Reviews of Natural History Museum of Utah
Michael Bowers
The dinosaur exhibit is wonderful. I love the gemstone exhibit too. I also enjoy the geology exhibit that traces the history of Utah through millions of years of massive change.
The museum regularly hosts visiting exhibits from all over the world. I recommend going during these times.
There are also interactive activities for children in the mornings and at scheduled times.
In other words, to get the most out this museum, you should look at their event schedule and plan ahead.

This was one of my favorite museum experiences I’ve ever been able to participate in. The walking amount can be a bit of a struggle for those with lesser endurance, but even then, slopes are gradual, elevators are available, and the entirety of the exhibits, save for a couple optional locations, appeared to be easy enough to navigate and handicap-friendly. The stories and presentations were excellently captured, and they made it very easy to discern between interactive and non-interactive attractions and displays. Fun for any age, with lots of visual, auditory, and tactile interactions throughout. Set aside a good 2-3 hours if you want to see everything and experience things wholly. We spent 2 and a half hours here and ended up having to be rushed out at closing time half-way through the Colors exhibit.
Absolutely worth the time, the travel, and the visit.

Had a great time here with my two small kids. Lots of steps but there was an elevator for the stroller that was quick and convenient. The dinosaur exhibit was a little hard to find and my husband ended up having to go back through with our 5yr old to find it before we left. Some of the hands on features didn’t work but most did and they were fun for everyone. The staff were helpful and our toddler was free. The gift shop is pricey but had some great stuff that the kids are still enjoying weeks later.

We went in during winter break, and it looks like others had the same idea, too! It's been a long time since I've visited the Natural History Museum, and I loved seeing all the new additions. Of course, the classic dinosaur area is always a win in my book. We enjoyed walking through the Cambodian exhibit named Angkor. Lots of cool artifacts! There are five levels of pure fun and subjects to explore. Our 2 year old loved her experience! There is even a play area with water and boats for little ones. They were a success! Lastly, we enjoyed stopping by the store and buying gifts for a very reasonable price. 10/10 recommended if you are in the Salt Lake City area!

This museum is actually smaller than I thought but absolutely worth it. I like going to different museums while I travel for work because no matter how many of the same things you see there is always some amazing one off things each museum has to offer. This museum doesn’t let down on this idea.
They have a really fantastic Native American masterpiece that is small but really packed with information, antiques, and pictures. This museum has a tiny section for stuffed animals when compared to San Diego or DC, but the few they have are really well presented and done well. The dinosaur section is jam packed with different animals and dinosaurs that it is overwhelming. I had to slow down in this section to really see all the amazing items they have here.
Here are a couple things they I found really amazing and have not seen this at other natural history museums. 1) the collection of eggs and turtle shells and they way they are presented. 2) the collection of triceratops’s heads from different types and how they are hung on the wall - breathe taking.. 3) the roof top access has a really great view of the valley.
This place is really great for kids. There are a lot of displays and items for kids to look at, to do, or learn about. One thing that was strange to me was how small their museum shop was and they did not have magnets or stickers about the museum. I collect some of this type of stuff and couldn’t find anything in the shop to pick up. ☹️
Got a couple hours to kill? Why not check it out.

Architectural jewel abuts the mountain-side overlooking Salt Lake City. Comprehensive exhibit on local first nation tribes is a must see, and floors on flora and fauna, rock formation and the dinosaur era are well curated and enough to interest both the young and old. Well worth a visit.
Loved the dioramas.
The cafe was being remodeled during our visit so pack snacks for the kids!

Great collection of dinosaur fossils, for dinosaur lovers. 😍🦕🦖 It's amazing to learn how many species have been discovered in Utah. The information providing context about Utah's changing ecosystem over millions of years is plentiful and very interesting.
I enjoyed the overall design of the building, making it easy to visit the different exhibits as a continuous path.
There are interactive displays for kids (and adults!) like one to see erosion in real time. Another amazing one is a touchscreen that allows you to explore the tree of life. Try finding humans! 🦠🌱🦀🦤🌵🐪🦐🍄🐝🪲🪴🌲
Finally, the exhibits with Native American art and artifacts also include informative and enjoyable videos of Native Americans explaining some of their traditions and current challenges. 👌

I really enjoyed the Egypt exhibit last summer. Overall, the museum is very easy to navigate. It’s not hectic & crowded. They have excellent discounts for U students & the staff is helpful & friendly!

We were very surprised with the size and the material this museum had to offer. We easily spent about 3 hours in the museum but we could certainly spend more if we had more energy. We actually ended up taking some pictures of the texts to read later at home. Amazing material showcasing the history of Utah, the actual city and many other cool chronological geology! We certainly learned a lot!

Really enjoyed my experience at the Natural History Museum of Utah earlier today. I was surprised at how large the building was up on the hill behind the University of Utah and right next to Red Butte Garden. The Nature of Color exhibit had me hooked. This seemed to be the most crowded area and it was interactive. I also enjoyed the other exhibits, but I was especially drawn to The Nature of Color.
Crystal Ellin
Definitely worth it. The view at the top was really cool. Lots to listen to and learn. There are some critters on display in the exhibits. The gift shop was really cute! However when we went the little Cafe wasn't open and it would have been nice to get a small snack before or after.

We love the museum! Great exhibits for all ages, and the rotating special exhibits are always really cool. My daughter will literally spend the entire day here if I let her, and even though I've got most of the full time exhibits memorized at this point, I still enjoy it too. In some ways I miss the old building (the minerals exhibits in particular feel like a bit of a downgrade), but overall the new building is pretty spectacular.
Kat Sheppard
Amazing museum! Great staff who were friendly and knowledgeable. I loved how each section had a place to keep my 2year old nephew entertained! The displays were beautiful and well thought out; I learned a lot and was engaged throughout the entire museum. The deli was under renovation so I can't attest to the food, but it would have been nice to have a few more snack options at the gift shop. We didn't want to leave once we got there but everyone was very hungry. Overall it was very pleasant and a great place to visit! Highly recommend!

Went during dinosaur festival which was pretty fun. Remember that this is the natural history museum, not a dinosaur museum so it covers native Americans, the history of native utah, even the dinosaurs are all native in Utah. Very fun experience I would recommend. I only planned on staying 2 hours, my 4 year old insisted on staying and stayed focused and occupied for 5 hours.
Lindsay Diamond
Great experience!! Everything was so nicely displayed and the lighting was great - made it easy to examine the items. The dinosaur exhibit was fantastic. The building is layed out nicely with a balcony that has a great view of the entire valley. I went in and took my time and spent hours but could go back again and spend hours more just exploring. Well worth the price of admission.

I haven't been to a natural history museum since I was a kid, so this was a fun experience. The venue is modern and well staged with a plethora of information and visual stimulation. It is adjacent to a lovely botanical garden venue so we combined the trip and had a wonderful few hours.
DK
This is one of the best museums I’ve been to in the past few years, especially around learning about dinosaurs. There is much to see, so it’s safe to carve out a few hours to half a day for a visit. Highly recommended!

Amazing place to take your dinosaur enthusiast! My kids love it here. They have multiple levels with different exhibits. Interactive displays for hands on learning and to ease your mind, hand sanitizer everywhere!
Gregory Tada
This place is awesome! We spent three hours there and could've stayed longer. The fossil exhibit is great, the color exhibit is fascinating, and the Native American exhibit is enlightening.
Tons of parking (at least on a Friday afternoon in the summer).
Micah Engle
I really enjoyed the exhibits, although the flow of the museum was odd. I started where the map said to start, but in each new area I came into it felt like I was starting at the end or in the middle. Well worth the price and great place to take the kids. There were lots of interactive exhibits to keep the kids interested
Tamilisa Miner
Wow! There was so much to see and do here! It was very interactive. I went with a 4th grade class and everyone had so much fun. We learned about weather, rocks, animals, gems, earthquakes, basket weaving, sun spots, insects, and so much more! The dinosaur exhibition was amazing. I also loved all of the little things to see. The color exhibit was so cool. I am planning on going back soon with my family!!
Sadie Caltrider
We have little kids, so they zip through museums and we don't get a chance to stop and read all the information, and it still took 3 hours to get through. The exhibits were fabulously displayed. The architecture of the building is art itself and the way the museum flows from floor to floor tells a story through time and keeps you fully engaged. We will certainly be back every time we find ourselves in SLC.
Michael E.
Easily one of the best thought out and organized museums in the world. The exhibits are captivating and engaging to all ages.
Plan ahead and expect to be there for 2 to 5 hours.
Well worth the price of admission at $20 a person. The staff is all friendly and helpful with answers to questions that come up.
Exhibit glass and surrounding areas were kept very clean and we saw touchable surfaces cleaned regularly throughout the building. Bathrooms were clean

If you like looking at dead stuff and old stuff, this is the place for you! And there’s even some alive stuff, including hissing cockroaches, frogs, large spiders, etc. (all in tanks, of course). The sheer amount of fossils and dinosaur bones they have is really awe-inspiring, and they also have a huge amount of native american artifacts. This is a very educational environment, and would be a great place to take your kids to introduce them to some new concepts.
Elisa Ramon
Very nice museum, especially if you have kids! There are some terraces with fantastic views of the city! The entrance is free for students and on Wednesday night it’s open until 9. The museum has three floors (the first is the entrance and the second has the gift shop) and it’s easy to visit. If you want to learn more about Utah and its mountains this is the place!
Kassidy Kimball Clark
Worth the visit!
Life-size bone structures & fossil displays truly put into perspective the diversity of all life forms.
The underwater dinosaur exhibit was my husband's fav.
We don't have kids yet, but would be such a fun & educational activity if we did!
Rachel Helling
I went for the new exhibit about color, but stayed for the incredible dinosaur exhibit. It is definitely the largest part of the museum, and it is breathtaking. It was fun to experience the whole museum, too. I recommend starting at the top floor and working your way down. The top floor balcony has an amazing view of the entire valley, too!
Peter Bagwell
The amount of information about Utah geology and the history of dinosaurs is incredible. The exhibits are interactive and beautifully put together. You could easily spend an entire day going through the multiple levels of the museum. This was our second time here and the museum can be seen within an hour or a full day. Very unique architecture and history.
ned
I could’ve spent all day here. There are so many exhibits that the museum offers. Their biggest exhibit is probably the dino fossils and the way they have it setup is amazing.
Their exhibits really tell the story of Utah from the very beginning all the way to the present.
Gabriel Westergreen
This place was amazing we spent about 4 hours here without realizing it until security had to kick us out! There are lots of displays and things to see and do here, especially if you have kids because there are lots of displays that are hands on and kid friendly with plenty of museum staff on hand to help explain as well! Overall I highly recommend visiting if you are visiting salt lake city.
Jesse Batton
This place has a lot of exhibits and they're all very high quality. You can't bring any food in though so don't come hungry. This place also has an awesome view. Great place to view sunsets
USA is a Constitutional Federal Republic
I love dinosaurs 🦖🦕, so just that exhibit was enough for me. There are also exhibits featuring Native Americans and Living Things.
The special Egypt exhibit was interesting, but the lighting made it hard to read at some of the displays. But the mummy display was pretty amazing.
Mr. Unslackable
Visiting this natural history Museum in Utah brought back many memories of when I was a child and reminded me of the Museum of natural history in New York City. This museum was jam-packed with all types of prehistoric fossils, and I love the overall layout of this venue.
Chalyce Bland
Stunningly beautiful building & displays. The setting could not be more ideal for a Natural History Museum - the panoramic views of Salt Lake City, the mountains, & the valley really serve to underscore the grandeur and scope of the geologically story. Thoughtful details like a child-friendly room & interactive exhibits made this a location that our whole family - ages 0 to 70 - could enjoy. Well done!
Mariana Escobar
The Angkor Exhibit is a well worth investment and time, whether you are a history veteran or know nothing about it. Even if you haven't heard about it before, you will enjoy it and feel like you've learned so much after. I visited the museum for the first time and I couldn't be happier after my first visit, the exhibition was not only interesting fore (a self described history nerd) but it was also engaging for my friend who's not a fan of museums and even for my 15 month old baby, who loved all the interactive activities and pointing at all the sculptures (see the video for her playing with one of the activities). The exhibition setting goes from the beginning of the empire, to heist, decline, and then modern day Cambodia and the Khmer rouge to remind us how important past cultures and preservation are. There's plenty of build your own temple/palace Lego style game for the kids too. At the end, I bought a date night box so I could share the experience with my husband. Great job NHMU! I eagerly await for your next exhibition!

So many great things to learn for all ages. It's a refreshingly great place to take young children. The exhibits kept them interested and engaged.

Wow! Don't miss this! My mother was an archeologist, so I grew up going to a lot of natural history museums. This one was so well put together! They have a gorgeous patio on the 5th floor so you can take pictures of downtown SLC, and the mountains. They have native american history at the top in a creative circular pattern with videos. Then on the 4th floor you have natural science, biology. My favorite on that floor was the human evolution skulls which you could view, touch and read about. So cool. Then you walk down and see some really cool dinosaur skeletons, walking and weaving between them. Their gift shop was super fun and their sitting area has a beautiful view of the mountains. Don't miss this, it's worth the Uber or bus ride and walk up.

Great place for kids and adults. Lots of activities to do through out the museum. Some of the things there are outdated and need to be updated. This does not take away from anything. Do wish it was a little cheaper, so be prepared to pay a bit of a price (20+ for adults). Our favorite was the water activities.

A Billion Years Of History!
This was the highlight of my SLC trip! The dinosaur exhibit was definitely the best part of the museum. As a child I've always wanted to see dinosaur bones but being from Ohio there's nothing that even compares.
It was really enjoyedable to see the exhibit on the Temple Of Angkor. What made this exhibit even more special for me is because it reminded me of the time I was last in Cambodia where I made alot of amazing memories.
Overall I would say this one of the best museums I have ever been to and would love to come back.
If your considering on what places to see in SLC I highly recommended to put this at the top.
Alexander Carbon
Love this museum for a variety of reasons, having visited 4-5 times. Note: a special exhibit is added seasonally or bi-annually, dependent upon events and museum agenda. The most recent special exhibit is ‘Egypt: The Time of Pharaohs’. This exhibit displays many interesting pieces extracted from Egyptian historical sites, including mummified relics! The entire museum is structurally unique, featuring open decks, cement casted floors and stairs, and a true copper exterior side which shines brightly whilst reflecting an evening sunset across Utah’s vast western mountain range. The upper deck provides an incredible panoramic view and displays a functioning weather station (see included photo). You will find the layout to be as if walking through time in layers- from the bottom floor exhibiting prehistoric to the top floor displaying most recent human evolution. Utah’s NHM also provides many hands-on interactive presentations for children and adults, alongside a cafe and the ever-present gift shop. There is so much to explore, one could spend an entire day learning. See for yourself!

Beautiful museum, may not have tons of stuff like other ones but there are good items on display.
Leans a BIT towards adult side than children with all the description and items on display but saw plenty of young ones having a fun time.
Very clean and orderly.
On weekends, bring food with you because cafe closes.
Went to this museum when Egyptian items were on display. Superb stuff.
The architecture of this place is also worth visiting.
Very close to red butte gardens so you can plan a whole day trip around this place.
Moodicus Maximus
Beautiful museum but for all the exhibits they have that are interactive. Without any exaggerating they have absolutely no hand sanitizer stations filled. On any floors. It's 2022 and they are not health conscious at all.
Brian Yang
In addition to Utah's minerals and dinosaur fossils, they also offer the Egyptian exhibition while we visit. An excellent museum you don't want to miss.
Kerron Montgomery
We always love going to the natural History museum of Utah! This is one of our favorite places and the exhibits that come through here are always pretty good. Even though we've been many times, the wall of triceratops skulls never gets old! Who knew there were so many different types of triceratops!? This last time we went, there was an exhibit on the time of the Pharaohs in Egypt. It was very interesting and had a lot of fun artifacts and even a real mummy!
Fred Sanchez
The museum was great and located in a great area in the hills. Beautiful views and so much natural and Indian history here. $20 per person or free for 5 people if military!!!
Thea Jackson
Overall a good museum for the entire family, with plenty of interactive displays for kids such as an area where kids can brush sand off bones, a display that illustrated the way the sediment gets stuck in grasslands, a display where you build a building to see the level of damage of simulated earthquakes, and a water and sand formation station to play with representing the way land moves with erosion.
The biggest drawback was the way over the top push for the scientifically unproven theory of evolution, for example one display said that evolution was proven by a dinosaur that had teeth for eating meat, but also had teeth for chewing plant matter, no where on the display did it mention that this particular dinosaur was an omnivore, instead the display said "These two descendants of meat-eaters have features we expect to see in plant-eaters. Look for two stages of evolution toward a plant-based diet. One step along the way is Falcarius, with leaf-shaped teeth that could shred plants. But Nothronychus specialized further, with a long neck, wide hips, and a big gut to handle fiber."
The other drawback was the admission price, given the fact this museum has plenty of donors and tax dollars that contribute to this museum. A suggested ticket price should be $7-$12, for the displays within the museum.
Elise Longnecker
I love this museum! Their permanent collection is wonderful, with enchanting offerings for all ages. The temporary exhibits are always intriguing too. I love how much this museum imbues the space with a sense of place here in Utah and all the community work the folks here do! One of my favorite places to visit in the city, especially to bring tourists and kids.
Sonny Nguyen
Beautiful architecture with amazing exhibits. The dinosaur exhibit was my favorite. Friendly staff and easy parking also make for a great experience.
Stacy David
Great exhibits lots of interactive displays. We used the audio tour which was only an extra 3 dollars. Had so much extra information on numerous display. Well Worth the money. Everything was clean and organized and staff were very helpful and friendly. Great museum!
Jacob Pierce
Taken care of place! Alot of cool stuff for all ages. Some big big dinosaurs. Went for the Egyptian exhibit and was pretty awesome.
Ricky Kairos
Went by myself on a weekday morning, which wouldn't be my first recommendation, but still had a good time. Loved the projection globe showing the continents move through time. Took about 3 hours to read 85% of the signage
Corey Durham
Best museum I have ever been too! Very well cleaned and maintained. Amazing views with amazing things to see and do.

What’s a beautiful day to visit A Jurassic Park Museum. Lucky, we also ran into a BUG festival and a BEE!
Kelly Gee
It was free for us because we have a reciprocal membership. The dinos were AWESOME! Interesting displays that we haven't seen in other places. Nice museum!
Sheldon Bradshaw
Great place for a date or for younger kids that like to learn. Their gems and butterflies are just beautiful, and anyone interested in dinosaurs would love their dinosaur skeleton display. For the adults that can appreciate it they got exhibits on Utah's native Americans and a section on Egypt. I just wish my camera was better to show y'all what it looks like.
Timmy Chaves
Greatest Time Ever !!! Must Do While In Utah, The Whole Set Up Of The Museum is AMAZING !! The Allosaurus exhibit was my favorite 🦖 Have a good time with some good hours to explore and read everything ✌🏻 Pura Vida
L. Fong
Lots to see. Great exhibits. Great place to take the family. Has exhibits on geology, archeology, geography, gems, minerals & many other science related subjects. Real live Paleolithic lab where dinosaur bones & fossils are studied. Lots of dinosaur bones & other fossils on display. Interactive exhibits & different events to see. Make sure to take a map in order to find all the different exhibits.
Rene' Chandler
This museum was great! Everyone was gracious and professional. We had a group from 6 months to 65 and everyone enjoyed the exhibits. There are many interactive exhibits as well. Make sure to bring your military id.
Teresa Gildersleeve
Wish I had brought a little. What a wonderful place for learning. Amazing museum! We learned a lot!!

Very impressive dinosaur exhibits. Large pre Colombian native exhibit. The building is spectacular
