Reviews of Southwest Diner

Here's the deal! The food was spicy good. This place is worth your time. I've had the food of the Southwest and it took me back to Albuquerque. So get your taste buds ready for the old Southwest. The decor of the restaurant was eye pleasing but yet not overbearing. The staff was friendly and kind and made you feel welcome. Side note it is always a pleasant experience to be in the presence of people who enjoy doing their job and doing what they love to do. It comes out in the service and in the food that is being cooked.

Southwest Diner is one of my favorite breakfast/brunch options in the whole metro area! I had been a few times before, but on a cold, snowy Saturday we rolled in with a big group after a move-in day. They were more than accommodating, and the hospitality from the host to the waiter was exceptional.
The food here is killer, with some great portion sizes. The Mexican slant on most of the dishes is very unique and everything I've had is great. This is definitely a breakfast/brunch/lunch joint deserving of your business!

Wow! I’m so glad we chose here for lunch at the recommendation of a friend. They were crowded and there was about a 20 minute wait. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather, and before we knew it we were seated! With how busy it was, I’m impressed that it wasn’t overly crowded inside the diner and the service was FAST. Our server was so friendly and complimented me on my Baby Yoda wallet and tattoo! They are so friendly here. I haven’t even mentioned the food—holy cow! It was DELICIOUS. Super flavorful and filling, warm and captivating. My two friends and I are chatterboxes to the max and we were all dead silent eating our food because of how much we enjoyed it! I wish I could give it 6 stars!
I can’t wait to come back, hopefully soon.

Used to come here often before we moved out to of St. Louis and have been missing it. We’re visiting town and came over and as always it’s SO GOOD! Service, food and drinks, all really good. Relaxed vibe and the food… so good! They make my favorite gravy of all times, it’s just perfect! Today was a day for sopapilla plate and it was amazing! Always coming back when I can and recommend to everyone.

We sat outside in the shade on a busy Saturday morning and enjoyed a delicious breakfast. Biscuits and gravy were delightful and they basted the eggs to perfection. Our server was cheerful and pleasant.

Life changing.... I had a full on spiritual experience over the country fried steak. The bacon was unbelievable. This dinner HAS NO RIGHT to be this good. Stop reading this, get in your vehicle, and go... Now.
Amanda
Great menu, lots of gluten free options. Kind staff. We waited maybe 15min during the brunch lunch hour on their outdoor heated patio. Well worth it!

Did someone say brunch? Southwest Diner is a great spot to grab brunch if you are looking for Tex-Mex flavors. Not all of their menu is Tex-Amex inspired, and you can find traditional brunch options like biscuits and gravy and pancakes. I would recommend adding your name to the Yelp waitlist, though, since this seems to be a popular spot, and wait times can be long. The covered patio is a great place to grab a bite to eat, and it is dog friendly!

The great - service and courtyard. The outdoor seating is beautiful. Really. Love the wood and the gating and the artwork. The waiter was stellar. We had two unruly boys and he was so easy and accomodating.
Also the sopapillas. Definitely real sopapillas and delicious.
The just ok was the breakfast. I had some spicy pork thing with eggs and tortillas. The tortillas were fresh but I felt like I had a few lil hunks of pork swimming in gravy soup. Not impressed. Potatoes room temp and its hard to screw up eggs.
I wanted to love it. Its perfectly fine.

Amazing biscuit and gravy. Best I’ve had! Was super busy on this particular Saturday morning at approximately 10am. Wait outside. Ended up getting lucky and sitting at the counter right away. Will definitely be back.

The Southwest Slinger was excellent. The biscuits and gravy are homemade and super tasty. The menu has a lot of different and special items particular to the Southwest.
Eclectic yet clean New Mexico vibe with a lot of decor. Even the staff were wearing southwest related shirts.
I would come here every week.
Coffee was great as well- bottomless Kaldis coffee- nice and strong local coffee!

The.wait times at this location are a good indication that it is worth waiting for their food! A mix of southwestern couisine and American favorites (although, does anyone skip the breakfast options no matter what time it is??). The servers are fire dly and really have a pride in where they work and serving customers. Make sure to ask for their personal recommendations! The later in the day you arrive, the longer the wait so set your alarms early!

Great place. Had the breakfast tamales and they were wonderfully prepared and arranged. Delicious, period. Had a sopapilla as well which was also excellent. Service was great. This place is a must try.

This is our #1 choice for breakfest in the entire St Louis area - we drive over 30 mins to cone here - we have tried several different items off the menu an have loved everything- their kitchen is consistent to say the least - the dining room can get loud at times, just keep that in mind but adds to the atmosphere - we will come back again and again - absolutely love it!!

Just had this gem at brunch and I was surprised by how great it was. 5 stars for superior taste to the main course and shoutout to Kayla being prompt and nice throughout the meal. My date ordered an omelet with goat cheese and breakfast potatoes which she indulged on and left barely any potatoes left to spare. We Also had bomb savory biscuit and sausage gravy that was really just complete comfort food. I ordered the breakfast style tamales pork and veggie with red and green salsa complimented with a fried egg and potatoes. Freaking ridiculous. I can't say iv had such a good brunch latin fusion fresh dish in STL in the year and a half of being here. We also ordered the Mexican donut starter with honey which was pretty boring (go with something else or just skip out on the starter, add chocolate or whipped cream to make it better maybe) but honestly the main courses had superb flavor and the place had a nice ambience (we sat outside on the covered patio) 5/5 would recommend to anybody 😋 I'll be back.

I got the spicy egg scramble with chorizo and sopapilla in the side. My girlfriend got the biscuits and gravy. Mine was good, but hers was great. Definitely getting the biscuits and gravy next time!

I can't speak for the atmosphere, because I had ordered my meal to go, but it seemed very busy & chaotic, but not in an unorganized way, just in a busy Sunday noon rush way. I overheard the hostess tell a couple in front of me that it would be an hour wait, so it is definitely very popular on Sundays. I got the cornbread pancakes, & biscuits and gravy. The cakes were amazing, and they even traveled back to my destination very well (they weren't soggy), the gravy was a little on the spicy side for my liking, but not spicy, like too much pepper, the flavor was very complex, robust, & savory. given the "Southwest" theme, one would expect there to be some heat, but I'm certainly not regretting ordering that entree. I will not hesitate to return for another visit. The staff was exceptional! I paid before arriving, and upon providing my name over the phone, the young lady insisted on calling me by my first name throughout the rest of our conversation, which is much appreciated, and shows how attentive she is. Upon arrival I was greeted with a smile, and handed my meal very quickly & sent on my way. Like I said, I will certainly try to go back soon!

Great food fabulous service outstanding prices.
Do be aware the portions are big and the plenty of taste
Sarah Fritz
The B-fast tamales are so amazing, and our son loved the pancakes. The service was great, friendly, and so extremely clean. We love trying new places and this one will not disappoint! Thanks for a great start to our day and vacation.
Andrea M.
Absolutely delicious Tex mex food and the outside is dog friendly! I Highly recommend. The pico de Gallo was so flavorful as were the salsas! The best I've had in St. Louis so far.
The food
The sausage and biscuits were the best I've ever had!
The tamale breakfast plate was flavorful and tasty!
Also, hubby liked his beer mosa!
Danilo Avelar
Super delicious food!!!
On the road from MD to Nebraska. Decided to stop by this diner... and I think it's the best decision of the trip so far. Very kind and professional staff, the ambiance is very welcoming, and the food is one of the best breakfast food I've had, ever!
Breakfast food is the remedy to all sadness.

This was my first Southwest Diner takeout order. I ordered a tall stack of the Buttermilk Cornmeal Pancakes--my go-to. Online ordering was easy to use, and my order was ready quickly.
This is by far one of my favorite meals in St. Louis, and it is easily one of my favorite breakfast meals in any city. They taste like amazing, sweet, warm cornbread just in the shape of a pancake; and, honestly, who wouldn't like pancakes and cornbread combined? The butter complements them perfectly, and you don't even need syrup. Obviously, these are better dine-in, but this is the next best option. Darn pandemic!
I highly recommend Southwest Diner. You will not be disappointed!
Brandon Kiley
Excellent food, nice casual atmosphere. I did find the service to be kind of lacking, though to be fair it was a Sunday around 10, so they were naturally quite busy. The sopapillas were unbelievable. Would highly recommend checking in online to avoid a long wait as there's not much space to wait around the restaurant.
Amanda Derr
Amazing food! Great staff. We loved the meals here. The homemade chorizo is BOMB. The torta was so yum. The chicken fried steak was great. The breakfast potatoes are simple and delicious. 10/10
Will Osiek
The Southwest Diner is the perfect neighborhood spot for breakfast and lunch. The Rocket to Bacon Land, a featured omelette, did not disappoint -- the combo of eggs, bacon, arugula and goat cheese works incredibly well together and pairs nicely with American potatoes. And if you like biscuits and gravy, the sausage gravy is an absolute delight.
Serenity Kosik
Absolutely love this place! My favorite brunch spot in STL. I brought my friends when we traveled for her bachelorette party and they thought everything was absolutely delicious! I love the new artwork outside and it is just such a great vibe ❤️
Andrea Roark
This is my new favorite breakfast place! Everything I’ve had from here is absolutely delicious. The only trick is to get here early enough you can get a table. I loved the spicy scrambled eggs and the biscuits and gravy were unique and might be my favorite I’ve ever had (sorry mom). Be sure to try their homemade sausage and sopapillas!
Valerie Ginsburg
This diner and its hueveos Ranchero and corn meal pancakes will create new cravings in your heart.
Kevin Tipton
Friendly Staff. Fast Service. Free Street Parking. Cute Patio. Cozy Atmosphere. Free Coffee while you wait. Always Crowded (For Good Reason). 20-30 Min wait Usually(I’ve seen an Hour wait). Gritty Biscuits. Tasty Gravy, Seasoned with slight heat. Country Fried Steak tender with crisp shell. Delicious Gravy. Well seasoned meat. Small portions but great flavor. Home Fries. We’re crisp but tasted old (cold) just average overall. The Diner overall was a delicious treat :)
Bill Belgeri
Great atmosphere and family owned. The dining room was busy but not crowded. I had the Medio and it was delicious!
Mister Jon
Fabulous food. Large portions. Very reasonable prices. Cheap drinks, including x3 Corona and $2 PBR (there are other choices too and mixed drinks). I definitely will come back. The dining experience is that yours a little squished together with other patrons. It's a lively atmosphere. There is only on street parking.
Amy beth Hoff
Best breakfast I've had!
Employees Are so nice, helpful, and super friendly!! If I could I'd eat their everyday!
Chris Gregory
High quality, big portions, diverse menu, great service. Pancakes are legendary. Enchilada breakfast burritos were great.
Steven Kidder
Wow! The food is always top notch. Our sever Nicole was so fun! I come here every time I stop in St Louis.
Derek Henscheid
Fun little diner with a southwestern flair. Excellent coffee and cornmeal pancakes. The bus outside has a drink bar and complimentary coffee and cookies for while you wait. Wife had the Omelet with goat cheese and it was awesome. I had the fiery eggs dish with the thickest bacon I've ever had. The home fries were crunchy and delicious
Dan Greg
I was having a bad day and needed some breakfast. Came here to try it out and was blessed. The employees are so nice and treat you well. The coffee is Kaldi’s and endlessly refillable. They even give you one in a to go cup at the end! What a nice place. Their style of scrambled eggs is tasty and spicy, perfect for the morning. The bacon is nice and big (as you can see) and everything’s homemade! I recommend the biscuits and gravy with eggs on top.
Phillip P.
Basic but exceptional. Ingredients are fresh, menu items approachable but delicious and with an authentic touch. Burrito is a little heavy on the potatoes. Sopapillas are fluffy and crisp. Coffee is good, too. Fun bus for cocktails and coffee.
Ryan Gomez
I lived in Albuquerque for many years, and while I am no New Mexican food expert, I was pleasantly surprised by how authentically southwestern the fare was here. Never thought I’d get decent green chile or a proper sopapilla with honey in the Midwest, but here it is!
Cyndi Ann Cross
We transplanted to St Louis from New Mexico 5.5 yrs ago - and I am a total *New* Mexican food snob (don't get me started!). Well, until today, the *best* Mexican food, came out of MY kitchen.
Guys, Southwest Diner knows what green chile is (😃!) and *where* it should come from (Hatch, of course!). Even better is, that the green chile actually had some "bite" to it ...
Y'all, this place rocks. It's also super busy. We had a 30-45 min. wait - but it was completely worth it! Try this place. Keep them in business. Seriously.
Mark T
Had a great breakfast here after a long run at Forest Park. I had and Country Fried Steak with the hot eggs and a side pancake. Food was great and the server Adam did a great job making me felt welcome. Oh, the pancake was almost a cornbread texture, very interesting and good. Loved how the syrup bottles were old cook bottles.
Dale Carlson
Awesome place for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. Be prepared to wait on the weekends although here was no wait when we left at 11:15. Place Is small so you wait outside. They have an old bush parked next the restaurant where you can sit and wait. Heated for the winter. They have complimentary coffee and you can purchase beer and cocktails as well for the wait. Service is great. The Southwest flavors to the food are wonderful.
Amanda Reed
It was delicious. I got the huevos rancheros and made it a Supreme. Also tried the sopapillas. Both were great. The spice from the "christmas" style chilies was amazing. I also loved the simplicity of the sopapillas of just fried dough and honey. Kinda like a less messy beignet. Will definitely be back to try more.
Jeremy McGinty
Always an amazing place to go. I moved to NYC 7 years ago and now moving to Denver, had to stop in STL for breakfast here. Covid or not, food is spectacular
James Patterson
Busy place...worth the wait. Staff was super friendly even though they were jam packed. Food was absolutely delicious.
Kessashun Arthur
I haven't gotten to explore much of the brunch menu, but they have a great mix of Mexican and traditional American breakfast dishes. You can expect lots of flavor and spice from the meats and savory dishes. The biscuits and gravy are superb! The prices are beyond reasonable, especially for drinks, compared to most brunch places. You can expect a wait, but it'll be well worth it!
Maddy Wiering
I love Southwest. The first time I went here (I’m a New Mexican living in the Midwest and always hunting for decent green chiles) I literally cried of happiness. The chiles are hot, the food is flavorful, the coffee is endless. Pictured are the breakfast burrito (with cheese and extra chile sauce) and the huevos rancheros (supreme). I’ve also had their posole, scrambles, sopapillas, nothing disappoints.
Shea Brown
I like this place, I've been at least 10 times ...a little lite on African Americans and a few servers seem to be dismissive but I didn't get a bad vibe overall, my food and specialty drink recommended by a server was on point.Im going to give them another chance
Dave Foster
I come here all the time. Great food, great service, I'm never dissatisfied. The Grits on Fire and Green Chile Cheeseburger are my standout favs, but I've tried most of the menu and never had a bad meal here. If you come during brunch on the weekends during peak time, the place is packed so expect a wait. It's totally worth it.
Nicole Baumgarten
I've only been here a couple of times but both times it was really delicious! The bus where you wait for your table, because there's always a wait, is decked out in a southwestern style where you can get coffee and a drink if you'd like. Only four stars because there's only street parking and both times the service has been kind of meh. Nothing to complain about at all, though.
You can skip the wait by using the no wait app, but really, who doesn't want to hang out in a cool bus?
Chris Wymer
I ordered the Omelet with Home made Sausage, Ghost Pepper cheese and avocado. The sausage was so spicy I couldn't even taste the ghost pepper cheese. Other than that it was excellent.
Max Bemberg
All around awesome! AAA rating. Long wait if you come during peak hours but there's a cute bus with free coffee and a lively intersection to help pass the time. Food arrives quickly and tasty. I recommend the pozole for a hearty and warming appetizer followed by the huevos rancheros, breakfast scramble or burrito. It's all good really!
Jason Wirick
My go-to for a weekend late breakfast. Nostalgic atmosphere, friendly folks, great food.
Michelle Salois
food, decor and people are great. but it is the LOUDEST bouncy acoustics of any place I've ever bend. I can only do pickup
Kai Hudek
Smothered burrito was tasty and filling. Breakfast potatoes were perfect. Pass on the sopapillas. Could have had more flavor and definitely could have been spicier. Coffee, ambiance, and service were good.
Rage1on
Love this place. Anytime we can we go for excellent food. My favorite is the tamale breakfast.
C dM
Love the New Mexican twist...the spicy biscuits and gravy, chorizo, a bit of corn in the delicious pancakes, sopapillas, seasoned potatoes! Wow! Best Breakfast in town! Standard fare also on the menu, but be adventurous! Yum!
David Hasler
This is a must stop if you have time for a short drive for breakfast. The food is spicy but not overdone. Everything was so well done. I was just blown away at everything I ordered. Even the biscuit for my gravy was unique and tasty. If you want special and unique then go here. If you want bland and ordinary then pick anything else.
Derek Knight
This busy local diner has a great selection of breakfast dishes many with a Southwest twist. The decor is interesting and if you have to wait (and you often do on a Weekend!) they have a school bus out back whee you can have a drink while you wait for your table.
Seth Botts
Great breakfast spot. Just make sure to go during the week to avoid a wait. If you want to go on the weekend, make sure to plan accordingly and get your name on the list or be prepared for a two hour wait!
Doug
Must visit when in St. Louis. Visited on a Saturday morning recently for breakfast. There is usually at least a short wait but it is worth it. I have never been disappointed with anything I have tried here. Today we had the breakfast burrito and the Huevos Rancheros and they were delicious. If you like southwest style breakfast/lunch items and cool spaces you need to try Southwest diner.
Chuck Reed
Wow what a great place to have breakfast, huge portions and prices not to bad either! Had a great time , would highly recommend to anyone!
Janet
Went here on a Sunday at 1030am, was quoted 1.5 hour wait (which was accurate). There’s a little bus where you can get free sample size coffee or buy bloody Mary’s and mimosas while you wait. Inside only has tables that hold up to four people so definitely would not come here with more than 4. Had the Southwest Slinger, upgraded eggs to cheesy Jon style for $1.50 - delicious. also got the Road to Bacon which was amazing due to the goat cheese. Chose the biscuit for the side and added side of gravy (extra $3). Will definitely come back to try all the other staples but will try to come at a less busy time.
Kristin Cryer
Best biscuits and gravy in STL!!! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu (tamales!! Slinger!!! Sopapillas!! Bacon!!), But those b's and g's will make you want to sing out in praise to the gods of breakfast!
Jacie Woolf
My wife and I came for breakfast/brunch around 10:30 am on a Saturday. We were told there would be a 45-60 minute wait but that we could check out the bus in the back with a bar and complimentary coffee. The bartender in the (air conditioned and so so cute!) bus made a great michelada and coffee with baileys. The wait time flew by and the food was amazing. I highly recommend the tots, we couldn’t eat them fast enough!
Tristan Dauer
My family’s favorite brunch spot in the St. Louis area. There’s usually a long wait of an hour or more, so make sure you visit during non-peak hours or call ahead to make a reservation. Try the tots!
Dan Holte
Great breakfast. Make sure you get there early. They fill up fast.
Sarah Boothe
Just ate here with my fiancé and we were blown away by the breakfast! I had the Rocket and he had the Fiery Scrambler. Both were immaculate! Will absolutely return here soon!
Spencer
Amazing! The restaurant is nicely decorated and has an outdoor seating area too. Everything I ordered was delicious.
Katie Bellis
My fav brunch in STL, fast friendly service, consistently delicious food, flavors you can't get anywhere else in town.
Pierre Vreyen
Hungry for the best pizza in town? Don't stop here! If you want southwestern kind of food however, this is where you should be. The food is awesome and so is the service.
Kyle Neely
Can be a long wait for bunch, make sure to do the waitlist on Yelp. Totally worth it. One of the best smash burgers in STL.
Erica Lippitt
Delicious southern style brunch! We got drinks from an old school bus made over on the inside while we waited.
Bert Reply
Grateful they are open for dine in again. The best southwest diner in the world. Also inexpensive for what they serve. Locally sourced for many items. The food is very flavorful and cooked properly. Mostly cooked from scratch, not out of a box. The servers are professional as well as friendly. The first thing I noticed when I went back at a busy time, was I never had to look around to get my coffee or water filled as I usually do in places I have been dining at since SW Diner closed. The servers are attentive and quick. I Highly Recommend Southwest Diner. Oh, and incidentally, the best corn pancakes ever!
Millie G
Delicious food! Beware the wait can be pretty long for a weekend brunch but waiting in the bus is the coolest thing!
Leigh M
Delicious! Worth the wait. Use the NoWait app. No kids menu. They do have chocolate chip pancakes for kids, ours ate two!! Pancakes are a sweet corn meal. We really enjoyed the Southwest flavored dishes too. We are going back again tomorrow!
Abel Teller
Long wait on Saturday.
Waited 45 mins before seated.
Total 1 hour and 15 before being served.
Food was good.

Things we loved about Southwest Diner:
- The bacon is perfectly cooked. It is super crispy, but falls apart in your mouth. That's part preparation, part quality, and they knock both out of the park.
- The "home fries" you can see in my picture are also perfectly prepared. They are crispy outside, salted with (I think) kosher salt, and delicious.
- The pancakes are made with cornmeal, and they're just fantastic. I would love it if they offered a super sweet honey butter in addition to the standard butter/syrup option, but that's just a thought, not a knock on their current taste.
- They serve Kaldi's, which is common around STL, but many places put too many grounds in their coffee and it tastes way too strong. Not Southwest Diner. They put in just the right amount of coffee.
- The bus. There's not enough room to wait inside, so they put a bus outside to wait in. They have coffee in there and water. It's not as nice as waiting room inside, but it adds character and I found that the people waiting had fun talking in there about the bus.
- The music. This cannot be overstated. The music is apparently a playlist that the servers just build every day. It's determined by whomever is working at the time, but I was blown away with it when we were there. Our waitress said that they sometimes have themes - bad 80s music, songs you sing in the shower, etc. - but today it was just whatever they felt like. We heard A Tribe Called Quest "Can I Kick It" followed by Portugal The Man "Feel It Still", amongst many other great songs. I imagine it will be hit or miss, but it was definitely a hit with us.
Jenn L
had their Jonathan's famous fiery scramble, nothing too special. their eggs are mediocre, spicy and cheesy are semi-good at best (3/5⭐), and their homemade sausage are kinda gross tasting (1/5⭐). was ok if I eat it with the eggs I guess, but not on its own. I had onion rings to replace the fries, which was good (4/5⭐). and freshly made sopapilla to replace toast, which is the highlight eating here (4/5⭐).
I came on a weekend, so it was pretty crowded.
waitress and waiter are nice.
Kevin Logan
Fantastic food. Very friendly and attentive staff. Sat at the counter. Been here multiple times, and get the breakfast burrito every time. Easily one of the best in the city. Kaldi coffee is a huge plus.
Jane Marie
Southwest Diner is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the StL area. If feeling really crazy (and hungry) order the sopapillas as an appetizer before even looking at the menu. Yum!
Chris
New Mexican Breakfast Burrito was amazing.
Ruby Guerra
The food was definitely worth the wait!! The buttermilk cornmeal pancakes were divine! 👌 Also thought the decor was cute! 🤗 …
Justin Fred
Got back to town and was so happy I was able to get a meal here! Love it! Grits on Fire, Pancakes, Breakfast Burritos, and Bloody Mary’s. Just can’t go wrong.
Jake Harris
The food was good, but the friendly staff was even better. The service is legendary. Oh, and they played awesome music (if you like 90s alternative).
Kate B
Great service today. Fish fry menu Fridays during Lent! The pancakes are crunchy and soft and giant just like always. The rocket to bacon is delicious! The pungency of the arugula and goat cheese balance out the fat and flavor of the bacon perfectly.
Tony Heredia
The only place I have ever had carne adovado outside of Albuquerque, and it did not disappoint. The red sauce was delightful, coffee was great, and service was prompt!
Marcus Bellamy
It was fine. I was expecting more substance from their pancakes; apart from the texture and mouthfeel, there were just regular pancakes. My main beef is that the online menu has the option for added real maple syrup for a dollar more. Well, I was real mad when we opened our take out to find real corn syrup instead. All in all, probably wouldn’t go back, but it was food for the morning.
Jon Brian
One of my all-time favorite spots. This place is a vibe 🤙
John Hoyt
Has that "old-time" diner feel with a cool Southwest motif. Excellent food and service with a menu full of good options.
Ryan K
Always have a good experience whenever I go here. They have good menu choices. Breakfast burrito is my favorite.
Marina Boegge
Amazing place with even more amazing and outstanding customer service. Food is super delicious, just a great place for breakfast. You can tell they care. Must go to. 10/10
Ron Roberts
Lovely breakfast.. Nice portions, good tastes.. Kind service..
Thomas Carver
45 minute wait to get in the door when we went. It was a weekday holiday, so a lot of people off work but we weren't prepared for that.
Dean Wilson
The best breakfast in St. Louis. It's laid back, super friendly, and incredibly delicious. Also, they have a great waiting area in a modified old school bus with free coffee to pass the time.
m jr
I'd love to see a more authentic chile verde, but this one is the best I've had outside of NM and CO. Always great. Viva SWDiner!
Mike Flavin
Have never had a bad experience here in the ten years they have been open. Food has always been excellent, and the staff always friendly.
Debra Walker
What an Awesome diner. It was absolutely what this girl needed. Only open for breakfast and lunch. Closes at 2pm. Our server Adam R. was the best. Started with a Bloody Mary or could of had a Bloody Maria that's made with tequila. So GOOD. I chose a breakfast burrito and had Homemade Chorizo and Avocado put in. Adam said it's their best seller. I know why. So big I could finish it.
Only a few miles from Barnes Jewish Hospital. So worth it.

Great food, huge portions at a reasonable price. Friendly atmosphere. DIne LOCAL!!!
Danielle Marie
Wow. Southwest Diner is easily my favorite breakfast place in the entire city and I've only been here once. I ordered the huevos rancheros and it had a 1-2 punch of flavor and heat. Absolutely loved it. My husband loved it too and we both agreed it was our favorite restaurant of the 5 or 6 we tried that week during our staycation. My only regret is not ordering 10 days worth of food to take with me.
Clare Ralston Hills
Amazing traditional diner. Great staff, amazing food and milkshakes to die for. Highly recommended
Alexander Smith
Always great food and friendly staff. It's the best southwest food in town. Go for brunch, and get the grits on fire, or a smothered breakfast burrito, Christmas style! It you're a bloody Mary person, you should have one here. I have never had anything here that failed to impress me.
Right now, they're doing takeout out walk up service with patio seating. Not sure what the winter plan is.
Cindy p
Being from the South to find this diner was fantastic ! The food is delicious 😋 and worth eating it.
Jeremy Brandt
Love this place for weekend brunch! Great food and cocktails too.
Nick Teal
I had the breakfast enchiladas, and an order of sopapillas. Both were very good, I look forward to going back! Inside was packed, but it looked like there was outdoor seating that was more chill.
Deborah Krause
Breakfast at 1:30 pm this afternoon was wonderful. Delicious Bloody Mary and wonderful eggs, bacon, potatoes, and cornmeal pancakes. Coffee was excellent. Service was friendly and efficient.

This place has a very cute and interesting atmosphere both in and outside. We've only been there for breakfast, however, the menu looks very appetizing for meals taken later in the day. I would like to return in the future for either lunch or dinner, but I will say that the breakfast menu is just not for me.
Marcus Fryer
One of the best places we’ve ever eaten in St. Louis! Very great staff and delicious brunch food. Definitely be coming back! The huevos rancheros are delicious.
Dustin James
As a vegetarian finding this place was a lucky find. So many options to choose from and portions and price are perfect. A must try.
Kai Anthony
Ordered before they opened and it was ready when I arrived at the quoted time. Amazing coffee. Would go back just for that!
Got the breakfast burrito with queso and chorizo. It might be spicy, I thought to myself, but be adventurous! It was in fact too spicy to thoroughly enjoy, though that's more on my tolerance than their culinary skills.
My only wish is that they'd throw a few hot pepper icons next to certain dishes for weaklings such as myself.
Sherri Thompson
Great Food! SW Diner will be our home diner. Friendly staff and delicious food!
Eduardo Sequeira
Very good Mexican style brunch.
Dede Townsend
It was my first time & it won't be the last! I had the biscuits and gravy & it was delicious! What a cute restaurant. And the staff were lovely.
MM Harmon
Outstanding! Get your Breakfast Burrito enchilada-style, with the housemade chorizo. Biscuits and gravy are legit, especially when you add an egg or two on top.
Daryl Meese
One of my Favorite breakfast spots. The eggs are always cooked perfectly, the bacon is thick and crispy, and the sausage gravy is amazing. Seriously, for over a decade my eggs have been right EVERY TIME.
It's located on Southwest Avenue, and the food is Southwest themed. So it has a little kick sometimes, but it's always delicious.
Cal Scones
This place is rad, last time I went it was super busy on a Sunday morning (as is totally expected) and we were seated, served, in and out within like 45 minutes.
Josh Mandelberger
Finally had a chance to try this place and was pleased. Good coffee, the breakfast burrito was delicious and their chorizo had a nice spice to it.
Alex Garcini
Maybe the best breakfast burrito in the city? I haven’t found a better one! Upgrade it with some chorizo, and there’s plenty of veggie options for folks who don’t do meat. Great patio seating for when the weather’s nice!
Samantha Beja
This is the best brunch I’ve had in St. Louis. Their food is really flavorful, the staff is super attentive, and the vibe is awesome. My favorites were the pancakes and Jonathan’s Fiery Scramble. Don’t forget to try the biscuits!
Adrian Shelton
I consumed probably the biggest stack of pancakes I've had in a long time. Big as the pan used to make them. I think "those potatoes" could've been better, but other than that I loved the family-owned/operated atmosphere in a kind of old western town. The staff was great, coming around asking how we were liking everything, offering more coffee and refilling beverages. This is the kind of cafe style place I like to eat at before heading to the Grand Canyon. They give you good large portions for bargain prices, ensuring you get your full money's worth. Nearly seven hours later I'm not the least bit hungry.
Andy Holman
Very comfortable outdoor dining experience for the Covid concerned. Wonderful burger (I recommend the double), perfect Bloody Mary and an easy ordering system. We felt very safe and we will be back more often.
Cathy Holtwick
Had the Huevos Ranchero Deluxe !! Chefs kiss 💋 it hit THE spot !
Nick Hutson
The spicy bloody Marys were pretty good. The food on the other hand, I found to be rather bland. Maybe it was what I ordered. Idk. On first impression, not sure about the hype here.
Sara Jordan
Great food! My husband and I got the burrito. His was with enchilada sauce and mine with queso. So good. We got the boys the pancakes. They didn't like the cornmeal cakes but they're used to buttermilk ones which isn't the restaurant's fault. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The Aztec hot chocolate was delicious as well as their fresh oj.
Elliot Cook
Shield generators appear to have been restored effectively. Not a single AT-AT attack throughout our entire meal. Great carne adovado, too!
Tim Graham
Have tried on and off over the years since living in the area and they were always super busy. Finally had my southwest virginity taken and it was well worth the wait. One of the best country fried steaks I've had in a long time and the gravy was deliciously unique
Sinem Altunbas
This place is my favorite breakfast spot in St. Louis! Amazing food with super kind staff!
Danielle King
Yummy, inexpensive, and super friendly staff! I only wish the coffee were better.
Erick
The breakfast tamale plate was fantastic! Curbside service was streamlined and quick.
Scott Eisbrenner
Good food nothing special
very clean
Mitchell “BurDock Root” Bauman
🔥🔥🔥🔥 My wife loves the Avocado salad.. and I enjoy the country fried steak. If they have ya outside I recommend bringing you own drink.. coronavirus done messed up free refills. Not today!!!!! Got me paying 3.00 bucks for a pop... but I will buy that food all day long... keep up the good work. See ya again soon.✌🏽 …
Alyssa Carter
What an excellent brunch we had at Southwest Dinner. There will be a wait on weekends although it was pretty opened when we finished around 11:15 on a Sunday. You can’t really wait for a table inside. They have an old bus that is heated and cooled to wait on. There is complementary coffee and you can purchase beer and brunch cocktails while you wait for your table. Service was excellent as was the food. Can’t wait to go back.
Eric Palmer
What a great place for breakfast!! I have been to Southwest 4 times I think and they keep me coming back. The service is great. The wait is usually about 30 minutes or less if you go in the late morning but it is definitely worth the wait. Even though they are always super packed and busy, I feel like the staff still treats me like I'm the only one there. The decor is a little goofy but it's a fun place. The food is outstanding!!! I love the southwest inspired dishes. The cornmeal pancakes and homemade sausage is amazing. I especially love the ghost pepper jack cheese option on the food, it really spices things up and tastes great. Never had a bad experience here and will continue going.
Nicole du Maine
Consistently one of the best brunch places in the city. I had my usual, the Jonathan's fiery scramble. It did not disappoint. They make their own sausage and it's absolutely amazing. The prices are affordable, the people are super nice, the drink selection is great, the coffee is awesome, I could go on and on and on about this place. You have to check this place out.
Austin Miller
Great food and a neat atmosphere!
Nata Ginay
Ok... My boyfriend and I stopped by for a breakfast last Monday. To our surprise they had only outdoors sitting available and wasn't accepting cash payments. Not a big problem. So, ordered our food and waited at the table. In about 10 min a server moseyed up and drops ( literally) a brown bag on our table. No good morning, no here's your food, just shoved it on. Turns around and walks away - on the back of his jacket there is a picture of Satanic paraphernalia ( no, I'm not making it up). Yeah, I get it, freedom of speech and all, but shouldn't it be exercised outside of work? It can easily turn away potential customers. This attitude ("don't give a damn") sure turned us away, we won't be back, not anytime soon anyway. Sad, we've been enjoying this place for years, the food is always excellent.
I hope the owner/-s rev up their employees' customer service.
Adie Bennett
I've heard about this place for years and decided to check it out. Went on a nice day and sat on their large patio after ordering and while eating.
The food was fantastic and spicy and my friends strawberry 🍓 cornbread pancakes were delicious and perfect. Will definitely be back.
Torie Lynne Lumsden Null
Eclectic style, smelled good but didn't eat here
D Par
While they have amazing potential, I feel it falls short. We usually try to eat clean and local. We thought this fit the bill, but while the quality of food is there, the overwhelming amount of heavy grease is as well. Everything but the omelette was greasy. The tots were good, but greasy. The goat cheese omelette was really good and the French fries were tasty. The biscuits and gravy were a little meat heavy and a tad greasy. The pulled pork breakfast was extremely rich and the home fries were greasy. I don't think this is bad food, just not something our stomachs can handle very easy. The staff was decent.
Andrea Bruemmer
Great relaxed atmosphere. Went in have a quick brunch bite with the palio and it was perfect. He loved the biscuits and gravy.
Bunch`s Diesel Performance
Best Breakfast in St Louis!! Try it out
Cindy Belgeri
Great atmosphere. Great food. Personality throughout and personable crew abounds. I enjoy the staff as well as talking to other guests. Never disappoints in flavor or food. Jonathon the owner makes a point to greet most guests. The staff hustle to keep the flow moving and keeps the guests happy and satisfied. Easy app to get in line so you don't have to wait. It's a perfect rep for the city. St. Louis is known for their individually owned restaurants or mom and pop shops. Southwest diner is a great success. It gives hope that someone never has to endure the chain breakfast again.
Sarah Thacker
Absolutely worth a visit, and soon. Highlights included the breakfast burrito with chorizo smothered christmas-style, the barbacoa, and the cornmeal pancakes. Go soon and go hungry - you won't be disappointed!
Adam Sessa
Got the something with bacon in the name omelette with hash browns, my wife got biscuits and gravy, and oj. Was at the window pickup, no indoors due to covid. All food was amazing, definitely recommend. Currently patio seating.
Drew Crowley
Probably my favorite place to eat breakfast in St Louis.
The food is really tasty. I usually get an omelette with their homemade sausage (which is excellent).
The staff is super friendly. I love the decor. I've never had a bad experience.
Bug
Great place! Amazing teamwork on behalf of the staff to ensure tables are cleaned up right away and they can get people sat in a timely manner!
-Buttermilk CORNBREAD pancakes!!!! Game changer! Seriously are amazing and a must have if you've never been.
- Country Fried Steak - gravy on top is to Die for! I had over east eggs which when ordering in any establishment is a toss! They we're a bit rubbery but honestly this dish was the best I've had!
Visit, enjoy, & dont forget to grab a free sticker on your way out!
Andrew Sidel
The food and service were top notch! The fiery scramble and packages are always delicious, and the prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. Love it!
Jeffrey
Since the day they opened the doors to today, and I'm sure well beyond, this is a favorite place to eat in all of the city. Unsuspectingly the food is far surpassing of "diner" food so don't let the name fool you. This is truly great food and at diner prices. Some years ago they featured an Avocado Salad, essentially a split avocado with panko over a bed of shredded lettuce some some southwest style sauce, and it was amazing. Thankfully, it was decided to put this full-time on the menu. If you stop by, which you should, then get the avocado salad. You can also order some select beer and liquor drinks though this is not a bar. Five stars!
Jessie Summers
Only 4 stars because the price and hype are a bit annoying. When we arrived at 11am on a Tuesday I wasn't expecting such a big crowd. Definitely a hipster hang out just a heads up. The server was cordial and brought our drinks right away but it took a long time to place and receive our orders. I was just beginning to think we had made a mistake in coming there when our food arrived and oh my gawd. The food was fabulous!! It was delicious and somehow perfectly cooked. I got home fries and not a single one was undercooked or soggy. They really know what they're doing in the kitchen. Only 4 stars because the prices are kind of high for the type of food you get but its absolutely worth visiting at least once. I would recommend calling in a to go order to avoid the long wait times.
Sarah Hernandez
I really enjoyed this place! The 45 min wait was worth it. The coffee is so good, the PANCAKES - I echo everyone else who raves about how good they are. I had the famous scramble with chorizo and it was very good. Portions are bigger than appears on the photos. I wasn't that impressed with the barbacoa fries but everything else was good. Our server was very friendly and gave us to-go cups of our drinks.
Dorian Foster
They pay their employees well, excellent. Food is average. Had chicken fried steak rhat had pork sausage gravy. No one expects that, I don't like pork. I didn't complain, but not a good look. Hash browns were not seasoned. Eggs were good.
Sara Durka
I will tell you one thing, the flavor did not go south on the palate. A bit of a Native American flare with hipster/60s vibes. You'd think this wasn't the best combo but this is truly the place to be. The food is amazing. Go for the tots if you enjoy something a little fried. The staff is warm, friendly, and welcoming. Will be returning if I find myself back here.
Jamie Yang
Passed through St. Louis on the way back to Chicago and ordered online at 8:30am with an estimated pick up time of 9:35am. At exactly 9:35, I received a text and our food was ready! Grabbed a seat outside to eat quickly before heading out. I was impressed with how accurate the timing was and Covid procedures. The Grits on Fire were 🔥. Perfect portion where I don't need to be rolled out, and the beef was so tender. My eggs over medium were also cooked perfectly. Boyfriend got the BLTJ, and it had plenty of thick-cut bacon. Feeling lucky that this was our pit-stop breakfast!
Just4Fun
This is my favorite restaurant in St. Louis! You will be pleasantly surprised with excellent food and service from a staff that obviously loves their jobs! We’ve been patrons of this restaurant for several years and the quality of food and service is ALWAYS consistently excellent!
We purchase several gift cards every year for friends who have not tried Southwest Diner just because we know they will be happy! The staff is like a small family.
Be prepared to wait for a table because it’s very popular! But, YOU won’t be disappointed in the ONLY true New Mexican food menu in all of St. Louis!
John Alexander
Can this place get any better? Answer : No.
They are awesome. Get the biscuits and gravy to repair your soul.
The Beave
My favorite diner, what used to be a hidden gem has gotten so popular they've added a bus transformed into a cozy waiting area, complete with coffee bar. Whether having diner classics or their namesake style dishes, you won't be disappointed. My only complaint is that they aren't open later so I could visit them more often.
Ehlowyn Stapp
Best place ever! I miss my home of Albuquerque,NM. This restaurant is like going into my own little peice of heaven. Not to mention the food is AMAZING!
Ben Daniel
One of my absolute favorite breakfast spots in St. Louis, and that's saying something because we've got an over abundance of great breakfast eats.
Despite the fact that the food selection unique (in the best way) it still feels like comfort food. Great vegetarian and vegan options(their veggie chorizo is on point), but plenty of actual breakfast meats for the carnivores. And the service is always top notch.
Call ahead on the weekends because the waits can be long (most other days you'll get seated right away), but it's worth every bite.
Amanda Mensen
I love finding local diners to eat at, especially for breakfast. My husband and I went together. We had coffee(not bad, just standard coffee) we shared tots which were amazing. We both had the enchilada style breakfast burrito, very good but not the best breakfast burrito I've ever had, definitely worth the money though and a lot of food. Friendly staff and a good vibe. Customers were waiting at the door before it opened, so they have a good following. The place filled up within 15 minutes of opening, still had prompt service, with 2 separate people checking on us. It's a 30 minute drive for me, but we will definitely be back.
Julie Murphy
Did a to go lunch and was able to eat at the picnic tables up front. It has been a while since I was here last, but everything was as good as I remember. Fantastic biscuits and gravy, Jon’s scrambled eggs, and Xmas style enchilada sauce is the only way to go!
Don Kaffenberger
Interesting place. The menu selections are interesting as well. If you have time, I would suggest that you give it a shot. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Brian Ferrari
Good place with good food! It's a different take on breakfast food.
Christa Byrnes
French toast was really good. Love the atmosphere and design. Got in pretty quick as it was very busy. Not a fan of the cornmeal pancakes, but my bf said they were good. Not bad for the price.
Kelly
Amazing! One of the best Bloody Marys I've had--probably because it had lots of hot sauce, olives and a giant piece of bacon in it. The stacked chicken enchiladas were superb. Staff was super sweet and accommodating, even on a busy Sunday. I definitely recommend!
Micheal Rush
Can I tell you how happy I am that my favorite diner is again doing regular takeout service from their full menu! I have missed my queso smothered breakfast burrito so much! My daughter polished off her entire slinger, a rarity in normal times but we were taking advantage of the takeout service for the first time post Covid! My wife delighted in her breakfast sandwich with the always perfect home fries! Ordering from the website was easy, pick up came out exactly at the time promised, you pick up your order from a picnic table where the waiting room bus used to be. The food was packaged in aluminum take out containers so even recyclable! Also kept the food when placed in a cooler on the way home, just about as good as fresh from the kitchen. So glad they are surviving the pandemic! Please support your local favorites, these small businesses and places we love need us now more than ever!
Robert Moreland
Great place for breakfast! The tamales on tuesday are amazing! And most items have just enough spice to kickstart your body for the day. You can't go wrong for choosing this place for breakfast or lunch. Only down side is place is a little small and there can be a wait some days, but well worth it.
Liz Deken
The food is good, and the service is too. Great if you like spicy, though they do have not spicy food too. The biscuits and gravy are great. The décor is decidedly southwestern, so if you like that you'll love the look. Gets full quickly so go early or plan on waiting.
Scott Phillips
Pretty good experience my first time at this place. It is popular so you'll likely have a wait a little. They have a bus around the corner of the building where you can get coffee while you wait. Meal was good and servings were large. I was introduced to sopapilla here and loved it. There's a lot of spicy options if that's how you roll during breakfast.
Anne
I went here for breakfast with a friend and we were seated at the bar. Service was friendly and fast despite it being very busy. We both got breakfast burritos which were tasty and I also got the pickle fries appetizer. The chipotle sauce that came with it for dipping was very spicy! Don’t forget to take a picture of yourself with the cactus out front.
Jason Wever
One of my favourite brunch places in the city. Amazing, unique southwestern food. Very friendly, helpful staff. Try the sopapillas, I guarantee you'll love them. It's a fairly small place and very popular, so get there early or expect a wait. They have a converted school bus waiting room with coffee and cocktails! Quick turnover so you usually don't wait long
chris mattler
I like the unique menu that focuses on breakfast and diner food. The food itself seems to be geared toward decadent early morning munchies. Since things work, some things - for me - may require a little bit more culinary focus instead of creativity in order to be a bit better.
All-in-all a nice place for a drinks and unique food. They have a good variety of vegetarian items.
Dawn Riske
Love the outdoor eating area. Delicious food, great service.
Caleb Colley
Max was awesome and his burrito suggestion was top notch. Who ever thought of putting enchilada sauce on a breakfast burrito deserves a raise. Atmosphere is very laid back and prices are very decent. This will be a regular stop on my trips to St. Louis.
Keep up the hard work and great service.
Delmor Donald
We went for a late afternoon brunch. My brother got some amazing Huevos Rancheros and I got biscuits and gravy + a chocolate milkshake (because why not at 11AM). We also got the appetizer of fried tater tot deliciousness! Those were absolutely delicious and an awesome item for a diner. I'd never had anything like it before. They were like tater tots meets pizza rolls meets ravioli meets cheese. Loved them
Janis Taylor
Be prepared for generous portions of delicious food and the best brewed coffee for miles around. A short stack of cornmeal buttermilk pancakes is filling. Their popular breakfast burrito could feed a table of 4. Every choice on the menu, a winner. Long wait times for weekend brunch, so go early or during a week day if you can.
Jim Halley
Heard a lot about this place. Nice decor. Had breakfast, the bacon omelet. Good cheese flavor, but the bacon was a too thin for my liking. Coffee ok. Not the most attentive server. Ample portion on small plates though. Fairly priced. Won't rush to return, not that unique or exceptional.
Clifton Hyatt
One of StL's best casual breakfast spots. They add a nice Southwestern flair to their offerings. Prices are hella reasonable, staff is fast and professional.
Now with expanded outside seating courtesy of Covid.
josh wattler
This place is full of surprises, and I can't believe I waited so long to try them! I love your basic biscuits and gravy, but there's had so much more flavor without being spicy - it's like no one else is even trying by comparison! The burrito was filling with each ingredient hitting your palate, I highly recommend going enchilada style with their homemade chorizo! That's just it, the chorizo, the biscuits, the sopas - everything is homemade there. We expected the French toast to be good since it's hard to screw up, but it might be the best we've ever had; never would have thought that coming from a place specializing in southwest dishes!
Dan King
Atmosphere can loud and crowded, so took 1 star off. But food was 5 stars, prices are great, and the place is fun and quirky. We had breakfast, and you should go early. Portions are reasonable, and the flavors very authentic!
Aaron Barbee (A-A-Ron)
I had to give this place a 5 - they serve breakfast anytime they're open. :)
Seriously, though, they have very friendly folks working here and the food is good. The dining room is not very big, so you'd better get there stupid early for lunch (11am on a weekday?) or plan on waiting for a while.
I forget what the on-site menu called it (not on the website version) but I had the omelet with ghost pepper cheese. It's got a kick. I opted for a half-order of biscuits and gravy too. Eggs were a bit 'stiff', but tasted good. Biscuit was fluffy. Gravy had good consistency and taste. Fried potatoes were just ok, but I'm not a huge fan.
I'm totally going back again. :)
Josh Nast
Love going here for breakfast after a rough night shift. They cocktails are reverent and very reasonably priced. I've been there a few times now and haven't had a bad meal yet. Try the beer-mosa for a twist. The bloody Mary's are amazing too!
Thrifty Unicorns
Fun eclectic place with great menu options. Tastefully decorative in a light humors way that won't leave you bored. Nice menu options for those who eat meat and those who are vegetarian. VERY attentive staff! We we're given large cups of cold water upon seating (always an A+) our waiter was courteous and alway had his eye on our table, clearing away empty dishes quickly, refilling our waters and coffee, and was present if we needed anything, but not in an overbearing annoying way. There we're lots of wait staff on hand which tells me that this business cares about it's employees and does not over work them. Different people seat you, different people wait on you, different people bring you your food. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Food was appropriately priced to portion size. It was kept simple to minimize food waste (which is always A+++!) If you're traveling through (like we were) and want some breakfast nibbles this is a good place, but try to get there early cuz I here it fills up fast!
Mel s
Great meal had the omelette!
Kevin
Excellent food with a southwestern flair. The only negatives are the wait time to be seated and the noise level. However, they make the wait tolerable (dare I say even fun?) by providing an old bus to wait on which is painted with a southwestern motif, free coffee and water provided, the ability to order an alcoholic beverage if you like, and some cool tunes. The wait staff is very friendly and provide great service. Highly recommend!
Fitness Savage
Food is good but be prepared for lines on weekends.... learn to order ahead. Decent outside eating area, just wish they had shade on all tables.
Mickel Townsend
It has the best coffee and Bloody Mary's in town. We had the breakfast burrito with house made sausage Christmas style and they were excellent but a bit too spicy for our taste, we prefer very mild food.
Mandy Morgan
Amazing breakfast with a southwestern twist. Their cornmeal pancakes are so good. I have never been here and there NOT be a line to get in. Thankfully, they have this cool party bus in the back you can board to have a seat and some coffee (Irish, if you desire), Bloody Mary, etc.
v drinka
Go here when I am in St Louis. Food is usually good and today the coffee was exceptional!! I ordered biscuits and gravy and for my taste alittle on the spicy side but it is called "Southwest" for a reason. Be prepared to wait especially on weekends but think you'll be happy with your choice.
Jeremy Stout
Great food, great selection, friendly service
Connie Green
The Southwest Diner is one of the places that the locals eat at. There are lines, that's just how good It is. It is a family owned. The food is authentic Southwest flavors. The chilies come from Hatch, NM. I enjoyed every bite. I recommend The Southwest Diner to family and friends. So yummy!
Collin Stacey
I honestly was not expecting to enjoy this place as much as I did. The atmosphere, the food, and the people were all pretty awesome. My wife and I got the burrito and the country fried steak. They both were amazing. Highly recommend this place!
J P
Amazing! Without a doubt - a STL gem! Use the No Wait app to get in line, because there will be a line.
Lorna Espinosa
After living in St Louis for 4 years, why had I never been here before today?! The food is definitely worth the wait; I had the breakfast burrito and a side pancake and everything was so delicious. Whoever has the idea to put corn meal into pancakes is a genius. The burrito was a little spicy, but admittedly I'm a bit of a wimp in that regard. I will be coming back for more.
Meredith Gabbert
The food and the vibe at Southwest Diner are great! It's not your average diner, as the menu items have a little extra kick (spice), though you will find your diner favorites on the menu. The atmosphere is just fun, from cacti to colorful decor with a New Mexico flair. This is a popular place and only open until 2pm so plan accordingly, but definitely don't miss out on this one.
Aubrey Evans
You’ve got to love a Southwest themed diner on Southwest Avenue. This small little breakfast shop boasts a lot flavor. On Tuesdays they have tamales that are delicious. I would suggest getting them Christmas style a.k.a. with both green and red salsa and a side of sour cream. Their pancakes are unique and delicious. They sell super cozy hoodies that I spend all winter in. The coffee is great the people are great and I’ll never pass up a sopaipila.
John Thomas
I'm from Albuquerque NM, just moved to St Louis. Went here to see what the food was like and after seeing great reviews. Was not disappointed. The food was really good, my wife and I enjoyed it and definitely plan to be back. For ABQ natives, this place felt like a mix of the Frontier and Flying Star.
John Powers
1st stop off the plane and it didn't disappoint. Green chile Cheese burger, home fries, fried egg sandwich, breakfast burritos. They are doing an exceptional job with the contact less carryout. Order is on table outside, online ordering..detailed instructions. Highly recommend.
Adrian Barrera
Went there with my wife on a Tuesday morning and had immediate seating.. the waitress was friendly [: and the food was Amazing. The menu is unique and very tasty! Great experience.
Joshua Boston
Delicious food, good prices. Have tried to go on the weekend before, but the wait was far too long. Wednesday morning was still busy, but no wait. Great diner/breakfast food with southwestern flair. Service was fast... in and out in under an hour. Food quality was great. One of the best breakfast places in StL.
Seth Lindsey
Arrived around 0845 on a Sunday morning, and the place was PACKED! Got our name on the wait list, and was told it would be about 15 minutes. Since there was no room inside to wait, and it was a bit chilly outside, we headed to the bus to wait for our table. This bus hasn't likely moved under its own power in some time, but there is a heater and a bartender slinging Bloody Marys, mimosas, and beers... all in all not too bad.
Pretty much right at 15 minutes, we were summoned to our table. Inside is kinda loud, but the overall atmosphere is quite nice. Our server was pleasant, and quick with the refills, and the meals were brought out without much wait. The chorizo eggs and potatoes were good, with a nice, airy sopapilla to finish off the meal.
If you like the place, don't forget to swipe a couple bumper stickers on the way out!
Rue J Spence
Second visit to Southwest Diner. Outstanding service from Adam and delicious food. My husband had the Chile Burger with Cheesy Grits Tots and I had biscuits and gravy. Everything was perfect, but that burger was to die for!
David Berke
What a cute little, simple Diner. The staff was nice about everything. And the food was really really good I had this grits with pork and a red chili sauce and all I can tell you is it was absolutely delicious. my friend had the huevos rancheros with some meat and she said it was absolutely delicious. Totally recommend this place.
Rise Shield
Staff are young but fast and clean, I have eaten here and also delivers Postmates orders from here they are very popular and often packed to the brim.
There is little to no room in the actual restaurant itself so it's cramped but worth it for the food.
Parking is non existent there is no parking space inherently available to use (so be careful parking in the road)
Overall I recommend this place it's got a warm stigma and the foods good.
mrmanary
Wow! The southwest diner lived up to its name and my expectations. The hatch chiles on my breakfast were delicious and to my delight, too hot to finish in one sitting! The coffee is good, the people are friendly, and even better- they pay fair wages to the servers! This only adds to the warmth and fun, as the staff appear to truly enjoy their jobs :) highly recommend
aaron mandel
Get there when they open. The food is great
Duane Mabry
The service was exceptional. Everyone was really friendly. The place is clean and the food is really good. There is a wait but if you use the help app, you can get on the list before you even leave the house. We waited about 20 minutes on a Monday morning for a table for 6. This is a great local joint with good food. I recommend it if you like local diners.
Jesse Kieffer
My wife and I love coming to Southwest Diner. We get the same thing every time, Rocket to Bacon Land. The potatoes are the best in the industry and the quality is always there. I've never been disappointed with a meal here.
Rebecca Woolbright
I’ve never actually eaten here but I do pick-ups often ! Some of the nicest, most thoughtful, and caring group of people working here. Nice atmosphere, guaranteed you’ll have great service.
Update: I’ve personally ate here twice now and the employees are sweet and the food is fresh. Love it
Ryan Braun
Food is always great. Staff very attentive.
Geraine Willoughby
It had been quite a long time since we had visited & the food was just as delicious as always! The biscuits & gravy & home fries were amazing. I could eat it every day. A wonderful & fun local establishment!
Michelle Pawlowski
We waited an hour around 10am on a Sunday but enjoyed getting to know other customers in the waiting bus with complimentary coffee. The food isn't greasy, doesn't weigh you down and is delicious, especially for the price!
Garrett Essary
Food was fantastic, with an amazing take on southern and mexican cuisines. The gravy was homemade with peppers and other spices thrown in. You can tell the food is made with love and actual respect to the overall quality really makes this place one of a kind.
Travis S
The food and selection were pretty good. We did the breakfast side of the menu, everything came out good, nothing exceptional. The drink selection was great and the atmosphere was cool. Reasonably priced... However, the wait staff was awful. We stood by the door to be seated for at least 10 minutes while the staff just passed us and some other customers.
Hello Gregory
The Pickle Fries were amazing and the Grits on Fire also very good , but lacked the depth of flavor that I was expecting. Be prepared for a wait on a Saturday morning though waiting in the air conditioned beverage bus makes it easier on those STL summer days. Fun, upbeat atmosphere that was noisy with music, conversation and laughter. Wait staff friendly, kind and attentive enough. Can't wait to go back and give the menu a good thrashing, I definitely recommend. Only open till 2 pm so don't dilly dally your morning away.
Denise
Although it gets quite crowded on the weekends, if you are able to go during the week, I highly recommend it. On Tuesdays they have tamales available. Good coffee in quaint mugs, the best breakfast burrito in town and great service. Plus, it's in the old Southwest Bank that was the basis of The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery. Check it out!
Barbara Campbell
This was the first time my husband and I had ever gone, the service was excellent our server Eric was fast polite and I never had to request a refill! The corn meal pancakes were so dang good, I love pepper jack cheese and this is the hottest I've had, my taste buds were jumping for joy.Keep up the good work we will definitely be back!! #Ournewbreakfasthangout
Matt Bilyeu
I'd give you 5 stars if you'd expand your dining room so that I don't have to wait an hour for breakfast every time I come here. Still, the wait says something. One of the best breakfasts in Saint Louis, consistently good as is the service. Everyone I've ever brought here can't wait to come back.
Risa V
Southwest Diner is a solid choice for breakfast/brunch with many good choices on the menu. However, it has always been incredibly busy each time I've gone and the wait can be substantial. Additionally, some of the Mexican style breakfast entrees have been a bit lacking in flavor and heat, which was very disappointing from a style of food that is usually very vibrant.
Alex Owen
Their breakfast burrito is expletive amazing. Their French toast is perhaps better but I can’t say no to the breakfast burrito so I just say yes to both. Heart failure is a small price to pay for excellence
Melissa Keller
Tip: get on the yelp waitlist when you get close if there are multiple people in your group. We went on a Monday morning with 2 people and still had a 10-15 minute wait for a table. So worth a short wait, though!
The coffee was strong, and the server even gave us another full cup in a to-go cup when we left. Happy caffeine addict here!!!
My hubby loved his French Toast; there were few entrees he was willing to try, as he has an aversion to spicy foods. I ordered the grits on fire; the grits mixed with cheese was wonderfully creamy. Thr carne adovada and red chile had a great spicy, flavorful kick that worked well with the grits. I ordered the eggs on top fried hard, which turned out to be an excellent choice for another texture variation. The queso fresco on top is melty and cooling with the spicy sauce and meat. I would definitely order it again!
Morgan Lewis
Fantastic brunch experience. The wait is worth it. Make sure to try the "tots" but honestly I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. The portions are appropriately Midwestern in size and won't leave you disappointed.
Mrs. K. (Mrs. K)
My husband and I travel up to STL about once a month so heś always trying to find us great places to eat as the food scene here at the lake is pretty dismal.
That said, we found ourselves at the SW Diner, and what a cool little joint this is. Well worn, slightly shabby but very well run and eclectically decorated. Totally not a place you think you'd find in Missouri.
Our server was efficient, professional but very dry. Our food was beautiful to look at, spicy but strangely enough, lacking salt. Once I sprinkled salt on the beans and guacamole, all was well.
We were there about 930 am on a Saturday morning and the kitchen was humming! The servers were running back and forth, everyone seemed to help each other, totally a team vibe going on. The very best part of my breakfast were the homemade sopes, which are fried, pillows of dough that you use as a tortilla for your meal. AMAZING!
Come early or be prepared to wait, itś a busy joint!
Griffin Rohs
Wonderful breakfast spot with a great amount of heat on their spicy dishes. They don't hold back. Really friendly staff and the best music you'll find playing at a restaurant.
John Emke
The biscuits and gravy are the best! I've only been for breakfast but the 4 things I've had there are all excellent. The biscuits are made from scratch in house and the gravy has spicy chorizo sausage which kicks it up a notch. Also, they server Bits Iced Coffee in a bottle which is hard to find and super refreshing. This is becoming one of my favorite breakfast spots. I intend to visit for lunch/dinner at some point as the rest of the menu is appetizing as well. This is a must try if you are looking for a southwest spin on your normal dinner.
Marcela Gallegos
Very delicious food, I reccomend the huevos rancheros and add chorizo. Service is great too! We were a party of 6 and we waited around 15 min to be seated...almost 100% worth the wait...and I say "almost", because all the food we ordered was delicious and well portioned, but the pozole, the portion was very small for the price and it didn't look like a soup, the consistency was very thick. Other than that, very very good place to get breakfast. Also, is very close to the zoo.
Robert Elmore
This is an excellent small diner slightly off the beaten path but worth checking out. This is not an Americana diner but a Tex/Mex atmosphere and menu. Rocket to Bacon Land is one of my favs, with Grits on fire and a Southwest coffee (basically Irish coffee with Tequila).
Stephen Andrich
I've been here a few times and I always love the experience. The staff and owner that I met are all really nice. All of the food that I have tried was amazing. Great for vegetarians. Really cool room to be in. Often crowded. The music has always been great. Hardworking people. Definitely worth trying.
Max L.
Always satisfies. Everything I've had on the menu is great. I also love the decor, there's cool stuff to look at everywhere you turn. Great drinks. If you go here on the weekends you may have to wait for a table, but it's well worth it, during the week I've never had to.
Greg Crawford
Their breakfast food is amazing, and the service is quick. The grits appetizer bites were extremely good, i thought they looked burnt, but they were not, and they were amazing. They get rather crowded fairly early, but the wait is worth it.
Tommy Price
One of the best diners I've been to in quite a while. Always seem to have eclectic patrons. This seems like the kind of place visiting musicians would frequent on the rare occasion they're in St. Louis.
Stephanie W
Great pricing, great food. Super long line but worth the wait. If you get there when they open though you won't have to wait long. Their hot chocolate is ridiculously delicious, their home fries are also delicious. You basically can't go wrong here.
Rocio De Santiago
Such a delicious place for all meals. I went for breakfast and the chorizo was so good as was the sopapilla. Their queso is good and I'm excited to try other menu items
Grant Wynia
Good atmosphere and great food! The wait starts around 9am on weekend mornings so plan on getting there early or use the No Wait app. Always start off with the sopapillas. We were served by Max and he was on top of everything and very friendly. Would definitely recommend.
Johnathon Lyon
Absolutely THE BEST restaurant in the city. I've ordered half of their menu by now and have never, ever been dissatisfied. Those tots are just perfection, and the space itself is so chill and lived-in.
steenie
Got the carnitas in sauce and cold brew. The pork was a bit dry but the sauce was flavorful and the guacamole was fresh. The cold brew was very tasty. I’m looking forward to coming back and trying the rest of the menu. The milkshakes are calling my name!
Douglas Sears
The place is very eclectic and the food is excellent. My wife ordered the huevos rancheros and I ordered pancakes with their homemade sausage. In the huevos rancheros were some of the best beans I have ever eaten. And even we bought an extra order to carry out. My wife loved the huevos rancheros and my pancakes were excellent and the homemade sausage was top-notch. Definitely would eat there again. I rarely give 5 stars but this excellent place deserves it.
Andrew Karandjeff
This place plain and simple rocks! Awesome breakfasts. You will not leave hungry. Super popular, especially on the weekends, so be patient if you're not there early. Totally worth the wait.
Tyler Doyle
Breakfast burrito with sausage, subbed the spicy cheesy eggs on my waiter's recommendation. QUALITY stuff. My friends enjoyed their food too.
Bloody Mary's on the bus beforehand were a nice treat, too. Makes the wait manageable and gives the whole experience a unique vibe right off the bat.
Sean Roper
This place is cool, but the staff can be a bit slow sometimes. I've had days with both good and bad service, so the jury is still out on that. Other than that, they have some great options on their menu, and the sopapilla's are top notch. They are certainly popular, and it can be a long wait to get a table most days.
Alicia Kilian
Food is worth the wait, although they're also on nowait. My group split about 5 items and everything was great, especially the cheesy grit tots (if nothing else go for these bad boys) and the corn pancakes. Service was quick and friendly and we didn't feel rushed even at the crowded Sunday brunch.
Steven Inge
All the hipster beard wax keeps the floor shiny n slick. I'm certain the waitress did the electric slide bringing my bacon sammich to it's final destination. In all honesty, I've gone here between 30-40 times, it's close to work thankfully. The atmosphere, a bit of southwest, old school diner and 80's retro. The patrons are chatty and easy to strike up conversation with. The wait staff are artsy, polite and on point, I've never felt neglected or persistently bothered. It's not stuffy, you see all walks of life in there. The wait can be a bit long around lunch hours, for obvious reasons. The food, immaculate, I've only ordered breakfast but they have the whole gambit. I'd reccomend a side of bacon and the southwest coffee "alchol involved". As for the main course, whatever you choose won't dissapoint. Fair warning for those who can't handle spicy, navigate the menu cautiously and ask your waiter if need be. Eating at Southwest has always brightened my day.
Erica Conto
We found this place it is very close to our church. The food was amazing. Will be back to this place to eat. So good highly reccomend this reasturant.
Mike Breitenstein
Arrived at 8:15a on Saturday and they were already full. Sat in a bus behind the building. A little cold in there but there's free coffee and water along with a couple alcohol drinks for the brave. I tried and enjoyed a delicious bloody mary.
Once inside we were waited on right away. We ordered sopapillas as an appetizer topped with honey that just melted in my mouth. The rest of the breakfast was perfect. Highly recommended but Saturday mornings are busy for sure.
Bryson McIver
Staff was friendly and the food was awesome! I had one of their specials with chili, egg, gravy, potatoes, and chorizo and every piece of it was perfect. Girlfriend got the egg sandwhich and we had never seen one so nicely done!
Jim Bellizzi
Great selection, a breakfast burrito is always a good choice. They also have a great drink menu and the coffee is locally brewed. It def is a wait, especially on weekends, but on most Saturday and sundays they serve drinks in their bus while you wait, which is great.
Sopapillas for the win!
David White
The southwest style helps differentiate this place from many others (particularly for brunch). The food is consistently tasty and the service is good. It can get busy but tables free up relatively quickly - grabbing a stool at the counter is usually the quickest option.
Allen Moses
Went there waited over an hour but all worth it !!!! Had a wonderful but spicy bloody Mary in the bus right beside the building also a complementary coffee as well. I ordered and the Greek omlete it consisted of feta cheese ,black olives, raw spinach and a side of fried potatos which were crispy and lightly seasoned. And also home made biscuit which I also ordered a side of there sausage gravy and it was a tad spicy but spectacular! !! Especially on top of my omlete .
John Grapsas
Having lived in NM for 30 yrs and now living in FL ,I ate here on recent visit to St Louis to see my brother who lived in NM once as well. This is truly authentic tasting NM food.... Good red Chile is my yardstick and the southwest restaurant nailed it
Beth Beasley
Staff is SUPER friendly! Also our server, Adam had this variation on a drink on the menu that included cranberry juice and champagne....it was out of this world!! Will definitely be going back again when we visit!! Thanks Adam!!
Molly Mutschler
We ordered the fried egg sandwich and huevos rancheros supreme. The flavors were good and the service was friendly, if a bit slow (they were packed and busy). However, the sandwich bread was so soft I couldn't pick it up to eat it, and ended up using a knife and fork instead. Then the huevos rancheros was both too spicy and lacking in seasoning (not enough/any salt). We did love the sopapillas and the hot chocolate which was flavored with cinnamon, so we would try another dish another day.
Robert Gadon
Great menu, great food. Don't believe what you read in prior reviews about the service staff. This restaurant is popular, especially on weekends. There likely will be a wait to get seated, unless you arrive very early. I've been at the restaurant when they're busy, and the wait staff and the kitchen are rockin'. Be patient, and you will be rewarded. If you're not satisfied with the response of your server (who is likely swamped) get up and ask another another server (nicely) for what you want.
Priti Ravani
This is by far the best, most affordable diner in the area. We stopped here on our cross country drive and had a few dishes to split, it was so delicious, quick, and friendly. Please visit this gem if you're in the area!
Molly Meyer
Awesome food!!! The owner even mailed me a mug when I called the restaurant. They have a unique menu and atmosphere. Use No Wait to reserve as they get busy. Try out the mimosa bus on the side if you are waiting at brunch time!
Eric Schenkelberg
Probably our fav. brunch spot in this part of town. Usually crowded unless you get there early but they have a bus/bar out back now so that makes the wait easy.
Good bloody marys, too - make sure to ask for a slice of bacon in yours :-) Also, the pitcher is a better deal... or so I hear
Try the house-made tots. Yum!
Christopher Bailey
If you go to St. Louis and you do not try this place, you are messing up. I tried their biscuits and gravy and it was incredible. Easily the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had at a restaurant. It was packed, bit the service was fantastic and we got our food extremely quick.
David Sims
The food is always amazing!!!! We come here for the green chile because we miss it after having lived in New Mexico for several years!! The service is always great too!! Often a wait but worth it. The earlier we get there (every time we visit St Louis) the less wait.
Kermit Constantine
Delicious with service to match. If you have to wait for a table, they do get busy. Have a seat on their magic bus - it doubles as a fine patio -and enjoy a tasty cocktail.
TheDeathSection
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, friendly patrons, and fresh food with a southern twist!
I had the Carne Adovada, and an Irish Coffee. The Carne had just the right amount of spice for the average person, and the Irish coffee was stout but flavorful, both excellently crafted and presented.
Will return.
Bryan Rapp
Delicious food. Usually crowded and typically a 30 min wait, but there is an in-place trolley for waiting right outside that serves free coffee samples and will make drinks (bloody Mary's and non-alcoholic drinks) which makes the wait fly by. Plenty of street parking and wonderful service!
Melanie Siegel
Why do brunch anywhere else? There is always a wait and well worth it! Have a mimosa or bloody Mary on the bus while you wait. Options for everyone.... Seriously even the pickiest eater will fall in love! Go any day and you'll be happy you did!
Joe Giammanco
Great breakfast burrito. Perfect amount of spicy heat, cheese, eggs and potatoes. I added veggies instead of meat. Super happy with my choice. My friend had the Spicy Eggs which looked and tasted amazing.
Melanie Shedd
Super yummy and very reasonable. Best Navajo Fry Bread I have had outside the southwest. Everything was super flavorful. Love the veggie options in place of the meat. Tasty!
Raven Rogers
This was my first visit, but definitely won't be my last! The bacon was sent down from heaven and personally delivered by angels, the music touched my soul, and this was the first time I've had chorizo that didn't have to be patted down with a paper towel before eating! Loved the laid back vibe as well 😍 …
Carlos Arnavat
Food lately feels like it's made day before, certain dishes. It's been better. Glasses are dirty.
People are friendly.
Just not sure it's worth spending 35 bucks for 2 people at breakfast.
Christian Ethridge
Exceeds all expectations of the word "diner". The employees are all professional, the servers keep your glass full, the cooks whip your food out perfect every time. Easily one of the best restaurants in St. Louis.
Amelia Adams
Never disappointed here. Make sure you note the hours, Ive arrived with a big desire for French Toast done Strawberry Alarm Clock style only to face closing in 10 minutes. More like classic diner hours
Octavia Weaver
This place saved our trip to STL. We've had a horrible food experience until we got here. Everyone loved the food even the 2 year old! The food was so flavorful and filling, I couldn't help but to succumb to the food coma after eating here. The 2 hour wait sucked, but I'd wait again! Get here early if you can to avoid that wait! The service was on point too! Any time I come to STL, I will be here.
Nathan Langtry
I got the breakfast burrito with homemade sausage, and the green chile and cheese on top. It was amazing! The heat made me sweat, but not burn my mouth. I'd order it again for sure.
Jeff Battocletti
We have been coming here for years and it is always a treat. Much more now that its a 30 minute drive ha. The wait can be a bit ridiculous on weekends but as long as you get there early or don't mind hanging out in a renovated bus and drinking a bloody mary or 2 it's a great place and a hidden gem in St Louis.
Eric Lightner
The food was great though I did accidentally order an alcoholic coffee so that might have had something to do with my enjoyment. Its a little hard to see from the road but if you hit a big warehouse looking building just drive towards the more residential area and it will be on of the first buildings you see. And I suspect parking can get tough on some days.
Heather B.
The food was great, the staff were amazingly pleasant. It's like coming home and having brunch with your extended family. The only thing to look out for is busy street parking and residents who might get angry if you park in the residential neighborhood.
Nick-o-las
This place is usually busy so be prepared to wait in their waiting buses outside. Great southwest style breakfast meals. The cornmeal pancakes are an interesting departure from the norm. Kitchy style and small town charm are mixed with a rock and roll sound track.
B C
I come here every few weeks and I'm always happy with service and food. The heuvos rancheros are my favorite (decked out with bacon and guacamole as well) but there are many solid choices. They serve Kaldis coffee as well, which is much better than typical diner coffee.
While the food and coffee is certainly better than your average diner, the atmosphere can be similar, but not in a bad way. Tables are packed pretty close, so don't expect to be having a super private conversation. Just go and enjoy it, enjoy the great tex-mex, and enjoy the buzz of this popular St. Louis spot.
Bill Hogan
Not much to say. Had the breakfast burrito with bacon and green chile. It was excellent. One of the best I've ever had. We will be back!
Mike
Breakfast food was great and so were the drinks! Check in before you come to get a table quicker. Expect 30 minutes plus if you show up then put your name in. You can always wait on the bus and get a drink though.
Lanny Schnipper
There's Mexican food and then there's New Mexican. Southwest Diner does the best New Mexican in St. Louis. Anyone from New Mexico should feel right at home eating a green chile (not chili!) cheeseburger at Southwest. Expect a long wait for weekend breakfasts.
Danielle Jones
So good! Would absolutely go again!!
Nikki Lynn Konert
Seriously the BEST queso in St. Louis!!!!
Aaron Snow
One of the best breakfast joints I've ever had. If you have the time you must stop and eat here. And if you have the room in your stomach get the pancakes. Excellent food and service
Andy Ludwig
Best breakfast in town. Best potatoes in the world.
Matt Wright
The Southwest Slinger is one of the best things I've ever had. So much flavor, especially with the gravy added with the red chile sauce. I seriously doubt I'll be able to ever order anything else. The Crispin Sunrise drink is also phenomenal to the point I make them at home all the time now. Check in ahead of time if you don't want to wait a long time because the word is out on how great this place is.
Kyle
A great local spot. The decorations were all authentic to their New Mexico theme. The food was awesome and really tasted amazing. The menu had a bunch of New Mexico staples!
Elizabeth Raedeke White
Loved the biscuits & gravy!! The hamburger patties on the slinger were a bit over salted and over cooked, but otherwise good. I loved eating at the picnic table outside.
Alyssa Blackford
By far my favorite breakfast place in Saint Louis. The staff is absolutely amazing. Go to's are the breakfast burrito christmas style or the fiery scramble, but seriously, everything is delicious.
Jena Doering
The dinner has the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had. The pancakes are super delicious. They get really busy but the food is more than worth the wait.
Joel Hall
Only shortfall is it closes early in the afternoon. Great breakfast and lunch spot with a real Southwest flair. Very popular among locals, waits can be long but you can get coffee while you wait on the bus parked outside.
Stephen Suydam
The feel of this place is great. The waiters have personality, there is a great atmosphere, and fantastic southwest decor. The drink bus is a brilliant move. You can get bloody mary's and mimosas before you are even seated...in fact that is where I would have stopped. The food is decent, but not amazing. I had a huevos rancheros with chorizo. The chorizo was obviously microwaved and there were cold spots. The corn tortillas were greasy and not crisp. I would recommend a side of cornmeal pancakes, though. It is a brunchy corn bread and delicious. This is a laid back scene to meet at for a morning drink and have a couple of bites. I would recommend trying this place with a must on the bloody mary and pancakes.
Devin Kiser
Awesome spot for breakfast, lunch or anywhere in between. Pretty small space and I hear it can be hard to get a table on the weekends. Still worth a trip anytime, probably best to try a workweek lunch.
Jon Carroll
Excellent local diner. Usually busy, but the wait never seems to long. Some spicy choices and some of the usual breakfast fare. Love the pancakes!
G P
Decent food, albiet slightly oily if you get the meatier dishes, but certainly worth a try if you enjoy a southern take on classic breakfast dishes. Get there early if you want to sit down in a reasonable amount of time.
Michael P
First of all, the food is great and the coffee is very good especially for a diner. The service, though, is why I am writing this. Our 4 1/2 year old managed to slide down through the back of her chair and got stuck. Pannicing 4 year olds are disruptive, no? Another server came over quickly and helped her calm down and was able to coach her through getting herself out without hurting herself. Big thank you.
We will be going back. Oh, and the bacon!
Tyler Mohesky
I don't even know where to begin with Southwest Diner. The name refers to both it's location on Southwest, and the flavors in their breakfast and lunch dishes. The seats have been nearly full every time we've been, so the earlier you get there the better, and there is no parking lot--just street parking around the area. This place will be enjoyed most by people who enjoy some heat in their food. The staff is super friendly and most of the time the food comes out quickly. Try the biscuits and gravy, the sopapillas with honey, and the southwest slinger (not a true St. Louis slinger with chili, but with
red or green chile sauce). This place is truly some of the best breakfast I've ever had!
Amanda
Diner was loud so we opted to sit outside. There is very limited seating outdoors though. Food was pretty good. Everything has a "southwest" flavor. Service was decent.
Brian Hutter
Wonderful diner in the city. Gives you the exact kind of service and good tasting food that comes with the portions you'd expect for a big family meal. Recommended to anyone for anything from Sunday brunch after church or a breakfast for your special someone
Mara Nelson
This is one of my favorite places in St. Louis! The food is delicious, the staff are great, and the environment is welcoming. I love the green chile items, but if it is your first time, I would recommend getting the green chile sauce on the side. They have rotating specials that rarely disappoint. Best items are the burrito made enchilada style, Rocket to Bacon Land, and the queso fundido. If you go on the weekend, though, prepare to wait up to an hour inside their fun waiting bus that doubles as a bar!
Ainsley McGrath
The sopapillas are remarkably light and flavorful. The same goes for their unique cornmeal pancakes. Creative breakfast/brunch at this price point is really exciting. That goes double with such a wide variety of tasty vegetarian options and substitutes.
Scott Olson
As always, delicious food! Worth the long wait time.
George Murrey
We moved from New Mexico, and this is by far the best cuisine ever for St Louis. They buy green and red chile from Hatch, NM, which makes the food that much better. The service was good, the atmosphere and the style was just like any restaurant in NM. I give it five out of five stars. We'll be back for sure!
Neil Schonert
Great brunch spot not far from downtown Maplewood and right off 44. They offer all the typical brunch fare but make it "southwest" style with chilis and green and/or red sauce. If you like brunch, you'll love Southwest Diner. If you're wary of spicy food there are plenty of non spicy offerings so don't worry.
The inside is filled with eclectic mix of kitsch from the southwest US. It's pretty fun but can get crowded fast. If you're a weekend bruncher be prepared to wait outside 20-45 minutes for a table. While it's always fairly busy general wait times outside of weekend brunch are much less than that, like in the 5-10 minute range.
Bruce Rademacher
This has got to be the best New Mexican restaurant this side of Albuquerque. Its like eating back home again. We drive 86 miles one way evey month to get our fix. Its absolutely delicious and worth the drive. 😋 …
Rodney Harris
Awesome food! Grits on fire!
Karen Adams
Always a winner! Great food. Both breakfast and lunch foods are fabulous. Eclectic and interesting decor. Service is speedy and friendly. The coffee is always good. Great choice for singles, couples, and families. Kid-friendly.

The absolute BOMB! You will not be disappointed.
Sirius Hertz
I've lived in Las Cruces NM for 15 years. This is the closest to food from home I've found in the midwest. Seeing flat enchiladas (a very specific southern New Mexico style) on the menu was encouraging, and the food doesn't disappoint - fresh green chile, tortillas, and chorizo. If you're from the area and looking for a taste of home, or not and looking to try something new, this is a great place to eat.
Priscilla Pano
We loved everything, and I mean everything about this place! from the food, staff coat hangers and purse/bag hangers it was SUPER AMAZING. I wished we had a place like this in the San Francisco, CA Bay Area! I will see you again when we come back to St. Louis!
Philip Taylor
Only stopped in by chance, had all day Breakfast at lunchtime, and could also order off the Dinner menu. Family of four, four different meals from the all day menus. Great food and Service. Highly recommend!
Laura Rey
Delicious breakfast with the flavors of New Mexico
John McCandliss
I lured several family members, some from Albuquerque, there for lunch. They were blown away by the food, and it has become their favorite restaurant. The menu options cover breakfast and lunch (they close at 2). They seem to go for quality vs. offering a ton of options. One member of our party really appreciated their offer to adjust the the level of spiciness to individual taste. Some of the members of our party intentionally took home food to be tried by other family members in St. Charles. It is now a "go to" spot when they are in this area.
Samuel Stoeckl
I often crave their biscuits and gravy and john's fiery scramble eggs. Nice outdoor seating and covid safe.
Jonnathan J Rodriguez
First thing I’ll saying about it there is a waiting, there is always a waiting so get in the waitlist beforehand. And even if you do that you’ll probably ended up waiting more once you are there. They do try to make the waiting kinda fun with the bus around the corner where you can sit down, get some drinks and listen to some music (it’s an original idea)
I got the rocket to baconland which did not has as much bacon as you might except with that name but it was a solid option. The sopapillas were tasty. I think I might go back to try something else at some point but I’m not dying to go back.
The service was pretty good, and they gave us some tickets for the comedy show at the funny bone.
David Adams
Ok food little pricey but overall not bad.
Zack Hopfer
Breakfast burrito but ask with the spicy eggs, best breakfast food hands down
John Bolduan
Smashing onto the scene with in your face tasty diner goodness and a school bus with free coffee while you wait for the train to flavor town, the Southwest Diner features straight authentic New Mexican decor and a menu that will blow your sopapillas off. Check out their cornmeal pancakes, tomales, and real cream and make syrup. The coffee is on point and the staff is cooler than cool.
Mark Nordmeyer
Good but not great. Ordered the Huevos Rancheros with everything. Tasty but did not feel good for several hours afterwards. Will visit again but with caution and try something else.
Jake Beadleston
Great food. Good atmosphere. Staff was a little stressed and it showed in their service but overall a really neat place to grab breakfast!
Judah Baker
Best breakfast food outside of CO. this place kills it. The service is top notch, that's rare these days.
Please don't come though it's already too crowded. Cheers!
Shannon Scott
So good! I got their breakfast enchiladas with gravy and had to stop myself from eating the whole thing one sitting. The cornbread pancakes are also 👍🏻👍🏻 …
Wendy Meese
My husband loves this place. The food is unique and prepared very well. However the seasonings and taste are just not to my liking. I will stick with more traditional fare.
K. elsey
Not a terrible wait (Saturday 11am) AND everyone who was also waiting were really chill and outgoing as if the people who choose to go to Southwest are fun people as well. For me, the sausage was too spicy but I'm sure most would love, GREAT GUACAMOLE. I will go there again.
P O
45 min wait for the bar.
Had a burrito with rice and beans today.
There was so much black pepper on everything I could only eat a few bites.
I have had Sopapillas with veggie chorizo previously which was good.
Seth Lovell
Amazing. Get any eggs "Johnny" style! Great service. Really, really flavorful food. Easily just became my favorite breakfast spot!!
Tim Lumpkins
The cornmeal pancakes are super tasty. The wait is pretty long on Sundays, so I recommend reserving a spot on the Yelp app before heading there.
Scott VandenElzen
Good southwestern breakfast / lunch but crazy busy. Staff is super friendly.
Kirk Augustine
It was pretty good. Not better than City Diner in my humble opinion, but not bad. Server was very friendly. Brevity on the ticket meant my sons grilled cheese (GC) got us an order of green chilli fries instead (GCF) but they offered to take it off the bill, so its all good.
BKP
Are you a fan of slingers? Want a nice spicy kick to wake you up in the morning?
Southwest Slinger
Eggs over easy
House made Biscuit
& if you like your slinger traditional with chilli get the $2 side of carne avadova
We have been going there about twice a month and it is amazing.

I love Southwest Diner. The food is great and not very expensive. Upsides: not busy during the week, friendly staff. Downsides: coffee is usually burnt (both cold brew and drip).
Christina Nelson
The service was great, wonderful atmosphere, and delicious food. The rocket was amazing and the bloody Mary with bacon in it was one of the best bloody Mary's I've drank! My husband and I will be going back!
Lauren Donoghue
Delicious house made soppapilla with honey drizzle! Our meals were exellent!
Kelly Drury
Did not know what a sopapilla was, but got that plate here today. Very good ! Sort of a puffed bread(pita?) With all the Mexican fixins- beans, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, onion, and green and red salsas with choice of proteins
Kegan Kegley
Great neighborhood diner, if I lived in St Louis I'd eat here every week.
Mary EM
Southwest inspired food. Coming from New Mexico this is the closest I've gotten here in Missouri. The food is hot, fresh and delicious. Not to fond of the red chile, but love anything green chile (just personal preference). Had the green chile (not to be confused with green peppers or jalapeños) cheeseburger and it was delicious. At another visit had huevos rancheros which were ok. The staff is always friendly, accurate and prompt. Highly recommend. Just wish they had tacos.
Sarah Stainbrook
Finally, authentic New Mexican food! This place has the vibe and taste of Frontier in Albuquerque. The carne adovada was delicious, though not as hot as some might expect. The sopapillas and handmade tortillas were right on. The waitress told me that they ship their green chiles on ice from Hatch. This is just the place for a homesick New Mexican, and I'll be returning frequently!
Mark Gould
My girlfriend I come here monthly for the “Jonathan’s famous fiery scramble”. I refuse to get anything else because it’s so incredible. The staff is really friendly and they know how to properly brew their coffee.
tom nelson
Soooo glad the dining room is open again. I really missed this place. Always a great experience!!
Kay Lynne Firsching
Great Tex Mex inspired menu. Try your eggs Jon style with a side of avocado. Great gluten free breakfasts, grits! And Bitts cold brew coffee, yum!
Christine Villalobos
We drove over 30 minutes, to try something different, and we were not disappointed! The vibe is fun, excellent service, and the food was phenomenal! We can't wait to go back!
Alena Strnadova
I'm from New Mexico. And I approve this restaurant.
Kevin Garner
Small place but delicious. You need to setup a reservation because they always seem to be busy. The service was great as well as the food. They will fill you up.
Kmart
A great value for something totally different than the norm. I am glad I finally made the decision to check out this diner. I can't wait to go back for breakfast but my lunch today was on point.
Adam
Great breakfast food (and/or hangover food), but expect to wait (30-45mins for my last two visits), and seating is cramped and usually uncomfortable. Wait staff is very friendly, good atmosphere, but for me personally, not worth the hassle.
Shelby Jack Filla
We both had the country fried steaks and it’s one of the best ones I’ve had. Awesome gravy!! Fast and great service!
Tom Peters
Food is good but the service is poor. Food was put on table and the server never checked back if everything was ok, never refilled the coffee and we had to wave our arms in the air to finally pay our bill. Funny think is the waitress noticed we needed coffee when she brought the food but never returned??!!? The place was not even busy, it was just bad service. Again the food was good.
Lia Williams
This is a fantastic place. Great atmosphere, affordable prices. But the food is just phenomenal I still have dreams about their avocado salad topped with an egg and southwest dressing.
David Waters
Consistency is everything, and they continue to deliver. I feel like family walking into the door and it's like they have chefs from heaven. I've never had a bad experience here and don't believe it's even possible. Thank you all so much.
Dave Scarmana
The food here is amazing and very creative. Perfect take on a Tex/Mex diner. Plenty of traditional options as well. Sometimes there's a wait, but the waiting area is fun and serves beverages while you wait.
Colleen Piel
Loved it and can't wait to go back again! The sopapillas, breakfast burrito, and salsas were delicious. The decor and atmosphere is fun.
Nick M
We love coming here for breakfast! Make sure to get a reservation though, its always busy but well worth it. And you can grab drinks in the bus outside.
Matt Hoskins
Great breakfast and lunch foods. Unbelievable quality and flavor in the green Chile given the location in the middle of the country. Well done, We'll be back often.
Renee Bogacz
Trust me: you definitely want the fiery scramble with bacon and the sopapilla! I don't live near here, but every time I come to visit, I always get this!!
Daniel Tice
I love the sopapias here. There are the best in STL. I also usually get the home fries and bacon which are excellent. Staff is friendly and the ambiance is amazing for a Southwest theme
sami ross
The service here is always fantastic. There is typically a wait, but it's well worth it! I recommend the green chile cheese burger or any of their omelette combinations.
Brinkley Smith
THE BEST BREAKFAST IN THE CITY. Literally everything is good and minus a wait on the weekends it has no faults. Come for authentic spiced cuisine with a laid back feel.
Krys B
We went here super hung over and man- let me tell ya- great food for a hang over. Really really solid. The only issue that I have is that sometimes the servers aren't friendly (don't get me wrong, sometimes they really are- it's just hit or miss it seems) and it's a bit overpriced for some items but otherwise it's a great spot with great food. Thank you!
lisa kriz
This is a wonderful place for breakfast
Wonderful employees. Fast service, you all deserve a RAISE. I will keep coming back as well as my kids. Great job and keep it up !!!!💙💙💙💙 …
Joe Fun
No indoor dining. Must order at window. Large patio with picnic tables. Not much shade. Food was excellent.
Chris Wiley
We stopped in for breakfast while visiting St Louis. We got here early to avoid waiting... Fabulous food and friendly staff! Highly recommended if you have the chance to stop in!
Ally Milner
Here's the deal. Southwest Diner is the best casual local eats spot in STL. Their motto, "A taste of the Southwest on Southwest," gives you a pretty good idea of what's in store, but if you want more specifics: a medium-sized menu of breakfast/lunch/dineer food with a spicy, Southwestern spin--chilis and the best ghost pepper cheese I've had. Food with a kick of spice, reasonably priced. Food that fills you up. Damn goos bloody marys and beermosas. Helpful, genuine staff and a down-to-earth owners. Complimentary coffee while you wait (get there early). 11/10.
Laura Swofford
We are obsessed with the Grits on Fire and Torta Milanesa, but everything is seriously good! Staff is super nice and I also appreciate how nice they are with my toddler who loves this place too!
Allison Boeck
Hands down, the best breakfast in Saint Louis! The breakfast burrito, huevos rancheros, and pancakes are all AMAZING! 10/10 recommend dining at southwest diner!
Brian Coalson
Best diner in St Louis. Everything I have gotten there has been excellent. Shout out to the Southwest slinger and their bacon is super thick and delicious.
Molly Reinhardt
There's always a wait, but it's always worth the wait! Great food, and always great service. Friendly staff! They have a school bus with drinks and heat while you wait for your table too.
Shane Stair
Food was very good, place was busy with about 18 minute wait time. When seated service was excellent! glasses never got more then half empty, and food was prompt.
Adam Eberhart
I'm embarrassed that I had never been here after moving from New Mexico to St. Louis two years ago. I've only had the enchiladas (today, and they were fantastic) but I will be trying everything on this menu before I am back in NM. Thank you for this piece of home.
Jean Anne Miller
Wonderful menu. Busy place. A bit difficult to find, few parking spots. Great staff. Tasty biscuits and gravy.
Louis Groff
Best b&gs in town. The fiery scramble is my go-to. Abby behind the bar was an absolute boss. If you don't know what to get, just ask her, and she will guide you through.
Gabe Suggs
Great food! Amazing Breakfast Burritos and Berry Awsome Pancakes! Best place for breakfast in St.Louis handsdown =) Gotta try it if you havnt you're missing out
Carla Beluk
Fun place to visit for a great meal. Can't go wrong with anything you order here!
Karl
As a New Mexican by birth and 20 years of life, I was hesitant to see if this place would live up to the hype I was hearing. I have to say...Aside from the green chile shipped to me by family, this was the closest taste of home I've had in awhile. The sopapillas were a bit small for the price but aside from that, I approve!
Charles Schwartz
Nice place. Good original food. One hour wait for Sunday brunch will make it hard to motivate myself to return.
Ryan Jones
Always great food & laid-back atmosphere. Will keep coming back & recommend to my friends. Try the Chicken Fried Steak for sure!
Jeffrey Graves
Very good! Huevos Rancheros w green chili very flavorful. Cornmeal pancakes also very good. Great coffe. I'll be back to try more.
Molly
Stopped here for curbside while we were in the area—absolutely DELICIOUS! Thankful for the vast plant-based options too. I’ll definitely be back!
Adam Archibald
Really solid food. It's actually Southwest food which is different than Mexican. They really nail it. I did the red chilli sauce. But the green is good too.
Mary Ferlisi
Great food, friendly people but to loud for old folks to hold a conversation.
Timothy Stout
Great food, quick service, genuine people. South city lifestyle.
Tim McCandless
Everything I've tried here has been very good. Best green chile I've had outside of New Mexico. Their black bean green chile cheeseburger is excellent, as is the New Mexican Breakfast Burrito and Huevos Rancheros.
Robin Helem
A must do it a again! First time there everything was awesome❣️ This place demands a repeat return... Only thing missing I should have brought some friends with me. Yet I was not lonely for company everyone was very friendly and welcoming🙋🏽♀️❣️ Go and tell me your favorite dish 😉 …
J.T. Mills
Great staff that will answer all of your questions. Haven't had a less then perfect meal yet. Even if you're vegetarian the options are worth a try.
Vanessa Demoss
The outdoor seating was very wonderful. The food was amazing! The breakfast foods are great
Edward Knop
Most of the food has some spicy hotness but you can find items that aren't hot. Very good food here, I haven't had anything I didn't like.
FP Engbert
Pretty good food. I've been there a few times and service is usually a bit relaxed, so don't go here looking for a fast meal.
El Phillips
Southwest has never failed to be amazing both in service and food quality. The wait is well worth it. One of my go to places.
Thiran Udawatta
Good portion sizes. Several veggie options. Can be long wait times during peak brunch hours, but typically worth the wait.
Nancy Swanson
Great food with a southwest twist. Friendly fun servers. I've only had breakfast, but lunch menu looks delicious!
Mason S
Good stuff. I think the pancakes and biscuits are like whole grain or something. I would check them out before you order them. French toast was amazing
David Trudo
Maybe the only place in town to get New Mexico red and green chile!
