Everything was delicious! Staff was entertaining, professional, and knowledgeable about menu. Had yummy specials. Portions were huge and came timely. We (4 of us) loved everything we ate. Each thing better than the next. Red sangria was tasty, too. Would definitely go back and would definitely recommend!

Amazing Portuguese restaurant with a beautiful peaceful outdoor seating that has a wall fountain . I loved seating outside and the food is amazing as well . Everything from the cute waiter who helped us with bringing out my girlfriend’s birthday cake to bringing us everything in perfect order and the food is delicious no matter what you get on the menu . Definitely a restaurant in Newark you want to try out and probably will want to come back too. The chicken and shrimp dinner with artichoke’ and mushrooms in a wine sauce is out of this world & they give you gigantic portions . I ate in my leftovers 3 x ! Also the fish is good here too . I love the calamari & shrimp in garlic sauce. I use to only drink red sangria now this place had me at their white sangria . Its excellent and perfect taste to it .

The seafood is excellent, as is the waiter service. The portions are generous and the menu is reasonably priced for the quality of food that you get. If you love seafood this is the restaurant in Newark, New Jersey that you need to go to. Highly recommend!

I’m giving these guys 5 stars because I’ve never heard any waiter sing the Happy birthday song as passionate as this guy! We had my cousin’s birthday here. The food tasted amazing. Service was great with little wait time for the food. They also had amazing broa haha :) We had bacalhau, leitao, frango assado, steak, giant shrimp. All tasted amazing. My only regret is that we didn’t have dessert from the place because we brought the birthday cake from an outside place. But these guys were nice enough to hold it for us and bring it out in time with the candles. It wasn’t too noisy, so we were able to enjoy conversations and laughters. Their indoor seating is nice and spacious with a few rooms to dine in. They also have plenty of outdoor dining space. They also have parking! Thank you so much for your hospitality and for making my cousin’s birthday so memorable. We all had a great time.

The customer service is great. The food is good. The daily specials are great priced. I went at noon on a Wednesday and it was super busy. I ordered two Appetizers and could not finish them. Great experience over all.

Came to check in before heading out to the airport. The main front door doesn't work or better, it's locked with a piece of wood and no sign saying to use the side door. If it wasn't for a customer eating inside and pointing it out to go around. We would had broken the glass door from pulling it so hard.As for the service, could be better! The waiter didn't know a passion fruit juice. We ended up having something else. Even after that he had a sour attitude. Meanwhile, he kept checking on his big table next to us where a bunch of patrons (men) kept talking loud and cursing out in Portuguese. Disrespectful while having women eating there. As for the food, we had what they called Polvo à açoriana 🤔. That is new to me! Because I'm açoriana and i NEVER EVER had octopus with broccoli! It's not a vegetable that we grow or even care in the islands. The dish was tasty, could have a few more potato's, the octopus was tender but the outside could had been less slimy. The bread and olives were delicious! As for the service, there is more to wish for. His attitude was DO NOT CARE for these 2 people, didn't bothered checking on us or to offer another drink. Which it would had been ok. He still got a good tip bc the place was clean, the food wasn't that bad. Just his service was lacking!

Was treated to a night out by my nephews. While they have been going here for years this was my first time. Everything was wonderful. The sangria was delicious. We had appetizers of chorizo and a salami and cheese platter. Very nice. The menu is pretty extensive. I ordered the pork loin with clams. It came with boiled potatoes and broccoli. The portions are huge! I did take some home because I couldn't finish it all. One of my nephews had the shell steak and gave me a taste. It was like butter. So good and tender. Afterward we had coffee which was really good as well but too full to try dessert. I will definitely be back. (PS I did not get our servers name, but she was excellent!)

The place is big but from the outside you would never know. Staff is great, outside dining a HUGE plus, especially with the cascading fountain as the focal point. The food was tasty, a bit cold for me, but good. The drinks 🍸, piña colada & sangria get 5 🌟. All-in-all it's a fantastic place for a special event.

You can't go wrong by going to Newark for very good authentic Portuguese. There are so many of them. PortuCale is one of them. We went there for lunch and this restaurant and bar is a neighborhood favorite away from the many restaurants typically located on Ferry Street. They do have on site parking which, is great since street parking can be very challenging. When entering into the main entrance you will be in the bar with tables but, if you want you can request other rooms going from bar to formal, to casual to outside. Since it was raining we requested the casual away from the bar but, overlooking the outside. By the way the outside looks inviting with a waterfall, lighting, canopy, arborvitae, tables and flat screen television. Something we would try when weather permitting. We requested a pitcher of red sangria with little ice and made stronger than usual. We shared the Portucale Sampler. It is a sample of their most appetizers. It's served tapas style with grilled octopus in a garlic sauce, shrimp in garlic, roasted chorizo and roasted potatoes. This was a winner and easy serves 4-6. It's a meal alone for 2. The various breads made this appetizers taste even better. For our entree we had a choice of over 20 for the day. We chose the grilled pork loin with sauteed onions while I want barbecue baby back ribs. The pork loin was juicy and not overcooked. The onions gave it a nice touch with bread. The baby back ribs were moist and not tried with a nice charcoal char. Both entree were served with rice and fries. We barely finished our entrees since the appetizer was so filling. So it was brought home. The portions served are more than enough and you will bring it home. We finished with excellent cappuccino. We were served by waiters we knew who worked at other local Portuguese restaurants so it was nice to be remembered. We plan to go back again.

Very tasty and large portions, prices are not bad and food arrived onTime however on the downside , waiters (servers) were very to the point with little smile just very busy. Overall I would recommend just because the waitress at the front was very polite and she did smile.

This place is the real deal. Amazing service amazing food. Parking was super easy in there lot. The squid is a must have at this great restaurant. If you happen to be in Newark NJ , def stop by this place. The prices are great an the quality of food is just fabulous. Great job guys

I’m from Newark and have eaten at lots of Iberian restaurants in town. The food here stands up to the best of them. It’s also reasonably priced. Can't really tell it's a restaurant from the outside. But inside it is nice with cute outdoor seating. Food was delicious. Flavored well. Salmon steak had a nice sear with the right amount of salt crust outside. Tile steak very tender. Service was attentive.

My husband and I purchased a Groupon which was an amazing idea 💡 Our Groupon came with 1 appetizer 2 entrees and a small pitcher of sangria. They need a little help in the service area (all explain). We walked in and was seated immediately (by an open door in January) I asked if they could close the door because I was cold and the door was directly behind me. The server told us “no, just move”. When I repeated it back to him to ensure I heard him correctly he said well it’s gonna get hot if we close the door. Ok so we moved away from the door. Two more couples was seated 5 mins after we arrived. After he explained what our Groupon consisted of, we placed our order for the Wings and wasn’t given an option(red/white) for Sangria. We waited patiently. The other two couples who can in after we did and was seated after us, was given bread and their sangria (which was white). The server came back with red sangria and poured two glasses (no biggie). I noticed he wasn’t gonna bring us bread unless I asked so that I did. He brung it out immediately. It was ice cold with a side of butter. I asked if he could warm it up and that he did. While we waited for our entrees a group of 3 walked in and was seated. I noticed (because they was seated right beside us) that they received a specials menu. So I asked the server for one because we wasn’t given or even was offered any specials. Our meal was very delicious 😋. Once we were done we asked for the bill and he gave it to us but never offered us coffee or dessert (but gave the others a dessert menu) we kindly tip the guy (the Groupon paid for our meal) and left. Will I return? 🤔 maybe if I have another Groupon. Oh and by the way parking sucks .. the have a lot but it is extremely small (one way in one way out)

Pretty solid place, food quality and portions are excellent. The dessert menu is absolutely out of this world. Service could have been a tad bit better; getting water was slow and the napkins were scarce and inferior to handle all of that superior food.

This place serves a fantastic meal. Authenticity and taste are the main staples. The menu has tonnes of options of varied flavors, meats and fish. The food was cooked to perfection and garnished to not just taste but also look picturesque. To top it off the server Constantine was friendly, knowledgeable, expedient and accommodating and made great small talk and recommendations. I highly recommend to anyone looking to experience a bit of Portugal in Newark.

I had a flight mishap at EWR and ended up staying the night. I almost stayed at my hotel and had a Caesar salad, but because I love Portuguese food I took the bus for 13 minutes, walked for 6 minutes, and ended up eating an absolutely spectacular octopus salad (recommended by a friendly local) and having a glass of wine for like $20. This place is amazing. Little did I know when I felt frustrated by an air travel delay that I would be getting a free trip to Lisbon out of it. This place absolutely rocks. Next time I’m going to get stuck at EWR on purpose.

My wife and I ate at Portucale with a Groupon this past Saturday. Service was outstanding and the dining fare was exquisite. Eduardo and Ruben did a magnificent job taking care of our needs and suggesting the best meals, they were very polite and friendly. For appetizer we had the Portucale Sampler, it consist of Smoked Sausage, Shrimp, Octopus and potatoes. It was mouthwatering. The sausage had a slight smokey flavor, the shrimp was full of flavor, the octopus is the most tender octopus I've ever eaten. My wife had the Marisca Molho Verde (suggested by Eduardo), which consist of lobster, clams, muscles, scallops and shrimp in a scrumptious green sauce. I had the Costeletinha Cabrito, and that it's perfectly grilled Baby Back Rack of Lamb over coal. The parking is pretty good thanks to their two parking lots, considering that this is Newark where parking is extremely difficult to find. We will definitely be back to try more from the menu.

Delicious authentic portuguese food. Friendly staff. The sangria is great. The little outdoor patio is fantastic. The parking lot is small and parking on the street can be difficult but that's normal when eating in Newark. Their Bacalhau com natas is amazing and the portion is big.

I have been at this restaurant many times. And the food and service have been always on point. This is why I chose it to celebrate my husbands bday. However, what a big disappointment this was!! The service… awful. We had to continually flag the waiter to tend to us. The food… was not fresh at all. By the time we got our food it was cold and the fish smelled like old fish. Utterly a disappointment all around.

Went with a Groupon coupon which was a very good deal. My wife had a grilled veal chop that was a cooked perfectly and with good flavor. I had a seafood combo in a green sauce that really was delicious. Lobster, Bay scallops, shrimp, clams and mussels. Red sangria was ok, I've had better. Portions were huge and we both had a plentiful lunch with the leftovers the next day. Friendly service and some on site parking. All in all we enjoyed very much.

The food was phenomenal. Sangria excellent. One hiccup…we were attending a concert and stopped here to eat prior. We arrived at shift change aka…dinner break so our substitute server totally forgot us. I didn’t get to enjoy my soup :( or salad because our entrees were already done and probably burning in the window. My husband had to search for our sub to tell him he forgot us. We ate what we could sacrificed the appetizers and packed our to gos. Our real waiter was awesome, despite the delay I’d still recommend giving this place a try. Good food! Parking an issue ask about the additional lot.

Our waitress was wonderful, very kind and attentive. However on mother's day a busy day for anyone we waited for 2 hours for our food. When we went upto the owner/manager he advised us to wait it was coming. Never did he come to the many tables waiting to apologize or ask if we need anything. The restaurant was more occupied with serving the to go orders then those waiting in the restaurant. We spent a total of 4 hours in a restaurant which is ridiculous. The owner/manager needs to be more respectful and attentive to his customers who are seated in the restaurant.

TL;DR the cappuccino feels like a warm hug and has subtle cocoa notes. Went beyond my expectations. I got the Groupon deal ($40 for two...what a steal!) and it came with a half pitcher of sangria, a generous plate of raw oysters, two gigantic meat/clam dishes (I had two huge pork chops and I couldn't even finish one), and two cappuccinos (I loved this the most actually...weirdly enough). Not to mention the wait staff - they were wonderful! There weren't many tables, but when we went (Monday night) there weren't many people, so seating and food delivery was instant. They also include bread, although I would have appreciated it more if they heated it up before serving. Parking was a little difficult (street parking) so be prepared for that.

Great food, great service, great prices. My girl is a hardcore yelper-foodie, and she was very impressed with this place. We got a delicious paella with lobster, and a cod fish dish. Amazing. The house wine is a solid little drink--we tried both the red and the white.

My family has been dining her for several years. It's one of those places where service and quality never get worse over time. Anyone complaining about slow service truly has no idea what food cooked to order is. Authentic Portuguese food cooked to order. Large portions. Service is exceptional. Clean and modern dinning room and bar that is warm and inviting. So far the best in Iron Bound. Just a bit pricey, but average for the area.

I was in town to take care of a family matter and we all met up here for dinner! First, the restaurant is nestled in the ironbound section in a very quaint area. Everyone was complying with CDC guidelines, and also cordial. the food was amazing, I had the garlic shrimp with spanish chips and rice... not a single morsel left on my plate. We also had sangria, one pitcher quickly turned into three.

We had a big party celebrating my cousin's Birthday so that probably played into the fact that everything took really long to come out. But the waiter was really nice about everything. My entree which was grilled salmon with pineapple wasn't the greatest but when my Aunt's came out it tasted better so maybe they were rushing. My favorite thing was the codfish fritters. The atmosphere was enjoyable as well

We had 5 people and were seated immediately in our own front room. our server was really helpful. the food was very good, including the apps. There are 2 little parking lots off the street. They are a tight fit so bring the Corolla in stead of the Armada. Lovely over all experience. We will return.

Very good service and the food was for the most part excellent...the Valencia pallela (yes I know its Spanish) was excellent and the octopus was excellent too. So why the big drop to only 3 stars? Well, we also ordered a dozen raw oysters and we got at least 2 Stale/old/very fishy/bad oysters and got turned off from having the rest and sent 6 back...and told the waiter why. He took them back and then promptly charged us for it anyway on the final bit ...basically saying (without saying) that we really don't care about bad experience with one of our offerings.

Once we were seated the waiter was extremely patient and helpful explaining the very extensive menu - so much to select from you need a bit of time to decide - the fried calamari appetizer was excellent and although only 2 of us --it could have fed 4! The dinners were exceptionally good and again so plentiful. I had the seafood Pahela - full of shrimp, scallop, mussels, clams and lobster served in Spanish rice - it was an upcharge of $6 but so worth the price - enough to take home for another dinner!

We ate the Rack of Lamb six good size chops. Excellent grade. The potatoes were to die for. They were roasted and the flavors were throughout the potatoes. The veggies tasted like they were fresh picked. I have been to a lot of restaurant and never have I had service so professional and friendly. You have to check this place out. We stumbled on this little Portuguese restaurant in the Ironbound section of Newark. Today we flew out of Newark Airport to San Juan Puerto Rico but last night we spent at Best Western Plus where we rented a room and left our car for the trip. The food at PortuCale was SUPER! And the price for what we got was great. The oysters were fresh and very tasty. My wife got the seafood with pasta in a cream sauce and was very happy with it. I got the 14 oz. Strip steak with salmon, done to perfection! I highly recommend this restaurant as the service was super as well. We will go back again. Right now though, I'm enjoying the 81° temperature here in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

The only downfall is that although they do have a parking lot, it is quite small and can fill up easily and street parking in the area can be a little difficult as well. It's best to go on weekdays if possible!

I was here on New Year's Day and made last minute reservations and it was perfect. If you are the person who doesn't like crowds and enjoys a warm home meal, this is the place! The staff and the food was phenomenal! Nothing took long as to being served. This was a perfect place. Music was European and low perfect for conversations. We had a piture of sangria, my husband had the surf and turf, my 9 year old had picadihno and I had the stuffed salmon with crab meat, oh we also had a sampler appetizer, it had octopus, potato, chorizo and shrimp....beautiful flavors!!! Small place and you would not know the caliber of restaurant. Well to follow how great everything went with our first experience that I brought my in laws and the experience was the same the very next day. They have won me/us...we will be back!

We were very lucky to grab an outside table & the last perking space in their lot on a Sunday afternoon when a big soccer game was on & a street fair close by. Our waiter Guillermo was great! PortuCale Restaurant & Bar is one of my favorite go to restaurants for Portuguese food. They are very popular. I would recommend calling in for a reservation, or checking the wait time before going, especially during the weekend. They have two lots one right next to the entrance and the other around the block, still parking can be scarce.

What a nice find, we stopped here for dinner with friends, and this was a good choice. We had the white pitcher of Sangria along with fried calamari which was delicious. The Camarao Guilho shrimp w/garlic sauce was excellent. One of our friends ordered the Rib eye angus and remarked that it was very tender and very good. The seafood combination was very large and good, most of it came home in a doggie bag. This was a good choice for dinner, and we will be back. There is parking on the street with no issues just in case you wondered. Very safe area.

My friend visited me from out of state and I previously had such a great dining experience here (in winter) so I decided to bring this friend to experience this great restaurant. We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon around 530.The place has a parking lot with around 5-6 car capacities. You do need to maneuver a bit to get in and out of the parking lot but the food is worthwhile. We had the combo appetizer -- octopus, Portuguese sausage, shrimp and potatoes (UMA COMBINACAO APERITIVOS PORTUGUESES). The food is so full of flavor. We even dipped our bread in the oil that flavors the shrimp and octopus. Yum!

First time at this delightful and wonderful restaurant. The Portuguese cooking was superb and delicious, just like when I visited the Algarve section of Portugal many years ago. From the appetizers to the entrees and to the wine, it was a great dining experience. The prices were very reasonable and the great service really made you feel warm and friendly just like the Portuguese people themselves make you feel. I love garlic and I will tell you that the octopus in garlic sauce was the best that I've ever eaten -- moist, tender and truly wonderful. We visited from Morristown and the forty minute trip was really worth it. Also, Sunday night is a great time to go because you avoid the crowds that probably go there on Friday or Saturday nights. We will be back for sure.

OK, if you're heading to Portucale the first thing you need to know is ask for Lucas(server). Lucas will make your dining experience phenomenal! Lucas and the rest of the staff are very attentive and friendly. The food is good at Portucale but for some reason tonight's dinner was very delicious, we really enjoyed it.Don't get me wrong, the food is very good as it has been for the times we've visited Portucale. The owner( I assume is the owner) or the manager that is by the entrance or serving at times is ALWAYS humble and friendly. He makes you feel welcomed. I wish him, his family, his business all the best as well for the rest of the staff. The is a bit of a struggle to find a parking spot, once you find it, is worth it. I recommend Portucale.

My first dining experience at Portucale was awesome. The setting was simple but clean and pleasant. Our server Afonso and his assistants were friendly, caring, and accomodating. BEST of all was the food! From my crab stuffed clams to the sirloin with shrimp, mushrooms, artichokes and sun dried tomatoes to the homemade potato chips, there was not a single thing I didn't love.
