Reviews of Fort Preble
Rōbi Ventures (Rōbi Ventures)
This Fort is located on the campus of SMCC and parking is limited. If school is in session, there would likely not be any parking available as it’s all campus parking. We enjoyed walking around the area and seeing everything. There is also a lighthouse here at the site.
Luz Celeste Segarra Ramos
It was amazing to see. No parking around. There is a College near it. We couldn't park so we didn't stay for long. We where geocaching around the area. It has a nice walk way too.
Johnny Gomez
Beautiful light house built in the 1800s. Was part of an active fort from the War of 1812 through the Second World War.
Very easy to reach, but you’ll have to park in the community college to access the lighthouse. You can really take some great pictures of the lighthouse from the nearby beach area or along the rocky path leading to the lighthouse.
Megan Piper
Able to walk around and see the outside. Has access to the beach and some paths. Not able to go in also no cannons
c “cfl” lane
An interesting historic site that is worth a visit when exploring the nearby lighthouse. Decent parking and a nice place to sit and take in the views.
joe bourbeau
Very cool to see! And in such a beautiful area.
mei brown
We stop here after other places. So beautiful and peaceful with the harbor there
Ivy Marie
I'd never been there in the winter... the snow really set a different tone
Erik Teichmann
A great spot for ocean views, and a small amount of history. For someone who knows what they're looking for, I'm sure that the remains of the fort are very interesting. there isn't a lot in the way of signage or anything to tell you what you're looking at. However, the walk down to the lighthouse is great fun.
Chris Pine
A wonderful place to explore, especially with family and kids. You can walk out to the light house, look out the windows of the old fort, or travel down to the beach over the rocks. You can also go upstairs to get an even better view of the area. From here, you can see Peaks Island and other forts.
Bev Stevens
Plan to take your time to enjoy this area. I would like to see it kept cleaner and scrub grasses mowed to provide more space for flower gardens, however the wild flowers that grow in the unmaintained area are rather pretty. The light house can be viewed from several vantage points and there is quite the panorama of the boats on the water as well. The area looks neglected in places but that may be part of its charm. The parking is limited but if you are up to the walk you can park at Buglight or Willard beach parking lots and spend time wandering around.
daniel deutsch
Pretty cool place to walk around next to the Maine college campus. Light house attached to the grounds.
Rafael Sa
Very nice walk over the rocks to the fort. Be careful not to trip and fall between them. Not suitable for people with difficulty of locomotion or very small kids.
eric jones
Would of gave a 5 stars but the attendant kept harassing us about our dog. Dogs are allowed.
Ayon Ibrahim
Remnants of old fort now sorta part of SMCC campus. Cool to walk around, especially in foggy weather.
Diana Dowland
Spring Point Lighthouse is a hidden gem on the SMCC campus.
Monty Abel
Pretty cool. Got some nice photos from out on the stone pier. There are good sized gaps between stones walking out the pier with pretty deep crevices if you have small kids or elderly family members.
Angela Handy
One of my favorite places in Maine to just chill out with my family. The new wall is absolutely cool!! And the stairway to the water is cool!!!
Matt
Pretty especially during sunset. Bring refreshments with you and a lawn chair and enjoy the view.
Jim Weeder
Nice walking area. Be careful going out to the lighthouse very uneven. Beach access
Nadeau JW
Nice place to go and relax by the ocean or take a walk. A little breezy at times but beautiful scenery.
Pablo Bravo
Beautiful views. Ligth house is open to public
Sean Thompson
Amazing fort on Southern Maine Community College campus. Great views and fun to explore the old gun ports.
Jerri “Medic4Purple” Thompson
Very nice place to visit with lots of history.
Walk on the rocks out to visit Spring Point lighthouse. May be difficult with younger kids but worth the close up experience.
Corey Cromwell
Loved it. The view, the climb. Don't worry, the rocks are stable
Alicia
Beautiful walk, clean, the views are great day or night
Amber Philbrook
Very nice place. Could use more parking.
Nancy Fletcher
It is history and free. However, on one end of it, there needs to be a safety barrier because of the drop off. It could be very dangerous for kids.
Brandy Plunkard
Amazing views! I was surprised this fort was there with the lighthouse.
Rayven K
Amazing landmark to visit. Absolutely open and free to roam and take in the sights. Right behind Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, you'll have to follow the trail south. If you're still in Spring Point circle you're missing it. Best to visit in the daylight.
Yvette Dilallo
One of my favorite stops to walk, beach, sit n enjoy the Sun or Clouds. Great place for photos n functions. In my hood n I'm there lots! Nothing like fresh Ocean Air with an abundance of History.
S P Fletcher
Interesting contemporary American 🇺🇸 defensive site. Also seems to be a good modern spot for marriages. …
d bonney
Easy walk beautiful views. Beach for swimming. Walk to lighthouse is fun
Maya Broad
Gorgeous scenic walk near smcc college.
L.J. La Luna
This was a really cool spot before the lighthouse. It's an old abandoned fort from the 1800's. It's trenched in American history and a bit creepy. The whole family enjoyed walking around the area and viewing the water through the windows. A door was opened allowing you to walk around the base and see inside the fort.
Vigeon
We visited for a sunrise trip. Beautiful location, amazing pictures, fun with friends. Bring shoes safe for mud if it's rained recently, because it collects under the overhangs. The water is a very pretty green-blue just in front of the fort.
Bill L (bill9155)
Smaller parking lot, but a great lighthouse and park to see!
Troy Windhorst
Ruins of an old fort and battery. This one is spread out a bit and fully accessible. It's a great place to explore, relax, picnic, or snap a few pics.
Marshall
There's more history on the East Coast than an individual will ever know and understand ! Cheers
Breezy
Waterfront with views of the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, a nice place to take a walk around. For those who don't mind getting their feet wet, you can walk down to the water and along the rocks during low tide.
Larry J. Arszman
Nice. I enjoy light houses
Patrick O'Leary
This place is amazing. There’s a lighthouse and two abandoned forts. Not much of a beach, no shower, no camping, no bathroom, most people spend 20 minutes here. Great view of the harbor and Portland.
Neha Ojha
I love lighthouses. It was a nice walk to the lighthouse. Was fun walking and hopping on the rocks which led to the lighthouse. Parking is very limited but we parked little far away on the street and walked.
Laura Robertson
This place is so pretty! Good views of the water and portsmouth. It's a short walk along the breaker to the bottom of the lighthouse, well worth it! This is a good stop to stretch legs, check out the beach, and check off a cute little lighthouse.
Jeff Trägheit
Lot of fun. Beautiful walk.
Dianne Farrington
This is one of my absolute favorite places to wander around. There is no entrance fee but parking can be a bit of a struggle to secure. It's a large wide open area with multiple Relic buildings and there's even a Beach area where the dogs can run around(when the tide is out). Remember to leash your dog until you get to the beach. And I believe there's a point where dogs are not allowed on the beach because of nesting Birds. There are a couple of historical placards that give you some information about Fort Preble. This is also a great launching spot 2 kayak or powerboat / 2 one of the other forts in the water
Brandon Hepler
I absolutely adore all the forts around Portland, and this location is no different. Their is parking down the beach at Willard Beach or some visitor parking at Southern Maine Community College. From this Fort you have excellent views of the Casco Bay area and a few head lights (or lighthouses) if the weather is clear. If you'd like to watch passing boats or ships, this is a great location.
Elizabeth Romero
The park itself around there was wonderful. Only down side was when we went to walk to the light house there was people doing a photoshoot and nobody could go pass them. It was kind of inconvenient seeing people travel far and wide to come out there and cant.
Jonathan Bratten
A well-preserved piece of Maine's history, with defenses from the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the two World Wars.
Keith Tharp
Nice spot with decent access to the water and pretty dog friendly
Kanwal Chawla
Good site to go to but Fort Williams area is much better if you had to choose over the other
Arjun Menon
Interesting spot. Kind of enter at your own risk with the rocks. I see little kids brave enough to jump from rock to rock, just one miss and they'll be missing some teeth for sure.
Jeff Richards
Beautiful views of the harbor; little lighthouse is cool; very neat to see the water through the old windows of the fortifications and interesting to see how these protected the harbor.
Adam H
Great place yo take photos. We had a lot of fun here. Be carefull with little kids walking ther rock path their are a lot of large gaps
David Lee
easy to get to and great place hang for a few hours
Kyle Britt (Natl.ParksWineGuy)
PRO'S: Good view of harbor, Portland skyline, lifhthouse and fort.
CON'S: None
SUMMARY: Modest lighthouse with plenty of green space and public parking makes for nice stop to see Portland skyline from across Bay.
Ian Ouellette
Beautiful spot
mountain base farm
Enjoyed our visit quite a bit. We love touring old military bunkers. We love the history of them.
Kelly H
Lovely place for pictures. Great views of the harbor. Parts of the fort will pop up as you walking along.
Gerry Doyon
Wide open and clean space that offers great views of the ocean and the history off how Maine built Liberty ships.
Oliver Ray
They need a plaque telling you a bit of the history of the place but it's over all a very beautiful place.
Daniel Garman
This place was fun to explore too bad someone is not keeping it up.
Kendall Brune
