Reviews of Mulate's | The Original Cajun Restaurant
Verlee Gilkerson
Our good friend that lives in New Orleans took us to dinner at one of his favorite Cajun restaurants. The food was fantastic! The live Cajun Band was so good and was just the right entertainment to go with our lunch. The mask band has been lifted at noon today but our wait staff still wore them to insure our safety. Highly recommend this place!
Yuk
The char-grilled oysters are a stable in NOLA. The char-grilled oysters were delicious. Some of the shrimps were a tab overcooked but loved the grilled/crunch flavor at the rims and the seasoning. The fish was a little bit salty. The double cheeseburger was nothing special. Both entrees were small for the price we paid. Service was friendly. We went on a Saturday night and it was pretty empty. There was a band playing which was nice. Overall it was a good try.

Fantastic dinner at Mulate's. Went in with a group and got a variety of foods and all was superb. The cornbread and whipped honey butter are an absolute must. The grilled gator bites as well, simply fantastic and so well seasoned and tender! Catfish and shrimp were perfectly fried, and the Caesar salad was delicious. They had live music going when we came in on Friday night. It was during the Final 4 so it was like a 45 min wait for a table but definitely worth it. Would recommend and would return happily!

Just in town for the weekend and found Mulate’s. Great food. Wasn’t too busy and seated immediately for lunch. The seafood platter and shrimp and grits were great. Nice portions, great taste. We got a little too full before we could nibble on the gumbo, so we took it to go. Staff is really nice and friendly

A short walk from our hotel, this place came recommended. Atmosphere was very laid back, music was great. Tons of seating and clean. Walls adorned with artwork. Great Cajun food as expected. Waiter was attentive and pleasant.

Stopped here for a final meal before going to the airport. The appetizer was cornbread which was quite appealing. My entree was fried seafood platter consisted of catfish and shrimp. I needed one last taste of cajun before leaving town and this spot did not disappoint.

My first time visiting this restaurant and the customer service was amazing from the time I called to see if seats were available to us walking inside and our waiter great great great customer service! I had the Alligator Bites as an appetizer and it was my first time having it grilled and blackened it was yummy and I highly recommend! Our entree wasn’t as good we had the catfish and fries as well as the red fish, mashed potatoes and green beans. Overall we had a great experience and the appetizer was good so I’m rating a 3.5 stars!

Mulate’s is just about 10 minutes walk from the Hilton Riverside. The ambience feels like the old time. We ordered the grilled trio of oysters + shrimps + fish as well as the BBQ shrimp. Food came out hot and tasty … the BBQ shrimp was a little salty expected with the recipe. The wait staff was great. The band came on at 6:30 with “southern Louisiana” style music. We really enjoyed the meal. We are glad to support and understand the difficulty of running a restaurant during the pandemic.

A wonderful experience. The people are great receptive to a guy from Atlanta walking in a New Orleans restaurant with an Atlanta falcons jersey on. Gary our server made such an impression on the ladies that was with me that I would never forget the experience. As I see now the taste of New Orleans doesn't just stop with the food.

This was our restaurant of choice for our first and only night in New Orleans. Absolutely delicious. The frog legs and alligator appetizer special was my absolute favorite. I’m now going to be obsessed and not be able to find anything similar here at home!
The red beans and rice dish was very good as well. Ervin was our server and was great! Very nice experience. Will definitely be back again next time we’re in the area.

Saw the mixed reviews and was a little skeptical, but a Cajun restaurant owner in our hometown recommended this restaurant by name when we mentioned were were visiting New Orleans. We were very impressed by the food and by the attentiveness of the wait staff. Their seafood was delicious, cooked properly and well seasoned — it is amazing to taste the difference in FRESH seafood versus seafood that is shipped to restaurants frozen. I got the char grilled oysters and grilled fish and it was amazing. The butter sauce the oysters were cooked in by far made up for the fact that I prefer raw oysters. More than the seafood though I was BLOWN AWAY by the red beans and rice. I got them as a side and they were by far the best bowl I have eaten in my entire life.

I had a great meal at Mulate's! I'm not an expert on Cajun food but I loved the Catfish Mulate's I had. It was very well seasoned and there was a lot of it!! The band was good. The service was friendly. It was a busy time but we were seated quickly and served within a reasonable time.
AJ T Jr
Large dining room with lively ambiance and excellent Cajun food. Went early for lunch so it was still pretty empty but it got busy quick for lunch.
Indy Eats & Adventures
We arrived a little after 5 pm. I asked about happy hour specials and the waiter told us there were a few drinks on it and the oysters were $4 off but he wasn't sure so he left to confirm. He came back to tell us only beer and sangria were cheaper. I believe it was $2 off. I got the sangria. I enjoyed it.
I was more than excited when I saw that this place offered a GRILLED seafood plate as most only do fried. It came with chargrilled oysters so that made it even better. I asked the waiter in advance how many oysters came with it and asked how big it was because it was $30. He said it was pretty big, so I got it. When it came, it looked like a lunch serving at best or an appetizer. I expected just a few shrimp and oysters but the fish serving wss so small. I was so disappointed. Everything tasted fine and was well seasoned but nothing special. Our waiter was nice but I did feel like our waiter rushed us. After we ate, he asked if we wanted dessert and when we said no, he then asked if the checks together or separate. Although I was still hungry, we just went ahead and got the checks
They did have live zydeco music which was nice but I wouldn't return based on food and drinks. The grilled seafood platter is a great idea but the portion sizes were too small for dinner considering the dinner price.
Mattlan Ladner
If you’re wanting a generic, easy option for cajun food and seafood, this is a considerable option. The prices were a bit higher since it seems like a restaurant made for tourists. If you’re wanting a more authentic New Orleans Cajun food experience, I would probably go somewhere more local and lowkey. However, the food and service was decent. The etouffee was more like a gravy.
Ashley Carselowey
All of it was amazing. Drinks, apps, entrees and dessert were on point. We will be coming back! Our waitress was also very sweet and great!
Joy Stone
Exceptional experience. Rachael was my server and was fabulous! Cajun Cobb Salad was divine. Bread pudding melts in your mouth. Highly recommend!
dean dfw
Still great food, live music, and drinks 10+years after we first discovered it.
Bread pudding is our go to dessert there!
Sasha Black
Every moment of waiting (approximately 15-30 minutes) was worth the experience. Live music and authentic New Orleans cuisine. We had the grilled alligator bites, a shrimp po-boy, and beans & rice + sausage cajun for ~60$ in total.
James C
Very good for casual dining.
Had a dance floor and live band.
I had the catfish, Gator, fried oysters, gumbo and baked oysters.
Leah Kimble
The food at this restaurant was better than my other dinning experiences during my vacation. However, the batter on the fish was a little to salty for my taste. We had the spinach dip & shared the half and half (shrimp, catfish with French fries).
Kyle Drumm
Amazing cajun food in a fun environment. Good music with people dancing and having fun. Had a hard time choosing from the menu, everything sounded good! Everything on my plate was amazing. Will be back next time I'm in town.
The OHalloRANT
Near the convention center. Terrific food, fun atmosphere with live music. Staff was attentive and polite. Affordable and the menu had a lot to offer. The Alligator Bites were fantastic. The Crawfish Pies were delicious. The Pot Roast Fries were addictive. I had 6 of the Char Broiled garlic and butter and cheese ones. I also had the Jambalaya was great. Save room for their Bread Pudding, it's crazy good! Highly recommend this place.
Phil Cross
Good service and good food. A little pricey on the final tab, but that's just because we couldn't resist the appetizers! Our dinner plates were huge servings with just the right kick. Also the music was perfect, loved the style and it wasn't overbearing. Great little dance floor.
David Bilhartz II
Muffalatta was great, also had a sampler of gumbo, etouffe, and red beans, went with server's recommendation on getting the sweet cornbread... Wow it was good! Like a dessert! Barely was able to take a picture before it was all gone!
Ralph Rio
Had the gumbo with potato salad. The server recommended putting the potato salad in the gumbo. Excellent! Also had the southern pecan pie. Don't pass this up! Superb.
Sughey Orozco
The service was great and the food was amazing I got the chicken Alfredo, Caesar salad, bbq shrimp and for dessert pecan pie! It was all delicious and they even had live music 🎻🥁🎶
SDsc0rch “SDsc0rch”
this was recommended to us - now WE recommendation it to YOU!!
sooooo good!
must try the New Orleans style BBQ shrimp
jumbalya was the best I've ever had
cornbread is great too :)
Grant Sande
Very busy with an hour plus wait for 2 people. Great food. Service was ok but they were swamped. Would eat there again. The chargrilled oysters were excellent.
James Nelon
Very good food. Jaclyn was awesome and her suggestions were spot on. Hope the business continues to increase.
Bread pudding was awesome.
Shane Tchen
The legendary reputation of this prestigious restaurant has not gone unnoticed. The best experience was the staff and expediate service. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Our server was patient, efficient, and best of all; just the right amount of sass. Food quality doesn't even need to be mentioned as it speaks for itself in the photographs.
KiKi Chere
First night in New Orleans and we celebrated our anniversary here. Food was good. Kind of pricey. But we enjoyed it.
Benjamin MJ Chan
The Cajun food is great!
Service also great!
My wife and I have a Po-boy and jambalaya
It’s great!
Kevin Shin
A fine establishment that proclaims itself the original Cajun food place. Overall, the dining hall is pleasant enough and the live music is enjoyable, if a touch deafening at points. Food was decent, but not exactly distinct in a city rife with incredible eats. The service staff was great and we had a lovely time, enjoying ourselves so much we closed the place down. Go and appreciate it for what it is and with realistic expectations, I'd bet you'll have a lovely time too.
Sean Myers
This place is a real gem!! Service was really good, they had just opened back up after hurricane Ida. They were completely on point, food was incredible, you've got to give this place a try!!!
Minikkia Johnson
Loved this place. The waitress was so welcoming to us by giving her favorites and they did not disappoint. The food was fresh and Authentic. We had hurricane drinks that was awesome also. We loved the dance floor & watching the customers enjoy themselves. 😉
julie goare
Great local restaurant and I hosted my entire team here (12) - superb service, fun sharable plates and something for everyone (except vegetarians)
Amanda Stanley
The food was amazing! We had blackened alligator bites, the oysters (my first time) and the jumbo fried shrimp. All was delicious!!!! And the drinks are fantastic, u can taste the alcohol, amen. Waitress was helpful and friendly!
Bill Josh
We got here right as they opened. The food was great and the service was excellent. I had the bread pudding for dessert and it was life-changing. I'm sad I probably won't be back this way for quite a while but it's probably for the best because I would go into diabetic coma eating all of that delicious bread pudding. Thank you for making our experience this evening a good one.
R T
Good food. Great service. Calm but fun family vibe. Music tonight was traditional Cajun style.
O2
I went on a Saturday afternoon. Service was extremely slow. It took over 15 minutes for my server to come out and greet. Another 15 to bring water and the wait for my food was absurd. The food was okay but, not worth the wait.
Nick Porzio
Authentic New Orleans culinary stop. Our server was did a great job making us feel welcome. Our Po Boys were delicious. Fresh bread. Perfectly cooked shrimp. Ice cold beer. A perfect lunch!
Rick Feineis
I attended a large dinner party here. They had put the food out Buffet style. The gumbo and cajun alligator were delicious. The brisket was very very tender. The bread pudding was very good as well. I recommend this place.
J.R. Cohen
Unpretentious good food and great place for everyone. The family all loved the char grilled oysters. All the dishes were very good.
David Parker
Great Atmosphere. The food was a little bland. Needed hot sauce.
Marti Garza
Serviceable Cajun/seafood near the Riverwalk outlets and hotels. Despite appearing to be short staffed and dealing with a large dine-in crowd, service was prompt.
Alexandra Mesghina
Food is delicious, the servers are very friendly and accomdating when asking questions about aspects of the menu which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with the items.
Sarah K
Friendly service, live music, large portion meals. Tried the catfish for the first time, delicious!
Robert Bailey
Good food and good, if overwhelmed, service. Music could get loud and hard to talk
Hannah Showalter
Food was good but Grilled portions are small. The music and dance floor are great with kids! The fall special with gator bites and frog legs as an appetizer was very good but you only get two frog legs fyi. Boudin dip was dry and not warm all the way through. Service was good but it did take a while to get the check. We would come back again.
Vic
If you go here you must get the alligator bites, they were SO good. However, all the other food was average and below-average. Was mostly dissapointed after hearing on a city tour how good this place was. It was also extremely expensive for no reason.
They do have a live band with a dance floor and the staff was pleasant.
Christi Davis
We went to hear the live music and try their Cajun classics. Atmosphere was family friendle-anyone welcome to dance! I had the taste of new orleans...surprised at how good the red beans were! Amazing bread pudding! A place that can take you back in time...
Nick Ferguson
A good classic cajun food place. Been going for years and service and food quality is always consistent and tasty.
Brad Lee Brown
Great food, great atmosphere, and great folks. This was my third trip to NOLA in the last 10 months, and I am glad I finally got a chance to enjoy this place. It had been closed or caught them during off-hours during my previous two visits.
Darryl Johnson
This place is good for a casual authentic casual meal. They have a menu that has you tasting all types of Cajun food from around New Orleans. The fried alligator bites were amazing
Amanda Fulfer
Cannot recommend enough!! Delicious food! Huge portions!
Billy Joe Cain
Pulled in because I've been here before with my daughter and I was going to the convention center... Little nostalgia!
The staff was great, the waitress explained the menu and made suggestions. I went with the stuffed shrimp. $28.
There were 4 shrimp. And it came with a side. It was good and I enjoyed it, but wow. That seemed like a lot.
I had a beer and put in a $8.50 tip. It came to almost $50.
I'm poor but on a business trip and I wanted to splurge. I don't think it was worth $50 for the meal, but I think it's because I've been poor too long. I hardly think any meal is worth that much.
But it's MULATE'S!
Ray B
Nice place, waiter was quick and nice to talk with but the food was expensive for what you got. We've sence had the same plates for a fraction of the price. But a plus was that the food came out pretty quickly so not a long wait at all.
Scott Huston
Excellent food and a great experience. I had the little meat pie appetizers and that was a meal in and of itself! The music was outstanding and it was a really nice environment. A total place to go if you are running around NOLA.
Angela Pickens
I hate going into an establishment and dealing with staff that appears to hate their job. The young lady with the short blonde hair wasn't friendly at all. By the time we sat down our waiter.... Joseph came over right away to get our drink order. Joseph was quick, gave honest answers, made sure our glasses were never low. He really made our experience great. I think I enjoyed my cole slaw the most ♥️ the stuffed crab was okay. My mate had a giant salad that had more meat (blackened catfish, grilled shrimp, fried shrimp and sausage) than greens and he DIDN'T MIND AT ALL. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and live band. Would love to come back during my next visit
James McEntire
There are many places in the area to get food. Most of that is overpriced or very rich food based on some interpretation of local cuisine. Mutates is real local food with a great staff and live music. This was definitely my favorite place we ate in New Orleans.
Marc Di Ciccio
Very busy and greasy, loud when there's music, and staff who are very nice but spread thin. Book ahead if you want a table when tourists abound. The food was tasty but very greasy and salty. Not really my jam, but it could be construed for authentic
Kristi Ernst Thompson
Super fun, positive, family-friendly outing. People of all ages including kids enjoyed the zydeco band and dance floor. The crab beignets are a must!
Celeste Bonner
Planned a 40th birthday dinner party for my husband and the staff was so helpful and accommodating. The food was delicious and our server was great; she helped me to surprise my husband with a birthday pie with lit candles. We had a wonderful time.
Greg Blair
The Cajun food was a disappointment. I had the etoufee and the jambalaya. It was bland and unappealing. Which is quite strange considering their professed specialty. This should have been far better. It was edible, but exceedingly mediocre.
Sarah S
Great place for food and drinks. Very easy to accommodate large areas of 15 or more people for dinner or lunch. Just outside of the convention center and walking distance to most convention hotels.
Ryan Tobler
This place has some great seafood! They have lots of good seafood entrees and gator dishes as well. Service is great, restaurant is clean. I am not a fan of the live band. We unfortunately sat by them and the loud music quickly tuened into headache. They play so loud you can barely hear each other speak, but if you're into that then this restaurant is one you should try. I got the grilled seafood platter and I got it blackened. Very, very tasty.
George Murray
I have the chargrilled oysters and the bread pudding and they were the most delicious I have ever ate anywhere. My husband has a cat fish and shrimp blackened and he thought that was delicious as well
Michael Marcus (Marcus 360)
Mulate's was wonderful. Their sampler of Cajun Food was spot on. The staff that worked their was wonderful. The live Cajun music was very enjoyable. I highly recommend Mulate's.
Tonya Myre
We had the appetizer platter for two which came with a wide variety of goodies! The alligator and frog legs were the best I've ever had, the Voodoo Beer was amazing, and the bread pudding with rum sauce was big enough to share with four people but good enough to make you be stingy with it. The waiter was friendly, and attentive. I highly recommend this place!
Tom Mullins
Discovered this dance hall five years ago and it is still the place to go for zydeco dancing and gumbo. . They handled our group of 24 with ease. Will return on our next visit to Nawlins.
Marsha Price
First time at Mulate's; the food was excellent (I was alittle disappointed that they were out of the Oreo dirt cake). I will definitely be coming back on our next visit to NOLA!
Dave Diamond
A colleague and I had dinner here after a day at a trade show. While we expected the food to be New Orleans great we were pleasantly surprised that Not only was the food better than we expected the atmosphere was amazing. After we have been seated and got our meal the music cranked up. Several of the locals got up and started to dance in that New Orleans only fashion. This is a must visit place if you're in this part of town. An absolute Joy.
Jeffrey Peterson
First time to New Orleans. First restaurant we ate in. Was a little worried about the food. Didn’t worry any longer after eating at Mulate’s. Great variety of food and everything looked delicious including the Po’ Boy I got. And definitely save room for dessert because they ALL were incredible!
Tawana Sumbler
Loved the ambiance, we had the alligator bites and their catfish dish that's covered with etouffee, both delicious They have awesome entrees but the sides not so much.
Leon Cole
Good food and atmosphere. Friendly waiters and great service. Loved the bread pudding and whiskey sauce
Brandy Thomas
I had the stuffed shrimp and I enjoyed my food. My friends had the pasta and ribs. My friend wasn't a fan of the ribs. You get a huge portion size but wasn't that good. The drinks were ok.
Ray Boarman
This place was awesome. It had a real Louisiana feel to it. There was live music playing and three kinds of hot sauce on the table. The food was fantastic and our server Cody was great. He was very knowledgeable about the food and gave great suggestions. If your looking for some good Cajun food this is the spot!
April Williams
This place is amazing....... I wasn't sure what to order since this was my first time to New Orleans in a long time. I finally settled on the shrimp po boy. Y'all it was amazing..... the ranch dressing was homemade and very flavorful. The bread the po boy came on was fresh and so soft....... melt in your mouth. I will make sure I come visit this spot every time I come back. I almost forgot to mention the staff....... they were wonderful, friendly, and very helpful. It literally took us 20 minutes to decide what to eat, but our server helped guide us through the entire menu.
Rowena Flores
We went here for lunch during our day at the WWII Museum-- we were sure glad we did! Our waitress was a classic, awesome NOLA native and had great recommendations for food. My brother and I were both craving Etouffée, so he got the crawfish while I got the shrimp--both were delicious! My hubby got their Seafood Platter and my sis-in-law got their Muffulleta. Both were generous servings and super tasty. The star of the meal was their bread pudding. We ordered one to share among us, but it was so good, my hubby ended getting one just for himself! It literally was the best bread pudding we've ever had in NOLA! We can't wait go back!

Creole with Credibility!
Found this place before boarding our cruise ship after Fat Tuesday. Food was out of this world. The holy trinity in New Orleans (see pic). Hot sauce was even better than Crystal. Bought 3 bottles to take home. Joe is the server to ask for, he knows what he's talking about. Don't miss this place. Did I mention the cornbread?
Charles & Tamara Johns
My Lyft driver recommended this place. My overall rating on the food would be ok but in my opinion, it wasn't worth the cost. It is over priced for the amount you get. The live music was pretty cool. What stood out the most was the customer service. My mother was scolded by the man who was trying to seat our party. She was off by 2 people in telling him the size of our group. The guy got so irritated and sarcastic with her. She felt as though she was being reprimanded. If you can't accommodate someone just say you can't do it but berate them like a child. Our experience was not good and I would not recommend this place at all.
William Guzman
Excellent food and service. Thanks to our server, Donna for a great experience.
We enjoyed their gumbo and sampler platter with the aligator, frog, tilapia, and more, and we're absolutely delicious. And their atmosphere during lunch was simply soothing . I can only imagine how pleasant it would be to be during the evenings with live local music.
Highly recommend coming in to taste some authentic cajun cuisine with mouth-watering state and local favorites!
C. JL
Our server April did not really care for us so much. We were not offered drinks automatically. Had to ask and wait to flag her. She was more into serving other parties. Too bad, my husband & I are good tip-ers too! Anyhow, aside from the service this place is okay. Live band was playing and they have a dance floor to whomever would like to dance. Menu selection has variety of choices. The batter for the seafood sampler was just right.
Hubby ordered chicken pasta - pasta was great but chicken was a bit spicy for his liking (We did not include the spiciness of the chicken with our rating). My husband said bathroom was clean. This was recommended by our bus driver who is local.
Susan Thomson
Great food, fun atmosphere. Live zydeco band, dancing and awesome drink menu. Lots of large groups and plenty of room for everyone.

I arrived at this location with my spouse to attend her professional gathering. They started the food selection with creamy spinach and artichoke dip with the salted circular corn chips. The bar featured self serve sweetened iced tea, pink lemonade, and water for everyone to drink. One of the servers, was walking around with chilled shrimp and cocktail sauce on a platter for each of the guests. They would eventually open up the doors to the buffet area where they served fried catfish bites, fried wings, red beans, and white rice, and bread pudding. My spouse did note that they did not serve any type of salad for this event or an alternative to the fried foods for this dinner. The servers worked hard to keep the tables clear of dishes and each one observed were professional in they communication with each of the customers.
Mike Hege
Overall a great authentic Louisiana cajun cuisine! It may take a bit to get seated so allot time for that. The oysters were amazing along with the blackened fish and red beans and rice. I tried a friends grilled alligator and was delicious as well
Kareena Howard
L.O.V.E. Mulates! Few years back we came here and split fried samplers platter ($25) and drank bloody Mary's. I was hooked. 3 years later, we finally made it back, ate and drank the same thing, AAAAMAZING again! Best bloody Mary's, thank you Jeremy! I love the coating they used on the fried platter and I want to mimic for myself at home! Great atmosphere with live music!
Carl Cencig
It was an interesting place dine, to be sure. The food was mostly deep-fried foods, not especially health or appetizing but there was an attempt to have authentic Cajun cuisine available for tourists to try. For example, there were frog legs on the menu. When I visited, there was also live music and dancing which was a nice touch.
The layout of the room is family-style long tables.
Bill B
Delicious food and live music. A great experience! I go here every time I visit New Orleans.
Kaber Esplin
Shrimp in the gravy what a great idea. I loved everything the catfish is just delightful. And I could have eaten a gallon of these potatoes! The service is fast and professional. The atmosphere is fun and you will smile.
Linda Schooling
Very tasty! We were there on a Sunday night. It definitely was not crowded. We enjoyed the live music and if you like to France, this is the place. The service was great and the food was tasty. I had grilled shrimp, twice baked potato and coleslaw. There was about 12 grilled shrimp on the plate... more than enough. Hubby had red beans and rice. He loved it. Their dessert tray looks amazing. We shared a piece of key lime pie...it was great!!!
I'd definitely go again when in town.
Ann Jones
Great food, service was wonderful. My husband had the oysters and was enthralled by the flavor and freshness of the oysters. I had the stuffed shrimp the stuffing was excellent and the shrimp cooked perfectly.
Steve Nash
Outside the quarter and down near the river this place is like a huge old fashion dinning hall with plenty of space and great menu. The wait staff do a excellent job to. Fast and friendly and they make you want to enjoy yourself and come back. Please try the sea good platter with the alligator in it.
Meadow Gobert
This was the 1st restaurant I ate at in '90....still love the dance hall vibe, music and great hospitality! The food is solid real Cajun/Acadian fare. Crawfish pies were my favorite. Going there is like going to your favorite cousin's house.
Abagail Mullikin
Great music and the food is great. I’ve been coming to Mulate’s for years for the bread pudding.
Stacy Howland
Came on a busy Saturday night with a large group and had only a three minute wait while they set up our tables. Our server was super sweet and friendly, our food came promptly, the drinks were delicious, and the band was talented. If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. A fantastic spot for AMAZING Cajun food!
Darrell Dunlap
Crawfish appetizer was delicious as were the stuffed mushrooms totally different than any stuffed mushrooms I have had before. The service is amazing. Very friendly, attentive, helpful. The main meal we had was Cajun Seafood Platter. The stuffed crab was very good as was the catfish which was perfectly seasoned. The shrimp was overcooked and dried out. The fried calamari was rubbery and hard to eat. The fried oysters were delicious.
Gino Canlas
Best place we ate at in NOLA. The place was unassuming but the atmosphere was great and lively. The Catfish Mulate was perfect. I still dream about it.
Anthony Lambruschi
The hunt for jambalaya continues:
Just across the street from the convention center and two blocks from my hotel is this gem. Dinner on a Wednesday was maybe 10% capacity and service was quick, perhaps a bit curt but I'm not here for conversation!
Unlike my first two attempts THIS jambalaya has a variety of color and I can identify peppers, onions, and which type of meat I'm enjoying! The flavor is bright and I can taste individual components of the trinity that give this dish it's depth and heartiness.
While it's quite mild (I make mine with habaneros) it's rather enjoyable. The restaurant has its own house branded version of Texas Pete (I guess) which doesn't add much heat but isn't unpalatable.
With zatarans cooked (and enjoyed) at home being a 5, this Jambalaya is a 7. Definitely better than any iteration I've made from a box and by far the best I've found in NoLa so far.
It's hard to get excited about a salad, but it was made with fresh tasty ingredients, and plated well on a chilled plate 👍
I will definitely be coming back and bringing some friends with me!

The mulate’s fries are amazing. A must try. We also had the muffaletta which was great. Server Ana D was the best. As of recent, servers seem reluctant to be at work, she was upbeat, happy, joyful and most all helpful on making choices. Highly recommend Mulates while in New Orleans
Karen Helsel
We visited at 8:30pm on a Monday and the place was packed. Our party of 2 was seated right away, only to wait over 10 minutes for a waiter to come by for the first time for our drink orders. The Cucumber Collins is very good, by the way. My Zydeco Gumbo and my companion's Catfish PoBoy were both lukewarm at best. The French bread was warm, though, and helped cut the salt in the other dishes. The live zydeco music was very enjoyable but still doesn't justify this food at this price. This is the 3rd time we've been here over the course of the last 20 years. It'll probably be another 6 or 7 before we try again.
Tammy Ehim
My goodness the food was amazing and the staff was great too. U won’t regret going
Douglas Watson
The food was good as always. Gator bites were grilled this time instead of fried. They seemed to have more help than any restaurant I have been in in a very long time.
Dwayne Zimmerman
Exceptional food. Service wasn't as good as some others in the area. Atmosphere was great!
Patrick Donelan
Had alligator tail bites, Cajun seafood plater and bread pudding. Bread pudding was outstanding.
Kevin Anderson
Sampler platter is comically small.
Cute spot. I’m sure the live music is the draw and it’s across from the convention center.
Lowest quality of food I’ve tried in NOLA and ridiculous small portions.
Won’t be back. So many other choices
Chip Stoecker
Started with a cup of gumbo, grilled seafood platter for me, New Orleans style bbq shrimp for my wife good, but the grilled shrimp was off the chart. Finished with their specialty, bread pudding.atchafalaya my d cake for my wife. Can't go wrong with either. All topped off by great friendly service from Jaelyn. Her recommendation s were spot on. Too bad we are just here one night
Von
Excellent! My food was delicious! The food at Mulate's was better than some of the other well known eateries around town. I had the shrimp trip. It consisted of grilled shrimp, fried shrimp, and shrimp au gratin. Excellent choice. I will return!!!
Ego Carry
While I do think the food was good, I don't think the pricing justifies the portions. My group and I didn't go during any live bands or anything, so it was pretty empty. The atmosphere was like a quinceañera that is getting ready to set-up, but there was no party.
Cervantesangelm Texas78
The waitress we had was so nice her name was Julia.. It was a nice place to relax and enjoy dinner.
Dina Rasquinha
I loved everything about this place. The staff and servers were warm and friendly and the food absolutely lovely.
C. Smith-Hughes
We had a great homestyle experience at Mulate's last night. The service was very prompt, kind, and professional. It was a casual dining experience for my wife and I additionally there was a live band on hand that was really an amazing addition to our meal. We ordered appetizers to start but they were a good size so it became our dinner (we had a big lunch 🙂). The appetizers were ordered were delicious. I had the grilled cajun alligator, it was very tender and had great flavor. My wife had fried oysters and we shared a sausage filled with chicken, rice, and spicy sausage. Everything was great. The dessert menu looked tempting but we were full. I definitely recommend Mulate's for people who are looking for a relaxed meal with friends and family.
Arvilla Beckworth
The food is good!! The Cajun sampler I got had a variety of food frog legs, alligator, calamari, shrimp, mushrooms and fish. It was a nice size plate and seasoned well.
David Sircher
Great food, friendly service. Very large restaurant with lots of tables, did not have to wait to be seated. Grilled Cajun seafood platter is delicious👌🏻 …
Deyu Andrei
The food was amazing, we had the grill shrimps. The girl who served us very attentive and kind, was a real pleasure.
sheldon klinger
I loved the food here. The alligators bites and calamari are wonderful. I definitely will be back!
Cheryl Cade
Server was nice. The greens in my salad were limp but the shrimp was delicious.
Rebecca Frost
Jambalaya was amazing. Remoulade was mouthwatering. Bread pudding was as good as advertised. Great atmosphere and music with awesome food.
Rosemary Chapura
Great local authentic Cajun Band for dancing and entertainment. Pretty good food reasonably priced we had great service.
If you're staying in the French Quarter take the riverfront train and it stops right across the street from Mulates.
Robert Horton Jr
Omg!!! Great food and Staff was very inviting. Very relaxing dinning experience.
Geri P
Prawns overcooked, salad came after meal, appetizer was cold and second beverage ordered before the table next to us sat down and received after they received their drinks.
Doug Abernathy
Ok place for Cajun food. Service was poor. Music was ok but not lively. Dinners were average. We've loved this place for years but now it's time to look elsewhere.
Roy Cormier
I always come back here for the gumbo, of course much of the other food is great as well. This place is best done when they have their live bands playing. So go to their website and plan accordingly.
Ying Luo
I went there to try some Cajun food. It’s good they don’t have a long wait compared to some other famous restaurants. The food is good but I wish it’s not just all fried.
Mimi & Pops Smith
Love the atmosphere and most of the food was good. I ordered the steak, medium rare and there was no pink. Not a steak restaurant, I know. Server never asked how it was or spoke to me, so just left it. Appetizers were good and the rest of the group seemed to enjoy theirs.
Kathryn Chandler
Friendly, funny waiter with good suggestions. Food was delicious. Some of the best gumbo I’ve had. We ordered the blackened Catfish Mulate, which was tender with a perfect spice. The bread pudding is a must - 4 of us shared it and all raved.
Ross Jordan
Eat here every time we are in NO. Loce the Zydeco bands. Phenomenal location. Touristy...but still true to NO. Gobenjiy dinner and a little live music.
Jeka P
The good: 1) it’s huge and was the only restaurant that would give us seats without reservations, 2) there was a live band playing which was awesome, 3) the place looks pretty cool.
The meh: the food was a bit dry and uninspiring. I guess Cajun food could be dry but I was expecting a bit more flavor and excitement. If you’re expecting pub food you’re gonna love it, if you’re expecting a treat I would look someplace else.
Michelle Lafleur
One of the must try spots in NOLA. Open late, great atmosphere and traditional food. Catfish with shrimp etouffee, garlic mash and green beans. There was not a crumble left behind.
Devra Brusso (Lashing)
I got the jambalaya and had it other locations. But I like it here the most. It was flavorful. I got a small cup and should have ordered the bigger one!
Paul Petersen
It was a good quintessential Cajun joint. Food was good, service was slow. Live zydeco playing in the dining room. Great selection of local food favorites.
Christina Matson Merrill
Classic Cajun and Creole cuisine with friendly service. The platters are a great way to try many special dishes at once, and are very generous. The blackened alligator appetizer was a highlight of the meal, as was the bread pudding.
Vic “Vic StayFit” Whitehead
Good place to eat and hear live music. Menu has a bit of everything. Was a bit crowded, many tables, for my taste but nice atmosphere.
Matthew Rovelli
This place had really good food, they had some of the best bread pudding. The only thing that really lacked was their service. We had a group of people so we called before hand. They told us to come in and there was no wait. We told them we wanted to make a reservation just encase. They said "no reason to come in no wait" we got there in 10 minutes and there was a 30 minute wait. So we waited for an hour and a half, before we just found enough room at the bar to eat. I will say in the hour and a half wait it took me about 45 minutes to get 1 beer. It was good but service would keep me from going back.
Street Guy
The service and the food were sooooo good!
Place was busy when we walked in, very alive. They also had a live band playing which was cool too. Both mine and my wife dishes were delicious. Looking for authentic New Orleans food, this is a must on the list
Komila Shakhabutdinova
1st restaurant i went to when i arrived to New Orleans and loved everything about it! Amazing food, great customer service and music were wonderful!!! 10 out of 10!
Terri McCulloch
I've been to Mulate's on several trips. I love the ambience, music and food. This time, I had the seafood pasta. Good, but a tad salty. Lots of seafood in the dish though. The spicy Bloody Mary and key lime pie were yummo!
Stephanie Herrera
The grilled chicken pasta is sooooo good here!!! I enjoy going to this place. It was busy but not crazy busy and there was live music playing and people dancing. Definitely a great place to have a meal! Oh and my friend got the fried shrimp platter and that was delicious too!!
Anca G.
Interesting restaurant and great food. The service was a little slow and the prices a little high, but the music and the food compensated for it. I would recommend it.
Tee Bee
Food was phenomenal! Try the fried gator! Dessert is delicious! Clean restaurant, friendly staff and great service.
Paul Barnes
Mulate's is dedicated to the preservation of tradition Cajun food, music, and dancing, and they do an excellent job. This is the one place I make sure I go when I'm in NOLA.
I usually get the gumbo or the red beans and rice and I've never been disappointed. The music is always great and there is a big dance floor.
The service is always quick and efficient. The prices are reasonable, and there is a nice selection of beer. Do yourself a favor and go and enjoy.
Souvik Bhattacharjee
Decent place with good food. Had Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo. The portions could have been more fore the price. Also, had to wait for some time before we got seated, even though the place was almost empty.
Laura Restrepo
We kind of just run into the restaurant but the food was amazing! It is traditional Cajun food, the menu had a lot of variety, and the food was amazing! The service was really good. We had someone who is vegetarian, someone who doesn't eat seafood, and someone who loves seafood. There were options for everything.
Amy Wascher
Food was delicious. Staff was so friendly. There was a live band at dinner time.
Kirsten Wesselow
Our server was so sweet and the crab beignets they had on special were to die for. Loved the live music too!
Antonio Stewart (Tony)
Had the zydeco gumbo, seafood gumbo and Mardi gras shrimp.... Everything was great, well seasoned the French bread they give as a app was good as well. It's a very vibrant location.
Cody Calhoun
I really do love this place. The food is great and the service is good. Love the dance floor and the live music is a blast. I love Cajun food and their food is great. Service staff was so sweet to my kids, too.
The only issue is the price for kids. My four year old’s hamburger (plain) with fries was $12! If you have kids, be aware that kids food is expensive.
Great place though!!!
Amiee SAUBLE
Had the most awesome service atmosphere was phenomenal live band food was just okay I've had better overall it was great fun!
Jennifer Schulte
The wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the food selection. It was delicious food and the atmosphere was superb.
T Leavelle
Food was delicious, service was fast, and the music was a added bonus. It's a nice environment very roomy. It would be a great place for gatherings. We had a wonderful time. We will return.
Camille S
Delicious Cajun food, exactly what we were looking for. Creamy, hearty and full of soul. The restaurant itself is neat it has a ton of original paintings from Louisiana artist George Rodrigue. Definitely go here to taste some Cajun cuisine.
Jimmy Cho
Food is good. Not saying anything wrong either this place. Had Shrimp and grits
Warren Vanbramer
Definitely the best food in the area, we're frequent visitors of new Orleans, and by far they have the best food, the server was the best! My daughter likes Mayo and ketchup mixed together for catfish (I got her hooked on that lol) they didn't have Mayo available for customers but the server made it happen, I'm so glad we tried this place out. Sorry there's no pictures, I ate the food that fast!
lisa h
My daughter had her wedding reception here. The room was an awesome venue. Plenty of room for us to be comfortable and still plenty of room for the dance floor. The bartenders were awesome and the food was fantastic. Everybody raved about the food. My only disappointment all night was that I did not go back for the bread pudding. But of course, that's on me. I simply got carried away with the festivities. So next time in nola, I will definitely be going back. Thank you Mulate's for a fantastic evening!
Andrew Boddie
Really great spot. We came at a slow time. Would love to come when the music is playing and the atmosphere is at it's peak.
Doug Williams
The food was great. Our server Kelly J. is the best. We enjoyed the band.
Pierre Suranto
Friendly service, ambience was ok, my jambalaya was good, feedback from the rest was their seafood was okay, thus 3 stars, although the turtle cheesecake was 🔥🔥🔥 …
Abby Estwick
First, consider getting there early if you aren't interested in the music and dancing. If you are going in the evening, there will be a line out the door and you can expect music, dancing and you can participate if you'd like. Our server greeted us promptly and when I didn't care for my meal it was replaced with a delicious blackened chicken Alfredo. The bread pudding was to die for and had a very generous helping. I'd visit again if only for the bread pudding! Bottom line? I'd make a stop there if I were visiting new Orleans.
Lynn Johnson
My 90 year old dad wanted Cajun and this was within walking distance of the hotel for him. He liked it and the music. He is easy to satisfy LOL.
Christina Hamilton
Food was good, but our server was outstanding, definitely one of the best I've ever had, wish I could recall her name We were too early for music, but I'd love to try it out next time. Nice that is sort of away from the French quarter nonsense, too.
Mensielito Teofisto
If you're into deep fried stuff, this is the place for you. I am giving this resto 4 stars only because my friends enjoyed the Mulate's seafoods platter - everything was deep fried. They also enjoyed the deep fried alligator meat for appetizer 😏. …
jeremiah kincaid
Atmosphere was busy. Lots to take in if it's your first time there. Service was a bit slow. I had the Virgin Island Painkiller, strong but very delicious. I ordered some Gumbo and grilled alligator for my main course. The gumbo was good, but not $10.50 per cup good. My grilled alligator was chewy. Slightly overcooked. Seasoning on it was very good though. Be prepared to spend some money. $100+ for 3 people and thats without appetizers and dessert.
Autumn Currence
Yummy! Stopped for lunch and was very excited to get a slightly smaller portion of etoufee. The fresh bread was delicious!
JP Meijers
Good food and not too busy
Lori Davis
Excellent place to experience amazing Cajun food. The atmosphere is great especially when it's not totally packed. Live Zydeco and an ample dance floor seems to always have a dad dancing with a little babe in his arm and a couple two stepping to the music. I recommend the crawfish bread appetizer, stuffed shrimp and anything you dip in Remoulade sauce!
Shea Pennington
So glad we went!! Oysters, etouffee, stuffed shrimp, drinks.. . Ugh. Everything was delicious! Ambiance was everything you want from New Orleans... live music, atmosphere...Mulate's is a MUST!
Chris Parker
Fairly good food, service and atmosphere. The grilled alligator tasted like chicken. Having it before I know it shouldn't. The price was a little steep but is expected for the location. Pictured is the grilled alligator, shrimp alfredo, seafood platter and ribs. Be aware that there is very little options for those with shellfish allergy.
Zackary Conte
The service there was amazing, the waiter we got was making jokes with us and giving advice on some great spots in New Orleans. The cornbread was moist, fluffy, and had a nice crust around it which made it delicious! I had gotten the French Muffuletta and personally wasn’t the dish for me, but I could still recognize how well it was prepared. To top everything off they had live music and some of the customers were even joining in on the dance floor!
HollyMarie IsMe
Really lovely restaurant featuring a nightly live Cajun band. Food was excellent as was the service. You have got to save room for their signature bread pudding. It's amazing!!!!
Scott Stewart
Just had a private party for about 130 from a high school band. They were great! Food was yummy, service was on-it and the facility is really just what you'd want for a fun casual place. Highly recommend for a party or event.
Mike
A local recommended this place for cajun food. We are glad we ate here. It was excellent. The live cajun band didn't start until 7. I ordered the blackened chicken pasta and it was awesome. Everyone else was extremely happy with their food. We splurged on dessert- cheesecake with ice cream... mmmm. This place is overpriced. That's the only reason they didn't get 5 stars
Justin Almeida
Yes it's in the middle of everything. Yes a lot of tourists come here. But boy do they have the real deal! Frog legs, alligator, gumbo and hot sauce... Local beers and great music. I am really glad a stopped by for lunch. With every penny!
Ms. Jones
First time eating gator and it tasted delicious! It was seasoned perfectly tasted like porkchops. The sides offered were only a small portion of mashed potatoes and the green beans which were basic made. I had the stuff red snapper which was good and a nice size portion. Pecan pie with whole pecans on top; I got mines with vanilla ice cream. Atmosphere was nice with love cajun music. I will return.
Lia Alfonso
Loved the alligator bites, gumbo, boudin sausage links, and red beans!
Greg Sullivan
Delicious food, great ambience. The Shrimp Étouffée is phenomenal!
Amanda Herbener
The food was great and the only reason i gave 4 star's is i feel it was over priced. The service was good but parking was tricky. The gator bits were really good.
Chris Murphy
Live south Louisiana music on a Sunday afternoon, cold beer and friendly staff made for a great time that couldn't be overshadowed by muffaletta inspired calamari, or what I would call real bad food. Everything else we had was spot on! I'd go back, but not for that spin on calamari!
Brett Jones
The food is amazing. I could move here and die fat and happy. Cocktails were fantastic.
cktrinidad
For anyone who has never had alligator, it will be your favorite new snack! Shrimp etouffee is enjoyable as well but don't be surprised by the Big Easy prices!
Kym Jenkins
Super tasty, great drinks and lots of fun with live music.
Aharon Williams
Shalom Those Rolls With Tha Powder Sugar Over Them Is Tha Bomb! When I Come Back In Town I'm Going There Off Tha Rip!
Paul Teske
Great food,
Closed from 2-4
Had non-seafood dishes for me daughter
R DL Reyes
Not too busy Easter evening dinner. Nice ambiance. Prices are on the high side though.
Nathan Stuckey
Went here for lunch. I got the Mardi gras shrimp salad which was $20 but also HUGE so I think you get your money's worth. The dressing was honey Dijon and it tasted great, and the shrimp was tossed in a mild hot sauce/remoulade and was tasty without too much heat. Service was prompt (though it isn't very busy for lunch) and attentive to beverages. The selection for beer was above average with several local brews, especially Abita which has a good variety of beers. The other customers seemed happy with their food as well. It is very conveniently located near the conference centers. Highly recommend!
Stacey Richard
Delicious and authentic! I can't eat seafood OR pork and I was able to find something delicious on the menu!!
Amazing service!
Kari Chamberlain Miller
GET THE BREAD PUDDING!! Such a fun atmosphere, great place to take Littles. They can draw on the table and have a kid's menu.
Bruce Marcia
friendly and attentive staff, great cajun music and was told they play from 6 to 8pm. Lots of seafood choices. Is more of a family restaurant.
Story Time
Delicious food! Many options for my food allergies and preferences. I love their meat free red beans and rice. The veggie pasta is delicious and gluten and meat free!!!
Kry Stal
Food was amazing! Four stars because service wasn't the greatest.
Jeff F.
Walking distance from my hotel, food was amazing and our waitress ( April)was the best.
Philip Latiolais
The service was great. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The food was mediocre at best. It was a far cry from the Mulate's I remember.
Jessica Baker
Best place I ate while in New Orleans. You have to try the fried alligator. We went around 1pm it wasn't busy at all. Quick service. I had th blackened chicken pasta. For dessert you have to try the caramel cheesecake. Dont pass this place up!
T Kruchas
music was great, food was ok. Hamburger tasted a little like fish, service was slow but we had a good time
Daryl Nitz
Excellent venue with great music, food, and drinks. Better than most creole Southern places in The Quarter.
Brian Goad
Good gumbo, okay house salad. The pho-boy looks great. Very good local restaurant that does a good job with Cajun food. However I would call it amazing.
William Shoebrook
Staff was very friendly but I was not overly impressed with the food. I tried it once. That was enough for me.
Amanda
I was here with my daughter's high school choir & band group (approx.120 Huhuhpeople total) over spring break!😄😁👍👍👍
It was AMAZING!!!
The staff was well prepared & organized for our group's size!
Definitely had plenty of food prepared for us and a wide variety of non-alcoholic drinks for the group also!
The Live Jazz band . . . ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!
They played all sorts of fun songs to get up and dance to and was enjoyed by all attending; Adults and kids alike!!!👍😄😁
Ninad Bhagwat
The food tasted good, and the waitress was attentive. But she did not tell me grilled and blackened fish platter would cost more than normal fish platter. Also, quantity of food was not worth the price tag for the platter. I was still hungry even after eating a whole platter myself. Overall the place was ok, but I will mostly not return.
Alison Lang-Hickey
A highlight of our trip...our group from age 15-60 all enjoyed the food and even ended up dancing because the music was so fun.
Austin Jassman
The best cajun food! I recommend the
Catfish Mulates! Desserts are pretty sweet but delicious.
Just A Guy
Food was ok but don’t come here if you are in a rush. This place is slooooowwwwwww and understaffed.
Phillip Ranglin
Wow, y’all. Like, really.
Beautiful ambience, friendly, personable staff and just an all around friendly spot. The jambalaya is incredible and the cornbread will make you slap your entire maternal germ line.
There are some mixed reviews about this place but the the food is AMAZING- you should eat here.
Marissa Hayek
service and every single meal from jambalaya to gumbo to catfish mulate absolutely delicious!
Brianna Richardson
Took a while to get greeted. People walking up after us were greeted first although the server walked past us a few time. Fried seafood was good. Old fashioned was disgusting. They add in tip automatically even though we only ordered three items.
scott wilson
I will go out of my way to get to Mulate's, and with the road work going on right outside, it was harder to get to than normal. WELL WORTH the small hassle. Best Bloody Mary in the world, ever. I have been many times, yet have only tried 2 items. I would think I have had bites from other people's plates I'm dining with but, no one offers and there's never any leftovers
Bethany Tozier
This was our first trip to NOLA. The food here was excellent, the service was personable and caring. Thanks for making our first night and first meal here memorable.
breakfast with G
Great food, drinks and service. Seemed a little pricey until the food arrived at the table. Well worth the price with large portions and great taste.
Lily V
Ther place was Ok, I was actually expecting a little fancier place after I saw their prices on line. The food was good but I was definitely not impressed, the service was ok, again nothing special but nothing bad. They did have a band that started playing I believe at 7 pm and some people danced. It was nice but overall I was expecting a little more for the pricess they charge.
Olivia Covarrubias
Mulate's had great food, which I would describe more as comfort food, and it was delish! I ordered the Shrimp Platter that was super tasty and I could not finish it. The french fries are great and I couldn't stop eating them. Above all, my favorite thing was the Virgin Island Painkiller made with pineapple juice, orange juice & coconut cream topped with Pusser’s BVI Royal Navy Rum & dusted with fresh nutmeg. I could have kept drinking those all night, but my hubby stopped me! There's also great Zydeco bands that play throughtout the afternoon and evening. This is definite "do not miss" place to eat in NOLA.
Kimberly Ball
Great food and a hard-working wait staff. I had the Jumbalaya *yum". Close walk to the outlet shops on the river.
Yiran Gong
catfish 🤌
gumbo yuck …
janie fuller
The gumbo was as good as my maw-maw's was! And the music is FANTASTIC! Ask for JOSH! He was polite, attentive, and well mannered! The marks of a TRUE Southern Gentleman!
Don
They just opened back up and are still trying to get everything together. I went back to my favorite thing on their menu, grilled chicken Alfredo. It was great like always. Service was excellent even though they are short staffed. Food was great. Bread pudding was amazing also. Welcome back!
Pierre Wube
I love this restaurant. From the food to the drinks, it's an authentic NOLA experience. I had the stuffed shrimp platter, my friend the blackened catfish. Both were incredibly delicious. We washed it all down with possibly the best hurricane I've ever tasted.
Bryan Tran
Came here before on my previous trip, and the food and people was just as good as it was three years ago.
Lynn Palumbo
Great atmosphere, service and food! Exceptional grilled oysters!
Carol Boynton
Food and service excellent! Great drinks
Christopher A
Food here is good, the atmosphere is grand with a large dinning area. If you are in the area of the warehouse district it's definitely one of the better restaurants.
Jamie Johnson
Had drinks and the cheese queso Appetizer. It was so good! Mojito was good. Not very busy but we got there when it opened. Check the hours before going
Flawless Ross
Drinks are really good.ordered a hurricane. .Band was good.. I would come to restaurant every time I visit New Orleans... But the menu has changed and took my favorite Mardi Gras shrimp off the menu... Service was good but I am not to thrilled this visit
Mike McCormick
This is a good, basic restaurant. Nothing fancy food wise. If you like Cajun food, this is your restaurant. It is a good sized place. Never had trouble getting in here over the years. They have live entertainment in the evenings. I try to come to this place whenever we come to NOLA.
Saresa Brooks
New Orleans food was delicious. Lots of seating. Family style and live vand.
Abby Daws
This place was pretty good. Not giving a full 5 stars because nothing stood out to me. The food was good but nothing special and the service was just ok. It’s a good spot for a quick bite but I wouldn’t go out of your way to come here.
muklan1
This was our first stop in New Orleans, and it is EXACTLY the food you would hope to eat there.
Grace Ro
Delicious food and great atmosphere! I recommend the Jambalaya and the Crawfish bread!
Dave Clark
This was the first time I had ever had gumbo, and it wasn't that flavorful. However, I put some of the pepper sauce on it, and it tasted much better. The rest of the food was great.
Derrick Parker
My favorite place in New orleans. Got there 3 min past closing and kitchen was closed. Disappointed cause I know they could've did me good but I guess that is how it goes. Food was good but no red fish sad day
Eric Short
Absolutely great food. The BBQ shrimp was outstanding!! All 5 of us loved our meals. Bread pudding was on point and we ordered another.
Nathan Biggerstaff
The staff was amazing. Had 33 high school students who loved the food, the service, and the dancing!
Andrew R
What to say about Mulate's... The atmosphere was excellent. They have live music, friendly staff, delicious food, and perfect drinks. Couldnt have asked for a better evening. Looking forward to my next visit to New Orleans and for an evening at Mulate's again.
Silver Love
The food was fantastic and the atmosphere so welcoming!
Danny Maldonado
A really nice restaurant in New Orleans near the convention center. It serves some authentic NOLA food.
Shawanda Harris
I ordered the seafood pasta. It was delicious and full of seafood. The meat pie appetizers were good also. It's a little pricey.
Katie Adams
Ordered the BBQ shrimp which was delicious. I was disappointed when they said they didn't take debit or credit/debit and I would have use thier ATM which has a 4 or 5 dollar surcharge.
Kayla Lister
Amazing place to sit and eat! Great atmosphere, great service, and PERFECT food! I highly recommend this as a go-to when visiting!!
Jo Ellen Atkins
Have been going to Mulates over 15 years.. always a great experience for family with children. Was very disappointed this last visit. No childrens menu😂was told we could order a 19.00 chicken tenders meal for a 4 yo. Also ordered chicken and sausage gumbo when it arrived it was seafood gumbo and told that was what the cook prepared. Could have been dangerous if customer had allergies. Please Mulates review menu.. Childrens menu is a simple fix.
OG Twin Sister TV
We LOVE this restaurant!! The food was amazing! The band was awesome! We had so much fun as a family of 4 with 8 yr old twin girls. Everything we ordered was delicious and we had the best time on the dance floor. Our waitress was attentive and the food was prompt. This will be the first place that we eat at next time we visit.
John Wski
So the food was good the portion size was a bit lacking. I paid $23 for the grilled seafood platter which consisted of four grilled oysters five grilled shrimp and a catfish fillet with loaded mashed potatoes and coleslaw as the side. I'm from out of town and I would be expected to pay these prices for quality seafood in Oklahoma not right next to the source of the seafood. The service was okay I wouldn't say great. All in all we enjoyed our meal.
Trinda Stokes
The Guy Branden that dropped the food off is Awesome! Will definitely return.
Thomas Crawford
Mulate's is a MUST ! One of the best. casual dining, great food selection, traditional music. Great overall experience!
Sharon Spence
Wonderful zydeco music, faaaabulous grilled alligator and original George Rodrigue blue dog paintings. Picture me happy!
John Gately
Best Jambalaya I have had here in New Orleans. Big servings and fast!
Todd Godfrey
Cornbread was wonderful
Tried Frog legs they were good - not alone on the menu we asked if possible to get just on a side
Cold inside which would be ok but really cold outside
Waiter not too attentive. Had spicy food and no water refills 😔 finally found someone to ask
Got BBQ shrimp in a gravy type sauce it was ok green beans w bacon good after adding salt mashed potatoes bland
Shrimp pasta super spicy shrimp sauce on pasta garlic maybe with an oil
Chelsea Tyus
Tight seating, decent food, good drinks, a bit pricey
Andrew Schatzberg
It was the whole experience. Live zydeco music, delicious Nola fare (the red beans and rice, jambalaya, and cornbread were outstanding) and our server, Rachel, took excellent care of us.
Jamie Guidry
The cocktails and desserts, especially the bread pudding, were delicious. The dinner entrées were very small portioned and over priced. Even though they were not busy, we felt like we were being rushed.
Avoid the jambalaya— it tastes exactly like the Zatarains box mix.
Vince Smith
Holy cow this place is great!
Katelynn Floyd
Amazing service, awesome food
Claudia
Food was average, gumbo lacked a robust flavor that would be expected of a #1 rated plate. Ambience was on point. Value was not there.
T Mac
Hands down some of the best charbroil oysters. Tasty hot n cheesy spinach artichoke dip n chips. Bread pudding topped off the meal. So good with the rumsauce.
Karla Moran
Food was good so was the customer service. Will definitely go back
tony mancuso
Great music great service great food nice cocktails too. Wooooooo
Clef of Cividale
The food was good and the server was excellent. We would come here again. I don't know if my expectation of Cajun food was off target or not. The spice of the gumbo and jambalaya was lacking. I was expecting more. Not bad, just wasn't what I was expecting.
Raymond Christy
Great service, pricey but the tastebuds will direct my feet there, again!
John Sirizzotti
Great service. Food was delicious. Order the crab cake. It's a little pricey but well worth it if you like crab
Chip Gentry
Great selection of specialty drinks and true Cajun cuisine witg live music
Across from tge Convention Center
Brett Stephens
I had the jambalaya. It was very flavorful and their hot sauce was a good addition. The bowl is a huge serving.
Rhonda Pagano
The food is amazing! Great customer service. A great experience.
Allison Cruise
Quickly seated and served. Our waitress was really friendly and everything was yummy. I had the slow roasted chuck po boy. Would return!
Richard Brown
Our waitress was so nice and attentive. The food was excellent! The location is just outside the NO convention center.
Chip Lechner
Service was terrible. Food was great when we finally all got served. Half the table was finished eating before the rest were served.
Priscilla Collister
I thought it was a little pricey for the good but it was good. Just not exceptional
Luis Ruiz
The dinner was great. The long lines wasn't. Live band and music was great.
vick yao
Simple family fare goes well with the live music, recommend the seafood gumbo.
Curtis M
Very small portions. Food tasted good.
Chris grimm
They just hosted our reception and the service and food was exceptional. We can’t thank Chantelle enough. She went out of her way to make sure everything was perfect.
Whitney Bengson
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. I had the shrimp poboy and it was delicious. Very family friendly and great for kids.
Bronce Perez Matos
If you want good Cajun food and music then go no further. I highly suggest having the grilled alligator but blackened.
Marie Champion-Sonnier
Always a pleasure! My husband and I never miss Mulate's when we hit New Orleans. The food is amazing and the music is always fun!
E Gib
Always our first restaurant stop when we visit NOLA. Fabulous food and atmosphere. Live zydeco music starts at 6:30, happy hour between 4 and 6. Their bread pudding is very good!
Joseph Duffrin
So awesome. Would definitely go again. I really appreciated the environment and especially the food. The space was very nice and the food was even better. 10/10 recommend.
Kaley Ward
Great food & service.. Very popular restaurant, so be ready for about an hour wait (well with the wait though)!
C D Peacock
Oysters were delicious. Wife got Cajun BBQ shrimp which were incredible. And the live music was great.
Kristen Barker
We visited New Orleans for four days and ate here twice. Order the chocolate cake. You'll be glad you did.
Jay Daniel
Couldve been better. Food wasnt that bad.
Beryl Flateau
Calamari was cold second order was overcooked. Grilled oysters were excellent as well as the fried seafood platter.
Willie Taft
Clean and pleasant atmosphere. The service was on point and our server checked our table at just the right times. Her recommendations were good and the food was great. For a first timer, I hope to be able to come back to New Orleans. If you're visiting, I highly recommend dining here.
Pat Britt
Wonderful local cajun music restaurant. Large food portions.
J Garcia
Service and atmosphere were great. Our server was extremely attentive and friendly. Live music and huge portions of food! The fried and grilled shrimp were very good and all the food tasted fresh. The plate I got was huge and well worth the price. Some of the plates were over priced, but food was definitely good.
Lauren Walker
I didn't really care much for the food and I was turned off but the old grease smell in the air. That being said the stuffed mushrooms were good and so was the grilled alligator. I didn't care for the fried alligator. The wait staff was colorful. I enjoyed my time my husband loved it.
Joseph Phillip Lister
It may not be smack dab in the middle of the French Quarter, but this multiple award-winning Cajun joint is well worth your time!
Eric Hansell
Delicious food! Alligator bites were awesome, and the catfish is a must!! Little disappointed they were out of Woodford bourbon, but probably just a blessing in disguise. Highly recommend!
Jennifer Ruiz
Great food, and the live music was nice.
Lara H
Great cajun food and music. Highly recommended.
Tanisha A.
From the time we walked in until the time we were leaving the service was a plus 10 and then some. It was a group of us visiting from SC and the waiter was amazing. My friend guy ordered wings and they accidentally took too long because they burned them, but the chef made sure to let the waiter know to offer his/her apologies and offered a free desert. His wings still took forever they gave them to him for free with a free desert. They did not have to do that but it was so generous. I definitely recommend this place and will be visiting again. Now 2 things I recommend ... 1. melted butter and 2. More food on the seafood platter for the cost. If you order it the calamari is the BEST !!! Also, make sure you get it grilled instead of fried. If you have a strong palate tell them not to season your catfish. I highly recommend this place.
Danny Clark
Great atmosphere. Bread Pudding was awesome. Zydeco music!
Eddie Mack
My family held a dinner event here and booked one of the private rooms. The room was beautifully decorated and very clean, and came with audio setup and a dedicated set of restrooms. Service was kind and fast, we did not need to wait on them for anything. And of course the food was very good. They took great care of us, and I highly recommend Mulate's for any group dining event.
Pauline Lane
Great food friendly service well worth a visit
Kimberly Mayes
Never disappoints!! I love the food, the music and the service! !
Joy DesAnges
Very nice, healthy size servings, good fresh flavors. Waitstaff superb. Everything exceeded expectations!
Mike Santos
Alligator plate... it's that tasty that I will go once and again..... great service and nice and comfortable place!
Daniel G
Live music. Great food. Heads up cheapest platter is $18. Service was great and food came out pretty quickly.
Wendie Buttars
We were told it would be 30 minute wait and it ended up taking 90 minutes to get seated. We were there over 3 hours for a quick dinner and glass of wine.
Michael Sokalski
Great but not perfect. I ordered the blackened cajun seafood platter; I would have preferred it have more shrimp and fish, the star of the entree IMO, instead of the fried oysters and calamari. The beers on draft are few but good.
Our server, Julia, was excellent. Our after-dinner coffee was great. The bread pudding is the best bread pudding we've ever had.
Tammy Fanguy
Had a wonderful dinner! Akinthia and Kevontae were amazing. Their recommendations from the menu were over the top! The band was awesome! Would highly recommend!
Stacey Bubis
New orleans menu for sure! Staff is friendly and helpful with choices. Very clean and yummy food 😋
tracy bench
Authentic Cajun food, Music after 7pm.
I highly recommend this restaurant!
Suzy Ries
My travel mate and I were visiting and asked our hotel staff where to get an authentic NOLA meal. They suggested Mulate and what a treat. Wonderful atmosphere, fantastic food and live zyedgo music!
Rochelle Pereira
Love love love the place. What a great ambience and such lovely Irish music in NO.
One of the guys kept the crowd entertained by engaging kids n adults alike to play musical instruments and to dance.
The food is good. The large seafood appetizer platter was difficult to finish for 4 adults.
Had an awesome time. Will definitely be back n highly recommend.
Roland O'Daniel
It is a nice Nola restaurant. We went with another couple and enjoyed the music! We had some beers and old fashions. Very nice. The waitress was very nice and attentive.
We started with the smoked oysters and they were spectacular. The sauce was buttery and smoky. Just delicious.
My wife and I split the burger and it was amazing. It had flavorful mushrooms, cheese, and gravy. Our friends had the oyster po' boy and blackened red fish. They were very pleased! Good food, great music, and nice service
Grant Sumpter
Tourists place food was good, live music was fantastic. The person who waited on my table great as well.
Charles Whitaker
Food was excellent. Service was good. It seemed the wait staff had more area than they could keep up with, but they were super friendly and helpful. Tables are too close together and it's like a maze to get around. Atmosphere is a little on the loud side, but not too loud to carry on a conversation with your table mates.
Richard M. Hearn
Fun setting with great food and great music. My kids have even played with the band before. I had the seafood platter this last time...and probably any other time I've been there. Our group had no complaints about the food or service. We'll definitely go back anytime we are in New Orleans.
Junwei Teng
This restaurant is close to where we stayed. We gave it a try it was great. The waiter we did not know the name he was very attentive. We ordered a grill platter and a seafood Gumbo they were all great! Small size Gumbo is good enough. The live music show was very nice and. Number of old couples went dancing. It was cheerful. If we visit back NOLA will come back here again!
Ashley Porter
This was our favorite place we ate at while there! The food was AMAZING! Hands down the best stuffed crabs we had ever had! Drinks were delicious and well made. We wished the band would have played a little more, but what we did hear was really good!
Stephanie Garcia
Delicious! Jambalaya and fish of the day (snapper) were amazing! My kids had the burger and chicken sandwich and they ate almost all of them.
Chris Andrews
Server was great. Red beans needed more flavor. Nice atmosphere for a convention lunch.
Donna Smargiassi
This is one of the best! The fried gulf shrimp and Taste of NOLA were delicious! Every time I am in New Orleans, Mulate's is where I head!
Michael Chen
I had a great time here, and the live band was great. Food was great also, I just didn’t think it was five stars great. Service is really friendly also, and we didn’t have to wait a long time. Also, there are so many restaurants with similar menus so I didn’t think this place was super special. I got my first taste of alligator and yeah, it really did taste like chicken, haha.
Would I come back? Most definitely.
Would I recommend it? Yes!
Don’t get me wrong though, we didn’t experience anything negative. But like I said, everything was great, just didn’t think it was five star great.
Jay Nicholson
Don't let the prices on the menu fool you, you will enjoy this place. The portions are plentiful, so again, don't be discouraged by the prices. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was fantastic. About the only problem was that the waitress seemed to have an attitude when we took a little long to decide what we wanted. Being a "touristy" kinda place, where I'm positive taking a few minutes to decide is commonplace, you'd think the staff would be used to that. Either way, Mulate's is definitely worth the stop.
Nicholas Lamb
Not too bad, service was good. However their prices are 40% higher than is listed on the Google menu tab and that left a bad taste in my mouth, pun intended. Prices might be worth it for dinner with the live music, etc. considering the location. But for lunch it was pretty outrageous considering the quality of the food, which did seem to be a step above cafeteria- and pretty on par with your average buffet.
Bottom line, if your boss is paying, go for it. If it’s your nickel, look elsewhere.
Wendy Martinez
Had the Jambalaya. It was very good and worth the price. Atmosphere was great, as was the service.
Greg Goomrigian
Fantastic! Staff accommodating my large group in short notice. Food delicious with decent portions. Menu appeals to everyone! Nice atmosphere and live music
Shay Davis
My husband and I decided to try this restaurant on or first trip to New Orleans. It isn't pretty on the outside but the inside is nice. The prices are average for this area. The food was good but you don't get a huge helping. The mud cake is delicious. The style of the food reminded us of a home cooked meal, not really fancy but tastes good.
Sheela Campbell
Always wonderful options for Cajun food and lively music.
Willie Carver
Great food and nice service. We didn't get our food immediately after sitting down (something other commentators are complaining about)--but who wants to be rushed? This isn't fast food! Talk to your companions :)
Blackened shrimp Po boy was nice, jambalaya was VERY good, and the raisin bread pudding was among the best I've ever had. Will definitely come again :)
Rudy Ramirez
Very lively restaurant and great food. Went to dinner here and ordered the fried gator, which was really good. It was busy here and we surprisingly got sat down really quickly. There was a live band playing on stage which was really fun. People were eating and dancing, having a good time.
MvGun
Prices were high but the food was good and the servers were polite and showed some of that famous Cajun hospitality. The crab was some of the best I've had and I loved trying gator for the first time. Gator is good both grilled and fried. The fries were also delicious.
Rick Cronkrite
Great food! Had the muffuletta for lunch one day, it was amazing. Came back the next night and had the Cajun seafood platter. It was hands down the best seafood platter I've ever had.
The band starts at 7 pm, good music and a group of people began dancing right away.
I'm ever in New Orleans again I will make sure I eat here again!
Bill Merritt
Food was great, service was very good, prices a bit higher than I expected but it is New Orleans. I went at about one thirty, and it wasn't too crowded. I had a pot roast Po'boy, and my friend had a grilled chicken salad. Both were excellent and our waitress was very diligent, but not hovering. I look forward to going back.
Warren Hall
Great food wonderful atmosphere.
Karen McCabe Becker
I ate at the original Mulate's out in the middle of Louisiana when I was driving across the country 10 years ago. It was a memorable experience and the food was incredible! My husband couldn't wait to try it when we drove across the country this year. Unfortunately, Mulate's has moved to the middle of New Orleans, upped it's prices and lost its authenticity & charm. It's now just a big tourist joint. The food is not bad but it's not what it used to be. Perhaps if I weren't comparing it to the original, I wouldn't be so disappointed. But I did have the wonderful experience of eating at the original, so I can't help but compare.
Miriam S
Have been there many times. Always busy& noisy. Great zydeco type music. Food .....This time not great. Overcooked dry tasteless. Disappointed. Not the usual great food. Wait once seated(30min) for our tasteless food was 45min. May think twice about going back and have been going every year while in New Orleans😝 …
Monika Piazza
We had a nice evening of food and drinks at Mulate's. The service was good. The server was really attentive and made sure we always had cold drinks coming. The food was hot and tasty, but it felt a bit overpriced for what it was. There wasn't anything we ordered that was over the top memorable. We ordered some of the staples, too, the shrimp and crawfish etouffee, the gumbo...it was all good, but not fantastic. The music/band was great.
Overall, I would recommend this place.
William Hunt
Low key casual place. Exceptionally friendly staff. Good ingredients that are well prepared. Very good gumbo. My shrimp salad had almost more shrimps than lettuce, excellent. The warm pecan pie was the best desert that I had all week. If you are interested in home style Cajun food, this is the place.
Meredith McCormack
I ate here twice recently- once with family - once with a large group from work. We had excellent service both times. Everyone enjoyed their meal. I particularly liked the fried shrimp and zydeco gumbo!
Christina Liepke
Went for lunch. You can ask for frog legs as an appetizer even though it is no longer on the menu as a stand alone item... they are wonderfully seasoned. Salad portions are huge, consider sharing if you are not too hungry. Went here a few years ago and again last week and the food is still great. Prices are a bit high so 4 stars instead of 5
Michelle B
This place has the best bread pudding I have ever had! The sauce makes it even better! The food is great and the owner is amazing! He gave us free gator and dessert! The work staff is friendly and there was a live band while I was present. There is also a place to dance while there! Great place! Can't wait to visit Nola again so I can go Back!
Angela Cipriano
This came as a recommendation from a local Louisiana lady I met. Check their schedule for live Cajun 🎶 It's a large restaurant with dance floor and delicious food; portions are big, hot & good! We had jambalaya, shrimp & catfish - yum!!! Our waitress was great, I wish I remembered her name? She was friendly and attentive and made the dining experience a memorable one.
Jennifer Woods
I ate at Mulate's a few weeks back and it really was a great experience. The three gentlemen working the front door were very welcoming and joked with me and my husband right from the start. They then sat us at a table where we were further entertained by our server, Boris, who was very interactive with us. The band was GREAT and watching the dancers was a lot of fun! The food came out and it was okay for the pricing. Overall the experience was great but the food does come up a little short in my opinion.
Rita Toombs
The service was great and the food was just as good 👍 😋 …
Andy Lamb
Did not care much for the food but it was not because it was not good. Just did not fit my pallette. This is a very cool place.
David Wayne
Shrimp platter was Great! If you love fried shrimp you will love it here
Clifton Walker
Nice atmosphere. Owner introduced himself and gave us two free appetizers. Live music was good. Food was great! HUMONGOUS portions! Would definitely go again next time I'm in New Orleans.
JoJo Foster
One of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans. The food here is excellent and not to expensive. The portions are huge, the staff is always friendly and the drinks are amazing. Everything that I have ever had here was worth every dime. However be prepared to pay an added gratuity.
Natasha Bridge
Fantastic place with live music, a dance floor and great food. Informal atmosphere. We wanted somewhere to listen to live music with kids and this ticked the box.
