Reviews of Cortijo Taqueria
David Doherty
Such an awesome place. The food is absolutely amazing. Fresh and flavorful. Very nice atmosphere, like an old school box car diner, and super friendly staff. Will be going back next time I'm in Burlington.
Paul Vanasse
Great little Latin restaurant. I stopped in for chips, salsa, and a brew. The smoked salsa was great and the service was very friendly. The diner seemed like it was transported from another time with most of the original fixtures.

Went here with my buddy on the last day of his visit to Vermont to cap off his 2 week trip. The retro diner layout felt welcoming upon first walking in. Tables were all full on a Monday evening so we ended up sitting at the bar. For a Mexican restaurant, I was quite surprised the only non-alcoholic Mexican drink they offered was a Mexican coke so, I just drank water. For a starter, I ordered the ceviche and the Tres fish taco plate for my main course. After a long wait, someone from the kitchen finally brought out some food. Unfortunately, it didn’t include the ceviche, nor the rice and beans that the tres taco plate has written underneath on the menu “choice of two sides…” My impression is that the bartender forgot to ask us what our sides were as he claimed that it’s only included if that’s the way it was ordered. Getting over this disappointment, tacos were actually quite good. Toppings were fresh and the fish fried to crispy perfection. I would hardly call these the best fish tacos I’ve had though. Same for the ceviche, which my excitement for this “starter” was discounted based on how long it took to come out of the kitchen. Probably would not come back here for a second try.

Great little taqueria restaurant in an old diner located right off Church Street. The atmosphere is very laid back and the food is delicious. The nachos were very good and everyone enjoyed their tacos. Kids devoured the churros!
Jessica Heberlein
El Cortijo was a great stop for lunch! My boyfriend got the carnitas burrito and I got the chicken enchiladas, we also got salsa/guac/queso and chips and the queso was amazing! I got the caliente margarita and he got a blood orange margarita, and everything was great!
Dani Herzog
This place had some of the most unique and best tacos ever! My favourite was the mushroom one, followed by pork shoulder. I have never had such a unique flavour profile like the mushroom taco and I loved it. It was crunchy, flavourful, creamy, and delicious. I hope I’ll be back one day to taste them again!
Ashley Bennett
Quite literally the best nachos and tacos I’ve ever had in my life. A must eat. Worth the price. We will need to start to eat regular at this place. Even the picky kid was rolling her eyes back in her head.
Steven Starr
Being a life long Texan this is tough to admit, but El Cortijo makes some of the best guacamole I've had. Very authentic. Outstanding margaritas and the best Mexican food served in a 50s diner in Vermont, hands down.
Allison Hey
Good food and good service. Fun atmosphere. I recommend the chicken enchiladas and the spicy marg. It does seem to be a popular place so I would recommend reservations for dinner unless you are ok with bar seating. Bar seating was still full menu.
Heather Sedgeman
Been meaning to try this place for awhile. Cute airstream/diner vibe. Staff was super friendly and kind. Honestly haven't found a lot of good Mexican or ceviche in Burlington. Cortijo has probably the best ceviche we've had in the Burlington area and is right up there with the better Mexican spots here. It's good; I've had better, but not in Burlington. Their chips are fab, thin and fresh tasting as is their queso.
Kimberly N
What a sweet place: the kindest staff, cool atmosphere, and quick service. The vegetarian options are tasty. Portions are ample. Alcohol choices are above average. Definitely worth a visit.
Lisa Marlene
Not authentic, but doesn't mean it's not good. It's got a nice spin on some dishes. But it's not like you tias taco truck you know. I love the service here and the atmosphere. I enjoyed my mean and my drink. Thank you for the great service! ♡♡♡
Lauren Clayter
Friendly staff and our food came out super fast. The burritos were very expensive especially when sour cream, cheese, and other add ons where $1+ extra. There was also not a ton of flavor and the rice was not fully cooked.
Julian Martin
Some of the best tacos we've ever had! Drinks and service were fantastic. Vibe was like a comforting and friendly diner. Lots of character to it, even the hand soap was nice - added a citrusy flavor on top of the tacos. Felt very welcome

I absolutely love Tex-Mex and we have eaten here more than a few times. I feel the effort needs to come back and the portions reconsidered. Margaritas are ALWAYS great.
Amish Bhavsar
We went in for early dinner just at the time they open at 4 pm. We were surprised to see a small group of people line up outside for it to open. Also, they informed us that they have reservations starting at 6 pm, so we had to be quick.
The food was nice overall. Except that that guac was very sour. The quantity of food was ok. The bowl costs $14+ but had less quantity then the Nachos that cost $12+
Overall, the service was prompt and the food was pretty good (except the sour guac).
It seems like it is the only Mexican joint in that area, so it is quite popular, so plan ahead before you go.
Nicole Furlan
The food here was just okay. Not the best. Not the worst. There are probably better and more authentic Mexican restaurants in the area. Portion sizes are pretty small for the price.
Benjamin Gipson
A quaint tex-mex spot tucked away near downtown Burlington. The enchiladas and tacos were a must have as the flavors were exceptional. Plus, filled with a friendly staff that makes it feel like you are one of the locals.
Ian Demarest
Great local spot with awesome margaritas and vegetarian options (tres hermanas, hongos, and berenjena). The last couple of times we visited, Emily was our server and she is incredible. She is always happy to see us and runs a busy restaurant impeccably. It’s Always a quality meal in a comfortable setting.
Christy Dryden
Very busy place for student move-in, but they were able to accommodate us at the bar. Taco options were excellent. I strongly recommend the Tres Hermanas, though we also enjoyed the Pescado, Pollo, and Carnitas. Bartender hit a nice balance of talking with the patrons and giving them their space.
We'll definitely be back when we're in town again.
Valerie Walden
Great taco diner car. Just
go here. You will enjoy it. Get there around 4pm because it will get busy fast as it gets near traditional Ametican dinner time.
Yuvraj Y
A decent place for some good nachos. Not a fan of their tacos tbh. Not an authentic Mexican place, they add their own spin to the dishes which would be a hit and miss for some.
First-rate service for sure.
If you do order the nachos, be prepared to taste a lot of olives. They add their own spin to it; not a fan of the olives but apart from that the nachos are delicious. We literally scraped the plate after removing the olives.
Worth a visit!

Our server was a young lad with a pleasant demeanor and eager to make our experience a good one. He was successful. It was my first visit but my gf had been there before and desperately wanted me to experience the food. All delicious. I highly recommend the queso fundido fries. Delicious! I had a burrito that was huge and delicious. It contained the best chorizo I've had in a long time among other delicious ingredients. My gf had the chicken enchiladas. Also delicious. I highly recommend this place for your Mexican cuisine fix. We were lucky and timed it right as we were seated immediately but I could see the potential for this place to be insanely busy during peak times.
Stephanie Nickles
the corn appetizer is a must get, delicious one of a kind treat. tacos are fresh and have lots of authentic flavors. cheesy fries were alright - fries had a good seasoning on them but If you're not starving, not worth filling up on them
Van Houten
The best time we've had with a bartender, hands down. Glynnis serves up not just the most banging margaritas but good wit and spirit to boot. Go get you some. Daybreak all day long
Peter James
This place had an awesome vibe and the food was delicious, some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. Would highly recommend checking this place out if you’re in Burlington VT.
Varun N
Super cute little Mexican restaurant in Burlington, with a very nice vibe. Ceviche was second to none.
Nathan Miller
Delicious tacos! We got several varieties and were impressed with everything. We were a little disappointed we had to get take-out because we were looking forward to sipping on unique tequilas as well. Another day I suppose. The diner did look quite sharp which made us even more excited to return someday.
Mark Wilkin
Good food but not necessarily for me. Ordered chorizo burrito bowl but was not thrilled with it. Chorizo had very little flavor. Salsas, green and red, we tasty and plentiful. Then again, for $8.95, it should be. Chips seem fresh-fried, which is nice. Refried beans on side were underwhelming and unfortunately cold. Lots of good vegetarian options. Service was excellent. I likely wouldn't come here again but it might be great for others.
Don Dresser
Excellent tacos and salsas, very good beer selection, and well made margaritas. Our server was quite friendly and helpful, and the quality in general was excellent. It can be a bit crowded, but is worth the wait.
James Jansen
at first i was a little unhappy to see the price of a burrito but after one bite of the fish fried burrito i was sold! delicious, great size and very happy we ended up getting take out. would definitely come back when we are back in burlington
Elizaveta Reviakina
Everything we ordered was beyond delicious, quick and with great service. Definitely recommend!
Nore Viewz
Nice menu, good food. The camarones taco was superb. Papas fritas also very good.
Denise Mellia
Fantastic experience! The service was extraordinary, the meal was exceptional, generous portions, delicious food, and great presentation. All of these luxuries for a reasonable price. I'm telling everyone I know to go and enjoy a yummy meal.
Matt Daniel
Can’t rave enough about the food and the service. It was so good. They definitely did south of the border food for being so close to north of the border. Hope this helps!
Mitchell Carter
Good food and good drinks. It was fun sitting in an old diner! The prices were a little steep for what you received.
Mia Dimock
Amazing restaurant in Burlington. my boyfriend had a burrito while I had some tacos. I tried 3, my faves were the pork (carnitas) and the sweet potato one ++++
Harrison Kanarick
Pretty decent Mexican food on church street. Had the chicken quesadillas and some chips and guac. They also have a few beers on tap too.
Kuhlyedascope
Fast and easy. Food is authentic. Water tastes great too Lol.
Komal
Not so great experience! Ordered cheese fries and tacos with side of fried beans and greens. Fish taco had a bit strange smell and fried beans had burnt/spoiled taste.
Aaron Riseman
Fantastic food and margaritas. Had to send back my burrito because I asked for no beans and it still came with beans, but they replaced it and apologized. Only wish the churros were dairy free for my wife. Excellent customer service. Highly recommend
Richard Mekkri
The food here is always incredible! The decor/ambiance is fantastic and the cocktail menu is quite surprising. I prefer knowing what isn't available from the menu before attempting to order items that aren't in stock. However, with that being said, this is always an excellent time.
Cyndy P
5 stars for this queso alone! Had brunch and it was great! Waitstaff was excellent, food was fast and delish. A little pricey but it's Burlington soooo.....
Super vegetarian friendly!
Darren Sparks
Halley was an awesome server. the food was filling and tastefully prepared and presented. Overall just a fun lunch stop and one I will remember for quite a while and I will reccomend it to my friends.
T K
Can only hold off so long before posting.
Couldn't make up my my mind on which of the tacos is best. I think the sausage one.
Diana Nguyen
Came here without reservations and was able to snag seats at the bar. Reservation definitely recommended as this place used to be a diner and is small in size. Had the chips, guac, salsa and hongos tacos (mushrooms). Very well prepared! Also came with two sides, I chose rice and dressed greens.
Moriyuki Hanazawa
Very nice restaurant
Alicia Nichols
Amazing chorizo and sweet potato tacos! Iv never tasted anything like the sweet potato ones and I was in love! Also the Serrano pepper Margo was to die for! Oh and the corn cheese dip! Get that dip!!
Rick Venne
This was my first time going to El Cortijo. I really liked it. I'm not certain what was in the space prior to El Cortijo occupying it but I get the feeling it was some sort of diner. It had that feel and decor. Classic stainless steel walls with a row of booths on the left hand side and a sit down counter with about 7 or 8 spinning padded round seats bolted to the floor.
The joint was hopping as they say, not unexpectedly for a Saturday evening in July on Vermont Brewers Association Brewfest weekend. The 6 of us waited for 45 minutes for a spot but it was worth it. The food looked great and tasted even better. I had the Chorizo burrito and the Camaròn taco (special of the day). Both were delicious but I was particularly impressed with the taco. The shrimp were perfectly grilled and topped with Chipotle crema and avocado pico de gallo, more onion and cilantro. The burrito was fat and filling, I just wish the chorizo was spicier. I had a sip of the margarita my friend ordered, it was killer. I must make sure I'm not the driver next time I go so I can indulge. I highly recommend El Cortijo
ben marcus
I had the wet chicken burrito and it was amazing. The staff was really friendly. Would definitely recommend this
Brian Inman
Long lines but solid Mexican food. I recommend starting off with the trio dip and then order a bowl as your meal. Small little restaurant with tight diner like booths but the food was nothing like a diner.
Bibi Ali
I ordered the fish tacos. The fish was good albeit small. I found their refried beans to be very bland. The service was great.
richard briggs
Don't order the burrito.. Drinks were great . her enchiladas were awesome... I should've ordered that!
Tyler Pendleton
Great enchiladas and margaritas on tap, what more could you ask for!
Mike Bierman
Really cool diner feel. Our server, Meg?, was great. She was hustling, friendly, and serving the entire place. Food was really, really good. Only downside was the blonde bartender. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she should not have been interacting with customers(grumpy, wouldn't say you're welcome or thanks, and let at least 6 customers leave because she wouldn't serve food at the bar). Hope that was just a bad day, because everything else is a definite win!
Bonnie Bloom
First, we really appreciate y'all being open for business and seating and serving patrons. The house-made guacamole with chips was so good I added it onto my meal as well, a very generous portion of the chorizo bowl. The bartender was attentive to the dining process of food and drinks. We really enjoyed the food and dining experience at the end of a long day.
MIGUEL ANGEL PAREDES
It is an excellent place, the attention was pleasant. the tacos really are delicious it was good to visit them. They should only get better in the desserts. my only disappointment were the churros ... the churros are crisp, not raw, very bad taste.
Jill Hampton
Good, but not the best tacos I've ever had. Drinks were okay, I found my Passionfruit margarita very sour (and I'm not someone who likes drinks very sweet). Staff was very friendly and helpful. I would give it another try if I lived in town!
Cathleen Keogh
Food was delicious! Loved sitting at the bar & chatting with the 2 bartenders!
Wished they had their outdoor seating open.
JB Hilferty
What a cool place! The service was amazing. Our server took the time to explain the menu and helped us pick out meals that best meet our preferences. Our meal took a little longer than normal because of a larger party that came in and our server brought out free chips and two different types of their salsa to hold us over. Our meal was delicious! I had ordered a burrito bowl and it came in a wrap. It was really my fault for not specifing. But our server comped us the meal because it wasn't exactly what we asked for. This was done without us even asking!! The entire night was fantastic. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The food was top shelf, great environment, and service that was unmatched. We'll definitely be going back!!
Flore V
Food is really good but service wasn’t great.
Kayla Marie Evelyn
I spent 7 years down in Florida. I now and back up in Upstate New York where I am from. I have been craving "REAL" Mexican food and no I don't mean Taco Bell. This place hit the spot. The food had such a perfect blend of spices! The staff was amazing and so friendly. I will be going back again!
Julia Juarez
It's OK for northern Mexican food but it's not authentic
mikaela irene
I doubt this is authentic Mexican but the tacos are very good. The camote surprisingly was delicious, and the pescado was awesome. Wouldn't recommend the carnitas though.
Tony Hanf
Small place, big flavor! Love their tacos plates, if fact that’s all I’ve ever gotten there because they are SO DELICIOUS. Drinks are good but pricey. Chips and guacamole=always. Their homemade salsa is also bomb and goes well with any dish. Always try to make it there when I’m visiting Burlington.
Amy Lynn
Completely satisfied!! Coconut margaritas do not disappoint!!
Jennifer Fuller
My waitress was really nice informative and patient , I liked the beer she recommended the chips were delicious and the burritos were ok, the service made a lot of the difference I would rat 4 1/2 stars. Love this little go-to and the atmosphere adds
Edward Hoffman
Very quick service, our food was out two minutes after we orded it. It's a small space but they get everyone in and out so quickly it doesn't matter and it feels kind of like eating in a train car. The food was fantastic: the meat was nice and tender with good seasoning and the vegetables were fresh and crunchy. The highlight was the bottled sauces/salsas that you could add. A small burrito was the perfect size for lunch.
Karina Brown
The nachos and the service are excellent. The options for meals in the restaurant are not a lot. You can choose from tacos, bowl, or wrap and then add whatever protein you choose (they have a list of different things).
P W LP
Enchiladas good. Margarita (Cortijo Classic) exceptional. Refritos, exceptional. Guacamole on the side good, $2 extra.
This place charges a la carte for salsa. They also charge $5 for chips. Guac with chips is only $8.
Service was friendly. Before I got there the website said I couldn’t get in bc the next reservation was t for 48 hours. I walked in and sat at the bar, so
Likely needing an update to website.
I realize the trend is to charge a la carte for chips and salsa but it is a hurdle for me to thinking about coming back.
Karine E
A bit pricy, but the food was good. The margarita was also very tastefull.
John Beob
Awesome Mexican food! The best nachos I have ever had, tried the chicken and carnitas tacos, delicious. I wish I could eat there every day. Nice selection of beer and tequila. The people who work there were fantastic, really nice.
I was able to bring my wife for another stop here. She totally loved the food, once again the Nachos were fantastic and the pork belly tacos, what can you say other than AWESOME!!! Service is the best, love this place always will be on our list of stops up North.
Heineken500
Excellent carne burrito. Yes, it's large.
Fresh ingredients, great rice. Nothing too spicy.
Ben Trentman
The chips were great, potentially homemade (we didn't ask) and the salsa was fantastic. Some of the best I've ever had. The carne burrito was good, but would have been better drenched in cheese or a semi-spicy sauce. It wasn't dry at all, but more is usually better. The atmosphere is cool, but didn't match the food...it was like an old diner. I like the contrast it created.
Matt Takas
Excellent tacos and very tasty, spicy margarita. I sat at the bar for dinner and was served immediately. I tried three different tacos and was really impressed! Very flavorful and the special one with bacon jam was amazing. Check this place out if you are hungry for tacos!
Bailey Kimball
El Cortijo was great! They are not currently open for dine-in due to staffing, so we opted for take out tacos and churros which was amazing
Dez Roberts (she her)
The food is always really nice and fresh. I love the carnitas with the pineapple. It is in my top 5 of dishes anywhere in Burlington. The drinks are good, too. The special tacos are always fun to get, and it's nice to be able to try a new one, and still get my old standard as well. Also, always good service, everyone has always been attentive and kind.
Kyle Green
Really great vibe and excellent food. Check out the toilets, seriously the toilets have the coolest art work
jennbenn
A great little place with outstanding authentic Mexican cuisine. There's a bit of a wait on the weekends (which is to be expected), but it's absolutely worth it.
Kyle Dalton
First time here: Empanadas were big, full, and flavorful. Tacos were uniquely designed and incredible tasting. Service was great, drinks were good and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. Easily one of my favorite Mexican restaurants anywhere
Lucas Boebel
very quick service and delicious food at reasonable prices. ask for the made-in-house hot sauce. wish they had free chips and salsa.
Laura Napolitano
Great food & space! Finally was able to get a place to sit after only a 15 minute wait. There's always at least a 15-20 minute every time I go, sometimes it's been almost an hour and that is a good sign to me. For a small restaurant with great food, the wait is understandable. The drinks are a bit pricey but taste amazing! I'll definitely keep going back. It's one of my favorite places near Church Street.
Starr St James
One of the best lunch spots in town. Easy to pop in for a QUICK meal at the bar, service is always friendly and the food is always delicious. If you want to go all out you easily can, but if you order right you can have a totally affordable and tasty meal. Cheap beer selection is on point and you can't go wrong with the range of margaritas from the half basic to the full sized extravagant choices. Love. It. Get the lengua!
Ralph Vanore
Great mexican food and really different margaritas. Super nice staff and great ambience of an old diner car.
Ferox
A great little Mexican restaurant! Solid menu with fun margaritas, this is a great spot. The menu is slightly limited but the quality more than makes up for it. We tried a few taco options, guacamole, ceviche, and margaritas (smokey, passion fruit and coconut). Everything was excellent! The server was friendly and accommodating as well. El Cortijo is a fantastic spot to check out if you want to mix up your food choices in Burlington!
Adam Roeder
Love that it was a diner and they kept the vibe. The tacos were really good and we enjoyed the margaritas even more. Get there before 6 and you are good to go. After that you will wait. Can't seat more than 5 so best for small groups. So good we are going back again before heading out of town.
Mike Coughlin (Black Irish)
Very good taco's, I tried several and each was unique and delicious. Our party tried the regular, passion-fruit and blood-orange margaritas, and all were made well (I personally recommend the passion-fruit).
The taco portions were small, I ended up ordering a second round of tacos, eating 5 in total over the night.
Service was polite and professional, although it took a while to get our drinks (10-15min). All booths were full but the bar was not overly busy during our visit.
Fun, happy atmosphere. Intimate booths.
3/4 expensive.
Lucky Th13teen
Great tacos. Not the most authentic but I don't think that is what they are going for. Drinks are interesting and will made. Food is not as spicy as I would have expected but sauces at table allow you to bring the heat up marginally. Overall enjoyed it and would return.
Wade Cupkie
Worth every penny! Food was fantastic and they had a heckuva beer lineup too. Served in a retro diner setup, they’re cranking out excellent fish tacos and burritos. Stop in, fill up, enjoy!
AJ FAR
So-so taste for our much anticipated visit to the downtown Burlington location. All four dishes (burritos, pollo bowl, pescado bowl, enchiladas) did not have the punch that we were expecting, even after we asked for more spicy option. The best was the guacamole and the server!
Arnie Kuenn
Best mex in Burlington? Probably. Especially the burrito.
Bruce Y.
Hmmmmm. Went there on a Thursday night in the early Fall of 2018, and the place was full. Now, I know that one visit doesn't always tell the story, but ....
Bottom line, good luck getting to sit. I got my order to go, went around the block a few times, then paid and scooted. It, a burrito, was delicious, but I'd rather have sat and savored the whole experience.
All in all, yeah, it's all the good stuff others have noted. The staff was swamped but smiling. Food, one item, good, and served as soon as possible.
Don't ask me about the drinks. I dunno about such things.
Patty Crichton
There's almost always a wait here but the food service and atmosphere were good.this time was over an hour wait but I was with good friends so we walked around a lot. It's sometimes hard to pick a restaurant that everyone will like but in this case all agreed that local sourced food, and Mexican, were a winning combo. We are older,66, and it was mostly younger people on dates but that was fine. I live 2 blocks away so I'll be back. Oh, I'm on a keto diet but the carnes bowl/ salad worked out great.
David Steiner
Great locally-inspired Mexican food, reasonably priced. Amazing selection of authentic Mexican beers. Wonderful ambiance. Great staff and service. All set in a stunning restored 50's diner. What's not to like?
Samie Miles
Food is great, atmosphere is great, the people are great, I was swept up by the excitement of tacos and forgot that I’m vegetarian and ordered the chorizo burrito. After the first bite , delicious, I let the waitress know and asked to get the egg burrito, which they graciously didn’t charge. Would recommend for vegetarians and meat eaters alike!!
Cydney Alexis
I got an inspired margarita, a mix of two of their standards, using both coconut and jalapeño. It was amazing. My tacos were good. The standout was the (fried) fish taco. Counter service is great, too.
Ruth Kuzmanic
Small place, actually a train car I think. That was cool. So a long wait for a table. We had the shrimp taco plate and chicken enchilada. The rice and beans were so so-a bit dry, but the taco and enchilada were quite good. Certainly not the best mexican I have had, but I am from Chicago. Overall, it was very good.
Ayhan Yalcin
Definitely recommend this old diner converted to be a Mexican restaurant. I had Ceviche and Cane Asada both were delicious
mikutas
Good food but too expensive given the portions and compared to other good Mexican food. We used to get food as good or better in Seattle at the farmers market for half the cost. I'd go more often if it didn't feel so wrong paying that much.
Kat Barton
The food here is really good. It definitely comes at a higher price point than most Mexican restaurants and it’s not authentic Mexican. BUT if you want creative and delicious farm to table tacos, this place is one of the best. I grew up in Burlington and I always come here when I’m back home!
Matt P
Beef shoulder burrito was excellent! Had it "wet" and wasn't disappointed. Smothered in a great sauce it made the dish. The beef tongue taco was also most delicious. The vintage diner atmosphere was also an interesting twist on the typical taco place decor.
Ann Ely
Just off Church Street in Burlington, El Cortijo is in what used to be a dining car. I always get the fish tacos which are great. Good margaritas. Accomadating to those of use use don't like cilantro. I don't think they take reservations and it can sometimes be a wait for a table. Worth the wait.
T
It was ok. Good mexican good blows you away, this place was meh. Service was good, prices were ok, it just wasn't that great. Nothing bad, just not great.
David Cruz
We showed up at 6pm with no reservation the staff where great explaining they had a 6pm reservation, and if we cared to wait 20 minutes to see if that reservation showed they would give us their table. It was worth the gamble authentic mexican food in a old diner car with great staff. If you are bringing your kids to college try it.
Katie Aman
Delicious! I had a basic margarita and burrito. I enjoyed it immensely and the atmosphere was excellent. My friend and I sat at the bar and the wait time was not long for our food.
Rebecca Garvey
The large burritos were quite small. Two burritos cost around $26....also found the burritos rather lacking. It was dry and there wasn't a variation in flavor. Just a lot of the beans and rice flavor...needed some acidity, perhaps even some sour cream. Not sure if we just ordered the wrong thing or....
Sara K
Super fun atmosphere and delicious food! We went on a Tuesday night, pretty late (probably around 9:00 pm) and had a wonderful time. Great margaritas, great tacos, great service!
The Gaming Boss
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! Let me start off with the chips and dip. The chips weren’t stale at all and weren’t too salty. The salsa verde was to die for and the guacamole was perfect. I got the Carne Taco, Adobo Chicken Taco, and the Pollo Taco. The meat in all the tacos were juicy, not dry at all and was seasoned perfectly. The pickled jalapeños were perfect, not too sour and it gives a little kick to the taco which makes it perfect. The prices are a little to high but when u take the first bite of the food it feels like it’s worth that amount. Last but not least our server was very kind and nice, great service, great food, the BEST Mexican restaurant in Vermont!!!
Roger Phelps
Comfortable seating and atmosphere. Had a large burrito that I almost couldn't finish. Unfortunately I was expecting some side dishes like beàns and rice as extras but those were à la carte. They should just raise the price of the burrito and add those.
Jamie McQueen
Quick service. Happy servers. Cold beer. GREAT tacos. Thank you, EC, you did what Farmhouse Tap and Grill couldn't. One bit of feedback is to find a way to reduce liquid in tacos as the tortillas of the other tacos on the plate absorb this and loose their structural integrity. Perhaps using a slotted spoon? Thanks again! I will return.
Quinn McKenna
Good food in an interesting atmosphere. Star was in the service lead by the host/server. He had a very genuine personality and seemed to enjoy what he was doing, taking care of people.
rodney bledsoe
we went here trying to find some great taco's. they do have the farm to table method and the ingredients were indeed fresh and good. i felt the taco's were bland and could use more seasoning. the churros were nice. we felt the serving size to the price it cost to eat did not make for any value.
Richard Dow
Uber driver suggested this spot and my wife and I both love it!
Cool atmosphere
Great bartender
Great margaritas and munchies
The ceviche is awesome!
We stopped in, went to a show at the Flynn and went back for more
Our new favorite spot in town
Rachelle L
El Cortijo starts with amazing food, spices it with an unusual location, builds on the experience with perfect margaritas and tops it off with SWEET service. I really enjoyed my evening and will definitely be back.
Ryan Francis
Great food! Wonderful service! We’ll be back!
Nico
Nice little taco joint
Heidi and Dave Spurlux
Had a really great lunch here on a Friday, everybody working there was very helpful and friendly, service was just right, hot fresh fried tortilla chips and really good red salsa to start, everybody in our party was really happy with their food. We'll be back...
Jessi Travers
We had a great experience! The staff was amazing and I loved watching the work together as a team to get stuff done. The food was phenomenal and Kelsey made some great drinks. We will definitely be back!
Evan
Great little spot, the food was very good and filling, good options, had plenty of drink choices available and on tap. Charming vibe inside, decor was neat. Service was excellent, we just got the table near the door so it was pretty cold when people would come
Russell Feathers
Enjoyed great salsa and a burrito. Its definitely better tasting, and higher quality than the average mexican place, and that is reflected in the price. Service was great and love that its in an old diner!
Lissette Cruz
Amazing food/ drinks and impeccable service!
Ehdrian Sea
My favorite mexican restaurant in Burlington. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu - it's all delicious. Although, some standouts are the carnitas and chorizo tacos, the elote dip and the daybreak margarita. A cozy and cool setting, with super friendly staff.
Michael Jeannotte
Make your reservations ahead of time. Its a great time. Interesting combinations avaiable. Ingredients are fresh, drinks are tasty.
Shawn Jutras
Cool restaurant across from the parking garage we used for the day. It is in an old box car like you see used a lot with 1950's style diners. Clean, good food, drinks, nice staff. We ended up eating breakfast and dinner (with Margaritas) there the same day. Highly recommend.
Steve Welgoss
Super long wait, but also super good food. I mean, REALLY good food. It also has an excellent list of VT beer. Totally worth putting your name in, walking around the shops for a bit, then heading in for some good eats.
Abbey Hill
If you like coconut, the coconut margarita is a must! Best one I have ever had. Food, service, and atmosphere were great!
Betty Collins
Best place for Mexican in Burlington, VT. I come to visit from Maryland or Delaware and the first dinner or lunch I want from here. Shrimp, beef or fish tacos and you can't go wrong. What really brings me here is the Blood Orange Margarita. So flavorful. Makes you want more.
Brad Sargent
We definitely liked this stop. It does what it says the diner atmosphere is very cool staff was great margaritas are really good
Michel SansCartier
WOW! Discovered this place over the weekend..Super place to go and have a delicious mexican meal. Drinks are awesome and food is excellent. Staff is friendly and very attentive. The decor is also very nice...we will for sure be back!!
Rhoda Beachy
Amazing food and drinks. One of the best Mexican places I have been to in awhile.
Mary Liesenberg
Really good but also really pricey!! Crazy margarita costs! And 5 bucks a taco?! In Cali you’d be out of business next week... even the fancy restaurants don’t gouge like that back home.
Brandon Israel
I've never been to this restaurant before. Went to the new Winooski location. Had a carne burrito, my wife had a bowl. I'll get to the point: it's overpriced Chipotle. I'm sure their margaritas are good. Still pricey though.
Joshua Diaz
Tasty, and friendly staff, but i wouldn't exactly call it authentic Mexican food. Their drinks are great!
Patrick A.
Overpriced. Hipster service. The burrito was decent, but the tacos were underwhelming.
Russell Womer
Despite there being many great restaurants in Burlington, I find that I end up at El Cortijo for lunch almost constantly! Their tacos are awesome and the value of their burritos (especially the wet burrito) is excellent. Cap that with a constant supple of Hill Farmstead's Edward and you have the recipe for a great meal.
Rebecca Ribeiro
The food was great and locally sourced. It came quickly. Thank goodness, because i was starving after running a marathon. They probably saved my life.
I had a tasty beer, of which there were many to choose from. I didn't have a marguerita.... but i sure wanted one!
Don Holly
Yeah, its that good. As former Southern Californians that grew up on Mexican food, we are hard to please with almost all taco offerings in New England, and I think we always come out of El Cortijo with big smiles on our face.
Certainly, some of their specials miss the mark, but its great to see them extend their menu and try new things regularly. The standards of the Carne, Carnitas and Chorizo always satisfy, and although the Pescado does not compare to the ones you can get on the beach in Baja from the fishermen, they are better than the vast majority you can find anywhere within 100 miles. I think only MadTaco can beat them in flavor and quality of food, although the service at El Cortijo is always awesome, the staff there always pleasant and professional.
Rebecca Thiele
Maybe the best margaritas and guacamole we’ve ever had.
Patrick Hahn
Flawless. The best fish taco I've ever had. Solidly gluten free.
Kim Rutherford
As someone who spent several years in the Southwest, I am picky about Mexican food. My carne asada was delicious (would've liked a larger portion for the $$ though), elote and fish taco was yummy and homemade corn tortillas are really good. Best chimichurri sauce I've had in awhile. Food is very fresh & they make a pretty decent margarita. And they are open late night, which is how we found this place. Definitely worth a try!
Jessie Scott
Fantastic tacos and burritos! They really stay true to their "farm to taco" motto. I try to come here every time I'm in Burlington. The restaurant itself is small, so it can get busy pretty quickly, but the staff are very friendly and the food is worth the wait!
will keve
Burritos are hot and tasty. Great service. Nice bar/diner atmosphere.
Edin Suljanovic
Be open minded with this place. It's not authentic Mexican... Think of it more as a Vermont spin on Mexican dishes inspired by local ingredients. Solid drinks and very flavor able dishes with popping flavors. Open late on the weekends which is a bonus. However, the greatest mistake the owners have made is eliminating churros! A desert that completed a taco and margarita meal in The green mountains like non other 😪. Despite misery toward the churro choice, 5 stars are well deserved.
kevin muldoon
I had a carne burrito and it was bomb. Super tender beef shoulder, Fresh wrap, black beans and rice. Combined with dank beers made for a great visit. I had a heady topper and hill farmstead Edward.
Michael Bélanger
It's been over 2 years since my first and last visit to El Cortijo, and the reason is that I live in Montréal. To this day, I'm still thinking of how good was the food. It was simply amazing. Can't wait to be back in Burlington to come and visit you and my friends at Hen Of The Wood.
💚💚💚 …
Bridget Bailey
Adorable ambiance. The best Mexican food I've had in Vermont. Daily specials often include unique options and gluten free needs are easily accommodated.
Anthony Contreras
An oasis amongst average restaurants near Church St. We were wandering around looking for brunch and found this gem. Spicy bloody Marys and bloody Marias were on point, as for the food, it’s fresh and authentic. The hot sauces are made from scratch. The friendly staff makes for a wonderful time.
Dylan Macintosh
A friend recommended this restaurant for their burrito bowls and margaritas and we were not disappointed. The bartender, Maisy, was an absolute delight and was very informative about the surrounding area and gave us a lot of local tips for our Burlington adventure. I would highly recommend parking in the garage across the street, walking down to El Cortija for lunch or dinner, and then continuing your adventure by walking over to Church St to explore like we did.
Thomas Bremer
The foods really good, service is great and friendly. Margaritas are a really tart, good, but tart. I got the small carne burrito enchilada style and it was delicious.
Ethan Smith
I have been here twice in the last year and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. This place has incredible fish tacos and enchiladas. It's a small place so you may have to wait but its worth it. This is our go-to mexican joint in Burlington.
Tim Callaghan
Arrived at 5p on a Friday. There were just a few tables filled. Twenty minutes later the place was packed. Staff was genuinely friendly and helpful. Drinks and food was tasty and pricey but worth it.
Sandra Paritz
I love this place. I wish I could eat here everyday. I tried 3 different kinds of tacos tonight (some of everyone's) smoked quinoa, crispy pescado, vegetarian with tempura avocado, everything was perfectly spiced and delicious. The mexican hot chocolate was dreamy. Can't wait to come back!
Neil Marriott
This place is amazing! The food is so good I could not say enough good things about it! It's a historic Vermont diner that now serves some of the best Mexican food that you could ask for in a northeast corner of Vermont..
Yasmin Ospina
Ceviche and drinks were great! Tacos were pretty good too.
Judi Harris
Favorite taco stop in Vermont! Cute diner, although it can be loud. Love the outdoor seating and a great wait staff.
Everything is yummy!
Andy Pearson
Awesome food!! The whole place is super clean. Tacos and sides were amazing. Margaritas are well made.
Jesse Hidvegi
Tasty tacos and margos.
Kyle H
I really enjoyed the flavors and textures of the tacos at El Cortijo.
The staff was so amazing!!
Cambria Kenney
Food was great and service was wonderful. But it was definitely "hipster-authentic" not truly authentic Mexican food. The queso was particularly good.
Wanderer
Amazing food friendly staff pure deliciousness
Masumibot Red
Friendly staff, food arrived with lightning speed and was delicious. I had the Diablo bowl and it was seasoned well and very filling. Would visit here again for brunch.
Sam Urbôn
The tacos are tasty enough, but the portions are very small and way more expensive than Tex-Mex should ever cost. $25 a person plus drinks? No thanks, I shan't return.
John Green
Great unique take on Mexican food, nice vibe, very good, attentive service. Yes fresh farm to table. I wish it wasn’t eights hours away from home. 😉 …
Conor O'Brien
This place is way overpriced for such small portions in my opinion. Kind of flavorless idk who puts cauliflower in a taco w/ beef tongue, but the carnitas was good. The margarita was good.
Anna Marchio
Every time I am in Burlington, I have to stop. Great beer selection, authentic food. Small place, but awesome ambiance and vibe, never disappoints. A gem in the city!
Aidan Marshall
Service was not the best, our server treated us in a passive aggressive way. However the food was very good while a bit pricey. It was not super flavorful but still tasted good.
dorkette dipster
We have been here twice. Very nice, very flavorful. I wish they had a more varied menu but I’m very happy with everything I’ve ordered here.
Chelsey Jo
Really nice staff. Strong margaritas and great tacos. The taco plates are over priced, just get single tacos .
David Wilson
The food and staff are equally enjoyable here. Every time we visit my daughter(we're from upstate NY) We try to eat here.
Corey Gilmore
Better than typical Mexican food. Tiny inside and the tables fit a max of 5. Not great for large groups. There can easily be a wait.
Mike German
Tasty enough, but tacos were a bit small. At least there's enough beans to fill you up. Heard some people complain about the service when they left, but staff were nice enough to us.
Brian Yarwood
First visit, and I was pleased. I'm old enough to remember this place as the Oasis Diner, and I resisted going because I loved that place. But I was really pleased with the food, the price was fair, and the service was good. I will certainly go back again!
saroje portious
A nice place. Great food and service. The drinks were awesome.
Adam Sanchioni
Awesome place to get some unique Mexican food, also has a great tequila bar. Only thing is they are a little pricey, but if you like Mexican cuisine its worth it.
Joseph Fusco
Fresh ingredients and an authentic, tasty menu. A great, relaxed atmosphere makes this a delightful option at any meal. Looking forward to going back.
Addison Raap
Simply the best and my absolute go to restaurant in burlington. Authentic mex taste while achieving a localvore ethos and top notch tasty terroir. their new and improved dishes (deeper queso bowls!) and recent I housing of tortilla production is a big bonus. Waitresses are sexy and engaging. Passion fruit spicy margarita is a king among cocktails.
Rachel Shiloach
The food is incredible here! Service could improve, and that's probably why they don't have 5 stars yet ☀️
F. Gry
Yummy craft burritos in the heart of downtown Burlington....super tasty margaritas too
Charles Marlow Stanfield
Solid food. Beer selection is poor, but drinks were good.
Matthew Lestina
Pros: staff is very friendly and responsive, fun environment, great breakfast nachos
Cons: main course food, unfortunately, was pretty bland (particularly the meat), and the place is pretty small so you'll probably have long wait times
Prairie Dawn
Great American-style street tacos with local ingredients. Small old diner where Katz Deli was in the past. No parking, use garage across
Guillaume Légaré (DJ)
Very good tacos, decor and beer selection. The service was slow. The air conditioning was also a bit intense.
Windsong young
Excellent food but very high 18$ without tip for 2 taco plate is very expensive for the basics.
Deven Riley-Marini
If I could give this place 6 stars I would! Their guac is the everything you’d want guac to be and the enchilada sauce and cheddar option to add on top of your burrito is perfection.
Emil Skvorc
Believe it or not, I absolutely adore their noodles. I'd go every week if I could. The setup is adorable. Service was good.
Krissy Bigelow-Talbert
Not cheap, but SO GOOD it's worth it! We went for the Sunday brunch. My favorite was the breakfast nachos, and I'm not normally a nachos person!
frejjj
Best Mexican I have ever had. The queso is amazing, as are the tacos. Locally sourced, all-in-all an incredible place.
John Fagan
Love this place for lunch while I'm in town. Well thought out Mexican food with great beer and cocktail selections housed in an original diner car downtown.

Becky Martin
Very nice college-town place. A little on the expensive side, but that is to be expected with the high-quality ingredients. Everything was well-seasoned, portions might have been a little small.
Marc Virgilio
Tasty Mexican fare and a good beer selection in an old fashioned diner setting. A little odd but fun. Reasonably priced.
R. Lawler
Went after a concert at the waterfront park around 11pm. They were awesome! Great fresh ingredients and tasty margarita.
Carmen Mondelli
If you’re on the search for truly remarkable tacos, you’ve found some. El Cortijo offers splendid service, terrific food, and if you’re a lover of craft beers...
Adam Smith
Such an inviting environment, friendly staff, love The Fresh Tasting Food, great Tacos, and those homemade chips and salsa, and Best Margarita I have had in Town, I recommend the Blood Orange Margarita. 😃😃 …
Chad Ray
Closest to authentic Mexican tacos you will find around here, good food, good drinks, and small space with no reservations so plan to wait unless you arrive at the right time.
Patrick Harvey
Great food and atmosphere! It can get crowded and have a long wait, run next door to the bookstore if you have to wait for your table.
Sabrina Rufrano
this place is the absolute cutest to eat at with friends & family. the service is unbelievable & the huevos ranchers are phenomenal, 10/10 would recommend.
Riley Farabaugh
This place is super good. Delicious food, fun and friendly atmosphere. And their margheritas are the best you'll find anywhere.

Overpriced and loud. Had a rude server try to rush us out while we were still eating, and he wasn't even the one waiting on us.
Angela Noelle

Kenny G
A bit pricey, but hands down some of the best tacos in town. Drinks are great as well, margaritas are on point!
Andrew Fitch
The food wasn't bad but it wasn't special either. The prices seemed high for what you're getting.
Can't say I'd go back.
Anna Salate

Surprisingly higher end food for an old school diner. Muy deliciosa. Very gluten and dairy free.
Rick Valenta
Great tacos, drinks, and staff. A little on the pricey side, but your mileage may vary.
Rachel Manning
Your website is very annoying. I'm trying to decide if I want to check out this restaurant, but there is a pop up window that tells me to order online and I can't get rid of it. I can't view any sort of menu because of this banner thing. You should fix that.
Corinne Peck
Shrimp tacos were amazing. They were also super helpful attending to a food allergy in our party.
Alex Boyer
Was alright, more of a diner experience than i was expecting and a bit of the expensive side. They got the good Alchemist beers though!
