Reviews of Convivial
Matthew Rathbun
This was literally the best brunch experience I've ever had in my life. Convivial was recommended by a hotel staff member after hearing what I was looking for. We stopped by before they were open and they allowed us to be seated to stay out of cold. The staff was exceptionally polite, accommodating and took time to talk to us even after the crowd came in and the became busy.
The restaurant is a perfect environment for comfortable brunch. Well decorated, contemporary and warm.
The food... OMG. The food was outstanding and the drinks were mixed perfectly. I had the pork chop and it was simply delicious. Every single bite made me want to stop the world around me to enjoy it. I highly recommend trying it.
If you're looking for delicious brunch, this has to be the best option in DC!

Dino was our server. Very polite, prompt, checking in with us at convenient times. We sat on the patio and he offered us bug spray (for the mosquitos right away). The food was phenomenal. I had the cassoulet and the duck skin was perfectly crispy, the meat tender and flavorful. My boyfriend had the the steak, which was perfectly cooked and served with the most delicious fries. Our sincere compliments to the chef and staff.

Went in for date night dinner. The dinning room area was spacious and we didn't have to wait to get sitted. The bar area I must say is gorgeous, spacious and has way better ambiance than the dinning area. They offered a wide range of boozy cocktails, (hot ones too), but their sparking wines were a little flat. For start ordered the onion soup that was delicious, the portion size for the entree was perfect such that we took leftovers home. It's a pricey place, but their food is worth it.

Out of the 5 dishes we got, 2 were tasty. To start, we got the bluefin tuna (tasty) and pate (medicore). For entrees, we got the porkchop and steak (both mediocre).
For dessert, we got the chocolate mousse dessert, which was amazing! In hindsight, we would have skipped the disappointing and overly expensive entrees for extra dessert.
The presentation of the food and the service was good, but it wasn't intimate at all - I could fully hear the conversations to my left and right, but I struggled to hear my friend sitting across from me. I expected better food and atmosphere for the price, but was very disappointed.

Went for dinner last night and it was by far one of the best dinners I had in DC. The chef worked with me to help select dishes to accommodate my dietary restrictions. The dessert was amazing and super light we didn’t feel guilty having 3 different ones! Highly recommend dining there.

I love the staff, Very friendly. Great food and drinks. Excellent desserts and espresso.
Michelin recommended.
The patio seating could use an update and indoor could use some air fresheners.

Had an amazing dinner here last night for dinner! Wasn’t crowded for a Thursday but we had made reservations in advance through Resy.
Food was so delicious! For starters, loved both the Escargot and Crayfish Nantua—well flavored and good portions. For entrees, the Bouef Bourguignon was great—the beef was so tender. Would love to come back to try their other dishes.

The name says it all for the dining experience here. The room is well spaced out, warmly decorated and allow decent conversation with your meal parties. The food is really good if not outstanding. Ingredients are fresh and served in generous portions. I’m glad i didnt order any appetiser otherwise I wont be able to have room for more sinful dessert.
Beet of my heart, I kid you not thats the cocktail I ordered. And you guessed it right it has beet in it. Its a concoction of burned beet syrup with bourbon. The drink sounded weirdly phony but its actually quite well mixed and tasted refreshing.
Highly recommended

Loved the Almond Croissant and my friend loved her quiche, but my foie gras dish was a little too cold so all the fat was pretty hardened- I would have preferred it at room temperature or slightly warm.
Would definitely come back to eat here though!

I don't think I've ever smiled more during a meal! My partner and I are visiting from out of town, and we're wishing we lived here just so we could eat at Convivial more often. The entire staff was so kind and helpful. Our waiter, Carlos, was AMAZING! Definitely the best waiter I've met. He was spot on with recommendations and knew just how much attention to give throughout the meal. Speaking of... the food! Oh my goodness, everything had such wonderful flavor from the appetizer to dessert. We had the Quenelles Nantua, Boeuf Bourguignon, Cassoulet au Confit de Canard, Sticky Toffee Pudding, and L'Ile Flottante. I couldn't pick a favorite. They were all incredible. We ate almost every bite!

Pleasant French place in NW DC, kinda pricey for the experience but it’s decent. Service was good, room is nice. I had the bouillabaisse, pretty good.

Wow, I can't say enough great things about this place. Just thinking about all the exquisite flavors are making me drool. While I was waiting for my friends (who were running late because of Metro issues), I decided to start off with the vol-au-vent. My only regret is that I didn't finish it quickly enough and had to share with my friends once they arrived. I loved everything about it: the phyllo shell, the whipped potato cod, the tender calamari, and the sauces. We started ordered cocktails and the cheese plate (camebert, tomme opari, selles sur cher) and the Cher was our favorite by far. We also ordered the quiche, trout, and nicoise and they were all delicious. One of my most enjoyable culinary experience in a while!

Truly some of the best food I've had on a date night! My partner and I went to celebrate Valentine's day, and the experience was excellent. Highly recommended if you're feeling French and are looking for high-quality food and well-sized portions.
Drinks: We started with the Napoleon's Gain drink. I got mine with vodka (it normally comes with Gin) and it was similar to a Moscow Mule. My partner also got the Château des Antonins Cabernet Sauvignon with the main course.
Food: The Foie Gras & Duck Liver Mousse was extremely tasty! For anyone who hasn't had it (I hadn't before), I'd recommend trying if you're feeling adventurous. My main course was the Loup de Mer (branzino) and it was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. My partner got the Cassoulet with duck, and it was great as well.
Dessert: We got the Le Grand Rocher Jivara, which was essentially an oversized Ferrero Rocher. It was AMAZING, highly recommend. I got the recommended pairing (Graham's 20 Year Tawny Port)-- if you're feeling bougie I would go for it.

This restaurant has been on my list for quite a while, and I finally got a chance to try it! My boyfriend picked this restaurant for my birthday dinner so I was definitely excited. We picked the 3 course dinner for $40 / guest, I believe. I had the tomato gazpacho, which I did not enjoy at all. My boyfriend picked a flatbread, which was pretty good but not as enjoyable as it got cold. For my entree, I ordered the bouillabaisse and my boyfriend ordered the salmon. My entree was 8/10 and his 6/10. The dessert was decent as well. I had the key lime pie; but I can’t remember what my boyfriend ordered. Overall our experience was 7/10

I’ve been to Convivial three times now, and won’t be stopping any time soon. Their food is awesome (trust me and get the quiche). Their french onion soup is quite standard and doesn’t let you down. The have a pretty great dessert and cocktail selection too. The ambiance is interesting and eclectic, but works. Definitely worth a visit.

Went for dinner last night,Great food and wine selection. Classic French dishes with some American flourishes.
Kerri Knowles-Marr
Enjoyed an excellent Father's Day Brunch with the Family. Comfortable and totally delicious. We tried several dishes. All were outstanding! Look forward to dining there again soon.
Fernanda Lanzagorta
Lovely French bistro with delicious plates to try. The brunch has a little bit of everything for all the cravings, something sweet, something salty. The French toast a must to try.
Jayne Lim
Love the duck paella 😋 Muscovy duck, pan seared foie gras, confit duck leg, cognac & duck sausage, roasted breast aiguillettes, hen of the wood mushrooms, baby turnips! Impeccable service as well! …
Katie
The food was pretty good for the most part, the server was very friendly, and the place was nicely decorated. However there were 3 servers on a Friday night for what appeared to be well over 45 tables. While the servers were nice, they were so busy waiting for courses, and the check took much longer than eating. We tried escargot for the first time and it was not bad! The pâté en croûte was not for me, although it was so pretty. I tired something new, but I wouldn't order it again. My sisters chicken sandwich however was amazing!
Isaiah I-Say-ah Walker
It was an OK experience! We sat outside, which was fine, ample social distancing space. However, I believe they were understaffed that day because our server had tables inside and ours outside but he seemed hurried everytime he was able to check on us! He tried his best to be attentive but his service was still lacking...
Me and my date ordered from the three course menu. We both tried the French onion soup with gruyere which was delicious! For my entree, I tried the George's shrimp and grits. It was not to my tastebuds liking, I'll say that. It had too much lemon zest it overpowered the dish. So I sent that back and ordered the Salmon with leeks, green beans and mussels! I thoroughly enjoyed this plate, great combination and flavors! We both chose Key lime pie for dessert which we had to go.
Overall it was ok; but I doubt I'll be returning!

A good french restaurant. Anything that is french on the menu you know its gonna be pretty good
I liked the french onion soup and the escargot.
Also got the Duck for two. It was good but had a interesting aftertaste, it was still good though
There are better french spots in the city but this is a good spot. I would go again and get something other than the duck

Hip contemporary American setting with a wide range of French options for brunch. Had the roasted califlower appetizer, which was served over a tasty creamy beet sauce. The crepes are also enjoyable. While a heavier dish, the bechamel sauce is delicate and the spinach balances out the crispy and cheesy flavors. Husband ordered the roast chicken which is generously portioned. Drinks pack a punch. This place has some interesting options beyond typical egg dishes for brunch. Would want to come here for dinner.
Jake S
This place was a complete gem & totally worth coming to. I got the french bread & it was phenomenal. I was here for brunch & while it is on the pricier side I found it generally to be on par with the value. We had drinks which were delicious as well & the wait staff was super friendly & welcoming. Will absolutely be looking to return here
Allen Liu
Everything tasted great, portions are quite large. Highly recommend the french toast!

True 5/5. Went here for a special occasion. Ask about their pre-fixe 3-course dinner special (have to ask) - it's a steal of a deal! We've been to many a fine dinning in DC - this one is of the few where *every* dish was a showstopper, including desert - try the poached pear, it has shaped vanilla mousse around it (pictured) #mindblown! The snapper was tender and delicious, and the seafood appetizers were unique but surprisingly flavorful and tasty for French cuisine - try the Cod beignets. Service was acceptable, ample parking and it has only limited tables (<20) - so do make a reservation! If this is on your list - go! - otherwise make sure to add it and enjoy!

Absolutely exceptional experience. Our waiter Carlos gave us amazing suggestions and we followed every single one. We ended up having an incredible dining experience with great ambiance, amazing food/drinks, and had a wonderful time. The entire staff were so friendly and kind. Hope to visit again soon when we are in town!!

Come if you like much flavor or sweetness. I would prefer if It's less salty or sweet.

Brunch was delicious! Service was great! We went back for dinner, the food was ok, the service matched. I recommend visiting during brunch hours- the food is amazing at the time. The service is great. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Again, I recommend visiting during brunch hours.
Kate Carr
Great brunch spot. Delicious food (loved the quiche, fries, salad, and fabulous cinnamon roll). Our server, Yayudin was excellent - went above and beyond. Have been for dinner in the past as well, it does not disappoint. Will be coming back.
Jon Hayes
Came here on a Friday night with a party of 3. We made reservations earlier that same day. We heard this place had a good burger and it was true, the double bacon cheeseburger was delicious. They have a decent amount of outdoor seating but we sat inside. The tables were well spaced out and they provide a spray bottle of hand sanitizer. I would definitely recommend this place. The chocolate mousse dessert was also extremely good.
Claro G
Everything was tasty, great presentation and excellent service!
Natasha Lamalle
This is one of my favorite restaurant in DC. The menu is always great, and the food is so good. If you are looking for typical French dishes, this is the place. Their wine selection is also very good. Warmly recommend it!
Yongdo Lee (Paul Y Lee)
Had brunch.
Food was great, just as the atmosphere.
The servers were professional and everyfood ordered was great.
Will be back for sure.

All around A+! Food was amazing, wait staff attentive and extremely knowledgeable on food and drink pairings. Manager was on it! Asking us how things were and how he could improve things. Will definitely come back. Love the ambience too! We got mussels (best I’ve ever had), a crawfish soufflé, and French onion soup. Superb!

I was completely blown away by the dinner I had at Convivial. I went for restaurant week where I got a three course meal for a more than reasonable price ($35). The food was incredible and you can tell they put effort into every little detail (they even offered hand sanitizer and bug spray on the tables). The staff is very attentive and I most definitely plan on going back soon. If you are looking for a safe place to dine during the pandemic that also has good food, check this place out!

This was the first time that I went to Convivial and I loved it. While it does not receive the same amount of fanfare as Le Diplomate, Convivial is among the best French restaurants in DC. Perhaps if the atmosphere felt a little cozier and had more of an authentic French feel, it would be different.
The table got beef tartare, escargot, and a cheese selection. For an entree, I got the Loup de Mer with Kale Provençale. The dessert is absolutely not to miss and the menu is extensive. I split the Crème Brûlée and L’isle Flottant. I had never heard of the latter, but it’s a soft poached meringue topped with a drizzle of caramel and topped with almond slices—all surrounded by a sea of vanilla cream. It tastes as good as it sounds.
I think this place deserves more attention than it gets because it’s great.
Scott Matus
Very good modern take on french cuisine. Quality ingredients, nice combination of flavors, and well cooked. We went for restaurant week and were very impressed. Very nice service too, and good wine list.
Highlights were the Burrata, Grilled Daurade with Squid, and Chocolate Mousse (which was superb).
P Ak
Great food depending what you get. Love all the veggie dishes. Service could be annoying and pushy.
The English breakfast was good but the veggie special at the same price was too light.
Update
Tuna carpaccio Nicios was tasty and fresh.
Salted cod brandade beignets was tasty.
Crepes were a combo of spinach, ham, mushroom and gruyere cheese.
Baba dessert was pretty good.

Long overdue review of what has become my favorite restaurant in DC. I come down to DC every few months for business and make it a point to try to visit Convivial as much as my schedule allows. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and relaxing. The food is out of this world delicious. It is complex without being pretentious and the breadth of the menu satisfies my cravings for rich, light, savory, or sweet depending on my mood. Chef Cedric has been at the restaurant on nearly every one of my visits and seems to make it a point to say hello to diners. I can't recommend Convivial enough
Andriana Genualdi
Great place, I went here for a late lunch on Saturday and was able to take a seat right away at the bar. Had great service and got good recommendations from my server. He was also able to make my Aperol Spritz slightly sweeter as I requested. I ordered the quinoa porridge and it was great, served warm with list of veggies on it. After that I had the cinnamon roll for dessert, wow!! It was so good! All around good experience here.
Krissy Coles
This restaurant is across from the Giant food grocery store. Their menu is based around small plates at high prices. I ate all of the chips and dip. The soft shell crab and lamb was great. The strak was also very good. I devoured the strawberry shortcake, it had a jello consistency.
Ace HBK
Went for Saturday brunch. Great food that is also accompanied by even better customer service. Loved the location and ambiance. Definitely will return again and I highly recommend. Coffee is excellent!! Picture is chicken & waffles with gravy and a fried egg.
Matthew Muir
Everything was good. Service was perfectly attentive, no more no less. Chicken and waffles were a winner. Omelette and shrimp&grits were quite nice. Waffle with fruit was perfect for a kid. Key lime pie was recommended. Nothing ordered was disappointing.
Gloria Huangpu
Usually I'm not that into dessert, but the hot sticky toffee pudding with maple ice cream was divine! Since I was there for restaurant week with a few friends, we shared a bunch of the small plates, which were all beautifully presented and yummy. The bread was also extremely chewy and delightful. My main was the bouillabaisse with crusty bread, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Our server was lovely and knowledgeable about the wine we ordered. Overall, a great experience.
Raymond Garcia
Wow! The service and food were amazing. Very family friendly atmosphere with incredible offerings.
Kutoof
Convivial offers a spacious environment of joyous people. Our waiter offered the best of the menu from the foie gras, roasted cauliflower, to the duck, daurade, steak, and gnocchi- every dish was unique and flavorful. For dessert, I would suggest ordering two of the sticky toffee. P.S: They have firecracker candles for birthday celebrations!
Rhea Rossiter Koziatek
Brunch menu was pared down, but the items we got were delicious. The brunch cocktails were excellent and service was very professional. My husband and I enjoyed this little neighborhood gem. Great for a weekend brunch date or a celebration.
Kelly Donlin
This place is packed so make a reservation and don't expect to be seated early. For the appetizers I HIGHLY recommend the burrata, I had never had a bell pepper carpaccio but it goes well with the fresh cheese. For the main course the steak, trout, and bouillabaisse are all quite tasty!
sahithi ellanki
The entrees were a good portion size but I think they could have used a little more flavor. The desserts were absolutely amazing. I had the Sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate souffle
Shawn Pagano
From start to finish, my husbands and my food were very good. My cocktails were impressive as well. I tried the squab and let me tell you, it was amazing. I'm guessing that the food is what makes this restaurant Michelin Star worthy. The only issue we had was the service. Our server started out very nice, but then it went down hill. Our table was never bussed before our food came, and we were at a very small table. The table next to us, however, had their table bussed and new silverware was given. We had none of that. I understand that restaurants are very understaffed, but to see a table directly next to us given stellar service, was off-putting. I chose this restaurant for the menu and the Michelin status. I believe that the service should be consistent when you have a star. All in all, it was a good experience, but we would probably choose another restaurant in the future.
Paquita Poindexter
Sat outside for brunch. I had a leak quiche and cinnamon bun for dessert. The quiche is presented in an in traditional manner; the filling was silky smooth, almost felt like a soup... the cinnamon bun was warm with lots of icing. Yes to all!!
Deven Lee
Amazing food! Incredibly friendly service. John Ferris was our server and he made our night! The duck entree was decadent. Don’t leave without getting dessert.
Sammy Mills
The atmosphere is fun and lively, great place for a celebratory dinner, dinner with friends or a date spot. The menu was a little limited but the food was delicious and everything came out looking beautiful (loved the presentation). They did have some vegetarian options! Our server was friendly. All around a good experience!
Dax C
While my steak tartare was exactly what I was looking for, the tuna dish was rather salty.
Rather spotty.
Caylea Barone
Absolutely delicious. Came for restaurant week, enjoyed every course! Wait staff was a little scattered and we had to wait a while before someone addressed us at the start, but it got better through the night.

When I get something special for my wife’s birthday, there’s only one place to go. “Convivial” lives up to its name. The staff there is so charming, relaxed and welcoming…Oh, by the way, the food is damn great, too.
cheryl head
Amazing entrées. Sorry I could only eat one in my first visit to this restaurant. Full wine list. Attentive service. My host arrived 20 minutes late for the reservation they made. Ha! But the staff made me feel like family. Will eat here-again, and again.
Laura Ireland
What a delicious French restaurant! The dishes offered here are all authentic, and our server was so helpful in giving advice on the dishes.
Lawrence Chin
Went for Restaurant week 2017. Essentially their whole menu for $35, well worth it. Appetizer was the Zucchini Roulade and cheese selections, both excellent. My entree was the fried chicken "coq au vin" which was simply perfection. The dessert was the best sticky toffee pudding I've had ever. Very good spot for a fancy dinner.
Madeline Beal
We had a fun night. Cocktails and food were great but not quite five stars.
B “Frank” G
Food consistently good and any whoops will be addressed immediately! After my soup was delivered...a taste revealed a bit too much salt was added. Chef came right out to make sure I got something else so that in his words "I'd not go hungry and pass out" in a French accent. How could I say no?
Adam Eltarhoni
Went for Bastille day and it was really good. Our waiter was attentive and the food was great. I has the Bouloubaisse (sp), and the strawberry shortcake and chocolate mousse dessert. Will definitely go again.
David Pohly
Solid comfort cooking in a charming, spacious, easygoing setting. I will be back .
Caroline Driggers
The food here is absolutely delicious! They do a great job at captivating French culture and cuisine. The wine selection is great and the variety of ingredients on the menu is both impressive and exciting to foodies all around.
Justyna Kulpa
Wonderful brunch experience, friendly staff, excellent coffee and several vegetarian options. Quinoa porridge was A+!!
Louis Schwebius
My wife and I dined here for the first time on Saturday, 9/25/2021, along with our daughter, our son, and their significant others. We had such a delightful experience on all counts. Our server Stephane was courteous, friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive. Cocktails were tasty & potent! And the food was 5-star from start to finish! Several of us had the Taste of France 5-course special while others ordered individual items off of the menu. All courses were beautifully presented, delicious, and satisfying. We all were pleasantly surprised at the lack of heaviness in our courses and the subsequent lightness served to accent the many layers of flavor in each food item. (Our only regret was that the six of us could only manage to all share 3 of the decadent desserts at the meal's end.) Highly recommended - a truly memorable meal - and we are already talking about when we will return!
Amber Pericoli
Amazing dishes, impeccable service, & awesome drinks! This is an absolute must visit

Excellent food! Friendly service! Great wine list..

Had a wonderful brunch, we loved the food and the service was stellar.
Eric
Delicious food. Also the most worthwhile restaurant to go for DC Restaurant Week because their menu almost includes everything that shows on normal menu.
Peter Ildefonso
The food was alright, but it had a lot of salt. The cocktails are awesome and great service.
Bernard Markowicz
Nice ambiance, good food, great French bread and great mimosa in a carafe! Crepes forestieres with ham were a bit salty to my taste, I prefer simpler. Next time I will ask them to hold the ham and add more mushrooms.
Bailey Childers
The bouillabaisse here alone is worth going for. Absolutely delicious. Also has a nice wine list, good service, and other menu items are good too. But the bouillabaisse! Oh, it also comes served in a personal Le Creuset (that you sadly don't get to take home)
Love eri
MUST VISIT! i went to convivial for dinner a couple of days ago and all i can say is that everything was amazing, the food, the service and the atmosphere! if you want true authentic french food, then convivial is the place to visit. I can't even explain how delicious the food was. I ordered the french onion soup and my friend ordered the duck, both came out in a timely matter, and the presentation was beautiful. I normally don't write reviews but everything was just amazing at convivial! Will definitely be coming back
Zachary Elder
The staff are knowledgeable about French cuisine and super accommodating and kind. Great atmosphere, especially the outdoor patio. The perfect place to spend a summer night.
John Low
Earns it’s distinction as a fancy French place. I’m a fan of cassoulet (which you are only likely to find at a fancy French place) and I think theirs may be the best I’ve had, topped (in more ways than one) with a great confit duck leg. Desert was great and others with me also thought it was great.
paul maiorana
Food was very good, except for the crepes. Service was very good too. Drinks were a little disappointing.
Roger Muller
Food is amazing as always, workers very knowledgeable and professional. Relaxing atmosphere
Thanks,

Good food and drinks. Doesn't have the 3 course meal on the weekends. Unfortunately because that is why we planned to go there. But food was good none the less.
Kim Moore
Amazing food, lovely decor, excellent service. I will return next visit to DC.
Stephen JW Steele
Pleased with the food, but even more impressed with the desserts. It's nice to see this cuisine tucked into this little pocket of a place on 9th Street.
The wine could have been a bit colder but the selection was good. The wait staff was professional and took good and friendly care of us during our visit. Thank you Carlos for helping my date give me a nice birthday.

I am sad that I've been in Washington DC for two years and did not know about this extraordinary restaurant. Simply the best French food I've ever had in this country or since my vacation 10 years ago at the French countryside...Convivial is simply Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding, outstanding!
Nathalie Denham
The best French onion soup you’ll ever have and somehow it’s vegetarian!! absolutely delicious food but we’d go even if it was bad because the service is great they make you feel like family. Ask for Nina and tip her well!
Nancy Carpenter
Simply delicious! From the French Onion Soup to the scrumptious desserts, we were pleased with everything. I highly recommend the beef bourguignon while my friend enjoyed the steak frites. The heaters on the patio are wonderful. Thank you for the attentive service as well!
Yuan Li
Can here for restaurant week for date night. Everything was fresh and delicious. Very good experience.
David Jochelson
Second time dining here in person. We did take out a few times here during the heart of the pandemic and Convivial has yet to disappoint. The French classics like Steak Frites and Beef Bourgogne are amazing, but French twists on other classics like Shrimp and Grits are equally amazing. My wife and I both highly recommend this place!
Nina Borroto
Best French restaurant in DC!! I decided to bring my mom to Convivial last weekend when she was in town. The service was amazing and the food was out of this world. The food here is a work of art, every dish perfectly crafted with the right balance of flavors. We had an assortment of appetizers but the highlights of the meal were definitely the pate en croute, salted cod beignets, and the steak tartar. However make sure to save room for dessert because the pastry chef is not playing around. I would recommend the poire belle Michele !
Yousef Abdul-Husain
Masterfully juicy fried chicken sandwich bursting with flavor and goodness. Fries were okay.
Erin Weber
Dinner truly felt like an experience. There were options everyone got really excited about, and the cheese and wine selection was amazing! Very cozy atmosphere and excellent service.

Delicious food. Great ambiance. Average servicd.

Restaurant week review: went with two friends and we had a blast. Service was very attentive and knowledgeable. The food was really good and came in big portions.
Wine list was manageable and with a very good price point.
A restaurant we will visit again.
Brad Fredricks
Busy spot with fast service and good food. Nothing really blew my mind, it's a misable place if you're not in the immediate neighborhood, but an excellent place is you are going as a group.
Service was friendly, mood was fine. Some places have character, this one just has good food, not great, but good. So it makes sense as a neighborhood reliable spot.
If you're not in the immediate area of this french fare, don't go out of your way.
Aroyia Jones
I had the Quinoa porridge, and it was absolutely heavenly with how it melted in my mouth. Now it's a taste that I w ill continue to have a desire for. Lovely environment, 😍

Good brunch with an a la carte menu. Service was fast and they dealt with our group of 11 people well
Kimberly Tran
Went here for brunch and loved it so much we came for dinner with friends. Exceptional food, atmosphere and staff. Prix fixe is a good deal. Our party of five got all different dishes and all of them were delicious.

Their food it's truly tough to beat and their prices are reasonable for what you get. I've never had anything short of a delectable dish here and I've tried many. Cocktails are also always unique and on point. Stoked they started serving lunch!
This last visit, my omelet was so absolutely perfect, accompanying salad and fries rounded out my meal perfectly. Irish coffee with hand "whipped" cream?? I melt. Ambiance and service also great. I mean... It's Michelin rated and has received a host of other accolades and stellar reviews for a reason. If you haven't eaten here yet, you're crazy. Check 'em out!
Ethan Starkey
We went during restaurant week and got a great deal for an appetizer, entree, and dessert all in one. The menu is seafood heavy, but has great options for folks who don’t want seafood. We had stellar service, good wine, and great food. Definitely a cute place to take a date or a nicer work dinner. We loved the atmosphere, and the food was pretty affordable for the quality.

This place has a nice location and vibe with an interesting menu. However, the food wasn't seasoned properly. I normally don't eat French food but I came here open minded not knowing what to expect. I had the fried chicken sandwich but was not informed that it would be dipped in Buffalo sauce; also the sauce on it was very salty. But as a brunch spot I definitely think it was a great quick bite. The sweets are great as you'd expect.

Been here twice and the food is so good, this is the only photo we managed to snap! Get the whitefish salad, steak tartare and the chicken for two
Diane Campbell
Lovely place for brunch. Delicious! Loved my croissant, and the pancakes were fantastic, but filling - I couldn't finish. Hopefully I'll make it back here before I leave D.C.
Will Todman
I’ve ordered from their daily menu for two almost every week since the lockdown started and continue to be blown away by how good value it is. The portions are so big they are easily enough for two meals for me and my partner. And it’s delicious too. I thoroughly recommend the sticky toffee pudding.
Nick Tustin
Delicious yet expensive food.
* Vegetable Quinoa Porridge - nothing like porridge (thankfully), but was absolutely delicious
* Mojito sorbet - great
Would be great to see more vegan options on the menu in the future! (The menu currently doesn’t even label things as vegan or vegetarian, it just has a bunch of different symbols (v, V+, V).. the server pointed out the two vegan options, both of which had two different types of v symbols, lol

First time here and it was fantastic. This was our first "pandemic-time" restaurant visit that felt normal -- meaning that service-wise, they were great. Oh, the food was delicious too! We'll be back.

This is a hard one to place. Everything about it was average. The food was average, the service was average, and the ambiance was average. I didn’t dislike it but I didn’t love anything. I ordered the burger because the menu was a fixture of nothing appealing. Gnocchi, oysters, and sea stew accompanied with Burgers and vege medley. When the vegetable medley is your best dish there is a problem. The burger was decent as was the medley. The bartender was an amazing guy and made a solid drink. The issue is not with him but the fact the bar was full and there was only one bartender to tend to it. I would say this is more of a Wednesday night dinner if you are in the neighborhood but not worth wasting a weekend over.

Friendly but sloooow service. Outdoor seating borderline at this time of year with plenty of indoor seating available?! Annoying LOUD music even outdoors; WHY?!
Interesting menu. Very good food.
Kyle Mansfield
Excellent dinner and wonderful service (so patient with our group on a busy evening!)
Mytaste Isgreat
The food is definitely French in a cosy corner of the Shaw neighborhood and everything we had was delicious. A very attentive service made for a very memorable evening. The wine list is limited to French and US label and the cocktail tend to lean toward classic. They were nothing to dislike really and we cannot wait to visit next time we are in DC again. Maybe for brunch or Happy Hour (staff told us it was a great deal...)
J Hau
Fantastic food, fantastic service, fantastic experience. Not sure why other reviews described this was not authentic. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in France, and would describe the food at Convivial very comparable.
Perks Advisor
I experienced outstanding service at this small plate venue, attentive but not overbearing. First course made the meal with the beet dish which had a nice soft crunchy texture. The second course featuring bits of lamb bathed in a salty gravy disappointed and I would not order again. Some worthy mostly French wines along with an outstanding Rose went well with the meal. The ambitious dessert menu was average in taste. Parking is available and they validate. Worth a visit, my meal with wine and tip was around 75 pp.
Maddie Hallett
We ordered the carry out Lamb, Endive Salad, Key Lime pie and olives. Baguette came with the order and it was INCREDIBLE bread!
Amazing value, the ‘serves 2’ served 3 of us easily. Thanks for staying open so that we could try your food!
Caroline Maunakea-Hammonds
We came for brunch 7/8/18 and it was an absolute delight. We started with delicious coffee, and a heavenly cinnamon roll to start. For our entrees, I ordered the quinoa porridge and my hubs got the fried chicken sandwich and both were downright scrumptious! Our server Elvis was friendly and prompt, and all the staff we interacted with was pleasant. Such a great time, and we will definitely be back. No wonder they are on the Michelin list of places to eat in the district.
Daniel
Fantastic food and great value. They do not stiff you on any portions. Great service and atmosphere too. Felt very unpretentious and welcoming. Favorite restaurant in DC.
Jay Gopal
Great HH.. good staff and service. Some nice cocktails
jasmine belthrop
Went for brunch on a Sunday, they has waffles and pancakes but no French toast on the menu. The cinnamon bun and hot chocolate were great, but the fish and chip were a disaster. My partner got the lamb sausage and loved it. I would go back here, but not for brunch.
HM Bush
Went for a late brunch - the pancakes were really good.
Steve Seliger
We ate here on a Sunday early evening with a large party including a younger child. The service was very friendly and accommodating. The menu was varied with many intersting options and a mix of new and traditional French dishes. Food was very well prepared with interesting flavor combinations. We recommend the chickpea fries for their texture and interesting concept, and the trout and Dourade for skillful preparation. Overall a great meal and friendly ambience. Hope to return soon.
Daniel Kim
Convivial is a really chill restaurant with good food, and if you need a place to hang out with a lowkey vibe this is it.
French styled food, slightly on the heavy side. Ultimately one of my favorite restaurants to go for a comfie dinner. I come here pretty often.
8.2/10
9.1/10 for a DC establishment.

Food and vibe was great. We brought our dog along and he was being more curious than usual, but everyone took it in stride. Servers and Bussers doing a wonderful job, and they had bug spray for guests that had inadvertently become dinner while eating dinner. I recommend the paella and mousse!
Jeffrey Bowles
Quite good food. Appetizers were excellent- enjoyed the accompanying sauces. Had the trout which was ok. Pecans would be better than almonds. Tasted the pork chop. It was excellent. Portions were reasonable.
Desserts were very tasty. Chocolate souflle was very dark chocolate flavored. The apple tarte was not too sweet. Ice cream could have been a little more plentiful.
Andrew Aczel
The staff was a little odd but the food and atmosphrere was wonderful. The lighting and music both compliment the environment well. The menu had a great layout and it was a good mix of comfort and modern dishes. Quality of the food was fantastic and the portions were a perfect size to fill you up without you feeling like you were gonna burst.
Matt F
Food was very good however having last eaten here around 2017, I was expecting the smaller tapas style plates that I really enjoyed back then. The menu is now more traditional in nature which is fine but not what I was hoping for on my return visit.
Robert Martin
The food was above average. The escargot app and the boeuf bourguignon were top notch. The steak frite was overcooked though. The service left a lot to be desired.
Jibrail Nor
Came for brunch with a group of four. Delicious food, I wish there were more egg dishes without pork and dairy. But there were several fish options that were tasty. Decent prices, friendly service, good drinks
Jacques Moore
Hits and misses. We were a party of six. Overall, we left disappointed. My steak was too salty. Her fish was perfect. I recall the appetizers were two out of three not great. The bread was fantastic.
Our server was pleasant but not as attentive as I’d like as we found ourselves waiting more than once for a water refill, a clearing of dirty dishes, an offer for another drink, and the check.
Alex Barron
Festive, fun, lively restaurant with excellent food. Elegant, but unpretentious and prices are pretty reasonable considering the high quality. Try the tarragon chicken for two - not the most exciting-sounding dish on the menu, but it's fantastic.
Brenda Lazzari
We went to Convivial for our Christmas eve dinner, and it was so fantastic that we made reservations on the spot for their New Year's day brunch.
Convivial is french made to enjoy not to intimidate, you can expect from a classic french onion soup that makes you say oh wow! to other delights like Cassoulete and Bouillabaisse rooted on superb classic flavors, yet lighted up with a contemporary touch that, at least for me, seems to let you enjoy these dishes much more.
That is also the balance of their atmosphere, you can dress up for your date and the restaurant ambiance feels chic and elegant, if you are passing by from work, their bar is casual and welcoming (with excellent cocktails). Did I mention that service is on point, helpful and attentive.
Being that it was 6 of us I could write quite the extensive review of almost every dish, but my hope is that whoever is reading this simply go to try for themselves, no matter the occasion you can't go wrong with Convivial.
Cool Dad
Excellent food but service ok.

Casual friendly atmosphere. Food was delicious! The owner checked in with us. PSA: the profiteroles are enough for 3 people. Sadly, all 3 of us had ordered individual desserts!

I am so glad to find this hidden gem in shaw, this is the best french food I had in DC so far! Although the portions were not gigantic, I savored every bit of the pickled rockfish and the bouillabaisse that I ordered. Also they have a great choice of cocktails and wines. The overall experience was excellent and I am definitely going back there to try the rest of their menu.
Katherine Barradas
This is one of my go-to's whenever finding a place for dinner when friends are in town- it's not terribly difficult to get a reservation for more than 4 people and everyone always enjoys it. It is maybe a little more pricey considering the plates are a little small, but I still think the price reasonable for the quality of food. I love the Parisienne gnocchi with mushrooms, and I know my friends have really enjoyed the poulet rouge. They also have a pretty good happy hour deal!
David Molina
Amazing food, absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The drinks are fantastic and reasonably priced. The French food is exquisite, probably because the owner is French. Definitely recommend for Brunch and Dinner.
Pat Snodgrass
No pics of food but this place is wonderful! At our table, we had the gnocchi and bouillabaisse, both scrumptious, and then went on to dessert. You'll have to get the chocolate dessert with the sprinkler on top....oh my!
Kevin Kampschroer
Chef Monpilier is creative, and produces consistently fine food, even now under these difficult circumstances. Who though of porridge for dinner? Yet I've had it three times, I like it so much. The chicken is always special, and the take home options are nicely prepared to travel. I can't wait to enjoy the food in the restaurant again. It was my mother-in-law's choice for her 90th birthday dinner.
Eileen Hemphill
Our party of 8 celebrated a birthday at Convivial midweek. We were seated immediately (reservations ) in a cozy banquette area. The wait staff was attentive and helpful regarding the menu. We ordered a variety of beverages and dishes, all excellent. The rainbow trout was outstanding. A minor glitch delayed a second round of drinks and the main course of one guest. But the overall experience left us looking forward to our next visit. Another plus is the convenient parking next door.
Michael Dahan
Had dinner last night with friends. Everybody LOVED the food. The appetizers were creative (snails in a blanket!) or very well made French classics (salade lyonnaise, with frisee salad, chunky bacon bits and a poached egg). Wide choice of entrees. My choucroute (sauerkraut with sausages and meats) was perfect, my wife loved the duck à l'orange and my friend was raving about his bavette steak with fries. For desert, the profiterolles and the "floating islands" were delightful. Both French and American guests around the table thought this was the best French food they had in a while. The restaurant is very pleasant, modern with a beautiful bar. The service was attentive and the Chef came to recommend a few things on the menu. He is very nice and took the time to speak to us. By the way, as we were hesitating between two Cabernet-Franc bottles of wine, he recommended the less expensive one! Great choice!
Go to Convivial soon!
Mary Kay Goetter
Delicious food and thoughtful service. I appreciated the lovely music but would have wished for a bit more of an authentic and warm ambience unique to French restaurants. That is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 that the food and service deserves.
Anna Katt
The fried chicken coq au vin is a must! Great service, a lot of great small plate choices, slightly overpriced.

My Girl Scout troop was traveling from Minnesota to have a fun trip to Washington DC. On our last night we all dressed up fancy and went here. I had never tried a lot of the things on the menu, so I ordered my first and seconds and I didn't like them at all. I wasn't used to "fancy" food whatsoever. I was devastated, being celiac and all I can't eat much. The waiter realized I didn't touch my food and that I didn't need a box, so he went to tell the manager about what happened and a lovely woman named Tiffany came out to make sure everything was okay, I felt like I was in trouble so I felt really bad and I cried a little bit, she told me to move over and she sat next to me, she told me "a Girl Scout is supposed to be honest and up front with everything, and that's what you did today and I'm really proud you told us" and when she asked if we were getting dessert we all said no but she insisted on bringing out two gluten free desserts the 6 of us can share. She brings out the lovely desserts that we all can share, she comes back to check on us, I'm smiling enjoying the treat, and Tiffany says "I'm so happy you're happy, because that's what I want to do when something is wrong, make it better!" On our way out I gave her a hug and explained no restaurant owner has ever done that to me personally and I was really touched. Even though the food didn't taste good to my pallet, my heart was full. I was so happy that someone would go out of their way for someone like me. The management here is amazing and I'm so grateful I tried something new and I met someone along the way!💕
Luis Rivera
Great experience during restaurant week. Service and food (onion soup and sea bass) was delicious. Dessert (chocolate mousse) was decent but not special. Service was great and a great table and vibe. Will return.
Raphael Tisch
Spectacular dining experience. Would have like to see a few more cocktails on the menus, but that's far from a complaint. All the dishes are delicious, and the bacon cheeseburger doesn't get any more perfectly balanced. The toffee dessert is magic.
Rick Yorgey
We visited during Reataurant Week. Service from Sarah and team was great - very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. Although the bouillabaisse was tame (my wife described it as "a bit boring") everything else was fabulous - from the cauliflower to the cheese plate. The duck, with a light gravy (laced with cherry juice??) was especially delicious. Desserts were awesome, particularly the S'more dish - PLENTY for 2 people - except that I really didn't want to share it!
Tiffany Locus
The food is very tasty. I went with a group of friends. We had excellent service. They have a weird schedule where they stop serving food at 2pm and then the kitchen reopens at 5pm. Otherwise, it's a great place to meet up with friends.
Jennifer Greenslit
Casual friendly atmosphere. Food was delicious! The owner checked in with us. PSA: the profiteroles are enough for 3 people. Sadly, all 3 of us had ordered individual desserts!
Jacklyn Currier
Great menu selection especially their happy hour on Monday
Anne C
The ambiance gets four stars, including the bar area which looked cool. Friendly, attentive staff. I give the food three stars relative to DC's five-star worthy restaurants. So still a decent rating, although for the price I'd hoped for something more. I agree with the reviewers who say some of the food was over-salted. The menu was pretty meat-heavy, and the server (and website) weren't able to tell us where their meat comes from, so I assumed they don't ethically/locally source. All in all, I would say there are better restaurants which are less pricey even within the same neighborhood. Worth trying at least once to see if it's your scene, especially since so many people seem to love it!
Brittany Fells
This is a great place for quick bites or large parties! They give plenty of options ( vegan and vegetarian). The atmosphere is welcoming and there is also outdoor seating. It's in a convenient location as it's 2 minutes from the metro. It sits directly on the corner and is hard to miss!
Keith Wunsch
Great atmosphere, very friendly service. Menu is quite moderate and location is upscale. The beer on tap are largely from Microbrews. If you prefer simple food, this isn't the place for you but if you have a diverse palette, you will enjoy it.
Amanda Reiser
Great place to find fresh French food in DC. We went during restaurant week and got 3 course meals. The ingredients were all fresh and had complementing flavors. The courses also came out quickly but we didn't feel rushed. If it wasn't restaurant week it would've been a little pricey
Katie Umberger
Convivial is one of, if not our favorite, restaurant in D.C. We came here for our first date, and have been back many times since. Especially since it holds a special place! The food is always amazing and never disappoints. Cannot recommend it highly enough. You won't be disappointed.
Valecia Wilson
They have a great happy hour. The bartending is exceptional and it's always nice and quiet. I also really like their brunch. This is a good bet if you enjoy French and Mediterranean food!
Shaw Yu
Service is good and unrushed in a good way. Flavors are good, I just wish I could have tasted it through the incredible amount of salt in the dishes. I felt hungover the next day from the massive amount of sodium in every dish I had.
Mike Powers
Great service, interesting cocktails, try the Duck Paella. Cauliflower appetizer was also a surprise hit with my brother who isn't normally into french.
Sinan Pismisoglu
Very very nice food, very cool location, nice wine list, great staff. Perfect location for a date.
Kate Swofford
A neighborhood mainstay - staff and food are wonderful! We live nearby, frequent convivial, and usually eat at the bar. The quality of their food has been consistent since they opened. Can’t say enough good things about the staff, they really aim to make every visit special.
Ben Layton
Eaten here twice. Two of the best meals I've had in DC. Would recommend after dark (much better atmosphere). For sure get something from each section of the menu, or you're going to miss out on some awesome food (ok, dessert is slightly more miss-able than the others, but still good).
Jessica Chau
The coffee was terrific but the crepes were just OK. They weren't what I expected. They were really heavy with lots of cheese. I couldn't finish it. Also bit into some sand which was unpleasant.
Jim Day
We did takeout from Convivial tonight. Absolutely awesome. Pickup went seemlessly. Wonderful coq au vin, onion soup, potato chips, and chocolate mousse. Did not suffer from the drive home. This has always been one of our favorite restaurants and we will comd back often while we’re staying home. I’d post a photo but we ate the food too fast.
George Albany
One of a kind menu in a quiet, but up and coming part of town. Great house cocktails and a modest beer selection. A little fancy (I was under dressed the first time, but not refused service). If you sit at the bar and get Patrick, you're gonna have a good time.
Dawna Quick
Delicious food served by knowledgeable servers in an environment conducive to conversation. I loved my dinner experience and would love to return to try more. The onion soup is highly recommended!
Lou Ann Dorrier
Great place to meet my friends for brunch. My meal was excellent. Best quiche I've had in a long time. And dessert was spectacular!
Richard Ingebretsen
Good and unique dishes, I love how they use snakehead fish for the appetizers. Most of the food was delicious, especially the beef tartare and the roasted cauliflower, but my duck was a little tough to chew (tasty though). Staff was friendly and bubbly.
Kate Steadman
Came during restaurant week, during which they had several options from their standard menu. Service was great. Space is nice but a bit crowded. Enjoyed the fried chicken coq au Vin, a signature dish. I know critics have raved about this place but I just didn't think it was anything special. Decent prices for a decent dinner.
Chris Shenton
Confident, high-end cooking but in a relaxed atmosphere. I'm a pretty serious cook/eater, but there were plenty of things on the menu I had to inquire about (who knew "oyster leaves" existed, and actually taste like oysters?). Definitely will go back.
Stephen Perry
One if my partners' birthday. Such care and attention. Interesting perfect food. What more can one want?
Paresh Bhatt
Very good. Solid cocktails. Enjoyed the vieux carre. Beef tartar and chick pea fries great. Entrees executed well - poulet rouge, cassoulet, pork belly, and steak frites all good. Service fine.
Daniel Garatea
Excellent food, and great service. One of the best restaurant week menus I've come across so far. The Fried Chicken Coq au Vin was awesome and the mix of textures really made it perfect.
Chris Martin
Interesting food, great bar and lovely service make Convivial one of my current favorite DC eateries. Happy hour at the bar offers a great selection of beverages and dinner and dessert options! A great option for an upscale, but less expensive, early dinner with a friend after work.
Peter Strapp
Been here three times now. Twice for drinks and appetizers and had a good time and enjoyed the food. once for brunch and enjoyed the English breakfast. Pricey but arguably worth it as I haven't left disappointed.
robert zarzar
The food is absolutely fantastic, from the pate, and other charcuterie to the fried chicken sandwich. From the the moules to the cassoulet. We had a great lunch with a bottle of GSM. Can't beat it. And we could converse without yelling!
Aleksandra Skoric
Dishes are lovely, and almost all gluten free. We had brunch, and I thoroughly enjoyed my chorizo sausage. Beets were phenomenal. We will come again.
Ben M
Love this place. Delicious, creative small plates and great Happy Hour.
Mike Matrone
Good, but nothing to write home about. Redeeming factor: the service was excellent. Food wasn't memorable. Everything came out a little too quickly, of which I'm always a bit skeptical. And it was all a bit overpriced. $17 for a zucchini roulade? Really? A bit much for what it was. I had braised lamb osso buco, friend had steak fritte. Neither bad, but not great either. For drinks, ordered their French 125. Excellent. Then a Pisco Sour. Forgettable.
Josiah Dykstra
Lovely French bistro. All the classics you would expect (onion soup, escargot, cassoulet, ...) plus other French-inspired originals. Classy but relaxed feel and attentive service.
Frank Bennett
Wonderful modern French food with traditional accents. We had the poulet rouge for two which came pan cooked under a hot brick to cripiness in a tarragon gravy with side dishes of salad, potatoes and roasted carrots and onions. Honestly enough food for three people though they suggest it for 2. The steak frites, rainbow trout and escagot spring rolls were also very good. We ate at Messaria two weeks ago and felt this was better cooking for less than half the price.
Tom Boyce
Great food and wine selection, very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient service. Blue Catfish Sandwich and NM Gruet Champagne, yummy!
This was a tip from a DC local working nearby and it was a highlight of the trip.
J Schultz
Loved it. Stand out were the Arctic Char, pickled rock fish, scallop boudin blanc and the cheese selection. The other major + is they don't have a bottle wine over $100 on the wine list. The only down side is it's very noisy and a pain in the ass to get a reservation on short notice. My one suggestion is go with people your are comfortable sharing dishes with so you can taste everything.
Bianca Bowman
Always looking for new or unique fare. Convivial's take on escargot steps out of the shell, but the true highlight was their skate wing almandine. Perfectly pan-fried and certainly like nothing I've eaten before. Delicious all around.
Kristin Cairns
We had an incredible meal there last night Friday. The outdoor seating was very pleasant and quiet. Loved the reinterpretation of French dishes and the use of very typical French ingredients such as socca, piperade, vadouvan, cancoillotte (a lexicon is provided!) We thoroughly enjoyed the fresh beet salad with tiny green olives and citrus, the fish croquettes, the cured Arctic char and the curried squash served over olive cake. We had hoped to savor a cheese plate and one of the tantalizing desserts but will save that for next time. The wine by the glass offering was also interesting and diverse. It would have been a perfect meal had it not been for the server's icy cold attitude. We apparently rubbed him the wrong way but it was certainly not intentional. Better luck next time, I hope, because the food is amazingly fresh, creative and delicious! I can't wait to go back.

Updated Review: On a whim we decided to give Convivial a 2nd chance. I am so glad we did. The food was much improved or we just seemed to avoid the things I didn't care for the 1st time around.
For dessert we had the celebration cake, it's a good cake with what seems to be some sort of firework on top. That is worth the price of admission right there.
*****
They just opened in the neighborhood and they may have some rough days considering the crowd that hangs out across the street, so 4 stars just for that. I'm very happy they opened.
I ordered 4 things. An old fashioned, the escargots in a blanket, sardines, and the key lime pie.
Let me start with what I liked. The escargots were lovely. They were hot tasty, meaty, little things and the dipping sauce just added to it. The sardines were a slice of a big sardine, not those little things you get in a can, topped with I guess is preserved lemon and a sprig of dill, on top of something like sardine salad and a hot crusty crostini. The key lime was pretty and rich. I was told it is the same thing served at Mintwood.
I did not care for the old fashioned. I was told there was a sugar cube in there somewhere but I did not taste any sweetness, nor did I taste a hint of citrus despite there being two big peels in the glass. I drank half of it after giving up hoping (if has happened in other bars) that it will get better. It never got better.
The other thing that left me wanting was the bread. Supposedly it was "bread and butter" I just tasted bread, no butter till I asked for it. It was good bread, but needed slightly salted butter.
I kept my expectations low because they just opened and they are still figuring things out. I will return again, probably not for an old fashioned, but because they are right across the street from the Giant grocery store I shop at and a few steps away from my church. I'm in the area all the time. I'm sure in a few months they will be better.
david nellis
Four of us dined there last Saturday night - it was an AWESOME meal from start to finish. The food is creative without being over the top, service was great, wine list was terrific and ... the prices are right on! Love it there!
Kyle Hennies
Pretty great food (Trout & Quinoa bowl), but I was not blown away for the price. The restaurant had great indoor COVID precautions with barriers between every table.
HyeSook Leechor
Excellent service but not the quality of the food. Amazing presentation but not the taste.
My husband and I initially wanted to stop at three dishes but added one more just to give it a try. The fourth one was as disappointing.
Escargots in a blanket. Nicely cooked crispy shell. The taste of escargots was buried in those of other ingredients. It was salty.
Zucchini Roulade. The sour taste overpowered in my mouth. Beautiful toppings but did not add much to the taste. Rather, it was distracting because of their taste. The zucchini was nicely cooked and beautifully rolled.
Quinoa beat borscht. Strangely bitter.
Tartiflette Fritter. There was a distinctive smell of lardoon which was much too strong.
Overall, for the restaurant with such high ratings, the dishes were not as smooth or pleasant.
Shaina Goldschlag
Food was decent but I was actually a little disappointed. The coq au Vin bites had, I dare say, too much bacon so it almost had a soy/Asian taste. The steak tartare had too much mustard, it masked the rest of the flavors.
Anthony Roh
Went for Restaurant Week, was great.
Chris Estafanous
The food I would give 4/5 I ordered the fried chicken. However, the sticky toffee pudding and the Smore's dessert were literally two of the best dessert I've had in my life. I would go back there just to have the desert for that reason they get 5/5.
Matthew Grayson
Service was excellent! Server was attentive and prompt. The wine list was delicious. The food was amazing! One of my new favorites.
Julian Kahn
Great restraunt and atmosphere. A little noisy but the food was great and not too pricey. The skate was fabulous, as well as the steak, and the muscles. Would definitely go again!
Stéphanie VAL
Awesome happy hour, very good drinks and a large food menu. The quality of both is great, especially the food. Being French, I was impressed I could find good French food for that price. And the place is very nice, including a beautiful bar!
Freddy Paxton
What a wonderful evening at Convival. Chef Cedric is so friendly and brilliant. I love the concept of sharing plates, so everyone in our party was able to try different dishes. Especially, because its so hard to choose just one amazing thing on the menu. You order something with an expectation of how wonderful it is going to be and when it actually comes to the table, its so beyond expectations and it will change how you think of the dish forever. The Chicken Coq au vin was perfect and one of Cedric's signature dishes you cannot find anywhere else. I also loved the take on Onions dip and Chips, Latke and the Zucchini Roulade as perfect beginning plates. I had the Steak Frite and it was so yummy and cooked perfectly, for my next visit I am going to try the Ramp Omelette, and hopefully I am going to make it for Brunch soon! Thank you Convivial for such a wonderful experience, the staff were incredible. 5 Stars!
Ryan Kellett
Food was excellent! Service was bizarre: Seating four tables close together with the same server at the same time is a bit of a recipe for disaster. Lots of tables were calling out to servers. On the other hand, a glass of water could not dip below 2/3 full. f
Kate McGinnis
Great patio for outdoor dining. We love that they offer a traditional brunch menu as well as a lunch menu on the weekends. Service was excellent.
Keith Weber
Great chicken and waffles! Great bloody Mary too.
Erin Kelly
Pretty great restaurant. They give you normal sized portions so the price is a bit higher than other places in the area. The atmosphere is neat and they have a good happy hour!
Roland J
I have been here for restaurant week and for cocktails. It is almost always a pleasent experience. However, I did come one time and two of the people who I ate with got severe food poisoning the next day. That has unfortunately tainted my opinion of eating here again.
Stephanie Ivory
I had lunch there today. Delicious food and the plate was well planned. The cheese was exceptional! Polite and efficient server! Nice experience.
Jean Baptiste Hallaire
Delicious! They have a great selection, and the food is excellent. Drinks menu is not as great but I'm not sensitive to that. Service is efficient and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
Hagai M
Food is always very good, no matter the choices, service is always friendly yet not intrusive, efficient yet not trying to rush you ot the door, and drinks are creative and with a decent pour. The vibe is neighborhood-ish with an upper scale nod, and people watching is always fun. Definitely worth a visit! Oh, and if you get there on HH, great selection!
Austin Graff
Convivial is one of those restaurants that will pop up on your Instagram feed enticing you to check it out, but if you want a truly Instagramable, magical experience, go to Kinship just down the road. Here's my critique of Convivial:
1) The decor feels like a restaurant in a hotel that needs only to be mediocre since it's in a hotel after all.
2) The food isn't amazing. Some dishes are good, but most of it was just okay. The bacon cheeseburger was just fine as well as the celebration cake, zucchini roulade, and the fritters.
Pluses:
1) The service was great!
2) The celebration cake comes with a huge sparkler creating a fun moment to celebrate a birthday.
All in all, Convivial is a fine place, but if you want one of DC's best, go elsewhere.
Chris Poch
Coq a vin was a little unorthodox, but probably the best chicken I've ever had! Escargot also solid. Highly recommend!
Kenneth Soares
I had the three course meal with steak tartare, steak friete, and their signature desert. I was very good and I highly recommend eating here.
Tara Casanova Powell
Food was good. Service was ok. My order was placed incorrectly and the waiter said that I ordered something I didn't and was a bit snippy about it. Thankfully everyone at my table heard what I actually ordered and corrected him. Would have rather not had to defend myself during a business dinner with colleagues.
Corey Maune
The food was totally amazing. Couldn't have asked for a better meal. The service was great; there when they needed to be, but not hovering over the table. A must try.
Jennifer Wondracek
I arranged for a group event here on a Sunday. It was perfect for our needs. The servers were great and everything went well. I highly recommend their non-alcoholic refreshers - perfect for a hot day.
Bridget Collins
Dinner was so good I'm back for brunch!
Jack Briner
Most salt I have ever had. My mouth was sore from the salt in the chicken dish. The boullebais was good and the escargot was good. The wait staff was a bit obtrusive.
April Carter
Sat at the bar for a quick dinner. Excellent food and the female bartender was fabulous.
Cora Davis
The pickled rockfish and grilled daurade were the highlights of a fantastic meal. However, the leeks dijonnaise disappointed. Soggy leeks on a plate could not be vindicated by the egg, breadcrumb, and caper topping. If you love yourself (and sugar), order the sticky toffee pudding. Our table literally gasped with delight at the first mouthful. Cherry on top: the ability to park in the Giant lot next door.
Shelbi Svoboda
Convivial is a true hidden gem of a spot in Shaw. Run by the same group that has Mintwood, the standard of service is just as high as the other venture. Sunday night is all night happy hour with ~$10 burger, amazing small plates, and affordable cocktails. Their fried chicken (coq au vin) for $19 is without a doubt life changing. Brunch is top to bottom delicious. Start with a cinnamon roll or two for the table and try one of their creative options with edible flowers.
Matthias Kuhn
The menu was humble and what you would expect but the dishes are constructed deliciously. The pink catfish had to be chicken but was still mouthwatering.
Aaron carmody
Fantastic Sunday brunch. The cinnamon roll was exceptional! My wife and I walked a few miles and we were glad we made the trip.
Emily Beltramo
The sticky toffee pudding is one of the more memorable things I've eaten, and the chicken and waffles are delicious. One of the best brunches I've had in DC.
Jesse Kopelman
Both food and service were outstanding. The vibe is casual. Best to go as a group to try as much of the menu, which is all small plates (although some are less small than others), as possible.
Paul W. Hughes
Very convenient location with excellent service, especially since we had two youngsters with us. They accommodated us wonderfully and the FOOD gets better and better. Delicious!
Irfan Dama
Great menu. Amazingly well crafted plates. Superb service. Warm inviting ambiance. Hey Cedric is a cool confident dude who knows what he is doing.

Everything was amazing. Service was top notch. Each dish was more delicious then the next. The hot sticky toffee pudding is an absolute must.
David Greene
Good shrimp and grits and fried chicken sandwich. Good service. Would recommend that they serve the burrata appetizer with bread.
Mike Hanna
We had a party of 12 for an outstanding dinner after a conference. Food was stellar and the service was wonderful. I could not be happier with the evening!
Sybill Dizzordre
Enjoyed my birthday dinner here this year. Food was delicious, though the server suggested we order more food than we really wanted. Start slow and add more.

Very kind and attentive staff, eager to help guide you through the menu. Their drinks and pastries were also top notch. Will definitely be coming back.
Brendan Hering
Great food, reasonable prices (can't beat $35 for a starter, entree, and dessert in DC), good wine list, excellent service. Try the escargot!
Trav Smith
Been a few times, once for brunch and once for a private event. Both times the staff and food were great. I would highly suggest it to anyone who wants to try something different.
Russell Sveda
Our host wanted to give us a farewell dinner at any restaurant of our choice in the DC area. As he owns several fine ones, we were inclined to pick one of those. Asking his opinion, he suggested Convivial, the new one owned by his longtime friend Chef Cédric Montpillier, who used to work for Michelle Richard at Citronelle and had run Mintwood.
Convivial is true to its name: excellent food and wine in an informal setting that reminded us of the best creative unpretentious neighborhood restaurants in Paris. Five years ago, who would have imagined this could have happened in Shaw?
The three of us shared trios each of starters, fish dishes, and meat dishes. The escargots in blankets resemble miniature fried spring rolls with escargots bathed in butter with cilantro and garlicwere.. The blanquette de veau cooked in white wine was splendid, as was the fried coq au vin.
When we get back to DC, Convivial will be our first stop.
Tyr M
Classic French dishes with some American flourishes. A very fine meal. I’ll be back!
Arrik “Smurf” Magruder
Nice spot in Shaw for good food and drinks.
Rachel H
Went for dinner. The service was very kind and prompt, although they never brought the appetizer (it was not on the check). The food was delicious!
Steve Kaufman
The BEST burger in DC!!! But the chef is one of DC's most talented!!! And the wine list includes a lot of affordable gems.
Cesar Monarrez
The brunch food leans more towards the lunch side (mostly savory) so if you want sweets, this might not be your place. Otherwise, good menu and tasty food.
Angie Gray
Chef Aaron is fastidious and innovative. Love this place! Highly recommended!
Camille Delaney-McNeil

Matt Haggerty
This place is awesome. Great, interesting food and drinks but totally unpretentious. Went for a date night and we both loved it.
Nora Livengood
The quality of food was pretty good, but all the dishes seemed to be exactly the wrong size. They're not an entree, but they're too big to be "small plates"
Artyom Shmatko
