Reviews of Falls of the Ohio State Park
Marion Socha
This is a great place for watching sunsets. There are a lot of places to catch the light just right.
When the water is low, you can explore the Falls and/or fish too. It is truly an amazing feeling being on the fossil rocks. (My pics do not show that part unfortunately).
There are playgrounds for the kids and picnic areas too.
Missy Keck
Was really neat. Had a great time walking with the hubby. The water was low so we could walk a little further today. You have to watch the water levels. To go through the center it does cost a little. Just a warning cause we left our wallets in the car. We did enjoy all the outside walking. Hope you all enjoy
Christina Taylor
What an amazing place. The view was amazing and the museum was nice. Great customer service. I took a start off because there are trails to walk. However as you get down most the trail you have to turn around because they are working on it. They should have that posted.
Andrea L D
A visit you can’t miss when you are in Louisville. Be aware of the heat around the fossil area as temperature rises. Amazing to discover different fossils while strolling along the river side. There’s also a spectacular view of Louisville’s skyline.
Highly recommended!
Kevin Parrett
Free to explore the Fossil beds. Only cost to get into the museum and exhibit area. $2 parking. Be careful. It is 20° hotter on the limestone bed, then the air in the summer. Great time overall please visit.

Great place near downtown Louisville for bird watching and family picnic. Trail in the park offers good location of birding and walking. River bed walkable when the water level is low. Seen many people come here for fishing and jogging or biking.
Jim Ferris
Falls of the Ohio State Park is a long, meandering park that follows the Ohio River between Louisville and Clarksville for (insert specific distance here) mile(s). It affords you a great view of the Louisville skyline and makes for a great afternoon walk.
This is a great park. There's plenty of shoreline to walk along, benches and tables for sitting, and paved paths for walking and biking. On any given day you'll see dozens, even hundreds of people milling or riding about the park.
The fossil beds along the shore are fascinating and easy to access, and are just one of the cool things about this park. There's a visitor/education center that we didn't visit (saving that for next time) that's got a great elevated view of the river and some of those quarter-fed telescopes for seeing long distances.
For me, getting as close as I can to rushing water my goal. I love the power and the majesty of flowing water. The park very well maintained and groomed, and I've never seen rogue litter hanging around on my visits.
From tree-lines paths to open shore to sitting on a bench and enjoying nature, Falls of the Ohio State Park is a park you'll want to visit again and again.
Ashley Johnson
Love coming to this place. It's peaceful, educational, interesting, and they always hold tours that teach you things everytime. It's free to the public and they encourage all to grab some hand shovels and explore the beds behind the education center. There you can find different minerals, gems, fossils and all types of great artifacts. A favorite of mine and my littles.
Gregory Judy
This is one of the most underrated state parks in Indiana. My family loved viewing the fossil beds. Lewis and Clark met here before they began their journey west. The park brings history to life.
Laura Hamann
Our family enjoys hiking down to the water to explore and fish. The visitor center is nice but won’t fit in everyone’s budget but heading down to the waters edge to explore the fossils and shore areas is free. It is not a safe place to get in the water so don’t try that and while there is a concrete walkway part of the way down anyone with limited mobility won’t be able to get all the way down. We went night fishing yesterday and the lights from Louisville were beautiful as they reflected off of the water. It’s a different experience going during the day than at night but I recommend doing both. But go during the day first so you get a good feel for the lay out of the rocks you’ll be climbing up and down.
Bonnie Robinson
The park is free to explore the fossil beds. We went later in the summer evening when it was cooler and we could enjoy gorgeous sunset views of the river and Louisville skyline.
Julisa Caraballo
I go a little crazy taking photos, but I like to share the different views and some of the same. You can actually walk the rocks, right now. It was a little muddy, so it a good thing I was wearing my rain boots. It's a nice view of downtown Louisville and you get to enjoy the calmness of the water off the Ohio River.
GRAMS
I loved being able to explore the fossils and there is a plethora; however, if you want to explore beyond the visitor center and great fossil flats it gets 🎲 to drive to overview point on map due to roads being closed to both traffic and foot traffic if you are unfamiliar with the town. …
David Kravetz
I love this great park across the Ohio River from Louisville. The Lewis and Clark history, the waterfalls, the great views of Louisville and all the bridges. Definitely worth crossing over the Second Street Bridge
Christopher Johansen
Fascinating exhibit in the park and access to the fossils. You can walk to the river and see the fossils in the rocks that align the shore. We went in May and the honeysuckle was in bloom. It looked and smelled amazing. There was also many bikers, walkers, people fishing and a fun music area for kids.
Pamela Tanner
Lots of fun with my grandgirls.
My littles wish there was a stool so she could see out the view finders.
Wish the ramp could get cleared to be easier useable. Also needs a handrail toward bottom of stairs.
S. D
Beautiful. I’ve never heard of this place, but it is a very peaceful sleepy town. The park closes at 11pm, and there is a night life area with restaurants just a few blocks away. Staying the night in the area? There is a very nice park a few blocks away with free Wi-Fi. Bike trails and play area for kids are all at the falls.
Allan A
Great park close to downtown Louisville. Cool views of the skyline and exposed fossil beds. The museum had some cool displays and movies. Could spend as little as an hour or maybe half a day at the park.
Alisa P
This is one of those places that keeps changing its river borders as the four seasons change. Nice place to visit once you are in Louisville. You just needs to cross the bridge over the Ohio river, and you are here.
Rhonda Huff
Wonderful show case of Mother Nature . The Ohio has influenced the Kentuckiana area throughout history
The falls beds are famous and people come from far to see and study them
There is shore line fishing along the beach area many anglers
Come to try their luck
Bird watchers come to photograph the local wildlife
Wonderful picnic area with a outstanding view
Kids playground
The museum has first class displays with a movie theater
Nice wooded hiking trails
Nice place for a day trip
Visit Ashland park for a beautiful
View of the Louisville skyline.
Brittany Farley
Such a great place to come and relax. Plenty of parking, you can sit in your car and look at the water and city while catching up on paperwork. You can walk or run and even ride your bike the pathway provided to get some exercise. It's not a messy park and there are spots to sit down.
Dolly
A lot to see.. if you like fossils and rocks!! So much info here on the making of the falls. There are movies inside that are well done and even an exhibit. I loved the outside the most. There is also a very very old dictionary in the exhibit which is so cool.
Christina Michelle
Perfect spot to go and have an amazing adventure. A place to stop, rest; or gander. There is much to see and find. Definitely a must-see while in the area.
Gloria Gilliam
Great place to visit. The fossil beds are a valuable educational experience for children and adults. There is an scenery route around the river. The museum has interesting displays and info.
David Riggleman
It's not your traditional state park, but offers a unique experience walking along fossil beds to see a wide range of different types of fossils. The hike down to the fossil beds is short, so it's great if you are not into longer hikes. Although good footing is recommended on some of the uneven rocks and terrain. Finally, there was no entrance fee to the park, making it a good place to being the whole family for free.
Michael Smith
The Falls is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon.
There are not as many fossils laying around as there was before it became a park but if you look long enough a piece of horn coral or honeycomb coral can usually be found.
Take a bottle with you so you can pour water on the amazing fossils embedded in the rocks.
Water makes them much more visible.
It is also a great place to fish, you literally never know what you will reel in next.
While fishing at the Falls or a little downstream, I have caught Bluegill, Drum, multiple types of Catfish, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Perch, Sauger, Walleye, White Bass, Striped Bass and probably a few that I don't recall at the moment.
You don't need a huge tackle box full of fancy lures, most of the fish I listed can be caught on a simple lead-head jig with a curly, rubber tail.
Just make sure your line is fresh and strong and check the line above your lure periodically as it can get nicked when going across the rocks.
Wouldn't want to hook something huge only to have your line snap.
And be sure to have a license, I have been checked more than once by game wardens while fishing at the falls.
The only thing that keeps me from giving five stars is the fact that they make people pay to park there.
Casey Hathaway
Such a fun place to visit! We did not enter into the museum since we were traveling with a dog, but the kiddos loved playing on the rocks and with the sticks.
Dawn Morris
Very informative museum with interesting displays, and reveals some history of Lewis & Clark. Unlike other states parks this one doesn't have trails and camping. There are some city walking paths connecting throughout, so it's still a great place for a long walk along the river greenway.
Jonathon Myhre
I walk through this area a lot and I absolutely love it. It is gorgeous country. Between the falls of the Ohio River and the old train bridge, there is tons and tons and tons of little areas to look at and to enjoy the outdoors. I frequently play Pokémon GO in this area.
E. Hurst
I just recently visit the falls and it was breathtaking, being so close to the water and seeing Louisville at a different angle. It was great walking along the water on top of the rocks even seen some baby frogs!
There was a museum as well, the rangers that work there were very polite during our visit. I made sure to buy a magnet to remember the great time I had.
Thank you falls for being beautiful!!
Emochi
Its a beautiful place to go for a walk.
I like to bring my family here to enjoy the views and see all types of pebbles.
Marc & Debbie Whitfield
The interpretive center was very informative. Interesting walk out to the water over the fossil beds. Cool place to spend a couple of hours.
Sara
Man this was cool! The learning center is open daily and closes at 5pm. Unfortunately we got there about 15 minutes after it closed but there was still a ton of other things to see and do. Perfect for kids. Perfect for adults. It's just a really cool place.
Oh, and holy smokes! You get to walk on a fossil bed! From my understanding, if you go into the learning center, they give you information on what to look for when you're out there but if you just look closely, especially in the little baby pools that are scattered everywhere, you'll see fossils.
Birds out here are cool! Also, if you look around the centre, look for the markers they have in place from when they had bad floods and you'll see how high the water got. It's insane! I saw two markers, one from (I believe) 1993 (which was high) and one from 1937 (which makes the flood from '93 look puny!).
Mary Pearson
This park was closed when we visited. Some info available to read. Hope to return when open. Impressive engineering.
Martin Cabela
Enjoyed the fossils and view. Long park with a lot of water frontage. Parking in two main areas, one along the road and another lot behind the center. From the center you can walk down stairs to the fossil bed. This part is not handicapped accessible.
The center has a full size mammoth skeleton and restrooms.
The park has a life size statue of Rosie The Riveter and awesome views of the Louisville skyline.
John S. Hague
Bring sturdy hiking shoes and a sense of adventure for the more rugged elevations outside the visitor center!
Michael Snuffer
This place is awesome if you get into history and fossils or just nature!
Alexis Pruitt
A grey dismal weather day didn't stop us from heartily exploring the the rocks and water. The ranger was extremely knowledgeable about the rocks and fossils and even knew about all of the birds. He was a joy to talk to.
We saw a sedge of great Egrets. It was beautiful to watch all of the posturing going on with the birds.
Sheila Todd
Plan to spend the day climbing the rocks. Beautiful and interesting things to look at. Fossils everywhere! Be sure to wear appropriate footwear as dress shoes would be very slippery on the rocks. It’s not like it’s very high up although some areas are a bit of a drop… but it’s not cliffs like they have at Garden of the Gods. Twisting an ankle or breaking an arm or leg would still be very likely if you slip and fall.
Unfortunately my friend and I spent so much time enjoying the area that the information building had closed for the evening.
The rocky area goes quite far out into the riverbed… there are warning signs posted that if you hear the loud siren from the damn, leave the area as quickly as possible as the water is going to rise rapidly (I’m assuming they are opening the flood gates to release excess water??) and I have no idea how much time elapses between the siren and the actual release of water. But I’ve been there twice and spent the full day both times and they never released water.
Definitely go. Pack a lunch. Take the kids. They’ll have a blast climbing and poking around in the rocks.
Noel Kukucka
Excellent park with an amazing history. Wonderful views.
ian cart
The park itself is lovely but don't waste your time at the interpretave center. It is over priced and doesn't have much to see at all. One should take heed from the several printed signs that state "no refunds." After going through it I understand why people have been asking. Just stick with the park and you won't go wrong.
Dr. Aaron Campbell
I have been here many times with family and friends. This time around, the water was too high to take my son down to see the fossil beds. We were able to walk through the museum portion and enjoy some of the area wildlife and late winter scenes.
Mike Law
Not much to do, but do have a museum but it was closed when got there.
Carl Waters
was there when I was a kid on field trip hasn't changed a bit this day I was just taking pics of Louisville
Kevin Pearl
Be prepared to get your feet wet and cross some rough terrain. A great way to spend an afternoon.
Vanessa A Coulter
We renewed our wedding vows for our 40th anniversary. Followed a trail to a beautiful spot. Great day. Beautiful place.
Kristy Watkins
My dogs love it here. It's a great place to get a little more exercise than walking around in flat ground. The water is sparkly and the fossils are neat. Also I slipped in a pool but the picture was funny so I'm not going to blame the park lol.
Shannon Hardy
Beautiful place very peaceful, good place to go for a date night or with friends plus has doggy park.
Shanna Hodgson
Had a wonderful time enjoying the last day of summer. Such a beautiful place
Amy Wiggs
It's beautiful and peaceful! I enjoying going and listening to the water rushing through the falls. Really relaxes me and I enjoy seeing the wildlife!
Kamillia Saylor
This park is awesome! The fossils are everywhere, the view is stellar, and you can walk around for free. It is great exercise walking through all the sandy soil, as well. Definitely recommend sunscreen and a hat on sunny days. Getting to see the fossils from so long ago is always a great experience, and it is a unique view of the river.
Kylee Ann
We went to the fossil bed there. It is so cool because it is an area blocked off by dams that you can walk around in. You walk on a very rocky surface, and you can walk under the train bridge and there is a cute souvenir shop, too! (We all know by now what I did in there!) The reason that I am giving it a 4 star is because there was a lot of litter and trash that should have been cleaned up, considering that this is a state park. Overall though we had a lot of fun! The view is so beautiful and breathtaking, you should most definitely go! We were there for about an hour and we really enjoyed it.
Tammy Alenduff
I can't believe as many times as we've driven by, we never stopped at this beautiful place. VERY easy off and back on the interstate, so no reason to stop!! Very cool fossil beds (see their site for best viewing season) and how they have it portioned off from the rest of the river. You can see from the rock bed what caused the rapids that we're so treacherous. We plan on stopping again and taking the drive along the river.
Dennis Thorpe
I have always loved this place, because you don't feel like you are in a big city, even though the skyline of Louisville Kentucky is right in front of you ready for pictures. This particular day, the river was up, so the exposed part of the river was not there. They have great picnic areas, places to explore, portopoties, visitor center(even though it was closed because of covid19), and plenty of parking, even though the parking around the visitor center charges a dollar and that's on the honor system. Take your girlfriend, take your wife and children as it is a good safe clean park and there is something for everyone
cristeen shepard
Scenic Park with great views of Louisville. My family loved spending time checking out the area and searching for fossils. In the park, there are posted signs with information on the different types of fossils you may come across. It was really cool to be able to identify the fossils we found! I wish we would have planned for more time, because there is much we didn't get the chance to explore. My family looks forward to returning one day!
Becky Rainey
This is worth the visit. You can park behind the center & walk up to the overview area or you can hike down the incline to the water. Beautiful rocks to climb or sit on. Excellent views. Very picturesque! A great simple little pit stop to get a good stretch in while road tripping. Interesting history. Let your mind wonder in the possibilities of the historical pass. Sunset views are fantastic. Landscaping is picture worthy too.
Nathan Powers
Beautiful area down by the river and under an old railway bridge. Lots of people in the middle of the river fishing and catching good stuff.
A big sandy area to walk through. Just have to be careful cause there is no paths but lots of rocks to walk over.
Also lots of trash that washes down the river. A stark reminder of what we are doing to our nature and earth.
Brandon Feusner
What a great place to spend a couple hours. The price is very affordable at $9 for adults and $7 for children, but we went for free on the Louisville Culture Pass available during the summer through Louisville Free Public Library. It's been many many years since I'd been and the Interpretive Center was almost unrecognizable. They do an amazing job of walking you through the history of the area from millions of years ago through present. They have great interactive exhibits and plenty of things for both kids and adults to enjoy. We will definitely be back!
Benjapol Piyawanichpong
Visit there when the river is kinda dry and you will see so many fossils. The ground and river youn can visit for free. The museum cost extra money. In the spring or after heavy rain upstream of the river. The flow and sound of the river is super powerful. There is a hiking trail in the woods but looks like it only partially maintain and could not make a loop easily.
Andrea Coomer
I love this place. My kids and I have so much fun, especial the the dam is closed and the water is low. This day, my son and I took my mom who had never been. She has always been interested in fossils and had a good time look at them all.
yy66yyZack Nicholas
Wow! If you're into geology this is pretty awesome. There are different fossils on all different strata layers. A lot of driftwood and other debris to traverse but it is a large river so not very surprising. Definitely wouldn't advise a trip to the fossil beds if your not very nimble on you feet. It's pretty rough.
#kansascitykaren Ledford
Loved my time here exploring the Ohio fossel beds. Easy parking ($2 self pay) and just a short walk down to the river bed. Wear tennis shoes and bring lots of water in the summer. Lots of space to explore, fish, splash in the water. Two thumbs up! Beautiful afternoon.
RJ Conner
Great place to learn about history of extinct species, fossils, minerals, rocks and a lot more. It offers a beautiful view of the Ohio River and it has Bird Watching Area and Exhibits where Kids can enjoy and learn at the same time. They have a souvenir shop where you can buy fossils too. They offer outdoor activities where you can bring binoculars to observe bird species or trek along the Ohio River Greenway. There are 600 different fossils that can be found in the Falls and under good weather and river conditions, you can explore fossil beds. We explored the area both outdoor and indoor and my son loved every part of it. He enjoyed watching the birds and learning about fossils and rocks. Great place for kids and families for both outdoor and indoor activities. Highly Recommended!
Christine G
An exposed fossil bed spans along the riverbank. The Woodland loop trail starts at the Interpretive Center and is relatively flat. 0.5 miles. Very cool fossils.
Sonia Smith
I love my trip to explore this amazing place, we could check out all the big stones with fossils, walk the trails along to the river, it worth the trip.
Tiffany Pulkowski
Very interesting fossil beds and museum.
Debra Melancon
Weather was perfect for walking around. Was amazed at the fossils that were exposed. Not many people around so easy to distance. View of Ohio River was gorgeous. Nice restaurant around to dine nearby
Lasondra Fields
It's free to visit, free parking, and restrooms at the visitor center. There is stairs behind the visitor center that lead down to the fossil beds. You can walk along the river there, it's beautiful and well worth the stop.
Eugene Backlund
Great views of the Ohio river.
Raquel Schumacher
Beautiful historical site. Really enjoyed walking around and learning about the history of the river and all the people that made it through and those that did not.
LaDonna Wells
Really enjoy the Falls. Even when the water is up and you can't explore the fossil beds it is still a beautiful area and lovely to watch the rushing water. Unfortunately people pollute and litter.
Damion Seng
It's always so peaceful here no matter what time of day it is. And the view of downtown Louisville makes it even more worth it.
Also right after taking this photo, a skunk walk up on me.
Salah Shakir
Loved the park with a great view of Louisville downtown. Many place to sit and watch the rive. Visit the exhibit or walk by the water.
John Moran
Had no idea this was here until we visited Louisville. So much history an a geologically cool thing to walk on an ocean bed millions of years old. My kids loved it and we learned lots of new things about the area.
Dwayne Powell
If you want a beautiful sight and a good piece of mind I would highly recommend this place, I absolutely love it here!
***If you going to the water be very careful the current is very strong even if it don't look like it so be cautious***
Wee Lass
Great place to explore. It's a bit of a struggle for anyone with issues walking to get down to the fossil beds. Difficult to find. Beautiful views of the Ohio and bridges.
Kenzie Wheeler
What a wonderful little park!! My friend and I took his fur babies for a walk down by the water here at the Falls. Both Sadiee and Isis enjoyed their time extremely! It was so much fun and so beautiful. I definitely recommend this park for walking your fur babies, spending time in nature with your children/family, or for self-care by taking in the healing aspects of nature. I love this park, and will definitely be returning!!
Viki Meury
The park is very nice with different trails. The museum is awesome for kids and very informative. There are two small films with lots of information about the Ohio River.
Simon Harrison
Oh my god. I love this place. It's so beautiful.
Take your kids or go with a significant other! I will always recommend this place as a day trip!
Paul Dawson
Well maintained, great walking path, and beautiful areas river side. And a nice view of Louisville
Cindy Garau
Nice little park right on the river. Quick walk to & from Big 4 Bridge, or drive to & park. Several benches along the walking path & picnic tables a few steps behind them. Tree covers areas for shade. Parking avail but limited. Easy access to 65. Pubs nearby. Look fwd to going as leaves change should be beautiful.
Joshua Howe
You can catch good-sized fish and it's a very relaxing and the people that's there is pretty nice
Jason Burdette
Getting more mobility options thanks to the Ohio River's wetlands project. Love that bike path....from
New Albany to Clarksville to Jeff....all connected. Come take a trip and explore.... You'll fall in love!
Adam Smith
Cool place for some history on early America and Lewis and Clark. There is a path you can walk along the rivers edge, great views! The little museum has some neat history and videos that you can watch. Overall, if you have some extra time, it is worth a visit while in the area.
sandra williams
Just a beautiful place! The park was very nice as well as the town !
Geoff G
Not as much fun when it's flooded
Josh Johnson
The interpretive center was great for our two year old! I didn't think that it would hold her interest, but she really enjoyed all of the interactive parts of the exhibit. We didn't have time to stick around for a hike, so I can't really comment on the rest of the park. But the center was great!
Jo Mea
Beautiful views, clean park and trails. Watched the sunset in the parking lot beside the Ice Cream Shop.
Nabila
Cool place for a nice walk and picnic, we were in town and decided to check it out.
Robert M
Great little place and you can walk for miles if you want to.
Rhiannon Thomas
Loved the interactive exhibits and getting to see more about the falls.
Jessica Newman
This place is really neat. We had ice cream right across the street and rented bikes and road on the trails in front of the falls. There is also a playground and visitors center.
Gaeron Gruber
This state park is so wonderful, one of two of the largest fossil beds of the era. Heard and saw some wonderful birds including indigo bunting and egrets. I spoke with four different employees and learned as much as I could and they were each so friendly and knowledgeable. A fantastic place to visit.
Troy Layne
Awesome stop here: skipped the visitor center due to its poor reviews & just stuck to having fun with the kids out on the rocks below. Unbelievable how many, hundreds, of fossils that are plainly visible - everywhere in the rock. Bring the kids and plan on spending a good hour or so here, all for just a $2 parking fee.
Kelly Stepro
Hello Friends! 🙋
I cycled 20+ miles, today, along the Ohio River Greenaway Pathway into Downtown Louisville's, Louisville Loop, which is accessible across the Big 4 Walking Bridge. Wow! That's a mouthful of words to articulate; friends! Lol
But, seriously; it's so, so much fun to venture along this route, either by cycling and or jogging, and it is an active woman's
(or man's) exercise dream!
Now I didn't actually visit The Falls on this particular day, because - for one thing - it's not open to the general public; temporarily, during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, I've visited this park in the past year, and; it's a lovely place to bring the family for the natural, scenic beauty, it's very interesting to explore, and it's really, truly kid-friendly; too.
Such wonderful places to investigate, and to happily enjoy, around, and about ... Kentuckiana!💁
Cameron Aubernon
Falls of the Ohio State Park is a beautiful park, where you can see the Louisville skyline from across the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana.
You can also see the falls themselves, the only natural obstacle on the river, plus the barges which navigate past the falls through the locks.
And if course, you can look at the fossil beds to see the many fossils from the Devonian period.
And it only costs $2 to park your car to see it all.
laura batista
Very nice if you like nature and fishing
Amanda Adair
A touch pricey for the size but the visitor center was very well designed and maintained so we didn't mind too much.
Robert Walke
My fiancée and I came here for an engagement photoshoot, recommended by our amazing photographer. It was gorgeous! 😍 We took photos around sunset, and the way the sun comes across the waters is simply breathtaking. All of the small cliff sides and rock formations, with fossils hidden inside are fascinating! We can't wait to go back and explore more of the grounds in the future!
John Wojciechowski
I came here for a photo shoot with some other photographers..it was cloudy and the water was high...I walked around and found it to be interesting. I cannot wait to go back when the water is low and we have some good weather. But I do warn you to watch out for the Goblins and the Ghouls that lurk around the place!

Loved this place! Such a nice day outside to go visit. Kids would love learning about fossils. Mine did! Gift shop inside with a lot of cool items to buy. Have quarters ready for the lookout binoculars. Great way to view across to the falls. Take some cold water with you. Might be able get a tour and find out more info. Picnic sites just east of the museum and try to avoid the park bathrooms since they kinda unsightly! But wow what great stuff to learn about what was there right next to Louisville millions of years ago!!
Gerard Ellis
June 22, 2022, very hot day so we couldn’t spend much time out on the fossil beds.
Alicia Lewis
It's like going to the beach at an ocean, only with obstacle courses! Driftwood, rocks, and nature to explore. So nice@
teracia wooton
Awesome place, great interpretive center and beautiful scenery looking twords Louisville KY from Southern In. When the river is not flooded (like today)you can explore the fossil bed
Charles Papia IV
I have been fishing the falls all of my life . Locally, and in my opinion, there is not a better way to experience the Ohio Valley..
Anthony Blaszak
Great place to visit. If the river is high the rushing water is great to watch. If its low then you can walk out in the river bed and look at the fossils. Parking is $5 per car but if you don't mind walking then you can park down the street at the park and walk it not far. I don't recommend the museum it cost to much for what It is.
schag8
Fishing can be good here with so many kinds of fish that come up around the dam. The fossil beds are cool to walk around on to see what you can find. The museum is small but contains a lot of history for Kentuckiana.
Marolyn Lucy Gentles
This is a bucket list must go. I found free parking. But I imagine Derby day will be more crowded.
Chuck Clenney
One of the most unique places in America that tells an ancient story about Kentucky's ancient seas.
Right across the river in Clarksville, IN, this park features a 390 million-year-old Devonian coral bed, the world’s largest exposed Devonian Period fossil bed.
Perfect for kiddos and pups too
Angela Julian
Always a good stop. Easy to get to. Not much hiking required. A bit of stairs and you are there.
Sharon Elliott-Fox
Fascinating place especially this time of year when the river is low and one can walk on the fossil beds.
The Rosie the Riveter statue in adjoining Ashland Park is a great tribute to the women who did so much to help win the war.
La-La M.
Pretty place..Lots of history. Bathrooms are closed for the season even at the end of March. When the water level is lower you can see a fossil bed. Better to visit in the spring summer.
Barbara Nelson
I go year round several times a week. The sunsets are life changing. Bird watching and what the river gives up is daily treasure hunting. Never boring..
Candice Snelling
We loved visiting the falls of the Ohio State Park! My little ones learned a lot and got plenty of exercise too. Such a beautiful place with lots to offer.
Siva R
There isn't really a falls... it's the water from dam gates... which u have see from long distance but other water bodies, fossils, park, scenic view, u can enjoy...
Eric Bommer
It's a great place for a visit. $2.00 for parking per car. We did the interpretive tour, a little underwhelming for $9.00, but still very interesting. Walking by the river requires some agility, but nothing extreme. Going to spend a lot of time there in the future.
Anthony Williams
Great park for fishing and hiking. Lots of shore to set up on at different water levels. Paths for running. Parking can be full at times but more near the exhibit building. Lots of fossils if you look.
Nadia P
Great place to unwind while listening to the sound of the gushing falls. Beautiful view of the city!
Shar Bar
Birds,Flora,Fauna,Fossils,Devonian Exhibition(small admissions charge for exhibit),Picnic tables, free/cheap parking/fishing and lots and lots of water, what else could you ask for oh yeah and lots of fresh air🐱🐈🐱 …
Ella Petersen
It was beautiful! When I went the water was a little high but besides that the site of the city and the dam was amazing! The bridge was also magnificent.
jessica marcott
A total awesome experience it's kind of jaw-dropping and you never expected to be right in the middle of downtown with an awesome view of the city but the fossils and just the history there is so rich
Chris Barley
River was high, so not much of a falls to view, but museum was bargain, very nice short films and very kid friendly
SullenVex
Great place for photography and spend with the family. Great views and the nature center is very nice.
Daniel Turner
Good walking paths lots of room for bikers and walkers. They have steeper inclined paths and a more gradual path.
Stephanie Rose
My daughter and I loved looking for fossils here, flanked by the lovely backdrop of the river and bridge. Our untrained eyes found several fossils.
Arthur Hurlburt
Great scenic views of Louisville. Nice trails for walking. Well manicured lawns and paved walkways.
Christina Payton
Beautiful scenery and an amazing experience. A must see with the family. Plus it's free!
Melissa Werblo
Great place to walk around and look around or sit and relax with the hubby and the kids! Everyone loves it there!
Shane Ramsey
Nice park with amazing views of downtown Louisville KY. If you are staying in Louisville it's just a 5 minute drive across the bridge. The falls offer a great place to view wildlife as well.
Bridgette Vogel
Absolutely love bringing my kids here, just to explore. Always beautiful place to visit at sunset
vidyadhar abhyankar
A nice place on Ohio river front in Indiana. Offers excellent view of Louisville downtown
nofsinge
I’ve loved this place ever since I was a kid. Great park, my favorite in the area!
Nero Griggs
Great place to watch the sunset. A little uneventful other than that, but that's okay.
Galen Powers
If you watch the water levels, you can have an amazing hike behind the spillway gates in the fall!
Tiffany
Love the view of Louisville from across the river. Absolutely beautiful. The walking path was actually lined with wild strawberries which was pretty neat. The fossil beds weren’t really available to look at since the river was pretty high, but my kids and I still had fun exploring the areas we could! Even the geese were friendly!
garry flanagan
A unique opportunity to see the Ohio River fossil bed and to fish or sit to enjoy the sunset
ryan wilson
So much amazing wildlife. If you can appreciate wildlife, this is a place for you. Always great place to hike.
Weihao Chen
A very quiet park, and has a fantastic view of the Louisville Skyline as well as all the connected bridges. Lots of resting ducks and birds nearby. Nice for relaxing walk during the weekend with family. Sadly the falling tide left many debris and waste on the riverside, and be aware of the public restroom are closed during the winter.
Don Current
This park is just a strip of land along the Ohio River, but that means you've got great access to the river. Lots of driftwood to check out, and of course lots of fossils in the bedrock. This of course depends on the river level at the time.
Lots of parking. There are some picnic areas and pavilions and playground equipment as well.
We didn't spend much time here, it check out the nature center, so we'll definitely be back for that later.
Mandy “Mouse” Curl
I love the view and all the photo opps. Beautiful weather and had cabin fever, great day and spot to enjoy the Wonderful day
isaac murray
The river here is nice, but it's disgusting. There's meth bottles and other litter everywhere.
wagzlite
One of the best places to eat a sandwich alone and take in the scenery. Also good with the family.
Denise Shircliff Jett
On Earth Day I helped clean the area along the river near the falls. It actually was not as bad as I thought it would be, but I pulled 2 full garbage bags out, and gained two t shirts.
Michael Popp
Great place to visit. See the ancient coral reef Louisville is built upon. Lots of paths to exercise on to run or bike along the Ohio River.
John Turnmire
Vast and beautiful. Great place to take young kids to learn and explore.
Wendy Hedlund
I went on A breezy sunny day. Although the water was high and rushing, and muddy, the cliffs are very nice to view the area.
M Franklin
For the (free) fossil beds located along the Ohio river in Clarksville, Indiana, it is a 5. The small museum [3] ($9 - 2020) has visual maps of each ancient era of how Indiana may have looked as an ancient sea bed. Geared more for older kids and adults. Fossil beds are for looking at only. It is illegal to remove any fossils.
Angela Strobel
My beagle loved this place! Lots of big rocks to climb on. Great view of the Ohio River. The sound of the falls is quite relaxing.
Katerina Burnett
Nice park, but really nothing special
Nichole Gantshar
Epic natural exhibit of fossils. Be sure to take one of the tours so you don't miss the fossils.
Brian Reynolds
Nice little place to visit which didnt take up much time at all. Conveniently right off the highway and rich with history.
Margaret Dennis
Such a beautiful and peaceful place... highly recommend..
Xena Chan
Had an amazing time. Got some beautiful pics
Colin Bucki
Beautiful Golden Hour and the Falls!
Patricia Sparks
Very nice outing, informative.
James Hammett
Wonderful park. Has trails, a nice walk on the river bed. Fossils to be found everywhere
Jeff Phillips
Volunteers were on the fossil beds on Saturday morning to help explain what you are seeing in the rocks. Even if you don't care about fossils, it is fun to climb on the rocks.
Denise Goodale
So peaceful and relaxing. We picked up Kingfish that is just down the road and had a picnic at the park. The 5 year old twins ate and were too excited to catch lightening bugs. That was interesting since their favorite thing to do is play on the playground that is there 🤩 …
Robert “B.O.B.” Holzner
I found some awesome spots to take some really good photos of the area.
Don Parks
Very nice small park. Unique views of the Ohio River, Louisville, and fossil bed. Worth a visit
A Verma
Nice spot to relax for a while and enjoy the view. Ran into a local guide who gave us an overview of the history which was a definite bonus.
Herbert Gillis
Awesome view of Louisville and the Ohio River. The quantity of litter was disappointing however, it did not take away from the natural beauty of the area.
lisa quandt
One of our favorite places in Louisville. Still amazes me that you can walk around and just see all the fossils. And some of them are amazingly big. It's just so thrilling!
Shaun Williams
It always feels nice go here and relax. Been coming here since I was a kid, now I'm bringing my son here. ✨🏞️ …
Steve Atwell Jr
Even after 25+ years of fishing below the dam, i can honestly say i still look forward to each trip knowing how high the likelihood of seeing, learning, or experiencing something new is. The park continues to improve every year with easier access from the sand area below the parking lot down to the bank, and i would really like to give some appreciation to the DNR and park staff for staying faithful to parking pass envelope system... it is so convenient to use and i have never seen the box empty of envelopes or full of wet ones from rain. $2 to leave my truck under a light and to leave some info on our fishing party on the envelope just makes good sense... thanks so much!
Buster Brown
Been visiting the, Falls of the Ohio State Park since I was a kid. Love walking down the river bank. There's always something new to see. The water floods and brings all kinds of stuff with it. It's a good place for a picnic or just a nature walk. There's always someone fishing too.
Stephen Sullivan
not quite what I expected, but I went in October.
Best Friends RVing-Sailing
Wonderful place to hike or bike. We enjoyed our day there immensely.
Sahara McElroy
I come here often with my partner. We love to go down to the water and dance. This is our spot.
Jibba Jabba
This is my favorite place to fish in the world. Too many species of fish to name and most are better than average size with occasional monsters. The fossil beds are my favorite but there are many other spots that are good to fish depending on what the water level is. If it's your first time fishing here bring extra hooks, line, sinkers and bait. You will get snagged many times, and you will lose many hooks and sinkers. After you learn the current and the fossil beds basic layout, you can cast snag free and reel in plenty of fish. While fishing here you have an amazing view of downtown Louisville which is lit up by colorful lights. To anyone who comes into this wonderful and beautiful park, be respectful of nature and please don't leave trash here. I remove a grocery bag of garbage every visit and I always find more trash than my last visit. Only take photos and memories while leaving only footprints.
Robin 5.2.84
Gorgeous setting, can be very romantic, or a great place to take the kids as well.
Diana & Steve Thompson
Beautiful river below the dam. Very difficult to fish.
Kristen Schmidt
Quiet and peaceful! Got some absolutely stunning pics today! Great place to fish!
Cliff Hunt
neat. would have enjoyed the interpretive center, but it was closed when we were there. decent signage around park explaining things. no way to get to the fossil grounds without a boat, which is not available at park. did find some fossils while walking. park really needs a good cleanup with plastic trash littering the park horribly. I'm sure they clean it occasionally, but it was particularly bad when we went. also had oil sheen emerging from sand. some people fishing for catfish.
Josh Cundiff
If you don't enjoy this part of the Louisville area, you shouldn't have even came to town. This is where you realize how important Louisville is in the history of the United States. Lewis and Clark began here and the fact that you're standing on top of where the ocean used to be. Great fishing also.
Jill Guthrie
Great local, educational, and outdoor experience! Totally different experience than any other park, not too crowded, beautifully maintained. The exposed fossil beds are one of a kind. My "indoor" kids actually want to go back! The visitor's center is very informative and interactive, but I was surprised that there is a fee to go through the main part. (Though I was happy to support the park!)
Lou Morgan
It is a neat park, dam, fossil bed with a nice visitors center & museum. Amazingly it was the only site of rapids/falls on the large Ohio River. You can get down to the rivers edge there.
Michael T
Trees, geese, birds and green grass, next to the Ohio River, on windy rainy day. When I arrived here to relax, the rain took a break.

The wether was perfect park was clean and not so many people were there .Enjoyed watching the sun set .
Ben
The neighborhood is not very nice, but the view is good!
Stephanie Rouse Cantrell
We went on the cultural pass through the public library and we were not impressed with the museum. Luckily we didnt have to pay admission because the price they ask the museum definitely isnt worth it. We loved walking around outside, but that was free.
Bryan V Spellman
A wonderful small State Park located on the southern shore of Indiana. The Visitors Center/Museum is top notch. The hiking on the shore of the Ohio is small but adventurous. Lots of cool fossil hunting (leave them be, you can not take them but the kids enjoy finding them) and fantastic photo opportunities. Part of the Lewis and Clark trail, the Clark cabin home is part of the park, a quick 1 mile drive west.
Christian “Kakarot”
Omg seeing how much the water had raised after all that rain was Insane! Absolutely love how it just picks up 200lb trees like it’s paper 🤩🤩🤩 …
Tia Coatley
Beautiful area with lots to look at. Gorgeous as the sun is setting. Should definitely wear tennis shoes. No bathroom on site.
Andrew Parker
One of the prettiest places around great to relax and enjoy the outdors
Lauren (Rose)
Great views of Louisville downtown
Jessica Castribrightma
Fossel beds Amen looks like the New kingdom of God in scripture
Crystal Buzinec
Loved it! The lady behind the counter could've been more pleasant. Definitely would go back.
tammy st
How often do you get to explore a fossilized sea bed? Totally worth a visit.
Konfident Miss Bling
This place was beautiful! Stumbled upon it when I saw the sign after getting off the expressway.
Misty Chandler
Good place to walk around and enjoy the day. Great place for rock crawler rc cars too.
jeannie dixon
What a pleasant find! Lots of views. Interesting history. Nice hiking trails.
George Milburn
It was a great time right on the river sat a playground where the kids played. There was a bathroom there as well allowing us to stay longer
Gigi Fry
Great new exhibits, especially attractive to children and young people. Oldest continuous exposure of Devonian rocks in the world. It is a federal landmark close to where George Rogers Clark had his home and Merriweather Lewis and William Clark (George's brother) set off for their famous expedition of the Louisiana Purchase. There are hikes and programming, just check out the website. Do note that in the summer of 2023 the state plans to update the air in the interpretative center so the state plans for the building to be closed from June - August 2023.
Joe Davis
Interesting place to take kids. If your older it's a little rough getting to the fossil beds at the river. Nice views.
Literally LiFe
Amazing little river park. Not much for hiking but the views of the dam, bridges and louisville are amazing. Saw some people fishing
Marie Jackson
We love to ride down to the Falls of the Ohio and check out the Fossil Beds. It is a special place.
Allen Snyder
Great for the family and friends!: very reasonable priced admissions!
Lord Quas
Perfect place to get outside for a little while! Make sure you go when the water levels are low so you can explore the fossil beds!
Elizabeth Kowall
Such a unique place. Very pretty, tons of exploring to be done, so bring a water bottle and spend the day!
Rusty Day
We celebrated my 50th birthday here
With many of my tiny truckin friends!

This park is so beautiful. Was a lot of fun exploring.
Lee Shockney
Beautiful amazing place. A plethora of Wildlife. Great place for bird watching and fossil viewing.
Renee Collins
Beautiful park. The fossil beds were absolutely fascinating and there are free places to park if you don't mind walking a little ways. Great place to spend a day!
Michelle Oliver
An amazing date spot! A fun hike and plenty of spots to take a selfie with you date and a lot of history to learn.
Jayke Brown
Surprised the museum cost to enter but otherwise nice place to visit!
Marilyn CW
A nice place to watch the sunsets from Indiana. Bring the kids or just go on a nice river walk.
Eugene Backlund
Really nice park. They have a self tour that has a fee to enter.
Sheree Grove
I loved it i couldn't get down to the bottom caz I'm in a wheelchair chair but the view was outstanding
Tyler Ayers
If you need something to do with the kids or you just find fossil hunting then this is the place to go. They have an interpretive cent that open during the day with cool fossil displays and information about the area. My son loves going down here all the time to climb on the rocks, look for caves, and search for new fossils. I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn about the past or teach there children geological history.
Kleyz
I wish the visitor center wasn't so expensive. I wouldnt mind a few dollars but 9 per adult is a bit much.
JRThiker
Great visitor center, and easy walk down to the river.
Marlena Shelton
Awesome place to walk around and check out the views!
Crystal D.
Absolutely love going here, especially when the water level is down and you can explore the rocks and river bed. Great place to take your family.
Christopher Robinson
Extremely pretty falls, friendly for dogs & family. Must visit
julian walter
Awesome place to just to find a pretty view, but i would not recommend hike for there is lots of river trash on them.
SeFok Chan
Nice view of the Ohio River and the Louisville skyline. However there is no easy access to go down to the river.
Ni N.
Good area for walking , enjoyed the river breeze
Bruce Landis
Incredible views of the Ohio River Falls, wildlife. Wonderful hiking and biking trails in the Greenway stretching from Jeffersonville to New Albany.
Jose Avila
Fossil beds need to be made more accessible. Sites of interest are hard to find.
Jana LaRue
Nice and informative education centre and beautiful sights!
Margaret “ReeReeKey” Carranza Garcia
The flowers blooming in the summer are phenomenal. Though I'll walk it anytime of the year just a gorgeous place to see a bit of nature and the wilderness of the Ohio river.
Carlos Garcia
It's so good for spending time walking around.
bill kyes
Great park. Great views. Will go back soon.
Jacqueline Parchem
Beautiful views and clean park.
Sourav Chakraborty
Pretty good spot to watch a sunset under the shady trees. There are some fossilized rocks to look at as well.
Jan Mietus (DVE)
Real nice place for all kinds of activities.
Charlie Boyce
We were pleasantly surprised to to find how much we enjoyed hiking in a dry riverbed!
Tina Marie Demerath
The museum is very expensive, and only expresses an evolutionary point of view, rather than viewing history through the possibility of a Created beginning.
Parking is inexpensive, at $2.00.
Trails down to the fossil beds are not well marked, but it isn't far down to the rocks just above the river.
The view is lovely, exploring is fun, and there are lots of spots to enjoy a picnic.
This visit, I was glad to see several port-a-potties outside, for those who do not visit the museum.
Overall, worth a stop!
joshua smith
Beautiful place. Cool fossils.
Gary Kibble
Great place to find fossil seashells. the only fee is parking.
shawn pambianco
Pretty place to visit, cool fossil exhibit.
Ariale Schell
This was such a beautiful, scenic walk with my family. The views were breathtakingly wonderful. Definitely worth the stop. Great for dates, family time, or even pictures.
Gregory Earl Allen
If you’re interested in fossils from the Denosovian period you will love it here! The fossil beds are huge. We had guide’s from the Park Service explain the many types of fossils which made it interesting.
Ericka Gayle
Great day trip drive from Indy. Fossil beds are really neat to walk through.
Mz Burnz
I love this park! Ollie Doggie does too! Crazy photogenic scenery.
Michael Wallace
This is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and nature! I love it!!
Adam “Spaceboy311420” Puckett
Great place to hike along the trails. My dog also loves it here
justime74
Great place to hike and take in the skyline of the city
Dana Money
Fun trip to take the whole family to. Nice wheelchair accesibility.
Joey Cohen
While this park is generally pleasant, it can vary a lot throughout the year. Sometimes you can wander through the woods and explore the fossil beds and see some pretty awesome views of the city all while not encountering any trash. But other times, the bank is covered in trash and the woods are either too muddy to walk through or completely overgrown. Overall it’s more good than bad, but whenever you come here you gotta be aware that it might not be the right day
Jenn H
Had a great time climbing on rocks and searching for fossils. The center was very comfortable to relax and watch a few short shows to rest your feet. The exhibit had a lot of information about the past and present of the Falls of Ohio. Will go back again to explore soon!
John Stevenson
Nice views of the river and Louisville skyline
Scott Powers
A great location for a number of activities. Folks were biking, walking, picnicing, and fishing. Great place to do a photoshoot with a number of great backgrounds. I'll be back for sure.
Erna LaBeau
Very nice and well maintained. I visited this park on first week of April 2021. It looks like it got flooded lately they just cleaned the path for the wheelchair. Access for the wheelchair ramp is on the right side of the information building and the stairs is right behind the building. Many valuable info regarding the ecosystems can be found in the building there is a tour fee. The whole park is designed for easy access for wheelchair ♿ and they provide device for hearing impaired as well👂Please do not forget to wear mask!
Traveler
Very scenic, but not really Falls
Kieren Heinle
Beautiful fishing spot just across the river from Louisville. We visited on Saturday for the first time and caught 3 fish!
Ivy Gaulin
Very nice hike to see the falls and river!
Trevor Kinkade
A surprising gem. We stopped here and had a picnic. The beach is littered with logs and fun debris, but its novel, really.
Blair Browning
We love to visit nature but I feel like the the center could use some awareness. Maybe a science party here or there....
Nicolas Bravo
Great place for a walk or bicycle ride

The fossil beds were absolutely realistic to see and the museum was very interesting, including the gift shop, I would come back here anytime soon
Terry York
Best views of the city in town. The museum tours are led by very knowledgeable staff, and the exhibits are superb esp for the little dinosaur lovers! The geese were a trip to watch. There's a couple of nice little bikes in the forest and a busy bike trail snakes through the grounds. Parking is cheap, like $2.00
Lorinda Fox
Nice
Peaceful setting
Dog friendly
Always enjoy the visit
Tess Priddy
This is one of my favorite places to go and sit quietly with my dog and reflect, and recharge.
Noah Stemann
This is the spot to be. Walking right under the train is cool ngl
Ryan Scarbrough
Lovely sunsets over the Ohio river. Fossil beds are amazing. Best view of Louisville!
MBS 2030 (INSTAGRAM THE_THINKER3)
You can see the skyscraper of Louisville from here 😍
Falls of the Ohio State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located on the banks of the Ohio River at Clarksville, Indiana, across from Louisville, Kentucky. The park is part of the Falls of the Ohio National Wildlife Conservation Area. The exposed fossil beds of the Jeffersonville Limestone dated from the Devonian period are the main feature of the park,
Harriett Pack
Great place to review history of the area
Pat McGroyne
A great place to spend any amount of time. The fossil beds are incredible. The interpretative center has a great history exhibit of the area, and the bird viewing area would be much cooler without the rats. Really not sure what that's about. *SHUDDER*
Joshua Hayes
Okay stop. This park should be better. This is where Lewis and Clark met each other for their epic journey.
Teadora Monteith
great park, cool visitor center. the park is free but the exhibit is around $10 I believe
Terrance Ray Trybus
Nice walking park. Didn't have much time to spend there, but a great view of Louisville from across the river.
Tina Arteaga
We plan on coming back when it's warmer out. Beautiful state park!
Holly Baumer
This is an amazing place! There is a park, an interpretive center, and of course, the fossil beds. It's a great place to bring children to learn as well as work out their energy in a climbing, and walking adventure. There is parking, and wheelchair available access to get down to the viewing area, as well as a beautiful huge deck off the back of the interpretive center with binocular machines. The view is open, offering a nice skyline scene of Louisville. It is a nature-lovers dream, perfect for couples, friends, family, and individuals who just want to enjoy some quiet time to take in real history and beauty. You can even fish off the banks (if you have a license!).
Ben Pearson
Just wish the river wasn't so polluted. It's nice to see some fossils.
Steve Ambs
Nice place to visit & hike around on the fossil beds. There are sidewalks you can walk along near the river. Small parking fee at the park site. Nice view of downtown Louisville. If you go into the museum, there is a fee to watch a 15 min video about the area & to walk through a interactive collection of fossils & artifacts. Small gift shop you can get a souvenir. Staff were friendly & knowledgeable. Great place to take the kids.
Ken M
Very much enjoyed seeing the thousands of fossilized remains of plant and animal life from the Devonian era...390 million years ago...all around us as we explored the dry river bottom. Very cool. The History/ Nature Center tour was not worth the money in our opinion. Maybe $5.00 per person instead of $9.00 would be more reasonable.
Shilpakala Chetan
A beautiful place to spend time with family and friends. The walkway along the shore gives a beautiful view of the bridges, dam, concrete structures and the horizon.
This place is good for picnic, fishing and for strolling; there are good number of benches and shelters on the shore to enjoy the views.
Kristina
Really beautiful. A great overlook of the city. Lots of shade for picnics. So fun to walk alongside the Riverbank. I would have to say the museum itself is not worth the money at all...very small and overpriced for what it has to offer, but all the outdoor opportunities makes it a 5 star rating for me.
Jay Baker
This is just the tip of the iceberg for the parks in this area. I just recently took up bicycling and the trail starts here and goes all the way to New Albany which is a nice little trip. This part is especially beautiful because you're right by the river
Becca Boo
I Love walking down at the river. It's so beautiful. I like being able to see louisville. I also love how their are so many rocks to walk on when the water is super low, You can almost walk across the river at certain times. Do not play on the flood gates, I’ve seen so many people do this & you could easily die. Also if you hear the siren get away from the water, if you’re by the Museum & down by the water when the siren goes off it means the flood gates are about to open & the water level will rapidly rise & the currents will be bad. So be safe everyone.
JeffreyB 1983
Great park, just a note to outsiders that the fossil beds are only accessible during low water, usually during late summer and fall. That time of year is also ideal for bird watching for the wide variety of birds in the rapids. During high water there is a small but high quality museum but little walking areas.
F P
What a beautiful scenic and picturesque parked to visit. I've been here a couple of times and it's still all inspiring. take some time to go through the building and see all it has to offer before making your way down to the river. Comfortable walkways with handicapped accessibility. Lots of difference of events and things to partake in in this particular part. Far more expansive than one might imagine at initial glance
Lisa Massey
Absolutely wonderful park! Plenty of parking at a very reasonable rate of $2 at self pay. A variety of places to view the river & falls with handicap access ♿ & ramps including one quite close to the river. The fossil beds are a wonderful walk without being too rugged with accessibility is completely river level dependent. The fossil beds are NOT wheelchair or handicap accessible due to the nature of the river's edge & fossils location. Picnic tables & trash cans available.
john edwards
Hike around the fossil beds! It's so beautiful!! I highly recommend this park! Make sure and visit the museum as well!
Vanessa Umaña
The place has a trail you can walk around the river or you can actually go down where the water is. they have a little gift shop, scenery is pretty nice.
Pete McCracken
Awesome park for history and archeology
Jeremy Bertrand
Great park and great staff. I love checking the fossil beds at different water levels.
Josh B
This place was a total vibe. Fossil beds, misty rain, and WW2 air sirens going off as they release the dam water. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.
Esther Frazer
Wow, really nice walk down the river! Climbing over the rocks was fun but not strenuous.the wall continues through a wooded area for a bit too which was nice for variety. Lots of fallen limbs around for the children to climb on.
Kim Laun
We are lucky to have such a great park in our area to see fossils from when it was a tropical sea. Finding fossils and exploring is great. The park has a welcome center with exhibits helping people to be able to find fossils once you go down toward the river. This is a great family attraction for any age.
Sagnik Bhadury
It's a beautiful place. The river bed offers such an interesting historical journey, that is pretty much unparalleled around the area.
Toniibelle Xo
Beautiful scenery, great trails, fossil beds, icecream shop and bike rental down the road.
Indira Bekto
Amazing Place to visit!
Sam Montgomery
Highly recommend if you like fossils, or small hikes.

Absolutely one of my favorite places to go walking when we lived in Clarksville Because it is ON the river this is an endlessly changing park. This area is rich with pre-history, indigenous, and American history. The Interpretive Center is interesting and fun to visit as well. Do not go to the fossil beds on a sunny afternoon in the summer, it is sweltering. Great for hiking by myself or with older children. Rocky areas can be challenging or even dangerous for the very young. My own ADHD 4 year old daughter (and later my grandson) used to give me a heart attack down there.
Matthew Wallace
I’m from Louisville, and this is one of my favorite places around town. It’s cool to just walk up the river bank exploring and seeing what you can find. Tons of driftwood, cool rocks, interesting garbage to check out. My cousin fishes there, but I always end up walking around and finding neat stuff. Good place right in the city to quiet your mind.
Dessa Hix
What a beautiful park! The walking trails are welcoming and the river views are spectacular. It was so fun to clamber over the rocks near the river's edge and spot amazing fossils. Thank you to the lovely gentleman who let me look through his telescope at the herons!
Kyle Winning
Nice view of the wier structure and you can find fossils if the river is at normal stage.
Pat Leuthart
Path to the falls are blocked handicap people can't get buy
Trapper Man
Has a museum of sorts with lots of good information, a gift shop, and the Fossil beds are awesome to walk on. And yes, you can even fish here.
Jad Faris
Awsome place to watch thunder over Louisville. Backdrop of the city of Louisville was awsome.
William Henderson
This is one great place to visit. The absolute best time is when the water levels are low. Meaning the flood gates are not wide open. You can see some incredible dinosaur fossils with the naked eye. Picnic tables, restrooms, and the Cultural Center with great views too boot.
Brandon Cochran
Aside from the beautiful landscapes, this park is clean and educational. My kids loved it and we can't wait to go back! Fun for all ages.
Amber Darnell
Such a neat place
Roy Jolly
Wonderful views of nature and industry together
Kenny Marcum
Awesome place to visit and view the Ohio river and downtown Louisville.
Jim McMullin
Massive rushing water that looks like it will completely take a boat under but appears to be a very good fishing area did see a boat scurrying around the outer edges of the falls. Overall overall a beautiful place to go visit.
Jasmine Burden
Open or closed, there are many spots to read about the history pertaining to the area. Full access to the falls by way of sturdy steps with railing. My children love looking for fossils here, they put them back for others to explore and find. Also a great drift wood spot for your next project!
Derc2u
It's just a really cool way to spend an afternoon. It is also a very cheap way to spend an afternoon. Although...I do think more people need to pay for the exhibit...we are never too old to learn and there was some interesting things to read and view.
kydrone82

This place is really cool especially if you're into this kind of stuff. It's wheelchair accessible but only to a certain point. What i mean is the ramps take you down so far and that's it. If you have kids that are wired for sound great place. I would take my girls down there and we would take trash bags and pick up trash. Makes you feel good that you are helping clean up something so beautiful great feeling. Check it out its great.
Joel Mohring
Vast area to explore. Went there for fishing but there was no current so not much there.
David Huncherick
This is a truly historic spot from when it served as the base for Brigadier General George Rogers Clark as he defended the western front from the British during the American Revolution and was where his younger brother William Clark met Meriwether Lewis and from which point they set off together on their famous expedition. It is a popular spot for tourists now who come to see the fossil beds exposed by the modern dams.
Melanie Murphy
The fossil beds are so fun to jump around on and discover fossils. The Discovery center was fantastic. Kids ages 5-10 that went with us enjoyed our time. We had limited time and walked it very quickly in about 40 min. I would give yourself an 60-90min in the center and just as much down by the river.
Justin Carpenter
Nice park. Pretty good fishing. Cool trails.
Debra Radford
Very interesting park. Enjoyed very much
Lisa Kelley
So unique. Huge fossil beds you can walk on! The dogs loved jumping over the crevices and small pools of water. You can walk right up to the river. Would go again and take a picnic. Warning: there is no shade on the fossil beds, which can get quite hot in the summer.
Cody Blavat
There Well me an my son had a great day down there was there for hours walking around an looking for cool rocks
Grive
Honestly, this place is pretty great. First and foremost, on clear days and nights, you can see the entire Louisville skyline, which at certain angles could be (and probably is) a postcard. The best days to visit are during periods when the river is low, as that is when the fossil beds are exposed and able to be explored. Honestly, it is a great place for any date or family outing.
Roshel Kimber
The fossils were AMAZING!
Angela Steinhaus
Nice park with a nice view of the Ohio river. The river was up when we visited, but I can imagine how beautiful it would be when the river was down. The fossil beds that we could see were cool and there was a gentleman there who told us when the river is down, there is so much more of the fossil bed that you can go out on and see more. He also showed us some of the birds with his telescope that you couldn't see without magnification. It was great.
Cola_is cool
It's flooded but you can still go down a little ways

Whether you are a local or just passing through, he Falls of the Ohio should be a required trip in the Louisville area. The combination of natural wonder, sterling facilities, and outstanding volunteers cement this local gem's place as one of the area's true treasures.
I recently visited with a group of adult learners, and was surprised to see that much of the interpretive center had been revamped since my last visit. Even the movie at the beginning of the exhibit hall was updated. Continuing into the exhibits themselves, I found the center to have a great mix of natural and human history of the area. There were also lots of interactive/ hands-on activities to keep things interesting.
We then traveled a mile and a half down the road to the William Clark homestead, where we were greeted by Mark, a volunteer who had agreed to share a part of his morning with us even though he was not scheduled to be there. His enthusiasm and mastery of William Clark's history in the area added greatly to an already fantastic visit.
Louisville is often cited as an up-and-coming city, with more and more to do every day. This visit was a great reminder to keep the Falls on that list of things to do. I highly recommend a visit to this sometimes overlooked jewel.
Lance Marples
Went here last week on a casual hike and was thrown into a fascinating world of natural wonder.
Immediately I began searching for Indian arrow heads (which I have been told of by a friend).
The opportunity to find such historically significant objects immediately grabbed my attention and the next 2 hrs were a most satisfying experience! Alas, I never found any points, but the search was worth it.
I plan to visit the Falls park much more frequently now and suggest doing so for anyone interested in connecting to local and historic nature.

Great place to have fun 💖 …
Xierra Curry
Tons of fun! Both my kids loved the museum and walking on the falls.
Hillary Sullins
Cool to walk around the pits. We spent probably 30-40 minutes fossil hunting then another 45ish minutes at the indoor exhibit. To reviewers who whine it’s kid-focused... all science-y centers are kid focused because they’re not boring. We’re all kids at heart. If we were kids though we’d spend more time, I’m sure.
Peg Hausman
Very interesting and educational. The Visitor Center has all sorts of exhibits and short films explaining about the history and the prehistory of the place, and the flats along the river have an extraordinary abundance of fossils to look at. They're not especially easy to get to, but the experience is worth the scrambling. It will be even better when the visitor center gets its new film in, which should happen in a week or two.
Nanci Dively
Beautiful park! Plenty of parking. It's free to go to the shore of the Ohio, but if you want to view the museum there is a cost. I'd highly recommend the museum. It's fun, interactive and interesting. Make sure you check the river levels before you go. We tried to go once and it was flooded. There's markers regarding how high the river got during major floods, it's astounding! My kids love looking for fossils - just make sure you leave the fossils there. There's a small gift shop on the inside of the building.
*-Salena-*
Great for a "in-town" place for different skill levels of hiking. Regular trails and plenty of off trail rocky terrain. Can find rocks with geodes inside to crack open if you keep your eyes open too. Depending on water levels you can stand atop fast rushing water in one area and a stagnant area for those who want to fish just around a bend....and of course, the Fossils to find ;-)
Richard Amos
Really stunning park for being so close to the city. The waterfalls after rain are intense. Saw lots of wildlife here - the sound of the birds is pretty deafening!
Lovely visitor centre with some really interesting artefacts.
Mark Shanks
Really cool fossil beds! Amazing!
Billie Jean Mitchell
I share my history with place and so will my children and their children
Escobaria Gracilis
Good views of the river bed, fossils and of the Louisville skyline.
Levinus Haines
Largest exposed fossil bed in the United States. Great fun to roam around and explore. Visitor's Center has a gift shop and cool exhibits. Parks and play grounds all over!
Julie McGill
I've been to Falls several times. School field trips mostly. Just today brought my husband. Located several fossils, bryozoans mostly. We stayed outdoors because of Covid and our ages. Very fun!
TA B
Spectacular fossil-filled rock formations and friendly park rangers and tour guides to show them to you.
Kids and rockhounds will love the rock piles where you can search for your own fossils near the parking lot.
mike Stephens
Always peacefull.. And while fishing I came across a T Rex
Luke Sewing
Nice place to walk with great views!
Thomas jr
A lovely place for an afternoon adventure. Many things to explore, along the waterfront. Enjoy scenic views of the Louisville skyline. Walk along the exposed fossil beds, (weather permitting). Make your way to the Big 4 Bridge. Then you're only 7 minutes away from the George Rodgers Clark house, in the Lewis and Clark park.
Leah Lawson
So glad we stumbled on this place on our drive. It was fun to spend some time looking for fossils and enjoying the view.
Joseph Windell
Such an excellent place to be outside and learn about the development and history of the Ohio river. The staff were very polite and helpful. They even offered to let us inside to use the restroom before they were open. The Lewis and Clark movie was super well done! I was sad that I couldn't stay for the whole thing! A great place for people visiting the area or just looking for an interesting way to spend their afternoon.
Matthew Hiserodt
Went here with two of my kids during a weekend in Louisville. Fossils were cool to see but don't think they are all over the place or super impressive. The falls, likewise are neat to view from this angle. Did not pay to go into the visitors center. Total time spent there: 20 minutes.
Aaron Imlay
Who knew that a place like this was so close! If you are in the area, this is worth a visit!
Kristy Ruhl
Great place to explore fossils. The water was to high for us to walk out in it.
Emily Ross
What a wonderful place to visit. While I have lived in the area for years, this was my first visit to the museum and cabin. I found informative and appropriate in length and content for all ages and abilities. I specifically want to acknowledge Mark Meggs for taking time out of his schedule to volunteer to meet and give us so much useful information!!! This is a hidden gem!
Michael Price
Very interesting Vista point and exhibit building. You must see the fossils down near the water.
Lindsay
The Falls has some wonderful events, and is a great place to take a walk or have a picnic.
Sarah Stoffregen
Great fun looking at all the cool fossils in the rocks. My kids and I loved it.
Bebe Salva
I love taking pictures down there but today it's windy and cold.
Echo Eternal
Great education center with interest for all ages. You can walk along the banks of the Ohio and see fossils and drift wood. There are also guided walks.
Betty Badass
Beautiful scenery and SO MANY FOSSILS! Took my 6 year old and got a good work out for us both climbing and jumping over rocks. Great place for kids but just be careful 😊 …
Funke Konrad
Always a great place to walk, bike, look at fossilized shells and catch a glimpse of downtown Louisville.
May Smith
This is an amazing place right outside Louisville for the coolest scenery. It's an amazing background for photos with unique foliage and cliff faces. Plus if the water is low it is so cool to walk out by the water!
Steve Lasley
Really cool place to visit! Especially if your into fossils and history. I highly recommend stopping by if your just traveling through the area!
Fred Perkins
Great place to stop , sit on a park bench, and relax watching the big muddy roll by. By the way if you notice what you might mistake as dog droppings, don't blame the pooches. The culprits are those fine feathered sometimes friendly Canadian geese who came, and stayed..
Kyle Herman
I visited the park today with my colleagues for an education training program, and as always, the site did not disappoint. The timeline in the interpretive center offers a powerful sense of the deep time history of the Earth story, and within that larger context, the rest of the information pertaining to our local place becomes much more meaningful. The aesthetics and quality of the exhibits throughout the interpretive center make the experience both enjoyable and educational.
Lauren Lightle
The tour here is very informative and inexpensive for families. We also ride our bikes down by the river and go for walks and explore down by the bank to make a day of it. Dont forget to get your ice cream at the widows walk when they are open!
Waun Lavada
Very beautiful park and scenery!
Mary Ferren
You should go to the Falls, even if you don't check out the interpretative center. When the fossil beds are exposed, you can see so many fossils in the rock! It is a great place to check out the river and walk around. I've been coming here since I was a teenager, and I never grow old of it!
Marissa Phelps
Great time fishing and exploring
Shannon Montgomery
This is always been one of my favorite places to visit since I was a little girl and came hear the first time on a school field trip I've loved it ever since Isle of the Fossil Beds I love this place. Very peaceful very peaceful! It's a very beautiful and calming environment recommend to visit at least one time if you've never been here promise it's something you'll never forget
Kathie Miller
I have loved this place since before it was a park. My ancestors fished and hunted here. But for everyone else, the fossils and the river are plenty interesting enough, and the interpretive center is recently updated. You can buy state park passes and boat stickers in the interpretive center.
Mark Wyssbrod
An Interesting and Fun Place for the Family!
Mister Me
This has always been a getaway spot for me. The area is beautiful with or without the flood gates open. The trails are fun for all ages. When the gates are closed, the fossil bed area is a great way to spend hours with the family or with your significant other. You can easily spend a day here taking in all that nature has to offer. Even in the winter time, the fun never ends. The gift store looks to hold many intersting items, but in all of my years visiting the Falls, I have not yet been in the building. This is a veat place to visit. Widow's Walk is a MUST visit!
Lawrence Brown
Simply, beautiful location to observe the Ohio River. From the Indiana side
Starla Knight
Ive been there multiple times but have never done a guided fossil walk until this visit. Allen ( I believe that was his name) was great! He was very informative and didn't mind being asked lots of questions.
Ruth Semones
The water had dropped and on can see the fossils. I have been to the park a few years. My mother Heidi Semones took us there many times. Before the park preserved it. We would count the train cars over the mighty river, we had a great time with tea and pp&j. I am sure they still have train cars. I also crossed the bridge many years ago. It was very scaring cross the overtly of the dam.
Jaclyn Mersereau
Relaxing, peaceful, great trails.
Maria Cox
Super cool place to visit!
Valerie TenBrink
Great area. When the river is low you can walk out on the river bed. Picked up a lot of trash but the fossils in the bed are fun to find.
Anthony Olvera
I love this place they had an awesome view of the Ohio river also they have a historic museum there too beautiful park to walk run ride your bike family Friendly and it's really big great place for outdoors come and check it out for yourself you will love it too
Greg Harty
Many people told me to visit when the water levels were low like August and September. I am sure that more of the incredible fossils would be visible but I was very pleased when we went in July. We saw plenty of fossils and they were much larger and more plentiful than I imagined. These fossil beds are some of the oldest exposed areas around.
Emilee McClure
Beautiful views. Took my 2 year old daughter here and walked around the woods. It's a great place to sight see or just go fishing. There's also the building to see the history of the park.
Jarrett Cole
Loves this place it’s a great place to go no matter the season. You should also visit the museum after your down walking around.
Christine Crites
I was pleasantly surprised how nice the city line view is from here. Once night falls it’s absolutely beautiful!
Randall Robinson
Beautiful walk and center
Troy Windhorst
Nice park. I have visited many, many times, yet I have never visited the on-site museum (which has an admission fee). Visiting this park on the Ohio River's rocky edge offers two completely different experiences depending on whether or not the dam gates are open or closed. When the gates are wide open, the water is rushing and crashing all around rocks like a scene from a New England coastline. When the gates are nearly closed, the water recedes and reveals a rocky, moon-like surface that covers a large area. It is cool experience walking around in the area when dry. Following a westward trail along the shoreline shows off a convoluted, rocky edge with little "mini-canyons" carved by the river of hundreds of years. Walking this area makes for an exciting, all-natural obstacle course... very fun. While the museum on-site charges the admission fee, it is free to visit all the outdoor areas described above. They do charge a couple of bucks to park, though. Any outdoor enthusiast should enjoy a great afternoon here. It's an inexpensive place to entertain children... just be careful around the river, of course. One of these days, I need to visit that museum!
T.J. Trumbo
Great information! Nice facility! A little small, but still nice. Maybe tell the whole truth about YORK (BIG MEDICINE) and what he really did for the Lewis and Clark exploration? He was a key player in the journey and it wasn't even mentioned! Why?
Steven Duckett
I love going down to the falls of the Ohio, I only wish they had a pathway or trail to.get down to the river. The way it's set up now, older people, handicapped people, strollers & such will not be able to make the journey down to the river. I just wish it were more accessible for everyone because it is such a serene place to be able to bask in the warm sun laying on a huge rock, listening to the river go by.
Casey Riley
I walk here virtually every day. It's usually clean except right down on the river where all the garbage seems to find its way to the shore with the drift wood. The views of Louisville from here are great too. I really enjoy going down to the fossil beds and trying to find the ones from the earliest devonian period of about 400 million years ago when this area was as far south of the equator as it is north today!
J Robertson
It was a 2 hr stop to view the falls and walk around the park. Finished the stop with a delicious Ice Cream from Widows Walk Creamery and sat and watched the boats go by, lovely time
Heath Smith
Nice park and facility. Concrete walk down River bank leads to fossiliferous rock formations. There are some piles in the back of the parking lot for kids to dig in but we're rather hard/set up. They were redoing the observation deck when we were there and we learned that last entrance to museum granted at about 4 since it takes about an hour and they close the doors to the facility at 5 (at least on the day we were there). Even closed you can still park and walk to River. Signs say $2 fee for parking.
B Breutinger
Love going here to walk and watch the birds. You never know what might show up. When the fossil beds are exposed, it is really fun to explore them. Staff is very helpful whenever I have a question. You have to pay to park at the center, but if you can walk a bit, parking is free nearby. My only suggestion would be to have more benches or shady places up on the hill. It can get really hot out there exposed to the sun.
Justin Wilson
Really nice place to visit plenty of fossils to look at very interesting
Adam Cornett
Wonderful view of the city from this side, especially if you take a little walk down the road from the main center. Beach access near the office, huge area to bike or jog, whole place seems kid friendly. Goose warning, for those who know what those devils are capable of.
allen englert
Nice place to visit when the river is down. Fossils from 350 million years ago.
Bob Sallee
Participated in an archealogical weekend event. What a treasure! Excellent shaded picnic areas with scenic vistas overlooking the Ohio River. Tours of the fossil beds were informative and very family friendly. The narrative center is fun and educational with a gift shop that has family friendly pricing.
Melanie Chaykoski
Beautiful scenery, very clean. Great palce to bring the kids and pets :)
CECE333 H
So much to explore and a very beautiful view of the Ohio river, picknick tables, kids small park, museum, walking strips
John Mathatas
Great guides (we went during a scheduled exploratory event), excellent facility, knowledgeable staff, family friendly. Tons to see as far as fossils and local wildlife. Advise checking the water level as this directly impacts being able to the various lower fossil beds.
Brandon L
Pandemic really had area shut down, then the excessive rain shut down the rest. Nice area to walk though.
Jake Allgeier
Beautiful geologic wonder! I've visited many times and am always pleased with what I see. I recommend looking up current water levels online before visiting as they vary day to day and can really effect what you see when you get there. Try to visit when the water is as low as possible, much more of the fossil beds are exposed then. Also, it's fun to check out the old railroad bridge and Army Corps' dam. The force of water flowing through the gates can be tremendously impressive!
Stacey A
Awesome place to get a view of the Louisville skyline! We came away with fabulous pictures. There were several people there after dark just looking at the lights. There is plenty of parking and restrooms. Great place to visit!
Ken Pickerill
Great exhibits and films, learned a lot about the Falls history and geology. Water was too high to see the majority of the fossil beds, but the area is very nice! Had a great meal after we went to restaurant row in downtown Jeffersonville.
Jonathan Mays
Very friendly place great to take the kids on a fossil adventure, wheel chair active. Plus the museum is right there. Along with bike trail, walk trails and all sorts of fun stuff..
fishface123ism
So fascinating. And the fossil beds remind me of how it takes millions of years for starlight to reach us...it took millions of years for the fossils to form. Plus, looking at McAlpine dam is awe inspiring as well. And the Interpretive Center is very well done! And the walking paths are such a great way to exercise, or biking too.
Cynthia Nokes
Interesting place to visit! History lesson about how our area formed and details about the planet and animal life that once inhabited the Falls as well as fossil walks through the fossil needs. Wheelchair accessible, to the starting edge of the fossil beds.
Heidi C.
Great place to get out and check out the fossils. Great for kids and adults alike. Just be sure to wear good shoes; it can be rocky in some spots.
Clark Bellar
A favorite place of mine since I was a kid. Went back recently for the first time in over a decade and still enjoyed every minute of it. Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in the natural history of the region and our planet!
Yalonda Sims
Friendly, good customer service. A very nice place to tour, enjoyed 2 short informative movies. Clean, parking available behind center. Nice grounds.
Paul Clark
Very nice and clean park. Good educational things to do for children. They have grills poor you can bring your own. Beautiful view of the Ohio River and the Louisville skyline!
Wayne Law
It's a nice place to go with the tide is low.
Kelly Byrd
Very pretty area just needs better trails to water for strollers.
Selena Waldman
Absolutely beautiful place to visit!! Can't wait to go back!
Jo K
So cool to be on the riverbed looking at thousands of fossils and imagining what it was like and then going through the amazing visitors center. The visitors center has such great displays that appeal to people of all ages and the Lewis and Clark movie set up was so great I didn't want to leave!
Susan McClellon
The people here were very friendly and very knowledgeable. I had a lot of fun fossil hunting with my kids.
pastor kggallahar
Great place to unwind and lose yourself in the great outdoors, being in the fossil beds provides one with the opportunity to enjoy nature and witness the breathtaking power of the mighty ohio river, with wild life all around you there never is a dull moment, you simply have to be observant and patient, this is a great place to enjoy family, hike away
