Went here with my roommate for a graduation party and our coaches were Will and Patrick. Had an incredible experience, got much better at axe throwing and enjoyed great competition with colleagues and friends alike. This is an experience I'd highly recommend, the coaches are experienced and funny. The process is straightforward and easy enough to follow, we had such a great time! The bar was easy and accessible, not a ton of food options but that was fine there are tons of other good food places nearby.

It was a fun one time outing to do a pretty uncommon activity. The instructor was friendly and our group really enjoyed the 2 hour event. They start off with everyone getting a turn at being instructed on both two hand and one hand throwing, then move on to a round robin style one on one and finally end it with a knockout tournement of all the members in your group. They also sell beers, seltzers and sodas to enjoy during your 2 hours. While it was definitely fun, at $50 per person it isn't too likely we'll be returning for another round anytime soon. The one thing that irked me at the end of the night was when a staff member asked me IN FRONT OF our instructor how much I would like to tip her. Found that pretty unclassy, because it's like if a waiter at a restaurant asked you directly how much you are going to tip them. I even suggested that I would walk over to the counter to sign the receipt for the remaining balance and set the tip, but she instead asked how much percent I would like to tip her again. Besides that one thing, it was an enjoyable night and our instructor even showed her own deadly precision with a few trick shots.

Visited Urban Axes for my nearlywed party and it was tons of fun! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and for a crew that mostly hadn’t thrown axes before, they made it really easy to pick up the form. Going as a group it was pretty quiet, and it was nice to have the space to throw and play Jenga and hang out. The Pride flags were a welcoming touch 🏳️‍🌈 definitely recommend, and Kevin was a fantastic coach!

Had a great time here with my fiancé. The staff were very friendly, and helped make the experience top notch. We will definitely come back here and do recommend it to others all the time. The only downside is the parking lot is very small and tight.

Very fun experience! Went here for a team building work outing and had a blast. Our instructor (don't remember his name, started with Sh?) was awesome, very friendly, and very helpful. There was a good selection of drinks (beer, wine, seltzer, soda) along with pizza and wings. I'd never thrown axes before but look forward to doing it again sometime.

Went as a party of 6 and had a private booth with a coach and it was tons of fun! The coach teaches you different ways to throw the axe and then stays with the group the whole time to create matches, keeps score, and help you improve. There’s also a tournament they run for groups to keep things competitive. In a good area, easy to get to, can be part of a day with other activities in Union Square. Definitely would go back and recommend to others in the area!

Had a great time here for my birthday party, but two major cons 1) it’s pretty expensive for groups, $50 per person not including tip. They were also pretty pushy about us leaving a 20% tip even though we didn’t have a great coach. 2) our coach was pretty standoffish and didn’t help much without prompting, until I felt like I was bothering him by asking questions. However the other staff, including the people who checked us in and the people managing the food counter, were really friendly and even gave me a free birthday beer which made me feel special 😊. That’s the reason I’m giving 4 instead of 3 stars, if it was throwing axes alone I felt a bit unsupported.

Super fun as a group activity. Coaching is a hit or miss though. Our group had two coaches, and while one was genuinely interested in your success, the other one didn't care all that much. But overall it was a great experience, we felt very welcome there and had a blast.

My wife and I have been in the League here for over a year and have made many close friends. The staff, coaches, and community are all wonderful and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. We've enjoyed booking throwing events with friends several times and everyone always walks away happy and ready for more. See you next week!

What a fun evening! Jimmy was great and this was our first time we came to throw axes. Jimmy walked us through every bit of the process and when it was the match time — omg! We had such a fabulous competitive match and someone who walked in with no experience walks out winning by one point! ❣️ Loved the evening out here. It was such a fantastic experience and very therapeutic when you focus and let go at the same time. Must try for anyone willing to experience something new in Boston! Easy to locate in Somerville and ample amount of parking space.

Such an amazingly fun night! 4 of us, way over 40…super fun great atmosphere! What made the experience perfect was our ah-max nh coach Jean! First she was soooo patient with us. She kept score and was encouraging no matter how poorly we did. We highly recommend urban axes and if you can request Jean definitely do it.

Wow. I've been waiting two years to try this place, it was just as amazing as I'd hoped. Throwing an axe is empowering and scary and the coaches make you feel very comfortable, safe, and train you in a way that's still fun. I'll be back. No drinks while throwing so make sure you build some time before or after to grab a drink.

We had a great time there. We were there for my brother's bachelor party. They accommodated us as we were a party of 11. We did 2 groups starting at 3 and had a great time to celebrate! My brother and brother in law would go again and bring others to join the fun! Highly recommend it for events that you are planning or just a night out for fun!

They have free parking on site. Fun night out. You can bring your own food and purchase beverages at the bar. A little pricey at $40/person but worth it for a fun unique activity

This place is actually pretty fun & different in terms of something to do while your in area. The axe throwing at first seemed of but after experiencing it myself I must say I enjoyed it. The place is pretty spacious & pretty clean as well. I would recommend trying this at least once as it is very different but a very fun time. The beer selection was ok did not really like it or hate any of their selections just wasn’t a fan of it. Food wise I suggest eating before you get there as there really isn’t much of a selection other than a cheese platter. Place does get booked quickly & sometimes the person on the phone & then in person will tell you a couple different things when it comes to availability. But overall this was a very fun & awesome experience will def try again.

I came here with a group of about 10 friends. The staff is welcoming and friendly, especially Shelby. He was our guy and he hyped us up the entire time, offered tips on how to throw better, and was encouraging and funny. I'd never gone axe throwing before so I didn't know what to expect. Been a league member here for about a year and I have never felt more connected to a group of people than the crew and leaguers here. Kim is like the queen of the place with a great supporting set of people. Dave manning the bar. K and Shelby as League Coaches are sone of the best I’ve known. Tom and Leah are a wicked loving duo that coach groups like leading a family game night. Coaches I’ve seen lead some great groups are Chris, Kyle, Dave, Amanda, Alex, Will, Kevin, Patrick, Dan, & Derek. These people are all amazing to have in out axe throwing community. They all make the place what it is and it wouldn’t be the same with them.

The axe throwing here was really fun. Unfortunately I don’t think paying $30 for one hour is worth it. Me and a friend were in a group with 4 other people for the social hour, the other 4 people got there late by about 5 minutes which meant we started at 8:05pm instead of 8pm. We shared the hour of taking turns with these other people which meant we weren’t playing for the full hour. On top of this, our instructor ended the session at 8:54pm so we lost 10 minutes of playing time. It’s a really fun activity but for the cost and the playing time it really isn’t that worth it. I know there are other places with mini games and that let you play for the entire hour alongside an instructor without having to share the space.

Our instructor/coach was a lot of fun and the experience was a lot of fun. The window to play was longer than I expected, which was great, and the training on each throw was rather helpful. We were able to do both single and double handed, so that you could choose which you felt more comfortable with. There was scoring at the end, and a "winner" with the best score was chosen, which was great!

I visited Urban Axes in Somerville a few months back with a group of about a dozen or so colleagues, and we had an absolute blast. The staff was friendly and helpful, the price per person felt reasonable for the amount of time that we were allotted, and the beer selection was great. Would highly recommend this place for all of your axe throwing needs. Will definitely visit again.

An incredibly fun experience. It's a great place to take a date if you want to try something out of the ordinary. If you're interested my only advice is to definitely be careful of parking. It's very competitive, so I would recommend ridesharing. Also, your entire reserved slot will be chaperoned by an ax throwing coach. Ours was wonderful and very fun but if you are looking for something a little more private, you should be prepared for it .

Awesome venue. Friendly staff. Safe environment. Booze and food available. Fun place. Venue would do well to add some acoustic paneling to help with noise levels. Its very difficult to hear coaches and to have side convos.

This was so much fun! We made the reservation is advance(pro tip) the staff at the location were very friendly and professional. Our instructor Derek was not only helpful but enthusiastic. He kept our party going while giving great coaching advice. I will absolutely be back!! After you've thrown axes for a night, darts seems like a little kids game! The venue is in the heart of Union Square! They also have a bar, so you can effectively keep your throwing arm liberal with libations!

This place did not disappoint. My wife took me here for my birthday - we had drinks and snacks while we waited for our slot, then had an instructor walk us through the mechanics. Once we had our distance, he kept score while we whipped hatchets at a target along with 2 other couples. Satisfying fun!

AMAZING for group outings and team building! I organized a work outing for my Lab and Admin team with Urban Axes with Brianna (sweetest person). My whole group was nervous about going in, but once the coaches came in with their fantastic teaching skills everyone was having a blast! We rented out for a group of 60 and they were amazing at handling our giant party as well. Would 100% recommend this to anyone going. The bar is stocked pretty great, lots of fun merch, funny and helpful coaches/management/event planners. Trust me, take your team there, they'll LOVE it!

We went here to celebrate a friend's birthday in early February and it was such an incredible time!!! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for something fun, high energy, and a little bit different. Even those of us who weren't very good at it (no bullseyes for some!!) spent the entire time laughing. We had Cesar as a coach and he was very professional but a lot of fun! Definitely a great night spent with friends and a lot of fun!

Update:still great! I joined the weekly league and have tons of fun. Definiatly worth it. A good time with friends. I went to this yesterday on the second day they were open and it was tons of fun. It was great to meet other people and try something new. Our instructor was great, and everyone seemed like they had a great time. I wish that you could book a time and throw at your leisure too to practice on your technique. I highly suggest this for small or large groups. I'm looking forward to seeing the updates as this place grows. Parking is limited but it does exist.

So much fun. I never expected it to be that awesome. Just wish I had more time for more throws! Our coach Tony was super friendly and enthusiastic. The beer selection was nice. The games and tournament made it an interesting competition with friends, and it was super exciting when anyone got a "clutch" or a few bulls eyes in a row. My only gripe is it was a little pricey, but totally worth it once I remember how awesome it is. 10/10 would recommend.

Brought our company of 10 people for a going away party for one of the employees. Travis was our Coach, he was excellent. Travis took a genuine interest in our abilities to throw the axes and had us all hitting the targets in no time. The entire event was extremely well organized. We ordered a couple of cheese and cracker/veggie platters a head of time, they were laid out and ready for us when we arrived. Everyone had a great time and Travis made it big fun and kept it moving! Highly recommend

Pros: -Our coach was awesome, chill, and helpful. -A lot of fun and well organized and safe. Cons: -Customer service could be improved. A girl at the front desk was cool about taking a pic for us on our way out, but then inexplicably came across pretty rude to us when we asked nicely if we could keep our scorecard after we finished as a souvenir. -We had a group of just 3 ppl which means you cant book a time before showing up -I think we were there a little over an hour and alternating with another group of 3, so for $25 each i think we should get to throw longer. Overall a fun experience and will do it again sometime

I went here right before the pandemic started and it was so much fun! The place has a great little wine/beer bar and some snacks and a seating area that you can hang out before/after you've done your axe throwing. The axe throwing itself was great! You're in groups of 6 and cycle through as pairs of 2. You get more throwing time than I expected, but you'd obviously get more if you ended up in a smaller group (went during less busy hours). The instructors are all excellent and they make sure you have a lot of fun while staying safe - definitely important in my book. Can't wait to go back here after the pandemic.

What a blast! I won our "bracket" and got to hold the big ax for the photo. Highly recommend you check it out. Accessible for all skill/competitiveness levels due to the thorough training they give you before throwing. They have a decent selection of canned beer available. It's definitely worth the somewhat high price.

My friends and I went out on a Sat night. One of the coolest things I have done. The place has parking place, good selection of beers. Emily was our coach who taught us how to throw axes and she was amazing. We had a great time!

This was so much fun! I hope to get a group of friends together to head back. Our coach, Richard was soo nice and super helpful with tips and tricks. This made it so much easier to catch on. He kept score the whole time which made it a lot easier for us to enjoy throwing. I hope to be able to request Richard again for a coach if I return because he was awesome. I think it really made the experience way more enjoyable having someone with so much patience to find a technique that worked for each person in our group. He really wanted us to get it down and have fun! Highly recommend. I forgot closed toed shoes and they had them there but i think they only keep a limited amount so try to remember to wear the appropriate shoes!

A group of friends and I reserved a lane for my birthday and had a lot of fun! Riss was our instructor and was amazing and funny, she had all of us hitting the board and laughing the whole time. We did order the meat and cheese platters which was tasty enough, though a bit pricey. The only thing that bothered me was about 15 minutes before our session was up, another employee came over to confirm that our reservation was paid in full and that we could leave a tip for our coach at the front. I'm all for gratuity but nowhere on the website or invoices does it mention gratuity, otherwise I could have let my group know in advance to bring extra cash for just this purpose. PLUS, when I did leave what cash we could get together, the person at the front put it in their pocket with no note so I'm not even 100% that cash even made it to Riss. Overall, a super fun experience and something I would definitely do again.

I enjoyed axe throwing. However, the service was terrible. From the get go the cashiers had an attitude and were giving sass. The coach was nice enough but could have lighten up a bit. We are paying for an experience and I should feel like I am being prepared to have fun. Obviously, safety is important but delivery is as well. Comments throughout were off-putting as opposed to continuing to encourage a fun experience.

Went to a birthday party at Urban axes and I thought the whole experience was really fun. The instructors taught us how to swing the axes for maximum effectiveness. We learned a few different methods. We also had enough people that we did a huge bracket to figure out the ultimate axe throwing champion. It was a great time and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't done it. It was also safe!

This was my first axe throwing bar, and I'm quite impressed, staff was knowledgeable and kept us safe while we drank and threw objects that could do us physical harm so I'm eating the safety level as an A+ (because I know that's what most people are worried about when looking into these places). Good local beer selection and right in a happening spot for post-throwing foods. Everyone in our group had a great time, highly recommend!

It was a lot more fun and safe then I thought it would be. Our group had 6 people, 2 people throw at a time. Each thrower has their own target to throw at. The instructors are with you the whole time making sure everyone is throwing correctly and safely. By the end everyone had gotten the hang of it. Totally recommend this.

Unique, safe and fun. Wait times can be very long so stop in for a time slot early. Like with alot of similar event based business (escape rooms) you are put into groups ~6 with 2 throwing axes at a time, so be prepared to possibly throw axes with strangers. Coaches monitor each area and ours was friendly with excellent tips to improve our throw. Reasonable drink (beer/wine) menu with a small food menu as well. Feel as if the hour went by very fast for the actual number of throws are allowed to make. At 25 dollars per hour per person you need to be quick to get your monies worth. I want to give 5 stars because I had so much fun, but I would like to see some improvement in their processes first. You go thinking you're paying for a lane for just you and your people but if there's less than four of you then you could end up sharing a lane with strangers (perhaps this doesn't happen on a weekday but it did on a Friday night). This isn't necessarily a bad thing but when you pay thinking you're getting a lane to yourself for an hour and arrive to find out that's not the case it's a bit disappointing. Also, if anyone in your group or the other group doesn't show up on time to hear the safety instructions they aren't allowed to throw at all. They just lose their money. No rescheduling or anything. If they show up a few min late and the instructor has already gone through safety info they make everyone else wait (cutting into throwing time) until the late person hears all of the instructions too. So cushion your traffic time!! Haha. We were under the impression the safety instructions would last 5-10 min but it actually ended up being 20 minutes, leaving 40 for fun. Suggestion for the company would be have people show up 15 min early and go to a separate lane for instructional & safety info/practice before heading to your actual lane at your scheduled time to throw. Also their parking lot is on the right side of them if you are facing the front of the building. It's simpler to get to by taking the alley behind their building and circling around instead of busting a U-Turn in the middle of union st.

We had a group outing there and had a good time. Instructors were attentive and personable, but the place was VERY loud so it was tough to hear instructions. It also seems pretty unsafe. They have fences to try and separate things but often the axe will bounce back to where someone (you or next to you) is standing. My axe head broke off when I was trying to retrieve it which had if it come off when I was throwing could have been quite bad. Beer selection was good, lots of craft beers local and non local.

We had our team event here, the place is nice and we'll organized. Definitely give it a try, a fun activity for family as well. They also have a small bar and serve beer. A few parking spots were available during our visit , they share the parking with a auto body shop or so.

About what I expected. My fiancée and I threw axes for an hour. The coach walked us through technique and kept score for a variety of game types. Probably more fun with 4+ people in a group. You get the hour you pay for, so get there on time. This is made very clear in the site. Another couple arrived 45 minutes late and only got 15 minutes of throw time. Pretty good beer and cider selection, too. Don't bring the kids! Gotta be 21+ to throw axes.

Had an amazing experience throwing axes here. We had Emily for a coach. She was amazing. As fun as throwing axes is, if you get a coach that isn't having a good time it'll suck you down. Emily seemed to be having as much fun coaching us as we were having throwing axes. Good variety of craft beers and ciders. Didn't try the snacks but will next time. I will definitely return soon.

It was a fun experience but tbh I spent more time waiting/listening than axe throwing. You really don’t get your full hours worth. $60 bucks for roughly >15 mins of actual axe throwing. Probably won’t be back but it was fun. Got there on time and didn’t start throwing until 15 after our time as we had to wait for the other party (randos). In the end it’s not worth the $60.

It is a fun place. I took my boyfriend there for his bday. For $25 you have an hour to compete with two other teams. In the beginning it looks difficult, but you get the groove of it eventually. It looks unsafe sometimes, especially if the person next to you throws the ax obnoxiously, but there is the trainer between you giving the directions all the time. So it didn’t feel dangerous for us. They have great beer selection!

If you like launching an object at a target, then you'll love ax (hatchet) throwing on to a target. Weekends are the busiest, and if you don't already have a reservation it may be hard to get in. Small groups will be grouped together to ensure each lane is maximized. (from my experiences, this common of some other ax throwing places too) Like bowling you will need to take turns as it would be highly dangerous to retrieve an ax while another person throws. Safety first! Depending on your group size, the way Urban Axes processes through is the following: 1. practice set: warm up, learning how to throw if it's your first time, etc. 2. seeding: 3 rounds of 5 throws (15 throws total) 3. tournament style: depending on group size and time, best of 3 rounds or best of 5 throws, each person who wins advances to the championship So, if you're into other formats, this might not be the ax place for you. This "sport" is becoming a trend, so maybe more spots might open up soon to accommodate the high demand.

I'm hesitant to write a good review about this place because I want to keep this all to myself... BUT I CANT HELP IT THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE. Everyone who works here is a delight, the drinks are good (pro tip: dont buy glasses of wine JUST GET THE BOTTLE), its a fun experience, and you get to throw axes with total strangers and meet friends under strangely violent and socially acceptable settings. I've been here a few times and have had a great experience every single time. P.s. one time my ax bounced off the wall and landed in the partition and i dont understand how but here's an artistically framed picture of the result.

I joined a league and overall had a fun time and learned a new skill. I simply can’t give it 5 stars because the food is awful! I tried a sandwich and a cheese place. Both items were subpar and lacked flavor. The bread wa super thick and bland, the amount of cheese amount was small compared to the price. It was know throughput it the league to not order food from the kitchen.
