Reviews of Delacorte Theater

We saw As You Like It in the park at the Delacorte. The conditions were perfect so that probably enhanced the experience. The venue is quite nice. The production was amazingly well put together. The seats are not the most comfortable which was the only really negative about the show. The staff was very helpful and patient when moving thousands of people into the theater. Great opportunity to see Shakespeare in the park.

Today was opening night. Public theater, love that. The cast and show were great! Loved the performance. The lighting was good. Could've been a bit louder though. Seats are not comfortable at all...
one of the staff/ volunteer was very rude, I didn't like that at all...he was taking everything to personal.
But overall definitely and highly recommend.

Such a fun experience at Shakespeare in the Park. It's a free event but you have to either wait for tickets or get on the lottery online. Venue is great, you cab bring your own food and drinks as long as there are no glass containers. It's a great summer in NYC activity.

Stunning little theatre in Central Park. Signage from the subway is easy to follow, staff are helpful when it came to collecting tickets and showing you to your seats and the seats had a surprisingly good amount of legroom which is so often a problem for tall people.
You have to be lucky to win lottery tickets but do try your best. It's such a wonderful experience.
Alex Fielding-Smith
We got online for the last night of performances of the Shakespeare in the park. Staff were super friendly and we got our tickets quite quickly once the box office opened. The show was amazing that evening, staff were friendly and helpful and the play was worth the wait in line. Props to public works, theatre is for everyone

You can't call yourself a true New Yorker if you haven't enjoyed an evening of Shakespeare in the park. The theatre itself is majestic and the productions are spectacular. Small word of warning for the faint of heart: seats are small and uncomfortable, especially for taller people, and make sure to bring or wear insect repellent: the mosquitoes are vicious here.

There maybe no New York City experience more quintessential than Shakespeare in the park. For decades the public theater has successfully delivered on its promise to give New Yorkers accessible, high-quality theater. If you have not spent a day in the park waiting for tickets, if you have not become a patron, then at. At whatever level you can, you must support this theater and see Shakespeare in the park.
Jose Lopez
Dope venue, if you’re fortunate enough to win Shakespeare in the Park tickets you’ll definitely enjoy the moon rising over the stage as the crickets chirp and fireflies circle the stage. Def bring some bug repellent tho
Alton Finley
How can you not love Shakespeare in the park? Public works show made it even better!!! Was fortunate to catch opening night of "As You Like It". Only drawback to the evening was the rain. Thankfully it (the rain) held off until almost the very end. Kudos to the stage crew for attempting to squeegee the stage and to the actors for continuing on despite the water falling from the sky.

I was privileged enough to visit this year and see the production of Richard III which was fantastic! Delecourt Theater has been doing it for 60 years now! They have been enriching and entertaining hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers over the years and they're still doing it well. This is an experience you should give yourself at least once.
Edward Espino (txboyinnyc)
Free public theater that allows guests to enter a lottery for a chance to win free tickets! With the Belvedere castle as a backdrop this is the perfect date spot or just the perfect theater experience.
Featured actors and non professional actors from the community are the stars!

Gorgeous amphitheater in middle of Central Park, with a gorgeous backdrop of Belvedere castle and trees around. Have seen a few Shakespeare in the Park shows here with last one being Merry Wives. Loved the production and theater. Must visit.

Merry Wives 2021 Season. The performance was excellent! Acting was fantastic. Everything exceeded my expectations for an outdoor play. FUN! Only 1 week left so if you are reading this you might be out of luck for this season. Can get most of the info on line. The theater is great, lighting well done, sound is good. Set design was impressive. Surprised me. It's just a great example of what can be good in this world. And a free play of this calibre is just another example of what New Yorkers can sustain. Of course you can make a donation to support. Please do if it is within your means. Hard outdoor seats is the only negative.
Gloria Jacqueline
Went to see As You Like It and it was amazing. Definitely exceeded my expectations. If you can get tickets, GO!

So I saw the theater show. It was original… It was so good I was so moved… The person I went to the show with was so amazed they kept covering their face. The tickets were free. We sat front and center.
Santiago Grijalva
Amazing energy and attention from the staff... The seating isn't too comfortable for 6"+ height people and the seats weren't too wide, a snug fit to say the least.

Such a fun experience at Shakespeare in the Park. It's a free event but you have to either wait for tickets or get on the lottery online. Venue is great, you cab bring your own food and drinks as long as there are no glass containers.

Well-set-up outdoor theater. I saw a Shakespeare in the Park performance here. The staff of the Public Theater were well-organized and made finding the seat and getting around the theater otherwise easy. The chairs were not the biggest, but that’s not so different from many NYC theaters.
Elaine Casey
Went to see shakespeare in the park, lovely theatre, great sound.

The Public Theater performs “Shakespeare in the Park here every year. Free to the public by way of online lottery and day of performance first come in lineup. Excellent talents and exquisite scenes and sets. Open air theater is comfortable unless rain or cold descends. Beverages and light food are available there as well as restrooms just outside the theater. After or before enjoy the park and frog pond.

Review Date 7/29/17 - A Midsummer's Night Dream. Entertaining and fun. The magic of this theater never gets old.
Review Date 6/18/17: The show is free. Tickets are distributed at 12PM. Senior citizens have a separate line in the front.
Just go and experience the magic of the theatre because it never fails. Thankfully the plays in the last few years have been wonderful. I can't recommend it enough.
Each person can get two tickets and you must stay in line the entire time. Bathrooms are at the theatre and there's a deli that delivers food regularly. Food And Drinks are allowed in the theater, but no glass containers allowed.
Generally speaking you want to get in line by 6 AM for 'good' productions; for productions with high profile celebrities cast members you need to get in line by 5AM; for less popular shows you can get in line as late as 7AM, maybe later.
The staff takes pictures of the line because there is a strict policy about holding a place for a larger group and the folks in line with you will speak up to enforce this rule.
There are digital tickets via lottery online, but you're guaranteed tickets if you wait in line as prescribed.
You should bring a blanket, a long slave swearer/sweatshirt because the park can get cold and you'll want to be able to lay down on the grass to catch some sleep or relax as you wait for tickets to be handed out.
Lastly, there's a large rock outcrop close to the 83rd street lamp-post. Central Park lamp posts have numbers and an 'E' or 'W' to indicate East or West. The number corresponds to the street. This outcrop is 'The Rock of Hope'. Generally, if you're in line close to this rock you're hoping to get tickets. GENERALLY. you can always ask the staff who counts patrons on line what are the chances of getting tickets.
Al Cohen
Iconic open air theater to see Shakespeare in the Park. The hard part is getting the free tickets - who was 6-7 hours to wait on line for tix. If you have a connection let me know! Otherwise, consider donating to get your tix because it's a must-do NYC experience.
Zach Graber
This theater is a gift to the city. There is nothing quite like sitting under the stars in Central Park and watching world class Shakespeare. And!!! ITS FREE!!! (if you are willing to wait in a very long line.) I recommend you pack folding chairs, books, and snacks and make a day of it (get there early.) Another great thing about Shakespeare in the park is that it is BYOB! (no glass containers.) I have seen so many great show here, and I am moved every time. I can't recommend this highly enough.
Shard Milne
We saw a fantastic free Shakespeare in the Park performance, put on by Public Theater. The venue is a great outdoor amphitheatre which offers beer, wine, and snacks. Highly recommend visiting (and getting your tickets before 5pm)!
Hilton Webb
A great night in celebration of our friend Jamie Maleszka for all her work as Director of Creative Arts @ The Fortune Society.

We saw yesterday’s performance of Merry Wives of Windsor and it was really great to be back in this theatre. We chose the socially distanced seats and it was the right choice! Lots of people took their masks off while eating and drinking; therefore we were so happy to sit just a little bit further away from fellow visitors. There was no intermission and the play finished around 10pm.
Caleb Fischer
This is the place to see Shakespeare in the park. It's a little easier to get tickets now that they have a digital lottery so no more lining up for hours in the morning! This is an outdoor theater so be prepared for the weather (no umbrellas during showtime) - shows will go on as long as the weather is not dangerous. The productions only run during the summer, and they feature some of the best actors and actresses. Seats are reasonably comfortable, which is important since you will in them for a few hours.
Camille Chaustre McNally
The delacourt theater is one of the treasures of new York City, primarily because of its hosting of the Shakespeare in the park programs that allow the public the opportunity to see some of the great works of English literature.
The open air venue is lovely, and you sit in a theater surrounded by trees that belie it's location in the heart of the city.

Fantastic place to see Shakespeare in the Park. My fav NY experience!
Alyssa D.
So grateful for this establishment and everything it does to enrich the people of NYC. Keep it up! I had a wonderful time as usual. Staff is always excellent and theater is beautifully maintained.
Nancy
If you are lucky enough to snag tickets to the Shakespeare in the Park production of As You Like It, you will not be disappointed. The production is phenomenal and the theatre space is magical. NYC's gift to society is the opportunity to see live theatre. If you haven't gone before, don't wait any longer.
Supriya Trimbake
Wonderful experience to watch the play in Central Park. Don't miss it when you visit NYC
Jeff Wheeler
Shakespeare in the park is amazing! We saw Richard III, and this is the first version I’ve actually liked! Amazing stage production, great performances by all the actors, and an incredible location looking out over Belvedere castle. Couldn’t recommend it enough!
Maribelle Vazquez
Watched Shakespeare in the Park's As You Liked It. The organizers did a wonderful job of getting us to our seats. The play was excellent. The evening weather perfect.
Suzy Gharibian
Not a typical play in a 'park,' but a full outdoor amphitheater in the middle of Central Park. The stage, the lighting, and sound system all look amazing and state of the art. If you're in NY, put this on your itinerary.
Philip Chang
Saw the 2021 Shakespeare in the Park - Merry Wives of Windsor. A magical experience and a lovely performing space in the middle of the Park
S. Nathan
Definitely a life experience. Wonderful set, intriguing reinterpretation, fantastic atmosphere. Shakespeare in the park is second to none.

I had the pleasure of seeing As You Like It starring our very own Ato B-W. It was fabulous and an evening well spent. This review will focus on how said evening almost never happened.
We were late to pick up out tickets which were released at 730. Seeing as we were in town for such a short period of time, and our only purpose was to see Ato perform, we decided to join the line and wait. Let me tell you there were at least 50 people in line. The theater staff worked so hard to get everyone in. Where we were seventh in line to be let in, a lovely guy named Russell came and thanked all of us for waiting and announced that there were no more tickets. When I tell you, GUTTED doesn’t begin to describe the feeling. And almost in a taunting manner, we hear Ato singing and resign ourselves to sitting outside and listening to the show so we could pretend we saw it.
We asked some questions about how to get tickets for the following night and after about 15 minutes started walking away. Cue Russell. He came running up to us like a super hero waving two tickets that his manager, Chris, helped him find. You all have no idea how appreciative we were that you went ABOVE and BEYOND and saved us the shame of admitting we lost out on seeing the show after months of planning. Russell and Chris the manager, thank you! Not all heroes wear capes.
Raisa Maria
Shakespeare in the park its always magical, but the delacorte theatre is gorgeous, the bathrooms were clean and had toilet paper.
Had a great night!
Tess Q
I love this place, try to see any and every production any and every year -
Some shows are better than others, but I always appreciate the efforts of The Public and free theatre. 👍 …

A NYC staple. A singular adventure. Kudos to Mr. Kenny Leon for not merely modernizing Shakespeare's "Much Ado... " but challenging his audience to recognize (be it by design or chance) those who find themselves numbered in "...the Watch... " have a duty to expose mischief and villainy. In addition, those directly affected (while not reacting as vehemently as Beatrice) should have an equally emotive response to such potentially ruinous acts.
Billy Kendrick
Saw Shakespeare in the Park performance of 12th Night. The theater is very accessible by everyone and accommodates patrons of all ages and abilities. Before the show we were encouraged to go in stage and interact with the performers. The theater itself has food and beverages for sale and many people spend time at the restaurant having drinks before the show begins. It is a pretty intimate setting and there isn't really a bad seat. It is outdoors so weather has an impact on the show but it also makes for beautiful surroundings. We have been there before and will be there again. It's one of the must do activities in the city.
Yakir Pollak
Very amusing Shakespeare play we saw at the theater. Organization is great, location and atmosphere are superb. You should check it out!
Israel/Izzy Cepeda
it was a phenomenal experience the actors and the performance itself was original the cast was great and profound. Classic Ive seen nothing like it & highly recommended to any and all ages( they take Shakespeare and bring ...it and it becomes so understandable and relatable to our current. It really pays to be a patriot and support your locals especially when it comes to cultural awareness and your support it also would not do justice to this performance if I didn't include the amazing performance by the children staff Theatre of New York they were absolutely astounding as a part of this production.
Kathleen Murray
Won the lottery for tickets on my 2nd try! Weather was perfect. We had a picnic on a stone ledge outside the theater. Their Covid protocols were well done. Merry Wives was a fun production! Great to see the flag atop Belvedere Castle. A very good evening in Central Park!
Anwita Ghosh
Went there for Free Shakespeare in the Park event. Felt like I'm back in the 1500s, enjoying some good ol' play at Stratford-upon-Avon. Great seating arrangement and a thoroughly enjoyable communal experience.
samuel shurtleff
One of the best places to see a performance in all of NYC. Home of The Public's Shakespeare In The Park, I have seen many shows in this wonderful venue. The seats are very comfortable, and the view of the stage is great from every section. The lighting and sound are always spot on perfect. The setting is very beautiful, in the heart of Central Park with Shakespeare's Gardens and Belvedere Castle nearby. The snacks and drinks are good, priced a bit high, but fairly normal for this kind of venue. If you get the chance to see a show here, do it!
Tobias Shaw
Great “free” things in New York City can be hard to come by, but the Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte is a wonderful not-so-hidden gem. The shows hit more often than they miss, but regardless on a pleasant evening it is always a nice way to spend a few hours.
Rachel Abrahams
Shakespeare in the Park is amazing! This location in the middle of Central Park is beautiful!
Lisa Taylor
One of our favorite places in all of NYC. Always a great night out at the theater and tonight we finally got to see our first Publicworks production, on its 10th anniversary. Was Shaina Taub's musical adaptation of AS YOU LIKE IT and it was so much fun and such a great community building experience. On a perfect, cool August night, too. Bravo!
Olivia Rousso
Great theater in Central Park, Shakespeare in the Park is a must do here! (But be warned, the seats are bun-numbing, might be a good idea to bring a cushion of sorts.)
Magikarp Boy
Open air theater in Central Park that produces free plays and musicals available to everyone. Tickets are distributed many ways including rush on site.
Genesis Nieves
There is nothing quite like a little Shakespeare under the stars in the crisp New York summer air. Or, conversely, being rained on during intense productions. I visit every year and it always seems to get better as time passes. A hallowed summer tradition that can't be beat and it's free!
Alexandros Patsikos
This must be my favorite outdoor activity in New York! It's amazing how after all these decades they still keep it free for the public. People may think it's hard to get tickets but I find it to be not true. Every year I get to see a play either from winning lottery tickets or doing the line for 1-2 hours. Not a big deal. Specially cause is so rewarding in the end!
m m
See the best free theater the city has to offer. Exceptional staged performances of modernized, relevant Shakespearean scripts.
William McKinnon
Shakespeare in the park - Much Ado About Nothing. The play was amazing; an all black casts. Danielle Brooks from Orange Is the New Black play Beatrice.
Helga N
So nice and a beautiful view from every seat.
Leeta Gato
I won tickets from the lottery. I picked them up at the box office with my ID and no problems! They have food, drinks (including alcohol), and snacks at the concession stand before you enter. There is accessible seating for those with disabilities, but it’s inside the park a little ways so it could be an issue to get there. There are paved roads and walkways to the entrance.
Orion Talley
Saw the final dress rehearsal for 12th Night. It was unbelievable. Amazing cast. Amazing costumes. Incredible musical numbers. It was one of the most magical experiences I've had in my 10 years in New York.
James F
A beautiful open air theatre usually used for Shakespeare in the park. Stadium seating but you should think about bring something soft for your tuckus. They're plastic. Hard plastic.
Daniel Kadyrov
Shakespeare in the park (Merry Wives) is a must see. It was a great performance and the set was beautiful.
Velma Maynard-Jacobs
Helpful and friendly staff. Seats were more comfortable than expected for an amphitheatre setting. Rose' wine was sweet and yummy!
Nicholas Feitel
The show is free, food and beer is reasonable and it’s NYC in the cool late summer evening. What else do you want? Well maybe a raccoon might run on stage. I always like that.
Benjamin Hammond
Shakespeare in the park is a wonderful way to spend an evening in NYC. We saw Richard the Third, and had a wonderful time enjoying an amazing performance.
Willie Sanford
Shakespeare In The Park... loved "As You Like It"
Dvir Koenigstein
Shakespeare in the park is back! You can not imagine how wonderful it is to safely watch a live show - you need to see for yourself. And it's free! Come early to pick up your tickets as it get rather busy before the show. Restrooms are available right next to the theater. You can find a food/drink cart nearby but other than that you are right in the center of the culinary universe of the upper east and upper west sides.
Melianthe Kines
Shakespeare in the Park is a fantastic experience, and it’s free (if you can get a ticket.)
George Koshy
Went to see The Merry Wives of Windsor, the latest (August 2021) production through the Shakespeare in the Park program that's held in Central Park every summer. We had great weather and our seats turned out to be close to the front and center. We've seen a number of plays through this program and it's a great setting.
Will Brown
Amazing showcase of public theater. Watch world class productuctions under the stars for free. One of the things that make living in this city worthwhile.
Kamlesh Parmar
Over five million people have attended more than 150 free productions of Shakespeare and other classical works and musicals at the Delacorte Theater since its opening in 1962.
Tickets to Shakespeare in the Park are free and can only be obtained the day of a performance. At 12 noon tickets are distributed, two per person, at the Delacorte to the line of people that usually springs up early in the morning when the park opens at 6AM. People have been known to camp out at the park entrance closest to the theater, 81st & Central Park West, to get tickets for that day's performance. Anyone 5 years old and older can obtain and are required to have a ticket should they wish to see the show. The 2013 Season features a new policy that one person can only obtain two tickets for two performances of one production.
Tamar A
There’s nothing like seeing a show in Ventral
Park!
Toni-Ann Runs
Shakespeare in the Park is the quintessential NYC summer experience. Easy to access and always free, this is something every NYer should take advantage of.
Michael A. Benitez
Merry Wives was awesome! My first Free Shakespeare in the Park production in over ten years, and it did not disappoint. The Delacorte Theater is the perfect open air performance space for these sorts of things -- not to be missed!
Nicole Harmon
It was an open air theatre shaped in an arc. Due to covid there were seats blocked for those who didn't have the vaccine. For those who had the vaccine you could have been packed together like sardines but you weren't. The bathrooms were open and available. The stage itself was set up for Shakespeare in the Park. The tale was The Merry Wives. For me the seats were not too uncomfortable but I did catch a slight sneeze or two. We are not allowed to take pictures but it was a nice experience despite being hot. And for once the only problem we had would have been or was with each other.
Mess7o
great place! very cool and professional actors! beautiful performance, must see!
Romario R. Ricketts
Watched Othello here over the summer. Long lines as expected however area was clean and staff was very helpful.
David Silverberg
The show was absolutely magnificent anyone could see that a huge amount of work went into the production.
Bradley Baker
Great experience. We loved that we could plan ahead, knowing we won the tickets on Goldstar a week ahead of time. Professional, top knotch, theater with a beautiful backdrop. Watching a bird soar in the background, feeling the breeze blow through the audience, a gorgeous moon glowing orange overhead. We saw Merry Wives and the cast was great, namely; Susan Kelepchi Watson and Pascale Armand as the Merry Wives. There are full capacity sections where all provided proof of vaccine, socially distanced sections where people are spread out. All were asked to wear masks, except when seated eating food (food and water was allowed in a small bag or cooler - check website for other health, safety information and what is allowed.
Ian Dunn
Beautiful outdoor arena in Central Park. I was here to see Shakespeare in the Park and had a lovely time. The seats had a great view of the stage and the performance was truly entertaining. It was so nice to be in this hidden nook of Central Park to see theater. Will hopefully be back! The only downside was that the seats weren't extremely comfortable, but the show was free so I can hardly complain!
Daniel Dulitz
Accessible seating! Many excellent performances. Pretty when the weather is good.
Antonio Serrano
Went to see much ado about nothing. The show was excellent and the theatre is nice. If you get the chance try to get tickets.
IMO Bespoke
Nice experience during Shakespeare In The Park this summer!
Ticketing staff very accommodating and efficient. A must if you are in NY during summer or warm season.
Tate O
Shakespeare in the parks. Richard the Third - classics for all. I loved the ambience, the audience, the magic of Shakespeare in Central Park...
Greg Shields
Went to see Shakespeare in the Park on a recent trip. Had to line up for tickets in the morning, but they were free! Free live theater in NYC?...How do you top that? The play itself (Coralianus) was excellent. This will definitely be on my list of things to do the next time I visit New York city in the summer.
Jay B
Shaina Taub's musical adaptation of 12th Night was AMAZING!!! (and I don't like musicals!)
Kristen (Gypsy Monkey)
Was lucky enough to score two tickets to Shakespeare in the Park and boy , was it an amazing experience! One of the many moments I get a tear in my eye and rejoice in the fact that I get to live here . Prices for food and drinks were very reasonable accompanied by a decent amount of choices . All areas of staff could not have been any more friendly. A night forever in my heart .
Emily Hopper
We went to the (free) Shakespeare in the park show here, which was fabulous! The theatre itself has a few queuing issues, eg. the queue to get into one of the entrances overlapped with the queue for the bar; the women's bathroom facilities are much, much too small to deal with the size of the audience (so make sure to go before you get there). However, our experience was pretty seamless, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The seats are quite comfy, and it looks like there aren't any obstructed view seats in the house.
Ethan C
Home to the Public's free Shakespeare in the Park, this spot is gem in the heart of the city. Performances are typically rain or shine, and are welcoming to diverse crowds experiencing their first of five hundredth Shakespeare performance. Sight lines to the stage are extremely well thought out, so don't worry about sitting close the back. Keep in mind the seats are plastic if you're prone to back pain, you may want to bring a small cushion.
Oscar
Attended Merry Wives show for free Shakespeare in the Park. AMAZING show. Very well done. As good or better than Broadway shows.
Jim Mannoia
Great place, don't get seats in section E though because the angle is bad. A little bit of excitement when the heavens opened and it poured and poured. Still waiting to find out if the play will continue. Lots of fun, didn't need to go to the ticket booth four hours before they opened at noon. I could have arrived at 11:30. But probably on weekends and times when it's guaranteed to be dry that would not be true. Certainly worth the visit.
Katie Hallock
There is no excuse not to come here to see Shakespeare in the Park. All you have to do is pack food and a chair or blanket to wait for your free tickets. And every show I've seen there (with the exception of one that I'm willing to ignore) has been absolutely amazing. Usually, the cast is full of big name actors from the stage and screen.
I would give a heads up that the seats aren't super comfy. So you might want to bring your own pillow if you have any back problems!
Donna Fell
How awesome!!? An outdoor theater with FREE shows!! And the talent is amazing. After enjoying the show, consider donating to the arts to keep free theater possible!
Kristin Parker
Saw Merry Wives here and it was sure good to be back at the Delacorte Theater after the pandemic shutdown. This is a wonderful part of NYC and not to be missed if you can score tickets.
peiheng tsai
Public theater always have great production in the summer.
Tony Simotes
Shakespeare in the Park. A NYC tradition and pure delight. A remarkable theater that has entertained New Yorkers and it's guests for more than 40 years of free performances!
Fr. Gregory Chisholm, S.J.
Had not been here in years. Enjoyed my return immensely! Saw premier of "Merry Wives of Windsor", a funny and very accessible take on Shakespeare.
D l
I was able to see Shakespeare in the Park here on numerous occasions. Luckily it was nice weather out when I went. Pretty much all the seats here give you a great views. You just have to hope that it is nice weather outside though. Likewise, you have to hope that it is not too buggy outside or too windy. Bring a light denim jacket if it gets windy.
Laura Jones
Saw what was my first show, hopefully of many, at this beautiful space last night.
Mike H.
Great outdoor theater (run by the Public Theater) with wonderful sight lines. Can't pretend that I've liked everything here, but quality of the shows is typically strong. And it is free to those with the time and patience to wait in line (or lucky enough to win an online lottery). Catching a show here is certainly a great New York experience.
maxximus787
Great space where you get to watch Shakespeare in the park. They do a wonderful job on the set every year. The performances are always great. Definitely worth seeing at least once!
Lance Coadie Williams
The show Merry wives was Magnificent and so much fun. If you are large person, please be mindful...the seats are crammed and very narrow.
Jenna McKinney
The atmosphere at Shakespeare in the Park is so unique in that, they are using exceptionally simple set designs, and letting the actors shine. Talent like this so rare anymore, look at our obsession with Marvel films. This production was the opposite of all that nonsense, and truly a breath of fresh air.
Kyle Weber
While I've only seen one play here (2016's Troilus & Cressida production, which was excellent), I'm a huge fan of this theater's contribution to the city (providing free entertainment to a broad mix of tourists and locals). I also appreciate that they've added a number of ways to request Shakespeare in the Park tickets, so locals no longer have to brave the multi-hour wait in Central Park to get tickets (having done this, I can say that it is honestly not that bad). The building itself is quite nice as well, and a wealth of restaurants and other museums surround this theater that would interest visitors to NYC.
Gerald Painkras
Free public theater. You can get tickets by queuing up early on the day for evening shows or signing up on TodayTix app for the lottery or through sponsor firms who get tickets.
The performances are great, ushers helpful. The seats are cramped ( made for 5' 4' or smaller). The bathrooms can get busy during the break in the shows. The location is great. I lounged around for an hour before the show. A recommended experience for those who like theater.
Minh T. Nguyen
Every year the Shakespeare in the Park public series provides free performances at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. While you might have to stand in line for at least 5 hours, it's worth doing this once a year. The theater, ahem I mean the theatre, is at a picture perfect location in pretty much the center of Central Park, with the Belvedere Castle as the backdrop. Have a picnic before the performances, and indulge yourself in some play or drama. Not all of them are Shakespearean in nature though. In the Summer of 2012, we went to see Sondheim's "In the Woods", which is a funny amalgamation of classic fairy tales made into musical that went on to win a series of Tony Awards. Despite being free, the production design was of high-caliber featuring an actual (small) orchestra and an impressive set design. We'll do definitely do this again next year.
Hondo Martinez
Saw Shakespeare's Merry Wives, quite the pleasant experience.
Theodore Nicholas
This is a great outdoor theatrical experience! From waiting on line to get your free tickets to whatever Shakespeare (or on occasion another classic playwright like Brecht or Chekov) production that is showing that evening, to the actual performance itself, it is a full-day event usually. I've seen Mother Courage here. Romeo and Juliet. Into the Woods. And I've loved loved loved every time.
Jamie Delson
I have been going to The Delacorte for 6 decades and regard it as one of NYC'S greatest attractions. The chance to see high quality Shakespeare productions every summer has become an important ritual for those who stay behind while others flee the heat and humidity. Because of limited runs and limited seating availability, obtaining tickets can be a daunting proposition except for those with access to seat reservations (financial support has it's benefits). If you have the time to wait on line there are actual free seats available. That is why this gets 4 stars instead of 5.
Matthew Smith
I've wanted and tried to get tickets for Shakespeare in the Park every year that I've lived in the city. It was a dream come true when I finally got tickets to the opening night this season. The outdoor theater is intimate despite or possibly because of it's openness and the hour and a half Comedy of Errors was a joy, easily one of the better shows I've seen in the city and at the low low price of Free it can't be beat! Definitely worth trying year in and year out for tickets!
Daniel Caffarel
This is a very cool outdoor theater. Shakespeare in the park is an incredible opportunity for some free access to amazing acting. Of course, I'm not willing to do the 7 hours in line thing, so you have to find other ways to get tickets. And there are other ways, without paying, so just do some looking. My other complaint is the statues out front look a little off. The women portrayed are so skinny that I think they'd have to be hospitalized.
Lauren Solina
Such a great experience! Even better performance. Cast was stellar! Loved the vision of Shakespeare. Very timely.
stephanie Handler
A very good show. The distanced pod seating was mentally very comfortable, in these trying times, and the fireflies were reminders of my childhood in my backyard.
Becky Curran Kekula
Free Shakespeare in the Park all Summer long. It's a great outdoor theater space for a warm summer night. The sound system works great and the entertainment is even better. Eat before heading to the theater. You can grab a hot dog or one of their other snacks but it isn't filling enough for a meal.
Kyle Leneweaver
What can you say, free Shakespeare in the park is awesome!! Takes time to win the lottery to go but it's worth the wait! Also delacorte theater allows BYOB and the entire staff is friendly and helpful! For the ladies there are very limited bathroom options near this theater so plan ahead
Lisa Monaco
Great place to watch a show! Keep in mind that if you're sitting in the full capacity section, you need to show vaccination proof. Bring water and a fan for very hot nights
Diane Bondareff
A NYC experience not to be missed
Savitri Balram
Fun public theater located in the heart of Central Park. I had the opportunity to see a Midsummer Night's Dream, and it was an absolute delight. Won the tickets via the online lottery. Would definitely recommend you trying to get your hand on tickets for this amazing experience.
Jason Nadler
All of the things I love about this place are reasons to dislike it. Waiting on line for free tickets sounds awful, and it can be, but generally it's a great communal experience. Tickets are handed out at noon, but the line can start well before 6am when the park opens. The plays are in "previews" for 2 weeks and then open for 2 weeks, so the runs are short. It's open air, so weather will determine if performances even happen, and helecopters can momentarily drown out the stage (well, that's a real gripe). And did I mention Shakespeare!?
Because of this it takes a full day to see a single show, but they're given out day of, first come, so if you're willing to get there early and "tough it out" it's absolutely worth the time and experience.
Jeff Strange (Strange Soundz)
Incredible show! The rain stopped it for a few minutes but the performance was still stellar!
Haydee Villanueva
Not a bad theater considering it's outdoors. They should give you a napkin or something to dry the seat before you sit after it has rained though. Seems like all seats are pretty good seats. But being outdoors you have to worry about the weather. Luckily I brought a sweater cause the wind was blowing a lot and making me cold. Also there are so many insects/bugs around and landing/crawling on you or biting you so that's annoying. Definitely use bug spray.
Kisha Miles
still a great place to visit.
pros: excellent acting (by everyone but othello) food was good, virgin drink was tasty. friendly staff
cons: seating - I was in line early enough that we should've been seated in the center but because I wasn't asked and didn't offer where to seat us we were stage right. food was over priced.
Adam
Love the venue and location. The lines can be a little annoying but such is life at a theater. It would be nice if there were some hot drinks served at intermission to warm you up during the cooler months.
Jared Garfinkel
Went to Shakespeare in the Park with my girlfriend. It was great. The acting and acoustics were excellent. Get there before 7 am on weekends to make sure you get free tickets!
George Curran
The socially distanced seats were the best I have had in all the years of attending plays there. But, the fact of the matter is that there is not a bad seat in the house.
Vance McAlister
Best outdoor venue for a play I have experienced. The sound and lighting was professional and the snack and food options were nice, with minimal lines. The process of waiting in line in the morning for free tickets was actually a nice experience as well.
Alex Black
Shakespeare in the park is the most accessible Shakespeare in the country. Well done Shakespeare doesn't come for free, yet the public gives both several times, every year. Do not miss squander this opportunity if you live in the City.
Kenya Allmond
This is a really nice amphitheater with a beautiful view of Belvedere Castle, which just seemed very appropriate for Shakespeare in the Park. All the seats have a good view of the stage and there are many snack options available at concessions. Just don't get lost trying to find from the east side of Central Park.
Wayne Mitchell
We watched the free & very well reviewed modern dress production of the Shakespearean classic Much Ado About Nothing at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It was amazing & the actors were spectacular.
Benjamin Walker
What a gem! This place is SUCH a wonderful place to see a show, and it's free, if you can believe it! The people who run the free ticket operation are very fairness-oriented, as they should be, so the whole process of standing in line (forever) and getting seats whose location that are in accordance with your spot in line, and then seeing the show later than night, in a packed-to-the-(nonexistent)-rafters (it is an open-air theatre, after all) is an exciting and inspiring all-day event.
Caroline Anaya
I attended a Friday night showing of Cymbeline as part of the 2015 Shakespeare in the Park series. One of my favorite New York moments was seeing a free performance on a perfect summer night in the most amazing setting of Central Park. Every seat is a good seat in the theater. You can even see the Central Park castle in the background of the stage. Tip: I lucked out getting tickets by going to an in person lottery in the afternoon at Astor Place Theater. Look online for more info about borough lotteries and online lotteries.
Franck Cushner (Money in the Bank)
Shakespeare in the park is always a treat. Just stop being political and entertain me.
Ira Gershenhorn
Great except row x was too tight.
Saw As You Like It. Amazing production. Should not be missed.
Juan David Figueroa
This theatre has been 100% free for the public since its inception. It has demonstrated the fearless nature of New York’s freedom seekers. It is the perfect example of what a coordinated effort to unify a city through an art form looks like. If you have the privilege of winning a spot to see one of their summer shows, don’t take it for granted!
Jesse Moore Perrin
My fiancé and I saw our first Shakespeare in the park last night, and what a great event it was; this venue was clean, quaint and very modern. I would highly recommend to anyone seeing a show at this theater!!
Michael Bego
Fantastic outdoor theater for "free" Shakespeare plays, esp on balmy nights. Free if you want to sleep overnight on the ground waiting for tickets. The alternative is to get corporate tickets or go onto Craigslist: many people wait in line for the tickets and turn around and sell them for $20-30 often, a great deal.
Rangga Bhuana
Had the fortune to watch the 40th anniversary celebration of Liz Swedos' Runaways directed by Sam Pinkleton and choreographed by Ani Taj here. This place nice. Open air theater in the park used by The Public Theater for their Shakespeare in the Park performances. The leg room for the seats is just enough for my height (182 cm or 5 foot 11 3/4 inches). The view towards the stage is great. Shows here are mostly free but you have to line up for tickets. Some do it from the morning until close to the evening show (08.00 PM).
John Byrnes
A piece of New York history and culture, the Delecorte is an outdoor amphitheater hidden within the trees of Central Park across the street from the Museum of Natural History (which closes at 5:45 conveniently an 1:45 before Shakespeare in the Park, make a day of it?) and home to the world famous Shakespeare in the Park, a 2-show-a-summer free theater program hosted by the public theater. The program celebrates free access to culture and the ever present universal nature of Shakespeare's works. Information on how to obtain tickets is available on the publics website, but the process ranges from online raffles to early morning first come first serve line ups at the public, or even the last second standby line for those tickets left unclaimed by the time doors open. If ur visiting in summer it's well worth a stop, and if you live here, what are you waiting for?? Security and usher staff is also incredibly helpful :)
eva forde
Saw Shakespeare in the park there 3x. They run a tight ship so everything is clean and organized. Staff are friendly and helpful as well.
Greig Roselli
The Delacorte Theater is the home base of the Public Theater's Summer production of Shakespeare in the Park. Each Summer, based on Joe Papp's vision, the theater company produces two Shakespearean plays. This Summer the theater hosted productions of Othello and Twelfth Night. Tickets to a performance are free - with a catch. You either have to wait in line on the day of the performance (and snag two tickets) or feel lucky and submit an entry to the online lottery on TodaysTix. There is also a standby line. The theatre is an open-air auditorium - so there are no bad seats - and the back of the stage abuts the Turtle Pond (with Belvedere Castle in the background). Tip: if rain is in the forecast prepare yourself for a wet and soggy night at the Delacorte. The show must go on. The park closes at midnight, so unless it's severe thunder and lightning, the actors will do their best to finish the play no matter how many raindrops fall. Bring a poncho (or buy one for 15 dollars at the gift shop).
Alek Lozan
Must visit! Spend all day in the park!
richard bernard
Love this theater! If you can attend a performance at this theater, do it! Outdoors in Central Park. Shakespeare in the Park during the summer. Great staff. Great productions. Great casting. Public Theater affiliated.
Rashmee Shenvi
Saw Shakespeare in the park...amazing performance the theatre was good they had stadium seating. It rained in the beginning of the show and luckily they sold ponchos there though they were expensive I'm glad they had them.
Jordan P
Great Shakespeare in the Park night, despite the fact that it pissed down rain, it’s an absolute must do.
Carl Adams
Even in the rain, the venue is fine and dandy. As a public space, this NYC-OWNED open air theater is truly praiseworthy. It helped that the program we saw, "Gospel at Colonus" is a terrific event; the theater nonetheless is superb.
Ericka Clinton
Very nice staff. The event i attended got rained on and many guests including myself were given ponchos. Beautiful space.
Edward Sullivan
Clean and safe the Delacorte Theater is a New York institution. Featuring productions of Shakespeare in the park, free of charge to citizens and visitors alike. All featured in a magnificent out door setting.
Doreen Ng
Beautiful, one of kind theatre; no pictures to be taken for their patented stage. Wonderful performances including some of US greatest actors and actresses. Such as the great Al Pachino and Anne Hathaway.
Dominique Thomas
Lovely outdoor venue for Shakespeare in the Park. Event was well organized and staff were attentive.
Spencer spencer
This is worth the wait in beautiful Central park for tickets for whatever they have scheduled for the season. I have been here more times than I can count. From Brazilian troops doing Midsummer Nights Dream in Portuguese to Tracy Ullman in Taming of the Shrew to the great Shakespearean actor Kevin Kline in Measure For Measure. If your from New York or from out of town do not miss this during the season!
Chintan Desai
Saw Shakespeare in the Park. What a wonderful show and amazing troupe of talented young actors. A truly special experience and suggest everyone who gets a chance to go to the show
Kenny Li
What an amazing venue for outdoor theater! A true gem of NYC if you are lucky enough to score some tickets (they're free!).
Vinod Reddy
Delightful place to spend the evening. High quality theatre in a lovely setting. Lots of precautions being taken in Covid times.
Arthur Smile
Best Show In NY if you can get the tickets.
THE GOOD: FREE, Amazing Actors
THE BAD: Outdoor so weather can be a factor. Also NYPD helicopters sporadically ruin the show by flying by
THE UGLY: Getting the tickets (make sure you're online no later than 7 AM that morning to pick up the tickets. If you are getting on the line and you are behind the rock of hope, might as well go home and save yourself the trouble
Satish Haryadi
Nice small open air-theater. Went for a Shakespeare play. Even though it was raining, it continued. It was a wonderful experience. Loved the atmosphere.
Genai Cavender
The staff here is always friendly, and whether or not the show is superbly done, it’s always a great evening at the Public’s showing of Shakespeare in the Park! I look forward to it every summer, and it never disappoints.
Tim Gilligan
Providing the weather is neither oppressively scorching nor downpouring, The Delacorte is a great gift to the city. Many years have made the Public expert at shepherding the masses in and out of this ampitheater. Accessible is the key here, and the productions provide a wonderful primer and exposure to some great performers. This is a summer must!
Yovelsi Aguais
Super cool teather, the shows are super fun and a great plan for the summer, the seats aren't so comfortable though
Barry Jay Snyder
It’s so wonderful. Shakespeare in the Park at The Delacorte Theatre is a NYC landmark. One of the best things our great city has to offer!
Sally Lugo
I love this place because you get to see live great performance and great actors that makes the show come to life. Everyone should come and see it and bring their families as well. It is really fun.
Colin Chauche
A true Jewel of NYC. If you come to see a show, check the weather for rain and bring a poncho. They will often continue a show when they're is light rain and it's totally open to the elements. NYC must do if you can get tickets.
Naomi Siegel
Wonderful outdoor venue. Shakespeare in the Park is one summer event we all look forward to and Much Ado was incredible!
Norbert Tai
"Shakespeare in the Park" is one of the most amazing theater experience in NYC. This open air theater is even more magical when you are watching the show under the bright moon.
Esther L.
1,800 good open-air seats!
BYOB & food (alcohol permitted!) in non-glass containers.
Great FREE productions (lotto/raffle online, or make a day of it wait in a physical line at the park).
Dean Lorenzo Tartaglia (DeanLorenzo888)
Absolutely, magnificent to the cultural overture of perspicacity of NYC.
As performed within the artificially produced, natural landscape of Central Park.
Below the majestically fairytaled Belvedere Castle. 💜
Most especially, a must see, for Shakespearean connoisseurs;
For what a stage, for all the World,
To have.
Marc Chester
What can be written that will do justice to what has always been a memorable experience. One of the great things about the Shakespeare in the Park experience is the cost - free!
Nick Graham
One of my fave places to visit, due to the Shakespeare in the Park series. There is also a hidden gem of a garden when you climb up the stairs behind the theater.
Dr Jesica Mac Leod
my favorite theater in manhattan, outdoors always bringing the best of the best. yes, you have to do a line for more than 2 hs, but you can grab a snack and a good book and enjoy the summer outdoors, or you can apply on line!
The Corcoran Group
The summertime home of the Public Theater and a glorious outdoor stage for all their Shakespeare in the Park productions. Tickets are free, if you’re lucky enough to get ‘em.
Susan K
So glad live theater is back! No bad seats. The perfect way to enjoy nyc in the summer!
scott osman
One of the best parts of New York is the Delacorte theater and Shakespeare in the park. This year is no exception
G Fortuné
I always love going to the Delacorte theater to see Shakespeare in the Park! It's a great legacy to Joseph Papp, The Public Theater and free theater for New Yorkers!
Walter Ho
Great night for a play. Production was fun
Savazhe
Gorgeous outdoor amphitheater space with the feel and production capabilities of an indoor theater. I will definitely see another show there!
Stefano Cataldi
Went there for the free Shakespeare play. The entire experience was awesome. Friendly staff. Beautiful location..and the play. Man...so good.
P Lucas
Warning to women attending crowded events: the women's restroom always has a long long line, (although it moves fairly quickly), the toilet paper always runs out, and there are often no paper towels. Come prepared.
Caroline Yang
The theater was beautiful at night and seating was comfortable. Even the seats furthest away from the stage had a good view of the play.
David Brawley
Always a wonderful time catching Shakespeare in the Park!
Rahul Sood
Very well maintained, large amphitheatre with comfortable seats and friendly staff. Would have helped if the restrooms were within the theatre but that's nitpicking.
Patrick Christensen
Saw Othello. Fantastic production. Sound was good and staff was friendly. Cobb salad wrap was on point too. Fresh and tasty.
James E Kelly
Free Shakespeare In The Park at the Delecourt Theater. Outdoor theater is a great experience to see live performances, and it's always FREE.
Sandra Ordonez
For me, the summer is not complete until I wait five hours online to get my hands on tickets to see Shakespeare in the Park. I've seen three shows in total and every time, it feels like the first time.
Kat Toledo (Stace)
Ok so you have to be there at 6am to catch the tickets and if you're lucky, then, awesome, you'll get to see the plays at the venue and have a great time.
Donald Christensen
Great when free, but a mixed bag. Is it worth waiting in line all day? Usually not. Go at the last minute and take your chances, particularly during previews.
Benjamin Pitzer
Saw Shakespeare in the park for the second time and it was amazing. The atmosphere in the theatre on a warm summer night is just unbeatable!
Paul Rigano
Gorgeous outdoor theatre. Never been disappointed here, the summer Shakespeare in the Park series is always amazing!
Richard Kaufman
Here's to old Will Shakespeare, he wrote some dandy plays, in his spare time he kissed the girls and wrote some rondelays. The only downside is to wait in line at 6 am for free tickets a few hours later.
Manuel Gonzalez
A truly wonderful New York tradition. Though the line waiting has gotten out if hand. Has a great food stand by Danny Myers outside in the season.
Mathew Leland
Arguably the best stage in all of NYC. It's a pretty surreal experience to watch a play here under the stars. Completely different from any Broadway experience.
Patrick O'Connor
The Delacorte is outdoors so plan and dress accordingly. Food stalls and staff were helpful. Seats were a tight fit.
Ariel Diaz
First time going, watched the merry wives of windsor, and had a blast with everything. It was a blessing.

The show, Much Ado About Nothing, was outstanding! The acting, dancing and modern interpretation really enhanced the comedic nature of the play.
Rick Spilman
Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte is one of the great pleasures of New York. The Public Theater does a consistently great job and the setting in Central Park is a delight.
Eli G
Just keep in mind that if you go to a night show (I don't know if there's day shows, but just in case) you should probably take a blanket because it could be really cold, my sister and I had to go in the 2nd part of Othello because the cold was freaking unbelievable!!!!!
Andrea Gasto
Cant' beat free! LOL... Really though it was a great experience, we saw Othello a few years back for "Shakespeare in the Park"...
