Absolutely loved everything I had! The kay Kay with tender goat was amazing. Sambusas were excellent, especially the beef with the green sauce. Prices were affordable and serving size was generous. Staff was friendly and helpful.

If you have any hesitation, squash that hesitation like a bug and come eat here! Your taste buds will thank you later! For as long as I've lived in the east side I have come to blue star! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Service is so friendly and professional. Servings are plenty large, especially for the price! I get two meals out of kay Kay or platters, mostly because it's so good I want it to last 2 days. Kay Kay is probably my favorite thing on the menu. They pile that bad boy high with yummy, broth-soaked ciabatta, raisins, potato, onion, and your choice of meat. And you have to get a spider of either hummus or sambusas, obviously!!

From the moment I drove up until I drove off, I was very pleased. This little restaurant is a family owned treasure. It was my first visit and hopefully not my last. Unfortunately, I'm not a resident of Milwaukee. It's clean and sanitary which is a major issue for many small establishments but not them, not at Blue Star. You could eat of the floor but don't. Lol Before I could open the door the aroma filled the air. My mouth watered so much I could barely order. Considering everything we ordered was made fresh and the fact that we were behind two others, I was surprised how quickly the food arrived. She had vegan and non vegan options. The customer service(we met the chef) was out of this world. I thought I was at home in my grandmother's kitchen. The food had love and joy in every bite. The atmosphere is family friendly and welcoming.

It was our first time eating there. They welcomed us kindly and explained the menu. It seemed like everyone there knew each other so it was a very relaxed experience. The food was GOOD. We had the Tender Goat and it lived up to the name. It was very tender and flavorful. The side of rice with veggies and raisins was also really good. We'd definitely go back.

Got the chicken suqaar with noodles and it was truly one of the best meals I've had all year. Such rich flavor, just the right amount of kick, and very filling! I will definitely be back whenever I'm in Milwaukee!

I LOVED this place! The Sambusas in green sauce were heavenly! The steak and chicken platters were phenomenal. Melt in your mouth tenderness and SO many spices combined to make the most incredible taste. Great prices! Will definitely be back!

My wife and I recently visited and loved it! We both ordered platters that were delicious and full of flavor. The prices were very reasonable and the portion sizes were generous. I had a chai tea with my meal and it was perfect. I can't wait to return.

This place is a must stop when I am on the east side of Milwaukee. I always order the veggie sambosas and basmati rice platter with chicken instead of steak. The food is top notch, different and delicious! Plus, good customer service.

Very good food, and flavorful, my favorite is the rice! It took me a little bit to get use to the goat since im use to traditional caribbean Goat but the food was tasty. The dish was portioned very well, last me about 3 days! I kid you not! I'm a small person and a house hold of 1 so I got a lot of bang for my buck with this meal. Excited to try their salmon

I came with my husband and our friend and everything was incredible. The food was so flavorful and mouth wateringly delicious. The goat platter was one of the best things I've eaten in a while. An amazing value for $8.99. the rice was so good with it too. We got some beef and vegetable sambusas and they were also really tasty. I would definitely come back many more times in the future. The inside is surprisingly welcoming and cozy. It feel homey like I was in a family member's dining room. The colors, decor, and furniture are all comfortable and charming.

The Blue Star Cafe is one of my new favorite spots in Milwaukee. The Somalian food was amazing and cheap! Apparently the owner started cooking in her house and expanded to this location. It's all halal and with the large portion sizes for just $9 it not hard to see why it's so popular with the locals and the college kids. It's just a typical cafe but the food more then makes up for the atmosphere. I will definitely be coming back.

This place might just seem like a little hole in the wall, but it is a Milwaukee hidden gem. The food is just wonderful and is very reasonably priced. You can get a huge sandwich for $6!! The platters are large and filled with rice and meats and are around $9. You can get 2 meals out of both of these easily. They also have some of the best hummus I've ever had. My favorites are the goat platter and the chicken sandwich. Go here! Oh and don't forget to get the homemade watermelon juice, it's magical.

A gem in the town. I have been going here since 2014. Good Somali food. Prices are very reasonable and portion sizes are good. Food is very delicious. Give it a try and you will get hooked. The owners are very humble and nice couple. They add a personal touch to their service. Definitely try the tender goat platter. They charge less and give decent amount of food. No gratuity or service charges either. Leaving a good tip is surely recommended.

Still need to try more of the menu, but the sambusas & the mango juice are so delicious! It’s just around the corner of Brady Street, but you’d be hard-pressed to find other restaurants this tasty and affordable along Brady itself. Big fan.

I ate here for the first time and got the Somali style steak last night and it was absolutely amazing. I was a little skeptical at first because it doesn’t look like much but it was so flavorful and tender. The rice is some of the best rice I’ve ever had. You also MUST get the mango juice. It is so good and so refreshing. I had no idea that I would love Somalian food so much. Honestly, this is some of the best takeout I’ve had in Milwaukee. Will definitely be a regular here.

first: I had the tilapia platter , my partner had the goat platter, we were silent for the first probably ten minutes of eating simply because the food was so good and flavorful it had all of our attention! Now that you know you really gotta try this place: It took me back to home cooked meals that I hadn't had in years. This single plate of food was more flavorful and interesting than probably most meals I've had since moving to Milwaukee. I'm looking forward to going back already.

A 5 star inexpensive East African style restaurant that looks very plain walking in. Friendly fast service. Found this place prior to the show at Shank Hall featuring Kinky Friedman while walking the neighborhood looking for a place to eat. Asked the locals and they happily pointed us to the Blue Star. Took the friendly neighbors advice and got the Tilapia sandwich with the works. I was not real hungry but it was so good I devoured it. My friend Hank the Newzman was along and he had the Tilapia platter with Basmati Rice, some bright vegetables beautifully presented on a paper platter. Also got the Hummus and pitas as a side, all delightful. We are happily stuffed for $25 which included the tip. Hope you get a chance to enjoy!!

I had an out of body experience while trying the Kay Kay and the sambusas. Everything is so flavorful and prepared with care, and also has big portions. Try an ice cold can of vimto to have a sweet treat with your meal! Amazing place, would recommend to anyone!

Blue Star cafe is truly a taste of Somalia 🇸🇴 in Milwaukee (MashaAllah!). I love coming here with my family, and the food is consistently delicious whether we dine in or take out. The owners are very nice and welcoming, and their hospitality is what makes the experience so great. For the food, you can’t go wrong. Always add some chicken or beef sambusa to your order with basbaas on the side…and if you want a real traditional Somali culinary experience, ask for a banana to eat with your rice or pasta dish! Great portions and pricing as well.

Awesome family owned establishment. I've never tried African food before and I was pleasantly surprised! They serve halal meat which I know is held to higher standards than regular meats. This place is the best! The food is really good and so cheap! You can easily get two meals out of the giant sandwiches, especially if you order a samosa or two. Which you should, because they're delicious. My personal favorite is the goat platter. I don't know what they put in that rice, but when you get all the rice, veggies, and meat together it's a perfect bite every time.

I’ve eaten here twice now and both times were delicious. I usually get the beef plate with jasmine rice. The beef is always super soft and flavorful. In addition their sambusas are amazing; flavorful, crust is amazing and perfectly cooked. Everything also comes with a bright green salsa which is not only incredibly spicey, but refreshing and flavorful. Lastly, they are always friendly and quick service.

This is literally some of the best, if not the best food I've had living in Milwaukee. No matter which meat you choose, it is always seasoned and cooked perfectly. I highly recommend the goat. The meat practically melts when you bite into it and the flavor is incredible. Not to mention you get enough meat for an entire meal PLUS enough rice to fill an entire takeout box to the brim. For $10 it is an absolute steal.

Made this account just to leave this review. Truly fantastic. Have had about half the menu thus far and it only seems to get better and better. Service is prompt, you get your food fast, and its super reasonably priced. The food delivers incredible flavors every time. Love this place. Dont be fooled by the quaint appearance, this is one of the best restaurants in the city.

Me and muly husband tried this restaurant for the 1st time (since we are always up for foreign cuisines). Loved the food!! Full of flavors! I am an Indian, so I can say that it is little similar to Indian food, but the spices are toned down, still full of flavors. We ordered goat and rice, sambusa (chicken and veg), pita bread and hummus....Yummmm😍! The staff even gave free desert with the food and that just melted in mouth...I guess it is called bakhlawa, if not then it sure tasted like that😍! A must try place😃!

The food was great with large portions for the price. I ordered the tender goat with half rice half salad and my friend ordered hummus (which was enough for at least 4 as an appetizer!) and they were delicious. It felt like I'm at the owner's home because of their generosity. It's a hidden gem which they could do a better job at marketing. I guess their marketing is word of mouth! I'd definitely return. Don't expect a fancy atmosphere though, it's just simple and clean.

For a modest sized eatery, Blue Star Cafe packs a punch. Genuine Somalian dishes are delicious and in my honest opinion, is conpatible with the American palate. You will be pleased with the generous portions so be prepared to really get stuffed without heartburn. The goat dish is soo tender, scrumptious and flavorful. The pita bread is not like what you would find in other places, as it is pliable soft and airy with a fine crispy outer layer. Also delicious is Star's jalapeno chutney. It is not too spicey but has a wonderful freshness to it. Here, I've come to appreciate chai tea. Recomend to get half rice and half salad with your choice of meats this adds nice dimension to the meal, in terms of the warm and cool interplay between components of the dish. The couple who own and operate Star Cafe serve the meal w genuine friendliness and courtesy - Highly recommend and will definitely come back on next visit to Milwaukee.

I was told this was a place I needed to try after moving into the area recently. I did, and was not disappointed. The tender goat platter was fantastic and the rice they serve with it is just as amazing. Every grain of rice separate from one another, not sticky at all... Not sure how they do it but man is it good. Also, do yourself a favor and get the watermelon juice. That was the Cherry on top of the whole experience

A small almost unnoticeable location that puts out fantastic food. The service can be a bit slow for bigger groups, but its worth the wait. I can't recommend the beef sambusa strongly enough, and all of their platters are delicious and big enough for a couple meals.

The Chicken filet sandwich is hands-down the best Chicken sandwich I've ever had, maybe best sandwich ever. The salmon sandwich comes with the same toppings and is also delicious, just a little different texture. Sambusas are a steal, I like the Chicken more than the beef. This was both mine and my loves first time visiting, the owner was both patient and very helpful. The environment was warm, inviting & clean! The menu was not hard to follow, and our food arrived absolutely fresh, aromatic and delicious! I had a combo of goat, chicken & steak, while my husband had just chicken. Both were served on top of a bed of Basmati Rice with fresh seasoned veggies, and raisins! My apologies, I'm not certain of how to upload the pics, if I figure it out, I’ll edit this post so that I can share! Trust me you while not be sorry! We will be returning very soon! Update: This is after several visits and still, we are always more than satisfied ! Pictured is the mixed plate with chicken, goat and steak on top of flavorful basmati rice w/ mixed veggies and raisins, a steak sandwich & chicken and beef sambusas sure to satisfy! Always fresh and filling!

I found out about this place through a book about Milwaukee. I had never heard of it and I had never had Somalian food before. It is absolutely amazing! My favorite dish is the tilapia with rice. I forego the raisins but others like them. The green sauce has a kick so be careful but luckily it's served on the side! Blue Star Café is an East African restaurant off Brady Street in downtown Milwaukee. A local diamond in the rough! Food: We had a group of 4, and started with the sambusas and humus. Sambusas were very crunchy, and the meat was very flavorful. The humus was off the charts good, sprinkled with seasonings, cucumbers and tomatoes with warm pita bread. I also had their homemade chai tea, which I’d highly recommend. We all had their platters, which all were tons of food, and delicious. Highly recommend getting the crepes as well! All this said, every item we ate was well prepared and delicious. Atmosphere: Deffinitly it’s downfall, it is a very small establishment, very little décor. Maybe not the best for entertaining or what not, but don’t let it deter you from going, as….. Service: Run by a small family, our service was amazing and incredibly friendly. Saying the atmosphere and service was charming doesn’t do it service. My score: 9/10. Honestly, one of the better meals in a while, in a very unassuming yet warm location. Wouldn’t recommend for entertaining or whathaveyou, but the food and charm is well worth a visit.

I may be a bit biased on this review due to the fact that I had been craving non-fried fish for a while, and got to the place hungry, so that's like a ×4 multiplier, but the food (tilapia on a bed of rice plus lettuce, raisins and a mildly spicy green sauce) was, simply put, delicious. Plus a nice, hot chai tea, and a warm and cozy place. Loved it

Real authentic. Flavor with each bite. My family tried Beef with Pasta, goat meat with Kay Kay, chicken with rice and tilapia with rice platters. Huge portions. Kay kay was a real surprise. Price is $9 for any platter. We had sambusa, and it is faaaantastic. Chai was nice as well. The nicest meal we had for quite a while. Rarely do I post a review, but this gem deserves a good one. It is not a fancy place, but the food is really good and well worth it.
