Reviews of Heard Museum
Patricia Pieton
This museum is an absolute beautiful addition to our city. Learn about the historical Southwest while touring this beautiful property for 2-3 hours. Experience and learn about the American Indian heritage with all its history .The silver and weaving exhibits, art work, garden sculptures and architecture of the property are outstanding as well as special exhibits . A great day for the out of town visitor and locals alike.
Beautiful for all ages.
Parking is easy and staff is kind and welcoming .

The Heard Museum is a well done museum that you should visit at least once.
The museum is well designed, the exhibits are laid out in a manner that allows for easy viewing. The exhibit spaces and grounds are well kept and look spectacular.
There is a large collection of artwork, jewelry, and other artifacts that speak to the history of Native Americans.
The Indian school exhibit details the history, both good and bad, of boarding schools for native children. It is an interesting and educational look at the history of our country.

All I can say is wow what an amazing Museum to walk through. I teach US History in FL and I will now take back a whole new lesson to show much students I wish I could take them through your amazing facility. Just outstanding how you are preserving the culture and heritage and the truth about how the native Americans were treated. I will absolutely coming back.

This exhibition hall is an outright gorgeous expansion to our city. Find out about the authentic Southwest while visiting this delightful property for 3-4 hours. Experience and find out about the Native American legacy with all its set of experiences .The silver and winding around displays, work of art, garden figures and engineering of the property are exceptional as well as extraordinary shows . An incredible day for the away guest and local people the same.
Delightful for all ages. Stopping is simple and staff is thoughtful and inviting.

Everyone who lives in or visits the Phoenix area should visit the Heard Museum. It’s a beautifully designed and well curated collection of Native American artwork and is breathtaking. But it is not just an art museum because it is also a history museum and there is much to take in and learn. It’s quiet and peaceful, and very large so it will take some time to see everything. There are galleries and courtyards, and just when you think there is nothing more to see you will turn a corner and have another gallery to visit. I loved the museum and will return.
Marie Wildman
Enjoyed it immensely. Very educational yet visually satisfying even if you read none of the descriptive info. Guided tours are available at set times with very knowledgeable docents. Highly recommend going with one. Wouldn't recommend for young children, but would for older ones.

Beautiful, educational Native American museum. There is so much art on display and it’s fantastic to see all of the examples of Indigenous talent. There is a display that shows the impact of Residential/Boarding Schools and Manifest Destiny. As a Native American, This is so eye-opening and infuriating at the same time. It was by far the most impactful things we saw while there and I recommend everyone check it out. If you’re a registered tribal member, you get free admission into the museum.

I looked forward to going to this museum as soon as I planned to visit Phoenix. What an incredible set of exhibits, each one powerful, beautiful and educational. Every staff person and guide I met was helpful and knowledgeable. The bookshop is terrific, with a friendly staff. Great selection of publications. I had several great conversations with people. The food and service at the cafe were both wonderful. It was raining and there was a snug little table, out of the wind, with a roof. It was very nice. Don't miss going to the Heard Museum, if you are in Phoenix! The photos below are from the grounds, a sculpture called The Doll maker. I asked first to see if it was ok to take photos of the stone sculptures. There are many more- the entire experience was amazing.

A museum with many beautiful and fascinating exhibits and artifacts that help you learn about the vibrant local history! I would definitely recommend giving it a visit if you are interested in Arizona history and of the culture, art, and history of the tribes of the South West!

Very nice museum but we didn't have much time to see all of it. The lady that sold us the tickets told us that the 2 hours we had before they closed was enough time to see it and it really wasn't. Why they close at 4pm I have no idea. That was insanely early to close. Most museums are open until at least 5 or 6pm. They should consider extending hours. Also there was not a single affordable thing in the gift shop and I was sorely disappointed. All the beautiful items were hundreds if not thousands of dollars. First time I left a gift shop disappointed. Please include some nice Native American items that normal people can afford. Other than that we enjoyed what we were able to see. Would go back if we had more time...

The heard museum is an amazing place to spend a couple of hours with an absolutely deceptively large collection fit in a relatively small footprint. Very conveniently located next to the light rail station. Also participates in Bank of America Museums on Us promotion.
They focus on Native American culture and there were special exhibits when I went in September 2021 of the way that Native Americans were treated on the reservations which gave a good glimpse and insights that couldn’t be found anywhere else. Extremely pretty sculptures located both inside and outside of the museum. The tribal lands map and all the jewelry available on the reservations was extremely impressive and you’re unlikely to be able to find such an in-depth of Native American history anywhere else in the world.

Heard Native American Museum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sylvia 5-star = sensational
This museum was moving. This is part of the real history of the nations land that everyone should know about and be taught in schools. It’s a small museum that highlights different natives and their art, traditions, and locations. We have lost so much information by the white washing that occurred. Thank you to all the kind and knowledgeable people who work here and to those who have donated or contributed to create this museum. This should be a national landmark and there should be museums like this is every state to honour the tribes who lived here with no boarders or property lines (or taxes!) There’s a wonderful cafe here and one can be here 2-3 hours watching all the mini movies and reading all the info. Definitely for the adults, for kids it’s good but not very inactive.

It was a great experience! I would go back. I went on a free Saturday, which they have like monthly I think. At first I was alone and felt skeptical that I would be judged going to the museum alone (where they were showing "Free Nemo" on the movie screen) as an adult, but there were plenty adults there enjoying it too (alone and in families). They had activities for kids of all ages😊. I learned some things about the state I'd just moved to less than a year ago. I even got to talk to a family and hear family stories about some of the artifacts they were displaying and how they still use them to this day! Then I decided to go and bring my cousin so she could learn a little history too. She had a blast as well!

This was a great museum on American Indian heritage. There are lots of very good exhibits and fine art. $23 was the cost. Very well laid out with different areas. I loved the George Catlin 🎨 work from the mid-1800s. This was some of the first Western art done.
Abigail Anderson
I’m very glad we decided to visit this museum while we were in Phoenix! The exhibition were were very diverse, incl. history, art and the Indian schools exhibition. I didn’t know much going into the museum, but I feel like it gave me a much better foundation of the nativer American tribes in the States (mainly the West of the US). They have regular tours, so it might be worth checking those out! The museum is a bit expensive, but I do think it is worth it and it’s for a good cause! This is a must visit!
Nicolas Epling
Amazing museum, especially from a relatively small building! The art exhibit is beautiful with lots of different forms of art. The section on the boarding schools is a must see for all Americans, disturbing but interesting information on a dark part of our more recent history. They were also giving out free art prints that day which was a nice gift.
ROBIN HOLLAND
It was awesome!! There were musicians and dancers and story teller, a cafe that served delicious food, and amazing indigenous art and artifacts.
We got free tickets from our library.
George T. Sipos
Excellent and necessary museum of native American history focused on the Pueblan nations, although limited exhibits on some of the plains nations are available. Extremely well-documented and organized and a must-see if in the area. The second floor permanent exhibit on the tragedy and crime of the Indian schools is a much-needed and sobering feature of the museum, evidencing decades of cultural genocide committed against the native nations of the north American continent by the US desire to expand west and conquer land at all cost.
Jediah
Great museum with a lot of exhibits to explore. It was eye opening to learn about the boarding schools and the affect they had on the indigenous nations. Very important history to be learned.
Tom Reilly
A cultural treasure in our own backyard. The permanent collection is beautiful, educational, and essential for understanding the roots of where we live. The revolving exhibits are curated for those of us that love art. Always enjoy my visits here!
Genny
Beautiful museum. The indigenous art and history are a must see! It was a well curated museum and the docent that led the tour was wonderful and knowledgeable.
Marteal Lamb
Come and see the beauty the complexity and the the Ingenuity and creativity of Native American art as they enter weave it with objects that are used in daily life! I really enjoyed this place. Come on free Friday!
TravelingTK78
Checked this out with my niece for 2023s first, first Friday. So glad we did. They had a live Hawaiian music/historical presentation, it was amazing. And this museum, just WOW. I learned so much!
Ali Naghizadeh
Excellent experience. Thanks to the museum guides. They are amazing and knowledgeable.
I highly recommend if you are interested to know more about Native American culture and history.
Check for live events which are great.
Peggy Jurcisin
The Heard Museum has the largest collection of Native American art and artifacts. I've visited this museum on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The collections are fascinating, the displays and literature are incredibly informative. The Heard Museum is a treasure that everyone should dedicate a few hours, or all day, to visit.
CHRIS
It was hard being here and seeing all the old white people and nuns. It sounds mean but it didn't feel good. I wondered if they were there cuz they felt sorry for what they're people did to my people or were they there looking at everything like they're people did a good job. Maybe they had Cherokee in them!?!? But Racism is real and it's taught and it hurts. I appreciate the things the museum showed me,, this is a place EVERYONE IN AMERICA SHOULD SEE.
Ellie Eyestone
Incredible museum! Loved the layout and culture and art and history. Beautiful building and layout. If there’s one museum to go to in Phoenix- this is it!! (We were very underwhelmed by the Phoenix art museum relative). Gave me a greater for Native American land and culture and people and is such a fitting museum to have in Phoenix! Psa tickets are cheaper online if you get before and great student discount!
Ashley Baker
The Heard Museum is a hidden gem in Phoenix! I was looking for inside activities and stumbled upon thus museum. I learned a lot! Enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Cafe on site. Highly recommend!
Karenanne Beavers
Great museum, spent 4 hours there. Lots of history, beautiful American Indian art work, jewelry and more.
Marie Bienkowski
Not just relics here. Fresh contemporary artwork. Compelling special exhibits-look for the one on Indian Boarding Schools. A bit tricky to find all the rooms. Great outdoor sculpture as well.
Tera Barry
Its a small museum and a lot of the art is newer. I expected more "artifact" type items. Many items were younger than me! The whole wing that features the Indian school experience is amazing and worth the price of admission alone. They tell a very painful, hard and scary part of history with grace, truth and care.
Robert C
It was a nice day at the Heard's Museum looking at the jewelry and artifacts from the early years. There was Hoop Dancer and a lot of people showing off the items to buy.
Ryan Hutchins
Great museum. I enjoyed the information and art from The Native American tribes. They have great exhibitions and helpful staff. I will be back.
Sean Mahoney
Excellent exhibits well laid out, Cafe had a very nice menu with a comfortable outdoor seating area and the service stood out.
Karen Pike
Unique exhibits focusing on Native American Indian art of the Southwest. Delightful air conditioning on a hot day. Don't skip the gift shop.
Joe Wang
Really great museum detailing American Indian history and art. The tour given was very detailed and the guides gave important insight into the exhibits.
Pat Horkan
This is a very moving, and historic museum. So many impressive and expressive examples of our history! The photos are just a small sample of what The Heard has to offer. It also offers videos to provide an educational experience.
Brenda Yazzie
It was a great museum date with the family. Everyone there was nice. I will definitely come again especially since it's free for Native Americans.
Jaime Steele
The boarding school exhibit was one that gave me goosebumps. Definitely an exhibit to take time in read and put into perspective what the Indian Policies did to Indigenous people socially, culturally and emotionally. All past Indian policies sought one goal and that was to exterminate a beautiful race of people.
Justin Mccart
Truly an amazing museum , lots of Native American history to check out !
Prepare yourself sometime to check everything out ! Also please leave donations to keep this place alive .👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 …
Akshat Kumar
Incredible place, so much to know and learn about the Native American history, and how so much of it was systematically erased, and yet the Native Americans cling to their history, their heritage and their legacy like it was something invaluable.
The boarding school exhibit was really something. Visit this museum and educate yourself on one of the essential elements of America—the Native American culture, and history.
There are a lot of free parking spaces outside the museum. I’ll be back here again when I’m in Phoenix.
Susan Hiltz
What a fun experience... We loved the 12 pm and 1 pm tours ... well laid out ... beautiful exhibition ❤️
Casey Gordon
Many cool artifacts and history lessons. The Hawaii surfing installation was cool. Not sure, in light of the increased coverage on terrible treatment and deaths at the boarding schools, they captured how bad it was. Felt a little too positive.
Emily Smith
We visited on Free Saturday. The main draw was the partnership with AZ PBS and Molly. It was a fun event and the staff kept things moving in an organized manner. We spent a small amount of time exploring. The exhibit Far From Home was powerful and heartbreaking. The first thing you see is a barber chair and the floor is covered with hair, loose and in braids. As you walk closer you can hear the sounds of old fashioned clippers. Well that just broke my heart and set the tone for the rest of the exhibit. Look forward to visiting again and exploring more the the exhibits.
Victoria Cooper
This is one of the nicest and well kept Native American culture type museum I have been to! Everyone who worked there was nice, helpful and full of information! We spent about 2 hours there because there was so much to learn and see. The tour guides are nice and gave very interesting and educational tours. Wish we could've spent more time there!
Matt Beres
What an almost hidden gem! Lots of fascinating information centered around Native Americans, especially the Indian Schools that existed from the late 19TH century until into the post WWI 20TH century. Lots of art and priceless artifacts dating from 150 years ago to the present day. The museum itself dates back to over 90 years ago. If you are into history at all, this museum is a must visit.
Cheryl Joseph
Wow! So glad I purchased an annual membership. Very friendly, helpful staff. Easily accessible by public transportation or car.
Visit this beautiful site and learn about the Native Americans. Their work - kachina dolls, jewelry, carpets, pottery, papooses - will leave you speechless. Don't miss the artwork in the outdoor garden.
There are group tours a few times a day through the museum. Fabulous gift shop. Be sure to check out their calendar of events. Can't wait for the Christmas Ornament Market and the Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market.
Deanna Robbins
So so so nice! We started with the contemporary side and it was AWESOME! We then went upstairs to the Indian School exhibit which was so touching. Lastly we
Explored the indigenous ppl crafts. My son and I LOVED the museum… (staff was awesome too!)
Nicholas Pirro
Beautiful, ornate, organized and informational. This place really knocks your socks off. The history of the represented people is well done and depicted accurately. The 2nd floor is a real eye opener.
Kristina Urena
Seriously do not have enough good words to say about this Museum. The curator of their contemporary exhibit is amazing. I'm always excited to see what's new and what's more it's always something different and thought provoking. The architecture alone is worth going for as the building and wrought iron are beautiful as are the grounds. Plus, they are child friendly which you might not automatically expect. We've been taking our kids at least once a month for years and love doing the hands on activities that tie into the main exhibit as a family. I'm hoping that this is brought back soon as due to COVID it was closed.
Michael Taylor
I want to say I enjoyed my visit. I will say it's "okay". Very pricey in my opinion. Both in terms of entrance price and in the gift shop. Was very quiet except for the staff coming and going and cackling loudly..the visitors were more respectful and quiet. Seemed like security was following us around?..I don't know why it ranks in the top five of Phoenix museums. As I said my overall impression was "it's okay". I think there are alot of options for learning about Native American art and culture in Tucson, Albuquerque, even just north of Phoenix in Flagstaff that leave a greater impression on a visitor. Just my thoughts.
Jim Kelso
Absolutely top notch! The museum has been beautifully updated since our last visit over 10 years ago. Native American lives and history are much more detailed. We regret the time we allowed was far too short.
Sophia Rodruan
Great place to visit for education on Native American culture and history. We visited when the Navajo weaving exhibit was on display and it was so fascinating. Most sobering exhibit was the one on the Indian School Experience. If you plan on eating at the cafe afterwards, try to make a reservation the day before your visit as the cafe closes around 2PM. We visited on a Tuesday and the cafe was very busy. Waited about an hour for a table.
City Eats
I helped cooked a amazing dinner for their guests. I had a amazing time and would do it again with my work team.
Steven Holland
What a fantastic museum - the guided tour was excellent. This is a must see/visit for anyone living or visiting Phoenix. I wanted to do a shout out specifically to the restaurant. Excellent food, well prepared and the serving staff were so friendly and helpful!
Jean-Francois Désilets
Interesting and complete presentation of native history in AZ in an approachable manner. We did guided tour and guide was not very good at presenting material; other guide sounded a bit better. Parking available on site. Price a bit steep considering what is on display.
Vivian Wang
Nice educational museum , cafe ‘s food and service is great!
Kevin Myers
The Heard Museum has a new exposition showing the history of native American jewelry in this part of the country-- especially that jewelry that is made of turquoise and silver. It is very interesting.
The small coffee shop was also very good-- my friend and I were able to order a salad and some sweets and a coffee-- all at a reasonable price.
Thank you!
Candi Benford
Beautiful display of the history of the American Indian. The gift shop has some fabulous jewelry and paintings. It's a place you don't want to miss when you visit Phoenix. It encompasses the true history of the American Indian in the Arizona area.
Traci Nelson
Our daughter was mesmerized with the Art Fence and the outdoor areas. Also the Boarding Schools exhibit was very Enlightening and gives a first hand real life experience from the children's point of view! Great place to get out of the heat!
Ruben Castro Espinoza
I highly recommend visiting this museum if you’re in phoenix. It’s a unique museum that can only be found here. They have various native America artifacts and a whole section dedicated to Native America boarding schools. It was highly informative and tragic.
Denise W
Amazing place. I definitely recommend to visitors as well as residents. The art, historic artifacts, history and culture of the people who first lived here is beautifully and respectfully displayed. The best is also the most heartbreaking. Be sure to visit the room devoted to the removal of children from their families to be placed in Indian boarding schools. If you are unfamiliar with that part of US history, brace yourself.😪
William Lumpkin
Wonderful place to see American Indian art, jewelry, clothing, 100+ year old clothing and photos. I was absolutely amazed at the craftsmanship. If you are ever in Phoenix and you love learning historical facts...The HEARD MUSEUM is a must see.
Jeffrey Lippert
I did not go into they heard museum. This is a review on the Heard museum native American store. The store has a huge collection of arts and crafts from many native nations. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and I highly recommend this place if you are a collector or if you're looking for fine native American jewelry to wear.
Lisa
I honestly thought I was going to be bored out of my mind at this museum, but I actually really enjoyed it. There was a tour starting in an hour, so we just walked around (that part was boring). But once the tour started, it was really interesting! The tour started as one big group, then split into two groups after the introduction. We started with one group, but we couldn't hear the tour guide very well, so we went to the other group. I just want to say how good this guide was... I thought I would remember her name so I could tell everyone to make sure to get a tour with her, but I forgot it! I think her last name was Weber, but I'm not certain. Anyway, she was a really great guide and not only did she make it interesting, but I also learned a lot.
After the tour, there was a hoop dancing demonstration, which was pretty cool. Then we went to the restaurant and the food was so incredible. We thought it would be overpriced café food, but my family and I were so surprised about how good it was. And there are vegetarian options.
Chris Valle
An exquisite collection of Indigenous art and perspectives. A good balance of traditional and contemporary work, robustly supported by historical context and personal perspectives. A must-see in Phoenix.
Steve Pierce
Beautiful art. Every American should know what’s displayed in the “Indian Schools” exhibit. This chapter in our history is still ongoing to this day! Very interesting. Learned much I didn’t know.
John Thompson
What a great experience! Some world class art for the positive feelings. A Navajo exhibit of weaving! A traumatic learning experience on Native American children being sent to "Indian Schools" by the federal government. Overall this museum was a chance to look at culture of the Indiginous people of North America.
Palmira Bustillos
I love this place is clean and attractive visual art and photography
Nicholas Alexander Brown
Excellent museum. Nice mix of art and historical exhibits. Essential history to learn about Native and Indigenous people.
Kim Canetti
I had been to the Museum 30 years ago with our children!! Just went back with my husband and had lunch outside at the Cafe (The food was very, very good!) We then went in to the museum and spent an 1 hr+ looking at everything. Loved coming back after all these years!!
Bethany Summers
I was very impressed with this museum. I learned so much more than I anticipated and it really sparked my interest in learning more about the area’s history and culture. The artwork is beautiful and the historical exhibits are truly powerful. I got my ticket free through the Phoenix Public Library
Phillip Himel
Went to world championship Hoop dance competition...good time, got some Sun. Beautiful grounds. I loved the old museum, they showed the old and contemporary AmIndian arts. Now it's more ... teachy and kid friendly. That's ok too...
Terry Oswald
What a tremendous experience it has been visiting this iconic museum. Beyond this, this place is staffed with terrific staff and also accompanied by a wonderful cafe and more... Highly recommend!!!
harper west
I like this museum, its not overly large and seems to stay concentrated on what it's known for - Native and Southwestern artists. It's easy to get to from anywhere in the valley, easy to walk around.
Sophia Greif
Great exhibits and wonderful cafe, great place for a casual brunch.
Samantha D'costa
Beautiful place to learn abt the art history of Native American/Indigenous Nations who lived in the Southwest. The exhibit on the boarding school history of Native Americans was extremely moving. Definitely would recommend this place
Meg Parisi
Wonderful exhibits, staff extremely knowledgeable about native ameican culture which is the focus of this museum. Rotating exhibits as unique and informative as permanent exhibits.
Amazing gift shop.
Rachel Ewell
Wonderful museum and center filled with the stories and history of the Native American tribes of this region and beyond. Amazing to see all of the artifacts and the different exhibitions. Fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
Scott Gleason
The Heard Museum features exhibits that span the history, art, and culture of the Native Americans. Well laid out in a large area. Educational as well as fun. Walk free or take a tour. A bit on the pricey side especially the museum store but the items are authentic and beautiful. There is a cafe for drinks and snacks as well. Individual day passes are 25.00 but there are passes for 3 visits and a year long all access pass as well. The Phoenix library also features culture passes that gain entry for two people for free. Altogether a great experience. Recommend to anyone from the inquisitive to the native American enthusiast.
Ron Peoples
Great way to spend an afternoon, beautiful exhibits. We had lunch at the cafe, wonderful! Has a new exhibition that opened today 11/06/2022 the substance of stars, very nice.
Rich Ball
An outstanding museum featuring a mixture of Native American history and Native American art.
Free docent led tours are available and are a great way to receive an overview of the museum and the history of the Native American people of the Southwest.
Some highlights of the museum:
The museum has a large selection of pottery featuring the different styles from the various tribes with explanations on how they have evolved.
The Katsina collection is simply outstanding and features the Goldwater collection.
There is a rotating modern art display highlighting the evolution of Native American art.
The history of the Native American Boarding schools is something everyone should see to learn the history and impact of the schools on Native American tribes and their culture.
Holly Lorentz
Interesting museum of native American art and history. Has dolls, pottery and rugs just to name a few. Lovely little Cafe attached.
Phillip Case
Note, I only put free for admission only because I'm Dził Łigaii Sían Ndee (White Mountain Apache), and admission is free for all tribal members of federally recognized tribes. The have the starlight exhibit going on right now, and it is so awesome! I encourage you to go see.
Vanessa Glady
I've been going to the Heard Museum since I was a kid. Their collection of Native American artifacts and current items is breathtaking. But there is so much more that that. They help us to step into the cultures and understand the beautiful way the Native Americans value and respect all life. Look at the monthly calendars to see what great lectures and events they have. The museum is wheelchair friendly.
Michael Yin
Learned a lot about the Native American’s history, culture, and art. People here are super nice! Recommend to download their app and then you can do a self-guided tour!
Timothy Laufer
My wife and I loved this gem! I learned something new in every corner. The exhibits were fantastic. We ate at the cafe and the lavish museum store on site. Food and coffee were great and the gifts for sale were unique.
Erdmann Rogge
This is a stunning museum. The tour guide is a must. What you see is eye opening and allows you to better understand the history of our country.
Roxanne Fox
Far more than expected. The temporary exhibits were great, and the permanent exhibits were also fantastic. If your eyes were open a little bit about “Indian schools“ the permanent exhibit on this topic will still shock you. Must see.
justin rivera (JayIsFunny)
This is a meticulously cared for and stunningly beautiful museum in the heart of Phoenix dedicated to the history and culture of Native American people. It is humbling and touching and provides an insight into a culture that is oft overlooked and underappreciated in American history. Admission is only $20. The museum shop has a great assortment of Native American gifts and there's a cafe as well. A wonderful place to visit and a must see for anyone with an interest in Native American culture.
Winston Fritz
Very long wait at the food truck, two unfriendly and rude workers in the coffee shop, and the vendor that was selling potato chips and a popsicle type snack. I don't remember how much we paid for entry for the Hola hoop dance competition.
Yule Rage
Definitely worth seeing if you could only pick one museum in Phoenix. Especially if you’re not from the Southwest. It’s a very well kept museum with plenty of artifacts from all over the region, a must-see for anyone interested in Native American art, culture & history.
Spencer Cordero
Fantastic museum. I was incredibly moved by what I saw. I had no idea about a lot of Native American modern history and the exhibits here were extremely informative. I particularly enjoyed the Indian School exhibit. It was very eye opening and made me see how Native Americans were treated in a different light.
Museum staff were very well informed and answered all my questions. I’m not sure if they were paid or volunteers, but you can definitely tell they were committed.
Definitely stop by if you can. It’s an incredible experience. Well worth the museum admission. Phoenix Art Museum is right down the road, which is also a fantastic experience.
Neema Kamaria
My sister had her wedding at the Museum. It was just beautiful. The staff was excellent helpful supportive and made our time there extremely wonderful. I would recommend this venue to anyone. The enviroment is beautiful and each area from the wedding Outdoors to the inside reception and the courtyard dinner was just amazing. I'd highly recommend this as a wedding venue oh and the best part our cocktail hour and private viewings of the museum itself!
Homer Ray III
Beautiful Indian creations organized by the tribes from who crafted them. Guide nicely explained how the regions where the tribes came from influenced the work. History of the Indian influence and treatment of the Indians fascinating. Museum store offers beautiful selections of jewelry, art, sculpture, carvings, rug work and more from native artists.
Joshua L
A thorough and informative museum, I was particularly moved and saddened to learned more about the history of Indian Schools and our country's barbaric attempt at acculturation. The exhibit on Home was great.
My one complaint was that the tour guide was leading such a large group that it made it impossible for others to navigate or see the full exhibit easily. There was no awareness of others experiencing the exhibit.
Timothy Bee
What a beautiful place filled with exhibits that evoke tragic and important memories of the Southwest.
The most important is the exhibit on Indian boarding schools. The preeminent museum in Phoenix dedicates about a quarter of its space to a dark and forgotten era in our history. There’s a sadness to it that stays with you long after you’ve driven off.
The Navajo textile exhibit is stunning. I spent an hour in there soaking in the beauty. Some of the pieces are over 130 years old.
The kachina dolls are a good palette cleanser and appropriately sandwiched between. The heavier exhibits.
I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for this 90 year old institution.
Geoffrey Gowan
Excellent museum. Very engaging and informative! Also had a lot of beautiful art.
Nicholas Merth
Today I had the great pleasure of visiting the renowned Heard Museum in Phoenix
Arizona. The experience was really quite enjoyable, as there were many different exhibitions
housed in the maze of courtyards, balconies, elevators and sets f grandeur stairs. We even paid
extra for the Henry Matisse collection and let me tell you it was worth every penny. Before we
even made it to the front entrance, we were entertained with a beautiful walk through an outdoor
sculpture garden nestled in between the walls of the compound. The Architecture of the estate is
very traditional and open. Lush trees and refined landscaping almost eliminate the bustling
downtown just feet away. Among the sculptures decorating the path the entrance is a beautiful
set of reflecting fountains. Not one but two geometrical modern fountains and reflections pools
steal you attention right before you enter.
We were given the opportunity to attend some tours of the exhibits but opted instead to
wander at our own leisure. In retrospect, the tours might have been less walking, as we had to
backtrack multiple times to ensure we saw every exhibit. Though it was fun, exploring the many
corridors and hallways of the beautiful building. If it doesn’t say employees only it’s free reign,
and there is art hidden behind every accessible door.
First on the self-guided tour was the Amazing Matisse collection. If you like tribal masks,
and I sure do, then this is the collection for you. Now not only did this guy paint amazing stuff,
but he had his own incredible collection of tribal masks. In one portion of the exhibit there were
these side by side presentations. On the wall were half masks, or damaged mask and then next to
them were Matisse paintings of the missing half or portions. His technique was so profound and
life like, I had to double and triple check with my guest to ensure indeed, yes, they were just flat
painting. His shadowing and 3d effects were incredulous to say the least. As we ventured further and further into this collection, the masks got bigger and more complex. Reading about their
origins and uses took some time. We breezed through the rest of the museum, but here we really
spent some time. This led to a few purchases on the beautiful gift shop I must say. Getting one of
his original pieces would be something I enjoyed very much. I did score a cool mask print in the
2d technique and I can’t wait to frame and hang it.
The rest of the exhibits all had a theme. Indian tribes from all over Arizona as well as the
rest of western us including Alaska, were represented. In the galleries. Jewelry, baskets, baby
cradles and clothing were shown in styles from each of the many tribes we have in Arizona. In
these collections were some really cool art and day to day tools from many hundreds of years
ago to even very recent art from local artisans. One of my favorite pieces from the collections
was a rain suit made from seal intestines. It sounds gross, but it looked really cool and much like
a plastic poncho. The ingenuity of the different tribes was amazing as they adapted to live in
these harsh environments without the modern conveniences we all live with today.
After a few hours and many trips up and down stairs, we settled down at a small table
right next to one of the two reflecting pool and fountains. The weather was cool and sunny, and
we ate and discussed what we had seen. The Heard museum experience was much better than I had hoped for. I look forward to future visits and exhibitions.

Despite the current work being carried out to the entrance, this is a beautiful Museum with an amazing collection of African, AmeroIndian and further afield exhibits including modern sculptures and installations in downton Phoenix.
If you care to learn about the historic wealth of Arizona's past and its many diverse Indian tribes this is the starting point.
Ervin Anderson
This museum is a true gem of original native artwork. There are some pieces of historical significance and some collections of great memorabilia. From the relatively obscure to famous artist, their work is shown here.
Hoka Skenandore
The Boarding School exhibition is a must view. An amazing permanent collection and I'm not just saying that because they have something of mine in their basement.
Alex Wattay
A great and important refuge for the Native American story - unbelievable art work. The tours are very informative and the guides extremely knowledgeable! An awesome experience and must see place when visiting Phoenix AZ!
Cynthia de Lorenzi
We visited the Heard Museum during our visit to Phoenix. It is a wonderful museum filled with native arts. They were hosting a Matisse exhibit while we were there and so enjoyed exploring how native masks influenced his work.
You will be so engaged by everything you discover here!
Charlotte Si
Really interesting! We went on two mini guided tours and guides gave us an incredible amount of information and helped appreciate all the art. We had an amazing time!
francheska johnston
The Heard museum was super amazing. Not only was the museum filled with Native American art. There was incredible architecture in the older building including several levels and different areas to look through.
Arie Taylor
A very in depth look at native culture in the southwestern United States. They had an entire exhibit about the Indian boarding schools, which I didn't even know about. This is probably the biggest collection of Native art I've ever seen, much of it traditional but some more modern.
Vernon Chang
I really enjoyed the Heard Museum, located in the downtown Phoenix area. In fact, I went there twice and I still learned alot every time I was there. Heard Museum has lots to see, lots of exhibits, with interactive exhibits, art pieces, videos, even some special artwork that only available for a limited time basis. Heard Museum focuses on the history of the lives of the indigenous people. We got to see the regions they live in, the pottery, the clothing and getting an idea their lives are. The part that hits me the most everytime is the harsh lives they encountered when they were being confined into specific english school, away from their parents and families. I think it's a learning experience. It's important to learn other people's culture and getting to respect and get to know more about each groups of people. I highly recommend you to visit Heard Museum if you are into culture, art and history.
Richard Wootten
As an artist I Love to visit the Heard Museum ..always great.
Posted photos of current exhibitions. Kudos to all the artists modern and traditional!
All very interesting & educational 😎 Rich W.

This is one of my favorite museums in Arizona. The exhibits are powerful and you can learn so much about our Native American ancestors here. I really enjoy how they change their exhibits often too I feel like everytime I come theres something I haven't seen before and that's such a fun feeling.
Jason Hall
Nice organized and their exhibits for the the native American art is excellent, the silver boxes were extremely impressive
Priyanka Dhavle
A detailed portrayal of Native American people & their culture is showcased here. We had an amazing guide who explained everything with such good examples. A must visit in Poenix for sure.
C E
Great art exhibit. A visit to the "boarding school" stories is a MUST. There is a store that is like another little gallery itself. Plus a small bookstore and cafeteria. Not sure if it is wheelchair accessible as many exhibit rooms have a few or many stairs to get to them. There is a locker if you don't want to carry your bag around.
Aaron Miller
Fantastic museum! Great blend of history and contemporary works of art. I visited with my family and we thoroughly enjoyed it. A wonderful educational and cultural experience!
Nesha
I love the Frida kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibits. I love museum so this place is excellent. Free on sundays. The have a cafe and decent gift shop. The cafe is a little pricey. The museum offers various of options at their in house restaurant. Family friendly, photography friendly(no flash). Clean establishment. Love Native American culture. Highly recommend. Parking is crowded on sundays but there is ample parking across the main entrance before turning right. Turn left at museum at heard you will see free additional parking.
Lawrence Goodrich
Fantastic museum well worth a stop if you’re in Phoenix. We’re here about three hours. Took a couple of the free guided tours, volunteers were excellent.
Frank Telles
First Fridays at this time is free admission and they close at 8:00pm. Check out their website for updates. It’s an excellent museum to learn about Indigenous culture of the Southwest. Highly recommended.
Prithvi Puppala
It is a good place to know about Native American history. I've enjoyed various fusions of modern and Native American art. Entry is $25 per adult. $9 for student
Kevin Albert
The Indian Fair was welcomed back with great crowds, beautiful artwork and amazing music and dances!!!
Jennifer J. Grove
The museum is a very good couple of hours spent looking and learning the history of the Native Americans.
Carolyn Becker
Seems only appropriate to have a greater ratio of Indiginous folks giving tours verse non Natives. There are are many capable folks out there. It was really strange and uncomfortable for me as an Indigenous person to see/hear non-native folks giving these presentations, I didn't sense a connection to the experiences of Indiginous peoples from these presenters. A thought... possibly recruit local Native students to do presentations (tours).
The information presented at the museum was great, and very informative helping to dispell the inaccurate retoric out there. The boarding school section was extremely difficult for me, as my elders had actually gone through these experiences. Thank you
Julie DePaulo (jukied)
We were fortunate enough to visit during the Hoop competition. Coming from Ohio, it was a great and unique experience to see Native American culture in action. The museum itself had a very nice mix of contemporary and older arts and crafts. I really enjoyed being able to see the variety of artistic styles found throughout the southwest.
msteresa1987
Mom, my brother, my Uncle, and I got free admission because we each had our CDIB card on hand, so that was pretty cool. This place was very clean, organized, and beautifully maintained and had a big variety of art, sculptures, crafts, and more. One thing, I wish there were more information on certain artifacts, paintings, and things like that.
Bottom line, I think more people should come and see this place if they haven't before.
Peter Czipott
A superb museum with splendidly curated and displayed objects, set in admirable (often sobering) context.
Stephanie Still
Absolutely wonderful museum. I learned so much much about ceramics and other local craft.
Diane Gray
This is one of the best museums I've ever been too. It's beautiful with interesting, educational exhibits. Every American should experience the "Away from Home" exhibit about a very sad chapter in our history. It's very moving and unforgettable. This museum is a must see!
Andrew Mohammed
This museum is a true treasure. The exhibits are well-thought out and provide a fantastic and compelling glimpse into many aspects of Native American culture. The building itself and the grounds are also lots of fun to explore; it is a place that you want to spend as much time in as possible. There is much more to experience than is apparent at first glance. My wife and I also went during the annual Indian fair, so there was so much more to see and do during our visit. The gift store was quite impressive, and had many items for sale that compared favorably with what the fair artisans had to offer.
Rick Eichstaedt
Amazing collection of Native American art and artifacts. Powerful exhibit on boarding schools. Don't miss this museum.
Yaeka Katsuta
Tour guides are very knowledgeable and really enhanced the experience. I have a much deeper understanding on the arts and history if American Indians
Matthias Lampe
Museum displaying a variety of native American arts and history of the region. It's worth a visit but the entrance fee is to high for what is offered.
Ming Dynasty
A trip to Phoenix isn't complete without a visit to the Heard Museum if you like Native American culture. Don't forget to visit the book and gift stores!
You won't be disappointed.
Steve Sugarman
Many interesting and beautiful exhibits. Helpful and informative docents that add extra background and insights to the exhibits.
Fred Pineau
You will love the varied motifs of Native American artwork and crafts. Enjoy both historic and comtemporary examples of their culture. Don't forget to have a relaxing lunch in the beautiful dapled courtyard
Patrick O'Leary
Quintessential Native American repository for arts, culture and history. A must visit for anyone from out of town.
Jordan Allen
An incredible collection of Native American art/artifacts. I loved it and wish I could have spent more time there.
Yulia Kesaieva
The place really amazes with its combination of native amerpicans' art and history with artefacts.
My personal favourite were astonishing with its detailed costumes dolls and videos recorded about people living and choosing to live in reservations.
Tim E
We had two great tours here by people that really cared. The museum is beautiful and well kept! There is a lot of history available.
Iron Fist
Love this museum. Nice and lovely artifacts on display. Also a ton of cool artwork.. 👍🏼 I'd say it's not too pricey for multiple people.
Karene Tucker
I went in the evening for 1st Friday and the admission was Free. They had live music and the museum was open to all visitors. I had not been to the museum in quite some time, they always change the exhibits and keep it fresh. I enjoyed the whole experience and if you have not been there before I highly recommend it.
Victoria Choate
Incredible museum! This is a wonderful place to learn more about Native history and modern experiences. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful. I was surprised by how much there was to see—pottery, katsina dolls, Navajo rugs, the art exhibit, sculpture garden, and more. The film was a bit long, but worth it to learn more about the Sunrise Dance tradition especially. Loved it and would highly recommend this museum to anyone.
Denise Carlquist
Beautiful grounds. Extensive native American collection. Fascinating history that wasn't taught in school on how we treated these people. Elaborate gift shop. Awesome food at the cafe. Wonderful bookstore too. A must see!
Christina Cormier
Very moving history about the American Indian tribes! The artwork on display was beautiful. The only drawback was the areas of construction made it a little more challenging to get the wheelchair from floor to floor.
Rauvan Averick
Wonderful collection of Indian artwork. Examples of pottery, weaving, and dolls of the different Indian tribes.
K “Nikki” Wood
My first time to visit the Heard Museum, I was unsure what to expect. It was amazing. I arrived close to11:30am. What perfect timing. I was able to go two different tours given by their volunteer docent staff. The tours were excellent: Away from Home - American Indian Boarding Schools was the first tour and Native People in the Southwest, was the second one.
Highly recommend both tours. The docents are very knowledgeable. It was nice to get the overview of what there is to see, then go back and to look at the displays and read the descriptions. There is so much to see. For a Tuesday, there seemed like lots of people visiting the museum, there were families with children, and many adults of all ages. Looking forward to the opportunity to visit again, and maybe take some students on a field trip to the Heard.
AJ L
"The mission of the Heard Museum is to be the world's preeminent museum for the presentation, interpretation and advancement of American Indian art, emphasizing its intersection with broader artistic and cultural themes. They do it well! Most impressive organization with an even more impressive collection. A must see. And the personal group tour is killer. Our tour guide was an incredible wealth of information and when she noticed a native-American in our group she invited him to fact-check what she was saying, and to also answer questions from the group, which he did willingly, enhancing the experience. And if you're hungry when you visit please have a meal right inside the compound at the museum cafe. A surprising menu with entrees that are close to gourmet at reasonable prices.
Jason DePerro
This museum highlights the history of Native American art, crafts and farming practices. There is an exhibit that covers the Indian Schools and how Europeans sought to convert the native Americans, on the day I went it was unfortunately closed, but I've been told it is worth the trip to see. They Heard Museum has performances, so you can experience the culture and languages of different tribes. On the day I visited Southern Alaskan Inuit dancers visited for a performance. The gift shop has local NM artwork for sale.
Keith Shamma
Nice experience at the Heard. So much native items to check out. On top of other rare art that would not be seen elsewhere. Can take a tour with groups and hear lots of fun facts, or walk free and explore at your own pace. Must stop spot if you are in the art district.
Todd Mowen
Great museum with lots to see! Great history! They also have events here which are informative and entertaining.
Jeremy Miller
Beautiful museum!!! I would recommend anyone coming to Phoenix go here!!
Moore1387
I came here for my cousin's beautiful wedding, so I didn't really have a normal visit. Still, what a gorgeous museum.
candy Palmersheim
Wonderful tour by a local woman. Great collections of kachina dolls and jewelry. And the Cafe has excellent food.
Shalimar Minott
Enjoyed learning the history and way of life of the different Indian tribes in the area.
Tomasz Tyka
Easily one of the best places I visited while on my vacation. I learned a lot, and was shocked about what you don't learn in school as a kid growing up in history class... Especially when learning about the boarding schools. If you're in the area during your trip, or if you live here and have never been... Stop by on a free afternoon to learn and enjoy.
Casilda Chenier
History and cultural education missed in typical American history presented in beautiful artwork and video. Tour guide was honest and knowledgeable.
Kellie
Incredible collection and display of Native American art and history. Thoroughly enjoyed my time here!
Karen Johnson
Loved the Heard Museum. So many Indian Tribes represented. Not enough time to do them all justice. Hope to come back soon.
Geno Yazzie
An AMAZING place to see all that our Native Region has to offer. I was in awe of all the artifacts in their collection, I will be making sure to visit the Hm Heard Museum for often.
Julia Beljo
What a well thought out museum! Very beautiful grounds, building and most of all art. Extremely informative and interesting! Loved every moment of it.
Amy Watts
Amazing place! We went to Arizona on vacation and we were so glad we went to the Heard museum. We didn't take a guided tour because we have a kiddo but I would recommend it. Everytime we passed the guided group, they were discussing some very interesting things. I might have become introduced to and immediately addicted to Katsinas in this visit. I suggest taking lots of money, the gift shop is unbelievable. lol They have things for a few dollars ranging into the thousands! I bought my first katsina.
Björn Thomas
Some beautiful artwork to be seen here... I REALLY enjoyed the sculptures outside & some of the glasswork inside... I was a little disappointed that there were not more things that were older... most items in this museum are from this century, & the kachina collection, while large, is mostly recently created work... not knocking the artists here, it’s just this museum was more contemporary art than historical items... overall though I was pleased with my experience but would never have a desire to go back or take a friend... there are other art galleries in the valley I prefer over this one.
Vladimir Maruntelu
An interesting dive into the culture of native Indian peoples. The staff was really nice, helfpul and always willing to assist and provide helpful and accurate information.
Karen B (Florida Vintage & More)
Very educational, covers many American Indian tribes; their customs, jewelry, pottery andrew more. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
Roger Rutschman
The Heard feel's comfortable, A place to spend several hours enjoying native American art and creativity, the facility is well maintained and beautiful, you will want to become a member, membership between 60 to 100.
just a little
Such a fun place to visit for Native American art. The layout includes indoor and outdoor pieces. It's fun to explore individually
Tina Estes
One of my fave museums in Phoenix!
Laura Casaletto
Excellent place vibrant with art and history and stories of the people it exhibits. The building is beautiful too. The staff is friendly.
Daniel Lindsay
Nice exhibits and events. I had a good time watching the Hawaiian group on First Friday.
Mike Gross
The scope of everything they have is overwhelming. Best collection of Native American art I have ever seen.
Karen Fegan
Smithsonian quality exhibit and history of American Indian art. Will want to visit this beautiful museum again.

American native museum. Lot of volunteers. Very relax, nice layout. Sitting in the courtyard, eating or drinking and enjoy the spring weather.
N K
Beautiful museum with a great collection of artifacts. Very informative exhibits and a friendly staff.
Bruce Pajak
Very nice jewelry and museum all in one location. Beautiful Indian jewelry, and art crafts, books, and collectable items plus a museum in 1 location. It is definitely worth a visit to the museum and check it out when visiting Phoenix area.
Anita Simmons
Nicely laid out space for a special collection. Our docent was excellent, pointing out the highlights. Followed by time to go back for a deep dive. This collection deserves multi visits to appreciate all that is offered. I am in awe and will be investigating the different Native American cultures and history. I purchased tickets online prior to arrival and saved a few dollars.
Warren Cassatt
One of the two best museums in the US so celebrating native American arts and culture exclamation point
J Kiernan
Nice museum, it is great to learn about all aspects of culture. Heard museum does a great job telling the real story of the native people. They have have great events such as the family day I attended. The restaurant is good as well with a nice courtyard to eat in if it isn't too hot
Daniel Barnett
This is my favorite museum in Arizona. I loved the home exhibit the best. Amazing gift shop to top it off. Well done.
Mike Gaboury
Was under construction while we visited. Will update with a full review next time I visit.
Lots of interesting art and exhibits.
Kate Taylor
Such a special collection, especially the INSANE amount of awesome Hopi Kachina dolls. The building and grounds themselves are just beautiful, a great place to relax and have a coffee in the courtyard afger touring the museum. Make sure you go up to the second floor for the fantastic and comprehensive exhibit on Indian boarding schools from the late 19th/early 20th century. The downstairs collections were beautiful but really could have benefitted from better descriptions or maybe an in depth guide I could download to my phone? Hire a tour guide if you want to get deeper, I'd say.
F J (Puppy Tato)
Museum hosting native american hoop dance competition what a great time we had
Brenda Lang
Super interesting and beautiful displays of Native American artifacts. Loved the silver displays.
William Garnsey
I try to come here at least once a year. It's a very well curated museum and the grounds are magnificent.
Kris Tomlinson
Love the museum. We went on a tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Great experience
Micki
Amazing history and art. The cafe food was great. The gift shop was wonderful. Spent several hours here.
Gloria
Charming tour. Over the top friendly staff. Well worth the donation admission to tour studio and watch bronze pouring and learn fascinating history of founder and his contribution to area architecture. Purchased small bell which is a beautiful memory of this unique piece of history in Phoenix.
Julie Nordstrom
Experienced Incredible family of hoop dancers, they have a national competition the first weekend in February at the Heard. Wonderful exhibitions, great vibe!
Michele Williams
What a wonderful experience. We enjoyed all of the exhibits. My two favorite was the beaded dolls. The three artists are truly masters. We found the exhibit about the boarding schools extremely well presented and haunting. Such an ugly part of America history but necessary to tell.
We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the museum cafe. Sit outside if possible.
Tess Farrington
Great exhibit of Native artists' works in painting, sculptures, installations.
Interesting temporary exhibit of Indian Schools- how and why they started, when and why they were closed.
Beautiful courtyard and museum shops too. Delicious coffee shop in there as well.
Kevin May
Very nice and unexpectedly large, almost maze like. Lots to see and remember.
Jacob Child
If you happen to find yourself in AZ and dare venture into the natural hell that is 1,000 blow dryers in your face, it is well worth your time to visit the Heard Museum. We stayed much longer than we expected and had some wonderful emotional experiences while touring this gem. There is a lot of history here that needs to be known and felt by humanity. Thanks for reading please like and subscribe
Elise Cousineau
If you are into indigenous history and art, this is the place for you. Very well done. They include tours which I recommend joining when they are being held. When we attended they had a exhibition of silver. Having done some silversmithing myself years ago, I was intrigued by how they have been doing it for centuries with such detail. One of my favorite displays was the video of the dancer tucked out the way, down a few stairs and around the wall.
C.C. Chapman
A perfect escape for all ages. Ever changing exhibits, lots of learning and a beautiful location.
Jan Kaiser
Beautiful!! Spent entire day here...easy stop on light rail! Great art & displays about Native Americans....I was not aware of some of the information I learned. Restaurant had several choices, great to sit outside. waitress was very accommodating. 🙂
Susan Sparago
This was my third visit to the Heard Museum. My family was visiting from out of town and I wanted them to see this wonderful museum. They promised to come back again, because we only saw part of the first floor on the guided tour that started on the hour when we arrived. They were quite impressed with the collections that we did see on the tour and
we stayed another half hour to see some parts that weren't on the tour.
Kat “K” Mae
I love first Friday free admission.
I also enjoy the range of art shown from ancient times to current times.
It's never boring, because they constantly change their showings.
If you are interested, they have an amazing one coming in October 2022.
Yoneko Johnson
Fantastic museum. Loved learning about Native American modern and traditional art as well as history. The boarding school exhibit was especially moving. Raven Chacon's Still Life No. 3 played on multiple senses to immerse you in the experience.
Victoria Contreras
Amazing collections. Every inch is worth exploring. Took almost the whole day, but the audio tours and collections kept my attention and awe the whole time.
Frank Ferris
Amazing high quality in text and exhibits ie 50 silver Indian made jewelry boxes
Uriah Noynacllams
Very kid friendly, and free for Indigenous Peoples. Why not take a gander for yourselves!
Suzy Rakowski
We did 2 lectures when we visited. Both were very informative. I highly recommend both investigating on your own coupled with the talks. New exhibit on Indians is very important to see though it is disturbing.
Linda Mitchell
The guides are amazing and the recreation dolls in the Sandra Day O'Conner wing were mind boggling. The beads the artists worked with are beyond minute. The Indian artifacts are fascinating and , of course, the jewelry on display is gorgeous. I finally found my favorite Navajo silversmith, Wesley Whitman, in the giftshop and bought a tiny silver coffee pot.
Yan Shuo
Very comprehensive info about different tribes within AZ and NM states only, with people handcrafts works and artworks. And an exhibition about how they are treated during early ages and today. 80% of exhibition are on the ground floor. Do check the nice courtyard! Toys/puppets are discovery on our trip there!
judy kennedy
Beautiful sharing of Native Am art. Food and service in restaurant wonderful
Peter Franc
If you pay in advance it's $3 off. Amazing museum with a beautiful showing of both the dark side of the Native Americans in how they were initially treated and the beautiful way they overcame that with their art and heritage.
Danielle Spears
There are some incredibly beautiful things to see such as pottery, rugs, baskets and art. I guess I had different expectations. For example, I thought I'd get to see some headdresses, peace pipes and other traditional native American items. I am glad I went, I just left slightly disappointed.
Sue
Great exhibits about Native American history, culture and modern art.
John Nesbit
Must visits besides permanent gallery: the special art exhibit and upstairs history of Indian boarding schools.
Marshall Shore
The Indian School exhibit is amazing. Lots of beautiful items, many with messages.
Alex Zorn
The Heard Museum could less be described as a museum and more a compound dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Naitive Culture. After a day's visit, I can say that while I visited many parts, the whole would require many days to truly appreciate. A very nice experience overall, highly recommended.
wendy schneider
Wonderful museum, well maintained and very informative.
Judith Lee
Nice set up lots of Native American art work located in down town Phoenix and close to the art museum. They have a nice collection of Kachina dolls , native clothing and cool to see the the fire place the used for cooking , because I went at 4 didn't have a lot of time I would say you need.
Carolyn C Valdez
Great day exploring the collections at the Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix. Artifacts include art from both Native American and indigenous tribes from around the world. We were lucky enough today to watch hoop dances from the Hopi tribal members.
Jon K
Good tours, more of a museum you go to once than repeat again and again because some things can be redundant for informational purposes. If you haven't been definitely go and learn!
April Elliott
Beautiful museum and great exhibits. The exhibit on the Navajo rugs and blankets is very fascinating. They have the largest display of Katsina dolls I have ever seen. So many talented artists. I also learned a lot in the exhibit on boarding schools - really opens your eyes.
Leonardo D.
Such an interesting place that as soon as your in their courtyard you get a serene vibe. Worth checking it out!
Veronica Longoria
I love this museum 🫶🏽 every time is such a great experience.
Mary Beth Garhart
A must-see stop in Phoenix. A well-curated museum displaying the art and culture of native people around the US. The Indian Training School exhibit is particularly fascinating.
Johnny LittleWolf
Clean Well Organized and Respectful of 1st Nations People. 🙌🏽❤🦅🐺 …
Linda Strong
This is a wonderful place to visit. The people are very friendly and helpful. The museum gift shop has quality items for sale.
Michael Witte
I was a little thrown off by the hefty charge to enter - I think 18$ for general admission. But they have student/senior/AAA discounts so was not terrible.
Definitely worth the trip though - amazing art work and craftsmanship. The docents did a really good job too -- we were there with a large family grouo and the staff went above and beyond my expectations.
Christine
I loved the Heard Museum. My husband and I went on a Sunday. Their hours on that day were from 11am to 4pm. This was a great place to visit if interested in the American Indigenous people. The galleries were well spaced so that one did have plenty of time to peruse the artwork. One could study the different types of material that different pieces were created on.
We went upstairs to see that exhibit consisted of the history of how the white man decided that boarding schools were the best way to indoctrinate the young Indian children to the White man's ways. This was difficult exhibit to see. However it is one where the white man can see how far the Indian peoples have shown us our cruelty can be overcome.
Our last stop was in the cafeteria which was very enjoyable. I highly recommend this stop while in Phoenix.
Mike F
The Heard Museum is a 2 story building that looks much bigger on the inside than outside. There are many items to look at with a lot of open space within the buildibg so you don't feel like people are on top of you while you enjoy the exhibits. we spent an hour on each floor and about 40 minutes looking around the grounds, gift shop, book store & cafe.
Yeachan Choi
I recommend checking out the boarding school exhibition. This shows how a person's life as a native American is shaped by govermental policies.
Deseree Mitchell
Amazing masks by Matisse. Truly phenomenal fusion of Alaskan Native art meeting famed French impressionist.
James Williams
A world-class museum. Enjoyed sitting on the courtyard, sipping a prickly pear lemonade and soaking in the native American flute music. There is a delightful little bookstore. It would take a person several days to enjoy all of the exhibits on hand. Also enjoyed a hoop dancing demonstration.
Marie Ekpema
I learned a lot about Native American history at this place. Really eye opening and I plan to visit again the next time I go to Phoenix. I recommend going upstairs to see the exhibit on the school. The exhibit tells a story that most Americans will never see on television or see in history books about the experience of Native Americans. I also liked the fact that most of the art was by Native Americans and you can support them if you choose.
Ramon Dalangyawma
I think this was a good year in a long time. Although I have not calculated my sales, yet. Saturday was a good, today it started a little slow and somewhat picked up a little bit more towards closing. I am happy with this years market. I thank all of you who makes this show possible and I'm very very thankful that you invited me back again. I hope to get invited again for next year and on into the future, while I am still able to make my jewelry.
Jill Curiel
Wasn't kid-friendly enough for our 1st-3rd grades field trip. Kids were ready to leave after 1 hour.
K. Dori McCracken
This museum has a stunning collection of Native American art and artifacts. A docent gave a fascinating tour that covered tribes of the area through history. I could have spent days there happily!
Nicole Nez
Incredible Indian Market in March. Tons of Native American art of all kinds including a great showcase of contemporary art and fashion. I can't wait to go back and take in more of the museum collection and shows.
Dawn Beckford
My now favorite museum! Wonderful exhibits!
Janet Ferguson
Well curated venue for southwestern native American history and art . Exhibits honor various tribes and culture. If you are someone who reads the display information plan on 4 to five hours. There is a cafe for lunch and a museum store . The museum store has authentically crafted rugs and jewelry created by Native American craftsmen .
Katalin Ehling
Fantastic. Have not been for four years. Excellent exhibits.
Julie Goldammer
We participated in a docent led tour which was fabulous. Our guide took us through the different exhibits featuring the indigenous areas in Arizona and New Mexico. The tour lasted about an hour and we were a relatively small group of about a dozen people. We later spent some time on our own in other galleries. There were so many interesting details to learn about. My favorite parts were the sand painting and Katsina doll collection. We've been to the museum several times before, but this was a treat. I highly recommend taking a tour like this when you go.
Cynthia Fabian
This museum is one of my favorites. I have been visiting since childhood. It has beautiful native works from throughout history as well as exclusive temporary exhibitions and works by modern native artists. I just went to to see the extraordinary Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera art exhibit that is showing through late August. The Heard is the only place in North America that this exhibition will be seen. It is a rare chance to see rare works by these incredible artists that have not been seen by the public much as they're from a private collection. I was personally thrilled by the work and commend the museum for exhibiting these kinds of collections. I am spoiled living so near such a treasure, but for anyone who may visit from other states or countries I highly recommend the Heard Museum as a must see stop in the southwest.
Jacqueline Zendejas
Amazing art work. Must see if you're in Arizona.
Susan E
We visited on a day when an Indian festival was happening, so we saw some performances of singing and dancing, along with lots of beautiful jewelry and art for sale. We ate some delicious fry bread.
Inside, the exhibits were interesting. We spent a lot of time learning about the residential schools, which was very eye-opening for my 19-year-old.
P Tim
If you are interested about native people, it's a place to go to get lots of information and what they used in past to survive and some history as well
Denis Moi Kiprotich
Unique museum that showcases the Indian struggles, American history and culture..
Jeffrey Biros
The museum is well thought out and very informational! I visited with my cousin and his wife while I was in Phoenix. We visited the museum on Thursday July 12, 2018 at 1 pm MST. I would rate the museum highly! The young man at the reception area who took our money--and I am sorry I didn't get his name--was not professional, however, and was rude and condescending. He seemed to be more interested in playing on his phone than answering our questions. He especially offended my cousin, who is a Vietnam War veteran, when he was asking about the price of admission. The young man just kept pointing to the prices and saying that it is all up there. He then began talking under his breath that it really wasn't that difficult to read the prices. We did let the young man know that he was unprofessional and I let a staff person know as well. Other than that unfortunate incident, we all enjoyed the museum!
Daniel Hammerberg
Well worth the price of admission. The hours were a limited. Masks are required throughout the museum.
Lisa Hall
Tribal rugs exhibit was amazing. Would like to see more info on East coast tribes. Indian School was well done. Powerful.
Michael Anderson
One of the best and most informative museums/galleries I've ever visited.
JIM FREEMAN
This is a small museum focused on Native American art and history. Our latest visit was for the special exhibit of Freda Kahlo and Diego Rivera and was excellent.
Teericka Kimbrough (Tkimbrough4)
Beautiful collection and knowledgeable staff
RK Tucker
Great museum is a good showcase of our native American culture
Brandon Keith
Had a very nice time out of the heat. Learning about the southwest and plains tribes. It is a very nice collection of artifacts. Put together nicely. Will be coming back again. Lots to learn!!
Manish Mosalpuri
The best place to know about the Native American people and their culture. Definitely recommend.
Javier Jimenez Serrano
Superb museum. I wish it opened longer. I learned about the Indian schools here. So harrowing
From ancient artifacts to modern pieces…very much worth visiting
Mike Teller
Very nice, interesting and educational and shows how Phoenix AZ area used to look like in the early days. Fascinating artifacts and pictures and arts and crafts.
Amy Wilson
We really enjoyed our visit. It was such a good experience and a great opportunity to knows about art and some history about indigenous people.
Alice Finnamore
Lots of beautiful art. Bright spacious place. Kind and helpful staff.
Brian M.
The Heard Museum offers two tours every hour or so. one is a little longer than the other. The tours are excellent. Their tour guides must volunteer for 9 months before they are allowed to take people on the tour. Their knowledge of what you're looking at is invaluable. So disappointed last week when I took my son for his first visit and they no longer offer the tours I think it's due to covid. I told my son just walking around looking at Indian stuff is about 5% of the experience that you would get with a tour. I hope they bring back the tours
Joe S.
Amazing art and historical information. A must-see for those visiting Phoenix.
Theron Cook
The last time I was at the heard Museum was about 40 years ago they have done a great job at preserving Native American artifacts
Rebecca
A must-see place in Phoenix. Beautifully designed building with quiet courtyards. I felt so peaceful being there. Learned lots of history about the indigenous American people.
Will C.
Their "Home" exhibit features artifacts and information from the tribes of Arizona. As an archaeologist new to the Southwest I found it to be very helpful.
jlom ex
Very good place, the guided tours are amazing. Definitely worth it. The expo on the education camps it's an eye opener on history.
Nigel Brett
Clean and interesting Native American museum with a great collection of enthusiast level native art. Pretty building, cool exhibits.
Tony White
The Heard is a beautiful museum. Amazing works of art, events, and people. There are also stories, amazing and tragic. If you haven't been and you are still on the fence, try it on a First Friday. Last night (February's First Friday) they had a jazz ensemble playing as we walked around. I was blown away by a painting by Shonto Begay...he evoked a masters work and told a local story. You won't regret checking out the Heard Museum.
david Hicks
One of our favorite places to visit and explore the art from the indigenous people in our Southwest area. We have so much to be thankful for in Phoenix, especially the beauty given to us by the people who first knew this land.
Jackie La Fave
Lots of tribal history and origin stories. Beautiful artwork!
Carina Hernandez
Went for first Friday of the month, as it was free admission. I definitely want to go back and pay the price of admission. It's definitely worth it. There is so much to take in and educate yourself about. Highly recommend visiting, whether you are already interested in Native American art or not. Very highly recommend if you aren't familiar at all. Beautiful patio areas. I wish more people visited museums, it's really worth it. We will be coming back to see more of the exhibits!
Leenil Noel
Best gift shop. Guaranteed authenticity. I cannot afford the stuff though.
Jeff Anderson
A must go. Beautiful grounds, gift shop, cafe, and native American cultural center. Right in downtown Phoenix.
Diane Scharpf
The heard museum is fantastic for indigenous peoples history and art. The Frida Kahlo exhibit was exceptional.
Jenna Boettger Boring
This is an absolutely beautiful museum filled with some amazingly curated things. I feel like it often gets overshadowed by the Phoenix Art Museum, (which I love) but this place is a gem. Keep an eye on the website for the rotating exhibits and temporary stuff, this place has a tendency to get some very very cool things that I feel like I would be unlucky to get to see otherwise. It is also part of a few museum reciprocal programs, making it an even better deal if you get a membership.
Molly Jacobs
You could spend a couple hours or half a day here. It's a wonderful museum filled with Native American art from many tribes. Sometimes there are performances outside. Go early and you might snag an artistic poster. Make sure you go the right way through the boarding school experience and brace yourself for the horror that children and families were forced to endure. The pain is evident on their faces.
Damian Humphreys
An indepth look into various Valley tribes, their traditions and history. We couldn't fit it into one visit, so will return again.
Tribal music was playing upon our evening arrival which set the tone. Our children were mesmerized by the tapestries, coming up with possible stories that they could have meant.
A must see for anyone who wants to understand a different culture.
Bruce McAttee
The Heard is one of the Gems of Phoenix, experience the the deep Native culture of Arizona and the learn about the History of our indiginous brothers and sisters. I strongly recommend a visit during the Christmas season and take in a day of story telling and Native Dance.
David Stone
Very very cool. Incredibly educational. I recommend to anyone, but especially to those that didn’t grow up or live near Native American communities or reservations. They do such a great job at showing a way of life that is completely foreign to many people.
Theresa Schmitt
A must-see when in Phoenix. The exhibits are second to none and they rotate enough that it never gets stale.
Angela Allison
Such a beautiful museum, artwork and experience. Very nice staff as well. If you are in the Phoenix area visiting or live by, this museum is such a great place to go to for education and inspirational artwork
Mia A
Educational. Native American history.
Beautiful outdoor seating to enjoy coffee
Joelson Leal
Loved the experience at the Heard Museum. I was able to learn more about Native American history in Arizona. I especially love the "Away from Home" gallery.
Angie K
Love this museum, enjoy the displays and education. Beautiful spot to sit and have cool drink and museum shop has so many stunning pieces
Roger Thomas
Amazing artwork and history of Indian Boarding Schools
Hydrocurve87
Heard Museum in Phoenix AZ.. has one of the largest collections of Native American artifacts and works of renown artists past and present. The floor layout is welcoming and accommodating. Oils, sculptures, and weavings are of the most beautiful and possibly the rarest collections ever seen. I recommend Heard Museum for an enjoyable day out of fun and education with restaurants and live entertainment (at designated times) I'll be going back.
John Dyke
Great museum to learn about local Native American cultures!
Michele Mabry
I love the beautiful old pottery, baskets, cradles and artwork. I visited last year and didn't get to see everything, so returned alone last week and stayed for 3 hours to soak everything in. As a Native American myself, the Boarding School exhibit was a little hard to go through, but glad the real story is there for all to see. The history within the museum is amazingI learned so much. Great book store, gift shop, cafe, and outdoor courtyard sculptures, especially the War memorial. I have visited a few Native American museums throughout the U.S., and for me, this rates as one of the best!
Thomas Batts
Great museum. Go here. Very expansive and interesting.
Pro tip. Pick up "cultural passes" at the library to get free tickets to the Heart musceum. Or go on their free day once a month. Is it the second Friday? I dunno!! You'll have to look it up
Sarah Evanson-Isaac
On the late side for museum so we only visited courtyard cafe. Delicious generous meal salads and awesome prickly pear lemonade and iced tea combo-- an even better than usual Arnold Palmer-- served in a peaceful courtyard with the sound of water and song birds in the background.
Rory Hubbard
Great place to wander......
Aaron Garcia
Beautiful exhibits and a very educational section about the Indian boarding schools that taught me things I never knew before. Very well laid out. Takes about 3-4 hours to wander through everything, but definitely would try to go a couple times to make sure you have enough time to really appreciate all the exhibits.
Kim Hartman
Super clean and well kept. Great guided tour with loads of information.
John Nettleton
Fine Native American Art and a nice cafe in a courtyard with fountains.
Alex Garcia
Well organized with a helpful and knowledgeable staff. Beautiful display of artifacts and stunning display of art and jewelry for sale in their gift shop. I can't say enough about this place. It's more than a museum when you include a bookshop and eatery.
jhonny resendiz
Love the Frida kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibition plus some other works by Rufino Tamayo and also by David Alfaro Siqueiros, I hope they keep bringing more exhibits of this kind to the museum.
Gabriel Salomon Ramirez
Beautiful hacienda style building with a quaint courtyard. Grab a coffee and learn the history of the United States from the native source. Must see for Phoenix.
Susan Jones-Sink
If visiting Phoenix the Heard Museum is a must visit! It's beautiful, informative and a national treasure.
Paul Pasker
Very nice museum. The grounds and many different seating areas were beautiful. It is easy to lose yourself meandering throughout the many exhibits.
Kathy Komatz
Amazing SW art and history! This is a must-see when you visit Phoenix!
Bethanie Parshall
This museum was way more than I expected. Upon arrival, I was asked if I wanted an introduction and I said yes. The man working was happy to tell me all about the museum. There is much to learn here and is easily a very emotional experience. The layout is great and very informative.
Petrona Zickgraf
Larger than expected. Beautiful pieces. I was moved to tears by The Boarding School experience.
Craig Perry
Very interesting museum. Many artifacts to look over.
Carlos V
Writing this during the Frida Khalo Diego Rivera exhibit. If you read this while they still have this exhibit you should go. The building is absolutely beautiful and everyone should go for the things on permanent display.
Maryam Khan
The tour guides are amazing. Make sure to catch a tour while you're here. A wealth of knowledge you don't get from just walking around the musuem.
Michael Turner
Went for the American Indian Fair & Market on Saturday with a full day of traditional dances, singing, arts and crafts and food. 2nd time coming and will return again. Bring cash for food vendors but cards are otherwise ok. Parking is tough but can be found on neighborhood streets nearby.
Marjan Kaykavoosi
Best Museum for native Indian art
Snapshot Photo Booth
Excellent venue for any occasion! Great staff and amazing food.
Roxann Herrera
Great educational museum. Learned so much about the native american boarding schools.
Anthony Opiola
I had an amazing time at the Heard museum. Artifacts, pottery, katsinas, jewelry, etc. Hopi, Navajo, Apache, Cochiti, and many others.
Kyndall Kohan
I love this place. Living in Phoenix this was my go to place to take my visitors from out of state. Anyone whom would ask me what to do in Phoenix I would recommend this museum. The gift shop is amazing and has one-of-a-kind pieces and artwork. The staff and volunteers are amazing. The art and artifacts are gorgeous.
Velia Minjarez
The Indian tribes with videos and fabulous display of art, pottery, sculpture and more was fantastic. We had coffee afterwards listening to music on the patio
So worth visiting!
Ian Allen
Exceptional museum that totally surpassed my expectations. They had a great deal for students—I think I paid $9 with my student ID—but I would have happily paid the full price considering the quality of this museum. The exhibit on the boarding schools is probably worth the price of admission alone—a well thought out, immersive, informative, and heartbreaking exhibit. Only downside was one of the tours we joined had a docent that I would describe as...under-informed—we quickly darted out of the [free] tour. They had quite a few going all day and I'm sure many of the other docents are great we were just a little limited on time. All in all, this was an incredible visit and we both agreed one of the better museums we've visited recently, highly recommended!
Jama Goodman
Nice historic museum. Great tour guide.
Kelsey
Frida Khalo exhibit was lovely! A little pricey though (25$). The rest of the museum was just ok
Marilyn Hutton
Used a culture pass from the public library for free admission. Lots of exhibits and artifacts to look at. Great family activity during the summer to stay out of the heat.
Roxana Espinoza
Great place to visit to learn about Native American history
Jussane Clifford
I Love the Heard Museum! A must go to if you come to Phoenix. The exhibitions are beautiful. Some of them are eye opening. The kachina dolls are beautiful, the pottery and Navajo rugs are breathtaking. Stop by the cafe and the gift shop afterward.
Kathy O
I had a great evening wondering the fabulous exhibits. For a First Friday it wasn't very busy (First Friday is free admission). I did NOT enjoy the super loud dj music on the front lawn and dining patio areas. It didn't fit the ambiance of the museum.
Kerry K
The exhibit on Indian Schools is a must see. This is a fantastic museum.
Gerard Powell
Great displays of the Native Culture. Actual Native tour guides would give this museum authenticity.
Bobby and Sally
Very nice museum with very informative displays including several informative videos in a small theater room. We especially enjoyed the second floor exhibit on the boarding schools to assimilate native American Indians, it was very informative and honest. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time, we got there two hours before closing and didn't get to see everything we wanted to.
Mark Schonwetter
Great museum of Native american culture. Gallery guides are very knowledgeable and helpful. Beautiful sculpture garden. Plenty of parking. Special and permanent exhibits. Snack shop food is limited and very good. Cafe has been closed due to COVID.
Michał Maj
Amazing place - a must see when in Phoenix!
Christina King
It was pretty cool. Some very beautiful pieces of all different types of native American art. We were on limited time so didn't get to see upstairs, but everything we did see was pretty cool
Eva
Great place to learn about the Natives' history and the sad truth about the effects of colonization.
Russell Stambaugh
We particularly enjoyed the George Caitlin prints of plains Native Americans made in the 1840's and a temporary exhibit featuring Southwestern, especially Navajo and Hopi silver work.
Todd H
Enjoyed our visit here. Great diversity of native american and other art.
Peggy Hunt
Marvelous collection of native items, but...museum was more about the individual donor collections, lighting is really poor & information about items is difficult to read because of poor lighting & info placed too low and behind glass that could use cleaning on the inside.

When exploring downtown Phoenix, don't forget to look up!👀 👆
Or you might just miss the famous downtown brown bears located on the side of the heard museum building!🐻🐻
•
The nevercrew has been painting murals for 20 years but, they only have a couple in the United States and this is their first in Arizona. 🌵 ☀
The bears represent the Mexican brown bear which has become extinct and the black forms on them represent forms of communication that are no longer used or extinct in their own way.
Below the bears and partially hidden by the building next door, are a row of rather strange looking machines. These appear to also have something to do with communication...
The Mexican grizzly bear is an extinct subspecies of Brown bear. Some accounts suggest that they were found in large numbers in the early 1900’s in its native range. It was one of the biggest and largest mammals found in Mexico. In 1982, the IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature) released a paper declaring that the Mexican grizzly bear is extinct. This species of bear was found in parts of the United States and Mexico. In Mexico, they inhabited the states of Baja, Sonora and Chihuahua. In the United States, they were found in New Mexico and parts of Arizona.
Susan Gammon
This was my fourth visit, and, by far, the best. It was organized and had expanded exhibits. The Indian School exhibit was so well done, I didn't even have time to get through it all. I can't wait to go back!
Marta Davis
Went specifically to see "Larger Than Memory" exhibit....It was amazing!! It closes today 1-3-21 and I didn't want to miss it. No need to worry about social distancing...excellent safety procedures in place at The Heard Museum! I felt very comfortable and safe.
Tammy Davis
It was so beautifully done and I enjoyed the awesome exhibits. I learned so much about the boarding schools. I had no idea!
We had lunch at the cute Cafe outside. It was delicious 😋
Nicole
We went for an event they held with people dancing.
It was beautiful. My daughter loved when the ladies showed her how to dance.
It was such a great experience. The museum itself is clean and well kept with a variety if different items.
Its really interesting to look around and worth going to if you've got an afternoon
The toilets are accessible.
Teddie Redwing
The handiwork in weaving rugs, basketry, the craftsmanship of jewelry, of Kachina, astounded me. I also toured Boarding School history, I thought it pertained to real people, relatives, of my days, and in light of the graves of thousands of Indigenous children. I also enjoyed a fabulous luncheon.
Ray Brown
Love this place. It's a must see and experience. If you go check out the Native boarding school area. It made me sad
Eric Ryan
Great collection of native art - both new and historic. Some of the contemporary art is stunning. Don't miss the exhibit upstairs about the Indian boarding schools.
L W
A great place to see some historic pictures
Ron Thomas
Museum done right! Very stately please with a very moving exhibit on Indian Schools. Nothing they taught me in school! Lots of art and historical artifacts from local indigenous nations.
REAL Retail Co.
Give yourself 3 hours and leave phone in car! Awesome set up they have.. don't leave without getting a Apple Fritter from cafe!
Enrique Gutierrez
Very good information and history. The building about the Indian Schools was a hit in the gut.
Website does not indicate free admissions on 1st Friday after hours. We found out on a review but not about the hours. Neither is there mention of military discount program.
Cheryl Perkins
Really interesting. Learned alot. Beautiful art
Joey Hinton
Fantastic museum with great collection of older and newer Native American art.
Rebecca Carrier
Great exhibits, well worth the time.
Laura Kiefer
Wow! This museum is so beautiful and full of information! Very clean! The staff was so friendly and helpful! Our tour guide for the southwest (older gentlemen with great sense of humor) made the tour so much fun and kept my attention. He knows his history and is very credible with his experience. Thank you for making this memorable!!!!!
Chris Brobin
The exhibition on the Indian Schools was informative and disturbing.
Robert Alvarez
This is a must stop in phoenix. Great all year long, and especially during performances.
Neal Gerlach
I love me a good museum, and they did not disappoint. I was interested in learning about the history of the area and walking through the exhibits was an education. They take you on an incredible journey through time.
Virginia Allen
World class Tour and displays of native American people's art.
Ashley Mae Morris
Definitely a day trip. We went for about 3 hours, and could have spent double that. Well thought out museum that highlights local indigenous artists working in traditional mediums, and incorporates their family stories into the item descriptions.
That gift shop is trouble!
Karleen Jung
We only had a couple of hours and it wasn't enough time to cover this really wonderful collection of native American art and other exhibits. However, don't miss the exhibit of contemporary textiles! You'll be amazed at the skill of the artist in making these beautiful woven works! I'll be stopping back in next time I'm in Phoenix.
Julia
I have been here twice and loved it each time. It gives you so much information about Native Americans and helps you appreciate their art.
Rebecca Conway
The museum is laid out to let you flow through the exhibits. I enjoyed learning and seeing all of the native American exhibits at the museum. The art on display includes early artifacts like pottery and trade items, dolls and silver jewelry. Truly a beautiful experience.
Timothy Keneipp
My wife and I recently rejoined as Heard Museum members having been absent for many years. We have missed going and are glad to be back in the fold. The exhibits are the best in a long time and we are looking forward to being part of the museum family.
wanda smith
If you love Indian history, art, pottery, and baskets, this is the best. It was a shame how our nation treated the Indians. I hope this museum will never let us forget.
Jeffrey L Ewing
I was blown away with the history on display. But as a African American I felt connected .
Monique F
Amazing facility and exhibits everytime, all the time.
Mary Barnett
Spent a couple hours here looking at clay pots. Amazing collection. The architecture is really amazing. The courtyards are gorgeous. There’s a books and more shop with coffee and baked goods, a courtyard cafe, and a museum shop with really amazing Native American art. I highly recommend. Lots of parking and beautiful outdoor areas.
Esther Garcia O'Hare
I hadn't been to the Heard Museum since I was a kid, so I was very impressed with what I saw. The artwork was beautiful and diverse; everything from traditional weavings to modern mixed media art. I liked that tribal affiliations were noted on the various pieces. I also attended the Native American Art Show and Market. The artists were there, and were very approachable. Great traditional dancers, with an emcee who described the meaning of the dances. Plenty of food booths. Lots of seating areas. Great experience!
Ashley Hall
Excellent museum with many great exhibits. Learned a lot! The courtyard is also lovely; I got a coffee from the cafe and sat on a bench in the shade and it was very pleasant.
Anabelle Dayley
Love this place and the Frida and Diego exhibit was amazing!
Valerie Handlers
Gorgeous museum. Very educational Audio tour was very good. Beautiful things in the gift shop.
Audrey Huguley
The architecture of this museum alone is beautiful. I was deeply moved by the "Away from Home" but my favorite piece was the woman outside in the garden.
Savannah Jones
The BEST museum I've ever had the honor to visit. The stories they tell throughout and the beautiful exhibits of art and culture made me feel more emotions than I can articulate. Go and educate yourself in an amazing space.
Joseph Yow
My wife and I enjoyed our visit immensely. The collection of Southwestern Native American art and artifacts is very, very impressive. I was told that besides the many rooms of items on display, there are forty thousand plus items archived. They also have a library of scholarly work and primary source documents. We enjoyed a guided tour of the displays and the guide was very knowledgeable of the period pieces and of more recent and currently working artists who are celebrating the various groups and time periods. Besides the main museum, they have a performance space, a shop for regional artists to sell their pieces, mostly weaving and jewelry, a book shop, and two cafes. The outdoor spaces are inviting and quiet. We overheard a couple planning their wedding, to be in the courtyard. Well worth the time to spend a half day or more there.
Garrett S.
This museum offers a modern perspective on Native American art within the context of ancient artifacts.
Melissa Figueroa
Beautiful grounds, full restaurant inside, and one of the largest shops at a museum I have seen. I feel it is a hidden treasure as when I went it was 1st Friday, fewer people there than at the other galleries and museums. Great if you're wanting 1st Friday experience without the crowd. Plus they had an amazing live singer who sang traditional tribal songs. Very educational and fun exhibits.
Teresa Wallin
We had a wonderful time roaming around the living art displays talking to the artists today.
Alyssa Ruiz
Love this museum been coming here since I was a kid♥️
Tom Troyer
Amazing collection of Kashina dolls. Great place to spend a few hours. Free guided tours.
LM
One of the best museums I've been to. I learned more than I thought I would have. All of the art pieces, artifacts, archives, captions were all so interesting. They have complimentary small lockers and parking which was nice. I would definitely recommend.
Erica Soto
Nice museum
Not worth what we paid
Still a little confused on the purpose of the museum
I hope it is really 2 spread awareness of how bad the American Indians were treated & 2 help them or is this profit of what took from them hmmm.
Dont know -confused
Very sad 2 hear about the boarding schools I dont think that was a fair deal either ..
Mari Sol
This place is a gem if you have a love and respect for real Native American art or if you want to become more aware. The collections are outstanding. This museum is beautifully curated to highlight art in the Southwest as well as provides a unique perspective often ignored in other museums. I am proud that this museum exists in Phoenix.
Kathy Hagan
Our first time visit, wonderful informative experience.
Ian Buchan
Nice galleries of art and exhibits of ancient and more modern traditional artifacts. Beautiful setting, courtyard is a nice place to chill.
Robert Joyce
Exhibit is top tier. Reorient your understanding of native people and the historic, concerted, effort to eradicate indian culture.
The museum restaurant serves some of the best authentic southwestern food you can find.
Patricia Kurschinski
Beautiful display of American Indian art. Blankets, pottery, and jewelry.
Misty Livingston
Excellent variety of interesting exhibits displayed meticulously. Nice open walking spaces. Mix of modern and ancient pieces. Intimate performance stage with lots of interesting events. Wonderful outdoor courtyard space with birds and water fountains to enjoy a book from the book shop or bite from the café.
Janice Leistikow
This was an amazing experience. We almost didn't go because it was just one more museum but I am so glad we did. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. The docent who guided us in the first part of our visit was a wealth of information and it was clear she loved the history of the area. The sobering experience of the Indian Boarding School was the most important and impressive part of the visit. The pictures, artifacts, and recorded voices should be experienced by everyone who calls the USA home.
Robin Hall
This is a wonderful Museum featuring Native Americans of the South West. It was very interesting.
Devon Bowsher
Enjoyed it. Map stunk. I remember way more local history before.
Luis Montoya
Beautiful museum! I highly recommend it.
Susan Amundson
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We were very impressed with the facilities and the exhibits. The placement and legibility of the exhibit signage made it easy to navigate. Employees were knowledgeable and friendly. We received excellent service in the cafe and the food was delicious. The store personnel in Books and More were attentive and helpful. We highly recommend Heard Museum.
Vicki Miller
Incredible art, so much to learn about customs, history, traditions, and lifestyles. This was my second visit, I hope to be able to return every time I am in Phoenix.
Joseph Fazio
Great museum, dancers were awesome!
Tom Elwood
Beautiful setting, large collection of ceramics, weaving, beadwork, silver jewelry. Poignant and sobering display about Indian schools that forced young children away from their families to "civilize" them. This last display is not to be missed.
S A
Great experience, opening for the Hawaiian Surfing Exhibit
Diana Park-Alford
Baeautiful facilities. Not a huge art person but they have a lot to view with tins of history. Cafe open daily and a beautiful gift shop
Myra Kiger
The Heard Museum taught me just how ignorant I was when it comes to the Native Americans. I was deeply touched by the school exhibit, & can only imagine how awful it was for those Indian children. I loved the exhibit featuring the works of T.C. Cannon , & also the jewelry of Robert Chavez. I was amazed by the ledger drawings that survived from the 1800's, they were absolutely amazing!! I am not a fan of the city, but the Heard Museum was like a little piece of Heaven in the center of the city. It was peaceful & serene. The cafe was also wonderful. The food was excellent & the staff was very courteous. I plan to go back to the museum, as one cannot adequately see everything in a single day.
Joey Brown
Wonderful family experience!! It is a great opportunity to learn about the Native Americans who called this area home well before it was settled.
Your HighNess
This museum is a walk in history. The art, artifacts, pottery, jewelery, photos, experiences ect. take you on an emotional journey with the artist. The relics are beautiful and rare. The knowledge one can gain with a single visit is limitless.
Weronika Lo
A wonderful place to visit for anyone interested in learning about Native American tribes and their experiences through time. There are several exhibits that are very well done, multidisciplinary and multifaceted, relating to past and present artists. The building itself is lovely, with plenty of quiet outdoor sitting and a sculpture garden.
Sagar Kulkarni
Nice. Good guides, impartial and loads of knowledge. Highly recommended
Jacob Clough
The small collection was fun to view. Unfortunately, a couple exhibits we're closed when I went, so I wasn't able to view all that it has to offer. One exhibit that was particularly interesting/depressing/eye-opening was the one that explored the experiences of Native Americans who were taken away for boarding school. Something that could be better is adjusting the brightness of lights to correspond with how to best view the art.
Veronica Mete
It had been years since last I visited. I enjoyed going with my family.
N Lister
We enjoyed our visit very much. 😊 Everyone was very kind and attentive. Artists showing their artwork were fabulous and had much to share. Beautiful jewelry by Steve LaRance and his wife Marian. Loved it. 💕 …
Antonio Rubio
It was nice. We watched a show in the amphitheater about native American tribal dancing. Too many peopke for us to wanr to go in but it seems like they do well monitoring the capacity limits. Havent been since I was a child but happy to go and see the live shows and monuments outside. The cafe is also open still with outside seating
Krystle Raymond
Thank you to the marvellous tour guides operating Sunday afternoon. My experience couldn't have been better! My favourite part was the Indian School exhibit. As a Canadian we are also beginning to feature this dark time in our nation's history.
Judy Kaminen
A very comprehensive display of Native American artifacts and history. I especially appreciated seeing and learning about the Indian Boarding schools, a sobering and expressive exhibit of cultural genocide. I recommend this museum on your "must do" list when in Phoenix.
Jennifer Boughton
The information in the museum was well-presented but focused more on specific events and restoration of tribal ways and artifacts. There wasn't much about day-to-day living, which is what we we're hoping for. Also the arrangements of the exhibits was a little awkward and hard to navigate. Still, this museum is a must-see, especially for those who might not be familiar with the historical (and current) attitudes of white Americans toward Native Americans/First Nations.
Be aware that this is not a good place to bring young children, and be prepared to have some in-depth conversations with any children you do bring here - the boarding school exhibit is not graphic or visually disturbing, but by its nature can be somewhat distressing or at least thought-provoking. Even adults should allow some time to process this experience; don't jump right into another activity after touring this museum.
J
I visit the heard museum every time I go to phoenix. Beautiful art. When the Frida Kahlo exhibit was in town I waited for maybe a half hour to get in, but that was back in 2018
