Reviews of The Grotto
Aiman Al Khachi (Chu)
Ever since my relationship with my partner, we decided to make it an annual activity to visit a place that has fun and unique seasonal and festive lighting. This year it was The Grotto and I personally have never been here before. Expect the place to be religious and holy with a lot of unique and beautiful things to look at from natural art to hand made art. During our visit, we were able to catch a choir singing which was very pleasant to listen to and indulge in. There is an entry fee which costs $18 per person. Plenty of parking spaces but also plenty of people. Definitely something to experience at least once.
David Sheldon
Christmas lights review. Bought tickets online for $14 per adult and $8 per child with a service charge of $10. So family of five was about $75 total. Got there a little before 5pm and was able to park in the lot there versus the packed out roads that neighbor the place. There was a line at the time but went quickly. Noticed the line was gone as we left after about an hour. The lights and grounds are beautiful. The facilities are easy to navigate. Was able to enjoy a children's choir and some carolers. Saw folks enjoying hot cocoa that can be purchased there. Overall just gorgeous and easy to navigate. Was a smaller light show than some others around and a little on the spendy side for what took less than an hour. Would recommend.

Very nice. The ambiance inside is serene.
The surrounding area does not reflect what you will find here.
The garden itself is well maintained with a duck and squirrels but also some of the loveliest flowers and bushes. There were bench's and two ponds.
My family enjoyed it. We make everything funny, so we had inside joke fun. Might be nice to take a friend. You definitely want to pray if you're into it.

This was a surprise recommendation from a travel bog & I am glad that I checked it out.
The Grotto is a quiet, green and peaceful space! There are two levels - lower & upper. To get to the upper levels, there is an admission fee of ~10$ per adult. You can purchase them at the visitor center or the gift shop. They give you coins for a turnstile which allows access to an elevator that takes you to the upper level. I did not like that the only way to/from the upper level was via that 1 elevator, for the public that is.The upper level is essentially the space at the top of the hill. Mind you, the place is not too big. Expect to spend ~20-40 minutes here.
I liked the meditation building which is perched on a cliff, facing the valley in the north, yielding views of blue skies & St Helens on a clear day. But, it wasn't much for meditation though. Apart from that, there were many panels, sculptures and marble art pieces placed along the garden path that told stories of Jesus and Joseph's sorrows & joys.I found these very interesting! There was also a very cute little chapel in the upper level. The lower level has a bigger chapel with many pews. And, it looks like they've regular mass there.
I'd recommend this place as a one time visit, at least for the view from the meditation center as well as the quiet, green space even if, like me, you're not interested in the religious services that this place offers.
David Dunn (Holistic David)
An amazing spot even if your not catholic. The garden are beautiful. The grotto is awe inspiring. The main chapel will calm your soul. The meditation rooms have phenomenal views of mt. saint helens. It doesn’t take to long to explore the whole thing. Really great for a quick afternoon jaunt. It’s with the $9 to ride up to the gardens. There are so many statues to enjoy and the air is filled with a sweet aroma. Highly recommend. Will be visiting again.

Well maintained sacred spaces, gardens, and buildings. The place was peaceful with the exception of very very loud military and passenger jet planes making a turn before landing at PDX airport and the highway nearby. Highly recommend doing a meditative prayer walk here. It was also sad to see as we were leaving the Grotto the many homeless tents right outside, I hope the Church and the Grotto are doing something to help house their neighbors.

The Grotto has easily become one of my favorite venues to photograph in Oregon. This venue is absolutely beautiful! It has incredible details inside the buildings and also in the garden. For any couple who is wanting to get married in a church, this is the best spot in Portland. Thankful for the staff is who friendly, kind and professional to work with. I look forward to working with them again!
Ariel Viana
Amazing experience. It is ran by a Catholic Church but I think this even is suited for any religion!
The price is amazing for the experience, it was BEAUTIFUL, especially the singers.
Would recommend it 100%
KatiAna Urie DuBois (Truth)
We were so excited by the descriptions... worried we wouldn't have enough time to enjoy it all... it was tiny. People weren't friendly or helpful. For the price it was not worth it. You could walk through the whole ground twice in five minutes.
The lights were beautiful. Still highly overrated and overpriced.
Miocure
The best church!! They have indoor and outdoor mass depends on the weather. They also have a candle thingy too by the grotto and a gift shop. It’s so nice to go there especially during Christmas season they have festive lights.
A.
Just lovely! We went for the lights and were pleasantly surprised. The COVID restrictions are in place for good reason, and we had no problem with complying to see such a beautiful place. Would love to come back in the day time or summer as the botanical garden is on my next Portland trip list!
Nancy Forrest
Every year I go to the Grotto for their Festival of the Lights during the holiday season. I especially enjoy the variety of choirs performing each night and the outdoor lights are beautiful!
Daniel Lazo
Overall a good experience for Christmas. They do require proof of vaccination upon entry. At the time of the visit the ticket scanner for online tickets was not working correctly, so people had to stop by the kiosk to receive paper printouts. Enjoyable with family and friends.
nick wong
It looked ok from the outside. Decided not to pay admission to go to the upper level. some of the art were real cool but not a christian so didn’t understand much. Saw a cool banana slug outside that was a real treat.
Kseniya Pfau
Good place for family time. They sing beautifully. Very impressed. Beautiful lanterns. Thank you.
neris
So peaceful, you forget you're a couple miles from downtown Portland and the airport.
The view from the upper gardens is amazing.
Trozz Finley
Love coming here to remember my mom on her birthday. 💕 Amazingly peaceful for being in the city. The upper gardens are a must! …
ann narimatsu
There is absolutely no place like this anywhere else. In half a second, you drive out of the city and next you know, you’re surrounded by trees and serenity.
I love this place to get away, have some quiet spiritual time and get a blessing or two. I’m not what you would refer to as a practicing Catholic, but I am spiritual in my own sense. There is a church on property where they conduct masses. The parking lot is not immense so I don’t know where one would park if attending a Sunday mass amongst travelers such as myself.
There is also a gift shop and a room where you can get blessed or an object blessed. My daughter got her necklace blessed.
I did not take the huge elevator up to the top of the mountain as I didn’t want to pay $10 honestly. There is enough on the grounds itself to view and many areas to pray or take in the statues.
This is a place of tranquility that I try to visit each time I’m in Oregon.
Randy Caamal
Great place for Christmas! And if you are spiritual and religious this is a great place for the catholic religion, great area great sections, and as the Christmas lights very beautiful and very popular, however gets very packed so come early but not to early that the sun is still out
Sky High
Beautiful and serene. Free and ample parking at the entrance, although weekends it can get pretty packed. You'll pass the gift center as you walk in, and follow the path until you reach the grotto and outdoor mass venue. Here you'll find the visitor's center, where you can purchase your tickets ($5 per person) to the upper garden, clean restrooms and a small theatre that shows a movie about the history of the Grotto. There's a small cathedral with beautifully painted murals, so don't skip going inside. Bring a few coins to make a wish in the well, before heading the upper garden.
On the second level, you'll find a gorgeously constructed meditation room with a statue of the Mother Mary and Jesus. It boasts stunning skyline views of the city and is a great place to sit and reflect for a few moments before moving on. The garden grounds are well laid out with arrows pointing you in the right direction. If you're afraid of getting lost, you can always grab a map from the visitor's center. Take your time and enjoy the sanctuary. You'll most likely spend 1-2 hours here.
JJ Herman
I love going to The Grotto. I recommend it to people who are looking for a nice walk and quiet time in nature. The bottom part is busier with people walking, taking pictures, praying or shopping. The upper gardens are great for a more quiet and peaceful time or just walking around. It's not too much of a walk, maybe 20 minutes. The meditation chapel is beautiful but it was very warm in their due to all the glass.
Kenneth Macdonald
Such a beautiful place. So peaceful and nice. I love the holiday displays.
Julia Hann
One of my favorite places in Portland. You get there and immediately feel like you are somewhere far and serene. You pay to have access to the upper level and it’s worth it (approx $10 per person). I especially like the meditation space and the different stations with various countries’ rendition of the Virgin Mary. It’s a well maintained peaceful sanctuary well worth a visit.
Arash D
Garden is so nice. The Grotto is something I ve never seen before so that was interesting for me.
Even if you are not christian it worth to spend some times there n enjoy all flowers n trees.
Its 10$ to take elevator to go to upper dock. Although its little bit expensive for elevator but garden is nice n peaceful to make it worth.
They are good plenty of parking there as well.
All people are super nice n helpful
Daja Phillips
Lovely grove of shady old growth trees (over 100 years old!) and paved paths for walking and contemplation. 3 Masses a day are now offered. The bottom level is dog-welcoming. A great place to picnic too!
Hoang Chau
It was quiet & peaceful place. We came in the afternoon on a weekday so it was empty. It took us over an hour to finish checking out the entire place. There's less than $2 for the admission fee per person if you'd want go to the top. I'd recommend to check it out. Taking a stroll in green nature. Plenty of parking. There are restrooms available.
Pam Adrian
One of the most beautiful and peaceful places we have ever visited.
AndSoven2
This is like the most beautiful peaceful place that I have been. Every time I come here the sense of peace and holy in this place just perfect. If you believe in faith and the catholic church and you sense the goodness of this paradise. Check it out and you might find the peace that your looking for.
Bella Override
First year seeing the festival lights and it was amazing!
Ratish KP
one of my favorite places on earth. In sorrow or happiness, to celebrate or to ask for help! this is one place where you feel relaxed and "connected" that someone is listening to you!
Been here many times and this was the first time during Fall as we had rare non raining fall weather in Nov!
Lots of parking, can get crowded during busy days. Lots of walking required, get your walking shoes and water! there are good restrooms at each interval if required!
There is a pathway near the parking that depicts life of Jesus and you will reach the Grotto at the end. There is also a beautiful church where you can sit and pray or just sit siltently as much as you want!
for upper floors, you will need to purchase a token in the office which is around $8-9 per adult. This is worth the trip! as you have another set of path when you reach above the grotto mountain which is much more scenic and has lots of Jesus's life moments carved in wood! This was amazing during the fall as you could see the fall colors!
lastly, you have a medidation room that gives you an overlook view of Portland the world below!
They have Christmas lighting starting end of the month, hope to come back soon!
T T
Came for Christmas lights at night, so I can't say much about the Grotto as a botanical garden. The lights were done well, and the choir concert we attended was a treat. If going and shelling out $14 per person absolutely attend a concert or two. Parking is a nightmare and the surrounding neighborhoods are all only dimly lit, careful not to hit someone or get hit.
Chris Sotraidis
Beautiful place. Went on a Sunday during service and caught a bit of it. Beautiful grounds and laid out very nicely. Not as large as I was expecting. This place is fairly busy, at least when I came, so don't expect to have a particular quietude or space to literally meditate without interruption. It's beautiful, perhaps on slower days it would be better for a quiet solo stroll. Must see.
Karan Bhansali
Very good place to spend an hour or two on a hot afternoon (because it stays pretty cool in the gardens).
Although the tickets for admission to the upper level gardens cost $8 (for an adult), it's well worth it's price - there are very good statues & sculptures in the upper gardens that depict stories of Jesus Christ & Christianity, the gardens are very well maintained and the atmosphere due to the tree cover is very cool, calm & peaceful.
I would recommend visiting this place when you're on your way to the airport after finishing your trip as it is very close to the airport.
Dominick White
Nice clean gardens with interesting art throughout. Enjoyed my time, even as a non-Christian. Spent about two hours wandering the gardens.
Papas Roadside
One of the most peaceful places I have ever experienced within a metropolitan area. Though I'm not a particularly religious person, the calm you feel while visiting the Grotto is undeniable. Highly recommend visiting this beautiful "sanctuary of peace for all peoples of the earth).
Hector Bermudez
My wife and I came here during our visit to Portland and we absolutely loved it. It served as a very peaceful visit here. It's aimed as a catholic sanctuary however you don't have to be religious to visit. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for somewhere to escape from society for a while. Plenty of parking and a cool little gift shop at the entrance.
There are tons of little sections throughout the grotto. Plenty of places to sit and mediate, pray, or just simply hanging out. It was raining when we went by so we had to hide in the church for a little while.
Our favorite part was the quiet room overlooking the airport and river. It was breathtaking. I won't forget this place. I loved it.
Melanie Beckwith
I absolutely loved it. A couple nights ago I went there for the first time, I adored the Christmas lights going in and going out. It was awesome
Lily Noonan
One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. In may, it was absolutely stunning. Worth the xtra few dollars to take the elevator up the hill and see even more stunning gardens. We stopped here on a road trip and I haven’t seen any place like this
Lesley Katherine
The Grotto in Portland, Oregon is a Catholic shrine dedicated to Mary, Our Sorrowful Mother. I have been here several times, and always enjoyed my visit. The Grotto is filled with many religious statuary in a natural, forest setting.
When you visit The Grotto you have several options: you can visit at no cost and just walk the lower grounds, visit the gift shop, and attend mass, 12pm on weekdays. I attended the mass, and it was quite beautiful. It was wonderful to see so many nuns.
In addition, you can pay $6.00 and visit the upper level, via an elevator. This contains beautiful gardens, walking trails, and much beautiful art to reflect upon. Also, there is a lovely observation room with a sweeping view of the area. I would allow at least 1 hour for the upper level.
There is free parking, restrooms, and a gift shop.
At Christmas time they have a beautiful Festival of Lights, which I highly recommend.
My recommendation would be to visit during the week, as it is less crowded.
Caroline Reed
Beautiful grounds and a serene setting. I spent a sunny day walking around and had a great time enjoying the fall foliage. Definitely a quiet place meant for reflection, and was very much worth the experience to go to the upstairs garden.
Bernadette Urbiztondo
A very serene place to be in after a stressful week. You don’t need to be Catholic to be here to do some soul searching or just plainly want a peace of mind and surrounding for a short period of time. There is an upper level you could venture to and spend some quiet time overlooking nearby area within Portland.
Sarah Terban
Unfortunately it was cold and raining, but still worth the experience. It's a beautiful place to visit whether you are religious or not. The woman we purchased our tokens from was humorous and informative. The grounds are lovingly maintained and I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the spring. You are given a map with a few walking options, it took about an hour? Unfortunately my hands were too wet and cold to unlock my phone, so I wasn't able to take more pictures of the actual grounds. It's very peaceful and the glass overlook is enclosed, heated and has comfortable chairs if you want to reflect on things.
Leo Gasper
The environment the light show the church, the choir singing. This will be a boost for anybody’s Christmas the Marion singers from Saint Mary’s are really amazing what a beautiful presentation from the teenagers in this choir and their leader. Olivia in the choir was a joy to hear and see
What enthusiasm!
Peter Carlesimo
A must see for anyone who is interested in reflection/self-reflection, meditation, contemplation or has a sense of/for the spiritual.
The single upright carved post says it all: MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH. The lower grounds are free to visit. To use the elevator to the Upper Gardens, purchase a token (which costs $8) in the gift shop.
The upper level offers incredible panoramic views and has a dedicated viewing/meditation area.
For those familiar with Mary, there are numerous chapels dedicated to her many apparitions.
The Grotto makes a perfect West Coast bookend to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. The Shrine and Chapel to Our Lady of Leche in Saint Augustine, Florida is a beautiful and serene place as well.
jamie cotton
This place was so Serene and beautiful. I like the naturistic walk through a forest with caves and religious statues. I'm not very religious, but walking through here definitely made me feel like I was walking on clouds. The upper level of The Grotto is a $6 fee or $35 for an annual pass. If I lived in the area I wouldn't mind coming here frequently just to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.
Saifu Angto
Very peaceful. Good place to walk in hot days with all the tree cover. Nice grotto, chapel, and cross station stops walking path from the parking lot. Visitor center, store, and bathroom on the ground floor.
Buy a token from visitor center to access elevator to upper ground. There is a building with commanding view northward with some seating place and very quiet.
Upper ground also has a nice winding trail with flowers, ponds, streams, chapel and monastery. You can also find restroom facility on the upper ground.
Plenty of free parking in the complex ground.
Overall very peaceful and good place to cool down on a hot day.
Aimee Miller
I'm not Catholic or religious at all but this place was so Serene and beautiful and ethereal. Upper garden is only $12 for two people (6 bucks each) . And the view from the meditation room is spectacular. Well worth it . Will definitely be back
Nate Stevens
A beautiful and peaceful space decently appreciable by non-Catholic folks, especially the remarkable modern architectural meditation room overlooking the city with a big glass view.
Admission up the elevator is $8, where most of the garden spaces lie. Stations of the Cross and an area for Mass are on the lower level, and free. Some awesome international shrines are up the elevator, in addition to the meditation space.
Alan W.
What a beautiful and tranquil place! Came here during my trip to Portland and was totally taken back by the scenery. A good size of the ground is open to the public free of charge. However, to truly enjoy this place you have to pay $6 to visit the 26 acres garden, and it is definitely worth every penny! If you are stressed or just want to unwind after a long day or week, visit The Grotto, you won't regret it!
Kellin Bonilla
This is my absolute favourite spot in Portland. It's a gem, really and truly, in every way. Tucked away off the Sandy & 82nd intersection in NE, it's a lesser known paradise of the Portland area.
At ground level, there is a gift shop, a chapel built into the side of a cliff and a quaint church for services. These services are free and open to all. For $6, you can take the elevator 100 feet up to the part of The Grotto that makes it truly special.
At the top of this cliff, is a meditation room that clings in silent repose with a lovely view on a clear day. Aside from the meditation room, there is a sprawling garden and grounds that are lovingly tended to and home to thousands of different plants, trees and flowers. Set within this environment is an array of Christian art, much of it focused on the later life of Christ and his mother Mary (to whom The Grotto is dedicated). The lovely setting is perfect for meditating on your own existence, and your place within the grander scheme of existence.
Most visitors respect the silent nature of this space, and refrain from speaking loudly or making telephone calls while atop The Grotto. Please respect the reflective nature of this place, if you visit. While it's a Catholic establishment, folks of any background can surely respect and admire the beauty of this dedication to Mother Mary and the earth which we inhabit. Dogs are not allowed in the upper gardens, so plan accordingly.
During holidays, The Grotto hosts beautiful musical events that come with raving recommendations. Though please note that these events tend to be a bit expensive.
Donna
I think I finally found peace and serenity. Beautiful walk. 8 dollar elevator ride up. Going down is free if you are up for the hike. Beautiful works of art. Chapel, gift shop, memories.
christian invictus
This is a truly peaceful place. Our family was going through a lot and we received some peace here. Thank you.
Francisco Castelo
Super cool church in the forest, as if you weren't already spiritually connected with the nature surrounding. This church is situated in the woods not in the best surrounding neighborhood, it's interesting how they selected the location with all the strip clubs and dive bars but hey. Once you park in the lot you feel like you are at another trail, but when you start walking you realize this place has a divine feel to it. I definitely think it's a good place to stop and check out even if your not Catholic or Christian.
Ro and Reese D
It’s a wonderful place to walk and in meditation. Connect to inner peace. Relax. Find god . Find spirit. Just be !
Place of many religions. Any one can come , everybody welcome !
I would love to come back
Catherine Hingson
I walked around the beautiful gardens at the Grotto in NE Portland with a family member following the graveside service for my mother. Peaceful, social distancing compliant and the perfect setting to process.
Carlette Mcfarland
I have to give it 4 star this year there was no food stands and there pretzels were not there.and they didn’t even have animals this year we go every year and this was the first for my family for us not having all the main attractions.🤷🏾♀️🎚💔🎄🎄🎄🎄 …
Olivia Covarrubias
What a beautiful sacred venue to see the true meaning of Christmas. I highly recommend coming here and taking an hour pause to see the power of positive prayer.
Warren Wagner
Isn’t at the top of the list for Portland attractions... but it should be! The Grotto is unique in the way that it connects Catholicism with nature through beautiful paths and statues. I’m not Catholic but it was still a great place to go to learn about Catholic emphases and history. Also a great place to learn a bit about the faith and it sparked the interest of some of my friends! You can see some good stuff for free like the big Mary cave, but buying the $8 ticket up the elevator is worth it, thats where most of it is!
Dylan Chapman
Beautiful and so very peaceful. I only wish I could've visited the upper gardens, but I had my doggie along.
Zachary Kopatch
This was such a beautiful and reflective place to come across in Portland. The grounds before the Grotto are beautiful and can be accessed for free, creating a pleasant walk up to the Grotto itself. If you pay a small fee in the building, you may ride the elevator up to see the rest of the grounds and sweeping views of Portland. The sclupture, art, and architecture I found to be extremely powerful and moving. The gardens accented all of this beautifully. We will definitely return here upon our next visit to Portland.

Peaceful place to visit. Lovely gardens. View from the chapel is nice. Religious or not you feel something when you walk here.
Ely Gggg
Peaceful, healing, soulful, you feel so blessed when there. Amazing time and stress free. Can't wait to go back.

The grotto is an interesting religious sanctuary for any religious or nonreligious folks who can go to for a peaceful walk to see the grounds beauty. There is a large parking lot offering free parking. Along the path walking to the decorated cave is lined with scripture and various religious statues. A favorite of mine was a small trickling waterfall which sounded very peaceful. To enter the grounds is free besides wanting to see vast views of the gorge and Colombia river is a small fee pay which you can ride the elevator to see this view. The decorated and candle lit cave is a beautiful view and very peaceful.

Lights were beautiful!
Merry Christmas everyone! God bless!
Reine
A place of serenity and beauty, manicured grounds that blend well into forest. The shrine build into the rock edifice is lovely. You don’t have to be a Christian to appreciate the majestic tranquility.
Andria Bieber Designs
Beautiful time. Lights were fun to look at, the church is gorgeous. The music playing throughout and singing was delightful. Beautiful gift shop and friendly staff.
Blake Feagin
Absolutely gorgeous. I am not Catholic but this place is full of beauty and a great place to visit for prayer and reflection. It also offers beautiful walks through well maintained gardens. Worth the visit and worth our $7.50 admission cost. If I lived in Portland this would be a weekly destination. I would love to sit in the Gardens and read. Maybe hang out with St. Francis.
Maribel Iannello
Went here on my honeymoon. Love this place.
Chris Deege
The lights are amazing . The petting zoo is great. The kids really loved it. The choirs were also fabulous as usual. The kids also like the puppet show. Very entertaining!
We saw a Mountain View choir singing and they did a fabulous job really really good! Hard to believe that it wasn't a professional choir.
Marc Marin
Beautiful place of peace and comfort. Amazing experience.
MJMS (MJMS)
I loved this place, perfect combination of natural and spirituality. The lower level is free to access however the upper level you'll have to pay to take the elevator up. There in the building built in memory of Marilyn Moyer, is the most beautiful replica of Mother Mary and Jesus. Along with the sculpture is a beautiful view of The Grotto. After visiting the rare sculpture I would walk through the houses of the saints. There are many different saints from different countries. The calming walk through nature is breath taking, strongly suggest bringing mosquito repellant! There also is a labyrinth where you would walk and follow the path and center your thoughts. Overall this spiritual area of renewal is a must for both religious and nature loving people.
Joe Dinh
This is a hidden gem in Portland. There is so much peace and serenity in this place I feel so amazed and relieved at the same time. The garden is so well taken care. The trees are so tall and green. The flowers are so beautiful. The $8 ticket basically means this whole wonderful experience is a free give away. Recommend for any Catholic or non-Catholic to come and explore.
Alaina Danae
I enjoyed going to the grotto during their lights celebration! The lights are wonderful and the walking paths were easy to follow in the dark. They also have a pretty good parking system with parking attendants. There are audios of Jesus's birth throughout the first path. The different candle and prayer stations were open for those who practice Catholicism. There also were food vendors and Christmas gift booths set up in the court yard. By far my favorite part was sitting and listening to the choirs (their is a schedule online). They also are collecting food for one of the food banks!
John Hong, MD
For $10 a person it was worth the money to see the beautiful elevated gardens. The meditation building is quite stunning. It was very peaceful
Nimet Fitzpatrick
A sanctuary in the city! If I lived here I would frequent these gardens. Beautiful, mystical...the perfect setting to quiet the mind and hear God speak through His creation. Portland, there is a treasure in your midst. 😊 …
Eric Bennett
Take in the outdoor mass in the summer. Visit the upper sanctuary for a peaceful walk and meditating of the stations. We are blessed to have this place in our great city!
Alay Shah
It is probably over rated place for me. Went there on Jan/31 - and after paying up hill tickets, ended up seeing nominal lights. Don't get me wrong, it is beautiful place for those who wants to go there. But I wouldn't go there after paying $12 per person. It's not worth.
Christine Carter
I visited during the Christmas festival of lights. I love coming every year. It's minimal and yet beautiful. The choirs are a joy to listen to and the church is stunning.
Sithat
Very nice and well kept. Diverse groups of people worship and sight see here.
arubina14
I went to the Grotto because I saw it was a Catholic park. After following the Stations of the Cross (the path was full of cobwebs so I'm guessing not very many people walk in that part of the Grotto), I walked towards the outdoor chapel. Inside the visitor center, I asked about their mass schedule and the ladies inside graciously invited me to a mass later in the evening.
I attended the most beautiful mass for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. If I lived in Portland, this is where I would attend church.
Andrew Eliquen
Has a nice Botanical Garden in the upper area of the Grotto. Must-visit for Christians who need some peace and quiet. I believe Non-Christians will also enjoy a visit to this place.
Mettie Foglio
Loved. It. Prepare to spend awhile here. Definitely pay yo go up the the upper gardens. Very tranquil. Many less people right when it opens.
Randolph Camp II
Very peaceful and tranquil the elevator to the upper part was out so couldn't go up there to visit the lower garden was really nice.
ily tian
The Grotto is a very peaceful place to visit.. If you need to think of something or even come here for leisure and learn about something about the tSaints or Jesus... this is for you and your family.. Highly recommended💖💖👌🏼🙏🏼 …

So beautiful and peaceful. Even if you're not religious come here and smell fresh air. The views are scenic.

Beautiful green place

Probably one of the most serene places I have ever been. It is so nice to just be able to relax and enjoy nature.

This is one of the greatest gems in Portland! The Upper Gardens are incredible and absolutely worth the fee. The Grotto is my favorite place to go when I need a breath of fresh air but don't want to drive far. Definitely check it out if you have never been!
herminio meneses
Such a beautiful and peaceful place. My atheist friend, of all people, had found this place online and we enjoyed it.
Tiffany Beisner
Absolutely beautiful. The landscape was lush and it was a peaceful place. The shrine was remarkable carved in the rock. Members of our travel group are religious so it was a special place for them as Christians.

Even if you're not Catholic, the grounds is a must see to experience the nature and landscape design of the Grotto and surrounding paths. It is very peaceful, quiet, and serene to walk through the paths and it is recommended to visit to reflect on yourself and life.

Jennifer Willis
What a peaceful and amazing place for reflection. The people there are welcoming and friendly. The art is amazing! I can’t wait to go back!
Aurora Martin
It is amazing. It shows different cultures all following the same religion and showcases some of their best work informs a statues shrines and little pieces here and there. The grotto is a collective immerses the sense of a Catholic history and religious circa holiness all placed into one area.
Kanoelani D
Pretty! Don’t forget to wear your walking shoes! LOTS of walking!! Cool place, but I’m not Catholic, so I’m probably not as into it as others.

What a wonderful and peaceful day. Began with outdoor Mass, weather was lovely. Walked around in the shady downstairs portion which has a stations of the cross with places for reflection. The gift shop was tasteful and not overwhelming. Would like to return and visit the upstairs garden.

The gift shop offers a wide variety of unique gifts.
Stacy Lee Ferguson
Very cool historical location 7$ adult admission for the elevator ride to the top. And the view is spectacular.
Claire Robson
We are Catholic-lite family, meaning we embrace our Catholic heritage but are not militant observers. The quiet, lush and reverant environment immediately quieted my hyper children into a spirit of reverence. I appreciated walking through the stations of the cross with my kids on Holy Thursday, and talking about Jesus death on the cross. It was perfect.
OZ KAYAK
Very unique. Very mystic cave church. Should be seen if you visit Portland.

One of my top 5 favorite places in Portland. Such an amazing space to bring all different types of people to, and they will all be impressed and awed. As a newer Portland resident it's really fantastic to come and check out such gorgeous sights and landscaping. I always recommend The Grotto to folks and I can't wait to check it out during the holiday season.
Alexandra Rosa
It’s incredibly beautiful very peaceful and even though it has a Christian leaning it feels very welcoming
Lisa Wiltrout
Reflective property to wander around. Peaceful. Most of the grounds are free to explore. Donations welcome. There is a garden you can access via an elevator that you need to pay for. Nice oasis in the middle of Portland.
Matt Kenney

Nallely Alcaraz
Beautiful gardens!! Favorite was the Virgen De Guadalupe. shrine for sure.
Rachel D.
Peaceful. I was in choir when I was a kid and we’d come here to sing carols during the Christmas season. Wonderful memories. I enjoy revisiting here once in a while now.
Deanna Wagner
Pretty gardens. They were selling holy water for $3.50, so it felt like a joke, though. I suggest taking a little time to see the main garden and statues.
Sam DeLiso
Worth a visit even if not religious. A beautiful sanctuary of trees, architecture, and iconography, including several forested trails, an awesome rock cliff with optional elevator lift to an even more scenic area above (small charge). The Grotto is always quiet and peaceful, nice for a short walk or some mediative you time. Enjoy!
Best,

What an incredible! It is definitely worth the price of admission to go up to the upper gardens. Very beautiful, very peaceful, very spiritual, and a view that is second-to-none everywhere you walk.
The stations of the Cross down below are worth the walk, and there's no admission! Lol
Scott Carey
This is not just another spiritual destination but is a place where anyone can come and reflect upon what is within and how to become a better person. Whether or not you are Catholic this is a beautiful place to visit and spend time on oneself deepening your faith.
Henry Chadwick
Really serene and beautiful place. Great little escape from the hubbub of the city.
Liz
Such a beautiful place! I love going here for the Sunday masses held outside. It feels peaceful & just uplifting. Looks even more beautiful during Christmas!!
Ian Oestreich
You have to pay $10 to visit the upper gardens, though the lower are free. As a secular tourist, this was an interesting but slightly underwhelming spot to visit as a free attraction. A beautiful sanctuary but not very large. Also there's a nice graphic novel walk that's carved in bronze relief.
Robert Couch
Peaceful, serene location. The beauty of nature and God's creation really makes one's heart sing!
Ashley Bennett
We had visited just a couple of days before I was due to give birth during the Christmas season.
It was so amazing to be surrounded by beautiful lights and lovely scenes about Christ’s birth. This mama-to-be was able to waddle around at a nice pace and drink cocoa and just find a little bit of peace before the next big chapter in our lives.
Anders Pearson
One of my favorite places in the world. Amazing and well kept garden, awesome location, beautiful church.

So peaceful and relaxing. I could have stayed there all day.
Nika Simone (wanderpus)
Visited a week after Christmas- stunning location and lovely church grounds, all marred with tacky holiday decorations. Disappointing to see natural beauty cheapened in such a way.
King Air Pilot “TravelingTT”
Find yourself needing slow down, take a relaxing stroll along the peaceful paths here and find yourself very regenerated.
Dean
Each semester, I come here prior to finals week for a bit of peace, quiet, and prayer time with the Lord. The Grotto downstairs and the main chapel are amazing, but the upper level is a true gem. With a wonderful walking path, Stations of the Cross, and various Marian grottos throughout, you can easily spend an afternoon here. The prayer chapel with the Pieta replica overlooking Portland is absolutely breathtaking. A must see!
Smith on News
Beautiful place. Nice walk great views
Carla Huaylla Castillo
This is a must see for everyone that is in Portland. It does not matter your religion, the place is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. There are gardens on the top and you have access through and elevator.

Be inspired by the grounds, the retreats, the services and the comforting, healing atmosphere. Beautiful Grotto to Our Lady. The gift shop is superb with a vast array of gifts, rosaries and all religious items. The service is wonderful and personal. There are many events to attend there.

Great place to visit with family and friends. They have good tasting food carts for certain events.

Just here to put a candle up for Hubby's recently passed grandmother. One of his few good memories of her was her introducing BBC to him and his siblings. So he put it on the bottom of the candle.
Doug Ransom
Awesome place! So much beauty and history here!
Helenore Kelenore
Hauntingly beautiful but wish you didn't have to pay to see the top of the gardens by using the elevator.
C Piltz
Went to see the Xmas lights. Incredible. Walking trails are uneven, so of you have difficulty walking be careful! Parking crew was phenomenal. Walked into the chapel and came upon a concert. What a delight!

I'm not religious, but this was a very beautiful place to visit. It's not a big place but it's also free and there's a little cute gift shop too.
Christopher Hagerman
Wonderful experience and live music. Had a lot of vendors too, coffee, pizza, etc. Very immersive overall and child friendly.
Gerardo Morales
Its an amazing place to get in touch with nature
Jamie Michaud
The online buying process does not saves you money with fees. It is a bit over priced for a family of 4.
alicia dahlen
I am baffled at anyone who can give Portlands Grotto a one star review! I will state, I am not affiliated with the Church or Catholics in general. What I do love is peaceful sanctuaries. Lovely gift shops. Trails, lights, statuary, mediation garden.. I could go on and on. Last time I went, it was four dollars to ride the elevator to the top, and see some of the most stunning views of PDX and across the river in WA. Included are more gardens, a lovely monastery a huge room where you get to just "listen".
The staff is full of sweet volunteers, and I cant think of many better or affordable options in town to find a little peace and quiet.
Edit to add: Adults $9.95 and kids $4.95 for upper level entry. Less than a movie, and they wont kick you out until closing time :)
Mary Koo
Missing this place so much and would like to visit again!!! Already visited many times. Very beautiful and peaceful place to pray and relax. Feeling all of peaceful moments in all beautiful gardens and nature in 'The Grotto' is my most favorite part. And amazing scenery of Portland from the view point on top. - From Vancouver BC Canada
Melanie R
I was super excited to see the Christmas lights it seems like a Portland thing you need to do. After fighting through all the traffic and people to get inside. I was very underwhelmed the light show was very small not worth the drive and time and fighting through people.
Karen Christie
A lovely place to visit! Please make a pit stop before you head to the airport!
Evangeline Joo
Beautiful, serene grotto and chapel. Tokens take you up via an elevator to a private upper level garden
Rick Felan
Wow, so beautiful in Late November. Come see the lights!
Igor Shkinder
Very beautiful and calm place.. worth the $5 it is to take the elevator to the top.. you get treated with amazing views and a nice, quiet garden to walk around in.
Alisha A. Pearson
The Christmas light display is smaller than I remember. Probably great for small children.
David Wiens
Beautiful serene grounds to walk through and be at peace with your thoughts.
I only wish there were more monks strolling around, dispensing smiles and tokens of monkish wisdom.
Luke Henkel
Beautiful, peaceful, a little pricey for the trip up to the top but the cathedral an absolute must. Exquisitely maintained grounds and a good gift shop!
Ricky M
A peaceful, beautiful and wonderful place!!Very quiet and clean. I love it!!!

adam kravitz
Love the serenity, grace and faith you can feel here
Andrea Wu
Came here on a weekend afternoon, not too many cars. Saw some people walking about but nothing too crazy. It's $8 to go up the elevator into more of the garden, a steep price if you ask me. Lots of trees and statues, nothing too special, but peaceful, quiet, and got a good view of the city.
Dads Camba
Very solemn please a nice Saturday vigil and Easter mass
Starling Mendoza Fernandez
I am not very religious guy but I respect those who believe in god since I believe him too, this place is great if you are looking a peaceful time, it's free of charge but if you want to go up to the gardens you must pay $7
waxknuckle bearingjuice
OH DANG! This spot is awesome , I took my mother who uses a mobility scooter and this was more accessible than the Japanese garden in Washington Park. Beautiful gardens , mostly native plants and trees wonderfully maintained and presented. Very nice views of the Columbia river gorge and My. St. Helens, Perhaps the best 10$ I've spent on an attraction here in Portland. It's also extremely easy to get to from public transit , the 12 bus stops you off almost in the parking lot.
Alan Francisco
Went to church mass on holy week holiday, didn't had the chance to go up to see the garden due to rain. Will be back in the summer
She Ash
Festival of Lights at the Grotto is a pretty colorful event. One should go at least once.

We have been here a few times and always found it a fun/entertaining place to go. In winter it is Xmas lights which are absolutely beautiful, hard to beat even for the price. In the spring time the gardens are absolutely beautiful and fun to walk around in. The parking is pretty plentiful. You could probably spend a few hours walking around but ~1 hour at least does it service.

Vicky Huang
It's not a large area. You can see many stuff about Christian. If you are a Christian, you'll like here.
Forrest Belmont
Beautiful festive setting for whole family to enjoy. Will make it a holiday staple every year!
Cody Philpot
Over 1 million lights were up this last year and boy you can tell. Absolutely a humbling experience going to the grotto in the winter with all the lights. The choir was Beautiful. The kids got to pet some animals, watch a puppet show and learn about the lord. The gift shop was filled with fairly price items. Take a trip. Its peaceful.
Jennifer Chaffee
This place is absolutely beautiful. There are trilliums absolutely everywhere, along with every other kind of beautiful flower you can think of. There is a multitude of peaceful places to sit and think, including many catholic sculptures and little ponds. When I went it was almost empty, I ran into very few people in the upper garden. The price is well worth seeing these upper gardens, as the whole grounds are well maintained and manicured to perfection. The lower trail and grotto are also beautiful and serene, and the little chapel always has it's doors open. A place of solitude and peace, for sure.
Michelle Theisen
Nice quiet stroll through gardens of shrines and statues.
Albert K
Free, beautiful, and peaceful. It was very easy to park as well. It was very serene to just sit there watching. Going here allows you to clear your mind, come to peace, and enjoy the beauty of the sanctuary.
It's also free to enter, but donations are suggested. That is much preferred over forced entry. They keep it very clean and beautiful.
Highly recommended to stop by if you're in town.
Kumiko Saito C
Such a peaceful place. Made me wanna go back there again.
Dustin Walker
Pretty neat light display. Much smaller than it seems as far as the circuit goes, however, the kids seemed to feel it was infinite anyway.
Even though I'm not particularly religious the Carol's, statues, and displays featuring jesus and other canonical figures were tasteful and well done.
Everyone was welcoming and friendly. The grotto itself a beautifully lit and wonderful view. Parking was a bit of a hassle, but only due to the influx of people.
A very beautiful oasis in the midst of a busy city. The experience was good, and full of cheer.
The only con was price... which had less to do with how much it cost, and rather how little I have... but the pictures and smiles my kids got were well worth it.
McKenna Bloomquist
One of the most peaceful and beautiful places in Portland, whether you are religious or not. Thank you for requiring vaccinations and helping keep your visitors safe and healthy.
Donna Nelson
It's a destination serenity garden. It is of the Catholic religion but not overbearing. Many find it's gardens, statues and church very calming. Free to walk main area may$7-10 to go to top for gardens. Very relaxing and great for meditating.
Kara Lehman
I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I went to the Grotto Christmas festival of lights, and it was so much more then just lights. You get to go into a chapel and listen to beautiful choirs singing. There was a petting zoo. Hot drinks. Most of all I want to see it during the day. That's my next adventure.
S T
This was a very cool place to visit during Christmas time. The light display was awesome! There was a funny puppet show the kids enjoyed and a choir was singing some Christmas hymns in the chapel. The area was not overly crowded so my experience was very nice and peaceful there with a good opportunity to reflect on the Saviour of the world. It was a great way to begin the Christmas season. It is unfortunately quite costly. Adults were 12 dollars a person and I think kids over 3 were 8 dollars.
Casey Rafter
The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Great spot to stroll at if you just wanna check out the lower level. Haven't done it yet, but you can take an ELEVATOR up the side of the cliff to a much larger space with more features above the lower grove.
Cynthia
I absolutely love this place. We walked through the trails to see the different stations and it was breathtaking. They have a souvenir shop and if you want to take the elevator to the upper gardens it costs $8.00 for adults. The lower grounds where we went were free of charge.
Kally
It's nice but nothing to go out of your way for
Tyler Seward
Place is really pretty during Christmas.
JD Southall
Incredibly serene setting for Christmas! Majestic old world feel to your visit. A must see in Portland!
Kevin Woods
I really like this location.
They have a medium sized parking lot and plenty of street parking.
Visiting this site is free but using the elevator to see all the statues at the top will cost $8.
The church at the bottom is beautiful. All the Jesus statues and plaques are beautiful. Words cannot describe this place.
The top section is huge. There are a ton of sculptures, statues, and gardens. Give yourself at least 2 hours to see everything.
Go visit!
Dreamy G
It was a beautiful, serene place to visit. I am glad I saw it. The grotto is just a nice place to sit and introspect. For $5 one can go to the gardens above. It is a nice 1-1.5 mile walk, but so nice. There are so many peaceful areas to just sit and enjoy the greenery. Of course, the religious aspect is there - but despite being a non Christian, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I would recommend it to all....just know that there are no flowers - just nicely kept green areas.
Neil Watson
We often find ourselves at the Grotto as it is such a beautiful sanctuary for peaceful meditation and reflection. Whether trying to embrace a quiet moment from a noisy world as a family or take a walk with friends in the upper gardens, The Grotto is a lovely place. If you live in Portland, definitely get the annual pass so you can access the upper gardens often with your visitors and to enjoy the beautiful Marian chapel and gardens (the Joys and Agonies of St. Joseph are my favorite as a husband and father).
Cathy Masterson
This was the most amazing experience I have ever had!!💖 …
Luai Zarour
This is a nice hidden gem in portland. There is a lower level that is free to walk around and there is an upper level that is 8 dollars per person and free for kids 5 and under. It definitely is worth going to see this. It is a serene garden with tons of different varieties of trees, shrubs and plants. There are birds chirping throughout the course and many areas that allow you to sit and relax and meditate.
M B
I came back. It's nice and I'm glad they have been keeping it up. The giftshop was great and gave me warm fuzzies along with the grotto atmosphere. The grounds are beautiful and the trails with intermintant statues are amazing. I've yet to go up the elevator to see the gardens up on top. I heard singing up there though. The historical information/pictures/relics they had to show was nice. Just a really reverent, well kept place.
Gabriela Bohnett
Finding it, alone, was providential. Visiting the Grotto of the Sorrowful Mother was one of the most spiritually enriching pilgrimages I have ever lived. Highly recommend it. A perfect place to meditate on the perfection of God’s creation.
A. Kristine
Such a magical place! I am not religious but the spiritual energy of this place is so wonderful, especially the chapel. They have a lovely garden you can pay to visit up top. Parking is slightly small.
Edward Mirzakhanian
Best place for praying and get relaxing
sLy FoX
It's beautiful... Peaceful... I go there to meditate and pray for my faithfully departed loved ones... I buy a candle or a couple... and say prayers for the sick, loved ones, loved one passed, and for health of family and friends. Also for help and guidance in times of need or during trying times for myself or family and friends.😊🙏⚘ …
Diana Daggett
Beautiful park with many opportunities for quiet meditation and prayer. That part is 5 stars. My reservation is that it is not a good place for a wheelchair as most of the paths are rock paths so the ride for the person in the wheelchair is extremely bumpy and uncomfortable. I thought it would be a nice experience for my 90 year old mother who is a devout Catholic but it was just too bumpy for her to feel a sense of peace. I wish they would seek a grant to replace the paths with smooth asphalt to make the experience more accessible.
shan clow
Christmas lights beautiful. Petting zoo super clean. The animals very calm. Chapel singing has great acoustics. The music gets you in the mood for Christmas. Easy to get around for all ages and capabilities.
RN Harmon
Beautiful, peaceful, tranquil. This was a great place to be reminded of and enjoy the beauty God has created for us in nature. Great setting to do devotions, read scripture, enjoy an event or take a nature walk.
Carl from Chicago
I would recommend this place even if you are not religious. It is a very nice park with views of the city and many beautiful trees. Very relaxing. In the winter they light up the area with seemingly millions of lights. Also great to take any elderly visitors they can see the sights.
Tim Hulen
Amazing + @ Christmas = Fan freekin tastic
Cynthia O'Brien
A beautiful, quiet place for reflection. Buy a token for the elevator to the upper gardens where there is a chapel that looks north over the city, a walking path, art, water features, and a labyrinth. We also go every year in December to enjoy the Christmas Festival of Lights and hear choirs from all over the region.
Micah Nims
The Grotto is on the north side of Rocky Butte, one of the volcanoes of the Portland area. There are two levels to it (due to the rock wall) with an elevator to the top portion. The lower section is a very serene setting with a Stations of the Cross trail through it. There is a gift shop with a great selection of Catholic literature, decorations, etc. There is a cave cut into the rock wall with a shrine with a statue of Mary and Jesus at its center. The chapel is peaceful and beautiful. You can buy tokens for the elevator to the top portion where there are more trails. I can't think of a better place to find peace and quiet and maybe a piece of heaven.
Liz Lair
We went to the festival of lights last night 12/30/21 and we’re disappointed that we were not screen for our vaccination. I was not asked for ID and he looked at my phone from a distance that it would have been impossible for him to see my vac cards. Scary… If they screen like this, certainly unsafe.
Jayashree selvan
A quiet, calm religious / relaxing spot. There's a $8 fee for the upper garden tour and an elevator to get there. Right from the parking spot till the Grotto statue you can enjoy greenery and cool air along with a peace of mind.
Sa Per
What a beautiful peaceful place to visit! A great energy and beautiful roses and butterflies everywhere when you get to the peace garden, small waterfalls, cute gift shop and a view you'll have to see for yourself! I loved it and would definitely visit again.
Martha Sanchez
Omg... this place is magical. Made me cry!! It’s peaceful and just allows you to let go of all the stresses in your life. It helped to center myself and remember to have a grateful heart. If you have someone to pray for, I highly recommend to come here, walk the garden and just be silent and meditate. Be grateful. There is mass on Sundays. There’s a 711 a block away, take water with you. There are 2 gift shops one is next to the church. Locals told me the surrounding area is not the best but the Grotto is gated and during the day, it’s perfect (they close at dusk anyway). I ate breakfast at Nectar cafe about 2 miles away. I would eat around this area and not near the grotto. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place and have been there a couple of times already. Will continue to go there when I can. People/workers are super sweet too!
E. M.
I was feeling a bit stingy when confronted with the entrance fee for the upper level, having little idea what was up there or how long I might spend viewing. But it was worth it--and the money undoubtedly goes to a good cause (if only in preserving this historic slice of PDX greenery). Beautiful and interesting place to go on a date.
John Post
This park is immaculate with all the beauties of God's creation hidden just outside of Portland.
It's paths lead to peaceful and splendid sights.
Bring an open heart and walking shoes because, while the spirit is a plenty, so are the hills and stairs. Don't worry, there's an elevator to the top of you require.
Enjoy!
Gustavo Serrano
It's a very peaceful place.
Michael Bowen
I loved the place ... First time going , so peaceful. I will definitely come back , I only really explored the top level. Next time I will do the bottom.. but all in all a great experience for me an a great learning experience
Viet Tran
"The National Sanctuary of our Sorrowful Mother. An internationally renowned Catholic sanctuary set among 62 acres of botanical gardens, offering a place of peace and quiet reflection for all people. More than 100 beautiful statues, reflection ponds, and views offer inspiration to all who visit."
Asher Adams
The view is interesting and the building where you take the elevator up (you have to pay to do it) is strangely futuristic. Not your average experience of place. Fairly large grounds to walk around and explore on with a chapel down below. Nice place to take pictures.
Tom wrangler
Beautiful lights and great singing.
Joel Maynard
A truly lovely setting for contemplation and prayer. I thoroughly enjoy taking my family there for the Festival of Lights each Christmas, which features live music every evening by local artists, choirs, and classical ensembles. An absolute must for the Holidays.
Virgil A. (Ras-Hype)
Beautiful space and serene environment.
Miranda Helm
Absolutely beautiful. As a person who is not religious, I still find peace in walking along the gorgeous landscape and looking at the detailed sculptures that depict Jesus's life. The lower level is free to walk around, and for a few bucks you can take an elevator up the top of a cliffside for an even better view. Also, 10x better than zoo lights during christmas season
Lawrence Thai
Came here during my trip to Portland and I am glad I stopped by.
There are two centers here, one sits closer to the little cave cave enclosure where they have mass and other religious-type activities and another center near the parking lot.
There are paths throughout the Grotto, one that leads towards the street to get into the Grotto and one that leads toward the cave enclosure where the main attraction it. I am not religious at all, but seeing the cave enclosure was breath-taking. It was beautiful to see the combination of such beautiful art alongside nature. There are statues and plaques that tell the story of Christ throughout the Grotto and following the path and seeing this story in chronological order was beautiful. Such a great place to visit while in Portland and definitely recommend.
There is also an elevator that takes you to the top of the hill that houses the cave. You will need to pay to get up there but I am sure it is well worth the money as it gives you a view of the enclosure from a higher perspective.

The Grotto Festival of Lights is absolutely magnificent my great aunt, mom, daughter and I have gone for the past 4years and this year it seems like they have got more brighter lights even though it was pouring down rain we all still enjoyed ourselves it's kind of a traditional thing for us now. I highly recommend going with the family
Sandra Tena
Great holiday place to go with the family. I have only been here during the Christmas light festival. The cost for admission is $12. Once inside you can walk through their gardens on the lower level. The upper level areas are all closed. The main event is the Choir performances, but there is also food vendors and a petting zoo. I'm giving 4 stars because it does get very crowded. Parking is a huge hassle, however once you're inside it isn't too bad.

This place is very peaceful and holy. Don’t forget to light your candles and offer your prayers and also visit their garden. It’s nice to walk around and just have a peaceful talk with the person you are with. Worth driving for 2 hours. ❤️
Victory Loves Company
It was a great experience, was there during Christmas and it was like being in "Avatar" the movie. Want to go back and visit in the day time for a more spiritual visit. Don't expect anything for free there, bathrooms were clean and service was great, attendants were patient and volunteers were pleasant.

Come to Portland last month and heard about the Grotto. My hotel locates just 10 minutes walk to it. This place is truly amazing, the minute you walk into the gate, you smell fresh air, flowers, birds singing...everything is just so so green and beautiful. You must take the elevator to the top, it is a breathtaking view. The place was well kept, it is so peaceful, relaxing..I definitely will come back here again.
Russell Townsend
This is the most wonderful , prayerful place we have been to. The chapel, the outdoor stations of the cross, the the upper garden and meditation center provide a variety of spiritual exercises. We are going back for Mass and more reflection.
Lynette Kostechka
So very peaceful and beautiful. You really feel one with nature and with God. A definite "must-see" You will want to return. People you meet are so friendly too! My Grandsons love to go to Mass on Sunday during the summer.
Emily Liu
I can't speak for its routine business, but the place hosts a Christmas event every year with night lights and local choirs singing in a beautifully-sounding church.
As someone who got to sing there, it could be worth attending if you enjoy choral music in such a setting (religion and Christmas) although aside from music and lights there's not much for the teen crowd. There is an entrance fee and donations go to charity purposes.
Saiorse Caldwell
Such a beautiful, absolutely tranquil place to restore your inner peace. Everyone I have encountered here was polite, from staff to visitors. The wildlife an views are amazing, and the history and art well worth the visit. One of the very few bronze cast replicas of Michaelangelo's Pieta can be found here and is a sight to behold, among many other amazing works in art and architecture.
The Beautifulogist
One of the most beautiful places I've been visiting.
Jeffrey Braunschweig
Cool Christmas light display and great food and drinks.
Rosie Lee
With GPS easy to locate. Appears sufficient free parking with handicap parking. Free to wander lower grotto. Fee connected to accessing upper Grotto but well worth it. This is a spiritual location - be respectful. Leave pets at home & turn cell phones low/off. Non-professional pictures may be taken. Check website for specifics on professional photography / graphers. Weddings and a few other types of events can be held there. They have a website so check for possible upcoming events especially around holidays. They have a gift shop. Restrooms. Benches. Some guided tours based on day and times.
Wayne Chin
Such a blessed and sacred place. I felt like all my prayers were heard and answered. Thanks be to God!
Nicholas Prante
Unbiased opinion: I am a believer but respect dearly mother earth and that place should be kept sacred. Wonderful staff and great ambience with music being played around, more areas too. Cool gift shop with Holy items that are. 😊 …
Sharlene C
Felt the vibe and energy once entering. The meditation center was misting amazing. I meditate on the regular but what I felt meditating therw was like no other experience I ever felt. Beautiful statues, praying, meditation all along natural beauty
Scout Barber
Went for the Christmas lights - stayed for the caroling. Parking was full but the lot attendants were attentive and helpful. Being an atheist, I liked that they didn't only do religious stuff, even though its a religious place. Cute puppet show ;D
Karen P
The Grotto is such a cool and peaceful place. The Festival of Lights at Christmas time is really pretty, and the music then is top notch! They have live puppet shows, and real nativity type animals to visit with. There is food and drink available, restrooms, and a gift shop. Go early to find parking around Christmas. There is no fee to park.
Andrew Fuhriman
Nice walking trail in Portland with plenty of parking and paved trails. Really enjoyed the cool landscape and all the shade, especially on a warmer day. Wasn't aware it was such a religious park/walking trail, but the nature part of the walk was nice.
Terry McKinnon
What a beautiful place! Very quiet. A nice respite from your troubles.
Sarah Winters
The Grotto's Festival of Lights is awesome! To the person that complained there wasn't enough lights, it's a lot more than just a few strands of lights. There's a whole walkway with huge trees, with every branch wrapped in hundreds of lights. I was very impressed. The Grotto is a spiritual and meditative retreat. Gaudy, flashy light displays would not have been appropriate through out the entire gardens. Another major part of the event is the choral festival, which was lovely! The $10 entrance fee was less than they charge at the ZooLights and I feel was well worth the experience. And $2 for a cup of hot chocolate was a decent price, especially considering it was all a fundraiser. Some people are just never happy and will always have something to complain about. Very sad.
Rhoxy Mendoza
This place is huge. Must see and peaceful
Eli PDX
You know what would be great? Wheelchair accessible candles. My mother visited this site a couple of times. Once at Christmas and again during Spring. She wanted to light candles for my reccently passed Dad and my brother. The whole process was frustrating. First we pushed her to where we thought she could get to them. Nope. Then, we find out you have to go back to the store. After we pushed her all the way up.... and nobody was willing to show us an accessible way or help. It was okay and beautiful. But beware if you have mobility issues.
Mimi
This is a wonderfully peaceful place. The upper gardens are full of beautiful artwork from different cultures and traditions. A great way to spend time in prayer and reflection.
Kristin Bonn
The Grotto is a wonderful place, and is an amazing area for meditation and worship. After stepping out of the elevator, it's like you've entered another world. Birds in the trees, lush forests. The whole atmosphere feels holy. Our only complaint was that we had trouble finding the exit, so we had to climb over the entrance. Truly is a hidden gem.
Alicia Jakeman
I'm not Catholic, but I loved the Grotto. I went in January so it probably wasn't at its finest and it was still beautiful and peaceful and interesting. I feel uncomfortable tiring churches where people are worshipping, so I only stepped into the back of the chapel, but taking the elevator up to the gardens is absolutely worth it.
Jenn Turner
The Grotto was so much more than I ever expected...everything about the place moved me. The gardens up top, shrines of Mary from other countries, etc...the mass outside was the cherry on top. Loved it and plan to return one day soon. This trip was a true blessing all around.
Yvonne Gurule
The Christmas lights are amazing! My 1 yr. old daughter & I went... We had so much fun
Daniel
Very peaceful and serene. Love the low sunshine and the little paths that make the visits very enjoyable visit even if you're not that religious. A little bit far off from the city and relying on public transport is not recommended.
khayla hollen
For me personally, the petting zoo was the absolute best part. Of course theres drinks and some food, obviously the prices are raised so i recommend eating before.
It was very beautiful and warmer than you'd expect. The parking attendants really didnt do much and were actually confusing, but other than that it was a good time. Also its dog friendly
Deanna Forseth
This place is my Mecca. Anytime I need to wrap myself in Gods love and Mother Natures beauty, I head to the Grotto. god bless all who maintain and work here.
Katrina M
Absolutely beautiful, hidden gem.
Praveen Pious
A wonderful catholic sanctuary. We attended the Sunday mass. The ambience and the views were simply breathtaking. Make it a point to purchase the ticket so that you can take the elevator up the rock terrain. I found the prices posted for the items in the local store to be a bit towards the expensive side.
Dan A
It's pretty, but not worth the price of admission to me. Kept waiting for something really awe inspiring and it just never came. It's a pretty walk through trees and flowers, etc., but you could probably find a park in the area and get the same experience for free.
Brian Farris
A wonderful place to meditate and contemplate life. I spent a half hour with the bronze replica of Michelangelo's Pieta, before taking a slow stroll through the gardens and stations.
Claire Chang
A beautiful religious place to visit. You can come here to pray and enjoy a peaceful time. Lots of greenery and beautiful view. There is famous Christmas lighting during holiday seasons, great to bring family to visit.
Breanna Grover
Beautiful place 12$ to get in for the lights
Josefina Harry
What a great time we always have at Grotto! Is a beautiful tradition my husband and I have since we were dating. ♡
Every year after Christmas we go there to celebrate and enjoy the carols in the chapel. Remarkable moments! ♡
Carlos Detres
Great place to meditate.
Autumn Azzaro
The statues in the Upper Gardens are beautiful, and the garden itself is quiet and serene. Make sure that you check out the church before heading up in the elevator--in it is a beautiful stained glass window that is breath-taking in the sunlight
Kyan Hartley
There are endless places in Portland that envoke words like "beautiful," "awe-inspiring," "must-visit." The Grotto is certainly one of these places, but seems to be a well-kept secret, perhaps due to its proximity from city center. Although it's just a quick 15-minute drive from the heart of downtown, it doesn't pull in the same amount of visitors as places like the Japanese Gardens.
That is largely why I adore the Grotto. It's one of the most tranquil places in the city limits. 62 acres of manicured landscape, it's officially a Catholic shrine. Being a non-religious person myself, I have always adored the beauty of Catholic spaces.
This is an ideal place to go for some respite from the city.
*note* If you don't pay the fee to go the upper portion of this, you will truly miss out! That's where the worthwhile places are.
Aside from the statues and paths, check out these areas:
- Meditation Center (quiet room on the side of a cliff with huge floor-to-ceiling windows looking out where you can see for miles on a clear day)
- The Monastery
- Meditative labyrinth walk (twisting/turning circular walk that takes several minutes to walk through)
Nikolas Kravig
Very peaceful place. Love all the architecture and statues. Highly recommend to do the upper gardens. Beautiful views and worth the money. Staff was very friendly.
Lanette
I didn't get to wander much as it was cold and rainy, but it was so beautiful!!!
I definitely want to go back so I can explore more. Such a serene place in the middle of a bad neighborhood.
TJ Hansen
Very beautiful to walk through, a quiet oasis in a busy town.
Esther Selvam
Awesome place. Those searching for peace have to spend some time here. Really relaxing
Elizabeth Brassell
Such a serene, lovely environment. The Perfect inner city place to take an afternoon stroll and enjoy nature. The book store is nice and the staff are very helpful. We are here often. ❤
Cris Delancy
The Grotto is so beautiful. They have beautiful lights at night. Come out with your family and come check it out. Haven't saw a beautiful catholic church like this one. One of the must see in Portland if your visiting or just moved here. :)
Andrea Valentine
If you are looking for a peaceful place away from the city in the city this is it. There is magic in praying, meditating, reflecting outdoors in the woods in beautiful scenery surrendered with trees, flowers, park, small ponds. There is some magic here.
Suzanne M Davis
The Grotto is just amazing. The Stations of the cross are beautiful. The gift shop has fantastic Rosaries, Statues, Jewelry, whatever you could want. Prices, to me are fair to expensive.
Mass started at 4 with lots of people. The only thing I missed was the Monks singing. That, I wanted to hear.
Juan Manuel Rodriguez Jr
I enjoyed the 10 am mass walk around before and after. Raining all day.
Vicki Wilson
Always feels good to show up to places with no expectations. The Grotto, such a gem in the middle of town. I don't want to spoil your experience. If you need a place to go, relax, pray, take beautiful photos and find some peace. I recommend the Grotto; especially if you go early in the morning before it gets busier. Bring a candle if you like to place it with the rest of the candles at the main alter. Or you can purchase one at the Grotto shop. Happy Travels !
CJ Rogers
Peaceful, spiritual, relaxing, serene and calm....
Gary Figueroa
The Chrissy event is very worthwhile. Gorgeous setting that is well maintained. Events presented in the chapel are notable. Very beautiful interior reflecting well the Catholic faith. Great family experience too.
Rhiannon D'Ottaviano
Beautiful park hidden in the city of Portland . Easy (free) parking and trails to walk around .
T Olson
Beautiful experience. Though some lights were out and the historic green and red tree in front of the chapel has been redone with boring icicle lights, most of which were barely visible or half out.
Surya Raj Joshi
Peaceful place to be. Forest and park is well looked after. Open air prayers place is nice. It cost to go up to the park by elevat? or. Very well looked after garden up the hill with clean restroom and modern meditation hall ( which is also a place frou where you have great view of columbia river, airport and mt. St. Helens)
DLR CBR
Unwind, enjoy the beauty of nature and the solitude of worship respected by almost all who visit here. Take the elevator up to the Monastic level and visit the chapel and the grounds. Your mind and your spirit needs this. Take someone you care for and share. This can't be found in very many places in America.
Mr. Machiavelli
Always a tranquil place to visit. Dint forget to check out their lights during Xmas time.
Prashama Sandy B
Gorgeous lights!!! Amazing music!! Fun and delicious savory and sweet waffles (even Gluten Free and Vegan options)! Very affordable and coupons available on line.
Simon
It's not terrible, but way over hyped. Also, the price is pretty high for the top park of the park, when the bottom is nicer.
I would recommend just skipping the grotto and going to a different park, if you're looking for nature.
jonathan antonucci
A must for a Christian in the area. Definitely stop by the chapel and the outdoor stations of the cross!
Paul Haushalter
Such a nice and clean place. The view of the city is amazing. Such a peaceful and quite preserved peace of history. Elevator ride to the mountain top made it convenient any easy for anyone to get to.
Laura R
Very beautiful area in the spring!
Trent Nguyen
Meditation.. Mass... Confession..giftshop..can't ask for a better setting for personal reflection...and prayers. The elevator ( buy your token) will bring you up to 22 acres of garden with a variety of plants and flowers.
Jennifer Campisi
This place is amazing. Was in Portland for work and decided to check this out. WONDERFUL place. Highly recommend for any spiritual or meditative person or someone who just wants to see some great nature and views. Was not busy at all on a sunny spring Saturday afternoon.
Ben Menesini
The word "serene" comes to mind. The Grotto has a number of trails to stroll through, a stone labyrinth, a monastery, gardens, and large and quiet meditation room. There's a $5 fee to take the elevator to the gardens. We had a wonderful afternoon here.
Nicci Schu
Beautiful place!! Definitely worth $7.00 to go to the top and enjoy the peaceful gardens and ponds above! The Grotto cave itself is exquisite and simply a beautiful site to see!! This is a MUST go!!!
Karla A.
The most beautiful place for a catholic, It has nature, family, and God. All three things of life in one! You won't regret a bit!❤️❤️
Ken Welker
The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights is $11 per person, perhaps more than some light displays. However, there are many concerts, inside the church and outside; the one we attended inside made it well worth the cost. There's a mix of secular and religious themes in the lighting.
Ted Wittman
Very lovely place the stroll through no matter your faith. Highly recommended coming during the down hours and relaxing in the chapel for an hour. Very relaxing and meditative experience!
Mark Uy
The Grotto is a solemn place that you can visit no matter what religious belief you have. It is a place of prayer for anyone and everyone. There's handicapped parking and the entire Grotto is handicapped accessible. There is an elevator fee to go to the upper level and they also have an annual pass to those who want to come regularly.
Megan Murphy Ruckman
It was our first time going with little kids. There was a puppet show, animals to pet, lots of Christmas lights, and choirs singing. I wish the kids would have sat in one place a little longer to hear more singing, but otherwise we had fun.
Shawn and Tjuin Tay
Beautiful church surrounded by a very peaceful park. Worth going just to walk the grounds. Gets very busy at Sunday mass times but other than that it's very quiet.
Dorothy Keeler
I can not say enough about this wonderful place...
...I was born in Portland but did not really live there till the 1965/66 and live in Portland and went to the Grotto often..
before i left in the 1945 time frame my mom would take me there and she would just enjoy...
....and guest from out of town who were not Catholic was please with the quiet and peace.
Visit if you can....
Nne Oma
The first time I stepped my foot here at the grotto, I was amazed; it is a beautiful place for meditation and prayer. I like the chapel of Blessed Mother Mary of Jesus and the prayer labyrinth. 5 star.
Charmaine Lowther
The Festival of the Lights is an annual event for my dear friend, my daughter and I. We've gone for almost 30 years and every year they have a more spectacular light show. This truly starts the Christmas season for me!
Mobile-Video Team
Finding a place for quietness and solitude, a rest from the busy life, here is the best place inside Portland City, with a great view over Columbia and a peaceful walk in the forest around gardens of flowers near a joyful creek following the story of the amazing visit that The Creator had with the people
Ronnie
I almost didn't stop because the pictures don't do it any justice. Trust me it's worth the stop! Beautiful scenery at the top of the mountain. Also it says you have to buy a ticket but I didn't and just went right up lol. Great picture taking spot.
Jesus Leon
Love it beautiful peaceful place. Great for a walk and scenery pictures, and of course if you are Catholic a very spiritual place.
vas balan
Very beautiful but parking can be a bit difficult
G
I can’t believe it only took me 15 years to visit this place. It’s the most serene place I’ve ever been. People travel across to globe to see a place like this. I said some prayers and made peace. Still haven’t won the lotto yet though. A+
Jen L
Beautiful and extremely peaceful. Over 60 acres of gardens with soothing water features, stunning plant life and lovely statues.
M Johnson
I really like this place. It is so lush and peaceful with so many religious statues, stations of the cross, and the beautiful Servite Friary. A great place to relax, reflect, pray and attend mass.
candycrystall
It is so peaceful here and beautiful. You can spend hours here and still feel like you can stay longer. They have a great Catholic gift shop here too!
phil moist
lovely hidden gem on the northeast side. a complete getaway from the traffic, airport, and general hustle and bustle of modern life. i'm not even especially religious and found the grotto to be serene and beautiful. regardless of your feelings regarding the papacy, check this place out!
Jacqueline Ramirez
Is a gem in the middle of the city. I was there during spring. The weather was perfect. It was a wonderful place if you want to connect with yourself. Extremely peaceful and beautiful.
Laura Braunschweig
The displays are beautiful. The coffee stand makes great coffees. The Waffle sandwich stand was so good that we didn't need to eat dinner.
Johnna Whitefoot
Great place to pray & find peace within the busy city. Lots of memories here as a girl with my grandma. Actually I would love to be married in the chapel some day❤️
Renee Button
So nice to walk through the Festival of Light pathways sipping hot chocolate, and stop a few times for music in the chapel.
What a wonderful Christmas tradition!
Joseph F
Beautiful and holy. A must-see for spiritual people of any persuasion.
Sean Flores
So serene here, was amazing, you should definitely check it out.
Donovan Andrews
Very enchanting! Music, food and beautiful scenery. We go every year and there seemed to be more lights this time which was a good surprise.
Carrie Vereen
Every year we come see the Christmas lights. Everyone on the grounds, such sweet and kind people. But when we went into the gift shop, complete different story. I am a disabled mom with two small children. From the time we walked into the gift shop we were watched heavily and followed by a guy working there. He started askg me, "Are things okay over here?" Then asked me what I was "looking for" and not in a help way, it was in an inconvenience way. As if we were criminals. Again, disabled mom, 2 sm kids, sm frame, I am not at all intimidating. We choose a couple sm. sovinerrs. When we went up to the register, the guy that was watching me and a lady were there. And they had really mean look on their faces and were talking in down manner. My 3 yr. old asked me why they were so mean. I had to explain the difference between a Christian and a catholic to her. Christians have Jesus in their heart and have a personal relationship with Him. Catholics have to pray to many people and obey the pope. And they just aren't that used to being around children. We have some catholic friends including 3 nuns, all of them are very kind I don't know what was going on with these two people. Maybe it's a race thing since our family is not white. But it was an unfortunate experience for our family.
Jennifer Draper
This place is sooo peaceful & beautiful!! I love it, totally worth going if you haven't yet!!
Randy Lundgren
Beautiful and peaceful. A Portland must see.

Beautiful relaxing place to visit whether you're religious or not. The first 'floor' is free to walk even with your dog which is nice but you pay for the 2nd floor which I highly recommend 😇😊 …
Daniel Lim
Very calm and quiet. You can go into the church. I especially loved the trail through the forest with stones if Jesus's suffering to crucifixion.
Tim Eddington
Beautiful light displays. Lots and lots of light's. Beautiful chorale music in the church by the choirs and the fantastic "" Oregon City High School Master Choir "" was amazing.
Star
It felt so nice to be there. The sounds of birds and the smell of flowers are quite relaxing and walking around also was enjoyable.
Sharmaine.1 B
Sweet ladies at the gift shop. 2 aspects-lower level of the mountain and the upper level. Was a spiritial experience for me
The garden is reflective of the beauty of our faith.
Kristy Bishop
Nice way to spend a little time.
Nick Hennessy
The Grotto is one of my favorite places in portland and i'm not even a religious guy. I love going there on misty spring mornings, just to walk around and think my thoughts. If u'r lucky you might even see a monk!
Gabrielle Chung
A very holy spiritual place. I took the elevator and what a view of the city, what a beautiful pieta. Don't miss this best kept secret in Portland, very close to the PDX airport. It's as beautiful as the Grotto in Lourdes, France, and you don't have to leave the States!! In fact, if you have a several hour layover at PDX, it's possible to just Uber over to this beautifully landscaped sanctuary, get your spiritual batteries recharged, pick up something from the gift shop, and still make your flight connection! This is a hidden gem.
Lawrence “Larry” Locke
A monastery and the Sanctuary of our Sorrowful Mother. Carved and cast Stations of the Cross. Cliffsides and boulders, mossy rocks. Hidden speakers with voices of chanting monks. Free or cheap!
Marta Borrego
It's a beautiful place to meditate and get closer to God. I'm so proud of having this heaven on Earth in Portland area. Thanks everyone that made possible this place.
Deana Aragon
It's a beautiful place
Robin Holmes
I can't believe I've lived here almost my entire life and never been there before. Really pretty and well decorated for the holidays. I really enjoy myself
Mike Knotts
This is the most holy place on Earth in my heart in my opinion I grew up as an altar boy served there and at Saint ritas and I always found a safe Sanctuary amongst the peace that is in this place God is there the priests the nuns they're all wonderful people wonderful beautiful things to see and a gift shop that is little bit high-priced but very very nice collectible items
Cesar Luis Valdez
It was a serene and peaceful place. There were some additions to the place like the shrines. We were disappointed that the Madonna was being repaired so we did not see it.
D WF
Definitely worth $5 dollars to see some of the most breathtaking views offered in PDX. Check out the maze and also note that most of the benches scattered around the bluff have prayer benches behind them for a unique perspective.
Moper
The most magical place for Christmas. The volunteers are so sweet. Especially Jessica. She always greets me with a big smile.
A must see in Portland.
Jill Harwell

Great experience. Peaceful

The perfect marriage of art and nature in a special setting which is authentically spiritual. Such a beautiful place in the city to get away from it all for a few hours.
Nathan Chan
Nice quite place with nice views. There were only a few other people there on the particular day we went. We had a busy day planned, it wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be. Would skip it next time.
S “Bonifide2k9” E
I have been to the grotto before but I hadn't been up to the upper level gardens. The tributes of the saints were comforting and the mothers tribute that overlooked Portland was awesome.
Pasha Saberi
Beautiful and serene. Lovely place, you do need to pay to ride the elevator to the top but worth it as you get an amazing view at the top
Pervynna Water
Quiet and peaceful place

This is such a wonderful place, I tried to come every December for the Christmas festival. There is lovely music and lights, and it's so wonderful to just remember Christ's birth.
Devon Morris
Very beautiful and peaceful place. If you are like me though and don't realize it's a Catholic shrine you might be in for a little shock.
Habelo Domingo
Such a peaceful and tranquil place to worship. A must see or visit whether you're seeking your soul or praying for lived one.

Hidden gem in Portland. A super beautiful spot to check out and walk around in, even if the religious thing isn't your thing. It is very fascinating and usually very quiet.
