I'm amazed I've lived in the Seattle area all my life and have never been here. This is a great place to not only see some of Seattle's history but also many other fun exhibits. It is a great place to take kids with lots of interactive displays and plenty of room to run around. The animation space is particularly interesting although I was never clear how that fit into the history of Washington. The museum doesn't go into great depth in any one area but manages to cover a lot of ground with interesting displays. I particularly enjoyed the very large model train exhibit and the "driving" tour of some of eastern Washington's interesting landmarks. Large parking lot next door which might be best as parking is right in the area.

A nice museum to learn about the history of Washington state. I particularly liked the Natural History section that described the geological history of this place. It was interesting to learn about facts like the dry falls etc. They also have a working rail network model on display that’s fun to watch.
Anabel Pachano-Arismendi
Nice museum, they show Washington's history as it is, with all the good and bad things the people in this state has gone through, making the experience very realistic and educacional. If you go on the 3rd Thursday of any month, entrance is free. Parking is a little more expensive than it should be...

This museum was very informative and also interactive. The exhibit on immigration and the concentration camps for Americans of Japanese ancestry were very enlightening. There were sanitizers in a lot of areas. It took us 2 hours to go around the permanent and temporary exhibits.

The collection is not as large as those in the East Coast (where states have been around longer), but we learned a great deal, especially about the state's abundant natural resources that continue to power its economy. The railroad model with moving miniature trains was really cool!
There is also the all-too-familiar story of betrayal and displacement experienced by the Native Americans as new settlers started arriving in droves, and then later by the Japanese when they were sent to concentration camps during WW2. I'm glad the museum didn't downplay these topics the way they do in other places. Our visit concluded with an exhibition celebrating the cultural diversity of the state.
Allot at least 90 minutes if you're planning a visit. There is paid parking right next to the museum building (we paid $7). If you get hungry, there are several food options within walking distance of the museum.

Spent 1 hour on the current green book exhibition, and 1.5 hours on the permanent exhibition. Overall, it’s a nice place to get an overview of WA history. (But I do hope they could upgrade or fixed some broken monitors).
Sean Davison
Was fun, the director did an amazing job. It's fun and interesting. A lot of history focused on Washington state plus some other cool exhibits that go on rotation.

Tacoma museums are free on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 4 - 8 PM. You can also use your library card to visit Tacoma museums any day by checking out a pass. We had a nice time and really enjoyed The Green Book exhibit. There are perminent and traveling exhibits. Lovely building, friendly staff. Highly recommended! ⭐👍🏼⭐👍🏼⭐👍🏼⭐👍🏼⭐👍🏼

Learning about Washington State was so much fun. Being from the East Coast I did not know much about Washington State. When we visited they had miniature trains set up throughout the museum. Lots of hands on experience for my grandchildren!
Lisandra Martin
It was very informative on Washington’s history especially for my family who just moved here so we definitely learned at lot. It’s not a big museum so you might be done walking around in an hour or less. And also the front desk person was really friendly. The only thing why there’s only 4 stars is that their gift shop is closed.

I chose the museum for a special all-day weekend symposium, and it ended up being a beautiful location with convenient parking and close proximity to the airport for our invited guests in pockets of WA state to WA DC, and as far as Guatemala, Germany & flying in from India! All our guests thought the museum was beautiful. We especially appreciated our contact, Dave, from the museum. He is just an all-around great person to work with; a true professional who met with us prior to the event, answered all questions, and made sure the day was perfect. Our attendees said it was incredible and we had "hit it out of the park." (I give a lot of credit to the help from the staff and will definitely work with the museum again for special occasions).
Cathy McWilliams
We rented the museum for our wedding in May and we were thrilled from the beginning! Dave Becker was so very helpful from the beginning giving us a tour of all available areas, he explained every detail clearly and offered possible ideas for different areas. Amazing place !
Dave was so gracious with deliveries and tending to details to make our day so wonderful ! All through our experience from initial planning to the actual wedding he was there for us. We couldn't be more happy, other than I regret not adding another couple of hours, totally my fault on that. Our guests enjoyed themselves very much.
We highly recommend making this your venue for your wedding or any other special event you have coming up, I believe you will not be disappointed !
Thank you Dave and all the staff for making our journey to our day and the day of so wonderful!
Sincerely,
Mr.& Mrs. McIvor

The best Washington State history museum in Washington. So much to see. Love the trains.
Teresita De Jesus
We have our Christmas party there and was fun & entertainment
Jamie Holbrook
We make visiting the museum a holiday tradition. The target is to see all of the train displays from n-gauge o-gauge. However, we do get distracted with looking at the history museum's regular collection of old Northwest artifacts. Absolutely a great day.
Matt Wakefield
Fantastic place for kids and families. Really interactive stuff, and my baby was too young to engage with most of it yet, but he loved the voices and sounds of the exhibits.
Steve Nolan
Must visit if you live in Washington. Beautiful building in a neat part of Tacoma. Really enjoyed the animation exhibit they currently have.

I love to ❤️ explore history museums.
I love the model rail.
Lots of other exhibits are very interesting.
Migrants and their history, old suitcases old shoes etc are interesting.
Third Thursday 5 - 8 pm is FREE .
John N
Tripped on stairs & fell (not hurt) but an attendant was right there jonny on the spot. They asked to call 911 or something sounded very concerened. Very helpfull and appreciated. Great exhibits! My new shoes were the problem. Thankyou
Falan Martinez
We take our kids here a few times a year. The museum recently updated a large section on the first floor. Most of the exhibits are hands on and are interactive for younger kids. Our kids were engaged and curious about most of the displays. We did a treasure hunt during our visit. If you get a chance, check out the model train set upstairs it's really impressive. There is parking located right off Pacific Ave so it's a short walk to the entrance.
Solomon's Kingdom
Entry fee is a bit steep. $14 for one adult. This is more a history museum. I feel that history should not be this expensive. But, is worth it. The museum is very well maintained. A good amount of history from the history of this place and the people who inhabited it. Got to see some remains of pre historic animals who had roamed this place in the past. A lot of history is told with respect to the indians who used to live here. The dress that they wore, their language, their livelihood. Good to know that some of them are still alive. Three first floor is good with lots of information. The third floor was not impressive. Wonder why a history museum has details of people who lived in prisons and the crimes they committed. This is not something to be proud about and to be shown to kids. They should not be made famous.
Gregg Allen
We spent several hours at the museum which is not nearly enough! Plenty of great space. My favorite displays were the early industries and the model railroad. We will becoming back ready to absorb more!
Maggie Liu
A nice place to know the history of the state. And we also like the train models, so amazing.
Bucoda Warren
Always a fan of the history museum. I love the artwork on display currently for "horizon" and love the McNeil exhibit. You should definitely check it out before it's gone! If you miss it the amazing train display has been there as long as I've been in Tacoma. The detail and visual history is great.
Richard Posey
I had skipped this museum for the first three years I lived here. I'm sorry I waited so long. It's a good collection of exhibits and artifacts explaining how Washington came to be what it is today. There are also exhibits that are limited run, like the LBD (Little Black Dress) display and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images. Giving it a point off because some of the interactive displays were not working correctly. This museum pairs well with the MOHAI (Museum of History and Industry) in Seattle.
Ashley Delgadillo
CA Baydestrian Review: I love love love this museum! I visited this museum by myself and learned so much! I hadn't realized that Washington's history was so similar to CA's! I love the interactiveness of the museum and the fact that no space is wasted! The gift shop was AMAZING and had a good range of affordable to expensive gifts. The employees were so sweet and the customers I encountered there were so courteous. I'd love to come again with family in the future.
Morghan Townsend
Wide range of history exhibits covered. Wish the museum would’ve told a collective story rather than throw together, hard to follow at times, bits and pieces of history. Thankful for the exhibits that highlighted Native American art history- present and past
Nickawanna Shaw
Go there now. What a thoughtful and thought-provoking collection. So many timely historical interpretations that focus on contemporary issues that are connected to right now issues.
We had such wonderful discussions after our visit.
Lydia F
So worth while, you will not regret stopping here. Great displays and stories about the culture and history of the early settlers, many things to surprise and delight. Also don't miss the model railroad display on the 5th floor, so many great details!!!
Michael Lewis
A pretty good museum with well thought out exhibits. Does a good job of giving a overview of Washington state history but lacks more indepth or nuanced content. Very kid friendly.
Jennifer Corning
Love this fabulous museum. Interesting exhibits, great value. Be sure to visit the bridge of glass nearby.
Michael Td Roberts
The Washington State History Museum is about the history of Washington State and relation to the Pacific Northwest with artifacts from Women's Suffrage, Industrialization, Native American Tribes and items such as Clovis Points. Washington State History Museum is located in downtown Tacoma, easy to find, lots of great local exhibits also with several interactive exhibits. Check out the Washington State History Museum on your next visit to Tacoma. #localguides
Jonathan Shultis
I went to see a temporary exhibit and stayed to see the permanent exhibits which I found informative, multifaceted, and well executed. As a newcomer to Washington, this was a great place to learn a lot about the state quickly.
george h
Be sure to visit the model railroad on the 5th floor. It is a very accurate representation of Tacoma and surrounding area in the 50's seen from a railroad perspective.
Bethany Gust
It was delightful from beginning to end. A beautiful museum to be sure.
Leslie Johnson
Exhibits are put together very well. The section outling the geological history of the area is accessible to all ages and interest levels. The train display upstairs has the most intricate detail and features. The exhibit on the Japanese in the US during WWII was very informative, as I had only ever heard limited pieces of the story beforehand. All the other exhibits have their own merits as well, too many to list here.
Jennay Roberts
Love this place and the changing exbits. Low income people with ebt card can get their families in for $ 2 .00 a family. It's wonderful that they do that so everyone can enjoy this place.
Drayton Jackson
I took my sons to see the Men of Change Exhibit. My God what an exhibit. My 2 sons came out of there just excited to know that there are black men
Sarah Allen
Went on a school field trip. Enjoyed this trip. Took 1 point off because some of the sound features such as during the industrial age were difficult to hear and because I didn't understand how to go in order by time. I especially loved the exhibit where there were personal experiences with the shoes. I did cry. If this helped you, please consider hitting the thumbs up button.
Lori Leigh
Because our church uses the auditorium we were given free admission but I would have gladly paid. It was informative and fun
Samantha Purcell
Fantastic place with so much to see, read, and learn! I have always enjoyed spending time here! There was a toy exhibit upon our visit.
c
Amazing experience. We spent 3 hours and it was worth every penny. I hope they keep coming with new exhibits ideas.
Timothy Humbert
Got married here in 2015 and it was a great venue! Staff were super amazing at meeting our needs, and all-in-all, it made my wedding "historic"!
Guests were even allowed to tour the museum after the reception which was cool.
MrsMakeupMadness “1984msbrooke”
Who doesn't love an amazing history museum. Born and raised here in Washington State and live maybe 10 minutes away from this museum. Last time I went it was actually on a weekend and it wasn't really that busy it was nice being able to walk through and see everything without feeling super crowded.
Brandi
The museum was large and so nice. There are two expansive floors full of exhibits along with a huge interactive museum for younger kids.
I went on a weekday right when they opened. There were a few people and one school group. The exhibits are well maintained and layed out. There is a rotating exhibit. I got to learn about The Green Book. Lots of interactives for adults too. I enjoyed that they had multiple Green Books from past years to look through.
E R
There's a lot to see but with current COVID-19 fears I think it's a bit over-crowded even if you're vaxed. I wish w had skipped the visit.
Richard Webb
Fun place to visit for families with school age kids and it worked well for me and my 3 and 6 year old. Lots to see and learn. Being newer to the area it's a worthwhile place to visit just so you can learn more about the people that first called this place home, native and non-native, that eventually brought most of us.
Joran Palama
It was so fantastic to go to the History Museum. They provided a plethora of information that was geared not only towards adults teens adolescence but as well as toddlers. Many of the exhibits were Hands-On which meant that kids could touch-and-feel items that they would normally not be able to do in another Museum. It was not just history but also the evolution of life itself in the state.
michelle lara
It was a very nice and peaceful stroll. Loved some of the exhibits that you could interact with.
Chris Blacknall
The museum is a fun little piece of local history. It has great exhibits that are good for children and adults, with lots of interactive options.
Ingrid Zea
Very interesting and very thorough. The exhibits were very informative.
Christian B
Great place yo visit and a great experience. They have great exhibits and there is something for everyone.
Hails
Beautiful museum! Thoughtfully organized information that is both fun and educational.
John McIntyre
Very well put together.
James Stanley
I moved to the area about a year ago and have been looking for cultural spots around the area, and this museum hits the nail on the head. Wonderful exhibits from prehistoric periods to very recent history. They currently have a quilt gallery on display as well, which give me so much joy, as my great-grandmother crafted quilts by hand during the Depression. If you are looking for something fun to do, or want to learn more about Washington’s rich and vibrant history, check out this museum.
Simon Pan
Great museum. Love learning about Washington
Patrick McCarthy
Very clean. Kinda confusing layout. You go to the third floor than you go to the fifth floor and that's it.
For a state the size of Washington with so many stories to tell. You get less space than MOHAI to wander around. For 19 bucks. Kinda of a rip off.
But you do learn about the infamous Indian Residential Schools where kids got beat for talking their language and practicing beliefs. And than the Japanese Evacuation Camps during WW2.
No book store but all day parking was 13 bucks and is in the heart of down town. Cheap and affordable. The Tacoma Way.
Troy Goracke
This was a fun place for a conference reception. The cayering was great. Concrete made it hard to hear the mayor's speech, but everything else was excellent.
Andy Goelzer
Really cool place. Good for the whole family. Really big model train layout on the 5th floor.
Taylor
History Museum more focused on children, as an adult it's worth going at least once. I thought the history of camp Harmony in Puyallup was the most interesting. It's a good way to kill a few hours and learn a little more about Washington.
Roberta Gwynn
The train layout is the best exhibit. I loved it!
Julia Bonds
Very well rounded exhibits, and very inclusive as far as categories. The kids enjoyed it as well. Model trains, Native American, geology, early settlers, personal effects and items from all different eras. Loved it!
erin h
We had a good time and learned a lot. However elevator was broken down not good with stroller and disabled people.
Andi Dunham
I was expecting a larger variety of exhibits, but what they had was still interesting. The model train is absolutely the best part for us. I love that it features a replica of Union Station.
The only problem we had was paying for parking. The machines don't accept cash unless you park down the way by the art museum. The view is gorgeous back there, but the walk was unanticipated 😅.
Weston Gilmore
Great exhibits, really demonstrates how big of a piece the PNW played in the rest of the nation's development.
Nisty Moreno
I recently went on my son's field trip & I'll go again with my family. Loved how they had it all set out.
Netera_Dancer Pratt-Gutierrez
We went to a free event to see the Men of Power, very moving exhibit. This museum is beautiful and I love how close it is to the sites of Tacoma.
Sonya Kaye
These folks take pride in each exhibit. Clean. Professional and knowledgeable staff.
Carisa Shaw
We had a fantastic time. Loved seeing the diversity represented.
Nicolás Sabena
An amazingly beautiful museum. Really worth visiting, both for adults and kids. Located in a very nice part of Tacoma. Parking was $4 for 2 hours.
Aaron Alls
Was informative and great way to spend the day when it is raining. Based on review I read, I was expecting the museum to be smaller. It was about average in size and can spend a few hours here if watching all the videos and reading the exhibits. The train display was a cool way to see how the waterfront looked in the 50s.
Melissa Moon
When for the annual train model festival but will be back for other exhibits.
Garrett S.
3 floors to explore. The regular exhibits are varied and cover the time period from the pre-contact indigenous tribes to modern day pop culture ephemera. It's a great way to learn about Washington's big industries in the heart of downtown Tacoma. There are usually model train displays and if you like that, you can go outside and see the real thing.
Christopher Fenn
Loved the model train exhibition going on. 👌
Ali C
Very nicely set up. Kept the kids interest. We learned a lot. Always something different every time we come.
OTRx Travel
This museum has the GREEN BOOK exhibit. Which is very informative on how so-called negroes had to travel during the jim crow era. Whereas blacks weren't allowed at most hotels, restaurants and bars, the Green Book provided them with access to many establishments throughout the U.S. that were willing to house and feed them during their travels.
Sherrie Blackwelder
We have a group with children ranging from 3yrs old to 13 yrs old. The children liked the model trains! It was a quick look through. We spent a little over an hour and then we were ready to go see the chihuly glass bridge nearby.
Seph
I love history and i did get to learn more here.its a good place with alot to learn.Very interesting good history.
Mary Eyer
New exhibit on the people's of WA state from earliest history (Clovis peoples) on. Excellent section on immigrants in current generations and the history of abysmal treatment AND community building among our various peoples. Highly recommend - wish history classes in school could be taught as honestly...
Donna Vild
I took our youth group for the day to check out this museum. It never disappoints! I've been here over a dozen times over the last three years and I really enjoy this place. The architecture is beautiful, the staff are brilliant, and it's always so clean! On exhibit now, February 2018, are toys from the past. The kids enjoyed playing with the "old" faves.
Cat Koehn
Awesome, huge museum with tons of interactive exhibits! I loved that the exhibits were really inclusive of so many diverse groups who made history here.
Christopher Jones
Beautiful building, easy parking. "The Green Book" excellent exhibit. Note very walkable eating locations nearby and the glass musem..
S M
We always enjoy our visits and the kids learn something new each time about Washington as we do a few exhibits on the main floor each time before visiting the rotating/temporary exhibits. Exhibits are beautiful and more interactive ones are being added.
Definitely more enjoyable for the 8 and older crowd. Toddlers will definitely enjoy the annual Model Train Exhibit.
4/5 vs. 5/5 as the bathroom sinks don't work on a consistent basis. Seems like something that should be working..
Lauren Douglas
Very informative, lots of activities and different perspective ways of learning it for kids and adults. A part of the museum was closed that day sadly :( but there’s still so many things to learn and do! Finished in about 2hrs.
Joanna Chapman
Great local history, looking forward to returning when all the interactive bits are available again!!
Sarah Ellerbrock
The Japanese-American exhibit was tucked away in the far corner, and it was very easy to miss. The layout of the museum was not the most intuitive.
Kristin Olsen
Awesome. Toured for m
Possible wedding venue. The museum itself is amazing. Kids and groups alike will love this. ❤️
Richard Lund
The museum just reopened a few weeks ago after being closed for Covid safety. Not busy. Some displays were roped off and several rooms were empty. But it was very worth while. Current emphasis is on native American peoples and culture but there were other period displays as well.
Dragonfly Wing
Very friendly staff! Brought the grandkids...
We all enjoyed ourselves very much!
Mike Stevenson
Loved the staff and exhibits were awesome
Christina Neville (Cloey)
Really enjoyed the interactive exhibits, hubby wanted to see the prison exhibit really gave an awesome history of the area and interests we came for. Stairs to go up but also elevators available for those less able. This is important to me as my knee does act up and sometimes I am not able to go up long flight for stairs. Really good Interactive exhibits around the airplane building exhibits and the logging industry to name but a few interesting areas to check out. Love the model train exhibit multiple tracks multiple models nicely done.
Ampogm Moe
Their special exhibits are awesome! Toy topiary convinced us to buy a membership and we returned at least 5 times to see it and Still have not seen everything in the regular exhibits. It's also in this beautiful historic building, with the chulily bridge of glass steps away from their front door. Highly recommend this place!!
Lance Foss
The history here is not only informative, it's the raw truth. I learned so much about the Japanese internment camps that absolutely broke my heart. Well done. My only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars was that much of the interactive things were not working.
Josie Seger
We attended an event at the WA State History Museum a few weeks ago, and it was a ton of fun! The volunteers were so friendly, and we got to see the exhibits after hours as well. Plenty for adults to look at, plenty for kids to learn.
Larry Majercin
Our first visit and we were impressed. We attended the opening of the McNeil Island Penitentiary exhibit. The docents were engaging with all the visitors. They were very open, knowledgeable and communicative with the attendees. Since it was opening day, we also chatted with former island residents and even overheard a former inmate who was attending the show.
The 'flow' of the exhibit was a bit awkward, and an overhead map/diagram of the island and prison would have help support the other exhibits. While there was a chronology of sorts, it wasn't very well designed. As we rounded the main corner, you were unsure whether to head right or left (it was right). Overall the exhibit was spectacular.
We ran out of time to tour the remainder of the museum but will return.
Huseyin Gomleksizoglu
Ancients time part is so amazing. You can see weapons made from dragon glasses.
Michael Park
Somewhat in a PNW manner that soothes my ADHD the exhibits are scattered around, following thematic content rather than a timeline. There's an interesting mixture of pieces from the past to view, displays to interact with, and demonstration areas.
They have like a 20 second clip of Nirvana on one of the screens but don't have too large of a nod towards more recent Washington history, although the toy display from the recent decades was neat.
3 floors of displays to walk through an you can't beat the equal access 2$/family price tag for families with a Quest EBT card.
Rich Campbell
DO make a point to go when they have the annual train show. They do a really good job of putting the model trains on display and explaining them all to spectators. My boys love model trains so it was a treat. The train simulator is also a really cool activity. This year they have some really interesting cultural exhibits also and have a room downstairs where the kids can build with legos!
Harry J Lee
Wonderful exhibits, well maintained. Cultural and historical materials. There's also a very good HO model railroad exhibit always running.
Masyih Ford
The Washington State History Museum had some really interesting exhibits. I will definitely visit again.
Melinda Miner
This is honestly such a hidden gem. The history of Washington State is so fascinating. The exhibits are very interactive and engaging. Not only is it historically played out but also traces back the Geological aspects. A WINNER ALL THE WAY! LOTS for kids to do as well. Nobody will be bored at this rich history Museum
Chris Sherwood
Nice museum that is updated regularly. The bottom floor has lots of good information about the history of Washington. The upper floor is more geared for children, there's a nice display of model trains and lots of interactive things for kids to do.
Mark D Bullard
Staff wasn't too impressive, but the exhibits were top drawer. Very immersive, beautiful and interesting. I really enjoyed going through the exhibit with my 11 year old daughter, and as a 3rd generation Washingtonian I was proud to show my daughter all the interesting things we have in our history. Also opened up conversations about geological theory, racism, communism, socialism, unions vs business, etc, etc. It did not come across as leaning in any particular direction which I appreciate. Highly recommend for your family.
John Novak
Wonderfully curated museum. As an out of state traveller, I learned a lot about the state.
Regina Barker
Visited for free on 3rd Wednesday of each month from 3 to 8 p.m. Loved the toy exhibit on the 5th floor. Anyone from ages two to ninety would enjoy looking at and playing with toys found and enjoyed over the decades. Some exhibits allow you to relive your childhood with a hands-on experience. We enjoyed playing pack woman and building small cabins with Lincoln Logs. So many interesting exhibits about the history of our state. Definitely recommend going to see.
Brady Lisowski
I didn't know anything about my state and left here knowing significantly more! A lot of really cool pieces and exhibits. Very beautiful showrooms!
Avery
I had a lot of fun and brought my wife, daughter and our friend. Lots of cool information and a really cool rotating exhibit the time we went. I did, however, not like the liberal slant to a lot of the things... But the model teain exhibit made me feel better!
Charlie Calvert
They did a beautiful job putting this museum together. There are great sections on the natural world, Native Americans, and the economic and social history of the state. This museum goes pretty deep, with plenty of material to explore and study. To finish up, don't forget to go upstairs and see the beyond spectacular model trains...
Krizia Berg
You have to stop by! It's right next to Tacoma's other museums and it was a great exposure to local history. The exhibits were well kept and interesting and there was plenty to see. Just make sure to bring a jacket because I was freezing inside in shorts and a t-shirt (but we came in July, why would I have dressed to walk around in a refrigerator?)
Zach Cratty
Seems like a place you may not want to go unless in the mood for history, you would be COMPLETELY wrong in thinking that.
This place is amazing, it is a great price for how much you get to learn about the state of Washington and city of Tacoma. Excellent layout, beautiful art and helpful staff. When you go, be sure to carve out a good bit of time because I promise you will get wrapped up in all the wonderful things in the exhibits you won't realize 3hours has passed.
Ashley Horne
Definitely a must see! The set up of the exhibits is amazing and there's so much to learn about this beautiful state.
Luke S
I love that field trips come to learn here but when I came I was warned about the field trips and what time the kids would leave after my ticket purchase. Which feels to me that the employees are aware it's disruptive enough I could be impacted but chose to take my money first so that they didn't lose a sale. Still an amazing museum, just a frustrating start.
Danica Wright
Enjoyed our morning at the museum. The train layout is awesome. We hope to return after covid when the interactive exhibits are more accessible.
Lettuce Taco Bout ‘it
We live in a smaller community in Grays Harbor. I have taken my children here to experience Museums, other cultures, and what life is like in a bigger city. We look forward to more trips. We came to the exhibit on August 13, 2016, and the 11 year old had a blast. Not to mention the third Thursday from 2-8 is free admission.
Jim Cameron
You'll need at least 2 hours to do even a cursory tour, but this was a truly world-class museum explaining WA's history, industry and people. Lots of interactive displays, movies and things for kids. Also a stellar model train collection!
Jeremy Silver
Our church rents out the auditorium on Sunday mornings. Our family likes to tour the museum afterward as their exhibits seem to rotate out about every quarter. Parking is super easy and reasonable, great upstairs learning area for kids of all ages, always clean and very well kept, and the staff are so friendly and helpful.
Juan Carlos CASTILLO PEREIRA
My family and I enjoyed the visit so much. The layout , design, and information are so great.
Susan Huss
We took our family here to see and learn about Washington State history, we had a great time! The gentlemen at the counter is very friendly and I would highly recommend this place for everyone our childrens ages are 5,6,9, and 11. I loved in different areas that there was a lot of hand touching for our kids, they really enjoyed themselves. ☺
London Heady
Really expansive and informative at a bargain with volunteers that obviously care a great deal about preserving history
Ree Squared
It was pretty cool. I went for an MLK celebration but ended up staying to experience the museum. I thought it would be a bit boring but my 6 yr. Old daughter begged to stay. She was delighted. If we had more time we would have stayed longer than 2 hrs.
Jeff Smith
Great displays and interactive exhibits. We always love visiting the model railroad.
Ahava Goldwater
There have been several excellent visiting shows over the last several years. The permanent shows are also attractive and informative. All the shows make our local history vividly come alive. There is also a lovely gift shop that we always check out.
Shannon Koh
Really a must see destination for anyone visiting Western Washington, but ever so more important for residents ourselves! Deep history in beautiful exhibits that appeal to adults as children, with an amazing train display to boot. The special exhibits are wonderful as well - it was Toytopia when we last visited.
Tessa Shaw
I have been to the Washington State History Museum on many occasions. They always have great displays and of course being a museum it is very educational and fun for the whole family. This is also a great place to have a party, my friend got married at the Museum a few years back, I didn't even realize they offered that, you can have all types of events there. They also have great educational programs for kids.
Jewels Scarpelli
Was a little disappointed Took my Uncle and Aunt and my sister went we were the only ones there cost $11 per person was not that interesting. Were done in 45min
Cara Delozier
This oversized kid right here enjoys the hands-on nature of the exhibits and the incredibly personable staff of volunteers. We have enjoyed several of the recent temporary exhibits, particularly Make/Do, Jacob Lawrence and the model train festival.
Christian Kerrigan
Love taking my students here! The exhibits change from year to year, but the core historical exhibits about our state remain. My students love the interaction that they get to have, and enjoy seeing the things that we've been learning about all year!
Prashant KC
This is awesome Museum. It takes you through the history of Washington State. The geological, historical , cultural , art , science and technological journey across different time frame.
The museum is located in the downtown Tacoma. easily accessible via public transit . If you are driving, the parking is spacious. There is enough space in the lower or upper parking lot with reasonable parking fee. I used 2-4 hours option which was $5 in the weekend.
The museum itself is divided into two major exhibit floor : 3rd and 5th floor (at the time of my visit there was some construction going on the 4th floor, I am not sure if that will be open for public some time in the future). #rd floor had the history of Washington state. I really like the idea of a Take a ‘car trip of catastrophes’ which shows the 12 places of Washington where some catastrophe occurred.
5th floor had a elaborate exhibition of black dress and science/technology with special mention to railway display. There is an interactive railway display where I spent the most time.
The museum is really worth visiting. I would typically spend 3-5 hours depending on your level of interest.
The only thing I didn't like was the high entry fee. It should learn from the Smithsonian museums from DC and make this Museum free for all.
Alexander Burke
Always a great experience no matter what exhibit is showing. Their staff are always coordinated and friendly as well.
Patti Mills
Model Train Show is a wonderful family event.
Jacob
I absolutely love this Museum, me and my girlfriend went here a few times too make sure that we had a chance to see everything. I Highly Recommend coming to this Museum, so very much too learn.
Trisha Ostrander
Went for the In the Spirit festival, there were some wonderful vendors, an amazing singer & we got to check out the awesome exhibits for free. Can't wait to visit the museum for their next event!
Sara k
If you went here on field trips as a kid you might think this place is a bit stuffy and old hat. Don't be fooled! Last time I went there was a display of different shoes connected to the stories of their wearers. I stayed and listened to the whole 16 part retelling because it was so interesting. They've also done displays on the women's rights movement, the world wars, and trains to name a few. You can also learn about our state geography, native history and settler history. Check it out, it's worth your time.
Oliver Valente
I've gone twice in the last year and a half and it's been ok. Nice conversation starter for a quiet date. Prepare to talk and read a lot or be bored. Not a bad thing, just how the experience worked for us. Going with family was also ok. Just nothing that felt rare or enthralling. Just a decent look into Washington state history. Exactly as promised. Front desk can be very helpful or not at all depending on who's in. UWT students get in free which is nice!
Best part was the small model of old downtown Tacoma. Great fun for photographers (unlike most of the rest of the museum due to dim lighting). The detail in this model is spectacular. Just a fun time to watch it all work together no matter your age.
Overall good fun. Not too expensive at full price. Only would ever visit with different people or just once every few years.
Clark Cooley
Even though its been a few years since i last visited the museum, i have always enjoyed it each time i went. I especially love the rotating exhibits upstairs. My favorite so far was when you had the icons of Washington exhibit
NowI'mMe
I had never been here in the five years I've lived in Tacoma. Wow! I was missing out and didn't know it. First of all, I will say that I'm a disabled woman (bad back problems), living in low-income H.U.D. housing. This is important because as a disabled person who receives E.B.T. (food stamps), I was able to buy a ticket to the museum AND get two other friends in for $2.00! Yes, you read that correctly! My friends are both able-bodied and employed but the three of us together were, for this day, anyway, considered a family. And, my two friends ARE, for all intents and purposes my family. How cool is that?
We were visiting the museum for a Washington state local authors and artists Book Fair. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy myself but I really had fun and met many Olympia and Seattle artists, producing their own graphic novels and 'zines. One of the friends I was with is a very talented illustrator in his own right and many of the artists and writers at the book fair were friends with him. I got to meet them and see their work. I even bought a few inexpensive zines. I'm kicking myself for missing out on a free workshop for creating an eight-panel zine from one regular piece of white paper. That was the workshop I really needed! LOL. Oh, well, luckily western Washington has many such workshops happening all year.
We were there for that specific event so we didn't get to really explore the museum. But we definitely want to! In fact, with my EBT card, I can explore the museum now and not have to worry about the $14 admission. There are so many interesting and thought provoking exhibits that one day is not enough to completely experience all that the Washington State Historical Museum has to offer. Along with the Tacoma Art Museum, there's much to learn and enjoy about this part of the Pacific Northwest.
Melanie Morgana
We absolutely love this place!! So much to do, see, and experience. We've been three times and still have not seen it all. Another bonus to this area issue Tacoma, Union Station, Chihuly bridge over to Museum of Glass and Dock Street Marina to Commencement Bay.
Riley Harrison
This place is pretty cool. They have a model train area that is really cool. The building is pretty awesome. A lot of the history exhibits are interactive which is pretty cool. 4 stars because some of it was boring.
Osiris Jenkins
This is a great museum. Can spend a long time here. Upstairs they have a kids section that's alot of fun too. Kids can go and play while you have time to look at everything else. Located close to the glass museum and art museum. Also convenient access to the trolly outside.
Stephanie Mann
Toytopia was a great time but the train model city was incredibly massive and intricate and absolutely amazing. The historical and geographical displays and videos were well made fascinating to view and there were several additions that sparked the kids' interests as well.
Justin Henley
It was a nice facility, not very busy. There were a lot of stories about settlers and seemingly random individuals, not as many artifacts or significant historical events as I would like. Worth an hour or so, but not a must see.
Karen Nieto
Very fun and informative. Chaperoning a field trip with school.
Brayden Folk
We've been the WSHM several times, and their special exhibitions make the visits worthwhile. The current shows on magicians and creative reuse are a terrific blend of history, fascinating artifacts and contemporary artists--in both cases, topics I wouldn't think could make a cohesive show, yet they do.
Matthew Hutchinson
Lots of great exibits and the guy pretending to be an old west store owner was fun. Close parking is difficult since the since the meters are only good for 90 minutes, we had to repark and refill the meters 3 times. If parking was friendly I would give 5 stars.
Dennis Zyvoloski
The Super Folk program was great!
Oanh Schlesinger
Museums in general are very interesting, educational, and fun. To all the children staying home due to Coronavirus, and home schooled children, make a visit to this museum and call it interactive education experience.
Lisa Bennick
Stop by here and take in some Washington State history. History experience in a modern setting. Exhibits put together well. Not that great for a kid friendly experience. Good for those who prefer to take in sights without a bunch of kids running around bad for those who know their kids are going to touch everything they can.
Chad H
Fun and informative for the whole family. The layout is the only challenge for me. Tough to see everything in an organized way. My children were amazed by all the model train exhibits.
Kristine Stroad Moore
Excellent museum. Exhibits are one way and ones involving touch are blocked off, but still lots to see. Don't miss the amazing train display on top floor
Bruce Kalter
Great experience, I love to visit museums when I am traveling, gives me an idea of the people in the area, and helps me understand the societal experience, This museum gives you the idea of the hard work and determination needed to make Washington State what it is. It includes original Indians to the importance railroad and coal.
Chris Zawislak
Had a fun time with my son. The permanent exhibits are great and the one on the Goodwill Games was very informative. The model trains are fun as well.
Lew Scholl
Almost too extravagant in its displays. Huge and spectacular displays; If that's what you like, you might call it a 5-star place, but I think it's overkill $$$!!!???. I'm used to a more low-key history museum in Portland with plenty of information and grit.
Josa Snow
Seemed like a bit of a trite museum experience. I went away wishing I had learned more. Even trying to look up elements of the past the overall span of the history was fuzzy. I've left other museums with a broader grasp of a city and state's culture. Beautiful building and displays.
Darlene Stewart
Came and the McNeil Island exhibit was happening. Was interesting to see about that. All the photos of where the prison is now. Then the rest of the museum was fun. Great to learn little tid bits about Washington.
Briana C
Took the whole family to see the train display. The kids loved it and the grown-ups learned stuff too! Pay parking near building. Expect to get thru the museum in about 2.5 hrs.
Damon escartin
A mix of rotating exhibits along with permanent ones. rich with Washington State History. great for all ages. when done with the museum, be sure to walk along Pacific Avenue and support local retail stores.
Tim Bond
Wonderful to see all the model trains. Not sure how interesting the museum would be without them.
Merlyn Yopp
Excellent histories of the 18th and 19th centuries. Very educational. Excellent atmosphere.
Kevin Carlton
Outstanding museum! Awesome displays and lots of interactive displays. Great family destination, good value for the entertainment dollars and you might learn a thing or two 😉 …
Michael Douglas
One of the best places to see local history, and indulge yourself in a great selection of randomized exhibits that change with the season.
Mindy Trinh
it was really interesting to learn about washington state history. they had a lot of personal artifacts from families, and walk through exhibits like wagons from the Oregon trail. there was also an extremely impressive diorama of union station and around tacoma.
Robert Jackson
This museum is modern and spectacular. I highly recommend this for the family...lots to do and lots of interesting things to learn. It's huge...I could spend several days here!
Andrew Crook
The asking price is worth seeing the model train alone. Seriously, it's awesome and the folks who work here are very kind and helpful.
WildlyUnruly Adventures
Had a great time with the family! I really enjoyed the LBD (Little Black Dress) exhibit! Beautiful! Can’t wait to go back.
Angel._.boy01 01
A hands on experience. My youngest loves it!!
Matt Davis
Great exhibits that demonstrate how Washington's history fits into US history. Unfortunately the interactive exhibits aren't available right now, which is a shame.
Dee Hinman
Included a well rounded version on WA State's history with the native Americans, Japanese, industry, energy, etc... Very nice facility.
jim's opinion
This is a beautiful museum that is located in an area with stunning views of the bay and Mt Rainer. Lots of great local restaurants in walking distance makes for an easy day out.
Melissa King
I thought it would have more to do with various cities in WA and what they have to offer and what they were like yrs ago. I think the most I learned was when we were scrapbooking. Hope their open to more historic info, like how much crops we had vs now and how the health and education system has changed. They also have 3 floors that have nothing to do with WH. Whould like to see more hands on deck type of art/ making something that WA is best known for.
Angela Schauer
In my visit to the Washington State History Museum, I explored their exhibit on Washington Women. The exhibit, entitled “Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices,” focused on Women’s History and suffrage. There was some general information, but with a heavy focus on Washington state women and the state’s history of suffrage. Throughout the other exhibits, women were briefly mentioned but they were not the focus. The collection for the “Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices,” consisted mainly of photographs, text relaying the history, a petition, telegraph, letters, and other documents. This exhibit could answer questions relating to the main players in women’s suffrage in Washington as well as the struggles and successes of gaining the vote. This resource would give a good background for research and some primary sources. This particular exhibit was not digitized and available remotely. However, the website for the museum offers a page expressly dedicated to the Women’s History Consortium. This page brings together various partners to make women’s history materials available online.

Sara Santos
The staff here are informwd ans friendly. Unfortunately, the exhibits are sub-par. Little of interest. Out of 5 floors, only 2 had exhibits. I wanted to love it but it fell short.
Jacob Brown
It's still a history museum so subject matter can be dry but, they have neat interactive learning stations that the kid enjoys and special exhibits tend to be pretty interesting.
Cat Murphy (Songdog Fiber Arts)
Great place! Love the exhibits, my kids had a good time learning our State's history, too.
Mary Tetreau
Excellent exhibits and interactive learning opportunities. Couldn't see it all in one 2 hour visit...plan set least 3-4 hours if you want to see it all!
Alexander Khoroshilov
Good place for family with kids. But not enough exhibition, a lot of modern stuff (21 century) instead really historical things.
Jose Villalaz
A good place to spend an afternoon with friends or family. This museum is well taken care of. Clean and staff was friendly. I will definitely come back and bring family or friends here.
Moby N. W.
Very interesting. Enjoyed learning early geological history, some Native history and about pilgrims, unions and the military. My favorite part was the recent immigrant section. Really great.
Thomas Powell

Roseanne M
Model railroad is incredible. One of largest displays in Washington state. Exhibits change frequently. One of blue star museums, which means free for military families between Memorial Day and be Labor Day. Near Museum of Glass
Danny Carrao
This was just ok, I must admit. I was a bit disappointed, as I was hoping for more around how Washington came to be, as a state. The stuff they showcased was interesting, but it was life in general in different eras. Interesting, sure, but I was hoping for more about the first people to settle it, us getting statehood, etc.
Lisa Schey
Great way to learn some things and stay dry. I enjoyed it very much.
Jarell T. Smith
Great museum to get a brief history of Washington. The train model was awesome! It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.

Yield to the King Ministry
I love this museum. The Little Black Dress exhibit was interesting. Ample parking. Downtown Tacoma.

Cool, but has unrealized potential in my opinion. I do appreciate that they tried to at least acknowledge and not whitewash the history of American Indians and other minorities.
Ser laikiat
