early morning on a weekend and didn't see anyone there other than overnight campers. Dog friendly park with hours of good trails and being in nature. Also AMAZING bathrooms.
Mandy Townsend
Looks like a beautiful park. Unfortunately it was pouring rain during my overnight visit so I didn't see much. Was a bit muddy but otherwise a great site.
DJ DRU
Great park, pretty secluded camping. Campsites are better on the island, kind of close but lots of trees, just a few camping this time of year.
Mary Spencer
I loved camping here. Clean restrooms And Showers. Great hiking trails. $20 a night with out power, $30 with.
Wanderlust1
First I go to the State Parks to hike. The island was cool but several of the trails where closed for construction. Would have been helpful if this information was on the website or on map board @ the picnic area - it was clearly an on going project. Drove off the island - parking wasn't really clearly marked. But if you stay straight when you enter the park you will find a little parking area that will drop you in at the marsh & connection of other trails. Nice mix of rustic, mowed & paved trails. Beautiful fall colors. Hits all the nature points woods, fields & water. Hiked 10 miles & covered most of the park.
Ron Hubert
Great park, miles of trails, awesome campsites and very nice facilities. Great place to enjoy the outdoors.
,,
One of my absolute favorite state parks in MN. They have 2 fairly unique campgrounds and a few great backpacking spots that are a pretty easy hike in but feel very remote due to their proximity to the water. The hike around myre big island is one fo the most beautiful Minnesota has to offer in the fall and their new updated bathroom and shower facilities are fantastic.
Sheryl D
Nice park and the hiking by the lake was great! Would definitely go back if I'm in the area.
David Medford
It was a nice park, though we only stayed one night. The campgrounds were very clean and well maintained. The bathrooms were amazing for a campground! Great place to stop if you are on a long car trip, or a fun place to go if you are looking for a day trip/weekend getaway!
PK Lee
Beautiful island with lots of trails.
Campbell Hawk
Great campsite. Decently private from neighboring sites, nice fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Nice walking paths around the park. Paid $22 for one night, which felt expensive since there aren't showers or anything. Pit toilets and water spigots are open.
Saw a wild turkey and some beautiful deer. Not many people around. Most sites are empty
Tammy Livingston
Really beautiful, well-maintained park.
Sarah Wick
Really beautiful park. Easy to get to (though there is some highway noise at the white fox campground), well maintained trails, and very clean facilities. Next time we'll be renting paddleboards!
Mike Campbell
We really enjoyed the park and the campgrounds. The trails are well taken care of, and there is a lot of natural beauty to take in while there. The camp spaces are large enough and spaced out well. I love the mature trees that help shade the spots from the heat (which we did not have in this trip, unfortunately). Everything was very clean, but the shower rooms are a bit dated.
Each campsite does come with a picnic bench and fire pit with grill attached. I point this out because not every campground had the grill feature and we use that a lot when we camp. Also, the campers around us were very respectful and the area was very peaceful. Yes, kids rode bikes around, but that's what they should be doing.
What makes this park so spacial, other than the natural beauty, is the staff. They were very friendly, very helpful, and we can't say enough about them. Thank you for making our stay that much better.
Margaret Lautenschlager
It is always a beautiful sunset and great hikes at this place.
Aidan Ellinghuysen
Amazing view, not very buggy, good sized campsites. Everything you want on a camping trip.
Michael Contreras
Very beautiful and peaceful campsite. There’s some nice trails that you can walk. The park staff are very friendly from what I’ve seen, and very helpful. Be wary of the deer that you may come across, I arrived at night and almost hit a deer, but good thing I was vigilant. The only reason I don’t give it five starts is due to how green the water is, it’s not something I would even consider swimming in. But if you can handle not swimming (even though we’re in a pandemic), I do recommend highly to camp here for a peaceful time.
Steve Komarinetz
The place was super clean, there were brand news showers and bath house, they were the best I've seen yet. One negitive is the droughts have caused the lake water level very low to the point were its green with alge and basically dead. The office Ranger was great, she was a perfect fit for the position. Don't pass this up.
Kienan Mick
For the flat landers, this park provides easy yet serene hikes.
Jolene Gierach
Beautiful, quiet and peaceful. Employees were very helpful and friendly 🙂 …
Ted Sothern
I have never camped here, only biked and hiked. Extensive trails through woods and open spaces. Love to see the flocks of water birds on the lake. Boat access as well.
T Asher
We had #9 campsite on the Big Island and enjoyed the wildlife (we saw many deer) and privacy of the site. The site had a great canopy to keep us cool and good proximity to the bathrooms (no electricity though). It's a great park for bikes, but with the dogs, we enjoyed the trails on the island which were tree covered. The only reason i didn't give it a 5- bathrooms are a bit more dated that most of the state parks we've been to and have 2 showers for the ladies.
Jamie Papasodora
Nice camp ground. Bathrooms/showers are clean and well kept. The sites are close together so keep in mind you will hear and see your neighbors. The trails are very nice. I think the raccoons are overly populated in this area so keep that in mind. They are bold and are not scared of anyone :) Canoeing and Kayaking was fun!
Paul Morken
The Big Island campground was well kept and surprisingly quiet. Lots of hiking options in the park. Overall a good experience.
Doug Sahr
Nice trails and campsites with updated restroom/shower spaces. With younger kids a beach or little play set would be nice but otherwise a nice park.
Jeffrey Bodensteiner
I went snowshoeing at this park this past winter and had a blast! It was the first time I'd been out to the park in the winter. When I was young, my family would always drive slowly out to the island looking for deer or other wildlife that we didn't often see in town. As a child, the Dutchman's Britches were one of my favorite plants to seek out growing next to the trails in the Spring. Happy hiking or whatever the activity you choose to partake in!
Tracy Olney
Beautiful spot, with so many biking and hiking trails. More then a bit spendy considering you only get 30 amp electric, no water, no dump station, but still a gorgeous place.
Amie Kranz
Gorgeous state park! We hiked the Pelican trail and scoped out all the hike in sites for future camping. Each is very secluded and has great views of the lake.
After hiking we drove through the drive in sites throughout the park. We preferred the big island and little island group sites to the ones near the hike in sites.
Beautiful forests, lots of wildlife and clean facilities. So excited to return!
Beau Pihlaja
Just stayed one night on the way somewhere else. But LOVELY State Park. White Fox Campground was great. Well kept. Campsites were large and semi-private (a lot of space between them). Even split between RVs and tents. Tent camped on one site. Hiked a bit on island trail. Beautiful but not especially close to the water except in a few places. Didn't have cause to visit dock or entryway to lake. Is nearer to a main street than realized so did hear faint traffic and a train in the night, but nothing that kept us awake. Bathrooms were clean and accessible. Didn't use showers but wouldn't have hesitated to if necessary. Definitely would like to visit again.
Constance Stevens
Great place to 🏕 camp. Clean facilities, great bike trail into Albert Lea, and great trails for hiking. Would definitely go back. While there we saw a red fox and 3 deer. …
Delinda Pushetonequa
A great combination of Nature and modern amenities. It was mostly full, but the campground did not feel crowded. It had easy access to water, modern restrooms and showers. The White Fox Campground is well-maintained. The neighboring campers were all friendly and there seemed to be an unspoken rule of quiet at night. It was fourth of July weekend and it was quiet by 10:30pm.
Wood for fire can only be purchased at check-in; outside firewood is not allowed.
Although there were plenty of campers when we went hiking we did not encounter any other humans. There are many hiking and biking trails and plenty of maps on the way. It's easy to find your way through the trails. It was a great find and I'd definitely return for more camping and hiking.
Kristina Scanlon
This place is beautiful!!! It's nice and wooded, but right on the water if you camp on the island. It has fishing a short drive (or LONG walk) away, a boat launch for the canoes and paddleboards that they rent, and because of its close proximity to Albert Lea, we actually had cell service! They have paved and unpaved hiking trails, and the whole campground has more of a rustic nature (including the bathrooms). The bathrooms really weren't bad, just a little older. I would DEFINITELY recommend this place for a great camping trip!!!
Lori Smith
Campground pretty flooded. Very muddy but not campgrounds fault. We only stayed 1 night. Walked the trail next morning. Nice trail.
Sara Hanks
Very pretty surroundings, but lots of mosquitoes. Like, a ridiculous amount of mosquitoes. We couldn't leave the windows of our RV open because they came in through the screens. There is no electricity, so we were sweating all night with no AC and closed windows. We're not from Minnesota so maybe this is normal. Oh well. The nice ranger at the office sold us bundles of hard wood for 5 dollars each. The lake is scenic but not really a place for swimming; there isn't a beach either. I'm not sure if it was allowed, but we let our dogs swim in the lake and they had a great time. There are a few trails for hiking and biking.
PoppaWatson Stuff
Nice State Park off the interstate. Well spaced sites for camping. Room for bigger rigs. Lake good for canoes and kayaks. Decent amount of maintained trails. Cell service is decent.
Kevin Kurtz
I'm giving it 5 stars because it is a really well maintained state park.

We went for a short walk around the Big Island and drove around to Little Island. The park seems very nice with at least three types of terrain to hike: forest, marsh, and prairie. The trail was pretty easy and had some nice views of the woods and lake. We were surprised there were no mosquitos, too! We'll be back to see more of this park!
Alex Jinks
Small, family friendly, clean and beautiful. Town is a 5 min drive if needed but you wouldn't know during the day. You can hear the highway at night but only because it's so quiet. I'd go back.
Randal Baker
A great day to be in the park, especially if you are interested in waterfowl. We hiked the Hiking Club trail which went from one end of the park to the other. It was 6 miles, but very easy and beautiful.
Bubba
Lots of wildlife to see (deer, turkey, turtles, birds). Services when there they are great. But not there very often during the year which sucks. Overall as long as you know not to expect any real services in the park before you visit. You will enjoy.
Matt Jones
Beautiful state park. Lots and lots of great camping spots right by Lake Albert Lea. Despite being so close to town and within eyesight of Interstate 35 going across the lake, the park still very much has a feel of being out in the country. Great boat landing as well. The park is large in size as well, especially for a state park located in Southern Minnesota. I'll definitely be back!
Kenneth Labuskes
We camped here last night. The campsites were clean and litter free. There was a picnic table and a fire ring. The campsites were level and had adequate parking for multiple cars or an rv and a car. The campground was rather full. I would recommend a reservation. Unfortunately, there were no paths connecting to the lake. The price was a bit high at $28 for a tent space.
Angella Hanson
Lovely quiet park with lots of picnic spots. Ranger office closed to public due to pandemic, but staff inside saw us struggling with online pass sales and cracked the window open to sell an annual pass to us instead. THANK YOU! Hike in campsites, prairie and wooded camp sites, and lots of fun geocaching. Bathrooms near the picnic shelter are closed, but a pit toilet is available. Bees have built a nest on the information sign near the picnic shelter, so stay back. Someplace to come back to as the seasons change.
Emily Carlson Roth
Lovely park! Both campgrounds are quite nice. I reccomend renting a canoe and going around the lake. There's a pretty good reason there is not a beach. ON the water is nice. IN the water, not so much. There are many birds to see and hear and enjoy!
Lois Kriegh
Love this place. Takes reservations.
The camp Ranger was so friendly and extremely helpful. Think her name was Debbie? Petite older lady.
The layout of the campsites and hookups were wonderful. Dumpsit and clean water available and at no charge.
Chelsea Stone
The camping spots are all spacious enough but the whole park is on the small side. Could walk all the trails in a day, no problem and not all of the trail area is wooded. Much is in prarie like area so expect time in the sun. In the upper camping areas you can hear the freeway pretty well but if you get a camping spot down by the lake it's a lot less noticeable.
Stevie Fitch
Friendly staff, very nice bathrooms with shower. However, the roads are in terrible condition, with massive potholes all over the place, and the lake is extremely shallow and muddy, to the point it's not good for swimming.
Venus Parks
Lots of different trails and easy to walk.
Darren Moseley
Great family camp site. They have a couple of paddle boards available to rent, plus 6 canoes and a few kayaks. The island camp sites are thick with trees. Can be buggy at times. Nearby bike trail gets you close to the Trails End Cold Stone Creamery.
Miles Boyd
Nice wooded campground. Watch out for logs as you try to back in your camper though.
Ana Tverberg
It was fantastic. My husband and I lived it. Very tranquil. The birds will wake you instead of fire trucks or the noice of the highway. Bathroom were very clean, along with showers. The whole place itself was very clean. Cindy, the forest ranger, was very friendly. Answer all our questions. They also had good for the camp fire. Very very nice.
Armenius Ash
Even though we stopped here for a little while to rest during our road trip... Definitely recommended! The venue was beautiful. Haven't tried the hiring trails, but if you're on the road and passing by here: Check it out! It's a good place to rest and chill
Nate Campbell
Great campground we stayed in white fox, private sites with shade and clean bathhouse with showers. Mostly empty on a Monday night in early july. We stayed in the wall tent, heavy canvas semi permanent tent you can reserve. Wood floor, but no cots included. Very nice fire ring, better than most.
Scott Groth
The forest and lakes are beautiful here!
john callahan
The older lady at the front desk is so sweet and reminds me of my grandma. She has the warmest and most straight forward greetings. Very cozy feeling here. Clean bathrooms and showers. The guy officer kinda dickish but he just doing his job.. so many deer and wildlife to see and experience it's amazing. Wonderful place to stay...
Michael Schmidt
I camped here last weekend and had a great experience. The grounds are clean and well maintained. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Some of the sites were a little small, but the campground isn't very large. I really appreciated the bathrooms with running water. I would definitely visit this campground again.
Dan Cook
Nice sites but they confiscated my firewood even though it was in a sealed container and stored at their office.
Matt McGovern
This review is mostly for the group camp, though parts of it are for the regular campsites too. Its a fine park, it just needs some minor upgrades to get a better review.
Pros:
1) Its a beautiful state park with plenty of space.
2) The hiking was nice. Not as much of the main trail was next to the lake as you would like, but it was still a nice hike.
3) Staff was very helpful and nice.
4) Group camp was wonderful. It was plenty spacious. We had 7 adults and 5 kids and two dogs, with 4 tents up and there was plenty of room . Plus the view of the sunset across the lake from the group camp was amazing.
Cons - where to begin:
1) The group camp is not marked with any signage and can be tough to find. When you actually get to parking for where the group camp is, you are not sure you are in the right place (and yes, I can read a map , and was certain I was in the right place. But every other group camp I have been in, especially when it is a hike in, is marked with some kind of signage) The only sign that is there is a sign that says 'Toilet'.
2) Because there is no signage except for the Toilet sign, everybody thinks its a trail. We had over 10 different groups of people come into the group camp thinking it was a trail, only to find people already there, trying to enjoy themselves. Its not the biggest deal, but when strangers walk into a group camp, it causes dogs to bark, which wakes kids from naps. Not the end of the world, but solvable by putting in a sign that says "only group camp site residents" or something. Anything.
3) There is not specific parking for the group camp. The parking is shared with the parking for the canoe rental boat launch and the fishing dock. It wasn't a problem the first night, but the second day, there was a group of about 50 people renting all the canoes, and they brought about 20 cars. They double parked most of us in, so we couldn't even get our cars out. That isn't the parks fault necessarily, but its a problem none the less. We could only get one car out, and that car was used to go get more firewood and ice. When we came back, there was no where to park. The hike in is far enough when carrying bundles of wood. Now you have to walk like an extra quarter of a mile because you have nowhere to park. It was a huge con.
4) Because the canoes and docks are so close to the group camp, you get all that noise. If those groups are making any amount of noise, you will hear it. And they wouldn't think they need to be silent, especially in the early AM, because there is no damn sign to let any of the non group campers know there is a group camp there. When the large group was there the second day of our trip, we could here their noise all afternoon. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it wasn't exactly peaceful either.
5) This one grinds my gears . There is no water or trash at the group camp. I can understand water, fine, I will travel to the regular camp sites to get water. But no trash? How is there nothing? Seems poorly set up to not have anything, especially since the parking around is also for the boat rental and fishing docks. How isn't there a single garbage can/ dumpster for all those people using that space? It doesn't make any sense to me.
4) Its a hike in group camp. Not the worst, but about 600 feet. I measured it using GPS on my phone. I can easily walk 600 feet. But it can get annoying when you have to make many multiple trips. Its not the biggest con in the world, but its not fun making multiple trips carrying bundles of wood. Especially when that short hike in becomes much longer, because you can't actually get a parking spot in the group camp lot.
5) This con is subjective and not fully researched, as I only went into the regular campgrounds to get water and dump trash. But the sites didn't seem to have much between them. And quite a few sites seems right on top of each other with nothing separating the sites.
Overall, a fun but average camping experience.
Darin Craven
2 campgrounds that are very different.
The island campground is very rustic. The other one has nice modern bathrooms and camp sites. Individual showers and clean large bathroom make the newer site a winner. The island site is heavily wooded and as bit muddy if it rains. Bathrooms and showers are very dated.
Benjamin Brummel
Very nice state park with good rates on canoe, kayak, and paddle board rentals. I enjoyed paddle boarding on the shallow lake. The only thing that would be nice is if the lake was swim-able. It’s a bit muddy and shallow.
Daniel Randolph
Gorgeous Minnesota gem. Lots of great sites and wildlife viewing.
Amy Larson
Very nice park. Loved the trails and wildlife. Only complaint is camped in bp4 and all the placard maps on the park showed water in a spot not far from sites but no water. Had to hoof if in the dark to the main campsite for water.
Rodney Tholen
Simple, shallow, easy lake to teach the next generation boating. Bring your oars. It's shallow, but broad. 12ft Lund and a 9.9 Johnson is why they made them. You can let the kids burn 6 gallons of gas and never worry.
TheAlyssaAnn89
Beautiful state park. Clean! The White Fox campground has gorgeous prairie views and the big island campground has more mature trees and swamp areas. Two different nice places! Will come back!!!!!
Michelle Koehlmoos
Our campsite was nestled in the back and felt very private, given there were only a few people at the park anyway. I appreciated that there were mulched areas for tents for comfort. Maybe it was the time of year that we visited but I didn't see one mosquito and had a very enjoyable stay.
anand reddy
Second camping trip off my life. Couldn’t have gone better. First was St. Croix. The bathrooms are newly built and very clean. We went on trails along the beach.
Parlette
Beautiful park, but a section of a trail on big island was closed with no signage until I was right on top of it. After backtracking and much searching to find where to pick up the trail again, I was concerned that part of the trail was along a curving road. I will try again with hopefully better luck.
marvin dotson
Loved it! Always a beautiful camping experience.
Lisa Drogemuller
I am consistently impressed by MN state parks. This is a lovely park with a combination of woods, water, and prairie with many hiking trails. Camping sites are spacious. Easy trip from the twin cities.
Zechariah Sindt
Peaceful, serene, camp sites are a little small, but overall a nice place. Nowhere to fish there, but good fishing a few minutes away in Albert Lea.
Todd Dugdale
The lake is big, but pretty shallow. You could walk around probably half of it and keep your head above water. Also pretty weedy. The island is really interesting. It has a thick canopy of hardwood trees -- you can hardly see the sky or even the lake on most of the island because the trees are so dense. Most years, though, the mosquitoes are unbearable on the island.
Alfred Anderson
I like this park. Campsites are generally good (electric sights seem generally larger and more level than non-electric). Trails are well groomed and interesting to walk. Ranger is friendly and helpful.
M J (nzeroesc)
While Myre Big Island might not have some of the amazing scenery of the more popular state parks, it is a gem in the rough with many great amenities to enjoy. The staff are pleasant and helpful and there is much to enjoy while staying here or just passing through. There are many miles of hiking trails, and with close access to the nearby city, you have anything you may need easily accessible as well.
Luis Garcia
Very nice park, nicely planed, the hike trails I walked where fun and exciting, lots of nature to see. I definitely will be back when the opportunity show up.
Thank you to the park ranger in the office for all the information provided.
Sean Holden
Great views. Pads for tents 🏕 and a CLEAN 🧼 SHOWER 🚿 …
Ben Olson (theGiddyNorse)
A short trip from the metro but a good escape. I come here for quick one night camps at their backpacking sites, especially when I have a ton of new gear I want to try out all at once but don't want to hike far with all of it. My only gripe is the freeway noise is absurd with it being so close to 35. But if you go during the waterfowl migration, the geese and ducks will drown it out.
Dan Pie
Lots of walking/hiking/bike trails of which go all the way into Albert Lea, wild life ,clean flush toilets and clean private showers, on a huge lake ,quiet, upper and lower campground with fire rings and picnic tables also has boat, canoe, stand up paddle board rentals reasonably priced.the park rangers are all super friendly and helpful.
You register on line for a reservation
John Gray
Did the 6.2 mile hiking trail. There are other trash. Was pleasantly surprised at the whole park (layout, camping sites, cleanliness, nice visitors center, friendliness is the staff). Highly recommend a visit to this park.
Tyler Wheeler
Beautiful scenery, great camping places
Maureen McLaughlin
Glorious color fall foliage today (Oct 9 '20) with a summer like temp making great hiking weather. No mosquitoes...but Asian beetles were flying around.
Dawn E Pfluger
Great campground
Werner Giesen
Spent the weekend at Myre-Big island State Park. VERY nice park. Nice spacious sites (White Fox Campground) and very clean. Timing must have been right because we had no issue with bugs - non at all. Plan on going back soon.
Steve
Rustic campground on a lake. Some sites have a view of the lake, electric only so you will need to fill up with water. Other drawback is they charge a daily fee on top of the camping fee which causes confusion and extra work for the customer. Why not just raise the camping fee to include the daily fee like many states do. It is one of the Mose expensive state parks we have stayed in.
Jerry Gabrielatos
Best state park in Southern Minnesota, with both trails along the lake as well as through the forest. Park Staff is helpful and kind. Trails are routinely maintained.
Sarah R Jirak
Beautiful oasis of tall oaks, maples on bluffs all along a 2,509 acre shallow lake. Modern RR and showers.
Stefan Marin
Beautiful place!
Michael Wagner
Beautiful setting. Very well maintained and signed hiking paths. Good place for biking as well. Campsites are well spaced and fairly level. I will definitely return.
Jessica Fields
Great stop for a visit just off I-90 and I-35. Part of the main trail is closed - not marked or posted as such so you don't know until it's time to turn around (this is as of about 2 weeks ago). Walked around for less than an hour.
Dave C
Whether you're camping in a tent, rv, or trailer they've got you covered. The boat launch needs some work as the bottom of the ramp has buckled up and could cause some problems if you have a boat on a trailer. Really this was the only negative. All the staff are just sweet as could be. Morgan was even excited to see the pics and vids that we took. Lol. This really is a beautiful park.
Julian Basak
Beatuiful park. Great campground. Friendly staff!
Christopher Thompson (Thompsolonian)
We stayed at the little island group site, which was awesome. It was like havign a camp to yourself. The big islang portion is a great place to get some hiking in, with paths scattered all about. The big island area can be a bit buggy, mosquitoes love the shaded area under the trees there.
The Little island gorup campsite is nice, a light crossbreeze keeps the mosquitoes down and there is a boat launch right near the parking lot by the site.
PLENTY of room for a large gorup, can't wait to get there next year.
Jessua Mathieu
Its a great park, great for kids/couples, caniring or just relaxing, but cant give it five stars. Most of the staff are great, however streer clear of the elderly female park ranger. Hostile, rude, and aggressive with us on multiple occasions without cause.
Khai Mrant
Being closed to i35, it was very noisy all night. Restrooms/shower rooms were closed. Our camping experience wasn't great as a result.
Cyndi Schmidt
Staff very helpful and nice. Campgrounds are well kept. Bathroom at white fox is wonderful. Loved the kayak and canoe trip on the lake lots of wildlife to see.
Clark Y
Nice gem in Southern MN! Excellent Fall Colors.
Matter Tam

David Lockwood
Easy to get to. Plenty of parking. New restrooms in camping area. Both forested and plains hiking trails.
Nathan Randel
I love this park. Never too crowded. Prairie, forest, Marsh, and lake. I've walked every trail here numerous times. Probably the nicest place in Southern MN.
Jess Williams
Camp grounds offered basic amenities. Quiet hours were not enforced. Didn’t want to take a shower there due to the water smelling oddly metallic.
Ryan Arbuckle Sr.
Always fun! Knowledgeable staff, well maintained trails and camping areas, fishing, kayak or canoe. I've managed to never be disappointed in the abundance of wildlife and spectacular views here.
TR Macholl
Was just an overnight stop but very clean and quiet. It was a Monday in July. Highly recommended. Camp site was also awesome. Stayed by the upper area, not near the lake. Cheap nite but quality was high. Tent camping.
Diana Snow
Thick woods and campsites on an island. Large campsites, somewhat private with trees and shrubs between them. Some sitrs have lakes views. Mtn bike trails, State bike trail passes through the State Park.
Renee Conner
This is a little gem of a state park. Picturesque camping in October. Loads of grass trails to walk pups and easy to get to from route 35.
Corey Haugen
Great place to relax, hike the trails, camp and enjoy the outdoors. One of the great SE MN state park options!
Jessica Williams
Great campground, lots of nicely maintained hiking trails. Tent sites at the Big Island campground were pretty small, but adequate. Saw a lot of wildlife.
Jerry Tupper
Nice park needs dust control not much for bank fishing enjoyed the stay
Matt Rowe
Decent state park. Trails are exposed and the lack of a decent beach to enjoy the lake are disappointments. Camp sites are nice, though, and the shower facilities are good.
Rikarnob Bhattacharyya
Nice campsite with a short and sweet bike trail :) the lake is kinda nasty near the shores but its huge so +1 if you got a canoe!
K K
The visitor's center was really nice, the rangers there were very helpful. Our camping experience was fantastic, the campsites are spacious, the restrooms were super comfortable and clean.
Diane Scarf
It's a great place to view nature at it's best. However, there really isn't a good place to go fishing or launch a boat. Mostly for hikers and bike riders.
Lanny Pratt
Big Island is my recharging station for me and my dog. We love the quiet connection with nature, within a few minutes of downtown, never a visit without deer, turkey, mink, eagles, etc!!! Thank you wardens for all your do for all of us!

Nice park, lots to do. We were there for geo caching. We found the cache but walked a lot. It was a cool evening and nice evening for the walk. I would not want to make in high temperature.
Allison Crowell
Nice quiet state park. The shaded sites were perfect for a hot weekend. Loved all the trails and abundance of wildlife

Prairie hiking, backpacking, canoeing, and camping. Outhouse near backpack-in/canoe-in campsite was well maintained. Reserved campsite was well stocked with dry wood. Quiet, secluded campsites.
Jake Albee
Gorgeous, well maintained park. Fall colors were great in mid-October.

Nice State park to spend a might. Must have a Minnesota parks pass but they sell them at the gate and they also have a nightly option that other states do not.
