Reviews of L'Oursin
Esmeralda Botello
A very pleasant dining experience. Servers were attentive and very kind. The food was excellent and hearty portions for the price. I would love to come back when the seasonal menu changes. They had a very impressive wine menu and had it not been “dry January” I would have ordered a glass/bottle. The crème brûlée was by far my favorite thing and I will be coming back to get it again. I also appreciated that they added 20% service charge to the bill so no tipping is required. I love and support any restaurant that provides its staff with a guaranteed living wage. It’s definitely worth a try.

one of the best and most surprising meals i have had all year. i am a long time fan of L'Oursin but have never written a review. this most recent meal made a review necessary. i was really taken aback by the really creative textures and juxtaposing flavors in every dish my friend and i shared. the scallop appetizer may be the best bites i had all year. Followed up with wonderful rabe centric salad and a sublime chicken and morel main dish. just a wonderful evening and the crew there know how to pair wine and make one feel at home. thanks for the wonderful experience!

Truly fabulous experience! We sat at the bar, near the kitchen and loved watching the kitchen work, chatted with the bartenders and loved the food! The chicken with morels (order with frites) was incredible. The Italian salad pairs great with it and we'd highly recommend the thon de ligne (tuna on cabbage, etc) to start. Every one of the staff was awesome, truly trying to make our entire experience fantastic!

It was an absolute treat to experience their foudne on the patio! The service was amazing, the spread was well thought out. I honestly can't get over that pot of melted cheese couple with the spiced wine. We took home dessert and pasta from the market for the next day. The sauce was more than expected. I look forward to going back when the full menu is available!

Inside of L'Oursin, is a place called Old Scratch. It has delicious food, between chicken, tofu, brisket and burgers - it's totally worth trying them out. Although the prices are a bit high for the portion sizes, it's packed with great tastes. They also allow cocktails for delivery, with a few being pretty good. A little pricey once again, with small portion sizes, but you gotta try it since it's a great way right now to get things delivered. Double Smash Burger is amazing, and their chicken is done right.

Could you be at L'Oursin instead of reading this review? If so, stop reading now and get over there. Sidle up to the bar. Ask Zach about the kalimotxo. Throw a dart at their drinks menu and get a guaranteed bullseye. Get the beef croquettes and marvel at that perfect meat package. Order that half chicken and smother your feelings in a gravy that will give you new feelings, all the best feelings. Then get another order of the croquettes and pour them into your pockets so you can occasionally pop one in your mouth on the way home, power pellets for a Pac-Man amiably ambling through the cool, crisp night.

Classic French bistro style eatery with the comfortable feel and eats taking on a PNW edge to it. This Seattle classic has been serving great food for years now and finally got around to give it a try. We surveyed the tasting menu, which was good. In retrospect, this was good, but the overall experience may have been better if we tried the a la carte menu. Favorites were the home made tagliatelle with geoduck that was cooked so delicately it was reminiscent of pork belly and paired with capers brown butter and crunchy breadcrumbs to add texture. The combination cod and braised oxtail was so interesting and promising, but fell flat with over cooked cod. The classics charcuterie plate was so good, I could come back for wine and meats any day. Overall a definite must try in Seattle. Will be back for a la carte food and drinks with bar food.

L'Oursin offers an elevate dining experience in a rather simple and down-to-the-earth space. There is nothing particularly striking about the menu, but all the dishes I tried turned out remarkably good. The attention to details that you can find a Michelin-starred restaurant paired with a creative approach to the menu surpassed my expectations, big time. A note on the black sea bass – it was, possibly, the best white fish I tried so far, grilled to perfection, with plenty of juices captured and a tender charred skin. A definite must-go place in Seattle.

The front of the house was outstanding. The decor manages to emulate the dingy, smoke covered walls of Paris without the smoke smell. The food was well done, but didn't raise the bar compared to Lūk which isn't too much further away.
Christopher Walker
The burger special at the bar is fantastic. Don't skimp, treat yourself to the duck fat fries, too. Quick, delightfully friendly service, delicious food, and excellent cocktails, as well as a well-curated list of wines by the glass.
Jenn Chin
Came here for dinner on a Saturday night, had a great time. They have a huge wine list (including an orange wine - didn't order it though) and a number of cocktails as well.
Coming into it I was a little apprehensive about the small menu. While there are several apps, small, and medium dishes, there were only 4 entrees on the menu (1 veggie, 2 fish, 1 chicken). I'm more of a protein person, but I ended up ordering the arctic char and was blown away by it! It was described as being similar to salmon (not my preferred fish), but the preparation of this was really what set it apart. The fish is cooked sous vide to a nice medium rare throughout - it was reminiscent of a smoked salmon. The morels and sauce was really nice and added a richness to the super tender fish.

We had a magical New Year's Eve meal last night. We were blown away by the quality, creativeness, and beauty of the six-course prix-fixe and wine pairing. We are pescatarian, and the chefs went out of their way to present us with a seafood-only menu. The pace was perfect; we enjoyed a leisurely 3-hour dinner. The staff was incredibly welcoming and knowledgable, but we were given time to enjoy our meal. Of note, I'm a lover of natural wine, and enjoyed all of the selections. What a great way to ring in the new year! We can't wait to return and try the à la carte menu.
Darnell Kebo
My partner and I visited on a Sunday for the prix fixe menu and left very satisfied. I couldn't get enough of the in house bread and butter and insisted I finish all the butter. Pork terrine had a nice flavor and texture. Radiccio salad was very fresh, slightly bitter and balanced well with the dressing. I found the cassoulet so very flavorful and delicious. Very hearty and warm. The soup de poisson was full of yummy fish, scallops, mussels, and squid which sat in a nice, mild saffron seafood broth. Dessert was a beautiful cow cheese that was a delicate mix of earth and richness and was so creamy. The apple brandy sorbet was surprisingly enjoyable with it's cool mix of sweet and tart.
Service was prompt and friendly. Be sure to read the wine list even if you don't drink wine.
joseph spears
Fantastic decor and service, the drinks and champagne flights were well done and the food was very good. Definitely recommend

I had a delicious meal here the other night. My friend and I sat at the bar and Tommy the bartender took excellent care of us. From the unique and carefully executed cocktails, to the perfect glass of wine to accompany our entrees and our dessert, I was very glad to have been seated at the bar.
And the food was delicious! The liver moose appetizer was super tasty and the sturgeon I had for my entree was cooked perfectly.
Well done! I will definitely be returning :-)
Patrick Conlan
Inventive cocktails, great selection of small plates. Halibut croquette, radishes and an awesome tuna and olive plate all went down very easily. Good team - very attentive, kept an eye on each other's tables as well.
Hope Yeats
Every item we ordered was better than the one before it! Imaginative cocktails, amazing food, delicious wine, best creme brûlee of my life, easily comparable to some of the best food I've had in Paris!
Nisha Joglekar
We were two of us who ate dinner here on a weekend night. Things I liked: the ambiance, the main course dishes - the grilled rockfish with dungeness crab and the poached salmon with morels, bacon.. the portions were just right and the food well seasoned. The mousse au chocolate was also very good, albeit not with dark chocolate. It had a light crunchy, slightly salty garnish that went well with the sweetness of the mousse.
The cider from Normandy was also very refreshing.
We also liked the attention to detail, whether in the service or the dinnerware.
Things I liked less: We ordered the foie gras terrine which was served with strawberry compote and brioche. While I liked the foie gras & the strawberry compote looked pretty with tiny flowers sprinkled on it, both the compote and the brioche were a bit too sweet with the foie gras. Perhaps, the more conventional fig spread and baguette would have gone better with the foie gras. As the brioche was insufficient with the foie gras, we ordered some bread with seaweed butter; the butter did not have any different taste.
All in all, a good place for a special occasion or a date night.
Carl Siegrist
Can't really say enough good things about this wonderful restaurant. Comfortable, casual setting with great service and excellent food and wine. We shared bread, lettuce salad, black cod, bottle of wine and two desserts. Perfect! Very much looking forward to next visit. This place is a keeper!
R G
Excellent food and unique cocktails. Loved the all natural wine from France. It is pricey, but great for a special night out.
Phill Gilbert
A casual experience that focuses on great quality food, combined with an excellent wine menu, topped with servers who really know their stuff. Get dressed up (like we did) or don't, it doesn't matter - you'll enjoy the food and experience either way!
Don't forget to ask your server for advice, they're very knowledgeable and can point you in the right direction fire menu choices or wine selection.
Definitely recommended, my wife and I will be going back soon
Roger Knopf
A lot to love here. An outstanding bistro menu. A great cocktail program. An absolutely outstanding wine list with few big names, lots of French regions not found on 98% of wine lists, and they are all reasonably priced.
Joon Park
Great atmosphere, friendly service, and amazing food and drinks. Highly recommend. :)
Tiphoni Iacolucci
Loved it! Everything was absolutely divine. They really had a deft hand with pairing flavors, my favorite was the albacore tuna with compressed watermelon and basil. I never would of imagined that basil would go so well with tuna but it was to die for. Also attention to details were perfect, every salad or green we had was perfectly dressed and well salted making things seriously tasty. One of the best meals I've had in a long time.
Mariah A
Friendly service and amazing food! We got oysters, duck confit, and steak frites. The drink menu descriptions were witty and helped me choose a nice wine.
Noelle Royer Lindenmann
Delicious food and lovely wine, safe atmosphere. The smallest fondue restaurant is also the very best.
Lucas Duffey
Great selection of wine and cocktails. I really liked how the labeled the wines adventurous/traditional, so we could try some new wines.
The food itself were a disappointment.
We got the pork belly and scallops. The pork belly was dry, but the scallops were well seared, creamy and delicious. The braised lamb shoulder was super fatty. The sides for both lacked flavor.
The corn and cauliflower soup was creamy and would have been better with a dash of acid or some granular textural component.
Overall this is a good place for drinks.
michael parks
Great food, beautiful interior, great service 👍
I really enjoyed the unique seafood options
Laura Gilbert
Small, quaint and charming. Menu isn't extensive but it's perfect French fare and the prices are great. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly, reminds me of a bistro in the suburbs of Paris. Very much recommend.
Vee Rodriguez
Cool place .. great bartender .. the rating is mainly on the food ... NOT the service .. even though I do love great food this is more of a "foodie" place meaning this is a place more for those folks with an eclectic palate. Bartender and servers though were phenomenal and super friendly !
Brian Downing
Outstanding food and service. Our server was a pro and was attentive to every detail. Loved the 5 course tasting menu. Great salmon, scallop, and tuna dishes our night. Drinks were great too. Note that 20% gratuity is included.
Malia Nakamura
I haven't eaten at this spot but live right up the street and love visiting the little grocery they've set up during COVID! I walk there sometimes and the wine selection is great, I feel like I'm living in Paris or something. A bit expensive and limited to treat as an actual grocery store, but it is great to grab a nice wine for dinner or a chocolate bar for dessert.
Kelsey Kuhn Eubank
Great selection of wines with a very helpful staff! Loved browsing the selection of meats, cheeses and other items! Also got a few items to go from the southern pop up shop including the fried chicken sandwich, pimento cheese and chicken n dumplings, all delicious!
Jeremy Morton-Maxson
Not pleased with the value of their fixed menu shellfish tower. While the food/service was good it didn't rise to the level of gourmet. I would have been happy with the same experience at 1/3 the price.
Willow Wittig
I have so many things to say about this place. It feels really dreamy and the service, the wine, the cocktails, the food, the atmosphere--all the things, this place has it all. I keep thinking about this warm cocktail with almonds.... So delicious. And the wine selection is excellent. It's the place I reserve to myself if I really want to spoil myself.
Jerome Espinosa Baladad
I had a halibut dinner here with my friend, and we also had red wine, bread and butter as well. It's a good food place and with very good service. The weather was very nice that day. We should have eaten at the table outside but it doesn't.
Kazmo Groove
I asked a local bartender for recommendations and this place was on his list. Supposedly they have good sea urchin but unfortunately it was out of season when I went there. So I had a glass of red wine from France and pork and chicken pate. Very good. The decor was simple. Not over the top. Next time, I would love to try their sea urchin for sure.
Josh Kalla
Great French food, amazing cocktails, wonderful service. Will definitely go back. Only negative is it was hot inside. Luckily we were able to sit outside.
Cooper Smith
I’ve always loved this place and during the pandemic they’ve gone above and beyond to not only stay afloat, but really stand out. I’m a food and bev industry worker, and I have continually used L’Oursin as my example of “how you make it work during a pandemic.”
The Aprés Ski was a better fondue experience than I had in Switzerland. Incredible charcuterie and then you dip it in most perfect melty cheese goodness sauce bubbling, ok yes. They provide a personal heater, so we were perfectly warm, but a strong cup of delicious vin chaud helped as well. Everything was truly on point.
Their grocery is a perfectly curated selection of natural wine, ready to cook meals, local treats, and everything to make your home bar ready to make any cocktail. It took me right back to Parisian neighborhood markets. Also, to all my southern friends, THEY HAVE BOJANGLES SEASONING AND DUKES MAYONAISE. I can’t rave about this place enough, I never write reviews but after hearing continued praise and then experiencing the perfection myself, I had to spread the good word.
Patrick Hyde
Amazing wine, we had the candied mushroom riesling and it was phenomenal. Also every food we ordered was of the highest quality and preparation. The service was also excellent, hip yet following fine dining standards
Orson Stadler
A quasi-French restaurant with a strong wine list and well executed food. The atmosphere in the restaurant is slightly strange, with some large open spaces meaning it can feel slightly 'muted'. We also found the service to be quite slow, with only two waiters visible the night we visited.
Nicholas Kreucher
Nice atmosphere and food, but sorta terrible for large groups. For our group of 10 they forced us to do family style, bringing out shared plates from a fixed menu. Some things were not easy to divide up, more like a plate of food meant for one person they repurposed as "family style". Other things were simply not large enough for all 10 people to try. Super slow too, even through the restaurant was otherwise mostly empty.
Marc Chamness
Went tonight with my fiance. Did the full, multi course meal with wine pairings. Was there for about 2 hours. The food was great, the company amazing, the service really good. Didnt take pics because focus was away from tech tonight... but cant wait to come back. Best date night in a long time.
Alina Smotrova
Really nice place with great food and service. They seated us promptly for lunch even though we were 30 minutes late for our reservation. The menu is full of possibilities, we had an excellent seafood platter for 2 which was precisely the right size to be a starter and a wonderfully cooked St Pierre fish which we were shown first.
Great place, highly recommend!
Rachel Walker
This is the best f***ing restaurant I've ever been to
Susie H.
This is my new favorite place! We had a lovely time at the bar, ordered all our food there and engaged with the 2 bartenders a fair amount. Wine and cocktails were delicious, as was the food. Best dishes: sunchoke salad, steelhead with beans and mushrooms, and the rhubarb financier. Go!
LB Vogl
The bbq tofu sandwich is incredible. Drive 30 min for it regularly. Fries, also very good. And a fun little shop to explore for wine and chocolate bars.
Johanna Graf-Gutierrez
The best salmon I've ever had.
Brined perfectly. Cooked perfectly. Presented perfectly.
Every time we visit, we know we will be taken care of down to the last detail. The staff is always warm, professional and knowledgeable. The food and beverage service is always interesting and delicious. We always leave entirely satisfied.
Jeffrey Schur
The entire menu is fantastic, but I have to give special praise to the coho salmon. It is simply the most beautifully textured and subtly flavorful piece of fish I have ever had. So often I find fish prepared as merely a vehicle for sauces or seasoning, but the chef at L'Oursin really understands how to let the fish shine. Magnifique!
Jason Campbell
I LOVE L'Oursin. Everyone was very friendly and the food was delicious. The ambiance is also very special and they had a great wine list. I appreciate their attentive, friendly, service and personalized recommendations.
I just miss their Sunday brunch SO MUCH! It was my favorite. :(
Sharath Bennur
I'm not the biggest connesuier of French food, but I really liked the food. The chef and the French person in our group thought the food was good too. Learnt a couple of new things about French cooking and everything we had was very good, except for one salad that seemed surprisingly simple and bland.
Andrew House
We went on a Friday night to celebrate a promotion. Nice wines by the glass. We each had fish, pickled veggies, and excellent deserts. Busy, but not full. This is an excellent light counter to 7Beef.
Marc Stifelman
consistently excellent service, food, cocktails, wine and spirits
Stina Betz
This was the best place I ate in Seattle. The menu rotates, but if possible try to get there while they have the gnocchi with Dungeness crab and mushrooms. It was rich and the gnocchi had an incredible bite with a crunchy outside.
Jean-Pierre Boespflug
A true french bistro ambiance. Original selection of small bites with well selected wines makes this place a find. The owners are not french but visit France frequently blending authenticity with their own inspiration.
Alison Holcomb
Enjoyed the seven-course, chef's choice tasting menu. Five of the seven course were spot on. A dish of French gnocchi with greens, fava beans, and capers didn't quite come together texturally: the stems of the greens were far too tough, and they didn't mesh well with the other ingredients to make a bite feel like an integrated sensation. The peanut butter bar and banana ice cream dessert had a similar texture problem with the crust being a bit too tough and the bar and ice cream a bit too alike in texture. It's flavor came off as a fancy Snickers bar.
All the other dishes were delightful--a beautiful sliced sea scallop amuse bouche with citrus and berry, a perfectly buttery slice of tuna sashimi with bright cucumber and herbs, a cold kohlrabi soup that was a knockout, farm style foie gras, a powerful truffle laced cheese paired with a funky tart and effervescent plum wine, and tasty salmon with crispy skin over a savory bean and bay shrimp medley.
The atmosphere is charming, and the staff warm and kind. A lovely evening overall!
JP
Brilliantly French Inspired cuisine. A true fine dining experience! Every dish is made with perfection! Amazing staff and service! Great ambiance and location! A gem of a restaurant and a definite must try! Highly recommended!
Sallyann Corn
L'Oursin has beautifully turned the front of their space into a neighborhood mercantile. Complete with liquers, an amazing wine selection, cheeses, flower arrangements, and pantry items. We just picked up the loveliest assortment of wines based on expert advice.
Sarah Huerta (MacPherson)
Service was amazing. We sat at the bar and were wonderfully cared for. Had delicious wine and cod tartare. Fantastic experience as recommended by locals, definitely felt homey, not touristy. Will definitely return when back in Seattle.
Ashley Krider
We had a sweet and COVID-safe “Apres ski” experience on the private-feeling patio, including fondue and accompaniments and mulled wine. The staff was warm (as was the personal heater!)- go support them!
Alex Lowe
We go here for every special occasion. I get excited about everything we order and am always blown away by how much better it is than I expected. I mouthgasmed from their creme brûlée. Thrice. The food is so amazing but I think it’s their drink menu that stands out. While everyone else in Seattle recycles a few classics with weird new ingredients their bar tenders create combinations you’ve never dreamed of. I wish I had 3 livers so I could drink the menu every time I go there. PLUS the descriptions are hilarious. Just go there for a glass of wine. And then try everything else.
Nancy Rosenberg
Delicious, thoughtfully prepared dinner using locally sourced seasonal foods. Modern French cuisine We had a fabulous scallop appetizer, duck confit and roast chicken, among other things.
Kay Katz
I thought the food and service was excellent! Very friendly staff. This is the Seapea Royale!
Ashley Bumatay
We went on a Friday night. While all the tables were full for the night, there was plenty of space at the bar where they do full dinner service. The bartenders were lovely. The food and drinks were delicious. It focuses primarily on French seafood. My favorite was the soupe de poisson with rockfish and crab. It had puff pastry baked over it.
Matt Hall
Great little French spot. Had the multi-course meal recommendation with the wine pairings for a celebration date night and couldn't have enjoyed our dinner more. Great ambiance and wait staff.
Julia Auger
An exceptional restaurant. Total care and elegance executed in a casual elevated environment by talented and educated team. Superior wine list offering natural smaller grower producer wines. Tasting the PNW through the techniques of French cooking. Bravo to these people.
Ingrid Lyublinsky
Willie is great and so are the little shishito covered in lard snacks! Also enjoyed a wonderful glass of Ramato!
Alison
Lovely little shop with to-go meals, wine and pantry staples, amazing burgers and absolutely wonderful employees/owners. Thankful they remained open and pivoted in these weird times.
David
Love the atmosphere and service. Good spacing between tables. Solid and not pretentious. Good chefs tasting menu. I only wish the portions were a bit larger.
Stephanie Rush
Everything I've tried here has been absolutely delicious. If nothing else, you should go to experience the hilarious wit of Kathryn who pens the drink menu - every time I go it changes and I'm tempted to steal one so I can read them again later. Highly recommend!
Mark Hancheroff
We liked getting dinner at the bar even better than at a table. The food is wonderful, and the bartenders are great to chat with and make amazing cocktails. Wine is excellent.
Tyler Robinson
Charming neighborhood restaurant with small French-inspired plates and great selection of natural wines by the glass or bottle
Ian Gorton
One of Seattle's best restaurants. The poached salmon is a signature. Tartare arctic char not far behind. I find the wine list a tad eccentric but byob solves that 😆. Worth a good bottle. …
Nick Sayers
Wow. One of the most inspired places I've eaten in Seattle. The drinks, the food, the dessert are all stellar. I can't think of a better place to get all three and fall absolutely in love with. The service was also beyond amazing.
Isa Farnik
Knowledgeable and passionate staff. Ask about green chartreuse if you want to make the owner's day. Expect immaculately prepared French sea cuisine expertly paired with wines.
Aaron Luce
Great place. We tried many items on the menu. All very tasty. Good wine and cider. Ice cream and sorbet made in house. Good service.
Aaron Harrison
Could not more highly recommend their Après Ski fondue experience! Perfect pandemic date night—bring blankets if it's cold.
Alex
A lovely place for dinner. The food is light, flavorful and well executed. Friendliest service. The space was also very comfortable and never too loud.
Mary Gravelle
One of the best meals I've had in a long, long time! Bring a date or friends and eat your heart out!!! AMAZING service!!!

Limited menu in our opinion and service although very pleasant and professional was on the slow side. Good food well prepared but not exceptional.

5 stars food and service! I just wish the ambience/furniture was at par... It's ok, but it makes you demanding when the rest it's exceptionally good!

Good French food, very northwest sensibilities. I'm not sure why it's in the Eater list, but I don't regret going.

(Translation) Good meal, fresh products and homemade dishes. However, bad value for money. $5 for a little bread and butter, $9 for a very pale chocolate mousse, 20% tip included automatically on the bill, and the surprise comes at the time of payment. Very surprising from a "French restaurant"
(Original)
