Amazing experience in this place. Bartender, and waiters ALWAYS happy and ready to help ( if you are going, ask for Alex he is awesome). If you like to drink start with a Sake Bomb. I’ll come back soon. Love it!

I really liked the calming, quiet atmosphere. There were walls that were huge murals based on japanese culture. My shrimp tempura was awesome, the white rice was great. My mom ordered pulled pork, which was also very good. 10/10 would recommend. Although, they use the same fryer for food and seafood. So people with seafood allergens, either dont go, or order something that's not fried, which not hard. I still would like to go for lunch again tho.

Dinner last night was as perfect! The spicy edamame was the perfect start! We shared 4 sushi rolls: knock out crab, surf & turf & two more I can’t recall:). Everything was delicious. My friend has a gluten allergy and they were wonderfully accommodating. Parking is scarce in the area… but there is an adjoining ramp and the validate your ticket so its free! Is you are looking for some of the best sushi in town- give it a try!

I stopped in over the noon hour on Thursday. Such a great lunch spot downtown. I ordered the salmon bento box, and the salmon was cooked perfectly. So delicious! Great service here too. Would highly recommend.

I've basically eaten everything here but this last time I got a noodle dish and it is exactly how I remember my mom making it! The flavors brought back such good memories that I go back every time I'm in Des Moines. Service is always on point, too! And the restaurant is clean with good ambience. Highly recommend!

The service is phenomenal. The waiter was friendly, engaging, and attentive. He made several recommendations and we enjoyed them all. We ordered 2 appetizers, the muscles and tofu. Both were amazing. I'm not a huge fan of tofu but the fried tofu was so light and fluffy it melted in my mouth. We ordered 6 rolls to share. I don't remember each one but I loved them all. If you love sushi and attentive service, this is the place to go. Looking forward to my next trip. 🙂

Legit Japanese food in the middle of Iowa. Everything we had was delicious. The sushi we got to share was some of the freshest nigiri I have had in Iowa. I also had the Yaki Niku bowl (pictured) that was more food than I bargained for! Service was excellent and will returning ASAP as soon as I am in Des Moines again. If you have a love affair with Japanese food, this is a must-go in the area.

I like this place. The space is nice and chill. Everything sits under dim blue light. Plenty of tables and booths. A sushi counter too. I got the katsu don and it was good. The sauce was very nice and the rice, vegetables, and pork cutlet were generous. We also split a Fiji roll and an Iowa themed roll with pork. The Iowa roll was good with soy sauce especially, but the Fiji was great. The cream cheese combined with the spicy elements reminded me of spicy nacho cheese in the best way. I can see favoriting that one. The miso soup was really good too and the perfect temp. We also got the edamame and some kara-age and both were tasty. The service was friendly but kinda slow. Drinks to desert took forever and was kinda disjointed. Not sure if there were issues in the kitchen or if our guy was just having an off night but it was a bummer. I was gonna order a kaji roll on the way out but didn't because I was afraid it was gonna take another 20 minutes to get it and pay for it. We're looking forward to going back and trying out some of the other dishes soon. I definitely recommend if you like Japanese food and a chill place.

First time to the restaurant on a date night and we were treated extremely well. The Akebono team member Nick was very helpful and took a perfect approach to our first visit and personal Sashimi recommendations. Everything from the miso soup, salad, and the fantastic pork dumplings. Followed by the Surf N Turf Sashimi tailored to personal dietary restrictions. 5 stars? I'd double it.

Probably the best sushi I’ve ever had! There is a complimentary miso soup for every guest. And their service is top of the notch! Agedashi tofu, Surf and Turf, bacon sushi, and chicken katsu donburi are the best stuff I had earlier.

We went on a Thursday night, wasn’t to busy so we didn’t have to wait for a table. Sushi was amazing! Also got some edamame which was probably the best I’ve ever had. And some chicken yakisoba which was also great! Our server was very tentative and talkative. Fun environment. And great food! Definitely worth a try. Only downside is parking. It’s downtown so to be expected. There is street parking right in front of the building if you’re lucky or plenty of parking garages near by.

First timer. Let's just say. I'm coming back again. And again and again. I'm not one of those screaming off the top of the roof that I love sushi people. Just a normal dude who likes to try new things. All of the dishes and drinks were delicious with tonnnnnns of options on the menu. Give it a go if you're a fan.

Me and my girlfriend ate here every Thursday for 11 months until we moved for college. Almost 50 times!!! The best sushi in town for the price. Fiji Roll is a must, along w tofu fries, crab Puffs and literally anything else on the menu. Come here don't go to the other sushi places. This place is best, trust me, I've tried them all.

Really solid ramen and great sushi. The lunch and dinners come with salad and soup, even if you're getting soup, which I'm honestly fine with. The service, both times I've recently been, has been ok, but not great. One server had like, no personality. The other server wasn't a drinker, but was unable and unwilling to speak on customer preferences on sake. I'd like a bit more expertise from my server, especially when I ask specifically.

I am not a sushi guy by all means; however, my friends are. They guys accommodated my meal and cooked up some crab into my roles. It was delicious by all means. All the other food that friends got, looked extremely well prepared and presented. I am yet to hear anything bad about this place. Worth a try.

This is my fourth visit to Akebono, and despite high expectations, they continue to exceed them! If you ask really nicely, and it's slow, they'll just make you some things they recommend. MAKE SURE you get their Japanese Mackerel. I would have a picture here, but I ate it too fast. It's just amazing. The nigiri is smooth, not at all fishy, and melts in your mouth. The fried parts are salty and crunchy. And the sauce on the side is the perfect complement to it all. You cannot go wrong here. I've eaten at least a taste of everything on their menu, and nothing has disappointed me. I travel for work and love sushi. I've eaten sushi all over the country - and in Europe, though sadly never in Japan - and this is the second-best sushi I've ever had, behind only Sushi Ran in Sausalito, CA. But Sushi Ran wasn't as enjoyable of an experience as Akebono. I cannot recommend them enough.

What a very gastronomic experience it was! Super duper yummy hi-yah rahmen! 😋 It was rich with flavor. I am not sure if there was that kim-chi falvoring i tasted, but it was good. Loved it! This is a must try on this restaurant. I was hesitant to go for dessert coz i was so full, but that fried cheesecake w/ ice cream sounded very tempting. My husband went ahead and order and it was heaven. Its a combination of crispiness, softness, warm, cold and sweetness! Ahhhh, it was heaven! So when you come to this place, please reserve a space for this dessert. Its a winner! I would definitely recommend this to friends and family

There are better sushi joints in Des Moines (Wasabi Tao, Sakari) but i'd still check this place out if you haven't been yet. Right in the middle of the city and a pretty chill space as well. My friend's sister Sara C. also gave me great service here one time.

My favorite sushi place is Des Moines for sure. The Oh Snap and Malibu Crunch roles are amazing! Great smaller and quite sushi joint. Staff were very friendly and engaging and the place has a great atmosphere that is very chill. Prices are reasonable (for sushi of course). They have some offerings for those who don't enjoy sushi and a full bar as well.

We had Nick as our server. The service was very quick, friendly, and personable. As we were about to order, Nick asked what we liked for ingredients in sushi and he actually went and chose two rolls for us based on our descriptions. I also ordered a bowl of Ramen. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Every single member of staff was kind and helpful, and the service was timely without being intrusive. The food was amazing; honestly the best quality sushi I've had since leaving the west coast. And in much larger serving sizes than I've had elsewhere in the metro area. My husband uses a wheelchair, and I want to call out that the staff were really great about accommodating that. When making the reservation they repeated back to me that we would need an accessible table, and one of the staff members literally ran to help open the doors for us when we arrived.

This place has a variety of amazing flavors my favorite is the surf and turf which should be every newbie's introduction. The salad is always fresh with a real crunch in every bite. The only downside is I wish they had a larger space. The food and service is always top notch

Just had our first experience here. We came in at an odd time between lunch and dinner which can be risky. Still had great service and made to order meal. Derek, our waiter, was excellent and provided us with useful tips on specials. I appreciated having a list posted of what had just been flown in fresh so we could order accordingly. Sushi was top notch. Menu had traditional offerings but also many creative pairings. Delicious miso soup and small side salad with tasty ginger dressing came with the meal. Interior aesthetic was clean and welcoming. Looking forward to going back.

Absolutely fantastic. Our server (Nick) recommended us the rising sun roll, which is probably the best thing I have ever tasted. We also had the Godzilla roll (which was great) and the seared scallops. The scallops were served with a delicious and light ginger and cauliflower puree. On top of all that, the bill was only $30. Fantastic service and wonderful food. I would rate higher if I could.

This place is great! The sushi is fantastic and served artistically on a slate slab! The atmosphere allows for all walks of life to dine here. You could just casually walk in before a night out on Court Avenue, or meeting there for business. The server's are kind and knowledgeable about their products.

Have visited this restaurant several times. There sushi is good, but wouldn't be a raving fan by any means. There staff always seems to be slightly behind the ball too which for what you are paying you would expect more. For example, we had to wait like 10 minutes to get small plates as they were all out of them and waiting for them to come out of the washer... There Saki bombs are less than desirable on presentation too.

I went here with my family after our usual restaurants were closed, we weren't expecting much so when we got delicious sushi and literally the best service I have ever received it was a pleasant surprise. And boy can I not compliment this place enough. It is delicious sushi and other food and drink with the nicest and funniest wait staff.

This is seriously the single best sushi joint in all of Iowa. This is not taking into consideration of price (which is cheaper than almost any other sushi place). The service is great, people are amazing, and if you go with a big enough group you get a complimentary sake bomb if you're lucky. Also an extremely diverse drink menu. I highly, HIGHLY, recommend this place. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

Coworkers and I like to go here a lot during the lunch hour. I have been here for dinner several times, as well. Generally, it's a busy place, due to the location and great food. I would recommend the bento box options for lunch. I would also recommend considering the server's picks on sushi rolls, as well as the chef's special roll that day. Enjoy!

Great sushi and decent prices. I recommend the Malibu Crunch roll. Next visit caused me to edit my review and bump to 5 stars. I had the carb-conscious roll, combo seaweed/squid salad, side salad and miso soup. Everything was prepared and presented to perfection. Service was fast and friendly, and food was delicious.

I liked my Surf and Turf sushi. The presentation was awesome and it was so fulfilling. Akebono is also a beautiful restaurant. My waiter seemed to have had a bad day. He was rude, and his whole demeanor while serving my table just seemed off. That was dissapointing, however, I believe the manager, who was making rounds around the restaurant was very kind and attentive. Went above and beyond to greet all the guests in attendance.

Had a wonderful time with my husband! We were surprised about the price, our bill was under $30 for the two of us. We didn’t buy any alcohol, but we had 3 specialty rolls, salad, miso soup, and hot tea. The specialty rolls were bigger than we expected. Fun atmosphere and our waitress was awesome! The 2 person side booth was a little tight, but that was probably because it’s winter and I had a heavy coat with me. We arrived a little after 6pm and stayed until 7-730pm. It started getting busy an hour after we arrived. One tip, they do parking validation, but make sure you park in the garage right next to Akebono. We parked in another garage a couple blocks down and didn’t know that they don’t validate parking for it. We will definitely be visiting again!

Sushi is not my favorite food, but the person I went with picked out some things that were not fishy. This is a nice venue in downtown Des Moines. We sat outside in the enclosed patio on the sidewalk. Would recommend a trip to try it.

Perfect place for a first date. I even recommend taking a date to the bar, the bartenders have large personalities and can lighten any mood. I have never been let down at Akebono and it remains my all time favorite sushi location in Iowa. My absolute favorite items are the Fiji roll and Akebono style Edamame paired with a hot sake. Have visited Akebono several dozen times. Fantastic sushi. Nice venue and atmosphere. Staff's always on point. The owner, Nam Tran, is a class act and model proprietor who's usually there, either at the sushi bar or circling the room checking on things and greeting people. We followed him over from his original sushi place. We've been Akebono customers ever since. This place clearly enjoys a number of repeat customers like us, which is a testament to its food and operations.

We stopped here on a Saturday evening, and while busy, were able to get seated right away. Our server was helpful and friendly, making for a pleasant ordering experience. The food was also great and came out fairly quickly. Overall the price was good for the amount of food that we got and we had a really fun time.

Generally, I like to come here for the sushi (which is great - top 3 in the metro for sure) but I instead veered off the beaten path and had the Gogi sandwich. Generous portions of steak strips, kimchi, onions, and provolone on a bun. This thing is dripping with flavor and the toppings all melt together to form a 'greater than its parts' sort of whole making each part not overwhelm the others. I'll definitely have it again. Also, it's a good excuse to get their fries which are pretty awesome too.

Ordered takeout from third party sinc I was unable to drive and everything was followed to the tee the last few times with some added Andes chocolates. I put a friends allergies to avocado on the order tonight and the person who put in the order wrote it out on the receipt and clearly made sure to follow the ticket and the specific details we had. I think the rolls are fun, but I especially like to order a few pieces of chef’s choice nigiri and enjoy what’s best that day. However - don’t overlook the ramen. Especially if you’re sad about the lack of good Korean flavors in DsM, the Hi-Ya Ramen with kimchi and Korean style beef short ribs is really delicious. Mom-approved for fighting off a cold.

This is about as good of sushi as you'll get in the Des Moines metro. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. This was my favorite restaurant in town. When I started working in the building, my wallet thinned out. They validate your parking in the attached garage for $1. Sushi is all good, except for their "Iowan" pork rolls. If I don't get sushi, I always get the Sumo Ramen. It's a lovely dish that tastes great and works for any appetite. For drinks, their staple is the mule. For good reason. It's fresh and nuanced. Saki bombs are always fun, too.

FIVE STARS WELL DESERVED. I have nothing negative to say about this place. I was traveling through and I came here because of the good reviews and it's close location to my hotel. For starters, the staff were super friendly and seated us right away. We had the medium order of sashimi, the Nonsense Roll, and the Akebono Roll (spicy). It was happy hour so we also got a half price Oh Snap roll as well. We asked for a side of ponzu sauce (for the sashimi) and the waiter said anything you want! Lol (most places charge 50 cents to a dollar for a side of ponzu.) THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! The quality of the fish was great and everything was full of flavor. The environment was also amazing. The owner apparently likes to offer sake bombs to the entire restaurant. It's your choice if you want to take one and cheers with everyone else, so we had a couple of them. We saved room for dessert and the tempura cheesecake was to die for! I wish I lived closer to this place. I would definitely be a regular!

Great location and ambience, the booths and their open quality offering both privacy and airy ness . The service IMPECCABLE, cocktails on point. I had, of all things , the ramen. I know . I know. Ramen is tacky, right ? Wrong! A perfectly balanced bowl of heaven! Lightly seasoned broth stuffed with a generous portion of noodles and topped with a variety of meat and an egg. Totally Japanese and elevated to what you would expect from a restaurant . My companion and I shared a combo sushi as an appetizer . Wonderful! Hey! If you find yourself downtown Des Moines and you are tired of noisy rowdy bars, check this place out! It is an oasis , for sure!

I also had the Hamachi kama (yellow fin neck) and it was good. Different than any I had in that it has a BBQ sauce on it. Service was great, my water had to have been refilled 5 times or more. I sat at the sushi bar and both chefs were pleasant and conversational. Would go back!!!

The tuna and salmon was descent but the unagi and hamachi was top quality sushi. The place is very lively and busy. It has a genuinely good feeling atmosphere. The chefs and service team are like a family and get along well. The paintings in the wall are done by one of the employees. It's a clean and colorful restaurant. Great job Akebono. For example he asked if I wanted a drink besides water I took a second to see if the hosts in my party were drinking alcohol and the waiter just walked away from our table and didn't come back for quite a while.
