Best mexicain restaurant in town. We tried every other mexicain restaurant and this one was by the far the best one. The service was amazing and the food !!!! 10/10 I would recommend.

Had a girls night out while visiting town. You get chips and salsa to snack on when you first get there and the waiter was quick to get us waters, and take our order when we were ready and kept checkin in on us to make sure we were satisfied and to see if we needed anything. My chicken quesadilla was HUGE with chicken, cheese, peppers, sour cream and guacamole. I had to bring half of it home for a midnight snack as it was so thick and filling I couldn't eat it all in one sitting. All my other friends enjoyed their meals too. I love the paintings and pictures. The Frida kahlo painting in the bathroom is awesome. I hadn't been here in years as I dont live in the area anymore but I would definitely come again.

Absolutely delicious! We were only in Burlington for the day, and so glad we ate here for my birthday dinner! Staff were friendly and attentive, margarita was good, and the food was great! Queso was thick, creamy, and delicious. Chimichanga was also delicious - and huge! I would definitely recommend El Gato for yummy Mexican food and drinks.

Loved El Gato. I must say this restaurant was better than we expected. We were served salsa and chips when we sat down. We had exceptional margaritas followed by a big bowl of soup de Pollo full of shredded chicken. It was 17 degrees out and we were cold. We were full, but managed 2 tacos, shrimp and grilled fish, very good. Next time will get fajitas that looked amazing sizzling by. Cool, casual ambience with Spanish dinner music playing, check it out.

Been here before and enjoyed it. Sat at the bar, it was a good 20!minutes before anyone showed up at all! Another female customer was at the bar and she had a terrible time getting anyone to come out of the kitchen to take her order. I got my own menu from the hostess stand. No one was there. Finally a female bartender showed up but never even asked if I wanted ANYTHING to drink! Kitchen staff delivered my lunch. The food is good here but the service needs improvement!

Was a nice place to eat. Server was mostly on her phone and was preoccupied so we did not even get drink menus. The guy who served us was very nice and friendly and was doing hos best to pick up the slack of the girl sitting people as she would go between having friends come in and chatting to phone. The food was really good and there wasn't a long wait. The guy waiting on us checked in occasionally and was very guest oriented. I would come back and suggest this place to a friend

I think El Gato has the most authentic Mexican food in Vermont. Love the chips & salsa, margarita’s & all the food. Nice friendly staff and it has a great vibe! I want to feel good when I go out for dinner and El Gato is a young happy place to enjoy friends & food! I’ll be back this week with my crew for Wednesday Margarita Day! .

This is one of my favorite places to order from. They have really yummy food, and their margaritas are the best I've had. I ordered out from here multiple times when places were closed during the pandemic. I would love to go and eat there in person, once there are less worries about COVID. It would be a good date night place to try.

Okay - it was okay. Not horrible but definitely not good. I can’t understand why this place was busy… Rice was dry and had no flavor; Beans - straight out of the can. No salsas or garnish sauces with burrito or enchiladas. The waitress was nice - but seemed to be confused when I asked if there was any hot sauces or salsa. Way too expensive for what you get. Don’t recommend and won’t be coming back.

BVT location. Food was tasty but not quite as good as I'd hoped. Carne Asada was tough and not as flavorful. Enchilada fell a little short. The Toastada, however, was spot on and the Tamale was very good. My Margarita was perfect but a bit pricey. A minor detail was that they put us at a small, high table and delivered several plates of food instead of combining them and we had almost no room for drinks, napkins, etc. Service was good but they could have cleared empty plates sooner to give us more room.

It's actually kinda unreasonable how good the food is. Their shrimp special was so good. Spicy crema, fresh veggies and fried shrimp. Fantastic. Their carnitas are also awesome. The wait staff are also really nice and super accommodating. I go like once a week. Can't recommend enough.

Great service, table already set with chips, salsa and a drink when we got there and the food was quick to come out. Margaritas were tasty and only 5.50 on Wednesday! The only thing they can work on is the quality of the meat fillings, they tend to be a bit sub-par.

Margaritas are amazing, salsa is fantastic, chips were pretty good, my one complaint was seeing half of the staff with masks down when I came to pick up my order. It made me very uncomfortable knowing that the staff are perfectly fine with putting their customers at risk so casually. Most likely won't be returning until I know that the staff don't treat masks like cellphones, putting them away when a customer walks in.

El Gato Cantina is a pretty decent Mexican restaurant on Church Street in downtown Burlington, Vermont. They serve tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc. any how you want. Most of the food are spicy, but do have mild sauces at your request. They do serve both, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Their tap system has some decent local beers on as well as domestic beers and Mexican beers. The staff are super friendly. They will do their best to serve you in a timely manner. The place is pretty small and when it's busy, they will put you on a waiting list. Overall, the food, beverages and services are exceptional and you wouldn't be disappointed.

College watering hole with mass quantities of booze and dangerously attractive U of V attendees. Noisy crowd and a wait to be seated this evening. Food is pretty good and generous portions.. we had the nachos and we were almost unable to eat them all between us two. Enchiladas were only okay, the rice and beans were oddly seasoned? Loved the chips and salsa, however!

This was our last meal in Burlington before heading back down state. It did not disappoint. We skipped busy church street and managed to get a table here. It was busy but a bit quieter, which was great because we had a baby with us. Tamales were fantastic and my husband loved his tacos. Best tamales I've had in a long time. Complimentary chips with salsa (all amazing) was wonderful. Staff was great if a little slow at the time for the bill (but it was a very busy weekend). Would definitely go again when we're in town.

Fantastic food, delicious tacos, amazing tequila and margarita selection. Would be 5 stars but the service is just not there at all. Sometimes its okay, usually it's not. Its shame because with a little more detail this place could be off the charts. The dirty menus, tables and long waits makes it 4 stars and not 5. That being said , this place is fantastic and has great food.

I came in here for lunch while I was visiting Burlington. This restaurant is not located too far from the pedestrian only part of Church Street. We happened to come in on a day when there were $5 margaritas, they were good. Our waiter was GREAT, very attentive and he gets two thumbs up. As soon as we sat down, he brought us waters and chips/salsa. Food was fresh, but I'd say it's average Mexican food. Nothing that will knock your socks off, but not bad. Everything came out fairly quickly. I'd definitely come back and eat here again next time in Burlington.

Food was salted too generously. The kitchen crew played music that unfortunately competing with the music playing overhead. The seating by the beautiful window seemed to lack air conditioning so I asked to sit further back in the restaurant. We were then seated by the door the employees use to step out to smoke, which was left ajar so I could smoke too? Overall disappointing. Though my husband said his margarita was fantastic!

The water was very nice but ther was a vere long wait and they messed up my order. I have celiac and I asked for a corn tortia they gave me a flower tortia. They did aplogize and they got me a gluten free tortia fast. If you are alergic to anything be carfull but still yummy.

AMAZING SERVICE! I left my boxed-up leftovers at the restaurant and my waitress ran down Church St so that she could give them to me. I was really touched and I wish I'd tipped her more. I never write reviews, but this interaction really stood out. The food also was wonderful and affordable. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!

I was a little wary going in because of the mixed reviews, but decided to give this place a shot. So glad I did! Everyone at the table loved what they had, which is a rarity for our family. Even my two year loved it. My mom was thrilled with the quality of the steak in the fajitas, and my dad was happy with his vegetarian combo platter too. The spinach quesadilla I had was fantastic, and so was the burrito my husband ordered. I really can't say enough good things about the quality of the food and the service. Will be going back!

Had a great experience here. Place was busy but the service was still great. Tried the 2 taco deal and the food was terrific. Go for the jalapeno infused margarita! Got out of there for under 50 bucks, dinner and drinks for two. Would highly recommend!

Very nice cantina, prices aren't bad, staff are friendly. Make sure if you want a combo of three enchiladas, say combo of three enchiladas. I just said three enchiladas and got screwed pricewise.

Even on a night that had only one wait staff working they were able to stay on top of things. The food was good, the drinks were great, It might've taken longer than I would've liked but as I said only one waiter was there. I still had a great night, I had a great meal, and I had a great night. What more do you want?

Its a decent Mexican place. The best one around here in my opinion. The prices are a bit high for what the food is but the food is of good quality! Just know it's probably going to be around $15 - $18 a head with one light drink. Still recommend for a good cure to your Mexican craving!

impossible to get ahold of on phone or via website. phone goes unanswered and no opp to leave a v/m, web says "too busy right now, back in a it" ... even though the restaurant is CLOSED! 'new' hours not posted anywhere except on the front doot (necessitating a drive into town to learn). food is very good, table service very good ... but management of customer servie = VERY poor. c'mpon Theresa, you can do better.

You cam get a mixed variety of three choices for around $15.00 but unfortunately they we all pretty bland. Our bartender/ server "Sterling" was attentive, but two beers a shot of tequila and dinner ran to $40 plus per person. But it was not busy and a place to eat.

After a few visits I am confident to say that this place has the best pescado taco platter within a day's ride. House margarita's are on point and their revolving drink and food specials keeps the experience new each time. Great music, outdoor seating, and authentic fair priced food. A+

This burrito was delicious and was not what I expected. When I got it, it was in a to-go box and when I opened it up, the burrito was served with a coating of green sauce and cheese *on top of the burrito* with more re-fried beans and dirty rice on the side. The sour cream was also served on the side of the burrito in a plastic container instead of inside the burrito. (On a side note, the beef was briscuit - like pulled pork but beef - not ground beef like I was told. It was still great, just a minor difference of description.) I'm more used to having my burritos plain with no garnishes, which is somewhat of the appeal, since it's cleaner and easier to transport than a big meal while being packed with flavor. It's very weird having to have to eat such a food with forks and knives. All that aside, the burrito was BOMB. The green sauce whatever it was had the perfect kind of Tang. And when I added the sour cream it was Nervana in a Tortilla. It was exactly what I was looking for in a package I wasn't expecting. Five Stars!

I have never had a bad meal at el gato. I don’t eat meat but their vegan tacos are incredible!! My only issue with this place is the service/wait time. I work in the service industry myself and always tend to be more on the patient side when it comes to restaurants but there was no reason to not be seated after 10 mins of arriving at the restaurant. There was not a hostess to be found or anyone to help seat me (as I had reservations for a fairly large party). It’s so disappointing but i love the food so much that I always end up coming back!

El Gato has the best Mexican food in the Burlington area. Great atmosphere and I have yet to have sub par service. I actually prefer the new Essex location, maybe because parking is easier. Food is equally good. I can tell a lot if effort goes into both locations and El Gato is my go to for good Mexican food.

I am not a picky eater and just about likes everything. But I felt the food was bland and does not do justice to its price. The wait time was really long, which was okay for me since I just wanted to spend some time with friends. But I might not go here alone or for a quick bite. Most of my friends did not like it. They might probably give a very harsh review too. I would not recommend it to a friend. However, I only visited the place once so not sure if my experience is a perfect example. But I must add that a friend of mine had a slightly worse experience and was really reluctant to go here. Hope you guys have a better time. And don't worry about the tip, they sort of include that in the bill and gives the option to give more tips as well.. haha...

I know people that really like this place, but frankly I think it's overrated. Pricey for what it is, staff aren't the politest or friendliest, the menu really isn't that big. I think the nastiest thing I ever saw there was outside the building someone going out back with an extremely dirty blue bucket and coming back with a bucket of ice for use in the restaurant. I only really go here when dragged.

My favorite taco place in town. If you don't have a rez on certain nights you'll probably have to wait. All the ingredients are pretty much local. The margaritas are killer. Seriously delicious and seriously strong. My favorite is the birthday boy with jalapeño infused tequila.

Food was actually fairly decent, however, I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning from the Steak/Shrimp fajitas. No way to tell for certain but that seems to be the only common denominator, as I was fine around 7pm when we picked up our food, and within an hour of consumption I was violently ill.

I had a burrito, and it was really good. The only thing I didn't like, was that they slathered it with salsa on top, making it really soggy, and impossible to eat with your hands. I had to use a fork and knife, which was unusual for me, being used to picking up burritos to eat them. Do not get enchiladas though, those are bad.

Okay, so the staff are pretty inconsistent - There's a 50% chance the hostess will ignore you for a few minutes before seating you (my partner and I have been keeping tabs). But the servers are usually helpful and prompt, even on busy nights. Best margs in Burlington for the price, and the food is always consistent.

Probably the best Mexican food in Burlington. It's hard for a Mexican restaurant to do well in Vermont because, well, Vermonters kinda prefer their food bland. I've seen numerous Mexican restaurants come in, trying to be somewhat authentic, and over time either dumb down their flavors to "New England Mexican" levels or just close altogether. El Gato Cantina, so far, has managed to avoid that. I strongly recommend the pozole soup, a pork and hominy soup that is a staple of Mexican and Latin American cuisine. I'd go there just for the pozole alone.

This place has the best Tex-Mex style food in the Burlington area, as far as I've been able to find. Excellent salsa and queso. My favorite entree is the taco combo with the hongos e epazote taco. Several good vegetarian items. Extensive tequila menu. House-made infused liquors. If you like it spicy, ask for the Dead Cat sauce, which is not on the menu. At the Burlington location, parking can be difficult. No lot, street parking only.

I've eaten at all the mexican restaurants in Burlington for the last 10 years. El Gato is the first place that could make a fish taco that was legitimate. They have great salsa and guacamole- not watered down like middle America likes it. And a decent tequila and margarita mix to match. Well done!

Their food was really good , but the service felt rushed and that's okay given the recent reopen procedures for the summer . Their bar taps also weren't functioning so I only had two beers to choose . We will go again later this year and try again

Not the most authentic Mexican food, but neither is any Mexican restaurant in the area. If your in a large group they will only take 3 credit cards. Could be 2. Either ways it can be difficult for groups. Service really depends on who you get, but you'll probably hardly be checked on.

We came on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The chips are thick and crunchy. The salsa is nowhere near spicy. I recommend adding a bunch of the Cholula sauce they have on the table. Makes it way better. I had the taco salad and added carnitas. Fiancé had the El Gato burrito, with a margarita. Nephew had a quesadilla. The taco salad was not what I expected, but yummy and simple. The carnitas are pork morsels with a bit of a char. My nephew was very pleased with the quesadilla. I tried it, and it was good. The burrito was nice. Fiancé liked it, but thought the tortilla was too doughy. Nevertheless, it was good and had a bit of a spice. Last, the service was great. Rebecca served us. She was charming and on point. The drinks and orders were prompt and there were no mistakes.
