Reviews of Hobby's Delicatessen & Restaurant
J Cascardo
Read about this place somewhere, and I just happened to drive by it today. I was lucky to find a parking spot very close. The place is very clean, and the staff is very friendly. Ordered the pastrami on rye with mustard. The portion was good, not extremely big like some other places, but enough…..the pickles were amazing. The pastrami was delicious! Will come back to try other items.

Outstanding pastromi sandwich! I thought I had the best across the river in Manhattan. Nope. Hobby's slices their meat thin which melts in your mouth. Wonderful staff and tips are well welcomed. All is made for take out and you sit yourself at the tables. Check the hours and the Newark Museum is an excellent stop when in the area.

I wanted to try this place for a while and finally got around to it. I used the QRcode they have on the doorusing my credit card which was a good thing. Because they were swarmed with orders. But I got mine when I arrived after placing the order 20 minutes ago. I ordered a Pastrami and Turkey with Cole Slaw and Russian Dressing On Rye. It was very good the portion size was why it was almost $30. It's not a place I would go to weekly because of the price but it's a once in a while tree

Overjoyed for this Newark landmark's re-opening. The sign on the door honestly states test run when I stopped by (limited hours) as they retrain and test a new ordering system. Pastami with mustard and cole slaw and a big half sour pickle made my order and I was in and out within 15 minutes.

Two plus years waiting......5 minutes waiting to place my order.....five minutes waiting for my order....15 minutes slowly savoring the slice of heaven!!!! Had the pastrami and pickle, was going back in for a corned beef but work forced an emergency on me. Going back today.
Brooklyn Bulle
Very old school feel. I was there when the lunch crowd was there, it was crowded. Ladies taking orders were courteous polite and knowledgeable. Food was DELICIOUS.
Deirdre Jackson
Pastrami with cole slaw & russian dressing was delicious. Meat was very tender & not salty. Staff was attentive & courteous.
John Osmak
My sandwich tasted awesome. All top notch ingredients. However for the price of 20 bucks I was expecting much more. The roll was standard size and the over stuffing wasn't really there. Could barely find a roasted pepper in most bites to boot.
Zoe Perry
Unbelievable pastrami sandwich and wonderful owners - don’t ask just trust and get the cole slaw and Russian dressing

They are currently closed for renovations. I passed by it the other day, and Google assumed I visited. Nonetheless, I remember the pastrami here is sooooo good, that the memory compels me to write some appraising words. Put simply, it is that perfectly cooked and flavored beef that the reptile part of your brain constantly craves. If the American Heart Association gave a warning that consuming two of these sandwiches might kill you, the reptile brain would still win. I cannot wait until they reopen!!!!

First and last time. Pastrami on rye cost me $ 20.00 not a huge sandwich like other places. The price was different from online menu. I even called the store back and the lady gave me another price that was cheaper. There's also a picture with a receipt from another review and the same sandwich was $16.00. Don't know what's that's about but I didn't like that at all so I won't be returning.

The Matzo Ball (Baseball sized) soup was 🤌🏾🤌🏾 and my pastrami on rye was 🤤🤯 Hubby went for the highly recommended #5, Corn Beef and Pastrami with Coleslaw and Russian dressing! ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!

I’m so glad an authentic deli is back in Newark. We went from having 3 to having 0. But thank goodness Hobby’s is here. Trying the Pastrami on Rye now and my Mrs got a Rueben. It’s really not bad. Concerned that it’s a bit pricy for the small amount of meat you actually get (sandwiches are definitely not like Bragmans or Coopers in size or quantity) but at least it’s not fried or microwaved. I’m so glad they didn’t forget the traditional pickles. The lines aren’t really that long and eventually they may open for more hours. I Will definitely go again when I have some extra cash. 3 stars easy

Holy cow! What an awesome experience. We had friendly service, great food, and the Devils atmosphere is great! Lots of lovely little holes everywhere if you're paying attention. I highly recommend the Reuben "sliders," though each one is really the size of a whole sandwich. It lets you taste the traditional, Chico, and brisket Reubens, with is good because I still can't choose. We'll definitely be back.

Bit of a wait order got a little mixed up but overall great food good customer service

The food was so delicious! We had read about this place and it was rated #1, but you know you can't always believe what you read. I would definitely have to agree with that statement. When we arrived we were greeted right away by who appeared to be the owner and he also made sure we were doing ok once we got our food. Now that's what I call great service! The price was fair for the amount of food you get. We for there at around 11:30am for lunch and wow, it was so filling and much more. I ordered the corned beef and pastrami sandwich, which they are known for. There was so much meat in that sandwich, I did not know what to do with myself. Each bite was as good as the last one. The meat was super fresh and juicy. Not a single dry bite. The Russian dressing that is placed on the inside of the bread made it so much better. There was just a light coating of it and a light layer of coleslaw as well. It was just enough to get an extra crunch to every bite. I loved that it was not over powering and made the sandwich how it should be. I also ordered a side of the pasta salad. Such a perfect size for such an enormous sandwich size. It was not bland and was not over bearing with flavors. It was just perfect and I loved the fresh vegetables that were diced up so you can get a little bite with the pasta. I was too full, but I had to order a hamentashen to go. I ordered the apricot flavor and it is the size of my hand. I cannot wait to devour this later. I am sure it is as great as the food they serve! Highly recommend coming here to eat!!!
Oh and I cannot forget the friendly service we had! Everyone was so happy and they greeted us with a smile. The lady at the check out counter was just as pleasant as everyone else there. Great work guys!

Incredible food and huge portions at Hobby’s. This old-school family deli has an enormous menu, which left us planning our next trip back. One of the owners, Michael, chatted with us for a while during our meal, which added even more to the comfortable, welcoming, family vibe. The potato pancakes were better than any I’d had before, and the matzah ball soup was picture-worthy. There were several vegetarian and vegan options too, including a Mediterranean grilled vegetable platter with divine homemade hummus. Must try!

Full disclosure: we did not eat here. However, our family was trying to find a place to eat at 9am and must have looked like the lost tourists (stranded by a missed airplane connection). One of the gentlemen who has worked there for 30 years walked across the street to us and offered to help. He walked us down the street to one place which was closed, then suggested two more places for us. We ended up at Central Restaurant, a diner that has been around for 100 years and we really enjoyed. But just the man going out of his way to help us was so nice. If we ever get stranded here again I'll make sure to go by when it's open!

Visited Saturday. Busy afternoon. I remember lunches and parties at Hobby's working for Bambergers.
As I entered there was a kiosk which I was not familiar with. A Karen with ear plugs dismissively told me to use it to order. A young lady( an Angel)asked if I needed help with ordering. Her name is Kim D . She was helpful, knowledgeable of the menu and very polite. Called me mama. I was thankful for her help. Not only did she save me but she saved Karen from a brutal tongue lashing.
Thank you Kim. Many blessings. You deserve a raise and Karen needs to go in the back and take customer service classes.
Ed Kohler
Great owners and friendly staff. Some of the best deli I've had. Huge portions. Been coming here before Devils games for a number of years now, it is great on gameday seeing all the fans in there.
Brooklyn BULL-E
Very old school feel...food is 💰, well worth every penny. …
Lawrence Hobson
Good, way overpriced.. I wouldn't go out of my way because there are better rueben places in nyc.. but if ur downtown newark doing whatever the hell you're doing there, and ur craving a 20 dollar rueben they're decent. Downtown newark is literally a ghost town this place has steady customers for lunch
Mrs. Love
Yummy! Coleslaw sounds it off…a bit pricey but you need this in your life
Packtraverller
As usual they made a great pastrami sandwich. My friend had a Brisket and Pastrami that he said was very good as well.
Kelly Schuler
The corned beef and the pastrami are yummy, yummy, yummy! Melts your mouth. The staff is friendly and efficient.
Rob Jelinski
This location will be appearing on the silver screen in The Many Saints of Newark. The whole block has a retro vibe to it (the few blocks surrounding it was just used for a film set of the Joker movie) and I just had to snap a picture of it. I hear the food is very delicious as well!!
Anna JT
The best pastrami sandwich ever.
Michelle Candela
Fabulous Deli! Great Food! Great People! A gem! Get your Pastrami here!
Sean Gallagher
Incredible food, and an even better game day atmosphere when the Devils are taking the ice up the road. Very friendly people too -- just good vibes. Can't wait to get back there.
Adam Jones
Fresh roasted turkey & rye. Those of you that know- Hobby’s been consistent for many decades. Stop in there and treat yourself to a top quality sandwich and soup
Robert Zaragoza
I used to go to hobby in the 1972 -1979 wow the pastrami sandwich, the best, I tell everyone when in Newark, stop at hobby s .
Anthony Corino
The BEST! Can’t really say anything about this place that hasn’t already been said. Forget Katz’s, the real deal is Hobby’s. They close pretty early unless there’s a Devils game!
Erik Bassett
Glad it's back open and the pastrami sandwiches are still delicious. However $17 for a pastrami sandwich is not in my lunch budget, won't be returning for awhile.
Stovaotri
Our go to deli whenever we visit, a must go to anyone who are Devils fans or just fans of good food.
Kenneth Holmes
A real Jewish deli, I haven't been in one in many years. The pastrami on rye was to die for. The waitress was Kurt kind and very efficient. It was New York in Newark New Jersey love this place
Peace
I clearly remember going here during grandpa's time with my coworkers when I was on lunch hour when I was a CITY IF NEWARK EMPLOYEE. Sandwiches are plentiful and delightful to taste. Customer's service is a welcoming feeling. I would recommend this spot. Thumbs up on the newly renovated appearance and hospitality is still a wonderful feeling environment.
Fran Alexander
I ordered a Pastrami sandwich. It was too salty and over cooked. Tasted like mush, no taste to it.
Denise Madison
Take out sandwich. It was pricey but it worth it.
Gregory Presnal
Great melt in your mouth Pastrami sandwich! The best I've had in many years.
Benjamin Ozegowsky
Nothing like it outside NYC or some Suburbs not near Newark.
Friendly and Welcoming.
VERY happy Hobby's finally Reopened.
Afevis Solmunko
The best deli ever. Go there, don't even bother looking at the menu; order a number 5, and enjoy.

My husband and I grew up in Newark NJ and regularly ate at Hobby's. Sandwiches, especially Pastrami are DELICIOUS.
We moved to Virginia about thirty years ago.
Whenever we came to Newark, stopping by Hobby's for two Pastrami sandwiches was a MUST do.
On Saturday October 23, 2021 coming from New Haven CT, we made it our business to go to by Hobby's to get our sandwiches. Hobby's was closed👁️👁️😯😢.
Standing outside, Hobby's looked as if it was closed down. A gentleman passing by said, "Hobby's isn't open anymore",😱. Is that the truth????
IS THAT TRUE....
TODAY IS TUESDAY MARCH 8, 2022. HAS HOBBY's DELICATESSEN & RESTAURANT FINISHED RENOVATION AND REOPENED??

They make the best Pastrami Sandwiches!!!! From time to time even though they are currently closed I pass by there and hope and pray that they are open. Recently I saw a gentleman doing some work outside the building I actually backed up to asked if they were coming back and I was so excited to find out they will be shortly!! Hooray Hobby’s

Seemed a bit pricey but on the other hand it was absolutely delicious (#5 combo). Also was larger than it looked. I'm still full from eight hours ago.
Osama Qazi
Ah-mazing pastrami! Best I have ever had. Like ever. A must stop for me every visit to NJ.
Ashley Pritchett
Friendly staff, great service, and yummy food! What more could you ask for in a restaurant?
Newark Bicycle-Coop
They're finally back open! A $20 sandwich that's worth every penny
Ian Lilien
Flew in from Dallas for a meeting. The food was fantastic! I grew up in Queens and really miss the deli experience.
H K
Great sandwiches, good service, historic restaurant. Sons of the original owner doing it right, would go back
William Cradle
The best corned beef sandwich that I have had in years.
Natalie
A true deli with generous portions and flavor.
Also diehard NJ Devils fans with a great sense of humor
Chris von Allmen
Had the pastrami and corned beef sandwich. It was excellent!
Dan Zablosky
Drove a long way for the perfect sandwich. Corned beef and Pastrami. Plan on skipping dinner. Classic place was just what I imagined.
Brian Atchue
This place is a staple in Newark and is a must visit. Food is delicious

Arrived for opening at 1130am to line with9 people ahead. Doors opened 1140...waited 25 minutes for order to be ready

The Perfect Lunch! Pastrami on rye with creamy coleslaw & Dr. Brown's black cherry pop to wash it all down!!
Thomas Taylor
The pastrami is good, Newarks only one left.
Emanuel Vizzotti
As far as Jewish delis go, you really can't beat it - everything is top notch!
MARKIS Y
shud of had a lot more dressing on my sandwich in which i payed for...meat was fresh tho.
Thom Pooley
Best deli in New Jersey. You can not find a better sandwich anywhere. Try their fresh all-dark-meat turkey sandwich on rye with cole slaw. You always get a Kosher pickle too.
Kai Mccray
Since I can remember going to the hobbies I always had a great experience and the food always tasty, delicious
Lisa Ramsay
What an awesome find! We were in town for A Devils game and picked out based on reviews. Outside doesn't look like much and we couldn't see the dining room so decided to look for something else. So glad the owner came out and let us know there was seating inside! Order the #5! It made them famous and now I know why! Best corned beef, pastrami, cold slaw and Russian on rye. Best ever!
L. Mendoza
Delivered and everything was delicious!!
The potato pancakes were hot and crispy.
Pairing with the cool sour cream and apple sauce was very yummy!
The matzoh ball soup is delish! Well seasoned! Onion rings were very crispy and tasty!
Chicken turkey salad sandwich was something new but I was pleasantly surprised and pickles galore!
Richard Valera
Melt in your mouth Pastrami! Fantastic food from a Newark institution.
James Obrien
This place has amazing amazing food on a large scale.
Looks like a hole in the wall but great food and services.
Ms. Angela Mason
I was next door, at Born Exotic. The owner is professional and personable. The business's clientele includes major entertainment figures. I was impressed!
Carol Williams
This place won't strike you as a restaurant that serves fine or gourmet food. But OMG, they got the most awesome pastrami sandwich ever. Its pastrami sandwich (#5 on the menu) had the size of the sandwich from the "Carnegie Deli" from the days by-gone but the taste was definitely better. My sandwich meat was was juicy and melted in my mouth.
Joshua South
This establishment is a gem within a tough area of Newark, New Jersey and receives a 5 star rating that I give rarely even to exceptional restaurants. aIt is justifiable strongly rated restaurant with many strengths. The quantity and quality of food is exceptional. The menu has tremendous variety, one of the largest I have seen. They also change items to accommodate individual patron needs. The tuna salad is homemade with fresh ingredients. They make everything homemade. The large cookie was delicious. The free pickles were great. The services is exceptional for a very crowded restaurant.
mason dent
Absolutely love this place. Had an excellent meal here with a group of friends before an event at Prudential Center. The food is awesome, absolutely delicious smoked meats, and great sweets as well. Our waitress was super helpful and very funny. Love this place, will be back any time I am in Newark.
Joseph Tanzi
The decor was lacking, and the tables were rickety... But the pastrami, corned beef, and brisket sandwich was perfect. If I had to make one comment on the meal I would say that the brisket was slightly greasy. "Tank", our server was polite and made sure my colleagues and I had a great experience. I would definitely come back next time I'm in Newark - and I'll be sure to try a black & white.
Christina Jackson
Best pastrami on rye EVER. Cheeseburger was excellent too. We didn’t get the onion rings, but they looked incredible and I swear I could’ve just reached over and grabbed one off that customers plate! Lol THIS place is a must try! A classic deli -- and with absolutely excellent food! The pastrami is the best I've found in NJ. I've had other sandwiches, and they too are excellent; and the muffins, cookies, etc., are nothing short of excellent as well. Go there, have the experience of being in a classic deli...and just savor the food!!! Hobby's is legendary, a classic, legendary institution...just go!!!
Shawn Kelly
My sister and I were hungry and didn't want to eat at Newark Airport. So, we looked up restaurants in Newark and had strong positive reviews. I am so pleased to be adding my voice to that 5 star ratings. The pastrami and the corned beef are fantastic - every time (been there 3 times in the last 2 months). The last time I visited, I took my whole family and it turns out the meatloaf sub is also spectacular. We all loved sampling the sour pickles and half sours on the table. It's not fancy but man do they deliver on the sandwiches! I will go out of my way to eat there whenever I'm in the area.
Loreno III
Warm, friendly, and cheeky owners. Awe-inspiring pastrami and corned beef. Delicious complimentary pickles. Split-pea soup felt wrong without ham hock, but the mushroom barley was tasty. The decor is straight out of the 60s, but the prices are very tragically 21st century. Be prepared to leave stuffed and ready to slip into a nitrate-induced coma.
Matt R
I attended an event in Newark that catered from Hobby's. The variety of sandwiches were excellent, including gluten free, and the presentation was beautiful. No cheap salty deli meat. The potato salad had a nice oniony kick, and the pickles were absolutely amazing. Even the dressings were excellent- there was some kind of mayonnaise that was a bit spicy. Really really good food.
Tim R
Wow. Wasn’t sure what to expect going in. Awesome service, tons of choices, the bbbs pastrami corned beef brisket combo sandwich was the best I’ve had...ever. I got a half with home style chicken noodle soup, then ordered the other half of the sandwich cause it was so good. The onion rings are on point too! Nice assortment Of baked goods. This is the kind of place that it’s getting hard to find these days. Small, local, super friendly, and of course absolutely delicious. They are also patriots and support the armed services. Hobby’s I’ll be back!
TutsPlus
Having just arrived in the US, and having a terrible first night, this breakfast put our group on to an excellent start to the day. Staff were so polite and caring. It was a joy chatting with them. Had a poached egg and sausage combo with toast and a soda. Perfect eggs and the home fries were a delightfully original surprise. This was the famous hospitality I was told to expect from the US and the staff here certainly didn't disappoint. Wish I could have fit more in as the pastrami sandwiches looked delicious. I definitely recommend hobby's for that local family feeling.
Howard Bernstein
Excellent Jewish style deli. Good meat, good size portions. Great place to go before an event at Prudential Center. Not many good Jewish delis around so it was nice to find this one before a Devil's game. Will definitely go back.
Bill Speziale
The absolute best. Have been having turkey sandwiches there for over 50 years. Michael and Mark are continuing the tradition of their dad Sam in providing great food and service. The waitresses and staff are perfect. People are treated as family. Highest recommendation possible.
Gregory Lieberman
I had a corned beef Reuben and my friend got the pastrami. U will spend between $18 and $25 or so for one, but it's worth it imo. It's not only huge but comes with all the extras, pickles were great, fries were slamming, and a ton of meat. This spot or bragmans are the ones for me if ur in Newark.
Mary Nelson
This restaurant is a real gem. Only place in town that still serves tongue sandwiches, a real plus. The owner is present and makes sure everything is responsive. Excellent, long menu of choices. Comfortable seating but can be a bit noisy at peak hours. Good multi-ethnic server staff. Fun place to visit. And to return to regularly. Food quality is excellent and portions substantial.
Beth Lewis
Came here for lunch based on the reviews from Tripadvisor and it did not disappoint. Tried the lunch special of Half Sandwich, cup of soup and a fountain drink. Ate their Pastrami sandwich on Rye bread, had a cup of Chicken Corn chowder and a diet coke. The sandwich and soup were both delicious. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a great meal at a good price.
djinn davis
The of the best and oldest place in Newark to get the best pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. It has been a staple and landmark in the downtown area of newark for years. Family owned and family friendly.
Jake Rosenfield
Wow, is this a great Jewish style deli.
My basis for a great Jewish deli is the hot pastrami ...and this sandwich is spot on!! It is great. Moist, well made sandwich and not just stacked on. Just the right amount of fat. Each bit was special. I have no idea what the negatives where about. This is a great sandwich. I also loved the stamped metal bowl they place on the table full of different kinds of delicious pickles in brine. Boy, is that old school.
I feel is it better than Katz's and 1/2 the price. Really worth the trip!
Great old neon sign above the store front.
John Murray
This place is GREAT. We just arrived in NJ and this was our first experience of the food and the people. We were not disappointed. Very friendly and accommodating staff, with delicious food (the bacon was great!) and good conversation. The owner came to chat with us just because, and he was very nice, friendly and helpful on what to do in the local area. The 'home fries' were simply outstanding! Thanks!
Rhonda G
I work in Newark. My Dad goes to Katz cause he worked in NYC. I go here because it’s down the street from my job. The sandwiches are very good. Excellent portion. Excellent meats. I had the corned beef and pastrami. Could not even finish it. I always take it home for my kids to enjoy.
Reagan Walcott
Loved this place, we are from Arizona. We were welcome with warm hellos from everyone. It's a simple place with spectacular pastrami and pot pie. It was quiet so we could talk and enjoy our lunch. From Mrs. Arizona thank you for the memories and full tummies.
Mike Moreland
Had a bacon cheeseburger. Tasted like meatloaf not a burger. Bacon was hard and chewy. Also chopped salad w grilled chicken. Very good. Fresh.. service was first rate. 5 stars.. place is old a rundown. Does not matter. It has personality. Only issue was the burger. Disappointed..
Karman Beamon
I have been eating at Hobby's since I was a child. The quality of the sandwiches is excellent. Their pastrami sandwiches are lean. I love the pea soup and the mushroom barley soup. They are both just right for a cold winter's day.
Jon Sterling
I had a Pastrami sandwich my friend a Pastrami and corned beef both were top notch. Great food right by the Prudential center. Cole slaw was also very good but I was surprised I had to order as a side. I will be back..
Renters Land (RentersLand)
If you have not tried this place you
Must go! I went their right before Christmas to have a business lunch meeting and I was licking my plate clean. The sandwiches are amazing. The atmosphere is great. The food portions are big! The staff was amazing Customer service the absolute best. I look forward to having more business meetings here and just going!
Steve Graham
Definitely loved this place. My son and I visited this place today from the Seattle area, and we had the rueben and the pastrami and corn beef sandwich. The portions are very generous, and it is a good example of an authentic, old-school deli. The owners and staff were very friendly.
C- LO
Used to get tuna melts all the time there worked at the T-Mobile down the street amazing customer service will definitely go back for there grand opening
Jason King
This lil place is a jewel of Newark. Great food, price and service. I had the Matzo ball soup (home style ) and it amazing. If your in the area or live near by and never been here before Please make time and go. You will not be disappointed.
matthew ingram
Great food and great service. The roast beef was fresh, tender and very generous. My first time having Matza ball soup, which was totally awesome. The walnut oatmeal raising cookie is otherworldly!
Adventures & Things
We came here on game day and everyone except us was wearing a devils jersey. It was crazy busy but we still got amazing service. Then there’s the food, I got the classic Reuben pastrami it was beautiful. After I was done crying from it’s beauty I dove in and it was the best damn sammich I done ever had with a little Dijon I felt like I was in some sort of space time continuum. I was a young Stephen Hawkins frolic in the abyss of a black hole of delicious. I also had a cookie it too was good.
gainey wendellc
Excellent food and service...The best place to eat in all of Newark! Really enjoyed the corned beef and sauerkraut . Everything arrived hot, fresh and bursting with flavor. Server was friendly and on point. Atmosphere is fun and friendly.
Bob Denton
Found this deli thanks to jury duty. Had my first pastrami & rye in many years. Food & menu we're great. They've been around many years and have a big lunch and take out crowd. FWIW, a lot of the clientele were lawyers.
Rhone Hinojosa
Great Reuben sandwich! Took one to-go and ate it at hotel a few hours later and it was still so good. The balance of the cole slaw and dressing was perfect to cut through the fat.
Fred Foggy Alexander
Absolutely Delicious! Go for the #5
Wendy Hartmann
You won’t find another deli like Hobby’s! I had a corned beet & pastrami and it was amazing. You definitely get your money’s worth because their sandwiches are piled high and I was full past dinner time. I’ll be honest, the ordering process was a little confusing, but the staff were very helpful and kind.
Lisa I
First time ordering from hobby's... It's close to work so we went to pick up. Parking is a bit of a hassle but it was lunch time so my sure if it's always like that but the food was excellent! We were so happy with our orders... Definitely going to be repeat customers.
Leo González
A Newark institution, great deli, huge sandwiches
Stefan Neustadter
Super sandwiches and pastries (the best black & whites) on NJ side of the Hudson..
. You will not go home hungry, good, pleasant service. It's the last Jewish style deli in Newark.
Alex Milan
Go to place for a fresh pastrami sandwich on rye with mustard
Joey D
We really enjoyed our lunch here at this old school Jewish Deli where they don't miss a Beat. We where is seated promptly had menus in our hands within seconds and within a minute or two at beverages were delivered and our order taken which also arrived in under 5 minutes totally amazing service, our waitress was a total doll and I highly recommend this establishment which blows the doors off Katz's Deli in New York City
La-Juan Hartsfield
Newark's Own....and amazing food and love
Hallie
Great homemade bread, great sandwiches, nice traditional Jewish deli. The Reuben was delicious, poutine was good, these are large portions. The menu lists everything that comes on the sandwich, the less expensive sandwiches are just bread and meat with a la carte add-ons. I say, pay the extra, and get something with all of the extras included because the plain brisket sandwich was very dry. The free pickles and pickled green tomatoes are not good. Great huge cookies for dessert.

Great sandwiches we order a pastrami and corn beef combo sandwich and it was EXCELLENT. We had to go back again! Will highly recommend. Great staff. So glad I went will be going back again!
franklin fernandez
The best corned beef sandwich in NJ period.
Service is on point, with an old fashioned flare.
I can’t wait for my next Jury Duty, so that I can stop by Hubby’s.
Robert Johnsen
It was 30 years since my last visit and nothing has changed! Great split pea soup and sandwich. Onion rings were fresh and fried perfectly. Staff are top notch, too.
Mike Schechter
Quality old school deli with good pastrami and great potato knishes (round, not square variety). I was a little disappointed that they don’t have some of the traditional sides like barley and mushrooms or kasha varnishkes, but this will definitely be a stop next time I fly through Newark.
Joe Krisocki
Great pastrami is becoming harder to find. Go here!
Miss Brown (Mother Brown)
This place feels like home. And the food taste so good it will make your tongue wanna slap YA BRAIN!!!
K Grammaticas
Wow. Best real deli!! Delicious and portions are generous. Did not disappoint. The people working there are fantastic and it's a great atmosphere. Definitely go!
Heather Carpani
First time to Hobby's on the way out for a flight from Newark, based on the word of a lifelong New Yorker who called Hobby's "the best Pastrami outside on NYC". He definitely was not wrong! Been craving another ever since and making my own sandwiches tonight, but doubtful that will satisfy the craving. See you soon Hobby's!
Chuck Bradford
Get the #5- Corned Beef & Pastrami with coleslaw and Russian dressing. This simple explanation belies the true chemistry of this masterpiece. Add a spinach and potato knish and brace yourself for a blissful experience, primed for a sporting event or a contented nap.
Brian Hubbard
It all started about 20 years ago I came here as a service technician for the boiler. The old man gave me a corned beef on rye with a pickle as a tip. To tell the truth that was the best tip ever. I have not found another corned beef on rye to match. I'm blessed hobbies only about a half a mile away from my house. If you want to know what I'm talking about come get blessed at hobbies you'll understand.
Rob “Lastmindude” Basista
One of best place to have lunch before a afternoon NJ Devils game. I had Chico special one day, came back for hat trick sandwich, both were excellent! LET'S GO DEVILS!
Corey Ferrell
Growing up in New York City, real Delis meant real local comfort food - great hot dogs, pastrami, corned beef, kineshes, lox & bialys, and Dr. Browns. Sadly, there were many great spots. Gladly, Hobby's is still here. And here they are with everything you could want including the #5. I won't explain it here, just go and eat - it's amazing and worth the trip. And it's really not that bad of a trip - just over the river and a 5 min walk. Well, I hang out in midtown so maybe a 10 min walk for people without jetpacks on their feet. On a recent visit, we had the hot dog appetizers, #5s, pickled tomatoes ( if you haven't tried these yet, put 'em on your list - ther're exactly what they sound like - cross between ba pickle and a tomato for those of us who are not hard-core pickle-lovers, maybe), and their home-made bread pudding - ohhh, I'm having flashbacks.....
Mark, Mike & staff are awesome! You'll feel like you're going to your Uncle's place - warm, welcoming, family vibe. Not a late-night spot, go early for breakfast, lunch, brunch, chase with bread pudding, digest, nap, repeat!
Andrea Lopez
As always restaurant Lorena's didn't disappoint. You must get the crab crepe and I usually do (my wife did) so I tried the octopus app...glad I did! Most tender I have ever had. My venison was also better than most filets I have ever had. Outstanding as usual and I love that you can BYO!!!
Demorris Bethea
I first discovered Hobby's during the early 70's. I was working as a shoe salesman at John Hardy's, corner of Washingtion & Market Sts. My favorite sandwich was the #5 still is today the quality of the meats are just as excellent as they were in the 70's. If you want good quality food visit Hobby's you will not be disappointed, hello #5 see you soon.
steven Rosner
I deliberately ventured to downtown Newark ,NJ,to try this Jewish(non-kosher) delicatessen. I was definitely NOT dissapointed, with their delicious home-style chicken soup, with an added matzo-ball. And,their brisket is as flavorful, and as tender as any kosher-style brisket;that has ever existed. I also learned that Hobby's,is rather popular with NJ Devil's fans. It is located, within several blocks of Newark's Prudential Arena.
Terry Harris
Sandwiches are fresh, put together good very well and presentation is good, workers are pleasant. Those persons that attended the meeting really enjoyed the sandwiches and some inquired where did they come from.
E S
Great Food! Great Breakfast! Sit Down and Relax
Preference, Customers Money, Customers should be allowed to leave a TIP to the person serving them, Server Should Not have to share Tip! Very Unfair!
Luis “ThePilot” Lopez
Well if you Like Katz Delicatessen, you will love it here. Excellent Pastrami sandwiches and nice seating of to the side. Good fast service. Pricing is a bit up their.
Bernard Schwartz
Had a corned beef sandwich and a coke best corned beef I had in years
JerseyBill
Great sandwich but high prices. My lunch with a small mac salad and very small fountain soda came to 21 dollars with tip 24. won't be coming back any time soon.
Pat taylor
They are back...I've been coming here since 1968
April-Michelle Thomas
I have never eaten something from here that wasn't delicious. The food is pricey but if you need something good without taking a gamble, it's worth it. Definitely try their homemade pastries and soups!
Cal Rosenthal
Great pastrami. Terrific matzoh ball soup, unbelievable knish and the desert a great chocolate chip cookie. What could be bad. Give it a try you’ll love it
Peace Love
The most fresh Meats for a sandwich! You'll fall in love, and become a customer quick! Great menu for ALL✔ REUBEN KING THIS PLACE #1✔
Austin Bennett Green
Yummy jewish deli. Devil fans go to joint pregame. Worth going beforehand. Menu is as expected. Food is great. Make it a part of your hockey game day repertoire.
R. H.
Hobby’s Deli is in a league of its own. Its one of the greatest delis in the The NYC Metro area. When you compare Hobby’s, you don’t compare it to your local deli, you compare it to Katz or Harold’s. Great food, great service. You’ll see, it’s iconic.
Jarubi Howard
They still make the best pastrami and corned beef sandwiches sometimes I think the quality of the corned beef is not what I expect they need to step it up a little bit more I had some bread pudding it was great I have yet to try their brownies the knishes are wonderful service nice
Christine Yup
It's unfortunate that I didn't follow Seth P.'s recommendation on this old-timey joint for more than three years, but I finally had some time to venture out here on a weekday (check the schedule before going; this is a daytime-only spot and is closed on Sunday.)
Although I'd normally select pastrami as the crucial bellwether for a Jewish deli, corned beef was mentioned more frequently in news articles, was listed first on the menu and was house-cured, so that was my choice. I enjoyed the juicy, substantial sandwich.
The homestyle soup was a massive stunner. It went a step beyond typical deli soup by adding parsnips. Another good touch was that in additional to regular pickles, there were pickled tomatoes.
While I won't venture all the way through the surprisingly long menu for offerings like mac and cheese, I may check out the hot dog next time.
Li Th
Great people, running a classic family owned deli steeped in Newark history. Not to be missed. Great house made pastrami and corned beef.
S Hinkson
Can't beat this old school deli. It's a traditional deli plus Newark vibe through and through. The corned beef is a must! And the house made picked are super yummy.
B T
What a fantastic place!! If you’ve never been here boy are you missing out. Everything is good. I have trouble picking a menu item because everything is delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough.
lisa english
Good authentic Jewish deli food made by kind people who genuinely want you to enjoy their food. Pastrami, corned beef, matzoh ball soup and good pickles. Need I say more?
Sunil Singh
Omg great food. Cant wait to go back. A bit expensive 24$ for a canned soda and a sandwich no fries, no snack(chips, etc) comes with 2 different style litlle pickles tho.
Robert LoGiudice
Great Jewish deli in the heart of Newark. Just two blocks from the prudential center. If roast beef and pastrami are not your thing I highly recommend the Thanksgiving wrap.
Yo Critic
I was feeling terrible and I asked for a coffee and even though I was a stuttering stumbling mess the customer service was very attentive and for the first time in my life asked me to try the coffee to make sure they got it to my liking. Definitely will go again.
Steven Horneffer
Juicy pastrami, delicious pickles, good coleslaw. Have to keep reminding servers to refill the iced tea , but that is a standard defect in Yankee waiters.
Rory Lovelace
Simply an awesome place to dine. Old fashioned atmosphere; super friendly staff. My first choice for dinner before a Devils Game!
Hanri Glemaud
A true pillar in the city of Newark, especially downtown. One of the greatest and oldest establishments in the city. Love the the food (the sandwiches to be exact). I'll always be a regular
Jessy Leifer
Hobby's is the best! Family owned. Staff is always friendly and helpful. True kosher style deli and a Newark institution. Definitely go here
Steve Wilcox
Classic Jewish deli food. Just had pastrami on rye and some half sour pickles with black cherry soda. Great experience will be back!
Painter Ehrlich
Had the club.
It was good but be advised the prices online are old.
Ended up spending over 17.50 for a takeout sandwich (no side) listed at 12.50.
Daniel Bombard
What an awesome deli! Had an amazing pastrami and corned beef sandwich. Maybe the best onion rings my wife and I ever had.
Jeff Strickland
Good roast beef sandwich and friendly servers. Overpriced. A Reuben at PJ Clarks in Manhattan costs $16. Here it's $15 and there's no comparison.
Ed Armm
I've been going to Hobby's since the 60s when my dad worked downtown. Great Deli, love the pastrami and staff. Great food at fair prices
9NER 4EVER
True historical landmark in the city of Newark. Never lost its touch in the taste of delicatessen, just great. However, you get less for more ($) now.
Melissa Coale
Great Pastrami, Tongue, and Corned Beef Triple Decker Sandwiches. A pastrami poutine is always a good choice. Great stop before Devil games.
Peter Wanchisen
Went looking for a good Ruben. This was good, but not a Stage Deli (resently closed NY). Nice one day trip from our area. Would I do it again.. nah
Derek Dean
It's every thing you want in a deli. The second you walk in, it's everything it needs to be. And the #5 is a terrific sandwich, worth every single penny. Anytime I'm near prudential I'm stopping in.
Janet S Lee
Great pastrami sandwiches! They even chose the leanest piece for me. 5 minute walk from Essex county courthouse when you're on jury duty!
Bruce Levin
One of the best pastrami sandwiches you're likely to eat. Friendly service in a comfortable and relaxed setting.
Alan R.
The friendliest deli in New Jersey, amazing food served by great people.

Neil Templeton
Great old school atmosphere. Great sandwiches. Reasonable prices. One of my favorite stops in all of Newark.
celine sayoc
The food was very good, simple and large portioned. The staff was friendly and attentive. The only complaint was a bit pricey considering location and atmosphere.
Beatrice Mudenyo

The real deal. Would be nice if it were kosher, but most of the patrons are not Jewish anymore. If you're from out of the NY area, this is a must. If you're not, it still a must.
Mrs PD SAUN
