Reviews of Midwest Mountaineering

Great outfitter with wonderful and knowledgeable staff. Very expensive though. Upstairs is where they keep the discount items ;) good luck!
Jennifer B
Our favorite Twin Cities outdoor store for gear and good deals. Get on their email list — they don’t send a lot of junk mail and do send great coupons from time to time. Make sure to visit Thrift Outfitters upstairs too for great deals on sample apparel and other stuff.
Alice Jasmine Crippa
Surprisingly big camping and outdoor store with all the best brands and a neighborhood-y feeling. Very knowledgeable staff. Prices a little over the average but they have a discount store on the first floor for more deals. Excellent selection overall.
Chuck Mabanag
A great place to shop for the outdoorsman who happens to live in a concrete wilderness. Prices are a bit high, but the products are well made and brand names. Employees are friendly and willing to assist you in buying the best item for your adventure.
Sam Becker
The sales staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. I love my new XC skis, boots and poles!!
August Eggers
Pricey but really nice inside and they have a discount floor upstairs! The owners and workers are very nice too. I come here whenever I need gloves or smart wool.
Laura Bowman
I was visiting Minneapolis and packed the worst shoes imaginable for the amount of walking I was doing. In a desperate attempt to find something better, I found this store via Google as being in my general vicinity. I went in and explained my situation and they helped me right away and I found maybe the best walking shoes I've ever had! So grateful for the staff here.
Dan Bailey
I loved my experience here -- I got to work with Evan, who helped me pick out the gear I needed to get back into climbing after an 18-year layoff. Super-supportive staff, great product selection, and prices that are competitive with much larger places like REI. These guys are my go-to for climbing and outdoors gear.

We visited this store today with the goal of evaluating kayaks in person, knowing that we’d probably need to order a distinctive tandem model I’d spoken about once before, on the phone, with an employee. I’ve spent months considering this potential purchase, and talked myself into a pricier type of boat over time. You know how these purchases go, I’m sure. It takes time, and then when you’re ready it’s exciting to pick out the last details. Good fun!
The shop has a really substantial stock of kayaks and canoes in stock, and there are some styles you don’t see elsewhere at all. This is a premier outdoors place — and while it’s priced to meet that standard, I had talked myself (at least mostly) into paying that price. That’s how I walked in: I was ready to buy, but needing a little more assistance and advice to go home happy.
I spent nearly an hour, and walked past every last boat on the floor (or the ceiling), without ever eliciting any help or real interest from the seemingly-pleasant but thoroughly indifferent employees of Midwest.
Two young women talked at length about their schedules at the end of one room; in the other, two others sat cross-legged on top of the cash wrap chatting amiably with a third employee who had passed me perhaps four times without glancing in my direction. I went from room to room, back and forth. I went up to the bargain second floor area, tried multiple things on, and came back down for a fresh try. No dice.
It isn’t technically true that nobody spoke with me. When I exclaimed at the beautiful woodwork on a particular canoe on the way in, someone explained a little about how it was made — without, apparently, having it occur to him that I might want to buy such a thing. Granted, my interest probably wasn’t in $6,000 canoes, but actually that price wasn’t completely unimaginable… And I would think that a store full of employees might have at least asked me to see.
So I don’t know… This place is a lavish outdoor equipment and apparel shop, priced to match that… where I couldn’t even manage to get anyone to look my way when I stood at the shoe rack, or admired several boats in detail, or tried on a bunch of clothes. At some point you feel pretty invisible.
Edit: I’d like to acknowledge the straightforward reply from the owner below. No malice intended toward anyone involved. I don’t want to run down college kids working for their spending money, or anything… It just didn’t work for me this time.
Bruce Chaput
Great selection and prices. Don't forget to check out the upstairs where all the best deals are. The staff are super helpful too, don't hesitate to ask for advice if you are confused.
Hilary Callahan
As a New Yorkers, it was almost worth the cost of a trip to Mpls to shop at this awesome coop, especially the thrift dept on the second floor. I actually shopped for & bought new Altra trail-running shoes and was grateful for the expert and attentive service. Certainly the thermal & social warmth per dollar ratio cannot be found anywhere in our wimpy East Coast city, where we have only REI & EMS, now the only giant chains that can afford rent. (A warm coat here is cozy, not something you need to stay alive. But still.) I also tip my helmet to Tent'n'Trail in Tribeca, a mere memory and always a dark cramped basement, nothing like the airy loft-like feel of this place. Long live Midwest Mountaineering.
Natasha Villanueva
This place is very tempting since I always find multiple items I want to buy. The staff are helpful and if you sign up for emails they have great sales. I love being able to support a local coop while picking up quality equipment for the outdoors.
Ryan Berglund
Midwest Mountaineering is one of the best camping and outdoors stores I've ever been to. The staff are incredibly helpful, they have an excellent selection, and great prices (especially their sales). I especially appreciate that they carry brands that stores like REI won't carry due to smaller profit margins than bigger brands.
Robert K Kroll
What a great Store to Shop at , All the Good Stuff all in one Store, it's your Outdoor headquarters.
Purchased my Oboz Sawtooth 2 Low at 25% off during Midwest Mountaineering Annual Outdoor Adventure Expo.
April 23rd-May 2nd 2021
Love this Store has everything for your Outdoor needs big time .
Staff is Amazing and very knowledgeable.
Highly recommended.
Thank you Midwest Mountaineering

I had been reading and hearing about Midwest Mountaineering for almost 10 years and had to finally go visit! It was wonderful! The building and store itself is an incredible old, wonderfully preserved structure that completely makes the whole experience even better. There is an amazing assortment of products and equipment and the staff is fantastic and so friendly! I spent an hour climbing in the bouldering facility and thoroughly enjoyed myself as well as getting a good workout. Not only will I be back but I look forward to it each time!
Andy Guelcher
Incredibly helpful and knowledgeable employees, who were understanding of my concerns and needs in regards to finding what type of boot I needed.
Neal Johnson
I really enjoy this classic downtown locally owned outdoor store. Wish more people knew about this. I like spending dollars at this local store over REI.
Kevin Kim
Let's face it - most retail experiences are pretty unremarkable and lackluster. This was not the case at Midwest Mountaineering.
Visited this store for the first time a couple days ago and I was BLOWN AWAY by how helpful and patient everyone was. The person helping me decide which boots to purchase and assisting with sizing, the two people who helped with sleeping bag and pad selection for my kid, and the person at the cash register were all just about the friendliest and knowledgeable people I've interacted with.
On top of that, the selection is incredible and prices are very reasonable. I see no reason to step into an REI ever again.
James Didier
Literally love this place. Always a positive shopping experience and the events are so fun and informative!
Steven Skolasinski
Great store with knowledgeable staff. Locally owned and very active in the community. They host great outdoor gear expos twice a year, and monthly pint nights in the summer to socialize with other outdoor enthusiasts. Discount store upstairs sells previous years designs for up to 50% off retail. Everything from parka's to snow pants to socks to base layers, lots of backpacks as well as some tents and sleeping bags all brand new for a great price because they're not the current color scheme.
Brian Viengthong
This is the best place to go for hiking, sporting and all things outdoor in MN. Make sure to check out the bi-annual employee garage sale. You will find the best deals with superior customer service.
Ben Nicholas
I've been looking for a great quality winter ski jacket and found it here! Kris who works upstairs is extremely helpful and is willing to go above and beyond to help you. I highly recommend this place for all your winter gear. Definitely check out their upstairs!
Jessica Miller
I think everyone in the store helped me at some point, I was greatful for their knowledge and friendliness. Been a wonderful store for a long time. Glad somethings don't change. I am very excited to use all the great gear I got. Bee well and adventure onwards!
Tyler Dvorak
It's like REI if REI employed people who actually loved the things they sold. Great selection, good prices, fun atmosphere and fun helpful employees.
UPDATE: Go here to get fitted for your backpacking packs! I just purchased one with them and was fitted to it quite well. My partner had hers refitted and it was a full size off from her previous fitting! Chandler was SUPER helpful! Still 5/5.
Scott Greymont
What a great place for your outdoor gear. Lots of staff who know their stuff.
John Blaylock
Best place for outdoor gear in the Twin Cities! Staff knows their stuff, because they live what they sell. Great customer service during & after your purchase. Elizabeth in the clothes department is super helpful, knowledgeable & honest about it all. And, it's locally owned, not a big chain. Go there!
Aidan _
Loved the great selection they had, I went in for climbing shoes and it I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for but I it seems the outdoor equipment they have is very quality! However, the staff member I worked with was quite rude. Very snobby about my choice of climbing footwear, did not seem to care about what I wanted and brought out shoes that were very different (the selection I had asked for was not in stock). When I brought it up to him and tried to strike a conversation he almost immediately picked up the phone, which I found very frustrating.
Kiersten Carlson
Great deals. Great selection, friendly staff! Only thing to be aware of if you are going for the thrifty outfitters upstairs which had reat discounts on factory firsts or samples, they only have stuff for small women and large men. I'm a larger 5'10 woman so nothing is my size. Everything is sized small or medium. And a smaller size man won't fair well either because it's all mediums and larges.
Rebecca Miniscalco
Found out what we needed, and mostly upstairs in the Thrifty area where items are significantly discounted. We didn't join the customer list bc we were in a slight hurry, but I'm almost certain we will be back and will join next time!
Gina Erwin
I Love the store, the salesman was attentive to my husband and I. He was very polite and he assisted us in a very respectful manner. We will be back to shop for more items. Two thumbs up.
Mark Weinfurter
Absolutely love this place. Locally owned, and the staff is great. They have a great selection of outdoor gear. Canoes check, backpacks check, sleeping bags check, cloths check! They have a great close out section too.
Dave Duerre
I was very happy with the work they did on my CC Skis, I'd say this store has the widest variety of products and the most knowledgeable staff in the cities for many years now.
Bill Thompson
They have the best sleeping bags and an assortment of camping equipment that isn't available in other stores.
Paul Bishop
Great store with a fantastic selection of outdoor gear.
Michael Stifter
First time here!
Came in to try on a couple pairs of boots. Found one that I liked but was expensive so will have to find a sale somewhere.
The highlight of our trip was this person named Joe (?), with longer black hair. They were so incredibly helpful and insightful in looking for boots. Able to give insight about different brands and what might work best for what type of hiking we usually do.
Renee Herdtle
Can't say enough good things about this store. If you like outdoor stuff, go.
They have a wide range of outdoor gear given how physically small the store is compared to REI, Cabela's, etc. The best thing is their staff. I know quite a bit about outdoor gear and every time I go I find another person to learn from!
Upstairs they have the best part: manufacturers samples. Women's S and Men's M for sure I've seen many times. This is the current years sample products that are heavily discounted so you can get clothes not even on the shelf yet. Call ahead for sizing and what brands are in.
They are so helpful and friendly, whether you're a seasoned backpacker or just starting out this is a great place to go.
Jordan Stoeger
An exceptional place to spend a few hours if you're a gear junkie. Folks here can be a little gear-snobby, but not any more than I'd expect given the fact that they're employees at MWM. I would give five stars if they offered some plus size options. Not everyone who likes to climb/hike/run/ski has a 30 inch waist.
Shawn H.
Always helpful staff. Great brands — both national and locally-made. We’ve shopped here many times over the past 15 years or so. Thrifty Outfitters upstairs is a hidden gem. Lots of factory samples at heavy discounts. It’s a great way to get into higher end outdoor gear than you might typically buy — if the sizes are right. They’re often small or medium.
I got a set of backcountry cross country skis at a great deal. Lots of all-around stuff. Climbing, camping, kayak/canoe, and more.
Parking is validated so don’t be shy about using the lot behind the building.
Christina Nilles
Amazing local outdoor & adventure store! Really good selection of shoes: hiking, trail running, adventure sandals. Also the upstairs has huge clothing discounts on sample size clothing which is great if you are a size small.
jesse james johnson
The co-op was out of snow shoes so I came here as they had a bunch in stock. The young stockist working the floor was very helpful in selecting a pair that would work good for the local trails. Price seemed reasonable for in-person retail.
Michael Brouillette
My Local go to outdoor adventures store Rod and his crew know and love the Great Outdoors and the equipment they sell. I highly recommend them. I bought the Canoe I canoed the Mighty Mississippi with and I bought most of the Gear I use on my Hikes and Adventures on the Triple Crown with at Midwest Mountaineering. The Outdoors Adventures Expo is always a go to event !!
Lauren Myhra
Couldn’t be happier to support a wonderful business that truly cares about (and gives 10% of profits to!) outdoor organizations.
David Fake
Absolutely love this store. The staff are the most knowledgeable of any sporting goods and outdoor retail store and incredibly helpful. I love that they spend the time to educate us, this time on cross country skiing and walk us through the benefits of and pros and cons of different equipment.
Amber Bouret
The store has Great selection and variety.
Staff is friendly but more interested in chatting amongst themselves then assisting customers or answering questions.
Dylan McKellips
Excellent gear selection and knowledgeable staff. Robert was patient and informative, walking me through many details of hiking backpacks and tents. I could tell he knew his stuff, and I appreciate the time he gave us. This is a favorite location of my father's, and is now a favorite of mine.
Ariane Laxo
This is the local hometown version of REI - get on their email list for great discounts and coupons! Love that they have the BWCA gear and maps so we can get ready for our trips without needing an outfitter up north.
Nick Turner
This store is awesome! Great quality equipment, staffed by very knowledgeable individuals, everything you could need for an awesome adventure. They even have fun events to check out! My wife and I went to a smart wool party they had and got a free pair of socks for taking a group hike. We even got a sample of a local brewery that evening. Definitely worth checking out this store, especially if you can make one of their events!
Chris Hendricks
I love this shop. One of the few places you can go anymore where the staff are genuine enthusiasts and want to help you find the right gear. Skip the megastores with employees that don’t care and don’t know. The upstairs bargain area has really good deals and seems to change quite a bit every time I go there. They also have dirt cheap climbing classes in the basement that are awesome for beginners.
HF
Always a good experience whenever I go there. There are many places selling outdoor gears but I like going to this store because the assistants really assist you to get things you need that fits you, be it fitting or budget out whatever, instead of just selling stuff. They are very knowledgeable too.
Cas
I love this store! I’ve purchased quite a few pieces of my main hiking set up here, and the staff are all extraordinarily helpful and professional in assisting a customer with any questions. They have a vast selection of items for your average backpacker, and also many ultralight options for more serious hikers.
Pete Money
Best outdoors store I've ever been to. Fantastic gear at competitive prices. Staff are very knowledgeable and passionate; just ask them and you'll get everything you need to know. Classes and demonstrations are on point and generally free. Can't ask for more.
T Shaw
Amazingly helpful staff that was super knowledgeable. Alot of great gear, definetly worth the stop!
Anna
Absolutely amazing customer service. The staff are really knowledgeable and will spend a lot of time helping you pick out the right products. I love shopping here and the deals at thrifty outfitters are wonderful.
Mia Bremer
Just had a terrific experience buying snowshoes. The staff were very patient and knowledgeable about their products. They made it clear they wanted to help me get the right shoes for my particular needs. And we found a pair that does just that.
Jonathan Ringdahl
The staff here are knowledgeable and friendly. The selection is great. It's a great store. Check out the Outdoor Adventure Expo. It's twice a year in April and November.
I bought a Western Mountaineering sleeping bag. Megan, who helped me, was great with her insights. Another awesome visit. Thanks Midwest Mountaineering!
Shotgun Mama
A rare jem of a store! We went looking for hiking boots for a 12 day backpacking hike in New Mexico. Izzy was extremely knowledgeable and fantastic with my 14 year old son. She worked with him through 4 or 5 pairs until we found ones he liked. We will definitely be back. It was well worth the 45 minute drive.
Kate L
One of my favorite outdoor gear shops. Great variety of top quality brands, excellent customer service, and plenty of community events (yoga, rock climbing, movie fests, pints + a featured brand). I can find just about anything I need here for outdoor adventures. Plus, the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help out. Sure, the clothing tends to be on the pricy side, but it's quality stuff and Midwest has a ton of sales and coupons, if you're on their email list.
Janet Hochule
Really special store for outdoor sports and activities. My partner is in to white water kayaking and they have everything you need and need to replace at Midwest. We also love the expo and how they go into the community. Amazing clothes and shoes!!! And it's huge! So fun just to walk down all the aisles even though we only came for noseplugs!
Michael Yates
Cool place with nice gear and good service. I know it's tough to find in general but it always breaks my heart to go to places like this and there's no clothing whatsoever for larger guys. Yeah I'm fat but it doesn't stop me from doing paddle and mountain sports. Not a big deal for most people but if you're over XL you're not getting any clothes here.
Ryan heesch
Honestly I’m over this place. Yes, it’s great to have a local shop to do your shopping at, but I’m tired of consistently paying 15-30% more for items that I could order from the actual company. I’m not talking about going to REI here. I mean listed MSRP. From common to speciality items. It’s hit or miss which really affects my confidence in shopping here. I wish I could trust that I was getting a fair shake on pricing. Lame.
Maia Carter
Midwest Mountaineering is a beautiful, caring company and a staple of the Twin Cities. Everyone who works there is genuine, jelpful, and crazy knowledgeable. The company and its owner really care about the community as well. They put on a ton of events, host yoga, and give back. I could gush and gush about how wonderful this business is. Oh, and they have literally anything you would need. Definitely a must for anyone in the market for any outdoor gear. Support this awesome business!
Tyler Collins
This place has a great selection and I always seem to find all the obscure items I'm hunting. I primarily purchase camping gear/accessories. They have a nice selection of backpacking meals and everything you might want for a trip into the wilderness.
Michael Brouillette
They Know the Great Outdoors !! And the Owner and Staff know and use what They Sell !!
Devon Carlson
Great selection for an independent outdoor store.
Gregory Tullo
Where has this place been all my life?! Great selection with a discount section full of epic deals on high quality gear.
Mike Patrick (MetlOtter)
They have a great selection and very friendly and helpful staff. If you get on the mailing list, they regularly send coupons for great deals.
Aaron N
If you're into anything outdoors, they'll have it. Check up on there events too, as they have a monthly get together and have great give away prizes!
Randolph Dorr
Cool my Hat nice n warm yes it’s getting Brrrrr stay warm MWM HATS MITTENS MASKS BE ON TOP OF THE COLD TOASTY WARM EVEN A MOUNTAIN lol
Ray Peterson
The women and men who work here are very knowledgeable. About all the equipment they sell here. They are all very friendly.
Jeana T
Best outdoor store in the Twin Cities area. Staff is full of experts in each category that are always willing to help. Thrift upstairs always has outstanding deals and often sales on the 1st floor as well.
Zakk
I have yet to have a bad experience while shopping here. I drive two hours every time because I know when I walk through those doors all my questions will be answered. I purchased my first “big boy” kayak from them early in the season and they gave me a discount on a paddle as well. I’ve called on several occasions with just general questions not pertaining to purchasing anything and was always helped out. Recently I brought my other kayak in for repair and they fixed it free of charge in about an hour. The prices may be “high” but so is the quality of the products they sell. You’re not getting Ozark Trail products from Walmart. I’m a firm believer in shopping locally. I’d rather drive two hours and spend an extra couple bucks here than stop at one of the REI’s I pass on my way there. If you need a kayak, or have any questions in general I strongly recommend giving them a call or stopping in.
Sean Garey
All there staff is great and very knowledgable. The Thrifty Outfitters is always worth a walk through. Kinda like shopping at Target, if you can leave spending under $100 you are lucky, but the gear is always well worth it. Sign up, and get there emails, this is where the coupons are, and letting you know when they offer free drinks and treats sponsored by vendors. Very similar to REI.
Narf Cisel
Really good outdoor store. Get on coupon list, look for specials or use thrifty outfitters upstairs to get bet prices. Expos twice a year are great. Lots of presentations, info, some deals. They host lots of other events there also. Thrifty Outfitters is also a great place to get gear repaired.
Adam Blom
Staff was friendly and its a cool shop. I went in looking for a fishing kayak. They are low on stock but so is everybody. I'd definitely go back for outdoor gear!
Alex Pahl
Decided to visit this store after hearing great things about their customer service and inventory of stuff they stock. I showed up during an expo that was going on and it was a madhouse, but after talking with a gentleman about needing some climbing shoes for people with wide feet, he didn't even hesitate and went and found three pairs he thought would work. After finding a pair the felt good, he let me try them out on their bouldering cave to see how they preformed. Overall a very plesent experience and I will be coming back for future climbing needs.
Carrie McLarnon
Amazing place with the best staff!! Always have amazing deals and great community events. The staff are all experienced and super helpful. Small bouldering and dry tooling cave below the shop which is free to use after signing in. Midwest Mountaineering is the best place to go to for your outdoor gear!!
Kevin Rowell
A great locally owned store with personal service and a great selection. Prices are comparable to other similar chains but here your dollar makes a difference. Great employees and they sponsor really fun events. Parking is easy (there is a ramp just around the corner) and it's just a fun place to be. Skip one visit to REI and come experience Midwest Mountaineering!
Anne Ulrich
Overall, good store--great selection and glad they're able to sell outdoor gear when it's needed most. Prices a little high, though I was able to find most of what I was looking for in a price range I found reasonable.
Timothy Kraus
Great independent retailer. Admittedly, most of their apparel is too rich for my blood. I have, however, made several bigger gear purchases here (insulated hiking books, lightweight cooking systems, etc.) and have been very pleased with their selection, events and customer service.
Jonathan Persgarden
Very good store! They have all the outdoor stuff that I can imagine and to reasonable prices. The staff was also really helpful and friendly.
Although the best part must be that they have an indoor climbing cave that you can use for free 😄 …
Mando Monica
Best place for hiking and climbing gear in the Twin Cities. Knowledgeable staff and they have a good selection of high quality gear to suit novices through to experts. Recently I was looking for ice climbing boots and other ice climbing items. Not much of anything to be found at REI. Midwest had what I need. Lots of kayaking and cross country ski gear. Very well trained staff for boot fittings, and a fit guarantee to back up their recommendations. Festivals and outdoor clinics are always good. I have been a happy customer for over 23 years.
Brandon Johnston
Expert advise on quality products. I was looking to upgrade my son's backpack. The sales consultant had extensive knowledge of multiple product lines. He spent a lot of time with us fitting my son with the right pack. There is no replacement for experienced advise.
Jessica Wood
Great looking store. They had kayaks, canoes, camping, climbing gear and tons of clothes. 3 stories if you count were i saw the climbing wall. My only disappointment is that not one employee checked on me or asked if i was looking for something in particular.
Dorwatha Woods
Though a tad pricey, I love this store and I do feel that you get excellent value for the dollars you spend-which is most important! If you are one that loves the outdoor life including hiking, backpacking, kayaking, camping, etc. this is the store for you. They have some serious equipment for every outdoor scenario. You can even get a life vest for your doggie! It is absolutely great! Here is a pic of the great hot/cold beverage insulated bottle and the lightweight backpack that I purchased for a small fortune but again, durable, and perfect for me and my activities.
Jeni Margules
I could not be more impressed with friendliness, approachability and general knowledge of the employees in this store. I've been 4 times in the past 1.5 weeks trying to understand what I wanted in a new canoe as a novice. I have had a total of about 3 hours worth of expertise just given to me because I was asking questions. I feel like Midwest Mountaineering has my back, is not trying to up-sell me or make me feel guilty if I just stop in to ask questions, and are always incredibly helpful. Would absolutely recommend.
Audrey Sheffield
Great local outdoor store! Great, knowledgeable staff who've been everywhere and have experience to advise the novice outdoor folk to the expert. Sometimes selection is limited, but generally have everything you need. You can even get gear repaired at Thrifty Outfitters upstairs.
Erik Laing
Midwest has for many years been the outdoor store for the passionate outdoors enthusiast, bit that's not to say they are for elitists. Great for newbies too as the staff is knowledgeable on their own areas as well as others. Thrifty outfitters also provides great repairs at a good value for many gear items.
Steven Meads
A little bit pricey but the customer service is worth it. Great selection of all kinds of outdoor gear. We've been going there for years and always go upstairs to Thrifty Outfitters to check it out as well.
Riley Lamers
Just an amazing local business. If you're new in town and love the outdoors they host a bunch of events that can help you connect with the local communities. I love their pint nights and expos. Their staff is friendly and experienced. You can also get some great deals in their Thrifty Outfitters upstairs.
Troy H
The selection here is really good andthe prices are fair. I'd say they're definitely in line with large chain stores and while I love REI I got the impression this place beat them on price for a number of comparable or identical items. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The Saturday classes are the best vague you're gonna find.
Brandon Holland
Best selection, best employees, somewhat expensive but they are selling high end goods so that's expected. The loft upstairs sells more reasonably priced last year's designs options. I really like everything this business does for their customers and the community, they are the opitomy of how a local business should be run. Kudos to them on their yearly expo & canoe auction, I very much enjoy it.
Scott Dorn
Ben was SUPER helpful with sharing his knowledge about the various camping items Ithat I needed!!! Great store, and you can park in the rear lot - the store will validate your parking.
Flashy Love
If you’re looking for any kind of camping equipment this place is going to has it I went to a few places before hand and had no luck then decided to drive a little bit out end it was so worth the drive. They had everything that we need coolers of all kinds of sizes and a really cool tent that I bought their prices may be a little bit higher but the quality of things that they have is really great she also had said that there return policy was really good also this is a must try place I was so pleased with this store and had a lot of fun shopping there
Samuel Wagner
Spendy...but they do have a great selection of everything you'd want for camping/hiking/outdoors quality gear! Good selection of footwear, and clearance section great. Don't forget to check out upstairs for used stuff/clearance racks!
Ben Bowman
This store is great! They've got great outdoor gear, and much of it is usually on sale. The employees are really helpful and not condescending . Sometimes they even have free beer!
Dave L.
Sending my love out to Midwest Mountaineering. I lived on the West Bank 1984-1988 while a student at the U of M. Bought a North Face parka here to keep from freezing during the winter of my freshman year, 1984-85. This past October 2019, a full 35 years later, I gave the jacket a good wash and bequeathed it to my son, who is living in Philadelphia. The jacket is a bit faded from many years of hard winter use, but otherwise it is as solidly constructed (and warm) today as it was the day I bought it. Bonus: it now has "retro" charm thanks to a timeless cut and style. Thank you to all at Midwest Mountaineering for consistently providing excellent service and products of outstanding quality and style at a fair price - you are a Minneapolis treasure.
Josephine Walker
I go climbing here usually at least twice a week because their bouldering wall is free and pretty awesome (and small meaning little to no people 😊). The rest of the place is great- nice outdoor gear and a large variety of beanies and hammocks. Very friendly staff and it feels all warm and cozy! There is also a super sweet dog named Cinnamon (Cinna for short) who hangs around while her owner helps customers.
Andrew Meggs
This place is not only so cool, but also a Minneapolis institution! You're going to get better service than at an REI, and you'll feel super hip just by walking in the door! Great selection, great feel, I would definitely recommend stopping by and checking things out. Even if you don't like the outdoors, you can look like you do!
Matt Russell
Staff was amazing! Super knowledgeable and friendly. Store is bigger than you'd think when you first approach and the upstairs has absolute killer deals on all sorts of gear.
Karin Crawford
Really awesome, helpful team. We rented canoes to enjoy one of the lakes nearby, and they were very helpful in figuring out how to put the canoes on top of our rental car. They even had the pads to protect the car and all the straps and the paddles and flotation devices were included. They put the canoes on the car and helped us take them off when we got back. Definitely recommend using them
Simen L Johansen
Employees are nice and welcoming.
I bought climbing shoes and chalk, and the price was very reasonable. The climbing shoe was 139 while amazon was 129, but I got a day pass to MBP which costs 15 dollars. You also get yo try the shoes you buy and have them in your hand after purchase.
It was worth it big time. The store is huge and has alot of different outdoor things
S M
Came here for the employee tent sale. Pretty disappointing but always fun to explore my old stomping grounds. It was really busy and employees did a good job herding folks around and helping.
Colin
Best store for hiking stuff in the Twin Cities. The staff is super knowledgeable and helpful, as well. Thrifty Outfitters, upstairs, has a good selection of marked down clothing and gear as well. They also do repairs.
Clark Bremer
Great service, great selection of high quality products. It's not a big box store, but they still have a huge amount of gear. A knowledgeable staff. Great experience.
Danielle Novack
I’ve been pleased every time I’ve come here. I have attended Diva Night, popped in to grab some gear, received friendly service when looking for something or exchanging a gift, and wonderful assistance in the free bouldering gym in the basement. I love this hidden gem in Minneapolis, if you are an outdoorsy person this store is for you!
Papyrus Apollo
They have great products, and I'm sure customer service had the best intentions. But I didn't like being so heavily gender while I was there. They tried to sell bags by gender and I don't consider that an effective approach. I felt very uncomfortable, and the person that they tried to serve after me was also very uncomfortable when they try to give someone tied up in aggressive masculinity a bag with s straps selling it was a "women's" bag.
Ashley Oswald
Amazing first experience. I found a winter jacket at Thrifty Outfitters, but right before checking out realized the hood clips were missing. The manager Mark took a look, and offered to deduct the cost of repair from the jacket. He was very easy to talk with, and incredibly fair. Top notch customer service. Then, since my boyfriend and I were first time customers, he offered us the 20% off coupon that had come through everyone else's emails that week. So overall, I walked away with a never worn $600 skiing jacket for $190. AND, to top it off, there was hot cider by the door with a list of community outdoorsy classes. We will definitely be back. Thanks so much for a great experience.
Daniel Lang
In short this place is a jack of all trades. Great selection in camping and outerwear. Smaller climbing area which is understandable given the location. They organize everything by size which is great because you'll never find something you like in the wrong size.
Josh Nielsen
This place is wonderful. The staff are super helpful, the bargain cave upstairs has some of the best deals around for top name winter gear brands. Marmot, Patagonia, Salomon to name a few
Andrew Smeby
We just rented paddle boards from them. They were crazy helpful getting us loaded up, and their prices were the best in the cities.
It's definitely the best place for new outdoor gear, but great for rentals too.
Dick Kacheroski
This is a place i seek out when i need new gear. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. This visit I picked up some trail runners to replace a 10 year old pair and was guided nicely by the shoe person. Highly recommend
Dan Hedgecock
One of the top 3 outdoor shops I have been in my entire life. Huge selection and more importantly a staff of outdoor enthusiasts that knows what they are talking about. These guys get two thumbs up! I just wish I had more money to spend there on all the sweet gear!
Scott Elkins
A great, locally owned outdoor store. Top quality gear, like Western Mountaineering sleeping bags and Patagonia clothing. Climbing, camping, biking, skiing, water sports, backpacking - they're all covered. The staff are serious outdoors buffs and super knowledgeable. Twice a year festivals with store wide discounts, talks and demos.
Chris Vann
A great store with an amazing selection.I plan on stopping in every trip to Minneapolis.
Frank Haege
Amazing store and service. The hipster points this place earns are off the chart. Cool location sweet gear, free coffee, some discount stuff upstairs attached bike shop. You could spend half a day exploring this place. The free indoor climbing cave is one of Minnesota's best kept secrets.
Inga Schierkolk
Midwest mountaineering is an amazing store full of amazing people who are passionate about the outdoors and if you don't like being outdoors before coming, you will leave having your 10 day hiking trip planned and stocked up for. Can be a little pricey but they do have sales.
Snow Farmer
The staff here is kind and knowledgeable. Prices are comparable to most retailers like REI. I’d say the staff is more knowledgeable than REI and have been kinder and willing to spend time properly explaining equipment and use.
I recommend joining their newsletter as they often have great deals posted there.
Derick Hildebrandt
Shopping at this store was honestly a treat! The store is huge, with a great selection of all things outdoor, I came to look at winter hats, and ended up spending almost an hour looking at everything else they had to offer. Staff was super friendly and helpful as well.
Eric Buck
Great local outdoors store with tons of water sports options, camping, hiking, rock climbing, and helpful staff. We'll be back!
Manas Minglani
The staff is really supportive and they have a huge collection of gear. They also have a thrift something section where they have a huge collection of clothing and equipment at reduced price. This stuff is brand new just at a discounted price. They also carry local brands! Will return to this place.
Kristal Hudson
Amazing local outdoor supplies. 1st floor are all full price name brand merchandise. 2nd floor is more thrifty. The only thing that sucked was that the thrifty store only had marked down small and medium sizes. Very very limited selection for L-XL sizes.
Samuel Gunvalson
Great store with helpful staff, amazing events all the times. Great "thrift" store upstairs with 50% off deals of averaged sized things. Like with anything good, it's expensive. But it'll last.
Alena Stewart
Fantastic selection of quality gear, boats, clothes, etc. The staff are always friendly, helpful & knowledgeable. I love shopping here knowing that it's a local business that gives back to outdoor & environmental causes.
Daniel Kunkler
This store has lots of high quality clothes, camping, skiing, shoes, climbing products and more, and a very knowledgeable staff. They also have a discounted section upstairs. Only complaint really is they're pretty expensive.
Melissa Clawson (Personal)
The bouldering wall downstairs is a lot of fun! They have a shoe rental program and if you use it so many times then you get a discount on rock climbing shoes! Staff is very knowledgeable and the classes are well worth the time.
Benjamin Beltrame
Great knowledge and friendly staff that all always willing to spend as much time as I need helping me. Every time I come here, the employees are trying to help me find the best product for ME and my budget, instead of trying to convince me to buy something more expensive. 11/10 would recommend
Travis Anderson
Best place for buying outdoor gear in the Twin Cities. A good-sized store with great selection and amazingly helpful and knowledgeable staff. Be sure to sign up for their email mailing list for discounts and news about their classes and other special events.
Matt Sturgeon
Shop local. Prices for new items are close to what you find online, but having a store with items in stock and make or break weekend fun times.
The thrifty outfitters is amazing too when they move items up to clear them out. Prices that make internet sales look ridiculous.
David Lossing
Been coming here since I was a kid, a great place for outdoor gear. I travel with the N.P.S. all over the U.S. and A.K., but this store is close to home base and supplies me with all the excellent advice and gear I need. The second floor repair/second hand shop has helped mend everything from skiis to backpacks to stoves too.
Zach B
My favorite place to shop. Think of it as a family owned REI, except better. The staff are all friendly and very knowledgeable. I have been going here for clothes for over 8 years, and don't plan to stop.
Jim Young
Great outdoor store that for generations has been helping equip people so they can get outside and enjoy our great country!
Karissa Stotts
Great service all around. We left Rei because of discrimination from the salesman and midwest took care of us. We dropped almost 1000 dollars. Well never go to Rei again. From a trans Latinx here. Too many old white trumpets that work at rei. You will find a better skilled and woke employee at midwest.
Brittani Lamb
Awesome local outdoors shop. I love being able to support a local place. They often have great deals and coupons in addition to special sales and events. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful.
Bridget Lee
Always so friendly and helpful - I love visiting MWM! I spent about an hour trying on different climbing shoes and trying them out in their bouldering cave and didn't feel rushed at all.
The comped parking makes it easy in and out which is rare in that area and I love that I can bring my dog in with me!
Make sure you sign up for their email list to stay on top of new arrivals and great coupons!
Sam Toberman
Fantastic local store! I love basically everything about it, except the difficult parking. They do validate, but I missed the turn and had to go around the whole block to get back to where the lot entrance is.
Make sure to go upstairs to check out the additional deals!
Robert Lee
I always want to stop and go in every time I go past. Sign up for the email list for constant giveaways and great deals. All the best products and plenty of selection. Keep an eye out for the Outdoor Adventure Expo in the spring and fall!
Michael Johnson
They offer hikes for free socks. We walked near the river and the University of Minnesota. The walk was about 3 miles. I thought it would be a leisurely stroll. Turns out these people walk way to fast for everyone. Quite a few if us were left behind while the crowd ahead was speedwalking. I definitely thought I would get some summer socks but they are very thick winter wool. Anyways if you decide to go walk fast. Upstairs are where you can find hopefully something you can afford.
Scott Wozniak
Friendly and helpful staff, huge selection of outdoor gear and supplies. Recommended for those interested in outdoor sports, hiking, camping, winter sports, etc.
Jeff Clegg
These guys know their stuff and went out of their way to help me get the right climbing shoes then later a better harness for sport climbing. Prices are average but I truly appreciate the expert advice which saves time and frustration down the road.
Glenn Brown
Always solid staff that will drop knowledge on ya if ya choose to ask. They will let ya be if you need that as well. Some wonderful mix of products that are not main stream but need a spot light and will last you a life time of hard use. Bargins to find. Free parking as well. It's pretty much a win win in my world.
Henry Brooks (Henry Brooks)
Great place. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff, competitive prices, and wide selection of high quality gear. So glad that I found this place. Tis a hidden gem.
James VanDriska
I have yet to even step in the store and my overall experience has been excellent. I've been doing research about purchasing a Jackson brand kayak in a specific color and the team at MWM has done everything in their power to get me what I want. They didnt have it in stock and they are making it happen, and fast too!!
Their over the phone customer service is very responsive, courteous, and just down right friendly. I will be doing business during my pickup and will definitely be a future customer.
Update: Kayak I ordered didnt come through (due to shipping problems) but MWM was overly compensating and hooked me up. Grabbed some gear and had a pleasant visit. 10/10 will go back.
Brandon Link
Fantastic hiking, canoeing, camping, and clothing supplies. They also stock a wide variety of hults bruk and grandfors bruks axes and hatchets. Great store!
Martin Asao
Midwest is one of the best outdoor retailers in the Midwest. They have a solid selection of outdoor clothing and backpacking equipment. They frequently send out couples and deals in their newsletter. Thrifty outfitters (upstairs) is one if the best values and best kept secrets in the outdoor retail world.
Lance Spicher
Excellent selection at better prices than other outfitters, and the staff are amazing to a person.
Chris Cornish
Lots of great clothing and equipment. Anything you need for camping/hiking/etc you can find there. Pint nights are the best! You can get free beer and a cup and find great deals. Upstairs is the best area for deals!
Michael Bishop
Great selection of items with helpful staff. They know a lot about the products since they are outdoors people as well. If they don't know, they will be honest about it. Much respect for the humility.
Raina
Like REI but local and just way better. I wish I could give them more stars! They fixed my tent! $25 to fix instead of buying a new one for $300+? This is the only place I know of that can do that! The FREE bouldering cave is great and the staff really know the places in the Midwest to go for an outdoor adventure.
Bruce Morris
Very helpful staff on picking out a backpack.
Good variety of items.
Othniel
This outdoor store has the two ingredients necessary for a great store: A full spectrum of high quality products and a staff thoroughly informed in and passionate about each high quality products. No shoddy retail found here.
George Rosar
I've been shopping at Midwest mountaineering for 46 years now. I bought my first backpack there and just bought a new one today. They always have great sales.
Tom Lutes
Really interesting place becuase it's not just a store. Good place to spend some time browsing, or you can take them up on classes available. Personally, I enjoy the bouldering cave best.
Sacia Marquardt
Great local gear for hiking, biking, paddling, skiing etc. Staff is always helpful and friendly. They sponsor/host a lot of fun events and classes.
Head upstairs if you like to bargain shop.
Jess Ehm
Very wide selection of a multitude of outdoor gear. Just stopped in to take a look. Wasn't planning on making any purchases. Overall, kind of overwhelming with all the product that is crammed into the store, but I'd imagine they'd have anything you need for camping to biking.
Raymond Swingley
First started going there in the 1980s they did then and they do now possess everything I need in the way of outdoor equipment. A polite, friendly, helpful Steff made we almost too comfortable I almost never got out of there. I felt as if I was among friends. Which I indeed was.
Pam Huber
My brother couldn't wait to show me this store yesterday while i was still visiting in Mpls. A great way to spend the first day of snow looking at anything and everything for the outdoors. Great quality and awesome reduced prices.
Olivia Tusa
Offers the combination of great products and knowledgeable and kind staff that will go the distance to help their customers. Best outdoor store in minnesota!
Jesse Olson
Best outdoors store in town! Been going here for many years. Awesome staff! I know people that come from all around the midwest to shop here.
Alexander Halaszyn
Tucked right into the edge of downtown Minneapolis, Midwest Mountaineering is a fantastic store. They offer classes and connections to events, a wide variety of quality brands, discounts and special offers, and even a bouldering cave in their basement. Check this place out if you're in the area
Bhushan M
Lot of varieties available in the sports segment. Thought the prices seemed higher in comparison to the price at the individual outlets. If you are looking for something specific and sports related, this is definitely the place to go.
Michelle Dobbratz
Great selection, friendly and knowledgeable staff, free parking (they validate the lot behind them), and good selection. Check out Thrify Outfitters upstairs for deals, especially if you are a sample size!
April Tullero
Excellent store for hiking gear with a bigger selection than I would have previously thought. I got a nice pair of merrell moab boots for around $60 and they have lasted me for months.
Madeline Brown
Wonderful people, didn’t jump on you as soon as you came into the store as many retailers do. Took my time and walked around but easy to find and talk to the employees when I needed advice or had questions.
Mike Stevens
Oldie and still goodie. Great place to spend time if youre into outdoor gear. But somethings lost when somethings gained. Forty plus years ago this began as a dirt bag climbing store in a most unlikely location. Miss that place. Miss that time of my life when all we wanted to do was climb.
Holly Hoffmaster
I just was there and they were having an event, indoor and outdoor, and everything was on sale! Picked up a really good pair of hiking shoes and socks. They even had a raffle, fingers crossed I win!
Jordan Herrman
Not often you find this type of store in the city. Great selection of cross country skiing, camping, canoeing, and hiking equipment. The helpful staff make this place one of a kind.
Diane Wakefield
This is the place. You need help, have questions...these are the people to ask. Selection is excellent and prices are what you would expect-you get what you pay for...AnD if you’re really bargain hunting, just go upstairs where everything is marked down. ♥️♥️♥️
Dave Gus
This is THE place for the highest level of knowledge and experience in outdoor adventure! I've been a whitewater kayaker for more than 30 years and bought my first, second, third...(you get the idea) boats, paddles, life jackets, helmets etc. from Midwest. When you're beginning a new sport and worry you'll regret your purchase come here. I appreciate their co-op competitor from Seattle as much the next guy but what "processed cheese food" (read Velveeta) is to aged cheddar from Wisconsin is "Seattle" to Midwest. They both have their place but when your butt is on the line you should trust the experience of the experts at Midwest Mountaineering.
Eli Hemmila
Who needs the size and bustle of the big-name chains? While Midwest Mountaineering may be small, it's more carefully-curated and generally a tough place to beat. Support your local businesses and check this joint out!
Stacie Zaffke
Fun store! I love their selection and the sale racks in the upstairs part of the store. The employees seem knowledge and engaging
Demetrius Sass
Staff is always super knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have. When I say knowledgeable, they know more than just the products, they frequently have a deep understanding of the activities. Quality place.
Josh Huhmann
I love going here, but I can't fathom paying the prices for most things. That said, sometimes the ability to try it on makes it worth the price. Thrifty outfitters upstairs is generally 30℅ cheaper, while still expensive, has its hidden gems.
Jim Rue
Great service. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Everyone seems to have first hand experience with the products they are selling.
Adam Forbes
I grew up on the south where southern hospitality is a huge thing, and I have never in my life been treated so well as a customer. They are incredibly knowledgable and even more kind. I will be a customer for life.
J M
Knowledgable staff, and that's what counts. If your heading on a serious trip, this is the place to shop. Prices are retail+, but they have good inventory/size selection.
Scott Elling
Love this place shopping there for 40 years f I r outdoor equipment, backpacking and kayaking gear
Z Makila
Everyone who works here is so friendly and helpful! There are wonderful weekly deals so I recommend getting on their email list. A cashier will help you get signed up, it's free!

Such wonderful and knowledgeable staff. That's in top of the awesome selection of outdooy gear. Add Thrifty to the mix and you have a trifecta!
Valiant Gordon
I hiked all over the U.S.and Middle East.Ive served in the Armed Forces. Now that I'm retired for 12 years I've been traveling around North America. I'm an old school guy enjoying new school equipment.M mountaineering allways has the latest and greatest gear coming onto the market with knowledgeable staff who inform you with out the sales pressure I've got at other outfiters. (Sorry R E I i don't like being rushed when I'm making shopping decisions). They have a better selection and feel like REAL FRIENDS. I like the classes. Sometimes I'm not busy and just go in to look and get a cup of coffee and end up buying something new on the market I wasn't even aware was out there. Tnx Valiant Gordon From Alaska.......
Landan Bouten
Hidden Gem, I have purchased trip specific gear multiple times, the staff is able to really understand needs and set you up with confidence as well as quality products.
Ben MacKinney
It's a little on the pricey side but is worth it to talk to cool people that actually care about what they do. They also are a really important community organisation. Love the free rock climbing in the basement! Thanks
Brandon imsdahl

Glenn Hamilton
Stopped in to see if I could get a pair of replacement hand tethers for my outdated Leki walking sticks. Although my old style wasn't carried anymore, they were able to find a box of old(unsold) and mismatched ones in the basement. I was able to find a pair that worked for me and they just let me have them, no cost! Now that is what I call customer service! You can bet I will be coming here first for my next outdoor/camping need. Way to go Midwest Mountaineering!
Isaac Braun
Highly recommend this store for their in-depth knowledge of outdoor gear and enthusiastic experience at the store. They will surely get you amped to be outdoors.
Jeff Pilgrim
Great selection of great gear. The place to go in Minnesota. 5 stars when traffic permits. Don't miss the spring and fall expos.
John
Incredible store w quality gear from all over the world. It's the 7th annual Outdoor Expo so highly recommend it
MICK BARRETTO
Tried to arrange a canoe rental. Required the canoe by 9:00am for an event, however they opened at that time so I couldn't pick up that day. Said I'd pick it up as late as necessary the previous day so they wouldn't lose any revenue. They were unwilling to work with me, saying I needed to pay for 2 days, regardless.
They were obviously just out for extra cash and didn't want to assist people who wanted to do a sport they are in business for. I was very disappointed.
Josh Wiczek
Awesome place to go for outdoor gear! Really neat store that has almost everything you will need for your outdoor adventures.
Alex Biedny
Nice place that has all the outdoor gear you could ever want. Good prices, especially when items go on sale.
