Reviews of Fort Harrison State Park
Susan Petrey Carriker
Beautiful countryside filled with wildlife and biking trails. If you want to get away from the noise of city life, this is a wonderful place for a long walk or a picnic. There are several nice pavilions for larger groups. Check out the exhibits in the Visitor Center to learn more about the rich history of the park. We enjoyed talking to Patty, the park ranger, and watching the birds feed near the visitor center. It was too hot for hiking, but we hope to return to try out one of the many trails in this park

If you're into the old rustic type venues but is still kept up well and modernized in the right areas, I highly recommend this Inn. I thought it was cool that they had a free continental breakfast. That's the first time I've seen that at a State Park Inn. The park was very educational. The nature center had a fun area that let you load a Ruck sack and show what was essential for a hike.
Ray Lemar
This is a very nice park. Especially if you are into history. Built in 1903 from a land purchase grant from the federal government. Soldiers were housed here in tents, also home to German prisoners of war during World War 2. Also features a seasonal museum, riding stables, and hiking trails.

My first visit and the fall colors were amazing! I strolled along the river bank and past the lake. Nice hills to push yourself if ya want but plenty to take in if you're the four a leisurely stroll. Wil return!
Dustin Norman
It's a piece of God's country nestled in among a urban jungle. The park itself has a multitude of different activities from hiking, fishing, bike trails, and the list doesn't end. But our last visit was our 1st trip there during the winter and hands down is the best place in Indianapolis to take your kids sledding! Not to mention without the leaves on and the snow on the ground you can see the hidden beauty deep in the woods. My heart belongs to Turkey Run State Park its where I grew up and learned to appreciate the conservation efforts started over a 100 years ago, but while we endure city life Fort Harrison will be my home away from home.
Cari Morales
Very beautiful park on a fall day. Went there with my fiance to take advantage of some warm weather in November and this place did not disappoint. There are packed trails and were marked beautifully. We say folks walking with dogs, pushing strollers and many who were riding bicycles. It has a little bit for EVERYONE.
M Doyle
Beautiful park and well maintained. Enjoy the variations of trails and ease of use. We've enjoyed it so much we've even purchased a year long pass.
Hannah Milano
We love Fort Harrison State Park! Took the littles to a naturalist chat about Bald Eagles where we learned all about that beautiful bird and the kiddos made a cute craft! Then we went on a long hike where we heard a wood thrush, found a cool mushroom, saw a lot of Daddy long leg spiders, and met some cool doggos. We ended our time by attending another naturalist chat, this one was about the beautiful ambassador wildlife who call the nature center home. The naturalist fed all the animals which the kids loved! The box turtle loved her blueberries and the red eared slider cleaned her plate as well. My favorite was the black rat snake, who happily scarfed down a baby rat for her meal! Amazing nature center and really cool naturalists!

A very beautiful and well maintained park. Great place to take photos, ride your bike or go for a walk! :)
Betsy Anders
The dog park requires membership (it's huge and looks amazing). I didn't know this and drove over 30 minutes to be disappointed. However, the state park has so much to offer and dogs are allowed on leash so we hiked, played in a creek and still had a splendid time. We even got to listen to a presentation on box turtles.
It's $7 for a day pass.
Jason Sappenfield
1st nice day in a while.... Long line to get in, but we all thought it was worth it! The dogs even found the last remaining snow in the park to eat and lay on at the end of the walk🤣🤣 We were all tired at the end of the day and really enjoyed our walk! …

I am visiting my cousin in Indianapolis and often hike at state parks back home in Long Island. I was so impressed with Fort Harrison State Park. The trails we walked, Fall Creek and Camp Creek were so beautiful. The challenge was perfect and I can't wait to hike on the Lawrence Creek trail next time I visit. I am posting some incredible views of the hike.
Stephanie Rose
We savor our time at this lovely park 🙌
We most recently enjoyed the Blues and Barbecue festival. Afterwards, we played in the creek.
You will not regret checking out this beautiful park
Sarah G.
We loved our 4 mile hike!! Visiting the museum and enjoying the wild life only 20 minutes from home. We brought our lunch and sat at the bench at the top of the sledding hill and went back into the trail. We seen a white tailed deer, snake, & tons of other little creatures.
Anne Perkins
Beautiful state park with a really nice paved walking trail for my dad to enjoy on his scooter. He's 94 & has hiked these trails even before it became a state park, but he can no longer walk long distances so the paved trail allows him to still enjoy a trip on a nature trail.
Luke Haviland
Fun little state park. Local residents need to be better about littering but it's still nice. I just moved to the area and Fort Harrison is only 10 minutes from my new place so it's the first park I've been to in Indiana.
Pick up your trash! Don't litter 🚯
JULIE JANZEN
A beautiful place to walk and do a little hiking. A lovely landscape for the whole family to enjoy including your pup.
Tyler Wardrop
Great place to take a hike, walk the dog, or just get some fresh air. Highly recommend this park to anyone in the Indy area.
The Rev
We enjoyed visiting this park and it's nice trails. There is a small Military Museum that is definitely worth checking out, and it is free to get in. They do rely on donations though so please be generous. You may even find an artifact on one of the trails. There is a nice lake and part of the trails follows a river.
Victoria Dodge
Fort Ben is a hidden jewel that I recently rediscovered with shaded, paved biking trails, hiking trails, mountain bike terrain and horseback riding. Great for families!
Florencia Cutrone
I came to Fort Harrison to get some time away from stress and it was so relaxing and therapeutic. I got fresh air, exercise, and it really is a gorgeous park. There were deer and very interesting plants growing. Definitely check it out if you want to go on a hike or even bring your kids to the saddle barn. Such a fun place to be.
Redd Lovely1
Small for a State Park with trails, museum, horseback riding and fishing. Not for serious fishermen though… there just seems to be a bunch of sunnies for the kids to catch. Do you know of a good fishing spot? I’m still looking. I enjoyed the programs offered by Friends of the park through my girls elementary school.
Emily Phelps
This place has huge beautiful woods and walking trails that seem to go forever sometimes. The duck pond and horse stables are my kid's favorite! The duck pond is a great place to fish with a nice spacious dock area. The horse stables are amazing, to say the least! Everyone is so nice and so kid friendly. My kids had a blast! They even offer pony rides for little ones, and my son was 2 yrs old at the time. Now, I'm one over protective mom. I let my kid's have fun and explore the world, but I'm not going to let them be involved in an activity if I feel like it's unsafe. So, you best believe I asked A LOT of questions and made sure the animals were very friendly. The staff was so kind and patient with us, took their time, and even allowed us to check everything out first. They were so awesome!! My son had the time of his life! It's just a few small laps around the stable area, but that was enough for a toddler. You should definitely have the little ones experience this! The lady who works there has control of the lead the entire time, so it's very safe, and the horse is a little pony and so so sweet and definitely gentle to kids. The staff were all very welcoming too and allowed me to be involved, which made me very even more comfortable. I was on one side and his big sister on the other, but he was all smiles! Very memorable times there! I've been attending this park since I was around.. I'd say probably 14 or 15 years old? Maybe even a little younger than that, and now I'm 30 years old.. so that should tell you right there how awesome that park is, lol. Go check it out; you won't regret it!!
Beatle B
Great spot for fishing! Was looking for a new place to go fishing and this place is awesome! It had a fun and peaceful atmosphere. The park is alot cleaner than other parks. The pond I was fishing at was very clean and few rocks so perfect for fishing. There was some fish biting but didn't catch anything. Other people were catching good sized trout. The hiking areas also look fun but I will have to go back for that later. This place is worth to check it out!
Mark Carpenter
Hard to believe this park is in a very urban area. It’s beautiful. Visited here at the end of summer and just loved it. I plan to come back at the end of October to see the changing leaves.
Note: the park hotel sponsors a very nice brunch on Sunday mornings.
Sonata Chaterji
Crowded and some littering but very nice trails and close to Indy (30 minutes or so). Barren trees in March but I imagine it'll be really pretty in Spring. Mix of asphalt and technical trails, replete with tree roots and stream side continuations. Pretty bridge to oversee the terrain. Forests being maintained and picnic tables far from the madding crowd. Smoking should be disallowed in these parks because some folks are pretty inconsiderate with their smoking behavior.
Siri Z
Park is big and beautiful. Good place for kids, family or dogs. They get busy on weekends. They charge $7 per car. Dog allow but need to have leash on.
David Estes
Great to have a state park so close to indy. Nice trails and playground for kids. Theres a cool area near the stables that are like daytime campsites great for enjoying the outdoors or doing parks on the air radio activations
Brooke Sanders
So relaxing and a great place to ride bikes. Petting the horses is fun too. Visitor center is very neat and the staff are super kind and helpful.
Matt
Nice park, downside it's traffic heavy.
Trenton Fye
Hurt myself on a log but that's my fault. the park was mostly clean. the line was long the entrance and fee was slightly unreasonable. BUT it did distract me from my terrible life so easily 5 stars
T Shep
What a gem in the rough. If you live in indy and need a bit of nature therapy go here. There is a fee to enter, but so worth it.
Vincent Burks
I was pretty impressed when I decided to find a place to break in my mountain bike. I did very little research on the trails available.
I biked to a trail that was a bike/hike trail that I didn't notice was one way...until I was respectfully informed by a rider going the opposite direction.
I had no idea Indianapolis had such trails and I'm from here! I had lots of fun pushing the limits of my bike and abilities. I think you will too.
Dr. Ivan Mez
great state park on the east side of indianapolis. several trails to walk.
playground
green areas for pictures or whatever you want to do
grills all around the park and shelters to rent.
Valerie Devereux
Great paths, clean restrooms and several play areas. It was a cold day, but beautiful time to spend with my family.
Jeffrey Jones
First time visiting Fort Harrison State Park for me. I never realized what a beautiful park this is right here so close to Downtown Indianapolis. Took a hike along the creek and was surprised by the fact there were actually some small hills right here in central Indiana. The trails were well maintained and clearly marked. Got to watch some people fishing while walking around the pond and out on the pier. Definitely a place to visit and will probably be full of color for the fall. Just remember there is an admission fee.
Jenny Simque
We lived near Ft Harrison for a little over a year and it was our favorite place to get outdoors. Absolutely lovely open grassy areas with shade trees, plenty of picnic areas, shelters & grills, a couple playground areas, some trails, a creek that is great for wading in at least a couple different spots, fishing pond, horses available for trail riding, paved walking/bike trail, sledding hill, historical buildings, restrooms.... and the staff do an outstanding job of keeping the grounds beautiful. No trash cans (as at most IN state parks), so be advised you will need to carry out your trash. All in all one of the very best things about living in Indianapolis (one of the others is the fabulous downtown original farmers' market;)).
Sharon Claassen
We visited for a short walk on the Tree Line trail, which is an easy walk. This was a lovely walk with a beautiful variety of wooded and prairie views. Trees are marked along the trail with markers that provide information about the trees. We saw a lot of butterflies and birds during our one hour walk. You could walk the trail quicker, but we stopped to read the markers and take pictures. We will definitely be back to check out the 20th Century War museum, which is near the visitor center. Be sure to visit the Visitor Center and see the displays of military, Native American life, and wildlife. It also has a counter to purchase T-shirts or hats. We look forward to return and walk more trails!
live long
They have a wide variety of trails (paved and not paved). The forest is beautiful and calm even in the winter
Brandon Joiner
Such a beautiful state park if I've ever seen one. The scenery and wildlife are in abundance and is always a great location to get away and enjoy peace and quite surroundings.
Nicky Lee
What a beautiful place for a peaceful walk/hike and be with nature. Love that there are paved and dirt trails.
Matt K
This is a really nice State Park convenient to folks living in Indianapolis. The grounds are surprisingly large with open spaces, a modern playground, great trails, paved roads/trails for cycling, rugged trails for hiking and a golf course. On the south side of the park are the horse stables offering trail rides for budding equestrians.
My favorite is to hike or walk up to the duck pond and do the loop that runs by the golf course on the East-northeast side of the park. I also enjoy the walk on the paved trail through the Walnut Grove on the west side of the park.
The park is at the end of the Fall Creek multi use trail. You can take the Fall Creek trail all the way from downtown either via the monon or pick up the trail near Riverside Park and take it by the State fairgrounds and all the way to fort ben for a lovely bike ride without ever riding on a road.
Akshay Dalvi
Such a wonderful place to visit near to the Indianapolis downtown. It is beautiful during the sunset time. Did see a deer while entering in the park.
Bibi Heredia
Great great hiking trails! Walked for an hour an 18 mins! Little bit muddy but great trail :)
Ren Jax
The Garrisons is a great space with a wonderful view. We were there for brunch with a large group.
Our arrival at Noon, however, didn't allow for us to take full advantage of all the delicious looking food served, since they began to shut things down around 2p. So, it's not a place for a quick meal. You should certainly have a few hours to spare to get the most out of what you pay for.
Yet, the breakfast was fresh, even at Noon. I had eggs, sausage patties, French toast with a nice maple syrup, home fries and fresh orange juice. After some good conversation, and a little more digestion, I went up for an afternoon nibble. (It's all you can eat, 18.99 for adults, 17.99 for seniors.) If you don't have a large appetite, you may be better served going somewhere else. But, if you have a few hours, and you're with a large group, there will be time to enjoy all the food that is offered.
I heard the seasoning didn't sit right with some of the older members of our group, bland/not enough seasoning, while other adults were fine.
The desserts were fantastic! (Love a good carrot cake!)

Worth every penny. I love being able to take a hour or two to get out of my busy schedule to spend some time in nature. This is truly one of my favorite park. There’s a lot of do here. I jog and bike here regularly. I love the ponds and the creek. Gotta check out the Walnut Gove!
Chase Harker
Great state park east of Indy. Good variety of trails, from flat paved ones to pretty rough terrain. I have trained here for years running cross country. They have cool events every once in a while also.
Justin Chow
This park is heavily trafficked on weekends. You'll run into many people walking dogs or mountain biking. If you want to get on a trail that avoids the bikers, head further into the park from the gate. Fall Creek trail is a classic Midwest woods hike that includes some views of water.
If you're arriving in the late morning on a weekend, you will contend for parking with other bikers and bikers.
Rena Hampton
Not alot to do here for little kids but it is a nicely maintained park. It was very hot the day we went so we ended up in the creek and it was a blast.
Tatyana Fedorikhina
Fairly crowded even on a Tuesday morning. People are not social distancing, so I had to wear a mask. Non paved trails are not marked.
Vince Semona
Growing up in the area it is great to see this area reused. And the history they have preserved here is well worth the time to walk through.
Ashley Hayhurst
I’ve loved coming here ever since I moved to Indy. I love the trails, ponds, tracks, and playgrounds. I love taking my dog here and always clean up after him. SOME people do not clean up after their pets and/or leave the bag there. Since there are no trash cans around, you do have to take your trash with you!
Rollow Timmossie
Had a great time kicking it with family. Covid pushed getting together back for a few years, but we are back now.

The Indy Salt Cave was our first trip of such.
The environment and staff were amazing.
We did a 45 minute salt cave session, and found d it to be very therapeutic.
Sinus pressure relieved and ease of respitory was astounding.
We look forward to many more trips.
Highly recommend
Ann Brown
Vacation rentals with grills, military museum, restaurant, golf, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and biking trails. Playgrounds and picnic tables/ coves for the family. Hidden gem. Great park for dog walking, $7 per car admission fee.
Christine Lu
Nice state park close to town and offer some nice trails. $7/car entrance or $50/annual state pass. Use to enjoy sighting wild mushrooms here in the park but finding less and less of them.
Vipul Patel
Nice park to to get family outing. It has everything for everyone. Horse stable barns and horse riding trails, nice spots for barbecue and picnic, good scenic trials, biking trails, playground and lot more. Easily accessible from Indianapolis is added benefit. Great spot for good family and friend outing over weekend.
GSTonyTseng
Love this area, lake, grassland, and river, excellent place for jogging and biking.
Cash Bouvier
Very big park that has so many things to do. There are paths through the woods if you want a scenic hike. There are paths in the open if you want fresh air. And there are playgrounds so kids have something to do. You make the park whatever you want to make it.
E Todd Fowler
Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park and hotel is outstanding. The staff is attentive and the grounds are well maintained. The rooms are spacious and clean. Conveniently located. I would stay here again.
Norma Pritchard
Loved it.
Horse back riding was awesome. We must do this again
Karen Morris
This park is one of the gems on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Family and dog friendly. Clean restrooms. Great hiking trails, paved pathways for running or walking, several playground areas, the list of great things is endless!!
Cassie Crawford
We love fort harrison state park! We can go hiking, have a picnic in the park, go horseback riding and explore the nature museum. Our kids love coming here :)
Swathi Bangaru
One of my favorite places with different loops to hike. scenic fresh and healthy. So close to the nature full of trees and lovely creeks only few minute away from rush Indianapolis.
Elaine Guinn
Great park! We have an annual pass and visit regularly. Amazing outdoor playspace that surpasses any others due to the natural setting. Hiking trails, horses, and much more going on at this park. Plenty of picnic tables and parking spaces. Mostly ADA accessible. Some of the play equipment does not have Ramps and I haven't seen full harness swings for kiddos with special needs (so far...I'll update if do). Overall great park!
Heather Bowlin
Very pretty state park with lots of great hiking/biking trails, bird watching, playground areas, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and rentable outdoor shelters. You can also enjoy some fishing, horseback riding and you can even take a dip or canoe down Fall Creek!!!
Shad Schultz
Great trails. Great wooded trail near visitor center. Watch your step though near the old foundations of buildings. I nearly broke my ankle stepping in a buried cinder block covered by leaves.
Jordan Smith
Always find lots of mushrooms and animals to take pics of. But i really hate the cycling on the trails. They try to run you over and are distructive of the paths and plants.
Jessica DeGroff
Perfect place for a quick hike with your dog(s). Can be pretty busy on the weekends which makes for a long wait to get in. I recommend getting there before 10am.
Darlene Tolley
Nice trails. Great location. Scheduled horseback rides for a fee. Bbq and fire pits available. Duck pond.
JR Anderson
I hike two laps of the Fall Creek Trail with my Lab daily. We'll maintained trial. Super easy trail for conditioning or training. Some scenic points but most of all it has very light traffic during the week. I can't say that for the weekend.
Kayla Sager
Had a wonderful Memorial Day 🇺🇸 horseback riding in Fort Harrison State Park with my family. Trails are very pretty, but many uphills and downs hills so if your nervous try a flat trail first.
The owner was super nice and so was the staff. Highly recommend and it’s all shaded.
Jennifer Baughman
Great state park within the Indianapolis city limits. It is dog friendly. The one little downside is because of location it is a little crowded. But it s a great place for a hike.
Rohit Akhauri
Fort Harrison, also known as called Fort Ben, is a state park located in Lawrence, IN. Its pretty close to Fishers,Carmel Noblesville and Indianapolis. The park features a former Citizen's Military Training Camp, Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and World War II prisoner of war camp. There are also picnicking and walking/jogging trails. ITs amazing to see some beautiful elevation in otherwise flat Indiana. There are creeks and ponds in park.
Gold course attracts golfers here. Its a must visit if you like hiking walking or biking.
One day entry costs $7 if you don’t have membership.
Ernie Prater
Perfect birthday present from my daughter on a beautiful day. The colorful leaves were at peak in the virgin forest!
Layla Talbert
We love our state park! Beautiful trails and my daughter loves the main playground area.
Lindy Pruett
The park is a GREAT place for everyone!
Took my pup for a walk.
The place was full and it appeared everyone was having fun
John Karraker
Awesome for local adventuring. Neat wooded trails, lovely little lakes and ponds. We need to go here more often.
LaShaundra Christmas
Beautiful park with nice trails and lovely scenery. I took this picture in the fall and enjoyed the nice cool weather and exercise. Entrance is $5 for a daily admittance or a yearly membership is around $50...well worth it. We have had family picnics here, leisurely walks along the trails with beautiful ponds to look at or nice hikes for more cardio exercise that have plenty of hills and places to explore within the woods.
Joseph Keller
This place while small is great for getting out and just exploring. Good trails to hike and all. A couple of the bike trails are closed till next month but that made sense. Only $7.00 to enter the park. If you have a pet they're allowed but must be on a leash at all times. Really a nice state park.
Chris L
Love this State Park! Lots of wonderful trails. Two great playgrounds for kids to swing and slide. Beautiful day, clean and people lined up to get in as we were leaving.
Lizett I Woodward
This is an amazing park to spend the day at! I went there with my husband and puppy, my puppy loved the trials even if he got tired lol, we went on a weekday so it wasn't crowed, we enjoy the peaceful of this please and went home happy.
Chris Johnson
It's nice to see nature so close to the city! I highly recommend visiting if you want some fresh air and a moment away from the office.
Mohamad Almakky
Absolutely wonderful place to go to with family and friends. So clean and peaceful and HUGE! So many places that you could go to here and it has a nice trail that I didn’t have the chance to check out yet, but maybe in my next visit.
Sarah W.
Went here first of November and I supposed it's out of season that's why the gate is free. It's a nice park. There are dirt trail for hiking and also a paved trail. We also went to the river and it's just calming, I'd spend my day there. We'd like to go back and visit it again.
Demetrio Estrada
Very good Park. Never been there before. I just run the Fort Ben half marathon there.
Alex Walden
Went out to Fort Ben with the family (and dog) to play in the creek and have a little cook out. As always, everything was clean, green, and beautiful. Always a pleasure to visit Fort Ben!
Mark Slone
Nice urban state park, small ponds, trails for hiking & biking. No campground.
Jessica Porter
Fort Harrison State Park is a jewel of a park. Always clean and well kept. The forest itself is beautiful and wild! I highly recommend visiting!
Oscar Oreffechi
Excellent place to connect with nature, learn more about the military history of the country.
Patrick Dillon
This place has definitely changed since it was a military base, so much has been added,in which I dont recognize it anymore. But keep in mind, change is good!
Debbie Balk
Beautiful park. My grandson likes to ride the ponies. It is only $3 for 3 laps.
William Cassell
Played the exceptionally fine golf course at the fort. Very gorgeous piece of property fine layout it was a little dry but that's been the weather greens were firm but okay. One problem there was was it was in the 90s and there wasn't any refreshments. They don't let you take coolers on the course. I didn't see a beverage wagon all day. There were some water coolers available between certain holes. Very stingy on the sandbunker brakes sometimes you had to walk 50 ft to 100 ft just to get a rake.
Really always enjoy the golf course it's demanding but it's easy to score very fair. Will definitely go back.

Christy Byers
Great place for sledding. It has a very large hill at the back of the park that was perfect for sledding. It has trails and pavilions throughout the park as well. I've never been there before and only went for the sledding, but it looks like a good place to have a half day adventure. It cost $7/ carload, but there are passes available for locals. It has sizable parking lots and plenty of space to spread out too.
Danielle Fuller
We LOVE this park. Between horseback riding, the trails, races, the pond, and the sledding hill....it is totally worth it!
John Dingledine
Walking trails and bicycle trails. Bicycle trails are paved and used more for the easy Leisure ride.
Camping and fishing if you prefer. A great Pete Dye golf course on the property with Restaurant
Evan Chivington
Great hiking and mountain biking trails. Also good sledding hill when it snows.
Forrest Brem
Great park for accessibility and bringing the family. They also have lots of nice programming and a hard-working staff. Love that I live so close!
Paul Spicer
Hotel had construction happening at the time of my stay, wasn't too disturbing. Hotel was clean and quiet. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms had everything you needed. Was perfect for what I required.
Dawn Morris
Good trails for a more rugged experience. A bit more crowded than some other state parks with it's proximity to Indianapolis.
TAMRA GEBHART
The park was actually nice a lot of people grilling out walking jogging we went to fish and a lot of people were fishing had a nice day
Noel Howell
Beautiful walking trails. Lake for fishing and connection to the fall creek parkway trail for biking to other places.
Erin Teague
Go to the stables for the pony rides! Ask for Trigger, he was the softest and sweetest. $3 cash for 3 laps with a parent holding the lead. It was great. Can't do the trail rides yet, our daughter is too young.
The 20th century war museum is staffed by volunteers and we enjoyed the walk through the history. They have top rate artifacts and a simulation of a trench from WWI.
Carla Garza
We love this park there are a lot of hiking trails and in the summer you can swim in the river
Lee Fleming
Amazing, I'm coming from Texas for work. Great views, awesome trails off to the side. 100% will return.
David Welsh
The trails we're well kept. The hiking pleasant. The park map was a little hard to understand at first

This is a great spot for all types of outdoor activities. I love road cycling here and it is great for mountain biking, running, hiking, taking people for a walk that need a wheel chair or have walking problems, and letting kids play on a playground. This place has great trails for all these sports and has great scenery.
Jessica Cockrum
A lovely little park in the midst of suburban Indianapolis. There are several play structures throughout for the kids to enjoy, beautiful scenery, shelters and picnic tables, and walking/biking paths and trails. There is also a sledding hill. Save yourself money over the long run and buy a year long pass. It will get you into all of Indiana's state parks, including Brown County (another favorite).
Jonathan Gutierrez
Really good park and it's reasonably priced. The only thing that I didn't like was the trails could be a little bit more clearly marked. It's hard to get completely lost but it's not difficult to get turned around a short hike can turn into a long one.
Robert Lusch
This place is a real gem! Barry and Steve were always ready and willing to answer questions. The breakfast was great, hot food and normal breakfast items. Love staying here. Second year there for race weekend, already booked for next year!
Westin Williamson
Such a great park for spending quality time outdoors.
Joni Heredia
Beautiful trails, fishing pond, bike paths, shelters for events, horse back riding, and everything you could want!
Kurt Beard
Great park near Indianapolis. They have some great ponds, camp sites, and many nice trails.
We went for the annual outdoor and were able to enjoy archery, shotgun shooting, fishing and more.
Shane H
Great trails and the little notes on identifying leaves and trees around the park are fun to learn about
Scott Sacek
Beautiful land, nice shelters, great place for kids and dogs. Bathrooms were nice and cleand.
Hannah Pruett
The trails are really nice to hike and are marked so you know where you are going!
The Dragonlord
During the spring and summer, it's a great place to have a picnic.
Jeremy
Great for a quick hike. Park entrance lines can be up to an hour long though.
Paul Zielinski

Iris Vogel-Eskew
Great state park with beautiful trails offers a green escape in the middle of the city.
Matthew Martin
Fun family oriented park. Great weather today brought a lot of folks out. Nice park for a day trip
T Lorenzo
Beautiful park. Alot of space. Picnic areas. Lakes. Hiking. Alot of sun and shade areas. Good to go by yourself, family, and friends! Clean restrooms. We will continue to visit this state park.
Summer Elmore
I love this park; wooded dirt trails, paved trails, mountain bike trails, ponds, streams, playgrounds, prairies,... I could continue. But the best part is how close and accessible this gem is.
Craig Johnson
good family park. Love this park. Good place to go for a walk.
G. Arroyo
I love this place. Is a escape from the city. Lots of trails to walk.
Katy Nay
Very busy on the day i went. It took 30 min to get into the pay gate which usually there may be one or two cars. But this was a very nice day and with so many things closed or limited with covid restictions it made sense, just surprised.
Nicely kept park, love coming here with my friends each fall, guess everyone else did too.
Nicola Abney
It’s a great place, close and convenient. My only complaint is- going here to enjoy the outdoors, the sounds of nature, etc. is sometimes hard due to the inconsiderate ones who blast their music as if they are the only ones around. Although I do not want DNR down everyone’s throat, I do think DNR could control these type of issues by simply monitoring and addressing the situation.
dharil patel
Good outing place. Family friendly. I would love to see how it looks on the winters.
Marcia Bortoletto
I could not believe that so close to Indy would find this piece of nature! Nice bike trails, nice areas for picnic, nice lakes.
Debra Newman
Very beautiful! Lots to do. Great place for family gatherings or birthdays.
Jonathan Rogers
Fantastic state park. Great hiking, open areas for the kids to play, and good playgrounds. Usually busy on the weekends, fairly quiet on the week days
Di Zhang
Very nice place for hiking. Fresh air from the woods cleaned our brains.
Jacki Barnhouse
It's a beautiful place to hike. We saw 26 deer on our trail in just one day!
Chris M
Nice quiet park with lots of trails for walking or biking. Also has playground areas for the kids.
Sarah Beth Pugh
Beautiful little Park tucked away inside of Indianapolis. I took some family photos there and would definitely recommend going back.
Aaron Ettner
I loved hunting if these mushrooms, can't wait till next year.
Jocelyn D
Great park! Lots of trails for both hikers and bikers!
Mike Hindson-Evans
Simply stunning. The Fort Harrison Inn was our base for the Indy-500 weekend in late May 2022. The hotel is advertised as a three-star establishment and this seems fair.
Stacy Corwin
A great place to spend some time in nature, conveniently located in Indianapolis. It's our favorite place to "get away" when we don't have time to go any farther. The trails are fairly clear and the scenery is beautiful.
Cameron Weage
This was our first stay here. Our church went with Fort Harrison State park inn for our annual couple's retreat. The level of cleanliness, service, food, and size/comfort of the rooms was top tier! Such a great relaxing weekend. Do yourself a favor and stay here!
Kristin Bodnar
Love!!!! Great hiking, rinse your toes in the creek and eat lunch. Beautiful!
Cathy J
Great place to walk, a lot of trash everywhere though. Next time, I'll bring a trash bag and pick it up myself. Other than that, a wonderful place.
Nina Herald
Beautiful place to go lots of wildlife and trials to explore
V Camacho
We love going here!! Nice trails and green areas for hiking/walking/biking!

Beautiful place to relax!!
I have traveled many miles to get to spots resembling Fort Ben.
Now I have a spot close to home.
Kate Stephens
Love this park. Plenty of bike trail. Wonderful like walk. My fiend took her son the the nice hilly playground. Hats down. Spacious , organized park!
Whitney Trimble
Fort Harrison is so beautiful and peaceful. Took the walk out to Duck Pond. We weren't able to fish as planned but the wildlife surrounding it was well worth the walk.
Lexi Jones
Very beautiful park. Lots of places to relax and trails to walk.
Superstar Galactica
Great scenery and great trails. The dirt trail is about 4 miles and if you do all the paved trails it's another 4. Start from the elementary school, it's right by a trailhead and you don't have to pay to get into the park.
tromboneman83
Excellent hiking. When in Indianapolis a gotta go place to get fresh tree air.
Mabel Mathers
Lots of scary kids everywhere but I can swim, roll in river critter poop, and run for days.
Havona Perry
Horseback guided tour was great! Especially with the family,I recommend!
Nelson Ortiz
Peaceful clean horseback riding haven't tried it yet will soon it would be nice if they had a little swimming area but the water is so dirty looking the park is nice great place to enjoy a family day and nature
Mark Wells
What a great morning. My boys and I went fishing at the Delaware lake and had a great time.
Josh Lucas
Nice bike trails, but too many unaware hikers and people sitting on fast flowing sections and jumps on trails. Why!? Someone's going to get hurt. Hikers should stay on the hiking trails on the other side of the park. About gave 3 out of 5 people heart attacks today when i came up on them.
Kimirly Black
Great trails, wonderful volunteers at the Visitor Center. Got my 2020 parking pass and plan on being there weekly!
Mark Abney
Great place to fish, Duck pond that is!!! You have to travel away from all the disrespectful Mexicans who use this place as if it’s their back yard drinking loud obnoxious music and who like to gawk at your wife and your daughters (regardless of the children’s age)
Joshua Kaminski
Massive area with trails, rolling hills woods, and picnic areas. Impressed!
Craig Pederson
Came to fort Harrison most recently on October 21st. Leaves were falling but there was not a lot of fall colors so I didn’t take any pictures. Still loved the hiking did the fall creek and Lawrence creek trails. That is the best part of the park is that they have enough trails that you will have more to do the next time you come instead of finishing it all in one day.
james Ganey
Me and a couple buddies took the Lawrence Creek trail for a quick afternoon hike. It was very well maintained, no litter, clearly marked, and well-packed under-foot. It was a fantastic little hike, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a quick outing to work up a sweat!
Lawrence Bunting
A very plesant place to walk and enjoy the beautiful flowers. Nice lake also.
Daniel Hernandez
Super peaceful and good for fishing my son had A-blast!
Jake Crippin
This is s good place for biking or walking. There are paved trails everywhere.
Kurt Kriese
Ft. Harrison Park is a really great park for walking and bicycle riding. The trails are well marked. There are several ponds for wildlife watching.
D Derrer
Nice mountain biking trails in a location convenient to Indy.
Hoosier Jonny
What a pleasant park to go to and enjoy the day. I quite enjoy spending time with family out there for the day and enjoying the beauty of it. The history too is a great perk.
Kevin DeJarnette
Our dog loves the park! This was her first trip!
Caty Green
Fort Harrison has become one of our favorite winter spots. A short drive from both of our neighborhoods, it’s a really nice way to disconnect and spend a little time in nature.
Krissie White
Fun, affordable, and family friendly hidden right in the middle of the city!
Mindy Wilkinson
For being in the city this park was super clean I hardly found or seen any Trash along the trails cudos2u Fort Harrison State Park. And look free walnuts.

S T L A Vlogs
We loved it here ♡ first state park of the summer!
Betty Wendland
We really enjoy coming to Fort Harrison State park. They have lovey trails for hiking and great picnic areas near the playground.

Shelley Hanmo Qian
Definitely a beautiful place to hike and have a walk!

golf.

Great place to go hiking for easy to moderate trails. Very clean and scenic.
Dr. Aaron Campbell
Had a great time training with my Indiana Guard Reserve battle buddies!
Dan K
Did a socialist distant Halloween party at a pavilion here and it was great!
Anne Hudson
I love a state park so close. It can be very busy because there are few parks on that side of town. It's beautiful! Right now, quite a few trails are closed, dramatically limiting options. Fun horse riding.
Catherine Rossi
We walk and hike here frequently! Love the park❤
Elkyn Beltre
Great state park! I lived in the Lawrence area for two years and this park was walking distance for us. We would go there at least once a week. The walking/running/biking trails area great. We love the Duck Pond trail. I would highly recommend.
Mary B.
Long lines to get into park. If you want to participate in the wild flower or bird walks or any event here, be sure to allow at least 30 minutes to wait in line at the gate. Very disappointed I missed my event. I think people ask all their questions at the gate rather than the visitors center. I thought the trails and maps needs to be marked better. I was a bit lost last time I walked on the trails. think they are very underfunded and understaffed. We would have more services and oversight over the horse back riding if the parks in Indiana were given more funding. State parks needs more funding to improve.
Moncef Laouini
Love this place. Its huge and maintained so well. Im there all the time by myself or with the kids. Great place to clear your head.
Diana Mo-Garcia
My kids love this park, i just wish people would do the right thing and pick after themselves
Brandon Zimmerman
Wonderful trails and a great hiking experience!
jacob moss
Good park. I went on a day that was free to get in, but it is affordable when you have to pay. The park is well maintained and has good picnic areas. My one qualm is that I would like more signage about the different hiking trails. But maybe that is just me
Eva Rodriguez
Love it!..i just went to swim on the river with my kids...what i didnt like is that many visitors are littering....we picked up the much trash that we can ....and we didnt find a trash can no where..so we put what we collected at the restroom trash can inside
Phil McNelly
Beautiful park to visit in the fall. My family and I had a great time hiking the Fall Creek trail and the kids love the large playground area. There are multiple locations for picnicking, either at the many provided tables, or with a blanket on the grass. If you live in Indy or are visiting, I would highly recommend this park!
Christopher Herbert
I'm a runner and I've been coming to this State Park for years and I love it. Always clean and well maintained. Bring your family, walk, run or ride a bicycle it doesn't matter because it will be a wonderful experience. 🙂 …
Liony Ngalusi
It's quite nice, there are many bbq grills with the park benchs everywhere. It's a great place to walk your dog/ biking/ wander around the lake, especially if you're pregnant.
Laura Olivo
My husband, teacup yorkie and I love to hike here! There is a large asphalt loop we like to do that is about 3 miles plus.
Yvonne Spiller
A great place to bring the Family! There is a Per Car Fee for entry $7/$9. ENJOY!
Adam Hoffer
We're always happy to walk the trails, and there hasn't been a time where we haven't seen great wildlife.
B E
Miles of trails within the city limits, love Fort Ben. Don't ride in the mud!
Titto Augustine
Lots of parking space, beautiful park, however lots of improvements going on and multiple areas/trails were closed. Check about your trail (if particular) before going.
Bruce
Nice long multi mile walking and biking paths. Locals brought floats for little ones to swim and float in nice shallow wide river flowing through. Popular but huge so it didn't feel crowded. Good for picnics and fishing. There was a small entrance fee per car to enter park.
Tajuan Johnson
Nice local park with plenty of space and things to do.
Delores Dodie Chatmon Clark
We went there to inquire about horseback riding. They only do trail riding, 30min. $20, 1hour $30. We plan to go this Friday, for 1 hour. We are city people the drive in the park was so refreshing and very quite. We did not ride, but we enjoyed cruising through the park. The had picnic tables through out the park.
Izzy Indahizzy
Nice park, great for biking and running. There are both paved and unpaved trails but if you're wanting to get lost in the woods unpaved is the way to go. The fishing pond is right by the parking area and along the creek there are several spots the kids can get in the water and play especially when it's warmer. They also have an enormous sledding hill. Pretty sure they even have a golf course and camping as well. Not the biggest park but it has a lot to offer and is the closest state park to downtown Indianapolis. Buy your park pass and get out and enjoy nature!!
Amy Callahan
Beautiful state park near Indianapolis, and a convenient drive near the interstate.
Well maintained trails! And when the weather is really nice, I prefer to go during a weekday when there are less people.
Next year, I'll look into getting a pass for the dog park.
Whitney Bradshaw
Love this park in all seasons. In the summer, the creek is super crowded, but the wildflowers at the black walnut Grove are peaceful and beautiful. Paths are well-maintained, and there are some really excellent hiking and biking paths. Love taking the dog here!
Mark Thomas
A great place to visit with friends for a big picnic.
M Riley
Fort Ben has been a go-to for hiking and trail runs for years, alone or with kiddos. Nice trails for varied abilities, including several paved options. Views from woods to open grass to creeks and hills. Horses to ride or for little ones to see. Several play areas. Many picnic table/shelter options. Big enough to find some quiet space, even on busy days. Multiple bathrooms. Be aware, all trash must be carried out- no on-site cans.
Ross Barclay
One if my favorite courses in the city. Very challenging, great tee options. Great pricing for military. Must see
Bryant Eismeier
Really nice park. They have good hiking trails with a nice couple of playgrounds. There are accessible trails as well as more difficult for the adventurous types.
Holly Shipley
Lots of trails to choose from. It's nice to have a place like this to escape to in the greater Indianapolis area.
Chris Bering
Nice trails. Great scenery.
Christopher Taitt
We had a great time with our labrador puppy. She had all the room to swim and Explore. The park is very well maintained and perfect for dog lovers of all types. I look forward to spending time out at the park this summer. Great family outdoors in Indiana.
Corey Trojanowski
Great hiking trails for a family. It was our first time hiking here and look forward to future hikes!
delayna Lamoureaux

Cameron Robbins
Very cool place! So many trails and nice people!
Dylan St. Clair
A great park for families, hikers, outdoor lovers, and events.
Marzetta Golden
Didn't know this park had so much history...awesome place to fish and just relax
marie dishman
Beautiful park. We rented a shelter & it was absolutely perfect! The bathrooms were clean. The playground only consisted of 2 swings & nothing else but not a big deal, the kids enjoyed exploring & running around.
Tracey Cook
Very nice visit. Some areas were closed for construction or improvements. The playground was perfect for my granddaughter. Very clean! Even the restrooms were immaculate.
James Frame
Great challenge, tough course, I made par on 18th one time 430 yards dogleg left, drive 3wood 10yrds above pin 2 putts, always remember that one.
Jason Keasey
Great place to get away while still on the city. Can get crowded on nice weekends but plenty of room for all.
E Nancy Dunlap
Had my Women's American Legion Christmas party & meeting today.
James Bowles
Nice walking trails and picnic areas with restrooms and other facilities. A nice place to walk the dog and enjoy nature.
Rob Flask
Wonderful place for a hike/walk with the dogs
Wendy Russo
Great local getaway for walking your dogs, picnicking, bicycling, or fishing!
jenny wuchner
This is a beautiful state park. It is also a very busy place. Lots of people getting their Saturday morning stroll on. There is lots to see and places to just chill. There is a huge hill if you like to sled in the winter. We lime to stay at the inn. It is quiet and the staff are friendly.
Amanda Ely Pedigo
This place is absolutely beautiful. Plenty of places to walk, bike, fish, play, and take photo opts. We went to have a pick nick. We found a few playgrounds to choose from. We also found dozens tables both in the shade and sun, as well as shelters with BBQs. All in all I think it was a fun afternoon. I would plan to spend the day though. I'm not use to paying to enter parks in your city. It was one of the few free things you could do. I guess around here you are going to pay no matter what you do. At least with this park.
Aaron S
Really nice. Not crowded. The trails were clean of debris. The shelters were not strewn with garbage or the smell of alcohol. The only complaint is the cost, at $7. Regardless, it is a decent park and close to the city. Enjoy it if you can.
Carlos Araujo
Lovely State park. Nice trails. Cannot wait for the trees to have leaves and come back.
Kevin Monaghan
Great hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate. $7/car to enter for the day. The restrooms are open and fairly clean. The have picnic tables throughout the part along with charcoal grills. The only thing that was missing were trash cans. We hiked for 5 hours and never saw one trash can.
Joy Hughes-White
They have horse trails and I LOVE horses
King Zakyu
We visited this place in September. Very nice people here, we came for the horse riding experience. As others have pointed out: it IS just basically sitting on a horse while it walks the path. That doesn't diminish from the experience I don't think, because that's what they tell you it is. Don't expect to have freedom with their horses. It isn't your pet.
We had lots of fun here, and it was an extremely pleasant day. Kudos to the whole team at this place!
Chris Kelly
Food and staff are fantastic! The best fried chicken around. If you haven't been here, you're missing out on a great experience.
Olga Cansino
nice trails, not crowded
Jason Garcia
Beautiful park with a lot of things to do, walk, run, bike, and play.
Jenn S
We love Ft Ben. The trails are great for beginner and intermediate hiking, the little ones will love the playgrounds and sledding hill. Our crew ranges from 8-60 years old, and we all enjoy it each time we visit.
karen mcmillen
Went for concert but it had been canceled due to rain.
Melody Tharpe
Great place to walk and unwind. Early mornings very low traffic, you can feel all alone. The sounds of nature greet you. Just stay quiet for a few minutes.
kristann Wood
My favorite park trails are awe some family friendly clean and quite
Aubrey Kearney
Excellent park with so many trails to explore.
Mail Delivery Subsystem
I have been going to For Harrison for years. This place has pretty large jogging trails and beautiful views. It is a great choice for family and special occasion photographs. It is also the perfect place for a picnic, dog walking and a nice place for children to play. There is a ton of parking in various parts if the park. There are creeks off some if the trails where many people let their dogs play. If you go often, it is very worth purchasing a yearly park pass, which also does work for the other state parks such as Eagle Creek and others. If I remember correctly, they are around $35-$40 a year.
Thabigragu
My son loves this park. Lots of creeks to stomp in and good playgrounds to play on. He especially loves the pony rides that they offer at the horse barn!
Amadeus Wagner
Nice beautiful peaceful place. Very inexpensive and sometimes even free. Everyone here is VERY nice. There are a TON of playgrounds throughout the park and even horses! The trails are quite amazing too, and there isn't very many people at this park either. Highly recommend, this has always been my favorite park!
Matthew Wilson
Long trails and a large hill for sledding, limited bird population which was quite surprising for a park of that size. Very large areas throughout to enjoy, nice kids area with a slide built into a hill. Great location for taking your family or for an enjoyable walk, run, or bike.
Stacy Counterman
Beautifully maintained park! The ranger that we chatted with was super friendly! We enjoyed our hike with our dog and loved getting to stop midway to have a lunch at once of their picnic benches!
Highly recommend going for a scenic outing!
Elizabeth Rice
I'd love to see more investment into trail maintenance and building. In such a wet location it can take a lot of work to maintain hiking trails!
Chris Delk
Very nice park. Surprisingly quiet for the proximity to the city. Well maintained trails and facilities with plenty of picnic spots.
FELISIA WOLFORK
My grandson plays football there it's always a very clean place.
Ronnie Pruitt
A hidden gem of Indianapolis for sure. Lots to do and always fun.
Doug Choban
Finally made it to the 20th Century military museum. Lots of interesting stuff covering wars of the 1900s. I got there kind of late so I wasn’t able to study everything. I’ll have to go back when I have more time. They are open til 6 on Saturday and Sunday. The Horse barn is right across the street. They have a couple adult ride options and kiddie rides.
Emeandor “RAS” Gaming
Wanted to come here for a photo shoot but it was rainy (not the parks fault lol) but the bars I did see were nice. I didn't know we had this much beauty this close to me in lawrence. Will go again when it finally stops raining.
Christian Terrones
Such a nice secluded spot to picnic, swing, walk, and a huge hill to roll down. Definitely somewhere to relax and detach from the city.
vincent wilson
Great place to take a walk. Peaceful and pleasant place to escape from the regular street life.
Mike Dukehart, II
Not the most exciting state park but still really good. Several great events throughout the year. Sledding hill in winter. A good paved trail for all those times that you need the exercise but not the mud of weather hiking.
Brooke Ellen Freeman
It's great having an easily accessible State Park pretty much in our backyard. We love the hiking trails and our son loves the playground. My husband and son plan to go fishing there soon, great stocked pond. We also love the horses! I think a guided horseback ride is on the agenda for this summer as well.
tanya fox-bleiler
Such a lovely surprise! A well maintained, enjoyable little gem in Indianapolis! Trails were well marked, offered a varied terrain, and not overly busy. The picnic areas, playgrounds, and facilities were plentiful. I can’t wait to return!!
Tyrone White
Blues & BBQ was nice today. Other times I've been at this park I've enjoyed horseback riding on the park horse trails... very nice thing to do with loved ones...
BRAD SMITH
Beautiful place to walk trails
Josh Taylor
Harrison state bark has a lot of bikin/walking trails a couple playground areas and some decent small bodys of water. Cool little escape for half a day
Pamela Murillo
Ft. Harrison is one of our favorite outdoor places to go as a family. There is fishing, trails, creek stomping/swimming, and more. Plus its close to us. Buying an annual pass saves you money if you are going to head there more than 7 times this year ($50 annual, $7/car/visit). We are even excited about the sledding hill this winter (but can wait for snow)!
Dan MacLeod
It's amazing they managed to fit several forested, multi-mile trails in such a small space. The park is beautiful, and while it can be crowded at times, that is only because it's so hard to find a gem like this close to an urban center. The only knock I have is that trash cans can be hard to come by, so please pack out your trash.
Christy Scroggins
Awesome park. Love the museum. Went to the nature center spoke naturalist D.A. he was very helpful and knowledgeable. He took the time to give my family a private tour of the center and answered all our questions about the wildlife. It was an awesome experience.
Iwona J Rogers
Right at our doorstep, this is one of our favorite places to visit when we don't want to take a long road trip. Trails, picnic areas, lovely place with lovely folks and an abundance of nature to keep you satisfied.
Rachel Lewis
Sometimes I need a break from my job when working out in the community. Going here and just sitting and breathing in fresh air. Is what I am needing. I have a annual pass and I recommend getting one of those also!
Evan Burton
Awesome park has gotten better over the years
Jessica Miller
This lovely park has different kinds of trails and ways to be with nature, depending on your abilities and mood. Paved and unpaved, flat or very hilly, great for strollers or wheelchairs, running, hiking or mountain biking. Some trails take you right up to the river where my daughter likes to hunt for shells. A smaller creek is great for creek stomping. We've fished at the pond, enjoyed picnics with bathrooms and picnic tables, played at a neat playground structure, and you can go house back riding, too.
Heather Berry
Nice park to walk around. Good place to let your kids run loose and enjoy the outdoors. It has several play grounds and an awesome sledding hill. Someday I want to head out there when we have a big snowstorm and take advantage of it.
Francis Gay
My son and I very much enjoyed our trip at Ft Harrison State Park. There was lots to do. It is hard to believe that this is here so close to a large metropolitan area. Since it was a free admission it was extremely crowded. The bikes on the trails have no regard to pedestrians. We had to jump off the trail multiple times. Otherwise it was beautiful,
Van Val
Enjoyed the walking trails and paved loop. The paved loop has a lane for pedestrians and a lane for cyclists, but it's hard to tell which is which because the markings are very faded.
The main lake is small but scenic with fishing possible and there are lots of places to wade in the creek.
Bliss Young
This is a beautiful state park a short drive from most of Indy. The trails aren't super long, with the longest being 4mi and most being less than 2mi. But it is a wonderful escape from the concrete and there are definitely places that let you forget you're in the middle of the city!
There are restrooms and play areas, as well as a stable for horseback riding and biking trails.
Christian Bradley
Considering its location, this is a phenomenal state park. It's like a tiny pocket of nature in Indianapolis. There are several trails, each of them entertaining in their own way.
I heartily recommend this park for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
Garrett Morgan
Gorgeous trails, beautiful scenery, and peaceful serenity. If you are looking for a place to run, bike, hike, walk, picknick, or just take in the beauty of nature, this is the place to go. There is a nice mix of paved and dirt trails that largely go through the beautiful woods and along the river. The entrance fees are a bit high but it is totally worth it. This is such a nice park with easy access from the Fall Creek area as well as the city of Indianapolis. If I could rate this a 6 out of 5, I would. :)
regina jorgensen
The musical swings are not in the park. They are free. There is also live music in the evening on the weekends. If you love to swing check them out.
Aaron Reed
Trails were clean. Trails didn't have many markings for what trail your on.
Richard Duncan
Lovely place to spend a sunny day with the kids.
Andrea Harrell
This place is clean, well maintained, and peaceful. I always feel safe here and appreciate the year round access to toilets and sinks. This is an excellent place to ride my bike and the staff is always friendly. I've been coming here my whole life and this place helps me stay sane.
William Yater
Walked on the .25 mile track opposite Ivy Tech. Nice track, smooth and paved, no real potholes. Not terribly scenic, especially on a Sunday afternoon.
RESONANT TONES
Beautiful park in the heart of the metropolitan area! It's located at the old Army post (Fort Benjamin Harrison) which is no longer a base. Though the reserves and the military finance still have a presence. The State Park is usually very clean with multiple trails for walking. No vehicle traffic allowed on the trails either. They also maintain a stable with horses for horseback riding and training. There is a golf resort next to the park with a great restaurant that has fabulous food and their Sunday brunch is VERY popular and good!! The park fees are the same as any other state park and your park pass will work here! Staff is great and informative and you can see some really cool views of Fall Creek after it leaves Geist Reservoir. Enjoy!!
Edgar Rodriguez
Love it. I'm from Las Vegas 😁 …
Johnny Tsai
A great getaway place nearby. Seeing the blue sky through tree lines while walking on the well maintained paved trails is just relaxing.
Katina Crowe
Beautiful park offering hiking, biking, trails, nature sight seeing, fishing, playgrounds, golfing, a hotel stay, and even horseback trails rides for kids AND adults! My boyfriend and I will bring our dog sometimes and she loves greeting new people she meets. A great nature park for a mini break of the day to day bush city life, close to where we live. It's an even better deal when you catch the free park days!
Jay James
Staff was able to direct us to exactly the kind of trail matched what we were looking for as well as helpful tips when the park is busy. The trail we tried (the shared bike and walking path) had excellent views snaking around a ravine. The path is narrow and probably more than a little dangerous when wet. It wasn't too difficult where it was dry though.

We stayed at the inn. The rooms are very large and comfortable! It is very clean and modernized. Great place to stay on a business trip.
Neil Mack
A wonderful place to go for your walks and enjoy nature of all kinds. I was there in March and saw deer at the side of the road. They have a large playground and open area for all your outdoor activities. There is a great nature center at this park. Check them out sometime soon.
Charles Garrett
Was there as a soldier in the 80s before it was a park. Loved the landscape. Made me happy to learn the beauty was preserved. Will visit soon.
Logan Hubbard
Fort Ben is always a good time and easy to access. Clean with good hiking and biking. A fun loop is to park at Camp Glen Trailhead and do the first half of Lawrence Creek, then Schoen Creek, then the back half of Lawrence Creek, then Camp Glen.
Victor Gersdorff
It's not the biggest or even best Indiana State Park but it's location in the middle of the states largest city makes it amazing how far out of the concrete jungle and in nature you can feel while only being a few blocks from civilization
Patrick PTMonk
If it's a weekend and it's after 10am, don't bother leaving your house, you won't get it. The park has refused to add 2 entrance lanes for YEARS. Honestly, walk out of your house and go on a 5 mile walk and it will take you less time than it would be just to get past the front gate
Also, I dont know who placed the mile markers on Lawrence Creek trail, but they sure messed up. Mile marker 2.5 and 2 are 1.2 miles apart.
There also needs to be a trashcan at the Lawrence Creek trailhead. Dogs poop in the field and nobody picks it up because there is no place to throw it away
If it has rained recently, all the trails are slippery. Plan accordingly
Rebecca Elliott
Went to visit at 2:30 on Mon Veterans Day observance with a group of seniors that includes veterans - park was supposed to be having free admission but it was closed & blocked off for deer hunting?
Steve Redinbo
This was my first time here, but the park and trails seem very well-kept. My two small children and I enjoyed a lazy afternoon stroll along Fall Creek, and some time on one of the playgrounds. The only downside to the day was extremely loud music coming from a gathering at one of the shelters. It would have been nice to hear the sounds of nature, and not profanity-laced rap music.
Tami Reardon
Lunch today was a great hike with my husband in the middle of the day! Not busy at all!
Fatima S
It has really good trails to have a peaceful run. Your furry friends are welcome as long as they’re on a leash. Only negative thing, there are no trash cans to throw away your dogs poop bags and you have to carry that with you.
David Riggleman
Nice state park close to the city, which is it's main advantage. It's not near the top of my list for best state parks in Indiana, but does offer a lot of different options, making it sort of a jack of all trades, but master of none. There are mountain biking trails, but foot traffic often lead me to ride elsewhere. There's hiking trails, but nothing scenic compared to Turkey Run. There's paved trails for biking, but nothing terribly long. There are also open fields great for a pickup game of Ultimate Frisbee or something else. Overall, it's a great place where everyone can find something to enjoy, but just not a top destination when breaking it down into specific categories like mountain biking or hiking.
Nick Granju
A Great Park to bring your dog. Lots of areas to run around and socialize with other dogs big and small. Never a boring time. my dog is always fully entertained when we come to this park
Trash bags and receptacles are provided. There's a fire pit and logs there right now.
Jeffrey Goodrich
Beautiful place for a hike. We did the Lawrence Creek trail and loved it. If you park at the LC trailhead, when you come to the start of the loop, take the left fork. It makes the hike more relaxing as that is the opposite direction bikes go so you won't have to always be watching over your shoulder for bikes.
derrick huesman
Plenty of trails to walk on. There's a lot of trees and nature here which makes it enjoyable to walk as a couple getting excercise, or as an individual. There's horses to ride and the occasional visit from historic military organizations. It's just all around a wonderful place to go. If you are ever in the vicinity, please go.
Daniel Spieth
Great park. Lots of nice walking, hiking and biking trails here. I would give it 5 stars if I could get in earlier in the morning as I like to ride my bike to work sometimes but they open too late for me to do this.
Anthony Rivera
Great piece of nature in Indy. It does get very busy here at times, but there is always a trail where peace and quiet can be found.
Rhiannon Hair-How To's Newman
Get immersed in nature and enjoy yourself😊. I know I did. …
The Creating Queen B.E.E.
A fantastic day of hiking and enjoying the weather at the park.
Sean Beasley
Hiking is a passion and doing it in Fort Harrison state park is a joy
Joshua I
Great state park and recreational facility.
Michelle C
Beautiful and clean park!
Ron Harman
Our favorite of the State Park Inn's.
Sunlight Fox06
Seen some deers and caught a couple fish. Awesome Day
William Barnes
The scenery is great, but the state really should invest more into the history that fills the area.
Lainey B
Great trails and park. Perfect for bringing your dog. You can also bike or fish here (permit needed to fish)
Derek Dolen
This is a great state park with lots of trails for all abilities as well as lots of playgrounds and activities for kids! Even on a busy day in the park you are still able to feel alone on a hike in the woods.
Shay Baby
Beautifull. clean and spacious park. In a convenient location. The ponds are available for fishing. The lake is nice but I wouldn't suggest swimming in it. Fireworks in the summer with plenty of space to BBQ.
Nigel Bancroft
Our favorite park in the whole state great waters, nice beaches, and tons of stuff to explore! Year pass is only 50 bucks and it's free on the weekdays!
Scott caldwell
No it isn’t as geologically exciting as Clifty Falls or historic as Mounds but the park has a lot to offer. Nice trails for hiking or biking, fishing, great playgrounds and many naturalist activities. The inn is a great place to stay.
Pa Ja
It's a beautiful park and I love going here when I can. Like so many activities in Indianapolis, it's not used as much as it should be.
Maybe if the annual pass fee was reduced later in the year, it would help a lot. Most people aren't going to pay $50.00 just to use the park in the busiest summer months.
Leah P.
This is the best park in Indianapolis, and I used to go several times a week to walk and hike and creek stomp. If you go in the evenings seeing deer is very likely. Although it's located in Lawrence and surrounded by the city, it's very quiet and beautiful. A great place to exercise or have a picnic while enjoying nature.
Matthew Acker (Uncommon Elixir)
I came to FHSP specifically to ride the bike trails with my dad. We both enjoyed the amount of time you spend hill climbing, and while I had trouble keeping up, it gave me time to appreciate the calm vistas of the park. There are also great pavilions for events or just sitting and catching your breath. There are a lot of things in the park, but this is all I had time to look at. Expand on this! Tell me what I missed. Keep in mind that there is an entry fee as it is a State Park.

Deduct: one star for no trash cans. Deduct: one star for allowing speeding bicyclists to use hiking trails and for ill-marked directional signs so you keep encountering walkers in the wrong direction in pandemic days. Bad: can't get a fishing license or state park card other than M-F normal business hours Good: a very large park that you can get lost in trails in an urban area. A large pond. Good: Since there's at least a carload entrance fee, there's minimal youth riff-raff inside which means hopefully less chance for crime and debauchery. More of a family atmosphere.
William Templeton
Fort Harrison is an excellent state park right near Indianapolis. The hiking is beautiful, although if you are seeking a longer or now challenging hike you will need to look elsewhere. This is a great place to bring children. I will be visiting several times with my annual pass.
Danielle Wrightsman
Great large park near to Indianapolis! I go here often to walk the trails with my dog. Very clean grounds, other patrons always good about carrying out their waste so the park stays nice!
I know people who have held Family Reunions and such there and they said the reservation process for pavilions is very easy!
Heather Hodson
Very pretty park, however, extremely narrow trails make it hard to navigate at times; popular mountain biking spot & not enough space for bikers & walkers on trails simultaneously; also has horse riding, public restrooms, picnic tables, & multiple parking areas.
Kyle Doles
Very nice park. Has well marked trails and multiple places to fish.
Only part we don't like is that the trails allow mountain bikes and they act like they own the place. We choose other parks for this reason.
Joan Harrison
This is a beautiful park..and has so much history..You reLly need to see this park
Teresa K
Great park! Many trails for many skill levels! Mountain bike trails are accessible and maintained. Harrison Trace is paved and is an easy walk for those with mobility concerns. Lawrence Creek Trail could be signed better as it is easy to get lost on that trail!
Raymond Vanlanot
A great place to unwind unless somebody breaks regulations and rides a mini bike without parental supervision on trails meant for people or people on non motorized bicycles. The really don't enforce the rules that are meant for all. One off, but notable. If this continues to beuninformed, it will provide nothing for nobody
The heck with relaxation??
Brian Hammett
Good State Park with many hiking trails. Several with multiple uses between hiking and bike riding. Limited natural wonders compared to other Indiana State Parks. War Museum on site is small but effective. It shows Hoosiers in wartime settings. It has many models due to smaller size. Pleasant place overall.
Monica M
We had a great time completing the first day walk that Fort Harrison put on. The fire pit and warm beverages after we’re a nice touch. It was nice they had someone getting a group together after the original start time, due to the long line to get in.
With that being said, there has to be a better way to get into the park. I imagine today was a busy day but the long line seemed unessessary with today’s technology.
Michelle Rene
I love hiking here. Even when I was pregnant it was a great experience
Treva Haddix
We went to a retirement party for a friend. This is the 1st time I have been there since it has become a state park. It is really nice. The party was in a barracks, fun fun. On our way out we saw a deer running along the road....he stopped and looked at us...lol
David Wefler
Beautiful park on the east side of Indianapolis. The walking, hiking, and biking trails are all very well maintained. The visitors center is very informative and has some excellent artifacts.
Friendly DNR staff. Can't wait to return.
Logan Rumbaugh
Nice state park located near Indianapolis. Several medium length hikes that are not extremely strenuous, a good place to go when you don't have all day to get outside.
Ben Browning
The Fort has great amenities and makes great use of the natural features of the area. It can be busy on weekends but that is a testament to the attractions it offers and its proximity to Indy. I recommend a visit!
Livy Ann
Awesome state park for walking, biking, or even wheeling! Most of the parks paths, sidewalks, restrooms, and centers are handicap accessible. My favorite path in the wheelchair is the walnut plantation path, however if I'm with someone who can push me on steep inclines the lake path is awesome! Pictured is the highest point of the lake path.
Jesse (BornSlyAsAFox)
This is an outstanding state park! It offers many hiking, biking, and running trails. The park also has a horse stable that offer guided tours on horseback. There is also multiple different playgrounds for children to play on. Enjoy history? The park has a small museum that exhibits artifacts dating to when the Natives used the land all the way up to WWII. If you enjoy to fish you have to come here! Fall Creek runs through most of the park and holds many different species of fish. Delaware Lake is my personal favorite of the whole park. There are two docks for family's to fish on or enjoy a picnic. Inside the lake there are tons of different species of fish such as Largemouth bass, Catfish, Carp, Crappie, Bluegill, Sunfish, and they even stock the lake with Rainbow Trout! Which is a fun fish to catch on a fly rod. If you're going solely for the trout though, your best chances to catch them is in late March or early April when they first stock the lake. The park fee is $7 I believe but, if you are an avid State Park goer I would buy the $50 annual park pass. It will get you into Fort Harrison and all State owned parks. All in all, this is a great park.
mandy dale
First time hiking there and we found 15 miles of trails creatively for the BSA hiking badge. Hiking buddy spotted 5 deer, two were fawns - I had no idea so much wildlife was in the park. We greatly enjoyed the two challenging trails, Schoen and the other (cannot recall name). Never hugged a dirt trail with bikers before but they were all pleasant and waited for us to scoot out of the way. Nicely maintained facilities as all IN DNR parks are. The wildflowers on Shoen Trail were a pleasant surprise and the tree trail was well marked with the different species too.
Owen LeGoff
The family and I love going hiking and fishing here.
Chrissy Jeffries
The park itself is great, great trails, plenty of places to picnic, great fishing, playing on playground equipment with my son. However the young lady at the stables is rude. I know people that raise horses and there is no way my son was too big for the ponies he weighs 65lbs soaking wet and I am grown and have been on a pony before, everything for a buck, horses are stronger than that and they said 5 and under. I have seen 5 yr olds that weigh more than my 10 year old and it should go by weight and not age if they're so worried about the ponies. Last I recall the horses were cheaper in brown county anyways.
David Campbell
Close to the city but beautiful.
Matthew Lauber
An excellent park located just outside the Indianapolis beltway. Of particular interest is the Schoen Creek trail, which has some rugged cliff side trails sure to excite. Best hiking near Indy short of travelling to Turkey Run State Park.
Bryan V Spellman
Hidden treasure in a metropolitan city. Great trails, awesome nature programs and an historic Inn (and military base). Take the dog for a walk, explore nature, run/jog/power walk, picnic with the family or attend any number of programs they have on a weekly basis. Worth the trip!!!!
Chris Leland
A hidden treasure in the Lawrence area. I live a lot closer to Eagle Creek Park, but make the drive over here sometimes to mix it up and because it has some really great hiking trails. Can get a little too busy on a nice weekend, though. Big bonus that you can use a state park pass here instead of having to buy a dedicated pass just for this park. Support your parks!
Allan Bullock
Excellent place for a weekend retreat. Staff was friendly, room was clean and spacious along with a fantastic jacuzzi tub and the continental breakfast was delicious.
Luis Ramirez
Great place to walk and have a relaxing moment
Matthew Rush
Great trails and lots of them. You can get away and get lost for a time out there.
Andrew Charboneau
Great park that is close to the city!!! I great place to escape and enjoy some wooded trails!
Sabrena Martin
Drove around the park for quite awhile, but could not find a playground for the kids to play on. Ended up leaving frustrated. Is a nice place to take in nature walks or bird watching. Free to enter on some days, but not sure what the conditions for 'no pay' days.
quentin avant
Spent more time on the deer trails. Good way to go if you like wild raspberries.
Samantha Paige
An old military center converted into a state park, Fort Ben has quite a bit to do. There are a pair of trails for mountain bikers, pavilions for families and friend groups to picnic, and an asphalt loop for bikers, runners, and walkers.
Be aware: that loop has quite the hill on it. The mountain bike/hiking trail is surprisingly hilly as well given our overall flatness in Indy, almost feeling like it belongs down south in Brown County.
One has to pay to park a vehicle, but you can also park off of the Fall Creek Trail and bike/run/walk less than a mile to get in for free.
Koji Muraoka (OG KOJI ZUMBA)
I go hiking every week with my family. It is such a nice place to observe the nature. I would highly recommend walking on the Duck Pond Trail.
illona lipovsky
Beautiful grounds, from easy to moderate trails. Lots of places to hike and picnic for corona virus safe day. We had a great time. Took the dog too.
Lorene Payne
Such fun to visit where my husband used to serve in the Army. Now a park with museum, beautiful vistas (especially fall leaf colors). Enjoy the hiking trails!
Debra Rainey
Nice place to visit nice park I really enjoyed myself.
Rita Majors
This is a food Buffet that serve brunch all day. The food is good and I will come back. Check out their lunch time schedule which is from 10-2pm everyday and on someday is from 6-8pm. Their food is a good home cooking food. All you can eat.
Debbie H.
Nice state park with a paved trail and regular trails also. Small lake for fishing. Picnic areas and a hotel. Highly recommend.
Ash H
Good cycling paths, and horse back riding trails. They also have a good playground for kids and clean picnic tables.
Be sure to bring trash bags if you have a picnic here, you are expected to take your trash with you
Brittany Harp
My son and I had a great day here!
D. D. W.
Great times with my family 💕😊💕 …
Missy Faber
Wonderful. I love this park. I took a client with disablities to the saddle barn. The staff was welcoming and allowed us to pet a horse, even though we were not going to be able to ride. So sweet!
sue pick
Beautiful building and comfortable rooms.
Katie McCarthy
Has a great playground for kiddos! I really like the slide
Chris Kirby
One of the most beautiful places in Indianapolis. The park is always a great place to bike and run. There are events going on here pretty regularly as well. If you want a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Indy daily life and need nature in your life this is your place.
Chris Pacifico
Great hidden gem. Hiking playgrounds and cookout areas
Zaneon Meinhart
Great walking trails.
Glady Dawnstar
Great place to walk your dog, go fishing, or have your kids play on the few parks there. In the winter there's even a hill to sled down. The park rangers are always friendly and helpful as well.
sun byoung Park
Beautiful Delaware Lake scenery with fall foliage
Andrew Short
Only four stars because it is very much a product of it's environment, that doesn't suit me as much as it obvious suits others. "Yuppie hiking", very much like its counterpart on the NW side of Indy: Eagle Creek Park. Lawrence Creek Trail and Schoenberg Creek Trail are pretty good ones to gauge how serious you might be about hiking. They are a good start. I just prefer the ruggedness of something like Morgan Monroe State Forest and the rugged trails there.
Having said that, it's a beautiful place. It's a blessing to have Fort Harrison just 5 minutes off of I-465.
Alicia Sweet
Needs better signage or symbols but you can’t get lost
Roger Moore
Living downtown, I sometimes crave a treeline view over my skyline view. Fort Harrison State Park (or "Fort Ben" as it's called by the locals) was a beautiful place to see the falling leaves and changing colors of fall. I loved that it offered both paved trails and woodsy terran. Beware, though, the woodsy trails get quite muddy if there's been any rain so I'd recommended hiking boots for exploring these. You DO have to pay to get into the park but you're greeted by a ranger who offers you a map and guidance (if needed). Happy Trails!
Patti Lacey
I was very surprised how big this park was during my first ever visit in 2020. It is worth getting a $50 park yearly pass if you can afford it. They have a State Park Inn here at this location with restaurant inside.
Brian C

Always a great place to visit. We hiked on the paved path. Everything is in great condition and the park is beautiful. Everyone is always really courteous. The only inconvenience we experienced was that the line to get into the park moved really slowly.
Mark Sullivan
What's not to like? Beautiful park. Well maintained in all the common areas. Has a historic feel. Mountain bike trails to choose from.
Sam Iam
Highly recommend visiting the nature center/Park office. Naturist David is kind friendly and very knowledgeable on any questions you could ask. The museum is also incredible and I loved the lake.
Nicholas John
Cool park! Had not been here before. Plenty of trails, shelters, etc. All very close to town.
Fernando Espinal
Enjoy our trail walks, also you can ride your bike.
Patrick Helmecy
Beautiful state park, with plenty to do
Isaac Garst
Fantastic place, everything has a personal touch. They road their own coffee, have delicious & unique baked goods, and other tasty food creations! Also, you can't go wrong with a place that has a spiral staircase!
ERIC GRINSTEAD
Fort Harrison the commissary is off the chain everybody needs to go if you're a military you need to go to the commissary you pay no taxes on groceries and it is a good place to go and shop they do have like freezer boxes that are like anywhere from 30 to $60 and they do help out especially now that it's getting cold you know like with cube steaks if you like some type of pork products boneless pork chops tenderloin of pork ground beef you know it's kind of expensive right now but for Benjamin Harrison at the commissary he's got your back
David Mahurin
I have purchased an Indiana State Park annual pass the past 3 years and it's the best money I spend each year. Fort Ben is quite large and well-maintained. The park staff is always very friendly each time I come.
Lina Cricelli
Love the park. Went to the Blues and BBQ fest with a friend. Music was great. Area beautiful, hayride fun. However, when we got there...Food and beer were gone.
Jordan Powell
Nice park in the middle of Indianapolis. Not necessarily an all day hiking location but beautiful
H. Minimal
Lots of great walking trails and Beautiful nature. The creeks were full of lots of special rocks and shells.
BadBunky1769
Have an annual pass. Nice trials for hiking & biking. Multiple picnic area pavilions & sites. Their dog park on Fall Creek charges an annual fee but is best in city.
Janice Gardner
Very beautiful park, hiking, horseback riding, grilling, playgrounds...
Mary Bales
We had a fantastic family reunion here. We had rented one of the buildings which added to the fantastic event. A really cool looking tree by building one but the poison ivy was not cool. Hopefully the kids that enjoyed climbing it didn't have to experience getting the poison ivy.
Travis Mumford
Went for some sledding. Frequently bike here. Great little getaway in the middle of indianapolis.
Nice little fishing pond as well.
Stephen Jones
Very nice park to visit, very peaceful atmosphere if u like the outdoors, walking, jogging hiking picnicking.great for family gathering.
