Absolutely beautiful scenery. We did the mansion tour and the grounds access and there was so much to explore. It was really cool to feel you are walking through history and learn about the lives of everyone who lived there. I would recommend about 3 to 4 hours to do everything. We came around 4 and did not have enough time to see everything. I enjoy history and reading everything so it does take me a bit longer to get through everything. If you like just looking at pictures may need a little less time! But definitely give yourself enough time so you do jot have to rush! Would recommend.

We had time between arrival and check in so we decided to stop and lock the grounds. We had about an hour wait before I could tour the mansion. There's plenty to do from the museum to the wine tasting to walk in the grounds to make that time go by very quickly. The grounds are gorgeous. All of the varieties of trees are very interesting. Thinking that some of them are hundreds of years old is incredible.

We chose to do the VIP tour. It was great. I really enjoy having a knowledgeable person explain to me what I am looking at. Otherwise, I just blow past everything too quickly. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. I could just spend the day walking outside enjoying the plants, wildlife, and scenery. The house is really well preserved with a lot of the original stuff. It was very impressive. We learned a lot about Jackson. His story is quite impressive. I'm so glad we visited. This is one of the better presidential places we have been.

I have lived 15 minutes away from here for 20+ years, yet never been here! Over 1100ac on the Hermitage once lived in by Andrew Jackson and his extended family and workers. Definitely do the carriage ride tour and museum tour! Lots of opportunities for some pics and a great history lesson. It’s so beautiful this time of year!

The tour was straight to the point, didn't take forever either, maybe 30 minutes. The walk around the whole area was pleasant, and there's even a horse carriage ride you can take, don't know if you have to pay as I didn't take it. The price, in my opinion, was hefty for a little piece of history, coming in at $24 per adult. But it was a very nice day out so walking around and looking at old buildings was kind of relaxing. As for what there is to look at, it's mainly Andrew Jackson's house with a few buildings you can walk into but there's not much in them and they're very small, I believe they have an event we're they play some older sport. The gift shop was mediocre, mainly books about stuff other than the president. There's "Wine Tasting" but no one was in there when I went in so, can't give you details on that, sorry! Overall, it was a good way to waste a few hours of my day, enjoyably. P.S. Also, I met two awesome folks from PA during the tour and got my picture with them, however I forgot their names, if you two guys are reading this, feel free to follow me on here and I'll try and find a way to get in touch!

Excellent displays and film. Very up to date. Tour of the house was great, much more enjoyable with actual people explaining the rooms. Got to pick actual cotton! Free Audio guide via cellphone worked great for touring the grounds. Learned a lot and peaked our interest to learn more about Gen Jackson.

We looked around in the museum for a bit and then we did the mansion tour. The house was beautiful and the people in charge of the tour were very knowledgeable about Andrew Jackson and his house. We also walked out to where some of his slaves lived and he treated them pretty well. It was a beautiful day when we went and I'm thinking of coming back in the future. I would recommend this place to anybody who would want to know more about our seventh president.

We had a beautiful April evening to cruise the river! The entertainment was so much fun to listen to and watch. There was a lot of talent on that stage. We enjoyed getting to know the people sitting at our table, and food was good and filling. I especially enjoyed the dessert with a cup of coffee!

Amazing home with lots of history about Andrew Jackson and his home. We did half hour mansion tour which included the grounds. They also have self guided audio tours which you can download on your phone in which you can roam around the grounds on your own. We also went onto the horse drawn tour. We spent about 5 hours here and just took our time wandering the grounds. Keep an eye. You may see a bunch of turkeys or a mole burrowing in his hole.

I actually really enjoyed the history and experience here. The docents were great & the preservation is so amazing. The weather was perfect in late October to walk the grounds & see the different locations they've kept as part of the property. Don't skip the garden, cemetery or walking out towards the fields.

He provided the history while we walked there and gave us an extensive knowledge of exactly why Jackson called this his home. Walking the grounds on a beautiful day made it perfect. We only had time to tour the mansion, but it was well worth the tour. The inside of the museum is ornate and grand, as you would expect, but Jackson definitely showed his frugalness in some of the smaller details. We had Nick S as our tour guide and he did a great job, we loved our tour and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good tour.

We picked a cold day to go but it was so worth it. We didn't see all the grounds so it's a perfect reason to go back. I also learned a lot about him that I didn't know. They have discounts for Veterans and Seniors. Well worth going the museum is fantastic and the house it's self is amazing with so much original things in there like wallpaper of all things it's still beautiful.

Andrew Jackson is an interesting, complicated character. Visiting The Hermitage, we learned a lot about the former president and got to tour the mansion as well as the beautiful grounds. However, we were also able to tour slave quarters on the property and learn much about their life at The Hermitage. Of particular interest was the story of Alfred Jackson, a man who was born a slave at The Hermitage, became a free man during the Civil War, but returned to The Hermitage after the war to serve as a caretaker. The cabin in which he lived as caretaker as well as his burial site can be viewed during the walk around the grounds. The philosophy of The Hermitage appears to be to present the actual history of Andrew Jackson and his home, including the good and the bad, and allow each individual to make his or her own judgments. Staff members were all helpful and knowledgeable, and the tour guides were quite interesting. I left The Hermitage learning more about the former president as well as the history and culture of his time.

Second oldest museum in the United States, President Andrew Jackson’s home is a site to see. His final resting place as well. Going back in time is an adventure here. The grounds are unique and worth experiencing. If you enjoy history this will be an enjoyable and stimulating trip down memory lane.

Absolutely wonderful and well worth the somewhat steep pricetag. Compared to other area attractions that cost more- this has far more value. What a beautiful property. I highly do NOT recommend coming July if you can avoid it but it's worth the stop. Just don't push it too far, we did lol. Make sure you bring water in. You'll regret it if you don't.

It was a great experience going through Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage! Got to learn a lot about the life of America’s seventh President which the Hermitage has a lot of great tour guides on site that tell you about anything so I definitely recommend taking a tour of the inside of Andrew Jackson’s home! It’s really beautiful with 90% of the things inside the home is all originally from the former President! Good place to spend a few hours in Nashville!

The guided tour of this historical estate was fabulous! Characters were dressed in period costumes and were delightfully knowledgeable while effectively educational! I really appreciated that there were so many artifacts preserved here. I especially loved that multiple perspectives were conveyed regarding the history.

The Hermitage, the 1,000+ acre site was owned by Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, from 1804 until his death at the Hermitage in 1845. It also serves as his final resting place. We enjoyed the mansion and grounds tour. The staff were nice and informative. No photography in the house.

We purchased tickets to tour the grounds. It also provides information to download an app on your phone for the AUDIO tour while you're walking. They have markers numbered telling you what audio clip you should be listening to. Going in the mansion wasn't part of our tour, but there are several doors open with plexiglass that you can look in. The kitchen & smoke house do have buttons you can push to hear an audio about them. The entrance to the garden with the Myrtle's draping over the walking path is breath taking. Uncle Alfred (Jackson loyal slave) "cabin" was sitting right behind the mansion. They have a board talking about him. For me when I stepped in it hit me pretty hard knowing I was standing in a man's prison. Yes, I know Jackson was known as the people's President but, they were still slaves. And it laid on my heart heavy. History is amazing to learn & see, some of it to be proud of & celebrate. But some of it should be taught to never go down that road again.

We lived the Hermitage. The house tour gave a lot of history on Andrew Jackson. Although he did some things I don't agree with it was 1804-1845 so things were different. It was nice to see out bldgs and history of not only Jackson, but his slaves and land.

Absolutely worth a visit for anyone who's interested in history. The grounds are very well kept and offer a few walking paths to explore. I definitely recommend walking to the back of the park and checking out the area where the slave quarters were. It was quiet back there and not many people seemed to venture that way. Also make sure to take the time and do the mansion tour to see some truly authentic artifacts. I also recommend booking tickets online. We did not, and had to wait nearly two hours for the next available for tour.

We attended the Sip of History event. Tickets included unlimited samples from over 20+ distilleries. Every vendor was friendly and knowledgeable. The bonus was that you can explore the grounds while sipping samples and learning about history.

A CD wonderful and well preserved mansion from the 19th century, house of president Andrew Jackson. You can enter the gardens and walk around the estate. The inside tour takes about 30 minutes and it is very nice to see how well things were preserved. Best to book the tour ahead of time, the mansion is not very big and groups are fairly small. Guides are dressed with periodic costumes. Really enjoyed it!

Really great experience! Must do if you are in the Nashville area. I learned so much and our kids loved it. There are several tour options you can do that all have varying costs. We added on a wagon tour that took you all through the plantation and down to the slave quarters. The guide on the wagon tour was amazing and full of knowledge. The tour guides at the house are all in costume and also have tons of knowledge about the Jackson family and the estate. Overall well worth the money and time. Plan to block out a couple hours for sure maybe more. There is some walking if you want to walk down to the original Jackson home. But it isn’t too far of a walk. Inside the house you have to be really careful to not touch anything even the walls because some of the wall paper is original. Our 2.5 year old did get a little bored inside the house tour but our 9 year old ate up all the history. We ate at the restaurant on site but we weren’t super impressed with it.

The estate, garden and mansion were all so beautiful! The tour guides were very knowledgeable and we learned so much! The gift shop was great and reasonably priced, and the wine tasting was a nice added bonus! I definitely recommend if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Nashville and do some touristy things.

We had a wonderful experience here with our homeschool group. Very informative, very age appropriate for elementary all the way through highschool. The tour and educational classes and films were excellent, but I wish the itinerary we had been given allowed for a more leisurely experience. We always felt like we were rushing from place to place and exhibit to exhibit to the point I felt the need to photograph the historical signs to read later to speed along and meet deadlines.

I wish we could have seen all the rooms on the guided mansion tour. It seemed that they split groups to make the most of the timed tours, but the information provided by the docent was great. Learned a lot and appreciated the narrated self walking tour of the grounds and garden. Such a beautiful property and really enjoyed learning about the history and background of Andrew Jackson. Also enjoyed the wine tasting at the end.

200 year old house on a plantation from the slavery Era. Quite an important part of history. Rooms are blocked off with glass screens to preserve the interiors. Enjoyed the stories told by staff about President Jackson.

Great experience! Tour guides were wonderful and very patient with the many “adults” who were unable to follow simple directions given prior to the tour. I’m going to help them out - stay off the original tulip poplar floors, there is PLENTY of carpet to stand on. They literally had to repeat this 3 times within the first 5 minutes and I can only imagine how frustrating that is. Be better visitors and listen!

Andrew Jackson’s home is well preserved. The tour is quite restricted to insure the house is not damaged by visitors. The grounds are beautiful and have kitchen, slave quarters, etc.

The house is extremely well kept for it's age and the garden in the back is incredible. When it comes to historical significance in America, this property is a must visit. The society in charge of this property has done a good job not hiding or glossing over any aspects of Jackson's life. Slaves were a big part of this farm and their stories are told in great detail throughout the tour. Definitely worth the ticket price, but just know there is plenty of walking if you want to see everything on the property.

Very Interesting...have more original artifacts than any other presidential estate you can visit. Beautiful grounds...you will have a bit of walking to tour the house and see the grounds, and wheelchairs cannot access 2nd floor of the house, but everything else is wheelchair accessible.

Incredible grounds! The tours were running a little behind so they give you a history on the porch about the house. The grounds are HUGE so wear comfortable shoes. Some paved and some stone paths. You walk far from the ticket booth to the house. Also we didn’t take a picture of the code to do the audio tour and couldn’t find it anywhere else on the grounds - so get it at the ticket booth! The tour guides were good - you have a different one depending on what area you are in.

So I really enjoy history. The fact that Jackson lived here and built two homes is pretty cool. The guid was perfect. The homes were really taken care of. There is so much information throughout the property that we learned a bunch about our 7th president. If you want Thu take your time and really enjoy it I world set aside 2 hours. That's the tour and walking around and reading about all the history.

A must see for everyone who needs a reminder of history pre-Civil War. We learned a lot about this President Jackson, his views and leadership. The mansion tour is quick, but I would not recommend it for kids under 9 or ten. The grounds are wonderful and kid friendly. The garden was my favorite. Take some time to meet our 7th president.

We spent 3 hours here and didn’t feel like we wasted time. Take your time and walk the entire property to see it all. The mansion was nice. The guided tour was good. The grounds were beautiful. The museum and film were very interesting. I wish we could have seen the Presidential part of the museum, but for some reason it was still closed due to “COVID”. Almost all of the Hermitage is outside so plan accordingly based on the weather. The wine tasting was decent, but the price per bottle was pretty high.

Loved the tour! Short and sweet which made it enjoyable for my kids who are 7&6. The wine bar was a nice touch (free tasting with tickets!) they had a main part of the museum down which is why I have it 4 stars. This part included a lot of his presidential artifacts which made the museum and exhibition just a hall of signs.

We really enjoyed the VIP tour. My son, who was 9 at the time, enjoyed it as well. Such a unique opportunity to visit the personal home of one of the most interesting Presidents in history. They talked about his great accomplishments, but also his flaws. I appreciated hearing both sides to this complex man. I’d recommend this for anyone interested to learn history, see history and be apart of that history. The grounds are beautiful, the house is well preserved and our guide was so kind and knowledgeable. He wasn’t afraid of any question. If you have 3 hours and are in Nashville, do stop by.

My husband and I enjoyed our visit here on October 1st. I didn't have overly high expectations when we came and was surprised how well laid out everything was! I found the museum particularly good and felt like they kept a balanced view and I learned quite a bit. The house tour was good also, it's not particularly long of a tour and you can't take pictures inside, but does not detract from your time. It was impressive to learn how much is still original to the house from Jackson's time there. If you enjoy presidential history, this is worth adding to your list! We took our time and had a picnic lunch and probably spent about 3 hours there.

History buffs will love this place. You get a feel for how and why certain decisions were made and a good feel for the complex man that Jackson was. The house is worth seeing and typical of mansion tours. The grounds are very nice with an informative audio tour that details the life of the times.

Great history, meandering the grounds do the house tour or both. You can't go into all the rooms as most of the house and contents are original. But the trails, landscape and history are fantastic. You can spend a day to half day here and still want to come back.

A fantastically preserved home of one of the most prolific and charismatic figures in US history. The grounds are immaculately cared for and transporting you back to the 1800s does not take much imagination. Well-represented are the stories and history of enslaved people here. Some nearby plantations should take note of the Hermitage’s example and reserve their estate for contemplation, reflection, and education into one of the gravest atrocities in human history. I commend the curator and staff here for bearing that in mind. One of my favorite places on the property is the quiet trail that rambles alongside the creek. Yesterday I went and it was pouring rain. You’d think it would be a deterrent but I had the most magnificent, peaceful walk. It will stick in my memory for a long time. My only complaint, and it’s not enough to detract from my overall rating, is the confusing layout of the audio tours. The signage does not help indicate where the start of one of three tours starts and where to go next. You might find a starting location that coincides with your audio playlist but walk down the natural path ahead and you could be way off. It would be best if the property map had different colored lines mapping out each trail. A simple fix but when I do a self-guided tour, I want to make sure I don’t miss anything. I don’t typically visit places like this more than once but I for sure will be back. If not just to walk the grounds and revel in its solitude.

Very interesting. Everyone was very courteous (except one of the guides who acted like he would prefer to be anywhere else). My wife need a golf cart ride from the visitor center to the house, and both ladies who transported us were very nice and engaging, as were the ladies in the visitor center and gift shop. Everyone made it a very pleasant and interesting experience, especially if you enjoy learning about American history.

SUMMARY. I did the Mansion Tour with my parents. It was incredible. So much history here. The mansion itself it gorgeous, and the grounds are vast and full of beauty. For $26, it is an absolute steal. Additionally, I was happy the estate made a real effort—and not just a superficial one—to discuss Jackson's role as a slave owner, which I mistakenly thought would be white-washed. That being said, there was little mention of his role in the Trail of Tears, which I think is an important part of his story (and America's) that was overlooked, in my opinion. Still, the visit was great and overall very informative. I highly recommend visiting. MANSION. You really feel like you're standing inside history when you're inside the mansion. Everything is so ornate, and the tour guides do a great job of explaining everything in detail. There are no pictures permitted inside the mansion, which is understandable, but you can snap photos from the outside in. Such a cool place. GROUNDS. The grounds themselves cover a huge swath of land. My parents and I spent a considerable amount of time walking around after the mansion tour. There are several stations that go into detail about what slaves endured while working the lands, which I was very happy to not see downplayed. I definitely recommend spending an hour or so walking around the grounds and reading up on the estate's controversial history. TOUR GUIDES. The tour guides were very nice and incredibly knowledgeable. Some were even dressed in Jackson-era clothing! This may not sound like a big deal, but it did a lot for the aesthetic, and I thought it was great and showed dedication! VALUE. The value is unreal. For $26 each we got a mansion tour and complete access to the grounds. Great deal! TAKEAWAYS. For $26, you have to check it out at least once (it was my parents' second time, and they still thought it was great). There's so much to take in—both historically and aesthetically—and the tour guides are an absolute wealth of information. The Hermitage does a good job of addressing one of the controversial issues surrounding Andrew Jackson: the fact he was a slave owner. The other main issue, his mistreatment of the Native population and the Trail of Tears, was largely unaddressed. Still, I recommend going, even if only to walk the grounds. I had gone on the "In their footsteps " tour in regards to the enslaved. The educational coordinating director was our tour guide and she did an amazing job in explaining the plantations history with it's people with respect and grace. She was incredibly informative and made the tour enjoyable! The whole area was gorgeous, clean and well kept. We also had a complimentary wine tasting afterwards. And it came with three tastings. The bartender was welcoming and friendly. It was definitely a wonderful stop for history and light walking.

Five stars for the museum grounds and preservation of The Hermitage. It was easy to find and a pleasant walk despite the scorching heat. Andrew Jackson's Hermitage is well preserved and beautiful. The mansion tour was very lackluster and somewhat disappointing. The tour guide didn't even know where our free wine tasting was...a big red flag. Another tour guide said it was in the first building area where we presented our tickets. Our tour guide was difficult to listen to and understand unfortunately. Maybe she was having a bad day. The tour groups seem to be disorganized and conflict with each other. I found myself overhearing other tour guides and groups since we were so close to each other in the mansion. I would have preferred the VIP tour, but it was sold out. I got more information about the Hermitage and Andrew Jackson online than the tour guide. This was a problem for me. The wine tasting was so so. I had to locate the place by asking the people in the ticket center area and another tour guide. Once I located it, I noticed there were no lines or anyone to direct me where to go. You just walk up to the crowded bar and show your ticket & ID. The lady giving the wine tasting gave the best service in the Hermitage. The gift shop staff were semi polite yet cold. One of the gift shop ladies at the cash register said she could not give me change for $20. I told her I only had a $20 bill. I just needed change for $5 to use the penny press machine. She forgot to give me pennies though. I had to remind her. She said she could only give me 20 pennies or less for change to use for the penny press machines. She could have offered to help me get change from other sales people or ticket vendors. I decided not to say anything. I never had this problem with getting change. The highlight of the tour was seeing the garden and the cemetery area by the mansion. Very beautiful flowers and picturesque. I do have to take away one star for the mansion tour an other factors. My companion thought it was lacking and overpriced. My suggestion is to save your money and pay for the VIP or Commander in Chief tour. It may cost more but you are saving money by getting better quality tour service. If you love revisiting museums, get a year membership. You get a discount on the pricier tours and unlimited passes for a year for the grounds pass and mansion tours tickets. I really wanted to give this place an excellent rating, but I can not dismiss some of the flaws I experienced.

OMG how can one expect a fair or balanced review of this from me? Every moment of this trip thrilled me beyond belief. So much of the stuff was original. The mansion itself had very tall ceilings, so my beloved didn't hit his head - very uncommon for our historical treks! I 100% suggest the VIP tour, if you can manage to do that. You get a few incredible perks, and moreover you get to do the tour with sone other die hard Jackson fans. Every moment at the tomb, I felt my heart race because... wow. Just wow. The restoration and current work going into finding more information about the lives of the enslaved is also very interesting. I didn't buy a ticket for that tour this time, but if I get to come back, that sounds fascinating. *overflowing glee goes here*

We did a self-guided tour of the grounds. Interior of home was sold out. There is an app you can download, and there are several areas with numbered signs that correspond to what you are looking at and yiu can play short audio clips about each spot. They can be a little confusing due to different colored numbers that follow different guides. You can walk quite a bit here and enjoy several areas. Well worth the visit. Don't forget to check out the wine tasting room. Nice selection of wines.

They have done a great job keeping this place in shape. The grounds are well kept. The house has plexiglass up at the different rooms to keep them from getting messed up. You can walk the halls and look through the glass doorways while listening to the tour guide. There's a gift shop with lots of stuff in the store but not everything is online. We were on a time crunch by the time we got done walking the grounds and touring the house so I didn't have time to look through the shop. There's a little cafe and a winery, Natchez Hills. They have a few tables. An awesome place for sure!!

It a long hike to get to the mansion from the ticket area.. Tour ran at least 30min late. 93 degrees out. Made us sit outside in sun for about 1hr with tour guide talking. Told us mansion was air conditioned. Got inside still hot. It wasn't working right. We were over heated and never saw the rest of the grounds with would have nice to see. They need some way to take seniors and disable people at least to the mansion. They had wine tastingthat day. And never found vineyard

OK, so the tour is set up a little different, where you get a couple different tour guides, 1 in front of the house, one in the enterance and first floor, one for the second floor and another for the exit from the home. This causes the vibe to not really flow through the tour, but the experience is great. The grounds are self guided, and you should set aside time fo them as well.

Wow. Such rich history here, some of which is heartbreaking. The grounds are gorgeous and very well-kept, and the tourguides (dressed to play the part) did great at bringing the past to the present and making us feel as though we had traveled back in time. I felt as though we had been transported to another world. A very eye-opening and visceral experience, and a trip to Nashville wouldn't be complete without stopping here. You won't regret immersing yourself in such a vital part of our country's history--the horrible aspects and all.

I really enjoyed coming there today. The guides were very knowledgeable and love the history. But me and my 6 year old granddaughter were outside going to the cabins and such and the horses and wagon came by and my granddaughter asked me if we could ride. So when they got back to the main house and the driver stopped and was telling about stuff he stopped in mid sentence and asked real sarcasticly if we needed anything. I asked if it was part of the tour and he whispered something to the people on the wagon real smart allec about us. It was very UNCALLED FOR! We were just admiring the horses and it hurt my granddaughters feelings. It was all could do to drag him off of there and make him apologize. We were just standing there minding our own business and he had to be rude to us! I’ll never be back and you can bet I’ll tell others not to come to the Hermitage!! VERY UNCALLED FOR. I absolutely loved This! There is so much to learn here. This was a very well managed establishment, very clean as well. So many photo opportunities as well. I was a little disappointed that I could not take photos inside the house but I can understand why. It was so interesting to see how a wealthy, well to do person lived their life back during this time period. The house is so magnificent and no bathrooms! My kids emitted it as well. If you work up an appetite during your tour there is a great cafe next to the reality nice gift shop!

The grounds are large and there are tons of signs with historical information on them throughout the estate grounds. The tour inside the mansion is very worthwhile and the guide is very knowledgeable. Great place to visit with kids but the tour of the mansion is not good for little ones. You cannot touch certain railings, the walls, or the wood floors.

I highly recommend The Hermitage to anyone who knows little about history or loves history and knows everything! I did not remember anything from 8th grade U.S. history so this was a great way to learn. I highly recommend doing the audio tour and watching the video about Andrew Jackson. They also do personally guided tours. It is very interesting to go through the house and see how they lived back then. Those giving the house tour are dressed in old fashioned clothing and all of the volunteers and employees are extremely knowledgeable! There was not a question that they could not answer! The gardens are beautiful and very well-kept and there is plenty of land to explore. Sadly, this part of history included slaves but I believe it’s important for people to learn about all history not just the good parts.

Amazing visit! The VIP tour is a Must Do if you are a history buff! Kellie absolutely loves her job and knows her history! The VIP tour with her was one of the best I have had anywhere. Whether you like Jackson or not, its definitely a place with rich history for both the area, state, country and the family. Remember to stop down at the building by the well house for a sample of the Hermitage hot chocolate. If you like hot chocolate and love dark chocolate, it's definitely going to be your new favorite thing that you cannot find in a store.

It was nice visiting. Very lovely grounds and I appreciated that they took care in presenting Jackson in a light that gave sight to both him as a president, a husband, and a slave holder. I enjoyed the grounds tour, that allowed us to take in the outside beauty. I also liked the audio tour that was easily accessible by cell phone. The garden is probably much more beautiful in the spring. The slave quarters were presented well in my opinion, but I felt like they gave little to the horrible conditions they must have faced. I enjoyed being able to go inside the original Hermitage on my own and feel like I was stepping through time. While he remains the most hated president (in my opinion), getting insight into his life at his home was eye opening. Definitely worth a half day trip. Just do your research. There are definitely some things that are sugar-coated here.

This is a great place to take the family for a fun and educational adventure. The layout will encourage the kids to move around, and the docents will provide the educational information along with the various presentations that take place around the grounds. We went on a weekday, so the crowds were fairly small (only 2 school groups). We walked the grounds and toured the mansion, and listened to the "Duels" and the "Horse Racing" presentations. Both were really fun. We also had a quick lunch at the cafe on site.

Can't say enough about this place. Beautiful grounds. Very informative. Nice workers. Amazing piece of history. You get there and pay $20 for the basic entry and receives map. Go inside and they give you seen audio device for your tour (bring your ear buds.) The indoor area has displays, a short film and interactive exhibits. Once you go outside, there are numbers as you walk along the path (also shown on map. ) You can enter the number on your device and learn about the spot you are in. There are 2-3 numbers: the regular info, more info about Andrew Jackson's wife, and the kids version, which is very engaging. You can enter either or all to listen. There are also some reenactments around the property. You can see where Jackson is buried and where he lived. A lot of the home is exactly as it was during that time period. You can see cabins where his slaves lived. The Hermitage did a great job with providing information on the enslaved and the huge role they played in history. Would highly recommend anyone check this area out. Also, don't forget to drive to the other side where you can see the church where they worshiped and cemetery.

What an awesome place to visit. Andrew Jackson certainly had a controversial presidency but his home does not disappoint. Learn about Jackson, his wife Rachel and gain some historical perspective as well. You may have to wait a while but the mansion tour is spectacular, as are the gardens next to the mansion. The Hermitage is easily worth the visit if you find yourself in the Nashville area.

If you're ever in Nashville, enjoy museums and history you must check out Andrew Jackson's Hermitage. We went in the middle of winter and middle of the week so it wasn't very crowded. We easily spent four hours exploring the grounds. I'm so glad we visited.

What a wonderful historic site - it’s privately owned so it’s important to support the Hermitage. Gorgeous 50-acre plantation that holds the original Hermitage and the mansion also known as such that was later constructed. Take the trail on the backside of the property if you’d like to see the gorgeous forest the property is on, the old cotton field, deer and wild turkeys - gorgeous nature! Nice staff guides you around the mansion. Worth the $20/person!

If you're a nut for history & historical sites, this place is for you. It offers pure American history: the good, the bad, and the ugly. If you can't handle real facts, don't go. I actually witnessed a lady have a nervous breakdown because she couldn't comprehend there were actually slaves here. That being said... The estate is beautifully maintained. The mansion is architecturallly fascinating. The gardens are beautiful. A lot of the trees date back to the 1700s and are huge! Be sure to wear comfy shoes. We preferred the self-guided tour as to wearing earphones. I think that blocks the experience. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and ready to answer questions. Allow a minimum of 2 hours, and when you're leaving follow the signs to Tulip House...more history there as well!

Exceptional home and grounds. Unlike other places of historical note, most of the items, art, and furnishings are original. Take time to explore the grounds, including the spring, slave quarters, and gardens. The information does not sugar coat Jackson. He is shown as a slave owner who instilled fear of physical punishment in his slaves. Staff is very knowledgeable and in period clothing.

One of the most well done historical visits I have ever had was to Andrew Jackson's Hermatige Home. If you get the chance, come visit and plan to spend 2-4 hours there. The grounds are beautiful and everything in the home is original or restored. They turned it into a museum within about 20 years of his death because his son mismanaged their money and went broke in 10 years. Peaceful and nice place to visit. We just walked around and read the signs and did not do any audio tour or tour guide, but it was obvious people who did got even more out of the experience.

It is a good idea to watch the documentary before heading out on your tour of the estate. Then, pick up your audio tour device. It would be nice to have ear buds for the audio tour. The grounds are vast, so we got plenty of exercise on the paved walks and on the path through the woods. The museum does a great job honoring the memory of the enslaved people who once lived, worked and died on the Jackson estate. It was a sad and tragic existence for them. We were told the house is staged as it would have been in 1837. It is lovely. The history of the house itself is very interesting. The tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our visit to the home of our country's 7th president.

There are lots of historical boards that provide background information and pictures throughout the property. Great educational experience for the whole family. You'll get a headset for audio tour. Locations for audio tours are shown in the area map and also in the signs along the paths in the area. There's introductory video in the auditorium to start the tour. Guides are very knowledgeable. Some of them have lived in the area for decades and know the history of the place very well. We decided to spend some time in the wooden trail which was very soothing. There's a small stream of water along the wooden trail too. There's about 1400 acres of land so you won't even hear the traffic in the woods.

Well preserved grounds. However, definitely mixed feelings as you walk around the property in that Jackson had over 150 slaves. Wear comfortable shoes if you want to do the nature trail at the back of the property as its partially wooded and a gravel path. I only had 2 hours which was enough to do the mansion, garden, tomb and the majority of the grounds. Need another 1/2 hour to do the museum, but it's not a must. Lots of walking, some parts are gravel others cement pathways. Don't really recommend for children or strollers. Belle Meade Plantation is more family friendly.

With your ticket you get a self guided audio tour that works very well and makes it so that you can walk around and learn at your own pace. We took about 4 hours and were able to see everything and hear and read all of the information. The gardens and natural areas of the hermitage were gorgeous and almost worth the trip on their own. Just as a note, this tour requires A LOT of walking and you will be outdoors the majority of the time, just keep that in mind before you make the trip.

The museum has a ton items that are tied to Andrew Jackson or his family. I learned a lot about the history of Andrew Jackson. Audio tour guide was super fun. Be sure to check out gift shop to remember your trip. There is also a cutie little cafe to have lunch or afternoon tea. Be sure to see Andrew Jackson's tomb and the horses and livestock throughout the grounds.

Nice tour. Can't take pictures in the Mansion but you can take plenty outside and in all the other buildings. Entry fees are used to keep the place restored. If you take pictures inside, no one would come because they could see it for free. Believe me, it is worth the entry fee to listen to the history and see the beautiful mansion!! There was at least a 45 minute wait to tour the home. You aren’t allowed to actually walk in any of the rooms. I couldn’t understand what a few of the guides were saying. It was close to closing time when we arrived (3 when we got there and they closed at 5) and it felt like the staff was just kind of over being there that day. We went in groups of 12 and that seemed to be to many to look inside the doors all at the same time. The museum was very informative and the area was clean. The land was beautiful.

Located just east of Nashville, this historic site is a must see on you vacation plans. The Hermitage was Andrew Jackson's, the seven President, home and has been beautifully restored. The tour includes the famous mansion, slave quarter's, smokehouse, spring house, stables and gardens. Plan to do a fair amount of walking and allow plenty of time to truly enjoy all that is offered. The tour also includes an audio device, with a map of the grounds detailing audio tracks to 'key' into. There is a setting for adults and one for children and we actually enjoyed listening to both settings throughout our tour. Overall experience was really nice and educational for the whole family.

The museum shows the history of Andrew Jackson from birth to death with areas focused on his military career and presidential ambitions. Of all of the historical sites I have visited The Hermitage is at the top of the list. It is Andrew Jackson's Nashville Tennessee home and exceptionally well preserved. The Visitor Center where you begin your tour has a movie theater where you begin and an extensive collection of Jackson memorabilia and interactive displays. When you exit the Center you begin a tour of the grounds that leads you to the house. Tours thru the Hermitage begin every five minutes with groups of 12 beginning with the construction of the house. You are then taken inside for a tour thru every room. We were told 85% of the furnishings are original. More than most other President's homes.(Mount Vernon only has about 15% originals). There are several guides in the house explaining different aspects. No photography is allowed in the house. When you leave the house there are different paths leading you to different areas of the plantation. There is the cemetary where the Jackson family is buried and the Grecian styled memorial where Jackson and his wife Rachel are buried and next to them is Jackson's lifelong slave Alfred who died in 1901 and is buried where he asked to lie. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours and probably more if you wish to explore all the sites there. I highly recommend The Hermitage.

Interesting tour however it is very scripted and does not go into much detail of the lifestyle or share many stories of the family other than what you might read in Wikipedia. The guides seemed more interested in making sure you stayed on the gray carpet and didn't chew gum (even shaming tourists like teachers in a classroom and making them walk outside to throw it out while everyone waited). The most information was shared about the specially printed wallpaper that A.J. had to have reprinted. Other than that there was little said about the furnishings and 90% of the original contents that were recovered. Most of which were gifts so you would think there would be more to say about them. It felt very rushed and incomplete. Luckily, the pricing wasn't bad but I don't feel like I would care to go back. I've been to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello twice and could go a dozen more times because there is so much information shared. It seems each guide hones into a different aspect and is truly interested in sharing about it. I believe you would get the same "canned" tour at the Hermitage so no need to revisit.

I had mixed feelings about visiting Andrew Jackson's Hermitage. I am a person who has a real problem with his Indian policies and their execution, but I am/was no expert on the time period and hold the belief that historical context is crucial when making such judgements. If you are such a person the "In Their Footsteps" tour is an absolute must. The tour guides you through the Hermitage from the slave perspective and provided valuable insights, stories and history. While this wasn't about the Indian issue, it shone a bright light on the complexities of the time period and Jackson himself. I also found the information in their movie and exhibits throughout, not only fascinating, but enthusiastic about understanding Andrew Jackson as a person, a leader and a president warts and all. They pulled no punches. They acknowledged his faults and presented his successes with equal attention. I find that very, very rare for any presentation of history and the Hermitage is a must visit because of it. In the end, I still have great issue with Jackson's Indian policies (which were discussed in detail through exhibits) but I also understand that he was the first populist president who cared deeply for the common man and his voice and his presidency changed our fundamental interaction with democracy on a national level. He believed the people should choose the president. I do too. Should Jackson still be on the $20 bill? I don't know and I am more conflicted about that now than I was before my visit. I do know that Jackson is a complicated character full of greatness and contradictions and I am grateful that the Hermitage layed that out in such fine detail.

If you enjoy musuems, you can't miss the historical spot. I learned so much and enjoyed stepping back in time and exploring life in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The guides are dressed in accord and are willing to answer any questions. The entire Hermitage is kept up so well and the State of Tennessee clearly plans on keeping it that way. The garden area was very peaceful. Definitely recommend arriving earlier in the day to beat the rush. Also recommend taking your time and doing everything they have to offer. Including the wine tasting!

All of the audio, video and written dialogue encountered along our tour of The Hermitage, which encompassed Andrew Jackson's legacy,seemed primarily fixated upon shaming him for his acceptance of slavery, irrespective of it being a circumstance of his times. The shaming continues regarding his efforts to uphold his sworn duty to protect his nation's interests with regard to the savage and barbaric Indians of that era. If you look past the politically correct apology tour which dominates this site, and if you first get educated on the facts before visiting, then indeed there is much to take in and enjoy.

We were visiting family in Franklin and they suggested we go to Hermitage to take the mansion tour. The Jackson home is beautiful, and if the tour ended there, you'd leave happy knowing a bit more about the man on the twenty dollar bill. But the story is not complete without walking to the original home that was later converted to slave quarters. The museum on the premises pays homage to several of the enslaved people who provided the labor from which the Jackson family derived their wealth. The short video in the auditorium did even more to provide a fuller picture of a man rightfully lauded for his efforts on the battlefield and in the White House, but also acknowledged his flaws. If the purpose of history is to learn from other's accomplishments so we can repeat them, and to learn from their mistakes so we can avoid them, this is a good place to get a worthwhile lesson.

The most well-preserved presidential estate in America. This estate includes the Jackson family mansion and farmland. The the interior of the mansion is primarily composed of original furnishings. Tour guides give a tour of the mansion and audio headsets are provided for info on the rest of the tour. There is also a re-enactment of a colonial duel that takes place at the top of every hour on the Hermitage lawn. The caretakers of The Hermitage are very passionate and knowledgeable. Be sure to ask plenty of questions!

Fabulous home with 90% original furnishings. Great history with period docents. Flat, but significant walking. There are restrooms at the back of the property (15 minute walk from visitor center), but they were LOCKED! Other bathrooms en route to home were ALSO LOCKED. HUNDREDS of school children descended on visitor center restrooms where only 4 of 5 toilets were functional. Come on...you are collecting hand over fist money with the HUNDREDS of visitors we roamed with. OPEN YOUR GOSH DARN BATHROOMS!! Badly done.

This is a must see when visiting the Nashville area. You start by watching a video of the life of Andrew Jackson who preferred the be called general Jackson . Then you toured the museum lots of artifacts from the time . Be sure to pick a nice day to go walking the grounds . The mansion and grounds are well maintained . We walked around the entire area lots of historic cabins . It was early spring when we were there the garden hadn't started to bloom yet . Only the mansion is guided everything else is self guided the have audio guides available. Plenty of free parking .

The tour guides were great. They were knowledgeable and thorough. The mansion was great to see. The tour went fast - they didn’t leave time to really see the rooms. You have to stay on the carpet (which is fine to protect the house) and the plexiglass is in the doorways so only one person can see in a room at a time. 12 people per tour - so the guide would explain 2-4 rooms at once and then move on. If you are trying to see the room you miss the tour comments. Or to listen to the tour you only have 2 seconds to see the rooms. Otherwise it was informative. The grounds seemed to be neglected. So many weeds and dead plants in the gardens. Seems like there is very little care (if any) or attention to keeping the gardens looking good. Seems overgrown by weeds. Very frustrated that we arrived 10 minutes before our tour at 12:15. We stood in line. The attendant told us we weren’t allowed to be in line until 12:15. At first not a big deal. But then found out at 12:15 that we couldn’t go in. We were advised our ticket time is to get in line, not to actually tour. So we ended up waiting for over 30 minutes (not including the first 10 minutes). So 40 minutes for a 30 minute tour. The ticket counter could have advised us. That didn’t make any sense. Overall not a big deal, but was of putting as we could have explored elsewhere in that time. Video in the museum was very well done. Overall great experience - glad we went. But wouldn’t see a second time. Similar to Mount Vernon, just on a much smaller scale.

I didn't know a lot about Andrew Jackson prior to visiting the Hermitage, and I sort of wish that the mansion tour had gone into more detail about his political career and presidency. That said, we still enjoyed it, as well as going into the garden and seeing where he and his wife + descendants are buried.

I could spend all day walking the grounds. The garden is perfect for having talks of betrayal (South Park). I highly recommend it to anyone. Even if you’re not a fan of Andy Jack, you will still enjoy this place. The landscape is gorgeous.

I had no idea the place was so huge... you could easily spend a whole day there touring the grounds. Be advised-- there is a lot of walking, even just to get to the house from the visitor's center. You also can't take photos inside the house itself because everything is so wonderfully preserved.

I have been to several dozen presidential homes. But the Hermitage definitely ranks among the top five--right there with Mount Vernon and Monticello. It is a gem in a time capsule with original furniture, even newspapers abd wall paper. The grounds, including homes of slaves and original settler, a myriad of flowers and the grave of Jackson and his beloved Rachael and a favored former slave are amazing. The day I went an 1867.style baseball game was underway and a costumed volunteer was playing a difficult game with visitors. The horse wagon that carries visitors adds to the atmosphere. And then there is a large and spectacular museum that details Jackson's life. Do not miss it.

The place is lovely however herding us like cattle and being forced to stand in long lines unacceptable. A simple reservation time with each ticket purchase would fix this problem. Maybe they should adopt Mount Vernon's policy; that museum has to down perfect. The cost is a bit high, two seniors $38 and we had to wait in line in the sun for one hour.

Cool place! I’m a history teacher and all my teacher friends recommended the Hermitage when I said I’d be driving through Nashville. It’s a beautiful place and everything is really nice. They definitely gloss over the Indian Removal Act and make it sound like his interactions with slaves were great, but it’s the bias you’d expect. It downpoured today and we got soaking wet but it was lovely and I’m glad we spent the morning here. I’m definitely inspired to do more research about the Jacksons!

My husband and I really enjoyed this. It was really fun to learn about Andrew Jackson, and his family and life. We enjoyed going through the house he and his wife lived in. There is a $20 bill with a hole where Andrew Jackson's face goes, so you can take a really cool picture there. We didn't try the cafe, but I would definitely eat there. The gift shop was fun. My husband got a t-shirt there.

If you're into history, the VIP tour is well worth the money! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept things interesting the whole way. The length of the guided portion of the tour is perfect. It was nice to walk around and see more even after it was over. The free wine tasting is icing on the cake!

Loved the wagon ride. Very hot that day, but our guide had the gentlest demeanor with us and the horses! The house tour was good, but rushed. Very hard to get a good look at the amazing things they were telling us about because we were shuffled onto the next area. The actual museum was on the smaller side, but well done and the welcome video was definitely enjoyable. (And you've really got to visit the winery and try the naughty tea😉)

I learned a lot about Andrew Jackson and his presidency. If you are a mature adult, and love history, this is a nice place to spend a few hours. If you are a child, I am not sure if it will work for you. This will be museum hell for most children. Restaurant: The restaurant cashier refused to check on ingredients for an alergy ingredient which was disappointing, so I was limited to ordering a dry salad upon her recommendation. Oddly enough, the same song kept playing over and over. Strange no one thought to play a variety of songs as I was very tired of listening to it after the third or fourth time. I wish that they had period food, especially anything that was Andrew Jackson's favorite. I enjoyed ambling around the property. It was quiet and peaceful. The house is currently undergoing sprinkler system upgrades, so the bottom level is pretty much corrdand off (2018).

Exceeded my expectations. I brought my five-year-old and he was complaining before we arrived so I was expecting constant whining but it was interactive and tangible enough that it drew him in. He especially enjoyed the wagon ride around the property and the duel. They have very knowledgeable staff throughout the tour that were able to answer a variety of questions. Really interesting for a small child AND an adult. The one deficiency was that the entire site avoids race relations at all costs, which gives a skewed view of General Jackson's legacy. They are forced to discuss African Americans since it was a plantation but they ignore Jackson's involvement with native Americans.

A must visit when you are planning a trip to Nashville. Learn the history of The Hermitage as well as Andrew Jackson. The mansion is gorgeous and they are very strict since most of the structure is original. Make sure to visit the grounds as well as the Jackson cemetery. Afterwards, head to Natchez Hills Winery for some sweet tea wine.

I didn't know a whole lot about Andrew Jackson prior to the tour. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and dressed in period clothing.I was a bit disappointed that there really wasn't much interaction with the mansion rooms. All but the hallways and stairs were sealed off with plexiglass. the tour took about 45 minutes and most of it was the tour guide talking about the different artifacts that were displayed behind the plexiglass. I expected a bit more for the $25 per person admission fee.

This was an interesting tour, but I would have to argue that the price of admission $24 per adult hardly equaled out to the 30 minute guided tour of the mansion. The mix of guides giving the background of each room was nice and I appreciated that they dressed in the garb of the era, but beyond giving their rehearsed lines they weren't able to give much insight beyond it. All of the staff throughout the complex were incredibly friendly. The house was well preserved and with everything placed behind plexiglass for viewing I imagine it'll stay that way for decades to come. I was disappointed that NO photos were allowed whatsoever. Compared to the experience of Jefferson's Monticello and Washington's Mount Vernon, this was a bit of a let down.

Unless the repairs are made soon, I fear the home will become irreparable. Great spot to visit as far as history. We brought our dog, but be mindful, most exhibits are off limits if you have a dog with you - didn’t know that before we bought the tickets. The property is well maintained and looks great. Only issue one might run into, if you are allergic to bees, they tend to make nests near the cabins on the property. Anytime we went close, we were quickly reminded that this was their territory.
