Planet Word is different kind of museum - a voice-activated museum in the jungle of museums in Washington DC. A museum about the word and languages through the interactive exhibits, where people of all ages can enjoy and have fun. I saw lots of kids having more fun than adults. When you enter the museum building, you see a beautiful “Speaking Willow” tree. You hear the murmur in many languages when you pass under the branches of this tree. When we entered the museum, we were asked to wear the mask at the front desk and to start from third floor and work our way down. The masks are still mandatory inside the museum is little too much. And yes, they make sure you wear the mask. It is very interesting to know the whole process of how we learn to speak our first language. You learn lots of unique things about the world languages and how English language has picked up the words from different languages. You can paint with the virtual brush and change the atmosphere in the room. We also used the teleprompter and delivered the famous speech. I saw many kids trying to sing on karaoke. We need to get the timed entry ticket online, although it is free (with some donation if you are interested). How you are getting attention with some words and the advertisers use them to sell their products was interesting to learn. Must visit attraction in Washington DC.

This place is so cool. I took my teenage Godson and he had a blast. There are a ton of interactive stations throughout the museum as well as a recording studio for people of any age to test their public speaking skills… for just fun of course. I highly recommend this activity for all ages. Proof of identification and vaccination are required along with masks. You may visit online to reserve free tickets.

Absolutely worth a visit. So interesting! Three levels of interactive exhibits to play with. Reservations and three hours to visit recommended. The cost of the museum is free but don’t be shy to donate to help keep it functioning! Staff are lovely. Lots of parking options nearby and collocated with a good restaurant called Immigrant Food. Makes for a really fun afternoon and it’s a nice change from the usual. Perfect for a rainy day as it is all inside. Enjoy!

Well put together, spaced out, fun and educational! staff are friendly and helpful. There aren’t many exhibits, but the ones there are very interactive and 2 hours will fly by as you explore. Only thing I’ll say is it was a bit warm inside.

Museum is free with optional donation. The building is stunning in Victorian brick and tile. They’ve done an admirable job with a somewhat vague premise. As I moved through the impressive exhibits, I began to wonder if this museum is a tax shelter for the wealthy as well as an educational experience. Lots of money was poured into the tech driven galleries. People seemed engaged and awed by the interactivity and bright lights. Each area touched briefly on a topic that could support a lifetime of research. Hence the sense that something was missing.

If you have kids or just love books and language you must visit. Beautiful building fantastic interactive exhibits. Really thoughtful content. Don't miss the little short story generator choose a genre and it will print a 'receipt' with a short story to take home. Beautiful gifts in the shop too. 8/22 timed entry booked in advance or at the door online.

This museum was simply amazing and so fun. We reserved our tickets online and was so easy to check in upon arrival. So many different interactive engaging activities, rooms and 3 floors of knowledge. Will definitely recommend for families. Perfect for our Sunday Funday Activity.

Not your typical museum — super interactive & automated (think voice-activated type) exhibits. Overall it was a pretty interesting, cool, and engaging experience although most of it was focused on very basic language facts. Just seemed it didn’t go deep at all into the history or study of “language”, and you can tell that the aesthetic is the number one priority. Good for kids and adults but I’d imagine that someone like an experienced writer, for example, would quickly become bored. I’d suggest going with at least another person just because some of the activities/exhibits are made for two. Reservations are recommended; walk-ins are welcome but aren’t admitted once capacity is reached. NOTE masks are still required for all as of July 2022.

Fantastic place that feels more like a pop up event than a museum. Every exhibit is interactive and in a fun, educational way, rather than gimmicky. Our whole family enjoyed most exhibits immensely especially the reading room. Very neat uses of technology.

This museum was so fun and really interesting. Pretty much every exhibit was interactive. There's a large exhibit teaching you about different languages, a feature about comedy, a karaoke room, and an interactive show with a light up word wall. Highly recommend to anyone in the DC area. I spent about 2-2.5 hours there and could have stayed much longer. Recommend going with a friend because there's one exhibit that requires 2 people for the activity.

A great family experience - especially families of readers. It is interactive. Even little ones will find the colors and exhibits visually interesting. Individuals may have less fun since many of the experiences are more fun with a friend. Eat at Immigrant Food if you have time

Fantastic museum, especially given it's free! Lots of activities and interesting exhibits. I think the Spoken World room could have been more focused on the languages themselves (most just seemed to be teaching you how to say different phrases rather than providing context or info about what makes them unique). Where do words come from was absolutely one of my favorite parts of the museum. It was funny, interesting, engaging and unique! I also really loved the library. Lots of hiddel surprises throughout!

Amazing! It was interactive, fun, and informative! Also free. It won’t take you long to go through it but it does have a lot going on. I went here with my 3 and 6 years old nieces and they loved it. There’s an included photo booth so you can get plenty cute pics. I don’t wanna spoil it all for you but it deserves a shot.

This was an unexpected gem. We hadn't planned on this, hadn't heard of it, but luckily did while we were there & was able to get in towards the end if the day on a Sunday without reserving in advance (I don't recommend testing your luck if you have a chance to reserve ahead!). This was so neat and interactive with exhibits about language, books that magically come alive, a karaoke room, a "paint" with different styles room, and one of my favorites was the performance in the room about English words!

Free with optional donation. Self-guided tour; they suggested to start from 3rd floor and working the way down. The 3rd floor the most interesting exhibit; lots of speaking and interactive pads and microphones. We were dining and were drawn to the "sculpture" across the street. We had no idea that it was a museum. My husband and I both have a love of words. The experience was so much fun. The hands-on activities built community engagement with other museum goers. A great way to spend a couple of hours.

I recommend this to anyone with kids or without kids. A really nice fun yet knowledgeable place to come to. When you walk in there this huge tree that talks to you when you speak to it. Now if you are wondering about being safe then the worries are over. When you come in they will give you stylus pins so you won't have to touch anything and also they have sanitizing stations every where. Just check out these amazing pictures. Like I said this place is AMAZING

This place is amazing! Who knew you could create so many activities with words! Great for all ages and stages. Many interactive displays and things to do. Right across the street from a circulator stop (yellow), so easy to get to. And it's free!

Interactive and informative. Definitely angled towards grade school guests but interesting and fun for anyone. The best parts of planet word is the tree out front with over 300 languages that you can hear playing from the branches activated by voice. And the restaurant that angles it’s menu on other cultures and highlighting causes that part of the profits go to and you can donate to

Photographing a wedding at Planet Word in D.C. was a totally unique experience. The museum, which is dedicated to language and words, provided a stunning and unconventional setting for the couple's special day. We started the day with getting ready shots in a nearby hotel. Later, we took advantage of the museum's beautiful galleries and exhibits for some, creative, romantic and intimate shots of the couple. Planet Word is a unique and beautiful venue for a wedding. Really interesting museum with tons of interactive exhibits. I went with my 3rd grade students and they loved it. Their favorite room was what they dubbed the "karaoke room" that focused on poetic lyric use but let you sing along into microphones.

A great interactive museum. Some exhibits are voice activated. Really cool place to learn about linguistic and everything around it. Highly recommend doing the Lexicon Lane. I personally don’t do much puzzle but this was really creative and cool how they put together world base puzzles.

An off-the-National-Mall museum that charges (suggested donation) for tickets is suspect in a city full of world-class, free museums. Despite the stigma, Planet Word Museum is a must-visit while in Washington, D.C. The museum takes a potentially dry subject like language and brings it to life. Here's why you should visit: 1) Exhibits: The experience starts before you open the doors into the museum. In the outdoor plaza near the entrance is Speaking Willow Tree. Stand under it and hear hundreds of different languages. Move inside, let the staff scan your ticket (most visitors reserve a pass online, but they do accept walk-ins at the top of every half hour) and take the library-designed elevator (or stairs) to start the inside exhibits from the third floor. The exhibits are very interactive using screens and digital art to tell the story of language- how we form words, spoken word, etc. A few highlights: The Spoken Word- iPads surround a lit globe with speakers from around the world on the screens teaching you their language (Russian, Turkish, Vietnamese, etc.). The Library- a stunningly-designed library with all types of books is on the second floor. Pick out a book and bring it to the long table to learn more about it through digital art. Find the hidden poetry nook somewhere in the library. Joking Around- A large room teaching you about the art of humor. You can even play a humor game with a partner to see who has a strong joke game. I'm Sold!- on the first floor is a little room teaching you how writers come up with ad copy. A quick tests your knowledge as you walk through a little maze. There are many other interactive exhibits throughout the museum from a photo booth to a recording studio to an area where you can do karaoke. It's a perfect museum for children! 2) Space: The museum is inside a restored 1869 Franklin School in downtown D.C. Designed by the same man behind the Smithsonian Castle, Adolf Cluss, it was one of eight public schools built in the city to use a standardized curriculum, setting the stage for education reform in the country. Eleven years later, inventor Alexander Graham Bell tested his first wireless communication from the Franklin School. Fast forward a few decades, and the Franklin School housed a homeless shelter before becoming Planet Word. The museum tried to maintain many of the original floors and design. 3) Location: It's just off newly renovated Franklin Square Park in downtown D.C. close to the McPherson Square Metro and Metro Center Stations. Because of its location, it's easy to get to- by Capital Bikeshare, walking, etc. If you're hungry, Immigrant Food is inside the museum as well as other great spots like- The Best Sandwich Shop, Slipstream and Michele's. 4) Staff: The entire staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. They are throughout the museum to help guide you and answer any questions. 5) Accessibility: They incorporate sign into their exhibits and is wheelchair accessible. 6) Price: When you reserve your ticket online, you can give a suggested donation between $0-$15. If you can afford it, give $15. Compared to other museums in the country, it's a reasonable price. If you can't afford it, you can opt to pay nothing, making it accessible for all income levels. 7) Gift Shop: On the bottom floor behind the main lobby is a gift shop with a diverse selection of books, D.C.-centric goods and language-centric clothing. For example, you can buy a Scrabble-designed purse. Budget at least 15 minutes to brose the gift shop. If you plan to visit, reserve a ticket online. Note that it's open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday only.

What’s not to love about a museum dedicated to Words and Language?? Thoroughly enjoyed our visit! Bummed the VR room was closed, but we loved all of the exhibits we were able to see-particularly the library with the dioramas and reading table! We will return!

This is a unique museum with interactive fun displays that keeps you busy throughout your visit. They recommend 1-1/2 hour to visit the 3 floors of display. The top two floors of the building is not open to visitors. There is no entry fee but donations are recommended. Adults and kids would enjoy the displays. There is a gift shop on the first floor. There are fun things in every turn, the inside of the elevator looks like a library, there's a hidden door in the middle of a bookshelf wall. The real gem here is the building itself. This was the old Franklin School which was constructed between 1865 and 1868. The building was saved from the demolition ball and brought back to life for this project.

This is a WONDERFUL museum. A great place to learn new things and it’s very interactive. I like that the staff give you styluses to use on the touch displays to limit the spread the germs. Highly recommend for young adults. Kids will like this too but may get bored quickly and want to move room to room as my niece did. Admission is free which is amazing! A must see in DC.

This was one of our family’s DC favorites. It’s ultra chic, high-tech, and artistic yet full of LOTS of linguistic education presented in a relevant, fun, hilarious way. Books come alive. Words are “painted.” Speech, joke, and writing strategies explained using examples we all know and love. Sing the songs you know by heart and learn why we remember every lyric. Give a speech by JFK, Oprah or Mufasa using a teleprompter. You’ll think about language in an entirely new way after visiting. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Brought my two boys (6 & 4), and we all had a blast. We are a family of word and book lovers, so this was great for all of us. Exhibits were very interactive. The spaces were clean, bright, interesting to look at. There was a photo booth that gave you SAT words to act out. We got "irascible" and "stupefied." And my 6yo was trying out the words in real life by the end of the day. Highly recommend for the language/word/book nerds out there. And recommend for everyone else cuz it's just fun and thoughtful.

As a former linguist, it's super easy to recommend this place. It is clearly designed with children 8+ in mind, but the experience is well worth it to adults who want to learn how we shape language and how it shapes us in turn. All exhibits are delightfully interactive and really bring out your inner child. My friend said that basically everyone visitibg DC should go at least once, and at 2-3 hours visitation time and completely free entry, I have to agree.

This museum is INCREDIBLE! I would highly recommend to anyone, not just language enthusiasts. It's highly interactive and teaches you everything from words in other languages in the global languages room to how to analyze song lyrics in the karaoke room. I would say it's more geared towards adults but there are some elements kids could enjoy. Older elementary at least. Free street Parking was fairly easy to find on a Sunday morning. Free admission, but I'd definitely recommend donating or at least buying something in the gift shop. We spent a solid morning here. I will be back!

Cool place. We had not heard of this place and it is off the beaten path. It is relatively small which was nice after navigating a couple of the massive Smithsonians. I was with two college students and they both had enjoyed it as much as I did. Several young families were there and the little children were also kept interested by the engaging rooms.

Amazing! This exhibit was an interactive experience! As a life long lover of words, I am their target audience. Regardless, I do highly recommend this for everyone, especially curious kids. There are so many fun and interactive experiences throughout the museum, and they are made pertinent and interesting in today's world. Exhibits cover everything from the poetry of songwriting to the double speak of advertisements. Personal highlights were the language tree out front, the stunning reading room, and the SAT word photo booth! My only complaint would be that the museum is still new and lacking a few exhibits - but I guess that just gives me an excuse to have to check it out again!

This was an amazing experience! Extremely interactive and educational. Fun for all ages. Some of my favorite exhibits were the languages from around the world and the trivia game about where English words come from. Also it’s very COVID-safe still— masks are mandatory and lots of hand sanitizer available.

Local Washingtonian- I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and this is our favorite museum hands down. ADHD mama and kids all enjoy. So much to look at and learn and ENGAGE with, but not in an overstimulated way. Karaoke- photo booth- secret poetry nook- the list goes on!

Ok ,so I heard about this place during lock down on @nbc4 . Today I went there for a job interview ♡Hope I get it♡. That's beside the point this place is amazing we have lots of museums in Washington DC, but this is one of the best ones that you have to go to anyone Visiting DC, or if you live here. This is not part of the Smithsonians, It's better SORRY guys. This is an interactive word museum. I was They're having so much fun I forgot I had to go home .Every part of this museum is interactive and plus they have a restaurant, a real restaurant. Drop your kids off and go have something to drink,can't get better than that. They have a cool gift shop. If you will ever in DC you have to check out Planet Word. I will be back there.. Great spot for dates.

For a linguist this museum is like a Disneyland. The content of the exhibitions is so thought through, entertaining, educational and multi media. I was in awe the entire time I was there. If you don't know what linguistics is this is a great way to learn about the discipline. I am sure that after visiting this place you would want to become a linguist.

We thoroughly enjoyed our four hours at Planet Word. We were greeted warmly by the staff and given a quick overview of the museum and how to get the best experience out of it. We took our time and still felt there was more we could have explored. The Spoken World exhibit is fantastic, interactive, educational, and fun. The exhibits were professionally done, and many, including the interviews and stories were thought-provoking. Each exhibit covered different aspects of language in unique ways. We went into the museum thinking it was more traditional with artifacts and collections, but Planet Word is truly something special: engaging, inclusive, and educational -- and made great use of interactive technologies. Suitable for everyone.

The secret room in the library was my favorite- you'll have classic poetry read to you! Truly a great addition to DC, and a must for librarians, educators and students.

One of the best museums in Washington DC. This museum ain't too big, but it packs a punch. You get to explore each room that tells a fascinating tale about languages. You could spend a very long time just in one room squeezing out all the info, quizzes, and puzzles that each room offers. There are very entertaining interactive exhibits of many forms: touchscreens, exhibits where you talk to solve puzzles. This place pretty much has you using all your senses. Overall this place was very fun, informative, and modern. Definitely worth a go if you're in DC!

Amazing, interactive exhibits at this museum that blew our minds. We tried to take our nephew to the kids section at the Library of Congress, but they closed earlier than we thought. We came to Planet Word instead and it was way cooler than we thought. Kids and adults will find the exhibits both fun and educational, a rarity for a museum about words!

An immersive word adventure that kids of all ages and adults will absolutely love. Reserve tickets ahead of time but walk-ups will mostly be available. Start on the third floor and work your way down. Plan to take your time. There is something to look at everywhere: walls, ceiling, columns, etc. Planet Word provides you with a stylus for the many interactive exhibits. Plenty of space and hand sanitizer. Masks are required, and I only saw one person who had theirs half-on. Staff quietly asked him to pull it over his nose. 👍 Which he did, no problem. There are games, a secret room, a library that comes to life when you select books, and places to record your thoughts. Honestly, it was an amazing experience, and I plan to go again without the kids just to soak it up again.

The exhibits were fun and engaging, so there was plenty for us all to learn and discover about the history of words, language, meaning, and connection. Planet Word is now my favorite museum in DC! It covered language in general, development, usage (meaning, jokes, songs, marketing), and different languages around the world. The exhibits were highly interactive and engaging. Fun for all ages! Admission is free, but a $15 donation per person is encouraged to keep the museum going. You can reserve passes ahead of time, and there are walk up passes available every hour on each half hour (10:30, 11:30, etc) pending availability.

THE BEST MUSEUM IN DC. You have to buy tickets for a specific time, but it's worth it because it's not overcrowded so everyone gets to interact with each unique piece of tech. So many innovative ways to teach things. collegiates and kids alike were enjoying themselves. So many cool secrets. You can tell a lot of smart people worked on this place.

What an amazing new museum that's recently reopened. A lot of the big free museums are still closed due to covid, but this one is well worth the entrance fee. It's an interactive museum about language. You'll get to hear a lot of languages in the world room. The Word Wall was a lot of fun. The karaoke poetry exhibit and the jokes exhibit were a refreshing experience. Would love to go back again.

Tucked away in downtown DC, a few blocks north of the mall, is the brilliant, fascinating, interactive museum called Planet Word. You can easily grab a pass online. I took my kids here in May of 2021, and they were accepting both online passes and walk ins. Here's what you need to know: • There are 3 levels. Start at the top and work your way down. If you can, get there as close as you can to opening. You'll have less traffic. •This is a smaller museum, but how fast you go through it depends on how much you choose to interact with the displays. It took us about an hour 1/2 with myself, a 13 and 10 year old. I honestly would have stayed longer because I am fascinated by language. But my kids were not disappointed. They really loved it. •Upon entry, go to the front desk to check in. They'll give you a pen with a round tip. You'll use this soft tip to tap on and activate the displays. •Our personal favorite room was the interactive word show where you could speak into a microphone. But there was also a karaoke room, a world language room, a library with cool lighting and mirrors, and a joke room. •Parking on the street can be tricky, but there are plenty of nearby parking garages. If you have the parking panda app, you can reserve a spot ahead of time. Otherwise, if you're near a metro, you can just use that. Loved this museum and would definitely go back!

This is now my second time going to Planet Word, and I feel like I had more fun each time! I did one of the cases on lexicon Lane, the jukebox hero, and it was so fun, deciphering clues, and trying to crack the case with friends! The staff is so welcoming, professional, friendly, and hands-on. I went on Veterans Day this time and there were so many elementary school kids there on a field trip, but that was the best part, because we were with the students in the karaoke room, and we got to sing songs together with the kids, we shared the standing microphones and had a blast!

My kids range in age from preschool to 8th grade, & it can be really hard to find activities that keep everyone happy, but Planet Word did it. We had a blast today. It is really interactive & creatively presented, & my kids learned a lot about language from it. I’d say their favorites were the word wall protection thing, painting with adjectives, the karaoke room, & the puzzle box we did in Lexicon Lane (and can I say that it was great that they had coloring pages & magnetic puzzles there to keep my preschooler happy when he lost interest in the puzzle box his siblings were doing?). DC is filled with fantastic, well-curated/well-planned, and free museums. Planet Word is one of those! A relatively newer museum in the District (opened in October 2020), Planet Word is known as the museum "where language comes to life." An immersive language, voice-activated, and interactive experience that is perfect for families and people of all ages. While free (suggestion $15 donation), it's recommended to reserve a pass. Passes are released at 10 a.m. on the first of each month for the month following. Daily walk-in passes are available on the half hour of every hour starting at 10:30 a.m. After checking in, the staff will recommend you start on the 3rd floor and make your way down to the first. Exhibits on the 3rd floor include First Words, Where Do Words Come From?, the Spoken World, and Lexicon Lane. Lexicon Lane is a puzzle-solving experience that costs $20/case. Exhibits on the 2nd floor include Unlock the Music, Joking Around, Word Worlds, the Schwarzman Family Library, and Lend Me Your Ears. Finally, exhibits on the 1st floor include I'm Sold! and Words Matter. The Immigrant Food + Restaurant is also located on the first floor, as well as the gift shop and Franklin School Historical Exhibit. My favorite exhibits were the Where Do Words Come From? (so interactive and creative), Spoken World (you can experience languages around the world), Unlock the Music (so much fun hearing people karaoke), the Library (there's a hidden door to a poetry nook!), and I'm Sold!. However, I thought all the exhibits were well-planned and thoughtfully created. It's such a wonderful family-friendly museum experience. My husband and I very much enjoyed our time in the museum, and I'd recommend checking out Planet Word to visitors and residents alike! Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Fun fact: In 1880, Alexander Graham Bell made his first successful transmission of a “photophone” message from the rooftop of the Franklin School to his lab on L Street.

What a fun museum! I visited at 10am on a Friday. There were probably a dozen other people, so it was quite easy to space out and see everything. There were a few technical glitches and some displays were not working but this will all improve with time. It's still a great time to visit. COVID safety precautions: capacity is limited, masks are required, there are sanitizers throughout, you can borrow a stylus when you arrive to touch the screens, and you can use your own headphones on most installations. I might have missed this but I think they should also have you agree to a list of conditions when you get your passes online, ie: you do not feel sick, have a temperature, etc. The passes are free and released on a rolling basis. I did not receive a confirmation so take a screenshot just in case. I don't think you actually need a confirmation email but if you want one, just DM them on social media. The entire museum is digitally interactive. It takes some time and patience to interact with the exhibits. If you're like me and have a constant pull from your phone to multitask just try to focus and turn that mode of your brain off. I wound up spending an hour and 45 min and didn't even see everything! The exhibits have speech recognition AI that is still learning. It was difficult to speak loud enough through a mask in a room with other people talking for it to hear me but you can always just click buttons to move to the next screen. An unexpected high point of my visit was the music room that has a karaoke set up. I am not an extrovert or musically inclined and had a great time singing (socially distanced) with strangers. If you're not paying attention you could miss the educational explanations of song structure and elements of hooks and such but you will be entertained for sure! It was such a nice release from being quarantined for so long! I hope in the future they offer language classes and an exhibit on preserving endangered languages, but right now they're doing great and the experience is really different from any other museum.

I love how accessible and interactive the museum experience is, and all of the rooms are fantastic! I was constantly “wow”-ing at the creative activities and just general use of space. As an adult visitor, it was very fun, and despite my background, I learned a lot of new things!

I hate telling people about this because it seems such a hidden gem. This might be my favorite museum in DC (ok, top 3 anyway). This museum is a bit smaller than many of the other Smithsonians, but it is truly at 21st exhibition. The learning and wondering is completely interactive. They use pop culture to relate concepts to those seen all around us. The content is enough to captivate almost anyone for 1.5 hours but not so overwhelming it becomes daunting. Phenomenal spot.

What a cool and high-tech place! I am so glad I found it on the map and appreciated all the reviews that helped me to make the decision. My 2 children (10 and 14) thoroughly enjoyed it too. The museum use interactive activities to explain the importance of words and languages. You can talk to a microphone to activate various scenes, you can sing a karaoke, you can bring books to life (my favorite), and you can test your knowledge by answering questions. The entire museum occupies 3 stories. You take an elevator up to the 3rd floor and work down. It is not a big museum and I'd say 1 hour would be good. We were in the first to enter the museum on a weekday so not very crowded.

Planet Word is pretty cool! I do recommend reserving tickets online in advance. There is no cost but a recommended donation of $15 per person. They DID require proof of vaccination and face masks for all guests, which was great. For the museum itself, it's quite interactive. I thought they would have stylus for each guest because there were a lot of touch screens throughout but they did have regularly played hand sanitizing stations. The content is appropriate for all ages but the presentation seems geared towards kids and families and casual museum goers. It was really nice and you could easily spend multiple hours there.

We had so much fun learning about language. It was so interactive from the motion light tree outside to the books coming alive in the library. They also have a puzzle room on the third floor called Lexicon Lane. It is an additional $20, but if you like escape rooms, you will enjoy these puzzles. They even have a room with karaoke, why couldn't English class in school be this fun.

I loved this new (to me at least museum). If you like language or knowing about the development of language, this is a museum for you. Although there are a few exhibits children may be interested in, overall I think this museum is best suited for ahead 10 and older. Younger children might get bored. Also, this is a pay-what-you-can museum - for now at least. While you can go for free, please pay something if you can to encourage these types of museums and this museum in particular.

Incredible execution. One of the most interactive exhibits I’ve seen. The advertising section could use a little work. The techniques referenced in the quizzes overlap heavily, and I disagree with quite a few of the answers. (And have a background in marketing.) But the exercise allows you to make your own ad at the end, and it scrolls on the screens in the room throughout the day, which is cool and creatively stimulating. Everything else was very impressive, even the gift shop!

AMAZING interactive museum about words. It was so much fun and I spent more time there than I thought, about two hours total (could've spent more time). All the exhibitions were really interesting and I really appreciated how interactive it was in that it wasn't all just reading. In fact, I read very little, and there was a lot of listening and questions and talking. Really awesome! The first exhibition was about different languages around the world and there was a video on made-up languages too. Another exhibition was about the English language in specific and how our words came to be (mostly from French, German, and Latin/Greek), and I liked the exhibition on jokes as well. There was also a room with a ton of books, and upon opening them on the table would start a short talk about the book. It was really well made and I enjoyed it! The last exhibit I went to was about ads and different tactics on language for ads, it was also really interesting. I highly, highly, highly recommend this museum because it's unique and interactive, not to mention it's very well made!

5 stars isn't enough. I loved this place! When I was considering a holiday to Washington DC from Northern Ireland I found this place online and it was the first I booked to see, the rest of the holiday was planned around this. It's highly interactive and visually stimulating. The joy of language, reading and words is something that exists all cultures in the world. It's our records, our laws, our heritage, our dreams and fears. This museum sets out to inspire a love of language and communication across mediums, so if you aren't a fast reader or find it a struggle instead of a joy, there is still an interest for you here. Is it more suitable for children? Yes I suppose it is, with its interactive colorful exhibits. Does that mean you can't enjoy it as an adult? Definite no! Your enjoyment will be relative to your imagination and love for communication. If you have a master's in linguistics or English lit then ok you probably don't need to be here, but if not this place may inspire you to try. 😉

My favourites were: the room where we got to write our answers to prompts & hang them up on the wall (also the Shane Koyczan video brought tears to my eyes, the jokes portion, & the whole wall of words. This museum is UNDERRATED. Hands down one of the best museums in the city. It's fun, interactive, engaging, great for all ages, and the best part is that, unlike the Smithsonian's, you can actually explore and experience the entire museum in just one visit. The space is also visually striking, with lots of beautifully crafted rooms/displays and plenty of natural light to show them off. The museum also has TONS of cool photo ops for Instagrammers.

I think kids, nerdy kids most of all would get the most out of this place, BUT you can still visit and have fun as a grown up. The karaoke, photobooth, speaking books, and language center were the best parts imo and the gift shop had very cute postcards. You don't have to make a reservation and we even got let in earlier than the time our passes indicated so the staff are very nice about that :^)

A really fantastic museum featuring 3 floors of interactive digital exhibits. My friends and I had a blast learning about world languages, watching a computer try to make a joke, and creating our own advertisement after learning about persuasive language. The museum provides fun for all ages and in a variety of ways, and can be done in 2-3 hours tops. What's really amazing is the museum's innovative technology that allows visitors to "paint" with words, get a virtual tour of a book just by placing it on a desk, and bring a diorama to life by speaking a famous quote into a microphone. Really creative stuff that will amaze little kids and is fun for adults, too. Overall, this is an amazing addition to D.C's museum collection, and best of all, it's free! Timed passes are available, but we were able to walk in without them.

If you enjoy words like I do, you will not be disappointed at Planet Word Museum. Being able to express yourself is an art and Planet Word is not short on the multitude of ways you can do just that. I've been there twice within a month and can't wait until I go again. Stepping into the elevator is an inviting portal of more than a gazillion words, then when you reach your destination (3rd floor), you are then ushered into the beginning of word use as a baby/toddler. The whole word universe takes off from there, and is as endless as infinite numbers and stars in the sky. This museum is great for all students, and that's everyone, because we all should continue to evolve and learn. LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!!!

This museum was recommended by a friend and is technologically amazing. 2 hours just isn't enough time even if there are no crowds. Our visit was cut short due to a private event, so I asked if I could come back the next day. Came back the next day and spent almost 3 hours there! The best part was the 3 walled "paint" room. Some "paints" can be laid over others, and some create a whole new scene. Someone later told me you could make the Northern Lights, so now I have to go back! The reading room is awesome where you get a mini trailer for any book you put under the lights. So glad something like this came to DC and now Franklin Square is open!

You can already spend a good amount of time there as is. Reserve your spot online or just show up, as they usually have no shows and are able to let people in.

My wife and i were just walking around the area, actually headed to city center park. We passed by a sign for a museum, so naturally we entered the gate. As we entered there was an electronic tree. It had lights and speakers dangling as if they were leaves or fruit. At first glance it was unnoticed. As we passed, sensors caught us and the tree responded to our movements beneath it. Then we recognized Cyrillic symbols along with other languages creating a statue of a man. As we entered the building we were told they were sold out for the day. They were so polite, and the entry was so nice, despite us being denied entry

Creative, interactive exhibits covering wide range of topics - history of English, features of world languages, literary/poetic devices in music, the role of language in advertising, language and humor, among others. I’d give five stars but I did feel that the exhibits lacked flow and focus; each exhibit was fabulous, but it was a one-off. I kept searching for the overarching story or argument being made, but ultimately Planet Word reads as an apolitical collection of pop linguistics facts, albeit very creatively presented. Still very interesting and a great experience overall.

Language is something people take for granted. This museum is an opportunity to delve into an aspect of ourselves that we’re intimately familiar with, yet know nothing about. Anyone can benefit from going to this museum, but I have a feeling it’ll be extra special to those already interested in linguistics, philosophy, literature, or cognition. The exhibits tackle a diverse range of subjects and do a great job of being both informative and entertaining. The museum is pay what you wish and the building itself is beautiful. This is a hot take... but in my opinion Planet Word is the best museum in DC. Please check it out and support it if you can!

Interactive displays work poorly. Sounds overlap and voice recognition is lacking. It's definitely aimed at a younger crowd (middle school, perhaps), so not that interesting for an adult native English speaker. Poetry information is inaccurate. Three stars instead of one because the gift shop has interesting stuff, and I think there's a chance the rest of the museum will improve over time.

All the exhibits were fascinating and I learned so much. I could have spent all day in the library alone. There are dioramas in the library and underneath the diorama is a drawer, pull out the drawer and the book is inside and tells you all about the scene you are looking at. This is another place with a secret door and it is well worth finding.

Which Words should be used to describe Planet Word - an interactive exhibition of Words? I'd say Amazing, Awesome, Cool, Fun, and Fantastic just to choose a few. It's a great time for ages 4 and up! If you like to read, or you're a Word geek or a logophile or you like languages, I strongly recommend that you get to Planet Word. To get the full experience, you'll need between 3 and 4 hours. But, if your pressed for time, you could do it in less. There are a lot of great elements to the show. Two pieces that will appeal to everyone are the Music/Karoke room and the Joke room. In the karoke room, you can select songs by a wide range of singers from Bob Dylan to Neal Diamond to Taylor Swift to One Republic to Disney's Frozen and sing along with them. You can also learn about the words in the song while you sing along! In the joke room, fair warning it's a lot of "dad" jokes which are great for younger kids, you can compete against your kids or significant other as to who can make the other person laugh 5 times first. I had a great time doing this with my 17 year old daughter! There are a number of other great rooms with other fun, interesting, and educational exhibits. Do not miss out!
