Reviews of Academy of Music
Linda Hrushanyk
I had the pleasure of seeing the musical, "Pretty Woman" here last night. The Academy of Music is such an ornate, beautiful place to see any play, musical, etc. We had no issue in showing our vaccination cards and wearing our masks. The ushers, were so nice, Clifford was super nice, so a thank you to him for directing us to our seats. We sat in the amphitheater and we were able to see and hear everything. The musical, Pretty Woman, was more than "awesome" and it's still playing for another week. I can't say enough about the musical itself. The production, the actors, the set, the costumes, the dialogue not to mention the incredible singing, the opera, the dancing...it was just really great! Such a memorable night at the Academy!

Really wonderful place, the seating is quick and the staff were wonderful. If you get one of the seats closer to the top balconies, be aware you will need to go up a lot of stairs. Getting to your seat may be tricky, and going down another set of steeper steps may be challenging but there is a rail you can hold onto. Overall an amazing place to see the performing arts!
Denise Childrey
Beautiful decor inside. The Acoustic are just unbelievable. Seating isn't too bad for a medium build person, however there will be shoulder touching. It's a little drafty but nothing a little wrap can't handle. I saw the Tina Turner musical. Great show!
Seazonz 219
Absolutely gorgeous theater. Have some fun: dress up when you go! We saw The Nutcracker but I'm sure any play, musical, ballet, etc., would be just as wonderful. Comfortable seats, pleasant staff.

Saw The Tina Turner Musical Nov 23, 2022 and it was excellent. I can definitely recommend seeing this musical before it leaves. But although the Academy of Music is a grand looking theater, it’s just ok imo. Seats are tight and your comfort level depends greatly on where you sit. The Academy is also quite large so it’s definitely not a small, intimate theater where you have a good view from anywhere. My recommendation is if you attend a show here try to sit in the orchestra.

Saw Hamilton here. The play was GREAT!
The seating on the floor is kind of tight for tall people. Views seem to be great no matter where you sit. We were close so had Great view of everything. If you are 6' or taller, make sure you chose seats wisely.
Andrew Compton
Saw les miserables in Nov 2022. Had box seats. Pic attached of front row box 39. View, acoustics, stage effects were all top tier.
The cons are the seats are very VERY small. As someone with an average/slightly smaller build I had trouble with leg room and being on top of the stranger next to me. They really pack you in. Also if you aren't careful they sell seats that have obstructed views. Literally behind a pillar. So make sure to avoid them. If you purchase from a ticket master type sight they don't specify which seats are obstructed.
Very close to some great restaurants as well. We had a great date night.

What a great pleasure to see for the first time a performance at Academy of Music this afternoon because Philly loves Les Misérables! This musical is set in early 19th-century France following many characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. Fantastically located in the center of the city on Broad & Locust Street, this building is the oldest opera house in the US full of beautiful detailed works and home of Opera Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet. The building has ceiling support pillars on all levels that may obstruct the view except the main-floor Parquet seating. So check before purchasing your tickets. Luckily, my partner and I had an amazing view of the performance from our balcony seats in row B at a weird angle. The seats were comfortable and the acoustics were great. We definitely would return for another performance and recommend it.
Kristi Pearce
Simply stunning. A gorgeous older theater. The detail work was really beautiful. The seats were super comfortable. Maria was so great helping us find our seats. Definitely an awesome place to see Hamilton. Only downside is that the F&B concessions aren't that great and the bathrooms are small so the lines are long at intermission. Bathroom size is typically for theaters...just letting you know so you don't wait until you are dying to go to the bathroom 😂.
theodore jackson
I was at amazement with this beautiful structure. The experience was a great pleasure to have been there. There's a bar on every floor for refreshments. Definitely recommend seeing a show there. Great and helpful staff.
John Lyden
The Academy of Music is a phenomenal place to see a show. The oldest opera house in the United States, it is still the home of Opera Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet.
I've attended several performances of various types here and they're always top notch. The facility is well kept and the bathrooms are easily available.
Student rush tickets are usually available for Opera and Ballet performances, in the Family Circle.
Adam Gray
This theater is awesome. Very old school theater. However, the uppermost level seats are horrible, any of them. So uncomfortable, so tight, so steep. Most views are OK, but the actual seats are horrible. If you go, gets seats any other level.
Curtis Kleier
A wonderful theatre with great history. there are a few seats with partial views. I would not take these seats as your experience will be less than stellar.
Jennifer Fox
Sat in the first row in the Family Circle - there is a railing that can obstruct your view. There isnt a lot of legroom so my legs needed to bend into the aisle (thankfully I had an aisle seat). My husband's knees were against the balcony wall. Please keep this in mind when booking your seats. It is a very beautiful theater. We saw The Nutcracker!
Julia Uchniat
The building is old but beautiful. We arrived early so getting in wasn't a problem. You have to show i.d. and vaccine record. Everything ran smoothly and the show Pretty Woman was fun.
Sara Spaid-Thomas
This place is so beautiful! The play we saw was awesome and the actors were very talented. Their singing was amazing and Hadestown is definitely worth seeing. Sidebar: Be prepared to sit in some uncomfortable seats especially if you have back problems.
Alexander H. Spano
It's a beautiful theater with an amazing atmosphere... a great place to see a show.
James Glazier
Probably the most beautiful theater in the USA and certainly the best place to hear bel Canto opera. Always a delight.
CHANTY
It was awesome got into the show early was guided to my seat had a good view. Seen a Tina the musical. 5 stars very good performances by all the actors. A must see
Jasmaine P
Went to see Hamilton. We were so excited and the cast did not disappoint! Can't wait to go back to see another show. All of the theater staff were very nice.
Some Body
The building is clean and welcoming, the staff and are super friendly, the seating was individual velvet chairs which are so comfortable. The space was warm and comfortable where as I am usually freezing in theaters. And Cinderella was such a great show! Don’t know much about ballets to compare but I really enjoyed it non the less. They do serve alcohol and non-alcoholic beverage and chips and candy. I walked to can’t speak for parking.
Roxanne Andrews
Where do I begin? From the magnificent order to enter this incredibly exquisite architectural wonder, to the indoor decor, - this venue is regalia. The red jacketed escorts are helpful in every aspect.
R Mackey
I went to the Shen Yun show and it was amazing! It's like the dancers were floating! The co-ordination of background video and stage show was perfection. There is a full orchestra with classic instruments and classic Chinese instruments. The colors of the dancer's costume were so vibrant and bright. If you have never been...you must go at least once! And every year that the show comes to Philly it is different!
Jason Evans
This was an excellent show at the academy. We had a great time the show was amazing, and the staff was excellent and friendly. It is always a pleasure to come to the Academy of music. I look forward to coming back to see another show very soon.
Bolo 'Ye
It was was my first time here and absolutely loved it. My seatings weren’t the best but I still had a great time. Make sure you have vaccine card on you.
They sell drinks but you can’t take alcohol inside. I highly recommended going there very early to locate your seat and especially if you’re driving into the city. Finding parking spot can be hectic.
AVOID!!! *Amphitheatre H Row: D*. It Doesn’t have a good view as you can see on the photos below👇👇.
Justin Marinucci
The family went to see The Nutcracker, it was an incredible show. The building was like going back in time. A must see.
Kristin Jones
Beautiful theater, friendly and helpful staff. I came here to see Hamilton and could easily see the stage from our balcony seats. I was a little snug in my seat, but that's because of this wagon I'm draggin'. I think the seats were otherwise comfortable and had enough legroom.
Markisha Williams
I saw Alexander Hamilton and my seat was great. They checked everyone's vaccination cards and it was a quick and smooth process. I loved the show and will see other plays there soon.
Rachel ZZ
Why do you do lottery and call it “Lucky Seat “when you give the absolute worst seat possible while there are plenty of seats available , Just save it Kimmel center! I’m feeling very lucky that I can still hear!
deb gibbons
Tina at the Academy of Music was a GREAT show! The acting , music & dancing was phenomenal! Kudos to the cast. I would definitely see it again !
Jessica “티타” Muñoz
Friendly staff, beautiful buidling. First time here, for The Nutcracker. It was a wonderful experience.
Cam Bull Run
Great venue with excellent staff. Can't say enough kind things about the people who work there. And the venue is visually pleasing even before the show starts.
Arnaldo Puente
The Academy of Music staff members were amazingly friendly and extremely helpful. The Nut Cracker ballet has been our family Christmas tradition for the last 25 years. It is the highlight of our holiday season. The perfect father and daughter date. A magnificent ballet followed by an extravagant 5 star dinner. The Academy of Music always sets the tone for a memorable evening. Thank you for your professionalism.
Jessica
Beautiful theatre! Great productions. Hate the bars on the upper level seating, I’m not very tall so the bars kind of block the stage, at lower levels it’s no issue. The seats are also oddly placed around the pillars, but the pricing adjusts for that!
Other than that I have no complaints.
L Pierce
Went to see the play To Kill a Mockingbird.
The acting was exceptional. This is one of my favorite books and the actors definitely brought the book to life. The Academy is a beautiful facility. The restrooms were clean but kind of small and I'm on the smaller size of a medium built person. Another patron and I were laughing at the difficulty of maneuvering out of the stalls with others waiting close by.
Eduardo Rea
Saw Les Miserables here last night and was blown away. They did an amazing job , all the performers we're amazing, the venue was beautiful with great sound. Highly recommend coming here.
Only nitpick against the place is that the souvenir drink cups are the lamest most boring things ever.
Julie Hancock
Brought my daughter and her bestie for Philadelphia ballet’s Cinderella. The ushers were very friendly and helpful. Excellent acoustics in the building making the orchestra sound phenomenal. And of course, the beautiful architecture makes for a magical experience all around.
Kirsten Finsterbusch
Wonderful place to see anything involving the arts in Philadelphia! The Nutcracker ballet was phenomenal, the staff was incredibly helpful and it was super accessible to all.
Austin Hull
Looked beautiful inside and set design on the show we watched, plus the show itself (Othello) was amazing! Drinks are pricy but at least are conveniently close by to the seating areas so you don't need to go far between intermissions for refreshments.
Matthan Griggs
We have been there recently for a few shows (Tina, Cinderella). Staff is attentive and kind.
Seats are comfortable but take note: it is always cold in there. So dress appropriately.
Stacey Ramos
Beautiful theater. Very orderly and they continue to maintain their infection control standards. However, the customers are not required to wear masks. The orchestra was phenomenal!
N Royal
Beautiful theater!! I love seeing shows at the Academy of Music!! For this trip, I attended Rossini's Otello by Opera Philadelphia. Wonderful performance!! Ushers were great, facilities are clean, and the theater is just breathtaking!!
Dorothy Jordan
Went to see a play. Haven't been in this place for years. Brought back warm memories going to Plays with my God-mom & Sister/ Friend.. Beautiful atmosphere. Love The Academy of Music. Cozy
Michelle Singleton
Jagged Little Pill the Musical was amazing. Balcony was still great seats for the show.
Diana Sipluk
Great experience at the nutcracker! The seats are a little tight especially when it's a packed house.
Chad
Very cool theatre. Saw Jagged Little Pill which was amazing.
Seats have a lil more leg room than most theatres in NYC which is good especially for tall humans
RobiKo & Associates, LLC
I sat way up high in the amphitheater, and I did not enjoy my seat.
After intermission, I snuck down to the first floor and stood by the door.
The staff were polite and accommodating.
Don't buy the cheap tickets ever!
B Davis
OMG what an amazing theatre!! The architecture alone is beautiful!! Every seat in the house is great, you can see the stage & great everything clear!!
Thx to a dear friend I got to see Les Miserables on Sunday for the 2nd time with my daughter...the first time was 27yrs ago when she was 5yo!!! If you've never seen it go, it's so worth it, phenomenal show!!!
Melissa Rossner
Not only did we see an amazing show with excellent performers, music and writers; the staff at the Academy of Music could not have been more accommodating. They went above and beyond to make an uncomfortable situation comfortable and we felt very fortunate to have been given the utmost care and customer service! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts 💕
sherry Briggs
Beautiful Theatre in the ❤️ of philly.
Will definitely visit again!
Stacy carribean sea
A little hard to find because the front of the building is under construction but beautiful inside. For some reason they didn't let us in the building on time and then wouldn't let us in the auditorium either. I think the performance started late also.
Angie Winkfield
one of my hometown favorite places! Comfortable seating! Good views no matter where you sit! Enjoyed many performances there! Highly recommend!
Nancy Armstrong
It is always a great experience for me. Les Miserable was just another amazing show. The cast is outstanding.
Looking forward to Tina in 2 weeks!
jim weitzel
Awesome, I saw jagged little pill on Sat night, and that show was one of the best performances I've 1ever seen. The Academy is such a great place to watch a show you can feel the history.
Tati K.
Saw the Nutcracker here. What an amazing performance! Staff was friendly and helpful during intermission. Definitely see a show here if you have the chance!
Meryl Lafazan
Wonderful acoustics. Difficult seating & stairs for people using walkers. Staff was very helpful within the limitations of the orchestra steps.
Helen Hicks
Staff was excellent! Show, Les Mis, was AMAZING!!!!
Only drawback was sitting to the side of the stage. Due to the shape of the theater it took some maneuvering to see the whole stage.
Chris Oatway
An absolutely beautiful venue. Sound wasn't great with the orchestra in the pit but you cannot beat the history and beauty of the building. Saw Nutcracker.
Jennifer Krantz
It was my first ballet experience, and it was fantastic! While getting cheaper seats off to the side, the view was only slightly affected (left most corner of the stage was out of view). The staff was friendly and helpful, even took a photo of my husband and I. Seats were easy to find, and the balcony seating was fantastically "stadium" styled in that there were no issues with heads in front of me. While still snug width wise, there was more leg room than some older theaters in Philly. Overall a fantastic experience.
Jen Mc Loone
While the is tight and many seats offer obstructed views, it's still a great place to see a show. It's a beautiful venue with fantastic acoustics!
Carolyn Bates
The ushers are fabulous, the venue is stunning, the acoustics are great and then there are the seats. If you have been there you know what I mean. Loved the show.
Paul Goley
Beautiful venue. Classic look and feel. Acoustics are wonderful. The seating space is a bit limited.
Angelito Jusay
Historic and beautiful. The rigid bench chair was pretty uncomfortable though.
Donna Mavuro
Saw DirtyDancing the Musical. It was great and so much fun. The singing along and dancing after the show.
Will be back in Dec for Tina.
Michael Russ
Seats (knee) space is tight along the balcony. The building is a beautiful piece of architecture. It is tough bypassing the homeless outside of the building.
Mike K
First time at this venue and we loved it.
Keliikoa Miller
First time watching a musical in person at the Academy of Music Philadelphia. We saw Le Miserables and I have to say it was an life changing experience I won't forget. I only ever saw places like this on the television in ads or movies but seeing this place for the first time is like traveling back to another era of life.

It's a beautiful, beautiful opera house - a little flaky here and there and the front is covered up with scaffolding but inside, it's stupendous. I've seen two touring broadway shows here - Hadestown and the Carole King musical. I saved some money by choosing the first "limited view/limited comfort" seat on the 3rd "family circle" level. For Hadestown, I was at centerstage to the left, and there was a pillar at my knee but otherwise, I could see everything on the stage just fine and had plenty of room. I've definitely been in theaters with much less leg room! For Beautiful, I tried out the right-hand side pillar and didn't like it as much for some reason. But the entire row was practically empty, so I moved over a seat after intermission.
The staff are friendly - I got a bit of a chat from one older man who gave me a run down of the history while I was wandering around after the show, and it's easy to get in and out of for a show. No real bottlenecks except at the stairs and if you take a bathroom break and look around even a little, you can avoid even that. There was a coat check on the family circle level during the more crowded show, but not for the other. I felt bad all the seats weren't full on a Friday night. I think some seats are sold but their ticket-holders didn't show up - that certainly seemed the case on my row both times.
Nicola Generette
Clean and comfortable. All seats are perfect no matter where you sit your able to see the stage.
Mary Jo Kempton
Beautiful theater. Great location on Broad St. Comfortable seats in the balcony. We sat in the first row.
Cherie Laster
Went to see the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve. Wonderful, beautiful ballet. The orchestra was awsome also.
Joe Baganski
Beautiful theater. Lots of history. Love the Broadway touring companies
Armando Christian
Finally went to see the Nutcracker and it was a great show
Matthew Cloues
Wonderful historic theater in Philly that has been well-maitained. It is both a beautiful space and functions well as a theater and is a regular home for ballet and opera. Truly beautiful interior. As an older theater, seats are a little tight and not that comfortable, but that would be my only complaint.
Erine Taguchi
This is a very gorgeous theater. This is located in board street, so very easy to access. In the entrance you have to show your ticket! Enough bathrooms so no problem. I watched Aladdin! Of course it is same as one in New York, but you can watch with very good price!!! I highly recommend to watch here!
N P
Beautiful old style theater building. Fantastic location in the center of the city. Most seats are good. Nice place to enjoy Opera and music.
A lot of restaurants around if you would like to have supper after show.
Marty Bockhorn
Just a good experience in many ways. The staff is professional all the time. If you ever attend to see a show ,you will enjoy yourself.
Doug Shapiro
Beautiful historic venue. Have been many times. Well known and advertised that some seats are partially obstructed. You might be looking around a pillar to see the stage. In general, go for lower level seating. The balcony has more of the obstructed although many are fine. The issue is those balcony seats can be quite vertical and close together. Depends on your individual preference. Floor seating I just got for Rain- Beatles Tribute were only like $5-$10 more compared to balcony and we were only about 10 rows back on one side.
Tara Phillips
The Nutcracker Ballet was amazing 😍🤩 …
Janiel Mikel
So many memories here of seeing plays as a young child. I love the old architecture and the theater choices they offer.
G G
We had great seats in the balcony. Be sure to cross reference seating chart to avoid seating in an obstructed view seat. Great atmosphere. You can dress business casual or trendy casual. We had fun watching The Nutcracker. They have very talented ballerinas!
Holly Swallow
Amazing to be back again and getting to enjoy the Nutcracker ballet! Felt super safe, everyone was masked and vaccinated. Ballet was beautiful and staff were helpful and kind.
Aimee Robidoux
Wonderful night out to this beautiful theater. The staff was friendly and all covid protocols were followed. The show was wonderful...such a talented cast!
Shawn Eleby
Although the facade seemed to be undergoing some sort of cosmetic construction, the interior was pristine. It's like stepping back in time to a place of wealth and extravagance through its elaborate Gothic or neo classical architecture interiors. The staff were fast and friendly, from will call to ushers showing you to your seat. There's not a bad seat in the auditorium. And although the online seating chart doesn't make it clear, the balcony seats aren't graduated like steps one further back than the other, they're like pocket booths stacked on each other like balconies of a high-rise apt. building. I was there for a comedy show and it was an awesome experience
TOM
Great venue. Very impressive. Careful on the balcony levels, there's some partially obstructed views there, but the staff was very accommodating.
Tonya Respes
What happened to the days when going to the academy o f music meant class an d getting dressed up?
Sin Weng
Wow this place is beautiful and wonderfully designed for maximum visibility. The inside of the theatre has comfortable seats and a very classic style. The staff were all profession and everything started exactly on time. This was my first time and I was definitely impressed by the visuals! I didnt realize that it is the oldest opera house in the US.
bridget rose goes
I have been there for both John Mulaney and Hamilton in the past month. Staff is always super helpful. The building itself is beautiful. The seats could be more comfortable but it is what it is. Food is expensive but that’s something you figure.
Chris Sprague
Amazing place! This venue is breathtakingly beautiful, our seats were great, and the ballet was excellent. I was pleasantly surprised to find out there was a bar inside, too! Prices were as high as you might expect for such a venue, but still.
brian bieber
Such a beautiful venue to see a show. You can almost feel the history of the building. A lot of stairs if you’re near the top but its worth it. And the sound is great too!
Donna Methratta
Annual holiday tradition to see the Nutcracker with the family! Great every time. Beautiful venue! We are glad to be back.
mary d
Despite the fact that I had an obstructed view seat, I could see fine (if I leaned in a bit!). This venue is a feast for the eyes and I have not yet been disappointed by their shows; a place to make Philly proud.
Maureen Mahoney
The musical the waitress was great really funny and very entertaining!! So much talent !!!
Lauren Bleich
I saw Hamilton and Hadestown. Both were wonderful! The theater has a nice setup and sound quality.
R Ashley
Went to see Hamilton. Wonderful production. Ushers were friendly and accommodating. If you have a fear of heights, I do not recommend the upper levels.
Malarie Perelshteyn
Saw "To Kill A Mockingbird" here and it was FANTASTIC! Was here about 10 years ago to see The Nutcracker and forgot how beautiful it is. We were in the balcony, and there are concessions up there. I don't think I'll go back to Broadway with their exorbitant prices; Philly is where I'll stay <3
Michael Norton
For over three decades this venue has been a personal favorite to hear and see great performances of music, dance, and many other performers of all types. It is an old building, so some limitations like obstructed views and tight seating can be a challenge, but there is something special about the Academy that makes it worthwhile to accept the inconveniences.
Joanne Neil Jackson
I hadn't been to the Academy in years and when I was there I was down stairs where it is roomy. The seats in the family circle were so small, you will hurt your legs and knees. You would have to turn sideways. The acoustics weren't good. I went to attend a Comdey show. I could barely hear the comedians. It needs a overhaul badly. But all in all of what I could hear the show was good.
Jay Cebz
Just don’t like the fact that you’re not allowed to bring any type of food inside. Other than that it’s a great place to be in!
James Moyer
The Academy of Music is a veritable gem of arts in Philadelphia. Dating from 1855 it was built in the German "round arch style" and the decor is exquisite. The acoustics are fabulous. It hosts many musical events and is home to the Pennsylvania Ballet.
Summer Gillen
Gorgeous theatre. If you are in seats in the amphitheater, be prepared for STAIRS. Lots and lots of narrow stairs. The seats are about wide enough for a toddler who is really picky. Otherwise you'll be uncomfortable. But, you'll be seeing incredible talent in a beautiful space.
Tyson Jackson
Great venue but higher seats can have some view obstruction.
Dave Milsted
Had a wonderful evening with my bride. Saw Jagged Little Pill. Easy to get to using PATCO
Matthew Williams
The venue is amazing. The seating allows you to enjoy the entertainment no matter what level you are on. There are, however, many columns which can obstruct your view. This is noted when purchasing the tickets though.
MIKE
Beautiful place to see a show friendly staff every seat in the house is a good spot to see the stage with no problem and if uyou have an obstruted veiw just tell the usher and they will accommodate you
Rhaya Ramos
It was my first time there and the staff were really helpful and the cast were outstanding. Everything was wonderful and I am looking forward to coming back soon.
TJ Poole
The Academy of Music has a lot of history and you feel it as soon as you walk in. This is one of my favorite places to see shows in the city because ot feels authentic while also providing high quality entertainment. I've seen concerts, musicals, and plays here and each time I walked away happy with my experience. There is a downside of course to it being an authentic theater experience, and that is that it can get a little claustrophobic, some of the pillars can obstruct views in the higher seats, and the stairs to the top floor are quite the hike. I do not recommend taking the stairs if you are not capable of strenuous activity or have seniors in your group. If you are a visitor or resident in the city, please make sure to go see a show here as it's worth the visit.
VicK Wright
Jagged Little Pill was excellant! The theater is beautiful! ♡
Brigid Tray
Amazing :) definitely haunted
Cheryl Rice-Moore
Saw TINA the Broadway Musical. EXCELLENT!!! High energy, great cast, Plan to catch it again.... Baltimore.
Karla A
Great place. Took my niece to see the Nutcracker & she loved it. She asked to come back and see another show.
Elizabeth Kingsbury
Not really a Ballet Enthusiast but enjoyed Sleeping Beauty! Beautiful old historic building! Definitely a highlight of Philadelphia.. Seating was semi comfortable considering age of building. Washrooms clean & accessible.
Lani Bostick
Gorgeous theater. Amphitheatre seating is quite steep. Not so great if you have mobility issues. There was one in our large group who had a tough time negotiating the unusual and steep stairs. Some seating had very poor views. Probably fine for an opera, very difficult if you want a good view of the stage. Def had a crick in my neck after 3 hours...
Cheryl Jaffe
Great show! Tina Turner was terrific! Staff are wonderful. Handicap seating is great!
James
I had very good seats In fact anywhere you sit there is good viewing
Zanae Cook
I went to see the Tina Turner musical and I had an amazing experience. The cast did a stupendous job, excellent.
Nadir Sharif
2017-2018 was the first year that I visited the Academy of Music. This is one of the venues for Broadway shows in Philadelphia. In my opinion, it is the best one. The seating area is larger than the other venues and the parquet box seating is my favorite. I'm not tall (5'7") and struggle to enjoy shows if I get seated behind someone tall. The theater itself is also very beautiful. Staff are always very helpful. The amenities are well-maintained. The theater is well-connected to public transportation from all parts of Philadelphia (and South Jersey) which means you can save precious time not driving or looking for parking.
Scott Buek
Went to see Les Mis and wonderfull as ever. AofM is the best and always meets expectations in handling crowds. Always a go to venue.
Rich Ruszkowski
The Academy is a mid 19th century building off Broad st in Philadelphia know for its classical appeal. You can see many great shows here as they tour in Philly. There are obsturctions to certain seats as it's an older theater with columns all around so be careful in seat selection but otherwise enjoy the show and take in the Academys beauty.
G “Jersey” A
"Beautiful" it was a great musical show production! Worth going into downtown Philadelphia to see! The Academy of Music is still a wonderful venue.
Vincent Genn
Convenient location. Many good seats. Nice place to see a show.
Dale Kline
Cool place to see a show. Great seats are almost every where. Prices are not bad for seats but you get beaten if you try to buy a snack or beverage.
Saw a kids show and I would recommend it as a place to take kids.
Melissa Buono
Beautiful old theatre. View is good from most anywhere. Have seen so many shows here, most recently, The Nutcracker. Wonderful, magical production, and the staff were amazing with enforcing masks. Felt extremely safe here. They also checked vaccination cards on way in. Even heard ushers telling people to put the mask over their nose. You rarely hear that! Loved it.
Mark Capriotti
Checking ID’s and vaccine cards. Very helpful ushers. No food or drinks in the theater but they sell food and drinks.
Sue Sleeman
What a beautiful building. Great place for a graduation ceremony! Was on an upper level- it was very steep
Joe xxxxxx
No matter how often I go to the academy of music, I can't get use to how cramped the seats are. Yiu can't even cross your legs, much less move them, without hitting the person in front of you...
Elexcia Stansbury
It was nice. The only thing was the seats were very small. I could not move them at all but the venue was nice!. No complaints.
Brandie Sutton
Gorgeous theater! Great space to sing in!
Linda CB
Beautiful theater! Have been several times. Very helpful staff and prices are excellent. Supportive of school groups and wonderful location to restaurants. Warning.. the obstructive view is truly obstructive. There are poles literally blocking the view. Those seats should be free. If you close one eye, you'll see the show. I made the mistake twice. Never again. They are not mean on social distancing; the chairs are close together.
Scott O'Donnell
Saw Hamilton here. This place will blow you away with its classic architecture, no matter how many times you’ve been here.
Greg Spoto
The class act of Philadelphia. Friendly staff. Still "classical" decore and architecture that never gets old.
Always woth the visit for any occasion.
Gwendolyn Cobb
Went to see the Tina Turner Musical!! Fabulous show and great seats!
Camila Anderson
Stunning, beautiful place. Staff is kind, organized, and pationated about the event I was there to watch.
ej rideout
Beautiful building great place.
The Nutcracker was fabulous.
Staff super friendly and helpful
grace Purvis
The beauty of the building alone makes any show here amazing! As others have said the seats are somewhat small but in my opinion you will quickly forget with how mesmerizing the shows are. We can not wait to go back!

Ornate and beautiful venue. Your eyes will be constantly busy and entertained by the craftsmanship of the venue as much as the show that you are attending! There honestly isn't a bad seat in the house. Beautiful.
Jane Fioravanti
Went to see The Nutcracker Suite. My first ballet 🩰❤️🎶. Loved it 😍. Also saw the musicals Hair and Fiddler on the Roof years back at that theater 🎭 …
Rosemary Brown
A great place to visit. It is beautiful and our seats were fantastic
A. Bailly
Attended a Paw Patrol Live event there with the kids. Space needs a nice spring cleaning and updated chairs. Staff was very courteous however!
Larry Good
I'm spoiled by the MET but having to constantly look up, above the stage to see the text detracts from watching.
Janet Pietrak
Great facility with many parking facilities. Show started on time and all employees were helpful and pleasant. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory kept the attention of all including the very young.
Monik Jones
Went to see the Mean Girls Play. It was good, started on time. Staff was very helpful. Cool atmosphere all kind of people. Enjoyed it!
Sandie Havlicek
I saw my 1st live performance....To Kill A Mockingbird and it was AMAZING! This theatre is so old and beautiful with so much character!
Jeremy Hasbrouck
If you are looking for a great date night this place should be on your list. We have always loved the Academy. Ez parking and plenty of things to do before and after. Every seat in the place are great. If you plan ahead make reservations for dinner before you go downtown philly can be crazy busy. We just were just there for the nutcracker great job to everyone.
Dyan Hegerich
Middle of first row to witness the amazing performance of Hamilton!
Phenomenal opening night of Les Miserable! Stupendous sets, brilliant show!
Joan Atkinson
Beautiful, historic building. Great experience seen Tina the Tina Turner Musical.
Rahn Monrea'L
the place is amazing I'd like to say there is not a bad seat in the house. We were on the balcony in box seats and as the play would go on at intermission time we saw people moving around and getting better seats not sure if that's permitted or not made me feel like I was back in the old Veterans Stadium for baseball game they do need more signs to direct people to the right places such as the elevator where the balcony is and different seating. Because otherwise you can get lost in the rush and just follow the crowd and go to the wrong seats and have to go back much like we did. The show was fantastic the lady was great the place was clean. The parking lot attended needed much attention she stood there face in the wall like she was some type of mummy or something until someone finally approached her and asked if she work there. overall for Center City was not a bad experience of course you had your panhandler's out front. What you could not avoid but they were not all that pushy another thing that Center City should improve on is after the show is somewhere to eat and drink very few places were open
MarKeith P.
There's a reason they charge crazy fees online. The wait to purchase tickets is nuts! How long does it take to purchase tickets?!? I waited because this is a deal that couldn't be beat!
Cathy Moskal
A beautiful theater! I was so happy to return for the first live show since the shut down. My family and I saw Hadestown. Fantastic casting, music, performance. We had mid level balcony seats and still had a good view with great acoustics!
Jotigger Ledene
I saw Shen Yun there. There is no bad seat in this theater . The show was beautiful and the orchestra was heard extremely good in there. The height of the ceiling keeps the music all around you . Great place to see shows. The only negative to this place is the intermission needs to be lengthened . Last year I saw the Shen Yun show and I was in the upper level with my Mother . I had to use the rest room. So I went up and out to get to it . Well so did every one else . So by time I got in and out they closed the doors to the theater and you have to wait to get back in . So I missed some of the show . So this year I was in the lower level . Ran and got back in time . I also had a spritual moment . One of the ushers not only looked like a freind if mine , sounded , walked , laughed and hugged just like my friend . I told him I almost cried because my friend had passed , and here he is in front of me. I asked if that botherd him . His reply no not at all . He was sweet too like my friend .
Jeramie
My wife and I went down to Philly to see The Nutcracker the overwhelming detail in the statues and paintings that decorate around the stage and ceiling we're definitely a thing of beauty great place to see a performance and you can book a hotel right across the street
Sherri W
This theater has been around for a very long time but it still looks fantastic. What I like most about this theater are the comfortable seats and leg room. I’m 5’3” and curvy which lends to my height/length of my legs so you would think those theater with cramp seating would be okay (like The Met Philadelphia or Merriam Theater but they are the worst.
I was very comfortable at the Academy of Music. It also helped that the matinee show I attended was not a sold out show so I have arm room and was able to stretch out even further.
Due to COVID protocols, they did not allow food or drinks to be be taken inside of the theater. They want you to keep your masks on at all time throughout the show.
So if you have plans to go see a show which I highly recommend you do; wear your masks and be prepared to show your vax card and ID. Enjoy!
Ed T.
Beautiful space in which to see an event, comfortable seats and enjoyable diversions available during intermission.
Tom Purcell
Beautiful, vintage theater. Acoustics good, some seats on top 2 floors, ( balcony seats ) have obstructed views because of support columns. Seats dated, cramped leg room for tall people.
Touring cast of " Hamilton" was very, very good. Proof of vac & mask wearing mandatory. Nov 2021.
Harold Tucker
I was invited to see the performance of Hamilton with a friend, and enjoyed each and every moment of that spectacular show! It was all I expected and more. The cast was brilliant, the lightning was fantastic and the seating in the balcony where we set had a very good view of the stage. I was very impressed, and glad that the Academy of Music was able to open after the Covid-19 and produce a fine show that was not only entertaining, but also a cultural experience beyond words. Thank you.
Paul Brown
I appreciate that the seats are just uncomfortable enough so that I don't nod off. I scored a neat sippy cup by ordering a drink at one of the many mini bars.
Jameca Daniels
Very Nice place to view a show staff provided excellent customer service
Michael Harris
Beautiful venue. I’ve been here a few times over the years. Just saw Hamilton. The theater is well maintained. The sound was good. We were on the first balcony, a few rows back and had a good view.
Lornel Tompkins
The theater is beautiful. There are COVID restrictions in place. You need proof of vaccination, ID, and need to wear a mask. The auditorium holds 2509. It was almost full for Hamilton. If you require ADA type assistance There is personnel to direct you to another entrance and assist you in any way you need. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The sound system is quite good. Highly recommend.
Syreeta Anderson
If you are fat, treat yourself to better seats. I sat in the family circle, thank God I had an end seat but it was still super uncomfortable. The seats are comparable to flying coach on Spirit. The show was great the sound was crisp clear and I'm glad I purchased myself a ticket on a whim.
April Casey
Went to see Hamilton and had a wonderful experience except that we happened to be in a row that had a large railing across our view of the stage (top balcony, row B). The 3 balconies below us did not appear to have this problem. For $200 a ticket I would have preferred not to have to hold my head sideways all night to see what was going on but I guess it's better than sitting behind a column.
Barbara Sarangoulis
I saw the Broadway touring company of Hamilton. The balcony seating was very good. I would caution that there are a few poles in the balcony that obstruct the view, so be careful when you seat select. The crew did a good job checking ID and COVID vaccine documents before entry. HAMILTON was amazing!
Joy St. Louis
Gorgeous center city theater that lends to more intimate performances. COVID precautions are observed with proof of vaccination required as well as masks. Despite the extra steps seating is quick with lots of red jacketed ushers to assist. Due to the building's age the conveniences are located on the lower levels: restrooms, coat check, will call, refreshments and performance merchandise.
Relatively wide and comfortable seating. The lower floor is wheelchair accessible. The acoustics are amazing. There are parking specials at nearby garages. Located on the Avenue of the Arts makes finding good dining options easier.
Cary Neff
I always forget how majestic this venue is. So beautiful.
David Schimmel
Beautiful architecture. Great staff. Place wasn't built for normal-size males, however, as my knees were touching the balustrade (I was seated in the uppermost level). Despite this, had a good view of the stage. Went to see Hamilton. The sound quality in the first act was lacking; it was difficult to understand the actors. Fortunately, the problem was remedied for the second act.
Christine Spalding
What a great time. I had plenty of leg room as well
Rebecca Vogelsang
Easy to get to, lots of parking lot options, friendly staff, and clean.
Jennifer Keenan
So beautiful and staff were very accommodating. I am disabled and they made sure I got to my seat and escorted me everywhere I needed to be. I had a great night for the opening night of The Nutcracker. I even was able to meet the mouse king and get pictures. This was in my bucket list. All in all I was truly grateful for the whole entire night.
Katy Mae
Really great theater. The actors ability to sing and act in Waitress are amazing. They are so talented. I wish the instrumentals were at a lower volume then the singing so you could understand the singing better.
Kelly Raleigh
First of all, this venue is gorgeous. The theater seats are comfortable and the entire space is stunning. Entry was a bit disorganized as there seemed to be an issue with ticket scanning and packing cellphones into the security cases. One staff member was on it though with asking folks who slipped through the phone security to go back. Leaving was also a little chaotic but it was ultimately a wonderful experience.
David Price
SO, the GOOD! The theater is beautiful and the acoustics are incredible. We saw Hamilton and the entire production was crazy good!!!
NOW, the BAD! Pay more and avoid the Amphitheatre. It is absolutely the worst seating in any theater around the world! Non reclining, straight wooden backs that are right on top of the seats in front of you. Even for short people, your knees are wedged in and you can’t move. Your neighbor is also close, very close. If you are no longer a kid, pay more and sit lower. You will be glad you did.
Dale Andrews
Beautiful place to see a show. If you or your party has trouble with steps, I'm not sure which seats would be best. Getting down is okayyyyyyyy, getting up? The stairs seems to be way to steep. But that's just for the folks who have trouble. It's. BEAUTIFUL, HISTORIC building. Treasure your experiences there!
Gerri Csizmazia
Well organized. Great performances. I loved Les Miz.
Lisa Rock
The venue is beautiful and staff is lovely. I felt generally quite safe attending a show with their Covid precautions and vaccine card check.
However it was intensely hot inside, enough so to be a distraction, and there are no refreshments to be found once the show begins. I asked where I could purchase water and was directed to a public water fountain (which I'd rather avoid during the pandemic.)
If attending a show, bring a hand fan. You'll be glad you did!
Tom Curbishley
Beautiful building and theater, but the nosebleed seats we had (Amphitheater) were hot, cramped, and uncomfortable. Splurge a little and be comfortable.
MILLIE OQUENDO
Enjoyed the show and the snacks. Awesome venue.
Raquel Bosque
Beautiful and lovely environment.
Advice: take elevator if not on first floor, unless athletic or don't mind numerous steps.
Staff very helpful and friendly, prepare for an enjoyable evening, alcohol drinks available while waiting for show.
Bradley Schiro
This is a beautiful theatre, but there are a lot of seats that are very far from the stage and that are obstructed. They host many of the city's top shows, so I'm a regular patron.
Dan Obley
Saw the Nutcracker there. Excellent ornate atmosphere with excellent sound.
daniele parker
Beautiful venue. Love balcony seats. A bit close but comfortable.
Lynn Green
One of the most beautiful theatres I've ever seen.
Alan Johnson
The academy of music was great saw the Tina Turner show or play music was great whole experience was great
Cindy Weiner
"Beautiful, The Carole King Musical" is a wondrous walk down memory lane. The play follows King's creative career from age 16. The show is lively and features many of the hit songs she created. The Academy of Music is the perfect backdrop to honor the life and career of one of America's finest songwriters.
Monica H
Seats were comfortable, but I didn't like that they put regular chairs in to fit more people. My view was partially blocked the whole show.
Ron March
Saw Aladdin and loved it! Was great taking the girls for a show in an awesome venue.
Anita C
Wonderful theater. Great play, excellent actors. Saw To Kill a Mockingbird.
Vince Jacono
Academy of Music is a fun venue. They did follow COVID-19 protocols, which was nice. We had fantastic seats. Although you do have to be careful as some sections have pillars and you can sit in a way where your view is partially blocked.
Debbie Richardson
Saw the Tina Turner musical- great show- beautiful venue.
Marian Gentile
I saw the Nutcracker here twice. It's a nice building, although old. The seats are a little small and too close together and there are a lot of stairs. However, there are bathrooms and snacks/drinks available at every level so you don't have to walk far if you want something. They also have working water fountains if you don't want to spend $4 for a bottle of water.
The staff takes mask wearing very seriously, so you don't have to worry about anyone coughing or sneezing on you. However, I do think that people need to arrive on time and they need a more efficient way to do vaccine card checks on the way in. The Nutcracker was supposed to start at 7 but it was nearly 7:30 before it started, as people were still filtering in on their own time. That's nothing against the building, but if you decide to come here, please be early so you can get in and find your seat without holding up the show.
Naymish P
Amazing once in a lifetime experience at an historical venue/building to watchi Taichovsky Nutcracker.
Maggie Nguyen
Great venue, easy to see from most seats. Just too many stairs if you're up top. Too long of a line to get in even if you're 30 min early. Not a lot of places to park. Could have used some recommendations on garages.
Carl Cravens
Beautiful building. Sound was great, stage was easy to see from parquet section. Line for vax check wasn't bad and moved quickly, though we showed up almost an hour early. Wasn't really obvious where to find our section, but staff was very polite and helpful.
Jeff Bailey
View was great (center seats family circle), sound was good, seats are *really* tight. I was shoulder to shoulder with the guy next to me, and every time the person in front of me shifted, their seat banged my shins. Play was great though.
Allen Frisch
Nice, comfortable, and moderately intimate venue. We had a fantastic time at the John Cusack show!
Andrew Rhoads
Awesome venue, great sound and good view. Staff is helpful and super friendly, avoid obstructed seats as they are truly obstructed and really shouldn't be an option
Erica Aponte
Went to see "On your feet" and it was a great show. Definitely left you wanting to dance and tap your feet.
Jason Grives
Saw two shows here and they were amazing!
Patricia Dealy
Saw The Nutcracker. Wonderful show in a beautiful theater
Kyle Goodman
Saw John Mulaney here and the show was incredible, but I'm not here to review that. Let's review the theater! The location is perfect, a few blocks south of City Hall on Broad Street. The area is alive on Friday nights. If you're travelling by car, the traffic in the area was crowded.
After getting into the theater, we headed for the bathrooms and to grab a drink. There were signs saying "No food or beverage" in the theater, and I was surprised that you couldn't bring drinks in. Other theaters provide you with the sippy cup attachment to avoid harmful spills.
When we got to the balcony to find our seats, an attendant asked to see our tickets and directed us five doors down. When we got five doors down we asked the attendant there and he pointed us three doors from the direction we came from. We got to that attendant and she lead us into the theater to find our seats. The light she had to check rows, was not powerful and hard to see row numbers and seat numbers. We eventually did get seated and enjoyed an amazing show.
There are some small improvements that could make a big difference: allow drinks in the theater by providing sippy cups, add small indicator lights and better section labeling to ease the seat finding process and strain the attendants less.
Sheila Anne Magee
Beautiful building with great acoustics. Only a few bad seats, but when you are over 100 years old it is the history and ambience that give it charm.
Maryann Carland
Best acoustics for orchestra. Beautiful bldg. See ballet, plays and opera. Wonderful place with great people Highly recommend.
Steve S
Fantastic venue with superb acoustics and comfortable seats.
max durkin
I work there so I'm biased. Great theater though.
Kristina Flathers
Beautiful, cozy theater, and an amazing show! We felt safe with their covid policies both in place and enforced throughout the building. Parking underneath the Kimmel Center brings you right next door without hassle or concern about finding a spot.
Ramin Herati
Beautiful building, detailed artwork, decent acoustics despite sitting in the upper levels. A bit on the warm side.
Muhammed Zuhair
One of the best theater that you might like to see!
Patricia Lahey
The show, theater was beautiful, we enjoyed.
Only downsize problem was it was way to hot with that many people, no air was circulating and with a mask on was way too hot.
Other than that beautiful show!
Hainan Xu
I want to see Les Miserable. Good acoustics but I got tickets at the upper level and on the side. It’s impossible to see the stage without leaning forward the whole time. Afterwards my back really hurt.
Ashley Borgo
Came here to see a John Mulaney show, the building itself is gorgeous! 😲 We arrived almost an hour early and I was still amazed with the interior when the show started! Staff were all very nice and helpful with any questions. …
Stuart Swackhamer
We saw the Tina show, it was awesome as usual!!
Elijah Anderson
Saw Les Mis, incredible experience. Great space, good acoustics and set design, good visibility, and auditory experience even from right in front of the stage.
Recommended.
Richard S. Lewis Jr.
I was treated to an experience that mere words can not plainly explain. A literal rush of adrenaline, butterflies, & breathlessness is what I felt internally upon entering and exiting the Academy of Music for this is the place where I fell in love again... For the first time... With SHEN YUN!!!
Only the Creator of The Cosmos could have produced this piece of extravagance. 100% PERFECTION is the best way to sum up the entire performance. For the past 8 years, I have made every attempt to make it, and I have failed miserably in doing so. 2022 has proven that through sheer desire and perseverance that all goals can be accomplished and that is exactly how I felt as sat in my chair and visually ingested all that my eyes could see.
2023 can not get here fast enough for I will certainly revisit this palace of greatness and relive the wonders of Shen Yun!
Janine Johnson
Seeing Tina Turner the musical.
andrya pollitt
Always a phenomenal experience when seeing the Alvin Ailey artists. Only bother was breaks being a bit too long between pieces. Great venue and staff. Safety measures appreciated.
Elizabeth Fisher
Enjoyed the performance 🎭..but the steep steps are really scary …
Paul Dziomba
Saw Jagged Little Pill. You Live, You Learn!
Donna Mc
An excellent show (John Mulaney) in a magnificent theater!
It's amazing how well this nostalgic theater is maintained to preserve all of its original beauty!
What an incredible venue in so many ways!
Deatrice Kennedy
The show ending reminded me of being at a real. Concert
Susan Mccashew
Wonderful venue! Love Broadway series
Maria Davis
Saw Pretty Woman-the Musical. It was fantastic and the venue is beautiful.
Jason DiVirgilio
Beautiful theater with very helpful staff. We see The Nutcracker every year as a family and the music and performance is spectacular.
Zhiji Ren
Love this place. Very beautiful theater. We even got rush tickets two hours before the show. So convenient.
Jerry W
Nice place. Seats very narrow. Had seats in orchestra sec and had a average size man in front of me. I had to look around him the whole show. Not sure what that did to the people behind me.
Dianne Jowers
Excellent really enjoyed the Tina Turner show was excellent.
Lynn Tony
We had great seats! There is not a bad seat any where in the theater. Seats were very comfortable. Concessions on each floor. So your not waiting along time to get something to drink. I am getting season tickets for the PA Ballet. I am looking forward to another show.
drwood73
Great show.. watch out for the "obstructed" view seats
Chip Holland
Amazing theater. However - don’t sit in the 1st row of Family Circle seating (by the rail) unless you’re shorter than 5’8”. Legroom is tight.
Ellen Patterson
Saw Hamilton in the Amphitheater.
Enjoyed every minute.
vince jones
Saw To Kill za Mockingbird there recently. Beautiful building, staff very friendly, great experience!
Jennifer Ravelli
Beautiful venue. Amphitheatre seats are not the most comfy but you can see and hear everything! I am not throwing away my shot....
Andrew Mosley
Such an incredible place to see a show! It is so beautiful on the inside, and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Definitely going back to see another show.
Tyrone Ru
Great acoustics and ambience for an enjoyable Tina Turner play
Xolotl Xolotl
This timeless venue, with a very detailed design, using ornate sculpture and paintings, makes a beautiful theater to see a production. I would advise that the online pictures of the theater suggest that the venue is enormous; when in reality, the distance from the stage to the rear is not far at all. I chose a seat on the parquet floor thinking that the box seating towards the rear of the theater would be too far away. I found that any of the upper level seats around the horseshoe shape would be quite suitable for viewing and seemed spacious enough to really enjoy the performance. I am 6 feet tall and found that the seating in the Parquet floor section was quite tight with my knees touching the row in front of me. It was a little uncomfortable by the second act.
Some other good tips: I noticed that the theater offered free coat checks and booster seats for small children sitting in the Parquet section. I would also commend all of the ushers who were very helpful in assisting you in locating your seating section. This a great venue for a nice evening out in the Arts section of the city with an abundance of meal options close by. Enjoy!
Michael Rimmington
Beautiful building and wonderful theater. We had Box seats on left wing. A little more cramped than expected and no mention that view would be slightly restricted. "The Band Visits" was a delightful show with some wonderful voices and the on stage musicians were phenomenal!
Cathy Cuff-Coffman
Posted pics from our pre-show meal and our view from Balcony row C, seat 106 for Hamilton. We purchased a six-play Gold Membership for the re-opening of live entertainment. The view was excellent, and while the Gold members waited a while to enter, we are hopeful the kinks will be worked out for our next play.
Samantha Winterburn
Such a gorgeous venue to see a performance. The seats in the very top section are not built for tall people so it’s a little cramped. Getting into the venue was a long process with a huge and kind of unorganized line, but it is what it is.
petra deluca
It's really a beautiful space. I've been many times, and just saw The Book Of Mormon there last week. We were in the balcony - seats B 7 and 9 ( they are right next to each other, don't let the numbering fool you) and although we were sitting stage right, we had a very good view of the entire production.
The only reason I give the Academy 4 stars instead of 5 is that seats are pretty cramped, and the drinks cost way too much. But other than that, the lights, the sound and acoustics, the building itself - are all lovely.
Michael Young
Great venue! Highly recommend!
Greg
This is a beautiful theatre. I have been here a couple times and the staff is very polite. Limited alcohol and snacks are for sale throughout the venue. One small issue is that the rows can be a little tight, if you're particularly tall you may want an isle seat if you're looking for parquet seats, the balcony had a little more space where I sat.

The Academy of Music 💕
Who am I to say that this is just the most beautiful Opera House in the United States. I'll never forget
"Giselle" on my dear Sister's birthday..

A great place to see a show. I even had obstructed view seats last night. Be sure to make note that there is an elevator, if you don't feel like trekking up the stairs to your cheap seats. A beautiful building to see a show, staff are friendly and helpful. I've seen two shows there, and both experiences were wonderful. Be sure to take a look at my posted Photosphere picture of the place, so you can look all around and get a feel.

Went to see Hadestown. Show was excellent. Seats were a little uncomfortable as my husband and son are over 6 feet tall.
Donna Ruley
Loved our visit for a fantastic show
Nicole D
Cinderella is amazing !! I love every bit of it. Is a most see !!
Pamela Smith
Awesome experience seeing the Tina Turner musical.
Alina Fabozzi
Went to see Book of Mormon. Theater was clean, bathrooms were clean, and ushers are nice (most of them). The theater itself was beautiful, old style baroque with an illuminated ceiling and lots of gold accents. The sound was good, a bit too loud and muddled sometimes, but well-done. Overall, a positive experience, and I would see another show here.
denise kritzman
Such a beautiful theater! This is my second show at this theater (saw 'Wicked' last year and 'Come From Away) and both times I felt myself in awe of the beauty and history of the theater. Very comfortable seating, great views from most anywhere, and did I mention it was BEAUTIFUL!?! I'd go back anytime for a show! Parking garage very close on next corner--perfect!
Christina Rowbotham
Beautiful old building with great sound! ❤️
Jonathan Paulovkin
Beautiful venue. I was in the middle mezzanine on the far right, but is was still a great seat with no issues seeing the stage clearly. I doubt there is a bad seat in the house.
Keanon Gilliam (Slang369)
Went there for the Alvin Alley Dancers and it was a great performance. I haven't been to the Academy of Music in over 20yrs. It's still the great venue it's always been.
Scott Rhoades
We had a great time seeing Carmen here!
Dirty Money On The Trail #DirtyMoneyOTTsneakers
Great venue, *5, #BlackViolin put on a great show

I attended a ballet show. Love it !
Serge Kozhukhar, REALTOR
My family and I go here 3-5 times a year, great place if you enjoying ballet.
Laura Pyne
Large center, beautiful, but many obstructed seats... choose carefully. Getting to the parking garage is a challenge, had better luck parking near reading terminal market.
Melody Barger
Went to see John Mulaney here. Show what great, however I am a bigger person and the pull down seats were uncomfortable to sit in. We let Suan (sp?) know our difficulty and he reseated us very kindly and made it possible for us to enjoy the show. Great customer service!
Mia Cox
Went to see Hamilton today, it was beautiful! I would have given it 4 stars, you have to use only card for the snack bar. But I couldn't so here we are.
Arthur Matthews
One of my favorite venues in the whole city. The inside of the theater is beautiful, with a giant chandelier and elegantly decorated walls. The seats on the floor level are very compact, so get comfy with your neighbor, however it is manageable. I've sat in seats all over the theater and not once have I felt I had a "bad" view. As expected, if you're going to buy a drink or snacks make sure you're prepared to spend a ridiculous amount.
Larry Fried
I love the place. There's not one bad seat in the house. Can be a little crowded and you need to navigate through the crowd with patience but all in all a great place to see any kind of musical event. Everything from classical recitals to broadway shows and yes even Rock bands sometimes. The sound is always good and this is one of the best places anywhere to see a live event. Always a great night out here at the Academy
Melanie Green
Beautiful theater - I visited to see the touring production of Aladdin on opening night, and the company and theater handled the technical difficulties with grace and efficiency. My obstructed view seat wasn't even all that terrible. I did spend the entire show learning forward, but I had a good perspective of the entire stage, and I knew what I was getting when I purchased my heavily-discounted ticket. Overall, a very enjoyable evening.
Joanne Dreher
The Nutcracker was FABULOUS! Had a wonderful time.
Ellen Linsen
Shows are great. Acoustics are fine, but many seats are not set up to comfortably see the entire stage. I saw Les Mis from a seat in section C of the mezzanine. It was not priced for limited view but I couldn't see the front right part of the stage...at least 20% of the whole... at all due to the support post. It's a lovely old theater, but not ideal for plays.
Preston Phommathep
Got the obstructed view seat for Anastasia, Book of Mormon and many other musicals and was worth every little bit of my money. All of the ushers I had interacted with in the past were so nice and the overall quality of the viewing areas was excellent. If you don’t mind obstructed views, honestly would recommend just getting those seats as they are a great deal.
Denise Rambo
Great shows. Beautiful theater. THE WORST SEATS OF ANY THEATER I'VE EVER BEEN IN (Amphitheater). My back was KILLING me by intermission. My knees hurt for days.
Nick Shupinski
Truly one of Philadelphia's most beautiful venues. The architecture and attention to detail is an experience in itself for any event. If you have an issue with heights, however, be weary of the higher levels. It can be a bit daunting.
Nicole Rolo
Service quality is of the highest caliber at every point. Even the proof of vaccine line was highly efficient. Special recongition going out to the amazingy helpful box office personnel and as always the local stagehands who make it all happen.
Emily Manns
Gorgeous historic venue!
Be prepared to walk up several flights of stairs. Also, if you're afraid of heights DO NOT buy tickets for the highest level. Luckily we were there on a quieter night because we had to move our seats because it was so steep and overwhelming. It made me sick to my stomach to watch people let their kids just hang over the balcony. There is almost no guard rail.
Mel Blizzard
Had difficulty hearing. Later, only then found out the place provided hearing help.

Theater is historic yet beautiful with an amazing chandelier. Seats are VERY tight in the section I was seated in (I'm 4'10" and petite figure). There are seats behind columns that obstructs most stage views😖. For price paid, shouldn't be seated with obvious obstacles. Free coat check was nice, restrooms were clean, standard overpriced bar. Will be asking to change my seats since I'm now a season pass holder.
Daina Collins
Fantastic place to see a show, not really a bad seat in the house, even the balcony is worth it! Just a word of warning, it's a very old theater and the seats are small and there is no leg room. People were much smaller back then! If you are tall or have long legs, your legs will hurt!
Andrea
I saw the Nutcracker this afternoon and the performance (including the orchestra) was outstanding. Regarding the venue itself, the interior is very lovely. There were signs placed throughout so that finding your seat wouldn't be terribly difficult, if your seat is on one of the upper levels like mine was. I rated the Academy of Music 4 stars out of 5 only because of the bathroom. On the one hand, the lavatory and adjoining lounge were very clean. On the other hand, the stalls--at least on the family circle level--were very narrow. But that wasn't a deal-breaker for me: I enjoyed myself so much, I plan on seeing a different show there in the very near future!
May Chan
A great venue to see the newest Broadway show or opera or play. It's a beautiful old building. The only caveat is the seats are also old so they are much smaller for the current size American and the backs of the seats are very erect, making the seat extremely uncomfortable. The venue is large and you can almost always get seats on the day of the show. Be aware of how high the cheaper seats will go and how small your actors may be.

Went to see The Nutcracker, it was a miss for me but the experience was nice. Friendly staff that directed you, theater from what I saw was clean, seats were comfortable but not much leg room. So take advantage of any intermissions to stretch! Can't wait to see another show!
Sahar Siddiqi
Went here for Hasan Minhaj's show; pretty nice in general, but there's no clock anywhere, which is kind of weird when the show is running on a 'you can't have your phone or smartwatch out, seal it in this cloth pouch that only we can open with our doohickey' rule.
It'd just be nice to know what time it is while we're waiting for the show to start, you know? (I get that not all shows have a no-phone rule, but a clock would be nice for the shows that are)
Joseph Dougherty
I love the shows I get to see here! I know that people were generally smaller in 1904 when it was built, so my only complaint is that I am 6 ft. tall and have a large frame and I'm unable to fit in the seats comfortably. Other than that, I love the Academy!
Kimberly White
We saw another great show tonight at the Academy Of Music. We loved Hadestown and are really enjoying the '21 - '22 season.
Kurrene Rickards (STs)
We were in the Amphitheater. And still had good seats!
Waitress was an amazing show.
Regina
Nice venue and the staff was very friendly. I didn’t have any leg room- if I was any taller it would have been too uncomfortable. I will return but I will get seats in a different section.
Concetta Gibbs
Great parking available. Captivating architecture and beautiful lighting.
Robert Sandy Beach
Broadway tours are top notch productions..new orchestra seats are comfortable and have better leg room..ushers are very helpful. .lobby bars and concessions are a bit crowded..be best to have a larger bar on one side, concessions on the other..but I am nitpicking. .now if audience members learned to get in early that would be a plus..they usually have to hold a curtain 5 minutes which is rude to performers, and crew people...again always again good show.
Frank Pettorossi
Saw Tina the musical. Absolutely awesome!!
Walter Turner
Beautiful venue, wonderful staff.
Rebecca Zoltowski
The Academy's theatre is breathtaking. Very few seats have bad visibility, and the shows are always amazing. As a PA Ballet Friend I have seen all of the ballets for the last 2 seasons and they have all been phenomenal. The acoustics for the opera and musicals are also top notch. Just about anything you see at the Academy will be wonderful.
Chef Richard
Beautiful venue, a must-see.
Please go to see there..
The team working there were all fabulous
a shout out to Lawrence, he is awesome..

Donna Gensel
Really beautiful theater, well managed and staff was friendly. Have to say the seats are a tight fit though.
Joe Lanni
I've never seen a bad ballet or opera in this building. The ambience is everything. Built in the second half of the 19th century, the Victorian decor is very well maintained and is absolutely amazing to this day. The staff is courteous, and always helpful. It's on Broad street toward the south end of Center City so it's surrounded by quality dining options for before a show or cocktail options for after a show. A world class venue, no doubt. I hesitate to list the one thing that might be considered a con for some, but because of the buildings age it has columns that obstruct the view from some seats. While this can be a nuisance, the obstructed view seats come at a steep discount in areas the would otherwise be premium seating, and hardly detract from the incredible performances. I regularly purchase obstructed or partially obstructed view seats for nearly sold out shows I cant miss. We most recently saw Swan Lake and it was phenomenal. If you haven't been to The Academy of Music, you must go, I highly recommend it!
Adam Anders
We went to see Verdi's Requim this past weekend and the show was amazing. We had an issue with the seats in the Family Section which were VERY uncomfortable. No leg room whatsoever and the back was at a 90 degree straight up angle. Scrunched the entire time. With that being said, the reason I am giving 5 stars is two reasons:
1. The show was amazing
2. I called Opera Philadelphia to give feedback regarding the issue my wife and I had with the seats and they took care of me. No hesitation. The gentleman I talked to was able to help me and truly hear my concerns. Swift, smooth, and very customer friendly.
We will definitely return for another show.
Annie Nesbitt
This was our first time to the Academy of Music and certainly will not be our last! I was treated to The Nutcracker last night, and my husband and I were both mesmerized by the beauty of the theater! We have been to so many different venues in Philadelphia and could not believe it took us this long to experience the Academy. We had amazing seats in the 2nd level balcony, I believe it was section A, front row. They were perfect! And the ushers throughout the venue were very friendly and helpful! We are already looking to see what event we can come back for next!
R Pompa
wonderful production of Hadestown. staff was courteous, well organized checking vax/id. seats are tight typical for theaters
George Black
If you are visiting Philadelphia you must try to take in a show or concert at the Academy of Music. It is simply a breathtaking venue of old world charm, full of guilded trim, statuary, craftsmanship, and red velvet. Of course being so old, there are many seats with a partially obstructed view, so be careful when selecting your seats, if this will bother you. Also being so old, some of the seats in the upper balconies can be a rather tight fit for some of us bigger folks, so I tend to spend a little extra for an orchestra seat. I have been there for many events - concerts, musicals, and operas, but my favorite thing to see there is the ballet, and I always enjoy the stunning atmosphere in this glorious theater.
Michael Bradley
Managed to get Rush tickets to see Book of Mormon! These seats are orchestra right and there was a pillar in the way but still worth! Great show. Highly recommend seeing things here, sat in many seats and the views/acoustics are always pleasing/solid!
Tas Haque
I was here with my family to see a musical; it's a beautiful theater, with good acoustics and good views of the stage. (Though be careful about the upper tiers, it's a steep drop to the stage!) I'm looking forward to our next opportunity to see a show here!
moises mateus
Great place to see a show but if your 6 ft or taller the seating is very uncomfortable. Seen Hamilton I loved it awesome play/musical
Frank Bohenick 4th
Beautiful setting for amazing plays!
Laura Matika
Aside from the spectacular architecture and phenomenal performances, the customer service is above and beyond. As I pulled in front of the building dropping my daughter off to see a musical with a friend, my 11 year old said he had to use the bathroom. The security woman heard him through the car window, motion him to come up the steps and guided him through the crowd to the restroom. She delivered him back to my car a few minutes later while I was still parked out front. Never expected that... Outstanding!
Maddie R
Beautiful place!! I went to see Romeo and Juliet and was floored by the performance. Everything from the costumes, to the dancers, to the music was extraordinary. The academy of music itself is beautiful, just looking around before the show started kept me occupied
Patrick Van Tassel
Even with the post, still a good view. The accoustics are awesome.
Victoria’s Universe
Beautiful building. The bathrooms are clean and the theatre is large! Most of the ushers are nice and happy to guide you to your seat but from time to time you'll get a slightly rude one who looks as thought she/he hates the theatre. So far all of experiences here have gone well!
Fiz Gig
The Academy, what can I say? Beautiful old concert venue, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. Seats were comfortable, they have been redone since my last visit years ago. Great acoustics, of course. Saw "The Book of Mormon" there, a delightful outing all around. Snacks and drinks, including adult beverages, are available. Lines were long for that, and water was $4/bottle.
David Flynn
The wife and I came in to see a performance of Carmen. The performance itself was outstanding, the set and music were top notch. However the seats were just unforgivably uncomfortable. We were on the fourth floor and the steps down into the seats were sloped so steeply you felt like you were falling. The seats themselves were tiny, cramped, and hard. My knees were touching the headboard of the seat in front of me, there is very little leg room. The more expensive seats are likely more comfortable, but I'd expect a bit more from a nice venue.
Sheryl Goldberg
Beautiful old venue. If you can afford it, get a seat in a parquet box. Real chairs! Better than orchestra!
Kelly Washington
The venue is located on Broad Street and moments away from dining, shopping, and convenient parking. If you happen to get seats on the floor or the center of the first balcony, you'll be able to see everything. The theater is very tall and is shaped like a horseshoe, so anywhere above the first balcony or along the sides and you might have problems seeing the stage. The higher up you go, the more steep the stairs, and the closer and more uncomfortable the seats. So bear all that in mind as you pick your seats.
Also, the bathroom situation (like in most old places like this) leaves a lot to be desired. The ladies rooms, especially, are tiny, and (if memory serves) not on every level of the theater.
I've seen several shows here, and they are always the highest caliber.
Mick W.
Great Venue. But one person serving drinks??? What the heck. Literally 1 line for all the theater goers! By the time I stood in line to get a water I didn't have enough time to go to the bathroom! Why aren't there more people with drink stands or more people working behind the table? And the bathrooms are downstairs. Be forewarned if your handicapped. But a beautiful overall show and historic building.
Everest Dental Wolodymyr Zin, DDS
Great performance. We had great seats and great time! "Pretty woman" is worth seeing.
John Ramsaur
Interesting ornate old theater. Generally well maintained. Saw last night that pleated fore-curtain was caked with grime. Take care when selecting seats as some have reduced views.
M R
It's a BEAUTIFUL historic theater. I love how it makes you feel like you went back in time. However like others have said the stairs can be a bit much for people with mobility issues. I would like a little more leg room and width to the seats, but that's true for many older theaters.
Grace Earnest
Great place to see a concert. I saw Don Henley and also the Celtic Singers. Comfy seats and beautiful surroundings. It's an old venue but has history & charm - needs a few touch-ups here & there but hopefully it will be around for another 100 years!
Joe Dragon
Just saw "Come From Away" - entertaining, thoughtful and a look at a historical event on 9/11. Humorous, harmony and well done. Consider seeing the play. Too many empty seats was difficult to grasp. Seats are narrow.
John Sorensen
Nice Show excellent venue hard to park Mannheim Steamroller was great
Robin Buckley
Beautiful place. Use the elevator to get to the top though!!!
Jay Smith
Beautiful theatre with some great performances. The only negatives are that the seats are a bit tight and some seats have obstructed views. Other than that, a really nice intimate hall.
Karan Patel
Amazing venue. The whole place is beautiful and has a magical feeling. Saw the Nutcracker there. Immediately fell in love with it and ballet. The people there were amazingly friendly and helpful as well. I plan on going here much more often for other shows
Clayton Fioravanti
It's the Jewel of the Philadelphia performing arts community and a legendary venue. It's tight and close . As All the old theaters are.
Architecture and interior are historic.
Tessa j
As much as I love the plays, there are many obstacles here, don't plan too late or you potentially will pay premium pricing for limited viewing abilities, either columns blocking , poor view at the sides or if a taller person is sitting in front of you they can limit. If you have the ability try to obtain balcony front row center, I think these are the best of best sitting. You are sitting front and center, and see all.
Emory McMinn
Amphitheater seats are only suitable for people with short legs (<5'8", average proportions). Other than that, decent acoustics and a good view of the stage. Favorite Broadway show so far has been Kinky Boots.
blackie3740 Sansone
So much fun!
A truly inspiring adaptation!
Sean C
Classic theater built in the 1850s. Been here several times over the years. Best venue for opera and ballet.
Jose Medina-Perez
My first time going to a theatre besides a movie theater and i will to say this is an Awesome Experience!! The cast is great and the show is worth the watch
Sara Jordan
This is a gorgeous venue for a performance. The acoustics are ideal and the seats relatively comfortable. Unfortunately, the acoustics are so good that, when the relatively inattentive ushers fail to prevent the children dragging a bag of chips into a ballet and then ignore or stopping the children loudly rustling and crunching those chips, everyone can hear the chips, not the flutes.
Tiffany Montalvo
My family and I attended the Aladdin play. It was beautiful; however, it was ruined by the outdated seating/ venue. Choose your seats wisely! If you sit above the third level on either the left or right sides ( we were seated on the left side and couldn't see anything) I was so irked!
P. Tran
Seats are pretty uncomfortable. I'm a short person and there was barely enough leg room
Kevin Klein
Great setting for live theater where we watched To Kill a Mockingbird.
Joy Gunn
I understand not letting folks in to the building until a certain time, but once you enter you're made to stay outside of the auditorium, but for what purpose? Strange. Otherwise a great experience.
GeoToons
Went to see Beauty and the Beast. The place is a smaller theater but stunning nonetheless. The seats could be a but more comfortable and there were some with terrible views (mostly, if not exclusively, in the upper levels.) Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Great venue overall.
Lara Ruth Ziobro
Gorgeous venue. The acoustics here were amazing, as was the view in looking back from the orchestra to see the various balcony levels. The staff were very friendly and I found the facilities very accessible (bathrooms easy to access, and all that good stuff). I’d love to see the symphony here, but it was amazing as well for a rock concert.
Noreen McAneny
Awesome venue! Saw Come From Away last evening.. fantastic!
Na Spa
A beautiful historic theater venue. Dazzling inside. We saw Hamilton and it was outstanding! The theater itself is a must see!
Nancy Barbetto
Hamilton was great, however we weren't notified that proof of vaccination was required! If you're not from the area take a picture otherwise you're not allowed in!!
Salvatore P Pantano
What more to be said. This is a very nice theater to see a show. You feel close to the stage through out the venue.
John s. Burdey
Gorgeous architecture. A building with a lot of history. Great sound and viewing perspective. A walk back in time.
David Walker
Attended “The Phantom of the Opera” on November 11, 2017 at 2pm.
The Academy of Music has a very, very small and narrow portico “lobby” between the main lobby and the street. Here you will find the Will Call and purchase windows to the far left as you come in. On the date of the performance I attended you could also find that it was PACKED to the brim with patrons waiting for the main lobby to open, even up to 1:25pm. A good number of patrons were waiting outside on the sidewalk and on the front stairs. It was very cold, enough for a heavy coat, and I do not understand why the main lobby wasn’t opened earlier. Thank goodness it was a clear day and not raining. Of all the National Broadway Tours I have attended in other cities the main lobbies open an hour before, and the seating area thirty minutes before when it is “released” to the theater. But to have patrons standing outside this long is absurd.
The theater itself is gorgeous, stunning, impressive, and grand. Pictures hardly do it justice, and to be seated in a front row balcony box where you can admire the entire theater was a real treat. I was in Balcony Box 31 Seat 1 and the view was amazing, as was the ticket price. But I splurged because, having driven 5-1/2 hours one-way that morning just to see the show (I overnighted in the hotel across the street) I wanted to make this an experience I’d never forget. The chairs in that balcony box are probably the most uncomfortable I’ve ever sat in, and halfway through the first half of the show my rear-end was numb. But I survived nearly three hours of it.
Intermission provided some much needed relief, and a bathroom break, to which the restrooms seemed small for a venue this size, so there must have been others on the same floor as well.
Make sure to find a really good online seating chart that shows exactly which seats are obstructed by the poles and which aren’t. I didn’t have that problem being right at the rail, but in walking around the first balcony to take pictures from different areas you could tell the poles would be an issue.
All-in-all a breathtaking venue and a superb show. I’d definitely come here again, and get the same seat, or any seat along that part of the balcony, I’d just have to remember to bring a small (fashionable) seat cushion.
Jerome Espinosa Baladad
It's a beautiful place to find yourself in if you want to watch a cultural event taking place here in this part of Philadelphia. Acoustics were good, at least from where we were seated by the orchestra area. The whole place is not that huge but it really has very pretty details inside, with very beautiful main chandelier, all of which mesmerize and you can't help but notice.
michah7214
Beautiful theater and excellent show!
Natalie Bembry
Great show! Make sure you double check the seating so you are not positioned near one of the pillars.
Dave Volk
A visually stunning theater with ornate features and fantastic acoustics. Most of the seating in the amphitheater section is to tight for taller people. My suggestion is first and second row if shopping for tickets in that section.
Brian McGonigle
Great show and amazing venue!
Mary Jane Fletcher
Beautiful place, wonderful show.
Paul Vondiehmon (Vondiehmon)
The Academy of Music is an unbelievable place. We saw Love Never Dies and I loved it. We were in the seats on the second balcony and it was an awesome view. I took away one star for parking availability and the price of concessions. You are forced to park in a structure and they know it. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny to park.
tim farrell
Incredible venue. We saw Miss Saigon here. Looking forward to the next show.
Updated... saw To Kill A Mockingbird with Richard Thomas. Wow. Go see this show
PF Snacks
Beautiful theater with a wide range of wonderful performances in the heart of Center City Philadelphia.
Ashley Earle
I saw the Nutcracker here for the first time and I fell in love!!! The theater is absolutely gorgeous and the seats are comfortable.
Patty Ryan
Absolutely beatiful facility. Worth seeing on its own, regardless of the show. However, if you have even the slightest issues with walking or climbing steps, do not book seats above the main floor. The top level is equivalent to hiking up 5 or 6 flights, some of it rather dingy. Also aisles and steps up top are very narrow and Very Steep. Beware
Holli Allen Magill
They had it handled perfectly to keep the audience in constant movement to get inside.
I appreciated the Covid standards and process.
Show was great!
Ken Allen
it was a great experience for me and my wife it was my first time being there and we watch the show beautiful the. Carol King play the one who played. Carol King get a wonderful job and the other performances did the same thing
Madeline Avallone
It has very good vocals but the academy of music is made for just that. I saw Wicked here and from our seats you couldn't see the stage at all. At intermission we moved up, but I wouldn't recommend seeing a play here unless you're willing to spend a bunch on floor tickets.
Trix Middlekauff
It's a beautiful old theater and I love seeing the Pennsylvania Ballet there ... that said, there are obstructed view seats which you should avoid, and even the parquet level seats with a good view are a tight squeeze if you're over 5' tall. But that said, the ballet makes you forget about all that while it's happening!
Stephen A Bland
All COVID-19 protocols are in place. I just hate the seating...tight and uncomfortable. If there ever was a need for an upgrade...seating should sit high on the list
Matt Tuttle
Great shows and venue!
Duarte Geraldino
I went for the Christmas show and was really impressed at how beautiful the theater is. It's a good experience but what you really want to focus on is the actual show that you're going to see. Everyone at work there was very helpful and the seats were comfortable.
Dee M
The Nutcracker at the Academy is a family tradition. We have taken our girls to see the show every year since they were toddlers. They have also been to see Sweet Honey in the Rock, Swan Lake, Martin Short and so many other performers here. The beautiful, historic building has been updated and restored in recent years. Go and enjoy the acoustics and the beautiful chandelier, a gift from England, that glows beautifully and moves on cables during performances. The chandelier itself is historic. The thirteen foot wide, 5,000 pound masterpiece was removed just over a decade ago to be completely disassembled and cleaned after hanging in the music hall for 150 years. I love to watch the chandelier glow, rise and dim before the shows begin. Don't forget to take in the ceiling mural, sculptures and the medallion of Mozart.
There are hotels in walking distance for out of towners and transportation that will bring you almost to the front doors!
Wendell Lohr
This is an amazing place. I always enjoy coming here to see a show, play, or ballet. Took my daughter to see her first ballet, swan lake, and she loved it. She was amazed by the architecture, paintings, sculptures, and the chandelier. The P.A.M is truly a historic American icon.
jan achenbach
Old theater with very uncomfortable seats. Many have poles in front of them-careful when you buy "limited" view. Great sound. Very deep theater. Best to buy seats close to the stage.
Lm Morris
What a lovely old original theater. It is a great performance Hall with great acoustics and history. We saw "Black Violin Group " here in November which was awesome and about six or seven years ago we saw Manheim Steam Rollers here which h was another awsome show.
David Murata
What a wonderful historic building! It's a hike to get up the steep stairs to the amphitheater, but it is worth the climb. Chairs are solid and comfortable than they look.
Vincent Kozuba
The show was very good. Seating for my grandson was good, my seat had a large post in front of me. Get parking on line, many cars were turned away in front of me.
I showed my voucher for parking and was on my way to the Paw Patrol show. Make sure you print a second copy of your voucher, the lot personal tried to charge me to retrieve my car. Showed the voucher and was on my way. The show was advertised as being at the Kimmel Center it was a block down the street.
Stephanie Slapin
Great theater! Great shows!
Andy Gradel
Great place to see a show in Philly. Love the architecture and the whole place has a vibe you just won't get at newer venues. Only downside is long lines at the bars and bathrooms, which could use a little updating. But, will definitely be back for shows in the future.
Michele Hasson
Pretty Womem was great actors were awesome Best show ever...Went with all the girls in the family sisters daughter and niece ❤ great times
CRYSTAL W
Black violins show was so amazing it is definitely something that anyone of any age and any race should and can see.
I just really wish fees we're lower. A ticket that may cost $40 will wind up being $65 after the fees are added.
It makes it hard for families to go to different events
Richard Derrico
Just a wonderful venue. Classic. Good acoustics. Friendly helpful staff.
Toni
I had great seats I could see the stage very well
Mike Bell
This is obviously a good venue for the arts. Do think twice if your taller before buying the cheap seats on the top level or with obstructed views. The columns are super annoying and the seats are super tight.
David Lewis
Came here to see Hamilton, and had a phenomenal time. The COVID protocols were followed and we had excellent seats on the balcony level.
Ginger L
Saw a wonderful performance of The Nutcracker.
BETH C
Section D row Y seats 12 & 14. Ubstructured view on right side
E.j. Tinsman
Absolutely beautiful, as always. It's like a relaxing oasis in the middle of Philadelphia. I take my kids, grandkids and great-grandson down at Christmas to see the nutcracker. The orchestra' music sweeps you off to a dreamland of sugar plum fares and of course the dancing is superb! One of my favourite places to go to destress!
We got to the Wanamaker's building to see the light show and dickens village too. Reminiscent of my childhood some 60 years ago !
Marissa G
It does not get more historic then this! Recently updated velvet seats take you back in time, and there is always a show for you to check out
Latoya Prentice
Had a wonderful evening of the performance of Hamilton. The cast was EXCELLENT! The Academy is still beautiful!
M
The show was very nice.
Isabella Loparo
Saw the nutcracker here and it was amazing!
Ginadarlin Strange
Pretty good shape considering the age of the legendary, Academy of Music (162). I must warn you about the steep, small stairs (no hand rails) and the narrow rows. It wasn't very comfortable on the 2nd balcony twice. For one seasonal show, I was close to the floor, off to the right. The chairs there are more comfortable. I just remembered many moons ago. All I recall is a spectacular orchestra, local Catholic HS. I was so enthralled, I don't remember where I sat.
Joe Canamucio
Excellent venue to see a show. Great acoustics. And you can see from anywhere.
Shannon Citro
Wonderful old theater with lots of seating. We'll run entry and seat direction operation. There are some seats with obstructed views from the pillars, or even from the railing cross bars. The lights on the steps can also be distracting for aisle seats.
fat ass ruining my Foo Fighters concert
Was one of the most Amazing Shows I personally had ever seen! The actors were on point ! Whether they were singing or speaking, each and every Actor did not disappoint at ALL!!!! Again Totally Amazing!
Adele Whelan
Took my son to see Phantom of the Opera. Ushers were very courteous. We arrived too late to get a playbill. I asked usher about it. He said they were hard to get...but he went out of his way to get me one and brought it to me at my seat. The performance was stupendous. The staff polite.
Donna Snee
Excellent show and excellent acoustics!
Dana Evans
beautiful interior, the play "to kill a mocking bird" was phenomenal. Will be going back for future plays
Valerie Hill
Beautiful historic theater. They might consider opening the doors earlier during a polar vortex. Show was wonderful, seats and acoustics were great.
Mister Alpha
Needs renovation, but still has much character, and one of the best places to see the ballet, opera, or other theatrical event
Rebecca Chiffer
Excellent production but show was ruined by people in front of us talking, even shouting, throughout the entire performance. Not sure what's going on in Philly these days, but I've never witnessed such disrespectful theater behavior. Very disappointed that the Academy staff did not pay closer attention and remove the disruptive audience members.
Vincent Williamson
Beautiful place, easy access. Plenty of parking garages. Be sure to bring your proof of Covid vaccine cards. They will check!
Mike Leone
Classic performance Hall. Beautiful architecture. Great sound. The seats are very tight for modern audiences, as all venues created early in the last century are.
J Vance
Had the best time at the Aladdin show. My daughter can’t wait to go again.
