Reviews of Choo Choo Grill

This place is a gem. Reasonable prices and a friendly staff. The seating is very limited. My omelet was light with plenty of meat and veggies inside. The sausage Patties had a really good sage taste. The food goes from the griddle to your plate. My food stayed hot until I finished. There were plenty of blueberries in the blueberry pancakes. I added onions to my American fries. I would definitely go back for lunch.

We stopped here for some breakfast before heading home. The place is small and quaint. The atmosphere is inviting. We took the food for take out because I had to go to work. We had the omelette’s. They were delicious. This is a good place to eat. If you want time away from all those corporate greedy restaurants try this place. Small inviting quiet place that makes great food. I would definitely recommend

First off... walking in I was awkwardly stared at. 🤣 Super uncomfortable feeling but after getting passed that it was great. I ordered my food and it was done within 10 minutes. I like that it's cooked right in front of you. I'm not someone who likes horseradish but I figured I'd give it a go. I had the cheddar bacon melt and let's just say..it was well worth the price :)
Thank you for the delicious food!

This place is amazing. The atmosphere of this place is really mesmerizing it’s like entering a time machine. They even have a old school spin dial phone, to take orders. Everyone who comes in knows each other and knows how good the food is. The staff and owner were amazing people. And that’s just the atmosphere of the place. The real GEM is the FOOD!!! There burgers are so juicy and flavorful cooked to order! Hands down the juiciest burger i ever had!! Will definitely be coming back!!

First time in 50yrs to have lunch at Choo Choo Grill. Wish I would have stopped years ago. Would have been a regular lunch stop. Food was fresh and delicious. Service was splendid and conversation around the counter was refreshing and enjoyable. Great place for a friendly, fun conversation and tasty homemade food. Will be back..
Thanks for a relaxing, friendly and delicious lunch.

This was such a unique little placed. We had gone to Grand Rapids to visit my son for the first time and we had time to kill before he got off of work and a man in the parking lot suggested going to the Choo Choo Grill.... so glad we did! Our food was delicious and it was fun to sit at the counter and watch them prepare the food, just like the old days back in the 1950's. Everybody was so friendly, I simply was a very nice experience

As a GR newcomer, I wasn't impressed given the rave reviews. The burgers are mediocre @ best, although they use fresh ground beef. They get a 3 for friendly service & decent shakes. Perhaps that's the appeal.
Sarah G
Food was great! Such a cute little place where you can get a burger made right! Amazing atmosphere and customer service! Definitely will be back!
David Miller
Great little family business! Lived in GR for years and never stopped here. Was in town and gave it a shot on a whim and experienced a great burger and fries and fun conversation with super friendly owners. Will be back.

First time eating here. I wasn't disappointed. From the moment you walk in your greeted with a warm hello and a smile. Small place, limited seating. I felt good putting my contribution to a local restaurant that has been around since 1946 wow! I had the 1/4 lb. burger with fries so good. I was stuffed. Glad I didn't get their 1/2 lb. Special
Andrew DeJong
A hole in the wall stuffed with delicious food and good people. Hadn't ever heard of the place before, but I wanted a good burger and a shake and was not disappointed. Adding this to the short list for sure!
John C
Came here because someone recommended it and it is amazing! This is an amazing lance to come. The owners are throwing down in the grill and dishing out the good vibes. The food is delicious and that at home feeling is priceless! Highly recommend!
Lara LaBryer
Food was ok. Prices were high. Place is kind of dirty. Really its a hole in the wall with regulars and history but outside of that it's a greasy spoon without much to enjoy. I will say they need to take the swastikas out of the floor tiling. I spotted 3 at least.
Hj Jane
I love this place. I have drivin by it several times n finally stopped. You won't be disappointed. Amazing service n fast great breakfast or lunch
Matt Keltner
Small hometown burger joint with great history and food.

This lady can cook she is 1 of the nicest people on earth my favorite breakfast spot try it you'll love it I promise....
Marc Right
I stopped by for lunch with my brother and had a cheeseburger and fries. I enjoyed both. The server didn't ask how I wanted it done so maybe they are all cooked the same amount? I'd prefer more well done, so something to remember next time.
I had a chocolate malt with the meal that was exceptional. It was served with a glass and the mixing container. Very tasty!
Stopped at about 1:30 and the place wasn't super busy. Good to know.
Jason Pulaski
Loved it! Delicious food and hospitable atmosphere. Nice and cozy diner.
Monique Chavers
Having breakfast with my Bro & Sis..The food along with the customer service was excellent!! I'll be back! (In my Arnold Schwarzenegger voice)😁 …

This place is amazing!! It is an iconic Grand Rapids Westside institution!! The burgers are amazing. They also serve breakfast too. Traditional eggs and bacon, french toast and omelets too. There is a lot of history associated with the Choo Choo grill. The building was built in 1924 as the yard office for the Shipman Coal Company and became the Choo Choo grill in 1946. The best way to describe the inside is cozy. It has ten seats at the counter and two booths. Oncd you eat here you will keep coming back. Check out the Choo Choo. You will be glad you did!!
Isaac Dimmer
Simple breakfast served fast! I was the first customer this morning, service is still impeccable. Glad I tried breakfast here. All around great place to eat. Quaint and nostalgic! Thanks!
Samantha Horia
OMG this place is adorable!! Very limited seating inside but that just adds to it's charm. I'm not from Michigan and apparently in this area they like to put olives on burgers. Naturally, I had to try it. It was salty delicious heaven. The people working at the diner were so friendly to the few of us eating that it honestly felt like I was just at their house chowing down in their kitchen. If I'm ever in the area again I'm absolutely eating there.
Colleen Imkamp
We live near the Choo Choo and will go in once in a while. The food is always great in addition to the staff. Though it is small it is always worth the wait!
Jared Haas
Place is homey, people are kind, food is comfort. Great place for a date. Really unique GR family restaurant.
Tommy Haury
Two booths and a counter that seat maybe seven or eight. This place is awesome, if you don’t mind cozy. We got there a little after noon and got one of the tables.
PunkRock101
Love the burgers! Love the atmosphere and love the people you meet. Only been in here a couple times so far, but it's my favorite burger. Takes me back to childhood when my grandma was still around and she used to fry me up a burger. Their malts are amazing also. It's a very tiny place , but when they say big things come in small packages that's definitely Choo Choo! It's been around forever and thats because they have amazing food. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Nick Colson
Family feel and great burgers. The staff is always so friendly. I heard they are a great place for breakfast. The deluxe cheese burger is my go to when I am at the Choo Choo.
Roman Czubatyj
It's one of the best breakfast places. If you are visiting or a local, this is definitely worth the stop

I grew up in Grand Rapids and passed by this place often. Moved to a different area, but still work in Grand Rapids and Choo Choo is always just sitting there waiting for me to come in. My boyfriend and I finally decided it was time. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted not only by Rick (the gentleman behind the counter) but also by a customer who chose to let us know we definitely made the right decision by coming to the Choo Choo Grill! ...boy, was she right. Everyone was talking to everyone like we had all known each other for years (customers and the staff), it was quite an experience. The place is cute inside and filled with lots of things to look at. Very small- but it MAKES the experience! The food itself was great... I didn't hear one bad thing while I was in there. My boyfriend got the 1 lb burger and enjoyed it greatly. Cooked to perfection and was far from dry! I got the turkey and swiss- why can't mine taste as good as theirs?! We left with malts- not a disappointment whatsoever. We will for sure be returning. I highly recommend this place to everyone... give it a try!
sara leach
Vintage burger joint in a cozy & sweet historic building.Very friendly staff move a lot of malteds, meat, and onion rings to a packed room. Fabulous.
FG Eclipse
One of my favorite places to get breakfast. Absolutely delicious every time, and the couple that own it are so friendly and nice. It's really a great atmosphere and the food is like your mom would make.
Zachary Fortney
Got the legend (one pound burger), cooked to desired temp. Great burger!!! Little tight at the bar for a big guy like myself, but totally worth squeezing in for a burger.
cadie Vest
Absolutely loved the little place. It's a little hole in the wall but it has some amazing food and friendly people.
Megan Sands-Somers (Megg's)
Incredible! Great Chef. Great waitresses! Must check it out!
Scott Travis
Five stars a year ago and five stars today. Had the Big Red Caboose special today. I might go for breakfast next Tuesday. And the service is great! If you haven't been there, go!
Andrew Stelter
If you haven't visited in awhile be sure to make it back. "Best burgers on Earth or anywhere else". You're always welcomed with a friendly greeting. All food is homemade and prepared right in front of you. Don't forget to try an old fashioned milkshake or malt, I recommend chocolate PB.
Jeffrey Howlett
This is a great place to eat, lots of variety but everything is prepared with a personal touch and tastes great.
Haley Jacobs
If your looking for an old school american grill, this is the place. For a burger, fries and a milk shake you can't go wrong. I only give it 4 stars because as much as I enjoy the food it is a bit greasy which is to be expected. This is the place to go and always be satisfied.
A DeBoer
I had just gotten out of work , and i wasn't feeling well. But I wanted a real breakfast. I wasn't sure of lingo of what kind of eggs I wanted. But the thought of fresh eggs had been sitting in my mind for couple days. I was satisfied with my food, the service was good. Nice that its a little place, but i can see it being crowded to point where they might have to turn people away. This review was my second time there, but this tome it was Breakfast and i stayed to eat. I'd have a little negative to say, but I took it I was just out of sorts myself that morning. Sorry no photo of food, like i said i wasn't feeling well. Just wanted to eat and enjoy myself after long night of work.
christian topil
Staff is super nice, definitely one of the best burgers in Grand Rapids!
RoseAnn Zarn
Wasn't sure what to expect but very pleasantly surprised. It's cozy, friendly with delicious food. My daughter-in-law was so surprised my 3 yr. Old granddaughter ate all of her grilled cheese which she normally doesn't and their fries were huge and so yummy.
Andy Larson
The boys at the Henchmen House suggested, after a superb hair cut and beard maintainance for my daughter's wedding, that we have lunch at the choo choo grill. They were right! The burgers were the best I've had in decades. The atmosphere was inviting and tight but I laughed pretty hard sharing stories with the Man at the grill, the witty yet outspoken waitress and the Regular. We had a wonderful lunch and a nice time out before the wedding... Thanks
Kendall Nance
I had the Engineer Special- Patty with thousand Island on rye- accompanied with potato salad. Cooked perfectly and Rick and the ladies effortlessly took great care of myself and all the other customers!
Kent Lewis
Tasty breakfast plates and friendly banter with the owner is a bonus for this iconic grill.
Guilherme Sudbrack
It is one of my best burgers restaurant in Grand Rapids. The food taste is exceptional, very homemade feeling, with fresh ingredients. Their shakes go very well with the burgers too. The interior space, although small (two tables + counters), is very cozy. I would just say it's probably not the best place to have a long conversation, as new costumers keep coming. The staff are very nice and funny at times.
Jeff Zona
My daughter and I stopped in on Saturday before checking out Meijer Gardens. Both places are excellent! We both loved our burgers and fries. The workers, I think the owners, are very hospitable. I can’t imagine them having a bad day at work. The walls are covered with anything having to do with trains. Very cool place!
roman Ochoa
Amazing food great service the people there were just the best I will definitely be go back.
A H
Do yourself a favor and get a malt. This place is a classic: small, quaint, fun, greasy (the right amount of grease), and charming.
Thomas Paul
Visited for the first time time today. By far the best burger I have had in years. The staff was so friendly and kind it was just an excellent experience. Highly recommend you try this out asap!!!
Daniel Andrella
Great burgers and service fine. Small venue of course so it can be crowded at times. I love the cheesey mushroom & onion burger melt. Oink 🐷
Chris P
My wife and I had 2 of the best burgers we have ever had. I had the Legend and she had the half pound cheese burger. The burgers were cooked to order and the way you want it. The people there were great and friendly atmosphere.
Gannie Warrington
Small place BIG flavor! When I arrived I was the only one there a few minutes after the place was almost packed. The breakfast was delicious, definitely the best American fries I’ve had crispy buttery goodness. The staff and ambiance is very friendly. Staff is always moving making sure customers are being attended to. Also noticed everything being prepared was fresh not frozen
Carol Canales
Awesome train themed diner! The burgers are phenomenal and the milkshakes are perfect. There's not a ton of seating, so definitely ideal for smaller groups (1-4 people). If I'm in the area and looking for lunch, this is it!!
John Oren
Americana! I love this little place. It has not changed in the 30 yrs I have been coming here.
Christeen Marsh
Small but wonderful! Anyone in town for a visit it's a must!
David Brock
Old school diner in a very cozy building. Not great for me than 4 people and can easily get to capacity but the food is a throw back to the 50's....solid
Cheryl Peterson
No it is not a 4 Star restaurant, but compared to other “burger joints”, this is very good. The atmosphere was fun and it felt like I was back in the 50’s having lunch. It is very small therefore always busy. I had a burger & fries and I would rate both near the top of the list of burgers and fries. My friend had the patty melt and thought it was excellent. If you are looking for fine dining this isn’t the place. If you want a great burger, patty melt etc with fries and or onion rings, this place is worth the stop. Be ready to wait for a table (or counter seat), but I think it is worth the wait.
Michael Katterjohn
Great mom and pop hamburger joint. Small and quaint place where the owners serve you and talk to you. Seats about 16 people max. Good variety of food with a breakfast menu also.
Keith Mann
Been going here for years!!! I’ve had just about every item on the menu! I say about because I’ve never tackled the legend!!!!! I’ve NEVER been disappointed always excellent food and atmosphere!!! Usually a good joke or two from the Owner!😁 worth every penny the best burgers I’ve ever had!!! Take the time say hi to Rick and Kathy and enjoy!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Jonathan Stephens
I almost don't want to tell people this place is small but good food, but if you have a chance check it out. Amazing breakfast and lunch.
Mea Ann
First time here today. I had the cheddar bacon melt with fries & a root beer float. Considering I ate half before I took a picture I’d say it was pretty DELICIOUS! Seriously it was really tasty. The inside is my favorite mix of old decor & retro furniture. They’ve been around since 1946! Prices are super affordable, the staff is friendly, down to earth & I love the high top seating & watching my food being prepared. Awesome experience, awesome food, I will definitely be back.
Jake Brunette
If you want the feel of going to get a burger with your grandpa back in the day this is your place. Old school settings that make you feel like family walking in the door. Food is awesome to top it all off! Can't wait to try the breakfast!
Mark Blashkiw
My wife and I came here yesterday right before close. We split the pound burger, wow. Let me say that again, wow. And the owners are very nice. Mr Owner said they get their meat fresh each morning from a butcher in Hudsonville. I was delighted to heat that. Bring your appetite and get yourself one of the best burgers in town!
Laura Hilaski
Probably the best hamburgers in town. Had a shake done right as well. The service is superior
Marcelo Bornscheuer
We were curious about the place. Some reviews said that they had the best hamburgers on Earth. So, we went there, and it seemed to be kind of a cute, train-themed place. Very small, just a few tables and booths, but enough for a quick bite.
Booth was comfortable, but the whole place was not warm. Maybe in spring or summer it's better.
I tried the 1/2 lb deluxe cheeseburger w/fries. Not particularly tasty, I guess because I asked the burger "well done" (as I always do, everywhere) and maybe they don't use many condiments. The french fries on the side weren't very tasty, either.
I think they use good quality products, but the cook work was sub-par.
I'd try them again, if I'm hungry and far away from other options.
C&J R
I've been eating here with my siblings and dad for nearly 25 years now. If you visit you'll find many of the patrons are life timers as well. Rick and Kathy will make you feel like you stopped by a family member's home for a meal. THE BEST burgers and malts. Although most of us have moved away from the GR area we always have Choo Choo memories to share and stop in anytime we are in the area. If you want excellent greasy spoon food in an old diner setting this is the real deal and not to be missed.
William Simpson
Best burgers you'll have in a million years. The man who cooks the burgers Mr. R Has at least 50 + years experience. He's been cooking at a Cafe since I've been alive and I'm 45 years old that man is a master thank you so much mr. R. I really miss your pancakes and bacon . I can almost still taste them from the old Hopkins Cafe . It was truly a blessing to see you again. You got my phone number if you ever need to call all I ever need anything. God bless
steve bishop
The best place for breakfast and lunch time fresh cooked burgers be sure to sit at the friendly counter and watch them cook your meal.
Joe Murphy
One of the best breakfast spots in the city in my opinion. Very limited seating, but a great atmosphere to interact with your neighbors. Family owned and operated.
Charlie Chapman
This place is the real deal. Best burgers, shakes, and onion rings in Michigan. If you go in at lunchtime be prepared to wait for a seat. I don’t know how many they can serve at a time but the place is REALLY small; and worth the wait. And they’re not open very late either. I guess I’m saying get there early.
Ron Johnson
Very friendly good service very good food
John Rogers
Excellent old time dinner. Burgers are as good as homemade. Good fries, good shakes. The owners or staff are very nice people.
Timothy Garvin
Warning: If you are 6'3" like i am you'll be cramped. But, that said if you enjoy the smell of fresh burgers, fries and onion rings this simple yet cozy train station themed nook diner is the place for you. Luckily i went after lunch rush and found easy seating. Staff went out of their way to be friendly and accomodating. Even an ad hoc side salad was made nicely. (If i were a guinea pig I would have squealed with joy at the large carrot and celery slices). I had a double mushroom swiss melt, onion rings, salad and a SPECTACULAR strawberry malted shake. Sure sure i could fi d something negative to say... but what fun is that? If you live in Grand Rapids a visit to Choo Choo is a MUST!
Kyle Bowen
I had a bacon cheeseburger and it was phenomenal! But that's not what makes this place great, it's the people who work here. Very easy to talk and enjoy lunch at the same time. This was my first time being here but it most certainly won't be my last! You have you try this place if you live in GR or if you are visiting.
Matt Northuis
Cute little restaurant! The food is great and the staff is friendly! Not a ton of room so get there early!! Definitely, will come back!
Bull O'Meara
I had "The Legend" and my wife had the taco salad. I also had the chocolate p.b. malt ( done in tin w/ a frosty glass!). The food here was awesome, juicy and filling! Not a chain mentality nor a chain viewpoint on food quality. The staff and owner were extremely helpful and just the right balance of chatty. This place has been owned by the same family for over 60 years and it shows in the love they show. I hope to be able to become a regular here.
Angela Backstrom
SO SMALL!!
I was amazed that we could even eat inside, but after looking on Yelp, I saw that someone had posted some pictures and sure enough, you can eat inside. We counted and I think it can sit 15 people.
We went for lunch and thankfully got a booth. NOTE: There is no bike rack if you ride your bikes. Our burgers were delicious with fresh toppings. The service was great. I wanted to try a malt but will have to another time. They had big steak fries which were amazing and the onion rings were good too!
About $8-10 a person depending on what you get.
Kurt
Everything is amazing and made to order, a true old school dinner. The seating is limited but definitely worth the wait. If you like good greasy burgers, fries, and onion rings it's hard to find a better place open at lunch and at these prices.
Patricia Meagher
I love going to Choo Choo Grill. I have been going there for about 45 years now.
jessica colter
They have hamburgers. Their food is good. The menu is up above the workers on the wall. It's the old train station I believe. They have a lot of old pictures on the walls. Lots of trains. They have root beer in a frozen mug. That's pretty cool because you can watch the soda freeze 😄 I couldn't finish the food, so a meal is big enough. I say that because some places you go you can order a meal and still be hungry. It's small inside though. They have a counter that everyone sits around and 2 booths. It's right on the corner so getting in and out of the small parking lot can be a wait, depending on how nice the traffic is. But it was good. So if you like hamburgers go check it out 😊
Brad Golden
Even though this diner is the size of a walk in closet, that doesn't mean the food isn't the best. Always heard it was best burger in town, finally tried it and was very impressed. Been family owned and operated for decades, this place really proves it's not the size of the restaurant that makes the quality. The one person working handled the rush better than expected and everybody got food in a very timely fashion.
A Baker
Love this place! The Food is made to order off to the side but you can still watch. The atmosphere is all trains hence the name. Don't leave without trying the Chocolate Peanut Butter malt.. old-fashioned style.
Mike Hewitt
The place is kind of a old time cafe with seats at the counter and a couple of booths. The burgers are great and so are the fries. The help was friendly as well as the other patrons. Not a place for big families or groups. I loved it and will definitely go back!
Timothy Perkins
Awesome tiny grease spot! My favorite place for breakfast. The menu is small and basic, but what they do, they do very well. There is a stream of regulars that banter with the staff and make it a colorful/off-cuff place. There are two booths and the counter so it's not a place for big groups. The place fits 18 customers total, so it is very cozy.
Rita Rosen
The food was great. The drinks were great. The service was great. Lunch time is very busy. They close at 3pm. It's a very small place for regulars. I would eat there again and again. Mom and pop place.
Rob Kirkbride
Quaint diner with amazing food. Both breakfast and lunch are stellar. And if you come in a few times, the friendly owner and excellent staff will remember your name. How often does that happen in this day and age? Breakfasts are big and burgers are bigger. But make sure to leave room for a malt, blended in a vintage Hamilton Beach.
S P
Greetings Rick, I have always wanted to say something, but just too bashful. I eat there about every other month. The large air duct, above the Coke machine needs cleaning desperately. I look every time I eat there, but just doesn’t seem too important. Sorry to say, but makes me wonder what else doesn’t get cleaned with things I can’t see. I really hope that is all. I do regret, I don’t have the funds to eat there more often. The Good Comments, I really like your place . Your quite a personable guy. Kathy is pleasant to talk with also. I Hope your business will last long. Lastly , your food is good too. Wishing much success,
Aaron Merritt
Burgers were large and delicious.
Decor was funny and met the atmosphere, which was great.
Great cooks, server was funny and attentive.
The people all seem to be regulars and the conversation is great for this reason.
Only reason i didn't give food 'excellent' was because I personally think there are better burger buns out there, but that is only a personal opinion. It is a very common bun so I am sure not many share this.
I will be going back regularly.
Lori Owens
If you visit once, it will become your go to place. The burgers are juicy and prepared any way you like. They serve delicious malts and breakfast too. Fun and friendly staff.
Pat Edinger
Had a great lunch there today - I had the "Legend" and my wife had a patty melt. They were both served well, with the appropriate sides and great conversation from the cook and helpers as we sat at the counter. I would recommend the food to anyone interested in great american eats. Had a good time and will try it again for breakfast after Labor Day on a Saturday morning.
Jeremy Marr
Wow. What a great burger! This place is the definition of homey. Great spot for lunch!
Ben Raber
Great food, fast service and friendly people.
The bacon cheddar melt was amazing! The malts were good too.
It’s a tiny place, and very charming and fun. The staff was great with my kids too!
ExHiteknoRN Michael
Amazing burgers!! A packed intersection and it smelled awesome. Came in and got the best burger I've had in a minute!!!! This spot is tucked in and has obviously been talen care of by the excellent exterior painting job!! Awesome burgers again and a shake was kickin!! Thanks for a AWESOME visit
Theresa Edens
We were passing through on our way to the UP when we were lucky enough to come across this gem. The grill was hot, the food was delicious, the server and fellow patrons were unmatched. We ordered breakfast and soaked in the history of the building. There were other customers wearing hats and even jackets representing the Choo Choo Grill. Definitely a very special place. Thank you for having us.
James Moon
They say that they have the best burgers on earth, or anywhere else, and they're absolutely right! I've been coming here since I was a little boy, later, this was our joint to go to lunch when we were skipping school, now it's a treat for my coworkers and I to close shop and make the trip across town to dine here. They have big thick cut steak fries to go with the burgers, and also have awesome choco malts! Breakfast fare is also very good. The place is very small, and very busy at lunch, so go early around 11, or after the lunch rush at 130, but if you have the luxury of wait time, it's worth it. A wonderful historic eating spot all Grand Rapidians should experience.
Courtney Mora
Stopped in for a fish sandwich after work. Didn't realize that it closes at 4pm. It was my first time. I apologized to the lady behind the corner. She was very nice. It's such a cute little place and she told me that they have homemade soups all winter and tomorrow will be clam chowder. I will definitely be back.
Patricia Wheeler
Eat here at least once a week. Good food and good conversations. Rick (the owner/chef) and Cathy our other chef, do a great job. Food is always hot and served fast and with a smile. Try the place ( if you haven't) you'll love it! Sit at the bar, not in the booths. You can get in some very interesting conversations sitting at the bar. 🍔☕🍳🍨🍩🍟👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I walked into the door, with a great friend by my side. They had long, vibrant blonde hair, an easy smile, and the clever mind required to keep thoughtful conversation. We walked into the Choo Choo grill on a warm spring afternoon, city noises humming from around us. The small size of the establishment was remarkable, and it stood in stark contrast to the style and magnitude of the buildings further down the road. As we passed indoors, the smell of a well-seasoned burger establishment wafted in the air. It wasn't hard to understand that we would be in for a treat. We perched ourselves atop the cherry red seats, and looked up to the aged black-and-white lettering which neatly informed us of our options. A duo of middle-aged women milled behind the counter, and we were promptly serviced. A few sips of cool, crisp Coca-Cola later, and we ordered our food. My companion and I were drilled on all the details of our to-be lunch, indicating the level of notable customer service for a fine establishment like the Choo Choo Grill. During our wait, we were greeted by the warm keepsakes and souvenirs that lined the walls. There were newspaper clippings, images of the past, and other novelties upon which we gazed to pass the time. Soon enough, the burgers had come sizzling from the griddle in front of us to our porcelain dishes. Our sandwiches were large, cooked precisely to order, and well endowed. It would be accurate to say that this was far better than any burger created by my father, and quite possibly one of the best burgers in Western Michigan. Our drinks were refreshed part-way through the meal, and we tipped with ease. They deserved it. We left satisfied, fulfilled, and content.

Delicious, affordable, cozy, consistent. Great service, great atmosphere, great food.
Annette Harris
Love it. Nice big hamburgers with big french fries. Homemade malts. Mostly counter seats and two booths.
Update: As of August 5, 2020, they close at 3 PM. But food is as great as ever.
Kyle Marrero
First time being here. Delicious burgers! Food came out quick and the fries were a fairly large size. They serve Barqs root beer in frosted mugs!!. Definitely going back to try their floats.
Vegas baby!!
Kristin Davison
Burgers are so good. It's the perfect diner burger. Quaint little diner feel. Very limited space. I always get my burger to go. It's always awkward when the guy says, "See you tomorrow" when you leave. At first it confused me but then I realized it's just his shtick. I like it better when the woman makes the burgers. She's not as awkward and her food is better.
Harvey Poyntz
Had my first burger here in June 2015.
It's now 2020 and I'm still craving these burgers, all the way over in Australia.
Definately a go-to stop. Not worth driving passed.
Betsy Anders
Really neat and original place. Burgers are classic style and good but not in my opinion worthy of the best in town. Hand spun milkshakes and really good malts again very classic diner fashion. This place is small and there is very limited seating.
Steven Johnson
Always great burgers, the best in Michigan!
Kathy Gray
I love this place! Quality food and great service. Every business should be run like this.
Choo Choo Grill
You see his commitment
on the job each day
Doing what he loves
not just for the pay
His passion shining through
with every burger that he flips
Waitresses share his love
it’s more than just the tips
We discovered them by accident
our car was in repair
Now we’d return each day
since discovering they are there
This little diner by the railroad tracks
you’d always drive right past
Has become a landmark
with a reputation that will last
A place of true integrity
A smile for your day
Their love of life contagious
makes everything okay
Quality is priority
consistently the best
You feel a sense of unity
we all are truly blessed

Favorite diner in town for burgers or breakfast. Small, cozy dining room. Great service and friendly staff. Perfect food every time. Great shakes and malts. Coffee cup is never empty.
April Dawn Dallis
Great food. Awesome owner and cook and friendly people. Very comfy felt like i was at home. Will definitely be a regular place.
Brent Haight
The place needs a little bit of updating on the upholstery it's really wore out. The place is small get there early for you can get a spot. My son and I had the legend, A 1 lb cheeseburger deluxe with steak fries and a chocolate peanut butter shake for a no thrill simple Burger it was delicious only setback I don't think the bun can stand up to the 1 lbs of meat . The staff is friendly if anybody is looking for a great Burger the choo choo Grill is the place to stop and get your meat sweats on
blake mannisto
Was a nice small mom and pop restaurant. The food was okay and the customer service was okay. It was a decent environment. Just drove past it and wanted to try it out.
Farouq Manji
If you want a straightforward, tasty, american cheeseburger this is your place. The burgers are freshly made/grilled, the fries/rings are also freshly deep-fried upon order. The burger itself is exactly what you would expect out of a stalwart burger joint. Filling, tasty, greasy, but no frills or gimmicks.
There is a real community feel at this place, you can tell the same people have been coming for years. They are equally friendly to new-comers though, which I was thankful for.
Overall, good experience. Will satisfy your craving for an old-fashioned cheeseburger any time.
Joseph Boyer
The food was good, and the environment was different. There isn't much room if you want to stay there and eat. They also don't seem to clean very often as there was an old grilled cheese sandwich wedged between the table and wall. And while the meat in the burgers is clearly top-quality, I'm not sure it warrants $5.50 a burger and another $2.50 for fries, or $5 for a BLT (again no sides with that). $8 for burger and fries is the cost at larger places with better products, and you don't expect that from a diner.
Benjamin Aubin
Excellent burger and fries then there is the chocolate peanut butter malt made in a mixer from the 50s. OMG. Amazing. Atmosphere and people are wonderful. A must stop in GR. If you leave hungry it's your own fault.
Jeremy Anderson
Everything thing you could ever hope for in a greasy spoon. Great food and the best malts in GR! There is only seating for about 12 or so people at a time though so it can be challenging if you go with multiple people.
Caitie Bolich
My kids love ChooChoos. They ask to go all the time! Their shakes are huge and amazing! Their burgers and fries are delicious and truly the best in town. The staff, well the staff just makes the grill. I have never been somewhere else like this! Every one in W MI should try Choo Choos!
Joey Velez
I love this place! Rick and Kathy treat everyone like family. The Food, Staff, and Atmosphere makes the Choo Choo my favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids.
Brenda VanWeezel
Never a bad burger! Onion rings are amazing! But the best part are the people that work there. They remember you it's the place where everybody knows your name.
Javon Brown
Had breakfast there this morning (not my first time). I love this place! Small place. However, the food is great & so is the conversation! (Although I never really join in) Lol! The hungry firemans special is my go to... Order it once (all bacon) and you'll see why. Thanks Rick!!
See ya tomorrow
Kevin Bruin
Amazing breakfast and, lunch! I just wish they were open a bit longer so i could eat there everyday. The cooks and servers are amazing people that can hold awesome conversations. I hope this business is around forever!
Tim McCarty
Best burgers in the known universe. Awesome shakes and malts too!
Theresa Powers
A great place for hamburgers and onion rings! No other place in town makes it like them.
Lee Mattei
Everything on the menu is exceptional. But I come for the burgers. Easily Grand Rapids best.
Mike Zenk
Old fashioned dinner. Simple and delicious
Jack Camenga
This is a great breakfast spot. Arrive early, as seating is limited. This is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else, and if it's your first time there you will get to know everyone very quickly! Feels like you're eating with family.
Jacob Van Antwerp
I tried that the first time in my life! For lunch, I tried my usual, and I loved it! This place was finished in 1922, and it has almost always been the same! I wish I were eating there and saw a train come by!
Edit: Please don't call me Jake. I don't like nicknames. Please always call me Jacob.
Liz S
Very happy with our visit. We were treated like regulars in our very first visit. The food was tasty, the malts were great! Service was very prompt but didn't feel rushed. We will definitely be back.
Chris M
Great food, awesome service! They have nice big portions for a decent price. One of my favorite places in grand rapids! Love that's it's small, laid back and family-owned!
Sammy Samuels
Looking for a unique breakfast experience, go to the Choo Choo Grill. I drove past the Choo Choo grill for years. I always wanted to visit. Finally, I went to the Choo Choo Grill for breakfast. The restaurant is tiny. Very few seats. Smallest restaurant around. The food is very good. The atmosphere is authentic. Great place to stop on a cold winter morning in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Doug Finkbeiner
Great place to have a meal- just normal down home food but really good ....HIGHLY recommend it!
They will remember you the second time you go in- many regular customers- everyone is a friend. Try this little gem you won't be disappointed.
Emily Welsh
Best TINY diner in town.
Shelly Lee
THE BEST OLIVE BURGER & ONION RINGS IN TOWN!! Cooked perfectly! This was our choice for our last meal in Grand Rapids. We are North Carolina bound! The train is leaving the station, so to speak! We will see y'all (Cathy & Cindy) when we return for a visit 😉. Choo Choo 🚂! …
KawaiiRafa
Legit one of the best burger places in grand rapids. Burgers made in front of you so you know it's fresh. They take their time. The legend is the way to go
Paul Fitzpatrick
Nicest and most down to earth staff you'll find in Grand Rapids. Combine that with the excellent simple burgers and you get a great experience. Be prepared, there are not a lot of seating options.
Richard Bazen
Great food every time I have been here. They make it right in front of you. It is a great place to get food. Even had lunch with my friend and the owner. We all have the same first name.
Tom Wilcome
Best, best, best in town. Classic burgers.
janette oudbier
I lived on the NE side of town in the Creston area for a long time. Moved away recently, but this was first time I had stop to get a bite to eat at the Choo Choo Grill. So sad I did not stop sooner. Great meal, service and other Choo Choo guest. Will be stopping by again for sure.
Jerry Sullivan
I absolutely LOVE this place! The food is top notch, but what really keeps me coming back is the atmosphere. The staff on hand and fellow customers are all really friendly and outgoing. It's hard to leave this place without sharing some laughs and getting to know someone new.
Ben Chase
For breakfast or lunch, you have to visit this place at least once. It's small, but is an excellent piece of Grand Rapids history. If not for nostalgia's sake, you'll come back for the comfort food.
David Ramones
All aboard to flavor town, this blast from the past has limited seating and no-fuss personnel, the owners take the orders and run the grill - everything cooked to order and served on a cast iron plate. Onion rings were crisp and the prices are fair.
Phloppy Bunny
Okay. Here's the thing about Choo Choo Grill...
Now, on one hand, they serve good food at decent prices, and have good service.
On the other hand... the place is kind of cramped when it comes to size.
It's kind of more like a lunch counter than a true, full diner.
But, the real main negative aspect (to me anyway) is that the woman working behind the counter comes off as kind of a busy body type.
She likes to ask customers things like "So... where you guys headed after here".
I was half inclined to answer "None of your business"... since people where I was born and raised (Philadelphia, PA) are not the types to concern themselves with what others are doing or where they're going all the time.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm sure some would argue that she's just trying to be sociable, or some such spin.
But, for me... when I go out to eat, I don't really desire to have convo with total stangers about anything involving my personal business.
Just saying, that's all. *shrugs shoulders* Not trying to be rude or obnoxious about it.
But again, like I said... good food, and good prices.
So, all in all... I feel that 4 out of 5 stars seems a pretty accurate rating in this case.
Andrew Suneson
Amazing food, cute atmosphere. Best part for me was the chilled-glass rootbeer. It's a lost art that is absolutely amazing and I would recommend Choo Choo Grill to anyone who can go there for food.
KM V
An absolute treasure! The Choo is a legendary and iconic piece of Grand Rapids! Great The staff is genuine and sincere and always remember old faces! The food is amazing; splashed with a touch of the home cooked meal!
Nicholas Ward
If I could give it 10 stars I would. Best burger in town. I love coming in and seeing the regulars as well as the best staff I've ever come across. Stay safe out there.
Brandi Campos
Upon walking in I immediately felt welcome and as if i was a regular. I liked being able to see the cooking process and how the food was being handled. Lastly it was very delicious and would highly recommend.
Flying Dutchmen
Very small diner style restaurant with the greatest staff. Excellent food and fantastic people, and the building itself is a piece of train history.
Todd Hill
Never dissatisfied. The classic burger deluxe with a chocolate malt. Nobody does it better.
For those of you who know the difference between a chocolate shake and a chocolate malt, this is where you need to go. These people know the difference.
They serve up the classic "greasy spoon" all-beef patty deluxe with fresh fried peices of potato that were spuds only moments ago, as it was originally envisioned before the nanny state decided to take the fun out of a burger and fries.
As simple as it sounds, this burger, fries and chocolate malt combo is the flavor equivalent of a time machine. Taking you back to when you were young and ate food just because you liked it, with no concerns about the threat of the "Triple C". You remember our old friends; calories, cholesterol and cellulite.
Jeff Smalley
This place has the absolute best breakfast in the world. The service is phenomenal. And the atmosphere is unmatched anywhere. I can't say enough good about this place. Try it, you will not be disappointed.
Angie
Tiny place so come prepared to adjust if you have more than 2 people in your party. Great food and fast service. A bit pricier than I'd expect, but not expensive by any means.
Kyle
Not the best burger in town but definitely good. The place has a great old school charm and the staff is friendly. The malts here are great. Definitely worth trying this place
Sandra Otte
The prices are very reasonable with serving sizes giving plenty to eat.
Jeff Williamson
HA....lov this place! super small but you will definitely have more than "just food" here...Just go and you will see what I mean....great food/fun experience...:)
Tom Broughton
this is a favorite place for my wife and me to go for a great olive burger (for me) and a great taco salad for my wife. A most pleasant place to spend and hour, feel like family!
Callee Knoll
Going to Choo Choo is a little like going back in time. Everybody knows your name and treats you like family. The food is some of the best diner food you'll get in GR. And the old school aesthetic is authentic. They haven't changed much in 20 years...and that's what we love about it. A must try for locals and out of towners alike.
Ian Lucas
Amazing spot with amazing food, i havent been there in years, but i was instantly recognised like an old friend. Will go again.
Myra Ellis
Great place. Friendly people. Great prices It's a must visit if your in Grand Rapids
Thanks for the hospitality
Myra and Darrell

The food is just ok but the menu prices are SOOOOOOO much different then what they are online they say that Google is to blame but thats a crock of S*#t, I was expecting a much lower price thanks to the online prices then once I order the prices are $2.00 more I give it a 3.0 out of 5 rating but it would diffidently be 4.5 if they would fix there prices!!!! I could cook way better burgers with seasoning and fries for $21 bucks what a let down
Jenna AW
Burgers were great! Probably the best in GR. The owner was so kind. We will be back!
Kayla Miller
Hands down, the best burger in Grand Rapids. Not only that, but the owners and workers are so very nice and welcoming. Highly recommend it and will definitely be back!

Lance Hickey
Fantastic breakfast & lunch served up by a wise cracking cook and excellent crew. Try the Meatloaf omlette for breakfast. (before 11AM) 😆 lots of regulars ad to the "flavor" of this local GEM! …
Elva Dougherty
My Husband and i went and Loved the Food and Pleasant Atmosphere When Leaving Our Jimmy Wouldn't Start The Owner came out to help us get it started it wouldn't start so He kindly called us a Wrecker to get us and Jimmy home as our starter went out We had not been there in ages But We Definitely will Again the Food was Perfect and So was the Staff there so 5 🌟 to Them
Chris B.
I recently moved into the area and thought choo choo grill was a chinese restaurant until someone told me otherwise. I decided to try them out one day and have to say that their food was very good. The staff was very nice and we had a good conversation. I ate a half pound burger with fries and it was more than enough to fill me up. If you like Mr. Burger or the Old Mr. Fables then you will definitely like Choo Choo's. The place is much smaller than these other restaurants but it gives it a unique and much more personalized feel. I learned that they have been in the same location since 1957 and that they are kind of a historical landmark in a way.
Mr CAPONE
Best place to eat burgers just wish they stuck to one delivery app like DoorDash or Grubhub, since covid hit I don’t trust dining in that much I would order every other day will give 5 stars once they have a good delivery set up
Sean Dine
Awesome burgers! A very cozy restaurants that is a Grand Rapids classic, make sure to order a shake with your food, you will not leave hungry!
John Mark Becker
As an international celebrity and culturally significant meme, I enjoy a good burger for breakfast from time to time. Without a doubt, the best olive burger at 7 AM in Grand Rapids comes from the Choo Choo Grill.
Ultimate Touch Cleaning
I thought these little diners were extinct, but here’s one right on Leonard Street!
Step back into 1970 when you walk in the door- everything is what you’d expect, from spinning bar stools to open grill.
Thankfully they do accept credit cards, so don’t hesitate to drop in.
Rochelle Eckmyre
