Reviews of Spinning J Bakery and Soda Fountain
Regina Blum
Very cute!! We stopped in here after brunch on Mother's day. My mom wanted a milkshake. And I want to come back and eat here (we both do)! They have a very small little eating area probably only sits about 20 people or less. But it's adorable, it feels like you stepped back in time. It would also be nice to come here on a rainy day with a good book and get a slice of pie. Oh the milkshake was amazing!! It even had real wiped cream on top!

This place is a dream come true. Everything is baked in house, bakery items and breads for sandwiches. Breakfast or lunch with pizza on Fridays. The menu is interesting and delicious, with lots of vegetarian options, all made with thoughtful and local ingredients. Sodas and coffees are made in house, and they also have milkshakes! So many delicious choices , I will be back soon. Definitely the best scones and pie in Chicago!
John Pozo
Cozy little spot. Get here early if you want a table!
Great pastries, my top favorite is the sour dough cinnamon bun. My spouse really enjoyed the lemon apricot meringue. Coffee was just as enjoyable.
Great staf and quick service.
Tammy
I visited late morning on a Saturday and there was a long line, but worth the wait. Quaint little place with limited seating, great staff and delicious food. Cherry scones, savory rolls and biscuits were all amazing.
Ewunike Patterson
I ordered a fancy BLT and slice of lemon lavender pie. A touch on the expensive side but both were delicious and I'll definitely be back (when I'm back in Chicago).
George Jackson
This was absolutely, hands down the best breakfast sandwich that I've EVER had. I could taste the love that went into all it! I chose the buttermilk biscuit and I seriously never wanted it to end! The staff are super cute and friendly and the restaurant has a great comforting feeling. My goal is to come back once a week and try EVERYTHING. Dinah the owner made my 1st visit such an incredible experience
Arturo Martinez Jimenez
Marvelous place!!! The food is great and the milkshakes are just amazing. I have been here twice and both times the experience has been great. A spot that I will visit everytime I am in Chicago for sure.
Simon
The food was delicious, and I really enjoyed the quality of everything. I had the toasted bialy sandwich with lox and capers, and a side salad. $7 for a very modestly portioned side salad is on the expensive side if I'm honest, but I had balanced that with the fact that they offered great service and atmosphere.
I had a Thai tea float. Delicious and I couldn't finish it. Next time my girlfriend and I will split a shake.
Persistent Dreams
Delicious and well-made quiche and baked goods. Can be expensive, but for a once-in-a-while treat, it can't be beat. Service is always fast and friendly, but I'm not liking their new policy of making you order at the counter even if you are dining in. They used to have table service and we ate there numerous times after they restarted it post-shutdown. Now I usually take my food to go because if I want to dine-in I want to know if there are tables available before I order. I hate waiting in a long line only to be told there are no seats left. Perhaps they could apply for a sidewalk patio permit to augment the limited seating inside.

Perfect in every way. Whether you need a little pie slice or some old fashioned egg cream, spinning j is a fantastic choice if you’re in the area.
Monica K
Absolutely a lovely place to grab breakfast, pies, or milkshakes.
This place is very inviting, warm, and has lots of character.
Awesome vegetarian breakfast - Poblano Egg Sandwich and Polenta Egg - very good flavors, fresh ingredients, and satisfying.
Great coffee!
Delicious pies!
Also awesome vegetarian lunch! - Beet Reuben Sandwich - beet slaw (not beef) in a fresh bread.
Dan Allen
Voted best pie in the country by Good Morning America. Beautiful little vintage bakery/restaurant. All of the staff and owners are so sweet and friendly. Great food, coffee and especially baked goods.
April Miller
I loved the pie slices and breakfast sandwiches especially on the blue cheese and herb biscuit! Only negative is having, to wait outside for to go orders. Luckly, I dressed for the weather but it was unexpected. Hopefully, they will get a new system for to go orders soon.
Michael Dreger
Okay so. I've rarely been a regular anywhere before (outside of the places I've worked). I also NEVER (and I mean NEVER) ordered quiche from anywhere before this place.
I literally come here 2-3 times (I'm practically invested at this point) a WEEK exclusively for an order of quiche & sausage with a dirty oat milk chai.
The fluffliness of that quiche, while still maintaining a crisp top layer & crust. The rotating flavors. Add the savoryness of the sausage & it's all *chefs kiss*.
Of course the staff are delightful & the 50's diner atmosphere is chill with a light buzz (like me after a good cup of coffee!)
Definitely a place i find myself often & a staple in the community. My number one spot in Chicago for quiche, hands down. (And they just won best pies in the USA so come get a slice!)
George Chen
Good pies (won GMA best pie in USA) and a variety of food items - all very good. The soda fountain is fun, a bit over priced, but IMHO not necessarily better than better than the bottled stuff. Seating is tight so plan your visit accordingly.

I have been going to Spinning J since they opened in 2015 and they have consistently been excellent. Offering a nice selection of baked goods, sandwiches, and fun drinks. It's just a great neighborhood spot!
Sharon Graeber
Great neighborhood spot in the Ukrainian village. We had the spinning J (egg and cheese sandwich) and I had the polenta sandwich (2 slices of polenta with pesto egg and cheese). YUM. It was served SUPER hot. Great food!
Tracee Young
Tiny but cozy dinner/bakery with amazing pies! The s'more pie was the best dessert I've ever had, incredible! The pot pie was ridiculous, fresh ingredients not salty ,think crust but flaky, perfect size and piping hot! Great coffee and unique sodas ,also fresh and delicious.
Greg Riemersma
Best Pies in Chicago! Maybe the world? Every flavor is awesome. I want nothing more than to swim in a pool sized pie from Spinning J.
Jennifer Chan
Captures the essence of the soda fountain era where life seemed much simpler. Good balanced flavors in the savory foods. The toasted homemade rye and sourdough breads that the sandwiches were on extra toasted crisp (almost crouton like) bread.
The soda drinks (I had the passion fruit palmer) and desserts (I had the yuzu cranberry meringue) were tooth achingly sweet. Delicious but too sweet for my taste.
William McCord
Small place but moves quickly. By the time we figured out what we wanted and ordered, we were able to find a seat. Everything was delicious. I had an iced coffee and shared a slice of the Hibiscus Key Lime pie with a friend. Definitely stop by if you're in the neighborhood.
Solana Cumpian
I only gave them 5 stars because 10 wasn't an option. This was honestly the highlight of our Chicago trip. The breakfast sandwiches and bakery items are impeccable (I didn't know an English muffin could be so impressive). The atmosphere was so cool and relaxing. Everything was so clean and staff was amazingly perfect. Friendly, attentive, hardworking. This will be a place that we return to multiple times when we come back to Chicago!
Selcen Yuksel
I called and asked if they had seats for two and they said yes. I drove 20 minutes and they told me they’re take out only. Also, you have to wait outside in the cold for your food.
The s’mores pie was great though!
Crank Fastle
Not a friendly vibe. You need a mask but they sell them for $1 if you need. The hibiscus key lime pie is light, and tasty, with the hibiscus being visible in color but a little too light in taste IMO. Pumpkin pie was good, but might’ve been sitting a while, the crust was a little dry.
Angela Rak
The Thai Iced Tea Milkshake is the best milkshake I have ever tasted. Definitely recommend!
Megan Matthew
Accessibility: No steps to enter.
Order: Place order at counter then find a seat. Printed menus and menus on chalk board located on ground & elevated level.
Majority of seats are standard hight, some seats are bar are elevated.
There are limited tables where a person in a wheelchair could also be seated.
Lighting: during the day it was well light.
Peter Rak
No need to sugarcoat this. The Thai Tea milkshake will change your outlook on life. It is proof that there is a God somewhere. It's like the Gettysburg address of milkshakes. Days like your wedding you will never forget, and the day you first try the Thai Tea milkshake will be one of those days.

Spinning J crushed my dreams today. I was confident after years of practice and adjustments, that I had mastered the art of the perfect tuna melt...and then I tried theirs. From the grilled homemade bread, to the brilliant inclusion of slightly sweet red onions, I had to accept the fact that these guys had me beat. On the plus side I have a new favorite lunch spot on the west side. Terrific bakery, delicious coffee, cozy dining room and friendly staff, absolutely hands down a 5 star destination for a meal or snack.
Patrick Sundlof
I love coming here for a morning sandwich "Smoked Trout Bialy" and am always tempted by the sin of cinnamin rolls. If they are making a pizza of any kind get it as it is specialty item, wish I could get my lady something gluten free but she just has to let me enjoy all the gluten for the both of us.
Adnan Baleh
Nice vibe, great food and super friendly staff. Kinda feels like traveling back in time with all the modern food favorites. We ordered the almond matcha cake, breakfast buiscuit and keylime hibiscus pie. All good choices, definitely recommended.
Jake Hawkesworth
This place is a gem. You walk in and feel taken back to the 1940s, and order up at the counter. The prices are very reasonable (soda, salad and pizza for $10 was the special when we went). The pizza and pies were absolutely amazing. The smores pie was my favorite of the savories, and as for the sodas, they were all so good I couldn't even pick. Our table got grape, lemon, ginger, and Thai tea egg cream. I loved the glasses they came in and that the sodas were not too sweet. It felt like such an event going here! The salad was perfectly dressed and very fresh. The owners are the absolute sweetest. Would recommend, and will definitely be back!
Luke Aguirre
Delicious food here! The hardest part is deciding what to eat. Then try to save room for pie. The bread is phenomenal. Enjoyed the whole experience of diner style with great flavorful food.
I had the tuna melt, which was perfect with the white cheddar and I recommend putting some bacon on it, cause why not? My fiance had the ham and gruyere, which I typically don't like gruyere, but it paired well with the apricot spread and rye bread. Gave it an umami flavor. Really wanted to try the chicken pot pie but they were out. The strawberry rhubarb soda was really refreshing, wish it was a little colder.
The pie flavors were unique and glad I tried the s'mores one and also the key lime hibiscus.
Highly recommended for a casual breakfast or lunch and will definitely got back to try everything I didn't get.
Erin Collard
Cute little bakery. Unique selection of pies, cookies, gelato, quiche. Prices are moderate. There is also a full food menu.
Ben Goldberg
I really like this place in general but they need to change how they take orders. I’ve been waiting in line for 20 minutes just to order and will likely wait longer than that for the food. It’s really inefficient.
Christy Okimoto
The absolute best pies in Chicago. The Key Lime Hibiscus is available year round and is my favorite pie ever. A close second is their chocolate bourbon pecan pie, which is the one in my photos.
Melanie Munsey
I've been coming here for years - it's always busy and there's a reason why. It's super cute inside and their food is awesome. Small menu of breakfast and lunch items along with coffee, sodas, and pies/pastries. My partner and I would always split the quiche and bread pudding specials of the day (they're always vegetarian).
Yaarit David
This place is ridiculously good. Food is amazing, super friendly staff and a very cute cozy vibe. Perfect.
Leon Voskov
I had my doubts about this place, but decided to visit after living close by for a couple years now and never finding the time. Boy am I regretting this decision now. Breakfast sandwiches are super good. Their English muffin is flaky almost like a croissant. It’s definitely not a cheap spot but you’re paying for really high quality food!
Simone Paton
The sweetest retro soda shop tucked in the Humboldt Park area. Amazing Pies, Breakfast Sandwiches & Arnold Palmers.
S S
Great little spot, and loved the black dog gelato and vanilla shake. They also do BYOB mixers if you have a bottle of something at home you just don't know what to do with.
Beatriz Jimenez
It had a 50s vibe down to the employees' dresses.
I had the key lime hibiscus 🌺 pie. It had more of a cheesecake look and texture but it was delicious nonetheless. …
Scott Strand
Super special one-of-a-kind place with superb fresh hand-made bakery and excellent coffee. The toasted buttermilk biscuit with butter and jam is a snack I will come for again and again. Support this rarity!
Eiley Morrison
I was recently introduced to Spinning J a few weeks ago and it’s honestly all I’ve thought about since and I’ve gone back three times. I may have a problem. The location is darling, the food is unbelievable (particularly the pie) and staff is lovely. Pictured below are their classic breakfast sandwiches, a cinnamon roll, key lime hibiscus pie and S’mores pie. A must try!!!
D Moyeno
Good atmosphere, have a good amount of things on the menu. Unfortunately they didn't have Gluten-free options for their baked goods. But the service was very nice.
Lisa Montgomery
congratulations I seen you on TV this morning congrats I will be there before the prices go up✨👍🏾👍🏾😛🥟🥟🥟 job well done Wow Wow 😘🤣🥟👍🏼😛😘👍🏽 …
Isaiah Sarju
One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. I love that they're independent, take their ambiance seriously, and have delicious items for my mouth. That said I think they're a bit overpriced. I would prefer to pay a lil more and remove the gratuity option or pay a lil less and keep it. I'm glad they take care of their employees though. Feels like a welcoming space for all folks

Spinning J Bakery is a very wonderful restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner with your families too. The food and the service is very excellent too.
Jen Ren
This review is only for their pies — I haven’t had any of their other items (but hope to be back soon to try!)
I was struggling to find a place to do a birthday “cake” for people who don’t like cake, and decided to pick up two pies here on my partner’s recommendation. Though the key lime hibiscus pie with blueberry compote was his favorite (and it was delicious but a little too tart for my personal taste), I absolutely loved their cranberry spruce cheesecake that was rotating through. (I was so sad when I stopped by shortly after that first visit to see they were no longer there!) Absolutely delicious, aromatic, inventive, and unforgettable. I thought it might have been weird to have a pine-y flavor/scent, but the spruce oil/infusion worked so well in combination with the tart cranberry and creamy cheesecake body. The crust was fantastically done too.
Cannot recommend Spinning J highly enough, and they were the perfect non-cakes for birthdays! Wish I could stop by on the regular!
Abel R
Always an amazing tasty fresh experience
James Kladis
Amazing local bakery and brunch spot. Very cozy and crazy good pastries and breads
Ryann Dowling
The Strada was very delicious. They have great coffee drinks too. My guy has been going here for years and raves about it. It lives up to the hype. The service was friendly and efficient. I can't wait to try more of the menu.
David Makris
Great stop for breakfast/lunch. Not a huge menu, but they know exactly how to do everything they serve. Can’t wait to come back!
Alejandra Gonzalez
What a wonderful place!!! The pies are to die for, my favorites: s’mores and the hibiscus.
I also had a cinnamon roll and a chai and both were delicious.
Service is great. The vibes and ambiance are incredible. You should visit this place!!
Jessie Hibel
I strongly believe Spinning J has the best quiche you’ll ever have. I’ve tried many a slice of quiche over the years and without a doubt the best one (no matter the flavor) is found here.
Samuel Pirruccello
An incredible journey that ends not quite where it began. The window to the back of house where you can see the staff is so essential to my enjoyment of this place. The food and coffee is so good and dishes are very clean. I LOVE it
Jaime V
Best bakery in the city. They have the most delicious cakes!
loved the guava cheesecake.
Andre Gordillo
Best chicken pot pie in town! Delicious hand- made shakes as well.
Nathaniel Gandy
Fantastic ambiance, great drinks but the food fell slightly short for me to get 5/5
Emily Piff
This is my favorite local bakery/restaurant, I would highly recommend the strata!
Alana with Cannabis
Always love coming here - the key lime hibiscus pie is amazing.
Nikita
Have been really liking coming here. The pastries are delicious. The coffee is good. So far I have liked everything I've tried. New neighborhood breakfast spot for my friends and I.
Edwin Nieves
One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Fresh and tasty. The pie was amazing too! There's always something creative and new to try. I haven't been able to make it to their pizza nights but I definitely want to try. Everyone was friendly abd the service was fast and the food was fresh. Definitely a great addition to Chicago and the neighborhood.
Harry H Luong
Great Bakery/Diner/Soda shop! Amazing Retro decor, was transported back to 1950's. Had Thai Egg Float and Beet Reuben with a slice of Hibiscus Key Lime pie to go. Float was rich and decadent. The bread of the reuben was amazing! The pie sort of melted (left in car for a couple hours) but was still delicious after a short trip to the freezer.
Lisa Brown
Love this place so much. Get the cinnamon roll and the quiche. Oh and the savory roll. Oh yeah and any pie… really any pie. Wow everything is so good just go and order the whole menu! You won’t regret it!
meghan roach
Really awesome old school diner feel. Went on a Friday at 5pm and it was full, but not crowded. Found a seat quickly after ordering but be aware, seating is very limited.
Had the Sicilian cheese pizza and the egg cream Thai soda, a recommendation from the host. Both were amazing.
We took pie and a handcrafted shake to go and when we were leaving at 6pm, the dinner crowd really picked up. None the less the staff were attentive and friendly. Great hidden gem in the area.
Kyle Stoffers
Came in for a casual date a few weeks ago and had a good time. The decor gives a very casual, rustic feel and the staff was appropriately courteous and welcoming. It's counter service and we ordered lattes and some pie which came quickly. The Latte was was great and the pie was delicious! I'm excited to go back to try more of their food!
Maddie Bridge
The line of people waiting every weekend says everything you need to know about this place. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and 3 slices of pie (I'm moving soon and wanted to try them all while I can). I loved the pie. Highly recommend the smores pie!
Carson Chang
The Roasted Poblano & Chipotle Sandwich is easily the best breakfast English Muffin sandwich I've ever had. The strata is also solid. Incredibly flavorful. I'm not entirely sure if they have certain pies more often than others but the Key lime Hibiscus and Gin and Tonic Meringue hit the spot. The people here are also super nice.
Really solid spot all around.
Matthew Gall
First visit and savory food items were solid. But the mango cheesecake...perfection! Need to go back soon for bakery items!
Jorie Moore
The atmosphere is absolutely adorable. The sodas are all great (try the celery!) and I'm a huge fan of their breakfast sandwiches; the poblano is my favourite. The pot pie and quiche are great. I actually rarely get the pie, but all of the kinds I've had have been amazing.
Laura Briz
Pies are great; many lovely flavors. Service is good. Place is small so not a lot of seating but we have never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. We finally tried their Friday pizza and it was awesome, on a focaccia-like crust.
Zach Mariani
Super rude service, but extremely delicious pies and nice counter to eat them at.
John S
The cafe takes great care in turning out high quality products, from the biscuits and jam to the breakfast sandwiches and pies. Like many places in the area, there is a cool hipster indifference to some of the staff but in general this is a fantastic place that is worth a visit whether you are local to the neighborhood or have to travel. Not suitable for groups larger than 4. Ideal for small plates and quick, yet delicious meals.
Anne W
Spinning J is basically one of my favorite places in the entire city. It is the cutest and loveliest bakery. They have amazing pies and delicious sandwiches. Every single baked good that I have tried there has been delicious. They also make all of their own syrups in house so the sodas are always so tasty!
My only wish is that they would start serving ice cream sundaes because that soda fountain is just begging for it!
Everything in here is just so charming.
Ann Smith
My friends & I stayed at an airbnb in Humboldt Park and was looking for a quick and delicious breakfast spot since we didn't have time for a sit down. We came here on Saturday morning around 10 and there was a line, but not too bad.
I ordered the spinning j breakfast sandwich with bacon & decided to get a peach nectarine and cherry crumble pie.
The breakfast sandwich was delicious and it filled me up. My favorite was definitely the pie. It was SO good. I didn't think the flavors would go well together, but they did and I wanted more.
It looks like they switch up the pie flavors, which is pretty cool if you're a regular and like to try everything on the menu.
Kristina Fox
My whole life I alway heard about how incredible my grandmother’s baking was, especially her pie crusts. Being the youngest grandchild I never got to experience it because she wasn’t able to bake as much by the time I came around. I brought home a pie for my dad’s birthday over the summer (strawberry rhubarb) and I have never heard my dad ever say that something compares to my grandmother’s crust. Thank you for giving me an experience that I have alway wanted and most importantly for bringing my dad some joy!
Tyler Small
This bakery is insanely good. I come here quite often (whenever I can) and the scones, pies, and anything with crust is always delicious.
Come in on a Friday after 5 and you'll be in for an amazing Pizza Night special Pizza slice, salad, house made soda, 10 dollars. You won't regret visiting this place.
Reyyan Erguder
Beautiful place to be, with the retro vibe and 40s vintage look! Really good pies and house made sodas, especially the root beer!
Samantha Miller
This is wonderful little spot. It has an old-timey feel. Also, the food and coffee was amazing. I got the egg and aged cheddar breakfast sandwich on a biscuit. The biscuit was homemade and the best biscuit I’ve ever eaten. They also make the English muffins from scratch too. Cute place that I highly recommend.
Dani Poplin
The house made Ginger Lime soda was stellar. Super refreshing and not too sweet. The breakfast sandwich with bacon was exactly what I was craving. The milkshakes are creamy and perfectly sweet. The atmosphere was also great. A nice ambiance.
Meg S
This place is exceptional. As a vegetarian, they have unique options that are tasty (hello Beet Reuben, I love you). Their pies are divine and they are out of a lot of stuff because they are divine. Yea, you heard it here first. This place is popular for good reason. Get there early and eat up!
Mike Loffredo
Best pie I’ve ever had! We got the s'mores pie and it was incredible. The graham cracker crust is amazingly soft and the chocolate filling is perfectly balanced with the roasted marshmallow on top. We will definitely be back!
Dom Powells
Spinning J, oh, how you delight me!
I've visited Spinning J twice, both times on Sunday afternoon. It's pretty small and popular, so there's usually at least a small wait for a table. It's well worth the wait. They always have some fresh and tasty breakfast dish (I got the vegetarian quiche both times) on the specials board and there are plenty of pleasing regular menu items as well.
I plan to have dessert only on my next visit so that I can try some of the delicious pies I've seen.
Kevin Donovan
Everything delicious! From savory to sweet, coffee to shakes, beginning to end -this place is great. The poblano sandwich was great. The ham & gruyere was likely the best I've ever had. Add the hibiscus key lime pie and it's heaven.
Wes Shepherd
Love this place. Staff is ridiculously friendly. The sodas are top notch and unique. And the food is phenomenal. I highly recommend the chicken pot pie. The decor and atmosphere are adorable and as old school as you can get. A Chicago gem, to be sure.
Kayla Macias
I used to frequent this place when I lived nearby. I moved a few years ago, but we recently had pie catered from Spinning J for our wedding and the deliciousness and quality has not changed. Everyone was asking us for Spinning J's address so they could go there for more pie. Dinah was also so easy to work with when coordinating. It honestly was the easiest part of planning the wedding. Thank you!
Kathryn Cervantes
Super cute cafe, loved the vegetarian beet Rueben option.
Meagan
The most adorable! I always get the tuna melt, never disappointed. The breakfast sandwich is also amazing, on that fresh baked-in-house English muffin. Milkshakes & malts are like the best in the city. I take all my out of town visitors here
Yazan Abu Omar
It's been a while since I posted a review, but this place deserves one.
Unbelievable good , cozy ambience and great service !
Austin L. Wright
A very consistent, high quality bakery. The biscuits are great, coffee is fine, and other treats are tasty. The main issues are seating (which is quite limited) and prices (which are 10-15% higher than what I would expect from a place in this location).
J Po
Tiny spot with a hipster vibe. Ordered a chicken pot pie and hibiscus key lime pie with blueberry compote. Both were delicious although the chicken pot pie wasn't as flaky as I prefer. The key lime was light refreshing with a mellowed tartness that I appreciated. Seating is miniscule and people were definitely not mindful of the signs saying don't linger, which could be annoying if we hadn't eventually gotten a booth. Also wasn't impressed by the fact that they added whip cream to the pie automatically and charged me for it. Despite it's drawbacks, I'd recommend for it's comfort food.
Peter O'Mara
Great breakfast and lunch offerings with friendly service. I had the breakfast sandwich on a blue cheese biscuit, which was delicious. My son, ordinarily a carnivore, got the beet Reuben and loved it. The old fashioned sodas were also a big hit.
Alex Nemchak
Simply my favorite breakfast of all time. We had Strata, cappuccino, and peanut butter malt. Everything was so wonderful. Prices seem very cheap for what you get in terms of quality.
Bridget Duffy
Ordered the brandied apricot cheesecake for a holiday to go order and it was delicious, a huge hit with everyone. Definitely would order from here again.
JTA
While Spinning J is a cute space, I thought it was average. My sandwich was adequate and the pie I tried was good but not outstanding. Neither the filling nor the crust were particularly noteworthy. I don’t know that I would return. There are better, more interesting places out there
Jan Jakubowski
Great place for breakfast and some nice atypical drinks, I had a ginger milkshake that was AWESOME.
Amanda Wilson
The shakes and the cookies are delicious. This place is a great addition to the neighborhood. I love it here and the staff is very friendly.
I've seen commuters waiting for the bus come in a grab a glass of water without making a purchase, that exemplifies joining the community.
ashlen beckley
This is my favorite spot in Chicago. It's a block away from my house so I think I go there too often! I have tried almost everything on the menu and everything is phenomenal. Also the staff is incredible and welcoming and warm. You should definitely try spinning J if you haven't yet already!
Malik Purvis
Always a wonderful spot to meet and talk for brunch 😊 …
Fabiola Hungate
Breakfast and lunch limited to a couple of choices. However all the baked goods make up for everything. Great coffee, hot and iced. I can't comment on the shakes because I don't drink those, but they seem to be known by them as well. Cute, small, comfortable place.
Amy Wu
The pies and sodas at this retro place are unique and delicious. You can't go wrong with meringue pies ( their meringue has perfect texture), specifically raspberry lemonade. If the place gets crowded, there is a small bench for 2 outside for enjoying a pastry and beverage.
Rabab Alrayes
The pie was pretty good, unfortunately still closed for dine in so everything has to be take out. Would love to come back and sit to enjoy everything fresh when they are open for dine in again!
Hafsa Siddiqui
Very friendly and cozy place. they're usually out of a lot of things, but the things they do have are good quality. If u want to try the mexican chocolate only get one scoop. It starts getting too spicy after the first few bites. Their chocolate chip cookies aren't as soft as I would like.
Samantha Morrow
The most amazing place! Everything is delicious & such good vibes for dine in or take out!
Regina Alvarez
This cute family owned bakery/restaurant is awesome!! Best biscuits ever!! And the owner/Baker is so nice and helpful!! My son goes there often and I go when ever I'm in Chicago! A must try destination!!
Megan Saunsen
I'm single handedly keeping Spinning J open during the pandemic with my biscuit purchases *alone* (just kidding). This spot is run by truly WONDERFUL people (Dinah is the best!!) and their staff is delightful. I love getting fresh products from them (cookies, matcha cake, breakfast sandwiches) and also their frozen take & bake trays (biscuits & blueberry scones).
Jay Mitchell
Spinning J is cool. While the menu for non-sweets is limited, the offerings are carefully prepared with fresh ingredients and complex yet tasty flavors. The setting is cozy and clean, a bit of a time-warp into the 1930s. Sit at the bakery bar or in a booth and enjoy delicious coffee, teas, light lunch and amazing desserts.
Smiley Luna
Awesome food, beverages, and pies! Welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. It feels very laid back and comforting. I love the s'mores pie and coffee and pizza. The sandwiches are incredible
Rebecca Hanson
Great food, friendly staff, fun atmosphere - all adds up to a great experience! We're always looking for unique places to try when we travel and this gets all the thumbs up from our family. The in-house made food was so fresh and delicious: grilled cheese, blt, chicken pot pie, s'mores pie, and so much more!!
Steffi Johnson
I am a big fan of Spinning J's. It's the perfect local little Soda Shop to have on the corner! Their pastries are unreal.
Menu is good, and they have a lot of specials based on what's in season, but the menu isn't terribly deep. If you're trying to avoid x, y, or z this coming January you might have better luck somewhere else. Still I do love their menu, but I wouldn't mind a salad option on there if I'm not wanting bread (I fully recognize that makes me a bit high maintenance and pretentious, I just feel like you guys would make some amazing non basic salads based on your daily quiche and starta offerings!!)
Staff is above and beyond friendly, the quintessential neighborhood feel. It's a small kitchen so don't pop in if you're in a rush, a hot sandwich order typically takes about 15 to 20 min to come up. But if you're looking for a leisurely time and some great coffee or fancy soda's, BOMB PASTRIES, in a very warm and welcoming environment, you have to go to Spinning J's!
David C
The coffee wasn't that good in my opinion (not very strong) but the pastries were wonderful and the service was friendly. Would definitely recommend it just be ready for a long line!
Elli Sutter
Wow. Do i ever love this place. the strata and quiche and cookies and pastries and pie and ruben are all INCREDIBLE! plotting the right moments to try a pot pie or paneer. the pink walls with large gold stamps of samaras, the pink lotus lanterns and soft globe lighting. Behind the bar looks like an early 1900s chemistry soda fountain lab. and to the staff- yall are always so pleasant AND working so hard. Awesome job. it's such a magical and delicious place!!
Callum O'Donnell
I love Spinning J. Grilled cheese and soup combo with a latte and a soda water. Too easy to have a good time here.
Also, are there better staff/servers in the city?
(there's not, btw.)
Irina S Dimitrov
I call it a bakery because you can buy pies and espresso but it has a bar. So it's a bar-kery? I tried the very big slice of Almond Matcha tea cake with cappucino, and a breakfast sandwich, and i've got to say: the sandwich was small (critical voice: what did i expect for that price?), but it was delicious. Soft on the inside but slightly crunchy on the outside. How do they do that? Not a great place to stay for 2 hours and work because the space is limited and it's not meant to be a working space. 1940's vibe for whoever gets nostalgic. Always great music. One bathroom.
Jasmine S.
This place is pricey for sure but their pies are so good. I used to go their almost every week when I lived close. I usually don't love pies because I don't like crust but their pies have the yummiest crusts. It's 4 starts because it is expensive.
Lauren Herrmann
The best bakery in town! Everything on the menu is great, but I especially love the Thai tea smoothie, quiche, strata, trout bialy, and roast beet ruben.
Jansen Bridge
My favorite spot to go in the neighborhood. Their breakfast muffin is delicious. Always get a slice of pie to-go even though I never want it at the time. But when I get home to eat it with dinner I wish I’d bought more!
Get the pie to-go you’ll thank yourself later.
Dana Dee
Seating is tight (nothing can be done about that...just letting you know). But, the unique dishes were terrific! After devouring my Beet Reuben, I wanted another! Can't wait to go back!
Andrii Varko
Ordered 4 to go sandwiches for my road trip and when time came to consume them, it appeared they were not the ones that I ordered. Called the store to point on the mistake hoping on some kind of a refund or store credit but instead I was told that I received what I paid for (paid correct price for wrong sandwiches) and promise to not make mistakes again which I don't care about since I'm not going to come back. Also ended up not eating those wrongly made sandwiches
Update: After this review was left, I got a call from the shop and received a refund. Wish they did it right away and not after complain online. Changing to 3 start
T Buffo
Adore this place! The cookies are my favorite and drinks too. The atmosphere is so fun and nostalgic. Service always excellent. What do you expect in Humboldt Park...cool awesomeness of course.
Amanda O
Spinning J is my husband and my favorite place in Chicago. Definitely a highlight of Humboldt Park's neighborhood. Also, I am a huge fan of Chicago's food scene, there are so many great places to go. But this one really takes the prize for pie (and I had Bang Bang Pie Shop--another excellent shop--cater my wedding, so I really mean this endorsement!) Hope you try them out and show them some love. I just hope they bring back the raisin roll which was the best I've ever had in any city.
Genevieve Toussaint
Let me tell you how good this bakery is: we live nearby, and my boyfriend had been complaining about his commute to work nonstop and wanting to move soon to be closer to the highway. We discovered this bakery and are obsessed with everything on the menu. A few weeks later, after not hearing him complain but me wanting to be supportive, I said: let’s make a timeline to move. He said “....but....spinning j...” We are no longer moving. Thanks for saving me from moving!!!
tremblaysheri90
That spinning J breakfast sandwich on a buttermilk biscuit was out of this world. Their latte was so velvety and smooth. I loved it. My friend told me to try their handmade sodas. I’ll try it next time.
Will Pomes
Spinning J is an instant classic in Chicago's restaurant landscape: delicious sandwiches, pastries, and sodas mixed in house.
Talia R-K
I am always looking for an excuse to grab a bite at Spinning J. The atmosphere, the people, and the food are all delightful. I am a huge fan of their bialy sandwiches and matcha lattes.
grace esparza
Great service. Excellent food, since a lot of it is made in house. It's cozy and quaint. I would recommend it for those weekend brunchies. Not so great if you have kids in a stroller, since the space is tight.
Nima Shams
It's a d*** good fresh pie any time during the year. Their pies are well worth it! Another gem on one of the best & most underrated food street corners in the city!
Paul Arabie
I've been in this neighborhood long enough to remember when this space was a frame shop and then an art gallery. I'm glad it found its retail legs with Spinning J. A great place to grab a coffee, slice of pie or malted and watch California and Augusta Aves. pass by on soda jerk stool. You can tell the people working here are dedicated to making this place work. They're friendly and focused on the simple things. It's a once a week stop in for me.
Lily C.
I didn't know a simple breakfast sandwich could be so delicious. I also ordered the passionfruit palmer; it was just the right amount of sweetness. Will definitely go back again.
Phil Hammer
Hand crafted sodas and shakes with great staff! Classic ambiance.
D F
It has been a positive experience every time we have gone. The owner is out of this world involved in customer service. I can't say enough about the food, service, & owner! I'll keep going back for all the amazingness ! Thanks all for making the outstanding food & excellent service. Thanks Martha ( I think ) for bringing us such a great place with your wonderful food.
Jordan DeArmon
From the pies, to the milkshakes, to the cinnamon rolls, to the egg sandwich, to the cola's.....SPINNING J DOES EVERYTHING RIGHT! You can not go wrong with anything of your choosing. Enjoy... It's an amazing place with a throw-back vibe!
William Arroyo
Really great homemade food! The only issue is that if you order to-go, you still have to wait in line behind everyone waiting to place an order (average 15-20 min most times) otherwise it'd be 5 stars!
Emily Fuder
Well-kept secret in Humboldt Park! My mom used to talk about this place before I moved here, and the hype was real. Great service, inventive menu, delicious meal, and wonderful ambiance. It’s so fun to sit up by the soda counter!
Sophy Bishop
One of the best BLTs I've ever had. Great atmosphere, friendly staff. Pie of course is the big draw, wish I could have tried more!
Kyle Anderson
BEST PIE IN CITY! The pizza on fridays have become a part of my girlfriend's and my weekly date routine. So good! You're messing up if you choose anywhere else. Happy eating
sue pitkin
I wish this cool place was in my hood; I love the hibiscus tea and the baked goods here. The place is what I imagine lots of restaurants might have looked like in the 20’s and 30’s and because of this it has a really welcoming feel.
Bunny W
Always tasty!! Such a good space to come hang for a bit and enjoy the morning.
Nathan Bilancio
Amazing coffee, baked goods, shakes, pies, sandwiches and more make this retro soda fountain bar turned cafe a must visit for anyone in the Humboldt Park area looking for their new favorite breakfast or brunch spot. Can't wait to go back.

Mmhmmmmm pies, breakfast sandwiches, delicious drinks and a whole lot more pandemic or not. This calms my angry stomach when in need and close. Check out there homemade pie selection, you can thank me later.
Chris Krolczyk
Pie. Gelato. Coffee. 50's decor with a subtle punk edge. So good a place for dessert that I can't remember where my group ate beforehand, and if that's not a recommendation I don't know what is.
Genaro Martínez
I loved the key lime pie and the English muffin.
John Jadkowski
A classique establishment. Came here with my gang and we all drank pop until our whiskers got wet
Mark Guagenti

I hate kitschy stuff, but this place is themed very nicely, and their food and pastries are really great. The staff is nice, and it isn't too busy to pop in on a whim and find a seat.
Emily Jeffries
We got a carryout order of chicken pot pie, saag paneer pie, and peanut butter and jelly pie. All were very good but the saag paneer was my favorite.
Bryce Allen
The saag paneer pot pie is the greatest culinary invention of all time, and brilliantly executed. The sweet pies, cakes, and pastries are also amazing!
Ben Low
It’s honestly soooo good. Everything looks and sounds amazing. I definitely recommend.
