Reviews of Weisman Art Museum
Shoumit Karnik
Great museum. Small collection. The building itself however is beautifully constructed. Staff is mostly students who are super helpful! Do check it out
Alice Jasmine Crippa
One of the best museums in the city. Wonderful exhibit at the moment. Helpful knowledgeable staff. Nice bike ride station right in front. Highly recommended.
Suzanne Durkacs
Spent a lot of time at the Weisman discussing the nature of Shoreham Yards with the Gudrun Lock, the curator of this exhibit. Learned a lot about how nature is figuring things out even when the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the Minneapolis Park Board, the city of Minneapolis can’t. The view of the Mississippi River is amazing from the Weismann’s river view room. The BJO Nordfeldt American Internationalist exhibit was worthwhile with plenty of paintings. Foundling 100 days was too. Plenty of reasonably-priced parking underground. Admission is free with a $10 voluntary suggested donation.
Elizabeth Kirwan
Sadly museum is still closed. Not sure when/if they will reopen. It is worth a stop to see, Gehry’s buildings are always so eye-catching and on a sunny day captures the sun perfectly. Building is located along river in middle of campus so plenty to do around the area. But make sure you verify nurses is open if you actually want to go in.
Luis Hidalgo
Wife and I came here and the art is so beautiful. I will admit there are some that I did not get but I love art so it was fun. It’s free so go check it out
Trypp Adams
Amazing building, only 1 floor of exhibits and a few rooms are closed so it doesn't feel huge compared to the Walker or MIA. It's free, and I felt like the main attraction is the building itself. Exhibits typically change every school semester. Very friendly and helpful staff, I found the best view of the building from the Washington Avenue Bridge. Parking underneath the building was easy and only $3. Capacity is limited due to covid but wasn't an issue when I visited.
Tom Tran
A small but nice collections. There are good history info to learn as well.
Pritha Bisarad
Really great experience. Relatively smaller than many traditional art museums but the collections are really impressive and highlights local as well as national artists. The building itself has a modernist architecture. Worth a visit while in Minneapolis.
Darpan Jain
This building looks cool, isnt it? Well, some good effort es out to bring this place together. I liked theater they have maintained some variety in exhibitions.
When i was there I witnessed a porcelain exhibition. They also have a room with a algae exhibit, it was something new and bewildering.
Pay a visit, it is free. Great work people who brought this together. Thank you.
Mark Musgrave
Really loved the Prince exhibit. Don't miss the 2nd room of the exhibit. Also an interactive display of what looks like a row of apartments within a narrowing hall. Many other great works. Definitely recommend if you've got a spare 20 minutes.
Kent Lewis
World-class Gerhy architecture and installations in a single story gallery. Free is a good price and makes it a must see visit.
Adriana Virginia De Leon Dominguez
If you're in Minneapolis and you like architecture, you should go there! It's an amazing building. And the art museum inside it's just great!
Mohammed Alshebber
It has been over two semesters so I decided it was time to finally visit this mysterious museum! I'm more than confident to say was a free and extremely enjoyable trip!
They have a very impressive collection of artistic pots, sculptures and paintings of various forms and sizes!
Also remember to visit the shop. Any one affiliated with the university gets a discount! So, make sure to check out their books and products!
Nance B.
What a great place. Went to see the Prince exhibit before it ends on the 17th. I was delightfully surprised at the pieces they have there. Walked in greeted by a lovely young man and woman at the desk and proceeded to check it out. Larger than life painting and sculpture was the first vision to behold. A tribute to Prince just off the entrance with a mural that brought the man to life again.
A pixel piece of a photo from long ago played with the senses as did the cubism and other arrays of art that enchant someone somehow. The photo gallery of Prince saddens a visitor that a visionary is no longer with us. The building itself architecturally is AMAZING.
Go if you live herE, go if your a visitor
And I was so happy to see a Georgia O'Keefe she is my FAVORITE ARTIST EVER.
Laura “Grandma Behrendt” Behrendt
This has always been a fun place to go. Very intimate. Great gift shop for unique gifts.
Carolina Nuñez Bussolini
AMAZING ART The building OF Frank Gehry is the best
Rich Giusti
Very eclectic joint, some real nice paintings and sculptures... makes you think just how rich our culture is.
Mariam Othman
fantastic museum little collection However, the structure itself is exquisitely made. Most of the staff members are incredibly helpful students. Do take a look.
Lisa Williams
Smaller than you'd expect but still a fun place to go, and it's on the UMN campus!
Aaron Jost
Bright and spacious. Limited exhibits, but nice for a free museum.
Audrey Lord
They were almost funny how they kept out us ruffians until the exact minute they opened - imagine an adult needing to go through the door, looking at us, slipping through, and carefully closing it behind them. Yeah cuz we can barely contain our base urges. The collection was interesting. They had staff (student workers?) chatting about inane things while we were going through which was a bit distracting. Biggest disappointed was the huge billboard that shimmers with any air movement - but there's no fan to do that (c'mon let us see the effect!) and there's a sign not to blow on it which I honestly didn't see until after I did just that.
Don Bullens
The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota is a must see when visiting Minneapolis. I took this photo when the light was on the front side of the building.
Wolves1fan
Went for a wedding very cool place to visit
Nic sins
Smaller than you would expect but plenty of excellent pieces of art to appreciate!
Ping Wang
I row by the museum in my single scull every day, carrying my fondest memories of what I've seen inside. But Ji Zi's Journal to the Spirit tops them all. That one long scroll "Big Universe Wide Spirits" is worth a thousand trips there.
Valerie Jardon
Not a huge place but it's free and the building is a lovely experience in itself. Definitely worth the stop.
Pam
Very comforting place
Anatoly Khalizev
Not big but you can find something interesting for yourself choosing right exposition.
Olivier Antunes
May 2021: closed because of covid.
Building has interesting architecture. You can walk all around the building
Bao Anh Dinh
Impressive building design and beautiful art collections. Whenever visiting Minnesota University, you could walk to this place via connecting bridge easily.
Christina Nilles
5 stars since this is one of the nicest University art museums and the building exterior is very unique! But if it was an independent museum I would have expected more, there is very little gallery space and it was closed for a long time.
Atlan DA
Great museum. Lots of interesting art. Totally free
Bianca Box, MSW, SWC
Great art pieces and installations. Small but powerful.
Hui Bai
Small but intimate space for modern art. Free and located on U of M campus
Joshua André
If you appreciate architecture, it's a must see if you're in Minneapolis.
Erik Tietz
A little on the small side, but it had a great variety of art styles represented.
Mary Kelly
I visited for the first time today! Easily one of the best art museums that my family and I have been to. The size of the museum makes it easily navigable, and not overwhelming, while still offering a very nice collection. I was especially impressed with the untitled "chicken farm" piece by Doug Argue and the apartment installation. There is currently an exhibit on books banned in prison, which is very interesting. The gift shop has lots of neat items, as well. I will definitely be back!
hawra alnabi
Very small and unique in its own way. Admission is free, worth a visit, won’t take more than 30 minutes.
al co
A must to see. Beautiful arts and exhibits.
Neerja Bakshi-Sharma
Great building, smaller than I expected but it's great. The roadster was beautiful to look at.
When you plan to visit, don't make the same mistake as us and plan for too much time. It gets done a lot sooner than you'd imagine. But it's great and cute especially since it's free.
The gift shop does underwhelm though!
Tracy Reese
The architecture of the building is enough of a draw. The art inside makes it a hole in one! It's small, but the featured art exhibit is always well curated and intetesting, even for an art non-snob like me! I went last week to see the Prince exhibit. Certainly no disappointment there! Again, small, but definitely worth the trip to see a few never seen before stuff!
Mary Miller
STUNNING!! A MUST SEE ESPECIALLY SUNSET REFLECTING ON THIS MARVELOUS WORK OF ART!!!
George Shiffler
Great museum! Wonderful collection and awesome building!
Linda Brown
Going to the Weisman Museum is something I always enjoy. I requested a private tour for my Meetup group of the architecture combined with a stop at the Poster Factory exhibit "I Want to Make This Perfectly Clear". The Frank Gehry designed museum is one of the most recognizable buildings in the Twin Cities. What most people don't realize is that the curves and angles on the outside are reflected on the inside, which makes the interior an important part of how the galleries are laid out and how the art is exhibited. My group had two excellent docents, who were very knowledgeable about both subjects and were able to answer my groups numerous questions. Both docents took their time and went way beyond what they were asked to do, taking us to other exhibits on display. It was a very satisfying afternoon for everyone that attended.
I should note that while admission and public tours are free, there is a reasonable charge for private tours. For anyone considering a group tour I would definitely recommend this. Requests for tours can be done online and you can specify what you would like to see.
Parking is available in the garage accessed on East River Parkway, right below the Washington Ave. Bridge. There is a charge, but it's good to know that the high event rate that is usually charged when events are going on campus are not charged at the Weisman garage.
I appreciate the quality of the exhibits and the events that are planned around them.
Gwendolyn Pietsch
Thank you Frank Gehry for such a beautiful building!
Upton King
What an amazing experience. First off, the exterior of the building is a piece of art all on its own, jutting out, as if being launched into the Mississippi. Parking was a breeze - a pay ramp connected to the museum, so don't allow the terror of parking stop you from visiting. Also, Google maps gave us perfect directions, bypassing all of UMN. The exhibits were fun, informative, breathtaking, educational and fascinating. They even had a dragster! The gift shop was a fun place to find hidden treasures and smart, thoughtful gifts. Do your imagination and mind a favor... Expand your horizons by visiting this amazing venue. A total treasure. No entrance fee, but donations accepted and appreciated.
Lizza G
Beautiful place worth it, free admission! Parking lot 3-12 dlls
Whitney Halasz
While I enjoyed the artwork a great deal, my experience was kind of killed by the staff in each gallery. Two of which were flanking the entrance to each new room, all of which were chatting loudly with each other about their weekend activities and what not. Aside from which the museum was silent. It was distracting and off-putting. Hopefully it was just a fluke and it's not a usual requirement to use headphones if you don't want to unintentionally be privy to the staffs personal lives.
Parker Wanner
Loved this museum. Totally forgot this was in Minneapolis
Jen Jenny Jennifer Jamison Johnson Jones
One of the nicest university museums I’ve ever seen. Definitely worth checking out.
Longyi Bi
Very nice museum in the university campus. Approachable size and high quality exhibits. Quiet, free, few visitors, just good for a thought-provoking or meditation spot. Sufficient onsite parking facilities. Helpful staff. A gem in Minneapolis to stop by to escape consumerism for a while.
Karen N
If you find yourself in Minneapolis for whatever reason, come here. Super cool art museum. Frank Gehry is a genius. Loved the exhibits. Staff were ultra friendly. It’s free too. Lots of thoughtful pieces and nicely curated too. Would highly recommend!
Marta R. Salvatella
Bilbao in Minnesota. In the university campus. Really good art museum
Wambo Kalambo
It was very interesting to see the pieces. The Breonna piece had me interpretting to myself. The staff or volunteers were not that present. I havent really been to an art museum for a while and would have liked them to be more hands on. Kind of felt like they were avoiding me. I must've smelled bad or something lol.
Laura B.
The architecture of this building is beautiful, parking is convenient and cheap, and the art inside has a great variety. This is one of the best art museums I have ever been to! The staff are very knowledgable and friendly. You will not be disappointed going here!
Mark Yackley
Adjacent to the Mississippi River. Architecture of building is worth the visit alone, and striking on a sunny day. If you were able to see it, the Prince exhibit was really good! However, there is so much interior space, it would be nice to see more works in place if possible. Small gift shop on site.
Zeeshan Haque
The museum has got an amazing view from the outside. There are quite a few pieces that are really breath-taking. Also do not be fooled by the statue of life-size man sitting in front of the entrance to the lodge. I avoided eye contact with him for about an hour and only when I went close did i notice that he was actually a statue!
Monica Aladi
I came for a wedding. Ceremony and reception all in the same place. The unique stainless steel architecture of the building is an art piece by itself. Definitely some beautiful and interesting collections of art throughout. Little balconies with beautiful views of the Mississippi River, Minneapolis skyline and a great place to watch the sun set!
Rebecca Seppanen
Really interesting museum. It reminds me of a gallary museum with different artists. It's free admission. But of course you have to pay for parking. Parking is connected to the building. I payed 3$ for I think an hour. You might find some meters on the street down the block.
Sarah Mathre
I remember being here in person before COVID. They have pretty nice exhibits with some new art from time to time. It’s free to students. For COVID, I saw that they have are offering a virtual walk through tour of the place through zoom, which I thought was neat.
Aditi Kulkarni
One of the best collections in the city. Excellent American pro war and anti war graphic design posters.
Emery Brush
I really liked this Museum. It was a really great way to spend 40 or so minutes on an open Saturday. There is a decent spread of art throughout the gallery, and although not a super large collection it's definitely worth it considering that entry is free.
Casey Jackson
I only went here by accident but it was the highlight of my trip to Minneapolis. There was an exhibit on neurology ranging from historic depictions of the brain to 3D renditions of synapses. As someone who worked in a molecular biology lab I found it beautiful and thought it was a great way to help people be inspired by the awesomeness of the human body.
The iconic 2-story glass fish in the entry is stunning enough to justify a visit on it own! I highly recommend a visit here.
Ashley Smith
The museum was rather small but it was free and had some pretty cool exhibits! I especially liked the exhibit with the doors! I'd say it's worth going if you have free time in Minneapolis.
Chunfen Zhou
An architectural landmark on campus. While visually appealing from the outside, I wondered how it might benefit the art displayed inside. Although there are windows installed in roof, not much natural light enters the galleries. Admittedly, lighting is adequate for the exhibitions, but it doesn't make the art look better (am I asking too much here?).
Collection, at least seen from what's on display, consists mostly of modern and contemporary work. Surprisingly, the museum also boasts a very large collection of Mimbres (an ancient Native American culture from the Southwest) pottery. I really wish that they could dedicate a gallery to permanent display of those artworks.
If you are into neither architecture nor art, you can still stroll into this place anytime it is open (as it is free). Then, take a seat in the Riverview Gallery, take in the view of the Mississippi River and the skyline of Minneapolis, and relax.
David Pittman
First, it's a gorgeous building in a beautiful location overlooking the Mississippi River. The artworks are overwhelmingly modern, which is unusual in a university art museum. When I visited both special exhibits were of 20th century posters; I liked the exhibit of World War I propaganda. They also have a very good collection of Marsden Hartley paintings.
John Goodson (JMGNole)
Fantastic museum, in the heart of the Minnesota campus. We really enjoyed our time there.
Anna Bottila
Loved visiting the Weisman Art Museum over the weekend. There is always something new to see. The best part is their curated gift shop -- I found so many great gifts for the holidays!
Hannah DuBois
This is one of my favorite art museums in Minneapolis. The exhibits are always extremely informative and serve a larger theme/purpose. As a University of Minnesota student I take advantage of their many study nights and events.
Kristie Carter
We went here on my birthday after lunch at the St. Paul Grill. We managed to score on-street parking (it was a Sunday!) so we were pretty happy. We hadn't been here before and were looking forward to seeing the collection. We had always found the building by Frank Gehry to be fascinating. We finally made it inside and have decided that we also need to see Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The Weisman Art Museum was founded in 1934 and moved into this building in 1993.Admission is free but we put some cash into a donation jar all the same. The collection isn't very large but it is interesting. It is predominantly modern art but there are collections of ancient pottery as well as very old porcelains in a room toward the back.
Soleil
Loved it. Simple, small, cute art museum. A great place to spend an hour or two on a date or alone for some ME time. I would definitely recommend this as a free place for a date or a cool place to stop and relax when visiting from out of town.
Andrew Ervin
Excellent art museum on the Minneapolis Campus of the U of M. Check out the transient hotel - touching and sad. Terrific Depression Era paintings of hard work and pain. Many other fine exhibits. A fascinating building that is an art work in itself. Helpful staff.
Walt Atyeo
This was a pleasant surprise. We had a couple hours to kill and this museum hit the spot. The museum is small, but very interesting. The brain exhibit was cool and different. It is a no risk affair, it is free.
Michelle Dobbratz
Well curated, free entrance, good collection. Great place to kill an hour if you're in the area. My experience was slightly dampened by a couple of employees that were loudly chatting in my vicinity.
Eli Curran-Moore
Great collections. Look into the underground
Nancy Smith
The Prince exhibit was great! So was the other more serious one. Great space! It is nice that you donate what you want rather than a regular set entrancefee.
Jason DeWitt
WAM is nestled in the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis. It is best accessed by Bike, unless you'd like to pay for parking. The museum is free to visit, but donations are gladly accepted. The main draw for me was the Prince from Minneapolis visit. Numerous artists used a variety of mediums to capture the essence of Prince - glass sculptures, a custom bicycle, photography, and paintings.
Brandon Jay Rockensock Sutton
The architecture is world-class, Frank Gehry's shiny space ship that crashed into the UofM's East Bank Mississippi bluff. While it's much smaller than the one in Bilbao, it is laid out to be useful and really spacious. Bathrooms are in a weird second floor hallway. Speaking of hallways, there's a hallway there that made me look like something out of a horror film. Interactive art, an exciting permanent collection, beautiful mid-day light, an honored spot on campus, and free. Really, really free. We saw an Alexis Rockman showing of some of his Great Lakes paintings that took my breath away. So did the dancer who was huddled like they had fallen from their wheel chair. I wanted to help them but I didn't know which end was supposed to be up. And my friend told me it was a live performance art installation that explored the themes of physical impairment, societal blundering and ultimately individual freedom. Their hand stuck out from beneath their strange jeans puppet costume and surprised me that it was a real dancer, not animatronic.
Zara Offner-Hernandez
Tasteful architecture without feeling cold, friendly staff, and a great collection of art in a range of styles/mediums. Don't expect to stay for hours and hours, because it is not enormous (I.e., wonderful and worth your time just not as big as something like MIA)
Riley Morrison
This is one of the most attractive museums I have ever been to. Everything - from the facade to the interior and every piece of art exhibited in there - makes your mind go from "wow!" to "what?" and back in 2 seconds. Overall I recommend it.
Lamar Jackson
The building is beautiful and the art was nice. If I were that type of person I'm sure I would have loved it. It was nice to bring the family to see new things and it's free.
Army Matt
Great place to go for modern and abstract art. The building is a work of art as well! The location on the river makes it a perfect place to enjoy a couple hours with friends or a significant other!
Sandra Walter Meyer
Very difficult to get to by car and to find parking. Went for a Prince exhibit. There were a few interesting photographs, but only two relatively small rooms with photos.
Lela Goettl
I am not an art lover so it really didn't hold my interest. Beautiful building. Friendly staff. It is free and you get to see some of the university's campus.
Jade Roesler
The website said there would be a Georgia O’Keefe and other artists exhibit. I was disappointed when that was not true. It has been changed to Antarctica and climate change exhibit. There was a lot of Prince stuff as well. It was only ok. A good way to kill 2 hours.
Joyce Fitzgerald
Always incredible curation. This museum is perfect if you want to spend half a day or just a couple of hours there. They make the most of their space.
Greg Weyandt
Of course the Gherry architecture is visible from a distance and looks like a giant icicle overlooking the Mississippi, but the quality of what's inside this smallMuseum on the University of Minnesota campus is surprisingly stunning. The Georgia O'Keefe alone is worth the visit.
tom dyvig
There are some works of art in this Museum that actually make you pause. They're spectacular. So imaginative and so well laid out and so different from room to room to room, very much worth visiting
Rebecca Nara
Everything about the space is carefully considered and welcoming. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable. The variety of work in the permanent and temporary exhibits makes for good multiple vistits.
Perry D. Nixon
There is some very cool, off the beaten path art here. I went to see the Prince exhibit and was not disappointed. Parking was much easier than I thought it would be.
Heather Peterson
It's small, but displays evocative art.
Sem (whatthesamm)
The Weisman is in the middle of the University of Minnesota campus and free for students. I like it because they often house free events for students like study night and yoga. There tends to be some cool event going on most weekends so check it out.
Ironmaged PvP
Not only are there a ton of things to look at and books to read, Misfit coffee is here on Wednesdays making that a nice finish to a tour that has a wide variety of magnificent art to look at
Anupama G
The gift shop has great interesting stuff! Do check them out!
Medz Kitikun
BIG WOW!!! Sadly, I dont have time to stop by and take a look inside this time! Outside looks amazing!!!!

Max Jablonski
Perfectly sized! Love the mini Disney concert hall design!
Boran Zhao
Small but neat collection of fine arts and crafts.

A fine museum on the inside a great artist feat on the outside.
Jackson Coburg
With a few hours free between meetings, I was able to meet my wife for a visit to the Weisman. Very stimulating, inside and out. Was an excellent afternoon.

Love the Weismann. A hidden treasure of art on the U of MN campus. Great galleries and the home of our unique statue garden fish!!
Malena Ink
Great exhibit spaces, we've been to several special events there, wonderful location, easy parking, lovely river views.
Minneapolis Photography
Temporarily closed for Covid Virus safety. Free art museum on the University of Minnesota campus. Famous architecture inside and out.
Will Matthews
Great place to take in some culture. Open to the public, lots to look at. Staff is great. Be sure to support your local artists.
Hilary Callahan
Great to have arts so prominently in the center of campus. Great to see fine pieces from the collection plus a terrific Alexis Rockman show.
tim revis
Easy to take in (single story exhibit) but impressive. donation driven and we'll worth the crazy navigation to get there!
Baigalmaa Tsolmonbaatar
It’s a great museum with free admission. We had a family photo shoot here. The pics turned out great.
Dan Renegar
Meh. Not a ton of art in here. However, the outside is worth a look. It's free so not bad to visit while visiting University of Minnesota.
Paul Schulte
A missed opportunity. We got here on Monday but they were closed so we did get to see the exterior which has an interesting design. Sadly, we did not have the time to come back to visit.
Jeff Clay
In the Twin Cities and love modern architecture? A stop at the Weisman is surely warranted. Did I mention Frank Gehry? No it was closed, but I was there for the exterior.
Benjamin Rattle
It's free, good for an afternoon visit, and has the perfect amount of culture to take in before going back out for drinks with your visitors.
Kate Block
Well curated and FREE. What's not to love! Varied exhibits- the Prince exhibit was particularly note-worthy as was the collection of propaganda posters.
JL “J A” A
