Reviews of Shy's Hill

Sad that one of the most pivitol locations of one of the most pivitol battles in American history is limited to a few acres of preserved land. What is preserved is beautiful. I guess I'd like to see a bit more information at the top of the hill but I appreciate what the preservationists have been able to do. You can feel the ghosts up there; if you listen close you can hear the lessons the dead are trying to share. I got chills!

Definitely wear shoes and winter does provide great views. This is a big hill with an interpretive board. It's quiet and peaceful. As a history buff you can sit back and just feel, thinking of how many lost their lives in this little place. The place was very clean of trash, most likely because of the neighborhood. There is a little bench to sit on once you reach the top, so a great place to just sit or take a break from the climb. Definitely worth the trip here.

shys Hill is a very cool place to check out if you are in Minnesota. There was a significant historical battle fought here where Minnesota was one of the main forces. The site is overall pretty small and doesn't have a lot to look at but there is a cool Minnesota plaque and a short walk to the top of the hill where you can see a Minnesota flag and get a good overview of city. If you are from Minnesota visiting here it's well worth it to check it out

Little too hot to be hiking to the top of a hill today but I did it anyway because I like to visit battlefield sites.
BATTLE OF NASHVILLE
Shy's Hill
On this hill was fought the decisive encounter of the Battle of Nashville December 16, 1864. At 4:15 P. M. a Federal assault at the angle on top of the hill broke the Confederate line.
Col. W. M. Shy, 20th Tenn. Inf. was killed and Gen.T. B. Smith was captured. The Con federates retreated over the Over
ton Hills to the Franklin Pike....

Not for strollers.
It can be tough for kids under 5, lots of steps and roots.
Nice area at top.
Don't forget you're on camera, there is a game cam setup there.
Also the cannons have been stolen, see pics

Cool hike, kind of a steep climb still historically cool either way. Definitely reccomend to anyone who loves history or hiking or both!

Hidden historical gem! The Hill where the battle for Nashville ended. The Union Army collapsed the entire Confederate left flank here- game over. Short, but pretty steep hike to top. Nice place to sit & chill for couple hours if you appreciate solitude.

There is not much left of the Battle of Nashville battlefield, but this is perhaps the best site. A trail leads to the top of the hill, and there is a marker for Minnesota troops.

Extremely well kept grounds, and a spectacular 365 degree Nashville view at top of a short hike. Replica cannons, a historical marker and photo board, and new marker with tribute to Minnesota troops who died for the Union when taking Shy's Hill on a brutally cold December day. At the peak, the grounds are cleared and never crowded. Three flag poles commemorate the Confederate Army of TN, Union Army of Minnesota, and U.S Flag. If I can find it, I'll include a picture I took 10 years ago of an Abraham Lincoln impersonator at top of battle site. Will also add the new MN marker at base of trail. Solemn, peaceful, beautiful, and well cared for by dedicated volunteers. 10 minute hike, moderate climb. Closed after dusk.

Blink and you'll miss the entrance. Great story and its impact on the battle of Nashville was critical. Be ready to climb to the top so you can imagine why the Union had to hold this hill in battle. Again love the story behind it, but the park itself is not well-maintained. Tree roots in the path, so be careful during your ascent and decent...although that gives you some taste of what the Confederates were up against! Wear good shoes for this site...

MUST VISIT Civil War site in Nashville
Atop the hill there are flags representing Minnesota, the U.S. flag, and the 1st National Flag of the Confederacy. The rebels were badly whipped at the hands of James Wilson's Cavalry Corps and multiple Minnesota regiments from A.J. Smith's detachment of the Army of the Tennessee.
There is a Napoleon 12-pounder facing north at the summit of Shy’s Hill, the final Confederate position at the Battle of Nashville before retreat.
Kelly Medina
Very well kept park. Should warn people there's not much room to park. It's inside of a neighborhood. Google Maps doesn't take you to the right spot. I had to go on Google earth to find it. Then typed in the address across the street to get to it

Shy's Hill is an essential stop for anybody on the battle of Nashville driving tour, or anyone who is into history, especially the civil war. The site is pretty muddy and slippery after rain so bring some heavy duty boots if you don't want to slip, and the climb up isn't too excerting, although it is a bit of a workout and steep. Other than that, there is some space for parking (not the case for other sites on the tour) and there is plenty of historical signage to explain the history and significance of the hill. At the top is a nice memorial and excellent views of the Nashville skyline through the trees. Overall it is a fun little hike and an interesting little known piece of history.

If you're into the history surrounding Nashville, this is a nice place to go. There's a nice info board at the bottom of the hill where you can read up, as well as a historic marker nearby. The view from the top of the hill is pretty fantastic too. My only word of warning is to be prepared for a really steep incline when venturing up the hill.
Andreas Ramos
It's a hill. Be sure to read about this hill. The Battle of Shys Hill started the collapse of the Confederacy. They never recovered.
David Horney
It's in a neighborhood. Parking is just a pull out between private driveways, big enough for maybe 3 cars. Slightly steep, well laid out trail...lots of roots so no strollers/wheelchairs. Great info available on the markers. Very peaceful...makes it difficult to imagine the death and destruction that covered this hill.
DJ Cleveland
Nice little park. Very steep to walk up and just a few flags at the top so not too much to see there. Very limited parking as well. If you are able to hike up, it is a good experience.
Melissa Alewine
Love it. Learned alot of history. That was a hill to climb though.
Jason Billingsley
Loved it but I feel like these sites are going to be gone (erased) before too long
Dave Jones
I enjoyed the site. It is not very large but I appreciate the historical society saving this property for it's historical purpose.
Andy Lopušnak
Worth a stop. If you blinking, you'll miss it. Google Maps does a good job of telling you where it's at. Nice for some photos of the two cannons. I went in the warm winter so no snow.
Nancy Robbins
Fun fast little hike. Pretty area. It was very short with lots of exposed roots and upgrade so my elderly mom couldn't do it.
Grant Anderson
Great to see this old civil war battlefield! I read up on the Battle of Nashville before I came, and it was a sober experience to hike up the hill. The site is clean and well maintained, and in the middle of a nice residential neighborhood.
Elise Moore
Space to park one or two cars only. There is some explanation there. The path is maintained but is rough and steep. Wear tennis shoes not flip flops. No signage on Harding Rd pointing you to the most important site of the Battle of Nashville. You just have to know it's there. Astounding
Rachel Hurst
Beautiful spot to stop if you have time!
Bob Boland
The hill and path to get there are steep but it is definitely worth the climb. Any fans of Minnesota history will want to visit the monument here.
Amy Nemecek
A peaceful place, and I'm sure the views overlooking the city are beautiful in winter when the leaves are off the trees. I'm glad we stopped and made the trek to the top.
Kay Tribble
Quick stop with short hike. Nothing much but nice view and few things to read.
Andras M Marton
An interesting site; however, the pathway is a bit rough (loose dirt and riddled with tree roots), and the American flag was is disrepair. More information about the significance of the site and it's greater context would have made the site better. We learned more on the internet than the placard at the site. Regrettably, three Battlefield Map box was empty.
Chris Ferrara
Quiet, forested, reverent memorial in suburban residential setting. Great views of surrounding area of Nashville, especially in winter after the leaves fall.
Sweaterz
Hell of a short hike. *sigh* lots of info to read along the way. Great veiw from the top too! Unexpected gem in the middle of a neighborhood. If you are into it, there is a geocache hidden at the top.....
Bob Bowser
What a great bit of history right in our back yard. As these places dwindle you must visit them before they are gone. It was sad to see a little bit of vandalism and disrespect to our historic places.
Amelia Corrales
Very good historical background. The parking is in front of where the GPS takes you.
steve constantino
Very cool. Close to town. The path litti a little steep and slick after rain. Great piece of history.
Tim Goers
Very small with little to no information. Mostly just a tiny park. I had to google everything to find any information. Almost nothing there.
Daniel Jones
Great place for a photo shoot!!
Gary Easterwood
It should be called Shys Steep Mountain that old fat guys should not climb!
Steve Bryan
Amazing that the property developer in the 50's had foresight to leave this untouched.
Katherine Paris
Love the history in the town I live. Have visited twice and is such a great view from the top.
Paul Ramunno
No cannon only a few flags. Steep hike up hill but worth the trip if you're a civil war buff
Alex Lovett
Cool, small, out of the way park with a great view of green hills
Demoss Home
Neet to see the cannons. The trail was too muddy and slippery to make it to the top.
David Parmer
Hard walk to the top. Not for the faint hearted. Beautiful view at the top.
Bobby Lawrence
One of the few sites that interpret the battle of Nashville! I look forward to the next step in its improvement!👍👍😀 …
Robyn Balcom
A short walk around a significant Civil War battlefield Honors all who fell there. Meaningful.
Chris McAlpine
Great Italian food and excellent service. Good value.
Mike Bridges
Nice place to walk and reflect

Very humbling and beautiful. Slippery when wet.

As with most battlefields, this place is quiet yet awe inspiring.
