Always a great theater 🎭 experience when I attend any performance @thepublictheatre Last night I was in attendance at the showing of WHERE WE BELONG... A bit of a snooze 😴 fest. Thanks to the audio effects, I was awaken at the right moments and at the highlights of @madelinesayet best moments. M. Sayet the Mohegan theater 🎭 maker was recently named Forbes 30 under 30 in Hollywood. Her acting is STRONG; yet I was unable to connect with her portrayals of the many characters. Where Madeline excelled was in her seamless transitioning into the 'next' character...which was reminiscent of Lehmann Trilogy. Side note, the staging (in particular) the sliverish background appeared to get its inspiration from the set design of Slave Play 👀...just saying. I pay attention 💯💯🎯. The saving grace for this rather bland performance, was the overall production. The set design (with moving props), the lighting, the sound engineer all played a pivotal role in keeping me quasily awake and thinly engaged. Though the topic of exploitation, the assimilation n2 the dominant culture is relatable this felt as though the story being told was deliberately myopic. A simpleton can follow along to this pre-K plot and elementary acting. In good faith... I will not 🚫🚫🚫 recommended the viewing of this production. The Public Theater missed the mark on this... looking forward to seeing what's up at bat next👀. Save ur coin, ur fit & gas money...stay 🏠 and Hulu/Netflix & chill🎯💯😎🧐🤫🤫🤫

A great Theatre to see live performances. Ambience and acoustics are very good. Staff is courteous and helpful. The facilities are clean and well kept. Food and beverages are available as well. Worth seeing live theatre in this venue.

Small space to see a show. Sound was excellent. Seating was roomy. Definitely will be back!

Wow!! Run, don't walk to Socrates! It moves fast, tons of dialogue, many intriguing plots. Thought it might be too long at almost 3 hours ... nope! It's mesmerizing. Timely + relevant, high-brow but accessible, very well acted! We got picked for free preview tix, so that was worth $200 off at the box office. If you love contemporary theater, see this! Here are some photos of a very innovative Tempest!
Wilbert Pabon
It's wonderful they have two restaurants Joe's Pub and the Library, plus 5 theaters...
Elisa G Schneider
One of the best off broadway venues in the city. Be prepared for a lot of stairs for some of their theaters, however. All theaters are accessible though.
Chuck Rhoades
I went to see Wild Goose Dreams and was absolutely blown away. The cast and stage are incredibly professional, the play is really modern (it includes tons of social media references), and it is definitely an immersive experience. As for the theater itself, it's very nice and has a mini cafe in the lobby.
Jennifer M
Thoroughly enjoyed the play "White Noise" by Suzan Lori-Parks. The venue is huge with any theaters.
My only issue is that I wish there were restrooms on each floor so that I don't have to make a mad dash to the bathroom during intermission.
This is the theater that Hamilton was first performed before it went to Broadway!
Mary Dailey
The PUBLIC theater consistently has many of New York's finest productions. The theater spaces are small enough to allow for great performer-audience exchange.
This year Fat Ham (a juicy modern Hamlet written as a witty comedy revolving around a modern Black family) is the stand out. As I write this I believe it is nearing the end of its extended run. I feel privileged to have seen it in this venue.
Alex George Bejan
The play Socrates was outstanding. An incredible (and large) cast presented a philosophical debate on civic issues that a sold out theater watched breathlessly for 3 hours.
Elsten Torres
Joe's Pub is an incredible venue to see live performances
Raymond Vagell
Great place for concerts (Joe's Pub). Their menu is also delish. Most shows require a 2 drink or $10 food minimum. Have the food! Really like the fried mozzarella and the Joe's Burger
Alexandros Patsikos
Luckily there are theaters like this one in NYC (apart from Broadway) that promotes smaller productions. It's a privilege to have such a good institution that has many free shows and is even touring with their mobile unit so that they reach people out of Manhattan! You can get almost every play with rush tickets and also let's not forget the Shakespeare in the Park that is totally free! Recently saw Glenn Close and I really enjoyed it!
Brianna Cabrera
I never have a bad time at The Public. So many great, innovative shows going on all the time. Intimate music space with Joe's Pub. Energetic, friendly staff no matter what time of day. You can't go wrong with spending some time/catching a show here. Haven't had their food while there recently, but the times I have it's been really good. Slightly more expensive than most other places like it, but not significantly so. Worth noting: their safety protocols require that patrons wear face masks and show proof of vaccination which includes the first booster shot, if eligible.
Dawn L. Troupe
Excellent place to see stories come to life. Love Joes Pub and the little Black Box Shiva space. Bar upstairs and snack bar downstairs. They even held for a couple minutes before the show after our train was delayed.
Ruth Choate
AMAZING opening performance of Suffs! Beautiful venue, easy check in, clean restroom.
Shaopeng Yuan
Still be the best place to see plays that were sophisticatedly developed and with reasonable fare… very nice staff and clean building itself…
Jackson Bloomston
Awesome little location. Tight table arrangent but it's to be expected at seated venues that serve food and drinks like this. I saw one of my favorite artists do a solo piano show and it melted my heart.
Jonathan Christopher
This is an up close and personal experience that is a must visit. White Noise is a must see show! Well written and performed!
Azadeh Nematzadeh
Highly recommend to those visiting NYC, there is always a great show, unique space and great productions.
Zach Graber
Went to see every show this season at Shakespeare in the park and every one blew me away. I feel so lucky to have access to such an amazing theater. It is a gift to New Yorkers!
fansofrealmusic
I saw an amazing show called "Ain't No Mo'" it was a spectacular cast. The theater was beautiful and clean. We'll definitely go back and see anything there!
Arisael Rivera
Always clean, friendly people at box office and ushers. And good plays!
Dennis Denev
What a great experience ! We came here for s shoe and the performance was great ! The food was not bad still we only had appetizers and drinks.
David Pierson
We saw a raisin in the sun
So we’ll done and powerful
Great experience
Sean “WonderMan”
Would have been five stars, but all I do is work there. Plan to see a show someday...
Kathleen Donaway
A very nice theatre with the fastest ladies room lines, very comfortable seating, wide aisles, a very modern lobby, and friendly staff! Great experience and grab tickets quickly for their shows!
Taylor Munson
Cute place with great sound. restaurant has a 2 drink minimum.
Kyle Jensen
First we had a drink at The Library, then saw The Visitor. This is an amazing venue with an important mission. The building and atmosphere were incredible and our service at The Library was great. Obviously the shows change, but The Visitor was excellent.
Joel Nunez
The Public birthed A Chorus Line and Hamilton. Need I say more? Last weekend we watched A Chinese Lady, a heartbreaking account of the first Chinese woman brought to the US to serve as an attraction. Her story is blended with historic and historical accounts of Asian hate, all the way to the recent spate of hate crimes committed against modern-day Asians in America.
lauren romao
Never disappoints / creativity in it's highest form. Performances, mixed media & musical experiences are one of a kind and cannot be found anywhere else
Jay B
I saw an amazing, Pulitzer award winning play in an intimate space. Great acting, comfortable seats, reasonable prices!
Tyler Shore
Staff and ushers are excellent. Facilities are clean and wonderful. Bathrooms are more than adequate, and the experience is lovely.
Christian Franco
Amazing place and excellent show. Nella from Venezuela 🇻🇪 …

I love Joe’s Pub! It’s my favorite place! 💋❤️💋❤️💋 …

What a treat! The theater (the one on the front right) was new and intimate - I was center in row K but I didn't think there was a bad seat in the house. Plenty of leg room.
Now for my classic size evaluation: I am 5'10 and a women's size 16/18. The leg room was more than sufficient. The seat itself was comfortable, and a comfortable width for me. The fixed armrests are not wide enough to share. There was an empty seat next to me on one side that I did lean into at times. Hope this helps!
Rafi Hasib
Great venue for intimate performances. The layout is so that there really isn't a bad seat in the house, although your view may be obscured by people in front of you at the same table. Do yourself a favor and get a seat behind of, not in front of, a table. Unfortunately, on top of the ticket price, you're required to buy food or two drinks, so there's a guaranteed $25+ to spend besides the price of admission. This easily adds 50% to your price, even with fees. But that model seems to be working for them, and they continue to bring excellent, niche performances to New York.
MJ Hayes
Saw a A Winter's Tale and it was phenomenal!! Great space. Easy to get to via the train. Would be mindful if attending the theater as a handy capable person. May need to confirm that elevators to your respective theaters are running to those floors.
Monte Bertrand
Saw Bridget Everett here. The venue is gorgeous. Ate at their Library restaurant. Very tasty.
Jennifer Kite-Powell
Fantastic venue for performances of every kind.
Pooja Gaikwad
It has five stages/venues where plays, events are held. The stage on the level 1 where I attended a jazz event was great. It is small but with great light and sound arrangements. Great staff , cheap tickets, averagely priced drinks( has wide options) and food (they served us at the table while we enjoyed the show - without spoiling our experience). Note ! - The tiping options are limited : it is either None or 18%.
Beth Farnswoth
I saw Seawall/ A Life here a few months ago. I absolutely loved it. The theater itself is intimate and inviting. Allowing the audience to fully engage with the art unfolding on stage. Tickets are affordable and it's nice t feel that the entire community is encouraged to come
Gabriel Flores (Gabo)
Public Theater is the place to go. It is a theater for new voices. It started being Ng the new artist voice decades ago, before other theaters and groups follow the trend. Now, we audience, benefit from such risk and hard work Joseph Papp and his staff of creative people made possible. The theater is in prist conditions. Staff are gently and willing to help all the time. They follow strict covid-19 protocols to keep audience, artists and staff safe. The theater and the space still have it's magic. I was there in 1989. I was working with Venezuela theatre troupe Rajatabla and Joseph Papp invited us to perform there. It was a magic experience, and still is, every time I go to the Public Theater or to Delacorte Theater Summer Series, it is a mix of emotions not only for my old relationship with the theater, but for the kind of plays and actors involved in the productions.
Leo Passman
The performance I saw was lacking, but the venue was amazing. The drinks were a bit pricey, but everything else was exactly what you want for a fun night out. Great lighting, seats, service and sound quality in the room.
Cortez Singleton
Very nice ..intimate seating in this theater ( on third floor )
Brenda Davis
This is my favorite theater in NYC perhaps the world! It’s worth taking a look at their calendar of shows if your visiting NYC and if you get a chance pop in. Dress code is smart, you can dress up if you want a lot of people do. It is a fantastic experience! There is a really good bar upstairs that’s worth a visit before the shows.
Jackie Gordon Singing Chef
We went to the public theater to see Freakonomics and the show is quite good. I hadn't been there in many years and It was the first time I'd eaten there. I have to say the service was quite good for such a tight space with a show going on. We had the mini lobster rolls that were tasty. The burger was a bit of a disappointment because it had these chunks of gristle in it like the meat wasn't very good quality. It wasn't cooked to the right temperature either but in such a noisy crowded environment I wasn't about to send it back. The fries were decent. My partner enjoyed his trout dish.
Thomas Anthony
I love the public theater, joe's pub and the library upstairs. Every event I've been to here has been top notch
Christabelle Vasquez
Such an amazing theater to enjoy a good show. The staff were so kind and loving that it made the place so enjoyable. I went to see The mobile unit perform the tempest and it was mind blowing. I loved every second of it. The cast was amazing.
Marcelo
One of my favorite theaters in New York. Check out their calendar and go see something there. I got to see Glenn Close perform in “Mother of the Maid” a couple of weeks ago, and it was a fantastic experience. They have a great bar upstairs to meet up for a drink first. It’s also great to see shows that will potentially move to bigger houses in the future and not pay so much money. Hamilton for example.
Isreba Wheeler
It was amazing. My brother, Mark Porter, born from another mother, took me to see A Bright Room of the Day. Incredible... Made me cry. (Shhh... Don't tell anyone).
The theater itself holds 4 small theaters in total, one being Joe's Pub, which I've frequented quite often, to see both Ann Hampton Callaway, and Anne Steele. That theater is quite large. But this theater was small and very quaint, even staging a bit of pyrotechnics during the play. Reminded me of Trans Siberian Orchestra.
The red seats were quite comfortable, and I have 2 metal rods in my back, and 6 metal screws as a souvenir from a long lumbar fusion procedure (don't ask, long story, I'll tell ya later).
They have an elevator so that's a great benefit. Serving a bit of food at the bars inside, a ramp for wheelchairs, a concession stand with snacks. Everyone is extremely friendly and kind.
I've never had a bad or indifferent experience there.
Treat yourselves... Go to the public theater, or Joe's Pub, or either of the other two theaters.. they don't disappoint.
Trust me.
You know you want to.
Frank O.
My 1st time, & impressed. The bldg is an architectural gem. Love the Shakespeare light machine thingy in the lobby! Staff A-plus! & the show, fantastic! The Girl from the North Country. Outstanding! Looking forward 2 seeing more shows here.
My Ex
A few decades old this institution has hosted some of the best in the music, and theater world. Decent sight lines, good lighting, clean restrooms and mostly on time start to the show. The staff is experienced and attentive. Most crowds will not whip out the phone so there's little distraction from what's onstage. Only true gripe is the pricing which falls in the Rockwood/City Winery model. $12 for food/drink or two drinks. Entrees are pretty pricey but there are a few sides or desserts that are exactly $12 so tip your server.
Roxanne Feldman
What a treasure.. the theatrical pieces they curate are often thought provoking and innovative. A huge fan.
Noah Kim
Joe's Pub: Great show venue. Pleasant food with attentive service.
Rob Kass
The Public consistently puts up great work here. Even its misses are still pretty darn solid. All of the building upgrades have made this place even better. You must check out a show - any show - in any of its unique performing spaces. Tip: Become a member. It's worth it. Helps get you tickets to shows that are nearly impossible to snag a seat for.
Judy Hahn
Don't miss this theater space-- from the simple but great entrance, the ghost light in the corner, the mini Cafe offerings and the clean bathrooms to the comfortable seats in the theater! Many good views to choose from. I saw white noise, which every one should see. The cat was incredible. And Daveed Diggs chatted with fans even though it was between shows on a two show day.
Amber Patton
The Public is always a wonderful place to see quality theater, but its also great at bringing together the community. I just went to the Civic Salon where the conversation was about radical feminism, and understanding oppression outside of yourself. How social justice can become alienating if we're constantly setting rules. It was powerful, and free! I think everyone should go! Of course, the theater itself is beautiful and the food was amazing at Joe's Pub. I'll be going back again and again.
Nathaniel Soria
I've now seen two shows here that have floored me-- moved me to my core. On top of that you're getting a professional and stellar performance for a fraction of the cost of Broadway. The set designs are equally impressive, how they utilize and design the space is stunning. As you can read I have nothing but good things to say about it. The Public is a must see for visitors and NY lifers alike!
Lunasea Mmxi
Great space with multiple venues on site with 1st run plays. I believe Hamilton played here before moving on to bigger venues. But that may be a rumor ;)
There is a restaurant that does a variety of shows. 3 floors of entertainment but they are staggered so not overly crowded at any given time. It's a grand building in old fine New York style. Glad to see it's being kept up with newer elevators, facilities & lobby. If you get a chance to catch a performance there, you'll enjoy it.
Jeffrey Macklis
Great performance space with innovative programming. Last night we were at Joe's Pub for a benefit. Outstanding venue. Always a joy, whether a theatre production or a musical review.
Rachel Abrahams
So many wonderful productions! Joe's Pub was a fun space.
Lyubava F
We keep on coming back to The Public Theatre! We saw different plays in different rooms, including Joe's Pub, and every time it was an engaging and joyful experience. The ticket prices are reasonable + this theatre also offers lottery tickets.
CeeCee B.
Great theater! Saw Illyrian there. Seats in the particular theater I was in were small in that there was barely any legroom. Perhaps its better in front row where you can stretch your legs. Although its very close to stage and performers, who utilize the entire space. Wouldn't want to stretch your legs and trip an actor. Overall a nice place, plenty of bathroom stalls, decent drink menus. If you enjoy theater its worth going too. One block from 6 train- Astor place. You can't miss big sign!
Rena Anastasi
Fun, intimate place to c shows, music etc 💗 …
Christine Daley
A beautiful theatre and Teenage Dick was a fantastic show!
Ze'ev Gedalof
We saw Girl From the North Country on the Newman Theatre stage. The show was amazing, and the space was really intimate. Not a bad seat in the house, great sound, and friendly helpful staff.
Anwita Ghosh
My favorite play house in NYC! Witnessed some of my favorites like Fat Ham and other Shakespeare plays...
Bob G
I love Joe's, the entertainment is top-notch, food is good and reasonable, and the staff is great. Lose the surcharge on the tickets and this place is a perfect 5. But most of the time you can get lucky and buy a ticket off the street
Corey Herzlich
Saw Matteo Lane perform here, aside from him being awesome and super entertaining, place was a lot of fun. Has an old classic feel to it. Had their version of a margarita, which was a bit on the sour side. Burrata was tasty too, but could’ve been a bit softer. Needed a knife to cut it. Will have to check this place out again.
Kathryn Broze
Saw Miss You Like Hell here in April 2018. The theater was intimate and cozy - a great venue to watch a play up close and personal! Lobby and bathrooms were clean and nice as well.
Benjamin Walker
Epic, amazing mission and ground breaking theatre. If you get a chance to catch "gently down the stream" in April and may 2017, you'll be moved and delighted. Harvey always delivers, but especially that Christopher sears! He really holds his own up there!
Yolanda Shoshana
This is still one of my favorite theaters in NYC. They take chances and bring out innovative work which has been a part of their mission since Joseph Papp founded it. There are always good deals to see a show so look for those offers if you want to take a chance to see some quality NYC theater!
william quirk
Excellent off-broadway option for heady and provocative productions. Recently, I saw HAMILTON, First Daughters, Mother of the Maid, among some others. Small theaters give you great lines of sight. The restaurants in the area are amazing, and you get a better sense of “real” New York than Times Square.
An Tong
Been here several times now and it is consistently good food. A bit pricey but does not disappoint. The space is not noisy, rather atmospheric with books and performance posters. I will continue to go back. Great place to take the future in-laws kind of place.
Irma Zandl
Just saw Sandra Bernhard here (she’s fabulous). But everything I’ve ever seen at The Public has been terrific from theater to music. Very strong curatorial program.
John L
The Public Theater in New York City on Lafayette Street and Astor Place is a great performing arts theater to say the least.
The Public Theater is a designated New York City Landmark.
The building itself is a piece of work to say the least again, both in and outside.
Warm and grand, and appealing and impressive.
They are located across the Street from where the Blue Man Group performs.
Purse Queen61
Overpriced eats (Joe’s Pub) with a $12 (or) 2 drink minimum... But the food is Good! Yet our visit was specifically for a concert; which was PHENOMENAL. . . A word of warning-- this place gets crowded and cramped very quick!
Noah Johnson
One of my hobbies is to go to the theater. The atmosphere of this particular place makes me forget all my busy days. Everything is new and the staff is very responsive to all visitors. I like the fact that here perform musicals and one of my favorites is "Cats", which I attend every time.
Mark Glick
Cool place for the best theater
Klara Pauline Søgaard Jensen
Went to see the Nina Simone event on Thursday evening. The waiter was really observant, came multiple times to fill up water and ask us if everything was alright. I had the burger, which was good but unfortunately, not outstanding.
Andreas Schulmeyer
Nice casual setting for off Broadway shows. We ended up sitting at a counter with great view of the play taking place throughout the venue. Saw 'Thicker than Water'
Kathleen Henkel
Absolutely fantastic. A beautiful building and the performance we saw was wonderful - Justin Vivian Bond. A singer extraordinnaire. A great evening. Great food and drinks as well.
Julie Lee
We went to see the Alien Nation which is a show about immigrants family. Each guests tell about their experience as an immigrant in US. We enjoyed the show trenmendously. The pub food was delicious.
M.A. Lebron
May be the best place for quality, innovative theatre in NYC, along with BAM in Brooklyn. Fantastic building, seats comfortable, sight-lines, acoustics good. Try Joe's Pub next door for dinner and Jazz.
Tarek ElSawaf
The space is very intimate. Audience chairs are surrounding the stage in a U shape, so the stage view is good from all angles. Parking is difficult, but then again so are most places in the city. Bathrooms are downstairs in the basement level.
Luis Peter Sanchez
Second time seeing a show here. First one was for "Bounty Hunter", now my friend debuts as a composer with his show "Who Is Cheeyang?". Great space and service. Usually a two drink minimum while attending a show.
Chuck Vassallo
Another thought-provoking and moving production ("Gently Down The Stream"). The Public presents some of the best theatre in the world, in beautiful performance spaces, with the most moving actors. We are lucky to have this venue.
Shay Main
Love this place and they are very strict with vaccination rules. It's for your safety.
Peter Flanagan
I went and saw Blue Man Group here and halfway though realized I had already seen them when I was a child and completely forgot. They're not really worth seeing twice. The venue was great though!
Shay Novinski
Good food, great staff and a wonderful venue and show! (Alan Cumming - Legal Immigrant show)
Catherine Pherson
The last time I saw a play at The Public, it was the 1980s. My memories of that experience are so sketchy, I am not entirely sure if the theater is still in the same location. Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing a performance of MOJADA by Luis Alfaro. Lovely production of a thoughtful social drama directed by Chad Yew. The stage is up 5 flights, but, luckily for us over-60s, there is an elevator. Production is a bit over 90 minutes without intermission. I didn"t have any trouble staying focused on the performance for the full time, and the audience awarded the dedicated cast with a standing ovation. Spacious restrooms off the lobby, five theaters per the program , and Joe's Pub which appears to showcase musical talents. Located on Lafayette Street at Astor Place, there is no parking on premises. Two subway stations within walking distance - Astor Place via #6 train and 8th Street via N or R train.
Richard Post
A New York City institution!!!
Plays and performances far better than most of what "Broadway" theatre district offers! A performance and art "multiplex" including pub and dining. Fair priced, often free tickets make this treasure accessible to everyone.
Blake Wolf
Amazing theater with a palpable energy that puts on great shows.
Caroline Bastian
I've seen all of the shows at the Public this season, and while I've liked some more than others, none of them have been a waste of time. Every production has been professional, well rehearsed, and has been something that made me think. It is truly one of New York's finest institutions.
Fred Lenz
Saw Basim Youssef at Joes Pub. Very very honest and funny
Eileen Pabon
The Public Theater is a really cool spot in NYC. The staff is really nice and friendly. They put on the Shakespeare in the Park festivals for millions of New Yorkers. I highly recommend the Public Theater!
Albert Wong
My is this place fancy. It's sort of like a mini version of Lincoln Center for me. So +5 points on my dating profile on how cultured I am. Friend of mine invited me here for a rendition of Hamlet. $15, 30 minutes, an Indian man with his monologue. Interesting. Pretty funny. Georgous space and the wait wasn't too bad. Means of egress is always important! Oh and nice bathrooms.
dar
Walked past it plenty of times but finally went in to see a play by a playwright I knew and was not only impressed with their work but the space itself. Friendly staff, lobby is designed for mingling, drinking, talking, or taking in mini installations. Looking forward to future trips.
James
Definitely a New York city staple and an asset to the theater community. Many Broadway productions had their start here, including Hamilton and A Chorus Line. If you want to see important theater created and acted by a diverse array of voices this is the place for you. Also check out Shakespeare In The Park at The Delacorte during the summer- it's free if you can nab a ticket!
Jim D
Loved it... my wife and I went to see Grace Kelly (the jazz musician). Had a great time. The show was wonderful, the food was great and for nyc... it was reasonable.
Malik Taylor
Nice place but seating for the theater is cramped. Menu selections are pricey and small. However, the portions are good. Make sure you're hungry when you go so it'll be worth it.
Malena Vareles
Great theater experience. A total of five theaters in the complex. All comfortable. I saw Mother of the Maid and Woman of the North Country. Both excellent productions.
James E Kelly
Great place for entertainment purposes. 4 separate theaters, including "Joe's Pub". They also have a bar and lounge upstairs for food and drinks before or after the performances. Nice experience.
Laura Jones
Lovely space. Friendly, helpful staff.
Josh Davenport
Consistently amazing, captivating works, and a flury of activity merely begin to describe The Public. From pushing the limits of technology, to introducing new standards of excellence, the Public exhilarates artists and audience alike. They truly are radically inclusive too! One of a kind building, amazing staff, unique experiences.
Hanna Bowden
Very cool location, a mix of about 5 theaters. The building is also just fun to look at. I attended the theater at joe's pub. Food was tasty and service was good, pricey for not getting much food.
Doug Reside
One of the best theater companies in the world. Created A Chorus Line, Hair, and Hamilton. Seeing shows here feels both historic and somehow very relaxed.
Ryan Muir
Great place to see developing theater before they hit the big time and Joes Pub is a fun cabaret dinner style room off the side of the main space. Great for a date or family outing.
Timothy Peierls
Bathrooms have gender-inclusive language, Joe's Pub has pretty good food, relaxed atmosphere throughout. Actually got work done in the balcony area!
Peter Weiss
My first Public Theater experience, I saw Penny Arcade at Joe's Pub. A fairly informal cabaret space that offers drinks and dinner. Very helpful and friendly staff, I will go back.
MacyLoue Corio
Had a great time support a great Haitian Artist Hervé. Food was appetizers portions and drink was expensive. Read the notations before you attend a performance. We had to spend $12 min per person for the event we attended. Wow!
Donna Hall
Socrates. Go see it. I laughed and cried. And learned so much about the man and his times and his continued relevance to our time, pointing out How, not what to think. And to never stop questioning. Very well-written. Clever, even humorous, always riveting. As one of the founding fathers of democratic principles, I'd love to see this play have an extended run in D.C. And please bring this out to the west coast !
Tim Gilligan
Solid downtown institution with a wide variety of programming that highlights the voice of the city and the country. An incredible launchpad for downtown artists that have been incubating in the galleries, studios, and performance spaces around town. Beautiful building and runs like a well oiled machine with an intimate, cozy vibe.
Comlan Avocetien
Great theater venue. I went there to attend a musical and sound and lighting were perfect. Would go back there without any hesitation.
Nico Robinson
Hadn't visited in years, what a upgrade! Super classy place with amazing live music!
Jack Catalano
Won free Shakespear in the park tickets my first time trying! One of the best plays I've ever seen and soo much fun! Amazing memory! Thank you Public Theater!! :)
N Marshall
Went to see Ain't No Mo. Great performance seating was great. The play was on the 3rd floor they do have an elevator. Restrooms and water fountain are located on the first floor. Friendly staff.
Wesley
Good performance.. too many tables jammed in together.(the food prices were high enough they could pull a number of tables out of there) The waitress was always walking in front of the stage.
FDA/ RS
Remarkable historic theater
produces a number of different series, festivals and programs each year. Opened in the magic year of 1967 mounting the world-premiere production of the musical 'Hair' as its first show. Visit and Enjoy.

This downtown institution continues to support unique and different styles and genres of performance. Tickets are at all price points or even free with their Shakespeare in the Park programs. Many events sell out, so join their email list to know first when dates are on offer.
A. Mobley
Had a great time at Joe’s Pub. Cozy event space, good acoustics. One small complaint, our server disappeared after our first round of drinks.
Joseph Muscarella
The Public Theater may be off-Broadway but don't let that deceive you. Having seen several musical first at The Public and later on Broadway I feel privileged to be a supporter of fantastic theatre.
Orit Schwartz
What's not to LOVE about The Public Theater!?!?!? The space, the productions, the history!! Joe's Pub. The Library at The Public - great food, great space, great service! All they do for the city is amazing. Shakespeare in the Park is a gift and makes summers in the city magical!!
From their website: Continuing the work of its visionary founder, Joseph Papp, The Public Theater is dedicated to developing an American theater that is accessible and relevant to all people. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today The Public engages audiences in a variety of venues – beginning with Free Shakespeare in the Park. More than five million people have visited the Delacorte Theater for free performances, making it one of New York City’s most beloved summer traditions. At its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, housing five theaters and Joe’s Pub, The Public advocates for the theater as an essential cultural force through productions of new plays, musicals, and Shakespeare that lead and frame dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. The Public’s programming also includes a range of artist and audience development initiatives including its Public Forum series, which brings together theater artists and professionals from a variety of disciplines for discussions that shed light on social issues explored in Public productions, and the Mobile Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City’s five boroughs.
William Church
Once of the great theaters in New York. Keep Broadway this is where Hamilton started, when Sweat started all of them before they got to Broadway. Get the point? See it for 25% of the price and a better theaters. My last time at a Shubert Theater on Broadway the sits were terrible. Be a New York and go to the Public.
A.J. Logan
Great venue for many cutting edge plays and performances. Subscriber prices and options are the best way to be sure you're not locked out of something that gets buzz later on.
Amber Martin
Had the honor of seeing Hamlet staring Oscar Isaac here. I expected a much larger theater and much worse seats for the price we paid but was amazingly pleased to see the intimate room with a perfect view.
Matthew Poe
One of the premiere arts institutions in New York City. The place to go for exciting, adventuresome new work; the Public has a great track record of producing Broadway hits and bringing boundary-breaking theater to the city. Terrific programming, a commitment to affordability, friendly staff, high quality productions.
Claude Campbell
One of my favorite NYC venues for live music. Intimate, not a bad seat in the house, an outstanding sound system, great food... I could go on!
Zhanna Glazenburg
Joe Papp's vision of the theater for all seems to have taken back seat to the task of chasing after the almighty dollar. Most shows the Public chooses to produce now are safe, non-offensive productions with little to say. If mindless entertainment is what you seek, this is the place for you. Yes, they do manage an occasional hit that moves to Broadway, but most of the shows leave one unimpressed. If you hope for through provoking, forward looking theater, you might want to wait till the Public rediscovers its soul.
Jarrett Ott
Super welcoming environment and quality programming.
Rod Harbin
A beautiful theatre with a more modern, edgier vibe. I am a lover of all things Broadway, but Public Theatre boasts a more discriminating audience and, therefore, theatre-going experience.
Dee Biznatch
What a cool establishment! I saw it on the Boroughs of the Dead tour focused on the west village, but I love the concept! Would LOVE to see a show here!
David Shane
Great theater with a spectacular line up of shows (usually). Far from Times Square but 10x the quality. There is also a Library bar that anyone can use for quiet drinks.
Janine Serioux
Visited Public twice within the past week. Both productions were moving and unforgettable. The venue itself is gorgeous and very well kept.
Fred Alluso
A great venue that plays host to everything from Shakespeare to Sandra Bernhard. Established in the 50's this is one of New York's greatest cultural destinations.Check the calendar for current events.
Rachel Antonio
There are so many aspect of theater you can experience in NYC. Improv, plays, musicals, off broadway… Have you ever been to a reading before? The Public Theater hosts free readings each year. They release a list of plays in production that you can watch for free. This is just the actors reading their lines while they sit in chairs on stage. Sound boring? Absolutely not. You use your imagination and incorporate that with the actor’s talents. I was literally moved to tears. Watch one if you can. You’ll be changed.
richard bernard
Good location. Clean. Knowledgeable staff. Shakespeare in the park is a local treasure! See it if you can. Great productions. (Nice restrooms when you're in the area ;-))
Brett Deutsch
We've been season ticket holders for more than a decade and have seen so many incredible shows, it's hard to remember them all. Great value too!
Kai Alexandre
Authentic NYC spot that's one of the greatest. A legendary and magnificent theatre & performance space. Run by one of the city's most well known & renowned nonprofit organizations & theatre companies.
Timothy Roberts
Like the way you can sit up front close to the show makes it more personal experience. Is a little tight between the tables but very nice a must visit.
John Byrnes
Home of Hamilton and so many others. New season new shows get in there. Security is top notch and the staff is very friendly. Very ahead of the game in terms of gender, gender neutral bathrooms for a while now.
goly goly
I was there for a really good quality, makes one think and feel so much, dance show by ZviDance.

It's a place I marked as favorite and would want to go there again
Giselle Abinader
I watched "Hamilton" here, and it was a great small theater venue to check put a show. The staff was friendly and they have snacks plus a full bar in the lobby. Nice theater!
M Mucciolo
Great production, helpful staff. Had an extra unused ticket that they took back and resold for us so someone who wanted to see great theater could without a markup.
Dylan Carusona
Just hung out in the lobby upstairs but love this place and Library Bar is very cool and reasonably priced drinks. You also never know who you might see here celebrity wise.
Edward Gourdine
Great theatre. A place for playwrights, directors and actors to develop their craft. When you develop you craft you need room to fail also.
Miroslav Blumenberg
The theater does great presentations, that said, the performance os Soft Power, with outstanding musical parts, was at the high school amateurish level, the text trite, plots and subplots shallow.
Andrea Sboner
Night of a 1000 Judys: Annual benefit for the Ali Forney Center, the largest organization helping homeless LGBTQ youth. As usual, a stellar set of performances coordinated by Justin Sayre; with the obligatory sing along at the end of "Somewhere over the rainbow..." (Still singing in my head 😁) …
Chad Benenfeld

THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE
The Public Theatre
Thru November 2nd
When we took the Lexington Avenue subway to Astor Place, we had no idea how it would set the mood for “The Fortress of Solitude”………..a terrific “coming-of-age” story set in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s……….a story exceptionally well told that follows two teenage friends, Dylan Ebdus and Mingus Rude, one white and one black, and explores issues of race and culture, self-discovery, drugs and graffiti, comic books and records.
Dylan’s parents move from a middle class neighborhood in Queens to “the hood” where he is one of the few white guys and his new best friend, Mingus Rude, protects him. After a stint as Mingus’ wing man painting graffiti on moving subways, Dylan gets into Stuyvesant High School which leads him to Berkley and a career as a music critic. Mingus winds up in prison.
Conceived and directed by Daniel Aukin and based on a novel by Jonathan Lethem, this new musical will only be at The Public Theatre until November 2nd so let me suggest you get your tickets right now. Michael Friedman (Love’s Labour’s Lost, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) is the composer/lyricist and Itamar Moses (“Boardwalk Empire,” The Four of Us) is the writer.
As for the title, for those like me who didn’t know, The Fortress of Solitude is Superman’s fictional headquarters……..the only place where he can really be himself.
Run time is 2 hours 40 minutes with a 15 minute intermission and normally Dale would be talking about how she could have cut the show. Not this time as Aukin gives himself time to tell this story in full and at the right pace. It is true to itself and the audience, mostly middle aged and white, loved it.
Bravo to everyone involved.......great content, music, dance, staging………… it was just one of those nights in the theatre.
Kalle Westerling
