Reviews of El Cantito Cafe

SAFE Review
Service: was sub-par. The wait time was very long, nearly an hour before we were even served the appetizer. Yes, the place was very busy but this was a due to a planned party and they had not prepared for that. Other reviews also complain about a long wait, which gives me the feeling that it normally does take long time. The servers themselves were courteous and nice, though you could see that they were overwhelmed.
Ambience: is a small restaurant with a party vibe to it. The place was very crowded and very loud. This is a place where you can hangout with friends, have some drinks. The tables are really small.
Foo: was delicious and worth the wait. It was one of the most authentic Puerto Rican food I have had, second only to Sofrito perhaps. All items we ordered were delicious and do fresh. It tasted homemade. I would have given it 3 stars but the food made up for it.
Experience: The long wait time was a big disappointment, but the good was worth the wait. The music being played was so loud that we could not have a conversation. The music itself was very good. They had a live band, a talented group.

I cannot begin to tell you how happy we are we came here to El Cantito Cafe. The food was amazing!!! I had a trifongo with bistec encebollado and my husband had a trifongo with pernil. We ordered white rice, beans and chicharrón de pollo for our kids as well as yucca frita. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. The staff is so friendly and the restaurant is very welcoming. We have already shared with our friends and family. Since leaving the Bx we had missed homemade PR food and we are glad we came here for dinner tonight. We will definitely be coming back soon and if you are in the lower Westchester area and are in the mood for authentic Puerto Rican food, go check it out! You won’t be disappointed!!

Had a great time today @ El Cantito restaurant. The food was delicious and owners of the establishment (I'm terrible with names) are kind and comforting. This will be our new go to spot when we want authentic Puerto Rican cuisine 🇵🇷 …

Super friendly staff, great music at good volume. The tostones were perfect, crispy but not hard and salted yum!!! I loved the rice and beans also!
Get the coco mojito so perfect. Also they make mocktails if you want w/out alcohol. It was nice to finally eat out and be greeted by very nice professional staff, will be going back for brunch and trying the jibarito sandwich with plantainsss.

Hands down the best Puerto Rican food I've had in New York. Trust me, I've had a lot. The staff are always wonderful and so sweet, always working hard. Then is the food!!! Absolutely amazing!!! Chef Julio is very approachable and always makes us feel so welcome. Let me tell you if you want to treat someone with delicious Puerto Rican food, this place will never fail you.

We have a party of 4 adults and 2 kids. We came across this restaurant on Google and decided to try it based on good reviews.
Waiter very nice and attentive, however the prices and food portions did not match. The food was good but not great for paying 80 bucks for 2 people. Alcapurrias were delish however it was $7.00 for 2 mini alcapurrias cut in half. The pernil
Was good but needed more seasoning. My friend ordered shrimp Trifongo and received 3 small shrimp for $15.00 insane. Wish them all the best because the owner was very nice but the prices are not fair for what you get.
In addition be aware that they count children as adults and automatically charge you 20% if they need to meet the party requirement to charge auto tip, this to me was insane.
Possible Curry Dork
Almost there. You're very close.
The tostones and alcapurrias were authentic Puerto Rican. The meat was fine, chicken and pork. Your mojito "garlic" is also very good.
The beans were quite terrible and tasteless. Tasted like water, no sofrito. This needs improvement.
Other criticisms- Your menu pricing is unjustifiable for some items. Carne Guisado should not be $26 unless you're using grass fed organic beef 😂.

This place is everything I hoped and dreamed of. The food is bomb, and I didn’t even manage to get pics of the stewed chicken + rice cus I literally INHALED that ish (good prices too, including lunch special). Place is super clean and has ✨immaculate✨ vibes, the person who owns the restaurant was taking orders and is so sweet/kind, food took less than ten mins without even ordering in advance.
Also did I mention the food is flames? Fried chicken came with the mayo ketchup and this avocado something? Idk it was fire tho.
Lastly, ignore that person who gave three stars cus “improper coronavirus protections” or whatever - everyone had masks, the door was open, and they have outdoor seating idk what more they can do besides going into the kitchen and cooking up the vaccine themselves. Not their fault the food is fire and everyone wants to dine in, maybe just get takeout like I did if you’re so uncomfortable? Weirdo? Anyways if you want good food don’t look any further 🏳️🌈

The place was clean and inviting. The music was a plus I felt like I was in PR. The food was tasty however I would’ve loved more shrimps in my mofongo- 3 is not enough. Coconut Lemonade was very refreshing and tasty as well. I would recommend this place to anyone. Reserve ahead of time if you have a group larger than 5-6.

As a Cuban I have some if the highest standards when it comes to pernil. They served me the best pernil I have had outside of my home. Absolutely love the tostones and rice with it. Excellent service! Very authentic and welcoming place.
Pedro Velazquez
Hands down best place in Yonkers for some homemade Puerto Rican food. Great ambiance and cleanliness. Great staff and amazing cook. Outdoor patio available too. And they have a bar as well.

Let me tell you about this gem I found in Yonkers! I come here a few times a week. The owner is amazing and super hospitable. Always a great experience but more importantly I’ve tried most dishes and have never been disappointed!

My friend and I were looking for a lemonade spot in Yonkers since we were in a nearby park. This establishment appeared in our google search and we headed to Cantito Cafe. Upon arrival we found parking, which is great and we’re greeted with a Puerto Rican and LGBTQ+ flag. We immediately thought this place must be open and accepting y bien Boricua.
We sat at the bar where we were greeted by the head Chef and the owner who were busy attending to orders and drinks.
The fresh lemonade prepared was amazing that I ended up ordering four. We decided to grab some appetizers before I departure and settled for the empanadas with beef, cheese and chicken. The chicken and cheese were my favorite. Very tasty.
The decor needs some work but it feels like a restaurant off the beat and path in Cabo Rojo.
The menu seems decent and they have a drag performance on Wednesday nights. We are looking forward to having a full meal at the establishment. Prices seem fair.
The five stars were awarded based on hospitality, attentiveness to details for our lemonades and the satisfying empanadas or should I say Pastelillos. 🤗
Kris
The food I leaves you speechless. The service is also amazing. The whole environment is laidback with some good music and drinks. This is gonna be my go-to spot form now on!
Facts No Cap
First time going to this place and it was a great experience. Owner greeted us along with his staff. The empanadas was delicious nice and hot and crispy. Tried the beef, chicken, and cheese and you can whatever seasoning and sauce they used, and add the dipping sauce which made it even better. Wife ordered the mofongo with shrimp scampi and she tore it up. I ordered the sandwich de pernil and the pernil was cooked just right. Drinks were strong too. Definitely recommend this place I know I’ll be back.

Daniel is an amazing server and the owner is always attentive and super hospitable. I come here a few times a week to get my spanish food fix. I have tried so many different dishes and i am never disappointed. It has been an amazing experience time after time! I wish them much success!

Julio, the chef and owner of the restaurant treats you as if you're a guest in his home. He is very hospitable and the property is clean and attractive. You can feel the Puerto Rican love in every bite of his delicious food.
Gil Colon

One of the best Puerto Rican foods I have eaten in a while!!!. Julio the owner was so sweet and nice, the staff members were awsome and very pleasant. I was truly pleased with the service and the taste of the food. I am definitely considering going back to the restaurant again with my family!! Love it!!!
Isabel
Love the Puerto Rican decor. The staff and chef Julio are lovely! We had the trifongo which was mouthwatering, I love the sweet and savory contrast. The arroz con gandules and aguacate were delicious! Food was fresh and the presentation appealing. Debbie the bartender is on point mixing up very satisfying drinks! I have visited several times and absolutely have recommended this fine establishment to friends and family. Viva Puerto rico!❤️🙏🏾 Pa' que sepa!

The food was quite good and tasty. Service was good and the people were very friendly. Music was great. Will definitely go there again.
Justin Negrón
This is a golden spot for authentic puerto rican food! Its flavorful and reminds me of how people cook on the island. The owner is a humble man that is extremely kind and talented. He is also the chef! Come to El Cantito!!!

The food was good chicken chunks with rice and beans Mojito classic...

The food here is very good and the portions are pretty big. Still, we did feel like it's a bit on the expensive side compared to similar restaurants in Yonkers. Service was a bit inconsistent; our server was friendly and energetic, and the chef said hi and is very nice. But we went long stretches without being checked on, and our appetizers arrived after our entrees. The drinks are good for the most part. If you like your mojitos strong, definitely get one.
Alondra Kristal
This place is by far the BEST puertorican restaurant around! I come here from Connecticut because the food is top tier. Every single item in their menu is delicious and the taste is authentic to PR, makes me feel close to home! I cannot find places around that are this good at all. The staff is super nice and attentive, drinks are great as well and strong. It's a small business/restaurant but you can tell how much love they put into their dishes and it's 100% worth coming here!
Tamara Nair
Food in authentic pfrom.puerto rico.. the only is the waiting I waited 40 minutes

The service was fast and friendly. The food was very flavorful and delicious. I ordered the grill chicken with sweet plantains. The chicken was moist and the plantains were not greasy. The ceviche was filled to the brim with shrimp and fresh avocado. Definitely give this place a try.
Marilenna Rose-Cortes
This is by far the best Puerto Rican food in all of New York I’ve had thus far. Do yourself a favor and forget about any other places. This is the most authentic and flavorful food I have had off the island in NY. For those who have never gone to the island this is what real Puerto Rican cuisine is all about. The portions are generous. The prices are reasonable. I’m so happy I found this place. I highly recommend!

The wife and I are both Boricua, and we travel every year to La Isla (Puerto Rico), where we spend 3 weeks looking for the best food wherever we can find it. From Vieques to Culebra and the main island, we've been to dozens of places since 2000, when we first decided on our annual vacations. That said, for anyone who would rate this gem of a restaurant with a negative review, make sure to check your agenda at the door. I think the negative reviews here are from people who really aren't familiar with authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. The wife and I have spent all our lives at Puerto Rican dinner tables, so we know what quality looks and tastes like.
I took the wife here on Saturday before Mother's Day as we were both looking for a good Puerto Rican restaurant with some good food. El Cantito Cafe far exceeded our expectations, and for a very reasonable price at that.
We had shared the Ceviche de Camarones (amazing), and the wife had the Mofongo with Chicharron de Pollo (OMG!!!). I had the Trifongo with Camarones, and for desert we had what can only be described as "the Heaven on Earth " of Flans. Was the food good? No, it was *amazing*. What was equally good, to our complete surprise was the service. The wait staff and the management were very attentive and kind, and made some very good recommendations on our behalf.
This was our first trip, so we knew nothing about it until we rolled up and parked, and let me just say - it was worth the hour long ride down from Putnam County to enjoy what was arguably the best meal we've had in a restaurant so far this year. Period. We look forward to becoming regulars, as I looked around the other tables and saw other families and groups enjoying their food. Not one person complained or was disappointed with their meal, and for a busy Saturday night that's saying something.
Well done, El Cantito Family! Thank you for a memorable evening, and I hope to see you again soon!
Jackie Lee
Absolutely awesome! The food was DELICIOUS and the drinks were SO yummy. The owner Julio is so personable, knows many of his customers by name and treats you like family!
The space was clean, and the staff were very friendly. The music and ambience is perfect and reminded me of my trip to local restaurants in Puerto Rico. The menu is just perfect with the right amount of selections, with many must-try signature Puerto Rican dishes. According to Julio, they are his mother's secret recipes.
I highly recommend!

We've LOVE El Cantito Cafe. Both the food and ambiance are superb. The chef has done an incredible job with his menu. This restaurant is a must try! It has become our go-to spot when we want amazing latino food around the area.

Amazing Service! They treated us like family instead of just another customer. The Chef came around making sure everyone was taken care of. Entertainment was on point! Authentic Puerto Rican food made with love! So tasty! Passion Fruit Mojitos and Guava Margaritas 🍹😋

Never disappointed with their food. Was in the mood for a trifongo with chicharron de Pollo so I ordered to go. While I waited I had a passion fruit mojito. Delicious!

This place and its crew are absolutely amazing! You can taste the passion in the cooking; the food is incredibly vibrant and fresh. My family and I went today to grab some lunch and I tried one of their specials: the mofongo burger. It did NOT disappoint! In addition, they have the best flan I've ever tasted. We look forward to returning soon!

How can I put this... the food was AMAZING! Service was top notch, very attentive and very accommodating. I highly recommend it. That PR food was one of the BEST Caribbean food I've gotten in a while.
Casa DeSola
My new go-to place for Puerto Rican food. The chef has outdone himself with excellent food and delicious drinks. Try the coconut mojito! Simple decor brings you to the streets of Old San Juan. Already planning my next trip!

One of the few remaining Puerto Rican restaurants in Westchester. Their food is excellent and the servers and staff are very nice. The venue is a little small but its well designed. The only downside is the music they have playing is too loud IMO. Definitely will be going back.
Lisa Sarauw-Lugo
The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and super 0helpful (especially Justin.) The food was served quickly and was hot. Servings were generous. Ok so we are Puerto Rican and this place is a gem! Everything we ordered was full of flavor! The empanadas were so good the 3 of us had to have a second order. Then chicharron de pollo with rice and beans was perfectly cooked. The pollo en fricase was spiced to perfection. Now the Mofongo was the best I have ever had outside of my family home. I ordered it with pernil which on its own is worth the visit. Had to have tostones too which is more than enough to be shared by the table. I look forward to visiting them again and working through the menu. 5 stars is not enough for this review. Look forward to their continued success.
Dyaami D'Orazio
we sat outside to eat and everyone was very sweet and accommodating. the food was delicious - we had the chicharrón de pollo, rice and beans, and maduros. would def visit again!

I absolutely love this place. The food is tasty, the atmosphere is awesome, the music is fantastic and the customer service is top notch! I have been there many times. Highly recommend.

My family and I noticed this place while visiting the retro gaming store next door. We heard the music playing outside and walked by to check it out. The servers and host were very friendly and accommodating. They even made sure to arrange the outdoor tables and clean them off for us. The weather was sunny and breezy so it felt like a day in Puerto Rico. We ordered 3 Sunday lunch specials, yuca fries, 3 lemonades and jibarritos sliders. Everything was delicious. You could see they used homemade sofrito and fresh ingredients with their lettuce and tomato. The jibarritos were freshly made, and generous size, tostones still hot and crunchy, meat was well marinated. The steak with onions was flavorful, and soft and shredded so easily. Next time I will order with more onions on the side. Rice was perfectly cooked and beans were delicious. The stew chicken was flavorful, fall of the bone. The pernil had a devious roasted garlic flavor, I just wished the threw a little piece of crunchy pork skin. The yuca fries were tasty and sauce served as well, I would have also asked if they had a garlic mojo the next time. The portions seemed small because it the large plates they were served on but let that not fool you. We left with full happy bellies. The lemonades were so refreshing, it was the kids favorite. It was beautiful Sunday afternoon, with wonderful servers, food and breeze. I will be sure to come back and try some other items . I would love to support them again!

I was looking forward to my visit based on the reviews and ratings. I suggested to my family to come here and we made a night of it, being Puerto Rican ourselves and finding a good place outside of our own homes is hard to come by. Aside from the music being way too loud, I enjoyed everything I ordered (trifongo with pernil and coconut mojito) but I wish I could say the same for my family. For starters, they did not like their mango mojitos at all and opted for Coronas, as they felt it a safer choice. My brother in law said the chuletas were too salty and overcooked but ate them because he was too hungry, but did say the white rice and beans were good. My sister in law did not eat her food (chicharron de cerdo and maduros) and barely picked at it because it was super hard. For my nephew, who is a picky eater, we thought we played it safe with plain white rice but he didn’t eat it because he said it had no flavor and was hard. We felt so bad for our server because he was super nice and provided amazing service. So my own dinner and the service were amazing but I felt horrible for my family who did not enjoy it as much as I did foodwise. The decor is quaint and parking was easy (right out front). I would also suggest maybe a kids menu? At the end of the night, the bill was right under $100 for 2 entrees, an appetizer, 2 sides, 2 beers and 1 cocktail.

My friend and I have become regulars here during the pandemic. We are so happy that El Cantito has been able to survive and hope to see them thriving in the near future. The owners are very welcoming and the staff are very accommodating. It feels more like visiting someone’s home. The food is very good, especially the asopao, when you’re looking for comfort food. The beers are always cold too!
Carlos J. Santiago Rubero
Great! 1st time here and feel the Puerto Rican charm again. Great people, tasty food. Must try it!! Gracias por el trato, vuelvo pronto!
Miguel Baez
Came in after hearing all the hype from neighbors. The place is super clean which is a big thing for me personally these days and the staff were warm and attentive. Started with a trifecta of empanadas (Beef, Chicken and Cheese). I was immediately wowed by the flavor and freshness! For my main course I had my go-to Fried Red Snapper, (I love comparing and contrasting from different establishments). I wish I had taken a pic but it looked so yummy I had to dig in. 5 outta 5! +++Extra bonus - their drinks are quite strong!!

Neatly tucked away off Tuckahoe Road, I happened to find this gem of a dive that offers authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. It was after 9pm and I was looking for any place that offered vegan/vegetarian options. The chef, Sr. Julio Santana saved my palette with the mofongo of mofongo’s, arroz con gandules, and rice and beans all without meat, and a sautéed kale salad I never imagined possible. The modest price of it all left me feeling like a thief, so I tipped well naturally. The atmosphere, vibe and attitude of the staff was also a very refreshing as for one, it’s quite rare in New York in general, and two, quite common and familiar if you ever experienced the people of la isla de Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Definitely my go to for that daily dose of reality.
Definitely my most positive experience in a long time at a family owned restaurant hands down.
Midiam Diaz
Customer service was good. Food was okay. very salty and took a long time for the food to come out, a little over 45 min. so don't go hungry. We only liked the empanadas and the pernil there. I was excited to try this place being that I'm PR myself and can't find good spanish food here. I'm not sure if I would recommend this place. maybe just for drinks and appetizers. i'll stick to Caridad
Loni Fernandez Rojas
It is a truly a small piece of Puerto Rico, I’m Dominican and my husband is Puerto Rican therefore a lot of the food I’m aware of and have tasted. Truly great service, great atmosphere and the food is amazing well cooked, seasoned and made with love. Truly take you back to your childhood.
Steven Forti
Food was awesome service and atmosphere was excellent. My wife and I loved it

Why are we limited to five stars? This place deserves 100 stars!!! Let's start with the ambiance. Very quaint and cozy, and is beautifully decorated. The bar set up is nice and sits perfectly in the corner. There's also outdoor seating with a relaxed vibe. The food is AMAZING, served fresh and full of flavor. I've been to Puerto Rico 3 times and the food here seems to take me back. The drinks do not disappoint. The owners are SUPER friendly and go above and beyond to make their guests feel at home. I live in Yonkers and used to drive to White Plains to get great tasting Puerto Rican food. No mas lol!!! I HIGHLY recommend this spot for those looking for authentic Puerto Rican dishes like abuela used to make.
Erik Arroyo
My, my, my!!!!! I am so proud to see that the Puerto Rican flag is represented here. The food is amazingly compared to the traditional Puerto Rican home cooking. The ambiance and the family, friendly service makes it all complete! I felt like I was at home during my early childhood years, eating my mom's home cooking! Wepa!!!!!
Danielle Bello
The food at this place was AMAZING!! I loved everything I tried (empanadas, sancocho de pollo, tostones). The side sauces are tasty too! Omg and the coconut limeade...most delicious beverage I’ve had in a longgggg time. I’m thrilled we found this place!

Customer service: Superb.

Delicious food, great atmosphere and amazing service! The staff’s passion for food and attention to detail is refreshing. A must visit if you live or are in the area. It’s great to have a “little piece” of Puerto Rico‘s cuisine just a visit or phone call away! The Mofongo bar menu is great, I’d definitely recommend the Trifongo! 😋😋😋
My family and I can’t wait to go back!

Very good Pernil sandwich excellent. The tortones are dry & hard( overcooked). Need to be softer & salted
Rosario Pena
Good Puerto Rican food. I had the churrasco with maduros. I also tried the chicharrones de pollo. They were really good. Loved the flan. Coffee could have been better though.
Daisy Otero
The food is simply authentic and mouth watering. The pastelillos took us back to los piñones!!
Chef Julio captures all the Island flavors, and elevated his mamita’s recipes. His sister, Debbie is a magnificent hostess. She will always be our “Magdalena.” I highly recommend this new and delicious establishment.
Chelsea Montero

Be prepared to get to go home with a bag of leftovers.
Highly recommended 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷!!!

I would have given more stars as the service was quick, attentive and courteous however, it was not a safe and responsible environment during a pandemic. I expect that patrons that are eating and drinking are not wearing masks hence the social distancing and my choice of the outside dining option. But 2 of the 3 servers and bartender were walking around wearing their masks as chin straps rather than covering their mouths and having close contact with patrons at the bar like less than a foot away and no one wearing masks then coming to wait on me! Sorry tasty authentic food but not worth catching covid for! Not the place to be if you are trying to enjoy a meal out but also trying to be covid cautious. Please workers should be wearing masks and not exposing others to everyone they interact with. I even asked that I be served with a masked waiter which l was but then had other servers bring items who were not wearing masks.
Gloria Rodriguez
They're very pleasant although it takes a little bit for the food to come out. Most times the food is very tasteful but the lemonaid drinks could be a little more tasteful. Overall very good place to visit.!
Erica Badillo
The food was absolutely delicious. I know everything is more expensive due to inflation but it was definitely a bit pricey.
Rachel Molina
I just want to say that this is some of the BEST Puerto Rican food I have had in a very long time. The food and service was EXCELLENT. I RECOMMEND and will definitely be coming back!

Absolutely LOVE this place. I am here right now and had to stop to make a review. I came here with my family to celebrate my 21st birthday , the food was great, beautiful music and the owners are very hospitable. Everyone seems very down to earth and lively. 10/10
Paul Grohman
I would like to start this review by saying that five stars are insufficient to describe this restaurant and its food. I had the vegan sancocho and the chicken chicharrones appetizer. The sancocho is ridiculous, so much flavor and the vegetables are so tender and delicious. I would eat a gallon. The appetizer, pictured, has to be the best chicharrones de pollo I've ever eaten. The portion is huge and the taste is Creole food at its best in my opinion, even my cat seriously enjoyed it. The only problem is that I had to seriously resist indulging in food while driving home. The atmosphere of this restaurant is nice and warm, you are transported to Puerto Rico while you are here. The prices are reasonable and the service is very fast. I can't believe I've never tried this place before, it's like five minutes from my house.
Richard “ELClassico” Dominguez
