Excellent staff and service. Very professional and very high tech. Extremely pleased as this is my second visit with this establishment highly recommended. Louise was exceptionally great during the exam.

One of the most important decisions I've made regarding my healthcare was making an appointment with Dr. Tresley. The improvements in my eyesight are immeasurable. Dr. Tresley's assistant, Rebecca, makes each visit what each patient wants, a pleasant and efficient experience.

Are you here because your retina detached like mine did six years ago? Read on to learn why I highly recommend you go with the Chicago Eye Institute over someone else, and Dr. Tresley in particular.
In 2015, I noticed a shadow appearing at the top of my vision. Local optometrist looked in my eye and said, "You need to get to a retina specialist, now." He recommended I see Dr. Tresley. I did. I had surgery, and I'm very happy I got that recommendation. However it was only some weeks after recovering from surgery that I fully realized why. (When you have a detached retina, you don't exactly have a ton of time to do research)
When it comes to fixing detached retinas there are two main surgeries you can perform, a scleral buckle or a vitrectomy. Eye surgery is no fun, but between these two a vitrectomy sounded much cooler to me. They drain the liquid from your eye, replace it with a gas, and then while you recover you can supposedly see the liquid slosh around as it fills back up over several days. The vitrectomy is also the newer of the two surgeries. "Neat!" I thought about the vitrectomy, and I was kinda disappointed to hear that I would be getting the scleral buckle instead. No sloshing around for me.
I'm sure the victrectomy isn't actually "fun" to get either, but I suspect the scleral buckle may be even less fun. It involves sewing a piece of material to the outside of the back of your eye. And they leave it there. Forever!
Yes, you can feel it. It felt like "something was in my eye" for quite a while, and I pretty much hated it.
But here's the thing. IT GOES AWAY. Walking around today for example, I don't feel it *AT ALL*. The feeling really does completely go away, even if it takes weeks. Or was it months? It was a while ago, I can't remember exactly.
More importantly though, if you get a _vitrectomy_, you're very likely to need cataract surgery within two years. It's something crazy like a 2/3 chance of developing cataracts within 2 years. No such risk with a scleral buckle since they don't go inside your eye. For a young person like myself, for the type of retina detachment I had, a scleral buckle was the right choice. (Scleral buckle is also the cheaper of the two surgeries, for whatever that's worth)
But scleral buckle surgery is hard. It requires practice and skill of the physician. These days many younger retina specialists shy away from it and default to vitrectomy for everything. You get a vitrectomy! And you get a vitrectomy! Everybody is getting vitrectomies!!!
If I wound up at some other retina specialist, there's a very, very good chance I'd have cataracts now, but I don't! With the same glasses I had pre-surgery, I have 20/20 vision today. No other complications.
That's why I finally got around to writing this essay of a review. It isn't a knock on vitrectomies, because for what might be a majority of people, that may be the best option. But if your doctor says that's what you should get to fix your detached retina, don't you want it to be because that's what's best for you, and not because they only know how to do the easy one?
So thanks Dr. Tresley!
(And shout out to Rebecca M. Everyone in the office is friendly, but that's the other name I can recall)
