Reviews of HSL

Exceptional flavors in a lovely space with adroit service that is warm and appropriately friendly without hovering. That chef knows how to cook. We enjoyed apps, cocktails and entrees and loved every bite. We would go back in a heartbeat.
We walked in so we were expecting a long wait, but got to jump on one end of a wonderfully long community table and found the setting to be perfect for our party of three.
Open kitchen creates some heat as the evening wears on so the AC is noticeable early in the night, so bring a jacket.

Highly recommend! Delicious!! Love the atmosphere. Love the food. The combination of flavors is impeccable. Love the presentation. Love the Lounge sofa. Love the details. Ordered a couple of mocktails, the cauliflower, a salad, ricotta sourdough, steak, salmon, & desserts. All home runs. Truly amazing experience. Thank you, HSL! Will be delighted to visit you again!

This place is our new favorite in Salt Lake City! We came here for our anniversary and the food was outstanding. We started with the brussel sprouts and sourdough toast, both great. My wife got a burger, which she loved. I got the pork shank, which sounded odd with the whipped ranch and franks red hot but was amazing! I could eat it every night of the week. We finished with French press coffee and a chocolate torte, which was phenomenal. The drinks were great as well. Our server Anna was energetic and had great recommendations. We will be back soon!

My wife and I ate here for our anniversary and loved it! My wife got the New York steak and the sour dough toast. She loved both. I ordered the Cauliflower and Pork Shank. The Cauliflower was SO good, definitely recommend. The pork shank was cooked to perfect and was paired well with a creamy dip and apples. Highly recommend trying HSL out.

I love the feel of this place and the staff were very nice! The whiskey caramel pudding is a must try! It was gone before I could snag a picture. The I like that the menu is small but diverse and everything is a great choice! The waiters explained everything about the meat and cheese board, and made sure to ask about allergies. I would come here again for a splurge night out!

Second time at HSL. On our first visit we shared maybe 10 dishes with friends. They were all excellent. Standouts were the cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Chicories and broccolini was also superb. Cocktails were outstanding, wine selection certainly ample. The desserts were also delicious, particularly the chocolate torte.
Service was engaged and friendly. They obviously had training in managing and clearing a table. It was notably unobtrusive. The decor is comfortable, rustic and hip at the same time. Park in the back if you’re able, otherwise on the street.
The only miss for us was the burger, which was still good, just not at the level of Back 40, Owl Bar or Black Sheep. The fries were tasty, although quite oily. As a general note, be prepared for salty food. Not an issue for us, but something our entire party noted.
Will definitely be back. The food, service and atmosphere are welcoming and clearly a lot of work went into all three.

Love it. I would highly recommend just ordering a few of the appetizers and sharing with friends. We started with the buttermilk biscuit, cauliflower, and then a HSL burger and raditori for the main course. It was all amazing but the appetizers were ultra amazing! We will be back again!

Fantastic food and cocktails. Started with the generous meat and cheese plate, which could satisfy three or four as a starter. The General Tsao cauliflower was inspired and unexpected, fried and flavorful. Pork shank was filling and delicious. I didn't have the trout special but my friend said it was tasty. Bourbon cocktail and old fashioned were on point. Nice modern decor. Service was a bit spotty but the server acknowledged it and referred to a busy night. Overall a great experience.

Exceptional restaurant. The service is sometimes slow but I still give it 5 stars.
I am big on restaurants that change their menu and introduce new dishes and HSL does exactly that!! They have creative dishes on their menu that are delicious and incorporate different flavors. Also considers what’s seasonal and I love that it fits that mood as well.
I’ve come here twice now and both times have impressed me. Their dishes aren’t exactly cheap but it’s worth it. Also I will say now, the desserts are something you can pass on.
Specific dishes:
1. HSL burger: solid, not outstanding but good and juicy.
2. Filet mignon: cooked well, nice side dishes to complement it.
3. Cauliflower appetizer: absolutely delicious, it’s a must try. It’s a bit spicy but not unbearable.
4. Chickpea salad: delicate and delicious. Very nice pairing of flavors and ingredients. This salad is very refreshing, perfect in the summer time.
5. Sourdough toast: good bread, although it was a big soggy because of the toppings. The blueberry ricotta topping was good but Between that and the berry compote, I would have liked it to be a tinge sweeter.
6. Flatbread: great bread and combo of flavors.
I highly recommend HSL! Also make a reservation in advance to avoid a wait.
Great ambiance too.

The food was worth the price! If you’re looking for a restaurant with good vibes and great food, go to HSL! We ordered the cauliflower for our appetizer which was amazing. We ordered the strawberry Thai basil pok pok soda for drinks, and it had a unique and flavorful taste. For entrees, I ordered the pork shank—everything on the plate worked perfectly—and my boyfriend ordered the burger. For dessert we got the chocolate torte which was rich and flavorful. The rich chocolate of the cake was balanced with the scoop of vanilla icecream served with it.

Great vibe, excellent service and even better food!
Appetizer: General Tso's cauliflower/Sriracha vinaigrette/pickled Fresno (yummy but fried)
Salad: Chicory salad (I think this is the name - this was very good. Fresh and I wish I had more by the time I was done)
Entree: Pork shank/Frank's red hot glaze/whipped ranch/apple butter (big entree but came right off the bone - very good)
Indoor and outdoor seating - parking in back is limited so we parked down the street and walked down. Came during the week and it was busy so reservation is probably recommended on weekends!

Came across this gem when I was downtown. Tried their burger and let me tell you it was delicious! I’m giving a 4 star because it seemed a little over priced for what it was but other than that it was great. Our waiter was phenomenal. Literally on it with refills and checking in on us despite being busy that night which I so appreciate. What a cute little place too. Parking was a pain. That’s to be expected downtown though.
Robert Lake
Fantastic!
A review of few words needed as you can’t seem to miss here whether it’s the cocktails or the food you will be happy with your selections.
General Tso’s Cauliflower was hands down my favorite but everything was fantastic and I can’t wait to return to try more from the menu.
Lipstick Revolt
Everything is very good. Drink are great. The cauliflower is beyond delicious and so is the burger.
Lee Turner
Delicious food especially the biscuit! However the burger was thin and nothing special. I don't think the food was worth the cost. $10 for one biscuit!
Clayton Snell
Really excellent dinner. I had the General Tso's Cauliflower and the scallops. Both were fantastic. The mushrooms included in the scallop dish were a highlight. Very cute ambiance and the chairs are hella comfy. Highly recommend
Dallas Merrill
Everything about our dinner at HSL was top notch. The atmosphere, the lighting, the music, everything was at the perfect level. Much like other reviewers we tried the cauliflower app and it was incredible, along with the pork shank and the new York main dishes. Seriously, everything we ordered was delicious and their service was just as good as the food. We can't wait to come back.
Amy Cox
What a wonderful dinner! We loved each dish we ordered: buttermilk biscuit, cauliflower appetizer, pork shank, and mushroom bolognese pasta. There were vegetarian options for me and great meat options for my husband. Dessert was also perfect.
Service was impeccable. Our waiter had great suggestions. I'm so glad we finally got around to coming here, it's now on our list of best restaurants for a nice meal in the downtown area. Thank you for a lovely evening!
Evan Lerdall
I really don’t know how to describe HSL other than UNREAL! Great atmosphere, amazing staff and delicious food. To start, Meat and cheese board was perfect. Apple toast was perfect. Cauliflower was perfect. For entrees, everyone in my party tried a different entree and I would happily go back for any of them. Pork Shank with Franks Red Hot glaze and Ranch Whip was my personal favorite. Will absolutely be coming back to HSL next time I’m in town.
Kit Richards
HSL has a very good vibe for contemporary dining experience, from the location, interior design to how everyone is dressed. However, I wouldn't say the food is on par with other restaurants of the same price tag. We were in a group of 6, ordered a few dishes to share and a couple of main dishes. Brussel sprouts, cauliflower were good but very salty. Cheese and meat selection is quite good, but it needs more bread/cracker to stay in proportion with the meat and cheese. House-made pickle was probably one of the highlights.
Abbas Mirfa
From the minute we stepped in the door until we left we felt welcome and pampered. The ambiance is fabulous with quaint banquets and cozy dining areas. The wait staff were top drawer and the food was delicious. Perfect finish to the evening was a complimentary birthday ice cream complete with candles and a birthday / thank you card from the staff.
Lauren Stratton
The food itself was mediocre. However I think it may be due to the pandemic, which is so unfortunate!! I love this restaurant, they have amazingly talented chefs who can & have created wonderful dishes with very few ingredients. This time was unfortunately a disappointment, it was my birthday & as noted our food was not as good as it could have been. Give it a try, then another when the food market becomes more reliable! You won't regret it.
Rebekah Smith
Absolutely wonderful! From the delightful hosting team fitting us in with our baby at the last minute, to a beautifully designed space, to friendly & fast service, to a talented bartender, we loved it all. The food was delicious—I wanted to order everything. All the things you actually want to eat. Highly recommend the buttermilk biscuit with honey butter and sea salt, and the cauliflower with sriracha vinaigrette, then topped off with a gorgeous chocolate torte with blackberry sauce. Thank you all for a lovely dinner. Just wish we lived here so we could come back over & over!
Wissali Holman
The whiskey caramel pudim is my FAVORITE! I’m so happy they brought it back to their menu! The fried chicken is yummy and the cauliflower appetizer too. Their servers are always friendly and food amazing. Love the ambiance as well.
Nicole Hamic
Absolutely delicious. We've been to their Park City restaurant and had a perfect meal and we were not disappointed by this new concept. Yes, it's pricey, but not surprising these days with the costs of running a restaurant of this caliber. It's nice to see real food actually coming to SLC
Vel M
This place is just okay. It reminds me of when you order something from Amazon and you ask yourself later“ did I order this?”. No salads on the menu. The flatbread was really flat, even hard to chewy, and $22. The drinks were good but weird and pricy. The burger was fine, not sure if there was cheese at all. The crew was nice.
Matthew Argyle
Great food but price vs value was lacking. I ordered a kombucha and it came out as a 5oz pour. I was expecting more but I guess I'm new to high brow food experiences. The New York steak ($42) was smaller than the 6oz steak at Texas Roadhouse ($10) but was slightly more delicious. At least it was farm to table...right? You know where your food comes from. The cow who contributed her life to my meal was named Tina. She had a compelling backstory and a life marred by tragedy. Knowing that made the dining experience more intimate. The service was also amazing.
Karina Bertelli
Oh HSL! You never disappoint! This is one of my favorite foodie restaurants in Salt Lake City! I love how often they change up their menu. The general Tso’s cauliflower is to die for (like my mouth is watering as I type this). Their appetizers are all delicious and every entree that I have tried is amazing. The way their dishes are plated makes it perfect for your Instagram posts and the whole atmosphere is unreal. I love their staff! My husband and I love coming here for date night (pre-covid) I haven’t dined in this year yet.

We arrived at 5:15 and it was not very crowded at the start. The food was delicious and an imaginative take on most of the menu items. We went with the staff recommendations and were very happy with the food that was served. I had not heard of HSL before tonight, but I am very glad that we gave it a try.
Kearl Hat
I had the Shellfish special which was Clams & Mussels & Shrimp & it was really good. Also the ambience is cozy and the waitstaff are polite & professional. Good place to go if you're looking for higher-end dining in Salt Lake.
Gouryella Harayda
Came here for a work outing. It was very easy to accommodate for our large group. The place has a very comfortable and modern vibe. Food was incredible and the service was amazing. Everyone in the party loved their food. The cauliflower was highly recommended and did not disappoint. I had a burger and asked for it to be medium rare and actually got a burger that was cooked just right. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful. Very enjoyable experience all around. I'm excited to come back and try more food.

Very good restaurant. No question about it.
Highs:
spicy fried cauliflower was amazing. The cilantro and peppers complemented this dish perfectly.
Buttermilk biscuit. Unreal. The salt was the game changer. SO GOOD. the honey, butter, salt and biscuit is just wow town.
They have topo chick. Enough said.
Lows:
Burger. I feel like it fell a little short of expectations. Very good, no question, but the tomato jam and white cheese (which I don’t think was American) were nice, but not great. The pickled cabbage as well. As a whole it was a nice burger, but again, not great. Best part was the bun.
Fries. Over salted. My mouth is still reeling from the salt.
Service. Everyone was totally nice and great, but didn’t totally know what they were talking about. I asked about the burger and the waitress said “rated the best burger in Utah”, and naturally I asked, “by whom”, which she then didn’t know who had rated it so highly, so naturally I was skeptical. Then I asked about their blend of beef (cause I love burgs) and what they told me just didn’t seem right.
Anyways. Good. Not great. Would return to try the chicken and get the biscuit again!

This place is always nice to visit. The food is great quality. The burger is a great staple along with the cheese and meat board. The servers have always been helpful and accommodating.

Had a lovely low key dinner. Great service. The beet salad, general tso cauliflower and kale salad were excellent starters. The burger was cooked perfectly at medium (as requested). The bucatini was a light pasta dish. The fried chicken was huge! A massive chicken breast! The poblano crema was delightful as well.
Dave Maack
The staff is super nice and the interior is really swanky. The burger is so bad for the price I would rather go to in and out. All of the other food is awesome and the cocktails were good. I would have rated lower if everything else wasn’t so good.
Sergio Lopez-Peralta
Fantastic all around. The service, staff, and the food were all outstanding. You have got to try the cauliflower! We were so surprise with the amazing taste, texture, and all around flavor! I recommend 10/10.

Loved our experience at HSL!
Definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time. There is a small, SMALL parking lot behind the restaurant, but chances are it will be full so plan on parking on the street. The ambience to this place is lovely, with dim lighting and beautiful decor. I especially loved their cute seating arrangement ideas, with some couches/fancier chairs scattered in different places. The table was set beautifully and the waiter explained the menu very well. This was our first time here so we didn't know much about ordering, so wait for your waiter to explain things if you haven't been here before. We ordered the Peppers as an appetizer- came in a hot bowl with spiced hummus and they were good. For the main meal, we ordered the HSL burger, medium rare, and the fried chicken. The fried chicken was DELICIOUS! It wasn't heavy AT ALL and was somehow pretty light, considering it was fried chicken. The burger was AMAZING! I hate medium rare anything because I can't stand the blood, but there wasn't a trace of any liquid on this burger and it was absolutely perfect! It is also the cheapest thing on the menu, so that was a plus.
Overall, really neat experience. Definitely try it!
Oliver B
The brussel sprouts were ok. They were a little under cooked. The Chilean salmon had a thick scaley skin and fatty layer. Finally, the "Gin" and "Vodka" cocktails were watered down compared to what you'd get at a typical bar.
The worst part of our night was our server, Bunny. She was brief with us and pushy. The most apathetic experience I've had at a restaurant short of the servicer completely forgetting about you for 30 minutes at a time.
The atmosphere was great. Cosy and intimate and here's a small dedicated parking lot in the back.
It's sad that we didn't get the level of service this place deserves.
Brad
I am not a poor man. But nor am I a rich man. Thus If I go out to spend $40 per entree for myself and others, not among the least of which my sister in law whose birthday it was, I expect really good service…..on par with the past several times I’ve eaten at HSL. Hence it pains me to write such a review. The food was stellar as usual. Which speaks to the fundamental goodness that this restaurant is capable of. Our server Jordan mentioned several times that this was a chaotic night, and maybe it was, but by the time we were halfway through our appetizers, there were only a few other tables being served (and not only by him) and we were left waiting between check-ins to the point that yawns overcame conversation, and the desire to order more food and/or dessert was overcome with the desire to hit the road for cheaper faster sweet treats. Started dinner at 7:30, and left at 10:30 with us asking for the check before they remembered to bring my digestif grappa I had ordered 20 minutes earlier. To Jordan’s credit, he comped the grappa. But overall, a little sad and a little mad about this $250 subpar experience from such an excellent spot.

If you are a foodie and looking for new, fresh flavors in Salt Lake...this is your spot!
The waiter was super knowledgeable and very helpful.
We got the pork shank and a few appetizers!
Try: Cauliflower app, Meat & Cheese App, as well as the Pork Shank!

Get a “Handle” on this place if you haven’t already.
My husband was driving by this place for a couple years and we just recently figure out what it was.
Only wished we would have tried this establishment sooner! Open kitchen design and a quaint atmosphere.
Don’t let the bar be overlooked for optional seating Not to mention if you like to order more than 1 appetizer it will give you a little more room to spread the goods.
From entry to the restaurant to the departure our experience was wonderful and would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone.
The staff was pleasant and friendly. They all helped take care of us instead of the usually single assigned server.
The food was unique, refreshing, savory and sensational.
All but one dish...which my dear chef husband listed as a rookie mistake on the fried chicken. Later confirmed that it was a newer culinary graduate working the fryer that night.
So many amazing dishes I could recommend from the Honeycrisp Apple on homemade artisan sourdough with a beautiful charred crust...to the Humachi Crudo with the sweetness of the ponzu.
Need to satisfy the sweet tooth the chocolate dessert or even try the apple tartan with potato chip crust.
We did take home a small caramel “something or rather” with Chex mix...but I would highly recommend the two above.
But one of the most interesting and scrumptious dishes was the Cauliflower. It was fried with a very light breading and tossed in a general tso’s style sauce with pickled peppers. The cauliflower was cooked to perfection in tenderness and gave a very meaty texture. Without knowing what this was, one could easily mistaken it for a chicken dish. Don’t hesitate to give this dish a try...you will be more than happy you did!
We can’t wait to come back here. One of our new top choices for restaurants.
Updated 01/16/2020
Still at the top of our list to dine. Although we ordered some of the same dishes the presentation was fresh and new. Made if feel like a whole new dish.
Also tried a couple new dishes. The scallop tostados were DEVINE.... sweet, tender and left you wanting more. We took a leap of faith, and by the thumbs up for reassurance from Chef Shaw, we ordered the fried chicken. It WAS done right this time. The breading stayed in tact and the chicken full of flavor and moist. Disappointed with the lemon panna cotta as I couldn’t even taste the lemon. But maybe it was just an off night for dessert as everything was spot on. And a shout out to the service and staff AGAIN...pleasant and friendly
John “Paul” Brantly
Gastronomic SLC rated HSL as the top fine dining restaurant in Salt Lake. I agree with this rating completely. I had high expectations going in and they surpassed all of them. The interiors were trending and slightly eclectic. But done in a tasteful and professional manner. The service was over the top awesome. The employees were very professional and knowledgeable. The best way to describe the food was dimensional. Each dish had multiple layers of flavor. You can tell the amount of time that each dish takes. Each dish was a symphony of textures, tastes, and color. We started with the cauliflower. It was my favorite part of our entire meal. We followed it up with the pork shank and fried chicken. Our dessert was also stunning. We go the chocolate tart. I would go into depth about each dish and why you should order them but they change their menu frequently. So it is sufficient to say that I would trust anything on that menu to be delicious and a experience you won't forget.

What a lovely place!! Service is amazing and the waitress' recommendations were on point. The hamachi appetizer was light refreshing and a burst of flavour. The cauliflower with sirarcha honey sauce was awesome too. Perfect balance of sweet and spicy. It's hearty enough as a main! I had the fried chicken with brussel sprout and grilled yam. So delicious. I love the combination of bright bold flavours. I'd definitely come back.
Cole Frandsen
HSL has created a phenomenal dining experience in such a beautiful space! Each member of the staff was friendly and welcoming. The food is modern and fresh, presented immaculately, and tastes delicious! I highly recommend a visit (or two, or three) to HSL.
Elijah Quartey
I was skeptical of their famous cauliflower dish, however I was glad I got it. I don't think I want to eat cauliflower any other way! The fried chicken was also pretty tasty. My friend got the heart fish dish and we were both surprised at how moist it was. We finished with a chocolate tart for dessert and I wasn't disappointed. The balance between all the sauces was incredible. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. I hope to go back soon.

I was really torn on how many stars to give this restaurant. Here was my experience last night for my birthday dinner.
1. We were seated promptly 👍🏼
2. Then we waited 15 minutes before anyone from the wait staff acknowledged us. During this time There were many waiters hanging out around the open kitchen area. No water, no ‘hello someone will be with you shortly’....just nothing! 👎🏼
3. Finally, we went through 5 waiters during the meal, each of them telling us that they apologized for the wait and telling us there was confusion of who was taking our table....not sure why each needed to tell us that they didn’t know what was going on.🤷🏼♀️👎🏼
4. The manager of the restaurant came over and apologized, also informing us that there was miscommunication amongst the wait staff. So being a nice guy he offered us an appetizer (that he chose) to apologize for basically ignoring us for 15 minutes. 👍🏼
5. The said appetizer never came to our table!👎🏼
6. so near the end of the meal , when the manager came to check on us again we said we never received it, he went and got it personally. He then offered us a free dessert! 👍🏼
***FINAL THOUGHTS: Overall the food was very good and I enjoyed the time out with my husband. The service was horrible for the most part, but the manager tried to make up for that.
I would have rather had amazing service than free food, but I understand people make mistakes. I think a pre-dinner briefing would be a good idea for this place so the waiters know who they are serving.
Jory Allen
Best fried chicken of my life. Excellent burger. The pork chops were succulent. The cauliflower as an appetizer was perfection.
Cozy atmosphere. Small menu that changes often. One of my favorite spots in Salt Lake.
V
WOW. One of the best meals I’ve ever had from start to finish. Every dish we ordered was beautifully crafted in flavor palette as well as presentation. I was truly struck by the dynamic flavor pairings, the freshness of ingredients and level of service. This was truly an elevated fine dining experience. My favorite was the apple toast- absolutely superb.
Jordan Bingham
We love HSL! It's our "go-to" for anniversaries, birthdays, and other special occasions. The menu changes quite a bit, but everything we have tried has been great! The dishes have so much thought put into them and it shows.
Some of my favorites that I included pictures of are the seeded cracker, the pork shank, and the whiskey caramel pudding.
Amy Lucas
Cauliflower appetizer is always superb. We’ve been here twice. We split the burger which was delicious and the fries had good seasoning.
Scott Paul
Called a friend to ask for best burger in Salt Lake and he suggested HSL and we were not disappointed. The decor and ambiance is great and the chef seems to know what he is doing because this is his second location and it was packed. If you can wait for a table they have a bar and communal table. We both got the burgers and ate them before we could take a photo
J Smith
The food here is fantastic, with a warm welcoming atmosphere. Service has been top notch every time I've been to HSL. One of my favorites iN downtown SLC.
Madelyn Moon
After walking into what feels like a modern-yet-retro jungle of green, you are greeted by a menu of choices that cannot lead you astray. The cauliflower dish, peach salad, chicken and waffles and eggs benedict were our picks and they were absolutely amazing. I love going to restaurants where you can tell the chief has integrity with their ingredients and a love for unusual flavor combinations.
If you are in Salt Lake City, stop here! ♥️
Jake Wolford
A fun, hip restaurant in downtown Salt Lake. The interior features fun design elements and lots of greenery, the staff is super friendly, and the food is excellent. It's on the pricier end, but you get what you pay for. Consider me a fan!

AMAZING gem! Fabulous food - & our server Erickson did a fabulous job serving our large party! Definitely recommend!! 🥰 …
Muhammad Hussein
Very friendly and attentive service. Ian and Anna behind the bar were very helpful. Had a great cocktail to start off. The steak with chimichurri was cooked to perfection. Dessert was good. Good selection of wine. Could be a bit pricey for some folks but it’s money well spent.
Jonathan Stout
Honestly, food was fine... But at the price it should have been better than fine. Great ambiance and great music. Great wait staff. Using a knife to cut beef in a bowl is a little tricky. I've cooked using sous vide at home and so I expected it to be more tender. This was rather dry and stringy. My wife's burger was lacking flavor and maybe overdone. If I could give 3.5 stars I would. So between the two of our reviews we hit that number. Doubt we'll return
Mickey Jervin
Good service, the bartender A-A-Ron was fantastic. Close to the best cauliflower hot dish I ever have tasted. The rest of the dishes was very tasteful.
Mark Jessup
Food was beyond amazing. Sauces seem to be the restaurant's forte, as they add complexity to each dish. Service was less than stellar, as our waiter forgot an item we ordered, and seemed uncomfortable answering questions and describing menu items. Would definitely go back though!
Vlas Lezin
Dined on 8/19 @7pm: Very very mediocre if you know good quality food. Califlower is just steamed with some generic sauce, sourdough toast is too sweet. Pork shank is barely edible -- too dry, too salty, too spicy, to sweet. It is kinda funny how they missed every flavor with it.
Cocktails are ok, service is average.
Eat elsewhere.
Michael Holbrook
Great food. Tends to be on the spicy side. I got the steak and loved it. We shared the cheese board.
Alex Derbes
My favorite restaurant in SLC. Our rather diverse crew of an Indian MBA in a suit and tie, computer geek, car mechanic and solar installer all had a fantastic dinner.
Jeffrey Welch
We had a great time with the fantastic apps. We ordered a couple mains and they were excellent but expensive. I had fish of the day which was sea bass (pic).
Jordan Burleson
One of the best dining experiences I have had in a while. It started with the ability to reserve a table online the same day, the servers were friendly and helpful, and the dishes were in season and delicious. One of the best scallops I've ever had, the pork shank melted in my mouth, and the cauliflower starter changed my beliefs about the vegetable.
Nicole Matchett
The foood is so delicious with an incredible space to host! My only thing that isn't 5 stars is having staff roll their eyes at me when I order something they disagree with. That's the part I don't find as attractive as a business owner myself.
Overall, it's an incredible place to dine and I would highly recommend coming too🙌
Jared Stanger
Great Service, surprisingly quiet for how jam packed the place was. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer and their burger. The food came quickly. It was fantastic, perfectly cooked with complex flavours you normally do not get when eating a burger. The house pickles are good, I ate the separately from the burger, but they would compliment the burger very well. The salt and vinegar fries had just the right amount of vinegar on them so you could get the contrast but not enough to soak or over power the fries. I can't wait to go back and try their other dishes.
Vinh Lu (Vinhgetsin)
The environment is very laid back, there's not a lot of options on their menu, but what they do have is pretty good. Price is higher than other places but it's not unreasonable. Definitely have to check out when downtown.
Chris Merrill
First time here and I will come back. Service was great. Food was delicious. Wine list by the glass I appreciated.
Vincent Fu
Awesomely unique and creative cocktails, combined with flavorful food and great service. Had a fantastic first experience and will definitely be back in the future! Small parking lot available in the back.
Tyler Nelson
Everyplace was booked, we were driving around looking for anything and stumbled on this place and wow! Love it, food is incredible and we always get the drink roulette which the bar tenders nail it every time!
CK OnePlus
Fish was excellent, well cooked and wonderfully spiced. Charcuterie was also a delight. Ending with a sweet finish with the pudding. Highly recommend dining here at least once.
michael terner
Everything was excellent; fine service, interesting and well executed cocktails, and a diverse menu with tasty small & large plates. Only issue was an inexplicable music playlist that negatively impacted the fine dining atmosphere (think loud late night club music).
Don LaVange (Wickenden)
Great atmosphere and people. Food is pretty and mostly great. Great bartender. Feel like the New York Steak was surprisingly gristly. God, I love the Carmel pudding paired with a high end Bourbon.
Kathryn Ross
Food and service were great. Staff is knowledgeable about all menu items and very helpful us newcomers in how to order our meals.

One of the best restaurants in salt lake hands down.
Update: I don't live in SLC anymore but I came back here a few days ago and it's still every bit as good as I remembered. So sad they're not continuing brunch because I loved that menu.

My husband made us reservations for my birthday. Our waiter Esahn and the rest of the staff made it such an incredible birthday to remember. Exceptional service and delicious food! I was extremely grateful for the birthday card signed by the staff and complimentary ice cream desert. I will definitely be returning to HSL and supporting such a gem in SLC.

I have never had a bad experience here! Their food is amazing and unique everytime I go. They change a lot of their menu monthly so keep that in mind if you find a favorite it may not be there later. It's upscale and a great place for lunch or dinner.
Handicap accessible and street parking.
Jackson Viscomi
Great food, great atmosphere.
I would give this 5 stars, but our experience felt a little rushed.
We ordered 4 small plates all at once and asked that they were well spaced (in typical tapas fashion, which our waitress was very receptive to). However, less than 15 minutes later, we had all 4 plates on our table and it began to feel like a race against time.
We’ll be back, but I’ll make sure not to make that mistake again.

My boyfriend and I came here for Valentine’s Day, and we loved it!! Each course we had was great, and the staff was lovely!
Zach P
Atmosphere was great, food was great, they messed up my friends order and gave him the burger instead of the New York. Took 30 to 45 minutes and to get our checks and the checks were all wrong. After two revisions I ended up just having to pay for several items that weren’t mine because our server didn’t seem willing to fix it for me. There were only four checks at the table total. Also parking isn’t ideal. If you are going to eat here either plan on paying for the whole table or order a couple drinks while you are waiting for your check.

It's my second time here and I always enjoy it! This time the ny steak was great, as well as the gin cocktail! My go to when in SLC.
Leonid Levin
Amazing athmosphere. Top of the notch service and food are beyond the expectation!
MS
Food is very good. Atmosphere, music, style is all very inviting and comfortable. That said, we waited an hour for our food. Also BEWARE of the "Walk-Ins Welcome!" sign out front. My party of four "walked-in", asked for dinner for 4 and the hostess said "no reservations? I don't have any tables for you." We did get seated at a large communal table (which was fine) - but it was still a mixed message.
Evan Espinel
Food was incredible! They had vegan options that were top notch (I recommend the cauliflower) and even better drinks! The service was great and really friendly. I was a bit surprised when I saw the prices but when we were done with our meal, I had no problem paying and leaving a generous tip. I'd grab a reservation next time but the communal and lounge areas were very accommodating.
Dave
Food was SOHO quality. Flavor journey on each plate. Go and share a few plates to experience more. Definitely a return location on my map.

Hands down best restaurant in SLC. The dishes here could hold up in a giant like NYC or Chicago. The cauliflower, pork shank, fish were all standouts. Service is incredible, as if the people who work here are trained in hospitality. I see myself dining here in the near future again. Wholeheartedly recommend!
Maritza Marchand
Must go to restaurant if you are in town. Service was superb food was top notch and a very crafty bartender made the most creative and delicious drinks
Taylor Sparks
Great food. Interesting combinations of flavors.bfornexample, the blistered peppers had a blackberry sesame mustard garnish that was fantastic. The entrees were wonderful. Our party had steak, the burger, curry shellfish and salmon. All terrific. I didn't love the endives as a side, but the mushrooms with the salmon were phenomenal. Great deserts too. A bit pricy, but a fun upscale night night out for foodies.
Jen S
We got the market green toast, the kona kampachi crudo and the new york steak. The only thing that was interesting was the market green toast. Serving size was decent of 4 slices (although it was $16) and it was different and delicious. The Kona was 2 large bites which was extremely disappointing, and the taste/flavor was nothing special. The steak was a typical new york steak, again, nothing special. The greens that came with the steak, were amazing. Atmosphere was fine and staff was friendly.
Emerson Fry
Might be our new favorite place. The decor, ambience, and music are wonderful, chairs are super comfy, and the food is second to none. My absolute favorite is the chocolate torte; if there was ever a perfect dessert this is it.
Camila Gonzalez
Atmosphere and service was great. I had the steak which was good but didn’t love the brussel sprouts
Shelly
Great food, cocktails, and service! One of the best restaurants in SLC.
Florence Sparks
All sorts of good foods and flavors to try. Worth checking out for sure!
Merrill Nielson
There is a lot of exceptional food here, make sure you try the General Tso’s Cauliflower appetizer, it’s exceptional. This is maybe my favorite restaurant in Salt Lake as far as all around consistency mixed with just great items on the menu. They have some great cocktails as well. It’s always a joy to come here.
Jason Zion
This was one of the biggest surprise meals i have ever had. It started with Erickson, our incredible server. He was very welcoming, knowledgeable, and passionate about the menu. He offered great suggestions, described the tires of flavors of the food, typical portion sizes, etc. He even let us know we could make modifications to drinks or meals.
Our cocktails were incredible, but i will warn that the taste was not overpowered by the alcohol. My party tried the mezcal, scotch, and vodka drinks. I modified my scotch drink to include Laphroaig to get that smoky flavor and it was excellent.
We started with the Hamachi, sourdough toast, cauliflower, and the shishito peppers. Every item had a unique flavor, the cauliflower stood out and was the table favorite. It was crispy on the outside and side on the inside, with a light, flavorful sauce.
We tried 5 different mains. I got the pork shank and it was incredible. The Frank's sauce had a good luck to it but was still sweet and glazed over. The bones fell right off and the pork was tender and juicy. I got to try the fried chicken as well and it was also juicy. The breading was crispy and not too salty.
We got several desserts but the caramel pudding stood out as the favorite. We got 3 desserts for 5 people and it was a great way to end the night. Not sure when i will be back in Salt Lake but this place will definitely be visited again!
Rebecca Woolston
Loved loved our experience! The ambiance was excellent, our waiter was great, and the food was incredible.
I loved everything but the fried chicken was a lot of chicken and not quite my fave. Everything else was amazingly balanced and had such interesting flavors. Will be back!
Corey Gary
Amazing meal! Very well done and high class. The bbq pork was out of this world. Cocktails were great as well. Super impressed. Also, great vibe regarding the music! Super alternative.
Isabel S
Very good, every dish we ordered is amazing. Service is good as well~ bone marrow is my favorite :)
BRIAN WICKERSHAM
Was not very impressed with the food. Over priced in my opinion for what it is.
Rebecca Cunha
First time at HSL. Great atmosphere, great staff. Ordered dirty martinis, warm olives, meat and cheese platter and the scallop tostadas.... everything was delicious!!!!
Kaati Tarr
I can’t believe I’ve never left a review for HSL before now! Whenever we have guests in town or a special celebration, this is our place. The food and service is always stellar, last night was no exception. Our friends had never been to HSL so we ordered all the things.
The roasted cauliflower is not to be missed! Pickled carrots were perfect, delicious combo of flavor and crunch. The flatbread was a crowd pleaser, get this if you’re with a group. The hamachi crudo is always amazing! One of my favorite things about this restaurant is that the menu changes depending on what’s in season but the standards remain. Our top picks are always the pork shank and the fried chicken. Last night we also loved the NY steak (artichoke and horseradish crema was outstanding!
Constance Steele
The first thing I noticed was how friendly and accommodating the staff was. When I travel I have some gear with me and they were more than helpful in storing it while I ate. The server was kind enough to give us her recommendations, which we ended up going with on all of them. For cocktail hour, I had the gin. Not much of a description on the menu of what it was and I know Utah is strictly on their alcohol laws but this was a good one. As an appetizer I had the seed crackers which comes with a cream cheese mousse. They were, as described by our server, REALLY good. It was a new taste and experience and I'm glad for this. For main course I did the pork shank. It comes on the bone and it's so tender that it just flakes right off. Also the Franks red hot sauce was a nice flavor to it. It comes with an applause sort of glaze and some whipped ranch sauce that's amazing. The salad was a bit pedantic.
Lynn Fernandes
Love vibe and the food is ridiculously delicious. We ate the bar and everything we ordered was so good. All I have to say is Buttermilk Biscuit!!! Order it - you won’t regret it.
Bailey Miller
Great food, very accommodating with a member of our group with strict dietary restrictions. The glazed pork shank was almost too good.
Craig Ashford
The atmosphere was calm and cozy, and the food was pretty good. The general tso's cauliflower was delicious! I could have eaten nothing else there and walked away happy. The meat and cheese board was decent, but I've had better elsewhere. I had the burger and fries. The burger was perfectly cooked and tasty, with just the right combination of moist center with a little char on the outside. Even though the the other flavors on the burger weren't inspiring, it was a good, standard flavor. My wife had the "market fish" entree and didn't like the fatty taste of the fish.
Jared Jensen
Amazing atmosphere. We had the burger and pork - both were awesome. Staff was friendly and things were reasonably priced. Headed back for sure.
Skye Willard
The ambiance of HSL is god tier. The inside is styled like a luxury Wes Anderson film. The staff are amazing and the vibes are just stellar.
The food itself is really great. It blends a lot of different influences but overall I would say it is contemporary. The drinks are insane as well.
You will enjoy HSL.
Amanda Doringcott
Great suggestions from staffs Gluten free options available. Delicious food!
Joseph Quillen
Cool place with a great aesthetic and energy. Service was friendly, simple, and efficient. Pork shank and salmon were both nice. Lovely chocolate torte and coffee ice cream. Can't wait to return to try a few more things.
Kimberly Mosby
Amazing food and service! I’ve literally never tasted anything like it...simply delicious! My mom suggested it for dinner. We started out with the sourdough toast. I had the fried chicken, and she had the sea bass special. I can’t remember the name of the dessert, but it had chips, caramel and pecans.....another perfectly balanced dish. I’ll definitely be going back!
Terry N
Love this place! Menu is small and changes weekly but the chef knows how to perfect the dish. Usually hubby and I and a couple friends likes to dine out once a month trying new places, and this is one of our favorite places to go in between the new restaurants. One summer they had this delicious crusted fish in a green creamy sauce. We usually get Cauliflower as an appetizer, which doesn't taste like vegetables at all! and pork shank is one of their staple menu items. Its delicious! plus ever changing dessert menu. Try them. It is on the maybe $30/per plate but well worth a date night!
Christopher Heilman
An excellent dining experience for a special occasion. The food was excellent and the service was above average. It loses one star just because it lacks that extra something to make you want to go over and over at that price point. My wife and I regularly go out for expensive meals, but have not craved returning. The cauliflower appetizer is probably one of the best vegetarian dishes I've had, and if you haven't been you should definitely try it at least once.
Dori Knight
Honestly one of the absolute best restaurants in SLC. You'll be impressed by the versatility of the menu, quality of the ingredients and creative ways they're used, atmosphere and ambiance, and the helpful staff. I regularly schedule work related dinners here, bring out of town friends and family here, and definitely enjoy nights out with friends here, too. You can never go wrong with the chicories and broccolini salad, the cauliflower, and the pork shank. If you're vegan, they're beyond accommodating with tweaking the dishes, too.
Edwin Solorzano

This place offers a good variety of high end plates, I've tried their steak, chicken and fish of the day and I have not being disappointed.
My recommendation is to try their cauliflower, and their biscuit, I always get them as an appetizer.
The main course my favorite is the fish of the day and I am aware Utah is a landlock state and I don't know how they do it but the fish has always been fresh.
Lastly the service is extraordinary ALWAYS, I come here for to celebrate B-day and their staff always do their best to make this type of celebration extra especial.
I love supporting local business and this is one where I am happy to continue to do so.
P.S Great selection big Wine, spirits
Matt Urick
Absolutely blown away! My wife and I both decided that HSL is the best restaurant we've ever eaten at. It felt like every dish we ordered was the best tasting thing we've ever had. We started with the cauliflower and the Hamachi Tataki, both of which were absolutely bursting with incredible flavor! Then for our entrees my wife ordered the pork shank and I had the pork belly from their limited menu and it was like butter! We were celebrating my wife's birthday and the staff all signed a card as well as sent out a free dessert! Our server (Chloe) was fantastic! She was kind, outgoing, and very conversational. She was also very aware and took excellent care of us! All in all our experience was a 10 out of 10! We can't wait to go back!
Brendon Beebe
This place was amazing. We live in Utah county and Googled fun places to eat in SLC and this didn't disappoint. We had the fried chicken and the Burger. We split each in half. The Fried Chicken was paired with a delicious salad. The Burger was cooked medium rare and couldn't have been more perfect. It was crisp on the outside and moist in the middle. The beat salad it was topped with was pretty sweet and went well with it.
Amber
Wonderful tastes and good service. Portions on some menu items were perfect and others woefully small.
Went with family and had burger, steak, pork and preach salad. Don't order salad hoping for a meal, stupid order in my part, I was starving even with eating party if two appetizers.
Prices are high but this is a high scale place with their food and atmosphere. Worth a try but expect to spend allot with the average cost of dinner at $30 and appetizers $14+.
Stephen Hunsaker
Wow, this is one of the best restaurants in Utah. If you read no further just know you MUST buy the cauliflower (general tsao) it is the most amazing Chinese flavored food I think I’ve ever had. Like I could write volumes about how good it was. The fried chicken and Bucatini were utterly phenomenal. And to top it off the whiskey caramel pudding is just hahaha amazing. I can’t praise this place enough. Just go.
A. Nakamura
As always, fantastic drinks, the food is always fresh and creative. Loved our server.
Alasteir Denton
I've had fried chicken many times and hands down this is the best! What was done with the natural flavors of the food was beyond amazing. I've eaten at Mary Mac's in Georgia and this was better! My friend had the Ny Steak and it was perfect. The cocktails are tailored to compliment the food.I can't say enough about our experience here and I encourage everyone to stop by!
Jacob Curtis
Easily one of the best meals in SLC. All of the appetizers are amazing (the apple toast in particular) and the fried chicken is a phenomenal entree. I haven’t had a dish here that wasn’t superb. I cannot recommend HSL highly enough.
Nhung Ho
Great place for brunch. We were surprised at how low key it was as there was no wait and the restaurant itself was fairly empty. We sat outside on the patio and had a really great time. The brisket hash with duck eggs was fantastic, as was the French toast. I was not a big fan of the fried chicken salad as the chicken was very salty, however I'm not docking HSL for it because it might just be me. Everything else was fantastic and you'd be remiss to not visit here for brunch.
Tristan
Always a top notch experience. Everything from the tableware to the bathrooms is well thought out functionally and aesthetically. Great recommendations from knowledgeable servers and sommeliers. They introduced me to my first Beaujolais years ago and it’s been one of my favorites ever since
Sara Vester
I came in with a large group. We ordered several different appetizers and all were delicious. The wine and beer selection was impressive. Everyone was happy with their entrees. We ordered coffee with dessert and I thought it was a nice touch that it came out in French presses.
This is a great place to come in and have an experience, not just eat. It also isn't a place to rush through your meal. I don't recommend if you're in a hurry or have kids with you.
Andrew Method
Great food, awesome service, and they have a great outdoor dining area for the pandemic. Their menu changes frequently, but I highly recommend the fried cauliflower and the mushroom bolognese flatbread. Our waiter was incredibly nice and helped us pick a great wine to go with the food we ordered.
Darren Pinney
Had the grilled broccoli, cauliflower, and pork loin. All the food was amazing, and the flavors and textures they were able to put in the dishes were phenomenal. Would definitely return. Service was good, waiter was friendly and polite. Sparkling water was $8 for a bottle, skip it.
Rob LeCheminant
The food here is incredible. We came with friends not knowing if they had vegan options for my wife and I, but they have a great amount to choose from (thank you!). The kale salad was excellent and I think I'll be dreaming about the cauliflower tonight.
John Wetzel
Home-y feeling with great service. I love that they suggest and encourage sharing of dishes.
Would recommend:
- General Tso's Cauliflower
- Pork Shank
Carson Ward
Good unique food. The place is pretty hipster with a few too many tables, but don't let that bother you. As everyone's said, General Tso's Cauliflower is fantastic. The steak was good and done exactly as I requested it. I'd order sauce on the side.
Alex Hollenbeck
Delicious, well crafted American food. We had shishitos, cauliflower, steak, and pork shank. All were wonderful, especially the cauliflower. Cocktails were lovely too.
Dylan Walker
This has to be one of the best places I've eaten in SLC. Do yourself a favor and try them out. I ordered the steak dish and my partner ordered the fried chicken. Both were amazing! My friend ordered the cauliflower dish and it was the best out of everything we tried while there.
Alexis Juergens
This is one of my favorite restaurants in SLC. The ambience is very inviting and it is a great place to go with friends. It is hard to pick from all of their tapas but thats why I would recommend going with at least 4 people so you can get a good sampling of everything. Honestly whatever you get will be unbelievable.
Hebberly Ahatlan
Despite the great food presentation, the flavors were lacking zest. Some dishes were a bit overcooked and some were a bit too salty. The only highlights were the salad and the virgin cocktails.
I think this place is good for a date if you don't mind the food being just slightly above average.
Our service waitress was superb - Agnes. She went above and beyond with all her guests.
Angie P
The General Tsos cauliflower is really good. Very flavorful. The cracker appetizer was really small (~5 crackers) and overrated. I ordered the steak entree and it came cooked exactly the way I ordered. The portions here are individually sized and definitely run a bit on the small side.
ohmyheck31
This has been one of our favorite restaurants for a couple of years, but tonight was just okay. For one thing, there are lots of repeated items on the menu that we've seen for 6 months. They were good, but with a very limited menu already, we want to try new things. Tonight, we had Roasted Beets (our favorite dish of the evening,) Roasted Cabbage with a pimento sauce (quite good,) and Grain and Seed Risotto with wild mushrooms. The last was $22 and a large serving but just okay.
David Cummock
Ordered:
HSL burger- interesting take on a burger. For me, it was a little too wild for a burger and I prefer more classic American flavors with good quality ingredients
Fried chicken- flavorful, tender, and delicious. I preferred this dish to the burger!
Cauliflower- fantastic dish. Tasted like a sweet and sour chicken dish, but with cauliflower instead. Crispy, sweet outside and perfectly cooked on the inside.
Honey cake- delicious!
Mousse - good, but not my favorite
Kara White
Amazing food and service with an approachable culinary experience that brought new flavor combinations without being too out there. Beautiful restaurant with good ambience, but too loud for comfortable conversation at the dinner table. Not a friendly place for children of any age - no booster seat or high chair available. Was very hot and stuffy inside... Maybe no air conditioning?? I would return for a special occasion or recommend to friends for their business meetings.
Kipp Baken
We had a group of six here after Christmas and loved this place. Everyone had marvelous, creative cocktails, sumptuous meals and desserts, and we loved the setting - although lively, we could all talk easily. The server was inobtrusive but very animated when we needed him. Highly recommend.
Naresh Kumar
Quality is the name of the game here. Fresh and flavorful dishes and tapas sourced locally with a variety of tasty beverages and desserts to complement. Comfortable and stylish decor. Engaging and fun wait staff offering top notch service - Jamison took care of our table. Not the cheapest night out, but excellent value for the experience that will leave you feeling good about choosing HSL.
Mark Lee Earl
Ordered from the starter and hot/cold menu, interesting and lively flavor combinations. The cauliflower, and the meat and cheese dishes are divine. Reservations recommended for this busy hot spot. Staff was attentive without hovering. Their in-house tonic is tremendously yummy. Street parking available.
Kim Payne
I got the Pork Flank and found that the green apple and apple butter very nicely complimented the whipped ranch and red hot pork. The Pork wasn't too spicy and thankfully not dry either. Super flaky! Will definitely be back for more Cauliflower and perhaps to try something else on the menu :)
Samantha Ray
To be frank, it was just alright. It wasn't horrible, I think most people would actually like it, but it didn't stand up to my expectations. We ordered the fried chicken and I was incredibly underwhelmed, it was a bit chewy and the crust slipped right off the chicken breast. We also got the fennel and pork on toast. The flavor was better than the chicken, but still seemed like it was trying too hard and couldn't quite come together.
whil mccutchan
The beef cheek burger and herb fried chicken were VERY good. Cocktails were solid and the room and table were great. Finished it off with chocolate cake that was wonderful! It's a little pricy, but for sure worth every penny.
Eugene Lacle
Great business dinner and service & culinary was ourstanding. Loved the Salmon! Very tender and delicious!
Terry Abbott
This is me and my wife's favorite spot. As always, great food, great service, and amazing drinks. The Old Fashions are very smooth and a good go to. I recommend their burger with tomato jam. Bar tender is quick and thorough. Makes a mean beverage.
Scott Gillman
HSL has been hit or miss for us. Some times it's phenomenal and others we get served cold food with smaller portions than usual. The atmosphere is great and they have great drink options. Just wish there were more consistency with the food.
Brandon King
We fully enjoyed our meal. It was a great experience.
Sandee Spackman
Good, but rather overpriced for ingredients. I didn't care for the breading on the chicken. The black curried rice was excellent.
Sam Solomon
Seems like their brunch is severely underrated, we went there at 10:30 on a Sunday and the large inside was pretty much empty (though all of the outdoor tables were filled, since it was a nice day).
The two of us over-ordered but it was worth it to be able to try 3 things: the Cinnamon Bun, the HSL Benedict, and the Tostada. All were pretty outstanding (though my favorite was the Tostada).
The only slight downsides were: the lemonade I got was quite sour for my taste, and the coffee was on the thick side for my girlfriend's palate as well.
Rebecca Rougeau
Arrived at 5:05 and I was the 1st person there on a Friday. Everything I read led me to believe it was packed all of the time, but when I left around 6 there were only 3 or so tables occupied. Sat at the bar and had a drink and the renowned General Tsos Cauliflower, which were very delicious and also tied for the 3rd most delicious thing I ate tonight. Servers are attentive and helpful, really a pleasure to interact with. I very much enjoyed my visit and I probably will never return.
Rebecca Forrette
Absolutely incredible food. The beef cheek burger was the best burger I've ever had. My husband got the scallops and really enjoyed them. The desserts are divine as well. Definitely a must visit place!
Courtnie Clemens
This was a 5 star experience with one exception. We absolutely adored our waiter, Erickson! He made our dining experience seamless. I was able to easily reserve a time through yelp, and they seated us promptly at our reservation. I loved all the food we ordered. The seeded cracker with pepper jelly was unique, honestly I’ve never had a good pepper jelly until today. The shishito peppers were fabulous, the curry sauce really made the dish. The scallops in the scallop tostadas were perfection! Last but not least the presentation on the beet salad was very impressive, unlike any I have had before (which is a lot because I love beets). The Prosecco and Pinot Gris were also crisp and refreshing for the summer night. Unfortunately the flatbread came out without any burrata so we told our waiter who promptly acknowledged the issue and sent in for a new flatbread. There may have been a mixup due to the pappardelle request for no cheese which is understandable. The manager delivered the new flatbread and stated that the previous one did have the burrata but just a small amount, essentially trying to make us feel bad or call us liars. Poorly handled from a management perspective but well handled by our waiter. They should retrain that manager or just promote Erickson who has a grasp on customer service.
Jacob Williams
Great service, very friendly staff, and amazing desserts.
For our entrees we had the "New York" which was cooked perfectly and was flavorful, and the Pork Shank, which while good was maybe a little overhyped. To me, Frank's red hot is something you put on cheap food to give it flavor.. so I was not able to enjoy the pork flavor as much sinc the Frank's was overwhelming. Still, I would eat it again. Though I would order the New York again before going for the pork.
Desserts were aggressively delicious... We had the whiskey caramel pudding which I would eat until I died or ran out - whatever comes first. Second dessert was a lemon ricotta something or other which was delicious as well.
Highly recommend this place, but do yourself a favor and make a reservation.
joachim guanzon
Good food, friendly staff. What more can you ask?
Brian Goodwin
Fantastic food, quick and accommodating service. Originally was gong to order the cauliflower, but after deciding I needed a larger portion I ordered the sort rib hash instead. The waitress thought I wanted them both by mistake and brought them out. After finding out I didnt want them both she wouldnt charge me for them.... customer service and kindness goes a long way and I'll be coming back! Both dishes were fab!
Heidi King
This restaurant is a cozy little eatery with a fun spread of meal choices. I recommend making a reservation and be sure to tell the waiter if this is your first time. They’re helpful in explaining how the menu works and what dishes are most popular. The food was fantastic and I’ll be returning 🙌🏻 …
Todd Smith
Great food, great atmosphere, and unbelievably friendly and efficient service made our first visit to HSL one for the memory books! We WILL be back!
Boyd Douglas
I got the market fish which happened to be a trout. The fish was the melt in your mouth type yet seared on the outside. It was served with sautéd mushrooms and a side of something weird I didn't love. My friend got the fried chicken. My favorite part was the side of potatoes with a balsamic vinagrete glaze. Truth be told, I liked the fish but I loved the chicken.
Matthew Petersen
Great ambiance with fresh, unique, locally-sourced menu. Service was efficient but lacked the friendliness of other Salt Lake City restaurants of similar caliber. Drinks are excellent and reasonably priced. Great for an intimate dinner or a large group! Not great for children or picky eaters.
Kris Carson
Absolutely delicious food at this restaurant. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection and my husband’s steak was sooo good. But a restaurant can’t survive on great food alone. 😜 The ambiance was beautiful with very nice comfortable chairs. Our server, Ehson, was so professional but he was also friendly and a very interesting person. It was lots of fun getting to know him. If the food would have been less delicious I will still return over and over because of Ehson. I will certainly ask for him the next time.
Luke Fowles
I have cooked in Michelin restaurants for years from tasting menu's to simple fast casual. Service is really good, they know the ingredients the stories behind them and explain every dish with detail. I will say the food is just ok for fine dining. The garde mager dishes were mostly great but seasoning and acid was off on many items from purees to entire dishes. For instance i dont think there was a single grain of salt and almost no acid on the pea salad with pepper puree, bland, not explosive flavors, relatively blah. The beet salad was mostly good but once again not seasoned well enough. The play on civiche with ponzu and pickled pineapple was the best dish of the night. Very bright, seasoned perfectly and was interesting and done well. Now for the entrees, the pork shank was executed very well but the shaved vegetables that of course are put there to make the novice diner feel its "fine dining plated" was not seasoned once again with no acid no salt thank god for the whipped ranch to put on it. Although kinda whitty play on buffalo wings with ranch and celery sticks put into an entree. The fried chicken was the worst fried chicken ever. Like really 30$ for chicken that has no seasoning, drier then hell and the coating was overly carmelized and tasted borderline burnt. Whoever cooked the chicken you really need to pay attention the fry temp and length and watch it close because it was really sad, also some salt or brine would really really help. The desserts were amazing. All in all it was a good experience but if you guys are gonna charge those kind of prices your execution and seasoning better be dead on and it was not. Start focusing on the basic details, taste every single time before you plate and then you guys will be at the highest level in utah.
Josh Clark
General Tso cauliflower was overly saucy with a stronger flavor than what would be found at Pei Wei or Panda Express. Fried chicken was cooked very well and the breading was just right but the flavor left much to be desired as it was on the saltier side and no other discernable seasoning. Passable at $10 but couldn't recommend at $28. Staff provided exemplary service and the atmosphere was great, just not a fan of the food.
Melissa Walls
Service and food was excellent. We tried the broccolini salad and biscuit to start, and they were so good. The salmon was one of the best salmon dishes I’ve ever had and definitely the most unique.
Evan Jackson
Beautiful restaurant with friendly service and great atmosphere. I will definitely go here again however, I'll be a little more selective in what I order. The pappardelle pasta was absolutely delicious however the pork shank lacked freshness and tasted as if it was cooked beforehand then finished off in the oven immediately prior to serving.
Paul Kuc
Modern place, great for dinner for two or a group of friends planning a startup. Cauliflower lived up to its legendary reputation and pork shank is amazing. Presentation is great, staff is friendly and efficient.
Andrea Derler
Absolutely amazing food. The red cabbage patties and the fried cauliflower were outstanding, so was the burger. Cool place to hang out with friends or romantic partner. Loved it.
Anna Mellor
The ambience, the staff, the food! The fried chicken is to die for & the Orange chicken dupe cauliflower (can’t remember the actual name of it on the menu) is better than actual orange chicken. Their wine recommendation was delicious, my friends & I all tried each other’s food & it was all good!
Amy Rich
Not sure what HSL stands for, but my guess is "Heaven in Salt Lake"! Foodie heaven, that is. We came with no reservations on a Saturday night and they were swamped, but still very happy to see us. $$$ - small plates are creative, gorgeous, adventurous, and above all, delicious! European feel - cozy and elegant, yet hip and fun. Stay for 2-3 hours and share small plates with friends. Our server, Chris, was superb. He knew the menu inside and out and was very helpful. Three drinks and 5 plates for $100. We left very satisfied, instead of miserably overstuffed. Favorites are hard to choose, but I would recommend the cauliflower, lavash, and for dessert... the creameux!!!

Average food, halibut was dry. I feel like the small plate thing is a windfall for the new hip restaurants at this time, hopefully the trend will slow to a stop in the future. The quality/taste of food and slow service is nothing close to zaget quality. The presentation was very good however. Genuine review, not a friend/family
David M
Incredible general tsao cauliflower but everything else was mediocre or worse. Steak was basic, unseasoned, and served less than warm, shishito peppers were coated in 19x too much oil and were hard to eat, scotch cocktail was large but boring. Spinach was overcooked to the point of almost disappearing before it got to us. The atmosphere is charming so it might be a good spot to get a bottle of still water and a few drinks, but the restaurant experience was three stars if I'm being kind for a bill over $150 for two people.
Mike Knudtsen
Great food and ambiance. Only knock would be the beer selection, was hoping for more local beers, but wine list was good. All courses were very good, and while I realize this is specific to me, the music they have playing eerily matched what is in my music library :)

Me and my wife decided to try this place visiting SLC from out of town. The restaurant itself is quite nice, the seats are comfortable, albiet a bit of a maze to move through.
The good: The cauliflower and the pork shank were both delicious. Pork shank with buffalo sauce was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
The ok: The sourdough appitizer. This dish struck me as a chef trying to hard to make something look fancy. I'm all for making a statement with presentation, but when you pile bread pieces with picked onion it just ends up being a lump of soggy bread. It's a shame because the honey, cheese and nuts were fabulous on the tiny bit of bread that stayed crispy.
The bad: The fried chicken and the drinks. I don't know if we got a bad piece, but the chicken we got was almost inedibly dry. We had the mezcal and the vodka mixed drinks, both of which tasted like they had been left in the ice shaker too long (watered down).
Overall it was not a bad dinner, the goods generally outweighed the bads. When priced as a fine dining restaurant though, I would expect more consistency on what I would hope were some one off misses.
Francisco Chavarria
Pros: Trendy cool spot with a young vibe and cool atmosphere. Food selection is limited yet above average quality.
Cons: Awful awful service from hostess/front personnel. It was our first time and was expecting a lot better. Definitely needs to improve and match it with today's expectations.
Better places to choose from but if you've had all SLC has to offer, I'd give it a try.
Kay Tomlinson
Food is great. Themenu is comprised of appetizers, hot, cold, and main courses. With a party of 4 adults we had 1 app, 2 hot items, 1 cold item, and 1 main course with no leftovers. Although the menu changes frequently, we loved the HSL sourdough app, the general tsao cauliflower, and the beet salad. I also liked my pok pok soda. We would all definitely return to this restaurant!

After a long day at the track in Tooele, my husband and I decided to have a fun date night in SLC. I will be honest and say that we initially were planning to go to some other, better rated restaurant, but I am 100% certain that we lucked out by hitting up HSL!
The moment we turned into their lot we noticed a quaint charm about the restaurant. As we walked along the side of the restaurant we were taken even more by the beautiful air plants in the window. The outside seating looked comfortable, but the air conditioned dining area called out to us. We were sat along the back wall and warmly greeted by our server, Adam. To say that Adam made us feel welcome is an understatement. He was bubbly, fun, and had an easy way about him that created and comfortable and enjoyable dialogue throughout our dining experience.
We ordered the Cauliflower (highly suggest it if you like a little spice), Crab tostadas, Flat Iron Steak, and Pork. Each dish was artfully and carefully prepared and presented beautifully! The cauliflower was perfectly cooked with incredible flavors that felt like an explosion of amazing in my mouth. The soft shelled crab was delicious and paired creatively with pickled veggies and delicious hard tortillas. The flat iron steak was cooked medium-rare, rare which is exactly the way we like it. The meat melted away in our mouths and was packed with incredible flavors. Lastly, the pork - OMG, the PORK! - literally fell off the bone and tasted like a mix between bacon and carmel apples. So delicious. We had such a great experience with our meal that we decided to get some dessert, and we were NOT disappointed at all!!! We enjoyed the rice pudding ice cream sandwich (I highly recommend you try this), the carmel pudding (sooooooo good and really heavy), and the two ice creams of the night (extra virgen olive oil and white chocolate cherry). All in all, if you are looking for an amazing restaurant in the SLC area HSL is an absolute MUST!!
Thanks for the memories HSL team!

Always new seeming servers that still act like they're training but making mistakes or walking away too quickly. Maybe something is wrong with management, turn over seems high, and servers seem stressed. Drinks are great. Entrees are almost worth the price but apps could use a revamp for the hefty pricetag. Why $17 for califlower? (even though it's delicious) Love the food and decor, but something is wrong, no personable service.
Brian Spoelhof
I would say it was okay. It seed that they had an off night. Delays in getting food. Taking our silverware and replacing it. Also they never told is our bill had been taken care of while we were waiting for 20 or so minutes (we were there with a business with payment on file.)
All that being said the food was absolutely amazing. Great general tso cauliflower.
Courtney
I wasn't impressed with the food. I didn't feel like the value was there. It was reaching for a certain level and just didn't quite make the mark. There are definitely more reasonably priced places nearby with better tasting food. It didn't help that we were ignored by the hostess for several minutes when we first came in. She was standing right in front of us with her head down on her tablet and didn't even acknowledge our existence there.
S Jen
This was my first time here and when I walked in I thought the place was closed. I quickly asked the hostess if they were open and she said yes. Apparently not many people come on a Thursday around 2pm (which is kind of nice)...so we got a great seat. Thinking our waiter would be super "on top of it" being that we were his only table, but his attitude was more laid back. We ordered the Safritas, which I highly recommend, to start and then ordered the HSL burger and Salmon Eggs Benedict. The Safritas made the whole experience. The eggs Benedict were extremely fishy and the HSL burger had a house made cheese on it that was just waaaaaay too "cheddary" for my taste. I ended up taking the cheese off. All in all we paid around 70$ for brunch/lunch and are not quite sure if we'd come back.
lori james
I got a burger and fries and it did not disappoint. The fries have the best flavor!! I have no idea what they do to them but there is some sort of lime seasoning that will make your mouth gasm. Yummmmmmm
The ambiance is great and the staff is so friendly! Parking can be tricky but not horrible. Would go back!
Beverly Goddard
Best meal I've ever had! There were four of us and we ordered numerous items and there is nothing we wouldn't recommend. Bring friends, share multiple items and you won't be disappointed. In addition to great service, the bartender was fun to watch.
Dustin E. “DirRtE” Holt
The cauliflower is an absolute must!! The HSL burger is fantastic, as is the chicken. Oh, and the salmon hits the spot when looking for something a little lighter! Delicious!!
Jenn Thompson
Delicious! The food was gorgeous and so delicious, wonderfully innovative menu. Will go back
Jason Yu
Food and service were excellent. The risotto was some of the best I’ve had. Prices are on the high side but worth it in my opinion.
Stephanie Potter
My 4 friends and I chose this restaurant carefully to celebrate our collective birthdays. Unfortunately our Uber driver got us there late to our reservation. We called and they said as long as we came in before 10pm, they would still serve us. We scrambled through the door at 10:01pm. We explained the situation and that the person we spoke to indicated we could sit if it was before 10, to which the man at the door replied "well it's 10:01." We were flabbergasted that this was his response, but the manager then swept in and said of course they would seat us. We felt relieved but uneasy, having not expected that type of "welcome", having already been frazzled by the debacle with our ride there. We were escorted to a beautiful table. The ambiance was warm and lovely. Meanwhile, the man who had greeted us with such disdain was assigned our table. We could feel his hostility as we began preparing for our meal. It was incredibly awkward. My friend cracked a joke to him to try to lighten the mood saying something along the lines of how we still liked him or at least hadn't yet decided that we didn't. He misinterpreted her comment, thinking she was underhandedly insulting him rather than joking with him. He confronted us saying something along the lines of how he "could still hear us, and why do people think it's ok to talk down to their servers?!?" I was completely taken aback. I was FURIOUS. My friend did not deserve such treatment and was only trying to lighten the mood as the atmosphere around him was so tense and thick it could be cut with a knife. Had I had my way, we would have left then and there. I'd rather have had a gas station hotdog at that point than give them my business. My friend was more kind in her reaction than I and opted to discuss the situation with the manager. We were assigned a new server and stayed. The night improved from there. The new server was not hostile towards us. The food was delightful, the atmosphere beautiful. We ordered 3 appetizers and they forgot one of them but we weren't charged. They served us ice cream in celebration of our birthdays which was lovely, but then they made a comment about how it was all they had because the kitchen was closed. It was yet another reminder that we were there too close to closing for them. Quite frankly, it felt like they would have preferred to not have our business, with the exception of the manager. I plan to NEVER go back. A beautiful night with my friends was marred by resentful treatment, and I don't feel I could ever enjoy eating there because of the prospect of having to deal with that server again. The food and treatment by the manager justified the experience as a 3 star "it was ok". Had we not been treated so terribly and made to feel like we were an inconvenience, it would have been a 5 star for sure. I talked myself up from a single star only because the manager was appreciative and the food really was good. With dozens of other restaurants of this nature to choose from, I will choose to give my business to those who do not make me feel like such an inconvenient hassle or make my kind, caring friend feel so attacked.
Naiomi Hinde
Great quality for the price. Agree with other folks that the portions aren't huge but for a lunch I thought they were just right. Brunches can go berserk on the home fries and toast so this was a really nice change.
Our server was friendly and happy to take questions.
Paul daniels
Good ambiance. Good food. But over priced. Eighteen dollars for a High West Double Rye is far too much.
Merril Longmore
This is a great restaurant if you want to sit and relax for the evening. The food was good and the presentations stunning. Very creative and great flavors. Waiting for the food to arrive was a little frustrating though. But we weren't in a hurry so it was fine.
F. F. (Francho)
Food was good, tasty and well presented. However, the service was lacking. Our server seemed very un-interested and things just took a very loooooong time. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate not being rushed but this was extreme. Unless you are planning on spending a good portion of your day there, you may want to try another place. As for me, I am not sure I want to repeat the experience.
Emily Miller
Love this place! The atmosphere is amazing, great drink options non alcoholic to alcoholic and their food is top notch. One of the few restaurants I would call Gourmet in the valley. Great change up from the typical chain restaurant for sure.
Spencer sk
It's American cuisine and the menu makes the dishes sound over the top simple, but their not! The flavor infusion at HSL is bound to surprise and delight you.
Steve Kenning
The food and service were absolutely unbelievable. The General Tso’s Chicken was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever had. And to top it off, a member of our party left something of value and someone on staff sprinted after us to deliver it. Go here. Just go.
Tim Jurasevich
The food was good but not great. If it was a bit cheaper I'd kick it up to four stars but I expected a bit more for the money. I wanted to try some fine dining in SLC after skiing and that brought me to HSL. The atmosphere was relaxed and cozy.
The duck liver mousse was the best of the four items I tried. The Manila clams, flatbread, and cochon were good didn't particularly stand out and felt like they were lacking something. They were not by any means bad but I just expected more from an allegedly well regarded fine dining place. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by living in the mid-Atlantic where there are a lot of great food options from around the world.
The wine menu was nice, probably the best of what I experienced in SLC.
Matthew Buse
One of best atmospheres you'll find in SLC! Food was amazing and a great selection of cocktails. There's too many good dishes to try so plan on sharing!
Maureen Makes
This is a great small plates place. We got 4 small dishes to share and dessert which was the right amount of food for the two of us. My favorite thing we are was the broccoli. The cocktails were also to die for.
Tracey M.
We're locals who really like this place. The foods amazing, service and atmosphere are great & their hours are good too since they stay open a little later on the weekends then most reataurants. They have lots of really delicious vegetarian options as well.
Rob Vampflern
Fantastic food, drinks and service. One of the few restaurants I've found with craft cocktails that are worth the price, and our group tried 2/3 of the dinner menu and loved every dish.
Evens Martin
Toast appetizer was delicious, the flavors were incredible. Pork Shank was amazing! Literally fell off the bones. Impeccable service and staff. Will be back!!
Elizabeth Leach
Very classy restaurant in SLC. Cocktails are delicious. Food is prepared very well. The spinach and kale salad was incredible. Scallops cooked perfectly. One of the best restaurants in SLC.
Tyler Clancy
Undoubtedly a 5 star experience. My girlfriend and I ordered things to share and she said it was her favorite dinner we have had together yet! We will be back for sure.
Sabrina Cowley
Nice quiet location in downtown area. Sampled the burger, pork sandwich and the cauliflower. Loved the pork and the cauliflower. The burger didn't have much flavor.
Casey Staker
Great vegan options, thank you! Great service also. Oh man. Vegan dessert was the best. Almond joy popsicle with cherry -rosé sorbet. Yuuuum!
Gabriel Espinos
I can’t recommend this restaurant enough, it is my favorite date spot and really shows the culinary advancements that Salt Lake City should be making
Joel Dunn
Best place I've been since my beloved Pallet closed. Great service. Non-pretentious. Amazing execution of flavor.
Anna Killian
Easily the best gourmet burger in Salt Lake! Every appetizer I've tried has been amazing and the atmosphere is cool but cozy. Love HSL
Aleah Lopes
Service was amazing, fast, and the food was so delicious. Absolutely will be telling friends about Nosh
Cameron Garber, DPT
So good! If you love real food with a huge variety of flavors, this place is for you! The cauliflower is amazing! We loved the flatbread too! HSL is a foodie's dream.
Heidi Martinez-Perkins
Really delicious cauliflower dish. And the pork shoulder was divine. My only complaint is it was a bit loud. Especially for a business type dinner meeting.
Jennifer Figueroa
Amazing place second time back every body's plate was good. Happy they did not take off the General Tsos cauliflower. People who do not Cauliflower tried and loved it!
Joey Alatorre
Love the friendly staff that is always informative without being pretentious and the food is consistently great. Also, you're in good hands with the bar staff!
Colleen English
Our server, Dorothy, was a true professional in every way. Babied the high end wine we brought, very knowledgeable about celiac, on top of everything and amazing food! Hands down a top choice in SLC.
Michael Neubert
Everything was delicious. The cold appetizer, entree and dessert!
Jason Glithero
Food was ok. Atmosphere was a little loud but tolerable. Would probably head back there on my next visit.
Don Jones
Fantastic flavor combinations. Salmon was a perfect sear. Had the mezcal margarita and the smokey after tone was amazing. You must have the general Tao cauliflower. To die for
A
Very cute and comfortable. The menu changes daily which is awesome. I hope they recycle. Sadly what I really wanted was the one entre they were sold out of. Parking could be difficult if it was any busier. Entre does not include any side items. I guess that's how they keep it fancy😜. Reciept came out face UP, but on a cute little board. Which was awkward on a first date. Or any date. Waiter was super friendly and attentive though.
Austin Chappell
Expensive and crowded.
But totally worth it.
I'd recommend the apple toast? Apple bread? It was an appetizer and it was fantastic.
I'd go back here but because of the price it's only once or twice per year.
Dylan Weber
Great vibe with tasty cocktails.
Brent Lemberg
I enjoyed the fried chicken and bevette steak. Both were delicious and filling. Took my food to go, so I can't comment on drinks or service.
Rob Harrison
Some times nice restaurants overthink stuff and Make things too fancy. That was this experience. Nothing was amazing just overdone.
Jeff Kurrus
General Tso cauliflower and the pork shank. I order them every time because both dishes are fabulous. Great service in a modern setting. My favorite restaurant in SLC.
Kelli Green
Delicious! The seasonal menus make it a new, scrumptious experience every time. One thing you can count on, is the food will not disappoint.
Amelia Blotter
So delicious. I don't even know how to describe the fried chicken... I will dream of it forever. 😍 I also recommend the cauliflower, burger, and fries. 😋 …
Michael Martin
The food and drinks were delicious. Our server was friendly and fun, and suggested great drinks!
Louis Murray
Superb! Everything was on the mark, a gold standard that other restaurants should aim for.
Jason Loucel
As odd as it seems the biscuit is totally worth it and the cauliflower was a delight. Great for sharing a variety of dishes, just get your own biscuit!
Sandra Larson

Kasey O'Killion

Lisa Nash
Cozy, upscale dining. Shareable plates. Delicious, homemade food with unique flavor combinations. Great service. Highly recommended!
Daniel Van Tassell
Food was good, above average but nothing amazing, but limited menu. Loud volume just based on the closeness of tables which I doubt changes much from night to night if the restaurant is full.
Madi Bingham
Loved the variety of choices and the variety of tastes to every bite. Overall, very tasteful. Wish their portions sizes on some of them were a bit larger.
Chad Tobin
A fantastic restaurant. Every meal we had was delicious. I thought prices were incredibly fair considering the high quality of the food we got for lunch.
Ron Williams
Excellent option for downtown Salt Lake. Handle runs another location in Park City. Solid brunch with farm to table seasonal options. Cocktails, accessible though parking can be tricky.
George Szyszko
