Reviews of Masa Japanese Bistro & Sushi
Don Coomer
Masa Japanese Bistro & Sushi Bar was a delight and enjoyable experience. The décor was modest and the atmosphere was welcoming.
We started with an order of Egg Rolls as an appetizer. The three rolls were a crispy vegetable type with a very enjoyable sweet chili sauce on the side. The egg rolls were a good size, but unfortunately, we had already eaten two before I took a picture. Sorry for the picture of just one roll.
My wife had a Bento Box with shrimp Teriyaki. The Bento box was served with tempura, steamed rice, gyoza (wonton wrappers stuffed with pork and cabbage), California Sushi, soup, and a house dressing. My wife had a choice of either Miso or Hibachi soup. She picked the Hibachi soup which was awesome. The house salad arrived with a very good ginger dressing. My wife enjoyed all of this very much. She stated it all was very flavorful. The Bento box serving was fairly large, plan on getting a to-go box.
I had one of the Teriyaki Dishes with chicken and New York steak. The dish was served with steamed rice and a house salad. Like my wife I also had a choice of either Miso or Hibachi soup. I also enjoyed the Hibachi soup, too. The servings of rice, salad, and soup were a nice size. My Teriyaki dish arrived with various vegetables in a very good Teriyaki sauce. This was one of those dishes you didn't have to look under the vegetables to find the meat. The chicken and beef were good. But, I would have to say the beef was a bit chewy. It wasn't to a point where you thought you could blow bubbles with the beef. You just have to chewy on it a few more moments. This wouldn't stop me from ordering the dish again.
The serving sizes and the value of what you spend make Masa a must-try the next time you're looking for very pleasing Japanese food.

We have been trying new restaurants to support local during quarantine. This was a HIT!!! The lady was hustling to fill carry out orders!!!! She had a good system and we pulled up to hot, ready food. The sushi was great. The rice was tasty and was fresh tasting. Great gyoza set it off. Try this place out, when tasting Japanese, you won’t be disappointed!
austin smith
Very good! the place is clean and very nice looking on the inside as well as having an amazing selection of foods, from rolls to soups 10/10 would recommend!
Elizabeth Pate
Very good selection of sushi rolls and the prices are better than local competitors. We tried the Cajun, Chicago, and yum yum. Staffing was minimal so I could see it being a little slow on a busy night, but when we went on Friday it wasn't too bad.
David Potter
Good for the price. In the years I've been going, they have never been packed. In fact, the most I've experienced is five other tables occupied. Service has always been quick and friendly. Wide selection of rolls, good selection of traditional Japanese meals, and some American as well for those that can't journey past their American taste buds.
Cheri Smith
Great tempura! Bento boxes are delicious and you get enough for 2 meals...5☆
Patrick Haarz
Hands down the Best sushi in town!! Try the Tuna Tataki or Tuna Carapaccio If your into sashimi! Both Amazing!!
Irina Gvozdenko
I love this restaurant so much!! my favorite place!!! very polite people work there!! always very fast and very tasty!
Kyle Murphy
Great sushi very refreshing California Roll. Redbull roll is so good and the Derby roll is amazing
Angela Vanderburg
Great sushi. Always one of my go-tos for sushi.
Kailyn Eastman
Best sushi I've had in the area. The atmosphere is very calm and the staff is very friendly and professional.

I’ve traveled all over the world and can safely say this is the best sushi I’ve had stateside. I’m fortunate enough to have my main office about a half mile down the road and I eat here a LOT. They even gave me my own roll, the Greg roll! This is the type of sushi joint where the sushi chef creates special rolls for the regulars based on what they like. My roll has shrimp tempura, avocado, and cream cheese inside with seared salmon on top with various sauces drizzled on top. It is nothing short of amazing. If you’re wanting hibachi, go someplace else because they don’t have it. But if you’re craving sushi you will not be disappointed. Their bento box lunch specials are also a great choice. It’s a mother and daughter who run the place so service can be a little slow when they’re busy, but it’s all part of the charm. They’ll definitely treat you like family here!
Luanne Tichenor
Quiet atmosphere, fast service, and great food. We love the Yum Yum roll and Spicy Tuna roll!
The crowd definitely picks up in the evening and even with packed house, service is still very prompt!
If you’re looking to skip the crowd definitely go during lunch time. I’ve been several times and there’s hardly ever more than 3-4 people in their eating.
Masa is very easy to find. Located in the heart of Middletown off Shelbyville road. Clean environment. Perfect for families and small kids. Check them out! You won’t be disappointed!

Best sushi in Louisville! The food here is always generous and fresh. This family owned business is warm and welcoming. The decor is understated and casual, so if you are looking for a highly themed experience you might look elsewhere. If you're looking for great sushi and a friendly experience you've found the right place!
Sera Waters
I’ve ordered sushi from this place probably 10 times while being in quarantine - best sushi I’ve had in Louisville! The prices are AMAZING and their salmon is such great quality. Can’t wait to dine in once this virus is gone/under control!
Rachael Sheldon
I almost always have a good experience here. I have only gotten delivery through door dash- but it's always come and been exactly what I hoped for.

I visited Masa Japanese Bistro & Sushi for the first time today... and I LOVED it. It was a small restaurant, tucked away in a strip mall, so I didn't know what to expect. I was craving sushi and tried this place based on a recommendation from my coworker. The inside was clean, and cute. I ordered the Crunch Munch sushi roll and a house salad. The food was AMAZING. The sushi was so fresh and well executed. The ginger dressing on my house salad tastes and looks like it was made from scratch. I can't wait to go back and try more from the menu.
Patrick Kinsella
Masa is a warm and cozy place compared to many Japanese restaurants around. The sushi rolls are excellent and they are of about average proportions. Service is friendly, cleanliness is above average, and we've never had to wait for a table.
Mark McWane
This truly is some of the best and freshest sushi in Louisville. The salmon is just spectacular and you will never find a hand roll in any other Louisville sushi restaurant with such crispness in the seaweed sheets. The owner, John, was trained in Southern California and he runs a fantastic restaurant, and his mother, the hostess, is just a pleasure. The service is excellent and the food just overall is spectacular.
Adrien Kooyman
Some of the freshest and most desirable sushi I have ever tasted. Excellent sushi roll construction with the perfect blend of fresh rice, seafood, vegetables etc. Cleanest sushi I have had within the city limits. When you eat sushi like me though, the price escalates very quickly. Overall very pleased. Will be going back!
Chris Costin
Love their sushi rolls. Pleasant and quick service. Eaten here over a dozen times and it never disappoints. Plenty of free parking and easy to get to from anywhere in Louisville's East End.
Steve and Deb Williams
Our favorite Louisville sushi restaurant! We've tried many types of rolls & sashimi - loved them all - ALWAYS fresh ingredients. The sushi combos are delicious and easy on the budget 'cause you know, sometimes you just gotta have some sushi!
Kyle Ciotti
Favorite sushi restaurant in Louisville. Super fresh, priced very reasonable. Bring a friend and socialize. Get a soup and salad. Sushi is well worth the wait. And, to finish off the dinner with oreo tempura!! :)
Huss R
By far one of the best sushi joints in louisville if not the best. John does great work and you can definately tell he takes pride in his work and the quality/freshness of his food. I have never had one bad experience with his sushi. The only complaint i have is when theyre busy service can be a bit slow. If you love good genuine sushi this is the place to go without a doubt.
Andrew Smith
The food is always delicious here! Give yourself some extra time though. This is not fast food. The staff is always friendly, but I have only ever seen one server at a time. It's worth the wait if you're the kind of person who can handle waiting.
Todd Cook
Great Japanese cuisine! Best ramen in town. The flavors are so dynamic. We always get Ono sashimi and one of the many well crafted rolls ( Lava, Roy, Seaside, Cajun Popper...). They also have some amazing sake choices like the plum or apple.
The only complaint is the amount of time it takes to get everything. Plan for a 2 hour+ dining exexperience.
Brandon Manahan
Went for the first time today and so glad I did! Had the Oshinko (pickled veggies) and Red Bull Roll (spicy crab with seared Angus beef). There were more veggies than expected and they were perfect. The radishes were so good, and that's coming from a non-radish-liking person. But the Red Bull Roll was something special. Perfect sear, perfect amount of sauce, perfect amount of spice. I eat a LOT of sushi and that dude stood out as a definite must-try roll. So do it, go there and try it.
Barbara Wands
Some of the best sushi I have had. The fried calamari isn't cleaned well though, they leave tough tendons in place before breading. Makes for a very chewy experience.
Tree Care Inc.
The highest quality sushi you can buy anywhere in Louisville and not at top dollar pricing. This restaurant is located in a discreet strip mall on the east end of Middle town / Louisville. Its almost hard to eat sushi anywhere else after you have been to Masa and seen what top quality and skill brings to this traditional form of food. John is very welcoming and runs the restaurant full time with his wife and mother. where is the 6 star button!?!?!?
kaitlin peterson
I have been to this restaurant multiple times, and I've always had a very pleasant experience. The sushi is very reasonably priced, and there is a wide selection. I've never tried anything I didn't like!
Jessica Altman
Amazing rolls and a large variety at a reasonable price! Loved their special Red Crunchy Roll!
Adam Raymer
Great food and selection. Restaurant is clean and never usually long wait to get seated. Service takes a while. Also men’s restroom has lock on door that is sketchy and never really sure if it’s locked. Would recommend the Geisha roll.
digitalis303
So-so sushi joint in a strip mall. The service was courteous. The food was okay. The seaweed salad didn't seem especially fresh to me, but that's my only real complaint other than the annoying TVs that were only halfway working.
ERIN STELTER
The food tasted good but they were short staffed and it took a while to get the food. I got a bento box. The sushi was fresh but the hot food in the box was luke warm. This was my first time here so I dont know if this is normal or a one-off occurrence.
Jeremy Von Deylen
Masa is a hidden gem for Sushi and Hibachi in Louisville, I kid you not the Hibachi is not cooked at your table but there is no better in town. The sushi chefs are true artisans, I have tried every sushi place in the city and this is hands down the best.
Spray Insulation Industries
The Food is 10 stars, the problem is they never have enough staff to handle the crowd. You need more sushi makers and servers!!
It’s a shame because you have the best sushi in Louisville.
Veasna Eng
Some of the best tasting Japanese food in town. I always try to bring more of my friends every time to experience the food. Favorite dishes are the green mussels, unadon (eel rice bowl) and the tempura Oreos
Khoa Le
Love this place. John is the best sushi chef in town. They always treat me and my guests as family. The food is always good and the restaurant is clean.
Mark Moore

Nash Willenbrock (Brant the Wagon)
Super amazing experience here, came with three people and got quick, friendly service. And hot food that tasted great and didn’t break the bank. Will be coming back!
Stefanie B.

Great Sushi rolls, actually dipped in a batter then deep fried. Would not recommend the Calamari though.
Frank Daniel
For those with cosmopolitan palettes, Masa’s is a good value for classic Japanese cuisine!
Try their Hamachi and Maguro sushi sets.
Matt Simons
I have only eaten here for lunch (5-6 times) but the Bento Box is quality and yummy and the Sushi Combo C is HUGE for $15 (3 rolls)!
Vanessa Salvato
Delicious, authentic sushi!
Millie Case
Fantastic sushi and the staff is super friendly. My husband and I eat here often and we’re never disappointed.
Chadi Rammal
This place has gotten much better.. good food! Friendly service without a lot of wait time!
Sam Yaney
The food was very good but the place seemed a little understaffed so it was slow. Yakisoba was worth the wait and had a lot of vegetarian options for sushi
Steve Carnes
Great Food, yes, there is a little bit of a wait, more than average, but its worth it, the quality of their Sushi is the best around.
chris green
The sushi here is very good...one of the best places I have had in Louisville. I would definitely recommend.
Allen Bryant

Samantha Reed
Delicious, and excellent customer service. They even gave us a complimentary dessert roll just because this visit!

Although the Hibachi Grill is not in sight the food is great very very reasonably priced considering Hibachi usually cost 35 to $40 per person very clean on the inside upscale No Reservations needed and a very welcoming staff
