Staff is very friendly, caring and very professional. Dr. John Pilavas is an outstanding doctor. I had cataract surgery on both of my eyes and I’m so pleased with the results. I was very nervous about the procedure but he made me feel confident and relaxed. He called me that same evening after both surgeries to see how I was doing, even though I saw him the next day for follow-up. I would highly recommend Dr. Pilavas to anyone who wants a more personal experience, rather than just another patient.

I made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. John Pilavas for laser cataract surgery, and I knew right away I found the perfect surgeon for me. He answered all my questions and I never felt rushed. He is extremely knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. He explains everything in detail. Everyone in his office is so nice and accommodating. Debbie, Nicky, and Erika are sweethearts. His office is very comfortable and welcoming. You almost feel like you’re sitting in someone’s living room. I’m glad to say, my surgery went perfectly. I knew that I had dense cataracts because the surgeon I saw before coming to him told me there may be complications. Dr. Pilavas told me he did not foresee any complications - and there weren’t any. Everything went smoothly. He called me the night after the surgery and asked me how I was feeling and if I had any questions. I didn’t know what to expect going into the surgery. My biggest concern was how my vision was going to be for both far and near. I am amazed how good my vision is three days after my surgery. I can easily text and read my emails without glasses, and also I can see farther than I ever thought possible. Everything is so clear and crisp. I am so happy with the results and most of all with Dr. Pilavas. He is an amazing ophthalmologist and surgeon. I am recommending him to everyone!

With all the craziness in today's world I am not to sure about going anywhere. Coming here was a pleasure. The ambiance was just right. The old fashioned house (or so I thought), the sun light coming in the windows, the plants and a great knowledgeable doctor. The women working there were so nice also. Dr Pilavas is very kind and the appointment was very helpful; however, I do have to say they definitely overbook their days. I had to be in the office for almost 3 hours. Needless to say they are a great place and I’ll probably be going back anyways

Waited a year for cataract surgery when I went for a second opinion with Dr. Pilavas. The office was not crowded and I was seen promptly by Helena who took measurements with gentleness and kindness. I’ve been seeing Dr. John Pilavas since 10/2017. After all visits during the past four years, I can say that he’s the best doctor I’ve ever seen. He is professional, knowledgeable, attentive, thorough with the examination, and most important, he’s always put his patient first! Here’s a little story can say it all: in 2018, the 3rd day after my cataract surgery, I called his office due to something was bothering my eye, since he would be back to his Astoria office only 4 days later, so I left a message, but out of my surprise he really called me back on the same day after he was off work in somewhere else. So he came back to Astoria reopened his office for me at 7pm and did a thorough exam on my eye till 7:40pm. I was so grateful and always remember the only word he said “ because you are my patient”.

Let’s start with the registration process, which was is very efficient and helpful for busy individuals. The appt was scheduled online, appt was confirmed over the phone. I received a reminder of appt via email, text and a call so appt confirmation/rescheduling/ cancellation was made easy. There was minimal wait time at the office and the experience was different and better than other doctor visits. Dr. Palivas is an excellent doctor! He is patient and thorough. My elderly dad was comfortable and was happy he was able to communicate directly with Dr. Palivas regarding his glaucoma issues. Dr.Palivas explained everything thoroughly and his process kept the flow of patients moving with minimal waiting time. Dr. Palivas is highly recommended!!!

Dr. Pilavas was excellent. First, I took my grandfather to see the doctor, as he hadn't had his eyes checked in a few years. The doctor was thorough, attentive, and had excellent bedside manner with my elderly grandfather. My grandfather left beyond pleased, and after the doctor helped with some issues and also changed his prescription, my grandfather said that he hadn't been able to see that well in years. Based on this rave review, I ended up taking my father a few months later, who had a similar experience. Once again, the exam was thorough, any issues were diagnosed and explained, and the doctor did a great job in handling and remedying the situation. I give this a 5 star review for each visit so far. I would not hesitate to recommend this doctor to a family member or friend in need.

Great Doctor and it's worth the wait because he really sits down and listens to the patients. The waiting place is very quiet so it's honestly both a waiting area and a mediation area. Recommend to get early appointments and if you have appointments after 2-4 just know there might be a chance you could wait a while, 20-40 minutes more or less depends on the day.

I had a 10:45 appointment and was called in a little before my appointment time. The office runs efficiently, yet I never felt rushed. I will definitely return for my annual visit. ***UPDATE**** I have returned for my annual visit. I am just as happy with the office as I was during my initial visit. All my concerns were addressed. The staff is pleasant as well.

I was very satisfied with my cataract surgery and I am now told by my ophthalmologist that my eyesight is 20/20. The procedure and the facility were both great. The only problem I encountered was with billing I received from Basepointe Anesthesiologist in the amount of $2,000 shortly after my surgery.I had previously provided all my insurance information however I still received this bill. The invoice indicated that if the bill was paid promptly that they would accept $1400 as payment in full. I questioned this invoice and was informed it was my responsibility. I paid the $1400 via my credit card. After a while I checked with Medicare and they informed me that the they had paid this participating provider in full and I was not responsible for the bill. I made multiple calls to the billing office of the anesthesiologist with negative results. I finally filed a credit card dispute with my credit card company and received a full refund. The anesthesiologist office eventually agreed that I should not have been billed however they indicated a refund would have to go through a process and may take as long as six months.

Dr. John is professional, efficient, warm and charismatic. He helps solve the problem with ease and takes away any anxieties you may have. With chronic allergies and dry eye, I’ve been constantly going back and forth to the eye doctor. When I moved and found Dr. Pilavas, it was so easy to make an appointment, be seen, get the help needed and be on my way. Sometimes going to a doctor can be a drawn out process- but not with Dr. Pilavas and his office staff. The staff and doctors help you figure out medicines with insurance and different technologies to solve the problem. Cannot state what an all around great experience I’ve been having the last year- and I dread going to any doctor. Run over to Astoria and see Dr. John!

Dr Pilavas is an incredible doctor and surgeon. I was referred to him by Dr Norman Saffra because of his expertise with problems that relate to the cornea. We not only dealt with the original corneal problems but when I asked about corrective laser surgery he walked me through what the process would look like and saw me repeatedly over several months to make sure my eyes were ready for the procedure. My insurance switched in the middle and he even made an exception for that! I had dry eyes so he put me on a regimen of different drops in order to prep my eyes for the surgery. We did the PRK procedure which has a bit longer recovery time than lasik but less complications down the road. It was uncomfortable/painful for around 3 days and it has been fine ever since. My vision went from a prescription of about -7.00 to 20/20 vision in several weeks! I have never seen this clearly since I was a young child. I can now go swimming and do many activities which were more complicated when I could only wear glasses. Dr Pilavas was extremely patient throughout, called me several times after the procedure to make sure I was fine and returned all my calls when I had a question or concern. I am now 5 weeks post op and the only eye drops I’m taking are to deal with dryness which has also been progressively getting better in the past few weeks. In summary— Highly recommended! My deepest gratitude to Dr Pilavas for being so attentive and caring throughout the many months so that everything goes smoothly.

I came to see Dr. John after seeing two other doctors. I had a heavy and painful stye / chalazion for about a month, to the point where I can't ignored it. The two other doctors were good and recommended me some ointments, it helped a little but didn't really help too much. BUT DR John Pilavas is amazing. He did an excellent job diagnosing my pain and right away performed the necessary surgery to drain the chalazion. He also made me feel at ease and comfortable with the entire procedure. DR john is smart, competent, efficient, and generally very nice guy.

Went in with an ulcer in my cornea, as he's a cornea specialist. Actually my 4th or 5th since being in contacts for over twenty years. I mentioned lasik, he had me wait 6 months to heal properly. Very Professional, very thorough. Took time to explain the process of Lasik and PRK. I needed PRK which takes longer to heal. So glad I finally went through with it, and with a cornea specialist. I know others who had a much harder healing process. He had me taking drops prior to and after process, which I believe helped me heal painlessly.
