I visited the Outdoor Gear Exchange today and was impressed with the wide selection of beer they had. The upstairs has the latest and greatest but the basement has their consignment shop. It is filled with past seasons gear at discounted prices. Additionally they have 50-70% sections which had a variety of items at super discounted prices. Everything was pretty well organized I thought which made it easy to find what I was looking for! Definitely check it out if you’re in the area and in need of a specific outdoor item

Great store, lots to see, really fantastic sale racks and consignment downstairs. Employees are very helpful but not intrusive, which I really appreciate. Recently used their bike service shop for the first time and it was a great experience— good pricing, fast turnaround time, friendly and engaging interactions with multiple team members. I did research online before visiting and I was looking for a particular shoe/brand. With so many stores that offer a variety of merchandise you get there and it’s on the web but the store doesn’t have the style or your size and there’s maybe one beleaguered employee who tries to help but doesn’t have experience with the options available. The shoe section at OGE was organized, with a great selection, and the staff was surprisingly knowledgeable. Nate greeted me, listened, found a handful of size options since the brand was new to me, and made a coworker aware of what I was interested in as well. I walk for a living and the right shoes are important to me. I left with exactly what I needed, and recommendations for my winter footwear needs, too. Great service. I’m sold and I’ll definitely be back.

I called ahead to see if they have the specific item I needed. The hold music was the best I've ever heard! They didn't have exactly what I was looking for but they have something that works. I'm heading to the store soon to pick it up. Unfortunately, when I got there what I needed either wasn't in stock or it was hidden in thier computer system. But I was helped and listened to by two wonderful employees. Definitely spend your money there they have a wonderful customer experience!

Excellent outdoor gear store. There were many quality brands here. I stopped in since I had heard a lot of good about them but currently don't have any need to buy gear. There was everything you could need to go backpacking, which is where my outdoor expertise is. Day packs, 50L+ for multiple days and many quality big brand and small companies, tents for front or back county, all sorts of shoes and boots, sleeping bags, pads, all the clothes you would need, and more. There is also an enormous winter sports section and bike selection. Essentially, if you've ever been to an REI, you could expect that here. If you're a Long Trail thru hiker and need something replaced, if you can get a ride from the trail this would be a worthy stop. While you're in town there's also a ton of places to eat and stay as well. May as well enjoy the detour!

I had a wonderful experience getting a new bike helmet at the Outdoor Gear Exchange on Church Street in Burlington. I found the staff member who helped me incredibly knowledgeable, taking time to explain the choices and answer my questions with a thoughtfulness I appreciated deeply. I also valued that this staff member seemed to just love their job. I recommend this business highly to our community and beyond, even if you are not an experienced outdoor person. (In my case, I enjoy recreational biking and hadn't bought a new helmet for way-too-many years.)

I was on a last minute stop to travel el camino de Santiago. I still didn’t have my pack because every store in Boise was out of what I needed. Chris helped give me several options and was very patient with my newb-ness. I ended up buying a cheaper Gregory pack that fit me better than the newer packs. Chris also talked me out of an expensive triple layer rain coat and suggested something more appropriate for my hot summer trek. This place is just great.

Absolutely amazing experience. Came in for what I thought was just some minor bicycle adjustments, but the bike tech that helped me had slaved away at my bike for at least 45 minutes and only charged me $10. The bicycle service staff are so friendly and helpful- they truly go the extra mile.

We could have spent more than an hr in the consignment section (basement) but our parking was going to expire. Great for the whole family— kids, too! Lots of great outdoor gear. Spotted some nice treasures - vintage Patagonia fleeces, caving headlamps and even approach shoes!

Great experience today with the guys in the bike department. I've been looking hard at gravel/road bikes and am a pretty short woman, so finding things in stock in a good fit is hard. They were super helpful helping me test ride a BMC. Lots of useful information and discussion, and they swapped to a shorter stem for me to try also when I realized the reach was too far. They were great when I realized it probably wasn't the bike for me- not pushy at all, just encouraged me to wait for the right bike and the right fit. Very much appreciate their assistance!

One of the biggest independent outdoor gear stores I've ever been to. They have everything you'd expect at a chain like REI, except with a local flair and way more brands it seems. Their consigning area in the basement is huge! They also fix bikes and ski gear, as well as offer rentals. I rented a gravel bike for an affordable price and put it through it's paces. It performed flawlessly for ~60 miles in 24 hours and the rental process was extremely smooth. Would recommend stopping in here if you need a rental for a day or two but don't just want a city cruiser.

The store is incredible, the consignment basement is not to be missed. A true treasure for all of New England! Their website, however, is really terrible and in need of an upgrade. It's so difficult to search for anything. Fingers crossed they redo it at some point.

Not for older bikes While the retail store is fantastic their bike shop is mainly for new road and mountain bikes. I have an old bike with old school shifters (photo, not mine but same model) and the minute I left the store following my tune up the shifter ripped the wire out. Went back, they fixed it for no charge. But then less than a week later same issue. I fixed it with a friend at that point. Also they forgot to put caps on my new tires I bought from them. If you have a modern bike I bet you’ll have better luck but older bikes should probably stick to old spokes home

Good crew in this store - lots of motivated staff to help you with questions about anything. I was a bit surprised at how some products were a bit disorganized on their shelves but I was able to dig around and find what I wanted. Will come again just make sure you have time to look around, etc.

SELECTION great selection of climbing gear, you can really find anything you need. there are a lot of good bags for bouldering, climbing, and even school. the jackets are very nice, especially in the consignment section. there are shoes for hiking, running, and climbing. there is even a large selection of bikes. there is a ton of camping gear and it is all very high quality and comes from trusted brands. -you will probably get what you are looking for STAFF the staff are friendly and very helpful, and the store is child and dog friendly. they are knowledgeable and polite. -great staff BATHROOMS there are two bathrooms and they are very clean and gender neutral. -great bathrooms

I needed new cross country poles and boots BUT ended up buying new skis and bindings. (my gear was 24 yrs old) The salesperson (Seth) was so helpful! We did the whole purchase over the phone. The recommendations were fabulous and i was so thrilled with my gear that i bought my boyfriend a package as well. SO stoked for the next snow fall so we can enjoy our new upgrades together! MASSIVE selection if high quality and in comparison to other places cheap items. The staff are friendly and incredibly helpful and cater to everything you need when shopping. The store has anything and everything you could need for any trip in the outdoors, and the fact that a lot of the items are on a return basis means that things tend to be cheaper. But that doesn't mean that it's worse quality. Most of if not all my outdoor activity items come from here, which includes skiing, backpacking, camping, hiking, biking, swimming and more, not including things like my regular winter coat. Highly recommend and if you are into the outdoors, then you need to get into this store.

If I could give OGE 6 stars I would! The quality of their products is high and the staff work really hard to provide excellent service each and every time. Recently, I purchased a pair of Topo Terraventure 2 running shoes for general trail/all around running. The sales folks were super helpful and were very knowledgeable. They talked me through my options and asked lots of great questions to narrow things down. The shoes I purchased ended up being so good, I bought a second pair and I've since gotten even more into running! I liked that the sales folks are not pushy and they do participate in the sports/use the products sold. Whenever someone from out-of-town visits Burlington, a trip to OGE is almost always on the list of things to do. OGE is a unique store and I am grateful that it is on Church Street in Burlington. I think people from out of town see a store that promotes healthy ways to stay active and engage with the environment and see this a a reflection of Burlington's culture. Thanks OGE!

I was in search of a of hiking boots in a size 8W and settled on a pair of Oboz. The only store that had them in stock was the Outdoor Gear Exchange (OFE). The order came in quickly but the shoes were not in the original box. When I reached out to OGE, they advised me that they had previously sent me an email informing me of the missing box. When I checked my emails, sure enough there it was. Their communication was great and they quickly resolved the issue to my satisfaction. I would certainly purchase from them again and hope to visit next time I'm in the Burlington area.

First time long time when it comes to OGE. I can’t say I have had better service when it comes to someone asking me the right questions. Erica was the best boot fitting experience I have ever had. She was truly wonderful and helped me get a new set of boots she also helped my mom out with some foot pain in her boots. I would definitely recommend asking for Erica if you need help when in oge.

This is the best gear store in New England. It has the best selection, an incredibly huge inventory of brand new, cutting edge hard goods and clothing/footwear, but also tons of discounted gear, samples, closeouts. Also, the basement has a well organized Consignment section for used clothes and gear for all ages. Best sock selection in the state. To top it all, the staff are friendly, welcoming and very well informed and experienced without being condescending. I found all of the Christmas presents for my entire list in one stop. Also, the shop is obeying strict COVID-19 safety protocols, and offer curbside pickup and free shipping over $49. Highly recommend.

Always have a lovely experience here. Like a kid in a candy store. They always have the best selection, and it's always fun to poke around the very large consignment area. The staff is always easy-going, knowledgeable, not pushy, and friendly. I just placed an order, got some great deals, and it was shipped wicked fast, with no unnecessary/excess packaging, and everything was exactly what I ordered and in great shape. Staff is awesome and they seem to have everything you could ever want. I went in looking for a very specific travel bag and sure enough they had it. The customers are also gear smart because I was walking around with the bag contemplating whether to spring for it and a guy who was shopping saw the bag and convinced me it was worth the money. Prices are very competitive and I actually saved money over Amazon on my last purchase. Plus, local business that does good things for the community. Just go there, spend some money, look smart, support the local economy.

An update to this: I have received good communication from OGE customer service, including a direct call and conversation. I am satisfied that OGE is making steps to improve the customer service experience. I love OGE and the vast selection. I've been shopping here for many years. That said, recent customer service has been lacking in attention. My female friend, ready to buy a nordic ski package, waited in line at the ski/ bike counter for 20 minutes before giving up. She was the second person in line, with nobody behind her; it was not even very busy. This was just yesterday, a Friday evening. The male person in front had 3 male staffers working/chatting with him for the whole duration, and at no point did my friend feel acknowledged. When I mentioned this to a rep at the counter, they said that they often get distracted; I didn't get a sense that they would mention it to anyone. My friend mentioned hearing from other female friends similar stories. This is colloquial and I don't want to assume that this is a common trend. I sincerely hope that is not a trend. My friend is willing to try again another day, but is likely to shop elsewhere. I hope this event is addressed, especially if it is not isolated and others have had similar complaints.

The staff were helpful and friendly. There was a huge selection of outdoor gear, bikes, quality athletic shoes, sandals and hiking boots and hiking shoes. The discount walls were pretty pricey but paying for quality is the name of the game there. I got a facemask that was labeled for 24 dollars and was surprised when I only was charged 17 dollars and change. Great experience and I will definitely be back in the future.

I found that the man that was helping my friend and I find climbing shoes, understood what we were asking for, and kept giving us appropriate options after listening to us. They have more options than most locations and they even have a small climbing wall so that you can try your shoes. This was a great experience!

Only ever gone for the bike shop but I love the vibe of the rest of the store. It has everything outdoor related. The bike shop I think is one of the best in town. I demoed several of their bikes before buying a new full sus there. The mechanics know what they're doing and aren't afraid to explain how things work so you can do it yourself. All repairs and work is done incredibly fast. I even had a new set of wheels built here and I couldn't be happier with them. Chris is my go to mechanic in this department, but everyone here I've dealt with (for the most part) is great.

Great place to find good deals on winter clothing. I just found winter jackets, boots, and hats for my wife, kids and me at an excellent price. Back packs too. You may have to dig around a bit to find what you want in the second-hand area but it's well worth it.

Doug was very helpful finding everything I needed and having to go in the back multiple times for just the right helmet. Jacob did a great job picking just the ski boots I needed and the man who did the boot-ski adjustment was great (didn't catch his name though). Also was able to get 10% off the total since I bought everything for this season there! Good prices and lots of consignment clothing/jackets, etc too. The best outdoor store I've ever been to. I grew up in VT and had the luxury of the bargain basement, good prices, and really knowledgeable staff. Everyone who works there knows their stuff and has probably used the gear they are selling. I now live in Montana and wish there was somewhere like this around me. Who couldn't love a full service gear shop right in the heart of beautiful downtown Burlington, VT? If you are into a little light hiking they have you covered head to toe. Perhaps you're looking for something more adventurous? The can meet all of your needs. New gear is sold at street level, consignment sales of used stuff is in the basement.

Really like this place! The people are chill, positive, and knowledgeable. Sold boots through their consignment and used the credit towards a tent and sleeping bag for RAGBRAI. Nice bike dept too! Spot on with expertise and helpfullness... (especially when I showed up too early... sorry and thanks for still taking care of me!)

Best outdoor store in the area, especially if you're into anything technical (rock/ice climbing, backcountry skiing). They have a great selection of everything I've ever shopped for there, and the staff is knowledgable, friendly and doesn't try to push sales on you. My only gripe is the price of the clothing, but they have sales frequently enough that it's usually possible to find a good deal if you're willing to wait a bit. Plus, they have a GREAT selection of consignment gear downstairs - there are often amazing deals there.

This is your quintessential outdoor gear shop! OGE is conveniently located on Burlington's Church Street in the midst of all the other stores. This store has anything you could need for all of the outdoor sports/activities you can enjoy in this region. On the main floor you will find a TON of footwear, it's nice that they have a ramp to test shoes on. As someone that used to hike a ton in New York's High Peaks, the last thing you want is to find out you have a blister 3 miles into a grueling hike and your new boots are tearing up your heels. Skiing is a popular activity up here, the store sells a decent amount of ski and snowboarding gear. I also spotted bikes canoes, kayaks and so much more. There is often a sale tent outside the store, so that's worth looking through. I also found a section downstairs with either pre-owned or clearance goods. I personally love Yeti tumblers for keeping water cool, this store carries a lot of that type of inventory and some items were on sale. Even if you aren't sporty, there are still a lot of great shoes and clothing to check out here. The store is great, but a bit on the pricey side. Still it's nice to support local businesses and that seems to be the ethos in this area.

Just bought a Reid Hercules fat bike from OGE .. great transaction! When I called to clarify what size they had in stock, they offered to put the one in my size on hold for a day so I could drive down to see it. When I arrived, it was waiting for me - and they let me test drive it. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable and fun. No hassle, no pressure, no up sell, just lots of straightforward answers and insights. Their sale price was the lowest I'd seen for this bike online, so that was a bonus that sealed the deal. This is a very cool place with a lot of top brands and the full range of outdoor/athletic gear and accessories. It is not however, the place for a bargain, despite the exchange/outlet vibe. I bought something off the sales rack only to find I was charged full price, and a higher price than the same item was available anywhere else...by a lot! I was in and out of town, so was out of luck for returning. It was misleading at best. I guess the lesson learned is do your homework in every instance.

One of the best customer experiences I've ever had! This vendor was courteous, prompt and very professional on every level, from shipping to follow-up! A++++++++!!! I ordered a new Kelty tent from them off of Amazon. On my first camping trip a seam tore on the rain fly, it was totally manufacturer related. Anyway, as soon as I contacted GearX about it they immediately followed up with a email response expressing a caring customer first professional attitude. They promptly sent me a paid shipping label and refunded my purchase. I'm from now on considering myself a GearX patron, because I plan to shop there in the future no question about it!

However I did buy something walked out the store and got chased down the street my bag grabbed from me and taken back to the store because they forgot to deactivate a tag. Completely their fault yet I was treated like a criminal (they admit there is a lot of theft) and didn't get an apology. I returned the item: lost sale and lost customer. I was recently (11/9/13) at OGE to shop for cross-country ski gear. The first thing I noticed downstairs was the lack of sales help. There were lots of customers, but no one was near the skis to say "hi, may I help you?" I walked around the downstairs looking for 5 minutes and finally found a girl who could help, but in order to help me, she had to leave her post at the Consignment Area. That was nice of her. With all due respect to her efforts, this employee did not know much about "how to sell equipment to an interested customer (who wants to shop locally) and who has money to spend." She asked the help of several other young employees and they really didn't impress me with their ability to size my skis or my poles. They didn't seem interested in helping me, a customer. It was a disappointing experience. The tech guy somewhat redeemed my experience by installing my bindings while I waited. I am an active 55-year-old woman with silvery hair. I was dressed well and wanted to support this local store. I traveled 35 minutes to shop there. I felt surrounded by hipsters who didn't really know the merchandise and neither did they know how to cater to a customer interested in buying a ski package. There was so little actual conversation or sharing of information. I like the idea of this store, but they could work on their people skills for customers over 30. We (those of us over 30) are a large population, many of us with the incomes to afford the outdoor toys at OGE.

After a ride my mountain bike was making a few awful noises that I knew weren't good and I needed to get fixed ASAP. I had a day of downhill coming up in a few days and on my way over to OGE I was praying that they'd be able to take a look, figure out the issue and have me back on the trails lickity split. Sure enough Austin had replaced my brake pads and rotor and through a few (perhaps too many for a non appointment visit) test rides down Cherry Street he was able to identify and resolve a weird little squeak that was present for too many rides. Austin was thorough throughout my visit, is a top not guy and has great chat! Rick is also great - I now have a better understanding about my shock system, getting full use out of it, and when to increase or decrease the squish factor. OGE - all the time, every time.

OGE is my go-to for anything second-hand, any outerwear, or off-the-shelf items. They even do great work with replacing busted zippers, or small malfunctions on tents, backpacks, etc. Having said that, their bike department is pretty weak. I rolled the dice and bought a new mtn bike there because I wanted to support them and have since been disappointed at several turns. The bike was put together haphazardly, and over the course of the first few rides I had to re-visit the store 3x, each time only fixing a small part of a mess of problems. The shock had been built incorrectly (twice), the pivots were loose, headset was loose, and when then they offered to compensate me for my trouble, they set my tires up tubeless... and in do so destroyed the valve core so the tire never held air. I'm out on the service dept. at GearX. I'll bring my broken zippers, but never again with bikes. Three stars is a bit harsh, but the bike costs a lot more than any tent or sleeping bag I've purchased here so I don't think it's unwarranted.

After a half hour of looking around, I find a few items priced within reason (nearly everything is way overpriced) and then I have the urge to use the restroom. So I'm standing there holding like $200 of stuff in my hands (and have a little more to go in my budget) and ask a staff member where the restroom is. He tells me there are no public restrooms. Another staff member adds "there are some down at City Hall but they are probably closed now". I like the idea of OGE, but it's overpriced, located in a high-rent and parking-adverse area, has no public restrooms. Extra star because I just put down the stuff I was going to buy and left.
