Tony is an excellent coach. His passion for training is evident in everything he does; from the moment you meet him and the time he takes to understand your goals, to the patience he has in each session, especially making sure you have perfect form and an understanding of the science behind the movement. I’ve seen great progress in just 3-4 months, and I have a greater appreciation for the process because of his coaching style.
Super fun and good humoured, Tony has created a non-intimidating environment to train. The whole team is friendly, approachable, and make you feel like you belong. They meet you where you are and inspire you to be better. I cannot recommend Sandbothe Strong enough: whatever your goals, they can help with the training plan, the nutrition, the motivation, and the fun.

I used to love lifting really big and heavy weights and had not been able to for years until I met Tony. With his unique technique and years of experience, I lift heavy again, safely! I’ve been training with Tony for almost a year now, and appreciate his goal oriented and thoughtful approach to training. I started going with my husband to prep for our wedding; I had no real experience with free weights and Tony made it approachable, easy to learn, and fun. Tony is a fantastic coach/trainer. I was looking for someone to help me with strength conditioning after a bad MCL injury. He took the time to understand what I was looking for and set up a specific plan for me to succeed. I came in with a max squat of 225 lifetime and within 5 months hit 315. Through his coaching, instruction, and guidance I have been able to successfully build my strength and knowledge. Great atmosphere and you can't beat his taste in music. Would recommend to anyone!

Alex is a phenomenal trainer and I can’t recommend him, and this gym, enough. Before I started training here, I had tried lifting on my own a few times, but always wound up hurting myself and would have to call it quits after just a couple of months. It’s been a completely different experience since I started working with Alex almost a year ago. He creates challenging workouts, but always ensures they are done with proper technique. His programming makes sure that weak points are appropriately targeted so you really see quick progress. I trained at Sandbothe Strong for about a year and a half, and let me tell ya, this place is the real deal. It’s owned by a lovely couple, Tony and Kristen, both of whom are not only phenomenal trainers, but phenomenal people. I personally trained with 2 trainers here, Jenn, and Kristen, both of which helped me achieve so many personal goals of mine and gain about 15 pounds of muscle and a lot of confidence over the course of a year. I started here having never touched a barbell, and am now at a point where I can bench 205, squat 315, and deadlift 335.
Everyone that trains and works here seems to have a very healthy mentally towards exercise and fitness, and everyone is super supportive of each other. It really feels like the trainers want the best for their clients, and at the same time they are always open to feedback and will listen to you if you feel like a particular exercise just isn’t seeming to work for you. I would recommend giving this place a shot if you are someone that just wants to become a better version of yourself. The reason I am not able to train here anymore is because I am a busy full time student and part time EMT and I decided it made a little more sense for me to utilize my college gym just for convenience sake, but I promise you if it weren’t for my busy school schedule, I’d make the commute any day of the week!!!
All ages welcome, all levels welcome, it really just doesn’t matter who you are when you step into this gym, the trainers will always be there to help you become who you want to be!

Alex is an amazing personal trainer. He is super knowledgeable and caring and not at all judgmental or intimidating. He trains both me and my husband and I’ve noticed that he tailors his approach to our different personalities to get us to reach our full potential. He’s also very diligent about correcting my technique to prevent injuries with lifting and has an amazing depth of knowledge about physiology. I’ve been having a lot of neck and back pain from my work and he quickly diagnosed weakness in specific muscle groups in my upper back and recommended exercises to do to strengthen them. I highly recommend Tony and Sandbothe Strong. Tony takes pride in his work and what he built, and that is evident in the way he trains clients. Tony is incredibly attentive and is laser focused on form and quality. He has established a very safe and supportive environment at his gym. Having had multiple knee surgeries and been sedentary for the past couple years, finding a coach and gym like Tony's was critical for me. I've already made significant progress under Tony's programming. My strength has increased, and my body composition has changed.
I also can't say enough about the culture and the environment at Sandbothe Everyone (other clients and coaches) I've encountered has been beyond warm and welcoming. It does not feel cliquey like other gym's nor is it intimidating. It makes training, even on the long and difficult days, enjoyable.

One is wholly engaged when training and Alex provides a safe and supportive atmosphere whilst still trying to push you onward in your capabilities. Like many of you I checked the reviews of this place before deciding to give it a shot. I'll add to the other glowing reviews here by saying stop looking around and get in touch with Tony RIGHT NOW if you want to work out at a serious gym with a trainer who knows their stuff.
One of the things I've been most impressed with is how all of the trainers here are able to adapt workouts to suit the level you're at now. Doesn't matter if you're young, old, too fat, too skinny or anything in between. They'll be able to set you on the right path by focusing on the fundamentals first and then slowly helping you progress at a pace that works, but keeps you from getting injured. As far as the workouts, they'll have you covered.
On top of that, you can tell that everyone in the gym wants to be there and takes pride in their work. Tony has done a great job of creating a positive atmosphere that's going to make you look forward to your next workout instead of dreading it.
I really can't recommend Sandbothe Strong enough and at the very least I encourage all of you to give Tony a shout and see if this might be the place you've been looking for.

Working in dentistry, I had bad and neck pain from bad postures. He helped me strengthen my muscles, especially the upper body. I had the absolute privilege to train with Tony in powerlifting for about a year. I am a former olympic weightlifter who competed nationally, and have every certification that you can get in the sport, as well as an NASM certification. For my research and experience as a athlete and coach myself. Tony is the best coach, an absolute professional, and trainer for lifting sports that can be found in the Portland area and an excellent athlete himself. One of the things that I most appreciate about his training style is his attention to typically undertrained muscle groups that typically cause power lifts to lag behind. He's good at the mental game as well as the physical, and will learn and utilize what motivates you personally. His combination of established methodologies ensure that that you can lift to your potential. If you care about your success as a weightlifter, care about your health and fitness, and you get an opportunity to train with him, take it.

5 stars for Kristin Sandbothe!!
After suffering from lower back injuries from sports and exercising incorrectly, I was hesitant about performing back squats and deadlifts. I didn’t need to worry. The Sandbothe Way focuses on correct lifting technique, religiously. Never before have I had a trainer place so much emphasis on bracing my core, pushing my knees out to engage my glutes, and correct grip and placement of the bar. I’m 38 years old and I’ve never been stronger!
Because the training is so good, it seems to attract a lot of good people, which makes going even easier. And for what you get, the rates for each session are extremely good value. Kristin could easily charge more.
Also, don’t be put off by the before and after shots of Tony and Alex on the Sandbothe website. They might look like meatheads but they are actually cool dudes:)

I came to the gym in the midst of Covid and was out of shape and unhappy and weighed more than I ever had. Working with Alex has been the best thing for me and my soccer skills and my overall health. I feel faster and stronger and I have more energy. I tell everyone I know to come work out here. As a woman, going to the gym can be scary and intimidating but I have felt welcomed and encouraged at Sandbothe since day 1. Every trainer there is intelligent and kind and wants the best for all of their clients but Alex stands out because he's the tallest. :)

I can't say enough about Tony and Kristin without writing a book😊. I started training with Tony years ago when he worked at 24 Hour Fitness. Even then it was clear his level of knowledge about the body and fitness far exceeded the other trainers there. I cancelled my 24 hour membership and followed Tony when he decided to start his own PT business. Before I started working out with Tony I hated working out-- I couldn't even do a squat! Under Tony I became the most fit I'd ever been in my life and began to actually enjoy training very much. I have also worked out with his wife, Kristin, who I train with now, and she is phenomenal as well! Besides being the best trainers, Tony and Kristin will work with you on your diet and what you should be eating to accomplish your goals. Tony loves to think he's some kind of counselor and a master debater--LOL-- which makes for some pretty fun conversations that make your hour of training go by quickly. All in all working out with either Tony or Kristin is really a very holistic experience that will enhance your overall sense of well-being. One last thing-- if you are worried about cost like I was, don't be! Tony and Kristen will work within your budget to come up with a plan/schedule that will still help you achieve your fitness goals. I can honestly say meeting, working with, and getting to know Tony and Kristin has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of the last decade of my life. I was one of Tony's very first clients in Portland back in 2011. This was long before he had a super nice gym or anybody helping him. Just me and him and some good, but kind of random equipment in an upstairs office like space. But even then Tony was the man. So committed to understanding my spirit, my goals, and most importantly how my body functions. As someone used to hot yoga and cycle, I remember being annoyed at first that I didn't sweat a lot with Tony. And yet the results were undeniable. I was strong AF! Had energy for days and was smaller in all the right places. My back felt sturdy. And even though I never ran with Tony I was able to run a half marathon with ease because I was legit fit. All this because Tony does his homework. He's focused his training on education vs exhaustion, on building your strength for a healthy long life vs a superficially thin body you'll never be able to maintain. I have not had a trainer like him since, but am so glad I was able to learn so much for him while I was there.

I have been training with Tony for about 6 years. I first called him as a last ditch effort for a “summer bod”, and I got it! He began training me 2-3 times a week and gave me a meal plan — it was the best shape I have ever been in, in my life!
I have since slowed down, and am not as strict with my self on the reg with any meal plan, but he has still managed to keep me strong and toned and he has even improved my posture!
Tony knows how muscles work and believes in keeping you strong, not just to show off your muscles but to make your body feel good.
He is not like a typical beefhead intimidating macho dude trainer. He is really easy to talk to and he designs workouts for your specific situation. He really knows his stuff and I trust him implicitly.
Everyone I have recommended him to has become a longterm client. Once I brought a friend to work with Tony, so I worked out with Kristin in the mean time. And she totally kicked my butt!!! (It was the best!! If I was not so loyal to Tony I would absolutely be with Kristin. Please don’t tell Tony.) I highly recommend Kristin to any new comers too!

To say that Tony is my trainer would be selling my experience with him short. I've been working with him for over six years, and have come to consider him more like a brother than just a trainer. Tony immediately appealed to me becuase he isn't one of those jacked up trainers you might find at 24hr Fitness who are more focused on the girl running on the treadmill than they are on your form. He's a guy who takes a lot of pride in what he does, and the results he helps his clients achieve. Tony loves the science of weightlifting, and the mechanics of the human body. When I came to Tony, I was 255 lbs (a personal worst) and depressed becuase I didn't know how to fix the situation. After our first session we discussed my goals, and he set up a plan that he promised would help me get to where I wanted to be... His belief in me gave me the confidence I needed to commit to the plan and do the hard work he pushed me to do. Six months later I weighed in at 205 lbs and 9% body fat. What's better is that I've been able to keep the weight off, and feel more confident in myself. I don't think I could have done that without Tony's unequivocal support.

I will say this, Tony and Kristen make a incredible duo. They have helped me in more ways that I can put into words. Tony is a genius, he will say some outlandish stuff.. Like most genius types do. Understand that its part of his charm. Oh and he can't spell to save his life.

I've been training with Kristin for about two years (and counting). Over that time, my strength and overall body confidence has significantly improved. I can’t recommend Tony and his team more! I am not a powerlifter or weightlifter. I am a soon-to-be 50 year old woman with Hashimotos and Type 2 Diabetes (which I am genetically predisposed to). I am lucky in that I am able to manage my diabetes via diet and exercise. (I swim 3-4 times a week). However, having both of these conditions makes managing strenuous physical activity and adequate recovery difficult. About a year and a half ago my Endocrinologist wanted me to begin increasing my lean mass and so I began weightlifting. I ran a typical linear progression focusing on the big 4 lifts (Squat, Deadlift, Press, and Bench). I got stronger and I added lean mass. However, I began having injuries. A back tweak here, nagging shoulder and hip pain there. I would rehab it and then sure enough—another tweak that would impact my lifting. My husband who has worked with Tony and had phenomenal results suggested I reach out to him to look at my training and programming.
Tony was able to quickly identify weak points and change my programming to a conjugate type programming where we continued to work on getting stronger, but addressed numerous weak points via accessory lifts and variations on the main lifts. He’s even had me lift with bands and chains some times – which are fun and add a whole other challenge. Tony also increased my conditioning levels which I have seen an advantage of in the pool as well. The best part, 12 months later I have had zero injuries and been pain free lifting while continuing to get stronger and better in the weightroom and in the pool.

A year and a half ago while travelling out of state, I had the good fortune of meeting Tony and his wife Kristin. I needed a place to train, emailed Tony and he was generous enough to let me drop by and lift while I was in Portland. At the time, I was rehabbing a recent quad tear, Tony and I got to talking and I was impressed by his knowledge, expertise and guidance. Since I was in town for a few days, I also got to watch Tony and Kristin coach some of their clients while I worked on my lifts. I was more than impressed by their abilities to coach the main barbell lifts to rank beginners--always focusing on subtle cues that would help their lifters make small form corrections while not overwhelming them.
Fast forward a year later and I was in Portland again for a week. Tony, always gracious, allowed me to drop in and train again. During that week, I noticed something. Some of the very new beginners I had met a year ago, were still seeing Tony. But they were now stronger, much more capable lifters. And these weren’t powerlifters, though they seemed to be gaining interest in the sport. These were moms and housewives in their late 40’s that started lifting weights to become stronger, fitter and cure back pains. Computer programmers in their 30s who spent too much time behind a desk and needed to better their physical existence. All of which were lifting with good form and had become competent lifters and strong in their own right.
While I was training away, I got to watch Kristen work with a fairly new lifter on squats. She was deft in her ability to coach the woman and increase her confidence and she was able to distill down the many changes that needed to be made into one cue that corrected a majority of the form issues.
As I trained, Tony and I continued to talk between sets. We revisited the subject of my quad tear which took me over a year to fully rehab and I was just getting back to the strength levels pre-injury. Tony discussed programming with me and offered to assist me with that element of my training remotely while I was back in Austin. I agreed and welcomed his input. Tony began implementing Conjugate Programming into my training (better known as Westside). He quickly identified weak points in my lifts and began working with me to strengthen these things. As a guy who has squatted over 500 pounds and dead lifted over 600, I was anything but a new lifter. However, Tony was able to review my training and lifts and develop an approach that had me feeling like a new lifter. He implemented much needed accessory work, increased my conditioning levels and introduced new variations of the main lifts that have helped me strengthen my overall body. Months later, I am 10 pounds leaner (without trying to be) and a much better lifter. Form is improved and my overall strength levels have increased. Additionally, many of the aches and pains I had from training heavy previously have gone away. I am doing more work, but recovering and managing fatigue better. This is all due to Tony’s input and guidance. Tony’s input and guidance have been nothing short of miraculous and he has greatly informed and grown my training philosophy.

I am a simple office dweller living a more or less sedentary life who has a spotty attendance record at Sandbothe Strong. Nonetheless, training with Tony has eliminated chronic lower-back issues, fought the nagging soreness and dilapidation of aging, and has made me feel much better moving around the world.
All of that has been well and good, but more remarkably I've become a pretty solid dead lifter. One day on a whim Tony suggested we test my one rep max and I pulled two and a half times my body weight. That's the sort of results real, honest to goodness power lifters are after and somehow I got there almost accidentally. Maybe I've got really long arms or really short femurs that help with the lift, but more than likely my success is because of Tony—his expertise, his constantly evolving training program, and his efficient workouts.

Unfortunately the other trainer that my wife was seeing was a joke!! Anyway Tony has a passion for his field and it was obvious. I suffered from bad posture and Tony helped me to get rid of my “ turtle man” look as he put it. Tony helped me in more ways than one, and eventually after my prodding ( she saying goodbye to her former trainer who made a killing off of her) began to help my wife, who had suffered from extreme back problems. Highly Recommend! I have been working with Alex Villarreal @aretestrong for 16 weeks now. Times flies when your having fun & crushing GAINZ! When Alex invited me to try out a workout at Sandbothe, I was recovering from a major muscle injury in my calf, had multiple chronic illness issues to work around, was malnourished (consuming 800 cals or less/day — Not by choice!) and was about 20lbs under a healthy weight. I have been a strong athlete most of my life, despite my sports history and understanding of the human body and rehab... I was stuck, uninspired, and needed HELP! I’m a little biased but I riled a 85000lb truck and had torn rotator and bicep ligament three docs said after six weeks of hospital rehab treatments. I had to have surgery or would not ever have full use. Called My sis who is surgeon she said don’t ask a surgeon if you need surgery of course you do. Called Tony he said come out I’ll get you through this eager to leave Iowa 22 hours later I was on his stoop. He worked me out for a week and I was amazed the pain was gone and I could do anything I wanted with my biceps and shoulder. Tony has always been a man who wanted to do everything correct. You will not get a more qualified person any where on this planet. He’s always been hell bent on providing value to his clients. And he has alway done that and found it to serve him well. So my final recommendation for you. If you are going to go to a trainer go to Sandbothe Strong for value Qaulity and results

Myself and my wife have been training with Tony for over a year now, when I first came in I was looking at a knee operation for a torn meniscus. Having been under the knife already that year for an ankle reconstruction, and having had previous knee operations in the past, this was far from ideal. The knee was unstable, it was tough to drive, the knee would lock up and it couldn't be extended fully and it was painful to bend. The strength work I have done with Tone has stabilized the knee, there is now zero pain and discomfort. I cannot recommend Tony enough, top bloke!!!

I have trained with Alex when I first started getting into strength training. I had been dealing with lower back pain for a bit and wanted to strengthen myself as a way to alleviate the pain. Not only has Alex helped me get stronger (from starting from lifting 95 lbs 3x5 to one rep maxing 335 lbs within a year) but has also been instrumental on educating me on what exactly I need to do to keep growing. "You brought me a boy, I gave you a man." -Tony Sandbone That's Tony talking about me. I guess he is right, even though I am 35 years old and reached puberty about twenty years ago. Come to think of it, twenty years ago is also about the time my lower back started hurting due to a what I later learned was a degenerating disc. It's given me chronic pain for most of my life. Massages, chiropractors, Advil overdoes, Hydrocodone dreams. Nothing really worked. Then I started going to Tony. My back still hurt for a while. But now so did my arms, my abs, my butt, my legs, my shoulder, my elbow. Everything hurt. A lot. Muscles started forming in places I can't reach. I started standing straighter. Walking differently. Tying my shoes without gasping for breath. And then one day, while I was carrying a wine-bottle-filled grocery basket at Whole Foods, it hit me. I wasn't wincing in pain. My back was getting better. As I write this, my back hasn't hurt in months. Now I'm dead lifting, squatting, and doing all kinds of things I would have previously thought impossible. And I know if I stick with Tony's expertise and regimen, it will only continue to get better. Also, I think I got a few more chest hairs, so maybe Tony is right about the man thing.
