Reviews of Indiana Historical Society
Suzanne B
It was a lovely museum, and a phenomenal gift shop.
I truly enjoyed learning about how they repair historic books, and photographs. They have a fantastic section of historical books/library.
I felt as though it was more of a general museum, and not really focused on the history of Indiana?
Since it is listed as the Indiana Historical Society/Museum I expected to learn more of Indiana’s history?
I actually learned much more about Indiana, on my free tour at the State House nearby.
Museum has a nice entrance to the canal, and I appreciated free parking with admission to the museum.

The Christmas tree festival is one of my kids favorite stops during the holiday season. The pickle search and finding our favorite tree can only be topped by the delicious cookies we get at the Cafe. Highly recommend. You can also visit the history exhibits which are excellently done.
Jeremiah Kinnamon
Such a wonderful resource for history lovers and genealogical researchers. I could spend hours amongst the books, registries, and records.
This is a hidden gem, a very lovely building with a trove of historical items. There's also a superb gift shop with unique and interesting items.
Jo Ellen
Enjoyed my visit to the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis- especially worth a visit during their Festival of Trees. I really liked learning about Madam C.J. Walker, one of the exhibits currently on display, a fascinating story! The Indiana Historical Society offers 3 time period actors you can interact with and ask questions related to that exhibit. This was quite interesting. The cafe looks delicious, and the gift shop is well stocked. We were there during the Festival of the Trees which was festive to see. Several trees have hidden pickle ornaments you can hunt for as you tour around. We spent about 2+ hours here.
John Ginder
We went for the festival of trees at winter. The trees were amazing 70 some trees Christmas trees decorated and made to be representing a certain thing and it was absolutely just fun to go see.
Mark Barnes
We had a fun time here. We got to see a short version of the nutcracker which was great. My son loved looking at all the diffrent trees. It was really neat in here.
T L
A very lovely building with many events throughout the year. A favorite of our family is seeing the Christmas Tree exhibit each season!
Susan Petrey Carriker
Fantastic museum with engaging exhibits, and knowledgeable, friendly staff. We particularly enjoyed the Cole Porter exhibit and the historical documents exhibit.
Renato Martins
Fantastic place for history and culture. Very well maintained building. People there are friendly and professional.
k. whatley (Mswhatleysworld)
There is a beautiful display of trees for Christmas. There's a $15 charge. There is also a Cole Porter and holocaust exhibit.
Joshie McGlaughlin
Was nice but some exhibits were closed when we went. Food at the cafe was great.
R Higgins
The architecture was beautiful. The staff were friendly but not overbearing. The exhibits were interesting enough to engage the whole family.
Stephen Francia
This place was pretty cool! It's not relatively a BIG museum (if you're looking for that), but what they have is impactful to Indiana history! The grounds/museum themselves are gorgeous! Well worth a stop, and you'll need under an hour. Handicap accessible as well!
L Grace
Went to the MadeMan Improv at this venue. The theater is spacious, seats are comfortable and the sound system is very nice. The outside is very relaxing and beautiful.
Julie R. LeHunt
Went for the last day of The Festival of Trees. Loved it! Do wish the Stardust Cafe offered at least coffee/cocoa/tea/soft drinks, & maybe snacks, later than 3:00p. Otherwise, I love the facility & all it offers (it was a lovely venue for a small wedding I sang at a few years ago).
Jonathan Foster
We went as part of a field trip. It's clean, well laid out, and the interactive exhibit on the Holocaust survivor was very well done. But be aware, it's basically a museum for documents. It's not the most exciting place!
Cafe/Food is available in the basement with a door to the canal. Parking was about $7 for a 3 hour visit.
The Festival of Trees is about 75 artificial trees displayed around the museum, each sponsored by different businesses and decorated with various creative marketing.
Catherine Elyea
Wonderful place to come too, went for festival of trees this year and it was beautiful.
Dan Bartlett
My wife and son really like to go look at the Christmas trees at the Historical Society during the holiday season. This is not really my idea of a great time, but if you lile that sort of thing then there are a lot of trees to look at. I also went to a presentation about BIM in the auditorium there once as well. Other than that, I'm not sure what else goes on during the year.
They wanted, I think, $13/person for admission to the Christmas tree thing -- that's way more than I believe it is worth. Our local library has a couple of passes that you can check out for free, so if you are planning to go that might be a better route.
Riva I
The content was really good, however there wasn’t much for children. It had been a while since we’ve been there last, but I remembered at least a couple kid friendly exhibits. The Eva Kor exhibit was really good, but the attendant did not hide his distaste for our two nine yr olds being in tow. (They learned a few things, didn’t touch anything, and asked the hologram appropriate questions) A museum is meant to share information and promote learning - not shun it. If they do not want kids there, there needs to be some sort of age restriction posted prior to paying. Otherwise, I think it would’ve been a satisfactory visit.
Karla Beier
Trees were beautiful, people were nice... Had a great time. I forgot to mention the food at the cafeteria. It was absolutely amazing. You really want to try that while you're there.
Ronn Brown
Festival of Trees is always a great time, but anytime is a good time to go really. With ever changing exhibits you will always learn something new.
Jill Roark
We took our niece and nephews to see the festival of trees. We all had a blast. We will make this part of our holiday tradition in the future
John Kurton
T
A relaxing and educational event evening at the museum. The trees were fabulous and the living exhibition of Madame Walker was excellent. I intend to go back and explore the other exhibits in the near futurr.
Mrs. Dotson
We attended the Festival of Trees and had a blast. Took my 6 year old cousin and she was beyond thrilled. She had a blast trying to locate all the Pickles and the Elf on the Shelf. Also a lerfect event to bring out-of-town guests.
Shawn Blazier
Fun time. Got to see 80 Christmas trees. Multiple live historical experiences. Will validate parking if you park in their garage. On canal so fun views. Nice cafeteria type area as well. Friendly staff and decent prices for what you get.
William Michael
Amazing. My kids learned more from the living history displays in one day as compared with one year in school. Could have stayed a lot longer.
The Christmas trees are excellent.
Josh Frye
You need to go during Christmas time to see the numerous trees. But I will say outside that, they have great exhibits that give you insight into little know bits of history here in Indiana. If your going here, use their parking lot and make sure to get your validated parking ticket inside.
Mark Johnson
The Christmas Tree displays were a lot of fun, definitely recommend it during the holidays!
Cregg Fox
This place is very cool, beautiful building ,awesome exhibits. The Christmas tree exhibit was beautiful!!!
Elsie Robinson
The Christmas Tree display was wonderful and the free entry for educators was very appreciated!!
Donna Johnson
Only had one hour on our tour but was awesome.. highly recommend
Tatyana Fedorikhina
Great history exhibits pertaining to famous Indiana historic figures as well as Indiana tribes that are now extinct. The festival of trees put me in the Christmas mood.
Sara Ballard
Lovely venue located right in the middle of downtown on the canal. Theater is perfect acoustically and seats are comfortable.
Marty McMann
Very unique and interesting place. It wasn't at all what I expected. I thought it would be like a museum instead it's more of an interactive history lessons. Certain areas had actors acting out moments of the past.
Carol Flora
Friendly workers at the theater, gift shop amd ticket/information center. Beautiful facility. Can't say enough good about it!
Floyd Nash Fix It Dad
Good experience but not a lot to see. The building is absolutely massive but they really only have maybe 3 good exhibits. Each of those is really well done but overall it just wasn't a lot of content for the price. Still worth a stop if you're trying to take in some of the history and museums in Indianapolis. I love to support any local historical society so would always recommend a visit just to show support.
Bill Felker
Beautiful building we went for the Christmas trees. Fun times for all ages.
Gloria Pettigrew
Everyone you must visit this place. Features historic information, beautiful architecture, good food at the cafe and a great place to go on a date.
rita milton
Excellent place! Lots of History about Indiana
Vicki Mansfield
Very educational informative and entertaining exhibits that all tie back to Indiana.
Amber Toomer
Great events and beautiful facility. Not super well thought out in layout for the Circus Day event, but a great community event nonetheless!
Alexandra Nashville
Employees were willing to answer any questions, a wonderful experience. I think everyone should go down Eva Kors exhibit it was a truly sentimental thing.
Tara Hunter
My first time going today and I had a blast! I loved the immersive time travel! Probably one of the coolest and innovative things I've ever seen at a museum. Such a cool way to learn about our history, with the most cutting-edge technology.
Maurice J. Woodson
It is nice to see they have exhibits about people of color which reflect positive things in our lives. The Walker exhibit is great. We need more exhibits with people of color.
Trice A
It was so much fun to see all the different trees!!!
Shahram Ghadimi-Navai
Very nice, interactive with live performers in period custumes playing various characters.
Jennifer Dueweke
Festival of Trees is a wonderful, family friendly event held every year. Top it off with a yummy from Stardust Cafe in the basement!
Regina Smith
The Festival of the Trees is nice, 75 trees! Great family outing!
Darrin Lause
Lunch on the canal at the Historical Society was great on a beautiful St. Patrick's Day afternoon.
Craig H
A great place to visit and to learn about the history of our state, and even the world.
James Gray
Always a good time at the Indiana Historical Society. The Festival of Trees was a great reason for my wife and I to visit again.
Stephanie Metz
The Eva Kor exhibit was well worth it do the virtual reality
Mike Lipe
I don't know how I did it...It was so enthralling, I actually fell asleep while walking.
Charity Stephney-Snowden
Very nice and clean... Perfect place to host a movie or play at.!
Robert Ruble
Wonderful collection of historical artifacts and memorabilia. Majestic building overlooking Canal Walk.
Erin Engelau
Very cool place. The Eva exhibit was wonderfully done
Dreamgirl Beth
White Party on the Canal was wonderful! Just wish that I had a date to dance with and ride the gondolas with.
Beverley Holeman
I truly believe this museum is a wonderful place. The restaurant is great! The food is good and the staff is amazing. When you are finished, take a walk around the canal. You will be glad you did.
Cherri
The Exhibits here are truly Amazing! In particular we loved the Madam CJ Walker Exhibit. Even has a Remake of the Model T car she drove. Also there the Indianapolis Women's club and the Music exhibition is quite an experience! Will visit again.
Jack Leonard
It had been several years since I had been in the museum and I was very impressed by the range of exhibits that they currently have. Since we went on a holiday, they had special presenters in several areas of the museum who were dressed and acted as though they lived in era, so they would answer questions about the present but not the future in their context.
Deborah Flowers
We had a function at the Indiana Historical Society. The staff was amazing and helpful. I wish I could have stayed after the function as the exibit looked incredible. I would have like to have seen it.
Ann Brown
The museum was closed for the event but the decor was interesting and ornate.
Larry Lynch
Awesome. The Festival or Trees was so beautiful.
Lourdes Martinez
Great exhibits, friendly staff, free parking with admission! Really enjoyed the Festival of Trees.
Joe Busby
The IHS offers a great view of Indiana's rich and vibrant history and provides an atmosphere that is welcoming to all age groups.
Robert Heider
You need to book reservations but this is still a fascinating place to visit. The reservations are just to make social distancing easier so the experience can still be enjoyable. If you're going and want a bite to eat, the Cafe is open from 11 to 3, we missed by 7 minutes but several people told us the new vendor has outstanding food. We'll be back and hopefully try the new menu.
Angel Williams
Such a fun museum! In addition to a great downtown local along the canal, the exhibits themselves were awesome! I’ve never been to a museum with so much “live” interaction. The concept of time machines to transport you back to a space in time was as much fun for the adults and it was for children. The actors were very knowledgeable on anything you could thing to ask them. The architecture of the building is also very special. It has strong character but immediately, you feel like all ages are welcome and encouraged to “play”.
Michael Antonio Canganelli
Eva Mozes Kor Holocaust exhibit was very educational
regina jorgensen
My favorite time to visit is during the festival of trees. The person who played Madam CJ Walker did a phenomenal job. My middle schoolers enjoy the ancestry link in the library.
Megan Anderson
The Indiana Historical Society is a best kept secret here in Indy but it shouldn't be! It's a museum with multiple floors which takes 2D history into something you can walk into and explore. The "You Are There" exhibits allow you to walk into an image, talk to the actor that plays the character from that image and learn more.
The Festival of Trees is a beautiful Christmas tradition with dozens of community decorated trees spread throughout the building.
sura gail tala
Such a treasure. In the Cole Porter Room there was a real person and player piano and she sang from a selection of songs I picked!!
Thomas
We love this place, a great spot to take the whole family
melissa strange
Complete a mystery solving event. Great atmosphere, friendly staff. It was a great evening. Won prize for the best costume
Sharon
Loved the Eva Kor exhibit! So well done and very interesting
Larry Harrison
I went to the Historical Society Museum with my 19 and 10 yo granddaughters. Everyone had a very enjoyable time. My 19 yo was impressed by the scope of the exhibits and the 10 yo liked the hands on areas. Both girls are excellent students and enjoy learning. We also ate in the Stardust Cafe and the food was excellent. A great day was had by all.
Taiya Porter
Awesome amazing staff, very friendly and knowledgeable. I love the cafe downstairs, they have a unique menu and there signature sandwiches are amazing. Love the seating out by the Canal. My favorite time to go is for Concert on Canal and Tree Festival. My niece and nephews love it...don’t forget Circus Day! 💕💕💕 …
J Robinson
Great singing in the Cole Porter room. An easy entertaining walk through the museum. A nice program on MLK day in the auditorium by "The Situation"
Lizz Comer
Tree festival is amazing
Barry Noell
Beautiful building, went to see the festival of trees and loved the experience. The Cafe on the canal level had great food and nice atmosphere.
Brian Newlin
What a fantastic experience! I didn't know this hidden gem was downtown!
Jacob Dye
This is a very neat place to visit downtown. I went for the Festival of Trees and it was a really cool event and would highly recommend it during the Holiday Season. They had 80 uniquely different trees with each having there own them. They also have a Colts museum along with various other museums and things to do there. Again, I would highly recommend a visit if you are downtown.
Bonita Andrews
The whole day was such a treat ! Building is exquisitely decorated with 92 CHRISTMAS trees. The Cafe was phenomenal. I chose Italian sausage lasagne with salad, champagne dressing, 2 garlic bread toast WITH creamy tomato basil soup. THE BEST. Worth every penny. Very nice gift shop. Friendly staff.
Jo Manns
Lots of Indiana History of its beginning and through Jim Crowe to present day. Focus on the contributions of African Americans, Music, Madame C.J. Walker..a great p la e to visit. June Rochelle a great singer and song writer sings Cole Porter songs in the Cole Porter Room. A must to hear! A good day trip for the family!
Jeanette Jones
This is an amazing place! The venue is gorgeous, placed just off the canal for a beautiful view out the large bay of windows. The exhibits are always up to date and so lifelike! All of the exhibits we're interactive and educational for adults and children alike. There is always something new to do or look at!
Adam Riviere
My lady and I were married here in 2014 because it is a beautiful building as well as a great price for the size of our wedding and reception! They offer an option for extra decor but it is not needed since the beauty of this building is able to stand alone without extra. The interactive exhibits are amazing! The design of each space, the reenactment performed by the actors as well as the knowledge they share is impressive.
Sarah Zell
I went to see their 92 different themed Christmas trees and really enjoyed myself. The staff who played the role in the exhibit with the preacher did a great job! He was pretty versed on religion as well as Indiana history. We were also given a little lesson on how they preserve old Indiana manuscripts-fairly fascinating.
Karen
Festival of Lights, Holiday Trees, 80 sponsored with unique themes.
On display Dec 2017.
Michele Hahn
Attended the Festival of Trees and enjoyed it very much! Do it every year and still love it. It is a can't miss for our family, great tradition.
Tyler Donaldson
My gosh does Indianapolis have some amazing history! The exhibits were very detailed and articulated well. The building was clean, and well kept. The staff were very welcoming, and eager to answer any questions you have. Anytime they are open is a good time to go. It was not very busy, which is a shame. More people should take advantage of such a fantastic gem, inside the city.
Matthew Moo Moore
can someone please tell me how to find Pawnee, Indiana on this godforsaken app??
Cody Dubose
Awesome place for family fun.
Barbara Lawless
The festival of trees is spectacular every year. It seems the participants outdo themselves year after year.
I also love the displays of times past. Currently, the two are of a civil war mother, very moving & an itinerant preacher in Danville in the 1830's. The actors stay in character & make you feel as though you are in the past.
I highly recommend the experience.
The gift shop is very special with many unique gifts and very affordable.
Allison Hakes
Good exhibits, very educational.
Greg Surface
Very clean. Friendly staff very nice layout. Was there for company meeting and banquet. Food was excellent meeting area comfortable with easy access for both direction of hall and stage. Spacious dining area in large foyer with grand design. Bar was staffed clean and organized with knowledgeable helpful staff.
Brandy Wood
Gorgeous location for a 150 to 250 person event!
Zac Bow
A wonderful museum and resource located in the heart of the canal district in Indianapolis
Kimberly DeGuglielmo
This is a beautiful building located in the downtown area. The space is large enough to host an office Xmas party or function. At the moment they are having a beautiful Xmas display of Xmas trees. If you have some spare time I suggest you go the admission is very reasonable. I took off a star b/c it wasn't very visible from the street.
Marie Gail Stratford
Excellent museum on Indiana state history. The museum does a good job of sharing history of all Hoosiers--regardless of race or gender. The exhibits include information on prominent Hoosiers including both blacks and whites. The Cole Porter exhibit is excellent and includes a singer who sings his songs as well as shares information about his life and work.
Ashley Stephen
A great experience learning about the Hoosier State in history.
Nancy McClelland
This place does such an amazing job with really making you feel like you're in the middle of a historical moment with their "You Are There" series. They also have a lovely illustration on how conservation is done most effectively. The historical context in exhibits and the curation are top-notch. The programming is great and the staff knowledgeable and friendly.
Quentin Smith
Excellent place to hold events. Current event is the Festival of Trees 🎄! If you haven't been to check it out yet. You really should, very amazing. Over 80 trees 🎄 to see & vote for your top 3 throughout the whole month of December! Excellent customer service and clean establishment! Definitely recommend this place for all of the family!
Chris Nelson
Stopped in to see the festival of trees and took the time to check out all of their other exhibits. Very cool live actor in the civil war letters exhibit. The Colts exhibit was very informative and interactive. Very helpful guides through out the place. Stopped in to check out their retail store. They had an impressive amount of Indiana items and a wide assortment of great history books.
Jason Craft
Not the biggest or flashiest, but it is very nice. Easy way to kill a few hours in the afternoon, then take a walk along the canal. We went for the colts exhibit, which was a tad underwhelming, but really enjoyed the Gettysburg interactions and digital postcard stuff. Can't wait to go back for the Christmas tree display when they're all done. Well, my wife can't anyway.
Donna Wiseman
Went on a 'free day'. We hadn't been to the Historical Society in several years and really enjoyed it. There were several other events going on at the same time (Circle Center Classic I believe), which made getting there a bit of a challenge because of the roads blocked. But it cut down on the number of people at the Museum which made it nice to browse and enjoy the various exhibits. Considering a membership for return visits.
Tree Furr
This place was fun to learn about Indiana history. I like the interactive displays and the "You Are There" exhibits were fun. I also like that the staff are knowledgeable of the place and they are very nice.
Gary Peterson
Military free entrance, gift shop had affordable items.
Audrey Spear
Loved the living exhibits especially the Madame C Walker and Gennett Records. I learned A lot about local history and gained a new appreciation for how we live now!
Anissa Bender
Love coming here. The kids live it too.
Angela T
Always something interesting to see and learn about our state when I visit here. We love the festival of the tree's especially.
Marilyn Jacobs
Visted to see the You are there series on Madame Walker. but also saw the one on Angel Mounds. They are fantastic. The actors that play that play the people could get an academy award. They stay in character and represent the people they are playing so well. I really start thinking I am talking to the people. I did a bit of research on Madame Walker before I went and had some things I was curious about. In asking the question have to remember they will pretty much only respond to what happened in 1915 and prior. There are also guides who can help you with questions after the time frame. Every one of the You Are There series I have seen has been excellent.
Karen Cheek
I was here for an event, but have visited the museum numerous times. Love the "You are There" exhibit, the Cole Porter room, and all of the artwork on display on the mezzanine. Don't miss their summer Concerts on the Canal series! Always a blast!
Moises Cruz
They have nice exhibitions in a beautiful and it is next to a big parking building!
Michael Virgin
Great place to visit. There is a video at the start that gives the history of various people and places in Indianapolis. Could use more exhibits as there are actually not many there.
Matt Krych
The Cole Porter section was very cool with the player piano and the live singer, but the rest of the museum was underwhelming. The living history sections are a cool idea but I had no idea what to ask the historians. Maybe give the museum patrons a piece of paper with some interesting questions to ask to at least start a conversation.
Keshet Berlinsky Edry
Super well done. Great use of technology, actors and media to tell amazing stories.
Free parking and free admission for teachers!
Highly highly recommended!
thomas buchler
Love coming out here. Its fun, educational and inexpensive to spend a good few hours. The interactive experiences are always great. I really liked the one based off a letter from a solider from the battle of Gettysburg. It was riveting.
Sue Foster
Saw 80 decorated Christmas trees for various companies. Creative, beautiful, thought-provoking. Each one was awesome in their own way! Voted on top three favorites. Will return next year for sure!
purple panda
It is a good museum. We went for circus day, my kids had a lot of fun. The fundraiser had reasonably priced activities and a fantasitc facepainter/ballon twister and the magic show and animal shows were awesome. My only complaint and reason i gave 4 stars is the food his super pricy and nothing wonderful... 10 dollars for a grilled chees sandwich... That crazy!!! Otherwise it was a great time
Paula Wilson
Always a great experience. Everyone there is so nice. We enjoyed the festival of trees today....WONDERFUL!!
Shea Wynn
These people doing amazing job of keeping Indiana history alive. It's in a beautiful part of downtown right on the canal. While you are checking out the museum or heading to your next meal down below check out the schedule for the summer events. They have concerts All Summer Long Outdoors where you and your family and friends can sit along the canal in the lawn listening to the band
Melanie Chacon
This museum had a wonderful exhibit featuring Madame C.J. Walker with actors speaking and answering questions reflecting the related time period. Madame Walker, herself, shared about her business success.
Donna Lovelady
I have been a long-time fan of the Indiana Historical Society. However, the last couple of visits have been lackluster. Perhaps since I attended their free Thursdays in summer events, they didn't feel the need to provide a full program. However, this would be a great opportunity to gain new members.
And, I am still hoping for the return of the Member Plus 1 membership.
Barb Lasher
Good presentation of "you were there" events showing 1839 and 1939 historical times. Actors remained true to time period while responding to questions and provided interesting facts appropriate for our elementary aged granddaughter. The musical Cole Porter presentation was enjoyable. Lots to see.
Nathaniel Edmunds Photography
The Historical Society offers an interesting backdrop for photos. We love the staircase for wedding ceremonies, especially. And, being along the canal is such an added bonus for events. We've been fortunate to photograph many events at this venue over the years.
Yvette Keene
Went on 8/1/18
Definitely want to visit without kids. Didnt really have much to do for little kids. The building was beautiful though. I dont know if we just went when not many people where there but felt like the employees are very passionate about what they do because almost everyone wants to interact and talk and keep an eye on you. So if you have a ton of questions they are definitely going to answer them or find someone to answer it for you. In the very beginning they have touch screens that give information about Indiana and breaks it down by counties....... would like to have time to read up on some things from there. Definitely a place to visit and go on the canal afterwards. Oh parking is free if you park in the lot off New York.
Jill smith
Always find unique books and a wide variety of gifts in shop
Always make it a stop when in town
Alexandra LaPointe
BEST. VENUE. EVER. As soon as we walked in we knew this was it. It is so beautiful and it was sooo perfect. Everything about the venue is great, right on the canal for beautiful pictures and beautiful inside. I would suggest a day of coordinator to help with the set up and decor.
Coy J Hutcherson
This place was awesome. We went on a guided tour. The actors stayed in character and answered any time specific questions we had. It was an informative and interactive experience. I'm looking forward to going back with the whole family.
Cindy Hicks
Always an enjoyable experience at the center!
Sharon Grider
First time visit. Loved the Christmas trees display. Also enjoyed the Madam Walker display.
rhonda chestnut
Was a enjoyable experience. The trees were amazing and so beautiful. Was with a group and a first time for several. Would highly recommend tickets very reasonable. Friendly staff.
Kelli Hofer
Colts exhibit is really cool and the tons of Christmas trees
MERC #JSM
Clean, professional atmosphere. Wonderful place for a stage play. I was very impressed.
Right off the canal. Beautiful view
James Marsh
We came here for their Festival of Trees, which was incredible. The rest of the exhibits were open, and we stopped in a few of them. We definitely want to come back when we have time to see more of the historical exhibits.
Jamie Tindall
I took a class to the Indiana Historical Society to begin a project as I do every year. It is amazing! The live rooms in which people learn by being immersed in an actual picture are maybe the most engaging activity I've ever seen for children of any age. These experiences are constantly chamging, so you can go back again and again. The classes explaining how documents are preserved, repaired, and studies are also fantastic. I could spend hours in the interactive archives of Indiana history. I highly, highly recommend putting Indiana Historical Society on the list for family, class, or individual outings.
Brian C
A great historic building right on the canal. We were there for a wedding and it served us very well; hors d'oeuvres upstairs followed by dinner and dancing on the ground floor. Acoustics were fine, ambience was good, and the friends it was spent with were great.
Michael Naish Jr
this is a beautiful building inside and out. we visited several different types of exhibits when we were there. some had live actors and provided a great deal of additional interaction. a few were based on short films and interaction with electronic media. all were very well done.
William P
Great place with plenty of live and engaging historical exhibits. I really enjoyed the Civil War living exhibit, and the Cole Porter room. A must see if you're travelling to Indianapolis
Lisa Maydwell
The Indiana Arts Commission conference was very informative.
Dave Meeker
Great place to see the Festival of Trees.
Glad to see they finally gave photo credits to Rob Banayote!
Evan Eldridge
Great museum! Festival Of Trees is a must see every Christmas season. This museum is free for military, active duty and vets.
Josef Laposa
New Christmas tradition: Viewing and judging decorated Christmas trees at History Center. Local businesses, schools, individuals compete for best overall. Nice place to eat at Stardust Cafê and walk it off looking at trees!
Jenni King
Such great museum! I love the Festival of Trees, and the Madame CJ Walker exhibit was well done.
Anthony Binford II
This place is awesome the colts exhibit is pretty cool. The live action back in time exhibits are cool as well. Almost makes you feel like you did travel back in time.
Ellen Gill
Indiana History Center is always wonderful Festival of Trees puts the experience over the top!
Kyla Richardson
This was my first time here I was invited to watch a live play What Happened To Love and it was great I had an amazing time..
Augustus Cooley
Gift shops are nice and have a great selection of items sourced from and about Indiana. Seasonal decorations look great. Quiet atmosphere for a peaceful walk.
Peter H. Smith
Live "you are there" sessions with actors who know their history and play it out for you. Was not crowded which is a bit of a shame. They contextualize the history and their exhibits will hold the attention of fourth graders through senior citizens.
Hunter Heath
At my most recent visit, the L.S. Ayres & IN Constitution interactive exhibits required "suspension of disbelief," but for those willing to play along, it was an amusing way to learn. Children brought to them were puzzled and probably understood little of what they were seeing. The T.C. Steele art exhibit gave a once-in-a-lifetine chance to see a large group of privately held and seldom-exhibited paintings by Indiana's iconic painter. The interactive computer-based history room is the one area where a visitor could spend hours digging into specific areas of IN history. Other exhibits were restricted to panels with text and photos about various aspects of state history. Friendly and helpful docents were ready for conversation about the exhibits. The Cole Porter room has brief biographical information & photographs, but the highlight for me was the charming and talented young lady who sang Porter songs on request. While I enjoy my visits, be aware this is a small museum as part of IHS's larger missions. Unlike, say, the Indiana State Museum, it's not a place where most visitors would enjoyably spend the day. It will be best appreciated when visited for the special exhibitions or specific research. Happily, there is convenient parking in the museum's adjacent lot (but it is small and at times full).

We came here for the Christmas Tree Display. I don't know much about the place to be honest. But it was nice inside. The tree display was cool and represented several local Indiana businesses.
Ledrena Girton
We had a great time. There were plenty of things to do. The magic show was funny and she loves Silly Safari. I am sad that the Circus is gone.
Curt Barnard
An interesting place, to be sure. The live interactive exhibits were a bit awkward. We got an eerie amount of personal attention. Interacting at the actors was not fluid. It was not clear what kind of interaction we were supposed to be having.
Michael Montgomery
Excellent museum, knowledgeable people and worth your time.
Hannah Taylor
The Indiana historical society has a very beautiful building that seems like it has its own history! We were there for an even in the evening, so not much was open, but the staff we interacted with were all very helpful.
A.M. Jackson
I stopped in here last minute to visit for the first time. Every single person was so very nice. I didn't know what they had to offer so each person took the time to explain their exhibition space. I highly recommend going.

Sage Arbor
Free for teachers. Unique live rooms, where actors transport you back in time, so could be a different experience each time. The drug compounding room had great actors, other rooms such as canning fruits had actors not as into it so the experience wasnt as good.
Julie Bumb
Attended a Wedding there. It was GORGEOUS. What an interesting venue. Small, but fantastic. Interesting, great for pics. Room for kiddos to run. Great scenery outside. Loved it.
