Reviews of Battery Steele
Ryan Fischlein
We hadn’t heard about Battery Steele until we arrived on Peaks Island. It’s a very cool and historic part of not just the island and state but also the country and world. Personally I feel it’s a shame that so many people have covered the he entire thing in graffiti. A local went as far to say there was a art festival. Like others have said if you plan on really exploring prong a bright flashlight. It is quite large and little to no light.
We went a few days after it had rained and the paths leading up to the battery were very soggy. If you have a car or bike there is an alternative way to get there, Florida Ave.
Darren MacRae
Very interesting, historical place on Peaks Island. Was mildly flooded when I visited so bring good shoes or Wellies if you want to explore it properly 🌊🌊🌊 …
Cory Morrison, CHS, CHRM
Great scenic walk with lots of amazing photo opportunities. Strongly suggest a headlamp or flashlight to see all the spaces.
Caelen Rose Ziegler-Horton
It’s very exciting to be able to explore a structure like this legally. Good place for photos and lots of interesting graffiti. Bring a good flashlight and some rubber boots, there are parts of this that are pitch black and flooded.
renee regan
Definitely bring a flashlight and shoes that can get wet. Many trails around and some lead you up to the overlook. Paths are a bit overgrown so be cautious and maybe get a good stick for webs and vines.
Gerald Azenaro
Fun place to explore. Huge WWII gun emplacements and concrete tunnels connecting them. Open for exploring, but dark, damp, and beware of broken glass and sharp stuff as well as holes in the floor. Every wall is covered with graffiti, some of it from an old art installation, some of it newer, and some of it is very cool.
Breezy
Cool place to walk around and take some pictures but the Battery is covered in graffiti (awesome graffiti, but graffiti nonetheless). Park your golf cart and take a short walk up to the battery to check it out.
Melissa Curran
It's so fun to come here during the fall months. The only thing I would recommend is a good pair of walking shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and a really strong flashlight!
Stacy W
Great stop as you’re biking around the island. Going inside requires a flashlight and shoes that can get muddy but the graffiti on the outer parts is fun enough to look at. Enter from the Florida Ave (actually it’s a dirt road) side for easy access.
Noodle Man
Very cool and creepy experience to get to explore one of the largest batteries in the US during WWII. Flashlight and shoes you don’t care about are suggested.
Wayne Cadman
This place is really cool. Bring a flashlight if you plan on running the tunnels. Too bad it's all tagged with spray paint. Really neat to walk the paths knowing the history.
Colby Geoffroy
Fun place to spend a few hours looking around at the graffiti and taking pictures or just echoing your voice down the long dark tunnels. Be sure to bring a flashlight and also be prepared for the possibility of getting wet since some parts of the battery are flooded.
Adi Avishalom
It is so awesome. Grab your friends, go to peaks island, rent a golf cart, drive to the other side of the island, and explore. Dont forget your flashlights. It is very very dark there.
Megan Ralston
Awesome experience. Would definitely recommend heading to Peaks Island to check out the whole battery Steele experience! There are multiple rooms full of graffiti and with it being an old concrete bunker, it's a great place to cool off on a hot summer day after hiking around the island.
Amy and Jase
Great bit of WWII history on the island. Be careful walking around though. Fall hazards
Deidra Constanty
Interesting place to see. I did not bring a strong flashlight. I would have liked to explore a little more. I would recommend renting a golf cart, the walk was a little hurried as we wanted to get back to the ferry.
Scott Rizzo
Really fun abandoned bunker. Bring a real flashlight. We used our phones and it's a little hard to see everything.
Michael Mulcahey
Fun and neat. It's like exploring an ancient (70 year old) relic that has been abused by everyone who has been there, except, the US government made it and abandoned it and it's ok.
Ben Durkit
Wear some thick shoes, it's an abandoned place with glass and mud everywhere. Super cool feeling walking through it all though. Kinda spookie.
Mark Zaborowski
Battery Steele is located on Peaks Island, Portland, Maine in Casco Bay. It's part of the Peaks Island Military Reservation, and was completed in 1942 for use during World War II.
It's dark and a bit muddy and wet, so bring a flashlight and boots. Lots of great graffiti painted by artists commissioned by the Peaks Island Preserve Organization.
It was one stop on a very informative tour given by Peaks Island Tours (thanks, Jeff).
Ezra Veitch
Creepy/cool/very fun! Bring good shoes, flashlights and a water bottle of you hike up onto the top of the bunker.
Dave W
Very interesting place to explore! Bring a flashlight!
Adriana Pinzon-Malaver
Pretty awesome and scary place to visit. I wish I knew a little bit more about the history behind it, but it has very nice views from the outside. I just advise to bring a lighter, lantern, or flashlight, it's pretty dark
Samantha Herriot
Worth a visit if you're on Peaks Island! It's covered in graffiti and a bit of trash. But still cool to explore, and has the best echo!
Anthony Gelatt
Ever changing, a little spooky. Interesting to imagine operations of this fort. Bring waterproof glosses and a buddy.
Erica Hamel
Super fun and creepy tunnels. Pitch black so bring a flash light, many rooms to explore.
Philip Famiano
If your looking for something besides the usual tourist traps, Battery Steele is right up your alley.
Chaz Hernandez
Historic. Fun. Maybe even a little creepy if you walk the dark cool damp tunnels. Definitely come visit this landmark when you're on Peaks Island!
Eamonn Hart
Must visit if you are on peaks island. I recommend bring a big flashlight and boots/shoes you don’t care about. Also I don’t recommend brings anyone under 5 as if you go on the roof it is a bit dangerous.
Joshua Tallman
Very cool old WWII relic. It only takes a half hour to sufficient walk around the whole thing. It's very dark, and cell phone lights don't help much, but you can navigate most of the darkness without getting lost. Some quirky highlights are all the graffiti, and a hidden trail that takes you on top of the structure
Julia P.
Terrifying. Definitely prefer this place in the daytime when you can see where you are going...that said we still needed two flashlights to be comfortable walking. Its cool to see some of the rooms and old jail looking areas. I definitely wouldn't have been able to go here alone.
The Epic Gaming Channel
There is a narrow trail that takes you back to see this...there are boards to walk on but expect to get your shoes wet and muddy. Once you're there it's all graffiti and it is dark...I would recommend enjoying it from afar or someone else's photos. If you go, take a flashlight!
Leanne Schild
My teens loved this place. Bit spooky maybe for sensitive little ones though.
Rob Debuhr
What a neat place, it is a little on the creepy side, bring a flashlight or a cellphone so you can see in the dark rooms.
Shawn Mcfarland
Pretty cool historical landmark on Peaks. The abandoned battery is full of grafitti and standing water at times. Bring a flashlight!
Nik Sheasby
What a cool piece of history, graffiti everywhere gives it a really cool look. Definitely worth checking it out.
Meredith Crain
First of all, Peaks Island, is beautiful and it's a wonderful boat trip. Then walking, bike riding or golf carting around the island is awesome, about 4 miles. Battery Steel is about 1 mile from dock if you head to the right. Bring a flashlight and enjoy exploring. So much fun!!
John Longan
Very interesting place to explore - made us want to do some research. Just don't wear your Sunday shoes, the trails are overgrown and muddy but it's worth the effort. Wandering through the dark connecting corridor and side rooms isn't spooky at all.
Lucas milliken
Very beautiful views and a very mysterious vibe through all the tunnels. A few friends and I explored almost all of it and was also pretty fun. Also a lot of other place to see around the island while your there so it was a good all day trip.
Johann Meyer
Pretty cool place! you can go there by golf cart
James O'Shea
Great place for urban explorers. Bringing a flashlight is a must and waders if you want to go into the lower level as the water is about 5 feet deep. Awesome ww2 remnant. Depending on your artistic style you may like the massive amount of graffiti all over the battery.
John Hong, MD
Eerie and fun. Maybe I play too many video games, so I felt like I was in a scary game. Using our smart phone lights we could barely see inside this fort. There are numerous rooms and people have spray painted art throughout. Unfortunately there was some litter as I could tell people party there at night. Nonetheless it was worthwhile embarking on this bizarre trip.
hunter dean
It’s a great place to go to have fun! Although, it is a bit dark so I would recommend a flashlight.
Dylan Brown
Cool, very eerie, the paths to the beach are awesome
Mitchell Rockenstire
Amazing. It has an amazing reverb giving it a nice spectacular feel. It used to have two 16 inch guns, but you can still see their mounts. This is an amazing visit for any WW2 fanatic or anybody interested in war structures. I highly recommend this place if you get on to peaks island.
Devin Clemons
Really cool graffiti art and some dark tunnels. Voices echo and making sounds is really fun. My friends and I created a symphony of our voices that extended through the entire tunnel. Walked through a very sketchy wood built path, but it was kinda awesome
Jeff Owens
A fascinating piece of history. My kids loved it and it is an experience you're unlikely to find anywhere else. I definitely recommend bringing flashlights, as phone flashlights will do the trick but having a quality light would improve the experience. It would be interesting to be able to find out the original use of each of the rooms and tunnels. There is a combination of amazing and awful graffiti inside. Also, be prepared for water and mud, especially if it rained recently. Ill be back in the future!
Nehru Enerio
Was a bit flooded during my April visitation but it's a pretty cool spot to take quick shot.
Aaron Mull
This place is awesome! It is not manned by any staff, is free to enter, and is all around a fun adventure! The inside was considerably cooler than outside. It was kind of like exploring a cave. There were small stalagtites hanging from the ceiling and it was damp inside with some standing water on the ground, but I was still able to move about in flip flops without getting my feet wet. One of the coolest parts was some of the graffiti! Some amazing art was done in there. You go anywhere here on the inside and out. Great views of the ocean too! Not fancy, but a lot of fun if you're looking for a little adventure!
Joe Roberts
Bring a flashlight and a camera! There are a few trails to the top on the seaside.
omahaLancersfan5000
So cool to be able to explore abandoned military bases!
Tom Kaliszewski
Peaks Island is a fun little getaway and Battery Steele is a unique place to visit while there. Bring a flashlight because inside is DARK!!
Melanie Paskavitch
Definitely walk through the dark halls, so much to see!
Caroline
Pretty cool place, lots of graffiti and significantly cooler than outside (as good as air conditioning). A bit wet and muddy unfortunately and quite hard to see even using phone flashlights.
Rory DuPont
Despite delapitaded condition, this is an important part of our nation's war history.
Pop culture boasts it as a graffiti gallery. There is some nice "graffiti art", but mostly unimpressive spray paintings closer to vandalism.
cwalkenisgod
An interesting, safe, abandoned bunker on a neat island.
If you're in the Portland area, it's no secret you can take a ferry to Peaks Island - which is home to the old bunker named Battery Steele. There's a short hike involved through a marsh from the main road, or you can get there from behind in a vehicle, but once you're there you can roam the inside of the structure.
During certain times of the year, Battery Steele is re-purposed for gatherings and events, but they are not largely advertised, if at all.
Would highly recommend if you like history, architecture, or exploring spaces. Bring flashlights.
William Bryan
Went out to Peaks Island to see what we could see. Though there is little on the island, it was still quite boarded up, Battery Steele jumped out at me on the map. After asking the nice folks at The Cockeyed Gull we rode over to see what it was. This place was amazing. If you like street art, go here. It's free, besides the ferry trip over, and well worth the time. A long dark tunnel filled with graffiti, bring some flashlights. One room we went in still had candles burning which was creepy, but the whole thing was amazing.
Mary Dybka Diorio
A must see historical stop on the island along with the Maine 5th Regiment Museum
Judy catino
Very weird place. Nobody around so you just explore on your own. If your into horror movies this is your place. Just hard to explain. Very interesting in a strange way. Bring lite because it's a cement bunker.
Julian Malcolm
Fully open to the public and in great shape besides all of the graffiti.
Amanda Burns
Awesome experience! Tight path but worth the walk.
Mark Baran
Very interesting historical site. I had no idea these existed. Recommended visit for any history buff. Bring your hiking shoes & a flashlight.
Zachary Hatch
Very cool. You need a flashlight. Phone flashlights won’t cut it. Also bring boots the lower levels are usually flooded
Laurie Best
Great childhood memories here.
Dan Cunliffe
Cool spot to visit on peaks island
Nicholas Finch (Fiching)
Very unique, but is overgrown and completely abandoned. Restoration of the bunker would make this a hot spot.
Keith Stockless
Go and see it for yourself, it's impossible to adequately describe the feeling of standing in the center of the tunnel and listening to the echoes of your own breath
Andrew Sauer
It's kinda interesting, but not terribly. It's a dirty, wet tunnel with graffiti in it. Bring a flashlight, cell phone cameras won't cut it.
Brady Sorensen
Worth the walk through the marsh. Take a flashlight, it's quite dark once you get inside.
M L
Great place! A must see
Doug Adelmann
Rented some bikes on Peaks Island and had a blast looking at the cool houses and the ocean.
