Reviews of Willie Mae's Scotch House
This place is a beautiful part of history that serves some delicious chicken. The batter is light and crispy and the chicken has just enough spice to warm your lips. The butter beans are creamy and buttery and the red beans are just a little smokey. The bread pudding with rum sauce was also perfect as the flavour instantly transported me back to childhood Christmas. It was very emotional eating here knowing the history and the incredible people that have dined here before me. It was like having dinner with greatness.
My sister and I were on our way to a totally different restaurant when two people in a row said if you want great fried chicken go to Willie Mae's, so that's where we ended up. We waited for more than an hour, but it went by rather fast. The waitresses are very nice once you get inside, which makes you forget about the long wait. Let me tell you though Willie Mae's chicken is awesome. I have never tasted breast meat so tender, juicy and well seasoned. For the chicken alone I would have waited longer. We had the catfish as well as the butter beans, Mac and cheese and green beans. The Mac and cheese was just basic. I like my Mac stuck together like pie and there's is loose with a hint of spice. The butter beans are okay and the catfish is delicious 😋 I did not like the bread pudding at all. It was very sweet and mushy. They had no problem removing it from our bill. When I come back to New Orleans I will be coming here for more fried chicken.
We stopped by Willie Mays for a late lunch today we waited about 40 minutes to be seated, it was well worth the wait.. We ordered the three piece fried chicken with mac & cheese and peas and a salad with grilled chicken a side of red beans and rice. The chicken is absolutely amazing!. Red beans and rice was also great! It is a must stop when you are in New Orleans.
Oh my God. This was the best fried chicken I had ever had. So crunchy and juicy. It was super flavorful. I got dark meat fried chicken, mac and cheese and a corn muffin. The corn muffin was excellent as well, moist and buttery. The mac and cheese was good but I've had better. The price was reasonable for as many awards as they have. I went later and I didn't have to wait. I just walked in. The hours have changed on some days and my uber driver was worried that hey would be closed but they were open till 8. There are benches outside if there is a wait. There is a sign to scan to add yourself to the wait list if there is a line.
The fried chicken is one of the best I’ve ever had. The batter is excellent - it has a lot of uneven surfaces from bubbles, creating these satisfying crevices that yield an instant oily satisfaction. The skin is crispy and magically airy at the same time. The meat is tender, and actually a little flavored inside. The sweet potato fries are also very well done - super oily and extra crispy, with a soft inside.
I was accompanied by Boston’s foremost expert on fried chicken (self-appointed; she eats fried chicken once a week), and she agrees that this spot is the best one in the States.
Make sure to get the dark meat for juice and flavor. And don’t forget the fried catfish! It’s the unsung hero on the menu.
Oh and cover your children’s ears when you take that first bite. It’s so good that you may start swearing.
We got the dessert (bread putting with white rum sauce; caution: it bites) by accident but actually enjoyed it!
Never disappoints. I've come here for 30 years. There is no better food in New Orleans or the world for that matter. Keep it basic fried chicken and red beans. Pure perfection. You will see a line, yet if you have to wait this is definitely the place. Scan the QR; grab a spot and chat up the other guest.
The fried chicken definitely live up to expectations. Everything you heard about the fried chicken are all true. It’s crunchy, hot, juicy, and spiced in the right way. Fried shrimps are also very nice, fresh, and flavorful. This is a must try place in New Orleans for fried chicken.
Absolutely great food. The best fried chicken I have ever had, hands down. The fried chicken (dark meat) tasted absolutely fresh; even the skin of the meat tasted great which is something I usually avoid.
We also had the Willie Mae Chicken Sandwich which was also the best. The oozing sauces just upped the flavours to the next level. So were the Red (Kidney) Beans with rice and the Bread Pudding. The cornbread also tasted great.
The only issue is with the wait time which can be well upwards of an hour, so be prepared for that. You may park your vehicle somewhere on the streets.
But the wait will be worth it. Highly recommend!!!
I have the honor of the 5,001 review! That should tell you a lot about a place, right?!?! This place is next level hot chicken and southern sides! The staff is friendly and the service is A1, thank you Yvonne!!!! My daughter and I had the chicken, Mac+cheese, corn bread, and mashed potatoes….everything was delicious. My recommendation is get there alittle before 11am. Make sure to scan the QR code to join the waitlist. Did I mention how good the fried chicken is?!?!?
